Congratulations to the Youth’s on their victory at Anfield, fitting that Steve Bould should once more win silverware at Anfield. The hard work that has been put in not just this season but in those previously, in building an Academy that can produce players to go on to the first team is paying dividends. It is a good sign for the club that the team has won, the taste of success will hopefully make those players hungry for more as they progress through the ranks.
In itself, winning the FA Youth Cup is but one marker for the Academy. More telling in the value of the work will be those that make the grade at the club. At the moment, all that can be said is that there appears to be more potential for this current batch of youngsters to achieve that aim than perhaps there has been in the past. Crucially for the players, they know that if they fail to do so at Arsenal, there is a better than average chance of it happening in the game as a whole. If you look around the divisions, the number of players at other clubs who started their careers at Arsenal but were released by Arsenal seems to be higher than normal. When Wenger is castigated in the media for a lack of English players in his first XI, those elsewhere seem to be conveniently overlooked. That none of them are setting the world of fire is not his fault. David Bentley is a prime example of having unfulfilled talent. Despite no shortage of publicly stated belief in himself, he seems likely to be offloaded by Spurs this window.
The English game is not helping itself. Theo Walcott is one of the brightest young talents around yet the national team is intent on burning him out before he reaches 21 summers old. It is frankly ludicrous that he is picked for the full and Under-21 England squads, requiring him to play potentially until a week before Arsenal resume pre-season training. Every time that there is an international schedule, the usual concerns arise about player fitness and how the football calendar does little to assist the clubs and for that matter, the national teams.
This time though, the situation is simply too stupid for words. Well, not quite but seemingly intelligent men are making crass decisions. There is no logic and personally I believe the Football Association has to take action. There has to be an intervention on their part and Stuart Pearce told that he cannot have Walcott. Failing that, the player should realise that rest is required before next season. I do not hold out any hope of commonsense prevailing. It never does in football.
Walcott though turned his attention to what is required in order to challenge for the title next season:
Man United only won one game out of their matches against the top four, so it just shows how important every game is in the Premier League. The so-called littler clubs, away and at home, they are the points you have to make up. We have to do the dirty work, like we have learned from this year, and take that into next season.
That has always been the crucial aspect but it overlooks one important thing. United win their home games. For the past two seasons, their record at Old Trafford has been outstanding. This season, they dropped seven points, last season even less. By comparison, Arsenal do not stand very well and this needs to be rectified. To highlight that, United only picked up six more points on the road than Arsenal meaning that they collected twelve more at home. This has to be addressed as much as turning defeats on travels into draws and draws into victories. It is not often that a team wins the title in equal measure at home and away. Most of the time it is achieved through being outstanding in one or the other.
Elsewhere, Adebayor is staying and believes that Wenger and Cesc are as well whilst Robert Pires thinks it would be a mistake to let him go. Brede Hangeland is the subject of all speculation emanating from these shores about whom Arsene is going, sorry not going, to sign. Oh, what the hell. Nobody knows and since it is not going to happen immediately, should we be bothered? Anyway, the player got a rave review from Roy Hodgson over the weekend. Whilst Hangeland reckons he is not leaving Fulham, his manager thinks they won’t be able to stop him. Confused? You will be.
’til Tomorrow.

Nice blogg
Dont think there is any point talking about potential signings, if a player comes then we talk about them. How many hours people waste speculating… just pointless. 200 names could be mentioned this summer, all them being analysed, put into formations, see how they fit in with our other players!!! then come end of the summer, we have signed 1 player!!!

Massive congratulations to the Youth Cup squad, well done Gunners we are so proud of you.
It was so great to see them lift the trophy yesterday. If they hadn’t scheduled the match for a bleedin’ weekday, I would’ve travelled up there myself. Anfield looked empty compared to the first leg at the Grove, but the travelling Gooners made sure they were heard, and the “respect to the ninety six” flag was a nice touch of dignity to keep things in perspective.
I’m starting to worry that i’m enjoying watching them play more than the first team! Their defending is superb, always defending as a team and getting on the end of every header that comes their way. When they go forward there’s always so much options, every player in the team can contribute something creative. Winning this cup will get that winning spirit into their blood, but they’ve won it so easily that they’re going to need some fresh new challenges quickly. Next season I expect to see a lot of Wilshere, Coquelin, JET, Lansbury and Watt in the Carling Cup. Eastmond, Bartley, Ayling and Cruise need to bolster their size and strength, play more in the reserves and perhaps go out on loans.
I know Wenger must be just as excited about them as we are. One thing which defines them is that they’re not just a randomly essembled group of strangers who just happen to be good at football, they are a unit and most have grown up playing in teams together. I’d rather see them carrying on making progress like that, rather than being broken up selectively player-by-player. In that case then, it should be very interesting to see how Wenger will gradually blend them in to the first team.

Frankly, some pressure needs to be applied to Walcott to stop being quite so equivocal about playing for the under 21’s and England first team. He has just had a season where he spent almost half of it out injured. At the end of this, and despite the fact that he has made little discernible progress in the 3 1/2 years he’s been at the club, he was rewarded with a new contract. HTo my mind he ought to realise where his bread is buttered and tell Pearce that he is unavailable. What is he going to learn from playing in the U-21’s?

I agree mate with your argument that he should tell Pearce to shove it, but to say he has made little progress is going a bit far.
His experiences with the National squad have given him that extra belief and confidence for when he plays with us. He is the brightest English talent making it through right now at club level and national level. His game has stepped up considerably in the last year or so. Champs League chip against Villareal highlights what he can do. His dribble from the half way line versus Liverpool last season also…
I do believe though if they continue to abuse his talent like Pearce is trying to, he will end up like Owen. I just cannot understand how a player has been constantly picked for the National Senior squad and yet is still called to the U21.. its remarkably unbelievable and to be honest is a piss take to the player and our club.
Theo might not want to stand up against it, he loves playing football… but someone needs to look out for the boy… Wenger will be the one to give them an a good speaking to im sure.

