Kalou, Boots And Money Men Getting Antsy?

Sunday morning brings the usual suspects as transfer targets and a new boy to boot. Wellington – a headline writers dream if ever there was one – is the latest Wunderkid to be linked with a move to The Emirates, seemingly ready to pick Arsenal ahead of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea. Until Manchester City come in and offer him £250k per week, that is. Elsewhere, Saloman Kalou is like the hardy perennial in your back garden, once more linked with a £7m move from Stamford Bridge. It surely cannot be a coincidence that the same report linking him with a move, also mentions that he is angling for a new contract at Chelsea. No doubt that contract will be signed this week.

The transfer market is used by the media as a benchmark for the financial well-being of a club. Manchester City are rich although heading for a fall if Michel Platini gets his way with punishments meted out for clubs who exceed his plan for a Wages / Turnover ratio to be used as one element of the UEFA Licensing System. Arsenal continually underspend feeding the belief that money is tighter than the club reveals. The transfer budget was set at a ludicrously low £13m this summer in media terms, a figure that has not disappeared. With add-ons, it is so far up to £38m less £8m for Vermaelen. A round £30m.

Were Eboue to leave, that would bring the transfer income this summer to £35m or so. With media targets disappearing off to other clubs at a rapid rate of knots, it is questionable as to how long before there is barracking if Wenger does not spend some of this. No doubt there will be allegations made that the economic situation at Arsenal is considerably worse than the Board is letting on, a backhanded vindication of his Rights Issue plan will be claimed by Usmanov.

It seems that whilst the club has exploited its global image, there is scope for more to be done. You sense that the time is coming when tours will be undertaken in the Far East and America where Chelsea and United receive fees alone in excess of £5m for a fortnight’s jaunt. Wenger has steadfastly rejected calls for Arsenal to follow suit, preferring to travel to Central Europe. Wenger believes that the far-flung tours are detrimental to a teams preparation.

The evidence is totally contradictory since the top four has remained unchanged for the last four seasons with three of them, including the eventual champions, all taking part in such tours. It is a sign of Wenger’s standing that the Board has not imposed such tours unlike their other rivals. Whilst the Manchester United board no doubt hold Ferguson in similar esteem, the Scot has been unable to fight off what might be considered rapacious greed on the part of his paymasters.

Arsene has in recent weeks spoken of recession hitting football. The exceptions of Manchester City and Real Madrid aside, this summer has seen a drop in the number of high value transfers but with over a month to go, that situation may change. Where clubs may find it hard is in commercial revenues. There is no evidence yet of attendances suffering or merchandising dropping but the decision to launch two new away strips this season must be seen as dubious to say the least.

There will be a new home strip next summer, hopefully including a return to red with white sleeves – is it too much to ask that the designers at Nike forgo modernism with a return to the simplicity of the 1970s before pinstripes, pigeon footprints and other ghastly elements entered the design phase? The need for a third kit is highly debatable from a footballing perspective. Unless opponents have a significant element of red / blue in their tops, the all-white third kit is purely a commercial decision since last season’s yellow strip would have sufficed in those situations.

The moneymen needed to fill the void hence the creation of The Emirates Cup to compensate. With all due respect to this season’s participants, the calibre is not what the original idea would have had in mind. A march was stolen by IMG with Barcelona going to Wembley although that only one of the Champions League starting XI took part suggests that the Catalans are not taking it anywhere near as seriously as the sponsors would like.

The three participants all bring differing styles and I guess their own uses from a football perspective but these games are not played at anywhere near the level of intensity of competitive matches which rather undoes the experience of playing against different tactics. Sharpness and fitness are still the only objective. I wonder what the attendances will be like this year though. Rangers will bring supporters to vindicate their place, commercially speaking, but surely one objective should be to attract the best teams in the World to stretch the players that close to the start of the season?

  1. Take that Bob.

    FIRST!!!!

  2. Not too sleepy to take the most coveted prize of them all, Ateeb.

  3. Surely you can have wunderkind or wonderkid, but not wunderkid or wonderkind.

  4. Haha. I don’t know what you’re talking about Pz. The past should be forgotten, with the new article. I’ve moved on, so should you.

  5. I prefer young prodigies to wunderkids or wonderkids.

  6. The “next Zidane”, “next Maldini” or next ” Pele”, is still a better term, to wonderkids. Atleast you know what you’re going in for. And the player knows what’s expected of him.

  7. I was having a bit of a thunk about things recently, and it seems that AW has taken a lot of flack in recent times over “generally accepted truisms”.

What I mean by that is that certain sectors of fans seem to repeat particular desires or thoughts over and over until a fair proportion begin to think these are then indisputable facts.

We saw it with Lorik Cana – a sector of “fans” thought it was an indisputable fact that we wanted and needed him.

The fact is that at 5m, if AW had wanted him, he would have got him, so it seems obvious that he did not.

The media claiming we are interested does not equate to AW actually being interested.

Nevertheless, we had all manner of retards claiming AW was “stubborn”, stupid”, “blind” etc. because he didn’t buy him.

We even had one clown blogger claiming he had seen Cana play “about 15 times” – Somehow I suspect that actually meant he’d replayed the famous youtube video about 15 times.

All of it is beyond ridiculous, and demonstrates just how dumb a certain sector of our fans actually are.

I love these “articles” etc. that make statements along the lines of “the fans aren’t stupid/blind/ignorant etc”.

ROFLMFAO, yes they f%^&*&g well are!!!!

There are many, many recent examples of Arsenal “fans” thinking they know more than AW, and taking media claims about “interest” in players etc as gospel, when they are, more often than not, complete drivel.

I can’t help wondering whether the “need” for a DM is not just yet another example of this.

It seems to have become “generally accepted” by a fair number of fans that this is actually what we need.

Personally I’m not so sure about that.

Yes, we will lose Song during the ACoN, but we do have Eboue, Coquelin and Ramsey, and a few other options too.

Yes, they might be young, but we are talking about back up options, and it seems to escape a number of observers that back up options are not first team regulars.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised or upset if no further purchases were made.

If any do arrive, I’ll take it as a bonus, but I won’t be wailing and howling if none do.

I’d also prefer it if we didn’t sell any more of our regular players either, including Kolo and Eboue.

Nevertheless, I will also accept the decision to do so if it does happen, purely because none of us knows what actually does go on on a day to day basis, so we can’t tell why a player would or wouldn’t be allowed to leave.

Far too many “fans” seem to have decided that they know better than AW.

The fact of the matter is, if they did, they would be successful football managers, so why aren’t they then? (other than on some silly PC game that is).

The perfect example of what happens when fans get too much say in club matters is Newcastle – something to think about.

I see fat & orange is trying very hard to re-insert dein.

I wonder how much of the media barrage we face comes from that sector attempting to foment enough unrest to force the board int accepting dein back?

  8. kaloubelieve it? See what I did there Yogi . Fergies rants in the Sunday papers or should I say the words attributed to him are interesting. Rubbishing Man City as ‘arrogant’. As for the Tevez fiasco , virtually calling him ‘difficult’ and a ‘whinger’. Ade is not spared the red wrath with el Fergie suggesting they turned Ade down prior to signing for Man Shitty. Fergie predicts that of the top 4 , Arsenal will struggle. The git. Sounds like he is scared.

  9. Simply enthralling capture of the Great Brazilian that is Wellington:

  10. “I hope this season every player is responsible with their attitude and in all circumstances. I hope we will be very professional, not just in the games but every day as well.” – Manuel Almunia

H’mm – Now if the fans will play their part.

  11. Spot on post as usual Mike SA. Those Arsenal ‘fans’ shouting about who Arsene should buy seem to have failed to notice how little money is actually being spent. Other than man c and Real mad, man u chelski and ‘pool like us have bought 1 player each. Some may also have added the odd ‘player for the future’ or free agent, but they are hardly splashing the cash. While SAF is commenting on our ability to spend the money from Ade’s sale, he is hoping to draw attention away from the £60m he is not spending to replace Ronaldo or his aging players. Maybe we are not spending because we already have players at the club who are ready to step up. Does that not occur to anyone? Bringing players in from outside is not the only answer.

I usually sit out the silly season and refrain from adding to the nonsense that accompanies the close season however if the link above has any truth to it i’ll be delighted. Lee Cattermole will be a great central midfielder regardless of were he goes, hopefully he can do that as a gooner.

“The media claiming we are interested does not equate to AW actually being interested”….

It does when your world view is shaped by Rupert Murdoch

  14. “Lee Cattermole will be a great central midfielder regardless of were he goes, hopefully he can do that as a gooner.”

    you serious?

on that note il leave you all to it!

  15. Thank you, MikeSA. A long post that is worth reading.

  16. geeGunner

Lee Cattermole is a natural DM not a converted DM. If the rumour is true I will be happy because he will bring in tackling, athleticism and fighting spirit, attributes that we’ve been lacking in the big games.

