Good Grief, Is He Still Here?

First of all, every thought should go to John Hartson and his family following the neurosurgery he underwent yesterday as a result of his cancer.

By comparison the transfer news is trivial. It might not be in the minds of the individuals involved but in the greater scheme of things, it is. Adebayor is apparently stalling on the deal. The media, no doubt fed by the disgruntlement at Arsenal and hoping to pass it onto Manchester City fans, claim that it is the player’s wages demands that are holding the deal up. Given that they have told us already that the deal on the table is worth £170k per week, either they have been woefully misinformed or willfully misleading their readers. Not too hard to work out which side of the fence I think they fall.

Whatever the reason for the prevarication – The Guardian plausibly believes it to be concern over the perception amongst his fellow countrymen – it seems to me that the deal will go through. Reports suggesting that he has already had a medical appear wide of the mark. Even so, has it gone too far to fail. Well, OK, until he signs it has not but you catch my drift.

Adebayor is aware that Arsene may want him but he is not indispensable. How does that affect him mentally? The issue becomes one of motivation for the move. Has he the desire to stay at Arsenal or during discussions with the club that he was ambivalent towards remaining in London. The suspicion will always remain that Milan was the preferred destination but once that became out of reach, any club would do.

There are no guarantees in football but he has a better chance currently of playing Champions League matches at Arsenal than at Eastlands, next season and in all likelihood, the one after. City are intent on assembling a decent starting XI but do not forget that the rest of the squad struggled last season to test the waters of the top half of the table. Injuries, suspensions, international travels all contribute negatively over a season – are the players coming in to replace the new boys up to scratch?

I am not convinced that there would be an issue within the dressing room should he remain, in fact staying may enhance his standing with his fellow squad members provided he presents the reasons for staying the correct manner. Convincing supporters or certain sections of them; well, he could score sixty goals next season and still be classified as a lazy bugger. In some people’s eyes, he will do not right. Even then, failure to score thirty will lead to criticism. It seems a little chance of a win situation.

Rob Kelly in his Daily Telegraph column argues that Arsenal will be stronger without Adebayor, surprisingly without mentioning Robin van Persie once. He believes Wenger will play Arshavin as the second striker so being top scorer and Player of the Season counts for nothing other than a place on the bench…

Incoming, unsurprisingly the focus is on Chamakh whose fee will apparently include Silvestre if Bordeaux get their way. A tad hard to imagine that the inclusion of the former Manchester United player will be a deal breaker, especially since the back four is well-stocked and his contract, like those of Gallas, Toure and Senderos, is up next summer. If he does not arrive, Huntelaar is the next media darling although VfB Stuttgart want the Dutchman and have reportedly agreed a fee of €20m. Don’t be surprised if Adebayor = Eto’o + Hleb in Catalan eyes although whether they do so in those of London N5, remains to be seen.

That’s it for today. ’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. YW:s last post in yesterday’s comments: He does not have a British or EU nation passport, is not from a British colony / dependency so therefore cannot work in this country without a Permit.

In addition, the work permit needs to be reapplied, or apply for a new one, when you change your employer, thus new hearings.

  2. 1st!

  3. Oh stupid internet cache. Good article as usual YW. Prefer Ade to stay. Strengthening and not weakening the squad should be our priority -as Arsene has already stated.

  4. Ooh, 1st… Good post again Yogi. It seems that there is still nothing real about this than Hughes comments in the lines of ‘there has been talks’. The fee and wages seem to have come out of thin air in the original rumours.

Now Guardian etc have back-tracked about the medical and stuff, cause there seems to be no evidence of them. Hughes and few others are in Abu Dhabi and City’s web page has no news, except for the copy of the Guardian story.

Does anyone know are all the 1st team players, aside from Vela, supposed to be back already?

  5. Call me nuts but I think Jay Simpson is an adequate replacement for Adebayor!

  6. Ole

It’s only reported that he attended. Nothing actually seen of him entering the building, to the best of my knowledge.

    YW

  7. You’re most likely right YW, it’s probably misreporting.

  8. Who the f*ck knows what AW is up to in the transfer market? Who the f*ck knows what is happening with Ade?

  9. shotta – not the journos. Why do we pay any attention to it at all?

  10. kenyan gunner,

I love Jay Simpson. Like the lad’s attitude. I’m all for him getting his chance but wouldn’t it be a gamble to throw him in?

  11. And where are all these quotes coming from, like ‘I need to sleep over it’, ‘I need more time’, ‘Togo blah-blah’. It’s like suddenly there is been like four different interviews within 12 hours, two of those during the night.

Yet nobody seems to have direct quotes, or exclusives…

These rumours surely have worked for City’s advantage, or is it really such a big coincidence that Tevez finally signed the same day these stories started to appear…

The deal would most likely weaken Arsenal. I know people say that Nik can step up etc. So what, Nic will play all the games? What if he gets injured? What if RvP gets injured as well? Will we see the shortest Arsenal side ever?

  12. Oh, of course buying a new striker would help, but there is no guarantees it would make the team better.

And most seem to think new striker is not needed, in fact many seem to think that more squad players should be sold.

Liverpool had first pre-season game yesterday, was Alonso playing? I seem to recall his move being as certain as Ade’s in the papers…

  13. The deal would most likely weaken Arsenal.
    ———————-

I wouldn’t think it will necessarily weaken Arsenal, it removes an option, but we have a lot of goals without Ade.

Nik won’t play all the games but he’ll give us the height some think we need up front.

Injuries can always happen, remember Ade was injured for quite a few games last season.

Ade, Nik and V. persie only counted for 30 out of our 68 goals, I’m sure Arshavin, Eduardo and possibly Rosicky will have something to add to that tally.

  14. Ade may well be gone by the time I finish posting but the truly hilarious part of this saga is how much the Ade-bashers rushed to ACLF to gloat at the news (rumors) of his transfer. Isn’t it ironic, given that ACLF is a hotbed of pro-Arsenal supporters?

  15. Ole & Kenyan gunner –

It would be a big gamble to throw in Jay. Bendtner can take Ade’s place in the squad. Eddy can take his place in the team.

Away against ‘big teams’ is all we need the big man for really. At home at against most sides I would rather see Eddy start.

In addition, we have so many goal threats that Ade’s first touch and consistent off-sides are detrimental to the side. We often lose position via Ade.

If he stays and works harder fine. I however, think we can do without him.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  16. @Anaconda

Previous post. Yap – Think I read your posted article. The formation is based on the same, as we have players who are a smite better technically than the Brazilians.

    @Jimbo
Previous post. I prefer Denilson coz I find him better off technical when compared to song, even though Song is the more robust tackler and muscle man. Probably, based on the given game you can switch the two. Both have unique attributes that puts them in an advantage position when compared to the other.

    @Kenyan Gunner
Yap that boy is raw power. reminds me of Drogba season before last!!

  17. May be Adebayor needs a hug. Most times a player needs fatherly advice to make them buckle up.
I’m not happy that Adebayor’s transfer rumours have over shadowed this week.
Where are our transfer dealings heading this summer?

  18. Jay Simpson is a great shout.

He sdeserves his chance as much as anyone and although didnt do much at WBA (neither did Gibbs at Norwich!), pre-season is as good a time as any to put him in and show the boss what he can do.

I would endorse this regardless of Ade staying or leaving.

  19. Lets hope we see Simpson in the pre-season, I’d also like if Coquelin would play in at least one of the games.

And maybe one of the young center-halves, Ayling or Bartley. Seems likely that they’ll get a chance, I think last year there was Hoyte&Hoyte in central defence in at least one of the games.

    @wengerball

You make valid points, but for me removing an option weakens a team, because it limits variations. For example using Ade&Nic both in some cases might be good tactical option, which Arsene wont have if Ade leaves.

  20. Liverpool had first pre-season game yesterday, was Alonso playing? I seem to recall his move being as certain as Ade’s in the papers

No he didn’t play. None of their Spanish contingent is back for preseason or something.

Me thinks Ade situation is a win win for Arsenal. IF he stays, good. If he goes, good. As YW says, I think he has realized that, or the media, and MATT were pulling our legs all along.

But if he stays, he needs major PR, and to keep his head own (like Gallas…), and score 60 goals, Defend, goal keep, be a ball boy, clean the stadium and Officiate!

Though the silence from Arsenal.com is deafening.

  21. Ade is now behaving now worse than he did last summer.Wenger already has a replacement lined up in Chamakh. So his plans are now out the window.Arsene says Ade”s behaviour had a terrible effect on the team at the start of last season and he has done it again.I bet Arsene wishes Ade and his agent would just go away.Who could blame city who have made a generous offer of £25m if the pulled out. Then that would leave us £25m short and unable to purchase the players we need,a DM to improve the squad. What a shambles

  22. I’m puzzled at the number of people who wants Adebayor to leave Arsenal. Even here in Nigeria, he is not in good books of many.
But, i believe if this happens to be another player, won’t these haters be insulting Arsene Wenger for selling a yet another first teamer.

  23. The Reds

Wenger should call Ade”s bluff by buying Chamakh, who would only cost £7m + Silvestre,to show Ade has no future at the club.I believe he is trying to get as much money out of City. How low can this guy stoop?

  24. I thought I was nuts when shouting for Jay Simpson. Either all the others shouting for him are as nuts as I am or maybe we are just normal. But I believe Jay is a gamble worth taking. Mind you one think we aren’t short of is strikers. Add a scoring midfielder like Arshavin and we have enough scoring options!

