Weekend Catch Up and The Usual Stuff

Arsenal 4 – 1 Stoke City

1 – 0 Beattie (o.g.)
2 – 0 van Persie (16 pen)
3 – 0 Diaby (18)
3 – 1 Fuller (31 pen)
4 – 1 van Persie (41)

On the twentieth anniversary of that night, the Youth’s get their chance to go back to the future by winning the FA Youth Cup at Anfield. Best of luck to them, especially since their demolition of Liverpool in the first leg was worth the trophy being handed over on that night alone.

A weekend of lessons learnt:

  • an early goal in a match often leads to a comfortable victory
  • Ladies, if you ever go to HMS Belfast in London, wear trousers as those wearing skirts will lose every shred of dignity ascending the steps
  • three in the first twenty minutes = game over
  • sitting on the doorsteps of the Spanish Embassy in London and explaining to your oldest son about Sir Francis Drake is enough to start a diplomatic incident, no matter how sunny a Saturday morning it is
  • van Persie’s contract renewal is the key signing of the summer with his ‘assist’ to Abou Diaby meaning that he tops the EPL in this area. If people aren’t convinced by him now, they never will be
  • small child + running at high speed + brick wall = five hours in the local A&E

Sunday’s match was about as one-sided as was witnessed at The Emirates and a good way to finish the season. Stoke rolled over and played dead as any good visitor should but the movement and passing over the Arsenal midfield should not be underestimated. Despite the absence of any further scoring in the second half, leaving the match meant mixed feelings. Ahead is a summer of tiresome transfer speculation, especially with Cesc on Confederations Cup duty and at the mercy of the Spanish media.

Also, it was a case of what might have been had the season started better. It is an old footballing cliche that the table never lies and finishing fourth is the position merited by Arsenal over the past ten months. Yet has shown their capabilities and 2009/10 should be anticipated with quiet confidence in that it can prove more rewarding than this campaign.

In terms of the performance in the match alone, it is impossible to give anyone less than ten out of ten. Stoke were entirely compliant and it was obvious that having achieved their aim of retaining their Premier League status, they were having a day out. As soon as Cesc and van Persie combined to free the Spaniard for a drilled cross into the box that James Beattie obligingly turned into his own net, it was a case of how many?

The second came from the softest of penalties won all season. Ryan Shawcross is highly rated by some and learned a valuable lesson: never put your arms around a player who is turning your defence inside out for they will rightly play on that infringement. van Persie’s spot-kick on the other hand was the perfect example of that art, as close to the post as you can get meaning it was impossible to stop.

Diaby’s header from the Dutchman’s free kick was a fine example of how to put the ball into the net when unchallenged. The Stoke consolation was a pitiful penalty to concede and also unnecessary. No blame to Manonne, having committed himself to going one way, Fuller simply put the ball the other.

The comedy element of Stoke’s defending was not over when their secret weapon, Rory Delap, suggest he might be a double-agent by heading the ball straight back to van Persie in the area for the Dutchman to provide instant control, swivel and the expected goal.

Overall, the Premier League this season was unremarkable. For all that Liverpool pushed United, the race was over before May had begun, as is normally the case. That no-one was able to take advantage of the Champions erratic form following the end of their solid defensive run in the Christmas, shows how far the rest of the top four have to go to overtake them.

In some respects it is a shame Newcastle were relegated, in others it was not. In fact, the only regret I can think of is that it meant Hull, or Phil Brown to be precise, remaining in the top flight. Looking at their form since Christmas, the stay of execution will only be one season as their tactically inept suntan seems incapable of arresting their slide. That they have remained highlights the fact that those who expect a relegation dogfight before the season are sometimes better equipped than more talented individuals in other clubs. Newcastle may have some good players but ultimately they were not a ‘team’ in its truest sense. Whether they bounce back or slide in the same manner as Leeds, we can only live in hope, sorry, we shall see.

Finally, congratulations to Burnley on their promotion to the Premier League. We will like even more if you oblige with six points next season.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. I thought Evra’s challenge to be rather juvenile. Can he be charged for bringing the game into disrepute?

    http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/Football/2009/05/26/Prem-Evra-insists-on-Fabregas-vengeance/gnid-54504/

  2. ANFIELD 89- I was there. There will never be another night or match like it.

George,TA and the rest of the players are all Gooner Legends

    Its up for grabs NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

  3. Evra’s a prize twat. If you go round insulting the opposition, you shouldn’t be surprised if they have a go back at you. The ref was over-protective, too, giving us five yellows. Not one of the challenges merited anything more than afree kick.

    Have we bought anyone yet?

  4. david

I was there too. After the 2-2 draw v Wimbledon i wasnt going to go as i thought we had blown it.But my best mate Ray convinced me to go.And it turned out to be the greatest night in our history.

Every time i see Mickeys goal with the wonderful commentry by Brian Moore i still get a shiver up my spine.

Takes Ray.Oh me of little faith

  5. 4th the target

Can the current crop of players replicate the Anfield win 20 years ago? No. Put to the test in the CL game at Anfield last season and CL game against Manu under similar circumstances, they bottled it.

The current players don’t have what it takes to win a crucial game like 1989, which won us the title after 18 years of efforts.

The 1989 players had Arsenal imprinted in their hearts. The players that we have now lack love for the club. They’re just employees brought to do a job. There is no Arsenal spirit in the dressing room.

AW should recruit some English players into the team to create a spine for the team, otherwise, we’ll still be fighting for 4th.

All foreign recruitment is the major mistake AW has made since he came, bringing in only foreign players and ignoring scouting for players in England.

Skills? A lot of the players we have don’t have skills so the skills argument is flat.

I’m hopeful though because we have a lot of talented lads who’ll reintroduce the 1989 spirit in 2/3 years time.

  6. yawn

  7. You want an English spine? What, like the one at Villa?

  8. When George Graham took over as Arsenal manager we were a club going nowhere fast. And he gave us fans something you cannot buy PRIDE.
He made Arsenal a team that could challenge the Big boys again.

And even after he left he left his legacy to Arsene, the greatest back 5 EVER

Today is a day to celebrate Anfield 89 and also the man behind it George Graham

  9. 4th the target

    GoonerGerry

Villa has very good English players among them.

