Season Preview

The summers turbulence is over, the only departure left on the cards would seem to be Philippe Senderos, a player who essentially left the club last season for pastures new. A brief resurrection in midfield during the short central European tour quite possibly a false dawn for the player, his omission from The Emirates Cup more telling about his future plans. It leaves one new player arriving although rumours persist that Vermaelen will not be the last. Most probably Marouane Chamakh, a direct replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Much has been made of last season’s shortcomings when the crunch came. The players must grow from such adversity if they are to bring silverware home. The Champions League exit was inevitable once one hundred minutes of the tie had been played. The FA Cup? Partly poor performance but also the inexplicable decision to leave Arshavin on the bench, at that time the team’s most potent goal threat. I still do not subscribe to Wenger’s theory that the team had to know that they could win without him. They knew they could having done so in previous seasons. It suggested that the attitude which Manuel Almunia pointed to needed adjusting – was it confidence or genuine underestimation of their own abilities?

Whatever the reason for the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea, dwelling upon it should not happen. Instead, much confidence should be taken from the twenty-one game unbeaten run. Those spring months proved that this squad could beat the teams from the lower echelons of the Premier League, victories that guarantee a title challenge if that form is maintained over the course of a season.

The spell included too many draws, particularly early as winter turned to spring yet confidence should be taken from those games. It was a signal that the much criticised inability to grind out a result when performances were poor, had been to some extent eradicated. A pity that it took so long to achieve that last season, the damage done already by five defeats in the opening fourteen games.

The squad itself looks more balanced to me this summer than last. Almunia is a better goalkeeper than twelve months ago, Fabianski will have benefitted from the games he played at the tailend of last season, no matter how painful the results then. At full back, Wenger is spoiled. His first choice pairing of Sagna and Clichy are two of the most consistent. A couple of goals from each of them in a season would make them the best in the Premier League, without argument. In reserve, Eboue and Gibbs are more than capable of playing for sustained runs should injury strike.

Centrally, questions remain. Vermaelen is no slouch, you cannot be captain of a side and play internationally without a modicum of talent. The Premier League is different but one aspect of Wenger’s reign is the depth with which the Belgian will have been scouted. He and Gallas need to develop a solid understanding quickly. In reserve is where the inexperience lies. Song and Djourou have not played a great deal of time in the centre of the defence yet when called upon, neither has let the side down individually.

Midfield has already felt the blow of injuries. Nasri will miss the first month whilst Rosicky, well goodness knows when or for how long he will return, more is the pity. To have him on the bench for the first eight weeks whilst he regained his match fitness, would have been a tangible boost to the squad. As it is, the quality is still there, Fabregas, Walcott, Arshavin and Song range from the world class to the highly promising. Diaby and Denilson more than ample back up to the more traditional midfield role. Yet question marks still hang over those perceived as lesser members.

In the case of the Brazilian I am not sure why. Denilson uses possession well. The Arsenal way requires ball retention, very much based on pass and move. Denilson carries that ethos and would rather find a colleague in free space than hit hopeful balls forwards into space where possession may be surrendered. It says much about how people watch the game that the basics, such as sensible ball usage, interceptions and tackles are overlooked, the adventurous praised, without realising that the pair are inextricably linked; one cannot thrive without the other.

The strength in depth of the squad shows with the younger players but some reticence in the fulsome praise is required. Without completing a full Premier League game, Jack Wilshere is already being booked a seat on board the England charter jet for South Africa next summer. That reflects more the paucity of talent available to Fabio Capello than Wilshere’s abilities. No disrespect is intended to Wilshere in that but if an untried teenager is the great hope of English football, little wonder that in excess of 50% of the players in the Premier League are not natives.

In terms of readiness, Aaron Ramsey is a season ahead. Whilst he showed glimpses of the talent that persuaded Wenger to spend £5m last summer, he needs more playing time to build the consistency that a first team spot requires. He will, like Traore, be spending a lot of time on the bench gaining that experience this season.

The strikeforce has the potential for goals but is equally prone to injuries which gives sense to Wenger’s pursuit of Chamakh. Eduardo’s lengthy recovery nears its completion but we have already seen that hamstring and other strains can do for a player in their rehabilitation. He has the potential to score 20 goals, his international record and the form he found himself in before Martin Taylor’s assault were testament to that. He does not appear to have suffered ill-effects mentally although I am sure that niggling doubts still remain in his mind and will do so until the first crunching tackle is overcome.

Bendtner showed good form in the latter stages of the season and I suspect, will be one of Arsene’s first choice strikers in the early part of the season, at least. He needs to score quickly, not just for his confidence, but to ensure that he does not become the target for hecklers. Vela likewise showed promise at the tail end of the season with some good performances. He will develop more this season and I believe play a larger role although perhaps more as an understudy for Arshavin.

Crucial to the forward line is van Persie, for goals and creation. He seems likely to be the spearhead in any 4-3-3/4-5-1 and has proven his eye for goal. Having signed a new contract, expressing his desire to win trophies, much of that responsibility will fall on his shoulders in terms of the goals. He should be capable of 20 per season which if matched by one of his partners, will set the team well.

A repetitious point I know but every season the common theme is that the midfield need to score more frequently. Walcott and Fabregas should, between them, be scoring 20 goals per season. They do not and although hampered by injuries, their goals per game ratio is not good enough. The season before, goals came from the midfield and a title challenge mounted. For the latter, the former has to happen.

And therein is the rub. The expectations outside of the club are that we will retain our top four place but nothing more. The most optimistic prediction I have seen was 2nd place. This squad can go further than that but they need to start well, keep fit but most importantly, believe. Oh, and the small matter of us getting behind them vocally rather than to knife them in the back may well help.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. first?

  2. Booyah!

  3. Third!!! Woo-hoo!

  4. Fourth!!! Just like my beloved Arsenal.

  5. Nice concluding message for London-resident Arsenal fans: “Oh, and the small matter of us getting behind them vocally rather than to knife them in the back may well help.”

  6. Great post Yogi.

On a side note, i have just seen an interview with Stuart Pearce stating that we shouldn’t overhype Jack Wilshere, that we should let him develop and protect him.

So why did Pearce pick a 17 year old with virtually no Premiership experience for the U21′s then?

    The man is a buffoon.

  7. Great positive Season Preview. Just what we need 3 days from the big KO.

Your points about Denilson esp are spot on.

  8. Great stuff YW – I particularly like your piece on Denilson

” It says much about how people watch the game that the basics, such as sensible ball usage, interceptions and tackles are overlooked, the adventurous praised, without realising that the pair are inextricably linked; one cannot thrive without the other.”

I think Denilson is going to be a huge player for us this yr. I’m a season ticket holder & paid close attention to him last season, and he went a number of home games without making a single mistake. For me, he’s a much better player than Gilberto Silva, he used to give the ball away way too much.

My major concern is Rosicky. His injury was horrible & am i right in saying his surgery was experimental? I think he could be finished, i really do.

  9. Appologies for the off topic rant, but i cant help it.

I have strenuosly avoided reading that ANR site, having got the jist of it from people´s disgust. However for only the 4th time i bothered to read it today – a pure disgrace.

That semi-functioning toe-rag who wrote that letter (what odds it is a ringer?) just lied pure and simple. You get more sense on jerry springer and less emotional tosh from oprah. This is football, no one cares about your personal torment, pull yourself together.

In the last 4 years we have had 2 good runs in europe and were robbed blind in the QF another time by two incompetant refs. These were exciting, invigorating games, the sort you look forward to as a fan. The final, though lost, ranks as one of my proudest moments as an arsenal fan for the teams display that night.

To say our football has been dire since winning the fa cup is dispicable. Of course it cant be proved or disproved, a subjective measure, but one that no sane person would agree with.

I dont understand these fools who get no joy from watching the arsenal – i am thankful every day that i was born an arsenal fan, it brings me great happiness.

I dont understand how they see no beauty in anything other than trophies; that is all there ravings amount to, a shallow misconception for simpletons.

Even in spite of this, the version of history they try to pass off as opinion is a fraud, just like them.

I never read le grove, i will never read that dire ANR site again. If there was any justice the club would just recind his membership and give it to someone who would enjoy it and next time his son and mates are chatting arsenal at his dj night someone with soul would headbutt the little shit.

  10. Nice squad analysis.

I think a good start is essential, fitness we can only pray for, but if we start well it will create belief and we will need to fight for it with the games we have coming up.

  11. Posted this on an old thread. Re. Subotic rumours.

If Subotic really can cover as RB then he’d be a quality signing. Cover at Right back and centrehalf for 12 million? Yes please.

    Has anyone seen him play?

With that extra cover Song would be free to concentrate on becoming the midfield general we all know he can be.

If he’s all out centre half I’m not so keen – as Djourou would surely get bumped down the order. Maybe that’s just a knee-jerk reaction but (ahem)…

Breaking into the serbian national team so young is impressive. Maybe Hangeland was a smokescreen all along? After all, as I’ve said before, Hangeland is debilitatively one-footed, untested in a high-line, kind of slow and worryingly contented to stay at Fulham when he should by all rights be ‘doing a chamakh’ to get himself playing in red.

Also, stumbled, quite by accident, onto ANR this morning. Caught a glimpse of something depressing. Something dark…

Strangest quote – “Supporting Arsenal is the hardest thing in my life – it’s so upsetting.”

Then why not just, F*CK OFF!

  12. I am suprised it has taken you this long to get to the stage where you won’t read ANR, AH.

  13. Non Edible Nacho

Subotic signed a new contract some weeks ago. I doubt he’s coming, and it wouldn’t be surpising to see the Daily Mail fabricating something completely, but we’ll see.

  14. Subo is due to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in september, Adebayor has booked front row seats

  15. Matt – only the 4th time i have ever read it dude, i could tell from what people say on here that it would just infuriate me.

Limpar – never heard of the kid, but he sounds great! Let´s hope.

It doesnt look likely that any new defender we buy will play a huge ammount before christmas if people stay fit, it must take time to learn the sytem a bit at a new club and they will have had no preparation.

We should see a lot of different players this next 2 weeks, with 5 games in 15 days. Personally i would be very surprised if by the end of that denilson isnt a guaranteed starter in all the big games. He defends better in miodfield than song does, he reads the play better, intercepts, and doesnt give away clumsy free-kicks.

  16. Yogi – that should be required reading. You don’t shy away from criticism despite that hideous overloaded bandwagon of criticism which rumbles through the blogoshpere and more traditional media but overall the tone and detail are accurate and positive.
Come on guys we need to be the 12th man this season not the 5th column.

  17. Read one paper, forget which, saying that the talk about Vieira was all just a ploy by wenger to get fabregas and van persie to take more responsibility. A bit of indirect criticism of the current ´leaders´in the dressing room?

Must sting the pride having everybody write you off, i think we will come out fighting, scoring goals and show some steel at the back. By the end of cotober we will top of the league and never look back – we have been there before this time.

  18. Something that seems to be written out of most analysis is the improvement we made throughout last season, credit to yogi for highlighting the undefeated sequence though.

Take for example the sky.com preview. The guy basically assumes that thsi is the same side, with the same problems that started last year. Obviously not the case if you watched the team progress, again as yogi said, becoming able to grind out results.

Wenger is quoted online today as saying that the age of the squad means that they can improve, unlike our rivals.

What if walcott, bendtner, djourou, denilson, song, gibbs, ramsey all show the same amount of improvement this year they did last?

  19. I agree with arsenehollis, when he says that Denilson
is a better defender in mid-field than Song and just because song is bigger it doesn’t conclusively make him a better …

  20. Didn´t take long for the mail´s subotic rumour to get ruined. Why cant our players have agents that keen to destroy tabloid tattle?

My vote for this years denilson, ie: reserve to regular – johan djourou. I think that if he stays fit he will be undropable by christmas.

That said, any chance senderos plays this saturday, if djourou and vermaalen are out?

  21. AH

Vermaelen is supposedly fit enough so expect him to make his debut.

    YW

  22. Perhaps Pearce’s decision to pick Jack was at the instigation of Capello?

  23. Anyone watch Nacer and Jack last night? I bet Jack would have loved being in an orange shirt. Assuming he’s not hidebound by petty nationalism of course, I mean purely from a footy point of view.

  24. great post yogi

i think you are right about rosicky he might be finished.but it depends on how the physio should treat him.but yet if he returns it will be a major boost for us.and about eduardo to if he can maining his goal scoring the way he showed in that everton game then premiereship is back to NORTH LONDON FOR SURE.

  25. arsenehollis,
Are you in fact Johan Djourou?

  26. perrygroves

I don’t have much regard for Pearce, so I would call your perhaps a definite..

  27. My shout for this year’s Denilson is Ramsey. Maybe I’m being a bit premmy but he looked very hungry in preseason, he’s got great technical skill and a great attitude.

I heard Ramsey spent the summer training with his dad and brother in the valleys. Doing old school Welsh things like running through rivers with rocks on his back, cracking boulders and tossing cabers (or the welsh equivalent… big dead sheep?).

I read a piece before the Six Nations about the Welsh rugby team’s au natural approach to training, involving similarly hardcore endeavours -and lot’s of broken slate and granite. And look how tough they turned out?

So prepare yourselves for Ramsey the beast.

  28. It’s so easy to see why Wenger wont make signings, You have Diaby, Song and Denilson jockying for that one regular spot. It seems Diaby is losing out (I hold the most hope for him, potentially my favourite). With calls for A DM it would ruin one of the three mentioned players Arsenal career, not to mention Ramsey’s.

We all know what theses lads are ‘capable’ and at times seen pure class football. But we also need the finished article now.

What would you do, it’s a difficult decision, personally I think i’d keep what we got, but add vieira as a mentor and occasional stand in.
Giving the lads someone to learn from, and a bit more time to mature.

I think the only problem with the youth of the squad is that when you look at the best players in the world regarding some positions they are all 26 years +. If we can keep this team happy get some deserved silverwear to appease the lads. When this crop hit late 20′s. We will have the greatest Arsenal team i’ve had the delight to watch.

