Media Flip Flops, Kolo and Surfer Dude

We can be brave again, stand up you fools

- We Can Be Brave Again, The Armoury Show

And standing up is certainly what appears to be happening, according to media reports yesterday. The previously quiet majority are making their views heard and it seems, notice is being taken. Without a hint of irony, the same pundits who were critical of the squad after the encounters with Chelsea and Manchester United, are launching a defence of the manager, whilst failing to acknowledge their part in fuelling the flames.

C’est la vie. Still, if Arsene was feeling life was swinging back in his favour, he can always rely on some former player to deliver a swift blow below the belt. Johan Cruyff is never knowingly unheard:

Barcelona have a lot of home-grown players in the team..I would like to see a candidate [at the European parliament elections] pick up on the 6+5 idea and fight to change the law on this. That way, the national teams would be improved. As a consequence, you’d also stop the trafficking of children – thousands of footballing hopefuls that are taken from poor countries and of whom only a tiny proportion make it.

I had not realised that the Dutchman and Michel Platini were such good friends. Indeed, their words are so ludicrous and interchangable that the pair are in danger of morphing into one entity. Presumably Cruyff was thinking of those well-regarded Catalans Alves, Toure, Keita, Eto’o, Henry, Marques and Messi when making his statement, whilst admiring their compatriots Gudjohnsen and Hleb on the bench. To try to portray themselves as Champions of the Impoverished is disingenuous when they take South American youngsters to their factory farm in Barcelona.

Moving on from that, Kolo Toure has promised that the squad will come back stronger next season:

There is still some work to do and we are such a young team, are improving and I hope that when one trophy comes, a lot will then follow.

In a nutshell, I think that is the mental barrier that contributes to some of the team’s problem performances. Cesc, Toure, Arshavin and Gallas are, I believe, the only players who have won honours with their clubs – I think Clichy may have a PL medal from The Invincibles – but even if there are one or two others, you get my drift. The players believe that they can win silverware but they, for the most part, do not know it. Once that happens, I suspect Toure’s hope may well come true.

Having had his lover’s tiff with the club in the autumn of last year, the Ivorian is firmly dedicating himself to the future:

There is still time on my contract and I hope the club will show that they need me. When you love somebody it’s important that they love you back. I have loved this club for years and I always give everything for the team

It is hard to question Toure’s efforts but even he has admitted his performance levels were not meeting his high standards during the opening phase of this season and the latter quarter of last. No doubt his personal relationship with Gallas contributed. Question marks remain over the pairing when dealing with aerial challenges but Toure’s performances whilst the Frenchman has been out should put doubts in Arsene’s mind as to who is his first choice centre back.

Manuel Almunia has been speaking with a Spanish football magazine, Don Balon. It has come into the British media domain and is being reasonably fairly reported for once, probably because there was little controvesy in his words. He touched on the defensive frailties but felt that the team had to become a tad tougher:

We need more consistency. And perhaps more experience, not in age, but in certain aspects of the game in which we must be a little ‘more bad’ in inverted commas, to play other teams at their own game, being a little more `nasty’ as they say in England. Controlling the ball well is not always easy, on each pitch we must learn to adapt our game to the circumstances

Nobody can deny the adaptability issue but I suspect that being nastier is a borderline issue. Certainly there are times when a more robust approach may be needed but we seem to have the measure of teams like Blackburn and Bolton and are capable of beating them the Arsenal way rather than reverting to type.

Almunia was, on the whole, complimentary about English football, believing that more teams play the game but is in no doubt that the Spanish national team has benefitted from their players coming over here, toughening Torres, Cesc and Alonso up.

He also gave an insight into the mentality of the Spanish players and their long-term intentions:

I believe that all the Spanish players that play in the Premier League want, someday, to return to Spain, but I do not know if it is to play. I, personally, want to enjoy soccer level to the maximum until my body gives in

On a personal level, I can relate to that from Mrs YW’s family; the draw of home is certainly a strong one. And let’s face it, when you play for a club with a vocal minority of the support who are ungracious – to be polite, the hangover must be fading – who can blame any of them for thinking of home?

  1. Good post. We have done better than expected, but not quite as well as we could have, but some think it’s the end of the world.