I’ll take Ashley Young over the ‘great’ Diaby any day. Mind you they’re within the same age bracket.

I’ll also take agbonglahor over Bendtner. I’ll also also take Davies over Djourou and Sylvester, even Toure in current state.

The current players love Arsenal? Ask Adebayor for the answer. They’re all mercenaries.

I’m happy Gibbs is coming through fast. Anytime I watch Gibbs play, I read his eyes and see a great Arsenal legend in the making.

We’ve no spine and these foreign players don’t care. Just check the lazy play of Diaby and Eboue. Its all about the money they get.

  10. Yawn….is not the word that can really describe how i feel when i read some posts by ‘faNs’ but hell i will give it a go…YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

  11. 4TT,

Get over that whole English spine crap.

  12. Davies over Toure. Find your pills pronto.

  13. Alas 4TT your argument is self-defeating.

Neither Davies nor Young came through Villa’s ranks – they were both bought and therefore care not one jot for Villa thus they are mercenaries.

English birthright does not negate mercenary instincts; ask Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell. Arsenal lost the former but gained the latter because of them.

Comparing players is a valid exercise but only when they are players in the same position. Young is a natural winger, Diaby is not and therefore suffers in any comparison.

    YW

  14. GG does deserve to be celebrated. I have never liked the Dark Scot. Did not like our football under him. And the bung scandal and going to coach the Spuds has really weakened my affinity for what he did contribute to the glory of the Club.

But he deserves a lot of credit. And I-m glad people are willing to give him it.

  15. Alex Ice Cream

Thomas, charging through the midfield. Thomas, ITS UP FOR GRABS NOW, Thomas right at the end!

The worlds of the immortal Brian Moore RIP.

He’s still one of the best commentators. Great tone, use of words and crucially silence.

  16. I’m happy Gibbs is coming through fast. Anytime I watch Gibbs play, I read his eyes and see a great Arsenal legend in the making.

I’m just as happy about Gibbs, but something tells me you might not be saying the same thing about him if he was the same person but happened to be from a different country.

We have great local talent in the youths and reserves, many of them from London. I think that is a great thing, as it’s important to show that London can and will always breed excellent footballers, and the more of them that come through the Arsenal, the better. But we also have French players like Gilles Sunu and Francis Coquelin who play their hearts out for the Arsenal and run the opposition ragged for 90 minutes. It’s important to recognise that sometimes they put in a better, more dedicated shift than some of the English players.

On the pitch what matters is passing, not passports. Yes, it IS good to have home-grown English players in your team, but also good to have a mix of various nationalities too. We can be a local club and an international one at the same time, don’t be so narrow-minded.

  17. I know what you mean Ole – I can’t say i ever revelled in the “boring boring Arsenal” era.

Supported and defended the club naturally but when i hear the GG era trotted out as justification for not supporting Wenger fully (i.e. We were successful before he came.) Sort of misses the point just how much Mr Wenger has transformed the way we play.

I’m quite proud of the fact that we are most peoples second favourite club….

  18. QoS

We were not boring between 86-92.The boring years were 93-95.

The defence that won the double was created by George.

It makes me sick that some Gooners slag off one of our greatest managers. Before George came in 86 we were mid-table shit

  19. Eddie – you have a very selective memory then.

We were accused of being “functional and boring” plenty of times during the 86-92 years as well. Not always fairly I grant you but the chant rang out nationwide.

Not wishing to demean GG or his achievements. He gave us some great moments.

I just prefer the football we’ve played under Wenger to the football we played under George. Sorry if that makes you sick but last time I checked i’m entitled to have a preference?

  20. George Graham gave me my two greateast memories as an Arsenal fan.I was at Anfield in 1989 and in Copenhagen in 1994.

Two miracle wins that sum our great club up.

Just look at the midfield for that Parma game it contained Steve Morrow and Ian Selley. And Ian Wright was suspended.A victory of true grit

George Graham laid the foundations which Arsene has built on.And today of all days i shall be raising my glass in honour of him.6 trophies in 8 years. And he came within 1 game of becoming the Invincibles in 1991

  21. I wondered how long it would be into the summer transfer speculation before someone started on about the English spine! Great, lets sell Addy and bring in Hesky, he is after all the best English player in that position according to the England manager. And it’s really good to know that someone has such insider knowledge of the spirit in the Arsenal dressing room.

  22. 4th TT

Your a sad old fart aren’t ya!

Your comments dont merit any response but i just have to say your a racist and your living in the past mate. Look around the streets of London and check what kind of world your living in

  23. Denilson… Fabregas… RvP…. Clichy… Toure… Song… Sagna… they are very workman like…

They all live and breathe Arsenal, all our players do, they are given respect and freedom to play football. To end 4th in the Premiership and go on a 21 unbeatan run and putting no effort in ??? sounds rediculous dont u think 4th The Pric*!

  24. silver gunner

    well said blackstock!!!

  25. QoS

No one is denying the football is better under Wenger. But what George did was take us out of the Dark days of Terry Neill and Don Howe and made us WINNERS again. And for that we should be eternally grateful.

  26. silver gunner

    a bit OTT ChrisGoona

  27. silver gunner

If only GG and wenger could work together then we would be unstoppable!!!!!

Brilliant going foward and inpentrable in defense.

  28. Sorry i won’t be joining in this convo….I am a 80s baby and AW last 12 years is all i really remember long may the Wengerball continue…..

    Do appreciate the memories though!!

  29. 4th the target

The way some Arsenal fans downgrade the achievement of Graham is mind-boggling at times. GG won two titles and other cups within a very short.

GG built a team dominated by locals with Arsenal written in their hearts and built the famous back 6 made up of Dixon, Keown, Adams, Bould, Winterburn and Seaman.

Now the team has no local spine and we can pay all that money to these players and they will still be unable to repeat the achievement of Anfield in 1989.

When challenged at Anfield in 2007, CL, they were found short same as Old trafford. On their own ground here in London against Manu and Chelsea, they fell big time.

We need strong dressing room and spine as built by Graham.

Graham will always remain my heroe.

Graham was the one who transformed Arsenal from a midtable team to a title and cups winning team in the late eighties.

