Fabregas, Vermaelen On A Quiet Monday

The media still refuse to accept that Arsenal are title contenders, something that will not be bothering Arsene or the squad one little bit. Or at least you hope that is the case since it is a great motivational tool for the manager to use when the going gets tough.

Cesc responded to Emmanuel Adebayor‘s observations about Arsenal lacking a bank balance big enough for his wages, sorry, lacking ambition:

They are both great players. But they had problems and didn’t want to continue at Arsenal, so leaving was the best thing they could do. It was best for us because we want players who are committed

Bless him. More importantly, Fabregas is keeping his feet on terra firma and trying not to get carried away:

It is just the first game in the title race, that’s all. We must keep going like this. We know we can do that if we continue to play like we did against Everton. But I must underline that it is just the first game. We won 6-1, but this is football, one day you are the best and two days later you are the worst team in the world. Let’s keep it real, this is game one and there are 37 to go so we will talk at the end to see how we have done

Therein is the rub. Football is a game of extreme emotions, supporters prone to mood swings of great magnitude following a result or performance that lives / does not live up to expectations.

To put the win into perspective, it was probably the performance of the weekend. Certainly, better than anything that the other members of the big four put together. Tottenham deserved their win over Liverpool and that immediately puts pressure on any title ambitions that Benitez and his players may have had. No doubt Liverpool fans will be comforting themselves with the thought that everyone still has to go to Tottenham this season and that defeat may not be that costly.

Yet there is no one outstanding team in the Premier League this season. United has been weakened through the sale of Ronaldo but probably strengthened by the realisation that the players now have to act as a unit, rather than looking to one person to get them out of the hole. Chelsea, meanwhile, has plenty of experience but a narrowness of play on Saturday that a stronger team might well have taken more advantage than Hull could. All of the squads have strengths and weaknesses.

The Premier League though is on hold for 48 hours, the small matter of the first leg of the Champions League qualifiers taking place tomorrow. Thomas Vermaelen is looking forward to the Celtic match:

I don’t know too much about Celtic but they have some good, physical players up front and I think it could be a similar match to Everton. I think it will be similar to Goodison Park, with a fanatical crowd and we will have to play the same as we did against Everton. We will have to be physical again and also play our own game

Perhaps someone should have a quick word with the Belgian. I would expect it to be a totally different match to Everton – the home side will be trying for one. He is right of course in that the crowd will be positively rabid, wanting to ram the comments of the English media down the Arsenal throats. Whilst Celtic are strong at home and have beaten a number of good sides at Parkhead in the Champions League over the years, their away form is abysmal despite winning in Moscow.

One day to go and the football season already feels like it is in full swing. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. 1st?

  2. 2nd?

ANR is SUCH rubbish I won’t look at it any more.

Yogi, your comments are reliably sensible and proportionate. Congratulations on a great blog.

  3. Don’t get me wrong, the new arse.com wallpaper of TV banging the ball past Timtimeney Timtimeney Timtimeney F*ckYou, is powerful.

But where’s Denilson, two foot off the ground, cheeky tongue between teeth, having just swung his leg through and Bobby-Ping-Dazzlered our season off to a flyer? Complete with scurvy looking evertonians peeing themselves quietly behind the goal?? Where I ask you…

  4. We should have some cesc t-shirts made up saying “Keep it real!” with him winking/grinning.

It’s a great motto to have as we creep up on the continually delusional and denial wracked pundits and scoop all major honours playing beautiful football and operating at a profit.

  5. We really shouldn’t dwell on this result too much. We were playing a 3 man midfield against Phil Neville. Not that we should overlook the positives. Beating last season’s 5th place team 6-1 is a big deal, but it’s going to be a long season.

  6. Lescott to blame….Of course Arsenal can pull off wonderfull football like this…but they don’t have the depth or experience….Everton were poor……blah de blah

Ade certainly has an ego bigging than his wallet, what an utter ball bag.

  7. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

I was a bit disappointed that Myles couldn’t take a little more joy in winning bloody 6-1, but you have to remember he approaches things as a writer and not a fan. Still think ANR is good value.

Anyhow, very excited by Bendtner and a new-look defence this season. And when is Jack the lad going to get a bloody game!?

  8. Alan Hansen says “there are flaws in the way Arsenal play the game”. Translation: They don’t play like the Liverpool team from 1986.

  9. Ole – everyone probably knows that dude, good that cesc is obviously aware of it, but after 3 long months without football cant we rave for a couple of days on that?

Ghoulfest – ANR is a disgrace and myles has shown himself to be a shallow little prick with his comments about the everton game. Rather than acknowledge a good performance, was more interested in farcically defending some rubbish he wrote last week about how 4-3-3 cant work for us.

Saturday showed that if you have quality players, playing quality pass and move football the rest is superfluous. That twat palmer should be a fan, not a narrow minded windbag more concerned in his own sense of credibility than the game. Try and be serious.

  10. I think we can all say how far the lads can go, the heights they can reach are unlimited and too far up to make out properly. It is very early to say we will challenge etc, but the 6-1 is a sign of things to come I hope.

I always knew they had it in them, last year i expected alot more. It looks like they are ready to fight for each other and prove their footballing worth.

    Media’s opinion..

It dont mean shit, which it proves time and time again, everyone wrote us off up untill the Everton game and everyone thought Liverpool are strong contenders. They may still will be, but how they overlooked the attacking attributes of AA, RvP, Cesc, Edu, etc etc… and the reshuffling at the back which could have just improved us maybe…

The British Media proved to be very very slow and naive just like the average fan, and in Fact the average supporter. All the doomers will no doubt wait for something else to moan at i can guarantee, at least the 6-1 will give the rest of us a little to smile about for now.

Like i said time and time before… i am very optimistic. Nice post YW!

  11. i think the media might be right as i mentioned yesterday we still need another DM AND CB.but i think it depends on how well we will cope with this amazing run.and i would like us to prove to this so called football pundits that we are capable of doing something this season.

  12. After the outstanding win at Everton anything other than a comfortable win at Parkhead will be seen as a backward step. But that leads to coplacecy. With Celtic”s great home record a score draw would be a great result and finish the job at home

  13. riley8 fuc* off

Like I just said, I can’t care any less what the media think we need. Nor should you as a fan, nor does Wenger, nor does the players.

If we need a player, Wenger is on it, stop your whinging and enjoy the football.

  14. BERGKAMP GHOULFEST. YOU MUST BE JOKING!!!who has Myles ever written for long term.

How many of his predictions have ever come true

He has a bigger ego than Egobayor.

  15. Hansen is the same, another blow-hard who would rather defend his garbage predictions than acknowledge good football. That is a meaningless statement without elaboration anyway.

We might not win the league, or any trophy this year, but we are a good side, with quality throughout a deep squad, who play brilliant football.

The people who cannot or refuse to see that will cling to silverware as the arbiter of quality, as if anything less than pots is poor football. Strange though that standard is not universal, look at the scousers last year, apparently amazing but won nothing. People paid for their perception (in theory) will defend it, even in the face of facts, so to amateur wannabe’s with a forum. Football’s joy is for the fans though and they miss out.

  16. Why would any self-respecting Arsenal supporter want to read the blog of a hack dwarf who proclaims himself not to be an Arsenal supporter and admits to supporting Chelski on his own blog? Good value for money? It is free, man. But then so is eating dog shit.

  17. Donaldinho

Every game is different, i think we will take a win in any way or form we can get it at Celtic. Its exactly the same as the Everton game for me. If we lose narrowly after a hard fought game you can’t come to the conclusion that we are complacement. Celtic are a decent team and we will do well to get the victory or a draw.

  18. We will win the league, by a country mile. Of that there is no doubt.

  19. riley8 I agree we could do with cover at DC, DM or even DR and GK. But any signings for me would be to add depth to the squad we have a strong squad and would hate to see one of our first teamers progress stopped by a signing.

Our defence looked great apart from that blip of complacency, when will pundits realise that to change/improve a team isn’t to sign players. Wenger has proven that with a straight swap in vermo for toure, and just general training instruction and a togethernes he has possibly ironed out last seasons frailties.

  20. Lets all hope that Cesc, Arshavin. RVP Vermailen have no long term injuries ALL SEASON. THEN we have a chance OR STILL TIME TO STRENGHTEN THE SQUAD.NOW OR IN JANUARY.

