All Quiet On The Transfer Front, Gibbs And Top 50 Players

When the politician is on the hustings at election time, they rouse their audience with fiery rhetoric until election day. Thereafter, they subdue their words, lowering expectations during terms in office until election time looms on the horizon and they raise the temperature once more.

For the erstwhile football hack, the temperature has been raised too soon. England Under-21s continue their charge through tournament land whilst the Confederations Cup barely registers on the attention scale in the back pages. Players are on holiday, likewise the managers. The summer’s major activity has already taken place, away from these shores, Madrid’s spending spree on Kaka and Ronaldo occurring in a relatively short space of time. The boom has gone temporarily bust. Some light relief with the Carlos Tevez saga and David Villa’s flirtations with Madrid and Barcelona, combined with United’s inability to blow their £80m windfall in one swoop leaves it all quiet in transfer land.

Not even Arsenal reaching the upper echelons of the seven figure transfer fee can provoke some movement so we are left with a quiet Sunday where even the attempts at stirring activity are tired. News of the World prodding for a £50m bid by Chelsea for Fernando Torres is met with a lame £25m bid for Adebayor by Star on Sunday hacks. They are desperate, so desperate that they cannot even be bothered to pull out their European Football Handbooks and plump for an obscure Moldovan defensive midfielder to nominate as the next big thing. Come on chaps, give us something to laugh about.

Kieran Gibbs is apparently to be offered a new contract. Gibbs has been praised widely for his performances for the young England team, including observations yesterday by Stuart Pearce that he has done enough to merit serious consideration for the England squad for next year’s World Cup, should they qualify. Little doubt that Gibbs has come on leaps and bounds but with Armand Traore returning following his loan spell at Portsmouth, you wonder what Arsene’s intentions for Gibbs will be.

Does he consider that a similar season for the youngster would be equally beneficial or will Gibbs be remaining at The Emirates to continue his learning. He would presumably be a straight pick for both domestic cup competitions, as well as allowing Arsene the option to rest Clichy both domestically and in the Champions League. Personally, I would rather he stayed not simply for those reasons but to put pressure on Clichy for his starting spot. Not that I think Gibbs is ready to claim it just yet but knowing that there is a very capable deputy waiting can do the Frenchman no harm at all.

Emmanuel Eboue does not know anything about a proposed move to Paris St Germain which, with all due respect to the Parisians, is not really in keeping with the possible transfer to Juventus, AC Milan or Internazionale that his Mr20% was so keen to big up in recent days. Eboue probably has a little MP3 player in his pocket for his observations on his future:

My ambition is to stay and play but because of a lack of first-team play, I’m not happy. I want to play.

These words are remarkably similar to those he uttered not more than a week ago. In the modern age, footballers seem to understand that the squad system means that everyone is rested and rotated at some point. Well, everyone else is for when discussing their own situations, every player believes he should play every game. With the possible exception of goalkeepers, this is not going to happen anymore. With the added mobility of the workforce, David O’Leary’s record of 722 appearances is not likely to ever be seriously challenged.

The Times meanwhile has put together a list of the fifty greatest Arsenal players. Hardly surprising that some are unimpressed by the content, such a compilation is always going to provoke arguments as to inclusions and omissions. Personally, I cannot agree with the exclusion of Ray Kennedy nor Pat Jennings. I would put them both ahead of Emmanuel Petit and have rated Martin Keown higher than Kenny Sansom, Paul Merson, Sol Campbell and Steve Bould, with no disrespect to any of those men. Now if they really wanted to be controversial, the inclusion of Gus Caesar may well have ticked that box…

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Almost 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Also ran

  2. It’s not really surprising that Eboue wants more time on the pitch. He’s being honest, and that’s also good. He’s one of those in-between players – not quite consistent enough to be a regular starter at Arsenal, yet in most other teams might be a star, and perhaps a team favourite too.

I hope he stays, and I think he will. I like him.

  3. With Clichy 1st choice & the emergence of Gibbs, I think that Armand Traore will be the forgotten man for many. Although its not a bad problem to have all three battling to shine in the first team this coming season.

ZP spot on with Eboue, I hope he stays aswell.

  4. Remember that Traore is younger than Gibbs. Before the start of last season, Clichy said that Traore was pushing him hard for the place at left back. Gibbs doing well does not mean that Traore will do badly.