Fans have short memories. Now we’re drifting back to mid table.

  30. Steve McMahon(one minute) John Aldridge,King Kenny and the rest of them Scouse cunts you took a hell of a beating

    One minute,One minute,One minute

We won the league on the mersey we won the league on merseyside

  31. 4th the target

Graham got sacked… do you happen to know why???? U bloody muppet.

Take nothing away from what he done for our club, but stop living in the past, we have a great manager and we are competing at the top… actually let me rephrase that, we have been competing at the top for nearly 15 yrs now thanks to Wenger.

    Are you not satisfied?

  32. silver gunner

hahaha… OTT… think you should be saying that to 4th the target after his brainless comments. Wenger is our most successfull manager, Graham had a solid defence and his sides were no where near the level Wenger has taken us to, they had grit and spirit… but i think Wengers teams have shown alot more.. they have battled against every negative aspect thrown at them for season after season. We have competed with the biggest club United, Chelsea’s spending power, maintained a high league position through moving stadiums, and play the best football on the planet on our day.

    How can you compare that???

  33. I agree Spider.

My main point was really that there are some who in their justifications for slagging off the current team and management throw George Graham out there as though everything was perfect under him.

It wasn’t then and it isn’t now.

I guess that what I am saying is that, unsupportive behaviour is still unsupportive. (not a dig at you btw).

  34. silver gunner

Graham is a legend, his attacking football however was one dimensional but effective Ian W/ Alan S combo was effective at causing even the hardest defenses a serios headache and AW should look to emulate the hardworking mentality that GG team had when not in possesion of the ball that is one of the things that the two managers are leagues apart.
Don’t get me wrong I woudn’t swap AW for any other manager but we as a team need to start working harder when we dont have the ball.

  35. ChrisGoona: “Look around the streets of London and check what kind of world your living in”

You expressed exactly what I was thinking about the archaic “English for Arsenal” bullshit. London is one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities in the globalised world of today.

If I am not wrong, Boro is one of the most “English” sides in this year’s premier league. And they have just been relegated.

  36. If not for Wengerball as played by the Invincibles (Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Bergkamp, Vieira…), many of today’s converted Arsenal fans wouldn’t be so in love with the beautiful game. They were a showpiece for football, the Harlem Globetrotters of the English game. And the orchestrator was Wenger.

    I love Wenger.

  37. One of the main differences between GG’s Arsenal and AW’s Arsenal is that Wenger is aspiring to create a club where winning the top trophies is not a case of “the miracle wins of ’89 and ’94″ (romantic and mind-blowing, though they were!)….but of consistent greatness due to being one of the top, and most attractive footballing clubs in Europe. Miracle wins are for teams winning against the odds. Wenger is on a long-term mission, changing those odds. Soon we will be a team that no longer heroically punches above our weight…But we will be a heavy weight in our own right.

  38. I aggree with Maria’s comment @ 11:45.

Is 4th the target, Howard by any chance, Yogi?

  39. mingus

Nicely said, nobody expected Grahams teams to win the league, he done very well to do so. Wenger is setting our club to be able to challenge the big boys in european and world football. He has created a legacy at our club which will remain with us, the whole club aspires right the way through to play be playing the ‘wenger/arsenal way’.. he has brought true and pure football to us. He has brought Football everyone loves, we will win the league, and when we do it wont be because we went out and bought the most obvious 30m per player signings, it will be because we have played the best football and we would have done things the right way with players that love playing for the Arsenal.

4th The target – For us to win the league with English players we will have to buy them 30m players, these players wont care or be as passionate for Arsenal any more than a Cesc or a Clichy… your argument is extremely flawed.

We live in a world where we demand everything today… success is alot sweeter when you earn it the right way, when you work for it, and when you dont sell the basis of your club to foreign or financial interests. We our extremely privileged to have a board at our club which are full of supporters. The same cannot be said for many clubs.

  40. Malaysiangunner

    YW good one

    Chrisgoona

Your eulogy of AW is well received here and I for one am very grateful for the place he has brought The Arsenal into, playing wonderful footbal which is a joy to watch and competing genuinely in Europe. Winning many plaudits and fans along the way.
But at oppropriate moments for appropriate players, the market and the game , demands that we spend a bit more to make that final leap of close also rans to eventual winners.
We need to start building the team into one with a winner’s mentality which is lacking during crunch matches. This is the final hurdle that this team lacks.

    We Are The Arsenal!!!!

  41. 4TT, you said;

“GG built a team dominated by locals with Arsenal written in their hearts and built the famous back 6 made up of Dixon, Keown, Adams, Bould, Winterburn and Seaman”.

Of the players you mention, only Tony Adams is a local lad. And GG wasn’t the one who discovered him.

  42. Malaysiangunner

As for Newcastle the way it is imploding, it is a very good example why we should stick to AW and not chop and change at the vocal minority’s whims and fancies.

  43. Eddie McGinty

Can’t really comment about Graham as the first Arsenal game I went to was the game after he had been sacked, fun times. My Dad loves him though and that’s good enough for me.

  44. MG,

“We need to start building the team into one with a winner’s mentality which is lacking during crunch matches. This is the final hurdle that this team lacks.”

I think the team is already there, you’re just basing your view on 3 matches, the F.A cup semi, and the CL semis. If anything, we beat both the teams this season. It couldn’t have been done without the winner’s mentality. You can go on about the FA cup, but it was 50:50, could have gone anywhere. We were at a disadvantage with the injured players. As for the CL semi-final, we were outplayed in the first leg to some extent, but got away with just one goal. And the first 7-8 minutes of the 2nd leg suggested that we were going to run riot, but unfortunately things didnt turn out the way we would have liked. The game was over, right there. Only a team with a winner’s mentality would have gone so far in the F.A cup and CL, despite so many injuries to key players. What we need is better luck on the injury front, actually that won’t be an issue next season, for we have Denilson, Song, Bendtner, Diaby, who have had a good run of games, and are capable of filling in, for many of the first choice players, with ease. The future is very bright.

