Time To Get Real About Arsene & Project Youth May Just Work

On a merry-go-round, going the wrong way

- A Sense Of Freedom, The Armoury Show

Which is more or less how the Arsenal manager and squad must feel; pushing continually against the flow of the criticism, some constructive, most allying itself to the age-old chant, “You don’t know what you’re doing“. Too many armchair managerial fantasists believe they know what is best for the club, the curse of the YOUTube Championship Manager generation. That the only information they have to go on is the prejudices of the media is neither here nor there. That the players they desire could turn out as easily to be White Elephants as gems seems to matter not.

Arsene though is making more of an effort for British jobs than any politician. Knowing that hacks face a summer of torment and worry about their jobs, he launched his campaign to keep them gainfully employed on French TV. Likewise Florentino Perez, never knowingly understated, by seeking to return to his own personal fiefdom. Without those two, what on earth would the back pages have been filled with this morning?

The interview is being interpreted as a shot across the Board’s bows yet in truth it was nothing more than an honest answer to a question that has dogged him for pretty much a decade: when will you be leaving for a bigger club? It is something for them to fill the column inches over the years so why should this year be any different?

Discontent is their angle this time, targets being Wenger and Adebayor. According to reports, the latter’s value is £24m, a sum that happens to conveniently sit in the pockets of the Milanese, although they need to be told that White Fivers are no longer legal tender. My own view is that Adebayor is a key player and should be kept but if he does not want to, the club ought to “cash in”, replacing him with someone who has the desire to be play for the club. And that applies to all players, irrespective of their position.

Yet it is an attitude that has dangers, not least of which is when the player is the best – or the best – in the squad. One thing that has not been recognised enough is the move away from this reliance that Wenger has put into place. Previous seasons have seen Arsenal rely on Henry or Fabregas. Now, Wenger has an array of attacking talent, capable of providing the spark. It is this aspect that requires the consistency now as the final step.

Psychoanalysing the words of a player is notoriously difficult, the oft-misquoted Hollywood view in Westerns “White Man speaks with forked tongue” applying to them as they as tell you, “Of course I am not going“, whilst looking over their shoulder at suitors, winking, and finishing the sentence out of microphone range with, “to stay“. Troublingly, Adebayor has for some time referred to himself in the third person, responding to questions about his future, “If, Porto, for example, wants Adebayor, it is not Adebayor’s fault. Why boo me?

Crowd mentality is such that the loudest voices are interpreted as being the majority view, despite the minority making the noise; the silence of the many is viewed as being tacit approval of the view being espoused, even if the thoughts are along the lines of, “Oh, FFS, button it, you d1ckhead“. The silent majority need to find their voices to allow commonsense to prevail.

Elsewhere, the worst kept secret in English football, after the departures of Wenger, Cesc and Ronaldo to La Liga, of course, is out in the open. England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup has been officially launched – no, that’s not it – with The Sun this morning has published a possible line-up for the Finals which includes, shhhhhh, FOUR Arsenal players.

Indeed, if transfer rumours are to be believed, there are two Arsenal players-in-waiting there as well. The current members of the first team squad are Theo, Jack Wilshere, Gavin Hoyte and Kieran Gibbs with the others, Jack Rodwell and Fabian Delph, bringing with them echoes of the past. An England team that is formed of a majority of Arsenal players? Who’d have thunk it? Like yesterday’s robots, sports desks are overloading with “Cannot compute“, the thought that Arsene might actually be good for English football is too much for them to take.

Right, I’m off to enjoy a birthday drink or ten – it’s opening time somewhere in the world – so play nicely, Boys and Gurls. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. To be perfectly honest, everyone thinks our support sucks….

Funny thing is…most Arsenal fans think so too.

  2. Alex Ice Cream

    Happy Birthday Yogi.

  3. Alex Ice Cream

    Ole,

    I agree (queue the laughter).

  4. Alex Ice Cream

Sorry, should be cue (there may be a queue for this one though)

  5. Anyone who doesn’t have the heart or loyalty for the club can go! We the fans will be there long after they are gone. I support THE ARSENAL, not Arsene Fc. I f he wants to go because he can’t take criticism, then he is not the man i thought he was.

  6. Think we should ship in the WBA fans – even as their team sank their supporters carried on singing. Unlike ours who walkout because we are beaten in the SF of the Champions League by a very expensively assembled ManU team

  7. G4L

We will be here long after and still having to put up with people moaning.

  8. disagree with your view on Ade, but would be happy to play on with what we have left. i watched the Q/A on ATV the other night. There are questions to be asked , i guess but some of the people asking were just rude. we do not own the club, we do not have any rights when it comes to team selection ect ect, our job is to support the team and ride the ups and downs which go with it. i for one will be taking a summer holiday and i hope that when the season returns there will be more solidarity among all Arsenal fans and well wishers, happy birthday by the way

  9. Yes we have a lot of cuntish supporters but this is the boards fault for putting such an emphasis on gaining corporate support. Real fans are often overlooked by the board and under appreciated, it seems nowadays the ‘championship manager’ chavs are spokesman for Arsenal supporters.

  10. YW,

“My own view is that Adebayor is a key player and should be kept but if he does not want to, the club ought to “cash in”.

I am quite confused if to agree or not. The problem with this lies that we’d continue to be in a phase of constant change. Hleb wanted to leave last summer, and we let him go. I for one, wouldn’t have wanted to see him leave. And likewise, I don’t want to see Ade go. Ronaldo was kept at Manu despite his extreme whorish flirtations with madrid. Who beneffited in the end?
I agree that you shouldn’t keep someone who doesn’t want to play for us. And lacks the required desire. But maybe you could do enough to convince him to stay, which although is not possible without the supporters backing. As of last season, we have done enough, by paying him what he wanted. Maybe it’s time the fans show some form of support that could keep his mind with us. Motivation is essential for this squad, who has gone through a rough period with season. Despite being the more experienced older player, we shouldn’t expect someone to be equally mature mentally.