ManUre might deserve to be the champions, because the table doesn’t lie, but worthy winners they were not. Liverpool have played the best football, albeit not the most consistent, what with their bout of Arsenalitis. They beat ManU twice, including that stonking 4-1 win at OT after giving them a 1 goal head-start, and since their inexplicable 2-0 reverse to the mighty Middlesborough, haven’t lost a game, dropped a point or conceeded more than 1 goal. The glaring exception is the 4-4 draw at Anfield. ManU were lucky that Liverpool slipped up this season, just as we did the previous one. Credit to ManU for being able to capitalise, because they have been ruthlessly efficient. 15 single goal wins, 9 of which were 1-0, is testament to that. But you’re not going to hear about boring boring Utd. Their only worthy title of the last three really was depriving Mourinho in 2007. I’m not going to devote another word to them, or I will be accused of sour grapes, surfice it to say that if they win they CL I’m going to put a pound – anyone who knows which bookies give the best odds – on them not winning another English league title for the next 20 years. Ring a bell?

How any real Arsenal fan can want Wenger to go or be replaced is beyond me. That’s another reason why I’m glad the title and the top half of the table is settled. They would have definitely got a point at Hull anyway. This allows us to focus on the relegation battle. Any two of 4 from those Northeast clubs will go down. If the Toons and the Mackems go down, they take a total of 10 English league titles with them. That’s more than Chelscum, the Spuds, Leeds and Forest put together. See a pattern?

Those who wish Wenger gone, should be careful what they wish for. He is our most successful manager ever. He has kept us punching above our weight consistently in the top 4 when we have seen the best ManU, Chelscum and Liverpool teams for years. He has given us memories that even those teams can only dream off. I’m not saying he doesn’t make mistakes – as much as I wished he didn’t – but some of the slack he has taken this season is really perverse. I’ve been lucky enough to start supporting the Gunners in their best 2 decades of their entire history. But I’ve done my homework and look at the barren seasons and wondered at times if we’d ever seen them again. Fans who saw them win the league title in ‘53 and then had to live through 18 absolutely barren years till the double in ‘71 will understand this. Then another 18 years before the next league title in ‘89 with sporadic cup honours sprinkled here and there. I’m sure real Liverpool fans understand as well. Since then, we have really been spoiled by George and Arsene. Didn’t look so rosy when Georgie got done though, did it?

We’ve celebrated St Tott’s every single one of Arsene’s years with Arsenal and they’re supposed to have replaced us for 4 seasons running now. And yet just 5 barren years without a league title or honours (I’m not counting the cheap 0-0 2005 FA Cup penalty win where we were outplayed over 120 mins) and we can’t stop bleating. Get a grip Gooners! That’s how long some teams spend in the lower divisions before they come up again. Yes, I want to be as successful as Liverpool and ManU have been, but it doesn’t come overnight and certainly not without a price. Wenger is the best man to do it, whether he actually does or not is another matter. But mark my words, if he goes, we will not win another title for the next 5 years. So for flip’s sake, be grateful for what we have, give Arsene his due credit and lets follow him wherever it is he takes us.

Still not convinced, fine. For all the ingratitude that he has received, a perverse part of me actually wants him to iron out a 10m euro a year deal with Real for five years, with the 50m guaranteed if they sack him. If he’s got to take so much stick, he might as well get paid for it, sell his principles and milk his reputation for all it is worth. Remember he doesn’t owe anyone anything. Imagine he did go to Real, who would you replace him with? Exactly!

  2. Cruyff is one of my heroes. But I just don’t get some of the silliness.

I am quite sure that if he’d played for a Barcelona team in which irrespective of form, or ability, the Spanish players had to play he’d have left and he’d have found it despicable.

  3. Alex Ice Cream

I definitely think that this team could be a bit nastier if necessary.

  4. YW

100% agree… you cannot blame any of the players that think about returning home. Seeing your team mates booed, moaned and groaned at, seeing the manager being called names left right and center, playing in front of thousands of spoilt brats, and playing in front of fans that dont believe in you!! You cant blame them!

I know there is a large portion of fans which are supportive and very much with Wenger and the team.. we have an abundance of quality and im with them all the way – every single one of them who put on the shirt! But some fans our spoiling our great club and turning us into a laughing stock. Embarassed our manager, and made all of us supporters look shyte basically.

    Enough is enough.

Happy Gooner, Santino are prime examples of embarassment

  5. AIC

Yes i believe that too.. I think thats why Song was such a hit for us… Denilson is a decent DM but not the nasty type who will just dive head 1st into a challenge.

Wenger knows we are a bit lightweight, next year they will be naturally better equipped and i think the only way is up from here. We cant harm there chances by getting someone more robust to help with the rougher games and grabbing hold of games. Like Song has done.

