Ramsey, Walcott Pump It Up and Did The Board Know Your Rights?

Sports Psychologists have been working overtime on the Arsenal squad or so it would seem. There is a bit of a Jackie Wilson moment going on, starting with RvP, followed by Rosicky and now Theo and Aaron Ramsey are adding a touch of the Monty Python’s. Walcott has apparently got the ball rolling in the July edition of the official club magazine:

It was a good learning curve for us all but next year it is all about the trophies. Hopefully we have had the years of experience now and can bring something back for the fans.

Aaron Ramsey more or less echoed his thoughts:

I think we lost more games than we would have liked to against teams which were lower down. That’s the main lesson we have learned from last season. It is frustrating to lose against teams further down the table when you have beaten the big sides. But I think we’ve got a good enough squad now to really kick on this season and get ourselves in the mix for the title.

One thing that the players have in abundance is a positive word for the media, an area no doubt worked upon during media training sessions. It is by extension good for supporters as it extends a feeling of belief, unless of course you are not predisposed to believe them. That there is humility in the words is, for want of better phrase, a positive aspect. The hunger to win is there to be seen without the misplaced arrogance that can sometimes be insinuated.

It is, of course, difficult when the interviews are with official outlets to misquote since the real words can easily be found. Yet there can be too much of a good thing. At the moment, the optimism surrounding the new season is understandable but last season there were times after a poor defeat when the positive ’spin’ put on matters was, I think, misplaced.

A balance has to be struck between the positive and the realistic. The latter half of the season veered towards the latter, although the public belief that the title could still be won even when though it was only a mathematical possibility was too optimistic. However, that was then, this is now. Better I guess to hear from the players than they become possessors of a shyness that is criminally vulgar.

The ruminations over the rejection of that Rights Issue continued yesterday, Stan Kroenke’s purchase of more shares bringing more speculation as the reasons for the Board rejecting Alisher Usmanov’s proposal. In The Sun, Steven Howard speculated that Danny F would ‘do a long-expected runner’ when Manchester City replace Arsenal in the top four at the end of the coming campaign. Which presupposes that City have brought good enough players to make up the double figure gap in points before even comparing the two squads. Let’s not even go down the route of managerial competency.

The Guardian’s David Conn makes several valid points regarding the benefits that the money would have had for the club’s finances without actually knowing the detail of Usmanov’s plans. The devil such things is always in the detail which Conn acknowledges in the final two paragraphs. A long way down the article to learn:

[The Board] may well have valid reasons for rejecting that offer. The board may believe the rights issue is a stalking horse for Usmanov to gain more control – which he denies – and they may feel they have good reasons for being suspicious of Usmanov

Conn’s request that the Board ’spell those reasons out’ is not unreasonable but stands little chance of ever happening.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. I think that Gazidis made a pretty good job of explaining the Board’s decision YW.

I haven’t read a journalist’s take on this story that hasn’t left me fuming.

  2. Excellent stuff as usual Yogi,

With Cit-eh being bigged up by the media & Man U, Chelsea & Pool being the title `contenders` we are going to slip under the radar this season, as we did a couple of years ago.

None of the pundits fancy us which is great.

    Bring it on

  3. There was guest-post at Le Grove by a Polish Arsenalist on July 5 titled Wengerball A Style Identical to None which is an interesting read.

Hearty congratulations to Le Grove for carrying a piece that is not in their normal style, to assess the motivation and strategy of Wenger.

Well how about that? One swallow does not make a spring, but at least it’s a swallow. One or two of the comments in response are also interesting.

  4. Or was that supposed to be a robin? Here spring is announced by weavers, the male furiously building 7 or 10 or 15 nests, and the female inspects them and chooses one, maybe, or simply says ‘rubbish’, start again; and he gets going.

  5. Consolbob, I agree with you on Gazidis.
David Conn is the only journalist who has put together an argument that’s anything like rational about the rights issue.

  6. not sure, i just reckon the players are keen and fired up. for sure the Wenger machine is well oiled, but its well more oiled than the other boring rubbish out there!

lets go Gooners, this is our league title!

  7. It’s looking likely to me that Matuidi will be joining us.

  8. David Conn is essentially arguing that Arsenal should follow the sugardaddy model. These “rich men” put money into the club.

The question is what do they gain in return? Would Usmanov just write us a cheque of £37.5M, Kroenke a cheque of £50M and Fiszman a cheque of £22.5M?

  9. As i read the book according to the gospel of full support for the Arsenal, i had a revelation thus;

“come all ye that doubt and walk in the shadows of doomism, fear not for another trophyless season as the time for the Arsenal to manifest has come”

  10. The only virtue of a rights issue is if the club can buy it’s debt at a discounted rate, the club refinanced before the credit crisis really bit, even so if you can buy your debt at 60p in the £ it makes alot of sense. The interest savings can increase the football budget. The duff commercial deals could also be bought out of but probably finding alternative sponsers would probably be difficult at the current time.

The sad fact is that the ownership model means Fiszman has made alot of money from the increase in the value of the club (which he helped create by building the stadium) unfortunately that hasn’t been pumped back into the club or used to reduce the clubs debt. Also the longer he waits I believe he will avoid CGT on the increased value of his stake. although he is also a tax exile.

  11. Shareholders only make money if they sell their shares, as David Dein did. Until then they are effectively losing money by having money tied up in the club with no returns.

  12. Isn’t con French for ****?

  13. “…despite being only 173cm/5ft 8 in. tall, he is a good header of the ball, good jumper and often scores goals with his head…”
SOURCE: Wikipedia on Ivan Cordoba of Inter

My take is that the argument about our defensive players not tall enough should be discounted. Its lies in being purposeful not being tall.

  14. Good post as usual YW. Really like the positivity surrounding the club currently.

  15. At only 5′9″, some people might consider Blaise a mite too weedy.

  16. The problem is nobody knows the TRUE intentions of Usmanov. Why did he bring up the right issue in the first place? Is He the one using the media machinery to boost its cause because the media seems to be his mouth piece than himself and the Red and White Holdings.