P.S Throw in some perks. Make Beyonce a season ticket holder.

  11. Yeah, happy birthday Yogi. Fantastic stuff to read on this blog yesterday. It was like a game of Space Invaders at times. With the “Mothership LG” flying overhead, releasing some of its (more intelligent) drones to be shot at! And whoever it was (I forget) – nice link to that Terrence guy’s blog. All necessary reading to counter the creeping ivy of anti-support.

  12. Happy Birthday Yogi!!

  13. Flint McCullough

Happy birthday, YW & thanks for the great blog.

  14. Frank's biggest fan

Many returns of the day, Yogi.

  15. GREAT post! Finally some sense! Thank you for a most enjoyable read!

Sad about Adebayor. I too would prefer that he stays, the only replacement I can think of would be Huntelaar, but there is no point in trying. We’re in for quite a summer, that’s for sure. Easily the most important one in the (ongoing) Wenger era.

  16. Frank's biggest fan

Anyone fancy Paul Scharner from wigan? He is for sale apparently. Wouldn’t mind him.

  17. I also watched the Q&A session, whilst the words of many questioning Arsene Wenger were supportive the general body language of the audience came across as very negative.
Perhaps fans and the media should realise that there are 5 prizes available each season, although one comes without a silver pot but a pot of gold, qualification for the Champions League.
This is the ‘trophy’ that allows us to attract players and one that Arsene Wenger has won consistently and is worth ten times the FA & carling cups.

We have won a ‘trophy’, that many clubs can only dream of, every year for the past 11 years.

  18. Happy Birthday, YW! You do all of us a great service with your blog and I enjoy reading your perspective, even when I don’t always agree with everything you say.

Look forward to many more happy years of reading your thoughts!

  19. for those of you who watched the shareholders q+a on Arsenal TV – what about that bloke who shouted out about Nik Bendtner drinking £500 bottles of champagne ?! What a knob, I wanted to strangle him …..

  20. Sunday’s crowd reaction assumes massive importance. The sensible and thankful majority need to find our voice.

  21. Happy Birthday, YW

90 minutes of “there’s only one AW” and “Arsene, give us a wave” on Sunday please – this is our chance to influence the future of the club…..

Anyone fancy any of the players in the (likely) relegated teams? (Except Jay Simpson of course, who still develop into an Owen like striker I believe – the original is past his sell by date). I would have said we should look at Wheater and/or Huth, but their defence has been so poor they are probably scarred for life. Downing – over-rated and not fast enough. Tuncay would be good, but we have similar players “in the ‘ole”

  22. if Wheater and Huth’s performance at the Emirates this season is anything to go by – no thanks.

  23. Paul Scharner is a life long gooner as well.

  24. ….and we havent had a decent hair-do since Freddie

  25. Happy Bday YW… enjoy your day

The shareholders used the Q and A as a basis to take little digs at team affairs to Arsene.. That is wrong, and shows a very big lack of respect to a guy who has stood by us and our team for many years now. He is no way losing it, he has a squad full of many talented individuals, and that is where the problem lies – trying to mould them into a powerful unit. Wenger has protected his players and our club through think and thin, through the good and the bad times.

To all the fans that doubt him, you are all very very fickle… what benefits willl we get out of potentially losing faith from our manager in the support from the stands.

Adebayor is the prime example… targeted by the media.. turned into the club fall-guy, same goes for Gallas. Those who think slating our manager and team is the only way to get things to improve are the ones repsonsible for the misfortune of our beloved team. Adebayor, Eboue, Gallas are almost heading towards the exit door because of a lack of respect and loyalty…. who else has to go before the some of the fans realise we are destroying our club.

Let the manager manage…. let the players play
    LET THE SUPPORTERS SUPPORT!

  26. Malaysiangunner

Good one and Happy Birthday to you YW. I am thankful to you for this excellent blog that we can visit. You have done us fans a true and great service. Have a good one.

Fully concur on Ade. He is still our best in leading the line but we can not force any one to stay.. to paraphrase him… if Ade wants to go what can the Arsenal fans do?… if Ade needs a songs and adoration in order to play hard what can the Arsenal fans do? But in my heart of heart, I would want him to stay barring someone makes us an offer we can not refuse.. 30 million pounds at least. Then next plse. Loyalty cuts both ways.

    Up The Arse!!!!

  27. Gooner sore Arse

£24m for Adebayor.Remind me again how much did we turn down for him last summer? Oh yes £24M!!!!

So we gave him 80k a week to walk around the pitch for a year like a lazy tosser. Now we are selling him for the same price we turned down.Rank bad management

  28. Sunday is the day to show our players why they are so privileged to be playing at the Arsenal… lets show them why they should step up next season and push for honours!!!

As much as anyone hates Ade… it is very true what he says about the fans. Bendtner, Eboue… and anyone else who is groaned at by the fans or booed, dont expect much in return from them players – in fact dont expect much from the team is the sounds coming out from the dressing room if you dont want to support the club.

What Ade summed up in his interview was:

*Players like himself targeted and made to look bad by the media
*Fans react to this, and show the player every game their displeasure
*Players head drops from this reaction – performance drops in turn most games
*Player leaves or player stays and convinces the fans

If fans are worried about players leaving – there is nobody to blame apart from themselves. Adebayor got a new improved contract after a heavy speculation filled summer, like Henry and Vieira witnessed in the past. He started the season brightly netting quite a few goals if i remember. Noises from the stands lead his performances to drop.

Any Ade haters … you got what you wished in Ade having an off season… but i think this guy is strong and determined enough to come back.

