Cesc, Toure & Return Of The Pat

A win in Hannover last night and from the bits I have seen, a relatively decent workout for the players. Credit must be given to Cesc Fabregas for not only scoring the only goal of the game but for also cutting short his holiday to return to training earlier than he had to. Too little credit is given at times to the dedication that players put in to achieve the peak of their games. Onwards to The Emirates Cup this weekend and a full rotation of the squad can be expected, the only reason which I can think that Wenger played with fewer than necessary substitutes.

So long, farewell, gonna get along without you now

Alas poor Kolo, I knew him well. Actually that’s a bit of lie since I did not know him at all but as author I claim as much right to artistic licence as the rest and there has been some of that this morning in the back pages. More of that later though.

Toure has gone, so much for his brother’s recent observations that Kolo would not take the step down to join Manchester City. Whichever way you look at it, a good servant to the club has left, a link to the past severed. Having been a sterling performer for Arsenal, Toure Senior has been sold when the currency offered by Manchester City was too much to reject. he will rightly be missed, his performances over seasons past surely earn him the right to considerable respect in our rememberances. Whether he is in decline or not remains to be seen. Perhaps a new challenge sought will reinvigorate him. May be not and perchance Wenger has spotted something that may yet become apparent. Some handwringing is taking place but the future is found by looking forwards not down to navels.

Some are demanding Hangeland, other names will no doubt be thrown into the ring in the coming days. Whatever the case, the demands for confirmation regarding the amount of money that Arsene has to spend will go unheeded. A public affirmation that the transfer fees for Adebayor and Toure are there to be spent is tantamount to telling a club with whom Arsenal wish to conduct business the combination to the corporate safe. It simply is not going to happen and is futile requesting such information. One aspect of this silence will no doubt be continued ill-informed speculation about the state of the club’s finances, more sabre rattling from R&W to suit their own position rather than pursuit of the truth.

Whichever way you look at it, £16m for Toure is good business. He could have left in the next season or two for nothing so financially speaking, Arsenal are a lot better off. From a playing perspective, that answer cannot be given until the season starts. Pre-season is a useful guide but ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby as the song goes. There is an inherent risk in this policy since Wenger has only to look at the past two seasons to see the impact that a good and an indifferent start to a campaign has.

Undoubtedly any transfer activity that allows some of the pre-season to get to know the squad is beneficial. The pre-season tour to Austria was always going to leave a lull in any activity that was not concluded before the squad departed and there is nothing wrong with a little patience to see where the leaves from other transfers fall.

Going back to my roots, yeah

Amazing how a little hysterical observation from Ian Wright Wright Wright becomes fact. Sort of like Science Fiction only without the Science and a little too much fiction. An unlikely scenario emerged with Wright telling his Talkshite listener that Patrick Vieira was returning to Arsenal on a pay-as-you-play deal. Credibility, if that is the right word, was given to the story in this morning’s The Sun where the initial transfer talk was hyped up alongside another piece telling us how Arsenal had never replaced the Frenchman. The current trio of Song, Diaby and Denilson were all dismissed as not being up to the task. The piece justified the transfer talk indicating the quietness of the market or the truth in the story. You decide which one you want to believe for I know my choice…Curiously enough both articles were penned by the same hack who, I am sure, was under no pressure whatsoever from his editor to justify the original piece. That Wenger has no history of re-signing players or offering deals to 33 year old midfielders whom he previously believed to be in decline is the fundamental flaw in the whole story which eluded them.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. You’ve gotta hand it to the Sun, if they want to give a story legs nothing can stop them.

From the time Wrighty said what he said I knew it would be the lead for the Sun and other Murdoch related outlets.

  2. Vermaelen looked the business yesterday. So that was the good news from yesterday, that and the way the team clicked and looked commanding in the first half against Hannover96.

What I like about TV is his distribution. He has this knack of directing even his tackles to a team mate. Let’s hope he keeps proving he can do the business.

  3. A new page, a new dose of reality. I don’t know what to think or what to believe these days. But now, having to choose who to believe between Ian Wright and Yogi’s Warrior, I am choosing the latter! No commercial pressures on you to churn out trash, YW. But on the tail end of the previous thread I was fantasizing about PV4′s return. And I quite enjoyed it, thank you very much! P.S. I think I only spotted 4 sould-boy references today, YW.

  4. soulboy

  5. His distribution was/is excellent, I also thought Song looked excellent.

I am worried that those pre-season displays makes Wenger think there’s no need to buy.

BTW. is it VIEIRA or VIERA? All the papers seem to think it’s VIERA or maybe they’re just thick.

  6. I remember Nic Bendtner had a great pre-season last season. (struck up a good partnership with Vela). THis pre-season he seems to be doing the business again. He is starting to look well established in the squad now and his link-up play is developing nicely. Like Theo, he is starting to have the look and body language of someone who knows he belongs on merit.

  7. I cant see anything wrong with signing Vieira.Man Utd have done the same with Owen.A pay as you play deal is perfect. And what a lift it would give the club.

  8. Nic’s been my player of pre-season so far. Been involved in so many goals. What’s left to see is his strength if by any chance he has to play upfront alone.

  9. its seems vermaleen is really good! Who knows what channel the emirates cup will be aired. I trust arsene despite so many fans warring their mouths all over

  10. Gooner Ted

I thought I told you.. Paddy has played half what Owen has in the past two years .. comparing him to Owen should give him light.. but sadly it doesn’t..

  11. The Sun Reported on this guy..

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12963_5452371,00.html

..signing for Arsenal in a back page spread just before Arsenal signed Eduardo.
According to the Sun it was a “done deal” but it was later found out to be some journo copping a blog and just running a story on it.
    Pathetic really

  12. Agree with you YW, a return for Vieira seems contrary to Wenger’s previous dealings.

That is until Silvestre last year. Wenger has said many times how valuable Silvestre’s experience has been in training. Vieira may be an option as a back up player with a future coaching role.

Of course, being a World Cup year, if Paddy wants to play in South Africa, he’d be best off getting regular games elsewhere.

  13. Gooner Ted. I agree, the Return of The Pat would give the club a lift. Where we might differ though, is I don’t feel we’re exactly sinking, right now. But I guess you can be lifted from any height. (Jesus what absolute b*****ks I write sometimes!!!!)

  14. It’s spelt Vieira.
FACT OF THE DAY: Vieira is Spanish for scallop. Thank you.

  15. Song was looking good…i think hes ready for the big time, specially alongside denilson.
Vermaelean looks really composed on the ball. i think he might do a sagna! and eboue was clueless as usual.

ramsey’s getting a lot of play time. he might be a regular on the bench next season?

  16. Yeah Baby! El Capitan Fab is back early with a bang!… Too bad we had to loose Kolo!….As for Viera, i think that’s a marvellous idea!

  17. Alex Ice Cream

AW has a great record in cashing in on players who are past their best so if AW is happy to sell Kolo then fine.

My issue is with replacements, or the lack of them. All too often Arsenal sell players on and fail to adequately replace them or replace them at all like when Vieira was sold.

AW wanted to keep the sqaud together and has not done that. We need to replace Kolo and the “7 CBs” argument is just nonsense. I still think we need a CM and to replace Ade. We have many forwards but most are number 10s rather than out and out centre forwards.
Of the 3 positions striker is where we need to buy the least.

If we are serious about success this season we must buy, its that simple.

  18. AIC,

In all probability we will buy. AW saying that “he is looking at opportunities” is the most he will say in that regard publicly atleast.

  19. AIC,

Wenger is a genius. To secure £48 million for a transfer war chest in the middle of a recession is just breathtaking. Whilst Newcastle is valued at £48 million, Wenger manages to sell 3 players, all for reasons I will accept, so we can shore up the squad.

Don’t believe all this guff that Wenger is not going to spend it. He’s only saying that to ward off those clubs who will be putting their prices up when they see us coming.

The 7 CBs comment was just to deflect from the any questions about why Toure has been sold.

Buy who AIC ? Please tell us.

  20. AIC

    That is your opinion mate

My opinion is that Wenger will buy 1 more player, that player will be a replacement for the outgoing Eboue. RB we havn’t got not cover if hes going like it seems, Toure also covered at RB last season or the season before at times so that is the position we are lacking in numbers. I expect this player to be a vesatile defender of real quality.

Possibly there can be another Silvestre like signing, and maybe in the form of a certain Patty Vieira, we have to wait n see! What i do know is, that Wenger will yet again surprise a few people with his next signing. Makes me laugh time n time again how everyone seems to be ready to commit suicide everytime Wenger says he wont buy, or wont sell, then goes out and does the opposite. Anyone catching onto the pattern yet…??

  21. CB’s:

    Gallas
    Vermaelen
    Djourou
    Song
    Silvestre
    Senderos

Currently 6 CB’s on our books. Is that enough?

  22. It strikes me as very strange that people are getting so desperate about the sales we have made and the need to buy. As it stands we have lost 2 players, but got 2 in counting arshavin, plus 2 back from long term injury, plus the youth a year older.

It was probably predictable that the same sites who were screaming for adebeyor to leave are now in hysterics that we are a selling club, apparently rebuilding again, and going to finish 6th without these great players we gifted to man city to win the league with. Idiots.

It should probably tell us something that very little was done to fight off the advances of shitty in either case. we didnt make either player go public for a move. It looks as if wenger was happy to sell for reasons that we cannot know, but should probably give the benefit of the doubt to given his previous.

The fact is, adebyor was wanted out and not rated highly – by fans at least – toure was not a guaranteed starter. If eboue leaves you would expect a new right back though. Personally i think he would be a bigger loss than the other two as he gives us an excellent attacking option that no one else can fill.

  23. Muppet,

The final warchest might be even more than £48M. Senderos might be sold as well as Eboue and he’d probably go for £7-10M.

    Ade- £25M
    Kolo-£16M
    Eboue-Last I heard Fiorentina offered £7M
    Senderos-???

So we might have a warchest of £55M.

What do we do with it though? For me personally money is little comfort. I prefer to have the manager’s desired squad and no money.

    I think we’ll buy.

  24. chrisGoona, But untill we know how good Vermaelan is, theres only 1 who’s world class IMO

  25. arsenehollis

I too believe Eboue must be replaced, the other 2 have players ready at the club who are ready to take their positions.

CF = Bendtner, Eduardo, AA, Vela, Walcott…

CB = Vermaelen, Djourou, Senderos?, Song

RB looks very light now, someone new will be brought in, or maybe Hoyte is good enough to make the jump to 1st team

  26. But is Senderos staying. And Song will be needed in midfield, where we are not strong in numbers.

AW comments that in England it is always about buying players doesn’t bode well.