Also going off on one now out of curiosity how many games did cesc and Arshavin get together last season? Cant have been to many I want to see those to fellahs getting an understanding together (drools).

  29. ANR borders on the clinically insane at times, but the worst blog that keeps coming up in NewsNow is Arsenal Action – seems like a really badly disguised (+ incoherent) PR exercise for Fat & Orange.

Am feeling really positive about this season, let’s hope those fans that believe can send some good vibes to our players at Everton on Saturday.

    p.s. great post again, YW.

  30. Limpar also Diaby didn’t take a break and trained hard all summer supposedly. We got the team with the most hunger in midfield, maybe all these negative comments about our flimsy midfield will have a positive effect. Got to get behind our lads. NO MATTER WHAT, like Yogi said no knives in the back.

  31. We are arguably stronger going into the season than at any point in the last 5 years.

By contrast, Chelsea, ManU and Liverpool are weaker.

Forget the prophets of doom, I think we’re going to win the lot.

  32. Thanks YW, awesome read, hats off for the Den stance…everybody says ‘stats prove nothing’ but if he completed more passes, made more tackles and covered more ground then anybody else (and his assist for Shevas’ 1st goal v Blackburn – pass of the season??) …ummm, they are facts, not stats. Our defensive errors last season were as a unit, not individual – on the whole.

I’m really positive for this season but more for the future of the club…if that cash from sales goes to paying off chunks of our debt – I’m happy, I would rather have a club to support in two years, rather than a trophy this year – and I want Wenger to be there running it. I like the way he plays the media, deflects from the players, uses the tools at his disposal to keep prices down…hats off. from ’04 on we 25mil in credit on players and have been in touch with those that have gone a hundred mil over even though thay cant sustain it (great interview with Paddy Barclay in the Times, btw)…

And I agree, ANR and Le Grove should be launched inrto the centre of the sun or sent to hang out with the Spuds – we don’t need or want your kind.

  33. Hi, great article as usual. Been following your blog for a few months and I greatly enjoy your posts.
Agree especially with that last point about supporting our players; too often have I seen and heard too many undermining our players, which is really sad indeed. This squad is still young and can only get better. Cheers =)

  34. Chelsea are weaker because they are another year older?

  35. I was looking at old clips of rosicky. He has been injured people have forgotten his potential. What talent , pace and skill? I hope we get half a season each from persie and him.

  36. perry – also they have to build understandings with a new manager and his staff. They have little in terms of emerging talent coming through.

    They are a “known quantity”.

  37. Arsenal Action even beats Le Grove.

  38. YW

when you mentioned that jack shouldnt be overhyped i believe so to. but i think people should give him time rather than jump him to become a superstar straight away.but thats the problem with english press overhyping players at young age but who knows how he is gonna play when he keep progressing his footbal. hope he plays his cards well and hopelly become better than wayne rooney.

  39. Very balanced view YW

Unlike some on here who think there is nothing wrong with the squad and that we will win the league.
Cant agree about RVP though yes he will get 20 goals but not 20 league goals. And that is why we should be so angry we let Huntelaar an out and out goalscorer slip away.I have my doubts that Eduardo will start more than 50% of the games and Bendtner wont score goals stuck on the wing!!!!!
I think this will be a really hard season for us and a lot depends on the start we make,2007-08 we made a great start last season we didnt get out of the block 5 defeats by november.A poor start this season and it will be a fight for 4th place
I thimk we will finish 4th because we dont have the strength in depth.Fabianski,Silvestre,Eboue.Diaby do not inspire confidence.I want to see Jack wilshire start more games than both Eboue and Diaby
And the honeymoon period is over for Theo it is time for him to deliver

  40. It’s to early to hype Jack. He just might not work out like Vernazza. I was so excited about that guy.

Chelsea are weaker as they are another season older, we are stronger as we are another season older. The times are-a changing.

  41. Donald I think we’ll get more than 50% starts from eduardo, I don’t think his injury is the same as Rosicky as it was an isolated incident, were as Rosicky is prone to many. I really hope that RVP, Eduardo, Rosicky can put the injuries behind. As then we will score so many goals.

  42. A question.

Did we lose any games last season where Arshavin started?

    I don’t think we did.

By the way, I would put Arsenal Action ahead of both ANR & Le Grove, as the most negative sites on the internet. The guy who writes that is clearly a Spuds fan! Myles Palmer is just an arrogant, supercilious idiot, with a massively over-inflated opinion of himself.

  43. The season has not even started and the shadow of Silvestre looms large. With Vermaelen struggling and Djourou injured Silvestre might play!

We need a CB and we need to get rid of Silvestre.

Senderos will not make it at Arsenal. He’ll go to Evertion in all likelihood

  44. limpa ASSIST

i think you are right about the fact ramsey might become a good playa in years to come.and when he plays his twist and turns reminds of hleb so thanks for mentioning that.

  45. thank god for this blog.
if i had to read le grove everyday i would slit my balls. the squad looks very good on paper to me, plenty of options. i love the way people are calling for signings but how many actually work out? spurd policy of buying mid range 15-20 certainly doesnt

  46. Great positive comments as ever AIC, right behind the team, never giving aid or succour to our rivals.
    You knob.

  47. Polizano – unfortunately not, im poor, fat, and have no chance of playing for arsenal. Other than that i might just be Johan Djourou.

I think Djourou was our best defender last season, maybe sagna excepted.

I think that he will be a revelation this season, gallas will fight as ever, and vermaalen might add something to. I am actually starting to think that our defence might be a strong point.

Remember the summer before we wet undefeated, Kolo had never even played CB for us before.

Djourou looks as composed as ever, but also more aggressive this preseason – he will be a major player for this club for years.

  48. ‘unfortunately not, im poor, fat, and have no chance of playing for arsenal’

You should also work on your dress sense

  49. stewwwwwwwwwwwwww do you ever stop whining about other people? You probably even sleep whine.

AIC, Then Senderos will not make it at Everton and end up at Sunderland, in two years he’ll be joined by Denilson, Diaby and Eboue aka the three stooges

  50. i think having arsharvin playing for the full season will be major bonus for our attack.but it depends on the way he protects his feet on the field.and i think our team attack is better than any opposition team in EPL.but we must not concede bunch of flowing goals as we did last season and recent seasons.

  51. Seems to be this unquestioned assumption, mainly amongst negative writers on the net, that the club belongs to the fans. It validates there treacherous abuse of our club, just about every aspect of the Arsenal when you take them as a whole.

It is of course quite a populist stance, people like to feel connected, especially latecomers. Of course proving that is a little tricky, the club of course belongs to the shareholders, a couple of whom have paid far more than the most expensive season tickets for a stake in recent years.

That the fans pay money that maintains the clubs finances is not in truth a grounding for individuals to say without restraint, whilst talking for others who sooner be dead than associate with them, that the club is ‘ours’ as a spokesman for the multitude.

On a less literal reading, the fans are of course the soul of the institution and do maintain it, television revenues not withstanding. However, what an individual adds to that is tricky and certainly doesn’t do much.

However, can any individual fan in good faith say that the club is ‘ours’ not Wenger’s? It is neither of course, rather an institution with history, and values transcending appropriation, however some have a better claim to that heritage than others.

Wenger has given 13 years of his life to the club with utter dedication and poured his talent into making it something more than when he arrived. Much as i love it, i cannot say that i would lay claim to a piece of the club over him.

What seems so galling, is that the people spouting this righteous guff hold it as justification for trashing the team, the manager, and the what they have produced in the 4 years since history began for them. If he measured success in the way they do, or loyalty, he would have been off many years ago to a club with more money, ready stars and easy pots rather than guiding us through what has been a transition from home to another and the difficulties that has entailed.

These people do not speak for me, they are not a part of the thing that i adore: the physical individuals, style, grace, or class.

  52. riley8, Arshavin will be player of the season and will hopefully win us fourth spot. I just hope his stamina will last all season because he will be working very hard

  53. AIC & James

You have my vote for worst supporters

  54. Arsenehollis,

I think you’re right about Djourou’s role in years to come. I’m just not sure he’s as far along as you suggest. I agree he’s certainly composed, and has other qualities too, like strength and touch – but I am yet to see the necessary bite and sharpness in last ditch situations that sets top defenders apart. The real quickness of thought that gets you that vital split second block. Reaction time in short.

Maybe I just haven’t seen him tested like that yet.

It takes a lot of playing time to make a rounded centreback though, and he hasn’t had it yet..

  55. arsenehollis, what a load of shit

  56. Djourou will be amazing for us this year, he is good both in the air and with ball to feet

  57. chris, you have my vote for the supporter least likely to ever meet a life partner

  58. Limpar – not sure dude, i think he looks like the real deal. Thus far in preseason our main problem has been through balls splitting the offside trap, but i think some added intensity might see that off when the games start proper. I really am starting to think our defence could be a strength this season.

  59. chris, djourou has the talent but he is to weak, he’s another rosicky, he’s not class, he’s glass

  60. Eloquent jimbo, a very sharp description of your contribution on here. Last time i respond to your waffle, shouldn’t have this time but what the hey.

  61. Good post arsenehollis.

  62. James the Spud Mug

Go home little boy, you input on this site is seriously shit.

  63. arsenehollis

I feel the same, i don’t know why i bother… we need to send the guy to some sort of rehab i think :)

  64. Arsenehollis, I’m obv hoping he steps up this season and does us proud. But I see Vermaelen as far further along. Very commanding, very strong, great positioning and bags of confidence.

James, life partner? You a fan of alternative lifestyles?

  65. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2009/20090812_075334_arsenal-lache-chamakh.html

OG if you are reading, could you please decipher the link for us?

  66. Just send him away Chris, that would do, rehab suggests he can be helped, stupid just is though.

What do people think of the celtic away game? They are pretty tough at home in europe. I would be pretty happy with a draw I think, sandwiched between PL victories.

Might see quite an unexpected starting 11 for the first home game, with celtic then the mancs up later that week.

This qualifier does make it tough, but 10 points from these first 4 games and we will really be on form.

  67. james

you might be right and i personally think we are not ready till wenger finds a new DM AND CB.i am trying my best not to write negative comments cause some so called fan might attack me.and i heard hangeland has 48 hours to make his decision if he is to sign for us.

  68. I think we’ve got the focus and composure to overcome the celtic some support. And on the pitch our technical superiority will see us dominate and turn on the style.

Look at Fenerbache and Villareal last year. Both hostile grounds. Both great responses from our boys.

  69. *home support*

  70. arsenehollis

Im looking forward to it, its better to get the hard games out the way from the start. Take 1 game at a time, im expecting a result at Goodison firstly and a fine performance from the lads.

Im going for 3-0. feel confident

  71. Alex
The article basically says that AW won’t up his bid for Chamakh, has informed the player, who is very disappointed. AW says main reason is price, and that he’s not that keen on buying a Centre Forward. West Ham and Fulham are interested. Ful. might do a player exchange deal involving D.Kamara.

    Great read Yogi. Kudos.

  72. Does anybody know how many games cesc and arshavin played together?

  73. Thanks a lot Oslo gooner.

  74. Chris, dont be such a nancy all your life. I disagree with you, get over it.

Arsenehollis, I’m sorry but your post earlier about fans feeling they own the club was the most ridiculous statement i’ve ever read or heard, ever. Good work.

  75. Bendtner 52

Any predictions for arsenal’s top scorer this season, Premier League and all competitions?

  76. “James, life partner? You a fan of alternative lifestyles?” hahahahahahahahaaa funny.

  77. Again, a reasoned, meaningful response to someone else’s opinion. Well done, now back in the corner with the hat on.

  78. riley8

So how did you overcome the negativity you need to keep pouring onto our fine club. Did you go to rehab by any chance?

  79. Imagine if we went the season without RVP or Eduardo injuries? 35+ goals there alone.

  80. els

The prospect is very exciting, cant bloody wait for it all to start and our boys to show what they are made of.

  81. One question to all those wanting a DM; who do you want? I’m pretty sure Melo and Veloso are decent players, but have you really seen them play? Veloso is constantly linked with Bolton and I can’t see why he would’t be linked whith Chelski, Manure or Spuds (who’ll buy anything whith two legs) if he really was that great. OK, Melo went to Juve. Good team, but we’d still beat them home and away. I’d like AW to buy Mikel, but that’ll never happen. He was great as an AM for my team in Oslo, Lyn, and has done a very good job as DM at Chelski. way too pricey for AW I guess, and why leave Cashley Cole and the gang..

  82. Silvestre started 21 games for us last season, I hope that number goes down a lot.

Djourou started 25, gallas, and tour managed 36 and 38 respectively.

The club played 60 games last season. Would probably be good if we could get 2 guys contributing regularly, rather than 4 chopping and changing all the time.

  83. Riley8, i know dude, alot of the people on this blog cant handle the truth, and others are just plain Doughnuts. I am here to balance the books. Chrisgoona secretly loves me.

  84. It is not that logical oslo, you dont have to know what should be done, or even have any experience managing a team or scouting players, you just need to say ‘me no like, want new’ and that is enough.

  85. Bendtner’s changed his squad number to 52 because it means a lot to him-the number.

Is the new squad number “52″ supposed to show he’s the inverse of Adebayor’s “25″, or twice the player he was when he wore number 26?

  86. The truth? People are laughing at you, try that for starters Scully.

  87. chrisgoona

i learnt that they is no need to judge anyone in this world.and thats why i started to be more positive. and when you mention i overcame rehab that really hurt abit but i wont be mad at you on that.

  88. Ole – i like the headline that ‘Bendtner explains switch’ when he does nothing of the sort, just says he wanted to to because he has reasons, personal ones that he wont share.

Maybe it is a goals target for the season?

  89. Oslo Gooner

If I could pick a midfielder from Chelski it would be Essien without hesitation. I don’t honestly think we need a midfielder with Denilson, Ramsey, Song, Diaby, Cesc, Nasri = 6 players for 3 places. Even then i haven’t included Rosicky, who has played centrally before, and the versatile Eboue.

