Bendtner, Ade-bye-bore and The Usual Guff

One mystery is resolved, Arsene’s interview as quoted in yesterday’s Daily Mirror and widely reproduced was in fact from the Official Arsenal Magazine, rather than being an exclusive bout of repartee as intimated by the, ahem, rag. Indeed, it was from the same interview from which this morning’s praise of Nicklas Bendtner is derived. In terms of the comments Arsene made, there is nothing more that he said about Bendtner.

There are parallels between Bendtner and Kevin Campbell. The latter was in football terms, an absolute monster for the reserves and youths, setting records that lasted through the years. As part of a double act, Campbell was partnered by Andy Cole who never made the grade at Arsenal although one wonders how much of that was George Graham or the player’s own impatience at not being given a first team chance. I have a vague recollection of Cole turning out at some point during the tedious 1991 Charity Shield against the Tiny Tots but nothing much more than that. Bendtner meanwhile was partnered by Arturo Lupoli who has become something of a journeyman even with his tender years, returning from Italy to The Championship.

The point with Bendtner is that his career at club and international level are not in tandem. He is well established in the Danish squad without securing a starting place in the Arsenal team. He is a player not short on confidence which is something that stood him in good stead during his barren run in the first half of the season and at times in the second half, particularly during the Blackburn game when even with a twenty foot goal, I suspect he would have skewed the ball wide. It was one of those afternoons for the lad. Every footballer in any position in any league has them. Some suffer them more frequently than others, fewer in a higher profile situation. Yet he came back for more, willing to put himself in a position to miss, a sign of his strength of character.

Bendtner’s character draws attention to himself. He has the self-belief that good strikers require, the confidence in his own abilities to help him through the hard times. His youthful exuberance will be curbed over time and I would have to agree with Wenger that such is his all-round game, the Dane has real possibilities of developing into a great centre-forward.

Which is just as well since Adebayor’s Mr20% is mouthing off once more, claiming that Adebayor would like to work with Ancelotti and has been contacted by ‘an important club’. Defining the word important would be key to understanding which club because unless they are direct rivals of Arsenal, for all intents and purposes, they are unimportant until the suitcase full of used fivers turns up in Gazidis’ office.

Apparently, Stephane Courbis spoke with Wenger and was not told that the player was for sale but assumed this to mean that Arsenal has ‘economic problems‘ which could be solved by his client moving. For Adebayor, the comments reflect badly in some eyes, further fuelling stances against him. I doubt that anyone would believe him if he issued a denial in the same manner as Sagna. It seems that the only thing he would benefit from in the PR sense would be a summer of silence from Team Adebayor.

I could waffle on about Toure to Manchester City as some seem to think will happen although reports this morning suggest they have offered Everton £15m and chocolate hobnobs for their Board meetings if the Toffees decide to let them have a Lescott. Apparently Everton will not even consider the bid unless Rich Tea’s are thrown in but have refused outright Garibaldi’s. Crumbs! That really takes the biscuit.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. I hope ade doesnt leave.

  2. Ade…just f**k off….we are happy to have the money.get someone who can score goals and play for the shirt.

  3. If he does we would be left with rvp, big nick, eddy, and vela, maybe walcott pushed further forward. I know he had a poor season last term, especially at the end, but against the top, top defences I would want adebeyor over any of them – having seen what he did to milan 2 years ago, a committed Ade is the best thing for the club.

  4. I think Ade should have a word with his agent. Because, if it is not true them his agent is causing him trouble.

I would like him to stay should he buck up his idea’s. However, as this seams unlikely then, get the money. And replace him.

Martin Samuel has written a piece on Cescleaving using the Pepe quotes. In the times they take a different stance and suggest the quotes are simply a sign of his admiration for Pepe, and not a signal he wants to leave.

    I know who I prefer.

    COME ONTHE GUNNERS

  5. We shouldnt be letting any talent go anyway, a deep squad is a good thing. Maybe a back up defender, but if all we really lack in the team is DCM and have funds for it then i think we are better off with players than money/ people getting settled.

Losing your best striker is not a good start to a season – ask manure. All the other big 4 look to be getting weaker, ronaldo, tevez, mascherano, alonso are massive losses. Chelsea look as dysfunctional as ever – bidding 17mil for johnson a year after getting bosingwa?

If we lose Adebeyor, Toure that is a LOT of talent out the door and more time getting settled. Ade had a shit season and missed a chunk through injury… he still got 16 goals. Fit and on form there are not many better in europe. (Villareal?)

  6. geoff stelling

Let Ade go.. when he plays it’s like only having ten men on the field..

sell him.. and buy a new striker.. simple

  7. This is so, so utterly boring right now. But thank you Yogi for still managing to come up with something interesting and entertaining to read.

All that can be said about Ade is like him or not, his goalscoring record and assists for Arsenal is fully worthy of your respect. If he doesn’t stay then i’m absolutely confident Eduardo and Bendtner can step up to the main stage next year. We’re not far off already, with just one or two signings we’ll have a team that can compete with anyone. A midfield of Arshavin and Rosicky on the wings, with Fabregas and Song/Denilson in the middle (or that Melo fella who will be linked with us all summer but probably won’t come), add to that Walcott and Nasri for backup i’d say that not much needs to be altered in midfield.

    Yawn… how long till Goodison…

  8. Ade wants to work with Ancelotti and Cesc is going to Barcelona…Yawn!

  9. Andrew cole was sacked for stealing!!!

  10. I won’t bother responding to the Ade gibberish. Its way boring….hell Yogi, I might as well recycle my own gibberish:

Anyone had a good look at a certain Dele Adeleye? He’s a world-class CB in the making of Rio Ferdinand. Wouldn’t cost more than 5m, aged 21, 6ft 2, a true defender who, I theresay, is more naturally gifted than ANY of our present CBs (sorry KT & WG)! Plays in Holland & has 4 caps for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

This guy would be the ROCK of our defence for the next decade. I really hope AW’s got his chequebook ready for this guy.
    (fingers crossed)

There…that’s my drivel for the day.
    RASERS!

  11. Gunner From Nigeria

Its strange for anybody to call for Adebayor’s sale. We are talking of keeping the squad together why some want another rebuilding process. Adebayor shouldn’t be sold. To hell with his agent.

  12. And guys, I am not his agent, friend, brother, or distant cousin. Just a fan who appreciates QUALITY & CLASS.

Adeleye is Nigeria’s best young player at the moment in my opinion.

  13. Aman

We dont need more young quality players, you not heard of Djourou, Vermaelen or Nortdviet mate??

What we need is all our quality CB’s to stay. Say what you want to downgrade Toure or Gallas but fact remains they are up there with the best in the world… this Adeleye has he won world cups and premierships before???

  14. arsenehollis

We’re tired of Ade, the betrayer. He was on the bench at Monaco when Arsene bought him and turned him into a 20-30 goals a season striker. He’s more interested in his retirement money than anything else. Ade just can’t be trusted.

Talking about the Milan game; he wasn’t that special except the goal he scored by a tap in. It was Theo who did everything, he just tapped it in, nothing special.

Any offer between 20-25 will be good money. AW should take the money and run with it.

  15. Patrick

take your support and run :)

  16. chrisG, I’d agree with you if Adeleye played like a naive youngster but NO man, this guy is mature beyond his years.

Do yourself a favour & search the net for any info or vid on him.
This guy is so good he’d START for ANY team (club or country)on the planet right now!

    Believe it!

  17. Sell him and use the money to buy Huntelaar!

  18. Aman

If he is that good im sure Wenger is keeping tabs on him. Right now we need consistency, and we need all our key players to stay. Its the only way we will move forward, plus i cant see Wenger really bringing in another CB unless 1 departs.