There are two ways of trying to improve the side.
AW way of developing the players you have, or bringing players in.

AW has tried his way for 4 years, and the team hasn’t moved forward.

Yes, by the end of the season he will the team have back to where it was last season, but that is not progress.

  27. James

I dont think Wenger cares what your judgement on “how good” you reckon a player is…

Vermaelen was captain of Ajax, and is a Belgium International with over 20 caps i believe. Dont you think Wenger has researched how good he is to be spending over 10m on a defender?

  28. If we sell Eboue as well then who is the cover for Sagna??

And Muppet you are spot on. Do you guys believe he would have said something like this instead ” Now Toure is gone, we will absolutely buy a replacement, no doubt ” ??

  29. I think we’ll buy more than one player.

  30. Almunia, sagna, gallas, vermaalen, clichy, fabregas, denilson, arshavin, rvp, bendtner, walcott.

Fabianski, eboue or ???, djourou, senderos, traore, rosicky, song, ramsey, eduardo, nasri, vela

I would ask how many teams have a 4th choice CB as good as senderos, or a 5th choice striker as good as vela? How about players of the quality of Rosicky and nasri who aren’t even first choice?

I agree with Ole, we probably will buy, but until eboue leaves i still do not think we NEED to.

People seem to have this idea that the current side is the same one who started last season. The side that finished last season 4th in europe, cup semi, and losing 1 game in 25 league matches was not that same side. We are better than people, sadly our own supposed fans, give us credit for.

  31. JohnN

How can you measure the progress we are making on a judgement like that? The FACTS are:

*we have moved to a state of the art stadium
*we are growing as a brand over the world
*we are producing amazing attacking footballers
*we are going to play the best football and have done
*the club is run very efficiently
*the players we have want to play for us
*we have the best manager in world football
*our team is young and they look class
*if we bag 1 trophy, we could be onto something very very special

    …..

so there is no progress….?? very stupid comment

  32. JohnN = clown.

  33. OG,

    Agree.

However, if Wenger does not buy, then the hysterics will be funny. I wouldn’t have a problem with that. The biggest clamour is for a centre back, an a defenive midfielder. This means that people don’t have confidence with Vermaelen/Gallas, and Diaby/Denilson/Song. If Wenger decides he does have confidence with those players, then my view is, who are we to argue.

The only other factor is injuries to our attacking players. Eduardo, Rosicky, Walcott and Nasri all tend to be injury prone. Do we need another winger ?

  34. Actually, Eduardo is not injury prone. Of course, somebody broke his leg.

  35. Wenger will never show his hand.

We can’t expect him to say “we have £48m and I intend to spend it all”, that would be silly.

There’s still a month to go and there will be new recruits.

  36. I have not said the club has not moved forward, but has the team moved forward in it’s premiere league performances over the past 4 years? We have had one good season when we challenged, but then players left and we had to rebuild again.

  37. arsenehollis

It is sad, not that the media and others outside the club believe we are the same team, its the fans who can see how much quality we have that undermine the team that annoy me the most. With the return if Rosicky and Eduardo, our squad looks very promising. I can seriously say i can see us pis*ing over everyone this year!

Eduardo – more prolific than Torres
AA – have a full season, plenty of goals to come
Vela – another flair dynamic attacking player added
Walcott – goals/assist are increasing slowly, having more impact each season
Nasri – creative and clever, always improving
Gibbs – looks like a really class LB/LM

We may have lost Ade, Toure, and possibly Eboue. But i dont think Wenger will let them go if he dont think these players are ready to step up or has others coming in.

  38. JohnN what can you do about it if a player wants to leave because he can earn more somewhere else?

We have a wage structure and no player earn extreme money at Arsenal as not to disrupt the harmony.

  39. Have this hunch that Wenger will sell Eboue and try replace him with Micah Richards!

  40. JohnN

Obviously you missed the season before last when we were 1st for the majority of the campaign??

  41. never ever do I want to see Micah at Arsenal, thay guy is clueless and with no technique whatsoever. Eboue is twice the player Micah is

  42. kenyan gunner

Well spotted, Micah would be a good addition. Would he expect 1st team football though is the question. Also, his valuation would be quite high, being young, talented, and english

  43. I think a really good central midfield player is all we need. We have talent their, but maybe not the depth or competition of other places. No harm in making denilson, ramsey and song fight for games.

  44. is it me or Arshavin does have the tendency to go completely missing sometimes ??

  45. The season before last was the one good season I mentioned.
Look, I’m not critising AW as such, as I have said before if I understood all the managers decisions and agreed with them that would mean AW knew no more about football than I did.

I really hope that this team will excell next season. Toure has been replaced by TV and Ade by the returning Eduardo.

But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to see the squad improved by bringing in a top class player.

If AW rules this out as way of improving a trick I believe he is overlooking a possibility.

  46. Where have you been bops ?

  47. Eboue looks to be on his way, so a RB will be needed on top of anyone else coming in. I suspect Wenger knew this from before.

  48. Bops

Does it matter? It’s pre-season. When the real stuff begins, then we’ll worry about who’s missing and not.

    YW

  49. improving a trick? I meant improving the squad!

  50. JohnN

You asked have we progressed, how you wish to measure that is another story. Many fans seem to measure it in 1 way, that is by our end product with Trophies. Very good teams in the past have gone trophyless, like the old great Dutch team. If anyone as a FAN is willing to jump on the players backs before a ball is kicked, and write their OWN team off. Then we aint got a chance.

  51. Muppet @ 12:02 :)

  52. ChrisGoona
I don’t think I have ever critisised an Arsenal player on this (or anyother) forum, and while worried at the way this transfer window has gone, I will never right off our chances!

  53. Arshavin said in a recent interview that he doesn’t really like training and that preseason is his worst time of the year. As yogi said, doesnt matter so long as when the games roll around he is at full speed – looked asleep so far though.

  54. I have to agree with the general sentiment of most of post this morning (and your comments). I am sick of the panicked nature of some other sites. Most of the time I have to chuckle (one week we aren’t buying enough quality, the next we aren’t giving youngsters a chance etc.)

I still think that a DM is needed. I can see Vieira providing an experienced head in the changing room and in training, but would be usure of the impact he could have on the pitch, with the pace of the premiership.

I wouldn’t be adverse to see Cattermole fom Wigan joining if the price was sensible. I watched him a few times last week (father in law is a latics ticket holder) and was impressed. He bullied Lampard out of the game against Chelsea and was good at driving the team against Newcastle (although my 3year old daughter could have outwitted most of them on the day). He’s a bit unpolished but has a good engine and isn’t afraid of putting his foot in when needed. Further, if UEFA press ahead with their ‘proportion of home nation players’ nonsense, he would provide an option there. I also think he is a step ahead of some of the yougsters in similar position (Ramsey is a different type of player IMO before anyone gets hot under the collar).

If Eboue goes, then a LB would be required. Are there any youngsters coming through that could provide cover there thoough? I guess the think Eboue doesn’t get credit for is his ability to play in 2/3 different postions if needed.

    Just my tuppence worth.

    Keep up the good work

    L

  55. Mr commitment (toure) is gone. We thank God for his time wif us. I wanna support the call for Wenger to buy Brede as his replacement. the second comin of Viera will add experience to the team. he doesnt havee to play all games. all we need is his presence in the dressing room

  56. Lydster

Eboue is a Right (R) sided player

  57. sorry meant last year not last week. I need more coffee!

  58. and I stand corrected, see above post…

  59. bops

Yeah the same Arshavin who hit form as soon as he came into the team The same Arshavin who hit 6 goals in 12 starts. What more do you want?

  60. JohnN, dont worry about chrisGoona, he’s incappable of taking on anyone elses point of view. It is suspected he suffers from terrible wind.

  61. Pyles is meddling again. He alleges that Lady Nina will sell out to R & W holdings. Pyles is the single biggest t*unt I’ve seen.

  62. deserg must be trolling, still: where does this reputation of hangerlaand as anything but a slow defender playing in a tactically astute system that suits him come from? The guy is not arsenal class.

Interesting to read someone say that senderos would have to have a vidic like season o be happy with him back at the club – the same vidic that torres and etto stomped all over???? Might not be much difference between those two.

  63. Alex – yeah, with no source, no quotes, nothing to base that on but ill timed sensationalism that is potentially destabilising. Even if it is true, kroenke and fisman would still be the biggest single block, especially with the continued support of the independent share holders.

  64. arsenehollis, yes if the dwarf is right, the AST and other investors/ supporters who control 14% will become key now. If they get behind the board, any takeover attempt can be resisted.

  65. Lovely to see redknapp managing spurs, god things could be so much worse for our club but for the grace of arsene.

They have 3 CB’s, that includes ledley king who is so screwed up he cannot even train and woodgate, with dawson shit and useless holding it all together. They NEED a defender. Up front there is defoe, pavinalaugh, crouch, cunt keane – no real need for strikers.

So who is redknapp talking up signing? Huntellaar. The fans will be happy witha 17mil signing, they will talk up their chances, and the doomers will moan about how we should have signed him and are finishing 9th again. Come october with no defenders and 2 points the truth will out.

  66. Gooner Ted

4 goals at Anfield shows his pedigree, sometimes big players only manage to perform on the biggest stages. I dont think AA is one of them, he still knows he has alot to prove, he said it in his recent interview. He is in a new league, and he is aware that the 4 goals at Anfield are in the past, he has to do it again now.

All i know is that in every game i have watched him, he has made a big impact 1 way or another. His creativity, passing, dribbling, technique, and shooting abilities are there for everyone to see.

  67. Every year Arsene says at the start of the summer his main aim is to keep the squad together and then with his blessing we sell 3 players.Wenger has not put up a fight to keep Ade,Toure and Eboue so why come out with the keeping the squad together rubbish? Having put a transfer request in january and then seen Arsenal sign TV he was never going to stay.

  68. James

So did I offend you once again with your inability to back any form of discussion you bring upon yourself. Piece of advice, don’t cry to others, looks pretty pothetic

  69. Matin

Rule #1 – Wenger never shows his hand.

Rule #2 – When he mentions Squad, and the word Team, the players have to want to be there, and most importantly Wenger must want them in HIS squad.

  70. If you want Wenger to tell the world every summer who he wants to buy, who he is going to sell, then we might as well bring in a Mark Hughes and turn our well run football club into a circus act.