  5. I doubt that Gibbs will go on a season-long loan. With him and Traore back at Arsenal, Wenger will be able to choose which is the preferred back-up for Clichy. If that should turn out to be Traore, perhaps Gibbs will go on loan in January. Traore mainly played as a left winger at Portsmouth, so there might well be room for both of them for the whole season.

  6. Traore could move forward into midfield. Him and Gibbs on one side would be devastating going forward. A right backs nightmare.

Its funny that we are trying to find room for players, when there is a fallacy that our squad is to small around the Grove.

I am again looking forward to the Carlin Cup. I would like to see 4 or 5 of the under 18 team in the Carlin Cup. Hopefully Hull away. Nice and Early, that would be good to see.

My preference is, Jack, Thomas, Coquelin, Frimpong, Watt, and Sunu. There are others, but, these are the lads I would like to see in the Carlin cup squad.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS.

  7. Not much in it age wise,
    AT D.O.B 8/10/1989
    KG D.O.B 26/9/1989

I wasn’t saying Traore will do badly, just that he may of fallen off peoples radar since the Carling cup run two seasons ago.

I think it’s great to have three talented left backs all fighting for one spot. I hope that they can all get decent game time.
One thing for sure, our options on the left side of the pitch are growing stronger and stronger.

    COYG.

  8. We should keep Eboue. He is the best back-up RB in the world and is versatile. He is also very direct when attacking, something Arsenal are not, and can put in a killer cross.

  9. Well, if Eboue, or any player wants to leave, then let them… We would need cover for the RB slot though. Maybe Gavin Hoyte or Coquelin??? Although Coq is probably too young and fr me, his best position is the holding DM role… He will be an effin excellent player for us, IMO.

  10. He didn’t say he wanted to leave. He said he wanted to play more games for us. Good. I like that attitude.

  11. Good video of the Denilson and Hulk Brazilian charity benefit match here from last week.

Denilson (15) in his Arsenal shirt as ever seemed to be literally everywhere on the pitch !!

Also keep an eye out for a very “athletic” looking ref in red.

  12. Nice one jbh. Does anyone on board speak Portuguese to decode?

  13. jbh

Watch Brazil tonight and tell me who is the holding midfielder Denilson or Gilberto?I rest my case M”lud

  14. Why no George Eastham in the Times list of 50 Greatest Arsenal players? A truly brilliant creator of chances and beautiful passer of the ball, he was the Liam Brady of his day. It must also not be forgotten, not least by the current generation of footballers, that without Eastham and his court case, people like Ronaldo would still be on £20 per week!!!!!!

  15. Denilson is the real deal!!
Who ever thinks he is crap must really be down on a few brain cells!

  16. You have to laugh, this clamour for a holding midfielder. It appears to me, that we have 5 candidates, all with varying degrees of suitability. Song and Denilson the most suitable, with Ramsey the unlikeliest because of his age:

    – Denilson
    – Song
    – Diaby
    – Ramsey
    – Nasri

Why are all the transfer targets being touted, such as Hitlesperger, Melo etc, a better bet than any of the players above ?

  17. Denilson and Song have both grown into the DM role. Nasri can do a job there, too. And maybe Diaby’s extra fitness training might help him – he has the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck but rarely does so. Very frustrating.
Of the DM’s we’ve been linked with, I have to say I would love to see Melo in an Arsenal shirt. He is very strong in the tackle and his distribution is excellent.
He would add real quality to our midfield.

  18. I’d be happy to leave that question to AW. At the beginning of last season Gilberto asked AW if he’d be back as no. 1 with Flamini going. The answer was no guarantee, and that Denilson would start as no 1. As great a player as Gilberto was/is he is in the twilight of his career, AW wants an all energy player that will figure all over the pitch and dominate re winning the ball. As a result AW let Gilberto go to Greece (he obviously needed first team football to maintain his position in the Brazil squad).

In this issue you can’t argue that AW got it wrong over Denilson as he makes more successful tackles and intercepts than any other PL player and was no. 2 in the CL. On top of that he rarely loses possession, has the confidence of his team mates to always take the ball in the cauldron of the midfield and wins more fouls than any other Arsenal player (and 5th in the PL just behind Ronaldo last season). His goals and assists are really a bonus but again he did better than all other PL Def midfielders and even better than Alonso who many said should have been bought. This despite that fact that he rarely takes the free kicks or corners.