  19. GoonerGaz

    Huntelaarhaarhaarrr

  20. And I never said I wanted to lose any of our present CBs. Just to add more steel to our rearguard.

Can’t wait to see Vermalaen in action!

    RASERS!

  21. v, are you sure of what you said?

  22. Gunner From Nigeria

    @Aman

Dele Adeleye is good. But, he is not 21years.

    @Patrick

You always say we don’t buy but, you want one of our best sold. Not again, not another rebuilding season

  23. i hate agents in any walk of life, sercret agents, recruitment agents, estate agents, football agents most are liars and they all have their own agenda’s. mainly making a cut on ur sorry arse

  24. Patrick – I remember walking out of the san siro with the milan fans, i had sat in the home end, and al the talk was about how good we were and especially Ade and cesc. Even the opposition agreed he was immense.

Maybe we can sell him and get someone as good, maybe not. Maybe he stays and recaptures form, maybe not. I couldnt give a toss about what happened last year frankly. Maybe i am being too conservative, but i think we are better off keeping the team that made the last 4 in europe and top 4 in the league and adding to it, rather than flogging off key players for something new and unproven. Always takes players time to settle as attackers.

  25. YW,

I can’t find the original source of those quotes from Ade’s agent. I’ve been to calciomercato.com, and over there the article actually says Ade agent stopped all talk of Ade moving.

    http://www.calciomercato.com/index.php?c=all&a=129006

  26. I wonder if those calling for us to sell such a proven player are the same ones who complain about us being ‘selling club’. Probably.
We need to keep the squad together. End of story.

  27. Agent orange, Agent provocateur…bastards, I agree with geeGunner. Oh and free agents are a fucking outrage as well…

  28. Gunner From Nigeria

I’m pained at the continued contradiction of some supporters. They complain that we don’t have experience and, yet want the experience players sold. Where are those that were calling for Chellieni?
Its imperative that our players stay together.

  29. Nobody goes, dont have any of it Mr Wenger!

  30. I thought all football clubs were ‘selling’ and ‘buying’ clubs. How else do they get players? Since when was buying OK and selling not?. You will not get very far in life if you curl your lip at people trying to sell you stuff. Try going to your local shops, or maybe ebay….’uurgh I am not buying that from you, certainly not’…’why not?’…’well you are just a seller aren’t you?’…’yep thats the point, do you want it not?’…’naaah you are just a dirty seller’…’say that again, son, and you will be just a dead fucking buyer’….see it doesn’t work.

  31. Malaysiangunner

YW interesting post despite the summer doldrums

I wish Ade would stay and I woudl like the whole squad to stay together and united. But do we see Ade coming out to deny Mr 20% comments. Lets wait for it. If he does not want tostay ,we should get good money for him and buy someone who can lead the line just as well. Need some one tall and willing to battle hard to complement Dudu. Bendy may be the person but he could be a few years off his best so wee need someone ready.

All you Ade’s fans you better start writing to him to ask him to stay.

    We Are The Arsenal!!!

  32. Read yesterday someone simultaneously moaning that wenger had played youths in midfield who he had over-rated last season, whilst slagging the fact that we were looking to pay 15mil for Melo when we have apparently been tracking him for some time. You cant win either way with that, youth or experience is wrong, only perfection is acceptable when spending their season ticket money.

  33. Free agents are presumably in need of…an agent.

  34. “This doesn’t mean Ade is for sale to resolve Arsenal’s economic problems. I spoke with Arsene Wenger this morning and he told me nothing of the kind.”

    Ade’s agent

  35. In epidemiology agents cause disease…

  36. If a reasonable offer for ade comes wengers way then maybe there is something to contemplate. Ade not being up for sale shows wengers intentions i think though.

  37. Reagents are free agents who have been captured again…

  38. A gent is a very polite fellow…

  39. also… if wenger will contemplate an offer for any player i would expect he has a list of replacements lined up in the back of his mind.

  40. A generalisation, but very true: All agents are scum!

  41. If you paint a gents bollocks with a Gentian Violet stain they will turn blue, but any fungal infection will disappear almost immediately…

  42. Double agents are agents who represent pairs of football playing identical twins. You don’t see many of those about though….very rare.

  43. ..or maybe not as a rare as you might think….

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2007/oct/03/theknowledge

  44. I would very much like AW to get some twins for Arsenal. He probably has a scout who specialises in twins, well not just twins, triplets as well. Quadruplets is probably going a bit far though. The telepathic understanding between a set of quads in the back line would be amazing…probably argue a lot though.

  45. Does anyone really believe that Ade”s agent is not doing what his client wants. If not Ade would have sacked him.Adebayor is a bad apple who is going to poison the dressing room if he stays.Just compare his behaviour with that of RVP.

  46. The squad needs to stay together.

  47. peter

If you want to see what Adebayor really thinks of his situation, there is a really good interview by the BBC. Cant give you a link though im afraid. What he says is that he loves the club, and is hurt by the way the fans have treated him. He cant understand why the fans are on his back because other clubs were coming in for him.

It was maybe him saying hes had enough, or simply keeping his options open which is pretty fair considering the fact that he had to put up with fans booing him on return from several injuries, on his return from being our top scorer, on his return from getting us to the semi’s… I would keep my options open too in all honesty.

If he is here in august still i will be supporting him all the way, he is an amazing talent and proven 30+ goalscorer. We wont find any1 who can come in and get us that tally in their 1st season. Ade being fit for the whole of last season would have certainly got him a minimum 20 goals. Nobody can argue that… so how on earth people try to slag him off is beyond me. Let the guy play football. Ignore the summer bullshit for once please.

  48. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/football_focus/8053447.stm

That is the link for the bbc interview, it is excellent. He makes clear that fans support can make a big difference to the players and basically our fans were pretty shit last year. Fair play, he is demanding the same loyalty form the stands as the spectators do of him. Quality player, it is best for the club if he stays AND the fans rally behind him and the team. Put last year to bed and help move forward to the title.

  49. Gunner From Nigeria

Agents whatever industry they are involved in are parasites. They are one of the reasons why house lease or rent are so expensive in some places in Nigeria.

  50. To be fair to Adebayor, this is the same interview that caused ructions last month, the clue being that the page was last updated on 16th May.

    YW

  51. Sell Adebayor’s agent for 3m. Deal with this situation once and for all.

  52. cheers arsenehollis

  53. Oh FFS, get off the “sell Ade” bandwagon you tossers. You don’t have a clue about anything. Unless you are Adebayor, his agent, or perhaps his best mate you had best keep your mouth shut about it. Some of you lot seem to think that Adebayor and his agent are gathered around a table in a dark room, single lamp hanging from the ceiling, cigar smoke wafting around, and plotting the downfall of The Arsenal. Talk about paranoid freaks. You lot sound like a bunch of babies.

  54. Kill Adebayor’s agent.

  55. How can we sell an agent who cannot even sell his own player!! If someone can sell ade’s agent, they could prove to be some sort of super agent

  56. Muppet

Thats the best comment ive heard all day!

  57. Finsburyparker on June 24, 2009
    at 1:42 pm

Very good read – that was very insightful and there were loads of intracacies regarding particular player roles and positioning.

its a lot deeper than simply lining up 4-4-2 or having ‘two banks of four’ (i hate that saying) analysis that you get esp from MOTD

  58. ChrisGoona

We slag Ade off because of his i dont care attitude last season.Yes the season before he scored 30 goals but last season his performances fell well short of a top 4 team striker.Nothing better summed up his season than the two CL semi final games v Man Utd in which he didnt break sweat.
Why doesnt Ade sack his angent?

  59. Calm the fuck down. No need to kill his agent, when we can create more havoc by selling him to one of our arch rivals. Sell him for 3m, add 2m and buy shit-u!!