  17. Isn’t Makelele the template for the DM and he’s hardly a giant?

  18. vivb,

The capital gains from the value of Fiszman’s shares did not come from the club’s resources, so it is completely unfounded to say it has not “been pumped back into the club”. The shares belong to Fiszman and not the club.

£150M will not wipe out the club’s debt. We’d still have debt. The annual debt payments are £20-25M. If we reaised £150M, we’d less than halve our debts. So let’s say the yearly debt payments halved as well. We’d reduce our debt payments by £10M a year.

As Gazidis points out, it won’t be a radical or substantial change to the club’s cash flow.

If the worry is the flats, then that has to be looked at closely. The question is, will they be able to refinance the £133M at cheap rates. In this recession there’s reason to think it might be harder. Nevertheless, even if we refinanced at 1-2% higher, it would not affect the club’s cashflow much.

So technically, Gazidis seems on sound footing though he’s being ridiculued for what he’s said.

    The argument against Gazidis, is that surely every club can do with more money. Perhaps Gazidis should have pointed out that;

    1. A share issue is not cost free.
    2. A share issue is very likely to change the structure of the club’s shareholding especially shafting the small shareholders.
3.Usmanov wasn’t about to write us a cheque for £150M. Other shareholders had to raise the funds. It’s all well and good to say Fiszman made money from selling his shares but it would be ridiculously presumptious to think that means he could even invest the windfall. If other shareholders didn’t have money, we were not about to get an extra £150M

  19. So i take it everyone reads Le grove on a regular basis then even though it’s anti-Arsenal.

Surely we should bid for Richards now,we must be able to get an even cheaper price now he has the pig flu.

  20. Vivb,
Is Arsenal debt trading at a 40% discount to par?

    ZimPaul,
Beware wolves in sheeps clothing. The morons at Le Grove may well be catching on to the growing understanding of the agendas behind the media’s anti-Arsenal fixation. Only time will tell whether the penny has truly dropped and they’re ready to join the grown ups or whether they’ll revert to type as soon as the next piece of anti-Arsenal propaganda emerges in their favourite lowlife rags….

  21. I’m not concerned about height in midfield, but AW said he would bring in experienced players. So far he has brought in a 22 yo defender and now we are talking about a 22 yo midfielder!

  22. Although, we have walked through the valley of seasons past, i shall not be shaken for i see the mountain of a successful season ahead us.

  23. The one thing I can’t stand about people on ACLF is their Le Grove obssession. It drives me crazy. To me Le Grove couldn’t be more irrelevant in the world of Arsenal.

  24. Why are my posts not appearing?

  25. No, Duke, I never read Le Grove, and I never read the football pages of the newspapers. My mind is somewhat decayed, but I am not yet so senile that I take my opinions from journalists.

  26. Is a “good learning curve” a shallow or a steep one?

  27. I am sick of hearing the Main board directors saying lets run it like a business. Its a business for them, and for them to make a nice financial return.
It should be run like a club and for the supporters.

Let investors in, buy big players and lets start winning things again.

  28. An investor is someone who puts money in with te aim of taking more out in the medium or long term.
    That is what Usmanov is.
Fans don’t actually want investors, they just want benefactors.
But benefactors can walk away just as easily as they can walk in, leaving the club in ruins!

  29. We need to “hit the ground running this season”.

  30. How is a club run, Divesy?

  31. “Put a marker down”, if you like.

  32. the earlier we go for a defensive mid-fielder the better. we also need a fender for the players in the mould of david dein to block scavenging clubs from porching. however i believe in the present squard as they are now matured.

  33. Hey Pol,

Why do you think it is likely that Matuidi will be joining us?

    Apart from the media speculation?

  34. “Isn’t Makelele the template for the DM and he’s hardly a giant?”

Mite too weedy was supposed to sound like Matuidi. That is all. I’m not fond of hulking players, which is one reason I was never enthusiastic about Felipe Melo.

  35. Might be missing a trick here, maybe someone can help me out?

Around £200M has been collectively shelled out by the Yank & Uzbec as they squirrel away almost 60% of our total share value in 2years. Not 1 single penny of that money has found it’s way back onto the pitch, not a bloody penny of it.

In this time both Dean & Fizsman have been the major benefactors, yet neither has tossed in a single penny of their collective windfalls to the team re-building fund. These are the 2 men whom we are led to believe have Arsenal’s interests at heart?

Over the past few years we have had to make do whilst others continue to strengthen and inevitably catch/overtake us. Liverpool spent their way to 2nd, Benitez didn’t just suddenly get his shit together. Over the next couple of years Man City will attract enough mercenaries to at least challenge for trophy’s, like it or not the Arabs are in it to win, not just have a halfhearted go.

We have 2 billionaires, at least 3 multi millionaires and a couple of other very bloody wealthies, all milling around earning nicely out of our club, sorry, their club I should probably say.

Arsenal FC has become the most profitable ‘Buy-To-Let’ property this country has ever known. Rent is always more than covered, no shortage of paying clients and with minimal maintenance required, a landlord/investor’s dream.

I’m afraid we are being well and truely had over, both by the board & major shareholders. Not a single one of them cares for the actual club ahead of their own financial standing. Of course it would be foolish to expect otherwise but they could at least show some token effort, perhaps a wee whip round of sorts.

I’d say Wenger cares, but he’s being left to tread water in an ever increasingly strong tide, sooner or later he’ll get a cramp and then we’ll really be shafted.

This week Uzmanov made a token business proposal. Ok, so he probably did have his own agenda, but at least the team could have finally benefited from all this money flying around the club. Maybe a legitimate & viable alternative could be put together by the combined board and benefactors.

But then maybe not eh, why bother, someone’s bound to come along shortly to buy the whole thing anyway, so why not just accumulate more shares and sit on them till that obscenly rich and determined Arab arrives with his family’s pot of gold.