Re Brazil squad, Denilson will make it in time. But you need to realise that they play a different game to Arsenal so the job description is not quite the same.

  19. – Denilson
    – Song
    – Diaby
    – Ramsey
    – Nasri

Why are all the transfer targets being touted, such as Hitlesperger, Melo etc, a better bet than any of the players above ?
    —————————-
    Hi Muppet.

None of those players natural position is a defensive midfielder. It’s a specialist position – and Fabregas has been restricted without Flamini or Gilberto this year

  20. PAKISTAN WIN BY EIGHT WICKETS WITH EIGHT BALLS REMAINING! Pakistan 139-2 (Afridi 54, Malik 24) Pakistan have done it! A memorable victory is sealed when Malinga’s yorker spears off the pads of Afridi – it had to be him – and away for a leg-bye. The entire team are on the field and down on all fours, thanking Allah, and not even the meanest spirit would be begrudge them this win. Naked talent has won out, just as it did in 1992. Then, as now, Pakistan were on the brink of elimination; then, as now, they only really hit their stride for three or four games; but then, as now, they played some electric cricket when it mattered. When they are at their best they have the force of a rising tide, and Sri Lanka could not contain it today.

Pakistan’s star was the inevitable Shahid Afridi, who has lorded over the tournament with bat, ball and personality every bit as much Diego Maradona did in a different sport in 1986. This will be remembered as Afridi’s tournament. Congratulations to him, to Pakistan – and to Sri Lanka, who have taken defeat with the dignity you would expect of a Kumar Sangakkara side. A couple of weeks ago, when Pakistan lost to England, Younis Khan said that Twenty20 was a bit of fun. It has been a helluva lot of fun, and so much else besides. Thanks for all your emails, both today and during this wonderful tournament. See you in 18 days’ time for some piddling Test series.

I’ll leave the final word to Gary Naylor: “Pakistan? Turmoil in its national politics, turmoil in its cricket politics; no chance to prepare properly, no players in the IPL; a captain who didn’t seem to care early in the tournament, no domestic cricket structure worthy of the name. If they didn’t have talent, they’d have nothing. Of course, they do have talent, and so – sod Moneyball – they have everything.”

  21. You are on the wrong blog, Arslan. Most of us hate cricket, and this a football blog, an Arsenal one. Personally I couldn’t give a flying fuck who won the cricket.

  22. i would also like to see melo because denilson is not as good position wise as melo and he will give us more strength and a spine.

denilson or song to come in for melo would be great strength in depth in that position.

  23. It seems to me that there is a lot of opinion on this subject, but it is quite difficult to pin down why we are supposedly lacking in this area. The original criticisms centered around Denilson and Song were quite clear. In the case of Denilson, he was too lighweight and positionally naive. Quite often he would venture forward, leaving us vulnerable at the back, and appeared to nullify the strengths of Cesc, as he would have to track back to cover the spaces left by Denilson.

In the case of Song, his problem was that he was too lacksidasical. Acknowledged that he was not bad in his odd stint at centre back, but certainly not viewed as the next Gilberto.

In spite of these criticisms, Denilson has proved in a lot of matches that he has a great engine and statistically is one of the best DMs in the country. Song too, has looked good, particularly in the physical challenge.

So, what are the doomers complaining about ? A lot of people were getting excited about Melo because he draws a lot of yellow and red cards. But is that really impressive ? You might be conceding a lot of free kicks in dangerous territory. Aggression ? Do we need that ? Putting the foot in seems to excite a lot of people. Ok, so are we really saying that if somebody puts their foot in, they would be preferable to one who demonstrates better distribution, better stamina, more interceptions and so on ? I’m glad this is down to Wenger to decide, because he knows which are the more pertinent attributes.

One thing one would concede, is that experience is probably important. But Denilson has had plenty. I am not joining the clamour for this defensive midfielder. I am not convinced.

  24. Oh im sorry if it annoyed you frank but since i thought theres no football debates or blogging going on cricket might do the job !

  25. Enjoy your victory, Arslan…

  26. Nasri – Attacking mid
    Ramsey – Attacking mid
    Diaby – Attacking mid.

But Song or Denilson could do the Job. But if Wenger wants to go out and buy an experienced DM then I wont complain.

Isnt it great to see some good punditry on BBC3.

  27. thanks i am

  28. one thing about melo he got 17 yellows and 3 reds at fiorentina that would be a concern in the premier league.