  25. Oh dear,

    RB Salzburg 1 – 1 Bohemians.

Irish team Bohemians managed to get a score draw against Red Bull Salzburg yesterday in the UCL qualifiers. Marc Janko, who scored obscene amount of goals last season, missed a penalty.

Money really does not always bring success.

I don’t follow the English press that much, is it normal that the hacks prefer to rewrite the same bullshit than to actually report about the football that is actually happening? Or is it more of the case of the football not happening in England and thus uninteresting?

  26. I don’t want Ade to leave Arsenal,GfN.

  27. Gunner from Nigeria wrote: won’t these haters be insulting Arsene Wenger for selling a yet another first teamer.

It’s remarkable, for years it seems to have been Arsene’s greatest faults, letting first teamers go and now suddenly it is just the thing he has to do.

  28. I am holding my hands up with regards to Jimbo I saw him on another blog and I quote:

“If ade goes, we’ll sign Chamakh and nobody else. If ade stays, we’ll sign nobody. Wenger the clueless twat will Fuck up another transfer window”

I stand corrected, the guy is a prick! Please don’t think that I in anyway want to be associated with his views or opinions. He may have been right on that one issue but overall he is a cock!

  29. is it normal that the hacks prefer to rewrite the same bullshit than to actually report about the football that is actually happening?

    to quote Frank

“Football without a football = BULLSHIT”

    @Dave

Chamakh wouldn’t necessarily come and just slot in. He will have to bed in. Keeping Ade aynt so bad, as he is now almost at his peak. Chamakh is learning his trade. And how do you know that he too aynt a trouble maker?

  30. Ade to stay at the Arsenal… and scores 28 goals….

  31. The Reds

You are right. From the moment the final whistle went in the CL semi Arsene has been planning for the new season without Ade.Now what does he do?And we could lose £25m.They can be no way Ade can ever play for us again. Not after what has happened this week.By Arsenal excepting the City bid means we dont want him.
I believe Ade is stalling in the hope Milan will come in for him.But there is no way they will pay £25m for him.

  32. Arsenalkabisa, I disagree completely that Denislson is a better technicalal player than Song. The widely held assumption that South American players are technically better than their African counterparts may have some truth to it but doesn’t bear out in the particular case of these two players, as far as I could see from both their plays last season.

  33. Excellent post Yogi,

Football’s played in the head as well as with the feet. Ade’s head wasn’t in the right place last season and he will be aware of how many fans feel about him.

I personally wouldn’t want to work for a company that didn’t appreciate me. I think he is easily duped by journos and naive in his comments when taliking about loyalty v’s wages. No-one knows what effect his machinations have on the rest of the team, but we do know that AW said last season’s transfer window uncertainty had a detrimental effect on the squad.

I think it would be in Ade’s and Arsenal’s best interest if he moved on – preferably to Milan rather than citeh…

  34. @dave

And you have an Exclusive? or are you reading from the SUN again???

  35. To be honest, his frequent offsides used to do my head in. Is there any stat that detail how his offsides compare with other strikers?

  36. drew10,

I think it actually a different Jimbo. The Jimbo on here has changed his name to James.

  37. Henristic,

Ade was offside 43 times last season and RVP 11. Ade did play up front in the 4:5:1 formation so you would expect him to be offside more than RVP – but not to that extent…

  38. Can’t Arsenal fly through a summer without turbulence in the transfer market. We have sold a key player every summer since the move to the Emirates. With one year left in the contracts of Toure, Gallas and Senderos who knows what next summer holds?
I’m praying for a trophy this season.

  39. thanks Rasputin, what about the stats for lone strikers in other EPL teams?

  40. I got those figures from the Arsenal site Henristic. I am not a big fan of stats to prove a point, but I think you will find that Ade was offside considerably more times than any other similar striker …. very frustrating…

  41. If Ade goes, he goes; if he shows a desire to stay then let him stay. No one player should ever be allowed to play porkies with a huge football club like The Arsenal.

    Has anyone seen this? http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/?p=1031

  42. Oh ffs, adebayor, just go already! Ur not welcome here! Its over! Shooo ! Shooo ! U vermin! Now where’s my broom? Shoooooo a billion times!

  43. LA Gooner

I am sure this whole deal doesnt revolve around Ade’s needs and in fact Arsenal are trying to get the best deal for the club.

After all Ade prefers Beyonce, not Oasis

  44. Adebayoooorrrrrr!!

give him the ball, and he will score!!!!!

  45. 49 hours, 41 minutes, 58 seconds

  46. chrisgoona, I appreciate you support the team at all costs, but your last post after everything that has happened with Ade seems like you are trying to wind us up for thinking Ade is a shameles money grabber. Then when someone winds you up you dont like it, hardly playing fair is it?

  47. Rasputin, half the time he couldn’t be bothered to get back onside in time, that was very, very frustrating. Dont have a go at him though Rasputin, you might upset him and he might join Man City, just let him do whatever the f#ck he likes, ok?

  48. OOU

Of course your timing was out for by the time that the post was completed and posted, the countdown had moved on. Or had you factored that into your calculations?

If so, what averages and algorithims were applied so that we can subject the calculation to the same scrutiny applied to Matt’s initial rumour…

    Your ever-so pedantic host.

  49. At least, Arsene Wenger would say something about this rumour mill before or after the match with Barnet. So that we would know the true picture of things.

  50. Gunner from Nigeia, Our club is not the best at keeping us informed. They always say untill its logged on the website then it isn’t true.

LA Gunner I think you’re right, we should say he has to go now, he shouldnt be able to mess us about like this

  51. James,

What are your views on AW? Do you think Chamakh will be a good buy?

  52. If he is going I wish he would just go so that the team can get on with its pre-season preparations without him. If this deal drags on does Wenger take him away on pre-season tours, or does he leave him at home and not give him match practice? If he plays him and he goes then we don’t have time to bed in a new formation even if we don’t buy any one else. I’m looking forward to Barnet on Saturday – I want to see Simpson, Vermaelen, Coquelin and Wilshire playing. Rosicky might even get a run out (hope he doesn’t fall over and have another set back).

  53. Come on, Ade. Take it to the wire and then refuse to sign. ‘Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner’ my favourite film.

    Adebayor, Adebayor….Adebayor, Adebayor

  54. Alex, you know I’m Jimbo dont you? I’ve changed my name to avoid confusion with that other fella.

Arsene Wenger is without a doubt one of the best managers in the world. What he does on our budget is nothing short of incredible, yeah he can be a bit stubborn sometimes but his pros massively outweigh his cons.

I dont know nothing baout Chamakh, my mate was satying he’s not as talented as Bendtner though, maybe Bendners will get his chance which he deserves, and chamakh will be our fourth striker

  55. Actually it could be the football transfer equivalent of Vanishing Point (1971 version)……also my favourite film.

Go Ade go….but stop before you hit that thing at the end.

    Adebayor, Adebayor…..Adebayor, Adebayor

  56. Adebaaaayooor….give him the baaaaaall….and he will score..

Come on, Ade. Tell Mark Hughes to shove it up his flipping jumper. I’ll say. What!

  57. Well the story goes back to a single moment in the summer of 1936. Alan Turing is sitting in the park bench on a tranquil afternoon, when “pffffffssddssgfffftttt”.

He observed the frequency of the oscillations, and the rest is history.

    Kowalski, the last American hero!

  58. Or maybe a football transfer equivalent of Indecent Proposal, only with a different ending. Demi Moore (Adebeyor) leaves Woody Harellson (Arsenal) in the shit, then goes and gives Robert Redford (City) a striptease.

  59. Or better still Ade, just fucking say you’re not leaving, if you’re not, and if you are piss off already.

  60. AW:’Arsene Citeh have come in for you. Interested?’
    Ade:’Nope’
    AW:’Want a bit of fun?’
    Ade: ‘What do you mean’
AW:’Gather round, listen up, son, this is how it works’
    …….
    Ade: ‘You serious?’
    AW:’Yep’

  61. I got those figures from the Arsenal site Henristic. I am not a big fan of stats to prove a point, but I think you will find that Ade was offside considerably more times than any other similar striker …. very frustrating…
    ——————-

The problem is not being caught offsides in itself. Lots of strikers get caught offsides, remember Fergie remaking that “Pipo (Inzaghi) was born offsides”.

What frustrates us is getting caught offsides just because he could be bothered to get back onside. Especially on goal kicks.

  62. Frank – If he’s going I don’t care what he hits on the way out as long as the cheque’s cleared.

  63. Well neither do I, Marc, but I don’t want him to go. He’s an Arsenal player, and a character. We specialise in characters. It is only our supporters who are really boring, miserable whingers. Not our players.

  64. Frank

Judging by some of the vitirol, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly might be more appropriate.

    YW

  65. I have made the comment before and I still stand by it… Ade should stay!

This team should be kept together, no more selling of key players.

Chelsea are refusing to sell Terry, no matter what!

But then again, AW does not like to kee unahppy players around…

    Oh well

  66. We dont need a bean pole striker. We dont need ade. We play like brazil. Fast passes and quick change of play. Ade couldnt keep up hence the gazillion offsides that he had. Its like having a dumb kid in a class full of A1 students. If arsene buys a donkey and stick it upfront, it will score 15 goals a season. Our team is that talented. As talented as brazil 1971.