I think up front Wenger was looking for a backup target man, but only if he saw anything worth buying – if he rated Chamakh that much he would have got him for sure. Right now i think a defender is high on the list.

  90. You to riley. Prophets everywhere.

  91. arsenehollis
I guess you’re right. I just have too high expectations from Arsenal fans. Since our coach is a genus, the football they play is brilliant, then I automatically take for granted that all our fans are as clever. My fault.

  92. If silvestre started 21 games last year then we really need a new defender.

  93. Oslo – strange isnt it, wenger is a genius in the transfer market and yet people still second guess him so much.

  94. James don’t flatter yourself mate, theres a difference between the truth and what you see in the media. You will learn that when you grow up.

  95. Good post Yogi!

I personally think the squad is not bad but DM position MUST be addressed (that is a bare minimum) for us to have ANY chance. More signings would be welcome.

I had seen song as our ONLY defensive midfielder last season, he is average he was all we had. I dont want to go on too long about denilson, I give credit to the lad that he has worked hard and improved a lot, but putting it bluntly, he is at best a GOOD squad player.

He is not the answer to be a first choice in a team chasing the title thats for sure. He is important to the squad and people argue that he has improved. I AGREE, but there is a certain limit that certain players can go. For example john o shea has improved a lot in the last 4 years and is undoubtedly a CRUCIAL member of uniteds squad, but we can say for certain that if o shea becomes first choice central defender, United will win nothing.

With all due respect to denilson and song, it is plain to see the DM position must be rectified and I am HOPEFUL that arsene will address it before sept. 1. Song and denilson I might add, would be EXCELLENT back ups, its a long season lets not forget, and if they prove me wrong during the season, all the better for our club.

The view about vermaelen is understandable to an extent, but I still do have doubts about him. No doubt he will be decent enough, being a former ajax captain, but the question is… is he what we need?

Remember, neither gallas nor toure were bad defenders, the PROBLEM was that both were similar and were not complimenting each other. We desperately needed an aerially dominant partner for EITHER of them.

Granted, height does not a defender make, but it does make a difference you see. vidic with all his talent would certainly be less of a defender if he was 5’11 as would have rodders or bould. Anyway, lets see how he holds up in the heat of competition, he may be the answer but I am going to believe it when I see it.

    Fingers crossed…

    Cheers all!!!

  96. What a great season preview. Agree with all your comments 100%. I personally am drooling at the prospect of the football this team will play this season.

As an exiled Gooner living in Scotland, I am also looking forward to the demolition job they will do on Celtic.

Old Firm for the Premiership….don’t make me laugh!

  97. Ole

He really changed his number to 52, havn’t read that yet!

  98. He will personally cover the cost to change the shirt number of those who purchased with his number. Nice, who got 26 Bendtner??

  99. Riley, chrisgoona suffers from low self esteem which is why he personnaly attacks you dude, he is getting better, I am currently informing him of arsenalhollis of the truth, they are beginning to listen, i’m getting through to them

  100. ChrisGoona
I also rate Essien highly, but Mikel fits better in AWs philosophy regarding young players etc. And he also has an attacking gene which would fit in a system that AW plays. But I agree, CB a higher priority, given that Gallas is sure to have an injury, and a RB/CB could give good cover.
But in Wenger I trust, we’ll win something this year. Preferably the Premiership. :D

  101. You guys really dont know much about the club you are supposed to support do you?

How can you not know why Bendtner has changed his number?

  102. One of the best post’s you have written YW, and that’s saying a lot, thanks …

I like the observation that before Arsenal buys there is an exhaustive monitoring and checking (re Vermaelen). I’m not sure I recall offhand a single dubious purchase of an established player.

Els, nice comments too … and ArseneHollis …

Of course the big IF at Arsenal is the support. Some blogsites out there have all but ‘declared war’ and it is ‘personal’ against Wenger (=French, youth, African, and even stylish football too).

  103. Naga gunner

Obviously you gave up watching Arsenal by the end of the season, in the games that mattered and 2nd half of the season Song was immense. Also Denilson proved to be one of the top midfielders in the league, FACT, your kind (the Denilson haters) are long gone. Get over it.

“I am going to believe it when I see it.” – Show some support, its easy for any of us to sit hear and criticse.

  104. James,

Why, which club are you supposed to support?

  105. Oslo Gooner with what I want from a DM height experience aggression passing and pace, I can’t think of anyone.

I’d like to go for a player bizzarely in their 30′s to help guide the others that would realise the move was for a season or two, that way it would give our guys breathing space to develop as the 3/4 we have tick must of my boxes. Just experience needed. Therefore Vieira or Senna would get my vote. I know it would never happen not the Wenger way, and to be honest I wouldn’t question him.

  106. James stop following my comments. Start getting an opinion of your own please, your getting extremely boring and I’m starting to think your in fact obsessed with me!!!

  107. James is very confused, its what happens when you support Spurs and claim to be a Gooner

  108. ChrisGoona!

How am I, as you put it, “the Denilson hater”?

  109. Chrisgoona, I’m stickng up for one of the posters on here you try bullying whilst sitting behind your computer screen. Young people like Riley8 have enough pressures without some ill-informed numpty telling them to ‘f**k off’ and calling them retarded all the time, you should be ashamed of yourself.

  110. Just check Denilson’s stats. He did a superb job. Song needs to continue the progress he made last half of the season, I’m keeping the faith. Diaby shows moments of brilliance, hopefully he’ll be able to keep some consistency this year.
All we need is to unite the fans, but then reading all these blogs would become a bore. ;)

  111. ZimPaul thanks man

  112. So long as out central defnders play well together, I don’t care if they ever compliment one another.

  113. ***To Everyone***

Can everyone please let everyone else have there opinion without being rude to them. I’m mainly talking to Chrisgoona, Arsenehollis, Adweeb, consolshimself & Stewwwwwwwwww.

The Queen of Suburbia can do whatever the hell she likes

  114. Adebayor,Toure (and probably Senderos in the near future) sold and only one player bought so far – Vermaalen. Injuries already to Nastri,Rosicky( what a surprise) and now Djourou. Still stuck with Denilson,Song and Dialby ( who will still be as useless as ever) – cannot share any of the crazy optimism for the new season. We have 2 difficult away matches in the next week against 2 very physical sides with many players who score from set pieces. With our hopeless defence we will be lucky to scrape a couple of draws. I just hope Wenger has a plan to buy the additional players we need before the deadline otherwise we are in for a worse season than the last!

  115. In don’t know PZ might be nice if they took each other aside to mention how good the hair style looks.
    Could do wonders for morale.

  116. ***To Everyone*** (Just James)

Have your say but realise we need to stop the negativity as it is based on fiction from the media, not based on fact. It is affecting our club on the pitch. It comes to something when we boo our own players and call for WENGERS dismissal.

  117. els, Dont get caught up in them fools blaming the media for everything. What about the FACT that ive watched some players myself and feel that they are crap? The FACT that our team was getting bossed in midfield from shit teams with no invention. The FACT we cant defend set pieces to save our lives. The FACT we could be starting the season weaker then we were last season. The FACT that without Arshavin (who wenger wasn’t sure about) saved us our champions league place.

These facts are nothing to do with the media – FACT

  118. Great post Yogi. I hope Vermaelen starts from day 1, I think he can be very good and he is on my fantasy team in the league! Also I am realluy hoping for a big year from Eduardo. He is top class and deserves a great run.
James, try saying something positive. What is it you like about this team? I’ve not heard that yet.

  119. James,

If the team is as flawed as you say, how bad are the teams who finish 5th or around 10th like the spuds?

  120. I’ve never seen Silvestre play a blinder. Has anyone?

  121. I’ve seen silvestre play the bag pipes, seriously, it was in Helsinki………..

  122. james

thanks for sticking up for me.not many people would do that for me. but i really appreciate your help indeed.and i dont blame you with your opinions cause i read the bible and it doesnt say let someone be judged.

  123. Alex, they are terrible and thats the way we are heading. You are happy with fourth and that is sad, like chrisgoona, he is also very very sad

  124. James in answer to your Facts (some of which I agree) I believe they are being resolved very well. Just not in the way most clubs would i.e. excessive signings. Our defensive frailties will be aided by the fact that certain players will be able to concentrate on the job in hand. While I dont think we have added much height i’m expecting Verm and Gallas to boss the defence more and have added aggression.

Who knows the reason why Wenger didn’t play Arshavin in the cup, not you I know that much.

A general progression throughout last season will see us improve this year. Added experience bulking up, and losing disruptive players. Add this to the return and retention of some of our great players you should be encouraged and proud of the team you supposedly support.

More to the point these points shouldn’t have to be shown to you as a fan would look for them and revel in them.

This isn’t a personal attack I actually like some of your bizzare comments but you cant ask people not to take aim at doubters on a fans site!

  125. riley8, thats ok dude, dont let the bullys win. They believe that supporting a club gives them the right to be arseholes, bullying people and putting them down. They have lost all perspective and have become something much worse then an unsupportive ‘fan’, they have become knobs.

One day they will see the light which we are shining down, and relax a little.

  126. Els, good post, you might get lynched for it though, watch your back dude. The hunt is on, and you’re the prey

  127. AAAAAARRGH

  128. Come on James agree with me a little. Wenger can adapt a team without signings.

  129. James, so you agree with Els saying that “you can’t ask people not to take aim at doubters on a fans site?”

Still waiting for what you do like about this squad…

  130. Els, when you just went AAAAAAARGH, I thought they had got you, I’m glad to hear that you’re ok.

Wenger is one of the best managers in the world, and is unbelievebly loyal to his players. He’ll stick with the same mediorcre players all the way, out of loyalty. He does not owe these players a living (I think you know the players I’m on about) he could move them on for a profit and bring in new players, some of whom are already sniffing around the squad. The dead wood must be thrown into the river and taken away and maybe fall down a waterfall depending on which river it was thrown into

  131. Gris Gris, I like Sgana and Clichy, best full bacls in the country. Fabregas one ofthe best players but the whole ‘is he going’ thin will go on for ever and has a very bad effect on the club and sometimes I think it’s be better if he just went. Arshavin will win player of the season this year.

  132. Oh shut up James. Do you really think anybody is interested in your monologue ?

  133. Muppet, stop bullying me you fool. I’m just stating my opinion. Please refer to my earlier post.

  134. James you have to way up the cost in these times.

I don’t think we have any ‘deadwood’, but to replace a player with somebody better than we have is firstly a risk as you can buy the best players and they can be crap at your club, Chelsea for example bought Schevchenko, Kezman, Mutu. Man U Veron…. the list goes on.
Secondly if Song, Diaby, Denilson were playing in Spain, Italy, Germany, France the big clubs would be hunting them and would be valued greatly.

To replace Song for ???Yaya Toure say looks so tempting but whats to say he’ll settle, gel and actually be that much better. He would cost £20m+ doubled wages. Even if he did come in and do a good job would he have loyalty to fend off a move to Real, Chelsea, Manchester Clubs… Don’t forget that these superstars can be nothing more than Mercenaries.

Nice healthy debate this though mate.

  135. “The FACT we could be starting the season weaker then we were last season.”

What about the fact we might not? Or the fact that we might win the premier league? Or the fact that you might be making very little sense on a very boring and long winded wind-up? Or the fact that your mother might be ashamed of you for your incompetence?

All good, speculative, possible, plausible facts. Now back in the corner with the hat on.

  136. When will we ever learn…..

  137. its official …….
bendtner will be double the player he was last year. he changed his shirt no 26 to 52

  138. Please tell me that’s not the real reason he changed his number?

  139. Loved your post at 12:06pm arsenehollis – that’s just how I feel, too!

Some supporters even think they have a moral duty to criticise, or hold Arsene Wenger to account, or whatever. Why? Makes no sense to me.

    *****

    Good post, YW
Fair and balanced analysis. A lot can be expected of this team this season.
And I agree with those tipping Ramsey to “do a Denilson”. From a boy to a man!

    ****
    @ Naga gunner

Hello. Still SHOUTING I see! :)

I think you underestimate what Denilson and Song bring to the table, but experienced cover in midfield would be welcome. Numerically, we are short, but in no other way.
Similarly, don’t underestimate Vermaelen. In pre-season he looked quick, composed and intelligent. Lovely distribution as well. Not enough information about his heading ability yet, but please don’t assume he is a poor header because he is 5′ 11″. It really doesn’t work that way – Eduardo’s one of our best headers!

    @ santino
Even though you’re being sarcastic, you could well be right.

  140. els
why ?? you dont like 2xbendtner

  141. arsenehollis, thats youre opinion and you’re entitled to it, all i’m saying is dont bully people like Riley8 for not kissing your arse, ok, COMPRENDE!!!

  142. James,

There’s a difference between bullying and helping somebody.

  143. santino, 2xBentdner = Iain Dowie

  144. My bad Consols, hope springs eternal.

  145. Muppet you fool, just help yourself, CAPPICHE!!

  146. The Barcelona media are really taking this latest spate of Cesc to Barca stories seriously. They say Arsenal have set a price on Cesc.

  147. Ole, Wasn’t it you who said theres no way Adebayor would be sold?

  148. james,

bendtner is best striker of his kind at his age .

  149. Fuck off James.

  150. Ole – i met an irish bloke in the pub the day of the rangers game, he swears blind that his brother-in-law is a good friend of our directors and that the word is cesc can be sold next summer. True story.

  151. santino, what kind is that?

  152. Arsene Wenger made me a star – I should never have left Arsenal, admits Alexander Hleb

  153. Ole, please don’t worry me.

“They say Arsenal have set a price on Cesc.”

I was having a really nice time until you said that.

  154. Alex fooking Hleb should fecking stop fraking moaning. Boring.

  155. james,

are you aware of the fact that there is a game called football ?

  156. Ole, did you or did you not say ‘Adebeyor wont be alowwed to leave’

Come on ole, tell the truth and shame the devil

  157. Santino, you justsaid Bendtner the best striker in the world of his kind, what kind do you mean? the shit kind?

  158. Keep on fucking off you nitwit Spud troll.

  159. James, so witty, insightful, worth reading. Keep up the good work.

Cesc wont go this summer. No one knows what will happen next year. Maybe we are defending league and european champions and nowhere else looks so good. Wouldn’t fret about that now though.