  29. Cannot see Melo being a replacement for Denilson, the anti AW/doomers etc. all clamoured for a DM last year because it was the obvious gap (if you believed that Denilson/Song could not step up). When they did its easier to keep complaining rather than accept they were wrong.

Melo might make sense if AW wants to play more 4231 with the 2 being any 2 of Song/Den/Melo. But you have to remember that many times he played Song/Den because there was no one else (Cesc/Diaby the offensive midfielders being injured, and Ramsay/Wilshere still a bit green for PL). Denilson and Melo are otherwise very similar, good tacklers, good positional sense, good passers of the ball and about the same size.

  30. Also this is the first year that Melo has made the Brazil squad (he’s 25). No CL experience, played previously at Almeria in Spain, now Fiorentina, so hardly with big club experience. Also he’s played at 7 clubs in the last 8 years.

I always get a bit suspicious of those employees that can’t hold down a regular job with any company for a decent period of time.

  31. Yes, 17 yellows and 3 reds would be a concern. We wouldn’t want another Patrick Vieira, would we?….oh, hang on………

  32. A player really needs a lot of skill to get a yellow card. Only the very best can get a red card.

  33. BarneyStinson

    Congrats Arslan, you from Pakistan?
Congrats to you too Ateeb. Great day for Pakistan.
I’m happy for the Pakistani gooners! Enjoy ur celebrations.

  34. just saying the premier league is a lot faster then serie a he could be dodgy for us.

geri nasri can not play defensive midfield!

  35. nah pakistani living in canada but im originally from lahore

  36. Melo just made an error that’d get Denilson booed…..

  37. Gunner From Nigeria

    Congrats ARSLAN.
I’m happy your country have something to celebrate after all the troubles.

  38. I think we need to sign a player to partner Cesc in the middle. The fact Cesc thinks that as well, shouldnt be ignored. Wenger wanted to sign someone this time last year, but for what ever reason, it never happened.

Denilson and Song (especially) have come on well, but we need a quality addition there which would benefit the team as well as Denilson and Song’s development even further.

  39. Gunner From Nigeria

These Confederations Cup matches looks like fantasy football to me. The Egyptians have been disappointing big time.

  40. Not entirely serious about the Vieira comment. It depends a lot on what the cards are for. Paddy earned a rep for retaliation (easily wound up as a youngster) and got to the point where he was shown a yellow for just about every mis-timed tackle.

  41. Gilberto just goes on and on.To hold down a regular place in this Brazillian team shows what a great player he is,No sign of Denilson in the Brazillian squad.Ha Ha

  42. I agree with Spike. Denilson and Song have done well. Can’t argue with Denilson’s stats, but to compete at the very top level I feel we need a bit more…something! Don’t know what exactly. Not necessarily experience, just quality. I’m sure Arsene knows what we need, whether it’s Melo, Cana, Hitzlsperger, Veloso or whoever.

  43. Spike,

I thought Cesc came out and flat out denied the comments attributed to him by the tabloid, “Sport”?

    Gooner Ted,

Brazil has like 10 very good central midfielders. Yet, Denilson HAS been called-up, even if not capped.

  44. Yes Cesc denied them, but people for some reason still believe these made up stories. Every summer the same. Why don’t we just believe in our players and ignore the hacks?

  45. Gunner From Nigeria

    @Spike

You are right. Denilson and Song were converted to Defensive Midfielders. Though, they have improved, They still lack some traits akin to a player in that position. We need a NATURAL defensive midfielder.

  46. Ole;

Hmmm, not sure if cesc did deny those quotes… But still, I would like us to get someone in…

  47. Im all for having faith in our players, and Im all for improving the squad as well…

  48. Why is wanting the best for the team/club wrong? And why does it mean that there is no faith in existing players?

  49. Spike,

He’s denied the interview, implying that he never uttered those comments……

    Who knows?

I don’t mind us getting someone in DM. I do hope Diaby will get over his injury problems so he gets a good run in the team. I still think he can play the role. He’s still not really gotten his chance there.

  50. ole,
diaby does not have the intelligence to play at dm he is far too attacking minded it would be almost laughable to play him in that role.

  51. “We need someone in the middle to make competition and make a difference, plus give us a new dimension

“I think that is all we need. The rest is perfect.

“Xabi would be great. He’s experienced and can score goals. I’m sure the boss is aware of that fact.”
    ———————————————-

Is it these quotes that he denied, or different ones?