Both Kronke & Uzmanov want to maximise their investment portfolio with our shares, neither want’s or cares a jot for the club, they just want as many shares as they can without hitting that magic 30%. By creating more shares they could’ve both held more shares without actually getting any nearer to tipping that balance. A rehashed formula could work out for everyone I’d have thought, including dare I say it, THE TEAM.

  36. Apart from the media speculation? I don’t know about that. Without the speculation, I’d never have heard of him. According to reports, though:

    1) He has supposedly been in London to negotiate with Arsenal.
    2) He has said he wants to leave St. Etienne.
    3) He has said he admires Arsenal’s style of football.
    4) He is not a big name, and has not been prominent in any recent tournaments, which are the usual reasons for false speculation.

  37. Pol, Ole, Zim, ClockEndGooner et al. – Morning from an overcast Caribbean. It would not only be naive but false to say many of us don’t read L/G or any other blog, at least occassionally. How else could we comment on their writings. The fact is the bloggers have consciously made a decision where they stand in the spectrum of Arsenal “supporters.” In my opinion it is the low-end, others may disagree. Similarly YW has chosen to the high road. Over time it becomes evident in the type of supporter who is comfortable affiliating themselves to the blog in the “comments” section. For example – I remember when ACLF used to attract no more than 40-50 posters a day but over the past year when the club struggled and the debate raged for the hearts and minds of supporters (pro-Wenger vs anti-Wenger) the number of hardcore posters at ACLF has at least tripled. I see the same phenomenon in the key blogs.
Bottomline: Sure LG may post the occasional “fair and balanced” piece (it is the same trick used by the traditional media) but when push comes to shove they will resort to type.

  38. I might also add that I think Wenger is interested in buying a central midfielder. I accept that he did enquire about Felipe Melo. He would perhaps have been willing to pick him up for £5 million, but Fiorentina’s valuation of over £20 million made him laugh so much that he almost had to go into hospital.

Matuidi attended the Clairefontaine academy. Players who have been there often seem to attract interest from Wenger, and I assume that Wenger has contacts who inform him about promising talent.

  39. Jerry T
Of course the money Usmanov and Kroenke have spent has gone to the people they bought the shares from, not to the club. Usmanov got most of his shares from DD and then went on an agressive campaign buying shares from small shareholders.
There has been some share transfers between board members, notable Fizmann to Kronke, and so DF will have made some money from this.
We don’t know why this occured, it may was during the early stages of the credit crunch, maybe DF needed the money to prop up other investments!
The idea that the owners are making large amounts of money out of the club doesn’t really hold water. The club pays no dividends, the only benefit investors get is the increase in value of the shares, and instead of cashing in, SK and AU are buying more shares at the current high price.

  40. Funny this Jerry T reminds me of a series of pro Usmanov pieces that were recently posted on another blog. Long, windy and pseudo populist. Railing against the current Board.
Wanting the millionaire-billionaire shareholders to act like sugar daddies (Usmanov perhaps)
Saluting the big spenders like Benitez (whoo-hoo).
A little dig at Kroenke and Usmanov at the end to seem even-handed.
    H’mmmm!

  41. Jerry T,

They haven’t “squirelled away” “our share value”. The share value was always theirs. They bought shares in, and put money into the club, long ago when there was never any hope that the club could actually make money. As it turns out, the club did make money, and the value of their shares increased. How could you begrudge them that?

Contrary to all the nonsense you’ve written in your last comment, these people put their own money back into Arsenal every single year! How? Well, when a club or company makes a profit, the profits belong to the shareholders. This money would usually be given to the shareholders as dividends, returns on their investment.

Our shareholders reinvest the profits in the club every single year. When this happens they are essentially putting their money (THEIR VERY OWN MONEY) back into the club.

Now, if other clubs are spending more money than us, it is because they are spending money they don’t have and wracking up debt to do so.

Are you really here arguing that we should just spend, and take on more debt? You’d argue that you only want the rich shareholders to invest more money into the club.

But the club is run on a self-sustaining model, with significant assistance by shareholders and the board who have the mentality of a trust.

Usmanov was not about to put £150M into the club. He was asking other shareholders to put in their own money.

Some Arsenal fans are as ignorant as Spuds or Newcastle fans apparently.

  42. I was just wondering if you had a’club source’.

He certainly ticks all the boxes as a potential Arsenal signing, and if he turns out to be of similiar quality to Sagna, of which this potential transfer emulates, i will be more than happy.

Grimandi seems to be doing a tidy job for us scouting over there, and certainly seems to have the trust of AW.

  43. Ole: “How is a club run, Divesy?”

A valid question. I’m not sure that Divesy knows what he’s talking about. A private club, a football club, or what?

No matter what kind of club, the first thing is to have a financial budget. Which means income, expenses, etc.

  44. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2009/20090711_124219_a-song-interesse-m-city.html

according to l`equipe citeh are intersted in alexander song, arsene wenger isnt willing to sell.

  45. Sorry, Matt, I don’t have any club sources.

I have lunch with Wenger every month or so; but although we talk in detail about the transfers he is planning, I have to promise not to give anything away.

  46. Hi Yogi,

I was locked up in moderation last night, didn’t get to see my kids, have a shower, eat or anything and to top it off, I am innocent!

Do you know the reason for this mistaken identity?

  47. Pz,

I also agree that Melo was some £15M overpriced. I am still watching to see if Juve will truly sign him. In my estimation though, he’s a better player than Matuidi.

Like PaulN or someone I really think an experienced and mature midfielder is what we need. By exprience I mean big-game experience. Not 500 games in the Tonga Premier League.

  48. Afternoon all,

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Matuidi rumour had some truth mixed in with speculation. That would be much closer to a Wenger type of signing than Melo who was never in a million years going to come for that price.