  29. Happy Birthday Yogi. Its very important that we keep all our players, we can’t continue to rebuild every year. This is where Wenger’s man management should come in. If any player is to be sold, the likes of Senderos should be considered. The project youth would definitely bear fruits sooner rather than later because the experience heads we need to drive it forward would hopefully come in this summer for a full onslaught next season.

  30. Gooner sore Arse

Typical comment from a *rick type ‘paper supporter’.

Id like to see you put in better performances when the crowd is constantly booing you all season.

    56 goals in 2 years
    56 goals in 2 years
    56 goals in 2 years
    56 goals in 2 years
    56 goals in 2 years

all from lazing about….. thats what i thought sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  31. Happy b’day, YW.

  32. Bernard Downes

Arsene HAS been one of our all-time great Managers, but now is the time for him to go. He thinks he can mould any European/African youngster into a top class player – apart from Cesc, he hasn’t done so for several years now.
He appears to have a totally negative view of mature english defenders. If he had bought Woodgate in Jan 2008 we would have won things in 2007/08.

    Regards – Bernie

  33. Bernard Downes

Ok so when you look at Clichy, Sagna, Toure, Gibbs, Walcott, Nasri, Arshavin, Ade, Eboue, Song, Denilson….. and the rest… you can sit back and say that they are all rubbish?????

because if i remember rightly last season you fickle nieve part time supporter bunch of fans were raving about our crop of youngsters, even in the Carling Cup early this year!!!! Is your memory any good or do you just read to much newspapers mate??? Your comment is very typical of a Sun newspaper sensationalist.. if you watched your team against Man U at Old Trafford on the weekend i think you would have saw a very dominant performance by a team of very young players who are under alot of pressure.

What does that say…..??? you think 2 or 3 results against the likes of Chelski and the Mancs removes any kind of hope for this team coming through to greatness??? If you are that willing to turn on your own team, then we aint got a chance in hell. You are a disgrace

  34. Happy Birthday Yogi… Cheers!!!!

    p.s. will we get a post tomorrow??? ;) i mean if u r not hung over… hehe

  35. Bernard,

Have Howard and Patrick recommended this blog to you? This blog is tired of your revisionist agenda whch says we wont win anything without an all English team, Arsene was and is nothing and everything he has done is either pure luck or because of the legacy of his predecessors. You wont get any positive response here. Basically it is in your interest to buzz off.

  36. Alex Ice Cream

    Gooner Sore,

Its could be the opposite of what you say. Give Ade a new contract to keep him for 1 year when we could not afford to lose any more players and also protect his transfer value, then sell him if necessary.

Sounds like good management to me.

  37. Malaysiangunner

    ChrisGoona

I have heard the crowd sung in games even when I watch TV, they were singing for him.. how we cheered him on in his fantastic goal against Villareal. After that goal he started to stroll in teh rest of the games. All of the Arsenal fans knows how to appreciate genuine effort and imporvements in players. Song used to be roundly criticized now most sing we have only one Song..we have only one Song. If you contribute to the team and even if you had a bad game but worked your arse off .. it is appreciated. So my advice to de is show effort and commitment and the cheers will be back. Bendy had terrible games where he could not hit a barn door 3 yards out but was he booed. No he show application and commitment and was a team player.. all the commenst afterwards was it was one of those days but at least he tried.

So while the fans should not have booed any player for that matter but Ade can win the fans back easily, if he is humble enough to try. Come on we want all Arsenal players to succeed , just show us some grit and fight and play like you want to wear the Red and White forever.

    Up The Arse!!!

  38. Malaysiangunner

    My advice to Ade…

  39. happy b’day YW

  40. Alex

Well said… can’t handle fans anymore disrespecting our club, team and manager.. The only people taking the team backwards is them dwelling on the past. Anyone that attempts to bad mouth or in any form say or provoke any destructive/sly/spoilt/glory-hunter comments on us here will get gunned down.

The invincibles done so well becuase they had great team ethic and great support. This squad is bigger and has more talent, experience is there despite what anyone says.. its their age that is deceieving and manipulates ppl to believing they are inexperienced. They are young and potentially going to turn into a great team.. to help them why not show a bit of support – STARTING SUNDAY!

  41. Malaysiangunner

Denilson, Song, Bendtner have all been booed and moaned at by the fans when performing well.. There are no excuses here.

Its a loyalty issue between the fans and the players and the club. If we dont show them we are behind them 100% of the way… why should they give a tos*.

If i was one of Eboues mates… i.e. a Cesc or a RvP and witnessed 1st hand the stick he got that game i would have been shocked. I would have thought to myself – “are these the fans im fighting to bring a trophy to week in week out!?”

What we show the fans is what they will show us. We showed Henry love, Bergkamp, Kanu, Pires, Campbell, Vieira…. they didnt win the League every year, they only got to the Champs League Semis once..!!!!… If we cant show this promising group of young players how lucky they to be at our club. Then in a way we are destroying that promise. Its your choice as a fan to do so… Supporters support no matter what.

  42. On setanta News this morning I was treated to the pleasure of being labelled, by the press no less, a ficle and un-appreciative fan. The Setanta team had invited one of the Daily Mail’s ‘expert’ football coloumists (unfortunatly his name escapes me) to evaluate the days stories. Second up after the demise of Sunderland was the AW situation. The lecture was one of how Arsenal fans do not appreciate what AW has done for Arsenal and English football, he went on to describe Arsenal fans as revolting in both senses of the word, another example of the clever use of the English language commanded by the media, and in Danger of forcing out the Arsenal man. My morning from this point on has been consumed with Anger, I will refrain from a full blown rant, suffice to say it was only a few weeks ago that the percentage of Arsenal fans where supporting AW against the usual media cries of lack of experience and one dimensional football. I only hope the annual Ronaldo transfer soap resumes sooner rather than later drawing the media’s goldfish like attention from the Emirates.
    IN WENGER WE TRUST

  43. The move to the new stadium had had quite an interesting effect on the dynamics of the fans.

At Highbury, the feeling was one of a family club with a huge fanbase. The feeling I got was 38,000 fans that felt quite spoiled at the high quality of football and winning trophies during the early Wenger years for one of the more reasonably priced season tickets – Spurs fans were paying the same prices but for a much more inferior product. It was a feeling of over-achievement if anything.