  45. Malaysiangunner

The signing if Arshavin… Cesc’s Euro 2008 medal, 21 unbeatan run, the emergence of Gibbs… these are just very very small indications of what is to come. Faith, loyalty and patience is the key if you are able to show that… these are elements of a true supporter. This season sections of the Arsenal fans failed to show these factors and failed to show what a supporter really is. In a way it reflects in the smaller games that when the fans aint up for it.. the players aint up for it.

  46. Ateeb

well said… we have all the ingredients except for 1 – which i was explaining to Malaysiangunner

  47. Luke

Sadly the converted fans you talk about are also the fans who turn up at the Grove sit down and dont sing,They are the Sky tv generation. They turn up yes.But where is their passion for the club

  48. Spider

If the fans showed them a bit more passion, my money is that they will give a bit more too. Look at the first 7 mins against Man Utd in the 2nd leg

  49. Well said Spider

we get 60,000 every game but they make less noise than the 38,000 we used to get at Highbury. We have a good team a magnificent stadium but shit support.A trip to Ashburton Grove is seen by many of our “fans” as a trip to Alton Towers a day out.
Why the fuck cant these Johnny Come Latelys get behind the team.Sing you muppets

  50. 26-5-1989

They are too busy admiring the stadium, maybe we should make it more glum looking so fans switch their focus on supporting the team!

  51. Spider,

You’re making a very generalized statement. It’s more of a subjective thing. I would be singing my heart out if I attended games. And so would many like me, from the generation you’re talking about. But If anything, I aggree with Spider, the older ones need to show them the way.

  52. “But If anything, I aggree with Spider, the older ones need to show them the way.”

Should read “I aggree with Chris”.

  53. What if we installed speakers that done the cheering for us…??… imagine…

    Arsssseeeennnnaaaalll……………..
    Arsssseeeennnnaaaalll……………..
    Arsssseeeennnnaaaalll……………..
    Arsssseeeennnnaaaalll……………..
    Arsssseeeennnnaaaalll……………..

continually been sung for the whole game!!!

Ok i went to far, but if we had somebody on a mic to get the crowd going, just to get the songs started perhaps. They can put that across in the match programmes, everyone would be up for that.

  54. All the noisiest stadiums in the world have ringleaders getting them all going. Has anyone seen ‘Real football factories International’… i know they are thugs, but they install that passion into the stadium. We dont have to go to that extreme obviously, but some sort of group needs to be started and responsible for creating a more passionate atmosphere at the Emirates.

Use to love the East and North Bank at Highbury continually singing to each other througt every game.

  55. Chris Goona

Agree with you point. The best fans i have seen at the Grove were the Zagreb fans in 2006.Even though their team was losing they were non stop jumping up ad down and singing. Our fans our just too reserved its as if they are afraid to sing. And another thing our Gestapo stewards dont hell throwing people out for standing up and singing. They even threw out some kids at the youth cup final

  56. One of the big mistakes the club made when the Grove opened was to have a whole end a singing section.Where fans can stand up all game and not be told to sit down.On Sunday i was in block 24 next to the Stoke fans they were allowed to stand all game yet i was told to sit down 3 times by a steward.

I also heard that the stewards were throwing out young supporters for standing up at the youth cup final. What planet are these stewards from

  57. I was near the Liverpool fans during the Youth Cup Final. They were standing up for almost the entire game. They were singing each word perfectly in unison, LOUDER than the Arsenal crowd, even when we were winning 4-1! I was standing up quite often too and didn’t get questioned by the stewards either, so i’m very surprised to hear that there were people getting thrown out. Maybe we were just lucky and in a section which had some good stewards. For the whole game we were doing our best to make some noise and get the people around us into it, most of them would sing for 10 seconds and then stop, or they didn’t know the words and couldn’t be bothered to join in. For a lot of the people in the crowd it was a family outing though, lots of parents and kids. Having said that, I reckon some of those kids could give the regular crowd a run for their money!

  58. silver gunner

Spider 1.39 you hit the nail on the end, its too much control by all means calm down the idiots in the crowd but this overly strict crowd control makes supporters less likely to sing like we should sing.

Something that the club seriously need to look at a section of the ground needs to be allowed to express themself without fear of repercussion.

Onto the kids half the job is already done but as Wilshire pointed out complacency is their worst enemy.

I hope reports about Hangeland are correct, he seems the real deal and wil keep the likes of Djourou on his toes Silvestre will go back to being just a backup player.

  59. shotta-gunna

Is this the start of some new sh*t-stirring for the summer?

Now it is Graham vs Wenger. Translation: English vs Foreigners. Chauvinism vs Internationalism, Hate Tolerance vs .

Is it any surprise that following the abject failure of the recent campaign to slander Wenger and belittle his achievements, as evident by the ringing endorsement of AW at the Emirates on Sunday, the usual hate-mongers like 4TT are now stirring the traditional themes of racists and rascals. Beware Gooners of these wolves in sheeps clothing.

  60. silver gunner

Blackstock dude i was at the Hull game when that Geovani goal stunned us and Adebayor and co all had stinkers but rather than get behinf the team the whole crowd was subdued and the Hull fans really put us to shame we as supporters need to help make our home a fortress.

  61. shotta-gunna

    Correction: Hate vs Tolerance.

  62. silver gunner

It was very subdued, and it has been at many games where we havnt taken an early lead. Anything can happen in football, we should just get behind the team no matter what, they needed us this season and many supporters turned their back on them.

  63. The George Graham thing for some is just a way of saying “we don’t need Wenger”.

Further evidence of their inability to support the club.

  64. Chris what’s worse is that they turned their backs and then boasted to each other about what great supporters of the club they are becasue they “dare” be critical.

    Without a trace of irony.

  65. Must be really quite ****ing depressing being surrounded by a bunch of people like that during the game, silver.

I’ve yet to go to a “proper” game at The Grove yet (league/champions league etc, too poor!), so I can’t really speak from experience of these people. I just can’t figure out why they don’t bother. Maybe they don’t know the words to sing along, or they’re too shy. It’s not rocket science, how hard is it to make some noise?

  66. SG,

Graham isn’t English so maybe it’s British v Foreigner

The Wenger v George Graham thing is just a way to undermine Wenger’s accomplishments.