  71. I don’t get this ‘the club lie, waah waah waah’ nonsense that people seem to come out with.

Of course Wenger says he wont sell – if he didnt the prices woudl fall.

Of course wenger doesn’t say he will definitely buy and has wads of cash to do it – the prices would go up.

Of course he says he is happy with the squad – wouldn’t do much for morale if he didn’t.

Football managers will never say everything they think or plan to do in public – nor should they, it would be awful management.

  72. like Phil Brown.

  73. You would think the average fan would understand this… why should we tell our rivals anything in fact!!! Cut off all PR!!

  74. @YW, Ted

Yes it would too judgemental to rate AA now but he has been so amazing last season that I expect him to do Harry Potter stuff all the time..

Maybe we should temper our expectations from him next season.. (even though deep inside I believe he will be our lil russian magic man)

    @Muppet .. work and all that.. :(

  75. chrisgoona 12:32

one must not forget post match Arshavin was the first to say he didn’t exist in the game untill he was scoring last season, his ambition is to be part of everything attacking contribution, like when he plays for the Goose .. pre season training has a heavy toll on the players, im certain this is the case with Diaby, the team is strengthening ..

    this is the one

  76. If people are being nice then they will call your lot optimistic. If they are being normal, they would call your lot foolhardy. And if they are being really laying it on your kin, most of the fans should be kept in a display.

Arsenal is not gonna win shit. The squad that each one of your talks about, will be stuck by injuries. Normal people do not occupy arsenal benches. Djourou, Rosicky, Edurado, all are just a few games away from picking that keeps them out for 5 games.

So keep on dreaming. Only next year, you will not be comparing the squad to the chelsea’s manu or liverpool. You would be doing it aganist everton and the villa’s.

You can all crib about how we are not going to play CL next year, but its gonna happen. Then when Fabreagas leaves, you will say he did for the money. Totally forgetting the fact that you were gleeing when toure left for city because the CLUB thought it was good money.

When clubs dont respect loyalty , then should not cry when its not given. Enjoy the risk free nature of the board. From 2005, we first were not considered for the title, now we are not being considered for the 4the place.

Clubs and people forget that:- It is the essential part of the taking risk that gets you the reward and glory.

Life rewards people, businesses and clubs that take calculated risks. to achieve targets. That the difference between an accountant and a leader. Winning. Out here people have forgotten that as a club arsenal has to compete for trophies.

Arsenal is now an accountant. It will WIN nothing.

  77. Ok doomspud,

go back to your shitehole now.

  78. Great post as ever, YW.

One thing though; you’ve used too much artistic license – the actual quote is in fact “alas poor Yoric. I knew him Horatio. I know that would have been sh*t for the blog, but you know, mis-quoting the bard is a bit like Farhad Moshri referring to Arsenal as “we”. Just wrong.

Footballistically, I think we’ve got the tools to really do something this year. Consistency is the key I feel, and as long as a reliable XI can be settled upon and no more freak maimings occur, we should be putting in an order for a job lot of Brasso come May.

  79. Interestingly, the bookies have shorter odds on us winning the leage this year than they did in the summer of 2007 (when Henry left for Barca). I backed us at 14-1 to win the league after Henry’s departure, the best odds you can get now are 9-1 for us to win the League. Bookies don’t seem as doom-laden as many of our so-called “supporters” do. At the very least, the bookies reckon our chances are better this year than they did in our first post-TH14 season.

Also, Eduardo at 33-1 for golden boot looks like a decent flutter. If he stays fit (a big if, I know) he will be banging them in for fun.

  80. @Doomgooner

Yawwwwn. Most of us really couldn’t give a flying fu*k about your opinion because you’re not a gooner. You’re biased, we’re biased. You’re wasting everybody’s time, including your own. Crawl back under whatever rock you came from and stay there.

Arsene needs to use his head. We need a signing. The squd needs the lift and more importantly the fans need a lift. I am talking a real signing, not another fucking Silvestre signing. The fans can play a big roll in the success of a team and if Wenger fails to bring in a player and give the fans a lift he is running the risk of losing the Emirates, especially if we get off to a shit start. I agree with the author that Wenger cannot come out and say we are going to spend because it would weaken our barganing position but the fact of the matter is we could have shipped out 3-4 players by the end of the window netting close to 50m. The squad was think last season and losing 3 more players on aggregate will just make that worse. Wenger has the money now so he has no excuses for failure. If we fail to win this season then Wenger needs to be fired. Just like any other job. If you are given the goods and fail to produce you must be held accountable.

  82. I find Wengers comments quite desturbing. The funny part is they tried to jump on the grovy train exactly when it crashed and burned with the real estate bubble, something the greedy twats deserve imo. Sadly though they fooked our club bent over with a 12 incher. Sorry but am bloody livid today with Wenger’s comments.

Please could silvestre just die? He’s so useless it’s deeeeeeeeeeepressing!

I remember the days when we actually won something or challenged for something. Now we are just a bloody farce. We sell players every year without fail and replace them shite or not replace them at all. I don’t see how that can be consstrued as sound policy. Curtains on Wenger if he does not get in the transfer market to actually replace some players this time around.

One of the major reasons why I am so frustrated and feel betrayed is the lying that constantly comes out of our club.

The 2nd half against Hannover was like watching a very repetitive episode of groundhog day.. It’s going to turn very nasty if we have a poor start to the season… I will personally add to the nastiness.

Even a child could understand that we should have brought our players in early! Wenger is a naive little child if he thinks waiting until deadline day reduces player’s prices! It really fooking doesn’t especially when the other managers all know you have just made around £40m on selling players!! What is does do is reduce the number of prospects you have to chose from because a lot of players already secured their deals!

Fooking wake up Wenger! We need 3 very well established, quality players to come in !!!!!! You have sold 2 first team experienced regulars! That means you need to bring in at least 2 players that will be seen as starters, not back ups or babies with potential to do well in 3 years! They have to be quality now! Then if you want to improve on last year you need to sign that extra quality man, making it 3 new players! If you think Rosicky is fit enough and capable of play on the right then buy Huntelaar! If not then by Hazard or Gourcuff!

As for the Arsene comments about keeping the squad together… jeez… another bare faced lie! The value of a player is determined by the length of contract and the resistance of the club to sell. Not whether you say you are going to sell. On the one hand we’ve got Wenger telling us he’s not going to let anyone go… on the other, we’ve got him telling us that he’d sell Ade to a rival… why bother with the first lie?

  83. Kolo Live interview on sky explaining why he wanted to leave..

  84. Lol Muppet! You just encapsulated every doomer comment over the last week.

  85. sad to see kolo go (gutted)

seems the de-africanization of arsenal continues if eboue goes. eboue a good sqaud player in many positions.

i think we are weaker than 4 wks ago.
we sold our top scorer, one of our best defenders, and now it looks like we selling one of our best utility men.

wenger must have a plan as i thought he wanted to keep the squad together not dismantle it.

prob have a few deadline day signings

    Gee’s recomendations

Mario Balotelli – good replacement for ade – hell id even put the full 25mill for him. Future great. if inter are willing to sell!

Alberto Aquilani – better than de-rossi but seems injury prone.

    Kun aguero- cant afford him

  86. are you serious muppet? or just messing?

  87. Kitchen Sink, what did Kolo say?

  88. i like it that wenger does not give any info on his targets.

the question is if he don’t get some replacements in, does anyone think we will be strong enough? and why?

  89. The Doomer's Family

    We agree with Muppet.

Looking for a job Muppet by any chance? We’ll be hiring soon.

  90. Gee Gunner,

“Mario Balotelli – good replacement for ade – hell id even put the full 25mill for him. Future great. if inter are willing to sell!”

Will that be from your own pockets? Now that is a true gooner for all of you. Setting the example for Usmanov and the likes.

You’re a star Gee GUnner. Give Yogi your email id, and we’ll let Arsene know about your funds injection capability.

That makes it 48m + 25= 73M. COME ON ARSENE TIME TO SPEND!!!!!!

  91. notlager

He basically said he knew he was the last invincible and was looking for a way out for the past 6 months .. and desprately wanted to make sure he leaves as soon as possible while he is still at his peak..

  92. Did anyone else notice Mark Hughes rubbing Toures thigh

  93. we still got a good squad and some of the youngsters are hopefully gonna break through this yr
im jus a bit shocked at the players we are getting rid of at the moment.

apart from bentdner i dont think there is another striker at the club who can play the lone front mant role effectively.

Kolo was looking like he was getting back to his best form at the end of last season and even still would be good back up to have around.

Eboue – a very good squad player, play like 4/5 positions.

who covers sagna? (pls dont say hoyte)is djorou ready? has sendy got his confidence back? is bentdner strong enough to handle vidic and ferdinand or terry and ivanovic?

at the mo only aresne know – jus hope he is right.

  94. Living on borrowed time .. the clock tics faster..

  95. Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb has snubbed a move to Inter Milan, instead joining former club Stuttgart on loan.

The Belarusian was due to arrive at the San Siro as part of the swap deal involving Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Barca’s Samuel Eto’o.

    A big hahaha.

I laugh at this dude. He would have been part of the most exciting midfield to ever play football this decade and he went away…pity him.

He can pay to watch Song Dennilson and Cesc

  96. thanks Kitchen Sink.

  97. Hleb struggled in his first season in Spain after leaving Arsenal, making 19 appearances and failing to score.
    :) :)

  98. geeGunner, Dude Eboue aint worth a wank

  99. ateeb – why do you have to be such an idiot.

Im not telling anyone what to do.

its a blog.that is an opinion which im entitled to give. iam not the manager or shareholder so i have no say but on a a blog – i can express an opinion. is that ok with u?

and by the way how the rass is admiring a player and suggesting on a blog that we buy him mean i support usmanov?

You need to stop attacking people for no reason!

  100. The Doomers Family,

    Too busy dooming mate.

  101. DT

It was a deliberate misquote to fit in with KT’s departure…

    YW

  102. geeGunner, exactly it’s a blog. And when Ateeb or any other person think you and james are idiots we are entitled to it.

  103. notlager, why do you think i’m an idiot?

  104. Interesting how players are not very successful when they leave Arsenal. think bar Henry. I cant see to recall anyone who left and fared well.

  105. Regarding Hleb… if he would have stayed in the premiership for one more season he would have ended up with a serious injury… he used to get kicked all over the park, i believe that is why he left as opposed to disliking the club, the fans & AW. If got kicked everytime i walked into the office i’d leave too!