The extra new 22,000 fans who hadn’t really been able to see Arsenal’s Highbury successes now feel short-changed – not helped by now having to pay the highest ticket prices in the world – and has led to a more impatient and frustrated atmosphere.

We’ve gone from a family club pulling together to a corporate club with customers demanding value for money.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with that, but it is a consequence of becoming a much larger club.

The transition period that has been talked about for the last couple of years should really include the fans in the stands, the management and Board as well as the playing staff.

  44. The Arsenal motto: Victoria concordia crescit—>Victory through harmony

The D&G motto: fatum infitialis crescit—->Doom through negativity

  45. Alzation

    very very true

Fans must realise this, the players are doing their best, Wenger is working harder than ever.. the economy is as messed up as its ever been. Costs are just as high… competition growing on all fronts. Fans need to take a step back and realise that we are still adapting and getting use to these restraints. Wenger has planned ahead, brought in youth and the fruits will bear. Fans need to get behind the team.. if we can they will reward us. Wenger has brought in alot of quality.

  46. The Spice Girl’s Motto : Infidel castro gervais –

    >Girl Power !!!!

  47. Malaysiangunner

    ChrisGoona

First I disagree that Eboue,Denilson, Ade and Song was booed even if the played well. Eboue more than others for for reasons that is well publicized and we need not go into that. Paul N will say it is not edfying.

Supporters support no matter what. That is true but players need to play their part. I see arguments here that purport the notion the players and AW are completely blameless. I have seen bad days in the 80s but I have not seen such venom. May be it is the ticket prices that gives these fans a sense of entitlement and many genuine fans are priced out of the games. But the Club, the players and AW needs to do it’s part , it takes 2 hands to clap. AW needs to start shwing some transparency in his dealings with the fans(he needs to explain clearly after the transfer window why he did what he did, he does not owe it to the fans but it will help the fans understand his thinking and thereby buy into his vision) and the players to talk less and play like the first 7 minutes against the ManUres and continues even if 2-0 down.
The atmosphere even from the Tv was electric.

Yes we can do it…we are The Arsenal.

    Up The Arse!!!

  48. Blaming the fans for everything is a little bit of a cop-out. Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool players all get booed alot more then our players.

Obviously it has a negative effect, but we didnt mount a title challenge because we weren’t good enough, simple as that

  49. HG,

You’re deliberately hiding from the point. Nobody is blaming the fans for everything.

But let’s face it…I keep saying it….almost everyone I know thinks our support is “shit”. You go 2 goals down and the fans start leaving?

  50. Malaysiangunner

Fans right from match day 1 this season were against the notion that Denilson, Song etc should even be considered in the lineup. Who gave the fans a right for team selections, our own fans, the media and every tom dick and harry wrote us off from the start. Our own fans moaned and groaned at every opportunity, and our own fans booed whenever it felt necessary.

Yes i agree it is part and parcel of the game.. but our atmosphere is shocking. It may be because we have a number of cooperate spectators which we sort of need for financial reasons. Every big club has them. But in a 60,000 seater stadium with such a promising young team full of quality, attacking flair, full of ambition, and a great manager leading and guiding them. It seems to me within the last 2 seasons everyone including our own fans has attempted to demoralise them.

Being a true Arsenal fan it hurts me seeing them suffer like this, and who ever leaves i dont blame them.

  51. HG sets the standard. let’s compete with the Tiny totts and the chavs for curntishness

  52. Ole, that was unbeleivable I have to admit

  53. Happy Gooner

So you think because other teams do it every now n then you think its ok, shall we lower our standards now and treat our players like sh** so they learn to play well. I dont know how you tend or bring your kids up, but encouragement works alot better than beating them with your slipper.

Dont you think that is a bit counter productive,..,. dont you think that your attitude is a prime example of taking Arsenal backwards. Dont you think that reading the papers and believing every tabloid selling article is false… dont you believe that believing that crap will effect your support for your club…

1 more… do you think that showing such attitude to our players who fight for our colours and pride… like the boys did for the AMAZING AWAY SUPPORT at Old Trafford… do you think this support will help the team….

  54. Happy Gooner

you want us as Arsenal supporters to be that fickle and turn on our own players when ever we feel necessary.

    You are unbelievable.

  55. Guys Happy gooner only says things in jest. Being Arse 21 in his previous avatar, he cant help not dishing out the banter.

  56. Alex

He and any other backwards supporter need to be put into their place… they need to realise that the supporters that actually support the team do not accept such disrespect and behaviour towards our club and that we need to draw a line and get rid of these fickle fans. Id rather see 20,000 empty seats and 40,000 fans who are willing to cheer the players on and inspire them to win something for the fans and for the club.

    Such attitude is counter productive.

  57. Happy Gooner

Alex who is this person you always say that I am?

    ChrisGOONA,

No thats not what I said at all, what your saying is stating the obvious, of course booing your own team is bad. I’m just saying that Adebeyor and alot of the team cant put all the blame on us for there poor performances, if anything, he’s being paid £80.000 a week to play regardless of what the fans think

  58. HG

Using his 80k a week wage bill is no excuse either to blame it on him. It works both ways. What im saying is if we show them a bit of support they will work their socks off that bit extra and they will feel that even though they are struggling in a game and the fans are spurring them on like we should, they will not let their heads drop.