  49. Jerry T,
I’m afraid you are missing a trick here. That trick is that the Uzbek has already stated that his initial position is to ask for a dividend to be paid out. Thus before he has put a single penny into the club, he is already looking for a return. The current board has not taken a dividend for 30 odd years. Which side would appear to be looking at the long term stability of the club, and which at a vehicle for producing large cash returns?
Further you correctly state that others have in the last few years spent big and have either overtaken (Chelsea, Liverpool), or may be in the process of catching us up (Man City, Villa?). The question you don’t ask is where do they go into the future? Man United have a viable long term business model including their debt. This is due to a 20 year growth plan put in place by the Edwardes and continued by subsequent guardians of the club including the current ones. Neither Liverpool nor Chelsea have viable business models. Chelsea lose £100m a season and continue to spend more on salaries than their entire annual revenues each year. Liverpool have spent big and are now stymied by the fact that they cannot fund the new stadium in the way Arsenal did, in part due to their high cost base and equally due to the recesion and the fact that property in Liverpool has little commercial or developmental value, limiting the value of the current ground. Man City also have no business model other than the Arabs funding them. There is absolutely nothing we can do about that other than rely on their ante diluvian manager screwing them up which on past experience is not unlikely. The Villa owner has done nothing to show that he will back O’Neill to get them up into 4th place. Tottenham continue to be a laughing stock on and off the pitch.
Personally I am quite satisfied that our current guardians are ensuring that we continue to have a future and are not likely to follow Leeds, Newcastle, Forest et al into lower league obscurity. The prodigal spending of money in the present is no guarantee of future success if it is built on nothing more than a hope of jam tomorrow. Wenger has built an entire edifice based around quality football from first team down to 9 year olds. He has had to cut his cloth due to a combination of financial necessity and the current recession yet he has still delivered entertaining football (for the most part) and Champions League qualification. We can acknowledge financial and business prudence which dictates that you can’t continue to spend in excess of what you earn for an indefinite period or you can chance your arm in the financial casino. I know where my money lies. How about you?

  50. As i meditated on the Emirates’ Museum of Trophies and Arts, i remembered the battle of Paris in 2006 when Igwe missed the target severat times. The battle of Cardiff in 2007 when they stole our arms, the battle of St. Andrews in 2008, where the laid unlawful seige on our best armour bearer. The battle of the Emirates and Wembley in 2009, when our arms weren’t enough. And The voice declared, keep the faith for victory is near and in sight

  51. GFN,

Would “Igwe” be Thierry? Is that what Thierry means in Nigerian?

  52. Pass on my regards next time you do lunch with AW Pol.

Ole – have you seen Melo and Matuidi play much?

Not being shitty, it’s just that i haven’t, and was interested to know what they were like.

Melo has signed for Juve anyway, it says so on the Fiorentina website.

  53. Matt,

Ok, you got me. Not seen Matuidi play much. I just asked a friend who’s seen both players often.

I’ve seen Melo in like 6-8 matches. He’s a good player but he’s no Michael Essien.

  54. Out of the lush and best pitch of the EPL shall flow fountains of trophies. For they that learn to wait shall have their patience rewarded with trophies. Alas, the voice declared it is in the pitch not boardroom.

  55. Wasn’t trying to catch you out – just interested to know what they were like.

I haven’t seen either play personally, but going by what Grimandi has recommended so far – Sagna, i would be more than happy with Matuidi.

  56. @Ole Gunner

Yes, thats what he is/was called. Igwe of Highbury/Emirates. Its means Chief or King

  57. Matt,

I like Felipe Melo but don’t think he’s what we need. Matuidi, some actually call the new Makelele but I was told Melo is the more dynamic player who’d fit better into the Arsenal style of play.

I don’t think there’s any doubt about any the quality of Grimandi’s recruits. It’s more a matter of; is he the right player, or are there better choices.

You say Fiorentina has announced selling Melo? I hear he hasn’t actually signed since he’s still on vacation.

  58. King Henry :D Sounds just about right….

  59. In a moment of silence i asked the Voice why do the media always slate the Arsenal. And He replied, failure is an orphan while success is a friend to all. How can it be changed? i asked, get good success. Alas, its on the way.

  60. Mean

No idea what was going on with the initial post but the ones that followed were probably caught because the first one was awaiting moderation.

I sorted through them so there weren’t a shed load of repeats!

    YW

  61. If it were not for the simple fact that there is an unusually interesting article, I would not have mentioned it. You guys should know me a bit better! I am no apologist for doom-mongering.

  62. Missed that ZP. No doomer you.

  63. I can see the sun on the horizon and, the shadows would soon disappear.
I can see the mountains from a distance and, the valley would give way.
The pathway is set for a triumph.

  64. have the feeling arsenal will do well next season, bit too quiet the last couple of season – calm before the storm

  65. I cant see no sun, its too bloody cloudy and it looks like it might rain.

  66. @ZimPaul

We all know you. Pls don’t be annoyed. Cool temper

  67. Even as President Obama speaks live in Accra, Ghana. I want to say Yes we can. Trophy to the Emirates.

  68. Umm…..Does some troll…sorry….misguided lad…..need a hug?

  69. It bloody is raining here Duke, unfortunately not in Cardiff. Bloody English bowlers are crap.

  70. When will this misery end? When will they come out to play?!?!

    Bob,

    How are you?

  71. Them bloody aussies! it doesnt matter who they put out they still look more classy then us. I hate the 5 day teast cricket now , what a load of boolocks that after 5 days it could still be drawn! they should at least have to finish each innings.

Anyone give a shit about the golf? nah me neither.

  72. test

  73. bollocks

  74. Yogi, can you get one of them spelling checks please.

  75. You’re starting to hate all other sports, duke. You’re suffering from what G4E is suffering, arsenalmyt____ something.