  60. Finsburyparker

I think Wenger has done too much experimenting in the last season or so to stick to a 4-4-2. We really need to find our own formation to suit our best 11, thats when we find our best 11 of course! Its easy to say Barca’s best 11 or Man Utd, with our team we have many players knocking on the door. Do you go with Walcott or Nasri, Arshavin or RvP, Adebayor or Bendtner, Clichy or Gibbs, Denilson or Song, Eduardo or Vela, Cesc or Rosicky… there will be many questions put to Wenger this coming season. The options are there, hopefully we get the best out of the players and see where we end up come next May.

  61. peter

I know its absolutely shocking how he only managed 16 goals and all those assists while having all the fans on his back plus several injuries … absolutely shocking of him isnt it?

  62. peter,

You’re nuts. Adebayor’s 6 Cl goals were very instrumental into getting us into the CL smei-finals for the 2nd time in our history.

He had 2 long spells out due to injury, and played through an ankle niggle for a while. Yet he still scored one goal every 2 games.

  63. MOTD analysis is so poor – i can remember watching the euro championships last yr when germany played croatia and the whole panel gave a german win for no particular reason than that they were germans. marcel desailly on the other backed croatia and gave a good reason. the panel laughed at marcel b4 kick off. come halftime it was 2-0 to croatia they went backto the studio for analysis-allofthe pundits had egg on the faces so when asked to explain – shearer explanation as ever ‘they got in their faces’.(typical MOTD analysis from their typical pundits)

When marcel was asked he mentioned the mobility of the croatian’s particularly their fullbacks and midfield.(better analysis)

  64. YW,

Do you know where those Ade agent quotes came from? The original source?

  65. geeGunner

sounds a bit like Peter’s analysis of Adebayor!

“We slag Ade off because of his i dont care attitude last season.”

I know, great way to sum his season up, 16 goals and assists from a player who was injured for half the season!!

Peter you know supporters like you are slagged off for your “I read the Sun too much!” attitude… get with the program mate, try supporting your players a bit yea

  66. Peter – The whole team was shit against manure in those 2 games, although the second leg was dead. How many chances did ade have created for him in those games? Cesc was rubbish to, why not suggest he goes to barca, look how his goal tally dropped off last season? Ade’s goal against Villareal turned that tie and it was fucking brilliant. The spanish press were laughing at the fact that the only fans in europe who dont rate ade are arsenal fans after that game. Quality player who had a rough season, in part because he got no support – you expect him sweat blood whilst you boo?

I think we should start next season without a set formation or first 11. Our squad, if we keep everyone, is good enough to rotate. Pick the formation to suit the players. Personally i think that will be 4-3-3, although we need our wide forwards to have better movement. Walcott, Rvp, arshavin need to go all over, not just hug the touchline.

  67. Does anyone even know if that is really Ade’s agent? Sakho said some dude he didnt know was speaking for him, same thing happened with arshavin – it might all be bollox anyway.

  68. geeGunner

sounds a bit like Peter’s analysis of Adebayor!

    ??

    so you like motd analysis?

dont really know what peters talking about.

  69. The Ade situation is exactly my point about sections of the press.

They “report” that he’s after £80k a week, they “report” that he’s causing trouble and before you know it, fans are booing his name. They “reprise” old articles and claim that its new.

The reality we don’t know what went on behind closed doors. We don’t know if the guy speaking for him is really speaking for him.

Judge his performances if you think he’s not playing well enough by all means but I’ve yet to read a critisim of him without his alleged salary being quoted. Has any actually seen his wage slip?

  70. arsenehollis

“you expect him sweat blood whilst you boo?”

Exactly my point, sections of the fans were on his back from day 1, they were waiting there for Ade to stop scoring, even the greatest players like Henry had bad patches. His 1st season with Barca… last 2 seasons with us?? Going by what we expected from Henry, and knowing that Barca were out on the hunt for our greatest player, Henry got very good treatment from our fans in light of the situation and his poor performances in the last 2 seasons. You can argue all you want that Adebayor hasnt achieved anything but fact of the matter is he has been treated very very badly… (its a sort of guilty untill proven innocent attitude coming from our fans)

For a guy that is at the beginning of his career and is showing very promising signs to being an Arsenal great this attitude towards him is piss poor. Dont be surprised if he does leave and others to follow in future if this attitude continues.

  71. geeGunner

I meant that the attiude Peter had with Adebayor was a bit like that off the piss poor analysis from MOTD in your example

  72. Screw the quotes. We can never be sure whose telling the truth. Sell ade’s agent n buy scholes agent. Never seen him get linked ever.

  73. Queen of Suburbia

Nobody on here can make a fair judgement on the guy in truth. He is judged purely by his hair style, lanky legs, and comments reported by the most trust worthy newpapers in Britain!

  74. Ill be his agent, give me £1000 a week and ill shut my mouth

  75. Rumor was Cole was a thief and stole from his fellow players.

  76. I was mates with 1 of Cole’s nephews, he was a bit thuggish to say the least.

  77. Adebayor is class, and should not be sold – i am suprised any Arsenal fan can say otherwise.

He perhaps needs to learn to keep his mouth shut, but can anyone who attends the Emirates and hears people boo him say that there is not a lot of truth in what he said in his interview?

There are not too many strikers around who can offer what Ade does…

    Just check his stats! ;-)

  78. California Gooner

I actually think Adebayor would be better in a 4-3-3. Arsene has been trying to remake him as a classic striker leading the line. It makes sense given his size and strength. However, it is clear that he doesn’t like it and that it isn’t intuitive to him. He is much more comfortable drifting towards the ball — often out at the side– than he is waiting for it.

On the other hand, I do think his attitude may be a problem. If the team starts out strong, then that isn’t a problem. Winning seems to be infectious. But when things aren’t going well he could be very disruptive.

  79. Finsburyparker

    Hey ChrisGoona,
    Am off & on line.

Yup. you’re right about our tactics last season.
I wouldn’t compare internantional football, especially Brasil, to playing in the EPL. Just thought it was a good article.

Having said that Brasil were the first national team to put out a 1st XI of Creatine & growth hormone fuelled monsters, I’m sure they could handle the likes of Stoke! & their tactics have been innovative.

Interesting post on that link by another Guardian journo who says that when he asked Carlos Alberto if that team did have a flexible formation, with MS slotting back as a third CB, the old legend denied it with such bluster, he thought it was the correct understanding of Brasil’s tactics.

I do think the way AFC play at the moment is not that radically different to the current Brasil set up, the amount the FB’s push on or even Toure or Gallas, means that the deepest midfielder often slots back into defence, more or less, which is something I’ve seen at AFC.

  80. Finsburyparker

that team = Brasil ’94 team!

  81. Almost all of us fans expect our players to show their loyalty to the club both on and off the field. Any perceived failure to “give 100%” on the field or deny transfer rumours off the field is lambasted and the player is hung out to dry.

Yet every summer some gooners try to look for every player trading opportunity they can get. Regardless of whether a player is performing or is going through a lean patch. If a player is performing below potential, then he must be sold because “he is’nt good enough for Arsenal” and if he is performing and a rumour of a big money transfer comes, then the money is often deemed to be good enough to sell the player.

When a RvP to Inter Milan for 25 million rumour emerged, to some fans that was a great offer for “an injury prone underachieving player”. Same for the Gael Clichy/ Bacary Sagna to Real Madrid for 20 million rumour.

Loyalty should be applicable both ways. Do fans who clamour for player trading excessively in the summer have the moral authority to demand unfailing loyalty from his team’s players?