Kalou will also be a good buy and cheap. He will bring a lot of pace, athleticism and experience in the EPL. He can play in all the positions upfront.

We’ve always been successful with pacy strikers, Henry, Anelka, anyone? AW knows better and can convert Kalou into a great player here, the same way he did for Ade, Henry and Anelka.

  17. I think Arsene enquired about Kalou last summers as well. Don’t know which of Chelsea’s manager claimed that. Was probably that Brazillian….

Whats up Howard, you still predicting 4th position?

  18. There is a great post on Arsenal Insider about Denilson, Song and Diaby:

    http://www.arsenalinsider.com/?p=5539&cpage=1#comment-95782

OG – recommend you read it.

  19. Isnt Toure a natural DM? Didn’t Wenger convert him to central defense.
Why not give him some game time there, couldnt hurt. He may be that new signing we all seem to be craving.

  20. I really like Cattermole, for the same reason I like Denilson & Jay Simpson. Very determined young men who’re not prepared to waste any time in establishing themselves.

But can you, Atom, name instances in which Cattermole has dominated midfield against Shellsey, Man poo or Liverpool, or even Aston Villa or Everton.

    I eagerly await your response.

  21. Nice one MikeSA.

  22. So it’s okay for Arsene to go for potential when the player is English? We have plenty of potential already at the club, so unless the player is more experienced and better than what we already have, what is the point?

  23. Passenal – Your dead right about Fergie’s comments regarding our spending being an attempt to hid ManU’s financial position however I did find his comments regarding Adebayor as interesting. I think that these are true and it confirms, to me at least that Wenger pushed Adebayor out of the club rather than us “losing” a player.

I cannot understand why the press love the Arsenal are broke story when ManU are not spending with huge debts and Liverpool have still not managed to renegotiate their £350 million debt, let alone start work on a new stadium.

If Arsenal cannot service a debt of approx. £400 million with the extra income the Emirates brings in why do they think that Liverpool can service a £350 million debt with the limited capacity of Anfield.

  24. I read that article Muppet, he makes some interesting points, particularly the one about the contribution of the rest of the team to the defensive stability. Flamini gets unfairly lauded because he had the benefit of playing with Rosicky and Hleb, who were both good at tracking back and helping out defensively. Denilson has been expected to do all the midfield defending with little or no support from the rest of last season’s midfield most of the time. If the Arsenal coaches can work on the whole team defending from the front when they don’t have the ball, we will see a significant improvement all round.

  25. gunnerjones,

Kolo Toure like Eboue & Yaya Toure come from an academy that trains their players to play multiple positions. They’re utility players.

Why would we want to move Kolo from defence to midfield?

  26. So, taking the points made by several posters today and over the months concerning the media’s willingness to see the worst in us while ignoring the spots in the apples that are out competitors, why?

I agree with that view by the way. I would like to understand better the reaons.

  27. Muppet – Interesting read. The one thing it doesn’t factor in is that Denilson and Song are playing for a team that has a high rate of possession. If the opposition doesn’t have the ball you can’t tackle them.

  28. Incidentally, I didn’t see Cattermole feature in thise atatistics.

  29. ..statistics..

  30. bradys right foot

Great article Muppet thanks for the Link.

  31. @ MikeSA:
I was going to write a comment, but after reading yours, I see no need whatsoever to write anything less brilliant than you have up there. I know that some so called ‘Arsenal Fans’ will call you an AKB. I suspect though that, like me, you will not mind.

Thank you for a brilliant comment put brilliantly.

  32. True Marc, but for me the most impressive stat is the interceptions – I didn’t realise just how significant the differential was between Denilson and others. You don’t need to tackle as much if you read the game that well and can anticipate where the ball is going, but even then his tackling numbers are not too shabby either.

  33. Passenal – Denilson’s stats were very impressive all round. I just wanted to point out the “obvious” to the “why didn’t we sign him” brigade.

  34. Article read Muppet. Everything he writes is obvious but unfortunately not obvious to enough people.

  35. I came on here to post the link to the Arsenal Insider article and Muppet beat me to it! It would be interesting to compare the defensive stats for each of the first-choice midfielders on 2007/2008 with those of the class of 2008/2009, to see how much tackling and intercepting etc they did in relation to the other members of the midfield at the time. That would confirm the distribution of the defensive burden.

I’ve been watching re-runs of our games on ATVO, and was struck by how rarely the commentators give Denilson a name-check when he regains the ball. It’s as if his contribution doesn’t really register. He’s like good plumbing – you only notice it when it doesn’t work. There’s room for improvement, but PND does an unglamorous job consistently well.

  36. And great comment, MikeSA.

  37. FunGunner – What you say about Denilson not getting the recognition he deserves is similar to what happened with Gilberto. It was only when he got injured that everyone realised what they were missing.

  38. “If the Arsenal coaches can work on the whole team defending from the front when they don’t have the ball, we will see a significant improvement all round.”

But is it a coaching problem? All the players surely know they ought to help win back the ball. When they know a player of the quality of Denilson is there to regain possession, however, perhaps they just grow complacent from time to time. By contrast, all the players must have been conscious that Flamini, howsoever his animal-spirits might be admired, was the least talented senior player at Arsenal for a long time, and so the need to assist him would always have been at the forefront of their minds.

  39. Oh Passenal….he’s like 70 interceptions ahead of the next best midfielder. I think the next best interceptor was Clichy until Gael got injured.

You know what breaks my head is the Mascherano angle. We always hear about why he’s so effective because he intercepts so much, he reads the game well, knows where he needs to be….etc.

But those positives must never apply to Denilson. What miffs me is that Mascherano has won NOTHING, and is actually much smaller than Denilson. He’s 5 ft 7! And he can’t pass or shoot.

So his specialty- i.e. reading the game well, turning up at transition points and winninbg the ball, is not so special compared to this 20 year old in his first season who had to learn on the job.

But it’s proof that he’s great, and proof that the 20 year old is dismal.

Anyway, I’ve given up on Denilson arguments. I think everybody gets it. If Denilson plays like he did last season, he’ll sooner rather than later get the recognition his performances merit.

  40. Brilliant article Muppet.. I think the reason Cesc plays better with Song is because Song allows him to forget his defensive duties.. this natural and unnatural biz is bollocks.. Also amazed at the stat of interceptions which has Deni leading with 155 followed by Marscherano with 85 ..Although Denilson has an incredible engine the fact that he has not played for his senior nationals is part of the reason he was able to play so many minutes with out injury..

    Come On you Arshenal..

  41. Poliziano, I think it was also that Rosicky and Hleb being part of the midfield meant that they were experienced enough to know that, whereas Walcott and Diaby or whoever was filling in did not quite have the same level of awareness. Cesc also knows he needs to contribute more defensively and needs to stop talking about it and do it. He’s not 17 anymore and does not need a ‘minder’ that is disrespecting his ability. I know he’s not fast, but if he is going to play that deep lying playmaker role he should be able to read the game from there and learn to intercept the way Denilson has. It would certainly take his game to a new level.

  42. @ Consolsbob

So, taking the points made by several posters today and over the months concerning the media’s willingness to see the worst in us while ignoring the spots in the apples that are out competitors, why?

Hard to say, Consolsbob. Here are some suggestions, not necessarily in order of importance:

    1) Journalists crave excitement. They love the thrill of reporting big fees and big-name signings. Perhaps they find Wenger’s sustainable, incremental approach dull.

    2) Financial ignorance. Most sport journalists know very little about money, so are unaware of the dangers of the Glazer and Hicks/Gillette models. They have also bought into the borrowing culture in British society, and the notion that the only reason not to spend money is if you don’t have it or can’t borrow it.

    3) Hint of Xenophobia/Red-Nose worship – supporting SAF is supporting an “English” club (I know, I know, but that’s how they see it!) and SAF himself is hugely admired because of his success, they love the way he spends money (see point 1) and he is a “character”, a wily old Scot (not as he in fact is, an arrogant hypocrite).

    4) “Arsenal are Skint” is a narrative that seems to please people. I really don’t know why.

    5) Quite a lot of journalists are Spurs fans.

There are probably other reasons, but I can’t think of them.

  43. Just to be clear, Kolo is not a DM because he can’t do the miles.

IMHO, the problems in midfield and defence last season were to do with instability not quality. Denilson was converting from attacking midfielder to DM. That’s much easier if you know what your teammates are doing. Switching from doing a Flamini impression to pairing up with Alex Song would be confusing even if you knew who was going to be behind him. Kolo was rubbish until well into the new year. Only Mascherano or Essien might be much better and would they fit in with the Arsenal system? With Fab fit enough to go back to his position I expect things to be much better this season.

  44. Ole Gunner

When you say dominating midfield what do you imply? The only person in our team with that ability is Cesc and he needs a contrasting partner to support him. A player who can give him a protective cover and allow him to venture forward to support the attack.