  6. ‘The trouble is chkmiaot, all fans are being tarred by the same brush when they are actually a small, but noisy minority.’

that passenal is the sad truth…

  7. Can’t agree about Liverpool playing the best football, at the Emirates they resorted to a Wimbledon style up and under and couldn’t break us down when we were down to 10 men and list Cesc. They have played with passion at times though. I don’t buy the Liverpool for the title next year rubbish you could have said the same about us last year, Gerrard is 30 and Torres has always been injury prone they have not won anything for 3 years compared to our 4 why should next season be any different to this?

As for the 6+5, AW has been preparing for this for the last few years. Gibbs is just the tip of the iceberg and those which attend the youth cup 1st leg on friday will see the strength of the club’s future, most are also English which could create a problem for those lazy hacks which beat AW with a stick over his foreign bias.

  8. goonerpanther, great post. That is exactly the kind of perspective that supporters could do with.

  9. goonerpanther & vivb

With you both all the way.. i always wondered about liverpool this season, they have a good midfield, and solid defence, but they lacked the firepower to finish off games when need be. Although they have scored the most goals, they didnt have the options at top, when Torres was injured there is no one you can rely on as an out and and striker. Kuyt and co done their part but they aint got no where near a sqaud like ours is turning into.

We have depth in every position, 3 LB’s for example… Traore, Gibbs, Clichy and even SIlvestre.

Their sub left back is sub standard, cant remember his name.

Anyway i wont ramble on about the Scouse, all i will say is that good times await for our team if they stick together under Wenger.

  10. Alex Ice Cream

    chris,

Yes, especially since referees have made it quite clear that they will not gives us the protection that we need. Maybe this is why we are picking up more injuries than other teams.

Mike Dean who is an complete and utter c*** did not waste any time dishing out the yellow cards when any of our players even looked at ManU’s players in a threatening manner.

  11. to doomers saying this…..

‘Give me the ADE of last season and I am happy

I acknowledge he had a number of niggling injuries, that his confidence got lowered

but then he hid a little, felt sorry for himself

Not what an Arsenal player should do –

But if he does what a true Arsenal player should do and go to Wengers Office and tell him – I will stay and repay your faith and this contract, I will be happy to have him

But Wengers recent comments are ominous. He looks to have reached a conclusion that ADE is a disruptive influence and he has to be sold for the sake of teh squad and unity

It is hard not to also reach that viewpint when you hear his murmurings of love toward Milan’

    we say this…

Give Arsenal the supporters of last season and we are happy

We acknowledge we’ve had a number of disappointing results, that your confidence got lowered

but then you hid a little, felt sorry for yourself

Not what an Arsenal supporter should do –

But if you do what true Arsenal supporters would do and go to Wengers Office and tell him – We will stay and repay your faith and this vow of support – Arsenal will be happy to have you

But Wengers recent comments are ominous. He looks to have reached a conclusion that your doom and gloom is a disruptive influence and you have to be gotten rid for the sake of the squad and Arsenal

It is hard not to also reach that viewpint when you hear your murmurings of hate toward Arsenal.

  12. @goonerpanther

    Thanks for the mini post!

Makes for good reading along with the original post by YW.

Excellent stuff by YW as usual.

  13. all hail goonerpanther :D

perspective is definitely needed, we are bombarded with so much negativity, I get so annoyed when the media have the audacity to say to wenger oh so that’s four years without a trophy, (really, you think he doesn’t know that?!?!)

as for utd, wasn’t it around 30 years before they won their first title under fergie? 11 of the 18 titles won are from the scot who lets face as much as he deserves credit, has enjoyed an enormous amount of luck. how he didn’t get the sack after failing to win the title for 3 years in a row is beyond me…anyway I suppose those utd fans who were moaning then aren’t certainly now.

  14. goonerpanther… gr8 post…

  15. Good blog, YW.
Some journalists and ex-footballers are so two-faced!

It IS about that first trophy, Toure’s right. Even the kids winning the Carling Cup would open the floodgates.

    ******
    Nice posts, goonerpanther and Vivb.

    ****
    @Chrisgoona

Trouble is, the refs have it in for us, and getting nastier could result in more yellow cards and dismissals and missing players at crucial times…

    ******
(this is a reposting from the previous blog)

    @Malaysiangunner

“Fungunner , while I can answer you why Cesc situation with Barca and Ade is different I will not get into it. No point.”

It wasn’t Barca, it was Real Madrid. So go on, explain. You’ve obviously got the time, since you’re posting here this morning. May I suggest that you know deep down that it’s no different, but you just like Cesc and you don’t like Adebayor and that’s all it is.