SONG needs a great run until the ANC.

  21. Alan Hansen sucks the root, always has done and always will. You can even see the mark on his forehead where he’s had it pressed up tight against countless glory holes over the years, that’s no scar I tell you.

He’s a bitter man but not a patch on Phil “Nimrod” Thompson, now he really doesn’t like us one little bit and makes no attempt to disguise the fact. The prick!

Infact that whole Liverpool 80′s defence resembled a Village People’s tribute band. Mark “I’ve got a lovely tash” Lawrenson kind of tops it off I’d say.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a whoopsie, some of my best friends………

  22. Where’s Jonjohn? Anyway the 6-1 drubbing of Everton, our supposed opponent in our fight for fourth, was a real statement of intent. Even more assuring was the way the boys celebrated – they did not over-celebrate – which shows they were NOT doing the unexpected.

  23. FRANK your great pessimism underwhelms me.

  24. Frank

“We will win the league, by a country mile. Of that there is no doubt.”

Ive been thinking that all pre-season mate, lets keep it quiet though and sit back and enjoy! Every year I use to say “I think we will win it”…. something always messed up. We have a good chance, and the quality is there for sure is all I will say for now.

I still think Wenger has a signing coming very soon. A long season awaits.

  25. Myles is just upset that Martin Samuels wrote that very good article on Arsene last week, which told you more about the real Arsene than all the long winded claptrap he wrote in that book of his.

Talking of Samuel his article today makes interesting reading and may have some mileage we will see…

    http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/sport/article-1206945/Martin-Samuel-Bolton-feeder-club-Chelsea-Now-thats-offensive.html

Now tomorrow lets hope we get another performance from the lads, it is a bit hostile up there and a bit early for squeaky bum time.

But Celtic at home can be a bit like Bolton with clogs on
6 – 1 Was worth the ESPN subscription on its own

  26. Paulie I noticed that Hanson was kept quiet about Arsenal on Saturday night, yes he is a man with a dislike of all things Arsenal as for Thomo he was almost foaming on Saturday will be interesting if Mers. gets stuck into him nest week.

At least Lawrenson has a sense of humour even if his jokes can be a bit obvious.

  27. ChrisGoona

I think your probably right mate, at least one more player to come in. Unfortunately it’ll be another 10 days at least and certainly not before we’ve qualified for Champs Lge.

Once we have CL money secured and once a decent player knows he’ll be playing CL football if he signs for us.

  28. dandan

Problem is they are all paid to give an opinion, even if it is wrong most the time!!

  29. Ghoulfest, “And when is Jack the lad going to get a bloody game!?”

We’re only one game in! Patience dear boy.

  30. Pauley

True true, you reckon Senderos is still leaving by the way. I have a sneaky suspicion that he could actually stay with us. I doubt he wants to, but in Wenger’s latest comments on signings he mentioned he has added Vermaelen and Senderos while Toure has gone.

  31. As an Arsenal fan, I did a horrible thing last night. While watching MOTD, I cheered at a Sp*rs goal. I know, I apologise, but seeing Liverpool lose gives me far greater joy

  32. Hi to you all – I know you probably dont want to talk about ANR but thought it was kind of interesting in his piece today he says ‘we later realised Rafa was never going to sell Xabi to Arsenal’
Correct me if Im wrong but was he not the guy suggesting that Arsene did not buy him because of £200,000 –
Oh well the truth outs at last

  33. Jack the lad is 17, when Wenger feels its the right time to throw him in is up to him. I think most important thing right now is to hit the ground running, we will probably see a very similar lineup or identical at Celtic. We need some momentum, build some form, build some confidence. Then we will see more of Ramsey, Jack, Vela… etc.

  34. man i think monday is most depressing day of the week while i was reading this post i wasnt that interested on reading it but what can you do do.BTW tomorrow will be an interesting game againts celtic and i have high hopes on that game i think we win by a goal or 2 to kill celtic chances of advancing in the championsleague AND i would to see eduardo on the score sheet yet again and arsharvin we all what his capable of.and looking at our squad i think ramsey should be loaned out for a season cause thats the only he will improve his skills.

  35. TO BE A MAN.

On a different note, I wonder if anyone noticed during the match that cesc seemed to have GROWN a bit, I mean physically. He certainly seemed lankier than before and the way he stormed through for the 5th goal seemed more in the realm of the gerrard or lampard type midfielder.

It is facet of our skipper I have seen for the FIRST TIME. If he has developed that to go along with his natural game of exquisite passing, then goodness we have some player on our hands. He looks LEANER than I have ever seen him before and he seems to have acquired some pace as well!!!

Then there is his comments that Yogi has highlighted. I have to say it was a joy to read them, notice the subtle CHANGE in the tone of his talk, the youthful exuberance in his statements of the past seems to have disappeared. Overall it significantly evident that he has MATURED.

This indeed bodes well for our team because after the match there was none of the gallas led deluded emirates cup celebrations of a few seasons ago. The team seems to have a more MELLOW FOCUS of the task ahead of them and seems aware of the importance of not getting carried away which is very encouraging indeed.

By the way who is that on the top of the blog next to the nasri photo, fabregas or vela??

    Cheers all!!

  36. Vela, sheffield united game by the look of it.

  37. Arsenal vs Pompey just went on General Sale.

    Encouraging ticket availability

  38. Cesc has grown a bit, its part of the new bulking up strategy devised by Pat Rice to turn the team into men instead of boys. Cesc has been spending an hour a day standing with his feet planted in a giant grow bag from homebase. Chrisgoona I know what your thinking and the answers yes, there are some left, but you better hurry

  39. Scamp

I know your guilt my friend, I too cheered their winner and I too felt dirty soon after. But hey, anyone taking points of the Scousers is worth a cheer, especially if that team wont be competeing come May.

    ChrisGoona

Not sure what’s going on with Senderos, on the one hand it’s probably best for him if he leaves yet on the other hand I’d rather have him stay than Silvestre. If he’s cheap enough to keep then why not I suppose, although that would almost certainly mean we wont by another defender. Hmm.

  40. The media and “pundits” are so short-sighted and lazy it is laughable.
They go on about how we have’nt strengthened and ignore the fact that we didn’t have Arshavin, Eduardo and TV at this point last season and make no allowances for that fact that our youngsters may have improved.
I look forward to some of these ignorant, sheep-like half-wits eating their words.

  41. Vela.

Ramsey fitted in immediately when he came on and will play a large part in our season.

  42. Since the end of last season I have been left in no doubt that will win the league by a country mile. We are the best team in the league and we have the depth of squad to deal with absences.

We will win the league, by a country mile.

    …Arsenal….

  43. chrisgoona

you should have mind your business cause i wasnt refering to you.i think you as fan think you know everthing and i would like to suggest to you stay off my business

    els
i think wenger is working day in day out to find out the solution to our problem even though we had a good game againts everton but it depends on who is targeting for sure

  44. Cracking result, sure Everton were poor, but they were never allowed to be anything else.

As a Scottish Arsenal fan, I’m looking forward to tomorrow and to hopefully see my beloved gooners rip Celtic apart, but we do need to be careful…

Oh and can we just put to bed once and for all – Myles Palmer is NOT an Arsenal fan! He is just a tired old journalist who is attempting to remain relevant by posting blogs that are “shocking” and “controversial”. It’s not a coincidence that he is very pro Dein. Sorry Myles, but no one cares about your opinion, or at least they shouldn’t.

  45. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

I completely forgot: ARSHY can play Champions League this year!!! Can’t wait to watch him tear up the Hoops.

Back to the (controversial) topic of ANR, I just figure it’s good to get a more sober (but well written, unlike Le Grove) perspective to compare to that of the (excellent) Yogi’s Warrior and Arseblogger. But enough of that, on to Parkhead!

  46. We don’t have a problem, riley8.

  47. Sober? You have to be fucking joking.

  48. No frank, he’s not kidding. Get him!!!!!!!!!!

  49. 29th August. That is the day when the hacks will prick up their ears at the sound of Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal….ARSENAL

  50. Well written? He writes in tiny staccato paragraphs of about 9 words each. It is like a bunch of fortune cookies written by the guy who just lost it all at the track in a bender drowning the sorrow of his wife leaving. It is pathetic. As for sober, that is a farce. He trumpets shit he made up as fact.