  67. Also my favourite film, YW

  68. Denilson and Song are our only DMs and, they not really experienced. I hope we get one DM.

  69. Or better still Ade, just fu’cking say you’re not leaving, if you’re not, and if you are p1ss off already.

  70. ‘Its like having a dumb kid in a class full of A1 students’

    Funny

  71. Ole, Will you feel let down by Ade at all if he leaves or would you 100% blame the minority of fans who abused him? Serious question

  72. James,

What do you think of Adebayor’s interviews with the press?

  73. Gunner from Nigeria, You are correct they are not the finished article, Denilson is solid but thats about it, Song is dencent going forward but not as solid, sham we cant fuse them together like in the film ‘The Fly’, maybe add a dash of the incredible Hulk in there as well just to see what happens

  74. Alex, just complete bullshit really, always had a smug look on his face, the face of someone who’d made it and was happy and thought they had nothing to prove. What did you think?

  75. James, I think that if he was good as Arshavin at handling the press he would have still been with us.

  76. If i was ade i would come out and say on arsenal.com ” i am not interested in joining city or any other team. Not for any amount of money. I wish to stay at arsenal for a long time and repay the faith the gaffer has given me. I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to the fans especially for acting like a greedy pig last summer. I am responsible for acting like that thus i hold my hands up. I will make sure that will never happen again. I promise to work hard and learn how to stay onside in training. I will stay back for one hour just for that after training. I will never ever talk to my agent or the press again. I will sack my agent. From now on i will only give statements to arsenal.com. To mark hughes and dubai inc, u can stick ur petro dollars up ur arses. I love the arsenal. Thanks. E Adebayor”. Didnt take long did it lads?

  77. OG, the two links I sent you yesterday. I believe the source of the quotes from one of the stories was from that Adidas event. The now infamous one where one minute Ade stated his intention to stay prior to saying not so similar things minutes later. I understand your reply yesterday; that’s why I was asking if you had a story, similar to that which I directly linked to, that showed Ade saying those quotes were fictitious. Not sure what you were asking me after I provided you with direct links.

  78. Alex, but what about when he said one thing in the press conference and then went and said a completely different thing ten minutes later? That wasn’t bad handling of the press, that was a complete piss take and slap in the face to the fans. I swear its not me who’s thinking weird in this argument, its you lot, how you cant see that Ade has acted very unprofessionally is beyond me

  79. Really hope Westwood wins the Open this year.

Just thought i’d throw that in there

  80. Well if declines the “double your salary” offer and stays I will not hold any grudges against him..

Just hope he says the right words ..

  81. James, your press conference was what I was referring to yesterday. That particular Adidas event was the turning point for the fans. And I’m asking the likes of Ole to provide a link, as I did yesterday, to quotes from Ade retracting or smoothing over those statements. I don’t recollect seeing something of that sort.

  82. I guess if Ade spurns Man City, he’d still have work to do to win over the Gunner fans who’d still be thinking he’d jump to Barca or Milan were they the team offering 150,000 euro a week.

  83. I dont think he would still be with us if he handled the press any better, but I do think he has been (at best) incredibly naive with his dealings with the media.

It doesnt take much (IMO) to get the fans onside, RVP seems to play the media game nicely, it ain’t that difficult surely.

  84. Just saw that Hleb is reportedly being loaned out to Inter. See if he can get on the pitch there.

  85. ArseChicago,

The Telegraph quotes seem not to have been from the Adidas event.

The Mail ones certainly were. And those really weren’t pay me or I leave. Honestly that’s my point.

When we did hear from him, from Ade himself, (obviously he’d been tricked and thought he was talking off the record), his comments weren’t pay me or I leave. It was more like I’ll sit down with the club directors and they know what to do to keep me.

Anyway, the following link shows many quotes from Ade and Wenger on that saga last Summer. It’s a search result of Adebayor news on Arsenal.com from last Summer:

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive?srch=adebayor&month=8&year=2008&x=17&y=12

  86. Well atleast Hleb wont have to sneak out at night now to have his favourite ice cream.

  87. The silence is deafening.

Either they have ear plugs at preseason and none of them blog/ read newspapers. Or Its the usual arsenal way. Silence till when a deal is done.

  88. If Ade went to Citeh it would be for one of 3 reasons:

    1. He went for the money, damning sporting reasons.
    2. The club wanted him gone.
    3. His position at the club had become untenable, and he wasn’t ready to face the hate directed at him.

We might never know which of the three. I’d be fair, and until I know he went for reason 1, I won’t condemn him.

If he went for money it would bolster the moneygrabber narrative about him, but it would not be unique to him.

  89. Wengerball:

What frustrates us is getting caught offsides just because he could be bothered to get back onside. Especially on goal kicks.
    ————————————–
Wait a minute, you do know that offside rule does not apply in goal kicks, right?

  90. He’ll have to learn some Italian first. That will take another year, and hence less time on the pitch. Than he would be loaned to Lyon, where he would have to learn French, while again finding it difficult to adjust due to the language issue. Finally, he will find some peace, when he would say “F*** all this, I am going home”.

  91. I know, YW. Why don’t you just cut and paste all the comments from the last three days. Then everyone can get on with something else until the Barnet game. Some flipping comments will now go into moderation though, blow me down.

  92. Ateeb you are like the Joe Pasquale of blogland. Painfull

  93. Spot on Ateeb.

  94. Does anyone really think Wenger would ever want him back.If the club wanted him to stay would they have excepted Citys bid.Last year all this crap over would he go or stay had an effect on the teams start to the season according to Wenger. The same will happen again if he came back.Wenger needs to show strong management, which he should have done last summer, and get rid of Ade now.It could mean we wont be able to sign a defensive Midfielder now.
The press conference at Barnet will be very interesting

  95. Ateeb,

Before Hleb retires to a quaint little forest home outside Minsk he will issue a come and get me plea to AW.

  96. On that note Alex, apart from Keown, anyone know of an Arsenal player leaving and then coming back?

  97. to tell you the truth if another company head hunted me and told me that they would double my wages and blew hot air up my arse then (f*ck it) 2 tears in a bucket – id be gone.

if he does stay – fair play

if he does’nt thanks for the memories

    Ade – Badman – Bayor!!!!!!!!!!!!

loved the goals and the dances

  98. geeG – well said, you sound like a football fan to me.

  99. John Lukic?

  100. I cant think of anyone else steww but a large brigade of our fans would have you believe that Flamini will be the second one to do what Keown did.

  101. Quote from Ade’s agent, Courbis: “Affare concluso? Non ne so nulla, non so nemmeno se c’è un’offerta ufficiale del Manchester City… Dovete chiederlo direttamente al manager dell’Arsenal. Adebayor in questo momento si sta allenando con l’Arsenal, posso dire che nelle scorse ore non ho parlato con Arsene Wenger.”

Translation: “Deal done? Don’t know anything about it, I don’t even know if there’s been an official bid from Man City…you have to ask the Arsenal manager directly. Adebayor is right this moment training with Arsenal, I can say that in the last few hours I have not spoken with Arsene Wenger”.

original quotes from calciomercato.it it seems.

More confusion in the Adebayor soap opera.

  102. James/Jimbo,

F*ck off already. You’re an imbecile. Go slag Wenger off at that other shithouse blog.

  103. a blog on how Arse can flourish without Ade. Interesting read andd comments

  104. There has been nothing apart from some Mark Hughes quote about ‘possibly this maybe that’ which he’s done about lots of players.
It’s all speculation. The idiots who it flushed out into the open have shown their true colours.

  105. arsenalkabisa,

What’s the point of that article?

Before the moderation, the rapidity with which the word fuck was used put Joe Pesci in Goodfellas to shame.

  108. @YW

Edited due to being a potty mouth [YW]

    @OG

Interesting how Arsenal Fans are stereo typed now. Strange the phrase that Arsenal fans came up with a magazine for Ade

Lazy journalism at its best. Cant the BIB employ an Arsenal person to write about Arsenal? Its like a Christian writing about the Muslim faith or vice versa…

Sorry if you wanted news of something you don’t know already. Like deal confirmed…

  109. Nasir-Jones-Nasri, That wasn’t me who said those things, I’ve already said how highly I rate Wenger and I’ve changed my name (to my real name).

Now do yourself a favour Nasir and have a lie down, thinking as much as you just did must of taken alot out of you.

  113. We have had a bit of a rollercoaster ride with Ade, when he first joined us he was in Henry’s shadow – he looked promising, but seemed to have problems with his first touch. When Henry left Ade stepped up to the plate, having a blinding season leading the line for a team who just loved splitting defences. He was still a bit suspect on his first touch and his offsides, but you would never sub him as he worked hard right to the end of the match. When defences tired late in a game Ade would pounce and get his goal. Then the summer of discontent arrived and Ade, clearly following very bad advice, strutted around in front of the European press. Claiming he was as good as Henry and that if he didn’t get the money he deserved he would be off. Whilst every player has a right to fight his corner where his wages are concerned, he has to follow that up with performance in the following season to show the fans it was worth paying up for him. Unfortunately Ade didn’t put in the kind of season he should have, he was injured for some of the time, but he didn’t seem inclined to put in the same work rate as before. So now Ade’s agent is touting him around again and it seems, if the stories are true, that he is willing to use a Man City bid to solicit a more attractive offer from elsewhere, but do we want him to leave? The Ade of of 07/08 was a fantastic player, his work rate was phenominal and some of his touches were sublime. If we could have him back we would happliy reject the Man City offer, but unfortunately it looks like that player has gone so we might as well take the money.