We don’t need somebody who’ll play like him; the team has been build around him and that’s the way it is. It stands to reason that to make the team effective, we need a player to complement him.

Anytime I’ve watched Cattermole I’ve been impressed with his defensive abilities, his passion for the game, his athleticism and his ability to put his foot in. He also exhibit long range passing ability. He’s somebody who is not bullied and fights for every ball.

Cattermole may not be technically great but his power and aggression and his fighting ability is what we need as a support to our great Captain.

He has the ability to just stay behind and clean up and fight for all the lose and 50/50 balls.

  45. Pz and Passenal

I half agree with both of you – I think defensive awareness is partly a coaching/experience issue and partly to do with the natural inclinations of the players. In any case, it’s something that a player can add to his game – it’s just that when push comes to shove, players will tend to do what comes naturally, which is where the natural inclination of the player comes in. What do you think?

  46. Good post, Vivas

  47. Yes Fun. You pretty much have summarised the reasons as I would guess them to be. They are definitely contributing factors on most ocasions and for most ‘journos’.

Don’t you think there must be something more though for the sheer consistency of their ‘one eyedness’. (Apologies to Pz for the liberty with words).

  48. Atom,

Dear Friend, dominate midfield means he’s the most outstanding player in midfield. He’s keeping possession, passing better, tackling better, and dictating the pace of the game.

I’ve seen Denilson do that against Shellsey, Man poo & Liverpool. Never seen Cattermole do it.

The one time the 2 20 yr olds played together last season, Denilson’s Arsenal completely dominated midfield.

  49. Don’t you think there must be something more though for the sheer consistency of their ‘one eyedness’. (Apologies to Pz for the liberty with words).

Sometimes I do, too! But I am coming round to the view that point 4) is by far the most important. Anything that shifts copy or gets hits.

  50. Great Denilson’s stats. however, stats don’t show where his passes went, either backwards or sideways. Stats. also don’t show the number of times he was beaten or bullied by other midfielders.

Great stats but again it didn’t show the times he stood and watched while an opposing player ran through midfield without he tracking back (there was a number of these), stuck upfield.

Denilson is a good player for us to come in when someone is out but a starting player week-in-week-out? That won’t help.

There is a reason Brazil rate Lucas and Anderson ahead of him.

He still needs some years to improve but he’s going to face stiff competition from Coquelin, Frimpong, JET and co.

AW knows best that’s why he was chasing Melo. Fab4 has also cried for a midfield enforcer beside him.

At the end of the day, Arsene knows.

  51. FunGunner, I’m not convinced about that ‘natural position’ business. A lot of players start life in one position and then discover an aptitude for a new position. William Gallas started life as a striker, and maybe his strikers’ instinct is what allows him to be in position to score some crucial goals for us. It might also give him a certain insight into where a striker will attack and thus make him a better defender. No one would suggest that he is not a good defender because he is a ‘natural’ striker otherwise players would never be converted from the position they took up the first time they kicked a ball. I really believe that if they are open to learning players can sometimes discover a hidden talent. Denilson has never been an out and out attacking midfielder as Arsene has always described him as part Gilberto part Rosicky and we know that Rosicky is defensively aware.

  52. Fun Gunner @ 2.37 PM…Comment of the year. Absolutely smashing nailed it. Journalists don’t really know football. The one thing they judge with is money.

9 out of 10 journalists is not able to pull out the Man City teamsheet and lay it by the Arsenal version and see we’re still miles away from them in terms of quality. It’s sad but true.

  53. Can we also get stats.on passes to team mates in forward, sideway and back positions? Equally, number of times beaten by opposing midfielders?

  54. Atom,
Did you by any chance choose a name that would equate to the size of your brain?

  55. Cattermole? No way. That’s signing mediocrity.

  56. Muppet, MikeSa and FunGunner,

Spot on. The influence of the media and proliferation of MB’s (Murdoch’s babes) among our massess replaces reason and true support with irrational jingoism. The Arsenal Insider article gives great grounds for a level of rational reflection that I fear will be ignored by the RB’s.

Such is life. AFC goes on

  57. “Number of times beaten by opposing midfielders?”

The number of tackles shows how often he was NOT beaten. He was fourth best in the league. The only way he could have been beaten more often than other players is if the opposition tried to go past him more often than other players. Since Arsenal generally enjoy most possession, this is unlikely. It would also be rather foolish, since his tackling success rate is fifth best in the league.

  58. @ Passenal

Not “natural position”, “natural inclination”. What I mean is that (regardless of position) some players actively enjoy that part of the game – tracking back, tackling, etc, as opposed to others who do it because they know it’s necessary, or yet others (like Denilson) who have come to love it by learning it. Robin Van Persie is a striker, but I always get the feeling that he takes it as a personal affront if someone nicks the ball and will fight to get it back. Or conversely, there’s the attacking awareness of a defender like Song who instinctively runs into the box because he sees a gap.

One can’t take this analysis too far, I know, but what I meant was that you can coach defensive awareness up to a point, and experience should play its part, but a player who started out with more awareness is always going to be a bit better on that front than one who didn’t.

    @ Atom
There are stats on the direction of Denilson’s passes and around 70% of them (from memory) were forward passes. They were not mostly defence-splitting 40-yard passes, but that’s not his job. His job is to get the ball back and pass it safely.

  59. Dead on the money Passenal.

I always have a chuckle when I see players being described as “natural” defenders, or natural this or that.

I get this vision of a baby being born, and the doctor having to read a rapidly fading tattoo on the baby’s forehead before it disappears, then announcing “he’s a natural defender/striker/winger/AM/CM etc”.

Obviously if the doctor is too slow/not “in the know”, or it’s a difficult birth that takes a bit too long, then this info can be lost to the world, which is when players end up playing out of position.

The famous Ajax academy worked on players learning to play everywhere on the pitch, thus promoting an understanding of what is going on around you.

I recall many observers using Sol as an example of a “natural” defender (as opposed to a “converted” one), seemingly unaware of the fact that he played on the wing up to the age of 16 at sp#rs.

  60. The one that annoys me is the one of criticising the manager for not playing people in their “natural positions”. An idea that’s been outdated since the 1950s but which certain fans-helped by certain high-profile BBC idiots hold on to.

  61. Can I just point out again that I didn’t say, or mean, “natural position”?

    Thanks.

  62. Bahraini Gooner

    MikeSA

Few more fans like you will bring balance to this new trend of i know better than everybody. In fact somehow we have become more like Newcastle. it worries me.

  63. It is nice to come on here and be buoyed by the number of positive comments after once again having my spirit crushed by the way we are portrayed in the press.

I do think there is one more reason we are badly treated by the press.

After the battle of Cannea (or was it lake Trasimene), Hannibal, probably the greatest tactical commander in history, was berated by one of his lieutenants that although he knew how to win a victory he didn’t know how to exploit one because he didn’t march on Rome.

What has this got to do with football?
Well AW stated that his aim was to make Arsenal one of the top 10 clubs in Europe. He has clearly succeeded in that.

But does he now exploit that to the full?

I’m not critisising his transfer policy, rather his demenor in the transfer market, where he constantly talks about us not being able to match the spending of other clubs and sticks by the rules, unlike many other clubs.

I think he does this to try to avoid the inflated prices applied to clubs like Chelsea when they are in the market.

However it only strengthens the opinion of sports journalists who are incapable of understanding the financial figures that Arsenal have no money and need to sell players.

  64. Passenal/Ole Gunner

Can we have a debate here? Do you have to insult me because my views about the player is different from yours?

Are we reading each other as fans or enemies?

  65. It’s not a tattoo, MikeSA. It’s genetic. The Human Genome Project has identified one gene that determines whether a player can play on the left or the right side of the pitch, and a combination of three genes that together give 6 possible positions up the pitch (goalkeeper, defender, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, hole, and striker). The gene that determines the sidedness of a player is particularly interesting. It turns out this is relevant not only to full backs and wingers, but to all positions on the pitch. In the case of the goalkeeper, this presents a tricky problem, since there can only be one. Each goalkeeper can only save shots well on one side of the goal. Further up the pitch, the central defence must consist of one left-sided and one right-sided player. In the centre of midfield, again, one player must be left sided and the other right sided. This is further complicated when one central midfielder is attacking and the other defensive, since tackling in midfield can only be done effectively on one side of the pitch, and attacking on the other. In attack, once more, it is essential to have one left-sided and one right-sided player.

  66. Coach plays you what you look like.

Anderson was an attacking mid fielder at Porto and Gremio .. Red nose noticed he doesn’t ever score and is more adept at barging people so he tries to mould a CM/DM out of him.. This is where I feel Theo should focus on keeping his role in the 11 rather then constantly talking about how he would have been playing as a striker if he wasn’t injured and that he’s waiting for his chance in his “natural role”..