  16. @ chkmiaot at 12:12pm
    lol – very good!

  17. …well done, YW…amazing how effective the hair of the dog can be…

  18. ….great comments, goonerpanther, vivb, chkmiaot,chrisgoona….

  19. Nice one YW and even mind blowing by Goonerpanther

Its important to look at the wider picture because things can only get better. A great man once said that “an honest difference is a sign that we are making progress” Some of Wenger’s answers in Q&A session shows a man who loves this club and, knows that things can only improve. At least, Gazidis and Wenger had a meeting yesterday and, i hope our expected signings will come in in good time.

  20. Gunner From Nigeria

The club is in good hands… they only want what is best for the club.

We should feel lucky to have people like this associated with Arsenal FC.

The fans need to realise this, Wenger aint gonna demand the board for 50m each year and destroy a few youngsters and the club financially just to give in to public demand. Wenger is building something greater than instant success…

you have to hold your hands up to United… and good luck to them repaying the debts. We will see how confident they are of they reserve and youth setup against Hull.

  21. Top posts on here today! Let’s keep the momentum going. It never ceases to amaze me that people who dare call themselves supporters expect, yes expect, trophies every year.
Even those who would justify their whingeing by prefacing remarks with “I’ve been a season ticket holder for 30 years and this is the worst Arsenal team I’ve ever seen.” You know who you are. As Goonerpanther say, get a f$cking grip! Support the team!

I, for one, am always happy because I know we have one of the best coaches in the world, a system that I can believe in and one that I admire, world class talent, and we play the beautiful game full stop.

  22. Gris Gris

Generally most Arsenal fans believe in them, its just that small proportion which happen to get infected with the media poison that is part of our lives day in day out.

There are also fans who aint supporters who dont actually offer any support to the club. I have cousins who slate and are willing to bad mouth my club left right and centre, they dont watch every game, only the games they feel like. They claim to be Arsenal fans, i told them a few weeks ago you aint Arsenal fans if you think in this manner. They wasn’t too pleased with me, but i felt i had to say something to bring them down to earth.

I have never let anyone say anything that will possible harm my team or club in any form, and i will support them no matter what. That is my role… if i cant fulfill that then i will feel like im letting down my club. So to all those who are willingly to just spray crap out their mouths about their “team”/”club”… you know deep down you are a sh** supporter.

  23. Terence McGovern

Cryff and platini have some nerve. They forget that Barcelona bought a 13 year old Lionel Messi from his home club in Argentina.

Correct me if I am wrong but 13 is a lot younger than the average age of the youth players that Arsenal offers contracts to.

Biased crroks the pair of them.

  24. Actually, on a serious note:

“As a consequence, you’d also stop the trafficking of children – thousands of footballing hopefuls that are taken from poor countries and of whom only a tiny proportion make it.”

This issue that Cruyff spoke is about is actually a serious one and I remember it being reported in a British newspaper a year or two ago. We’re not responsible for it of course, but it’s just a consequence of the highly globalised player market that the likes of Wenger pioneered. But in no way do I blame him for the highly opportunistic, exploitative and unethical behaviour of others.

  25. @AusGunner, it’s all to do with greedy conmen, and charlatans, posing as agents, in order to make some money.

FIFA should ask themselves why it’s so easy for anyone to be a football agent. Even in the UK all it costs is £250 and to pass a relatively simple test.

Sepp, Platini and co, then have the temerity to blame the premier league for trafficking of players , while casting a blind eye to all the Africans in France, Brazillians in Portugal, and Argentinans in Spain and Italy.

  26. What’s this child trafficking crap? If Barcelona offered my son a place in their academy, and I decided to move my family their to give the boy a chance, what have I done wrong?

And what have Barcelona done wrong? Where’s the moral dilemma?

  27. FIFA don’t care about football. They don’t give half of a flying feck.

Once I was in the Central African Republic (don’t ask what I was doing there) and I came across an NBA (American basketball) clinic organised for youths there. FIFA doesn’t care about that kind of stuff.

I bet it never occured to Blatter and co that African football has no hope of competing with Europe. The gap in resources is to be measured in light years. The ability of African footballers to dream of careers in Europe is good for football. Eto’o would not be the player he is if he spent his career at Tonerre Kalala.

And does FIFA try to divert resources into developing promising youth and local level football in Africa and Asia? NO.

The export of footballers to Europe is a main source of forex for Brazil.