  82. Man, I think it would be nuts to get rid of Adebayor unless he definitely wanted to go. Apart from much-needed continuity within the sqaud, we’d lose a quick, strong, aerially dominant, technically gifted striker with a great scoring record.

Sometimes I wonder if the R-word is appropriate to describe Adebayor’s haters. What reason could there be to want to ditch our one player with a proven record for leading the line. It defies common-sense. Anyone replacing Ade – whether Bendtner or new signing – would need time to adapt and, looking at our opening fixtures, time is something we don’t have.

I think he messed up a little bit last summer, and he’s a tad naive when he talks to the press, but at this point he has told us that he wants to stay – whatever we hear from agents – which is all we need to know.

Still, like the Denilson debate, I don’t this one’s going to be settled in an afternoon.

  83. Jeez, what a mess. Well, you get the gist…or not!

  84. OOU,

Like many fans of rival teams, a section of our support does’nt seem to truly appreciate the value of a player until he has left or comes to the verge of leaving. Familiarity does seem to breed contempt.

If Adebayor played in the La Liga and scored 46 goals in two seasons in a top 4 Spanish team, many gooners would drool in excitement looking at his you tube compilations and clamour for his signing.

The other case is that of a RvP. In his injury hit previous seasons when fans saw 15-20 games from him he was hailed as a wizard. When they got the opportunity to familiarise themselves with him for the whole season this time around, he suddenly is “not indispensable and only a shadow of the player Arshavin is.” Despite scoring 20 times and carrying the team through many a lean patch.

How long before Arshavin’s own honeymoon period with these breed of fans ends is anybody’s guess.

  85. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ah ah ha ha ha ha

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha aha ha

  86. I aggree with Alex.

And I back the suggestion of making ChrisGoona, Ade’s agent. But can we trust him to remain loyal to us with all the money flying around?

  87. Ateeb, I think ChrisGoona can be trusted in matters of money as Ade’s new agent. What I dont know is how he will react when Beyonce comes calling.

  88. It is clear to even the FA that fake tan Brown is a LIAR. Wish the fine was atleast 25,000 pounds and not 2,500.

  89. California Gooner

Alex, the doubts about Adebayor come from two places. The numbers are very impressive, but there is a sense that he doesn’t do somethings we expect from a top striker. First, he cannot beat his man from a dead-stop. Second, he rarely shoots or scores from outside the box. So, there is a perception that he is simply the man to finish off the work of our incredible midfield but he is not someone who can create things on his own — the spectacular example of his Villareal goal apart.

Are those criticisms fair? Probably not. But TH14 set the standard at Arsenal and Adebayor’s more frenetic but less elegant style of play looks a lot worse, even if the results are there.

  90. Fair enough California Gooner. Though as yourself admit, a comparison with TH14 is not something most players, even top players can live with.

  91. CG,

I don’t care where he scores from. He scores a lot of great goals and he scores a lot of important goals. I wish he’d concentrate a whole lot more. I hope he’ll be more direct. He’s a very fast player who can actually dribble. He should do more, and keep improving because he can be a lot better.

  92. California Gooner

Fair enough Alex and Ole — I guess the final criticism is the perception that lots of strikers could score goals in our system. One way to test that is to get rid of him and see what happens. Those who want that, of course, will have to live the possibility that it turns out to be false and that we go through another season of anguish… perhaps safer to keep him around until other clear options emerge.

  93. All the indications are that Martin Samuels has completed his induction and has now been fully assimilated into the Daily Wail and its doings.

  94. He writes his articles with electrodes on his testicles and a cattle prod up his arse. If he fails to write shit about Arsenal they throw the switch. He held out for a short while but….bit sad really.

  95. If Ade is causing problem’s behind the scenes Wenger will get him out – end of.

    Anyone remember Petit?

  96. Midfield player used to play for Arsenal, Marc? That him?

  97. Alex,

    Sorry for the delay.

    On double standards…

I’m reckon the whole club-loyalty thing among players is a bit of a myth. For starters, I can’t blame any player wanting to leave a team for more money, or to win things (that doesn’t mean I’ll like them for it though).

Really, what on Earth do they owe the fans? Especially when the fans never get behind them unless they set the world alight, and sometimes, as is the case with Denilson, that’s not even enough.

Guys like Pires, Henry and Bergkamp only became heroes because they were excellent players. Of course they love the Arsenal supporters now, but that’s because we got behind them ONCE they’d demonstrated their fantastic ability.

I remember murmurs of dissent when Bergkamp took a few games to get off the mark. And nobody was singing Pires’ name until well into his second season at the club.

The exceptions – guys that got away with being less effective – were cult heroes like Parlour and Perry Groves. Sadly, I think it helped a lot that they were white and from the same kind of background as most of the fans. A foreign player with the same level of ability wouldn’t have enjoyed the same reception….

It’s that fans as a big group are stupid (even more than me), a little prejudiced and nostalgic, and their evaluation of players shouldn’t be trusted.

    This is horribly cynical…and I don’t know where I’m going with it…

Maybe it’s that fans should accept that they don’t know very much about football, even if they go to matches every fortnight.

And they should get behind any player while he still figures in the manager’s plans. If you support the club, you should support the players and the manager. It’s the only sensible thing to do if you want the club to succeed.

A season ticket barely gives the fans the right to question anything. The most they should expect is a seat appropriate for the price, and a clean place in which to shit or piss. That’s about it.

  98. .

  99. I think that young people (under 50s) should take up gardening. They might then understand the need for planning, preparation and most of all the need for patience in waiting for results. Capability Brown is one of my heroes.

  100. When I say heroes, I know fuck all about him. In fact when I just thought of him, that was the first time I have thought of him,well…er..ever. But he was very patient.

  101. You have very basic requirements, Big Al!

  102. Ranting on a street corner near you.

Look, I know a lot of that was bollocks. I want to try and express about the relationship between fans and their clubs:

Football teams are turning into brands.

I hate branding. I absolutely loathe the notion of it.

It’s just an idea cooked up by wannabe Goebbels trying to exert subtle control over people – only now it’s to get people buy stuff. It’s just sick.

More than that, I hate the way it’s now invading sport.

A good example was last year when Man U was commemorating the Munich anniversary.

In a move straight out of the “lovemarks” playbook, AIG slapped a massive billboard outside Old Trafford, with a team photo from that year, their corporate logo prominent, and the tagline, “Sharing your memories”. Or some shit.

That’s branding intruding into fans’ loyalty for a club. Pretty sucky.

I thought it was horrific at the time, but now I think that whenever paying fans complain about performances – like disgruntled customers on Watchdog – I feel they’re contributing to a process in which clubs are becoming a little like products on shelves, or services.

If they don’t perform the way you want, you can complain because you’re a paying customer.

OK, sorry for that. And it’s just my impression.

  103. Exemplified perfectly by that ridiculous name for the Arsenal Stadium, OoU.

  104. Great posts today, Arsenehollis and Big OneOfUs especially.

    @Gunner4Ever
    !

  105. Sorry, that was: “I want to try and express something that *troubles me* about the relationship between fans and their clubs..”

    -

Yes, actually that’s proof that it’s here to stay, Frank. I don’t know if it’s too late to be bothered by all this!

  106. Exemplified perfectly by that ridiculous name for the Arsenal Stadium, OoU.

How many more years of the deal to run?

  107. Question about Adebayor…

Since some of our fans don’t really rate Adebayor at all as an Arsenal material, what do you think about selling him to the Shameskis?

  108. Are there insufficient lavatories at The Emirates? Perhaps that’s why as soon as they get home the fans shit and piss on the blogs.

  109. I believe that we are stuck with the name until 2019, FG. By which time it will probably change to Yellow Pages Stadium or Carphone Warehouse Stadium or something equally as horrifying.