  160. james,
you are the best supporter of your kind .any guess what kind it is ?

  161. Ole, please answer the question, dont be a cowardly cowardly custard.

Did you or did you not say that Adebayor would not be sold?

My point is that if the right offer came in, Cesc maybe sold. Thats the truth.

  162. Arsenehollis, you just leave off from bullying the youngsters, ok, it aint cool and I dont want to have to tell you again.

  163. When cesc does leave it will be a blow, but we have people who can create chances now: arshavin, van persie, nasri, wilshere in time.

It is difficult to accommodate cesc and stay strong in centre-midfield, in a few years wilshere will need to be playing to. There may come a time when selling cesc wont hurt the team too much.

Doesn’t matter though, he is our captain and will be for a while.

  164. i dont know cesc is gonna sold or not. but in our new formation cescs importance is lower than the previous one.

  165. I never had you down as a coward ole, chris and arsenehoolis yes, but you always seemed pretty straight, even going against the doughnut brigade on here when you believed something they didnt

  166. If an Irish in a pub says so, it must be true.

  167. I’ve never understood an irishman in a pub.

  168. I tell you Pz, certain, ready for tomorrow’s Sun i think.

  169. Santino “els
why ?? you dont like 2xbendtner”

Erm Bendtner for me is making more of a target of himself to the nay-sayers. I liked his second half of last season but to be honest the jury is still out on him for me. We have seen what he can do, just hope he can be more consistant this season.

  170. I think we know cesc will go to barca one day but I really hope and think it wont be this season.

  171. I didn’t think Adebayor would be sold, I didn’t want him to be sold, but he’s been sold and I’ve moved on. There is no shame in not accurately forcasting what the club will do vis a vis the transfer market. I’m not the boss so anyone who thinks that they can predict exactly what will happen is either very much mistaken or someone with an inside line to the club. I didn’t think Toure would be sold, would have happily said “he can’t be sold/won’t be sold” and then been proved wrong. So what! I’m not Wenger, I have no idea what is going on at the club. I’m just happy to support the team and manager.

Matt (I think it was you), when was it your “source” said Villa would arrive? Case in point, and I’m not trying to beat up on you either. It’s just an example.

  172. What do people think of Cattermole???

  173. James you may be taken more seriously if you actually added some points to your claims , try constructing a sentence that says he is crap because………………..How can you expect to be taken seriously when you cant even express yourself correctly.

  174. Clatterhole? I don’t think of him at all.

  175. Anybody translate what Alan McInally had to say about Arsenal ?

  176. sign cattermole now

  177. Truegooner, If you cant understand what I’m saying dude then thou hast no fury like a women scorned.

Cattermole is not great, but better then Denilson, I dont give a catlemaine XXXX what the statistics say, Denilson is wank

  178. Cattermole is the wigan player humiliated by out youth cup team in the Carling Cup last season yes?

  179. Poliziano, Santino discuss???

I watched him play for Mbro early on and have to say liked his commitment. I dont think he’s an improvement on what we have however, strength in depth and all that.

  180. QoS yeah but you know everone has a dark day. So have we. He just looks like a battler.

  181. sorry Everyone that was meant to say

  182. James you have yet to justify that view on Denilson.

  183. A battler els, i’ll grant you. But not a very good player.

Essentially you want someone to win the ball and move it on to a team mate. Denilson does that very well.

  184. Nice post YW.

  185. That is what arsenal need, some good english spirit. Not very good with the ball, but hey, the heart will see him through. Just look at the national side and how well they did at the euro’s last summer, or the youth one this summer, played great footy.

That denilson doesn’t fly into tackles, commit himself early to go to ground nearly enough.

  186. i saw cattermole against the mancs last year at the jjb and he was impressive .its not improving but to add variety to our squad .

  187. and he is only 21.

  188. Denilson has many dark days, to a point when he was dropped by Wenger at the business end of the season. Now you can dress it all up with the ‘he was tired’ bollocks but that dont hold water. Do Lampard, Fabregas, Gerrard, Ronaldo get rested for the big games? Hell no. Denilson is average at best and wenger knows this. He’s a bit of a weakling for a DM, getting thrown around the pitch like a little bitch in alot of games. His positional play is terrible, he stands there ball watching, just like Forest Gump gawping his beloved Jenny. IMO.

  189. Cattermole is an old English name found principally in Norfolk. It means a person who lives in or around a dyke….by dyke I mean…sorry I didn’t mean to offend…..well er…oh I have fucked this up….

  190. usual for you

  191. Arsenehollis, you know what they say about sarcasm dont you? It’d make you as simple as Muppet show, Adweeb and S-pikey

  192. Thank you,santino

  193. Afternoon Frank,

Care to offer a prediction for top scorer at the club this season?

    I am going for Walcott.

  194. Robin Van Persie

  195. QoS I know what you mean however like Arsenehollis & Santino said it’s variety and I’m desperate for a player to do a bit of dirty work at the Emirates. It’s whats missing for me, when Petit, Vieira, Parlour started in that mould, there distribution wasn’t to hot. Under Wenger that just naturally improves. I’m hoping Arsene is sending Giles to have a skinny at Lee to see if he’s got the potential to pass as well as break stuff up.

  196. Can I have a go lads, I’m tipping Eduardo

  197. I see Franks logic.

Eduardo, will only play 5 games scoring 3 goals
Vela, Will only play 2 games scoring once
RVP, will play twenty games scoring 10-15 goals.
Bendtner, Will play every game scoring four goals.
Arshavin will play every game scoring 15-20 goals

Its between RVP or the saviour Arshavin

  198. I think Djourou will be our top scorer.

  199. the problem with cattermole is his price .if arsene want a player like him , he will find a clone from the oblivion for peanuts.

  200. i dont think djourou is that bad , yes he scored an own goal against chelsea but he will improve.

  201. James that is my point exactly you arent saying anything just making statements try actually backing them up with some actual info. Presumably you have gotten used to people viewing you as an smartarse well as far as I can see you are only qualified for part of the tag and its not the smart bit.

  202. That’s the spirit Polizano, i have refrained thus far, but maybe we can just come out and say that Djourou is the second coming of Lothar Matheus.

  203. No that is not my ‘logic’, as you call it.

My logic is as follows….with players like Eduardo, Arshavin, Cesc, Nic, Tomas, Samir, Theo getting into the box to get onto the end of an RvP,AA, Cesc and Romas and Samir assists, there will be plenty of penalties.

RVP is probably the best penalty taker in the world and so will score those penalties…so he has a 10 goal start.

RvP hit the woodwork more than any player in the league last season. Those efforts will go in this season becuase he is a perfectionist and will be working on those finishes.

RvP has the ability to score out of nothing.

Eduardo, AA and Nic will score hatfuls. But not as many as RvP

  204. James I havent seen anyone throw Denilson anywhere could you be more specific as to which game you saw this happen.

  205. My logic is as follows …. rvp is franks favourite player .

  206. I think Ramsey is a far better player than Cattermole and can add the “bite” to his game easier than Cattermole can learn how to pass the ball.

  207. I agree with QoS about Ramsey.

  208. RvP, AA, Nic, Cesc, Denilson, Song, Tomas, Nasri, Gibbs, Wilshere, Ramsay are my favourite players in no particular order. But actually playing for Arsenal pretty well automatically gets you on the list for me, santino. Why? Do you have a favourite player?

  209. i think arsharvin will be the top scorer this season. as i can see james is trying to wake everyone up by stating some important facts.but we all know our squad is still thin not prepared or strong enough for the EPL. but we all hope that wenger signs someone which i dont think if it might or might not happend.but we can dream and keep our hopes up but it all comes down to wenger to make those tough decision.

  210. qos,

you will also say vela is better than bendtner . he can bulk up in 2 years and become a target man for us . wont you ??

  211. You fucked up with the bible reference, riley8. I now think you are a simpleton.

  212. James also Denilson played in all but one premiership games last season so he was hardly dropped as you say, do you ever bother to check out facts or do just just spout off regardless, its a bit like a monkey with a machine gun. Cattermole is not in the same league as Denilson, if you really think that then you clearly are a halfwit

  213. santino,

Cattermole is not what we need in midfield. If we do add a player in central midfield it will be a more established and experienced player.

  214. Nice post as per usual YW!

    Keep up the good work

  215. Alex
i thought we already have experienced and established stars in our cm position.

  216. some people will only realize what they have lost when it’s gone….
Who knew about Sagna before he signed for us???
Vermalen might as well be another perfect signing for us. Keep the faith…

  217. Truegunner, You’re hiding behind bullshit dude. Denilson was bossed in many, many games last year, the Villa games for starters, Dont be a mug and say he wasnt dropped for the big CL games because you know he was. I always back up my answers but you choose not to read it. You hide dude

  218. Exactly cem. Who really knew about PV or TH? Who had heard of Gael, EDS or could honestly say they knew how good RVP would be? Trust in someone who has proven worthy of thy trust (Rily – that’ll be a real person I’m talking about.) and get behind your team.

  219. Regarding Cattermole I think QoS made a good point with Ramsey, I just think cattermole is a totally different option.

@ Truegooner I think comparing Denilson and Cattermole isn’t quite fair as one is an all-rounder (Denilson) the other is just a bit of an ugly (not physically) player that seems to do a good job.

@Alex Ideally I would love an experienced DM but I can’t see the prof doing that.

I only mentioned Cattermole as there seemed to be the right amount of gossip there to be a potential real target not to much not to little if you know what I mean.

    Cheers peeps gud discuss

  220. CEM spot on you could write a 20 name list of unheard of’s wenger got us.

  221. els,

Cattermole is a gaping arsehole and a thug to boot. His fight/battle/sprirt or whatever, amounts to a furious stack of breathless two-footed tackles. He’s an angry little chav who would probably injure more of our team in training than he’d manage to befriend.

  222. Excellent post from Untold Arsenal about Denilson and the DM role…

    http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/

  223. I think you will be surprised Els. In my opinion, AW has been looking for one experienced central midfielder for a while now and will get his man sooner rather than later.

  224. frank

watch your language cause i was just having an opinion that doesnt make me a satan or a negative person as you may call. but god will forgive you and thats all i am going to say till maybe other times amen.

  225. James I’m sure yor are English that’s why you prefer Cattermole to Denilson !
What makes people think that English players have more heart??????????
These players from South America are dependant on Football. They know that Football is their only way out of a lousy life. They have more to lose if they fail than an English player. I’m not a fan of Brazil, but they are 5 times World Champions!

Lescott £22m and Toure £15m….. English players are overrated and expensive

  226. Denilson was f*cking great last season, what is it with some of the supporters on here.

Jesus, even cold hard facts don’t cut through the mustard for some people.

  227. i dont think many “unheard of’s ” made a sudden impact for the first team . and tv is not an unheard of’s for that matter .he was ajax captain .
and sagna played for 3 years for Auxerre a respectable french club, and edurado was the star player for his country and his club before we brought. these players may be “unheard of’s ” for people who only follow their own league .

  228. Nasir Jones-Nasri

That’s some funny stuff reading James talk about bullying people.

Don’t like the taste of your own medicine, you idiot?

WTF makes you think you can freely spew your disgusting opinion made of pure feces at our glorious club on a daily basis?

You’re nothing but a whining juvenile who cries when Arsene doesn’t sign 5 players every window.

  229. Alex I hope your right matey

  230. santino,

I can bet you did’nt know Sagna or Eduardo before we were linked to them. Its easy to act all knowing now.

  231. how can you make a stupid bet like that ? what do you know about me i may be his agent

  232. Thanks Axis.

The point about Denilson is that he will improve his physical strength. He is not a lightweight and I’m sure he will be working in the gym.

It’s hard to put a quantitative figure on his improvement, but if he does up his game by 20% then he will become very formidable indeed. What a lot of the doomers do not see is that his first touch and ball retention is excellent. Exactly the attributes you need to play in the defensive midfield role.

  233. James whats with all the dude stuff , do you think you are a turtle?

  234. CEM since when ws toure english? Also you people, dont all tie us with the same brush.

I liked cattermole for his fighting spirit but limpar may be right, just a thug with no finesse, I do think we need somebody who can scrap though, for the stoke, blackburn games.

Santino Wenger has plucked ‘Obscure’ players from leagues and made stars for years.

  235. I wonder whether half of the people on here have played football before… you don’t go 21 games unbeaten & put it down to good luck. That is an amazing accomplishment, especially for the likes of a young side at this level. Denilson played an integral part in that run of unbeaten games, and he still gets flack. FFS. Unbelievable.

  236. James maybe the reason we lost the CL against the mancs was because Denilson wasnt playing

  237. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8192417.stm

Good read not for the correspondent’s opinions but for AW’s quotes.

  238. Eduardo is my favorite player currently on the squad. Mostly because he seems like a really nice bloke who has had bad luck. Oh wait, he’s an absolute terror in the box who scores for fun AND style and will slaughter the opposition. He also worked very hard to regain fitness, never complanied, is happy to be there, and says all the right things in interviews. What’s not to love.

After Eduardo I think the rest of the squad are my favorite players.

  239. Santino Sagna or Eduardo is actually two players if you were his agent you would have known that.

  240. els
my point was none of the obscure players didnt make a sudden impact . and you cant call players like tv, sagna and edurado unheard of . if ajax signs players like rooney gerrard and walcott ,many of their fans may not have a clue about those , but that doesnt make them unheard of .

  241. rev I am a proper Arsenal fan and while I havn’t slagged Denilson I did hint he wasn’t the finished article yet, I do think our whole crop could do with a Vieira to shadow. I don’t want to be included in your rant please.

  242. els you didn’t understand my point mate…

Toure is not English I know, but what I tried to say is that I don’t think Lescott is £7m better than Toure…
The English love to hype their players. Now it’s Wilshere. Leave the boy alone for God’s sake and let him mature without too much pressure..