What they are afraid of is that club football is starting to become a bigger franchise, a bigger money machine than international football.

It’s a direct threat to their pockets and their corrupt networks of agents, refs, administrators, contractors and various crooks.

  28. There’s a piece in one of the papers today claiming that Liverpool are putting together a deal for Tevez worth £50 million. This shows just how moronic most if the sports journalists are. Liverpool have to refinance £350 million in defaulted loans by July. I am sure that they will spend some money in the summer but I have a feeling that the bulk of this could come from sales. The problem with this for Liverpool is that Benitez is a cheque book manager, he buys high and sells low. He’s already lost £8 million in 6 months on Keane, Torres and Gerrard aside how many in the Liverpool squad are worth real money? Alonso and Mascarano (Please excuse the spelling!) maybe. Unless Liverpool manage to get a buyer who can feed the never ending cash demands of Benitez, Liverpool are in trouble.

  29. Alex Ice Cream

    Ole,

Club football financially is already bigger than international football and with the exception of the 1 month every 4 years that is the World Cup, club football is bigger in other ways as well.

In terms of quality of teams it is a similar story with the top champions league teams being able to easily beat all but the best international teams.

Even the best international teams would struggle to beat the best CL teams.

As you say club football is a threat, it is the enemy as it has successfully challenged the primacy of FIFAs product which is international football.

International football is generally really, really dull. Inflated qualifying groups, friendlies that result in nothing more than money for FIFA and boring tournaments. The last decent WC was in 1986.

  30. Ole Gunner – Agree with you 100%. I sure that Viera has a charity he runs in Senegal and there are other African players who are taking the wealth they have earned in Europe and putting back into their native countries.

  31. AIC – Agree with you as well. This is why FIFA and UEFA are trying to curb club football.

  32. AIC,

Sometimes I have to say that I think international football is already dead. People just dont care anymore.

My proposal to get it to rile people’s interest again is to say only amateurs can play for their countries. For some reason I like that idea a lot.

  33. AIC

Dunno about the last decent World Cup – 1990 might challenge it. You tend to find the majority of the matches are tedious with half a dozen good ones.

    YW

  34. Just read a article in which Balague is raving about Mata….21 year old with 11 goals this season. Recommending him to Arsenal.

We have our 4th choice striker who’s scored 14 or 15 at 20 and he’s getting stick.

Elsewhere a 21 year old who scores 11 is raved about. At the Arsenal these days a 20 year old who gets 15 in 27 starts is a failure and hate figure!

  35. Kolo also has a charity.. With Yaya they must be doing good things.

The child-trafficking (assuming he meant it ‘that’ way) is just weird.

Ex- footballers… set up charities/ run pubs and shut up, plz.

Read a nice fact about Sir Alf Ramsey in the Guardian.. He waited until the stadium (’66) was empty – then did a lap of honour… Also, a classic quote : “Managers get too much credit when they win, and too much crap(?) when they don’t”.

  36. Ah, a peaceful day with many a good post written today chaps.

Where have all the D&G’s gone?

Sad news about Eduardo though, lets hope this turns into a recurring theme, and the boy is back for the start of the season.

  37. Alex Ice Cream

    Marc,

Benitez is a joke in the transfer market. Anyone with money and a modicum of footballing knowledge could have bought Mascherano, Alonso, Torres and Reina. Gerrard and Carragher were there when he joined. The other additions are distinctly both expensive and average or worse; Kuyt, Pennant, Arbeloa, Dossena, Insua, Keane, Babbel the list goes on.

This is why the issue of transfer control was holding up Rafa’s contract talks. I think Lpool will struggle without more signings. Their finances are in trouble as you say with the RBS loan and they could well need to sell but will have to do so at a loss. Even Torres (and Babbel) were financed by a loan.

I know I want Wenger to make more signings but I wouldn’t want a chequebook manager at all as this is not a long-term strategy.

  38. Malaysiangunner

    Fungunner

Since you insist. Did Cecs agitate for aamove like Ade? did Cesc say pay up or else? Did agent go all over the shop to whore himself, if not Milan then Real, then some one else?
Did Cesc say since I repaced Viera I should be paid like Viera?
Didi any of it get dragged over the whole summer? No the whole episode did not make the as much and it was snuffed out within weeks by public declaration of Cesc that he will stay.
Ade dragged and dragged the issue, had a public campaign by his agent , he saying one thing in one interview and that afternoon saying another thing.
Now that you have brought all these memories , may be he should go the money grabbing mercenary. If he had really replaced TH 14 he should have kept up with TH14 in scoring, tht will be minimally 60 over 2 seasons.
He has no love for the club, no where near Cesc. If Cesc was as focused on money as Ade, I am sure RM can make him an offer he can not refuse.
Now there is the difference , Cesc knows how to garteful to The Arsenal and to Arsene. I no for one minute think that Ade is anywhere near there.