  106. Rev, f#ck hleb and his hair

  107. Overmars did extremely well… as did Van Bronkhorst

  108. Hleb would not get int eh current team anyway, he just wasn’t up to standard. let him rot at Stutgart

  109. Ian Wright hosts Gladiators

  110. Oh come off it? Cos we really cleaned up without him didn’t we?

  111. @Rev

    Oh yeah Van bronkhost….

  112. Hleb is a great player, he could retain possession better than anybody in the Arsenal team, his passing was questionable, and he couldn’t hit a barn door but his movement on and off of the ball was second to none…

  113. (bad spelling) i meant Gio…

  114. notlager – let ateeb fight his own battles.

In general i just post cause i like the ACLF community and i think that they seem to be level headed and good mannared fellow arsenal fans and a change to all the doom i see on other sites. im not looking for acceptance or to be your friend notlager. – i dont really care what you actually think as someone once said “what you eat dont make me shit”

    wheres the love?

  115. i believe Gio won the champions league with Barca & a couple of La Liga’s too despite struggling to make it into the Arsenal 1st team…

  116. geeGunner, dont worry about Ateeb, you know what they say about sarcasm. Its suspected by many on here that his real name is Dorris

  117. Muppet you were very positive yesterday and today it’s the opposite.. What happened??

  118. oh ho.. “Rosicky suffers injury setback” – Sky

it just keeps gettin better.. Guess we shud are used to this by now.. After all we are the Arsenal..

  119. Yes, who is pulling your strings today Muppet?

    (Sorry… Dad joke)…

  120. My doctor lowered my dose cem.

  121. Rosickys cant be injured. Not again god dammit.

Huntelaar is a must, we need players we can rely on.

  122. Rosciky is not injured for God’s sake, he said he was ready to play but Wenger is very cautious with him atm..

    What we need is ;

    replacement for sagna
    DM
    Striker

    and we kick ass

  123. ‘Wenger is very cautious with him atm..’

I dont see what cash points have to do with this, this is serious

  124. It’s only a minor injury. He’s not definitely out of the Emirates Cup.

  125. @James

How do u know u can rely on Huntelaar ??

  126. sorry I meant back-up for Sagna

  127. I was amazed when i heard Rosicky would be playing again having read about his tendon injury… Christ…

If its his hamstring again he’s finished.

  128. bops, well what I do know is that cant get any worse then Rosicky, he’s hardly ever played for us yet seems to of been around for ever

  129. We need to hire Myagi to do that thing where he claps his hands together and cures daniel-son before a big fight. We need Miyagi to fix Rosicky.

    Get me Miyagi !!!!

  130. Why would anyone think that it would be a good idea to advertise our targets? Aside from the fact that Man City would immediately gazump us for any player Wenger mentioned, if for what ever reason we fail to get that player it undermines an existing squad player by telling him he’s not good enough.

It also sends a message that we are desperate to buy and the price goes up.

Some people really need to think it through.

  131. James – I think he’s dead.

    PS That Miyagi, not Rosicky!

  132. I dont buy al this ‘It will ruin the confidence of the player we have’

What a load of crap, it should give the player a kick up the arse to be ‘better’ as wenger would say

  133. Miyagi is not dead !!!!!!!!!!

  134. James,

I’ll have some of what you are smoking.

  135. Were talking about a man who can karate chop the tops off beer bottles. A man who once Karate chopped through a 200mm deep solid timber beam. A man who in three films has only ever been hit once. Miyagi is f#cking invincible

  136. arsenehollis

    …………………………………………….

exactly my thoughts but unfortunately not all can see the obvious…¨

I mean come on you don’t really need to be smart to see this. Please guys wake up!!!!

  137. James,

I think it will be good for you to lay off from watching the karate kid series.

  138. prepare to meet thy doom

  139. We cannot go into the season relying on Rosicky and Eduardo not with there injury records.Minor injury, well it has keep him out of the last 3 games and Eduardo still hasnt played a 90 mins since his comeback in december.Splash the cash Arsene

  140. Miyagi !! (lol)

that dude was soo short dont think he can reach rosicky’s hamstrings..

  141. So long Toure!

    ARSENAL!!!

    NO FEAR!!!

  142. I remember Wenger said that Hleb used to regularly come in at half time with his legs starting to come through with bruises from the way he’d been kicked around in the first half alone. Something to do with his dribbling style apparently, luring the opposition player into making their move first and then him reacting accordingly meant he took a lot of knocks. I don’t see how it’d be any different against non-EPL clubs, aside from him playing a lot fewer games!

  143. I remember Clichy being injury prone, lets hope for the best. Eduardo is not injury prone, is he? He is just recovering from being our for more than a year, he will be fine.

  144. Hleb made the biggest mistake of his life leaving Arsenal, simple as that.

  145. Pat Morita is dead.

He’s very useful in the Kevin Bacon game, because he had a very long and storied movie career.

  146. Paul N

I dont think you will ever see Eduardo start 5 games in a row.And with Vela being inexperienced that leaves us just with a main striker of RVP or Super Nic with Arshavin behind the striker. Its just too big a risk.We need to replace Adebayor.

  147. @Bops

Don’t trust the press so much…

weren’t they the same fools who told us that Edwardo would be out for two months

  148. QOS, Miyagi is not dead, stop saying that !!!

  149. James-san, sit down, take a deep breath.

He is gone to the great dojo in the sky.

  150. Huntelaar will join, it makes perfect sense

  151. Nasir Jones-Nasri

    James,

Still trying to fit in, huh? Your daily digs at Eboue are beyond tiresome. Take your painfully unfunny self somewhere else already.

  152. QOS, oh well, at least we’ve still got the muscles from brussels

  153. Nasir Jones – Nasri – Nasir Smith -Nasir,

    Ok.

  154. A few thoughts,

Looking back on how fast the Vermaelen deal was done, and reading what Toure had to say, it’s clear that Toure was expected to move on.

Eduardo is not injury prone, getting your leg broken does not make you injury prone.

Is selling players who clearly want to leave, worse than keeping players against their will?

  155. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Thanks, James. It would be greatly appreciated.

  156. wengerball, Bosman has ruined it for everybody

  157. This may be somewhat off-topic but here goes….
I have deliberately refrained from making any comment about our recent transfers because these are generally business decisions by the club that we as fans have very little insight. (Learnt my lesson from the Ade saga.) Given how our club keeps its transfer business very secretive, this is a statement of fact, not an opinion.
However there has been so much hysteria and emotionalism in the blogs about the Ade-Kolo transfers I think a little perspective is warranted. Some common threads from my observation:
    * The transfer of a player is both a business and footballing decision. Fan like or dislike of a player is not a tipping point in the process. If that was so, Sylvestre, who is roundly slagged in most blogs, would have been shown the door with Ade, while Kolo who is a fan-favorite would have been retained.
    * Arsenal, like any properly run club, will always take advantage of the opportunity if there is a club willing to pay over the odds for any player. Man Utd did the same with Ronaldo while unwilling to pay over the odds for Tevez. Similarly Milan was willing to part with Kaka. Fans may wish to engage in self delusion and revisionist thinking, by slagging the departing player as a mecenary or whore, but as far as the club is concerned the sale price exceeded the value of the player. Good Bye and Good Luck.
    * Every player has his price regardless of his proclaimed loyalty to a club. Cue Kolo Toro. It may make it easier to overcome the grief of losing a favorite player by denying the lure of money but it is what is, DENIAL.
Fortunately for Arsenal Football Club, AW has built a youth system that is second-to-none in England. Unlike all of its competitors, the club does not have to splash mega-cash in the transfer market to replace good players lost on transfers. Rather, we have an excellent track record of promoting from within, along with one or two key purchases, and not lose our competitiveness and ability to challenge for the top prizes in England and Europe. Of course the media and bloggers will spread doom and gloom about our imminent demise, only to be proven consistently wrong over the past four years.

  158. Nasir Jones – Norman – Nasir – Donald – Nasir,

    No problem.

  159. Armand Traore on ATVO “I think that loan made me love Arsenal even more and made me a fan!” WHich is great. But it does point out also, that players are not automatically fans, in the way we are!…..
Which also points out that some contributors to this and other Arsenal blogs should also go out on loan to support clubs like Portsmouth for a year, so that you too, can learn to love Arsenal even more. And to become a fan!

  160. shotta-gun… some fair points there, so long as we don’t become a feeder club to all the BIG teams in Europe…

  161. Liverpool wont be challenging without Alonso, he was there best player last year

  162. Shotta, i agree. It is our youth policy that allows us to be a selling club. Surely we’d rather be a selling club than a buying club. I guess the discrepancy lies in the fact that there are selling clubs and then there are selling clubs. Arsenal are the latter.

  163. If every club had the cash of Chelsea and Man City, then I’d be worried. Until then, it’s impossible for such a small number of clubs to purchase and collect every star or championship-calibre player on the planet. Even then, that’s no guarantee of success given the need for team chemistry and the possibilities of injury.

In light of the growing number of clubs with trillionaire owners, it’s vital Arsenal continue its strong commitment to youth development and why it’s important to continue having Messr Wenger out there combing the world for the Bacary Sagnas. We will need to make the occasional splash for an Arshavin or Benzema (oh, what might have been), but in today’s landscape, Arsenal can still continue vying for the title each year.

  164. Wenger response to rotation for the Emirates cup

“Well we haven’t played a few players today, like Clichy, Rosicky who played over the weekend”

How does this translate to Rosicky injury setback?

  165. The media’s Arsenal psychological injury battle has begun.. but the player’s in qustion are well prepared..

  166. Matin, how on earth do you know how many games Edurado will start in a row?
We have no idea how fit he is and after being out for so long it is expected to have some minor set backs.

    Agree Shotta! business is business.

Nothing is wrong with feeling bad about Toure leaving, he is class. We are humans afterall and as fans we are not involved really with the financial aspect (apart from buying) of the game so it is our emotions that make us support a specific club or player not business.

  167. Having listened to the post Hanover interview, it is difficult to see where the “Arsene won’t spend” stuff comes from.

On reinvesting money on they squad—
“when we find the right player”
“We don’t make money to put in in the bank”
“We are looking at a few possibilities at the moment”

    On close to signing anybody—

“no not at the moment, we are working very hard to prepare for the new season”
“We are looking as well at some possibilities to strengthen the squad”

  168. California Gooner

It seems that Eboue is likely out the door, as the price is good. I’m not sure I like that. Besides the fact that I think the best is yet to come for Eboue, I just don’t see who will replace him from within the squad. We would have to buy another player, and I can’t see getting a player of his quality without spending a lot of money.