  243. @Muppet

Another thing…people talk about how Denilson sometimes ballwatches, etc. Wengers defensive scheme is all about channeling the attack into “dead ends” where to cutting ability of the opponent is dulled. Notice our defenders and midfielders very rarely go directly into the attack at the players feet. Instead our players sheild them from the passing lanes either forcing them into the touch line, or guiding them into the cutback lanes where the help is waiting. Sagna and Clichy are AWESOME at this…guiding forwards into useless parts of the pitch while defending the escape routes.

The reason this is important is that Denilson is supposed to be ballwatching…he’s the help. You see Nasri and all the others not attacking the dribbling forward but instead shadowing; waiting for the pass attempt but otherwise happy to let him dribble down the cul-de-sac. The reason is that Denilson is there waiting. He’s the one who gets the interceptions…desperation passes.

Watch us versus the opponent in transition. The forwards press from the sides forcing the opponent defenders out of their defensive third, forcing their play into the midfield where Denilson and company have already set the channels. Running about trying to get the ball defeats the purpose and actually results in letting them cut you apart.

Denilson looks like he’s ballwatching when the forwards have moved into the channel opposite the one he’s set. The reason he’s not to go running after the posession is because in the change of posession he is the outlet man…the link between the change of posession and our defense and our forwards and most often a forward streaming midfield. It is essential that he stay where he is in order to perform that function and to be the safety-net for the midfileds who abadonned their defensive responsibilities.

  244. God, do we still have this pile of spud puke, Fuck off James.

  245. Santino, you mentioned those players… hoe about Toure, Anelka, Clichy, Adebayor, Senderos all from lowly teams or squad players that he spots potential in. Players may be at a team like Barca but had you heard of cesc? No neither had Barca thats why they let us have him. Who can argue with that.

  246. cem sorry fellah i get what your saying.

  247. Terrific interview with DB10 ahead of tonights game.

    http://netherlands.worldcupblog.org/

  248. Bergkamp what a guy

  249. I don’t know how old some of you guys are but I suspect not very. I want to stick up for james he’s talking sense. The rest of you – don’t confuse being unhappy at winning no trophy for four seasons and the lack of investment in the team with not getting behind your club.cheer don’t boo at the games but feel free to let off steam here. I am frustrated that wenger has the makings of a great team but someone or something (whether its wenger or the board or a lack of nous doing the transfers (missing dein perhaps?)is stopping us forking out for the two or three quality players we need. I like yw’s comments except about denilson. I don’t care about the “stats” the guy’s second rate and I’d put him behind just about every other CM in the chelsea man u and scouser squads, yes including john oshea. He doesn’t give away possession much but he is a relentless mine of mediocrity, slow square and nothing balls that very rarely hurt the opposition. Yes he did one or two good things last season but so would you or I if we had that many games. And I’m surprised the board don’t get more stick. Banking a profit on transfers for four years in a row winning nothing and still the most expensive season tickets in the country! Cough up you old bastards!

  250. els

3rd time i have to repeat the term sudden impact .
all the players you mentioned above took years to make it.

  251. ‘God, do we still have this pile of spud puke, Fuck off James.’

Ole Gunner, Did you, or did you not, say that Adebayor would definitley not be sold this summer? This is the third time I’ve asked this question, stop hiding behind bullshit like true gunner and answer the god damn question, I will not ask you again

  252. @axis

    Fooking great post. Top class.

I believe that we are always a bit more vulnerable without Denilson on the pitch. Our shape becomes more ragged.

  253. i think many of the blogers are confused a bit. they say our central midfield is good enoug to challenge for the title and we have depth there ,and also make comments about wenger is trying to find a more established cm. if we already have what it takes then why modify it ? and who is gonna make way for this established cm ? cesc ? we might have to bring xavi to do that . denilson ?? we might have to bring jesus christ there.

  254. The only response to a shitspraying spud on an Arsenal fan blog talking shits is FUCKK OFF JAMES.

  255. TY muppet

  256. Cheers Frank, that was a good read. Good to hear his thoughts.

My mate say him in Waitrose last year and got some pictures on his phone. Although only from afar as he couldn’t physically summon any words at the time, despite usually not being able to shut up.

Apparently Dennis even shopped with a certain lightness of touch that shortened the breath of the other shoppers.

At one point he swivelled on the ball of his right foot so adroitly – sweeping across the aisle from the brylcreem shelf to the Matey bubblebath – that one shelf-stacker gasped and clutched her hands together in anticipation as he dropped the shoulder. But he just smiled and swept on through the store, bestowing mysterious glowing benelovence on all he met.

So I think he lives near me.

  257. sorry cem I hadn’t brought up immediate impact myself that wasn’t my debate with you. I have lost track of what we were going on about. What was your original issue with the statement???

  258. chinaman,

See, now that was at least a calm post. I must strongly disagree with your assertions about Denilson, however. I’m sure you are an expert football watcher and maybe even fit but to suggest even as a joke that you are capable of something decent on the pitch given a run of games is laughable. Furthermore, to suggest that your perception, rather than stats, tell the story of Denilson is quite ridiculous. I’ll grant you your opinion, however it is formed, but I think it is a mistake to try and have a go at someone just because you perceive him to be poor and choose to ignore the objectivity presented by statistics.

Your comments about the board are interesting. I agree, it would be fascinating to know what goes on there and why things are done the way they are.

Also, if you’re looking for a blog to “let off steam” and slag players and the team this is definitely not the place.

  259. Dont get me wrong, Denilson is an ok footballer and would do well at Sunderland or even Villa. He is the best of the three stooges. Compared to Stooge Eboue, Denilson is fricken Gattuso.

Stooge Diaby needs to have his legs surgically shortened so that he can run without them buckling underneath him and causing him injury after injury. Diaby would do well at Hull or Stoke or as a mobile human lamp post

  260. axis, second muppet. top class post, very interesting to think about.

  261. Cheers Frank, that was a good read. Good to hear his thoughts.

    Funny stuff Limpar haha

  262. axis, thats bullshit, Densilon ballwatches when a player runs past him, he doesnt track back and his positional play is terrible, smart midfeilders leave him for dead looking like a gormless twat whos only friend in the world is wenger and the other stooges, we all saw this last season so dont deny it, dude.

    I’m a big turtle dude.

  263. Lovely stuff Limpar…ty Gris.

  264. I’ve posted this before, but as it’s current, I’ll post again.

Bergkamp popped into the David Lloyd tennis centre in Enfield to pick up his son. Whilst he was waiting he picked up a tennis ball and starting juggling it. The tennis coaches stood there open mouthed while he, without dropping ball, juggling it to perfection, head, shoulders, balancing the ball on the back of his head etc etc…

  265. Axis,

I think part of the reason denilson gets a rough time of it is that Arsenal have been spoilt in that position in recent years.

Petit and Viera were so eye-catching that anyone since has come up short. Viera was all-conquering. Petit, glorious and swashbuckling. They really did do everything, win the ball and use it spectacularly too.

LRV on Untold made a good point about the underappreciation of Gilberto. Even when he was our most effective player, the grafter, undroppable – I had fellow gooners telling me how they couldn’t understand why is was in the team.

Denilson is similarly unspectacular. But IMO he will be vital this season. You’ve outlined why…

He has the ability to be a much more rounded player than Gilberto.

  266. @ limparassist

    loool

    *****

    @ Santino

The extra defensive midfielder would be for cover and competition. You may have noticed that we have had a lot of injuries and we have only two recognised players for that position, both of whom will probably play most weeks in the 4-2-3-1 formation. One of them will be off to the ACN for several weeks. So that’s why some of us think we need cover – there’s no obvious backup. Competition for places is also good because any player can improve, and competition keeps them on their toes. Similarly, you can never say that 21/22-year-old guys have nothing to learn, which is why I would like a new guy to be experienced.

    ****
    @ James

So what if Ole Gunner said Adebayor would not be sold? It means he didn’t want AW to sell him, and he wasn’t alone in that wish. How is Ole’s prediction relevant to whether or not Cesc will be sold? It doesn’t prove or show anything except Ole’s preference. In both cases, the decision is/would be Wenger’s.

  267. uker12, weel then it looks like fourth place again, might be more of a fight this year though but the boys can do it, we well just seak fourth if Arshavin doesnt get injured, just.

  268. santino,

I am one of those who say we need not an established, I hate the word, but an experienced midfielder close to his physical peak.

Who will make way? The best players who fit the manager’s plan will play. Simple as that.

  269. Fungunner, you missed an earlier post where he was banging on saying how Cesc will never be sold, so I was just reminding him that things sometimes happen that shocks us and he wouldnt except it. You have balls Fungunner, I like balls

  270. exciting game between russia and argentina

  271. James,

Do you enjoy posting here more than posting as Jimbo on LG ?

  272. Uker 12 what’s said I can’t listen???

Ole, Santino, I would like an experienced DM but one like vieira would come in impart wisdom play crunch matches and then go into coaching here where he belongs. Maybe 2 seasons down the line we may be able to retain Song, Denilson, Diaby, Ramsey and they would all be better for it.

  273. Muppet, dude, I’ve never posted on LG, do I seem the type to mix my words? Trust me dude i’m a big turtle and id tell you

  274. @ James

you missed an earlier post where he was banging on saying how Cesc will never be sold

The same thing applies – Ole’s predictions and wishes are neither here nor there in respect of whether AW will sell Cesc or not. Going on and on about him being wrong before is just you trying to score some petty point about who was right, which nobody else cares about.

Right, I am now putting my bag of peanuts away.
    I MNFTT. I MNFTT. I MNFTT…

  275. Fungunner you’re feeding the troll by responding to it, on my behalf.

I have nothing to say to him.

  276. anyone else wondered why James and Jimbo (or the real Jimbo) never post at the same time). I hate to say this as I’ve been accused of multiple identies too, but their writing is similar. Talking about dark sides, is Jim the dark side of Jimbo?

  277. You are a big something James – I’m not sure about turtle.

  278. eels
Same as he usually says: young squad will improve (by 30%), if he finds better players than the ones we have already he will buy them and at the moment he hasn’t found any, Arsenal can win the league with this squad without any additions.

I love Arsene and think he is a great manager but their is no way this squad can win the league with the problems in defence and lack of useful experience. However I don’t think there is any worry about dropping out of the top four as city will take half a season to gel.
Whats the old joke about the definition of insanity-doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Oh well can’t wait for Saturday.

  279. Gris Gris,

My favourite player is Cesc. Maybe RVP. Maybe Gael. Then there’s Eduardo. Can I forget Vela. What about that Nasri. Diaby’s fucking good too. Sagna is tops. I came to respect Denilson.

    I have a lot of favourites. I’m like a 5 year old.

Least favourite: Silvestre (because he’s crap, and a crap manc), Gallas (I still hold his Chelsea roots against him but I like him as a player.

  280. cheers uker

  281. lagooner,

pen names don’t matter. I judge people by how much crap they spout, and James has a 100Horsepower crapspray in his throat.

  282. No problem, glad to help

  283. @ uker12

    lack of useful experience.

Eh? They’ve been playing in the EPL…

    ****

    @ Ole Gunner

I’m responding on my own behalf. That illogical “point” has been made by a few people and I wanted to scotch it.

  284. FunGunner
What I mean by useful experience is players who will calm things (eg against Spurs last season) or who keep us going when things are bad (Chelsea at home) or tell people where to position on the pitch eg at set-pieces, to stop counter attacks etc. Basically players on the pitch who will tell others what to do. People like Gallas are not communicative enough and Van Persie, Fabergas can’t seem to do it either.

  285. Ole,

“Gallas (I still hold his Chelsea roots against him but I like him as a player”

I think after three seasons we can now say he’s a proper gooner. For me he is our most passionate player. And one of our cleverest too.

Like Laurent Blanc, he’s totally economical with his movement and the amount of fires he puts out before they’ve even started with his positioning is incredible. He’s invaluable as a model centreback for Djourou et al to learn from.

If Djourou does become a great centreback, he’ll owe a lot to Gallas.

Remember, Willie Gallas is our mate, is our mate, is our mate!

Here he is whipping up a storm

Incidentally, my favourite players, now Kolo’s gone, are; Gael, Andrey, Rosicky, Ramsey, Vela and Nasri.

  286. @ uker12

I see… I think lessons have been learned there. They always bring up the Spurs (I nearly said “loss”, because that’s what it felt like!) draw as the most painful game to let slip. RvP was saying last month that there was no way they should have lost the FA Cup semifinal having gone a goal up. Unlike you, I believe RVP at least is one player who will take that sort of responsibility this season. And he’s not exactly backward in coming forward with his opinion, is he?

  287. And Denilson

  288. i think james is using the wrong words for expressing his opnion. he should have said..

we need more competiton in cm ,adding some experienced estableshed player would be nice. (instead he said denilson is shit replace him )

  289. @ LimparAssist

    I love Gael, too!

  290. looks like clattermole has gone to the Black Cats, que the whinging about how Wenger sits on his hands and watches all the favourite transfer targets of the all-knowing fan-base disappear.

  291. FunGunner
I hope he (RVP) steps up to it too and I can see what you mean, can’t imagine him being quiet in the dressing room. I still think it would help to have that in the midfield (and defense?) maybe as well because no matter where anybody stands on the Danilson/song debate I don’t think anyone can see them doing it.
Also I mostly agree on that Spurs game (still hurts to think about) that they won’t be that navie again (hopefully).

  292. FunGunner,

Yeah, he is a proper professional. You can see he abosultey loves playing for us. You can see he appreciates how lucky is he to be a professional footballer, and he’s determined to be the best left back in the world. He’s humble and proud at the same time.

He’s mentioned before that the rest of his family are in the French army and if he didn’t have football that’s where he’d be. There is something very soldierly about the way he goes about his job.

If only the England team were more like Gael.

  293. It makes you laugh really Gris Gris. If these idiots had the players they wanted we’d have the likes of Villa and Messi playing alongside Cattermole.

How fast would he have to run to keep up with their thinking?

And he still wouldnt get a touch.