The revelation in the youth set up is Sanchez Watt. He has pace and power and can score goals. His ability to score important goals contributed to their success in both the Youth league and the FA cup.
Watt has been playing almost unnoticed to most fans but has emerged as one of the future prospects.
Walcott should watch his back for Sanches Watt and Denilson should fear Coquelin.
Coquelin has all the attributes to be the real DM that we lack.

If Theo is playing he will be facing Finland, Germany and Spain. The group games will on 15th, 18th and 22nd June, although I am not sure of the order.
Although ill-advised from an Arsenal perspective, I think that the national side is really important to Theo and he sees progress with the U21s as a route into the full squad.
Good luck to him whatever he chooses to do. If he plays I will be supporting him all the way.

The media are a major impediment to sense in football. It was easy to castigate Arsenal for not having English players.
The real problem is that the academies of the Top 4 have gone through a very unproductive period in which they have not developed top class talent.
Who’s the last top class player to come out of Man Poo’s academy? Or Liverpool’s? The Chavs have never had a productive youth system anyway.
This was the real problem. But by picking on Arsenal they obscured the issue and did not help English football in anyway, and can have argued to have hurt by not shining light on the real problem.
The football media are a disgrace. Not exactly stop press you’d say but it really is amazing how poor they are.

TW does not need the U21’s. Capello picks him automatically for the national squad and has in the past, rated Walcott as the English player of the future. Why risk him in a tournament when he knows what the player is capable of? Capello is Pearce’s boss and should be taking him to one side to point out the risks of picking him. Either that or not include him in the full squad for two relatively straightforward WCQ’s.

Coquelin will continue to be a fans’ favourite, so long as he keeps out of the first team. If he does progress to the first team, it will only take one season of him being the best tackler in the league for the fans to get on his back, and refer to him as Francis “read my stats” Coquelin.

I disagree with you on Lansbury. Lansbury’s passing needs a lot of improvement. Watching lansbury in both legs against Pool and also the Spurs he seemed to miss too many goal scoring opportunities.
Lansbury seems a natural CM than RM. He will need to work on his long range passing and crossing.
I see Watt performing better than him and squeezing into the first team like Gibbs, unnoticed.
Watt has pace and power going forward. He can tackle and holds the ball very well. The main thing going for him is, he scores goals with both left and right feet.
Lansbury’s goal scoring ability is thin and he misses too many chances. He also don’t have the pace and power Watt has.

Very good point. Not being Flamini, or an experienced international they will say he’s not the answer.
And no amount of pointing them to clear evidence will convince them. They’ll insist they trust their lying eyes.
He’ll become nicknamed the crab, and slated for not making more through passes than Cesc.
Talking of Cesc, if this had been his first season in the team he’d have been slated as well.
That’s the kind of madness that has taken deep root at the Arsenal.
By: Ole Gunner on May 27, 2009

I don’t agree with you at all, 4TT. Henri’s pace, positioning and passing ability remind me very much of Kieran Gibbs. He has already played at right back and, arguably, there is a gap there if Bacary Sagna gets injured and Eboue is off the the ACN.
Which of Adebayor, Van Persie, Bendtner, Vela, Eduardo, Arshavin, Walcott, Simpson do you see Sanchez Watt getting ahead of next season?
By: Frank on May 27, 2009
at 10:29 am
Frank, Lansbury as a right-back seems like a bizarre option but you just might have a point. His natural position is as a central midfielder, playing box-to-box or behind the strikers like Gerrard. He’s not a defensive player nor is he a winger, but it seems he’s been put on the right side of midfield to make him more versatile to the demands of the modern game. I don’t see him as a right-back in the long-term, but maybe some time playing there would help his overall game. Gibbs has played in the center of midfield for England U20’s, and his natural position was traditionally on the left wing, so who knows. Aaron Ramsey seems like the one player Lansbury will have to face as a main competitor for places, they’re both quite similar players but Ramsey is more experienced in playing out of his comfort zone either on the wing or at right-back as well.

Lansbury at RB, very likely seeing what he’s done for Gibbs. Like Gibbs, his exposure playing at RM will definitely help at RB.
Remember, AW has played him at RB before in the CC as a sub.
I wish AW will try Watt at RM to exploit his pace, power and goal scoring abilities.

Theo missed 4-5 months of the 08/09 season due to injury so it is not surprising that he wants to play games. The England team are only playing Andorra and Kazackstan and he will not miss the pre-season as a result of playing in the U21s. ‘Burn out’ is certainly not a risk. I would think that AW is concerned about the risk of injury. On the other hand if he comes back injury free he will be a couple of steps ahead fitness wise for the pre-season.