  67. When does the transfer window actually open?

  68. Ole

I would never undermine Arsene”s achievements he is our greatest manager ever, but sadly some on here want to undermine George”s achievements, yes you QoS

    Lets celebrate two great managers

  69. QoS

I believe it is June 1st to August 31st this year. The only time it is extended is if Aug 31st falls on a weekend.

    YW

  70. Spider. How is it undermining George Grahams acheivements by suggesting that I prefer the football we play under Arsene Wenger?

    I’d love an answer.

  71. I loved the George Graham era. We should all be proud of his achievements. We were truly rubbish before he came. And I wasn’t at all bothered that everyone else called us ‘boring, boring Arsenal’.

However, Arsene came along and showed us we can be successful AND play fabulous footy. We’ve been spoiled by years of watching some of the best footy on the planet. I wouldn’t want to go back to GG’s style of football now.

  72. The time for supporting Graham was when he was Arsenal manager. Now it’s Wenger’s turn.

  73. Window is already opened for the Serie A in Italy? It is not 1st June yet.

“Brazilian playmaker Diego has completed his “dream” move to Juventus from Werder Bremen, for a fee of €24.5m.”

  74. Wenger has shown more than once that attacking football and winning football can be combined in Arsenal in the Invincible team. Another is being built right now. I’m looking forward to it.

  75. First give Arsene Wenger and the current team all the support they need. Whatever is left over can go to the men of the past.

  76. I agree with Pz @ 3.50.

  77. When does the window open ? Anybody know ?

  78. Graham’s achievements are overshadowed by the period 1991/2 onwards.
The 88/89 and 90/1 title winning sides were very good football teams. They passed rather than played the long ball whereas from 91/2 onwards, it was get the ball forward asap for Smith and Wright to deal with hence the arrival of the mundane and average midfielders.

Graham should not be disparaged for the early years but anyone who believes he should not be criticised is playing a revisionist game, and probably criticising Wenger for not winning anything…

    YW

  79. Muppet

I refer the right honourable gentleman to my earlier reply at 3.26pm

    YW

  80. According to the FA, the window opens at midnight on the last day of the season. I assume the end of the season is Cup Final day.

  81. Great article here: http://www.arsenal.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=514560

It’s about stats but interesting categories and broken out by the author, not pasted from some website. There are some interesting things on there and anyone who wants to clean house with some of the players that it has become fashionable amongs “fans” to slate would do well to read. You know who you are.

  82. silver gunner

I think players can sign pre-contract agreements now with finalities being tied up after 1st June e.g Diego move.

  83. Silver

A player is entitled to sign a “pre-contract” as soon as he enters the final six months of an existing contract.

On the continent, many deals are sorted out in advance and go through on 1st June. To be honest, it would be a godsend if Arsene did all of his shopping and had it out of the way in the first week of the close season.

    YW

  84. This season, Fabregas has gone from fans’ favourite to just another scapegoat, with Crafty Bison “sick of the sight of him;” and yet Gris Gris’s statistics show that he has been very effective at creating chances for the team.

Bendtner, by one measure, is the team’s sharp-shooter, and I think it is fair to say that next season we will have four excellent strikers, any combination of which is capable of scoring plenty of goals for us.

  85. Around 25m for Diego?!? That’s shit lot of money.

WHY HAVEN’T WE SIGNED ANYONE YET!?!?! WHY DOES WENGE LIE?!?! I TOLD YOU HE’D LIE.

    What happened to crafty?:S

  86. .

  87. Ateeb,

If you think the team is ‘already there’ then I can only suggest you get back on those tablets! Even Arsene admits he would have to make changes to the team…i can accept sycophancy but delusion?

OK, I’m ready now hit me with a witty response;)

  88. Good morning/afternoon!

Did Arsenal win due to Stoke not playing to win?

Did we draw against Man U because they settled for the draw?

This takes away from our teams play in my view.

  89. Adebayoooor….Adebayooooorre
Give him the ball……and he will scoorrrreee.

  90. It was interesting those stats which said RVP takes longest after Walcott to make a pass at around every three minutes. Maybe there is some basis on the argument that RVP does slow down play but having actually analysed him, it is more in relevance to his position.

  91. Mandanda,

Witty response? You’ve been here before, don’t recall you posting though. Change of names?

Well Wenger has said he might bring in a couple of players. I think that would be the right thing to do, but I’m not much of an armchair manager, to decide what’s best for the team. And who to bring, and for what positions. Seems like defensive player/players will be brought in. Apart from that the team is there, as far as I am concerned. To say the team lacks the winning mentality is being too harsh on our players. They’ve had some lapses of concentration, but it happens even to the very best. That’s football for you. Deal with it.

  92. A team that has to get over the hump of winning major trophies has to first get to the hump, which our mostly young team have done. It is easy to see that winning something is the next step for our team. We are right on the cusp, at least in my view, regardless of our position in the PL.

    ARSENAL!

    Blesssings!

  93. Mandanda,

2 Semi-Finals…losing both games mainly on individual errors speaks volumes about are ability to challenge and win next season…….

Also i saw Rosicky behind the subs bench on Sunday and realised once again how much i really MISS HIM can’t wait to see him on the pitch with his bangs flapping again!!

  94. Evening PaulN..

Yogi, was your little one doing a theo impression?????

  95. running fast into a brick wall……

  96. “Bangs” what are they???

  97. dead in ere tonight!!!!!!!

  98. 4 post’s in a row!!

  99. whats the record.who fukin cares…fu*k i must be bored.

  100. oh you almost broke the record. Just a couple more post and you would have got there. Sorry to spoil your party.

  101. Yeah, what are “bangs flapping?”

  102. Something to do with the hair…..or hair.

  103. Ricky’s curtain haircut i have a feeling it’s still all the rage in Eastern Europe.

  104. hehe you guys….please don’t act like you haven’t noticed….throught it was the worse going till Sagna came along…gbh

  105. He has the look of an artist. There are lots of artists in eastern Europe, but none in Britain.

  106. Sagna’s hair……..is that the change Wenger was talking about for the summers?

  107. flipping bangs flapping
    floppy bangs flipping
    flicking bangs flocking

  108. How’s the job Ateeb? all well?

  109. Well they do call him Little Mozart down at the Grove…..

  110. There is one artist in Britain, but he lives up in Scotland, and hasn’t been seen in a while

  111. He the malt whisky recipe guy at the island of Islay

  112. Poliziano…there are a few piss artist’s in britain!!!

  113. Ateeb have we bought Cana yet? Have you actually sent the dossier to AW?

  114. The job’s fine, not too bad. Learning the tricks of the trade for now. Get alot of idle time, though.

  115. Z,

    Ateeb has been slacking recently…….