  52. We have lost big players, but the boss knows what he is doing,” said Fabregas.

“The days of signing a new player aren’t finished.

  53. Gunner From Nigeria

    @Ole Gunner

Please, not Diaby. He should be a back up player.

  54. kirby,

How do I address that point other than to say those who want to convert him have a long successful track record of doing it…..and to be fair, most of the time, when he’s played there he’s played well enough, a couple of times even sensationally well.

  55. The fact that Diaby is working hard on his fitness levels and strengthening is a good sign of his deterninatioin to try and make it… Whether he makes it, is up to him and in what position, is down to AW….

  56. Spike,

I was referring to the comments attributed to him by the tabloid “Sport”. I already said that.

Question: Is Xabi Alonso a defensive midfielder? I don’t think he is one.

  57. ok ole i see what your saying but i think it would be a struggle for him to adapt to that roll now anyway.

  58. Ole;

I was asking what quotes he did deny? Coz It doesnt say where the ones I posted are from…

So, if these ones werent denied, then Cesc DOES want an addition to the midfield… Im sorry, I have no idea if Alonso could be the solution, or if indeed he is a DM, you’ll have to take that one up with Cesc!

  59. Spike,

Your quotes are from last Summer.

  60. Nah mate, they are from 01/06/2009

  61. They are recycled from last Summer.

  62. Gunner From Nigeria

The only way we can do with either Song, Denilson or Diaby would be the concept of keeping possession and, a team effort at regaining it when its lost. Thats one of the reasons Flamini was a success.

  63. So, all the Arsenal blogs, as well as Sky and whatever all decided to use em, even tho they were a year old…?

Hmmm, interesting…. maybe it was a conspiracy then?

  64. Spike,

I can’t count the number of times stories are recycled and Arsenal blogs recycle them too. It’s mass stupidity not conspiracy….

Come on, I’m sure you’ve seen it before.

  65. If Alonso is a defensive midfielder then Cesc is.

  66. Oh jeeez, believe what you want to… Anything you dont agree with, just say it aint true… I am sure Arsblog, Arsenal mania et al would’ve seen thru the fact that the quotes were bullshite, but nope, they must be all stoopid…

  67. If cesc is a DM, then we need an attack minded partner for him!

  68. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

    cesc’c recent comments

We are accustomed to playing alongside the likes of Patrick Vieira, Flamini and Gilberto Silva. Last season we were weak in this position which is so important, especially for teams like us. When we attack, it is vital to know someone is behind you to win the ball back.

the bit he denied was that he would consider barca if pep called him

  69. “He is my friend and apart from that he is a great passer of the ball, he works hard defensively, he’s experienced and he is only 26″, Fabregas said of the man who recently saw a transfer to Juventus fall through.

“For me he would be perfect. I’d love it.”
    ——————————————————-
These ones ARE from last August…

  70. Spike,

I read those exact quotes a year ago. maybe Cesc has just not changed his mind, AND his way of arranging words since then. :D

  71. Since before time began, we have heard supporters crying out for a defensive midfield player to partner Cesc. I struggle to imagine that Denilson and Song will be sitting on the bench after their improvements.

Song will not play ahead of Gallas and Toure and if Arsene was to spend on, for example Melo (even though he wants to stay in Italy) then that would leave Denilson on the sidelines.

I think it would make more sense if Arsene was to buy another midfielder at the same stage as Denilson and Song.

  72. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

Alonso is a DM that is his true position, he also doubles as a deep lying plamaker cos he has the ability to pick passes. if u watched him in his Soceidad days then u wld understand this. Benitez has always fancied playing 2DM even when he was at valencia

    Cesc isnt a DM.

  73. Gunner From Nigeria

Alonso rarely plays in defensive midfield alone. He always plays in a team that goes with two DM so, i don’t know how he would fare if he does it all by himself.

  74. ML;

Sorry fella, can’t agree with that… The DM is an area that has lost 3 players in a year and a bit, we have 2 young players who are still learning that role, although they have improved, I still maintain an experienced quality signing in that position, will improve the squad, our chances of winning things and also imrove Denilson and Song in the long run..

Last summer, I was amazed when we didnt sign a player to replace either Flamini, Gilberto and Diarra…

  75. Ok, Spike it doesn’t matter. Let’s say they’re current quotes.

Is Xabi Alonso a defensive midfielder?