In 4th The Target’s world, critical thinking is optional. Again, you’re right. This guy is ridiculous enough to think though Denilson came through the reserves, he’s somehow not at the level of the reserves. 4TT rates his own irrational biases over the judgement of 10-15 pros who along with Wenger assess the abilities and progress of these players.

the thing with walcott is although he has exceptional potential…. he hasnt really developed as many expected….
we bought him at 16 when he was a striker with immense talent….the money we paid….around 12 million…would suggest wonkerkid status but that has not been realised yet…
he has been with us four years and he his progressing…but at a very slow rate…he stills runs into blind allies…has an average first touch and fails to pick out a killer pass or cross….
which is quite dissapointing….
reasons for this could be because wenger choses to protect him from the nasty defenders by sticking him out on the wing…but theo isnt a winger….we didnt buy a winger when we bought him….
to realise his full potential he needs to play up top….only then can he be judged as a success or failure…

Do you recall Theo’s 6 misses against Chelsea in the 4-1 defeat? Watt would have scored 4 of them. He’s that good, scoring.
Ridiculous. I’ve got a lot of time for Sanchez Watt, but let’s get some perspective. Have you ever seen him score against a senior Chelsea team in the premier league? Have you ever seen him score a hat-trick for England against Croatia? Watt IS good at scoring, but you’ve only seen him score against U-18’s and reserve players, which is obviously a lot easier than playing in the premier league.
Also Poliziano makes a very good point. 4 years ago, we finished 4th in the premier league with the likes of Henry, Ljungberg, Hleb, Gilberto and Reyes. Walcott and Denilson had just come to us as promising players who everyone was talking about. 4 years later, they have now arrived as regular starters in the team, finished 4th in the league and are considered not good enough.

Everyone needs to really not get caught up in the hype of the youth players potential. Look to Ramsey and Wilshire, they have probably made at most 5-10 appearances this season, and barely any starts. Im for youth completely – if they are ready and good enough.
I thought Ramsey would have been ready this season personally and thought he would have pushed on but it wasn’t to be. Wenger didnt chuck him into many games this season as he didnt feel he was ready, plus we aint been playing to our maximum for most parts this season so chucking youth players in while the team aint performing well aint going to go down well.
Gibbs was seen as able to handle the pressures of top flight footy.. he shined and looks to be a real quality player. Other players like Hoyte couldnt hack it eventually… We just have to be patient, hopefully a few more are looked at by Le Boss and hopefully he sees a few which could be of use to the team/squad.

Well said, Theo is the brightest and probably the most talented English footballer around right now… his pace, dribbling, and technique is amazing. That pri** saying he still runs into blind alleys, cant cross etc… who have you been watching this season??? Walcott has single handedly been our main attacking outlet when he has played.
Is it his fault nobody is ever in the box?? If we had a fit Eduardo, Walcotts assist tally would be alot bigger. Next season he may be pushed up top, but i can almost guranetee that Wenger will use him on the wing again.. He is by far better than anyone else in the Premiership as an out and out pacey winger.

JohnN,
They haven’t been mediocre as a reserves team. They were doing much better until Hoyte, Lansbury, Randall, Simpson, Barazite, Nortdveit among others went away on loan.
They’re by far the youngest Reserves team. When they played the Spuds, the Spuds had the likes of Zokora and Bentley in the team. When they played Chelski, the Chavs had Malouda, Di Santo, Drogba, in the team.
And they finished (11th?) but before players went out on loan in January, they were competing with Aston Villa for 1st place.

Exactly. In the reserves they’ve had to come up against much older, bigger and stronger players from the premier league, and it’s been a real lesson for them because they haven’t coped even half as well as they’ve performed in the U-18’s. The reserves have only won a game once in 2009. Their next challenge is to get up to speed with that level. I have absolute confidence that they can do it, but it will take time and patience. We don’t need to hype up a youth player while attempting to bring down a senior player at the same time for the sake of comparison, they are playing at completely different levels.

As you say Theo is 20 so why does it sound like you are writing him off. Not all players can be world-class at that age like Cesc.
Thierry Henry barely got into double figures until he was 23 and he didn’t do too badly overall. Ian Wright was a plasterer until 23. These are our 2 highest ever scorers so please refrain from making comments that have no substance.

I do not think the Reserves is a good indication of the youth’s potential. As far as I can see, with half the top youths either on the bench for the first team or away on loan, AW uses the reserves as a way of training and imparting experience for the kids.
Unlike Spuds where they fielded as many of their 1st team regulars as they could do legally!!.

I actually believe playing for both the U-21 and the WC team will be good for Theo. The experience he gains will be invaluable and a big confidence booster if he does well.
He has started to bulk up and I was impressed at his growing ability to hold off his opponent and retain the ball. The old Theo would have been brushed off with ease.

One of the most interesting and rewarding jobs AW and his management team will do this off-season is decide which younger players, loanees, and reserves will begin to be seen as first-team material, and in what kind of longer term role.

Ok not so the 2nd half of the season, but if i remember rightly, the 1st 3 months when he was injury free he was absolutely amazing for us and England.

AW worries a lot about tiredness and injuries. Theo is still a young lad and already so much pressure to perform at the top, top level. AW seems to take the view that there is ready formula, players mature in their own way, they need space to do that. It has proved successful.

You just expect too much too soon, just like many of the ‘fans’ of this club. The ’supporters’ of our club are willing to sit back and watch the youngsters turn into legends without slagging them off. Its the same as any fan talks about Denilson… you will say he is alrite, but not good enough. Lets get someone else in.
Its a shame to have this attitude, because if we stick with these players and not moan at them, they will blossom quicker, and turn into better players than many of the so called big names that plastic fans beg and weap for.

I have been very impressed by Theo, and I think he will be a winger. He has started to beat players with more guile, passing and not only speed. Evra was a great learning curve too, and it will all help his development. He’s also a nice lad.

I think Wenger is impressed also how hes adapted, hence why he has stayed there since arriving. Its a voide we have had since Freddie lost his pace and Theo is covering it with flying colours. He scares the hell out of defenders with his pace and runs behind.

By: JonJon on May 27, 2009

I think that Theo is a winger. But in a way it is irrelevant because up front and in midfield AW appears to be opting for interchanging positions during the match as circumstamces and opportunities arise. So Theo will find himself in the middle and upfront during a match, as well as on either wing.