  110. OK, PZ. Maybe it will be the Izal Stadium next.

  111. @ Frank

    Please God, no!

  112. Actually when you think about it we got off quite lightly being sponsored by the Emirates.

  113. Sometimes, of course, the fans can’t wait till they get home, so they shit on the players instead.

  114. Why not, they say. We’ve spent good money on these tickets, so we have the right to shit wherever we please.

  115. I think it would have been better if we had been sponsored by the Home Retail Group. We would then have the Home Stadium.

Away Fan: ‘We at home or away this weekend?’
    Other away Fan: ‘Away’
    Away Fan: ‘Where we playing?’
    Other Away Fan: ‘Home’
Away Fan:’Thought you said we are away’
Other away fan ‘Yes but we are playing at Home’
Away Fan:’you pulling my plonker, fuckface, lets start again…are we at home or away this weekend?’
    Other Away Fan: ‘Away…………

  116. Jus seen vital chelsea disscussion on ade. some of the comments there are dum, they clearly dont want ade -and i dont wanna us to sell but…

didier droga scored 95 goals in 209 matches
adebayor scored 62 in 142 matches with 21 assists.

    both are very good records

drogba has scored 33 more goals in 67 matches more than ade (included are FA cup and carling cup matches which ade hardly plays in).

yet drogba is seen as 10 x better than ade. even comparing torres’s stats ade is comparable to him and in some cases has better stats.

  117. Remarkably sane blogging today folks. Maybe the message is getting through – let’s hope so.

  118. geeGunner,

    It’s irrational. It’s madness. It’s modern football.

  119. Alex Ice Cream

I have been one of Ade’s biggest critics but I would want him to stay assuming that he does. Why? Well our biggest problem other than injuries has been losing too many players. We have a poor history of replacing outgoing players and there are not many decent strikers out there for less than silly money.

Also I am willing to give Ade the benefit of the doubt for a very ordinary season last year. If he expresses a desire to leave though then get rid asap. I would help Ade to pack his bags if that were the case.

  120. Finsbury Park – To me, appart from the analysis, the most interesting Arsenal-related part of that Brazil link was the posters generally negative assessment of Gilberto Silva; old, slow and an atrocious passer were the unanimous thread. Yet we still have morons posting on this blog bemoaning AW’s selling of Gilberto and the promotion of Denilson.
Thank god I am not old and senile, my eyes are good to see what happens on a football field and I depend on my own assessments of players not depend on the opinion of others.

  121. I’ve just read a version of what Ade’s agent said and despite the headlines that tried to suggest Ade was leaving the body of the quotes seemed to say he was staying.
perhaps I’m paranoid, but I do sometimes feel sections of the press set out to destabilise Arsenal.
The incredible critisism AW comes in for at times and the constant clutching at straws to find stories of our players leaving.
Are all the press spurs fans or just francophobes refighting the 100 yrs and Napoleonic wars?

  122. JohnN,

If the front of the Newspaper operated with the same disgraceful standards of the football pages, there’d be a war everyday.

Can you imagine a headline everyday along the likes of “North Korea obtains 500 US nuclear weapons”, and 98% of them completely baseless?

  123. True
It was when showbiz journalists moved to the serious news that the BBC put it’s foot in it’s mouth and the dg had to resign.
Maybe the papers could switch thier political journos to sport.
Then we would hear from “unofficial sources” and off the record briefings rather than agents!

  124. JohnN,
It wasn’t always this bad. It gets worse all the time. Even papers like the Times & Telegraph just lift quotes from some obcure publication and base an article on it as if they’d interviewed the subject. There’s a Wenger article in the Telegraph that I’d bet my left ball is not based on an interview with Arsene. Instead they slap a “Telegraph writers” into the byline and publish it.

    It is a disgrace.

  125. OG
    quite agree
You read an article then remember seeing the quotes a month or so ago some where else.
Or the french football mag which might be a monthly publishes a bunch of quotes taken from old press conferences and passes them of as an interview and all the english press sources report it as something new!

  126. What’s all this guff about Wenger coming out and saying that fans are demanding 100 million to be spent. If you ask me this is total and utter incontrovertible proof that he and the board has lost the plot. The board, a bunch of children who should grow up and start behaving like businessmen should step in and make an unequivocal statement about how much Wenger has to spend, so we can all stop speculating on the blog sites and more accurately predict what players will be coming in.

So far, in this pathetic transfer window, we have signed a midget from Amsterdam, and are rumoured to be signing a clown from Bordeaux. Lord only knows how Wenger is going to perform at the next Q&A session, because it’s pretty clear that Hull will be outspending us in this window.

We deserve more as fans. I deserve more, more to the point. Instead we get spin, crocks on the cheap and news that Wenger is on the other side of the world dodging his commitments at home looking at third rate countries attempt to play football. Ticket prices have gone up again, and we are told the club is skint. What a farce.

  127. Lmao..ha ha.

  128. Muppert – you missing them that much? It’s been a slow day for nutters here (with the few obvious exceptions) sadly Untold Arsenal has been getting a few. Now there’s a proper Arsenal supporting blog like what this one can be at it’s best.
Is it time for Barnet yet? Are we nearly there yet? I need a wee.

  129. When are we playing Barca? Does anyone know?

  130. I thought it was something like the 25th of July.

  131. 22nd May 2010.

  132. We’re playing a UNICEF charity match against Barcelona this summer innit?

  133. 13 July – FC Barcelona v Arsenal (UNICEF Charity Match) – Unconfirmed.

  134. I don’t care what anybody says. For my money, Fabregas is a better footballer than Xavi. Call me blighted go on. Insult me. But I think Cesc has so much more to his game all-round than Xavi.

Xavi is the consummate passer. Very accurate distribution, but he can’t match Cesc’s passing range; dropped, chipped, long, short, spun, and again and again, when they play in the same team, Cesc keeps getting more assists and key passes.

  135. lol DukeGoonem – you meant next season champions league final.

  136. U.S.A…offense!!! offense!!!

  137. Do they sing that in football aswell??

  138. sorry soccer

  139. Also, Cesc is playing on the right of a 4-man midfield tonight for Spain. Is that the future for Cesc? can he do that in the Premier League?

It seems not to be affecting his game for Spain.

  140. He’s not spending much time on the right, but he is playing well.

  141. Looks like he’s been given a free role, PZ. It’s the only way to deploy him I suppose…..give him a free role.

  142. To Ole’s point, I don’t think Barca would miss a beat with Cesc in for a Xavi. My guess is this is Cesc’s last year for Arsenal, regardless of how the team performs. If we win the league, he can say that he’s accomplished what he wanted to accomplish with Arsenal. If we finish fourth or fifth, his frustration with the lack of silverware would likely be cited as the impetus for his departure to Barca. That’s why it’s important to get a veteran in there next to him this year so there’ll be some semblance of continuity going forward. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves.

  143. Are the USA better the England?

They always seem to get out of their groups and do well at tourns.

  144. then

  145. He takes a free role wherever he’s played.

  146. The way Donovan skipped past Xabi Alonso for the yank goal, Denilson’s mother must have been smiling down. Imagine that had happened to Denilson?

  147. ha ha…Alonso has been quite poor i think. that is an over rated player if ever there was one. And you can add that Mascherano to the list.

  148. And Riera..and now that bog stealing chav Johnson.

  149. Infact the whole of Liverpool fc and liverpool the city of culture.

  150. Ha! It’s like watching Arsenal v any team that has come to the Emirates and scored an early goal over the last couple of years.

  151. Surprising to see Fabregas taken off. He was playing very well.

  152. Cesc taken off…65th minute.

  153. USA….Click Click Click

  154. Isn’t Cazorla the guy who was injured and couldn’t
    play against us for Villareal?

2-0! They should never have taken Cesc off!