  67. I agree that players don’t have a natural position, although they might have physical attributes that make them more suitable for one position than another. I also agree in part with FunGunner’s thoughts about natural inclination. I would suggest, however, that a large part of the natural inclination is really just the result of custom.

  68. Atom can we have statistics on number of positive comments about Arsenal made by you on this blog?
Oooh, dear, not very convincing. sorry mate you failed in exactly the way Howard and Patrick and 4th the Target have failed before you.

  69. When Walcott says his natual role is as a striker, what he means is that he is most accustomed to playing as a striker (whether he knows it or not). As a striker, he will not have had much opportunity to practise the defensive work that is required of a winger, and so he has not developed an inclination to perform that work. That he could greatly improve that side of his game I have no doubt.

  70. @ JohnN

I’m not critisising his transfer policy, rather his demenor in the transfer market, where he constantly talks about us not being able to match the spending of other clubs and sticks by the rules, unlike many other clubs.

I think he is just telling it like it is, JohnN. He is probably expressing his irritation that given our financial position, our spending OUGHT to be at or very near the top of the tree, but other clubs outspend us by basically cheating.

  71. Sorry FG if I implied that you used the term ‘natural position’. Your question just put me in mind of that term which is often talked about around the place. I recognise that within certain individuals there may be some greater aptitude for one role more than another, but talking about natural positions is limiting, particularly at Arsenal where players are required to be more adaptable and well rounded in their game.

  72. Atom, perhaps you should give us the stats. You seem to know how many times everyone under the sun runs past Denilson. Please tell us how many times other players loose the ball, or were stuck everywhere, upfield or not, all across the top four please?

It seem that you (an others who agree with you) are only able to notice DMs when they bully or break legs. Understanding of their role and the part which others need to play to enhance it, counts for nothing where you guys are concerned.

It doesn’t suprise me, though. Arsenal fans held the same arguments against Gilberto until he wasn’t in the team for a run of games. Thats when they truely undrstood the role he plays.

The problem last season was not Denilson or even Song or Diaby. It was a proper defensive awareness failure by the whole team. After all it is a team sport, remember?

  73. Atom, I have not previously addressed you never mind about insulting you. If you can point me in the direction of the post in which I singled you out with an insulting remark, I will apologise.

  74. @JohnN

Sorry, just realised that was more or less what you said!

  75. Neither have I insulted you. Seeing things, Atom?

  76. Backwards, forwards, sideways, up or bloody down,
I don’t care. The fact he (Denni) invairibly keeps possession is the key. Barcelona won the CL playing exactly this way, where is the slagging for Iniesta’s crab-wise skills.

They also proved the point that its a whole team thing going on, not one lad in the middle…….

    Give me strength.

Muppet, MikeSa, FunGunner, CB, Passenal and OG. Very much enjoying the great posts.
    YW as always…………

  77. celtic 2 -spuds nill so far

  78. Ole Gooner

A question for you in the two biggest games of last season, the CL semi finals where was Denilson?

On the bench thats where.Remember Arsene Knows

  79. Listen to this interview on the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00ltrc6/Sportsweek_26_07_2009/

Don’t just ignore the outrageous poor journalism from Davies, and the nonsense from Usmanov’s pawn. At some point what comes out is that Usmanov’s camp is taking talking points from some blogs.

  80. Alan Alan,

What a silly point. Where was Arshavin in those two games? Heck, where was Eduardo in those 2 games?

    Arsene knows.

  81. The spuds look lumbering. Huddlestone is almost their smallest player these days. Apart from lemmon they all think and move at two miles an hour. ‘andsome ‘arry could be the one to take them down.

  82. @ Alan Alan

Lots of possible reasons for that. Denilson’s form could have dipped. (I’m sure you know the saying about form and class.) Wenger could have noticed that he was tired and not wanted to risk an injury to him. It could have been a tactical decision. That’s why we have a squad, so that we can rotate as needed. Great that you agree that Arsene knows, btw. Welcome to the AKB.

  83. Consolsbob, apparently they are set to profit from our ‘vulnerability’ and overtake us!

  84. It’s true, Alan Alan, we got to the Champions League final without any help from Denilson.

  85. What channel are the Spuds on?

  86. Newsflash

It has been reported in the Spanish press that AW has placed a bid for Huntelaar

I’ve not watched himmuch but can he do a good job for us?

  87. Apart from lemmon they all think and move at two miles an hour.

    lol
couch potatoes all. Crouch potatoes even.

  88. fun gunner

  89. Sky sports 1, Fun.

Nice to see Tony Mowbray doing well

  90. Thanks, Kitchen Sink and Consolsbob

  91. Poliziano

My point is if Denilson is as good as some on heer think he is why didnt Arsene play him in the two CL semis.

    Any answers?

    Atom

Huntelaar is an out and out finisher. If Ade could get 24 leagues goals for us Klaas will get 30 as he is a better finisher than Ade

  92. oh yess
watching Samaras run from just inside his half to score against the spuds bring warmth to my heart..

  93. Alan Alan,

Why did Wenger not play Arshavin in the same games? Any answers?

  94. @ Alan Alan

My point is if Denilson is as good as some on heer think he is why didnt Arsene play him in the two CL semis.

    Any answers?

I’ gave you a range of possible answers in my post at 4:50pm.

  95. Come on, Celtic!!!

  96. Good set of comments all.

Glad to see so many sane comments in one blog.

Notice, how, with the exception of Flamini, Hleb and Adebayor, that this squad is similar to the one that did so well in 2007-2008.

These players in my view have been replaced by Denilson, Nasri and Arshavin/(New Striker), and all the young players are now more experienced. Bendtner, Gibbs, Ramsey, Vela, Djourou, Walcott, Diaby will all be ready.

I think we will do better than in 2007-2008 this season.

  97. Everyone knows Denilson had a brief period of tiredness towards the end of the season – a period that included the Champions League semi-finals.

  98. “I think we will do better than in 2007-2008 this season.”

That’s because we will do better.

  99. Spurs will have to outspend us once more just to fight relegation.

Spurs is really a white elephant

  100. No Alan Alan,

You’re being ridiculous to imply the only reason Denilson might not have played is the ones you state. Arshavin didn’t play because he was cup-tied. Showing there are other reasons other than whether Arsene thinks he’s good enough to play or not play any particular person.

  101. We will definitely be title contenders but we need to pray and hope that RVP, Rosicky, Eduardo, Nasri, Gallas, Cesc, AA are all fit including our in-coming striker Huntelaar.

  102. Are there two Alan’s ?

  103. no Muppet ..its just an echo

  104. this time last year alex icecream and I were saying our problem is the strength of the squad everythting is fine in theory but when you have,EDS, Diably, Rosicky, RVP, and now Nasri who are injury prone after surgery thats where the problem lies.

  105. All these empty skulls do seem to generate echoes.

  106. Good technique, excellent movement, and superb finishing.

Could be Eduardo or Huntelaar, both excellent players but we will promote from within to cover for adebeyor i think. Plus, any new signing takes games away from Vela who is already 5th choice striker.

The idea that wenger will sign an english player with no technique who is all heart and no head for double what he is worth seems a little far fetched frankly.

Astonishing to see the stats on denilson last year 70 interceptions clear of anyone else in the league, double nearly everyone else. End of that argument. I hope we buy someone to cover at CM, especially with Song at the ACN, but we dont need a new starter.

  107. Yes we do have a lot of injuries. I struggle with the solution to that, taking injuries to be pure random bad luck. If injuries are due to just bad luck, then even buying other players won’t be the solution since random luck randomly applies to any random person and even potential new signings. Eduardo had never been injury prone before Matt Taylor chopped of his ankle, and only in his 5th month in the EPL.

So we could buy Fernando Torres and he’s be just as vulnerable to random luck.

Unless it’s non-random luck in which case we have to solve the root-causes of the injuries.

  108. solgooner… welcome back !!!!

    Thought you’d died of depression.

  109. why we are linked with all the sunderland targets or is it the other way around ?

usually if player x is linked with arsenal he is also a target of barca chelsea and bayern .
    chamakh ,cana now cattermole .

  110. Muppet

As in Alan Alan Sunderland he of the perm

Crouch is going to the Sperz so it just leaves us in left in the race for Huntelaar.Only 17m mark my words he will be the bargin of the summer

  111. The Spanish press are as bad as the English for making up transfer stories, so I wouldn’t get too excited about the Huntelaar rumours.

  112. So Pompey has Accepted Spur’s bid.. tings are lookin’ good.. lol

  113. Very strange to see people writing arsenal off.

I know i am biased, but surely the challengers all got worse and we got better this summer:

Manure – swapped worlds best sub for Owen, worlds 2nd best player and 40 goals a year for F***ING VALENCIA. They have only ferdinand, rooney and maybe vidic who are top class left, (see if he recovers from getting raped by torres and etto) possibly carrick. Everyone else is either very old, very young, or anderson.