  114. Cristiano went on to say that he loved it when his friends gifted him scented candles in a box enveloped by rose petals.

  115. Wavey,

Why does it look like the Ade of 07/08 is gone? Did he suffer a career ending injury?

  116. or did he not recover from seeing the Ghost of Beyonce??

  117. Ole Gunner,

he had an Arsenal career threatening case of “I can’t be arsed any more”.

  118. Yeah, he suffered from a severe bout of ‘I’m the bollocks-itis’

  119. The Adebayor situation is getting boring now. There so much conjecture and contradictory rumours that I really haven’t got a clue what’s going on. If the “I need a few days to think about it” rumours are true it looks like he’s still angling for a move to Barca, Milan or another major club.

This is a problem. If an offer from a major club doesn’t come along will he stay or will he go? If he stays will his heart really be in it? Will he be the Adebayor of 2 seasons ago or will he become a pain in the arse and cause disruption in the dressing room.

  120. Marc, that scenario has already happened last year. If it happens again it will be worse and could make us look weak. Some the young players may lose a bit of respect for the club. He is taking the piss. I dont want to get annoyed because people on here find it offensive even though the guys a complete prick

  121. with any luck he’ll do what most former Arsenal players do and pale into obscurity… Hleb, Flamini, Edu…

What a Greedy twat! He wont get in the Man City side ahead of Santa Cruz anyway… i’d love it if we somehow managed an exchange deal for Eto… he would win us the prem.

  122. FFS….guys. Can’t some of you simply grow up? Whose head wouldn’t be turned by a doubling of his or her salary? From 80 thous to 170 thous per week! Sh*t…my head would be turned in an instant.

  123. Crikey O’Riley, YW. You could have struck me down with a feather with that Goodfellas announcement. I can see I am going to have to learn a whole new vocab and thats a fact. Blimey who’d have thought it.

I still want Ade to stay though and I wish everyone would stop feeding off the press and media. Almost no facts as usual. What in the blazes is going on, chaps?

  124. James, transfers are often long and protracted in nature and going by the scale of some other long winded transfers in the past, this transfer is still in its initial stages. If you dont expect an annoucement or update regarding the deal you wont be disappointed.

  125. Alex, He’s had all year to sort this out, no one wanted him and now they;ve used City as ploy to get other clubs involved. I know thats the nature of the business but its unfair and annoying for us to be caught in the middle of it dont you think?

  126. Wavey,

I think your opinion is ridiculous because every single human can be motivated. Somehow Wenger got him to score 6 goals in 8 CL games last season, including 2 important 1/4 final goals. Somehow Wenger got him to continue scoring 1 goal every 2 games such that if he’d had 60 games he’d have scored over 20 goals.

  127. Shotta

Have you not yet realised that when you are a footballer, earning a salary of £170k is deemed greedy.

Were you or I offered that salary, it would be ‘good on you, mate’ to your face and probably a whole world on jealousy behind your back.

    YW

  128. Well one thing is for sure, AW’s press conference on Saturday should throw some light on the subject.

    Should be interesting!

  129. Nice to know that I have a ridiculous opinion!

How can anybody truly believe that we can just wind time back to two seasons ago and everything will be fine?
Is Ade suddenly going to say that it was all a mistake and put in a blinding season up front?
Does Wenger really want the hassle of having to kick the guy up the arse every 5 mins when he has a sulk?
Surely we want a player who wants to play for us, not one who plays under a cloud all season?

  130. ‘Ade nice day today. ‘Ade a good read of this blog. ‘Ade to say some right old shite being spoken. so ‘Ade to big up Ade. Is there another like him?

Come on Ade!! Legs like a giraffe. He’s good.

Do I like him? Yep. Let’s see what the gaffer says. Until then WTF. If he’s in training with us, great news.

  131. Jolly good, ZP. I agree.

  132. Crimey Frank!

  133. I can see no reason why Ade cannot put in a flipping good season if given the opportunity.

  134. Or is that supposed to be crickey? Or blimey?

  135. Now you are getting the hang of it, ZimPaul.

  136. Flippin moses! Or eeeewe, aikona, sure chokwadi as we say!

  137. Hells’ teeth man! Ya, no …. OK, maybe.

  138. Great walloping wails!

  139. One comment I often hear that strikes me as a fallacy is that we need a big striker to play against big teams. I can see how that might be the case if we really need an areal threat. But in attack I think it can be more effective to create mismatches and let the defense worry about what kind of player they need. Large defenders often have a hard time marshaling smaller, quicker players (if those players can find space), while quick defenders can be physically overpowered. There are cases when a defender is just overpowered — Torres’ speed and strength was just too much for Vidic last year, for example. But that is a case where a combination of attributes makes a player unplayable — to quick for the big guys and too strong for the quick guys…

  140. What if it just turned out that Ade stayed? I think he’s gone. But hypothetically what would happen if he stayed.

Wavey, James & other Ade haters. Over to you. What would you do?

  141. .

  142. YW, exactly, he’s well compensated, why you guys treat him like a victim I really dont understand

  143. Ole gunner, since the mission is to suck the joy out of all things Arsenal, and more generally football, they would nitpick, gripe, moan, groan and then when he reaches 30 goals, transform into the greatest Ade supporters. “Who me?”. “I always knew he ‘ade it in ‘im”.

  144. Ole Gunner, If he stays and shows some effort the fans will forgive him in an instant

  145. Never fear, OG, old bean. He ain’t gone yet regardless of the codswallop these fellows are spouting, and thats a fact. ZimPaul and I are full square beside you.

  146. Ole, he wont stay though, I’d bet my house on it (not really, I just said that for dramatic impact)

  147. I think he might stay, OG.

  148. I wish Queen of Sub was here, I enjoy reading here well thought out, diplomatic posts

  149. Why don’t you write a well thought out diplomatic post yourself, insread of just rambling on.

Speaking of which I had better go, Lady Neena and Peter will need feeding after the crossing.

  150. Since the theme of the day is idle speculation, here’s mine (after chatting to a good ol’ sauce at the the club, close to sshh you-know-who).

Ade is staying. He is practicing right now as a left-footed player. And has switched to midfield.

  151. In your own words, F#ck off, frank

  152. Wenger – master tactician, especially at dealing with people. Must be laughing right now.

  153. I have never written that word in my life, James.

  154. 1 more day to Pre-season…

  155. Ole, if Ade stays I hope he does brilliantly. But it would very tough for him — both with the fans and with his teammates. The dude would have to work his ass off to impress either of those groups.

  156. Zimpaul, I dont think Wenger will be laughing, I think he will be thoruoughly pissed off he doesn’t have a settled team, behind closed doors of course

  157. I like a bit of good ol sauce myself, ZP. Speaking of which my seventh wife is demanding my attention.

  158. James, at this site we hug, we do not say such things. Well Frank, you know, has rights and responsibilities. But, oh no, not you. First show you actually support Arsenal. Do you? How?

    Come on Adebyaaaaaaaayor!! you beauty.

  159. ZimPaul, sorry I didnt realise you was a crack head

  160. Arsenal!!!! The best, and the best, and the best.

  161. He will be fine with his teammates. The ‘fans’. Why should he give a flip about them? They can hardly be worse than they were last season. Arsenal ‘fans’ are whingers and most are a bit simple. Two goals against Everton and they will be happy….and I don’t suppose he reads blogs.

  162. Mightily said James. And mighty sad too.

  163. The fact that the deal hasn’t been done as of this minute suggests to me that it isn’t a despising of Arsenal (or just its supporters) that’s fuelling a desire to leave. Rather, I really think it was/is him being enamored with clubs he deems more prestigious, such as Barca or Milan. Again, if it were about simply getting away from the Emirates or more about money, this deal would’ve been done.

If he does stay, and it does seem a much more real possibility with every fleeting minute, I will support him and the club. Does this mean I’ll be watching at the pub and not shout at the screen when the offsides flag goes up? No. But I won’t be booing him like I’m sure some folks will be. I don’t believe in the booing of your club and its players. Assuming they’re not intentionally scoring own goals or something like that.

  164. ArseChicago, I’d respect him more if he left for Milan or Barca for a lower wage. If he stayed he’s got to send out a message to the fans that he’s alienated himself from, maybe do a few shirt signing sessions or something

  165. I dont think the teammates have a problem with him. Havent read any player complaining about him. On the contrary Cesc, has come out and praised his efforts on more than one occassion. And so have other players.

  166. I agree with Ateeb

  167. I would like him to stay, the moderate fans who love the club will forgive for the benefit of the club If he scores a few goals they will be fine and singing his name. The core haters of the player will hate him regardless if he stays or if he leaves, they hated him when he scored 30 goals..nothing we or he can do about those.

But…for me, I think it’s time now for Ade to make up his mind by today or tomorrow and before the start of pre-season. Either come out and say I will try my best, or say sorry I need to go.

I hope it’s “I will try my best”.

  168. Gunner4ever, no one hated when he scored 30 goals, he was immense that season

  169. I agree with Ateeb; the players won’t have a problem with Ade. And I agree with James in that if he wants the fans back in his corner, he needs to come out and make his sugary declarations of love for all things Arsenal. I really do think that the supporters that really love the club would err on the forgiving side of things. All would be forgiven if he notched a winning goal at Goodison Park. Again, the big question is what is Wenger’s state of mind regarding Ade? Would he just sit Ade to start the season, thus picking up on where last season ended?