  155. Spain need a deep-lying midfielder to protect their defence.

  156. Flamini?

  157. Well, at least Cesc’s holiday is coming a bit earlier.

  158. Alonso’s given a masterclass in losing possession.

  159. That’s what happens when you take off your best player.

  160. did they underestimate the US?

    evening all!

  161. Cesc’s going to get a vacation! Yippee….

Boy didn’t look to happy to come off. I’d have said he’d been their most creative player. Why’d they take him off?

  162. It’s a mystery, Ole. Perhaps he was getting tired.

  163. Ah crap, there’s a 3rd place play-off still to come. Still, who are we to stand in the way of Cesc’s dream to come 3rd at the Confederations cup.

  164. Pz, you say Cesc was playing well? I didn’t see the match but the text commentary on ESPN (go figure) said he was below par like the rest of Spain. The comentator also said he had a yellow stripe on his head like a skunk…any truth to that either?

  165. Well Cesc was the best of a bad bunch so why take him off. Alonso should have come straight off and made to stand in the corner.

  166. Pz, could he be getting blame for the 1st goal?

  167. Gris Gris,

I just saw the highlights again, and Cesc was behind most of their chances by far.

  168. Fabregas played well, in my opinion. He did have some kind of stripe on his head, but he didn’t look like a skunk. Alonso’s play stank like a skunk. Spain weren’t awful. I don’t think it’s fair to say they were just a bad bunch.

  169. Good to know, thanks guys. It sucks being at work where I can’t do anything other than the commentary. Forgot to set the DVR to record the match too.

  170. I don’t think the result can just be dismissed as a poor performance by Spain. USA played well. They certainly defended bravely, and they attacked when they could – with obvious effect. It was only (and I say this without bias) the Liverpool men who I particularly noticed playing badly. Alonso was worst. I also thought Riera was poor. The substitutes were not from Liverpool, but they made zero impact.

  171. Well Pz, you take out Fabregas and slap on Cazorla?

Torres and Villa is probably where to look. They had some fairly straghtforward early chances that they didn’t do justice to.

  172. What about Wimbledon? anyone watching?

  173. That young man Altidore is a very interesting prospect, he may be able to make some noise in years to come.

  174. The Russian slut is out I hear Paul N.

  175. Sharapova, you mean?

  176. F*ck wimbledon. Why cant sky or espn buy the rights for that shit.

  177. I think Del Bosque must have gone to the same school of strategic genius as Benitez.

  178. Yes I meant Sharapova. I always mix up her name with the other Russian slut…

  179. Queen of Suburbia

    The Stratego school, PZ?

  180. Could be.

  181. I don’t know anything about Sharapova’s personal life, but her shrieking seems excessive.

I was going to liken it to a scenario involving the lesser Ronaldo, but in the interests of good taste I’ll refrain.

  182. I find the Wimbledon rather delightful(tennis on a whole), you can blame my dad for that. The sport I cannot enjoy is golf, though I watch a little if Tiger Woods is playing.
Now they have started to show gambling on tv, showing that on TV to me is crap!

    Darts anyone? Eric Bristow.

    Snooker? steve Davis, is it?

  183. I cant stand the blasted screaming in tennis, Monica Seles started that foolishness!

  184. Paul N,

You showing your age mate. Eric Bristow!

  185. yeh Duke! thats when i was a real youngster.

  186. People pointing to Ade’s 30 plus season are overlooking the equal or greater number of absolutely gilt-edged chances he flubber. I have very little doubt we would have been champions in 07-08 with a more clinical stiker.

  187. Shanpaan – Objective measures of a striker would be a stat, such as goals/chances (hit ratio), shots on/off target, etc. Or else, it is just a matter of opinion. It doesn’t take much to state that a more clinical striker than Ade would increase our points and thus a better final position in the table. I guess that there are subjective views behind the unpopularity of Ade. If our team is not over-endowed in the forward position, I would advocate keeping Ade to have greater strength in depth.

  188. BarneyStinson

Now this is what The Sun is claiming that Cesc said. Appears to me that they have chose not to publish some of his words and also haven’t reported the exact questions the interviewer asked. They appear to be honest answers to speculative questions. But the headline that goes with it is “IMPOTENT”. I hate this sh*t stirring.

“The absence of titles at Arsenal is what angers me the most.

“Cristiano said he’s leaving Manchester United because he had nothing else to win. For me right now it is the exact opposite, seeing the impotence.

“This year we wanted it, we were giving everything – but we couldn’t reach the level that everyone expected of Arsenal.

“When you win, you’re well. But when you don’t, everyone is in a bad mood. For four years now, we’ve needed a title to regain our belief in ourselves.”

“My seventh season is about to start. It’s a lot when you’re just 22. When you stop to think, you see that time flies.

“In football, you have to learn fast and take the best decisions for yourself and try to be happy.”

“Of course my family would understand if I signed for Real Madrid because they love me, they want me to be happy and what is best for me. They’d support me – whichever club I joined. My family will always be there for me – whatever decision I make.

“They’re the ones who are always by my side.”

“At the moment it’s not happened so I don’t have to choose. For any player it gives great pride that those two clubs come to sign him. It would be a difficult choice.”

Yet the Arsenal midfielder insists he would not force his way out by publicly declaring his desire to leave.

He continued: “I will never do that. It’s not the way I am.

“If I have to say I want to leave I will do it face to face.

“If one day I’m not happy, I am the first who will tell the manager.”

He added: “I admire Arsene Wenger but each of us has his own life and looks after his own interests.”

He said: “It’s difficult. What is clear is that, if you’re at a club that doesn’t win anything, the fans want to see new faces. They want to have hope.

“I am well in England. What happens is that every player likes to win and at Arsenal we’ve won nothing for the last four years.

“It’s difficult to explain how good the camaraderie is in the Spain team.

“I am now at Arsenal, where there isn’t this social group which is so human, so friendly, a group of normal people like my friends and we don’t talk about things too much.”

  189. Cesc is an ungratefull little swine. Dont lie to yourselves, this has been brewing for a while. Let the little swine leave

  190. BarneyStinson

^ Thats exactly the reaction these hacks want from you.

  191. Why are you so quick to let the Sun influence your opinion of a player?

It’s one the last places Arsenal fans should go for accurate coverage!

  192. Exactly, BS!

  193. Barney, Rubbish, he’s obviously said it. Why say anything? Theres noone to blame for this latest insult to us fans than Cesc himself

  194. Tommy

You need to be immunised against the viruses spread by such articles. Alternatively, read them with a large spoonful of salt.

  195. I see this noone fellow is back talking to Tommy. You do talk so bollox Tommy, just a mix of the headline crap you read.

  196. Luke, I am the last person to want him to leave, he is our only world class midfielder and we will struggle without his presence in the squad. But for gods sake why do they have to talk to the press? They know how it will look so why do they do it? There must be a reason and the only reason is to invite offers

  197. The days of heroes are well and truly gone. Players are human after all and the money on offer is too great to refuse. Add to that the fact most of our ex heroes hate us now and its extremely depressing

  198. Tommy

See what I mean about such articles being spread like a H1N1 virus in a pandemic? Articles are multiplying in the media citing the same “Impotent” source.

  199. Oh, either lighten up or fuck off, Tommy

  200. Luke, the source i Fabregas you moron

  201. Frank, blow me

  202. I casnt wait for the denial -

‘It was taken out of context’ ‘I did say it but i didnt mean it’ ‘I’m well happy, cant you tell’

Its not fair on the thirty thousand fans who stay till the end singing every week, never booing, supporting the club 100%, its a disgrace that the players insult us like this. Any of you who disagree are obvously not dedicate fans who are there every week

  203. Tommy – you have ceased to exist in my world from this very moment.

  204. Fuck you, Tommy, you are a charlatan

  205. Samuels started this and now every poisonous hack toad under the lump of shit called the Press and Media is hopping on board. Any Arsenal supporter who buys any of this stuff is an idiot!