Good stuff as usual, YW.
I think the England plan will be for Theo to play through summer, get himself a nice lengthy injury when he comes back to us, so that he will be fresh enough for South Africa.
Although he has made good progress, bulked up his physical strength, it is only his pace that distinguishes him. For me, Vela is the much better footballer & long term prospect.
I think it will be at least a couple of seasons before any of this excellent youth team become anything like regulars. They were all very impressive but it is strange that of our previous FAYC winners very few made it. Pat Rice in 66? was no stand out player but it was only him & Sammy Nelson who made it with us & 4/5 years on.
There does look like something extraordinary about these boys though, so it will be interesting.
I really think that the top clubs are missing a trick by not setting up a properly competitive & regular reserve league for these boys to progress in. 33k proves there could be a market. The entertainment from the CC team & the youths has been wonderful.

Theo is set for a fantastic season as a first team and England regular starter which at 20 years of age is impressive from a developmental perspective. All the more impressive as he was held back by serious injury to his shoulders and more latterly his knee. I would say that he and his management team have plotted exactly the right course for him.
By: Frank on May 27, 2009

Agree, 20 yrs old starter for England and Arsenal is very impressive. Dont know why people like JonJon have to come along and try and say he should be delivering more. He has impressed everyone so far and will continue to, we stick with him he will be 1 of the worlds best.
By: ChrisGoona on May 27, 2009

I would say that Carlos Vela and Theo Walcott are neck and neck and if we can get them playing together we are quids in. Interestingly they were both born in March 1989.
Also although I am no England fan, we do have to be careful about adopting double standards regarding international football. We tolerate players of other nationalities being away for all sorts of competitions. The competition which might have an impact upon pre-season is the U21 European Championship and Theo has a perfect right to play in that. The full England games are almost irrelevant becuase if he was not with the full England squad he would be at the U21 training camp.
By: Frank on May 27, 2009

You put a figure of 20 goals for the season in the back of his mind, will just pile even more pressure to a 20yr old who has pressure from club and country already. Expectations are high enough already, he has managed to perform alot more consistently this season, the goals and rewards will come soon enough.
Be patient and SUPPORT

Sell the freaking first team, I say. All of them, keep 2-3 experienced players. Bring in the reserves, they’re all better. They just won the cup, why can’t they do it on the bigger stage?
Before we get excited about the players that played last night, I think there is a long waiting list, because we have many players on loan, who would be assimiliated in the first team before than.
JonJon,
How do you come up with the most ridiculously unenlightened comments?
FFS, people have been have been spoilt by a few young stars, and expect alot from the younger players. Messi, Cesc, Ronaldo are exceptions, not the general trend.

By: ChrisGoona on May 27, 2009

Actually when you think about it the manager most likely to improve the fortunes of the England team is Arsene Wenger. Theo is the first of many who will have been prepared for England stardom by him. Kieran is the second. Jack and Henri will be the third and fourth. WC2014 and WC2018 are in the bag for 3 lions supporters. All the lardarses have to do is sit and watch, scratch their bellies and think about beer and tattoos and fly-tipping.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a hero of the anti-supporters, was 20 years old (I think) in the 04-05 season. He scored 9 goals in 50 games, a goal every 5.6 games. This season, when Walcott was 20, he scored 6 goals in 27 games, a goal every 4.5 games.

HG gets bullied enough as it is on this blogg – his attempts to be intellectual are laughable and his comments he trys to put across lack any real argument or backbone behind them.
I think you described him well being an average, small circle of friends kind of guy who gets a kick out of stirring a fuss on a few bloggs to draw attention to points of which he cant argue.

Before we all go over board about the youth cup team we should remember that they have also been forming the majority of the reserve side which has been mediochre at best this season. Most have to successfully make the jump from youth to reserve football before they can hope to be considered for 1st team football
———————————–
They’re by far the youngest Reserves team. When they played the Spuds, the Spuds had the likes of Zokora and Bentley in the team. When they played Chelski, the Chavs had Malouda, Di Santo, Drogba, in the team.
——————————
In reality Arsenal does not have a “reserve” team. unlike other teams you would be hard pressed to find anyone in the senior taking part in the reserve games.
Wenger much rather send his “reserve” players on loan, because in his mind for players to develop they need more games than the reserve league allows.

decent display from the youth team last night, very good display last friday. i enjoyed watching bartlett, i like the look of him, jack obviously and sanchez. those three stood out for me last night, the thing it is important to remember is that young players are inconsistant , its in their nature. I also read today of some more defensive youngsters coming in from home and away. I suppose i will watch the game tonight, i promised myself i wouldnt as i didnt think i could face it but we will see. I like to have a team to support when watching a game, no problem with that then

Just supposing, and this is an outside possibility, that some industrious and inventive soul has managed to synthesise a drug which when administered causes bizarre behaviour in the recipient. Perhaps also this individual has managed to administer this ‘elixir’ to the players of Manchester United and Barcelona, this afternoon.
And just supposing that the effect of the drug was initiated by a whistle. And so when the kick off whistle sounds, all of the players capture the referee and linesmen and all UEFA officials in the ground, strip them naked, ram peacock feathers up their arses…each and every one of them…and chase them round the ground for 90 minutes.
Do you reckon if that happened the competition would be declared null and void and neither team would win? OR that the two clubs in third and fourth position to stage an alternative final at a later date.
Could happen couldn’t it? Not beyond the bounds of possibility?