  170. James

What has his salary got to do with a move to any other club? Perhaps he believes that he has more chance of silverware with City than at Arsenal with all their high falutin’ spending plans. After all, he has been here for most of the Abramovich era and seen that money can buy the title.

That Chelsea were further down that road than City as a starting point is where the theory falls down in the short term.

Plus they didn’t have Mark Hughes as a manager.

    YW

  171. I simply cannot express my disregard for Mark Hughes, strongly enough.

  172. No one said
he should have scored 50 not 30
and he misses to many chances
and he never heard of the offside rule
    His penalties doesn’t count

All that crap? I didn’t say those are the majority, but there are a fw who hate the player regardless of what he did or didn’t do.

  173. The best thing about City is Mark Hughes, it means we dont have to worry about them this season

  174. YW, I’m assuming James was suggesting that he respects any player that takes less money to be on a club that the player feels has a better chance of winning or greater ambitions. Clearly Man City is showing ambition, and we might feel that they have a better chance at winning than does Chelsea, or Milan, but we don’t know how Adebayor is forecasting the world of football these days. My belief is that it’s less about who he realistically feels will win silverware this year or next; for him, I think it’s being on a marquee club like Barca or Milan.

  175. You missed the Derby goals, G4E. Never forget them.

  176. “While Togo international Adebayor has hinted that he would prefer to stay at Arsenal….”

From a headline story in goal.com from I think 30 minutes ago. Not sure what hints they’re getting other than this longer than expected period of inaction.

  177. One of my sources at Arsenal told me that Adebayor handed in a transfer request after Wenger said he would play him as a defensive midfielder next season. As you all know, every player at Arsenal is expected to be able to play in more than one position. (Sagna at left-back and in goal, for example, and Almunia in goal and on the left wing) Adebayor is the only player who has managed to play in only one position. Wenger is of course famous for converting players from one position to another, having moved Petit from centre-back to central midfield in 1997.

  178. What s gunner happen if Ade stays?????

  179. Apparantly 95% of Arsenal fans want to see the back of Ade!!!

  180. Oh so that was the real reason for all this drama PZ. Its only fair that we get more bang for our buck with players playing in all positions. I loved it when Almunia charged down that left flank and crosses for Sagna who avoided the offside trap and outjumped Vidic to head home.

  181. DG

Actually the probable poll results would be:

1% tell him to bugger off
    20% want him to stay
79% if someone wants him for £25m, let him go. The club will go on.

    YW

  182. Y.W. at 4:50 pm: Yogi – You’ve noticed how the greedy, lazy perjorative applies to everyone else but me.
As Frank said earlier, too many on this blog are too sanctimonious; they have turned hypocrisy into an art form.
    Rant over!

  183. HHHmmm. 1% tell him to bugger off. People who like Ade are in the minority for some reason.

  184. YW,

If that’s the distribution of Arsenal fans on the Ade issue, I’ll be very pleased and will feel very assuaged. My fear is that it seems a very loud 20% or more want him to bugger off.

  185. Alex,

My personnel favourite was Theo saving that penalty against Roma. He almost went the other way, but his pace allowed him to make up for the hesitation, as he manage to get his fingertips to the ball. Brilliant.

  186. I was just watching a replay of the 2nd leg against Villareal on Arsenal tv. Watched Ade’s goal. I’m confused. Everyone is saying we should let a player who is a poor finisher and has a bad 1st touch go. Can’t be the same player I was watching.

  187. It’s interesting that Ole is the only one who posted a link to a story with some actual quotes but no one has jumped on that because if true it suggests that we might have all been taken in by a giant hoax

  188. the void is loud./.

  189. Will the Chelsea fans boo Terry now! I know the Arsenal fans would.

  190. Frank and Ateeb, if someone had written “Ade’s teammates will hate him” you would ask “how do you know what they think?” — But apparently you do, you know they they will be fine with him. I’m not so sure. They are professionals and will play with him, I have no doubt about that. But compare his behavior to Cesc, who could easily try to renegotiate his contract on the basis of Barca’s never-ending interest. Some players do affect chemistry negatively. If Henry, who was always a gentleman, could have a negative influence, then I have little doubt that Ade could.

  191. Well, we have signed Jamie Edge from Cheltenham and some striker from Montenegro…

  192. Passenal, where is that link from Ole G? what time did he post it?

  193. Passenal

    Potential problems with the story:

    1. It is from the Italian press who are just as capable of ours of making things up.
    2. Is Courbis his agent? We assume so.
    3. Were this actually the case and it was a hoax, Arsenal would have been all over it for the player’s sake in much the same way they were for Cesc, Sagna, etc.

It is the deafening silence from the club that speaks volumes to most people.

    YW

  194. dukegoonem, Terry could be faced with a lot of ire from Chav fans even if he decided to stay back with a raise if one goies by the sentiment on their blogs currently.

  195. We all have our take on the Ade saga. I don’t find it credible that he is holding out for more money.

Based on the interview on BBC at the end of last season my guess is that on one hand he is not happy or feeling secure at Arsenal, but is still proud to play for a club that is seen as a big prestigous club in Africa.

So his decision is to go to Man City and loose a large amount of self esteem, or stay at Arsenal and face the insults of fans which he will also find difficult to face.

  196. DG

Nope, I don’t think Arsenal fans would have. IIRC, Adams was publicly tapped up by United decades ago and no backlash was felt.

Now that was a different time in terms of perceptions but look at the less than negative reaction to the Cesc stories.

Different players evoke different reactions in people.

    YW

  197. Passenal, I provided a few links yesterday. This one from the Telegraph puts forth quotes from Adebayor.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/arsenal/2304361/Arsenal-striker-Emmanuel-Adebayor-interested-in-Barcelona-move.html

Since I don’t live over there and don’t really have experience with the veracity of stuff printed in the papers over there, I can’t say who I’m to believe. I’m more likely to put weight in the quotes provided by OG that were on the Arsenal.com site. That all being said, I was fully on board supporting Ade at the outset of last season, as were I’d say the majority of supporters. If he’s starting day 1 this season, it will be the same for me. However, what exacerbated or maybe underpinned the frustration of Arsenal supporters with his perceived performance on the pitch was the increased money he got and the questions regarding the various quotes of questionable veracity attributed to him in the offseason.

  198. I agree with YW @6:39 the pre-season is just around the corner.

The player now has to come out and say what he will do and get this over with, so we can move on with our preparation for the new season.

That silence means something is 50/50

  199. YW,
I feel with Cesc, he’s demonstrated a habit of coming out very quickly after these stories are printed in the Spanish papers to debunk them. Even the one quote I believe where the word “impotencia” was apparently used, he came out that day or the next to clarify. Additionally, I think the supporters have been more conditioned to have these false stories printed about Cesc as they’ve been a fact of life each of the last handful of seasons, yeah? This past offseason was really the only one in earnest with a flurry of Ade-related rumors and quotes. Anyway, I think caution must be used in assessing quotes from all players whose primary language is not English. God knows what I’d say if I had to answer questions in Spanish. But back to comparing fan reaction to Ade versus Cesc. To Ade’s detriment, not scoring as many goals as fans would like hurts a striker much, much more than it does a midfielder.

  200. I really hope Ade stays.

I dont know, if Ade does leave he is going to make a lot of people think they we right about him. Not that he cares but I hope his motives are more than money if he does go.

Again, I would much prefer him stay.

  201. I think the smart things is not to do so many interviews or maybe just refuse to answer questions about staying or leaving, so you dont give clowns any ammuntion to chat foolishness!

  202. AC

Summer 08 was not quiet on the Ade front either, especially when “Team Adebayor” turned up at Euro2008. They may have been there for other reasons – charitable I believe – but it quickly turned into a three-ringed circus about rumours of a move to Barcelona or AC Milan, a situation in no little amount contributed to by the player.

    YW

  203. It does seem that there really is something on. The closest person I have to an insider insists a deal has been done. But then it seems not. Why would Arsenal want to keep a player in pre-season who won’t be there when the season starts? That suggests the deal hasn’t been done. Unless Courbis was fibbing. The Italian media are as bad as the ones in England, and can make up quotes. It’s just so frustrating that you just cant believe ANYTHING in the media….

Here’s the lates info from the Citeh side. Apparently Hughes said today that; “”The transfer window is still open and we do need new players. Talks are on in the current situation (over Adebayor) and we are still in discussions and the talks will continue,” Original source: http://www.gulfnews.com/sport/Football/10331999.html

  204. Arse Chicago, I’m talking in relation to the alleged transfer to Man City.

YW, I don’t doubt that, but why is one given more credibility than the other? There may have been talks, but Arsene has always said Ade will leave only if he wants to go, which suggests he is just as happy to keep him.

It would be good to draw a line under this one way or another so that we can all move on.

  205. Right, last offseason was the first one I felt there was a flurry of rumors. Obviously this summer, summer 09, qualifies.

In terms of this Man City stuff, the other thing that has to enter the equation for Adebayor is playing time. Seriously not a given that he’d be in the starting 11 more games than he wouldn’t.

  206. Does anyone know if Adebayor is actually in pre-season as at yesterday/today?

  207. Ray Parlour Parlour

We love you our Ray Parlour

    You messed up on Adebayor

    Ray Parlour Parlour

    Tune of Que Sera Sera

  208. I am thinking it is rather tiring to constantly come out and deny things, maybe and hopefully Ade learned from last year so he doesnt want to keeo talking? I hope this is the case, we are stronger side with Ade in my opinion.