Untold Arsenal have a good piece on shallow journalists – “putting themselves ahead of the story”.

The story of the weekend was not difficulties with the 4-3-3.
It was not our forwards struggling to get the ball – that is just a lie or someone forgot their glasses.

However, in the word of that numpty, what happened was related to what he wrote last week. It must be, of course, egoistic twerp.

Without over-blowing the significance of one game, any fair appraisal of saturday’s match would have to say we played well and looked well prepared going into the new season. Palmer slagged off the formation again, to defend his guff from last week, that is self-serving and far from sober.

  51. Frank – it is nice to look forward to a game like that and see it as an opportunity to lay a marker down, there need be no fear with this team.

  52. I think the decision to make whole game replays available through arsetv online is brilliant. The standard of highlights went seriously down hill last season.

  53. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

@ arseneholis, agreed that Myles ignored an obviously efficient 4-3-3 on Saturday.

I’m sure we’ll have some injuries when Nasri’s back in contention, but with a fully fit squad, where does he fit into our new look, very dangerous formation?

  54. I really like the way Cesc is maturing as captain, a quiet, unflinching authority.

  55. Marc, definitely, did you see in the second half when Bendtner didnt chase that ball down so cesc ran over to him and gave him a quick, sharp backhand accross the face, it was so quick you might of missed it. After that Bendtner chased everything.

  56. Ghoulfest – judging form the end of last season, Nasri will play as one of the central 3.

The need for a holding player also looks diminished with 3 in midfield. Instead of asking one guy to do all the defensive work, we can have solidity without hindering the attacking potential of cesc, nasri, and ramsey.

I have been slow to be convinced by Song, but his quality on the ball on saturday was a marvel. It diminishes what he brings to the side to call him just a defensive midfielder, or holding guy.

  57. riley8

When you comment you should expect someone to have an opinion, after all this is a public commenting section isn’t it. If your that scared of peoples reactions shut up is my advice to you.

  58. Cesc just gets better how can that be. Just hope we can keep hold of the fella past this season.

Bergkamp nasri looks like a shoe in for song’s position next to denilson. Not that song didn’t do a cracking job, but Nasri has all that in his ‘locker room’ don’t forget he can put himself about abit.

  59. chris stop bullying people because your small

  60. arsenehollis

Song is very good on the ball, people see him as only strong and a decent option physically. If you really watch him closely you can see he is an intelligent player, he seems to have a good ability to get out of tight spots for such a bulky lad and also pick out a decent pass. He is looking a real class act, so is Denilson, so is Bendtner. 3 players who were harshly subject to abuse by their own fans in the past.

Looks like the work and patience from le boss is paying off. We have alot of quality players it seems :)

  61. arseneholis,

Myles Palmer is a parasite. In the end, this season, and every season will be decided by how the players do on the field. Just for Palmer I hope we win something this season. I hope someone will then press his face into a bowl of poo.

  62. I like Stewart Robson, seemed to really enjoy saying how poor neville was in possession, then how cesc skinned him to get into the box for the fourth.

  63. Ole Gunner – Hopefully it’s a big bowl.

  64. els

I think Song is more likely to keep his place than Denilson if Nasri starts banging on the door for one of them spots.

    Denilson – – - – - – - – Cesc
    - – - – - – - – Song – - – - – -

We could see Denilson dropping as the deeper CM at some point or Nasri deployed wider in the Arshavin or Bentdner positions as seen against Everton. Diaby is another contender for them 2 CM positions which Den and Cesc now occupy.

Injuries and time will tell though, whats good is that this formation is more suited to the players we got, and it is very flexible.

  65. Ole – wasn’t surprised when frank said that he had previously admitted to being a chav fan.

Chris – in the first half song played a first time pass to feet kanu style, letting it roll through his legs and back-heeling it. Last season he put arshavin through with a back-heel, eboue to i think. The guy has touch, vision, and can pass.

  66. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Nasri for Song? That’s hardly like-for-like, is it? If anyone, I think Ramsey can do that job, as he seems to enjoy sitting deep, while Nasri is better at charging forward.

I think we need Song in there, though, to hassle people. I like that it’s almost impossible to shrug him off the ball. So with him there, and Fabregas, there’s one spot left unless you play Nasri higher up (which I don’t think suits him).

  67. Excellent result Saturday – stuffed 6 not just in the Everton net but down the throat of all the bloody bloggers and media hacks who fail to see the transformation and growth of this team since late last year.
Just imagine the average age of our mid-field was 21 years…just fukin imagine that. Wenger said something along the lines that a young player can improve 25%-40% in one year. Happening right in front our eyes with Denilson and Song. In contrast, the midfielders from the rest of the Big 3 should be in the museum as Neanderthals – mostly in their late 20s and early 30s (Gerrard, Lampard, Giggs, Scholes et al).
Of course the doomers and gloomers are still holding on to their old discreditted views of the big, marauding plonker as a defensive midfielder or a ugly, tall hoofer for central defender, failing to see the fruits of Arsene’s labour blooming in our sight.
Trust me these same wankers, who can’t trust stats, will soon be demading that we win 3- and 4-0 every week. ACLFers just hold it down and don’t let them put too much pressure on the boys.

  68. Watching the game again at the moment.

We really defended well from the front back, pressuring the ball – it is great to see as a fan, with the boys fighting for everything.

In the 48th and 49th minutes our strikers showed what this formation gives us. First rvp dropped deep to get the ball, then run at the defence before releasing arshavin on the left. Then 30 seconds later arshavin gets the ball centrally and plays in rvp wide left. The everton defence had no idea who to follow, where to press the ball, or how to get close to us at all.

  69. sexy free flowing football! Joy to watch!

  70. Frank at 12:27 – I will lay down my maker as well – we will win the League on a canter.

The quality in this team is unbelievable. The continued growth of our teenagers and 20 yr olds is remarkable. The experience from 08-09 is irreplaceable. Barring major injuries to our entire backline as happened late last year, this is our year.
    One step at a time.

  71. Lets not talk about that bugger whom citeh purchased from us..and am not talking abt toure…the more you talk abt him or check his articles or boo him the more importance u give him..just ignore him..dont even boo him..he isnt worth booing…

  72. fabregas..didnt look very happy yesterday..he was subdued in his expression..though while playing he was exactly opposite..the way he took the goal..i was pleasantly surprised..rvp was begging him to pass but he just turned it in…probably his best goal for arsenal..

  73. i will be very surprised if wenger doesnt buy defender this season..not for this season but atleast for season after that…senderos..gallas and silvestre will all finish there contract..none of them is likely to be renewed..he has to buy 1 defender..

  74. we have too many options in attack…if we play 3 upfront..bendy..arshavin..rvp..eduardo..vela and theo..if we buy chamakh ..i wont know what to do with theo..i think even nasri can play in 3 upfront..

  75. For me Song was MOTM Saturday and will become a fixture in that position.

Diaby also is going to make a Mark this year, in my view Wenger, rather than having s depth of squad problem, is barring injuries and suspension more likely to struggle to keep them all happy with enough games.

Prepare for some exits next summer possibly including Fab. to make room for those coming through.

Of course Myles will blame our finances rather than Wenger weeding out his options.

  76. Is the formation for Europe though? Wenger has a habit of mixing things up, with some players not understanding their role. Look forward to Arsenal smashing the scum.

  77. I thought that Cesc and the others looked very determined from the outset, adc. Cesc is of course grieving for his friend.

  78. I thought that Song was excellent too, dandan. Impossible to pick a player from that performance they were all excellent, individually and together. No surprise that Everton fell apart. They got trounced.

  79. dandan@1:46

I’d like to see Diaby make the step up this season or at least stay fit for 3 weeks in a row. Unfortunately the only mark I can honestly see him making is down the back of some poor bastards legs.

I think he’s a bit of an oaf if I’m honest and that’s not just down to his lerching manner. He does show glimpses of quality but never enough and never 2 games in a row. You could make a blinding 5 minute video on Youtube with those brief highlights though I’m sure.