As for the rest of the money, if it is used on a super-class player. Our squad is already littered with the type of players who might sell for 5 to 10 million and youth who can easily step up and become that. To justify bringing someone in i would think they would have to be a significant improvement on that. Give that they would be surrounded by a very, very strong team that is ready to win it all, I think now is the time to make the big purchase.

  169. Mingus and James – I deliberately refrained from using the term “a selling club” because it is so loaded with emotionalism. But every club “buys’and “sells” players….it is inherent with operating in a market system. The fact is some clubs do very badly in the market, by either failing to sell when they should (e.g. Villa would have been better off selling Barry to Pool last year) or paying too much when they buy (cue most clubs in England). Our club is blessed with a manager with a brilliant mind with very little sentiment when it comes to these kinds of business and footballing decisions. His track record is second to none.

  170. It makes me chuckle, reading some other blogs and the comments from readers who simply drive themselves mad trying to decipher or interpret every little quote from Arsene Wenger. If Wenger weren’t questioned by reporters every day of his life, I doubt he’d feel the urge to come out and say anything. He gives the media token, meaningless quotes like “we’ll try to keep the current team together” or “yeah, we may or may not buy someone”, which is fine with me. Who cares what comes out of these daily interviews? Fact is, he’s bought players in the past, he’s sold players in the past. Given that, there’s the potential for a purchase or a sale today, tomorrow or the next day. So let’s relax and see what happens, yeah? It’s very fun to speculate, so speculate. Just don’t waste your time trying to bang your head into the wall trying to decode Wenger’s retorts to the press.

  171. A football club must have two aims in my opinion.

The first and overiding requirement is the long term viability of the club.

The second is to achieve success on the pitch.
The club can try to achieve this by buying ready made players, jam today, or developing its own, jam tomorrow.

Selling should be a means to achieving the above aims.

If the need to sell a player is prompted by problems with the viablity of the club, then the club is not being run properly.

I do not believe for one minute this to be the case with Arsenal.

Therefor, the selling of Ade and Toure should be a means to achieving success on the pitch.

It may well be for footballing reasons, perhaps attitude or some other reason. Only AW knows the answer to this and although I don’t understand it, I bow to his greater knowledge of football.

However, if the money received was the motivating factor, this will only contribute to success if used wisely, either investing in players who can contribute now, jam today, or investing in the future.

The problem is, with the changes in football, the Bosman and Webster rulings, players running down contracts so they can get huge signing on fees and the general movement of players to where they get the biggest wages, can the jam tomorrow policy work, or as someone else said, do we just become a feeder club?

I really hope our methods can and do work, but I am worried.

And just leaving the money in the bank doesn’t seem to contribute to either aim of the club.

  172. It’s interesting that Wenger is selling players top clubs would highly appreciate on past form. Has he seen something from the season analysis plus a close look at current form and stats? Obviously.

Assuming Arsenal has not gone crazy or in terrible debt, we can assume a plan is afoot.

Whether that plan includes buying is another thing altogether. I am totally confident, these issues have been thought through over some time.

Let’s see what we shall see. As for Wenger being flattered by pre-season friendlies, nothing could be further from the truth. This is one strict guy.

  173. Wenger is astute in business!

  174. topman..

  175. .

  176. Cali,

    Why do you rate Eboue?

  177. **Rosicky: “I’m fit and will play in the Emirates Cup”

    http://arsenalanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/07/rosicky-im-fit-and-will-play-in.html

    Great news!

  178. If, as you predict ZimPaul, Arsene is right in his decision to sell Ade and Kolo when they are past their best, do you think sooner or later, rival managers will acknowledge his skill at this, and be suspicious of buying from him!!!!! Is his great judgement going to bring the prices of our players down?!!!

  179. Eboue’s valuable given the fragility of our wingers, and as a backup to Sagna. He’s physical, he makes strong, rapid surges towards the box, and he gets on well with everyone in the locker room from what I understand. Frankly, I wish he wouldn’t dive as much as he did, but he’s still quite valuable to our squad.

  180. thanks happychap

    next on rotation Eduardo..

Eduardo has had a new set back , he has spouted very delicate wings which leave dainty creases on his white pinstripe away shirt..

  181. @ Shotta

    Finally! Lovely post. Cheers.

  182. JohnN – All fans can do is speculate, in vain, about the reasons for a transfer decision. In fact, on this blog and others, for the past two weeks there has been virtual hysteria about the Ade-Kolo transfers. The only thing factual is both are no longer Arsenal players and the club has profitted handsomely from both deals. If the past is anything to go by, AW has identified adequate replacements internally or he will make at least one more buy in the market.

The remarkable thing is how even the most objective posters on this blog have become filled with doom and gloom. Arsenal will be fine.

  183. California Gooner

Joe, why rate Eboue? Let me count the ways:

    His dribbling is very good
His passing phenomenal, often completely unlocking defenses.
He is not good at defensive positioning but is monster at one-on-one defense capable of shutting down an opposing threat.
He is incredibly versatile, something that is useful for the squad (But has probably hurt his career)
He used to freak out when given a shot on goal… but towards the end of last season showed signs of gaining confidence there.

If he really does start relax when in shooting position and maturity leads to fewer mental lapses, he will be phenomenal. It’s hard to find a player who can do all that. Do we have one waiting in the wings (excuse the pun)? I think Wilshire might soon be the complete midfielder, but I don’t know who can cover at RB. So, he would have to be replaced…

  184. Also…post sale interviews with Kolo suggest this move has been in the offing since Jan.

Kolo has wanted out for some time, Wenger had no choice but to accomodate him.

  185. @ mingus on July 30, 2009
    at 4:21 pm

Well, AW’s been displaying astute judgment for well over 10 years now, selling players who are past their sell-by date (eg, Wright, Petit) or at overly-inflated prices (eg, Overmars, Anelka, Adebayor, Hleb). I think that rival managers will always overpay (or buy players past-their-best) when Le Boss decides that it is time to move a player on. What makes you think they will suddenly be able to outfox the master? If they haven’t figured it out already, I don’t think they will manage to do it any time soon.

  186. Muppet, good to see flashes of the old character back. I was beginning to think you were all serious these days!

I love Eboue, really do. Mostly I think for non-footballing reasons. He is always smiling, is apparently a great dancer, everyone on the team says that he is the funniest member of the squad. I think he is one of those absolutely valuable squad members that helps everyone else get along.
I also love him on the pitch. He attacks, runs hard, and displays no fear. He seems to have sorted out his mental lapses after the spuds game last year. I don’t think he’s going. In fact, I’m thinking of getting another Arsenal jersey with his name and number on it just so I can get stuck in to doomers who slag him off because they don’t like him.

  187. So wenger knew all along that Kolo would leave and vermaalen was the ready made replacement, similar to swapping hleb for nasri and we know who got the best out of that deal dont we.

Same fools asking for protests at the emirates cup are the ones who wanted ade out anyway, he was clearly seen as expendable by wenger to – so no big loss, especially with bendtner stepping up and edurado coming back and all we need now is to put a.

    Smart deals all around a

  188. Damn cat sat on the mouse. That should read:

Smart deals all around and all we need now is a new midfielder.

  189. Just saw the news that Xabi Alonso has submitted a transfer request. So the manures have lost big players, ‘pool have lost a great one, and we’ve lost two great players as well. I would say that we are the only team of the above three that have managed to replace the leaving players with anything remotely resembling the same quality. This may force ‘pool to buy someone but right now I would say Wenger looks incredibly astute in his transfer policies.

Interesting, this influx to La Liga from the PL and Serie A. Might help improve competition in the CL and the days of 3 PL teams in the semis could be tough to replicate.

  190. California Gooner

Joe, one downside with Eboue — he is incredibly right-footed. He will never, ever shoot unless he can get the ball onto his right foot. It seems like Daiby is much the same, while Carlos Vela is incredibly left footed.

While Maradona managed to have a decent career using only one foot, I often wonder why professional players do not take the time to develop their ‘chocolate leg’ (thanks RVP for that term)… if you look at RVP’s game, it has benefited hugely from his confidence in moving the ball onto his right foot when needed. TH14 was truly two-footed and… well, the results speak for themselves.

  191. I like Eboue too, think he is versatile and a solid reserve right back/midfielder. I suspect that any move away from the club will be instigated by the player himself, who looks at those in front of him in the pecking order and sees limited playing-time. If our recent injury record in the past couple of seasons is anything to go by, I think he would still get a lot of playing time, but if everybody stays fit I could see him struggling to be a regular starter.

  192. Shotta is 100% correct. This is high stakes poker. Whinging about “Wenger told a lie”…OF COURSE he tells lies. It’s his freakin’ job.

To lie, manipulate, wheel, deal, and pull every trick he can for the purpose of managing

    the team
    the players
    their agents
    the fans,
    the press,
    the board,
    the governing bodies,
    the other teams,
    their boards,
    their managers,
    their business agents,
the public image of the club,
    the club brand,
all to the tune of hundreds of million of pounds.

Accept that we know precious little about what’s going on behind the club doors.

  193. By the way, just saw the highlights of the MLS all-star game against Everton. Freddie’s penalty was crap!

  194. California Gooner

BTW, the news on Hleb going on loan to Stuttgard is puzzling. I went over to Sport, Barca’s house stooges, and there was an article on back-up options in the midfield, particularly during the time YaYa is away in Africa. I thought about how well Hleb ran our midfield when pressed into service…

Something is strange at Barca. Eto’o is better than Ibrahimovich (IMO), yet they spend 40 million on top of the swap. Hleb is almost certainly better than anyone they will get in as a back-up midfielder, and yet they send him off on loan. I still can’t figure out what went wrong between him and Pep. Maybe it’s simply a language issue?

  195. Maybe Pep speaks too loudly for Alex’s delicate lugs?

  196. Wenger’s interview:

    “Kolo wanted to go”

“Of course we do not make money to put it in the banks”

“We are looking at a few possibilities to strengthen the squad. We will only do it for players who are worth to spend the money on”

Can we now say that the boss has shipped out to players who wanted shitty’s money and we were not desperate to keep and that in the process have developed a massive war-chest for future investment?

As arseblogger noted earlier, who apart from shitty or madrid has really spent any money? Not even the chavs and manure and liverpool are skint with debt, not use. Wenger remains a genius.