This year, they have felt that the fans backing is diminishing, and the faith has dropped. End result being their heads dropping, this will continue no matter what players are brought in.

  59. Way to go, ChrisGoona!!! With you all the way!

    ******

    @Malaysiangunner

So you don’t like everyone or agree with every decision – get over it. Encourage the team, inspire them, otherwise we won’t get the best out of them.

    @ Happy Gooner

“I’m just saying that Adebeyor and alot of the team cant put all the blame on us for there poor performances, if anything, he’s being paid £80.000 a week to play regardless of what the fans think.”

Nobody has put “all the blame” for anyone’s performances on the fans. He and Wenger have pointed what should be obvious – that getting on a player’s back does not help him to play better – and it demotivates him even more if it starts before he’s even got onto the pitch! So stop squirming and accept that measure of blame. You can’t coach the team by groaning and moaning from the stands, or whining and dissing them in cyberspace. It’s not your job to coach them anway – your job is to support. If you don’t get behind them, you’re worse than useless.

How much the players get paid is neither here nor there – they are human beings, and human beings thrive on encouragement, especially performers. That’s just how it is.

So what’s more important – your “right” to moan, or creating an atmosphere conducive to success?

  60. Happy birthday Yogi, enjoy the day and some pints. Thanks for an excellent blog, keep up the good work.

  61. Happy Gooner

chrisGOONA, I agree that fans need to get behind the team at all costs (who wouldnt?) but the cause of alot of the fans’ bad reaction is because the players are strutting around with no urgency like they dont give a sh1t, everyone is responsible for this season fizzling out again, not just the fans. I just think that before someone like Adebeyor comes out and slates the fans, he should maybe start his speech by stating that he’s sorry for not putting 110% in every game.

  62. FunGunner

“So what’s more important – your “right” to moan, or creating an atmosphere conducive to success?”

Thats exactly the issue a section of our supporters need to resolve with themselves. Well put.

  63. Happy Gooner

FunGunner, creating an atmosphere cinductive to success is more important.

A few questions in that meeting should of been –

    1. Why did you split up all the people from highbury that sing (all two of them)?
    2. Why are the stewards intent on stopping us supporting the team.
    3. Why is the first row of seats so far from the pitch?
    4. Why does Adebeyor refer to himself in the third person all the time?

  64. Happy Gooner

You just summed up your attitude, and why we are going backwards as a club. You have no excuses for your attitude, your grudge against players and using players as scapegoats leading you to blame the effort of that player is where the problem lies.

Try laying off the skysports and The Sun is my advice. What i see week in week out is 11 players fighting on all fronts against criticism from media, from fans, from pundits, and along with the actual pressure of winning a game it cant help. Your attitude is counter-productive – if you cant accept that then we cant move forward as fans or a club.

  65. @HG
Take up points 1-3 with the club.
Take up point 4 with Adebayor.

You may not be able to do anything about any of those things, but one thing you can do is get your OWN priorities right.

  66. Happy Gooner

Chris, unfortunately the players have no balls, especially Ade

  67. Happy Gooner

    1. Why have you got in for Ade who has scored….. 56 goals in 2 seasons?
    2. Why have the newspapers dictated your thinking?
    3. Why have you got in for Ade who has scored…. 56 goals in 2 seasons?
    4. Why are proving to be a strain on your club?
    5. Why have you got in for Ade who has scored….. 56 goals in 2 seasons?
    6. Why is your support for Arsenal conditional?
    7. Why have you got in for Ade who has scored….. 56 goals in 2 seasons?
    8. Why do you want us real Arsenal supporters to demoralise the players?
    9. Why have you got in for Ade who has scored….. 56 goals in 2 seasons?

you want some more… because for me your support for the club is very very questionable

  68. Yogi,

Good post. Agree wholeheartedly with your summation of Ade. I’ve always been a big Ade fan – but have been disappointed with his attitude. If he wants out – then let him go. Afterall, despite the fact that both Milan team are big brands in football – it doesn’t mean they’re actually a Big teams. Inter were comprehensively bettered in all round play by UTD in both legs of the CL. AC have been struggling to even qualify for CL in recent years. If anything – leaving Arsenal for either of those teams is actually a step back..!!
As for criticism of Wenger. Im all for constructive criticism – but cynical comments and sarcastic remarks made by shareholders who’s share values have mushroomed since Wenger has been here is out of order, disrespectful and should not be tolerated. Wenger is one of the finest managers ever to grace the game – and we should all be very grateful that he’s at this club.

  69. Steww, I am not targeting Frank. Frank asked me to make a declaration of love to the club, manager, players etc, which I did in good faith. He then accused me of lying.

Methinks Frank is too uptight, so I am just having a little fun with him. I promise you he will not be harmed, not even mentally.

And, I am not looking to make friends. All of you are fans of AFC and I respect you for that. I have no problem with disagreement.

  70. Happy Gooner

chris, Its not conditional, I’m just telling the truth as I see it.

You’ve got the rose tints on

  71. Happy Gooner

If you want some balls.. Chelsea will provide you with that, they will also provide you players with cun*ish attitudes like Cole, Terry, Drogba, Bosingwa…. you will fit in nicely there too. OOhhh wait a second you might wanna reconsider because Chelsea actually want Adebayor.. so does Milan… so does Inter…

Maybe he talks about himself in 3rd person because everyone else seems to be chatting boll*** and maybe being African plays a part in the way he speaks???

Oh yeah… 56 goals in 2 seasons…. thats an amazing stat dont you think??

  72. Happy Gooner

    PDT,

Frank and ChrisGOONA suffer from very bad womens problems

  73. Happy Gooner

chris, I’m not questioning his ability am I clever cloggs? Wake up chris

  74. …well hello, PDT….

  75. Helloooo Frank! How’ve you been? Become a little more trusting of the big bad world? Or are you still skulking in your corner?