  76. Golf…A good way to spoil a nice walk.

  77. The beauty of a gift is the triumph of the process over the product. The Arsenal possesses gifted players that are still in the process of being completely transformed into a finished product. The process is near completion and we would see the beauty of this gifted players blossom into trophies this season. Alas, the voice declared, the reward is about to cross the bridge. An ethereal atmosphere is coming to the Emirates this season

  78. JerryT – If you bought some shares in Tesco’s would you send the company a cheque (Out of the goodness of your heart) to help them build a new store?

It amazes me the number of people who have no idea of how companies run or the concept of owning shares in a company.

  79. We are going to get more and more stories along the lines of adopting the sugar daddy approach, purely because we are finally starting to see the wheels come off ManU’s and Liverpool’s ownership model. The press would like nothing better than to see Arsenal saddled with another £600 million debt. Imagine the stories we would hear about unsustainable debt then.

  80. As a songwriter declared, who can say where the road goes as they the day flows only time, …who knows, only time. That time has come.

  81. Oh the cricket is dire!

  82. As for Man City overtaking us! They will either finish just outside of the UEFA cup places (or whatever it is called now) and Hughes will get the bullet, they might scrap into the UEFA cup and Hughes will get the bullet or Hughes will get the bullet around Christmas, new manager and another big spend in Jan.

  83. ESPN are showing Arsenal vs the Spud’s from the 04/05 season. Finally I’ve got a fix!

  84. 4 tons.

  85. “Better I guess to hear from the players than they become possessors of a shyness that is criminally vulgar.”

What a beautifully worked Smiths reference. Top class.

  86. I gotta feeling them Aussie’s are gunner skittle us.

  87. I despise that fat Uzbek gangster with a passion…. Even though I was vehemently opposed to Kroenke taking over the coub (still am) at least he is on board, with the, erm Boaod and they are all on the same team.

This twat is not, is in it for his own ends, what they are, apart from wanting the club for himself, for whatever reason, is beyond me… He could make more money doing other things, unless the club would be a means to an end..?

    Money laundering? who knows?

He is a slime ball and the PR machine is steadily spewing out more and more propoganda, SSN had some oily agent on earlier, there are pieces appearing in the Daily mail and others, we need to stand firm, not bite even with the so-called promise of free money for Wenger….

    Bollocks its free!

Usmanov… You are NOT WANTED! Fuck off!

  88. A Clubs PI man worth his salt will coach players how to handle the media. Trust me on this. The media will ask the same question fifty different ways to trap a player or a coach. Bobby Gee
    I are one. Thanks

  89. Just been watching the last 25 mins of Arsenal v Everton from last season. We looked lethal every time we had the ball. Theo sped through 3 Everton defenders, fast, like a pinball missing all the zingers, like a fast 1-2-3 waltz, like a deadly weapon, but ran out of space and ideas having left them leaden. RvP was causing panic on the right (he seemed to have switched with Theo for a spell). Ade had sweet feet, they lunged and prodded and he twisted and back-healed and feigned and easily beat 2 defenders trying to get real friendly like. How we didn’t win 5-1, instead of 2-1 the commentators couldn’t explain.

  90. Why have we got such rubbish teams in the emirates cup this year? I look forward to it normally but this year seems so bland

  91. Spike – Totally agree with you.

  92. Just had a thought. No Arsenal manager has ever won back to back titles. If we can win the league this and the following season we would have achieved back to back titles on the 50th anniversary of the Spud’s last winning the league.

If we could do it it would be just a little extra something to beat them with.

  93. I don’t know what a PI man is, but I wouldn’t have our players spend even a minute learning to “handle the media.” The media is light entertainment. It only becomes dangerous when it is taken seriously. To attempt to learn to handle it is to take it seriously. If the media cannot report accurately, the correct response is to laugh, as one does at any other person who fails publicly and absurdly to perform his job.

  94. Spike,

Could’nt agree more. If Usmanov passes the ‘fit and proper’ persons test of the PL which he would need to if he wants to become a director/ owner it would be a crying shame.

It would mean that anyone, just any thug worldwide could own a club as seeped in tradition as us provided they have the money. Only in the PL is this possible.

  95. Poliziano – There are simple rules for dealing with the press.

Post match interview = be polite.

Newspaper hack = Fuck off you vulgar little cretin.

    Quite simple really.

  96. Alex – Does anyone know what is required to pass the fit & proper persons test?

  97. A large brown envelope stuffed with cash shouldn’t count!

  98. Pz,

    Too true about the hacks

  99. Ateeb. I’m fine, apart from the bloody cricket and the lack of Arsenal matches.

Have you hugged a troll yet today?

Nope, can’t stand that 20-20 rubbish Duke, only proper cricket that takes all summer and might be a draw. That is real sport.

  100. Consols @ 5:33 pm:
    You are the Best!
“Have you hugged a troll yet?”
    Heh, Heh, Heh!

  101. re YW on 10/7/09 at 7.51.p.m.

On first reading,I thought, surprise change in direction, good opening especially the words to Frank. But then again after reading the post through again,I realised it was pure sarcasm and nonsensical.

“the less mentally able in our society” sums it all up.You should be ashamed of yourself for using such a phrase,,and obviously you don’t understand the meaning,or more alarming, you do,as the rest of what you said is a complete .wind up in itself, and an insult to any decent person, let alone an Arsenal supporter

  102. Marc/Alex;

Glad you fell the same! Worries me, with the constant drip drip effect that we are somehow in crisis, when, for me, we are shit loads stronger than last season, will eventually lead some Gooners to start demanding this nasty piece of sh*t be installed as owner/sugar daddy.

Of course he would pass the PL pathetic “fit and proper person” test… If that dictator Shinawatra can, anyone can!

We have to be vigilante! Charles Bronson style!

  103. Consols – I had no inkling that a certain doomer posted minutes after to castigate this blog.
Should I give him a hug as well?