  197. California Gooner — I think Hleb was bought before Pep became manager. It could be that he just didn’t fit into Guardiola’s plans and Hleb decided to go back to Stuttgart (instead of Inter) to be guaranteed a first-team place?

I am also puzzled by spending over-the-top on Ibrahimovic. Don’t get it, unless there was pressure on Barca to spend big in light of Madrid’s spending?

  198. Protests at the Emirates…lol.

You would hamstring the manager and give leverage to the Uzbek theif at the gates to satisfy the petty urge to know what is going on behind the doors?

That’s like a 5 year old who gets no tea because he’s to fidgety to sit still and let mum make it for him…

  199. Hleb was truly rubbish every time he played for Barca, saw them a lot and he disgraced himself frankly, became something of a running joke in spain.

Barca had to do something in the market to appease the fans after madrid went nuts. Etto was out of contract next year and they didn’t fancy paying him what he wanted until the age of 33 so had to ship him on. Surprised they didn’t get Villa though. Ibra is highly regarded in this part of the world.

  200. I propose an uninterrupted 90 mins of “There’s only one Arsene Wenger!” this Saturday and Sunday.

  201. Can anyone confirm the stats on another blog this morning that had toure winning only 44% of headers last season and being 27th in the league in tackle success %?

  202. How long before Appy Arry is claiming to be interested in Hleb!

  203. California Gooner

Given what we know are Hleb’s qualities, do you really think he turned rubbish overnight or was it just bad form? I’m sure Ibra is very good, but has accomplished what Eto’o has? Will he be cheaper? Does spending 50 million somehow save them money? Do fans of a club that just won the triple really need to be appeased?

  204. arsenehollis – I saw those stats on SSN last night, if memory serves they seem about right.

I saw Hleb the few times he played last season for Barca as well and he was pants. Don’t know about Ibra, only saw glimpses of him in the Champions League last year and wasn’t overly impressed. I think Eto’o is quality, but as you say he is getting on in age and, from the anecdotal reports in the press, not too sure about his attitude. Although Ibra’s attitude seemed a bit suspect as well. Interesting to see how it works out.

  205. Caligooner – hleb wouldnt be the forst player taken out of the arsenal system that looked worse playing for another side – the pass and move team game and wenger’s coaching brings out the best in players.

The season before he left aside, how good was hleb really for the gunners? goals and assists were nonexistent pretty much, but at barca he even seemed to lose technique and composure, you would guess with his confidence.

  206. Gris Gris @ 4:38 good stuff about Eboue.
    Where’s Walcott, BTW?

  207. California Gooner — I’m not sure they signed Ibra to appease the fans, but I think it is a face thing between Barca and Madrid. As much as Barca want to grow their own players (a la Arsene), it must be galling for them to see Madrid spend all that money. I reckon they think Ibra will bring something new to the team, which we will find out soon enough.

  208. California Gooner

The posting yesterday that Arsenal would buy De Rossi and Villa seemed truly preposterous and could remind one of the worst ‘football manager’ kind of rants (buy everyone!).

However, in something of a football-manager like exercise, I got to thinking about how a squad spends money. Do you buy 10 youth? Four strong players? Or one super-class player? Given that Arsenal already has lots and lots of youth and has strong players all over the pitch, I actually think it makes more sense now to spend money on a super-class player, someone who is a clearly un upgrade from the players we have… In other words, I could see Wenger doing something big.

  209. A sudden and surprise pre-season appearance of BTWs!

  210. California Gooner

Lichie, agreed. The stated reason for moving Eto’o was to ‘freshen up’ the squad and make sure they don’t become complacent. Fair enough, although I have never seen Eto’o himself be complacent. But spending 40 million to get a player of equal or perhaps lower value on the pitch strikes me as madness. It would have been a lot more fun to watch Barca do nothing and then stuff Madrid again on the pitch.

Arsenholis, Barca basically invented pass and move, so I can’t see why Hleb can’t play with them. As far as I can tell, it is just the case that big club with lots of money can afford a certain amount of silliness and still win. Barca do a lot of things right, but their dealings in the transfer market seem to swing between sublime and ridiculous.

  211. I just think Hleb’s confidence went a bit. 2 seasons ago in November i remember thinking that at that point he was the best player in the world.

    The only constant is change.

  212. I think Wenger would buy a super-class player (like Arshavin) if he could get one at the right price. But he won’t pay above the odds for a player.

  213. Cali,

Eboue is regarded as versatile because he can play the wing and defender roles.

Wenger obviously doesn’t rate him as highly in defense otherwise he would have been left there and Sagna wouldn’t have been bought.

But even in a supporting role, despite being stripped by malouda last season when he reverted back, what was really telling is how someone of his experience was not accommodated against manu in the CL semis when gibbs ended up playing. Now I know Gibbs is left footed, and highly rated, but even so, I’d have thought that the back four would have been juggled to accommodate someone of Eboue’s experience against Ronaldo and Rooney et al. Eboue after all has played in a CL final! Arsene obviously thought differently.

Similarly, when he plays the wing role, you rightfully point out that he is great to track back and get forward, provides quality crosses at times – but he just cannot score! And you also mention the point about bringing Vela / Wiltshire through.
So really, a winger that can’t score…..a right back that the manager doesn’t trust as first choice at the highest level…..and we’re being offered big money for him….???? As you say, in some respects his versatility may have operated against him!

Then consider it from his perspective too. Maybe he’s not happy being the versatile squad player. Maybe he want’s more regular football. Maybe he’s had enough of the despicable abuse he ships from our so called “fans” which understandably results in his lack of confidence at times.

A move away might well be a good one for the player too!

I really felt for him when he was booed off the field in tears that shameful day at the grove.

  214. Who are the super-class players? And in what position (California Gooner) do you think he should play?
For me Ibrahimavitch has always been more hype than class. Hunterlaar too.

  215. I just don’t see many “super” class players on the market right now. Maybe, Melo was that level. Most mentioned are just over-hyped.

  216. What’s this rubbish about a protest? A joke, surely.

  217. California Gooner

Lichee, no he won’t. But sometimes you should above the odds. If I need to get to New York I shop around for the best airfare. But if that amazing girl I met last summer in Europe happens to be visiting New York this weekend, I put up and pay what I have to (assuming I have the money).

Buying a star for a ramshackle team makes no sense. But this year it feels like all the pieces are basically in place. Win and they will stay in place for the foreseeable future. Come close but fall short, and we could start losing pieces as Cesc, Arshivin, Clichy, and everyone else will be linked with transfer’s next summer. Now i happen to think that we can win it all with the squad we have, so I am hardly a doomer. But I do feel that Wenger would do better to spend on one top-class player instead of a few good ones.

  218. Re: Eboue

Goal.com just posted an article regarding Fiorentina and their plans. While the director didn’t mention Eboue specifically, he did say that transfers are imminent. Regarding these transfers:

“There is still considerable distance [regarding these transfers]. For arguments sake, let’s say they want €10 million, but I only want to give €5m and will not move from that position. I confidently expect they will arrive, but if not than others will come.”

Not saying what price would be appropriate for Eboue, but 5MM euro would be a joke of an offer. I can’t believe Wenger would let him go for relative peanuts.

  219. The so called ‘protest’ is from a truly incredible (in a bad way) blog called Arsenal Action.

Absolutely amazing post by the fool today.

  220. California Gooner

Joe, I guess we basically agree regarding Eboue. But I think he might just start scoring, and I think he does more than simply cross the ball. His little heel-flicks are often sublime. His defense is good when he is challenged one on one by a player such as Robinho or Ronaldo. I suspect that is because such players force him to focus completely and lack of focus is his big weakness.

As for world class, I put both the players mentioned in the post — De Rossi and Villa– in the category. With our midfield, I could see Villa scoring 40 goals. But then I could see Eddie doing that too. So I’m not sure there’s a need. De Rossi, on the other hand, is a physical beast and a fantastic passer as well (what Diaby could be if only he could get it all together). However, he is a Roman boy, and like Aquillani and Totti, I suspect he will spend his whole career there. Senna would be both world class and is old enough to leave the door open for Denilson, Song or Diaby in a couple of years time. I wonder if he could adjust to the pace of the English game, however. So, in the end, I don’t know.

Melo was not tip top class. At least there was nothing to make me think he is. Had anyone really heard of him before he was linked with us?

  221. I was tempted to have a look, Matt. But then stopped myself just in time.

  222. They want to protest even before they know what Wenger is going to do? Incredible!

Why are some men so eager to admit that they are ruled by their cocks? Get some pride, for God’s sake.

  223. Oh Jesus, Arsenal Action is the daftest, most deluded thing i’ve ever read. I thought it must be a wind-up until I realised how much of this nonsense he spouts. This can’t be the work of a grown adult. I daren’t even look at their forum.

  224. We just need two good players, one in midfield and the other in a forward position.

Others will say our midfield is okay and we don’t need to buy. The combo of Song, Fab4 and Denislon is not good to win us anything. They are too short and immobile because of lack of pace. Apart from Cesc, the rest are afraid to give long and incisive passes else they go astray. That midfield also lack height to fight the long ball merchants.

Song/Denilson/Diaby are still learning and have a long way to go to be a title-winning midfield.

    Its the weakest midfield ever if we compare Vieira/Petit, Vieira/Gilberto, Vieira/Fabregas, Fabregas/Flamini, Flamini/Gilberto, Vieira/Edu, Grimandi/Vieira and Edu/Gilberto.

The reason for a striker is the fitness of our current forwards. RvP is injury prone, Rosicky is and Eduardo is not fit enough to battle through 35-40 games a season. Bendtner, great but still learning.

Arsene don’t need a buck-up for Eboue. AW will have to promote from within to support Sagna. Coquelin, Gilbert, Lansbury,Eastmond and Hoyte have all played there and any of them can step up to be a revelation and emulate Gibbs.

We just need two players, a striker and a DM. The GK position seems to be sorted because I can see Sczecny (very good prospect) challenging both Fabianski and Mannone and even Almunia.

We have 6 CB’s and if one goes we will still have four to struggle for the two positions so we’re covered there.

Its the DM and striker position that we reinforcements.

  225. Matt,

I am 100% certain that Arsenal Action is run by a spud on a wind up. It is different from other blogs like LG etc who are autored by bloggers who are misguided and a bit thick. This one is purely written to take the mickey and wind up fans.

  226. Oh dear god………Why didn’t I think of that? A protest is all we ever needed.

  227. I think you are right Alex – i couldn’t help but reply to the fool today.

    I must rise above it.