  116. Maria,
you man those nifty-looking hanging ‘curtain dreads’ that Sagna spent weeks on?

  117. Cana? I think Muppet bought and finished that drink.

  118. Watt!!!!

    1-0 to the Arse

  119. Yet again Vela was on the bench…..

  120. Is Cana ugly?

  121. OG please keep us updated!!

  122. Z,

Yep but they aren’t dreads they are blond braids….and they don’t flap…..

  123. Ateeb I thougt you were put in charge of the top secret very hush hush ‘research and development’ divison (Dept DG, code name ‘monster DM’ operation ‘fugly’)?

  124. “Poliziano…there are a few piss artist’s in britain!!!”

Yep, vomiting on the pavement is about the limit of British creativity.

  125. Is Cana uglier than Vela, for example? Is Vela also a drink? Does Cana go with … um … pasta?

Maria, I have it on highest authority (god basically, oops let that slip) that Sagna is … ahem … naturally blond. No, really.

  126. Im sure there are a few fine artists in britain.

  127. what about Banksy!!!

  128. Pz any fool can throw up … it’s how you do it. There are some truly inspirational ‘pavement artists’ in sunny england, especially in Dagenham …. barking at the ants as it were.

  129. Cana’s a handsome fellow.

  130. Howard really needs to come on here right about now………Pz you have been warned….we in Britain have passionate artists with desire and a Y branch backbone…..you old snub….I paint after every loss the pain is my inspiration my cave paintings shall not be mocked!!!

  131. “Im sure there are a few fine artists in britain.”

    - creative accounting being a speciality.

  132. Have your wounds healed yet, Maria?

  133. Well he’s no damn good to us then … the dossier specified ‘ugly defender’. Is he mean and nasty?

  134. You too Zee…..now i need Happy Gooner…damnnn

On Cana……oh please i think shopping in the central and South American area could be more fruitful….

  135. maria you must have done a few paintings this year!!!! joke dont bite me ed off!

  136. zp,

Can’t seem to find the ugliest ones out there. We did narrow it down to one, but than fans would complain that manu let him go because he was a reject there. Apparently manu specialise in that ugly depeartment.

  137. Howard disappeared in a black hole.
    We were sad.
Then Patrick came along and cheered everyone up with his hippopatamus wit.

    (Hippos eat grass).

  138. not you personnaly maria but any gooner on ere who would take that as anegative comment.

  139. DG….yes my walls have been covered quite extensively…..

  140. my speling is up the wall again…lack of sleep!!!

  141. Don’t mock the Union Jack … Pz.

    Shelley was an artist.

    He died, sadly.

  142. Yellow card for Duke.

  143. I’m not counting literature. English literature is brilliant.

  144. Try drinking water upside down DG.

It’s great for spelling, hiccups, and delusions.

  145. Half time still 1 nil to the Arse

  146. On what grounds Ateeb?

Also if you handing out cards i want Pz cautioned he has insulted the extensive Camden artists posse that i am a part of in Britain.

And no we don’t drink we consider our bodies as temples and works of art in themselves.

  147. Is there an Italian author you particularly like Pz?

  148. Yellow, for having a cheap shot at our season, lol.

Can’t caution Pz, I know little of British artists, if there are any. Can’t get involved in something I know little of. You’ll have to pull some strings to make me caution Pz.

  149. Pull pull…..tag tag….

  150. Banksy is a great english artist who’s work now sell s to the rich and famous, Poliziano have you not heard of him?????

  151. Or me……what can i say….Pz is not as cultured as you and i DG….

  152. You’ll have to do better than that.

    Zp,

Who would you suggest for African literature?

  153. David Hockney….Lucien Freud…Damien Hirst….

  154. There is one writer who all Italians like – even the ones who don’t like him.

If you mean living authors – no. I rarely read modern literature. Of relatively recent authors, I could point to Montale.

  155. Damien Hirst…yes another one..Poliziano you are being shown up now.

  156. Thank god for Frank……..

  157. missing all the up and coming females like myself but still….DG seems keyed up….

  158. I’m not familiar with the work of the Camden artists posse. If you say it’s good, I’ll have to believe you.

I mainly like old things. The famous names in modern British art just make me laugh – or sometimes make me want to imitate the work of the piss artists discussed earlier.

  159. David Hockney and Lucien Freud are old things…

  160. The scouserettes scored. 1-1, 5-2 on aggregate.

  161. darn…..how many minutes left?

  162. Constable and Turner are well appreciated ….

  163. How long is left?

  164. I would suggest Dambudzo Marechera, the African anarchist Ateeb. His book ‘House of Hunger’. Apart from that Chinua Achebe, the grand old man of African writing.

  165. The little Scouser scamps are looking stronger right now. But then it’s about that period in the game when Jay Emmanuel Thomas usually gets going and starts to dominate games.

  166. Am trying to watch the game but the feed is not saying much.

  167. 30 mins Pz.

  168. The feed is pretty crap for real but better than nothing!

  169. I like Turner, and I don’t claim there has never been a good english artist; but I think it’s fair to say that the art of England cannot compare with its literature – just as the literature of Italy (Dante excepted) cannot compare with its art.

  170. I’m trying to guess who it is, the author all Italians like. Dante? Machiavelli?

  171. Sunu is a terror, isnt he?

  172. Dante! We don’t need to read Machiavelli. Everything he recommends is in our blood from birth.

  173. Rhys Murphy comes on

  174. 6-2 here we go………

  175. Ole Gunner,

Cant you see we are having a debate about art and literature, stop trying to change the subject back to football please…

  176. JET gives it away and almost gives away a goal….and just as I was typing that,

2-1 Arsenal. Own goal from Ayala who’s been a veritable dirtly little Scamp and deserves the misery.