  76. Anyways, I have promised Bob to be nice to you, so..

  77. Rose tints???

Very original, you got the cu*t tints on. You think the players have been dilly dallying around like ballerina’s all season. You think you can slam a player and turn up to games calling and slagging names… who the hell do you think you are. Why should we put up with your crap. You turn up to a game ready to jump on any players back who you think is best to be used as a scape goat.

Your love for the club is conditional, and you are a CP ‘counter productive’ supporter.

  78. ChrisGoona

why u support ade and slam cole two ex arsenal players with simular attitude ?

  79. Santino

I think the real question is why question someone who sticks up for their own team and club???

  80. ChrisGOONA,

    46 goals not 56.

  81. It’s funny how money comes into everything…

  82. ChrisGoona

I think Ade’s stats are actually 46 goals in 2 seasons (70 starts and 15 subs apps).

Still impressive though. Shame his offside stats are 293 in the same period

  83. Happy Gooner

Chris, you dont know me, I’m not a booer, so whats you’re next excuse?

  84. Happy Gooner

For me, Arsene Wenger has the right to criticise the fans, Adebeyor however, has no right. Tjhe mans a coplete knob It amazes me how he can get away with what he says about the club

  85. ….no not skulking…I work nights…and I had to sort out Peter this morning…he has colic….I am intrigued to know how you intend to’look fater

….I notice that even the Board and AW are alarmed at the negativity of Arsenal fans…though not the root cause I have no doubt that the negativity and cynicism displayed by blogsites has a direct and indirect effect……from a support and matchday atmosphere perspective…the Arsenal experience is becoming ruined……

  86. i think everybody will share their real opnion about ade soon enough .

  87. ..’look fater…is old saxon….

  88. Ole Gunner

Thanks… my point is no matter how they perform on the pitch, we should encourage them to perform better. That is our role as supporters. For Wenger the board, ex players like Dixon, players like Cesc, RvP, Eboue, Ade, SOng, CLihy, Sagna to all come out and say enough is enough and support the team…. is there not a problem that needs resolving.

Fans need to step back and be realistic and stop memorising in the glory years. They only got to 1 champs league semi final.. our boys got their this year and got well beaten by the best team in England and probably the world.

They showed at Old Trafford by playing Man U off the park that they can achieve something with a little support. The away fans were amazing i have to say, they cheered throught the 90 mins. We lacked that killer instinct up front and failed to break through Man U’s negative tactics. But you can understand why they played that way.

Support the team and they will prosper.. they have the ability too

  89. Happy Gooner

    Chris would make Ade captain

  90. ….interesting article on Page 7 of this months Scientific American….called Planning of the Apes…..

  91. santino

What is the real opinion, if he leaves you cannot blame him.. he has been pushed out all season.

    HG

Excuse for what… you seem to be the one looking for excuses constantly to slam your own team and club. You are a pothetic excuse for a supporter.

  92. Coulnt you handle another African being captain??? would that be a shock to your system?

    Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic… Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic… Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic…Pothetic… Pothetic…Pothetic…

    Happy Gooner aka Doomer

  93. who pushed him last summer chris ?

  94. Happy Gooner

chris, whats him being african got to do with anything?

  95. ..’a rock throwing chimp at Swedens Furuvik Zoo proves that nonhuman primates can plan for the future. For the past several years, Santino has put on a show of dominance every day at around 11.00am by yelling and running around, which is typical of male chimps. But he would occasionally lob rocks at zoo visitors….’…it seems the young Santino has been showing signs of forward planning by making piles of rocks days before….

  96. ….what are you doing to support the manager and players, santino, HG?….

  97. crafty bison

Wasn’t a Cesc “spit” decision supposed to be made by now?

  98. Happy Gooner

You tell me… you have no basis around any of your points and you continue to savage to find reasons to slam players, your manager and your club.. I think you will find happiness down at the Bridge mate seriously – think about it!! I have nothing else to say to you, you are a lost cause. Latas

    Santino…

Who pushed him… where did he go????

  99. PDT is just like Franchise. He boasts about the fun he is going to give us, but then never delivers. Disappointing.

  100. Happy Gooner

    chris you are a moron

  101. chris ,
cole also left a year later

  102. …Chris is not a moron he is a passionate supporter of the club, manager and players…and quite rightly he gets offended when other so-called supporters do not seem to care at all…and only seem to have an interest in posting short, slightly negative, cynical comments….

  103. Happy Gooner…
    you are a doomer,
you call urself an Arsenal supporter
yet u cant handle it if we end up a loser.
    Happy Gooner…
    you are a doomer,
you come on bloggs to express your displeasure,
you points are naff, and when u try comment u will always be a loser
You think you support Arsenal because ur a sore loser, yet u cant even understand that the players need our support to grow and prosper!!…
    Happy Gooner…
    you are a doomer

    Happy Gooner…
    you are a doomer!!!

  104. …you see you two…HG and santino…offer nothing…about as witty as two teenage lads at the back of the classroom…snickering…

  105. Happy Birthday Yogi, have a good day.

I think the bigger picture is the way Adebayor has expressed himself.

I don’t see any problem at all with him being disappointed by the crowds reaction to him, i think he has a valid point.

But he should react on the pitch, as the old cliche (or Clichy) says – let your feet do the talking.

There is only one other player in the Prem who can offer a team what Ade does on his day, big, strong, powerful, a menace to opposition defenders, and that is Drogba, and we have all seen first hand what he can do when in the mood.

I have said it day after day, some of our so called fans should be careful what they wish for – they may well regret trying to drive Adebayor and AW out of the club.

Now what we need to do is show our support for the boss on Sunday, and show him that the real fans value what he has, and is, doing for our great club.