  294. Excellent, Limpar @ 4.53

  295. uker12

Funny you should mention Song, because I can imagine him doing it – he drives his Cameroonian teammates and he also took the game by the scruff of the neck in the CC fixture agaisnt Blackburn in the 07/08 season. OK, it was two seasons ago, but that performance, combined with his international persona, suggests strongly to me that he can be a vocal as well as a physical presence. And remember that he will have gained a lot of confidence from AW’s reliance on him in the second half of last season.

  296. LOL Consols, great mental picture.

  297. That Spurs game,

When RVP did his little inside of left foot back heel, winked at some prat like Hutton and said Ole like a matador, part of me wanted to kiss him, the other part wanted to slap him round the face – don’t taunt the sea! What a ridiculous wind-up showboat that was…

Don’t get me wrong, I love it when we start playing samba football, playing for more goals when anyone else would be running it into the corners – I bloody love that. It makes me radiate light. It sets us apart from the rest of the football world.

But that night, it cost us.

  298. FunGunner
Hopefully you’re right as I think Song has a good future here as he has been very impressive since the middle of last season if he could add that to his game it would make him an even better player.

  299. Good to see Red Action trying to do something about the atmosphere and support at the stadium

    http://www.onlinegooner.com/exclusive/index.php?id=1268

  300. @ uker12

See? Things are not as bad as you think, are they? Bet you’re smiling now! :)

    ****

    @ Limpar Assist

It did cost us that night. But this season, RVP will be able to do that again, and yet the team will react in the right way if the Sp*ds or anyone else look like they’re staging a comeback. We will have the style and the nous.

  301. @ Passenal

Those all sound like great ideas and could be very positive changes. Well done REDaction and IG.

  302. FunGunner
I don’t think I’m as bad as some of the people wailing that the sky is falling but I still have doubts we can complete for the league and some complaints about the problems that I think can be fixed but I still shout and cheer the infrequent times I times I get to the stadium and I am a bag of nerves for the 90 mins we are playing when I’m not and can’t wait til Saturday. The one time I get as illogical as the crazy Wenger out section is when it comes to our failings at set-pieces, that drives me insane.

  303. Passenal

Thats great, hopefully those improvements will help the atmosphere at the Stadium. The more I hear about Gazidis the more impressed I become.
This also might be of interest:
    http://www.marketingweek.co.uk/arsenal- … 47.article

It mentions he is considering a renegotiation some of our commerical deals which is good news.

  304. @ Passenal.

My opinion of Ivan just rocketed. Great ideas from REDAction too. Time to start decorating!

Anyone have a list of players that made the mural?

  305. @ uker12

I just assume that any problems are being worked on in training, and at some point, the training will eradicate the problem.
Bear in mind that our weaknesses can be exaggerated – set pieces are a good example, because I believe someone (jbh?) recently posted the stats for goals conceded from set pieces. And we had conceded fewer than most. So whatever it looks like to you, what they are doing must be working!

  306. Thank God the time for talk is nearly over, and the time for action is about to begin – just in time to save the sanity of some, just too late for others.

  307. FunGunner
Ya I saw those stats sometime like we conceded the fewest headed goals or something but it not even when just when we concede from them just the usual general panic in the box to hoof the ball clear maybe its the same way for other teams and I’m just more sensitive to it as I’m an Arsenal fan. Hopefully with Vermanlen (Sp?) this will be less of a problem. I live in hope (as does my TV remote).

  308. Far too late for all too many….

  309. Well done, RedAction, you are all super stars. Well spotted, Passenal.

  310. Lovely to hear the pundits at the Scotland match bemoaning Caldwell’s sending off for two red cards.

He only nearly pulled the shirt offf the Norwegian forward 90 seconds after scything another one down.

Do they understand the notion of cheating at all? Incidentally, the co commentator signs like that plank Burley who was so awful on Setanta last year. If it is, it just goes to show that a good man is never out of a job for long.

    Not.

  311. Hangeland’s been pretty awful, incidentally.

  312. @ Limpar, I think you’re likely correct. Also, I’m not even sure that Denilson can be said to play the same role in the defensive scheme as those greats, who played a much more typical enforcer role.

    @ James.

Thanks for the careful and reasoned response to my post. Your analysis and insight have set me right.

Did you not say just a few hours ago:

“Can everyone please let everyone else have there opinion without being rude to them.”

I believe you just played yourself. I have never made a nasty comment to you, because I actually supported your right to a different opinion. You may now kiss off.

  313. Limpar Asssist 5.47

Yes thats the same Gallas who cried like a baby and sat down in the centre circle at Birmingham. And the Gallas who slagged off his team mates.Great leader my arse

  314. I am very pleased for RedAction. These youngsters have never given up and are constantly looking to improve the matchday experience. It is really heart-warming to know that there are great supporters out there. It is great that they now have IG’s ear.

The Clock is going back to the Clock End…and I will be in the West Stand again. We are on the march…maybe we can be great supporters after all. Let’s give it a go.

Keep it going RedAction. We are with you all the way.

    …..Arsenal….

  315. Axis, You’ve got it all wrong dude, I may have been harsh in my post but I never told you to leave the site or called you retarded like some of the big ‘men’ do to what are obviously young kids on here. By all means argue in a heated manner with swear words for effect but dont attack someones personality because you dont like what they say, and definitely dont tell them to F**k off a site which is made open to the public. I’m sorry if it sounded harsh but I meant it, I thought you was talking bullshit dude, but thats only my opinion ad thats football dude, Boom shack attack!!!

  316. Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaaa all….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…..Arsenal….ARSENAL….clickclickclick

  318. California Gooner

Cesc for sale? It ain’t going to happen. It is simply a propaganda mood to keep the Barca fans happy by showing that they are making an effort. Selling Cesc now would simply be throwing in the towel on the youth experiment, and Wenger isn’t ready to do that.

Regarding Hleb, an Italian friend once told me about a comedian who defined stupid people as those who “hurt themselves while hurting others.” Isn’t that just what he did? I agree with LA Gooner’s recent posts that Hleb was key in our transition from defense to offense, allowing Cesc and Flamini to defend but then get forward. In leaving he really hurt the squad and of course screwed himself as well. But now we have Wilshire… with Rosicky hurt, I can see him stepping up.

Finally, if you hate Mourinho as much as I do and want to feel self-satisfied, check out The Independent. There is an article about how he offended the Chinese during Inter’s recent tour there.

  319. Fuck off, James

  320. Fair enough James…call it quashed.

  321. We need some sheep who can chant

    Wenger good
    Doomers bad

    whenever doomers appear.

  322. California Gooner

Tony, the Gallas who cried in the center circle was the same guy who took a bunch of youth following TH14′s departure and instilled the belief and fight to make a credible title challenge. People only remember the negatives, but one reason we were in first place for much of that year was a one for all, all for one spirit that Gallas had cultivated from even before the first game.

  323. Try to use the word ‘attack’ if you can, California Gooner, so as to not cause…er…well..thingy..

  324. California Gooner

    Got it, Frank. Wrong dialect.

  325. Tony,

I haven’t said Gallas was any good as a leader. Let alone great.

I’ve said he’s the most passionate player we have. Epitomised by him sketching out in Birmingham.

And if your arse is such a great leader I’d like to see it react to your mate’s leg being snapped in two.

    In fact, no i wouldn’t.

I remember my mate at school had his leg broke, his dad was holding his calf in his hand and the lower half of his leg just sort of flopped up and down on a hinge in his shin.

Noone was exactly bang on it after that.

  326. What a lovely story.

  327. Thats OK, california Gooner. Perhaps we could use ‘assault’ instead.

  328. Are we all going to relate our best broken leg stories now then? I have got quite a few.

  329. Cali Gooner,

Glad to see that Moaniniho is making friends as usual. Do you have a link to that Independent Story ?

  330. Hi Frank, I hope everythings going well in your life, not really

  331. Thank you, James. Not really.

  332. James,

Apart from demonstrating that you are a world class jerk off, is there any point to any of your posts ?

  333. I had my leg broken by Diaby, I was playing football and he was having a kick about on the other pitch. He went in for a sliding tackle and the lanky bastards leg took me out from fifty feet away. He is dangerous and No-No-No-Notorious

  334. Muppet, read between the lines dude, I’m of a higher interlect and im not gonna feel bad about it, ok?

  335. Oh dear oh dear oh dear

  336. For those who haven’t heard, I was coming home from work this evening, and on Talk Shite, the commentator of the Norway Scotland game, said that the norwegian press will be running a story tomorrow that Bredge Hangeland will be signing for us by Saturday.

  337. Consolsbob,

did you follow the Scotland/Norway match through the BBC? Apparently the commentator said that Hangeland will join Arsenal this week before the Everton match? Can you confirm?

Speaking of defenders did anybody watch the match between the Czechs and the Belgians? Belgium lost 3-1. Vermaelen played almost the entire match.

  338. I thought you bunch of plonkers didnt beleive any of the press?

  339. On the BBC TV coverage they said that some in Norway were reporting that Hangeland would join us by the weekend.

I thought he was doing well in the first half. But now Scotland are down to ten men and are 3-0 down the Norwegian defenders have not got too much to do.

  340. I don’t belive the press. Someone asked if it had been mentioned on the BBC. And it has.

  341. Are you a bit of a half-wit, James?

  342. You shouldnt believe everything you read in the press frank.

Notlager, make me a cup of tea will you? and hurry up

  343. Muppet, you’re too quick.
    Frank thank you.

    Is the match still on?

  344. Aah, deliberate misinterpretation. I see you are a user too, James.

  345. Frank

Tell me more, is the clock coming back, Iv’e got goose bumps here.

  346. Notlager, make frank one as well, hurry up.

  349. Yes, London. RedAction have met with Ivan Gazidis and he has promised a number of changes (look for the link provided by Passenal above @ 6.14). Arsenal have agreed that the Clock will be put back up, but it will have to wait until next summer’s close season becuase it needs scaffolding. They have also agreed to reintroduce the stand names, amongst some other superb stuff. I am overjoyed.

  350. No, sorry notlager. I was deboning a neck of lamb while ‘watching’, so I missed bits. Plus I really do not listen to much of what they prattle on about.

Hansen muttered something at half time which might have been apposite but as he was pissed off that Scotland are absolutely shafted, he was even more garbled than he normally is.

Noit the best match to judge Hangeland on but he has not been particularly effective, altho’ the Scots haven’t scored have they?!!

  351. I can’t find the starting lineups for internationals on the few websites I’ve checked. Can anyone let me know which Arsenal internationals did not start the friendly matches today? I know about Walcott and it looks like Gael did not start the France match.

    Cheers

Muppet, here it is. Mind you, had Mourinho angered the Chinese by talking about Tibet, I might have become a fan. But it seems he angered them just by being his usual cuntish self.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/mourinho-angers-china-during-preseason-tour-1770862.html

  354. Wahay!!!!, welcome Adweeb, love the jokes!!!!

  355. Welcome back mate. Where have you been? How’s the finger injury!?

  356. Alex, its still stuck up there, he’s been to hell and back

  357. You’ve been fed well, James.

  358. James,

I came across a blog called crab football which looked like something you would have authored.

  359. Yes, I’ve had some very insightfull, interlectual discussions today, my belly is full.

Adweeb i’m not joking I seriously love your jokes, the sarcasm thing, its genius, its never been done before and it makes me laugh so hard I almost piss my pants

  360. Amen to all that REDaction. Fills me with glorious visions of the future.

    Right them, come on RVP.

  361. That is the best news I have heard all summer, tears are running down my face joy, it was so obviously necessary, I can hardly believe it is going to happen.

We’re the clockend, we’re the clockend we’re the clockend New Highbury ;)

  362. Alex, whenever you address me, I get a mental picture of Columbo doing some investigating in my head.

    Just one more thing………….

  363. James, considering that you refer to Liutenant Columbo, are you admitting that you are the author!?

  364. Thanks notlager

  365. Why not piss in your pants James ? Plus ca change.

  366. California Gooner

BTW, did RVP really say this? : “No one would have said a few years ago that a black man could be US President. No one thinks that Arsenal, with our budget, can win trophies.”

    Yes we can.

  367. California Gooner

Apparently my comment might be moderated. So here is a cleaner version:

Muppet, here it is. Mind you, had Mourinho angered the Chinese by talking about Tibet, I might have become a fan. But it seems he angered them just by being his usual arrogant self.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/mourinho-angers-china-during-preseason-tour-1770862.html

  368. Cheers Cali Gooner, will take a look.

  369. No finger injury, was on vacations. How are the trolls reacting to ‘no transfers’, and seeing Eboue and probably Sendros playing the coming season?

I see James, has been compromised, with that news. Cheer up James, and stop pissing your pants, you already have alot of other issues.

  370. I doubt Senderos will play any part for us, unless he signs for Everton before Saturday and decides to do us a favour or 2.

  371. Mourinho’s arrogance is surprising given his humble route to the top. Great men never forget their roots.

  372. Looks like Rio Ferdinand has been smapling the delights of Amsterdam Coffee Shops, Nyshe!

  373. Ateeb, needless to say a whole lot of posts damning the players, manager and club came up here. Still better than the mass suicides witnessed on some other blogs.

  374. VP..almost scored… Majestic… Kuyt just scored

  375. ha ha ha ha ha ha…… 2-0… can’t wait to hear the views of the hacks on the sunday supplement…. who so so overate the england team….

  376. England are getting culled..

  377. That is one good reason why we didn’t buy Barry.

  378. England haven’t got a chance in hell of winning the world cup.

  379. Yep Ateeb.. if Denilson gave the ball away like that in front of goal, he would be slaughtered and we would never hear the end of it.

  380. Wayne Barndoor just missed a clear chance. It’s going to be fun watching Man U struggle to score this season.

  381. England are supposed to be 2-0 up arn’t they ???….. soooo many world class players in their team

  382. Wenger needs to sign Gareth Barry and Rio Ferdinand.

  383. Well, at least none of the feckers can give Theo any shit this time.

  384. Wayne Barndoor claimed he will try scoring 25 goals. In how many seasons, is anyones bet.

Great post today Yogi. It seems you prefer Song over Denilson for that DM position?