  177. Who scored?

  178. Wilshere almost scores…

  179. By the way Maria do you work with sprays???

  180. Good play from Ince jr for Liverpool.

  181. Is Umberto Eco a respected writer in Italy? Maybe for his essays. He has a big name internationally.

  182. Jay Emmanuel Thomas and Tom Cruise subbed. On comes Evina and Henderson

  183. Is the cup presented today OG?

  184. Scouser curntette almost took Coquelin’s head off. Horrible challenge!

  185. Thats a red card, he meant to do that!

  186. silver gunner

well done the kids, i like sanshez watt he looks like a decent prospect in amongst the usuals, an for the opposition dela valle looks a real prospect.

  187. 4 mins of added time.

Maria, not sure but I think so.

  188. silver gunner

    6-2 agg win lovely.

  189. It’s won…..!

    6-2 on aggregate

  190. Champions…..Champions….Champions….

  191. Well done lads!

  192. Wonderful!

  193. When the players came around to lift the trophy it’s striking how young they are….

  194. League and Cup double!!

  195. It’s so lovely to see. They’re so happy. So fresh, so young, so much potential….

    I hope they
    all make it…

  196. …I guess it depends upon your definition of art….high-born Brits have been talking up Italian art for centuries…another way of shutting out the plebs….only these days the genie is well and truly out of the fucking bottle….

  197. I hope so OG….Bould deserves credit too…credit to AFC……

  198. …excellent performances from the u-18s…

    …Arsenal….

  199. A lot of art of the Italian renaissance was produced specifically to communicate with “plebs,” so there is no question of trying to shut anyone out.

  200. “Is Umberto Eco a respected writer in Italy?”

Yes, I suppose so – as well respected as any writer is today. I can’t really speak for a whole country. I respect him, but I don’t plan to start reading his books.

  201. silver gunner

wow listeneing to liam brady blatantly say wilshire should be in the first team, micheal thomas eluding that he should have played ahead of some of our current 1st team this term.

  202. silver gunner

hope to see him pushing the likes of diaby and denilson for that midfield place.

  203. On Setanta Mickey T says Wilshere is better than the likes of Song and should be playing.

    ‘Ere we go again….

  204. silver gunner

ole dont you think wilshire should have had a bit more first team exposure this year? I dont want to knock song because along with bentdner he is one of our most improved players.

  205. silver gunner,

You can’t have it both ways. One minute the team lacks too much experience. next minute the youngest players should have played more.

  206. Song and Wilshere, thats no comparison though is it? Wilshere could never play the position that Song does, no?

I would agree that Wilshere is great but lets give the boy time.

  207. He’s still a growing lad. The rigours of regular play in the Premier League could be bad for him.

  208. I agree PZ and if he doesnt live up to expectations quickly he will be abused by “ARSENAL SUPPORTERS” just like Walcott was!

  209. Paul N,

Exactly. I think Wilshere will be world class. I don’t think Song will be so. He’ll play at the very top levels but not be world class.

But right now, Jack is 17 and has a whole lot to learn. Let him learn it, and don’t start any stupid hype right now.

Wenger brought Gibbs through. And he’ll bring Jack through in due time.

  210. Wenger is responsible for Wilshere, and has to take his interests into account.

  211. Thats it OG.

You never know about Song either, he too is very young and may become a very special player at his position. He looked great in the ANC didnt he and has played well this season.

  212. There was a reason Jack did not play more – being young he lost form for a while and Arsene sent him back to play against his own age group as part of his development. I think Arsene knows what’s best for Jack Wilshere’s development rather than external commenters who show their ignorance by suggesting that he should play instead of a DM! He will get his chance when the time is right, so there is no sense rushing him. People need to remember that he was up against players around his age, which is very different to playing under pressure in the PL.

  213. In an interview after the match Bould, when asked if Wilshire would soon be in the 1st team, Jack has not had his best season.

  214. add some ” ” ‘s please.

  215. Apparently he went badly off the boil for a while Steve, and it’s only recently that he has come back to form.

  216. 4th the target

Wilshere? I thought you always fancy foreign players claiming they’re better than English lads so why Wilshere?

  217. He went off the boil, had some disciplinary problems that needed fixing, and had some injuries.

  218. The youngsters did really well to win tonight. I went to Friday’s game and it was really men against boys, we had a goal disallowed and they should have had 2/3 players sent off.

    The future looks very bright.

  219. Wilshere’s a great player. Strong enough at 16 to play at the top level. Comfortable with both legs. Good dribbler. Great vision. Wondeful passer. Good enough stamina at 16. Fearless. Great shot on him. Fast learner. Apparently his game has gotten dramatically better every 6 months (even if this season seemed like the one where he went off the boil a bit).

For me genius is effortlessness. Those ones who do things very well and all the while it looks effortless.

  220. Watch out….that’s the start….

  221. 4th The Target,

    LMAO.

What are you whingeing about ??? He’s bloody english. Stop moaning !!! The most ludicrous post by any blogger in the whole of the blogosphere.

  222. 4th the target

Wilshere and Coquelin are better than Denilson and Song.

In fact, Denilson should be watching the games of Coquelin to learn a few tricks. Passing beyond 5 yards, tackling, shooting, tracking back and positioning in front of the back 4.

Coquelin (French) and Frimpong (Ghana-born English) is far better than Denilson but for their age. Coquelin and Frimpong will be the players who’ll send both Song and denilson packing back home.

  223. What is one to say to that?

  224. G4E,
You often have an appropriate response.

  225. 4th The Target,

Absolutely, Coquelin is so good that he is able to track back even before he ventures foward. He has extra sensory perception and is able to discern an “attacking wave” that is triggered in the minds of the opposition.

Frimpong has Ghanian witch doctor properties. He is able to cast a spell on the opposition so that they freeze as he glides past them with his magic.

  226. What happened to crafty?:S

I’m still alive, I’m just in the midst of my finals at university. Nice to know my absence is being noticed!!

  227. 4tt, If you put Denilson and Song in the reserves they would run through the other reserves teams.

Wenger must be the dumbest manager going, that he would just leave these players in the reserves, knowing fully that they were ready for the PL.

    Get real.