Hello people… Its been quite a while to post but I have been making effort to read the excellent blogs by YW as well as the responses as per usual.
Guess the transfer window will soon open.
Not expecting many buys and any buy should be in addition wot what we have and no one should be sold please!
I will continue to say it that a team needs understanding to function well long term and whatever has been archieved in that area this season should not be thrown away like what happened when Hleb (most missed… see those 0-0 draws) and flamini left.
Although if Rosicky and Eduardo had been available this season we would have defo fared better

And furthermore that all the evidence pointed to Frank Lampard and John Terry having funded the ‘pharmacist’. AND that I, I mean an anonymous Arsenal supporter, had DNA evidence and photographs to prove it.

Tough job though, Barca has a weakened defence. Not any of the first choice full backs, and the wings would be the key. No marquez either. Expecting Rooney and Evra doubling up on Messi, like they did against Theo. They’d play against Barca, as they play against us. And if Barca don’t make mistakes, they can walk away with a win, despite their defence.

Oh alright then. I will support Barcelona just for this one match. But only this once mind, and only because Ian Wright is supporting the Mancs. As ex-players go if I have to choose between Ian Wright and Thierry henry I choose Thierry becuse he helped to get us to a CL Final and he never dises the club.

Man Utd win on penalties
Both Ronaldo and Messi to do absolutely nothing for the whole match. (Exhaustion maybe?)

Barcelona: Valdes, Puyol, Toure, Pique, Sylvinho, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Eto’o, Henry. Subs: Pinto, Caceres, Gudjohnsen, Krkic, Keita, Rodriguez, Muniesa.
Van der Sar, O’Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Park, Ronaldo, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, Berbatov, Nani, Scholes, Rafael, Evans, Tevez.

I thought that Ronaldo was going to Real nearly all season but the way Real have been lately I think he might still be at the mancs next season after all.
Been looking at the ManU squad and while they have some very good players I think that some of them are between OK and average at best. Where they are very strong is in central defence but once you lose either of the first two again nothing to get excited about. If you consider that Giggs, Neville and Scholes don’t have much more football in them the midfield squad looks pretty light.
If the money dries up, and they can’t go on borrowing huge amounts and not paying it back forever ManU could easily fall out of the top click of clubs.

Happy Gooner – I’ve heard that the Glazers would accept an offer for ManU. If so why have ManU not been taken over. The Glazers have a history of fucking over sports teams. Remember that they don’t give a fuck about ManU’s history, the fans, players or football in general. As long as they can keep squeezing money out of the club they don’t give a flying fuck whether ManU win the league or finish mid table. Something a few Arsenal supporters should remember when advocating a takeover.

Henry will never win the CL. Its as simple as that. What goes up always comes down. He had an agreement to play for Barca so he wasted all the chances he had against them when we played them in the CL finals. He was actually corrupted to play it soft. He put to waste two glaring one-on-one chances.
Henry also pocketed his contract fees in advance when he signed a new contract after the CL against Barca; then he engineered a move the following year destabilising the team and left. He’s a chameleon who pretends to love the club but selfish.
He won’t win. Manu will win because they deserve it and Sir Alex has always been serious focusing on rebuilding his team season after season.
He always buys quality players from abroad and try to bring through British players and buys quality British players as well. Sir Alex knows that once you keep on winning the money will flow in.
For us, AW in recent times has been buying average foreign players that’s why we will never win again unless his policy is altered.
MANU wins today 2-1 or 1-0
By: 4th the target on May 27, 2009

Barca’s attack is giving them a warm time. Once you stay secure at the back they are not that good as all they do is wait for the counter. I can honestly say that even though they are PL champs they are nothing special, to me at least.

Soundly beaten by a team with a makeshift defence and a bucketload of vertically challenged hombres with cojones and yes beautiful football has triumphed over English spines, passion and grit. Manu’s season includes, just one(?) win over the top four teams in the PL. They’ve slaughtered the lower teams. Their CL run, had been relatively easy, porto almost found them, and Inter did quite well too, in the second leg. Let’s not go to the semis:p

It was nice to see Henry lift the CL but just feels that we really missed out.
ManU were average at best. Against a good technical team where the ref won’t allow them to kick the shit out of the opposition they look very poor. Vidic who I have really rated over the last two seasons has been shown up. If good attacking players put him under pressure he loses it big time, a lesson for other teams to act on.
By: Marc on May 27, 2009
at 10:10 pm
I’m probably over-reading things but the body language of the Man poo players to each other reeks of a divided squad. Lot’s of grudges bubbling under the surface….
For e.g I just saw the Messi goal again. O’Shea saw Messi but left him (for Ferdinand) but Ferdinand didn’t see him and O’shea knew that. Once the ball goes in, O’shea gives Ferdinand the full strength of his lungs.

What a balls up by Ferguson.
Barcelona were there for the taking. He was too cautious at the start, and he was too cautious after they conceded an incredibly soft goal. Totally screwed up the midfield and tried to play too many speculative balls wide. What a cock up.
The press should slaughter Ferguson. O’Shea, Park, Anderson ?? World class ?? The normally reliable defence were a shambles. Giggs and Scholes are too old.
One may argue that Barcelona were lucky not to concede one early on, but the ball retention by Man U after that was diabolical. Why didn’t they play like that against us ??

Well congratulations Barcelona….ish. Problem for me about Barcelona is that they are the darlings of UEFA. They are also effectively a nationalist team (Catalan) and as such are as ‘doped’ as Chelski in that the club are run by different rules.
I thought Thierry was as ineffective tonight as he was in our final two years ago. BUT they beat the Mancs and for tonight that will do. Only for tonight mind you.
….Arsenal…..
P.S. Nice to see Silvinho win something. Bit wet crying his eyes out at the end but he did a credible job of replacing Giovanni, oh another Arsenal player.