  385. Denilson is not fit technically to play in that position for the Arsenal despite all his great stats.

His passing stats don’t tell us that he’s better because he passes within 4/5 yards.

His stats are also silent that he’s bullied.

Again stats hide the fact that he ball-watches as opponents pass by.

We see him play all that time and he’s not good enough.

When Fabregas got hurt last season we lost all our creativity and played at times like Bolton because the ‘great’ Denilson lacked the technicality to create.

He can’t survive at the Arsenal in 1/2 years time because Ramsey, Diaby, Wilshere, Merida, Coquelin, Frimpong, lansbury are all technically ahead of him.

The great Denilson is the next Senderos in a year or two.

  386. Truly AFC,

Go and dig a big hole and jump in.

  387. Defensively, Song is better. Offensively, he’s not good enough.

I can’t see him doing better offensively than Ramsey and Jack in two years time.

Defensively, Coquelin and Frimpong will be better than him within the same time period. So where will he stand? Back to Brazil of course.

  388. Truly AFC,

Do you have a template for your posts? I’ve seen your last post recycled about a million times on here already.

  389. If we get hangerlaand that will give us 4 defenders all fighting for games with he and djourou very good in the air.

Defence could really be a strong area for us this year, if that happens everyone else better watch out. Exciting times indeed.

Maybe we will play different combinations home and away, with djourou hangerland away and gallas vermaalen at home? You never know.

James you are a tosser and a waste of time.

  390. Trulyafc;

You know, there are ways to9 say you prefer one player over another without having to completely slate and abuse the one you are not so fond of!

    Just a tip for ya.

  391. Wait, truly AFC. You slate Denilson for not being a DM and then slate him again for not being a creative midfielder. I wish you would make up your mind.

  392. Have to say, that was some finish by Defoe.

  393. Eduardo scores against Belarus. Belarus 0 – Croatia 2.

  394. Hehe Gris Gris…it’s the joy of slating that matters to Truly – or better yet – Falsely AFC.

    What happened to England?

  395. That’s great news about Eduardo Alex – we need our hitman firing on all cylinders.

Notlager did you see the Czech/Belgium game? How did Thomas play? I know Belgium have a very young team.

  396. arsenehollis, just dont ever bully the young kids on here again, ok?, I dont want to have to speak to you about this matter again, comprende?

England are making the comeback, billy billy bosh oh my gosh

  397. Muppet as usual the press are polishing a turd with England telling us how great this golden generation is. I think there time will come but sadly better teams ahead of them at the moment (At least 10 I can think of) that could win the world cup.I am happy to be proven wrong.

Has anyone thought that Hangerland could turn out to be a one season wonder?

The sooner this new season starts the better. All the what if, could haves are starting to become tiresome. Lets start by spanking the Tofees in their own back yard. Come on the Arsenal.Football, Footbal, Football!

  398. Spike

I’m neither slating nor abusing Denilson. I like him because he’s an Arsenal player.

He’s been hyped here a lot meanwhile he’s an average player not good enough to sustain a regular position in the team in the near future.

Its a fact that Denilson is a good player who can look great at Everton, Villa, Spurs, Fulham etc but for Arsenal? I doubt.

  399. Gooner4life

One season wonder? What like Greedybarndoor

  400. G4Life,

Well, I don’t know about Hangeland to be honest.

All I do know is that he would have been analysed. Perhaps Wenger is interested in him for very physical premiership games, but the main pair will still be Gallas/Vermaelen.

  401. TrulyAFC;

Well, for someone not slating a player, it sure as shit looks like it!

Capello is a genius! England are sure to win the WC now!

  402. TrulyAFC,

I wouldn’t say he’s been hyped, just defended against doomers who have decided they don’t like him for some reason.

Someone made the point yesterday, apologies I don’t remember who, that this Arsenal squad is 90% people who are improving leaps and bounds every year and not people who have plateaued in their careers. What other PL team can say the same? If Denilson improves this year as much as he did last year he will end the term as a superman capable of turning back time by flying around the world in the opposite direction.

Call it what you will, I will trust Wenger to have a better judgement of who can be a great player for The Arsenal than you.

  403. Hangeland’s one-footedness leaves him rooted and optionless at times.

And he’s untested in a high line. Has anyone ever seen him break stride and actually run? He certainly doesn’t look quick.

If he’s bought as competition for Verm and Djourou, fair enough. But as some kind of super sub blocker to play tall forwards? Seems unlikely…

  404. Queen of Suburbia

James – I think you are very lucky that it is Yogi that moderates this blog.

If you’re going to stick around, why not contribute?

  405. Gris Gris, come on, thats a bit of an exageration. If denilson improves the same this year he will then be at the level of Phil Neville. OIMHO

  406. I’ll be very surprised if Arsene buys Hangeland – we would have to change the way we play to accommodate him because he is better suited to an ultra defensive line up like Fulham rather than a team that has to go out and attack and actually try to win games. You need to take risks in that kind of set up and that leaves the defense exposed at times so the defenders need to be quick of thought and fleet of foot and he is more in the Senderos/Cygan mould and we know how they have suffered under that set up.

  407. Queen of Suburbia

I’m not a huge Hangeland fan but if he does indeed sign and brings extra competiveness and sharpness to our existing players, i have no issue with that.

Also if his signing removes another barrier preventing some from supporting the team then that can only be good too.

  408. Queen of Suburbia

James, what is your argument against the Denilson stats?

  409. Queen of Suburbia

Or put this way..do you agree that the role of a DM is primarily to win the ball and give it to our creative players?

  410. Passenal, agreed.

Anyone know anyone with a Nikki B shirt?

It’s a touching offer and all that but I don’t think he’ll have to break the bank.

    Wilshere future No.10?

I think the club are mad not to give Arshavin no.10 over the summer. They’d have made a fortune selling Arshavin 10 shirts. Anyone know why he likes 23? Does he want to look like Becks?

  411. You know that looks like fun Truly…

    My turn…

“Those global warming stats are bull…It’s just hot outside.”

I could get to like this…

  412. Queen of Suburbia

    10 was already taken Limparassist?

  413. Queen of Sub, I know this. Yogi is a talented writer and fair Judge which is why this is one of the best blogs around, i’m being serious about that as well. The truth is queen that all the tactical stuff is a load of bullshit to be honest. Sometimes the ball goes in the net, sometimes it doesn’t. When it comes down to liking or disliking players though its down to personal choice, I think Denilsons an average player, you think he’s great. Its all just banter really isnt it. One thing i will say though is that ive never been rude to anyone on this blog who hasn’t been disgustingly rude to me first, for talking about football. Also i must add, I can be very childish and these blogs give me a release which enables me to be semi normal in the real world. Anyway, enough about me, what time am I picking you up? Joke

  414. QOS,

    James is a spud.

His argument against the Denilson stats is that they upset him and remind him that he must watch a donkey like Huddlestone huff and puff round shite hart lane instead.

  415. Yeah but Gallas only took 10 because Wenger didn’t want to pressure another attacker by giving him Dennis’ old number.

That’s not a good enough reason to keep it from a true Number 10 like Arshavin, a real fantasista.

  416. Densilson aint completely rubbish, he’s just so average. Theres no spark about him at all. Alonso, Barry, Essien op up and win matches and are capable of being dynamic. Denilson just a good player and thats it. I dont think thats enough for at team thats aspires to win the title. IMO

  417. Queen of Sub, dont worry I’ll understand if you cant speak to me because I know how clicky they are on here. I’ll just read you from afar like a weirdo hiding in a bush

  418. James,

He can’t be an average player though can he ? By any yardstick, a player that captains their country at international level at any level, can’t be average. Also, following your argument through, it follows that the brazilian team selectors have got it wrong; for by the way, the best footballing country in the world; the arsenal scout got it wrong; then Wenger got it wrong. And then, after multiple games, Wenger got it consistently wrong, because he saw the same average performance every week for 37 games.

Of course James, it might be that you are calling him average when compared to Lothar Mattheaus and Cafu, in which case I might be in agreement, but until then, my assessment is that you are blowing smoke out of your arse.

  419. QoS – I would not bother engaging james the spud, he is not an Arsenal supporter no matter what he might claim to the contrary.

I don’t think Arsene should be buying players who are wrong for our game just to get the disaffected minority to support the team (not that he would) but if he thinks Hangeland is right for us, I will have nothing to say about it. I’m just expressing some scepticism about the possibility, although Arsene has already surprised me twice during this transfer window so anything is possible!

  420. Thanks for the reminder about global warming, axis. I nearly forgot to turn on my patio air-conditioning.

Now where did I put my reusable carrier bag?

  421. I agree with Passenal!

I am not convinced that Hangeland can play in an attacking team that plays with a high line. We already have 2 slow CBs in the squad – Phil and Silvestre and we don’t need another one especially for a reported £15m.

I don’t think we will go for him.

I am still hopeful that we will buy the 2 players we need.

  422. Muppet, if Arsenal win the league or look like a really strong team again then i’ll hold my hands up, untill then he’s just another good prospect and how many of them has football seen over the last 200 years?

Night Night god bless I’m going back to my bush

  423. Cafu didn’t start to play regularly until he was 27.

  424. Queen of Suburbia

I can’t quite work him out Passenal – he enjoys the attention of the fights for sure, and he rarely engages on a “football” level, but he’s not stupid, tis why i thought there might be something behind the machisimo.

I agree re: not signing players just to please the doomers and figured somebody would pick me up on that as soon as I hit send. I guess I should have said that if as an unintentional side effect of signing him, it shuts up a few of the “unsupporters” (i might use that again). Then its no bad thing.

  425. James,

Denilson had an excellent season last season. He just wasn’t ready to be part of a team that challenged for the league. I believe that the manager’s expectations of some players was too much last season but after the experience of last season they should be better prepared this season.

How many other 21 year olds are are good as Denilson in the “defensive” midfielder role?

  426. QoS

I agree that we shouldn’t just sign anyone and AW will not do this but we have money from sales and that’s enough to buy the players we need.

  427. Queen of Suburbia

AIC how much of that “not ready” due you think was due to the fact that he wasn’t in a midfield that contained Fabregas, Hleb and Rosicky but instead was playing with emerging talents instead?

  428. Queen of Suburbia

*do not due. I’m not from Brooklyn.

  429. Well don’t tell us, AIC. Tell Wenger which players he needs, then he can buy them. What are you waiting for?

  430. Queen of Suburbia

Nice to see Rio Ferdinand looking off the pace tonight. He’s due a really lousy season.

  431. AIC,

We havn’t as yet qualified for the CL. Celtic are a serious banana skin. Can’t see Arsene actaully spending money until 26th and he’s already hinted at this. There is obviously different depth requirements to having a squad for 2 competitions as opposed to 3 no?

James : Your post at 10.18 is remarkably honest..!!

  432. QoS

That’s definitely part of it. When Cesc started he had the Invincibles alongside him and it made a huge difference. We had too many inexperienced players which unbalanced the side. The whole midfield had to be replaced which screwed us.

Denilson also had simply not played enough Premiership football. It Flamini 3 seasons to get to where he did and last season was Denilson’s first full season. He was excellent in my opinion.

A more experienced player can help Denilson and Song to develop.

  433. Queen of Suburbia

There is sense in that Joe, although in Hangelands case, he is already CL tied until Jan, so it would make no difference re: him signing now or in two weeks time.

  434. If we want to win the champions League, we’ll have to negotiate far slippier banana-skins than Celtic.

  435. Queen of Suburbia

True PZ. I fancy our Carling Cup team would beat Celtic by 3 clear goals over two legs.

  436. PZ,

I liked the look of Melo. David Villa is a great player but not a realistic target. Despite my dislike of him I think Carvalho would be good but I can’t see us getting him either. I wouldn’t have minded Alonso last year.

I need to watch more football to try and find a young fast centre back. What about Zapata? Any thoughts?

  437. Agreed also – Denny was superb last season – especially for a player so young who had to adapt to a new position at such short notice. My gripe is why we had to take such risks in the first place not having signed Alonso and letting Diarra / Gilberto / Flam go. It was an unnecessary risk and IMO has been Wengers single biggest gaff in his 13 yrs at the club. I just hope he doesn’t take the same risk again. Song is the only natural DCM we have IMO.

  438. Joe,

We will get past Celtic. I am not too worried about them even with no new signings.

  439. The season begins in a few days. We have big games from the start, and we are going to be represented by the players we already have. They’d better be good enough; and they are good enough.

  440. PZ,

Yes, but do we have enough of them?

  441. A friend of mine just put a facebook album up of him and his brother on the emirates tour.

There’s one of a poster, Pires sitting in the changing room at white hart lane having just won the league, big smile on his face and my mate’s tagged a whole load of spurs fans as different parts of Bobby’s anatomy.

    Imagine if you will:

“Oo, Dave’s tagged me in something here (click) I wonder where we were. Wonder how I look more’s the point, I bet I look good… la la la… ‘ere we go… half a second, who’s that handsome… oh. OH……

    …..OH YOU BASTARD”

    They’re gonna love it.

    And they met Charlie George.

  442. David Villa is the only one of those players I like; but, as you say, he is not a realistic target.

I don’t know much about Zapata. His ability to play at left- and right-back as well as in the centre would be very useful.

  443. Pz:

We won’t even get to the group stages unless we beat Celtic.! Its a game of huge importance from a football and financial perspective.

    QoS:

Im not so sure Hangerland’s lack of pace or being tied in CL is going to effect the decision making as much. IMO, Europe is a more technical league – which is why it suits our game. We don’t get attacked aerially so much playing European opposition – so If Arsene does go for Hangerland – it’ll be to use him primarily in the premiership where many teams attack us with high balls.

But it is questionable whether Arsene would pay 15m for a player like this unless he can compensate for his lack of pace by reading the game well. Adams, Keown, Sol – we not the most mobile of players either.,,,,

  444. Guys, save your bullets for tougher battles. Denilson doesn’t need much defending. His performances were beyond question. Now he has to do it again and the sheep will come around.