  76. You already asked me that dude! I think he can play the role, whether he is the right player for the team, is another question tho… But it aint one I have to make, thankfully…

  77. Let me get you right…Spike.

Have you ever seen him play defensive midfield?

  78. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

GFN Alonso wld have been a great foil for cesc IMO. probably better than flamini. what we suffered most from at the start of the season was to get that midfield balance. i for one i dont believe in the tough tackling DM hype. a player like Alonso would have brought the best out of Cesc cos he has a lot of ability and experience. The two best anchor midfielders all season (anchormen=sitting in front of the back 4) were carrick and alonso IMO

  79. Many of the quotes attributed to Cesc are nonsense, or highly “spun” from previous years. Best way to resolve it is to look at his most recent ATV online interview done late in the season in which he spoke about the upcoming Confed cup in Sth Africa he was very complementary about Denilson even thought he’d be playing for Brazil (which he isn’t this time – although he has been in the senior squad previously).

Don’t believe the media. Unless you have word for word the question and the answer then you cannot trust what they write. Better to just watch the interview.

  80. Ole

He has played as a DM, fella, in Spain and for Liverpool. Altho as mentioned above, they play a different system to us… Im not sure why you keep bangin on about this tho, when Ive said, I aint sure he is the right player for us…?

  81. xabi is a DM and a very good one at that,

the only reason he doesnt get recognised as a DM is because of his technical abilities, alonso is a very techincal DM.

the thing with alonso is that his reading of the game means that he can control the midfield without having to play like cana or essien, his positional play and his football brain means he doesnt have to go storming into tackles and ‘sweeping up’ in the midfield, he knows whats going to happen before it happens.

his passing ability is on a par with cesc and if we get a midfield with cesc and alonso, possession football would return, wengerball would return, no more safe 5 yard passes to the wings, we would have creativity and the best two footballing midfeilders in the PL.

as for people thinking alonso not being a tackler, or ‘nasty’ enough to be a DM, just ask cesc, and cesc wasnt the only player alonson put on the sidelines last year, alonso injured 3 players last year.

in short, alonson is a dirty bastard with a great footballing brain and has won things with spain and liverpool, still 26-27 with his best years ahead, i for won would welcome a cesc alonso midfield with open arms.

  82. Spike,

Can you tell me in which matches he’s played defensive midfield?

I keep banging on it because Franchise is a fraud. He never played DM in Spain. Alonso is and has always been a playmaker.

  83. Oh gawd… is that how it is then? If you aint happy with a quote, or opinion, then it is made up? I am more than familiar with the way the Spanish press load questions to get the headlines and answers they want… Like the recent pep quotes bullshite. However, the fact that these quotes were widely circulated and NOT refuted, kinda implies they are accurate. And if you read em, apart from the Alonso reference, they are hardly contraversial and basically are quite run of the mill and predictable given the players that left last summer…

  84. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

Alonso played DM in Spains first two games at confed cup. B4 Senna broke into the side pre world cup 06 Alonso had that position on lock

  85. Ole;

Lets flog this dead horse some more shall we??? Its effin dull fella…. You telling me he cant play that role? Maybe you think as he does not have the qualities of Flamini he cannot do that role? I think as a holding DM, he can do it, but as I have said, and this will be the 3rd time now, I aoint sure he is right for us, regardless of what the fake cesc quotes say!

    Move on…

  86. Eric,

If Xabi Alonso is a DM, then Almunia is a full-back.

  87. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

Midfielder Xabi Alonso is a true Kop favourite with a reputation as one of the best passers in the game.

The Spain international was among the first players to join the Rafalution with a £10.5million move from Real Sociedad in August 2004.

He is the son of former Barcelona star Miguel Angel ‘Periko’ Alonso and brother of Tenerife midfielder Mikel. Both boys came through the ranks at Sociedad, with Xabi making his senior breakthrough in a Copa del Rey match versus Logrones in December 1999.

From there, he was loaned to Spanish minnows SD Eibar, only to be called back when Anfield legend John Toshack took the reins at Estadio Anoeta.

Alonso swiftly developed into a defensive midfielder with an eye for a pass few of his contemporaries could spot.