  80. ArsenalStation

I agree. Song was absolutely fantastic throughout the match. On one hand, it’s very encouraging because if he keeps up performances like those the DM spot could not be taken from him. But, on the other hand, it makes me worry for January-February when he leaves and we are likely to either move Denilson back to his spot or bring on Diaby.

  81. Great performance- lets just enjoy it- Celtic is another game. They will be fired up and driven on right to the end and in the second leg. We will have to win a war to win.
Hansen is Liverpool to the core and not sufficiently open minded or neutral for his views to be taken seriously. As for Myles- seems to have spent far too much time crawling around celebrities- seems to think that he is one. If he tells us how well connected he is and wonderful he is perhaps he thinks we will believe him- but we don’t.

  82. ArsenalStation

Denilson is more than capable of filling in, by then Nasri should be back. Also Diaby is another option, but lets not count all our eggs yet – Transfer window is still open, and it will be in January also.

  83. I still see people here cramming Saturday’s performance into the old frames.

Denilson was doing a defensive job on Saturday. His job was to cover Clichy on the flank and relieve Arshavin of that responsibility. Bendtner had to do the same on the right, and did it so well he’s set a standard for Walcott, Eboue or anybody who might be stationed on the right side of defence. Fantastic work rate and tracking from the big Dane.

For the first few minutes of the game Cesc was actually sitting very deep, and dictating the play almost from an Alonso role.

As the game turned Song was sitting deeper.

One devastating thing about playing RVP in the middle and Bendtner on the right. This is something Myles Palmer in particular did not get: RVP drops deep and goes wide and drags the centre back with him, this frees up space for Bendtner to drive in, and for midfield runners.

It won’t always work, but it worked a charm on Saturday.

  84. Someone mentioned this earlier but Untold Arsenal’s How journalists cover their past criticism of Arsenal is obligatory reading. See http://blog.emiratesstadium.info.
A lot of self-serving journalists who spout drivel as way of covering their ass will have to find ways of sneaking onto the Arsenal bandwaggon before the season is out.

  85. I agree with OG

  86. We defended very, very well on saturday, even when the game was already well won.

We did that by chasing all over the pitch, forcing errors form the less technical opposition, and working as a team.

If we continue to do that the talk of a flamini type player who covers the rest of the side will be obsolete.

We could easily play nasri, diaby, cesc in central midfield and be fine defensively if everyone works hard. Manure, bunch of wankers that they are, dominated last season without an athletic holding player. With good team defense they got away carrying giggs and scholes in a 3 man midfield.

  87. Judging from the comments I’ve read the past two days, I think everyone can agree that:

    “We f****** came on!!!!”

  88. Hansen is a pratt, I hate having to endure his rubibish on MOTD every week. I actually think the scar on his head is the result of a lobotomy.

Anyway, Hansen aside, what a cracking weekend, Song was my MOTM, so composed in the middle, he allowed Cesc, den etc to push on and express themselves. More of the same tomorrow please.

  89. Malaysiangunner

YW nicely balanced and grounded piece.

You need to be but not me. WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE LEAGUE !!!!

With one more addition in the CB position in case of Song leaving for the ACN and we get hit by a spate of injuries in the CB position. Otherwise we have the team tio beat this season. The boys have become men. There is fight, discipline and team spirit not seen much for the last 2 seasons.
So AW knows who to get rid of afterall. I stand corrected.

I had sent Pyles one of my scathing e mail asking him to cease and decease writing anything about the Arsenal if he cannot be objective. He will of course not pay heed.

Enough about those so called ` journalist’ and `pundits’ and ex players.

This week is a week to celebrate. I had predicted that we will win and win comfortably but not in the manner that we have seen. It seems to me that once Cesc plays well the whole team plays exponentially better. This season I agree with most of you that he has deadly quiet determined mature aura about him.

He will lead us onto winners podiums come end of the campaign.

NO FEAR! WE ARE THE ARSENAL!!!

  90. You have to laugh, in the aftermath of the game, the haters have been out in force. Collymore rolls out the same out bilge, that in 3 or 4 months time, we will falter on a cold wet night up north – even though in recent seasons there is no reason to suggest that. We only lost once up north last year (Man City – 3-0 – with 9 1st team players missing !!!)

Alan Green had this to say:

” I’m getting on a bit but I still vividly remember, some light years ago, Sheffield Wednesday winning their first fixture in the old 1st division by a margin that allowed the local paper to print a league table showing the Owls at the top that Saturday evening. Some portent that was: Wednesday were relegated.”

What a fucking tosser !! We are going to get relegated ?!

The BBC at lunchtime didn’t even mention us in their report of the first matches in the premiership.

    Phil Thompson – The Big 3 ??!!

The Laurel and Hardy show on MOTD.

And the comedy piece from Pyles.

Adding to all that is persistent lazy hacks like Andy Dunn, not even acknowledging the manner of the Everton victory, where we gave them an absolute mauling in the physical stakes – by saying that we are “too weak physically”.

And the comedy duo of Rednapp and Hoodle, saying that Spu*s now have “strength in depth” because the likes of Crouch were on the bench.

Fucking tossers – the lot of them.

  91. Finsburyparker

Hey MG, don’t forget the team!

“It seems to me that once Cesc plays well the whole team plays exponentially better.”

The same could be said about many players in the squad,

but that is why they call Cesc ‘The Metronome’.

Honesty speaking, rarely can I remember having seen a single player dictate the flow of a game…but then I only manage about 4/5 games a season at the Grove, and the thrashing of Blackburn at home a few seasons ago stands out as the most amazing performance I’ve seen. However, I am a little biased.

Though I wish I had seen Zidane play.

  92. MG

Allow me to correct the expression: It is “cease and desist” and not “cease and decease”. Unless it is intentional, and you really wish death upon Mr Palmer, like many of us do.

  93. Nasir Jones-Nasri

You just knew James was gonna be back Monday, the nasty little cretin.

Now kick rocks back to your little cavern, you lowlife.

  94. @ Chris & els…

I’ve watched the entire match about 4 times since Saturday.

Every Everton pass through the midfield had one of ours trying to arrive at the same time as the ball. Arrive and intercept even more than closing down.

Vermaelen and Gallas have clearly been encouraged to ATTACK the cut-off lanes moving FORWARD not dropping back like last year

Cesc has been released to move through the midfield as he wishes while Song and Denilson buzz all over the midfield. Our play has become even MORE fluid as players were interchanging positions constantly.

Our movement in the final third was excellent. So many interchanging passing-triangles without Ade needing to hold up play.

Everton had absolutely no way to determine the point of attack. Rather than the big-man front line, which works like a spear through the defense, Everton looked like they were being attacked by a swarm of bees. We had 4, and at times even 6(!) attackers in the box area.

The change in formation is just the beginning. I think the structure of the team has changed significantly. We never attacked the ball last year like we did Saturday. So much movement OFF the ball. Bendtner was everywhere.

Most importantly…Cesc was the undisputed general of the team and everyone looked confident and calm following him in…every missed shift through the midfield…Song put his hand up to Cesc in appology. Even RvP was checking in with Cesc for positioning.

I think we should be expecting very different things from this squad this year…other than that one (dubious) offside on Pieenar…we played the game with the ball in front of us. Very interesting.

  95. Exciting times.

  96. Opps my bad it’s only for a month……..may get my wish after all.

  97. I’ve read in a bunch of different places that we all shouldn’t put too much stock in the first result. And normally we all wouldn’t, except that we’re tooting the horn extra loudly after this weekend because we all know how much the likes of Pedro and Geoff would be saying how right they’ve been all offseason about Wenger and his band of youngsters. I know this is early in the season, but this result is a big middle finger to the excessive naysayers. Every supporter can have questions or concerns about his/her squad, but to be so caustic and virulent and so damning in the criticism of the club one purportedly backs is simply not possible from a true supporter. Again, for those who crossed the line this offseason with their attacks on the manager and the squad, this side proved one thing – the potential is there. If that’s not enough for you, then I suggest you cease taking up space at the Emirates and give up your seat to someone that loves this club and wants to will it to victory every time out.

For everyone else, strap yourselves in as this club is electric. Hope everyone enjoyed it as immensely as the Chicago pub supporters did this weekend.

  98. Nice one arsechicago

  99. Malaysiangunner

    Luke

You are right , it must be a Freudian slip. But I donot consciously wish death on even Pyles, just annonyminity, which in his case will be a fate worse than death. We all should just stop reading his site completely.