Like I said this is not edifying.

    Up The Arse!!!

  39. Malaysiangunner

I do not for one minute think that Ade

  40. Matt – Whats happened to Eduardo?

  41. AIC – My take on Benitez’s contract was that he wanted full control of the budget. The press reported that he wanted the ability to spend whatever he chose. No club is going to give a manager this, especially one as trigger happy as Benitez.

If we are correct about Liverpool’s financial state, how long into next season will it be before Benitez starts to blame the board and lack of money for any bad results?

    I guessing 1st week September.

  42. ..Eduardo has taken the opporunity to have a minor operation to complete the ankle treatment he underwent after the break….occasionally it is a good idea to reduce some of the bone or scar tissue around the break…or even remove some of the screws….the time taken to recover will be the same as the impact groin injury he suffered so there will be no extra delay in his recovery….he will be in training with the squad for a full pre-season…

  43. Marc

That assumes that he is still at Liverpool. Now Wenger has re-affirmed his intention to at least see out this contract, there will no doubt be a plethora of stories about Rafa to Real.

    YW

  44. YW,

I really see Rafa at Real Madrid. The one thing not in his column is that he doesnt really have a reputation for creating teams that are great to watch which is one thing they value at the Bernabau.

It just seems inevitable he’ll go there at some point. There’s a dearth of top managerial talent. He came out of their youth system, and he’s managed their reserves and youth teams.

Seems inevitable that he’ll go there sometime. But I think he’ll want to win the Premier League, though if you ask me, he’ll never win it.

  45. Frank beat me to it Marc – a small op on his ankle…

  46. Malaysian

Come on man, we’re all dying of expectation for you to finish your 4.32pm post. I’m a bit concerned that it might be a long one though since it’s taken more than half an hour to type! A magnum opus indeed.

    YW

  47. I thought Spain winning the World Cup was the best thing that happened in football? It wasn’t that they were just technically good or small, they were very clever in their movement, balance, shielding, positioning etc.

When Denilson came on against Chelsea we were much better. Song’s strength wasn’t as needed because players like Cesc, Nasri, RVP and to a degree Walcott like to use their above mentioned skills that Spain excelled in.

Look at Barcelona. Possession was the new defence (as was pressure) but small players with bundles of quality which ensured they weren’t bullied.

It’s when teams play a direct game, then that’s the bigger problem. Being organised as they disrupt play at every opportunity.

  48. Malaysiangunner

    YW

Very glad to see that Dudu wil most likely recover in time for the next season. I am predicting that he will be our top gun next season if fully fit. Arsh and Cesc will present him will all the chances in the world. Once every one is back fit Ros included we have a lethal strike force with goals coming from many players. That I am very confident. We just need to defend better but that is ad nausuem by now.

    Up the Arse!!!

  49. Malasia Gunner,

Ade was injured a fair chunk of the season.

    TH14 didn’t score 30 goals every season.

If Ade had been fit all season he’d have played 50-60 games. With his goal per game ratio of about 0.5 this season we’d expect that he’d have 25-30 goals this season.

  50. Malaysiangunner

Now that I read it again,it is full or errors both typo and grammar.

Just the emotions I suppose. Your sarcasm is not lost on me. I will stop commenting on Ade as is not healthy for me nor those reading. Lets see if he wants to stay.

    We are the Arsenal

  51. .

  52. Thanks for the news on Eduardo everyone. Let’s hope that this gets him ready for next season.

Re: Benitez. I don’t think he’ll leave Liverpool without an excuse. He just doesn’t have the balls. Give it a couple of months and he might get one “Lack of support from the board, look at all the money ManU Chelsea and Arsenal spend”.

If / when he does go to Madrid I can’t see him lasting, they just won’t accept his brand of football and he won’t have the excuse of lack of spending.

TH 14 started with about 24 per game and then moved to over 30. But he did not earn 80,000 per wkwhen he started either. Only after 6 seasons of over 24 to30 per season did he get his pay day. Ade has yet to prove that. Pls also note TH 14 assist record. I will still take him back even today.

I am not commenting on Ade any more.