  228. Does any one notice that Howard disappeard?

It seems like he blew up and now we have like little Howards everywhere….

  229. Sorry, I meant Howard er.. Coward.

  230. There are other great prospects in the team. I saw Coquelin in pre-season and at one of the open-days. He’s a born tackler. He just puts his leg out, draws it back in with the ball stuck to it. 17 years old, and he stood out playing against much older, more experienced and stronger opponents.

I then saw his DVD in France, and he just tackles and tackles. He has an amazing engine. He’s very no-nonsense as well. Very serious, willing to fight and scrap.

He’s strong. He’s a very good passer of the ball. has a good shot, very good understanding of tactics.

The only reason he isn’t featuring for the first team is that he’s 17 years old.

I don’t understand why so many compare him to Makelele. Makelele can’t pass. Coquelin can.

I think Coquelin will be world class.

Jay Emmanuel Thomas will make it. He’s just a superb leader, a brave kid who just has the innate ability to execute. He’s a get-it-done guy. Jay, is the kind of player we should keep even if his ability doesn’t qualify him, his other attributes do.

  231. I try Poliziano…I try :)

  232. AIC’s been scarce also?

  233. Howard….

    Howard….

    where have you gone ????

  234. 4th the target

    Ole Gunner

I’m happy you’ve observed Coquelin play. We have a great Arsenal DM prospect in our hands, a future world class DM.

Really, Denilson and Song need to watch Coquelin play. His tackling, range of passing, positioning and his resilience and fearlessness will serve both Song and Denilson well.

Frimpong and Coquelin for me in two years time. Watch the two boys man the DM position in 2011.

  235. ahh…. Howard is back.

    The great DOOM prospect.

Howard, occupying the main DOOM position in 2011.

  236. 4TT,

Why don’t you also just acknowledge the obvious talent of Denilson and Song?

  237. I expect AIC is on holiday. Howard is now Patrick, and perhaps 4th the target as well.

  238. Howard clearly has many faces!

  239. Thierry – you owe it to us to keep the Mancs from the trophy!

  240. “Howard clearly has many faces!”
    - and all of them ugly, and no doubt white.

  241. Who would have thunk it? The pusher beat 55 aces! There is hope left!

  242. It’s like a drama series, we can call it

“The Many Ugly Faces of Howard” Or
“Ugly Petty & the Seven Howards” Or
    “Howard is thicker than Pharts”

  243. …..or howard investigated.

… or howard club….which is like fight club…with the split personalites….but sh**

  244. We have won a trophy!

  245. Hi Pz, sorry I have just got back in. I know nothing of the reason or effect of Italian art upon Italian people. However I don’t think that classical Italian art, for example of the Rennaissance petiod was produced to communicate with British plebs. In fact there was always an exclusivity about it in this country. Grand tours and all that. In fact the twin ant trails of religion and money seem to be at the root of it.

  246. To break through into the first team regularly Jack Wilshere is up against Cesc Fabregas, Andrei Arshavin, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey. It is certainly not true that he could have replaced Denilson and Song this year. But there should aways be competition for places and I look forward to him pushing for his place over the next season or two.

  247. Ade pledges future to Arsenal.

“I have always said I’m happy here, I’m tired of saying it,” Adebayor said. “This team has a future and this year we went a step further than we have done in the past in the Champions League, we’re progressing. I don’t know what Wenger thinks. He has always had confidence in me, he is aware of my qualities.

“He is the one who takes decisions and for sure if he tells me that he does not count on me anymore, then I will search for a new team, but if he wants me to stay I will. Besides, I will have to stay because I am under contract. In any case I am grateful to Arsenal because they have made me who I am and that is why I will always continue here.”

  248. The 3 founts of D&G wisdom
    1. If he used to play for us he is part of our glorious past
    2. If he is English and will play for us in future he is part of our glorious future
    3. If he is French, African, disturbingly foreign, under 25 and plays for us now, he is part of our inglorious present

  249. The D&G mantra

I support Arsenal. I give AW one more year of begrudging, half-hearted recognition (maybe). My support is always conditional. I know better.

    Repeat 20 times a day.

  250. Who cares if Song or Denilson will be world class? You need a 22 man squad, and not all of them need to be world class. Park Ji-Sung, O’Shea, and Fletcher are not world class players. Neither were Grimaldi or Parlour. But they did the job when required, and were versatile. You don’t need 22 galaticos, you need a proper squad, which is what we lack. I would happy for Denilson and Song to stay for 5 years, because if anything, they will bring their experience and familiarity of the team when the next batch of youngsters go.

  251. A piece on Xavi Hernandez in today’s Independent:

“…the midfielder played 254 passes throughout the tournament at an 89 per cent success rate.

There was a time when his allergy to giving the ball away counted against him. Xavi was criticised when the club went two years without winning a trophy for veering on the side of caution and playing too many safe passes.”

    God, that sounds very familiar!

  252. Massive congratulations to the Youth Cup squad, well done Gunners we are so proud of you.

It was so great to see them lift the trophy yesterday. If they hadn’t scheduled the match for a bleedin’ weekday, I would’ve travelled up there. Anfield looked empty compared to the first leg at the Grove, but the travelling Gooners made sure they were heard, and the “respect to the ninety six” flag was a nice touch of dignity to keep things in perspective.

I’m starting to worry that i’m enjoying watching this youth team more than the first team! Their defending is superb, always defending as a team and getting on the end of every header that comes their way. When they go forward there’s always so much options, every player in the team can contribute something creative. Winning this cup will get that winning spirit into their blood, but they’ve won it so easily that they’re going to need some fresh new challenges quickly. Next season I expect to see a lot of Wilshere, Coquelin, JET, Lansbury and Watt in the Carling Cup. Eastmond, Bartley, Ayling and Cruise need to bolster their size and strength, play more in the reserves and perhaps go out on loans.

I know Wenger must be just as excited about them as we are. One thing which defines them is that they’re not just a randomly essembled group of strangers who just happen to be good at football, they are a unit and have been playing together for a long time. I’d rather see them carrying on making progress like that, rather than being broken up selectively player-by-player, but obviously at some point it will happen. It should be very interesting to see how Wenger will gradually blend them in to the first team.