Ole Gunner – As I commented earlier the ManU squad is vastly overrated. They do have some very good players but this thing about the greatest squad ever is a joke. Nani, Anderson, O’Shea, Evans, Park, Fletcher, Carrick, R da Silva, Neville even Scoles and Giggs are shadows of their former selves. All asembled for a small, sorry make that a pretty large fortune. I really feel that most teams in the PL have lost the game before they set foot on the pitch.
By: Marc on May 27, 2009

Muppet, they played well against us at Old Trafford but only managed one goal. They were extremely fortunate at Emirates with that slip that put them in a commanding position, and gave them the confidence to hit us on the counter because we were forced to chase the game. Fortunately they ran out of luck tonight and the tables were turned on them. Also, perhaps Ferdinand was rushed back and wasn’t really fit tonight?

Marc,
Unfortunately they’ve been winning trophies and the media will never ever be critical in my lifetime.
His best team is: 4-4-1
EVDS, Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Ronaldo, Anderson, Carrick, Giggs, Berbatov, Rooney
4-4-3
EVDS, Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher, Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo.
Any way you look at it, Rafael, Carrick, Anderson, Fletcher are very average players.
But he masks that with all the rotation, while the media tear apart the opposition…..

Marc, Man U benefit from a lot of hype – they steam roller the ’smaller’ teams on the back of an undeserved reputation, but when they come up against the top teams who are not scared of them it is a different story. They caught us at a bad time in the CL semi’s but in the league we did quite well against them, so we really are not that far off.

On a different note Portsmouth are close to a takeover by a mega rich Arab. Wonder how Man City, Sunderland, Chelsea and Portsmouth are going to divide up the trophies when each owner is going to make them the biggest, most successful team in the world? Honestly the spuds have got more chance.

Passenal – I agree, the points difference this season is reflected in a huge number of injuries, a couple of young players dropped in sooner than Wenger would have liked and a few internal problems, now sorted. FunGunner – My view on Vidic was based on my opinion that we needed a dominant defender like Vidic to play alongside either Gallas or Toure. When you look at his performance tonight, against Liverpool at Old Trafford and when Ferdinand has missed a couple of games shows that over estimating the opposition is as dangerous as under estimating them.

That is a very good point because I remember being concerned about how much our players were singing the praises of man u before the CL semi. Cesc has also been quoted recently describing them as having “the perfect defence”. Perhaps our players have also bought into the man u hype a bit as they are exposed to the British media – Barcelona, don’t have the same exposure to the man u hype machine.

By: OneOfUs on May 27, 2009
at 10:53 pm
Actually, Barcelona, you do raise some interesting points. Of course the first is that pep Guardiola is Barcelona born and bred and a Catalan nationalist. Steve Bould is not London born and bred. Pep was a product of the Barcelona youth system, not so Steve.
Pep was not a youth team coach, rather he coached the ’second team’. Now this is interesting because in Spain second teams or ‘B’ teams are allowed to take part in the official league. Many of us have been advocating the same in England. The youth and reserve teams would benefit hugely from playing in the league. Arsene Wenger has been the biggest advocate of this approach with not a lot of support from anyone else including you Barcaprickinglona.
The major, major difference though is the funding. Barcelona are a sort of mutual or a trust run club, this effectively means that they have been running as Chelski do for many years. They do not have to run as a business and their debts are covered.
The last point trumps all others. All of this is irrelevant because Arsenal will win the ECL for the foreseeable future, with Arsene Wenger as manager, and Steve Bould or Martin Keown or someone similar will take over eventaully with Arsene’s blessing.

Then the media will get the basic reality that it’s not onl Arsenal who are not winning trophies and that Abramovich MOST CERTAINLY did not spend £400-600 Million on players just to win the FA Cup.

LE GUNNER – It’s no secret that he hates English football and the recent dominance of English clubs in the CL has only made it worse.
The Platini plan.
Step 1 – Force English clubs to play a majority of English playes thus dramaticaly reducing the standard of English clubs.
Step 2 – Banning all clubs from fielding more than 1 English player
By: Marc on May 27, 2009

Platini is a hypocrite – the Spanish teams are full of South Americans who they import at a young age. It’s only a problem because Arsene Wenger took a couple of players from one of the UEFA darlings in Barcelona. Had he focused only on players from small teams Platini probably wouldn’t have anything to say about it.

Ole Gunner – It’s strange that Liverpool are not criticised for not winning anything recently and didn’t they finish 4th last year? Chelsea – maybe the FA cup this year (hopefully not though!) and one CL final, a really amazing return on 3 managers and how many hundreds of millions? And I really can’t see the papers being full over the summer of how ManU promised 5 trophies in 1 season and ended up with the PL and a mickey mouse cup.

But in London most English don’t mind the French at all and treat them with respect as with any other nation. So some of the French are being a little small minded perhaps? It is also true that people in Northern France identify with the English more than any other nation including their own. So the Northern French have a tendency to be …not so small minded. Interestingly given the tedious wars over the centuries the French people with the greatest dislike of the English come from south of Paris, centred on Lyons…oh there is a term for them…think, think, think…I know Vichy France….I went to Vichy once and found that the people there were more unpleasant than…er…than…er…well Mancs I suppose.

Arsene is certainly from Alsace right on the border with Germany and he was brought up speaking both languages fluently. Of course he is also well travelled and speaks several other languages and I am sure that means that he is not at all parochial.
Brittany is a Celtic region, has its own language and has an affinity with Cornwall but not really with the rest of Britain. Brittanny hales from the huge Celtic networks of Europe which were systematically dismantled by Rome.
Michel Platini is a French Italian from Nancy. Fuck knows what that means.