Chelsea – the same ageing side that couldn’t challenge for the past two years. just like last year a new foreign coach is supposed to take mourinho’s old negative team with nothing but big midfielders and drogba and make them cruyffs ajax. Terry is on the slide, they SHOULD sell him – if they were a real club, who thought about money, they would see he is no where near as good as he was and cash in. Drogba, ballack, cech, carvalho are all 2 years removed form competance. They are essien and lampard away from real shitness.

Liverpool are rafa’s liverpool. They might not even be that if alonso and/or mascherano can weasel off to spain. Dull, defensive and too many draws would be extra crap without the good defense.

Arsenal have lost ade but added eduardo who is a better finisher, plus vela and bendtner are a year older each. We have the real fabregas and song and denilson look ready to roll this year.

    Almunia

    sagna djourou vermaalen clichy

    cesc denilson

    van persie arshavin rosicky

    eduardo

If the Centrebacks can get it sorted we will be champions.

  114. Oh yeah – man city are of course man city. That means a bumbling back line, flaky skill players, internal brew-ha-ha, and mid-table mediocrity a few places above sp**’s relegation dogfight.

  115. @ arsenhollis

“I hope we buy someone to cover at CM, especially with Song at the ACN, but we dont need a new starter.”

Agreed. I also think AW might be waiting to see how Diaby pans out in pre-season, given that he has wanted him to take a CM role next to Cesc for three seasons now, with only Diaby’s injuries scuppering that plan. Again, I am guessing, but I think that IF a player is brought in for CM, it will be someone who is different to both Denilson and Song to give further options rather than just be backup. (If that’s possible – not sure how many types of CM there are!)

  116. Muppet I was depressed and am ready for next depression if AW doesnt strengthen the squad and complete suicidal breakdown if we dont win any silverware and Wengerspin says we have character every time we lose

  117. Bragging Rights Ltd

Come on, Sol! Hop on the prozac bus.

  118. i went on prozac wen we lost

    to chelsea TWICE

  119. the only good thing so far is my aquaintance who is in the first team told me last September about Ades ego being disruptive in the dressing room so when I callled him Egobayor Yogi asked me not to be insulting

  120. Terry to stay at Chelsea now will Toure go to Citeh? If they offer 15m i believe we will sell.

  121. so at least hes gone that will cut down my intake of valium after he was offise 12 times in a game and missed 3 sitters

  122. Ah sole

Relax my son, It is only a game. Save your depression for the real world.

Arsene knows bad times are out there and is protecting us,

Imagine if your cheque book was being guarded by Arry, then you would be depressed LOL

  123. Atom @ 5.15pm – Redknapp admitted that the Spud’s had to sell in order to generate funds for new players. I think they might struggle to raise enough to raise enough for their usual spend.

  124. Manchester City in a bid to strengthen their defence have offered 100K a wek contacts to Tony Adams and Martin Keown.

Spurs are trying to get Marc Overmars and Manuel Petit to join Viera at WHL

  125. Ha ha ha solgooner….

did you that Liverpool have signed 2 italians, nikamota and robotelli ?

  126. Solgooner – When Petit left it was a bolt out of the blue but I heard a few months later that Wenger had insisted he was part of the Overmars deal because he had also been causing problems in the dressing room.

I know a lot of people are upset that Adebayor has gone but please realise that Wenger did not even try to keep him.

  127. solgooner,

Adebayor’s gone. Who would you channel hate through now? Sorry about your loss.

  128. The fans hated Ade because he was Greedy,Lazy,Dis-intersted,a Badge-Kisser and caught offside 10 times every game.Is that enough reasons
And his behaviour since he left has proved the fans were right all along

  129. Put the valium away, solgooner. Wenger’s already strengthened the squad. We’ve got everything we need for the new season.

  130. Where is AIC? Or has he agreed to let Sol talk for them both all the time now, rendering him redundant?

  131. we let our players for peanuts in the past now we get a fortune for atbest an average player .that single incident is enough to cheer up any supporters .

  132. Got a call from my brother. “Have you seen it”? He expected I’d have seen Ade’s sitter for Citeh. But it doesn’t interest me. He’s a Man City player. I have very little interest in Man City games.

  133. Last season we were particularly unfortunate with injuries but other than Van Persie and Rossicky -I don’t see our players being particularly injury prone.

I think Eduardo has an important part to play this season.

  134. People forget that solgooner IS AIC.

  135. That’s what I don’t get, since so many were so happy to see the back of him, why are they still obsessing about what he says or does? Even TH, once he left, I paid no attention whatsoever to what he did, until the CL when I wished him well only because we weren’t in it and I’m no fan of man u.

  136. I wouldn’t even say Rosicky is injury-prone, Arse Baggins – he had an undiagnosed and untreated injury.

  137. The Doomer's Family

Internal angry blog memo to all doomers,

Any doomer found taking anti-depressants will be stripped off from their respective positions and sent back to training camp. We have compiled each and every offside commited by Adebayor, and made a DVD. As a punsihment you will be made to watch it thrice a day, untill you give up your anti-depressants.

  138. .

  139. Succinct and inscrutable as ever, G4E.

  140. Don’t be angry, Mr Doomer’s Family. Solgooner was just joking. He is saving his anti-depressants for the day that all doomers dread – the day Arsenal win the league.

  142. Doomer Family…I actually rolled around in laughter at that one.

  143. top post Doomer’s great content clearly surpasses anything I’ve read from GooneRanks and Jj..

  144. 8pm Sunday night and a man, boy i guess, is that bored with his life and all wanked out already – useless.

Do you think we can realistically keep both Toure and Gallas with 1 possibly both of them as back-ups?

Personally I see Djourou as a must at the back now, meaning there must be an odd man out.

  145. Arsenehollis,

What’s wrong with just having Gallas and Toure at the back whilst easing the others in over time?

  146. Whilst Arsene Wenger sits on his bench, fine tuning his guitar so that he gets the right sound, occassionally buying new components to fine tune his musical instrument -others would have him throw his guitar and buy a new a pricier, upmarket one that achieves the same sound.

  147. Arse baggins – personally i think djourou should start on merit. The past two seasons have both been hindered by defensive weakness with both gallas and toure together. Last season may have been down to injuries, but as a combination they seem to struggle and there is well documented personal issues between them.

  148. Being stuck in bed isn’t as fun as it used to be.

  149. I dont know Maria. It depends whether you are alone or not and who you are with.

  150. Thanks FunGunner….just making it short and sweet :)

  151. We have compiled each and every offside commited by Adebayor, and made a DVD

that would be easy . while we were working over time to spread negativity u just sit on your butt and recorded a game ade played .well done mate .

  152. The Doomer's Family

Every offside ever commited, stretches to many games, not just one. Don’t worry though, I know you’re trying. You’ll get there one day, just keep pushing your brain.

  153. mmmm….well since even my own family are bringing food and medicine only to my door….i can only say it’s getting tried….just like this off-season…..

  154. the land mines be designed as welcome signs..

  155. Wow, in the same time as you were doing that I was watching my painted wall dry. Even after doing it I still considered it a better activity to some pointless video.

  156. Have you got swine flu, Maria?

  157. The Doomer’s Family

you compailed all the offsides committed by ade into one dvd !!! . i was surprised when i heard someone printed the bible to a match . this is better than that .

  158. What was the final score for Celtic/spuds?

  159. 1 loose cannon

2 -nil to Celtic. I’m quite surprised the amount of money the spuds have spent and yet they still look shit.

  160. @ FG

If I said yes, would our lesser contributors immediately log off??

  161. We can but dream…

  162. Then no but since, I haven’t gone to see the GP…..my mother is adamant I do…..it’s been a constant battle to stop her calling the ambulance everyday……

  163. Thanks 1 loose cannon – someone mentioned the game earlier so I was just curious about the final score, not that I really care.

  164. Maria, why would you need the ambulance for swine flu?

    The fatality rate is 0.05%.

Most people get over it without medical assistance. Some don’t even know they have it until they recover from it.

  165. 1 loose cannon

Watching Mxico V Usa Vela absolutely awesome ripped the US into shreds scored a wonderful goal.

  166. I love Vela. He’s a real talent.

  167. @ Maria

    Mums, eh? Cah!

Hope you’re not feeling too ghastly. It must be a bit like having the plague. Are your family giving you your meals on a tray attached to a long pole? All you need now is a sweetheart in the next parish who isn’t allowed to see you…

  168. No reason whatsoever, but try using statistics to back up a reasoned agrument when dealing with a concerned mother and my mother at that.

  169. 1 loose cannon,

    Where did you see that??