No Fear ! We Are The Arsenal!!!

  100. By the way…if you want to read a journo who is no afraid to say what the real deal is read Rory Smith at the Telegraph…

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/6039014/Arsenal-put-six-past-Everton-at-Goodison-Park-to-give-Arsene-Wenger-answer-to-his-critics.html

  101. Can’t remember where I saw it but it read like…

“The Arsenal ‘work in progress’ can now officially be called a work ‘nearing completion’…”

    Love it!

  102. ArseChicago

My sentiments exactly, but you put it much better than I could “…but this result is a big middle finger to the excessive naysayers”

  103. I read your link Santino. The guy gets stellar marks for effort. He made one very good point about Skrtel & Carragher. I looked at the average touch positions of each player and it was superimposed. They were playing on the same patch of turf. Signals poor defensive organisation and raises the question of whether they can play together.

However, the guy was trying to cram every action into the “Liverpool miss Alonso” frame. Ok, so Kuyt gets the ball in midfield and was slow to think. Fine. But even with Alonso playing, Kuyt or Torres will still get into positions, and if they don’t have the vision, they dont have the vision. It has nothing to do with Alonso.

  104. What’s going on with Senderos? He’s still training with the squad, and might even make the cut for Celtic. Has he been sold to Everton or what?

  105. With Toure gone I need someone to replace him on my home shirt any ideas??

  106. Vela is reserved for my away top.

  107. Vermaelen?

  108. Malaysiangunner

    Maria

    TV 5 the obvious choice

  109. He was sold to Everton 2 weeks back as reports suggested. Perhaps they sold him back to us, as he’s still with us. This could go on till the end of the transfer window, the club in the end takes him. A bit like, passing the pillow.

  110. You think?

Was thinking of getting Song, Gallas or Denilson just to stick it to the D&Gs.

But I do like our tough new boy.

  111. Maria, Eduardo in my opinion. The guy is pure class, seems to have a real head on his shoulders, and looks like quite a nice guy. He’s come back from injury with aplomb and everyone seems to like him. Or you could go with Eboue just to suss out the doomers you see. Would provide you with no lack of opportunities to tell who is a real supporter and who is just a “fan.”

  112. lol…….I was thinking along those lines anyway Gris Gris.

  113. I however am no fan of Eboue more a supporter. He won’t make it on my back any time soon.

  114. I’m surprised that no one has mentioned how similar Cesc’s second goal was to the one at the San Siro two years ago. Though with that one he had to go around someone. But lashing it into the bottom left in full flight is something he does.

  115. 3 goals for Cesc the whole of last season and he has 2 under his belt after 1 game.

  116. nolagunner name change?

1 other example isn’t an illustration that it is what Cesc ‘does’.

  117. Maria, Denilson is a great choice. Modest and always hardworking. Whatever he does he will never get the credit he deserves. I cannot believe the stick he gets even after his performance at Everton.
A great replacement for Toure, don’t you think?

  118. Something interesting from David Moyes about Arsenal’s toughness:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/arsenal/article6798461.ece

Moyes played for the Glasgow side but was reluctant to offer advice for Tony Mowbray, the Celtic manager. However, Moyes did testify to Arsenal’s toughness.

“I don’t manage Celtic, ask Tony those questions,” was his gruff response when asked about the tie. But Moyes did suggest that there are signs of Arsenal developing a more physical edge, even going as far as arguing that they had “bullied” his side.

“For me the disappointing thing was that I thought Arsenal bullied us and pushed us around,” Moyes said. “They won more contests and nudged us off the ball. You wouldn’t have known Arsenal for that. You’d probably say that was Everton.”

  119. One example is in fact an illustration, though it is not proof. I didn’t realize it was being contested, however, nor that I had to satisfy a hectoring schoolmarm, so I provided no others.

  120. Axis, “I’ve watched the entire match about 4 times since Saturday.” I won’t feel so bad about watching it back again tonight now you’ve said that. Good man.

& “Everton looked like they were being attacked by a swarm of bees.” Get used to that matey, we will hunt in packs and score for fun this season.

Muppet, on the media. All great examples of dim blinkered c*nts. Esp. Alan Green. Prize prehistoric turnip. Anything as forward-thinking as AFC will always stick up the noses of fetid dinosaurs like that. Angry backward w*nker.

    And ArseChicago, well said 3.46

  121. And yes Denilson is growing on me nolager, due mainly to the trolls inability to recognise what a wonderful young player he is.

  122. Cesc is De Man

  123. nolagunner….abit b*tchy I see.

  124. Cesc, Jack, Arshavin i am afraid are off my list……I maybe appear as merely a ‘le grove’ fan not a ACLF supporter.looool

  125. And Ade needs to put his size 20 boots in his mouth and play for Oil City.

  126. What has he said now??

Actucally i think i am enjoying my time away from him.

No more ‘the most important ting is to enjoy urselfs on the pitch’.

Have been impressed with TV comments so far.

  127. Felliani really does look like Screech for saved by the bell.

  128. Maria, that is a gem of an observation about Felliani. I’ve been trying to place that look for months and you’ve nailed it!!!

  129. California Gooner

Maria, I always think of SideShow Bob from the Simpsons when I see Fellani.

  130. @ CG,

Not sure about that SlideShow Bob reminds me more of our very own Alex Song…..!!!

  131. I can’t believe FSC will be airing all the Champions League games…now I like them so much..

F*ck off ESPN for airing only Man-ure games last season.

  132. Gris Gris,

Can’t take credit for that one. I think I read the comparison somewhere but watching the game back now the resemblance is uncanny.

  133. Has anyone any idea if you can watch Arsenal games in South Africa??

  134. Alex Song is the other “De Man”

Did you see how every time TV was pulled to the left he would cover in the middle?

He will be the perfect D Midfielder. He knows the duties of a CB and where to be and his distribution of the ball is fantastic when he wins it back in Midfield.

  135. Axis@3:49
    Good article in the Telegraph.

Makes me laugh to read the ex Manc, Barca and general wanker Hughes trying pull the La Porta shite with regards to Jolean (The Clingon) Lescott.

    – City manager Mark Hughes has kept up the pressure, saying: “We still feel there is a little bit to go in terms of maybe what we can present to Everton to change their minds.” –

What an arsehole! Can’t wait to see the fucker sacked come Christmas, if not before.

  136. G4E, you are spot on. Take a look at Song’s guardian chalkboard from the match. His positioning was great, lots of successful tackles, good distribution.

  137. California Gooner

Maria, I never saw the Alex Song/Sideshow Bob connection. Now that you pointed it out, I think you’re right!

  138. ‘The Chingon’…….LMAO!!!

  139. My only fear is that we will miss him at the ACN Gris Gris, but we can cope with it.

I hope fans can learn from Song’s experience and not rush to judgment.

  140. Shit, sorry I meant Klingon!

  141. So selling Theo isn’t a good idea i suppose.

    Oh well.

  142. Leave Jolean alone, he had a very, very bad car accident when he was a little lad. Only just survived.

  143. Has anyone any idea if you can watch Arsenal games in South Africa??

In SA all games are shown on SuperSport channels, mostly on SuperSport3. I think you need to subscribe for DSTV for that. supersport.co.za

  144. Thanks BS.

  145. I should say Jolion

  146. Nope…Joleon

  147. Perhaps his mum was into Galsworthy…..naah, can’t be…that would be Jolyon.

  148. Joleon is how Julian is pronounced in Birmingham. When he was registered his mum meant Julian but the registrar took it as Joleon. He/she said ‘is that J-O-L-E-O-N?’….’exactloi’ said his mum, not wanting to show that she did not in fact know how to spell Julian. That’ll be it…

  149. Les Scott was in fact his father’s name. When the registrar said ‘surname?’, Joleon’s mum said ‘what?’, and the registrar wishing only to help said ‘you know, er, father’s name?’, and his mum said ‘Its Les…he’s the father….Les Scott’….’Aaah, Joleon Lescott’ said the Registrar ‘I suspect that might be unique, you know.

  150. OK OK……no Lescott/Ribery jokes.

The others are fair game though.