PS: I noticed that Untold Arsenal has decided to show no love to the trolls. Instant moderation is his solution especially when they quote word for word from other blogs. I’ve noticed this tactic from the pro-Usmanov faction, basically the same talking points are posted from blog-to-blog when they are seeking fan support for one of their shady schemes. Can’t say I blame Tony for binning them.

  104. Kelsey,
Since you find Yogi’s Warrior shameful, and since you disapprove of most of the people who contribute to his blog, a question occurs to me that begs for an answer: Why (oh why!) do you come here?

  105. Quit it Pz. He just needs a hug.

Ok whose going to do it? Not me. Not this one. Bob?

  106. .

  107. Ateeb I was about to hug him but had to listen to stories of his massive support for us since the 60’s, his longstanding friendship with the tea lady and other amusing anecdotes first. Am still waiting for him to stop talking.

  108. He doesn’t need a hug, he needs a nappy.

  109. I wasn’t being nasty to Kelsey. I’m just intrigued by a person who believes that the whole world ought to change to accomodate himself.

  110. Indeed Poli @ 7:17 pm.

Five weeks to the Prem; thats when all the fun begins.

  111. Round about this time of day, I find there’s nowt better than discarding the confining, restrictive clothing society deems we must wear, walk into the local Supermarket and ask the store assistant how much the plums are…

  112. Poliziano,

firstly I directed my post to YW,who I had the utmost respect for, until I read the post I referred to earlier.I found it offensive, and I have never said I disagree with most of the people on this blog, only one individual, who insulted me from day one.

Clan together if that is your wish,

    sticks and stones …..etc.

  113. Carrots and Sticks you’ve got Kelsey, unfairly on this blog, I admit.

You need a hug, and the anger will wash away. You will start seeing things the way of the “more mentally able in our society”. I just can’t seem someone willing to perform such an activity, without any sarcasm involved. The real deal, as you would like it.

Whose going to do it? Maybe Yogi can initiate this activity since he is the one who suggested we go down this road. Here’s a chance for everyone here, no one has hugged since morning, it would be historic, the first hug by an AKB to a misguided fella.

  114. Ergh, dont talk about carrots, woke up with a load of em on the floor… diced ones too…

  115. 6 days to pre-season…..

  116. A man wakes up in the morning with carrots – some diced – on the floor of his bedroom/skip. They were not there when he went to sleep, there are no cutting utensils on the room in the room, and the man hadn’t eaten carrots for weeks.

    What happened?

  117. - “on the room”

  118. Sorry, it sounded like one of those lateral thinking puzzles that I can never solve.

  119. Sounds more like a Neutral Milk Hotel song.

  120. Hey, King of Carrot Flowers! Man, that takes me back.

  121. I’m going to listen to it again right now.

  122. I’ve found my ACLF posting niche; I shall be the alt-rock nerd.

  123. Jeesus guys, some of you need to wind your paranoid necks in!

I take on board some of the comments made regarding my earlier rant, just as I appreciate the explanations given by others. When I said, ” I might be missing a trick here”, I meant it, I’m no financial expert and was merely ranting as I see it.

To those who gave a lucid and informed alternative, thanks for sharing it, I may not agree with all of it but much of it at least makes scense and I can go with to a point.

To the cocks who think I’m part of some elaborate Uzbek led mis-information conspiracy shite, what are you on? Put it in the ash tray or at least cut down before you completely smoke out your brains. For god’s sake!

I’m not a fan of Usmanov anymore than I support Kronke, neither has come clean as to his ultimate intentions, well not outside the boardroom anyway. Neither care for the Arsenal, doubt either of them had even heard of Highbury before it being coached into them. They care for their investment and that’s it, I’m not taking sides as I don’t much trust either of them to be honest.

Still stand by the idea of a collective whip round aswell, wouldn’t hurt anyone’s idividual fortune and could only help the squad, surely. No need to go into debt over it, between them ( 2 Billionaires + Fizsman + Dean + Lady B-S ) they could find a half decent transfer fee down the side of their sofas no worries. A string free combined gesture if you like.

  124. The cheques in the post….

    Hahahahahahahahahaaa!!!

  125. Have we all got selective amnesia? Whe the plan was announced to build a new stadium, it was made perfectly clear that things would be tight for several seasons…. Now the stadiums been built and we are feeling the pinch, suddenly we need billionaires to bail us out, coz we aint won shit for a bit?

Where wasd Usmanov when we were trying to raise the capital to build the Grove??? Where was he when it was a pipe dream? Where was he when we were supposedly out of our depth and had no cjance of seeing the project thru? Where was he, when the media was making out we were doomed?

Fucking nowehere, thats where, now its a reality, this chancer wants in…?

Fuck that, him and his ill gotten aint wanted, I’d rather we played the kids than have him bank roll us, just so he can try and worm his way into the club…

Just because the likes of City and the chavs are over reliant on sugar daddies, dont make it right…

We are on doing the right thing, if it means things are lean for a while and it relieves us of our glory hunting plastics, then so be it…

  126. I agree with Spike. Get rid of them plastics (especially the inflatable ones).

  127. Well said Spike – Usmanov would not be interested if he didn’t see the chance to make money. He is no benefactor, his agenda has always been about making money. Clearly there are some fans who are only too ready to be taken in by his false promises. He’s no Angel of mercy, more like the devil trying to get us to sell our souls for short-term glory.

  128. Passenal;

Its the promise of this £100 million transfer kitty, no strings attached that he and his PR machine in the media are trying to portray, which is so poisonous for me. Like its money for nuffin…. Just have to ask for it and its there… David Villa? No problem, here’s £40m… You want yaya? Yeahyeah… here’s another £20 mill…

Nope, not having it, its all bladerdash and poppycock…

    Sorry about the profanity there…

  129. “Balderdash and Poppycock”

    I like it Spike!

  130. Jerry T: Let me give you a hug as requested by YW and then remind you that you initiated the “shite” by attacking the existing Board and shareholders in a manner that is consistent with Usmanov’s counter-attack on the Directors after he was rebuffed.