    @ FG

hehe…..if that sweetheart happened to be Vela it could have been so much worse.loooool

  170. Great to hear that about Vela 1 loose cannon – keep us apprised of the score. It would be great if we got to see more of Vela’s talent this season. He is full of promise and his goals for Arsenal to date have all been breathtaking.

  171. I just found this on Youtube – posted 7 minutes ago.

    It’s the Vela goal.

  172. 1 loose cannon

Vela is absolutely on fire set up another goal. He looks like he is been in the gym this summer looks physically strong very sharp, he could be the one to step up this season.

  173. Thanks Muppet, another trade mark Carlos Vela goal. He really is the ‘chip king’ – nobody does it better. That ball looked like it was going out when he hit it, but somehow he got it in the corner. No wonder Arsene is in no hurry to rush out and buy another striker with that much talent waiting in the wings!

  174. Even better news 1 loose cannon – it’s not like the USA are complete no hopers. They beat Spain at the Confed cup and were very unlucky to lose to Italy.

  175. Thanks, Muppet. Stunning finish from the boy!

    *****
    @ Maria

Just as well. You’d have to fight me to get to Carlos. And in your weakened state, there could only be one winner.

  176. Couldn’t agree more Passenal.

  177. Vela reminds me a bit of Eduardo. He is Mr Cool in front of the goal. Bright future for the lad hopefully with us for many many years

  178. @ FG

hehe….i think Ateeb maybe in joining in our one- sided cat fight…..always seems to be mentioning our ‘chip king’…..

  179. Vela you sick child .. I wonder what Wally is coming up with..

  180. Carlos Vela had a devastating effect…what class?

  181. I just read that he got 2 assists as well as the goal – it was 0 – 0 before he entered the game. He’s a star in the making.

Maria and FG, you’re just lucky I’m far too long in the tooth to be fighting you for Carlos, but he does have a killer smile!

  182. Vela will come back into the Arsenal side as a winner, adding to the feel-good factor.

    @ Maria

Ateeb doesn’t stand a chance either – I pull hair.

  183. @ Passenal

Maria and FG, you’re just lucky I’m far too long in the tooth to be fighting you for Carlos, but he does have a killer smile!

“Long in the tooth”? “Experienced and open-minded”, you mean. Pah! Have I taught you nothing?

  184. You’re right FG, I like ‘experienced and open-minded’ much better!

  185. Vela will be world class in 2-3 years. It’s so certain…

  186. @ FG

Well as most ACLF are quite aware i am not to be messed with when it comes to scratching faces.

    @ Pass

I must say, i think i enjoy the smile more the goal on occassions.

  187. Maria,

    He’s such a likeable kid isn’t he?

  188. With your beautiful faces all scratched, Vela might not want any of you.

  189. Yep and if they public thinks the lesser Ronaldo is ‘attractive’……Carlos will surely make both the Mexican n UK Vogue frontage in no time.

  190. *frontpage

  191. You bragging about your frontage again?

  192. “With your beautiful faces all scratched, Vela might not want any of you.”

Have a feeling that he still wouldn’t take Ateeb though.

  193. “You bragging about your frontage again?”

    Excuse moi???

  194. @ Maria

Yep and if they public thinks the lesser Ronaldo is ‘attractive’……Carlos will surely make both the Mexican n UK Vogue frontage in no time

I used to gag every time the lesser-spotted orange Ronaldo was described as good-looking.

    ***
So, so true about Vela’s world-class future. It’s all coming together for the squad. We are like a lion, crouching in the long grass of the savannah after many taxing hours spent tracking a herd of gazelles. Muscles bunched, totally still, eyes fixed firmly on the prize, at last the time has come to spring… Arsenal are coming!

Roll on the start of the season. The closer it gets, the harder it is to wait.

  195. To keep us going ladies.

  196. Even better.

  197. Rafael Vandervaart has just had his shirt number taken from him .. The Galacticos II is ruthless.

  198. Thanks for the links Maria – I particularly liked Arsene’s reaction captured in the second video. He must have seen many sights over the years, but the sheer audacity of Carlos’ goal had him grinning all over his face.

  199. Superb compilations, Maria. Thanks for posting them. Henry MkII.

I’m off to bed now. Good night, all.

  200. Night night.

  201. love the clips maria

  202. Your welcome guys.

  203. I love you Maria (assuming you are female). Can we have kids together?

  204. Well that all depends do you look anything like Vela??

  205. lets hope he can carry this form into the season. Huntelaar that would be amazing but then the likes of Jay Thomas will never get a look in. Tough one.

  206. @ SG

Why would you want Huntelaar when we have Vela as a 4th choice striker???

  207. I suppose we need a fifth choice.

    Good night.

  208. Vela? hmmmnn…depending on the shade of light, the angle you view me from…maybe. Maria?

  209. California Gooner

SilverGunner, Oh dear? The Adebayor to Man City argument is a bit tiring for sure. If they hadn’t bought him they would have bought someone else talented, so I’m not too plussed about strengthening them. But the argument that Dein has never been adequately replaced? I agree! And I think I’m not alone in that. He was brilliant at the deal-making end of the game.

  210. Vela (and dos Santos) is ripping the US apart. 1 goal and 1 assist so far. Vela is a cut above most of the players on show. He has bulked up – he will be a handful. Yes siree, its good to be a Arsenal fan.

  211. Assist #2 – Vela!

  212. Where are you watching this SG??

  213. Fox Soccer Channel. 5-0 final.

  214. That Vela goal, a super chip over the goalie, much like he did against Burnley (I think). He is obviously not 100%, coming back from an injury but this kid is class!

  215. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    Can’t believe i missed it!!!!!!!

  216. Hi Maria – I feel your pain.
I tuned in mainly to see Vela and I wasn’t dissappointed. While it was a US “B” team – our boy showed he is simply a cut above in class.
Dos Santos is an enigma to me – really good with the ball at his feet – but can’t hack it in the PL? Wrong club, I guess.

  217. Hey SG,

Well CV has been the topic of convo tonight so good to see his proving us all right.

On Dos Santos he failed in Barcalona came to the Spuds to work his way back up to a big club…hasn’t worked out for him…..can’t see why when they play fat Huddlestone playing in MD……..

  218. I really should sleep now but here is a link to a couple of videos of the the gold cup. With Vela scoring.

    http://www.freesoccerhighlights.com/soccer/highlights/2009/07/26/united-states-0-mexico-5-concacaf-2009-gold-cup-final-sunday-july-26-2009/

  219. Massive Vela!!!

I feel like the season of 2007/ 2008 when everyone couldn’t see that Arsenal were the real deal. If i was a betting man i would bet everything Arsenal this time Round.

This seems to be the season when Everyone will be forced to recognize the genius of Dennilson. Come next summer, after the world cup, and he will be linked to Real & Barca…

hehehe good times to be an Arsenal fan. I feel like a kiddie in a candy shop…

  220. Will you feel the same if Kolo goes to City & they don’t replace him?

  221. Ah, rev, thank goodness for a real supporter, someone who can see what Wenger is doing to this great club.

  222. I’m not being overly pessimistic, just realistic, there’s no substitute for experience.

Take a look at the teams who have won the premiership in recent years & look at their defensive units… kinda says it all really…

  223. Huntelaar will be joining soon I can smell it

  224. Rev, we always new if Terry said no to city, they’d come after Kolo. We’ll have to see if wenger rates Toure as much as Ancelotti rates Terry

  225. Its like alot of people on here always say, players only leave because wenger wants them to. So if Kolo leaves, its wengers thinks he’s a bag of shite

  226. If that’s true, why did AW sign Silvestre?

  227. Why sell Toure & keep Silvestre?

  228. AW may well be a genius, however, it doesn’t take a genius to see that Silvestre / Senderos / Djeriou / Vermaelen aren’t as good as Kolo Toure. Yes, JD & TV might be better in a few years time, but in the mean time they’re not.

What if we sell Toure & Gallas breaks a leg or does his cruciate? The title would be over…

  229. @Rev

I shall feel the same when Cesc hoists the trophy on high, and the confetti comes falling down as everyone jumps up and down without boots on….

  230. Rev, It must be because Silvestre’s a bag of shite who no one will buy, whereas Wenger must feel Toures a bag of shite who people will pay for. Its all about the maths

  231. I’m not being overly pessimistic, just realistic

Reality says that he is currently an arsenal Player, with the team in Pre-season.

Wenger looks like he will keep the defense together (Except maybe sell Senderos if a good enough offer comes)

Gallas is going on free next year – Wenger is setting him up for his retirement, so why sell Toure? He will use Gallas this year, And Toure too, then see Amongst TV & Djourou who will be Toure’s Partner next season.. Sylvestre is, and will always be, Back up..

  232. 12 million for Kolo doesn’t seem realistic anyway if Lescott is being touted at 20 million.

    This story smells a bit.