  209. I dont ever think a former players should come out and trash a current player, even if its true, very unprofessional.

  210. [...] Good Grief, Is He Still Here? (A Cultured Left Foot) “First of all, every thought should go to John Hartson and his family following the neurosurgery he underwent yesterday as a result of his cancer. By comparison the transfer news is trivial. It might not be in the minds of the individuals involved but in the greater scheme of things, it is. Adebayor is apparently stalling on the deal. The media, no doubt fed by the disgruntlement at Arsenal and hoping to pass it onto Manchester City fans.” Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)Time for FIFA to chop the “deadwood”Pro Vercelli: The Ghosts of 1910What’s wrong with Italian soccer?[ Video ] Adebayor frustrated by Arsenal fans [...]

  211. I agree Paul N, it depends on your motivation, if it’s about getting your name in the paper on the back of a hot story that could lead to some pundit or newspaper hackery…

  212. Or Ray Parlour was just giving his own, honest opinion…

Fruity I know, but it might just be the case here…

  213. Exactly Passenal, what is the point of saying anything? it doesnt change the situation at all, only gives these dudes crap to write as you rightfully say.

Spike, everyone has an opinion man! Fact is as far as we know Ade is still an Arsenal player. Ade hasnt said a word so why blast the fellow?

  214. I’m betting Spike, that if you always just gave your opinion to your wife without regard to tone, or sensitivity to situation, you’d get into trouble often.

The question is not if Ray has an opinion it’s how he expresses it, to who, and with what level of moderation.

  215. Paul N, Ades said enough already, now when we’d love him to say something, he keeps silent. The Guys a class act

  216. PaulN;

Erm, probably because he was asked a series of questions, while on a radio phone in! The formate kinda requires guests to give answers to questions!

True, he maybe should’ve said he cannot possibly answer any questions relating to Ade, as they might give a negative image/view point of Arsenal and Adebayor too…

I hate it when the likes of Ian Wright spout their bile on radio and in his horrendous ghost written tabloid shite… He HAS an agenda, I just don’t think Ray does, of course, I cannot be 100% sure, but I would like to think that he does have the club in his heart and was only giving a frank response to questions fired at him…

  217. Very good read on how our recruiting system works: http://www.football.fr/footballfr/cmc/mag/200929/le-recrutement-selon-arsenal_70222.html

  218. Just in from Japans leading Mens magazine ,Soaking Lentils puts forth more recenter quotes from Adebayor.

“I make moves and boss all across the world
so don’t be upset if I toss your girl
I got cheddar to blow, pockets never get low
Bitches sweat me wherever I go
I cruise in a GS Lex’, Cartier specs
Nautica sweats with the fresh Gortex
Jewels with baguettes, swingin like the Mets
Throwin the dice and takin all size bets
Never bummy; sip rummy, get money
When I hit honies you felt the dick in her tummy.”

  219. Spike, what is Ian Wrights agenda.

    1. He says Wenger needs to buy inly a couple of players to make us title challengers – He was correct.

    2. He says if we dont spend money and bring in quality players, some senior players may want to leave – He was correct.

Ian Wright is an Arsenal legend, anyone who says different is not an Arsenal fan

  220. Maybe Arsenal need a spin doctor of the ilk in that movie; “In the Loop” ??? Peter capaldi is the actor’s name… Now he wouldnt allow any player, current or ex to make ANY kinda comments to any fucker… not even their own wives and girlfriends/boyfriends (come on! Move with the times)

  221. ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

  222. James;

He comes out and states if he was playing he would be playing for the chavs, he says that Henry shouldve gone to barca, he bigs up the spuds, even saying he supports them, he says we are gonna lose to, erm Roma, just before we play em, he syas Denilson is shite, he says a lot of things, all of them negative…

As a player he WAS legend, as a man/minor radio celeb, he is a cunt.

  223. And those are only the ones I can remember, there are shed loads more…

  224. Oh yeah. He works for the Sun and Talkshite radio!

Fact is, he uses his past associations with Arsenal FC to line his pockets and what does he do? Pretend to have an affinity with the club/supporters.hand wringing about how his ‘beloved’ Arsenal are in a terrible state, how Villa/Everton/man City/spuds are just about to over take em and all the time, this negativity is doing a f*ckin great job on spreadin the doom and gloom innit???

Yeah, really good Gooner we have there…

  225. Spike come on man, you dont honestly believe that do you? Its Ian Wright for gods sake. Are you younger then twenty years old?

  226. Spike,

Ray could have said. “£25M is a lot of money. Adebayor’s standing with a section of the fans is down to zero. I personally wasn’t happy with some of his performances last season. The player will say he was injured a couple of times in the season, but I personally think he wasn’t trying enough”.

    Instead he said:

“He was too lazy at times last season and just didn’t do it.

“His body language wasn’t great. He has a big contract, which maybe is because he had a good season the year before – but he needs people behind him getting on his back.socks

“Wenger will not stand in his way because they can get a lot of money for him and then get a very good player to replace him. His attitude amazed me at times last season when he just didn’t put it in.

“Sometimes if things are not going well for you, you have to show desire.”

Parlour then said that the reported fee of £30 million was a bonus for Arsenal, continuing, “At first I heard £30m bandied around, and I’d snap their hand off at that price.

“Then you go and get an excellent player who will work his socks off.”

  227. Ole / Spike, Pundits have to tell the truth, or near enough the truth anyway, everyones seen it so if they lie it will just be being biased.

How about blaming Adebeyor for being lazy? Instead of Ray Parlour, a man who sweated blood for Arsenal. Thats pretty messed up you’ve lost all perspective

  228. Ole;

Do you want the job as chief spin doctor at Arsenal communications PLC?

    James;

I appreciate that what I am saying goes against the grain for a lot of Gooners, and believe me, it aint something I arrived at easily! It has happened over a period of time and after many many articles and moputhing off on the radio with that over horrendous tw*t too!

He has sold his soul to the devil! Hope that isnt overstating it now???

  229. James;

Why was my name on that last point of yours?

Care to read back and correct YO self bruvver?

  230. pundits are like cuttlefish

    belief is 1 percent

  231. Spike I agree Durham is a moron but his job is to incite debatem so he talks bullshit on purpose. Most of the gooner fans that ring in agree with wright because he is telling the truth as he sees it. Its not up to pundits to make players do thre jobs well. Dealing with pressure and media attention and fan negativity has always been prt of the game. If Ade has a bad game, theres only one person to blame and thats Ade. Its this player power bullshit thats ruining football

  232. Spike, yeah sorry mate you agree about Parlour

  233. OG – Parlour was just parroting back what some fans have been saying. He obviously believes that view is widespread and by ‘giving the people what they want’ he is making himself popular with the masses. It’s the same thing Ian Wright does, which is why as much as I admire what he did for the club as a player, I no longer have any respect for him as a ‘pundit/media spokesperson’. They are doing what they are doing for money, so what is so different from trying to maximize your income based on your skill as a footballer.

  234. James;

Why are you even mentioning Ade here? My beef with Wright stems from months of garbage he has spouted…

And of course pundits are biased! You only have to see the preferential treatment some get, compared to others….

  235. James;

I have got no problem with an ex-player givng an honest opinion, but when you have a nice cushy radio show, that kinda relies on being sensationalist and tabloid, it means you have to think up new dramas and traumas on a daily basis…

I bet the fella hardly remembers what sh*t he has said anyway!

  236. Spike, I really dont see it. I like Ian Wright and share alot of views. He’s a good guy and is definitely a gooner.

Ok some pundits are biased, pricks like Andy Grey and Redknapp, but Ian Wright isnt one of them

  237. Spike, all he ever talks about is that if Wenger bought one or two players to compliment the kids then we’d be challenging. The other thing he talks abou about is how we will struggle keep our top players if were not challenging, and he’s spot on.

Wengers project was amazing and he almost pulled it off but even he’s admitted we need a little bit more at the back

  238. You see, James, sharing your views and being a gooner are mutually incompatible. So which is it?

  239. James;

You obviously are referring to recent Wright comments. I wouldnt know as I do not listen to him, or anyone on Talkshite…

If he is saying that now, then, it is kinda dull and boring compared to the snide shite he has said in the past.

  240. :for all that’s good about Wright, he speaks his mind but isn’t as sharp a tool, as he was a striker.. As for the other filth.______

  241. Poliziano, Its not incompatible. People should share there views and the players should take responsibility for themselves, whats wrong with that?

Supporters support there team when there making an effort, players who make no effort and dont give a toss aren’t going to be supported as much are they?

  242. If James thinks pundits always tell the truth, he must have missed something in his life experiences.

90% of the time pundits talk sh1te. 5% sense. 5%horsesh1te

  243. The problem with guys like Ray Palour, Ian Wright and Paul Merson is that they believe that the 1990s is the same as the 2000s. When Abramovich came in 2003 the scene totally changed. You can forget a club winning a domestic trophy unless they have at least 100 million pounds worth of investment (Portsmouth FA Cup – 2008, Spuds Crappy Cup 2008).

Of course, they realise this too, and moan about big name players not arriving. Ian Wright and Paul Merson inparticular never seem to acknowledge what Arsene has achieved on expenditure equivalent to a mid table club. The problem with their arguments is that they are always looking at what they perceive to be the one or two players that are supposed to make the difference, without ever conceding that injuries, bad luck or being outspent by a factor of 4 are additional reasons for falling short.