  151. Ah now Frank Ribery, there’s an interesting name…..

  152. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  153. Ok, OK…it is in fact Franck…thanks for pointing that out, Maria

  154. Ribery,

His grandfather was Chinese who immigrated to France. Everytime he tried to say Le Berry it came out as Ribery. The name stuck.

  155. what’s this I hear about Fabregas, Sagna, AND Denilson injury worries for tomorrow’s game?

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=668381&cc=5901

  156. Oh probably right, OG. I heard that his great great great grandfather Julian was put in the stocks in Birmingham for constantly light-heartedly taking the piss out of people. ‘Only joking’ was his catchphrase. He was henceforth known as Julian Ribery, slightly sarcastically. The whole family moved to France after that…but the name stuck.

  157. ‘minor doubts’ usually means they will play.

  158. Let’s hope so lagooner.

  159. AW was in fact referring to one of the old cars in his collection. He has a collection of very well looked after motor cars all manufactured by Morris. He likes to travel to UK games in one of them, helps him to keep it simple, relax, that sort of thing. Anyway the one he chose, a green Morris Minor, he has some doubts about it. 800 miles and all. Might travel with the lads instead for this one.

  160. Frank is on a roll…

  161. Tevez anyone?

  162. Which reminds me, when Cesc said we should ‘keep it real’, I assumed that half the press would have jumped on that as a sign that half the squad were about to go to Real Madrid. But no. So well done the British press and media, you can do it if you try, you silly billies….and that was in no way meant as a derogatory comment about WG. Not at all.

  163. Can we get a history of Steven Pienaar?

  164. could not understand the supposed knocks either as all three finished the game. you would think that they would have been subbed if they were in difficulty.

  165. oh wait, my bad, Fab4 was subbed.

  166. Now there was a performance to shove up the media’s hoop. Poor Toffee performance or not. We didn’t let up. We kept on thumping long after they were dead. A hard lesson we learned from last season, I hope.

  167. Oh, and thanks for putting me back on your Link list Yogi!

  168. Frank,

Franckly speaking, you’re probably right about Franck.

  169. An injury to Denilson won’t matter, since he’s everyone’s favourite to be dumped out of the team as soon as another player returns to fitness

  170. I think there are only two approaches to deal with ANR.

    1) Everybody resist the temptation to see what drivel he posts on his site and hopefully the lack of interest will encourage him to give up or at least slow down.

    2) Absolutely drown him with e-mails explaining in no uncertain terms that he’s an affront to all Arsenal fans.

Which would be the best way to go. I’m leaning towards the former.

  171. lagooner,

You are right about the former route being the more sustainable and effective in the long term. He seems to generate quite some advertising revenue from the site thanks to the hits and the first approach would undoubtedly hit him in the pocket.

Have myself taken the second route up until now. Must have written that t*unt about 200 emails over the last three odd years. A lot of gooners seem to have done the same but I guess the first route may be more effective.

  172. I think the team will look something like:

    Arshavin RVP Bendtner

    Diaby Song Fabregas

    Clichy Vermaelen Gallas Sagna

    Almunia

  173. lagooner, simple, really. someone out there can do a script that sends automated emails to ANR describing in no uncertain terms what a louse the guy is. If he gets 100,000 emails in one day then the message will get through.

of course if he gets some revenue from all that then I would definitely say no to this tactic.

  174. of course I would not recommend that approach as it may be illegal :)

  175. The way to take him down is to have a prominent blogger write daily rebuttals. Most of the time he’s talking utter sh1te. Every article contains an invention. It’s amazing. You really just have to let people realise he talks so much sh1te. On the other hand, everybody I know, already knows this. I interact with God knows how many gooners daily and they all complain that the guy talks utter toss.

Writing letters don’t bug him because it shows Ian Grant, who’s a decent guy funny enough, that he’s popular.

Boycotting the site won’t work because you can’t organise a boycott.

  176. Ole,

Good line up. Tough first game of the season for Diaby if he is included. I’m a big believer that being thrown into the fire is the best way to see how people perform.

  177. I still get annoyed when people tell me “Arsenal don’t have the strength in depth of Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool”. We can debate the comparison with Man poo. I always concede Chelsea have a stronger squad, but will debate Man poo. But Liverpool?

Skrtel and Agger are injured, and who’s next in the pecking order? Ayala. The guy who was taken apart by Sanchez Watt in the FA Youth Cup final.

Imagine Vermaelen and Djourou were injured and we had to bring in Luke Ayling. And Ayling is a much better centre back than Ayala. To be fair, I was told Ayala was very well rated in Spain. But Ayling is better.

  178. The media’s defence of their recent love in with Man City and and the reason they have ignored some of the blatantly illegal approaches they have made will be that it will be good for the sport to break up the monopoly of the current top 4. I have 2 small issues with this.

    i) Haven’t we had a dominant team in the top division for decades.

ii) If Man City continue to spend the sums they have chucked about for the last 2 years and hire a competent manager they will break the top 4 (not at Arsenal’s expense in my opinion) and probably move on to win league titles, eventually dominating the PL. Does this not replace one monopoly with another? After all a team with unlimited funds should get to a point where no one can compete.

Surely if we want to see more variation in the top 4 that is not dependant of the size of your cheque book we should encourage the Wenger methodology. A system of producing players and bringing through talent. A system where a talented manager can assemble a team that will compete on ability and success is the reward for hard work and patience, not risking the very existance of your club in the hope of an instant fix?

  179. I think giving any kind of attention to this guy is a waste of time, money and human decency.

He doesn’t even have the guts to allow people to comment on his drivel…kind of a parallel Le Goof universe.

I still have %80 doubt that he is Howard in disguise or the other way around…

  180. Ole Gunner – I had a very unpleasant experience on Sunday afternoon. I found myself agreeing with Glenn Hoddle when he said the Spud’s had more strength in depth than Liverpool.

You know their is something deeply wrong in the world when it sounds like Glenn Hoddle is talking sense!

  181. Maybe Glenn Hoddle is counting Keane and Defoe twice since they sold them then bought them again?

  182. Alex-I’ve done the same thing too. Hate to think all my angry e-mails were just contributing to his revenues…

Ole Gunner-prominent blogger to post daily rebuttals? I think you just talked yourself into a new role! You’re the obvious candidate.

Gris Gris-very illegal and very creative. I’m sure if we have a fan in the outer reaches of Siberia and adept at programming, they would probably be safe from prosecution.

  183. Ole Gunner,

I can see an unchanged team for this one, although if Denilson is out injured or rotated, I would probably go with Ramsey over Diaby to allow Cesc to push forward more.

  184. I find it very hard to be upset with Man City to be honest. I hate the fact that any idiot can come in with a cargo ship of money and buy players for thrice their value.

  185. Ignore is my favoured option – starve him of the oxygen of publicity.

  186. For God’s sake, just stop reading Myles Palmer. Why would anyone want to spend a part of each day refuting his bullshit? Just ignore it.

  187. point taken, pz. But if there were to be one, I still would like to see OG take him down every day.

  188. It’s rather premature to talk of Man. City dominating the Premier League. It remains to be seen whether they will improve their position at all.

There is no such thing as unlimited funds. The oil pumpers will bankrupt themselves competing with competitors they’ve funded themselves. They might as well enjoy spending their money, because once their oil runs out there is no force on this earth that can prevent their countries reverting to the shittiest holes on the planet.

  189. I think that Man City buying their way to a challenge is great for the game, OG. What gets overlooked is that they will always have that hanging over their head (like Chelsea) if they win anything of substance. However, if Arsenal win any of the three major trophies, it will make the achievement even more noteworthy.

What will make it even more enjoyable is that Arsene wanted to let go of Ade and Kole and found the one club out there that would pay crazy money for the two of them. No doubt that if it wasn’t for Man City, we would be about 10 million less well off. He’s only held on at great cost to a valuable player twice (Henry and Vieira) and I don’t think he’ll let his heart rule his head again, even with Cesc.

  190. Marc @8:42

The other reason the media have had a recent love in with Man City and and the reason they have ignored some of the blatantly illegal approaches is the same reason they suck up to Abramobitch and to a certain extent Uzmanov.

It’s the persuit of favours, future exclusives, corporate hospitality and freebies, and boy do the Arabs like to lavish those that support them.

Hack’s are amoungst the greediest lowlives, they will follow the gravy train in whatever direction it goes without the slightest ounce of a conscience. These fuckers are up there with estate agents! Well, close.