  233. @Rev

I think we need to sell you to Mancity…

  234. Rev, you do realise that Toure hasn’t been sold yet, right?

You say “I’m not overly pessimistic, just realistic”.

Well the reality is that Toure is an Arsenal player and all this crap is just rumours. Absolutely nothing has been confirmed, city haven’t voiced any any public interest in him yet, and even his Mr 20% is yet to crawl out of the woodwork.

So now that you have a better understanding of the reality of the situation why don’t you give another shot at being “realistic”? Let’s see if you can do better this time around.

  235. Dammit it arsenalkabisa, you bet me to it!!!

  236. Fergie said it well.

mancity is a small club. No big boys will go to play there. Only the small boys do. I am not realy woried about kolo. If wenger wants to keep hold onto him he will.

And he wants to keep hold of him. trust me. Arsene Knows

  237. That should be ‘beat’.

  238. This Toure situation will let us know for certain if we’re in desperate need of money. Theres no way Toure would be sold otherwise

  239. @SDT.

nice to have you back. longtime.

He should be realistic, and go on a free transfer to Citeh

Me thinks the only player who isn’t in Wenger’s plans for the new season is Senderos. Though this Huntelaar bit sound juicy, though i doubt it: what with Arshavin, Bendtner, Eduardo, Vela, etc etc I don’t see it happening.

  240. arsenalkabisa, I wouldn’t read too much into what Ferguson says, he’s just bitter. Every clubs success story has to start somewhere and the City fans have always been loyal even though they’ve been so shit for years and years. They deserve success more then the Chavs fans do anyway.

  241. I have to agree arsenalkabisa. If I’m really honest I really enjoyed reading that interview until I got to the end where he started going on about how we would be under threat for 4th place because of the teams below. That kind of rubbed me up the wrong way.

But in hindsight I actually think it’s a significant compliment to our side and a indicator of the possible threat that we pose to Man poo in ol’ Red Nose’s eyes. The signs are definitely looking good for the coming season.

  242. @James

True that. But if you need money why not sell Senderos? Why Toure? Its only if the players wants to go. And any player who wants to play for City, has no right to be an Arsenal player.

If Millan is Beyonce, Citeh must be Boyle.

Which I guess makes Arsenal a super combination of Angelina Jolie & Catherine Zeta Jones…

  243. “A combination of Angelina Jolie & Catherine Zeta Jones.”

Is that the best you can think of? Any woman who f*cks Brad Pitt has no right to be associated with Arsenal.

How about a super combination of Passenal, FunGunner, and Maria?

  244. Cheers arsenalkabisa. It’s good to be back. I’ve been a little too busy to contribute but I’ve still kept an eye on the blog and some of the good work that you guys have been doing.

Regarding rev’s greatly anticipated transfer to citeh: If only we were so lucky! I’ve got my fingers crossed, but I’m not expecting a great deal.

  245. Red nose is worried. Wenger should throw some of his one liners at him too.

Shame that he is busy preparing the team to be champions. Wish he had a little time to throw some of his jibes too.

But Rednose is in trouble. the lesser Ronaldo used to bail them out of many tight spots, now he has Nani, Valencia, and Park. Seriously red nose may miss next seasons Champions league. He should have retired when he was at the top, than wait to see the carpet pulled from under him by Wenger.

Everton, & Villa look like a real threat to Rednose

  246. No man could possibly manage such a woman, Pz.

  247. @PZ

That actually made me laugh so hard….

Okay i concede. It is Passenal, FunGunner, and Maria then.

Tounge in cheek, I though only Maria was a she? Shhhhh dont tell i asked..

  248. It all looks crazy at Arsenal. The idea that we’d sell more of our experienced players, especially Toure, who represents Arsenal more than any player at the club.

Why would we want to sell Toure?

  249. Let’s hope so, i think we’re in good shape going forward, but you need a GREAT defense to win the premiership. Take a look at the teams who have won it b4 and tell me otherwise.

We do not have a GREAT defense, and IF we lost Toure it’ll be even worse… hence me speculating… of course I realise Toure hasn’t gone yet, but if the clubs are in fact ‘in talks’, it would suggest a deal is there to be done.

Lets hope that isn’t the case.

Am i the only person on here who thinks we’re short in defence???

  250. OG – Cash is king

  251. Am i the only person on here who thinks we’re short in defence???

I think you are the only person.

Clichy, Gibbs, Sylvestre, Song, Gallas, Toure, Senderos, TV, Traore, Sagna, Eboue,

Where are you going to play them all? Thats a whole team …

  252. Rev, we cant defend Corners and Set piesces to save our lives, when there balls are crossed in were all shitting our pants, whoever says they aren’t are lying

  253. Poliziano, I think you just created a new pinnacle in sexual fantasy!

I apologise if that comes across as crass and inappropriate but I’m a red blooded man and there’s only so much provocation I can take.

(As a side note; Catherine Zeta Jones F*cks Michael Douglas, which is even worse)

  254. arsenalkabisa – how many of those players would get in the MAN UTD or Chelsea 1st team?

  255. Szombathelyi Haladas have come up in the world – when we met them last year they’d only just won promotion from the second division, but they had a good 08-09 and have already been playing in the Europa Cup qualifiers this summer, so they’ll be fit and ready tonight.

At this stage, you’d still have to be nuts to read anything into the game, but it’s definitely going to be a good test for us.

Blokey comment: Arsenal is more like Christina Hendricks from Mad Men; an underrated red incendiary device.

  256. James, you hit the nail on the head – hence us losing or dropping points to the likes of Bolton & Blackburn…

  257. Not everyone is wooed by cash. Kaka refused to go – and remember the cash was good.

But to be the best, you have to play with the best.

    Cash is not always king…

  258. Full backs are great, Centre backs are good individualy but there’s no great pairing. Gallas is a terrific player but the guys a prick and maybe that has something to do with it

  259. arsenalkabisa – how much did Real sign KAKA for?

  260. “No man could possibly manage such a woman, Pz.”

From reading last night’s comments, I think poor Carlos Vela might have to.

  261. how many of those players would get in the MAN UTD or Chelsea 1st team?

11 defenders into Manures first team??? I don’t think rednose would agree…

  262. Rev I’d argue that our entire first choice back four is equal to if not better than any in the premier league.

    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy

That’s four and the others are young and have great potential.

You know this brand of ‘realism’ is very reminiscent of something else that finds it’s way into the blogs.

  263. are you honestly trying to say that Toure & Gallas would walk into the Man U first team ahead of Vidic & Ferdinand? or Terry & Carvalho at Chelsea?

  264. @Rev

are you honestly trying to say that Toure & Gallas would walk into the Man U first team ahead of Vidic & Ferdinand? or Terry & Carvalho at Chelsea?

Is your wife prettier than mine?

  265. Who leaked the most goals past two seasons?

  266. Who is prettier – Gallas or Vidic?

  267. That would certainly be a test of the young lad’s manhood, Pz.

When, oh when will women realise it is experience that counts not some here today, gone tomorrow, good looks and muscle tone?

  268. Ferdinand is SOOOOOOOO over rated it’s actually stopped being funny, and Terry has been a donkey right from the start, living off the quality of the players around.

Vidic is a very capable defender, but has been shown up on occasions last season. Carvalho is again a very good defender but not as unbeatable as you night presume. These players have a success rate and reputation that is built not solely on their individual defensive capabilities but on the combined defensive displays of the respective teams they play for.

  269. @Rev

Whose defense was most plagued by most injuries?

The defense was so plagued by injuries at one point we were playing without Almunia Clichy Gallas and Sagna.

tell me how Manure would fare without VDS, Rio, Vidic, and that cunt on the left back who calls men as boys

  270. …….around him.

  271. atleast they can defend corners & free kicks… we certainly can’t.

  272. Walking into another team’s first team is a ridiculous notion. John Terry would be useless for Barcelona because as a footballer he’s crap, while an unknown Barca player might actually corner a place in the Barca lineup.

It’s silly really. Especially as Carvalho isn’t even in the starting lineup at Chelsea and he’s a better player and defender than John Terry.

  273. “are you honestly trying to say that Toure & Gallas would walk into the Man U first team ahead of Vidic & Ferdinand? or Terry & Carvalho at Chelsea?”

Rev, respect to you, but I find that kind of analysis pretty superficial.

When it comes to defences, the unit is always most important. And as a unit, Clichy, Toure, Gallas and Sagna played big roles in setting a premier league record for consecutive clean sheets at home last season.

Injuries did for us in April and May, but I’m pretty sure that we won’t be losing 5 key defensive players in unison again this season.

We also now have Vermaelen in there as well, while Djourou and Senderos are very capable as back up.

  274. @SDT

    Amen.

Etoo and Messi showed what happens when they play against world class players. they get totally found out…

And for the record @REV, were I a female, I guess I would have preferred the Sulky Gallas with a Mohawk…

  275. I think that last season we suffered because we failed to defend as a unit. At the start of the previous season I felt that we had a defensive back line that on quite a few occasions performed to a level superior to any other in the league. It fell apart later on, but that to me is merely an indicator of what those players are capable of.