  244. That’s the problem: Ian Wright is as sharp as a tool.

  245. Ole Gunner, most pundits talk shite because they are thick as shit, but not necessarily biased shite. Some do yeah, but alot of them tend to criticise there own team the worst

  246. Ian Wright lost my respect. I comletely disagree with some of his nonsense. Like Wenger is ruining Walcott’s career by not playing him as striker and utter tripe like that.

I still respect Ray Parlour. Complete and utter legend who messed up on BBC.

  247. How did he mess up on the BBC OG ?

  248. Chamakh sounds like a good replacement for Ade. I cannot believe Arsene would hold up the deal to keep Silvestre. He is past his sell-on date

  249. Plus I do think Wright does have an issue woth Wenger not playing him in the 98 FA cup final and the fact he was off loaded the following season. Thats just my own opinion, maybe I shouldve kept it to myself!

Ian Wright did once say, on BBC that Sven G Eriksson, purposely did NOT pick his son SWP, simply to get at Wright senior!

  250. He pissed in Alan hansens coffee, apparantly…

  251. When I’ve seen Ian Wright working as a pundit on the BBC, his colleagues have been almost incredulous at the rubbish he talks.

  252. Muppet,

I felt his comments about Ade’s transfer to Man City on BBC, some pasted above, were rather extreme. His tone was wrong. He was so damning on a current Arsenal player. It all sounds really wrong.

  253. Well, the story was PZ, that Ian Wright resigned from the BBC because he thought he was being showcased as a clown, a kind of court jester, a figure of fun. Of course, we know from Talk Shite that he’s a serious career professional who offers original and insightful opinion as only an ex-pro could.

  254. A couple of questions for those in the know.

a)Why does Ade need a work permit,if he is already working in the UK.Does that apply if he moves to City only,as there is no mention of him needing one if he stays.

b)I am getting mixed messages, that the only one holding up the deal is Ade himself. If so,and it falls through, what does AW do and how will he and some of the other players react ?

  255. Can someone tell Usmanov that Everton’s looking for a billionaire?

  256. Muppet;

Yeah, Wright was amazed to discover that his views were not seen as entirely ground breaking and high brow…

    Talking exclusively to The Beano, Wright went on;

“Its a fackin liberty I tells ya, there I woz, givin it large and these lah di dah Julians at the beeb are tellin me they are lovin the clownin Im doin at half time…. Clown stuff? I screams, you’re avin a bubble fellaaintcha?…Thats right proper football genius mate…fackin liberties”

  257. OG,

Right. Well what worries me about all this guff is the extent to which the opinion is original. Someone on the radio was complaining that Ade’s 30 goal haul in 2008 was inadequate because he had more opportunities, and it should have been 50. I certainly don’t remember him being as profligate as that in 2007-2008, so to me it seems like another harsh opinion. If I recall, Ronaldo didn’t have the same season as the previous year, and there are other players who the finger can be pointed at in the premier league.

  258. Ole, Adebeyor is the person who has dont it, why are you intent on blaming everyone except the person responsible? Even Arseal legends. Taking someone like Adebyors side who cant wait to leave Arsenal over someone like Parlour’s side who gave all for Arsenal is wrong, wrong, wrong

  259. Yeah PZ, even pundits as thick as Lawrenson and Hansen seemed shell shocked at the baselessness of some of Wrighty’s comments. He was a great player but is small minded and hopelessly outdated in his football views.

  260. kelsey;

My understanding is that, as a new employer, Ade would need one to work at City.

Who really knows what is holding up the deal? The rumours are it is Ade… either to try and wait for interest from bara/Milan/etc, or coz he wants more wages…. Nothing concrete though and just pernicious hackery, IMO.

  261. Muppet, I’d be anooyed if idiots like Hansen and Lawrenson were talking down to me, wouldn’t you?

  262. And what’s your point James ?

  263. Shut up, James. It’s nothing to do with Hansen or Lawrenson talking down to Ian Wright. At best, Wright repeats incoherently what one of the other pundits has just said. Often, he just seems to say “do you know what I mean” again and again. At his worst, well…the less said about that the better.

  264. Since, James, your opinions about Arsenal are identical to Hansen’s and Lawrenson’s, I don’t see why you should call them idiots. I haven’t noticed that you are superior to them in any respect.

  265. Spike,

other foreign players change clubs within the Pl, do they have to apply for work permits as well. It is just something i haven’t heard mention before.Tevez is a recent example.

i still find it unsettling on the club, two days before pre season starts, even though i accept Ade wouldn’t be playing at Barnet.Furthermore,I don’t believe any other club are in for him, that’s the quandry I was referring to for AW

  266. Poliziano, why do people on here always have to get personal? Were talking about football. You wouldnt want me to get personal about you would you?

  267. recently RVP said he was approached by Man city and turned them down despite the high wages so Ade must be feeling bad about going to Man city if its Milan or Barca then no one will question his move. But its his life and its his career wether its the wrong or right decision he will have to live with that. Also his salary will be doubled an that is not something you dismiss easily he supports his people in Africa so if he gets that money I’ll be happy for him. Well as long as he doesn’t come back to haunt us.

  268. Muppet, I dont actually know what my point is, I lost it somewhere along the way.

    Ian Wright is cool

  269. good interview with gille grimandi, thanks og

  270. Kelsey;

I only read the work permit thing somewhere! I assumed all players had to re-apply for WPs every year, regardsless of whether they cange clubs or not?

But, I do know that when we have signed players, a work permit is usually the 1st thing that gets sorted…

  271. I’m blaming Ray for his comments. When Ade talks tosh, which is often, I also recognise that.

Can you find similar comments of ex-players of a club talking with such strong terms about a current player who might be transferred?

  272. Quote attributed to Arshavin on Sky:

“”He is an excellent striker. Everybody knows him and he can score from nothing. But it is his decision whether he wants to stay or he wants to go”.

  273. Well James, to be fair, of course, I don’t think any man is going to take kindly to be ridiculed, unless they have a similar disposition to some of the doomers on this blog.

I think the point is that some of our pundits are not seeing the big picture, which is that the board and AW have decided to steer a long term evolutionary course towards success. This vision has been spelled out continuously be the club but pundits like Ian Wright and Paul Merson just want to whine about the lack of 20 million pound signings.

Yes… Ian Wright is cool, I like Ian Wright… but I wouldn’t listen to his opinion on matters related to Arsenal, unless it’s just confined to his experiences as a player.

  274. Lawrenson, Hansen and Wright all talk gibberish…they do so in different accents and mannerisms

  275. James, maybe Ade has said a lot in the pass but realized what happened.

    “once bitten twice shy”

    This is my hope.

Spike, Arsenel players both former and present should keep their feelings inside if it going to hurt the team.

  276. Ade should stay and do a flamini – if he has a fantastic season then he might be able to go to a bigger club abroad, meanwhile he helps Arsenal to a trophy and we still get a decent fee for him as he is under contract. I would rather not watch him in the PL because he could easily come back to haunt us especially if he feels he needs to prove something to the doubters.

  277. Wrighty loves to be loved by everybody and that is the way he is very rarely you hear him having a dig at Sp..e..r..cum (Sorry Imeant to say the Scum) or Manure he even defended Ronaldo antics. I just wish he would stick up for Arsenal a bit more. Whatever he says the guy has make a living.

  278. @ ole

    nice one from arshavin

  279. PaulN;

Then we definitely need that Peter Capaldi character from the “In the Loop” movie then!

  280. positive energy activates constant elevation.

  281. Spike, sorry can’t relate, never saw the movie.

    Can you explain

  282. Sorry, its basically a parody of the type of spin Dr Alastair campbell was supposed to be… Only even more like a Rottweiler whose every other word was a profanity…

Complete ring of steel in terms of communications….

  283. Naah, to hell with the media! Propaganda only works when accompanied by censorship. The political spin-doctors (so called) have only ensured that politicians can never speak without being suspected of lying. Politicians are seen more or less as stand-up comedians.

  284. Got you, thanks!

  285. I think Ole was advocating the Alastair Campbell approach actually! Any ex-player even suspected of goin to give a vaguely negative Arsenal story, gets his knee caps smashed!

  286. I was going for the ex-players shouldn’t crap all over current players approach. Have your opinion but don’t slam anybody. Not nice.

  287. They could just play Birmingham City instead.

  288. Wow, may of the folks are smashing Ade on Vitalfootball Arsenal.

    http://www.arsenal.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=515251

They are usually very positive over there. I hope Ade proves many wrong. This story has a real negative feel to it, more so than any I remember. He will be a hated player if He makes this move.

    Come on Ade!!

  289. I think that Ade should stay. He is an Arsenal player. Quite a good one. I watched the celebrations after RvPs goals on Arsenal.com. Ade is definitely one of the squad. Always has been. The only people who you can’t trust to get behind Arsenal players are Arsenal supporters.

  290. I agree Frank, I am hoping that whats in the press is false. I hope!

  291. Arshavin on Skysports: http://www.skysports.com/video/clips/0,23791,,00.html

  292. Adebayor will always be synonymous with Arsenal. He is in our blood. Part of our culture. He must stay.

  293. I hope he stays too. Why let the negativity drive you out to a club you don’t really want to go to? Even the money is no compensation.

  294. In many ways Emmanuel Adebayor is quintessentially Arsenal. Our best players are characters. Not always easy to get on with, but hugely talented three dimensional characters.

  295. Yes Yes Yes, Come on Ade, we love and appreciate you, well, some of us do.

  296. “The only people who you can’t trust to get behind Arsenal players are Arsenal supporters.”