  191. RE: ANR. Why does anyone care?

  192. Good points about the gravy train Pauley. Look at the way they were all sucking up to Usmanov after he wined and dined them to show them what a nice guy he is. The love of money is truly the root of all evil

  193. Marc,

I like Glen Hoddle. Now I’m off to wash my mouth with some vim.

But seriously, people are starting to see through Liverpool. But I feel offended to say Arsenal don’t match that. Anyway, the season is young. The truth is on the pitch and all that.

  194. ANR is an awful site…

  195. I’m sure someone has pointed this out before, but I wonder how similar the Ade and Kolo sale will be to the sale of Overmars and Petit to Barcelona.

I think we got 30-35 million for Overmars and Petit and approximately 40 million for Adebayor and Toure.

I think Arsene squeezed the best out of Petit and Toure, and I can easily see Kolo being a back-up defender next year as more recruits join up and the challenge gets fiercer from players like Onuoha.

Adebayor might have a decent enough first season like Overmars did, but when he realizes City won’t break through I can see his form tail off. That wasn’t the scenario with Overmars, but I can see Adebayor fall off like Overmars after the initial adrenaline rush has worn off.

  196. btw, was I living under a rock or did the retirement of Overmars THIS May after a bad tackle broke his leg get limited coverage?

  197. California Gooner

Quick question. Everton was just one match. But if we thump Celtic up at their place, then can we get excited? I don’t want to jinx anyone, but I have the feeling that Everton will not be the last we see of this Arsenal simply rolling over a team.

  198. Shame about Overmars if that’s the case Lagooner, what a great player. I still remember him scoring that goal at Old Kakford like it was last year.

  199. here’s the link-a yellow for that?

  200. Pz,

You have a point. But he has a wide readership beyond Arsenal fans. You need to know what he’s saying. I wish someone could email it to me so I don’t have to read his crap honestly.

    lagooner,

I am not even close to being a prominent blogger. Someone like Arseblog or Yogi. Even Untold Arsenal has the perfect platform. Honestly, I think it’s necessary to go on record to point out this guy’s nonsense. Take today for example. After saying for 1 year that we missed out on Alonso because Wenger wouldn’t cough up £2M extra, now he says a deal was never really on the cards. Someone should point that out to the gooks who hand on his every word.

This is the guy who says he’d seen Thomas Vermaelen play in the Euros when Vermaelen didn’t play the Euros. When we bought him he said he was a good defender. Once he saw that the mood was of uncertainty about TVs quality, he started suggesting TV might not be good enough. Even in his article today he was equivocal on the guy.

I believe in going on the record and stating how things are.

    Pauley and Passenal,

That’s exactly what’s going on. But it’s not all it is. Spending generates news. Generates expectations. generates stories. Journalists love that.

etter it will be for Arsenal. I’ve always believed that it’s harder for Arsenal

  201. I think Arsenal will score 5 or 6 a few times this season, but it’s unlikely that we’ll do it twice in succession.

  202. Ole Gunner

That’s why I said it would be a new role for you! More to the point, I do think that Myles Palmer would quite take to his martyr or in his mind , speaker of uncomfotable truths, so perhaps ignoring him is the only viable option.

With the abundance of Arsenal blogs out there, I’m surprised there isn’t an Arsenal blog review site where we can get a snapshot of the good and not so good. Maybe there is one, but I haven’t seen it.

  203. The dirty bastard! Could you imagine any of todays premier lge players hobbling off like that, what a guy.

Love the way the dutch get the local bouncers involved in footy quarrels aswell.

  204. even that short clip of him at the age of 36 brings back memories of his incredible grace and balance.

  205. Man City have one great attribute which will always attract press and media attention. They are from the North-West. The English football establishment including the hacks is essentially oriented towards clubs in the North-West.

  206. Alan Hansen states:

“Put their best XI on the pitch and Liverpool are a match for anybody, but the big problem is Nos 12 to 20.”

But he says they will win the title, whilst Arsenal are dismissed because of lack of “strength in depth”.

    Huh ?

  207. Muppet-

    Good piece in the telegraph. I particularly liked this quote;

    – Tony Adams, perhaps Arsenal’s greatest defender, has been quick to sound a note of caution. “I think Thomas is a very good player, but I don’t think he’s ready for Arsenal,” he said.

So that’ll be another jewell that Arsene’s uncovered then!

Jesus Tony, give it up mate, you couldn’t spot a brick wall whilst driving your Range Rover for fucksake let alone spot talent.

    Oh shit, so he was…….

  208. Muppet,

It drives me crazy. Our first 11 is stronger than Liverpool’s.

You know what steeled my solid belief in this team was that 4-4 draw at Anfield. Liverpool had their entire team fit except Gerrard. They were playing at home. We were missing Adebayor, RVP, Gallas, Almuni, Clichy, Sagna was barely fit. They had the referee against us. They were going for their first league title in 20 years, we had NOTHING to play for, and they could not beat us.

That’s when I got even more certain that this team is competitive.

  209. Thanks Muppet. Love the insight into our scouting policies. It also makes all the transfer gossip pointless. There could be a dozen players who might appear to be a great fit for the team but have a question mark about their training attitude or lifestyle that most of us are clueless about.

  210. Also Muppet, to be fair to Hansen, he did say there are flaws in the way we play the game.

What on earth that means. I think it means, we don’t play like that greatest team ever, Liverpool, the 1986 vintage, with the great Alan Hansen as captain.

  211. Fuk off Ade you lanky cu*t.

  212. Hansen was a very successful player.

  213. Ole Gunner,

Half agree with you about us vs Liverpool’s first XI. Gerrard and Torres are such key players for them that his absence will always throw them off. We have a more balanced first XI for certain, but Torres is capable of turning any game on its head as he’s shown against us in the Champions League.

Still, this season looks like we’ll be able to blunt him if Liverpool’s performance against Spurs is any indication of the trouble they are in.

  214. Alan (oh shit there’s a forward, I’ll just pass it all the way back to the goalie from the half-fuckin-way line) Hansen!

    The c@#t!

  215. ok. poli, we will take the 5 this time and then the 6 can follow against pompey

  216. Ole,

I didn’t realise that we had so many players out for that much. We were under the cosh for long periods, but still managed the draw, and really could have stolen it. But you are correct, I saw nothing in the Liverpool performance yesterday to suggest they are better than us. Quite the opposite in fact.

Lagooner – Yes. I think the point needs to be re-iterated that this is a professional sport and a lot of the valuations placed on players are sheer nonsense. Why Glen Johnson is worth 17M, but Sagna only cost 6M is a mystery. This country places too much emphasis on glitzy english premiership players who drive near formula 1 cars.

Pauley – Yes. I like Tony Adams. But one has to question his judgement. I think he would do well to go abroad for a much longer period and get more coaching experience.

  217. http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/08/17/1445926/arsenal-fans-made-life-hard-for-me-manchester-city-striker

Looks like we were mean to Ade. I hope we are able to show him our true feelings when he comes to the Emirates this season.

  218. top mids in prem.

    Fabregas, Arshavin, Lampard,Gerrard,Essien

    1 scouser, no mancs.

    top strikers in prem

    Rooney, RVP, Drogba,Torres,Eds,Anelka,

Looks like Arsenal Vs Chelsea for ze title.

  219. Senderos should stay back

  220. One other Ade note, I wonder if we had cheered him all season long, even when he was confusing a Chamipons League for a Sunday stroll, that he would have stayed with us.

It looks like it worked a treat for Everton’s fans with Lescott. In all seriousness though, you have to give credit to them for trying to show him love. Unfortunately, like a break-up, when the person has decided they want to leave, the last thing that works is smothering them…

  221. lagooner,

I favour us against them any day of the week. Our 11 against their 11. We simply have more matchwinners than they have. Torres can turn any game but so what? He was playing at Anfield, and they couldn’t beat us.

In the Champions League, it was Theo Walcott who turned the game. He was the one who went to sleep and allowed Babel make that run, leading to Babel’s dive. That’s what turned the game.

Their matchwinners: Torres, Gerrard, Kuyt, Benayoun (?).