  206. It is idiots like Tommy who will eventually drive the players out.

  207. i understand that tommy is a twat but it is suprising to see so many rise to cescs defence even though he probably did say those things and when adebayors agent talks everyone is on ades back saying we should sell him. all i ask for is some consisitency and so i hope we boo cesc most of next season and no matter how much he denies the comments we pray to sell him for another unknown midfielder and anyway we have merida

  208. You actually hope we boo Cesc for most of next season anthony…really? You see nothing wrong with that position, son?

  209. I see several blogs are using these so-called ‘comments’ from Cesc for their own ends….undermine the manager in most cases. What a fucking rotten bunch of supporters we have…absolutely rotten.

  210. Frank we have rotten players as well

  211. Ah, you reveal yourself, Tommy……which team do you actually support?

  212. Frank, typical rose tinted response. Laughable, you’ll have to do better then that

  213. Watch out for sensational headlines with verbs/adjectives like, lashes, blasts, slams, disappointed, angry, furious, etc.

  214. Naaaah…..you are a waste of time, Tommy….

  215. Thanks, Tommy, by the way. We occasionally need a doomer for demonstration purposes. A stooge. You turned up just on time and played your part.

  216. Frank, nope, still not good enough i’m afraid kiddo

  217. You have all the makings of a complete arsehole, Tommy. You’re not the finished article yet, but with the dedication you’ve shown this morning I’m sure you’ll achieve your ambition in the end.

  218. Too late, Tommy…you are in. Go ahead we are all watching.

  219. Luke, how do explain cesc’s comments then? Why does he make them after all the crap thats been written already?

  220. What an absolute moron. Tommy how can you read and post so often without realising you are on an Arsenal supporters blog? We are supporters ergo we support – we don’t follow journalists who hate Arsenal and repeat what they want us to repeat. We support. We’re supporters. You getting it? Halfwit.

  221. Frank, your still not there frank, keep trying though son

  222. Devastating rapier like questions. You a QC, Tommy?

  223. Can someone explain why Cesc went to the press? Anyone?

  224. Can someone else explain why Tommy is wasting our time? Anyone?

  225. Oh he’s done it again! Stunning.

  226. Frank, keep going kiddo, you’ll get there in the end.

    Can anyone answer the question?

  227. Tommy here’s the interview. Read it. Cesc’s comments have been twisted beyond recognition:

    http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.as.com%2Ffutbol%2Farticulo%2Fcesc-estar-mejores-historia-hay%2Fdasftb%2F20090623dasdasftb_19%2FTes&sl=es&tl=en&hl=EN&ie=UTF-8

You know the funny thing? Marca which published the original article has a new article on their site quoting the Sun which based its article on quotes from Marca. It’s amazing…..http://www.as.com/futbol/articulo/cesc-familia-entenderia-fichara-madrid/dasftb/20090625dasdasftb_10/Tes

    Hilarious really.

  228. Ole Gunner, I hope you’re right.

Even so, why give an interview on that subject?

  229. Churnalism at its funniest!

  230. OG
Unbelievable! Thanks for doing the research

  231. Tommy,

Are you saying he should stop doing interviews?

The football media are a DISGRACE. It’s really unacceptable what passes as journalism in that sphere.

But it’s the media we have, and we as fans have to really wise up.

  232. This is the explanation from Arsebloger who claims to have read the original article in Spanish which was published in AS.

  233. The same thing is going on with Adebayor. The quotes attributed to his agent on this very blog are dodgy.

I can’t find the original comments, but the site to which the comments are attributed does not have Courbis (Adebayor’s agent) saying that Adebayor wants to work with Ancelotti.

I care about truth, that’s why I tend to dig in. And I speak some of these languages and can tell if someone is twisting something or if the player himself is talking in code.

  234. What research have you done, Tommy, to justify your earlier comments about Cesc? What were the questions he was asked that lead you to interpret his responses in such a way. What context did you find, Tommy? Your questions about Cesc would lead one to conclude that you have just taken the Sun ‘statements’ at face value. Why would you do that? Are you aware of the Sun’s reputation?

  235. Look, I am sure Cesc will leave one day, perhaps even the next season. But for this season – he is not going anywhere. Let us be thankful for that and dont bother with any of this crap that passes for sports journalism these days

  236. Thannk you, BarnetStinson and thank you Arseblogger. Just about puts that one to bed I think.

Fuck off, Tommy, don’t need you anymore. Thanks for your contribution this morning.

  237. And it was easy for the hacks not to report the following in the same interview, because that doesn’t suit their agenda.

“They ask him ‘Can Cesc live without Wenger? Are your futures always linked?’. He says:

“If he leaves, I don’t have to go.”

“He then goes on to say all the stuff you’d expect him to say about Arsene. How much he respects him, what a big influence he’s had on his career etc. He also has a little pop about Ashley Cole being too keen to celebrate against Arsenal after his move to Chelsea, suggesting he should be more professional and do it at home but that’s by the by.”

  238. Ole Gunner, Yes I think they shouldnt give interviews about things they know will be misinterpreted. How could he not have learnt this lesson?

By the way, thanks for replying sensibly and not just shouting abuse like the children on here

  239. That’ll be Barney, Barney…BarneyStinson I mean…I think…

  240. Frank, nope your still not there son you were almost there but blew it, keep trying kiddo

  241. You could have worked all that out for yourself, Tommy, you lazy prick….

‘Cesc is an ungratefull little swine. Dont lie to yourselves, this has been brewing for a while. Let the little swine leave…’

That was your opening gambit, and it got worse. Who is the child? I propose that you are the one demonstrating immaturity here,’kiddo’…who the fuck says ‘kiddo’?…you from Liverpool?

  242. Tommy,

I think it’s unrealistic to expect footballers not to give interviews.

What is realistic is to expect football journalists to stop twisting the truth and publishing what they know to be false.

We can’t have a media that doesn’t report the truth. We simply can’t have it.

And I keep warning people. Don’t believe ANYTHING you read in the Daily Mail, Sun, Mirror, News of the World. Simply don’t.

  243. Barney: [making a fake phone call] Hi, leg warehouse? Yeah, my friend Tommy needs something to stand on. [pause] So, nothing for him to stand on? Ok, thanks so much. [hangs up phone]

  244. i think cescs words would have been twisted a little…

but at the end of the day world class players want to play with other world class players and they want to win trophies….

4 years is not only too long for the fans but for cesc too…he might be here next year…but if we dont win anything next year he’ll be off..why would he stay when he can go play for barca or real

as for adebayor, ole…i dont agree..it isnt the same…ade came out on national television this time last year, spoke in english and said he was staying….then two minutes later did another interveiw and said he didnt know we would have to wait and see…..

i dont believe a word that man says…..

    cesc i beleive…ade can go to hell….

  245. Frank, calm down kiddo, go do your homework and keep trying

  246. JonJon, If there goin to do an interview why not make it official with someone they trust? It just doesnt make sense, surely there not that stupid

  247. Why do you think they have only been twisted a ‘little’, JonJon. Why not a lot? Or a medium amount? Do you not think that the questions and context are relevant? If you don’t put the questions in and you publish the responses out of order but in a continuous string, it is possible to convey any meaning you so choose. You do know that, don’t you? Add to that that the reader will interpret the jumbled up responses in anyway he chooses and all you end up with is a view of the readers state of mind regarding the subject in question.