It came as no surprise when, in April 2003 and aged just 21, he earned his first Spain cap against Ecuador. A year later he travelled to the European Championships in Holland and Belgium, though featured in just one of his country’s three group games……………

    from his liverpool profile

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/alonso/

  88. Well Carrick, Alonso, Mascherano, Mikel, and the others don’t tackle or intercept passes as well as Denilson (basicly win the ball) and thats what AW pays him to do. If you want two playmaking central midfielders then thats your opinion, but thats not what AW does.

Denilson since he was 11 yrs old has played as a ‘volante’ classic Brazilian defensive midfielder (though the Brazilians expect the DM to have top passing skills as well). If you don’t like him, get over it, I’m sure he’ll be around for a long time. Seem to remember that many didn’t understand what Gilberto and Flamini did for the team as well.

  89. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

almunia is a full back then

  90. Franchise,

Yeah, the same way Alonso played DM for Benitez at Sociedad according to you. Only problem with that: Benitez never coached Sociedad.

Xabi Alonso is and has always been a playmaker.

  91. jbh;

Hmmm, see this is the real issue isnt it…? Where have I said anywhere i dont like Denilson? Show me please? That aint the issue, apart from in your head… Shame that, kinda spoils any chance of a discussion or debate, IMO

  92. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

denilson is a good player but shouldnt be playing 50 games a season for us yet. we can do better. there are cob webs in our trophy cabinet that need to be taken out

  93. Friend Cheese aka Franchise

ole u are talking thrash i never said benitez was at soceidad. wanna argue use facts

  94. I know there are a few Gooners who don’t like Denilson or Song, and they probably won’t ever… However, I think they have the POTENTIAL to be great players for us and signing a more experienced player can only help them reach their potential, as well as aid the team…

    Just my opinion though.

  95. Oh and the earth is as flat as a pancake and sun goes to sleep every night….

  96. Spike
I said “if you don’t like him, get over it….”
So if you do like him, thats fine too. Is English your first language? The word “if” leaves it open one way or the other.

  97. i fully understand you spike,

what you appear to be saying is we lost 3 midfielders in the space of 6 months and although song and denilson have done well we need another to make up the numbers for the good of the team

im like you, im all for the development of players but im also for the signing of quality ones whether it be alonso or not.

and jbh, wenger tried to buy alonso last year so i doubt it would of been cesc and denilson last year with alonso and song as backup, it would have been cesc and alonso so it would appear to be AW’s choice too at that time.

  98. sorry Franchise I misread your earlier comment.

  99. jbh;

Erm, nah the fact you brought it up kinda shows your hand fella. You assumed I dont rate him, Ive seen the rabid way any negativity, percei ved or real is jumped on by certain posters…

Being condescending and patronising just makes you look like a twat..

  100. Eric;

Thats exactly it fella. Im sure before we signed Arshy, some Gooners would’ve said we dont need him as we have Vela, nasri, Theo, etc and signing him only blocks the development and playing time of young players. Where, for me, it improved the squad and can only be a positive for those younger players too

  101. I am unaware of anyone against improving the squad.

  102. Is it very unpleasant to look like a twat?

  103. the thing with AA spike is that he will only help the likes of nasri and theo,

AA is a star and he will help the young players in more ways than one, its somone to look up to and its someone from them to learn from.

if we signed a CM with the same calibre of an AA or an alonso, denilson would learn much more.

not only that but before last season denilson wasnt a DM, he was a attacking playmaker, especially in the CC..he was amazing

with a year of the defensive side of the game under his belt signing another player who can ‘lay deep’ will allow denilson to play further up and his over all game will come on leaps and bounds. we could have a very special midfielder in denilson but 50+games for a lad of that age is too much

i dont expect a new signing to replace denilson, i expect a new signing to help him, share the burden, develop him,

thats a far cry from saying denilson is shit, he isnt shit, but the midfeild needs more numbers.

  104. Alonso is not the ball-winning DM that you guys say we need. I love him as person, and admire him as a player. He’d be an addition to Arsenal. But he’s not a holding midfielder. He’s not a ball winner.

  105. Poliz;

Yes, cant be much fun can it!?!

    Ole;

True, Alonso is a quality player, whether he is precisely what we need, is something that will be up for debate unless he actually joined the club. And I doubt he will now.