  106. Frank

Thanks.. we must stand up and fight for our club before all these idiots destroy what good we have left. None of us should tolerate arsenal bashing from areas of our supporters.

  107. Not knowing is not a crime. Crime is remaining complacent in your ignorance

  108. Happy Gooner

Frank I dont need validation of my support from anyone in the world

  109. …so are you going to extend that common metaphor into an Arsenal supporting context, santino?….

  110. The crime is being a whiny little bitch and slagging off your own players….

  111. Matt

The real fans must stand up and be counted on Sunday.. because after Sunday it can all go downhill for Arsenal football club. We need every player on board fighting off speculation and getting ready for next season as a new challenge awaits.

All we can do is show Wenger and the players that although things didnt turn out well, they can be better next season and we will do everything we can that can help their prospects.

After all we all want success… be positive is the key and encourage them.

  112. Happy Gooner

What about Arsenal bashing from our players? Is that alowwed?

  113. …come along young man…crime is the metaphor…Arsenal support is the context….bring the two together for us……

  114. …which players and in what context, Unhappy Gooner…?

  115. Agreed Chris – I for one will be showing my appreciation for AW and every player in the squad.

It’s a shame that a minority seem to have forgotten what being a supporter actually means.

  116. Santino & HG

what are your excact intentions.. i dont know why i’m bothering here but..

lets say Ade leaves, lets say Toure follows, lets say Sagna leaves as well… lets say Eboue follows. Lets say Wenger has enough next season of his players getting driven out and decides to retire or coach France. Lets say Fab leaves too and RvP and Song and Clichy…. then Walcott…

What does it take for supporters like you to see that what you are doing is having a negative impact on the team.

  117. …naaaaah….we won’t see that on Sunday, Chris….several thousand will not turn up…and of those that do there will only be about 20,000 in the stadium to applaud the players at the end….

  118. ….I doubt if most of the club level will manage to get out into their seats…probably stay in the bar…..

  119. arsenal support is not the context here .its some fans attempt to bring the club to mediocrity .so they can feel closer to the club.

  120. Hopefully those that don’t turn up won’t bother coming next season also Frank. ;-)

  121. HG & Santino

You are the minority, and a very irritating minority who most genuine Arsenal fans are disgusted with, who the players are disgusted with, who Wenger is disgusted with…. how does that make you feel, apart from the feeling of being a spoilt brat

  122. …no it isn’t …it is some fans attempt to get the level and quality of support up to the level that a class football club, manager and players and deserve….

  123. ..that would be good, Matt….

  124. santino

How is supporting your team through hard times an attempt to bring mediocrity??? are you that ignorant to take a step back and see the bigger picture. You are losing track of the fundamental factors that are needed to be successfull. Support is one of them

  125. Happy `b’day Yogi. May your years be long and your wisdom be continuously replenished, RASER!

  126. If you work hard, Santino, you might become a mediocrity one day.

  127. Couldn’t agree more Frank….

Santino – don’t you think the superb support that the Stoke fans have displayed this season hasn’t inspired their players to perform at their maximum week in week out at home?

We could learn a thing or 2 from that.

  128. Crafty

I believe a personal hearing was requested and that is due to happen in July.

    YW

  129. …you still sober, YW?…Happy Birthday…..

  130. we support dont celebrate after a season like this . villa might celebrate if they get to 4th place ,not arsenal.some fans even afraid of the concept that we are challenging for honours . they cant take it .

  131. …what the fuck are you talking about, santino you wretch…there has been a tradition of applauding players at the end of the season since time immemorial…last game was always a great laugh in good times and bad….it has fuck all to do with achivement…get behind the team you bastard…

  132. Who discussed celebrating?

Just because you have unconditional support for your team doesn’t mean we aren’t disappointed we didn’t win anything.

But crying about it and slagging off and booing your own players is not very productive is it?

Make you feel better does it?

  133. Frank

Quite happy at the moment. Yet to open the Spanish Brandy but when that happens, it will be a case of “Whoops, there goes the day…”

    YW

  134. Santino wont be there on Sunday Frank – you can just tell….

He will be whining about Ade and AW from afar…

  135. Spanish Brandy?

You need to get down with the kids and get a few Jager Bombs down you Yogi… lol

  136. Nice to see a few proper supporters… HG and Santino you must feel so aloneeeee. I bet they will try another blogg, LG take in the homeless lost supporters. You want the link?

  137. Happy Birthday Yogi. Thanks for the blog.

  138. Happy Birthday YW… keep up the good work!!!

  139. Happy Gooner

Chris, my only gripe is with Adebeyor, nothing else, you’re mental

  140. So whats your gripe HG?

  141. HG

whatever you say… ill be waiting for the next comment u make against my club. Mark my words UNHAPPY DELUDED GOONER. ;)

  142. Matt

dont start him please, he will cut out and bring you every back page of the Sun!!!!!!!!!!

  143. after a season like this its better to be a UNHAPPY DELUDED GOONER than a happy deluded gooner

  144. santino

Get a life… Your making me laugh!!!

  145. Happy Gooner

    chris you are a mentalist

  146. Happy Gooner

I’m almost starting to like you

  147. Happy Gooner

Ade’s a moron, thats my gripe. I dont want him in the dressing room

  148. Well what difference does it make to you that he is in the dressing room?

Unless you aren’t telling us something, and you are in fact there also…..

Santino – you really talk some bollocks.

  149. Frank, I didn’t realize you work nights. I have great respect for anyone who can lead a normal life (you did mention you were picking your child up, so I know you are a family man) while working nights, so kudos to you.

I am now formally off your case.

  150. Terence McGovern

Watch and you will see that part of the FA’s campaign to bring the World Cup to England will be to throw their collective weight(at there are a lot of fatties at the FA) behinf the 6+5 rule. Basically they will whore themselves out to FIFA and UEFA for some personal glory and 30 pieces of Silver to sell out the Premier league with a hatchet in the back.