Therefore all you have said is ‘don’t know what Cesc said but I will extract from it what I need to support my case’. Which in your case is that the club hasn’t won trophies for four years and you are not happy with that, and you want Ade gone. Which is what you always say. So thanks for that.

  248. I would imagine that Cesc gives Arsenal supporters more credit when it comes to interpreting press and media interviews, Tommy. You have let him down a little, haven’t you?

  249. Is Tommy Tank the same as Spike, or in some way related to Spike? Spike says “fella” all the time, and Tommy Tank says “kiddo.”

  250. JonJon,

It’s not down to your agreement. It’s just a fact.

I have discovered the problem. The original sport.co.uk article on which this is all now based said its source was calciomercato.com. Instead the source was calciomercato.it
    Here’s the article: http://www.calciomercato.it/news/51605/STEPHANE-COURBIS-SU-EMMANUEL-ADEBAYOR.html

And contrary to what sport.co.uk reported, Courbis actually said; Che il giocatore piaccia ad Ancelotti è un dato di fatto, visto che lo scorso anno lo ha cercato per il suo Milan, tuttavia il Chelsea non ci ha contattati”

Translation: That Ancelotti likes the player is a matter of fact, seeing that he wanted him for Milan last year. However, Chelsea has not contacted us.

So you’re wrong. The media is in Adebayor’s case completely spreading falsehood about the player as usual.

  251. frank…

i dont know what cesc has said and i dont care because it happens with him every week….

something always gets published about him in spanish and then he denies it… same ol same ol…but if he goes i wouldnt blame him…

the fact the club hasnt won anything WILL be a big factor why he leaves…. do you honsetly think all those seasons Real et al were chasing Vieira and Henry they would of stayed if we went 4-5 years trophyless… No…they would of gone…it was the trophies that kept them….

Tommy…you would of thought players would of learned by now who to trust and who to speak to…but thats football…its all about publicity/sponsers etc….they need to do it…its just one of those things..

  252. ole….im not wrong mate

adebayor made his bed last year…he contradicted himself and shown the world what hes about….

what ever the media write about him this year is up to them…but at the end of the day ade used the media to his advantage last year….

and now hes paying for it…

  253. If Fabregas leaves, it will be because of the poor quality support.

  254. JonJon
it looks like you are riding the Cesc story to state your own views – the club has not won a cup in 4 years…

    sorry, same ol same ol

  255. So what you are saying, JonJon, is that the club haven’t won a trophy for four seasons and you are not happy about that, and you don’t like Ade.

Thought you told us that earlier…again.

  256. JonJon,

Utter bollocks pal. Whatever he used the media for, it is reprehensible for them to deliberately publish wrong information about him.

And there’s something seriously wrong with you if that does not bother you.

  257. So Cesc is unhappy not to have a cupboard full of winners medals?

I imagine the same is true of most proffessionl sportsmen in his position. Where’s the story?

  258. JonJon, what did Ade do that was so bad?

  259. no

what im saying is i dont care what cesc has supposed to have said because he’ll probably come out and deny it anyway and be with us next season…

but..if he does leave i wouldnt blame him…

  260. JonJon,
In this day and age, footballers do not have much loyalty. If more money is offered, they will leave.
The lesser Ronaldo’s flirtation with RM was blatant and carried out over the whole of last summer and Jan. Yet, I have not heard so much abuse from ManU fans last season and he went on to help win them a couple of trophies.

Ade is an arsenal player till the time he leaves us,. Till that time, booing or carrying out spiteful blog attacks on him can do no good to him or the club.

  261. how do you know its bollox and wrong ole???

it wasnt bollox last year was it????

  262. JonJon/Tommy have you read Arseblog this morning? He’s done a very good critique of what was actually said.

Then read LG for a completely hysterical overreaction!

  263. Agree with Daokta.

I don’t like the way Arseblog has done a detailed critique of this flimsy Cesc story, but instantly buys any story about Ade wanting to leave.

If they’re at the club then we should support them.

  264. “the fact the club hasnt won anything WILL be a big factor why he leaves…. do you honsetly think all those seasons Real et al were chasing Vieira and Henry they would of stayed if we went 4-5 years trophyless… No…they would of gone…it was the trophies that kept them….”

i think the statement you made above is not as black and white as you paint it

Those players careers were not really going anywhere and it was arsene who rescued their careers from the oblivion and gave them a chance here – so first and foremost the owed a debt to wenger and repaid it by being loyal. the trophies they won for the club were a kind of pay back and when they left they had most of our blessing. same with kanu, overmars, petit.

cesc, clichy, bentdner etc owe him for a different reason – given them a chance as youngsters

of course they wont be happy not to win trophies but i imagine they stay cause they are loyal to wenger and wanna pay that loyalty back by winning trophies. i doubt they are here for the trophies alone.

  265. JonJon,

You’re not a bit slow are you? I just published the comments from Courbis which have been deliberately twisted from “Ancellotti likes Adebayor” to “Adebayor wants to work with Ancelotti”.

That’s just pure reprehensible shit. Why doesn’t that bother you?

  266. doakta

you wont here much abuse from utd fans because ronaldo won them trophies and gave them years of magic… alot like henry did for us….

adebayors done nothing of the sort so theres a difference matey…

do you remember adebayor headbutting nikki??? what good did that do the club….

do you remeber ade doing an interview talking about the fans….what good did that do the club???

do you remeber ade doing interveiws last year saying he was staying, but then going???? what good did that do the club???

do you remember ades payrise after whoring himself around europe and then having a lazy season…going missing in all the big games???

ade creates all the negative vibes around himself all by himself therefor i have no symapthy whatsoever…

but you lot keep defending him…he’ll just keep having your pants down time and again…

  267. New post.

  268. ole

your using the media to argue the case against the media????? wtf

how do you know courbis comments arent twisted?????

nah mate not slow…just not that stupid…

i dont care what the media say…but ive heard ade talk shite form his own gob….therefore no i dont give a toss whats wrote about him because for all i know he could of started it….

  269. JonJon
I defend him because he is an arsenal player – and I believe if he leaves, Arsenal will be weakened for one more season until his replacement settles in.

Is Ade the person I like best in Arsenal – NO

Do I want him to leave – NO

  270. So what you are really saying is that you don’t like Ade then, JonJon? Interesting. Thanks, I am beginning to get there, bear with me.

  271. Tommy:
“Even so, why give an interview on that subject?”

Tommy, that’s easy to answer…because simple thick fuckers like you will always react to it!!!

  272. btw frank i said lets boo cesc not becos i agree but i am pointing out that when people dont like a player e.g adebayor they do stupid things and say stupid things about them but in the case of cesc everyone is bending over to defend him i dont agree with booing players even if i think they are crap but just highlighting the pervasive stupidness of a lot of football fans and the unreasoning daftness of our fans in particular they say let adebayor go and turn around next minute to blame wenger for letting experience go.

  273. “I’m not sure how many times I need to talk directly about my commitment to Arsenal as I continue to say the same thing over and over again, but it appears that every time I have spoken to the Spanish media recently, my words have bounced back to England, leaving question marks about my future.

“So, for anyone who is unclear or may have misunderstood what my position is, let me make myself absolutely crystal clear. I am wholeheartedly committed to Arsenal and my future lies with this great club.”

    Cesc Fabregas, 25/06/2009.

  274. “We lost Hleb and Flamini last summer and we have had to rebuild…..But we have done that now and the future looks bright. We don’t want to have to rebuild again, so I want to keep all the players together for next season. I don’t want to lose anyone.

“I want to add to the squad and have identified one or two targets. But identifying players and buying them are two different things.

    Arsene Wenger, 23/06/2009

  275. F*ck the media.