And some ex Arsenal players it seems.

  297. AW has implied he is going to play a 433, this would probably mean a frontline of Arsh, RVP and Eduardo due to the need of mobile strikers. So Adebayor would be Plan B (albeit a good one) . So isn’t 25mill a good deal for your plan B when you have Bendtner, Walcott and Vela as backup also.

  298. Absolutely Frank! The Ade haters say he’s disruptive in the dressing room. Watch the team celebrations. Ade seems well-liked.

You know an angle that just occurred to me. I haven’t seen a Denilson or Song-bashing article this week. Nobody slamming Almunia or Gallas.

Maybe this Ade story has a silver lining afterall!!

  299. Bragging Rights News Corporation

    Newsflash

Armchair managers sign up for the coming season and reiterate their love for Arsenal FC.

As word of Emmanuel Adebayor’s impending departure came over the newswires, a number of armchair managers signed up to follow Arsenal FC for the coming season, dispelling rumors they might be looking at a return to supporting Liverpool or Manchester United.

This vociferous section of Arsenal’s fanbase, the candid views of which can be heard in the Emirates, or read on the comments sections of news sites and blogs, say they are happy with the North London club and intend to fulfill their new commitment.

BR Ltd understands that the armchair managers have demanded substantial recompense, and their new agreement takes place amidst dark whispers that failure for Arsenal to secure silverware in 2008-09 will see them look for new clubs next summer.

When asked how close he was to walking away during this transfer window, one anonymous armchair manager was cautiously diplomatic, “F*ck off, you pr*ck. I’ve been a gooner for thirty years.”

On the subject of his continued support, however, the aspiring technician was more reticent, “It’s all about the club matching my ambition. At the end of the day, I cough up a lot of money, and that means I deserve some success.”

He went on, “Who knows what the future holds. If it looks like I’m won’t be able to wag my d*ck at the pub, then I may have to look at my options.”

  300. Just a matter of time Ole before the Denilson, Song bashing commences.

  301. Ian Wright – Corruptio optimi pessima.

Corruption of the best, is the worst.

  302. Sorry that should be “continues”.

  303. Thanks for the link Ole – he’s always interesting and knows how to handle the media well.

  304. Passenal, I was just thinking the same thing, he knows how to give answers that dont leave room for clowns to jump on.

I remember stories about him saying we needed more players, here he says he has faith in the squad. Good man!

  305. Its great to hear he’ll play in any position that will help arsenal.. and ofcourse he knows that Arsene is the God particle of all things Arsenal..

  306. “I like to play in any position that suit Arsenal”
    “Wenger is very strong coach”

    What brilliant comments from AA.

  307. Arshavin is one of the older heads in the squad. So it shows.

I like how when asked if he wanted more money he smiled knowlingly at the interviewer like ….come on, you and I know you fookers make stuff up, you expect me to take that as a serious question?

  308. Nice to see a good interview with an Arsenal player. The interviewer could not trap the little Russian though, AA was to diplomatic for that.

  309. Jimbo/James did you also use the name “James Le Beak”? He also wanted Wenger out and then changed his story when it suited him”

Not that I am saying you are “James Le Beak” but it just goes to show how people’s opinions can change.

Frank; are you selling Neena’s shi… manure on your stall? (should that be stool in the circumstances). Us older Gooners like to do a bit of gardening.

  310. [...] Good Grief, Is He Still Here? First of all, every thought should go to John Hartson and his family following the neurosurgery he underwent yesterday [...] [...]

  311. Brilliant Arsh interview, thank you for the link. He is such a likeable player, intelligent and thoughtful, and I am immensely proud to have him at Arsenal, not just as a player but because he seems to be a genuinely good person. His comments on Adebayor (“excellent striker”) and Fabregas (“he is fantastic”) are great to hear too.

I have also noticed tonight that he looks uncannily like a young Arsene Wenger! Watch the Sky Sports interview and you will surely see what I mean – the nose and the mouth are identical. I wonder how much Arsene sees Andrey as the player he would have wanted to be!

I also couldn’t help but laugh out loud at Arsh’s comments on training. I wonder how the tabloids will dress that up…

  312. I don’t know if you guys have heard, but Sport, Barca’s home paper, has announced a trade of Eto’o for Ibrahimovich. I know it’s not Arsenal, but that is some pretty hefty talent moving around. Eto’os wages would have been ridiculous, but I would have loved to see him at Arsenal. Amazing player.

  313. Arshavin has set my day up perfectly.

The first interview I have seen from an Arsenal player for sometime, where the player truly comes accross as a fully evolved grown-up.

    “Arsene knows everything”

    Abso….bloody….lutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And thanks for reminding the fans and your colleagues, that he makes the signings and does not requre, every Tom, Dick and Harry’s advice.

I’ll raise a glass to Vermaellen having a similar grown-up attitude and maybe then, we can return to the class of Keown, Adams, Paddy…when senior players, only ever stopped in front of a camera to remind us the Boss knows what he is doing.

  314. Thanks for the link Ole. I watched, partly to hear the man talk and partly to see a scumbag journo at work. It’s clear he had some trip up questions especially designed for the headline writers. Mr Arshavin sidestepped them all and left the moron asking the questions looking like a Liverpool defender. Great stuff. Oh and now I know how to pronounce St Petersburg too.

  315. Sorry, left the office last night to go on the ‘hit and miss’ so didn’t see the post from Ole. In response to your question, if we had the Ade of two seasons ago I would have not problem at all, as I have already said. I just can’t understand why so many people are willing to defend a guy who has put himself on the market for two consecutive off-seasons. It was bad enough when Vieira was courted every summer by Juve, but Ade seems to be on offer to everybody.
I would have problems if he stays now as he would be a huge disrupting influence in the dressing room. I think its inevitable that he goes, come on guys move on.
I do not have a downer on our prospects in the coming season, I have been a season ticket holder for 20 years, I love the club and I don’t think we are more than a couple of players away from being the finished article. A holding midfielder and a replacement striker for Ade when he goes.
I am really looking forward to the match at Barnet tomorrow. The “kids” have had another season under their belts so lets see how they look now.

  316. Well if you’ve been a season ticket holder for 20years I will of course defer to your opinion.

Does Arsenal run in your family?

  317. I too enjoyed the interview with Andrei. His masculine attitude set my skin a-tingling. It was great to see him condescend to praise Adebayor and Fabregas, even though he must be conscious of being a far superior player.

  318. Its important to be humble, PZ.

Its why i never talk about Arsenal going back 12 generations in my family.

Also the lack of it being true has a bearing on that, although i recognise that doesn’t stop others.

  319. He’s learnt English amazingly well, it shows what a hard worker he is because languages are tough

  320. I propose he be called Andrei Chrysostom (golden-mouthed), from now on, in recognition of his eloquence.

  321. Amazing considering that only French is spoken in the dressing room…

  322. Some aim for 1st! I like to get one of the last comments in, and then it just floats around in the internet wilderness, unanswered and un-commented upon. The modern equivalent to “yesterday’s chip-wrapper”. Anyway, I would just like to wish John Hartson a full recovery…..in response to YW’s (accidental) linkage to “Good Grief…Is he still here?” Get well soon, JH.

  323. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/fabregas-i-can-t-wait-to-see-rosicky-return

  324. Queen of Sub, I saw him the other day wearing a beret with AA on the front

  325. He’s moonlighting in car repair? He really is quite the talent!

  326. Queen of Sub, Brilliant

  327. Yes, brilliant, QoS; but not as brilliant as The Andrei.

  328. In a country where most of the cars are either Ladas or Trabants, I imagine everyone has plenty of experience of auto-repair.

  329. Arshavin says he’s never played left wing. I’m surprised. I’m pretty sure he played there in some UEFA Cup games for Zenit last year.

  330. Maybe he means left wing in a 4-4-2 with the responsibility to track the opposing full back and cover for his….

  331. Ole, I think he can normally roam wherever he wants, he’s a number 10

  332. It is just impossible not to like Arshavin, the guy is a class act.

I am also loving Cesc’s comments about Rosicky this morning.

The article also seems to blow away The Mail’s comments about Thomas not being back until October, it looks like he is fit and ready to go.

An Arshavin, Cesc, Rosicky midfield is something i cannot wait to see.

  333. I wonder is we would have the right balance if we played all 4 of Arshavin, Cesc, Nasri and Rosicky in midfield?

Would we be strong enough defensively, and who would be best to play alongside Cesc – Nasri or Rosicky?

  334. Just making the point that I am a supporter of the club and am not looking to put the club down. I want success for Arsenal as we all do. I am the first generation of gooners in my family as my father is a Scotsman and a Celtic fan through and through. My eldest son is a gooner and my six-month old will be as well.
Lets talk about the positives in the club for the coming season.

  335. He’s given the right to roam at Arsenal too…

    Which brings up another issue.

I’ve been thinking of formations and I’m really falling in love with 4-2-3-1.

In my 4-2-3-1, the “3″ all get free roles. They however have to defend from the front, and track opposition midfield runners when we lose the ball. Especially the opposition “in-between-the-lines” players.

I wish I could draw a graphic to illustrate what I mean.

The “2″ in midfield will sit deep and remain deep and be very disciplined about sitting deep. They will play on the ball when the opposition have 8,9,10 men behind the ball. And they will orchestrate play, or simply keep the ball circulating to the front 4, and to the full backs who will almost play like midfielders.

Sounds perfect in my head :) :P