    DNFTT.

  228. Good points Shotta-Gunna. People tend to forget that football is a business as well. Despite what might feel about the Ade and Kolo transfers they are both exceptional bits of business that are beneficial for the club as a whole.
I don’t agree that it is bringing through players from the youth system is Wenger’s strength, in fact not many players have come through.
Wenger is an genuis at buying very young players with potential and unearthing unknown diamonds like Freddie, Kolo, Sagna, etc.

  229. That blog is the most obvious wind-up since Le Grove. Right now they’re out-stupiding the kings of silly. Just ignore his digital swine flu.

  230. theBigM,

Cashley, Kolo, Clichy, RVP, Cesc, Gibbs, Walcott….players who’ve come through the yoof system.

  231. I’ll give you cashley and gibbs, but the others were picked up from other clubs:

    Walcott- Southampton
    RVP – Feyernood
    Clichy – Cannes
    Kolo – AFC Mimosas

They were bought young and developed by Wenger. This is what he is a genuis at

  232. Senderos, Djourou and Bendtner are also former academy players

  233. Not a lot of difference between folks coming up through the academy or buying them at 18 and developing them further. However it’s done, it’s working.

Bored at work, folks. Anyone care to freshen up a realistic list of potential DM purchases? Can’t we start seeing Veloso’s name pop up again?

  234. TheBigM, you make it sound like it is entirely Wenger’s fault that players have not come through the youth system. The standards are very high to be part of the first team here so it takes talent and the right mentality to succeed. Until this current generation, the raw materials were not there. Now we have several players around the first team who will make it, if they want it enough, are prepared to fight for it, be patient enough to wait for their chances and take them when they come along.

  235. and Cesc came from Barca’s youth setup

  236. I’m not saying its Wenger’ fault that not many players come through the youth system. I’m saying he is a genuis at buying young players or unknown players and developing their potential.
The latest crop of youth players might change this though

  237. theBigM,

What does the youth system mean? The academy? Or the international scouting system that finds the best kids world wide and develops them?

You can’t tell me Clichy didn’t come through the youth system at Arsenal because he did. He just didn’t come through the academy.

The state of the academy is another matter. It wasn’t much of an academy, and Liam Brady has done a fantastic job that we’re now best or Top3 of the academies in England.

  238. By your logic, even Gibbs was picked up from Crystal Palace

  239. Matt. I had intended to put a team in your fantasy league and one in my grandchildrens league, unfortunately i have put them both in yours, is it possible to remove the fancy Dans or Am I stuck with them both

  240. Arsenal Action- looked at the blog once. Isn’t it Howard’s blog, the one he said he’d start to drive Arsene out?

  241. Toure has been a good servant .

I remember when he first came and it seemed he could play every position!

    RVP for captaincy anyone?

  242. I mean the academy, players like Cole who signed for Arsenal first and were not brought in from another club.

  243. Gibbs actually started life at Wimbledon and came to Arsenal when they moved out to Milton Keynes.

theBigM, I think you are splitting hairs – under 16 players learn the basics – technique and game play. If they come to Arsenal at 16 and Arsene & co. polish those rough diamonds into finished gems it is the same thing. Academy players at Arsenal are usually coached by the youth team coaches and Arsene then puts the finishing touches on them when they are ready as he is currently doing with Gibbs and Wilshere. The fact that some of our players spent their formative years at overseas academies does not really take away from his achievement in my opinion.

  244. But that’s not the all the youth system is. The youth system includes everything, and it’s been a smashing success in bringing players through.

  245. As far as youth sytem, how many players have come through youth systems period, especially when you think of Man U, Pool and Chelsea?

Anyway the future looks bright and to think there could come a time when our off season activities as far as players will most probably and mostly come from within.

    Excellent stuff by Arsenal!

  246. Oh woe is us oh woe is us…….

Fook me! Hve you seen some of the shite out there???

    Sooooo predictable…..

Arsenal Action is a legend… seriously, what a blog that is!

Oops, did i say legend? Typo, apologies, I mean, what a c*nt!

  247. Saw the Kolo press conflab on SSN, Kolo was very respectful, even with the Sky hack trying to get Kolo to say we were crap now, also rans, mid0table mediocrity, etc… you know? spuds!

  248. Glad to hear that Spike – especially given that he has wanted to leave for some time, he managed to behave professionally throughout. It certainly makes the parting easier knowing that he wanted to go. He probably needed to go for his own sake as maybe he has got stale at Arsenal and the change will ‘freshen up’ the squad. At least everyone who remains really wants to be part of what is going on here.

  249. Yeah, Passenal, he refused to drawn into slagging the club off, kudos to him, he is a legend!

  250. Yes Toure is a real gentleman! NUFF RESPEK DUE!

  251. He made a mistake and said Man U City, ha ha!

  252. Thanks for the link Paul N, but I cannot bear to watch it. I don’t even want to see ex-Arsenal players in their new shirt in the early days until I have time to adjust to the new reality!

  253. @ theBigM

I agree with others that only taking into account players who have come through the academy from age 9 is making an artificial distinction; however, assuming you do want to make it, bear in mind that two first-team players a year from the Academy would be considered a fantastic return. So we are halfway there with Wilshere! And a couple of others are hot on his heels.

  254. Yes, its hard Passenal!. Even though he has gone he is a pleasure to listen to. Class, pure class!!

  255. Atleast listen until you hear him say Man U City, that should ease a little of the pain.

  256. No Paul, I can’t even listen either – the feelings are too raw at the moment!

  257. Paul N;

I thought he said; “Money City”

  258. I know, I felt really bad yesterday, still hurt but as you say its not as bad knowing that he wanted a move.

    feel better!

  259. that could be it spike! ha

  260. Spike, I heard Mad City.

  261. Money 4U City?

  262. If Eboue leaves, I’m not sure we will buy cover for Sagna. We could devote our resources to strengthen other areas. In my opinion, one of Coquelin, Hoyte or Djourou will fill in for Sagna in case he is unavailable/ rested.

  263. I listened to the first 5 mins or so, till Mark Hughes started talking, when I had to switch it off.

Bittersweet moment – his dignity, his professionalism and the assured way he handles the reporters’ leading questions makes you proud…and then you remember he’s not one of ours any more. But it did sound as if he could see that he would be sold sooner rather than later, and decided to make the best of it while he still had a lot to give.

  264. The Kubler-Ross model of 5 Stages of Grief may help some of you guys understand your feelings about Kolo. Just do a Wiki.
Acceptance will come – soon enough.

  265. Of course it is bad to see players leave, especially one’s like Kolo, who have been with us for such a long time.

But looking at it from an objective (OK, OK, as objective as a Gooner could be!) point of view, I dont think the team/squad is any weaker, which the media are at pains to state otherwise, hence their rabid desire to get any ex-player to come out and say how fooked we are.

We sold Ade and have Rosicky, Arshavin and Eduardo and Simpson. We sell Kolo and have Vermeallen and Senderos and Song (who is a top CB as well as a midfielder)

So, we are in fact, stronger even with the departures….

Stick that up your arse SSN, Daily mail, Daily Mirror, Sun and Usmanov sycophants and lackeys!

  266. Shotta;

I think I am just about there now, thanks!

  267. Just ready for the season to start, I am feeling much better today.

    NO FEAR!!

Onto the Emirates Cup, lets win that and take the PL by storm!!!

  268. Spike, I’m not bothered about that aspect as I know Arsene will find a way of compensating for the loss. It’s more about the personal aspect of saying goodbye to a good player and a good person. Shotta, don’t worry, it’s my business to know all about the stages of grief, and acceptance does not come the day after a loss. Arsene and Kolo had their reasons and since I believe that everything happens for a reason I will wait to see the greater plan unfold.

  269. True, Passenal, true. I’ve heard of people grieving over a failed relationship for a week, and a death for over a month.

  270. For those who think I make up the racist angle in certain Arsenal fan, and other fan attitudes to African players:

    http://www.arsenalinsider.com/?p=5629

  271. Passenal;

    Are you a counsellor?

  272. Passenal;

I think I have kinda been getting used to Kolo’s exit since he handed in the transfer request and him and gallas had their tiff.

  273. I think when it comes bringing players through the academy system, Sir red Nose has a better record.

Apart from his greats, the Nerville brothers and the Giggs’ group, you can name Fletcher, O’shea, Brown and John Evans. These are players who came from the Manu academy so this must not be washed away. Seems Manu has a better record than us, regarding players playing regularly for them.

  274. Ah, Spike, are you going to reveal yourself as an anger management counsellor?

  275. Ole;

Very surprised about Arsenal Insider allowing that kinda shite. I like what Fab the king posts and arsenehollis too!

  276. What kind of counselling could help Truly AFC?

I’ve heard the Dignitas clinic has been effective in cases like his.

  277. TrulyAFC;

I would put it more down to the youth coaches and Brian Kidd, rather than Ferguson tho.

  278. Recently I’ve also seen a new guy on the block, Gibson. The problem is, we’re rather developing so many foreign players who at the end of the day don’t stay but wish to leave at the least opportunity.

  279. Polizi;

No, my friend, I am Nun. Used to be a bouncer though.

Old habuts die hard I guess.

  280. Truly madly racist;

Youn talk a lot of sense, where can I sign up to your newletter?

  281. So, Truly AFC, do you think Arsenal ought to run a boarding academy?

  282. I actually feel sick no more OG no more.

  283. Ole

Cretins are ten a penny online if you care to look for them, blogs like that are not worth the power your computer consumes looking for them.

Two old sayings spring to mind when looking at that rubbish

    1) There are exceptions that prove any rule.

    And

    2) You cant polish a turd, and Arsenal insider is a prime example of both.

Don’t give him credence by publicising his foul rubbish

  284. Truly AFC,

Well, now we have a much better academy than theirs. Sometimes it’s a generational thing. You get a good group of kids….or you get a bad group and your coaching can’t turn them into diamonds

  285. Yes, Henry, Vieira, Clichy, Kolo (sorry passenal) all left after 5 minutes didn’t they?

And the money driven lazy foreigners we have just waiting to fuck off from our youth team, just makes my blood boil!!!

  286. Not quite, but I have gained some counselling knowledge and skills over the years which are important in working with people.

Truly AFC, I don’t pay too much attention to what SAF does, but there are plenty of Arsenal trained players around the leagues who are good, but not good enough, or were too impatient to wait for their chances. Maybe SAF was fortunate to have players who know their limits and don’t expect to displace world class players in their position. None of his recent academy players are ‘stars’ – they are all squad players at best.