If there are things to learn from this, it is in the execution. We have the philosophy, but I guess lack maybe some skills and some confidence. The entire Barca backline could pass it out of trouble, and all three midfielders were constantly making themselves available. I think only once did they pass back to the keeper and he hoofed it. We used to play like this back when we had Pat and Edu and Pires, etc, but now unfortunately Song and Denilson haven’t matched such passing quality, and the back 5 are much more likely to hoof when there are no options.
Another thing is making runs. Barca forwards and were all making runs in behind, which is what we miss. Sometimes we are a bit too static when we have the ball.
Barca also pressed really well from the front. We used to do this really well, so I hope Arsene can instill this again.
Obviously the Mancs don’t deal with possession teams very well. We play like that, controlling the pace and the tempo. Ferguson always talks about how we had possession but didn’t do anything with it. Well, as we can see from today, this has more to do with us, than any strength of his team and tactics. The other obvious fact we had confirmed is that Vidic REALLY hates one on-ones. Showed a few times this season, and found REALLY wanting in his penalty box
I agree Ole Gunner, the tactical decisions were bizarre. As if Giggs and Carrick were ever going to bother Xavi and Iniesta in possession. And a host of other things.
Luckily here in Oz I could watch it Free-to-Air, instead of cable. I actually only had a single commentator who would actually keep quite sometimes, to let me savour the game, and unlike the Sky “pundits”, didn’t feel the need to regale me with uninformed, sycophantic ramblings ever second of the match.

Hi All
Fully agree that talent wise the ManUres are not street ahead of us but as a combination of Rio and Vidic, they are still world class while not invincible.
Barca essentially outplayed them in middle and the passing was a joy to behold. The Arsenal has the capability to play like that.
So what is the difference between us and Barca , it is all psychological(self belief) and maturity.
Of course injury cost us but look at Barca, 3 of their first choice defenders were injured yet they kept a clean sheet. They defended higher up as a tactic for the night and it paid dividend.
So our injuries, while a factor should never be used as an excuse as it is part and parcel of the game.
Next year with a bigger squad in terms of experience that comes with one or two signings we should be good to go.

Well done Barca. Very happy for them. Puyol was amazing, amazing. Neither Iniesta or Henry were 100%, if they were ManU would have been humiliated, as it was they were totally outplayed and shown up as an ‘honest journeyman team’. The English media’s ignorance of football and arrogance about so-called English ’spine and grit’ has been embarrassingly exposed. I was mainly interested to see how easily Rooney is contained, and Ronaldo pushed to wide areas where he is ineffective, by a capable midfield allowing no space between mid and defence, and yet without these two ManU are middle-england average.
As for Catalan Barcelona, their history, not unlike Andalucia, is not fully understood outside Spain.

Yes no point crying over spilt milk. While I am very happy for TH 14 and Silvinho and absolutely happy that the ManUres get their just desserts , I have a deep sense of disquiet at Barca’s victory and the manner which the won. In that , the next time they come calling on Cesc or any other players it ma be too tempting to refuse to be part of such a beautiful game. This come back to my point that AW must allow this team to win even the minor trophies be it the CC or the FA if nothing else to show the players that they have true potential and the hope for bigger things is real. Again , I am crying over spilt milk but the FAC would be a perfect balm for a trying season, not for me alone but for the players.
And they will be much less fodder for the very biased press to attack the Arsenal.
I hope the team will stay together next season.

I am fully aware of the history of the Catalans, ZP, and have spent a lot of time around Perpignon where many fled to during the worst times. I am also aware that until recently Spain was a fascist state. Hopefully the formation of the EU will prevent extremes rising in any European country in th future. But the Barcelona business model is very different to other clubs and over the years they have become arrogant enough to puclicly and without sanction court players from other clubs.

Denilson is not even 50% of Iniesta. Its a joke; Denilson will never be an Arsenal regular next season ‘cos he’s been found to be average.
A new better DM for the Arsenal who can tackle, pass more than 5 yards, able to retain the ball, with pace to track back, better positioning and having physical presence.
Denilson on the bench next season. Denilson in? Arsenal will be fighting for 4th once more.

You going to whine your way through the summer, Podric?
Cesc is our equivalent of Iniesta is he not? Cesc is not far away at all. Iniesta was man of the match and Cesc has been man of the match in the Spanish side. Denilson is not as effective as Iniesta in attacking situations, yet. But then he has 4 more years to catch up. He has 8 more years to catch up with Xavi, who he is probably closer to in style.
For me last nights result reaffirms AWs vision in terms of football style. More consistency at the back next year will see us in the final of the CL.

Iniesta and Xavi are far skillful than the average Denilson. Poliziano, don’t even make that comparism, its a joke.
The lad you’re promoting isn’t and don’t have the confidence to pass beyond 3 yards. I never saw Iniesta and Xavi making only backwards and sideways passing.
Denilson is one of the main reason we’ve lacked creativity this season.

We need to replace 2nd rate, average supporters, with the likes of the Barcelona and Arsenal supporters who stay behind after games.
Supporters who are distinctly average, slow to applaud, have poor stamina and do not last 75 minutes, slow to get into the seats, should be replaced by fitter, more mobile supporters, with better sitting technique and seat retention.
Supporters with low intelligence and class should also be shipped out.

I think you have made the mistake of assuming that the majority of Andalucians were against the Nationalists as were the Catalans during the Civil War but with a bit more research I think you will find that a larger part of Andalusia was very much pro the Nationalists and the Flange. It is often forgotten or not realised that the majority of Spaniards were in fact very much in favour of Franco.

A player that is 20/21 years old is expected to match consistently, no, is expected to evn be better than his above 24 years old conterpart?
So if a player is not zinadine zidane in his prime when he is 20 years old, he should never play football again?