    24 per season

  55. Does anyone know if there has ever been a player who has been so good he had to leave Arsenal to get first team football who has then gone on to play for a group of second rate northern shit kickers, made the move to a “big club” for £15 million or so, had one season involved in a relegation battle and then pushed out.

  58. Strange days have found us
Strange days have tracked us down
    Theyre going to destroy
    Our casual joys
    We shall go on playing
    Or find a new town………..

Where are the Doomers? Been a quite day. Why isn’t anyone talking about the end of the world? Because I do remember that we finished 4th.

    Am I provoking them?

  59. Comparing TH14 Wages 10 years ago to Ade’s wages today is kind of weak argument.

Would you like to earn 1998 wages today MalaysianG?

  60. Maybe he is still earning 1998 wages. It would explain a lot.

  61. How’s life in the Great Satan?

  62. I don’t agree that international football is dead or dying. That’s just a prejudice of a lot of people on this blog. I always look forward to the World Cup and the European Championships. They’re excellent sporting events, in my opinion.

  63. I do remember some stories doing the rounds after Dein left along the lines that the Board felt that he had got to close to the players and was offering wages that were on occasions to generous.

  64. Poliziano – Personally I think that while at one time International football was the pinicle of the sport, now many clubs teams are better and more entertaining. I always look forward to the World Cup and Euros but given a choice between watching Arsenal and England – really no contest. In fact I enjoyed last summers Euros more because England weren’t there.

    G4E

OK I will concede that but TH14 did not use interest from other clubs to agitate for a pay rise by his second season. He was a better player than even then than Ade is now.

    We Are he Arsenal!!!

  66. MG,

You do realise that you’re talking about two different players? Not only on the pitch but as human beings too. With different backgrounds, and social conditioning. Who were at the clubs in different times. Are we always going to complain if some of our players do not meet the benchmark set by the invincibles? Or the high expectations set by the fans?

  67. Mg,

“He was a better player than even then than Ade is now.”

No one is going to deny that. But tell me. How many strikers do you think are better than Henry (at his peak), playing in Europe right now?

Come up with 5 names. Strikers in Europe that are better than Henry was. Go on, have a go.

  68. I agree that England is not the main attraction of international tournaments. I always want England to do well (though not as well as Italy), but they rarely provide entertaining matches.

  69. Whats up guyz?

  70. id like to know what all the people that want wenger out think will happen if we brought in a sven or a rijkaard??? would they then have shit loads of money to spend??? people calling for wengers ed are as clueless as the couple o board members who questioned him.

  71. MG,

Ateeb’s exactly right. Henry is one of the greatest ever. Phenomenon for sure.

    Poliziano,

I like the odd international torunament. The Euros, Copa America, the Mundial, even the ACN. I even watch U-20 World Cups.

Point is that it doesn’t excite me anymore. And I’ll miss England-Slovakia without any regret. Even England-Germany is no longer what it used to be.

  72. I think England matches are spoilt for a lot of you by dislike of the England players.

  73. Not many you can compare to Henry and he has started to play great at Barca.

Ade is an Arsenal player and I hope we can forget things that happened before this season even started.

    Bless Up!

  74. Is Henry fit at the moment? I’d heard he would miss the Champions League final.

  75. Perpetual promise of the future.
    Perpetual promise of great players.

Spin and spin till you drop dead.

  76. Almunia talking? He’s one of the reasons this team is not performing. He’s an average Gk being given a life line by Arsene.

Give me the reason the Spanish national team don’t want him near?

  77. Poliziano,

It’s the culture of mediocrity that I hate. Hype every England player. Declare them World Class. Say we’re going to win every tournament. Crash out in quarters, come back home and create more hysteria.

Then there’s the trying to blame England’s crapness on the Arsenal.

Then there’s the famed English “commitment” and “mental strength”. The tacit ideology that England shouldn’t try to play better than the opponents, just to outscrap and outkick them.

Then there is that outright despicable WAG culture.

Then there’s the fact that the players stopped caring less once players got on>£5k a week. They don’t care about the national team.

Then there are the stupid friendlies. Then there is the ridiculous qualifying process. Then there are the little englanders who support the national team.

Then there’s having to listen to the likes of Sam Allardyce or Venables doing punditry when England plays.

Then there’s just disgraceful, disgusting FIFA.

Then there’s just fecking new Wembley and the exhorbitant costs of Everything England.

Not to forget the endless stupid jersies.

Then there is the effeminate David Beckham.