  287. I am full of shit, generally, but I am fully qualified to state that we will have 4 or 5 of the current FA youth winners in the 1st team in no time at all….

  288. Passenal;

Sorry for being nosey, but I was just curious.

  289. My 9.04 pm post was in answer to Spike’s query! I see it got overtaken by the responses to Howard’s new alter ego.

  290. Not that good though are they?

  291. @ OG
I read that article and I was shocked.

    *****
    @ Spike

I’m at the acceptance stage now, too.

But the sense of bereavement that Maria and Passenal and others still feel is not just about the man personally, I think. It’s also what his departure represents – the end of the era of the one-club player, the last of the Invincibles, evidence of (necessary) managerial ruthlessness, removal of certainties – that has made it so bruising for those who are in mourning.

In two years time we will be ahead of everyone as we see Gibbs, Wilshere, Lansbury, Coquelin, Sczecny, Bartley,Ayling and others coming through but at the moment Manu is ahead.

  293. “removal of certainties”

    Excellent point.

  294. For most of my Arsenal supporting years Kolo was there….now only AW remains constant.

  295. Ateeb,

I’m at the suppression stage. I don’t accept it but I won’t dwell on it.

  296. So Spike is a Bouncing Nun. What, couldn’t you be bothered to take the Flying Nun exams?

  297. Truly AFC,

Who’s the most recent player to come through their system and become established in the squad, and when?

You’re talking about the past. The reality is that their academy is not bringing anybody through these days and Ferguson himself has admitted it.

  298. I think if I really believed Kolo was on the way out I would be nearer to acceptance now, but it actually came as a surprise to me. PV4 was always my favourite ‘invincible’ but I took his departure better, and I was less surprised when he left. It probably helped that the others I cared about went to clubs in Europe, so it was less ‘in your face’.

  299. Passenal

So you’re saying it still doesn’t feel real?

  300. Yes, we will have a better record than themin two years time.

Currently, we have Wilshere coming through and now considered to be first teamer.

We also have hope in Lansbury, Ayling, Frimpong, JET, Sanchez Watt, Boateng, Chuke Aneke and Eastmond all players who started at age 9 at Hale End.

  301. I have to say, watching that interview made it very real for me!

  302. Toure had always been my favourite invincible. That smile had be at the line up.

  303. Guys,

I’ve been reading a lot of Arsenal blogs in the last year or so, and this is the first one that actually made me interested in joining the discussion.

After reading comments on Le-Grove I basically stopped reading blogs ’cause I’ve got the feeling that to many morons have internet access these days. I don’t really care about Manure, Chelsea, or Looserfool blogs, but it makes me wonder, do they have as many glory-hunting-plastic dumba***s as we do?

  304. Oh no, FG, it’s real enough, I was just less prepared than I realised until it happened.

  305. Oh and NO video for me!!!

Till i we play MC i will be avoiding seeing him everywhere i can.

But i did see one picture was like seeing someone for the first time watching him with dirty durttttty Mark ‘i played for braca’ Hughes……eeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!

  306. Veska,

YES!!!!!, that’s what fills their stadium especially Chelski fans…..everyone i seem to meet supports the ‘pride da landan’.

  307. Oh and NO video for me!!!

Till i we play MC i will be avoiding seeing him everywhere i can.

But i did see one picture was like seeing someone for the first time watching him with dirty durttttty Mark ‘i played for braca’ Hughes……

  308. The acadamy is not only for players to reach the 1st team but also for selling and making a profit. That money is then used to buy the needed players for the squad.

Truly AFC (Patrick, et al) do you just search Arsenal.com for names to post? You probably rarely watch any of them.

  309. You mean they call Chelski the “pride da Landan”?

Pfft! Where’s the pride in buying titles? Eh?

  310. Ole Gunner

Our academy is getting better and better but at the moment they also have John Evans and Gibson coming through. Evans deputised for Ferdinand and Vidic on few occassions last season and Gibson seems to be at the door as our Wilshere.

We will do far better than them in a few years time, 2010/11 season will see at least 3 players in the first team beside Wilshere.

  311. I think by Sept 1st, we will have to put the entire youth teamers in the 1st team as they will all have been sold to Money City!

We’ll soon see how good they are won’t we.

  312. I don’t understand the people who come on here saying “oh we need this, oh we don’t have that, blah blah blah”

Maybe you’re right. Maybe you’re wrong. Time will tell.

But non-the-less have some fucking faith in your club. If the club feels we have needs then they will address them. I sware some “supporters” think we are purposely trying to fuck up. Saying things like “oh buy XXXXX then we will win” is immature and foolish. Creating a football team is a delicate, and complex task that requires great knowledge, wit, and most importantly patience. Those who feel compelled to complain are not supporters but are simple minded fans.

I live in America, far away from most football fans, and I would like to think that other supporters of my club feel the same way as me. We support Arsenal for the way their football makes us feel, for the brilliance and beauty we’ve see in the clubs displays over the years.

Some people sound like loonies talking about the apocalypse.

The sky is not falling, the sun isn’t imploding, we are Arsenal FC.

  313. Harry"s twitch

Wenger said at the end of the season the aim was to keep the squad together.Well that was a lie as Kolo said his move was planned 6 months ago,

Arsene do us all a favour and be honest with us.When was the last season we kept the squad together?2004

We have lost 2 players with Eboue next. The squad is now 3 players short (with fitness doubts over Rosicky and Eduardo) we need to replace these players

I dont want to see that clown Silvestre playing again for Arsenal he is hopeless. And Denilson or Song holding back the great Cesc.

  314. Truly AFC

Do a proper count. How many of their academy graduates who are not already established are close to getting into their first team? Which ones are realistic contenders for positions other than Evans.

You can’t count the likes of O’Shea & Fletcher because they’ve been in the first team squad for 5 years at least.

  315. Harry’s twitch, if Wenger had said that we were going to sell Ade & Toure do you think we would get 40 million for them?

  316. Better still just list those coming through in the last 2 seasons.

  317. Steve,

I don’t know. We might have gotten more.

  318. What a lot of nonsense Harry’s twitch. Can you really imagine at the end of the season Arsene announcing “I intend to sell the following players for the following reasons and I plan to replace them with the following players, regardless of whether they are available or not”? You should be embarrassed to post such immature garbage.

  319. Ole Gunner

I’m not a fan of Manu so I don’t know those coming through, I only know of players I’ve seen.

I’ve seen Gibson play in midfield as a DM and I found him to be capable of breaking through, same I believe they also think Wilshere is an England prospect.

In fact I met Chavski chaps who were all over Gibbs, that Gibbs will replace Cole in the upcoming World Cup for England.

That’s all about that, a fan admiring another club’s player but nothing else. My information on Manu is scanty, in fact, I don’t even care about them.

  320. Ferguson said he wouldnt sell Real a friggin Virus! Big deal. Funny how certain Goons get all sensitive about what Wenger says or doesnt say when they want a stick to beat him with, yet feel no compunction when it comes to completiely slating young players and the manager hiimself, for that matter…

Ade has gone, so that allows the likes of vela and maybe Theo tom get more game time upfront.

Kolo has left and probably has wanted to since January, in that case, i would say vermeallen is his direct replacement.

All good. Not saying we wont see any more sigings, but I think the negative spin the media are insisting on pumping out and the fact a few pathetic twats on blogs are biting, shouldnt be taken as fact that we are f**ked.

  321. The only thing I know about Man Utd is that they’re not as good as Arsenal.

  322. these tamazi’s aint working…im still pissed off!!!

  323. Here DukeG;

Im on the Vikadins… Im numb as f((k, have a few of mine!

  324. Spike,

Ineed sfukin someting coz it is so fukin depressing seing quality players leave , especially to join our rival.

The thing about Arsenal is they show no determination to keep players. if you worked for someone and someone else came in and your boss said fuck off i need that man it would make you feel good and want to stay but when someone comes in for our players Wenger shows absolutly no resistance and gives the player a sign of unwantedness, we could have kept Ade , Toure and Eboue if Wenger wanted but he didnt.

  325. DukeG;

I fell you bro (not like that!) But I honestly dont see it like that. Last summer I was depressed about the team after seeing players leave and none come in to replace them.

The players we have lost, have already been covered, for me and we also have the likes of Rosicky and Arshavin and the new boy vemeallen.

City aint our rival, they are a freak, full of individuals on obscene wages that will look good for 3 months then implode!

  326. well yes as long as Sparkless is in charge they are not a rival.

Im still optimistic of a good season but if we kept these players the title was on for sure now im not so sure. well im sure as hell not sure about being sure.!!!!

    aarrrr..the tamazi’s kicking in!!!!

  327. Haha!

I know, I know, I should NOT take any notice of media speculation and I will probably be shown up as a simple minded optimist, but the thought of Vieira coming back really does make more and more sense to me! Maybe its the bottle of vino, but i think it could be a great signing.

Cue it being shown to be a complete load of shite!

  328. Duke, that is the whole point – Arsene was prepared to let them go or they would still be here. He didn’t let Ade or Toure go until he was ready.

  329. We already have the best team in the league. If Wenger starts spending the money, the mismatch will just become all the greater.

  330. Vino finito, night all

  331. I agree with PZ and Passenal.

  332. okay Passenal but what do you think. Are we better without Ade n toure????

  333. night Spike

  334. so blaise matuidi? there are several reports tonight suggesting that this is gonna happen shortly. all i know is he is five foot nine and 22 years old and plays for st ettiene.

he’s not the experienced head many have called for, so if it happens lets hope he’s fucking good, and offers something different to what we already have.

  335. My greatest wish is that what “many have called for” never happens.

  336. If (big if) blaise matuidi comes in I can only see it as cover for Song during the ACN.

  337. Change of subject. I watched the England U19s today. Lansbury scored a good goal again. Welbeck after an assault by the French keeper maybe singing like a castrato for some time to come. Gavin Hoyte (when he came on) looked very assured at centre half.

  338. yeah i dont want wenger sacked either Poliziano!!

  339. The sacking of Wenger is called for by the few not the many. The Emirates Cup will prove that.

  340. Steve i was taking the piss.

  341. Look at the Guardian. Apparently moves for Matuidi and Vieira forthcoming.

  342. Duke you may have been takin the piss (I read your posts so I know you jest) my point was not about your comment. It was more about the twat calling for a protest.

  343. .last