It’s attitudes to Song which proves the irrational bias against Denilson. Song is now appreciated because of his height and his physical strength. But because they have convinced themselves that Denilson is “too lightweight” they won’t accept the clear quality of his contributions.
I remember that the Online Gooner or some other blogger wrote a headline saying that if Song is a Premier League footballer, then he’s a mop stick.
I can’t count how many times I heard people say that Song is not good enough to play in the Premier League, and is the worst Arsenal midfielder ever.
It is breathtaking that he’s now a matchwinner and world-beater! And no credit to Wenger who saw his ability, stuck with him and keeps developing him.

I agree with you as 20/21 year while he can be very good at times can not match the consistency of older players. It is what we call maturity.
Now I pose to you all another question, has Cesc improved this season over last season overall? My take on this is no, he has not improved. This begs the question why? could it be a lost of form, lethargy from the European nations cup or injury. But could it be that he does not have players better than him to learn from? It may not be exactly the same but as I, a lousy tennis player but with the basic skills , if I keep playing with better players , I inevitably will improve than when I play with poor players. That is natural for badminton, tennis, and table tennis, games which I play often. The same could somewhat be said about football, we need older better players to mentor even a player like Cesc. So I put it to you all that Arsenal need to seriuosly review their over 30 policy. Some players are worth keeping but not all though (Sylvestre comes to mind) , I am thinking more like Pires and Henry without the angst or even Sol.

I fully agree that the over 30 policy needs to be riviewed to max 2 years… some deserve one, others two… We would have been better of keeping Pires for instance at the time he left, yet be sure that some of these same fans bigging up wanted him out, he had lost pace blah blah blah.
This matter of learning from a better player than u can also go into a cyclic loop, so who does the best player of them all learn from?
Football is a team game adn understanding your team mates help, this barca team have been together for a while even the great man henry barring injuries has fared better in his second season than the first, cos i believe that he has learnt to flow with his team mates better… team spirit plays a great role in how a team perform, each working for the other and all that.
Cesc injury lay off affected his form more than anything else, also his partnership wigh Hleb and Rosicky and also flamini would have gone up another level if all had been in th =e same team ths season.
Watch how much better Cesc, Arshavin, Nasri, Rosicky and Van P in the same team consistently next season will do. How many times have these played together as a team? Compare this to how long the Barca midfield has been together for example…

Looking back over some predictions I posted on ACLF last August, here’s some I got right (sort of):
- Eboue will finally come good.
- an aging Toure will be edged out of the starting line-up by a strong Djourou/Gallas partnership. (this one isn’t entirely correct – and I was stupid to put it down to “aging”)
- Walcott’s development will reach a temporary plateau of being above average (for his level), but he will also show more consistency.
- Fabregas might have a bit of a wobbly season. He’ll still put in a handful of exemplary match-winning performances, but I just have a gut feeling that he will struggle to maintain his consistency this year. However if the team can learn to be just as effective without Cesc as with Cesc, then that is a good thing.
- Van Persie will stay fit and score more goals than Adebayor this season.
- Armand Traore who? Kieran Gibbs (if he doesn’t get loaned out) will make that left-back position his own during the Carling Cup. (never would’ve thought he’d make it his own in the FA Cup as well though!)
- We will not fall apart at the end of the season like last, rather this time, we will start the season in a very low gear, gradually building up more momentum towards the end. Consistency in defense with the likes of Djourou and Song will give us more confidence protecting 1-0 leads.
And some I got very wrong:
- Toure will play more in midfield
- lack of back-up for the full-backs will be most costly when injuries strike the team
- A renewed Rosicky would give us a boost in the second half of the season
- Bischoff would break into the first team and blow everyone away (lol)

…One thing I noticed since Barca’s victory is the back-flips the English media have been making. Prior to the game, they were sycophants extolling the super-heroes at Manu and the genius of Ferguson. Today, without fail, Barcelona is the best in football, not just Europe, according to one headline…The truth is they are utterly hypocritical. How long will it take them to extol the virtues of English grit and a true English spine? To extol the virtues of Big Sam’s cloggers who are giving players like Wacott a kicking.
One more thing: How about that big no-nonsense Defensive Midfielder, Brusquets and that steely-eyed towering Central Defender, Vidic?

shotta, it will take too much effort even for the lazy journos of english media to find fault with the game of yesterday…
It was too clean, no controversy and if there was ever a pen not given, then it would have been to barca and not man u.
Well done to the ref and his assistants

Hi London, Pz, Frank … To be honest I don’t know enough about Spain, and should not have made that comment. There is a romantic notion, that’s all, with the idea of regions asserting ‘local identity’ as a form of resistance. I did not know in Andalucia there was a majority in favour of the Flange, I know the war there was bitter. Anyway, blissful ignorance, and I stand to be corrected.
Thanks.
Having said that I really enjoyed the game, especially the way Barca had confidence to ride the early onslaught and dominate to such a degree. There are lots of happy gunners around here this morning coz they all support Barca.
I think psychologically the match is important to younger Arsenal players, to see how the passing game outwits and outplays the ‘defensive discipline’ game, as played by ‘the best team in England’. It helps too when the referee is fair.
Arsenal, with their current players can emulate Barca’s success (not Barca as such, coz we are Arsenal) this year, take on and beat the best.
I was surprised Hleb could not make the bench.

Zim, yeah over here in Nigeria, the average gunner is by default a Barca fan, and i know they wold have been yesterday alone even if just for the gloating of the Man U fans over their semi final victory

Yeah Team Spirit, from this distance, Arsenal equates to Barca (in style and some other factors), while Read Madrid equates to ManU/Chelsea – smug and arrogant.