  106. no not really ole, i agree hes not a ball winner but i dont think we need a person in the midfeild who is a ball winner by trade alone

some of the best football ive ever seen us play is when we had edu and vieira in the middle,

neither were regarded as DM’s neither were just ball winners but the football was amazing.

i would like to see that style again and i feel alonso would be a perfect partner for cesc.

they can both play football, they can both keep possession and with AA and rosicky to play with our midfeild would be the best in the world

to me you win a game of football when you control the midfeild, cesc and alonso would control it without having to declare a war.

and to be fair both arent exactly angels, like i said alonso injured 3 players last season.

two very gritty CMs who can play wengerball. thats what id like to see

  107. Eric,

That’s one thing I always agreed with you about; I prefer if we had a Vieira-Petit. Or the last few months of Flamini-Fabregas.

No holding midfielders. Just 2 midfielders who share creating and defending.

  108. thats true spike, the alonso deal is probably a far cry.

but im sure wenger will find someone, thats if TV isnt the answer, theres rumours about him playing the midfeild role, sort of like what wenger did with petit,

im so excited for the new season, i feel last seasons expliots and heartbreak will not go to waste, the team will be stronger and ready next season,

  109. Would that be okay with you, Eric?

    Thomas Vermaelen in holding midfield?

  110. ole we are signing from the same hym sheet i see.

yes the petit vieira partnership was amazing, and the cesc flamini one was developing into a world class one,

id like to see that again, we are a footballing side, a possession side that defends best when we attack, i would love to see two footballers in the middle

no roles, none of this you do this and i’ll do that,

two players who can do both and control the midfield with beautiful football, thats whats made us the best team in the world to watch,

  111. ole,

yes it would be ok with me if thats what wengers planning, it worked with petit.

and it would mean we keeping both kolo and willy g,

    win win stiuation for me.

but we’ll see what wenger does, thats why im looking forawrd to the new season so much, i just dont know what to expect, its killing me.

  112. Does anyone know how much difference this poast season will make as far as Song and Denilson?

I have read many comments saying that they are not good enough but you can see that they have improved. So we are saying that they have started to play much better all within one season. Please tell me, do players stop getting better after one season? if not isnt it safe to say that they will continue to grow?

Kirby, what exactly is your proof that Denilson is suspect positionally?

  113. I know JonJon I’ve been telling you that for months. Man poo don’t have a holding midfielder so one doesnt need one to win trophies

  114. Brazil looked dangerous against Italy

  115. Eric,

Why would you prefer Tv to Song, Diaby or Denilson?

  116. i wouldnt really say i’d prefer him to them ole,

i just think its another option, if thats what Aw’s trying to do then so be it,

abit more ammo to chose from, but we’ll see what happens.

    interesting though.

do you feel he’s come to the club to play midfeild ole, or do you feel hes going to be a CB?

  117. Paul N,

Italy looked like West Brom with an average age of 5 years more.

Chiellini was poor. Pirlo passed but Toni & Rossi were pretty useless. Camoranesi ran but into dead alleys. It was embarassing.

Lippi made a mistake to talk them up before the tournament. He was angry that Spain were getting all the plaudits. He wanted to remind us all that Italy are the World Champions! No, Signor Lippi. No.

  118. I think he’ll play centre back and will be on the bench until January.

  119. interesting ole,

do you think he’s cover for kolo then? and then replace gallas at the end of next season?

  120. Something like that….

He’s about the same age as Clichy & Sagna…I think he’s replacement for Senderos.

Honestly, I don’t see Wenger selling Gallas or Toure, unless one of them wants to leave. Even then I think he’ll tell them to wait till next season. This next season is that important.

I think TV’s a long-term buy, even with the big money move.

  121. Gooner Ted

U might laugh that Denilson is not ahead of Gilberto yet, just check your record books mate to see what age Gilberto made into the Brazil squad… also if we didnt have a manager like Wenger who is willing to give the youth a chance, a chance to those players like Clichy, Cesc, Vela etc…. we will be like all the other teams, or an ageing Milan with a bunch of over 30′s players, who demand very very high wages and lack desire and commitment.

Those say we should have kept Vieira, Pires, Henry etc for more years… Wenger letting them go gave the younger promising players a chance to shine… If Vieira didnt go Cesc wouldnt be where he is today.

  122. It is break time but Brasil and the USA both had great matches in the Confederations Cup. Crazy stuff indeed..Bobby Gee Check out my blog

  123. I agree Ole, Italy was crap!

Is it me or did many Arsenal fans complain about Gilberto also? hypocrite’s. I could bet GT was on of those.