Quote: “Not 1 single penny of that (shareholder) money has found it’s way back onto the pitch, not a bloody penny of it.”

Quote: “In this time both Dean & Fizsman have been the major benefactors, yet neither has tossed in a single penny of their collective windfalls to the team re-building fund.”

Quote: “Over the past few years we have had to make do whilst others continue to strengthen and inevitably catch/overtake us. Liverpool spent their way to 2nd,”

Quote: “I’m afraid we are being well and truely had over, both by the board & major shareholders. Not a single one of them cares for the actual club ahead of their own financial standing.”

My quotes are selective but they are meant to show that you started “flaming” using many of Usmanov’s talking points. [This flaming is a pattern with certain posters, many of whom are trolls seeking to incite the Arsenal fan-base against the current strategy of the club. They like to incite but can't take it in equal measure.] That is why you received the response you did from many ACLFers, which by our standards was very polite. Afterall Y.W. has suggested a hug may be more helpful.

  131. What is sooooo wrong in running the club like a, erm… business? You know? If we make £20 we can spend £15? What is so fucking alien about that?

Just because we have the sky hyped likes of City and the chavs spunking millions then that means we are dinosaurs, living in some sepia tinged past that time forgot??

Excuse me, but werent it the chavs who were saying they’d be self sufficient by now?

Arsenal are doing just that, as they HAVE to do in other countries and all we get is pure negative spin and propoganda, telling us we are fucked, how we cannot compete and wheeling out any ex-player with a past affinity to the club to tell us how Wenger is being undermined by the board, etc…Even though, they freely admit, they have no idea how the club is run…

I aint saying the likes of Peter Hill-Wood are beyond reproach, I mean, I do think they have shafted Wenger to a certain degree, by making out there is more money available than there actually is, but, it aint like they are a bunch of spivs, with no links to the club… When the hell have chairmen/board members been saintly individuals, that make Mother theresa look like Paris Hilton?

  132. Well said, Spike. You are on a roll!

  133. shotta; Ha! Thanks,

Can go on all night about this if needs be! For me, its the same tactic that Bush and the neo-cons used with the WMDs…. Constantly talking of crisis will engender a feeling that the club IS in crisis, even though that is plainly bullshit!

  134. If Usmanov is so confident about his “method and business model” why doesn’t he sell his shares in Arsenal and buy the Spud’s? He could then build them a new stadium and his £100 million transfer kitty (is that per year or a one off?) would propel them into the CL at our expense. He would then be in a position to show to all of the small minded Arsenal fans (me included) just how wrong we were. While the Spud’s would go on to rule the world Arsenal would drift into mid table mediocrity.

Of course the above wouldn’t work if your only motive was to take money OUT of the most sustainable and profitable club in the PL.

  135. Spike – You’ve got a good point there. Not only did Blair and Bush constantly feed the “fear” about WMDs but they manufactured evidence to support their claim. Not dissimilar to what is happening with the anti Arsenal stories at the moment. It makes you wonder whether there is a hidden agenda, beyond the basic hatred of Arsenal.

  136. And as if by magic…. another bullshit article appears;

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/401918/Alisher-Usmanov-Arsenal-threat-Gunners-shareholder-to-hit-back.html?postingId=403236

  137. Marc;

That method works! Keep on putting out stories of impending doom and people and people will believe it….

  138. Anybody who believes anything written in the NotW or SUN is short of a few brain cells. Both papers are owned by the Murdoch corp as is Sky. And we all know how good Sky are in reporting the truth.

  139. Spike; The link is funny (if a bit out of date)

  140. Typical! My comment aint been published by the NotW! You think it was the fact I called em, corporate lackeys and hacks who have sold their souls to the devil…?

  141. [...] Ramsey, Walcott Pump It Up and Did The Board Know Your Rights? Sports Psychologists have been working overtime on the Arsenal squad or so it would seem. There is a bit of a Jackie [...] [...]

  142. Spike; They are still running their fingers along the words, letter by letter, to read comment.

  143. Stick a “the” anywhere that it fits.

  144. I’d love to know what the actual transfer budget available to Wenger is

then we might be able to make a better judement on whetehr Usmanov is right

    anyone have any idea ?

    http://www.footballnewshq.com/

  145. Scott; Usmanov is a fat ugly crook and he can f*ck off. He is also a Man U fan and a friend of the other russian crook at che$li.

  146. It is a bizarre fallacy, created by the media, that Arsenal has a ‘transfer budget’ or ‘kitty’ in terms of business strategy. It’s just that the tabloid media knows there’s mileage in getting the punters to play ‘football monopoly’ by imagining they receive money and buy players, ‘like real managers’ and so compare their ‘decisions’.

Gazidis has been straight forward explaining that there is an understanding with the directors that he and the manager can approach them for funds to purchase, based on a player concerned. The amounts, in one sense, have no ceiling. They are justified by player attributes, in the context of team needs and strategy, and other factors which has been agreed. It is not so much consensus, but rather strict accountability.

It is an advanced business model, flexible, responsive to circumstances or opportunities, rather than ‘prescriptive’ – like a fixed blueprint. What does not alter is the overarching business and football strategy, created by Wenger and developed by all the management, at all levels.

In the context, the hysterical shrieks of “if you ‘ave the bloody money why not spend it and win the league” as fuelled by certain rags ‘n blogs, are all about media manipulation. That is another story, they have their reasons. Buying in to this is the epitome of stupidity -not unlike believing zap-zap computer games are just like real war or monopoly is like real business.

Usmanov is creating leverage through this haze of ignorance and gullibility. One wonders to what extent he may be quietly financing it, because that would cost relatively little, and ‘buying’ a little media coverage is regular bully-corporate practice; happens all the time. The best response from the board and the fans is no response.

  147. Usmanov hired Shillings (the legal firm) to pre-emptively strike against any “dissidence” in the Arsenal blogosphere. For a man known to do business with an iron fist in Russia and Uzbekistan such high handedness is not surprising.