Our matchwinners: RVP, Eduardo, Cesc, Nasri, Rosicky, Arshavin, Gallas….and since I counted Kuyt and Benayoun for them I’ll count Walcott &, Diaby, for us.

  222. If Arsene can get close to 5 million for Senderos he’s gone. I don’t think Arsene wants the clock to run down on his contract and he doesn’t look like he wants Senderos long term.

At this point, 4 million would be good value.

  223. You’re on very shaky ground if you try to mock Hansen’s ability as a player.

  224. Oh Adebarndoor, what denial, what ignorance, what a cock you are!

    Good riddance!

Then again he probably didn’t say those things at all did he , just some wanker hack trying to make scense and keep up with his 100mph babling…….
“Err is that what he said, yep I think so, must’ve been, fuck it that’s what I’ll write, that cunt Myles’ll lap it up at least anyway……”

  225. I would take our XI too. By saying balanced, that also includes having more match-winners and not being too reliant on two players. I would still argue that Torres is the best pure striker in the world, and that can make a difference in a tight match (particularly if we have Silvestre or Senderos playing due to injuries). We just need that 3rd/4th choice central defender to protect us against 2 of Vermaelen, Djourou or Gallas getting injured.

  226. I never particularly rated Hansen as a footballer. Never rated him as a man. Don’t rate him as a pundit.

  227. Sorry Yogi, “comment is awaiting moderation” and all that. Pardon moi!

  228. hate to compliment two Liverpool players in a row, but Hansen would probably be up there as one of the 10 best British central defenders over the last 40 years.

  229. Ole Gunner-

No, his missus never much rated him as a lover either apparently………the c@#k!

How such a sullen and miserable git continues to benefit from my license fee is beyond me, even the Scottish hate him and they get the b@stard for free.

  230. well, I think senderos at 23 going on 24 is not too old as a CB to fulfill his potential at arsenal…

in the past he has shown flashes of what he can do and I think he can get back to that form’

however, being in the last year of his contract as well as the world cuo next year may be what will actually force a move.

if ypur club wants to sell you and you dont want to go, i think the contract works both way so you can refuse.

4 – 0 to the arsenal away to celtic will be fine

  231. At some point we just have to stop taking pundits serious. Just read this: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/paul-parker/article/12581/

Who are these people and why are they on my computer screen?

  232. With 8 league championships and 3 European championships, I guess Hansen doesn’t need to be “rated” by anyone.

  233. Team Spirit

I think that it depends on the contract you sign. Some better players have restrictions built in to the contract but many don’t have that control. Where they are protected is that most contracts are absorbed by the buying club and they have to abide by the terms of that contract.

    OG
Maybe Top 10 is a little strong for Hansen….I just thought of 10 I would rather have and it took me 2 mins.

  234. Torres is no better than Eduardo in my view.

  235. If only liverpool were as good as their ex players are loyal.

  236. I had forgotten about Hansen being kept out of the Scottish team by Miller and McLeish. Even if it was based on chemistry between the players, that’s still a surprise looking back on his record with Liverpool.

Also, I wonder if Hansen has ever truly forgiven Fergie for dropping him from the ’86 World Cup squad for Mexico?

  237. Lagooner-

He may well have looked decent back then when you could endlessley pass back to the goalie(which he did), but in today’s game he’d be wripped a new whole with the pace and flair around. Otherwise he’d be sent off for his “clumbsy mistimed tackling”.

If they’re going to get a credible pundit then the least the BBC could do is get one that’s played or managed in the modern era. Shearer isn’t the best but he at least knows the pace and guile required to succeed nowadays, even if he can’t buy it for shit just now.

  238. If only Arsenal’s ex-players were as loyal as this Arsenal team is good.

  239. Muppet

Eduardo’s a more deadly finisher but I think Torres is still the best striker in the world. As much as I try to be completely biased towards our players, I can’t stretch it as far as saying Eduardo is up there with Torres right now. With more games under his belt, I can see it though, although combining Torres’s aerial ability and speed with Eduardo’s finishing would just about give you the perfect striker.

However, if you were Wenger and Liverpool offered a straight swap of Eduardo for Torres, you wouldn’t take it?

  240. Parlour for MOTD I say, worth the license fee alone, just don’t tell his ex.

  241. Whats the latest on the injury front people???

  242. Pauley

Can’t buy the argument about pundits needing to have played or managed in the modern era .

Brian Moore was probably my fav commentator of all time, and often involved punditry in his comments. I would take his insight over Shearer, Wright, Redknapp etc even if he were alive today.

If anything, some of the worst pundits are the the ones who have played or managed in the modern era (Brian Little, David Pleat-the list goes on…). They are usually given the job for name recognition over their analytical abilites.

  243. DukeGoonem

Not sure if you can leave defence out of the equation, otherwise we would not have been picked to win any titles under George Graham.

Ferdinand/Vidic make United more competitive, although I still think it’ll be Arsenal vs Chelsea in the final two weeks of the season.

  244. One final thing….if he comes, Chamakh will be our first mullet since Fabregas ( I don’t think Nic has had one). If so, the omens are good!

  245. California Gooner

Ole, I’m not sure why you get so worked up about pundits who don’t rate or appreciate Arsenal or Arsene. Who cares what Alan Hansen thinks?
I turn to ACLF when coverage of the health-care reform in this country leaves me depressed and convinced that Americans are simply too thick to deserve reasonably good health care for everyone at reasonable prices — something every other developed country seems to manage. Unfortunately, what poorly informed pundits think actually has an outcome on what happens.

So, I turn to Arsenal and I don’t have to care what these pundits say because unlike politics, where it matters, in football the opinions don’t affect the outcome of the game. If we score three up north tomorrow, smack Man U at OT in a couple of weeks, and everyone will sit up and notice.

  246. Doomers on vacation from Dooming?

  247. SO if cesc and Denilson out what are we thinking may happen in midfield for me …

    - – - Diaby – – – Song
    NB – - – -Arshavin – - – -Eduardo
    - – - – - – RvP

Also with Sagna out Right back is looking weak in depth

  248. What about the Joker….Eboue? Only positions he can’t play is Goalkeeper & out & out striker

  249. California Gooner

LOL, G4E! I checked out some of the typical doomer boards, such as gunnerblog, after the demolition of Everton and they were relatively quiet. I think they were a bit stunned, but no doubt have found their voice criticizing the naive over-enthusiasm of those of us who were genuinely thrilled.

  250. California Gooner

Cesc and Denilson out? I think Cesc will play and am surprised to hear about all-action Denilson. He looked fine during the game. Could we put Arshivin in Cesc’s position and Eboue or Eduardo in on one of the wings?

  251. I’m sure they still can find something to doom about CA Gooner…No one is overly enthusiastic, but we have to enjoy the moment…but I’m sure this logic doesn’t work with every one :)

  252. With reports of Denilson and Cesc injured for Tuesday night – I’m a bit sceptical. Both were seen training (running) at London Colney Monday (Sky news live on TV). So maybe AW is confident enough to rest his top 2 central midfielders. With many games next week there is some logic to this. I also think that playing Merida/Diaby and Song in the middle will confuse Celtic. They will have little idea of Diaby’s qualities and Merida similarly they will have no idea about, and his penetrating passing could be key, as it was against Rangers recently. Keep it tight at the back and try and nick an away goal or two.

  253. Also Cesc and Denilson both travelled to Glasgow with the team. Maybe keep them on the bench for the final 20 mins if necessary.

  254. “I have been slow to be convinced by Song, but his quality on the ball on saturday was a marvel. It diminishes what he brings to the side to call him just a defensive midfielder, or holding guy.”

He has always been good on the ball. He scored a pretty nifty goal last season by breaking through the defense on a deft one-two. He was also Cameroons main man in the middle in the olympics. The reason why Song can play DM is because of his skills on the ball. Otherwise, he’d be one more central defender.

  255. “I turn to ACLF when coverage of the health-care reform in this country leaves me depressed and convinced that Americans are simply too thick to deserve reasonably good health care for everyone at reasonable prices — something every other developed country seems to manage. Unfortunately, what poorly informed pundits think actually has an outcome on what happens.”

I feel your pain man. Funny how Arsenal supporters seem to be progressives. Did you read about Arsene Wenger following the US elections. He said that it was like watching Arsenal vs Man United. MU being the republicans of course.