  276. @Rev

    Kill that Vybe totally.

We are the strongest team going into next season. We have a wild card in that no one rates us, and we are an unknown quality.

Unlike everyone else who has aged a year, we have wisened a year. You want to tell me Denilson will be overawed by a Dellap long throw? Or Hull will pull that Shtziy again? Nah we are wiser.

Chelski is older, Pool will have a mediocre season, ala what happened to us after the run of 07/08, manure will be non staters. put your money on Arsenal. You wont go wrong mate.

    You heard it here first.

  277. So, Consolsbob,

“Love built on beauty, soon as beauty, dies”

    - but love built on expert cockmanship lasts forever.

  278. Man Poo’s strongest team

    EVDS

    Rafael Vidic Ferdinand Evra

    Valencia Carrick Hargreaves Nani

    Berbatov Rooney

    Our strongest team

    Almunia

    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy

    Rosicky Fabregas Denilson Arshavin

    RVP EDS

Our two strikers are better goalscorers. Our right back is clearly better, our two wide men are better, Fabregas is better than anyone they have in midfield.

P.S. – Sorry, forgot to tell you great post!

  280. Morning all! I love reading the support of Denilson. Whenever his name is mentioned in a positive light, this blog is a pleasure to read. And so true. Vela too, is cut from the same cloth. Positive players with great vision, technique and intelligence who play with passion and happiness. I love it. A point on spelling mistakes, I’m not sure it’s necessary correcting them in the next box as I am sure we cna all decipher what you were trying to write. Oh, and Toure, ditto.

  281. If this doesnt make you laugh… then i dont know what will this Monday morn…

Its called the Arsene Curse. All exiting players beware: only go with Arsene’s blessings…

Reports suggest the Cameroon international has agreed a five-year deal with Inter and will earn about £9.6m a season. It brings an end to his five-year stay at the Nou Camp.

The deal is now a step closer although the stumbling block could yet be Hleb’s reluctance to move to Italy.

The Belarus international told Sport Bild magazine: “I have a contract with Barcelona and am currently preparing for the new season with the team.

“My aim is to make the breakthrough here and be successful with this club.”

Hleb’s agent has even denied being contacted about a switch to Inter.

“Nobody has spoken to me or Alex about a possible transfer to Inter Milan,” said Uli Ferber.

“We are all a bit surprised about the recent press reports, which we cannot confirm.”

at 7:52 pm ——–> hahahaha oh dear *breathes* ahahaha…

  283. @OG

Comparing the two teams, Both Arshavin and Rosiscky will tear Rafael and Evra a new one.

Arshavin, Edds and Cesc will be too much for that team. I Think we should play with a man less so as to balance the equation…

  284. Is that last line one of yours Pz? It has a certain ring.

Personally, I feel in my prime. I may not have the energy to run around all day like some late unlamented ex midfielder of ours but I have accumulated skills and the confidence and good sense to use them as appropriate.

Still, to some who do not see the greater picture I will always be to Vela as Flamini is to Bergkamp.

It reminds me of Charles Fox talking disparagingly about a change of Prime Minister in the early 18th C, “Pitt is to Addington as London is to Paddington”.

  285. Ole Gooner

RVP has never hit more than 11 league goals in a season.Hardly prolific

  286. “I love reading the support of Denilson. Whenever his name is mentioned in a positive light, this blog is a pleasure to read. And so true.”

There’s some classic Denilson in today’s ATVO goal – Arshavin’s effort against Blackburn; he intercepts a pass, flicks the ball over a player’s head, starts the attack and plays a killer through-pass for Arshavin.

Of course, it’s a travesty that the goal should be considered the 5th best by Arsenal of all time, but then Arshavin did score it, so that counts double.

  287. PSB,

    Here we go again.

RvP is a second striker. His figures are great for a player with that role.

  288. Henry 14,

Still scores more goals per minutes than Rooney & Berbatov.

To be fair they’ve been comparable but RVP was more productive last season. Not even counting assists and how many times he hit the bar.

  289. While I agree that we have a good chance of doing well this season I disagree with those who believe that being underestimated is an advantage.

how much was the Man U run of not conceeding a goal helped by teams being frightened of them.

Unfortunately we are now seen as a possible “scalp” by other teams, the big team they might beat.

If a team believes they will lose they are halfway to being beaten. That is part of what has kept ManU at the top even when their squad is not as strong as people believe when looked at objectively.

  290. Plus last year was almost his first full season. A season of which no one really banged them in…

  291. @JohnN

Remember how we under estimated hull last season?

We didn’t think we were losing till when the final whistle went.

Before teams realize it we will have a 12 point gap by Christmas, 18 by February, and then the hacks will start praising how Arsenal have been brilliant

  292. @Rev

Whose defense was plagued most by injuries?

The defense was so plagued by injuries at one point we were playing without Almunia Clichy Gallas and Sagna.

tell me how Manure would fare without VDS, Rio, Vidic, and Evra

  293. One oF Us, thanks for that ATVO link. Classic AA, and classic Denilson. A sideways pass to keep possession and to keep the rhythm and tempo going that he specialises in, then a one-two with Song, and then a killer defence-splitting pass for Arshavin to run onto. Those who see only sideways or backwards passes from Denilson are seeing only half the work the man does. And it’s all part of the way we play. He is key.

  294. This Viera thing wont seem to go away. Its stupid, of all places why would he wont to go there? The spuds fans wouldn’t want him and it will tar our memory of him. I really hope this doesn’t happen

  295. on the contrary, when even the big teams come out against The Arsenal they are exposed.. If the roles are reversed and mid table teams think they can have a go .. doubters will be silenced..

  296. arsenalkabisa – regardless of injuries, our current defense cannot cope with corners & set pieces… look at the teams we’ve lost to in the past couple of years… we need a big aerial defender who can pass a ball with Toure or Gallas making up the pace around him…

  297. JOHN Terry has pledged his future to Chelsea, denting Manchester City’s hopes of fielding a team comprised entirely of unbearable dicks.

Recent signings including Emmanual Adebayor and Roqué Santa Cruz, alongside existing players like Craig Bellamy, have boosted City’s despicability rating. Hopes were high that neutral fans would not find anyone they would be willingly to urinate on, regardless of whether they were on fire or not.

Terry’s decision means City boss Mark Hughes will now be forced to find another centre back who blames his teammates for his own mistakes, often before the game has even started.

But the Chelsea captain said: “My decision was never in doubt and that is why I decided to say absolutely nothing for as long as I possibly could.”

He added: “With Ballack, Lampard and Essien, I think Chelsea can still be the most eye-gougingly repulsive club in the country.

“Look at our front two. Who would not jump at the chance to smash Drogba and Anelka’s teeth in one by one with a toffee hammer. Even our own fans dislike them, and that’s just world class.”

City fans still hope their team can become the most revolting in Manchester. Stephen Malley, from Gorton, said: “Selling Ronaldo immediately makes United 20% less detestable.

“Gary Neville will soon be sent to live on a farm and Michael Owen is quite lovable in a fragile sort of way, like the little boy from The Sixth Sense.

“If Ferguson resigns, the title’s ours. They’d have to hire Gary Glitter as coach to have any hope of being hated more.”

  298. (from a liverpool fan)

  299. Its patently clear that our defense has been troubled over the past few seasons now. And its not all down to injuries, our propensity to concede silly goals from set pieces and a lack of defensive organization continues to frustrate players, fans and the manager! Vermy was brought in to add that organization and provide some leadership. As experienced a legend Kolo may be, I’m not entirely convinced that he’s indispensible and like the Ade situation, I trust the manager with that call.

Bassong and Chamahk still lie waiting and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them replace Eboue and Sendy.
Huntelaar sounds like a great acquisition, but I fear that Milan could also have their spoon in the pot for him since they’ve failed to sign Dzeko and Fabiano.
A DCM is also a priority. When Song Departs for ANC – it’ll leave us short of cover.
Interesting weeks ahead. I expect Wenger to spring a few surprises yet.

  300. Thanks for the ATVO link, One Of Us. A classic piece of Denilson greatness. The sideways pass to keep possession for us, as well as keeping the rhythm and tempo going. A neat one-two with Song, followed by a defence-splitting pass for Arshavin to run onto and (eventually) score. Anyone who only sees Denilson’s backward and sideways passes are missing half of what the man does. And these backwards and sideways passes are just as important for the way the team plays and the tempo he (alongside Cesc) creates. This underrated man is essential.

  301. underrated greatness?

  302. aargh.. lost in the floating world of yesterday’s threads. Last!

  303. It’s not just about making money from matches in the far east.

Going on tours will promote Arsenals brand around the world which is important.