It is not inconceivable that Usmanov has cultivated a few hacks for positive PR as well. It is all too evident in the articles of newspapers especially those owned by Murdoch – The Times, Sun, NOTW, and also the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail. Supporters of all hues will have to unite to keep him at bay as matters will come to a head soon.

  148. Ateeb I was about to hug him but had to listen to stories of his massive support for us since the 60’s, his longstanding friendship with the tea lady and other amusing anecdotes first. Am still waiting for him to stop talking.

    ————————————————————

    Morning Alex,

you must have got me mixed up with another person. Can you elaborate,as all you state is wrong,or let me guess more sarcasm.

Endless stories since the 60’s ? Not to my recollection.

Long standing friendship with the tealady ? Nope.

“Am still waiting for him to stop talking” hardly ever post, fella.

Back your statements up fella, and I will defend myself every time you spout more drivel.

End of term report; tries hard, but could do better.

  149. Nigerian Fa Cup Final

    Teams: Enyimba v. Sharks

    Venue: Teslim Balogum Stadium, Lagos

    Time: 4pm LT, 3pm GMT

  150. The English media have failed in their attempt to unsettle players of Arsenal. Now, they have their shameful and disgusting acts to the board. Why are they always on the neck of LONDON’s most successful club? What do they really want?

  151. Alex,

Should’ve just listened to Yogi, and given him a hug.

  152. Big Fella Huggies should work too

  153. Morning Ateeb. I am trying to imagine a softer, more sensitive you.

    No, can’t do it.

Good stuff from Shotta, Spike, Marc and Zimpaul last night.

I do worry about this Usmanov business. You can put nothing past them. Him and his ilk are capable of anything. Dangerous people in many senses of the word. We are almpst there you know. As a club we are on the verge of great things while poking a stick in the eye of all the ’spend at any cost’ merchants out there. I can almose smell it.

Anybody who wants to follow the sugar daddy route to bankruptcy, I suggest that you look at the transfer rumours on the BBC football site. If those fees being bandied around are not sheer fantasy then the world really has gone (finally) to hell in a hand cart. Lunacy.

  154. Can you get those in Arsenal colours, G4E?

  155. I think we can CBob

    Trolls need them damn Huggies.

Did any one see the headline for the LG hack?

  156. Of what headline do you speak, G4E?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/8146365.stm

Here’s the link for the BBC site by the way.

  157. “Daily Mirror, I salute you! For once you’re right (oh and I’m being ironic).”

He added the “I’m being Ironic” part after people got on his back for saluting the hacks for saying that our policy of extending our youths contracts is a waste of money.

  158. Keep us updated on the score, GfN. I don’t suppose I will find a stream.

  159. Kelsey seems to be under the impression that you directed some words to me, YW. Would you remind me what they were please.

    in the mean time…..

    Fuck off, kelsey.

  160. Kelsey isn’t a troll, so he doesn’t deserve a hug. He’s just a prig who has come to the wrong blog.

  161. You are right Pz.

I will save my first hug for a proper troll.

I asume that it is still ‘de riguer’ here to rough up those who are not trolls on this site but merely twats?

  162. Hi guys…I know, I know, I said i’d never return but i’d like to say something to Kelsey…

    Kelsey…

I’d like to offer a different view on YW’s comment that you adressed.

it appears to me that after the recent blog war, ACLF came of the worst..

At the end of the day ACLF is a good blog, one of the best there is, and YW is a good writer, again one of the best their is…

but theres a few commentors on here who are alienating ACLF from the rest of the arsenal bloggs, making it an easy target and subject of negativity…

the constant un-needed attacks, false allegations and bitching about other blogs on here is nothing short of stalking and laughable and its making ACLF look bad…some of the bloggers on here seem to do nothing else but slag everything and everyone off. and see that as the perfect way of supporting arsenal but they couldnt be more wrongly informed…

not only are the other bloggers around the arsenal blog world getting tired of it but some of the ‘good’ contributors on here have grown tired of it too…take blackstock for example…

yogi has realised this and doesnt want this to continue, yet he doesnt want to upset his regular commentors.

his comment was put in the context to appease both…it appears YW was saying’look guys, i apreciate your loyalty to the blog, but stop the bullshit because you making my blog a laughing stock and its worth more than that’

his comment was designed to protect the decent people like yourself kelsey…who got off to a bad start but if are given a chance will be seen to be harmless….like YW says if they turn out to be retards he’ll just bin them… its not up to certain bloggers on here to chase the bloggers away, its up to YW, its his blog not theirs…

YW just lost control of his blog for a while, kelsey, and hes taken it back….diplomatically…dont read too much into it mate…

well done YW…about time…and i hope you start getting the recognition you deserve…

  163. As Kelsey reminded us yesterday, Sticks and stones may lead him to water, but words will never make him drink.

  164. I woke up this morning with thoughts of Philippe Senderos. So I wrote him a letter telling him he has the quality to make it at the top. He should stay and fight. And even if he leaves, he should still fight. He has the quality, and he has to be calm and be hungry to improve especially at this crucial pass in his career.

  165. Fuck off Jonjon.

Is that alright? I mean he’s not actually a troll is he?

  166. JonJon is a troll – The Troll King. Hug him if you want. I won’t.

  167. JonJon, you understand, came to Yogi’s fountain of truth; but instead of drinking the water, he pissed in it.

  168. This is now a dilemma. If he is not a troll I can tell him to fuck off. If he is, I should give him a hug.

I’ll go and pull some garlic while I muse on this.

  169. Kelsey, I can see your wit is exceedingly sharp. You are just too good for this place. End of term report card: Cant do better even if he tried.

  170. New post..

…Bob that was a good chance for you to perform the historic troll hug……

  171. Melo not signed to Juve yet. Speaking in Brazil he said he wont comment on a possible move to Juve until the deal is done. Which implies deal is not yet done.