  445. AIC,

Im confident we’ll beat Celtic too – but the fact remains that it would be naive to my mind to spend 20-30m on 2-3 players – unless we’re absolutely sure we’re in the competition.

  446. Queen of Suburbia

I guess by Sept 1st we’ll know one way or another Joe!

I personally like Senderos to do that sort of job anyhow…and as Wengerball showed a few days ago, the conceding goals due at set pieces issue is a bit of a myth anyhow.

Wenger thinks ahead though and if he feels that Gallas willl move on next year, i doubt he’ll wait until next summer to establish who his replacement will be, either at the club or needing to be brought in.

  447. Any new signing will not improve the best team we can field at the moment. He will just be an addition. That is not to say that an addition would be unwelcome. I liked the idea of Chamakh, and I’m disappointed that the deal seems to be off, although I’m not convinced we’ve heard the last of it. Nevertheless, we have plenty of attacking players.

To me, there is some truth in the suggestion that we lack back-up in central midfield. It depends on how well Ramsey or Diaby, for example, can fill in.

  448. Queen of Suburbia

I like Ramsey a lot. He’s at the very least, going to be the best player in the Carling Cup this season.

  449. Joe,

I we can get the players we need we should get them and not worry too much about other teams like Celtic.

  450. There are disappointing rumours around that Bendtner has injured his hamstring and Ramsey limped off the pitch against Montenegro.

  451. Question, Joe. Are you Arseblog? You sound very much like him.

  452. Passenal,

I hope your rumours are wrong but I will be 100% unsurprised if you are right.

  453. Ole,

No mate. I’m not Arseblogger. And if you need confirmation of that ask YW who confirmed when the real arseblogger appeared on this site. Nor do I contribute to any other sites. Nor do I impersonate other people……amongst some of the accusations levelled.

AIC – I don’t disagree that we need at least two additions – but Im pretty confident that we will not sign until after 26th. Just my thinking.

  454. I’ve also just read that Theo didn’t play tonight because of a ‘side strain’ WTF? Who came up with the bright idea of international friendlies 3 days before the start of the new season?

  455. Passenal,

Shambles. And Bollocks. And fried crap, this international friendly week.

More proof the pots at FIFA dont know what they’re doing.

  456. At this rate 5 new players will not be enough.

  457. Hopefully they all sound like short-term injuries

  458. What is it with Arsenal players and picking up injuries on International duty.

  459. Barca_Gunn_Salute

We made a concrete and firm offer of 40mil pounds to Arsenal for Fabregas. He’s coming home.

  460. Barca_Gunn_Salute

I salute u gooners for nurturing Fancesco while he was with u

  461. Barca_Gunn_Salute

Thank You Thank You Thank You

  462. Barca_Gunn_Salute

Can’t sleep. Am so so so excited !!!

  463. I hope you’re ready for a few sleepless years ahead Barcaonian

  464. Barca_Gunn_Salute

Please do not be angry G4E. I respect u guuners. U play good football (Barca inspired football). Barca and Arsenal are allies. Just like Spain and the UK are in Nato. Its really really unfortunate u have money issues. If not u will be able to hold on to ur best players. We will help whichever way we can. We can loan out our fine young reserves to be nurtured by ur fine club. We will buy back at a fair price. That way everybody wins.

  465. Barca_Gunn_Salute

At barca, we dont have feelings for our players. If u are stale, we will sell u, just like we did etoó. We do not keep players just for nostalgic personal feelings. We want Cesc because he is one of the best around. If he gets stale in a few years, we will ship him out and get a new young player in. its like bread.

  466. Barca_Gunn_Salute

By the way, Hleb too was a great player. But he doesn’t suit our game. He holds on to the ball too long. But great player non the less. We wish him well.

  467. Barca_Gunn_Salute

Please do not misunderstand me. I dont view arseal as our feeder club. No way. U are too big for that. Anyway, We have our feeder club in the Segunda. We view arsenal as equals. U can buy our players too if u have the money. Messi, i can tell u for a fact will consider joining u if u can pay what he and Barca wants. Man City may have the money but no class. If they come in for Messi, he say no way. But Arsenal, he will consider. And we will respect that. I hope u understand me.

  468. Barca_Gunn_Salute

That is why, we have G14 clubs. Even if Arsenal are poor now, we still respect them for their values and the way they play. Chelsea, Man City no class. No history. Play like old men.

  469. arsenal may have alot of youth and people may give them a tongue lashing calling them a training ground. truth is, they are young but they posses more talent than almost any club. arsenal has history dating back to the start of the 19th century. currently and also more importantly they have a bright future, one which can arguably outshine any other team. i respect barca, they are my 2nd team. they have talent mixed with experience, this season you may even see arsenal emulate the 08/09 barca

  470. Barca_Gunn_Salute

Wenger is a legend in our eyes as well. But he loves arsenal too much to come to us or any other team. That is why we respect arsenal.

  471. Barca_Gunn_Salute

U are very lucky to have such a coach. Now barca has one in Pep. Unlike those madrid bastards.

  472. Barca_Gunn_Salute

I’d like to re iterate … If arsenal have the money, they will be on par with us. That is reality. We might be swapping players season after season. But for now, unfortunately, u do not have such monetory powers. But give support to Wenger, he knows what he’s doing. Soon u will be as powerful as us. U sell us wilshere…..then u buy messi from us for example.

  473. Barca_Gunn_Salute

So do not be saddened by Cesc leaving. Bear with it for 2 or 3 seasons and u will be able to buy him back. U will be big.

  474. After Hleb made the statement,

    “leaving Arsenal was a mistake”.

Do you think Cesc is daft enough to make the same mistake?

  475. Barca_Gunn_Salute (aka Truly AFC),

We all know you are Truly AFC. You are not a Barcelona fan, so why don’t you go away and dig that big hole that we spoke about.

  476. I see an election is coming up in barca next year, no wonder the cesc to barca stories are gathering momentum.

quality electioneering material. I am now quite confident that it is rubbish and is also more in response to real buying CR than anything else!

  477. Cesc Fabregas is a football player first and he will not leave a team where his name is the first one on the team sheet to sit on the bench even if it is Barca. He is good friends with Hleb and Flamini and he knows first hand what has happened to them since leaving “one of the most exciting teams in Europe” to quote Alex.

  478. Bendtner, Ramsey and VanPersie all of our players are made of glass.

  479. We’re not the only team with injuries – man u and liverpool also have several injured players at the moment.

  480. A fair analysis of the squad at the moment I think. I’d like to see one or two more brought in to beef us up a bit.

I’m not one of the doom and gloomers though and I think we’ll pick up some silverware this season.

Interesting to see us 13/5 to win any of the major trophies this season.. That looks a bit tasty to me.

With a break here and there, this could be the year the youngsters lift the Caring Cup.

  481. Passenal
Our injuries hurt us an awful lot more then those injuries hurt them.

  482. Bobby McMahon stated he believes arsenal will win the primere league. a bold statement but i love to see that a pundit shares the same view. 4get barca, we will become equals without the crasy money. we may even surpass them due to finacial crisis around the world. look at argentina, the government has to pump money into the clubs. with real mad spending, i wont doubt the spanish government would have to step in

  483. Had a dream last night that we won the league, i was there celebrating in the street and the bus goes past and Capello was the manager…… urgh!

  484. Reffering back to James’ post regarding the Diaby / Nasri incident?

You can see the challenge here:-

    http://www.caughtoffside.com/2009/08/02/arsenals-abou-diaby-to-blame-for-samir-nasris-injury-video-why-am-i-not-surprised/

    how can you blame Diaby?

  485. uker 12 – Steven Gerrard was made of glass for the first 6 / 7 years of his career – there was even talk of his career being cut short due to a persistent back problem. It’s only been the last few yrs he’s made it through the majority of a season.

  486. good point rev

  487. I agree with Passenal and ConsolsBob, Hangelaand is an unlikely Arsenal player.

  488. Alex Ice Cream

    rev,

Yes but we seem to have a a number of such players.

  489. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

That means that we also agree about Hangeland.

  490. rev
Thats great for Gerrard but what does it have to do with Arsenal and our constant injuries for the last few years ?

  491. If you look at Steven Gerrard’s injury record, if he was an Arsenal player, you people would say he was injury prone.

  492. Hangelaand is unlikely however is wenger ready to make an unlikely signing to give us something different at the end of last season it looked possible.

I just want Vincent Kompany wenger had his eye on him for years.

  493. Frank, the other day you were saying about matchday tickets being next to the away supporters section. Do you know this from personal experience or is there some way of finding out where season tickets/matchday tickets are allocated in the ground?

Around us in block 115 there seem to be a mixture of season tickets and those sold on a match to match basis.
    Thanks.

  494. Carib

Bobby McMahon is the only commentator in the UNited States who makes sense. Top analyst and truly has a passion for the game. He’s ften sat next to two soccer ‘anchors’ who are generally witless about Football. Without him Fox Soccer Channel would have been 100% unwatchable (other than the games).

He’s the antidote to that idiot Tommy Smith who ruins every game with his mindless commentary (including his desperate attempt for a catchphrase, ‘a bulge in the old onion bag’).

Long story short, if Bobby thinks we have a good chance to win the title, it proves he knows what he’s talking about!

  495. sorry, Smyth.

  496. Frank
He is not an Arsenal player and for the first four/five years of his career he was injury prone. We have several players that keep getting injuried and others that keep pick up knocks and talking about Stevie Me has nothing to do with that.

  497. Hangelaand is too slow for our high offside line if we defended deeper he would a great buy but as we don’t.

  498. My point,uker12, is that other players in other clubs are injured far more frequently than you think. The ‘injury prone’ status that you attribute to certain players probably deserves a great deal more analysis.

  499. Vincent Kompany I want him I feel Man C nicked him off us, I always thought we’d get him I think he’d be what we need.

  500. Uker12, most men stop growing in height at 25 years old, after that age, the body balances out (unless you’re Rosicky)… hence one of the reasons most athlete’s hit their peak 2 or 3 years later.

  501. I see the ‘high line’ has now become received wisdom.

  502. Perrygroves, the away sections for league matches are in the lower tier. I think 20,21,22 but not sure. Just below you. For greater allocations e.g. Cup matches and ECL I believe that 23 and 24 etc are used, and in some cases upper tier sections. I assume that there are season tickets seats in section 19, adjacent to away supporters, as this never changes, but not in sections 23 and 24 etc as these seats are often allocated to away support.

  503. Frank
That is all well and good, yes other teams have injuries (some worse than us; West Ham two years ago) but we are the worst out the top four always and our squad can least afford them.
You also don’t need to be an expert to call it a high line when the centrebacks are closer to the centre-circle than the goal.

    rev
Thats sounds to me like a good reason to buy some 26 year old players so :)

  504. The real point, uker12, is the degree to which the past history of injury for any player is in anyway indicative of the likelhood of injury in the future.

  505. Frank,

Not that you read LG, but did you see their post yesterday.

It was a medical post, where they put the blame on Tony Colbert, our fitness coach, for our persistent injuries:

    http://le-grove.co.uk/2009/08/12/unravelling-the-medical-nightmare/#comments

  506. Presumably the defensive line is ‘high’ when it is abnormally further away from our own goal than either it or those of other teams in similar circumstances.

  507. Thanks Frank. Makes sense about sections 23 and 24.
I get the impression that the corners of the upper tiers are sold on a match by match basis too.
I was wondering if there was a diagram of the stadium showing where season tickets were situated.

We’re bound to play a high line because we’re always in the opposition’s half!
It’d look stupid if the back four were sat 50 yards behind the midfield.

  508. Tony Colbert ws very remiss for not foreseeing the Eduardo leg break and kick in the groin, Abou Diaby legbreak, Tomas Rosicky kick to the back of the thigh, RvP foot break and twisted knee, Cesc, twisted knee etc etc.

There are many factors involved in injuries but the irony of it is that the more physical and committed the player the more they are likely to get crocked. We have had more than our fair share of injuries and yet those people who call us injury prone, also claim we lack this ‘grit’ stuff.

  509. I agree, perrygroves, with all your points there. If I find a season ticket ‘map’, I will let you know.

  510. perrygroves thats what I was going to say. If you always attack then your defence is upfield so the there attack cant stretch you. However maybe Hangelland dosn’t have the pace required.

  511. Yes. Double standards abound. Just the same as the frenzy for new signings, then the complaints about those signings. Vermaelen is now too short etc.

  512. Frank
Diaby was injuried a lot last season, probably be injuried a lot this season.
Gallas has a had a layoff of around one-two months for each season he has been here probably will this season.
VanPersie can’t play three games in a week due to the need to mind him.

We have injury prone players at this moment in time maybe some will grow out of it and some won’t but right now for this season we do and a small bit more cover would help.

  513. Muppet would you make any signings?

  514. Frank

We play a high-defensive line, all the pundits mention it (Lee Dixon in particular blathers on about it) and I can see it with my own two eyes. I’m not trying to say that this is a good or bad thing (it has as many benefits as drawbacks), I’m not trying to “increase the negativity” surrounding Arsenal like the big bad media is always doing, I’m simply making the point that Hangelaand won’t fit with this system and that is why we probably will not buy him.

  515. Yogi has a new post.

Els – I would leave it to Wenger to decide.

  516. The way things are going I’m doubting Diaby’s ability to make it. Like last season, AW has been looking forward to him being the third person in a new 4-3-3 formation. Diaby, Song and Cesc. This may however, not come to fruition because Diaby is once again reported injured with a groin problem. He couldn’t get going in the preseason because he had a knee injury.

Every season Diaby seemed to throw away his chances. In 2007/8 he gave in to Flamini, 2008/9 to Denilson (not up to standard) and 2009/10?

I can see Merida or Ramsey upstaging Denilson there in the absence of Nasri and Rosicky.

Its possible AW may play a three pairing of Merida, Song and Cesc as Denilson, Song and Cesc will be an immobile and apart from Cesc, technically average combo.

Diaby, an enigma and a potential that might just not blosom.