And 100 other reasons, all before the fact that I fecking hate John Terry, Cashley Cole, Ferdinand,

  78. I feel it’s kind of redundant to repeat this after Poliziano, Ateeb, Ole G and Paul N…But

To me, there is no one ever will be like Thierry Henry…I can understand trying to compare others to him but there is no comparison, not even Ian Wright…no one really, at least to me.

Adebayor is also Adebayor. Not Thierry Henry…Adebayor.

  79. come on dude, be nice, peaceful and encouraging.

Are you going to the Emirates Sunday to support Wenger Patrick?

  80. Hey Patrick, have you seen Howard?

  81. Agree G4E, Henry is the best striker I have had the pleasure of watching.

  82. Ole, I think its safe to say that you dont have too much time for the England National team?

But hey, you love Walcott dont you? there is still hope!

  83. I wish Th14 had found the youth fountain or something Paul N, not to ever grow past 26 :) My god, I remeber every time he used to run to the ball and I almost always celebarted before he even scored because I knew most likely the ball will end in the back of the net.

You don’t get that feeling with many strikers if any.

  84. Tell me! that guy is a footballing genius so any comparison is unfair to 99.9% of most players.

  85. Anyways Paul N, I’m so disappointed (as usual) we are playing on Sunday. Then I’m disappointed more it’s the last game of the season and now we have to wait 3 months.

  86. At least we know Wenger is staying.

  87. Wenger is not going anywhere Poliziano, I think he loves this club more than some of so called “season ticket holders”.

  88. How is it that The Daily Scumrag has pictures of Theo wearing the new away kit before Arse.com has even released them? wtf

  89. I’m with you on that G4E…it will be a long, long summer. At least I can fill some time following a team that has a link with The Arsenal in the Colorado Rapids. Unfortunately the quality on offer is what I would expect to be mid to lower Championship level so it won’t be that stimulating.

I can’t think of a better striker than Henry that I’ve had the pleasure of watching either. Legend.

  90. That’s a good idea Gris Gris, I never really picked any team from the MLS to watch or support.

Maybe I should support the Colorado Rapids since Arizona has no team in the MLS :)

  91. me post has done a lord lucan.

  92. They sometimes turn up after a while, Duke.

  93. g4e…there’s always the cricket!!!!

  94. Did I hear you really say Crickets Duke? :) If I will watch something that boring, might as well watch Baseball…it’s looks a bit interesting, plus I have the Diamond Backs in my state.

  95. Sorry for the delayed response G4E.

Yes its a long 3 months but I may check out MLS gamed too, where the Houston Dynamo play is like 15 minutes from my house.

I was thinking about going to Dallas to see the match in this competition.

i really don’t like this blue away kit nonsense.

yellow. always yellow. why mess with tradition.

  98. It’s not bad Matty, I just wish the sponsor was anything else other than Fly Emirates :)

  99. Yes Paul N, I know MLS is not that much fun but maybe good enough to keep us bust during summer months.

  100. Matty, I agree about the yellow away strip. That crappy blue kit is to much like chavs old fly emirates kit for my liking.

    G4E Ateeb, et al

This is my final comment. You guys are absolutley right that TH14 is incomparable and the best of the very best that I have seen in my life time in an Arsenal shirt. So when some one comes on and say since I replace Henry ….. in order to get a pay rise , you can kind of predict how I will react… no you will never replace Henry not as a football player and with those megalomaniac words replace TH14 as The Arsenal player whom we love and love us back.

With that I will say no more.

    We Are The Arsenal!!!!

  102. MalaysiaG you already said more than no more :) just kidding.

As someone who speaks English as a second language myself, do you think he meant replacing Thierry as a striker, not as a legend. I mean I don’t think the guy is so stupid to think he will replace the legendary achievements or status of TH14 in one season or two?

Having said that, he did score 30 goals in his first season as a regular and solo striker. That was not far off from the Thierry’s average…the difference is, TH14 did it for 6 seasons (His first & last were not in the 30 goals average).

I’m not trying to defend him, he made his mistakes and maybe opens his big mouth more than he should, but we don’t really know what’s in his heart or inside his mind…

Give the guy a break, if he stays and scores 18 – 30 goals a season good, if he wants to leave and we make some money of him, that’s also good. Constant harassment of the guy is not going to help anyone.

Your latest posting does not allow comments. I am assuming that that is a deliberate action, which I can understand and endorse.

  104. Happy Gooner

Whats with that kit?, Why change from the yellow away of old?

  105. All,

Not sure why today’s post (21/5) wasn’t allowing comments but it is now.