If they do this the PL should disavow them.

  151. Happy Gooner

Matt, I dont want him the dressing room I want him in my bedroom

  152. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/19/wenger-arsenal-milan

At least the PHW is being supportive for a change…

  153. fans can be angry and frustrated. but scapegoating, blaming wenger, individual players is plainly immature and frankly idiotic.

wenger’s made some mistakes but if that’s grounds to sack him, tell me this..

what manager should we bring in? what manager would do better than AW given the financial circumstances at the club? how is this new manager gonna get more out the players we have whom AW has brought along for the last 3 years? why is this new manager gonna be better spending our limited funds in the transfer market?

we all want a change ie more silverware but changing managers is the lamest knee-jerk thoughtless reaction to our past few seasons in which we have gone to a cl final, cl semi, and one result away from the league.

no one’s saying there aren’t improvements to be made, but its not as easy as firing someone.

  154. Happy Gooner

But dont you think Adebeyor, on a personal level, has no right to criticise the fans? He’s using us as part of his plan for his ‘dream’ move

  155. By the same token – what right do you have to boo him?

And how do you know what his plans are?

  156. Happy Gooner

How many times do I have to say that I never boo players on the field, its stupid.

Matt if yoy cant see that he wants to leave and is engineering a move then you need to go to specsavers. If it doesn’t happen I’ll come on here and say ‘I love Tottenham’

  157. I look forward to it HG. ;-)

  158. Malaysiangunner

    Matt, Chris et al

Your efforts to get supporter to support irrespective of what happens on the pitch is a lost cause. Supporters are humans and when they see disloyalty(Ade) and Eboue(you know what) it irks them. It certainly irked me but I moved on and as long as he is wearing the Red and White he will be supported. But the Man/boy Ade then opened his mouth to slag off the fans(he may be exactly right in everything he has said but of all people he has not earned that right yet from the fans) ,what do you expect normal humans to do? REact negatively. If Cesc had said the same things(which he will never do in public, that is why he is captain) we would have taken heed. He has shown all the loyalty in the world to the Arsenal and we love him for it although his form has not been good but do we boo him? No. Song is coming good too in many eyes and may be the DM that we are looking for. Ade’s mouth and ego(if I replace Henry why should I not be paid like Henry? yes we still remember, type of comments does not endear him to anyone)

Chris I hear you go repeating 46 to us and yet people are saying that Bendy should replace him( I for one do not agree just yet). Surely you can see why some section of the fans like Bendy better? does he score more goals , no, is he a better player , no. But they see him trying , they see him proud to wear that shirt. They see him eager. He may have the same ego but not when he is on the pitch, on the pitch he makes runs and he plays for the team.

Chris the way you went about it as if it is all the fans fault and Ade is innocent and blameless if and when he decides to leave the club – I find that argument hard to take and more importantly not convincing to your cause.

You want fans to follow , you need better arguments. It is counter productive and maybe if we boo Ade we will get a lower price for him and not be able to replace him adequately. Those are convincing.

    Up The Arse!!!

  159. The same people who now want Bendtner to play, were booing him about 2 months back also…..

    Fickle….

  160. Here’s what separates a supporter from a fecking moaner:

I hate Silvestre. Don’t rate him as a player, don’t rate him as a man.

But I don’t come online everyday slating the player I don’t like. I would never boo him.

I would be critical of him every now and then. But I would never create him into a hate figure- one who’s mere existence stands for all I am unhappy with at the club. One who I’d never give credit for his contributions. I won’t go on and on, very second of every damn day, slating him and ridiculing his every move, magnifying his failings beyond reality and distorting his actions.

I would rather spend my time focused on the 99.9% of our players who I love.

It’s like that. it’s almost at love, when the love (for a wife, a partner ) goes, the failings is all that is left to see.

  161. according to some fans here we should still support and cheer ashley cole .

  162. i booed silvestre for 9 years .all of a sudden i had to stop it but still i just cant cheer for him .may be next year i will try.

  163. Santino,

You are a hopeless wind up merchant spoiling for a fight. There are better ways to spice up your life.

  164. Who has said that Arsenal supporters should cheer Ashley Cole?

  165. Happy Gooner

    Ole Gunner

  166. Happy Gooner

    Only Joking

  167. Oh Ashley Cole…..

    is a f-cking arsehole
    is a f_cking arsehole….
    is a f*cking arsehole….

    Oh Ashle Cole….

  168. OMG…..the Arsenal blog world has gone mad….my god have these fools only just realised that we don’t own Arsene Wenger and that his one of the most coverted managers in the world….imbeciles the lot of them….

N yes i have FINALLY finished my exams!!!

  169. Happy Gooner,

Is playing in a room full of plastic balls not enough to entertain you? Why are you playing here!

  170. Were they all okay, Maria?

  171. @ Malaysiangunner

“Ade’s mouth and ego(if I replace Henry why should I not be paid like Henry? yes we still remember, type of comments does not endear him to anyone)”

Is this an example of you having moved on? Why not support ALL the players who currently wear the shirt? They’re a team, in case you hadn’t noticed.

You obviously didn’t listen to the Football Focus interview – what Adebayor said was that he feels that whatever he does, he will never win the fans over. That they cheer when he scores a goal, and then boo his name the next game. He wasn’t angry, so much as aggrieved and perplexed.

For your information, Cesc DID criticise the fans last season – he said that it was tougher playing at home than away because of all the groaning at mistakes etc. He also spoke to another club, and only stayed because Wenger convinced him. Are you going to get on his case as well? No, didn’t think so.

You mention Bendtner, but he gets barracked by some fans who feel they know exactly what he is thinking and who, like you, feel they have a right to make their feelings known to him, over and over and over again.

What matters more to you – making a point, or helping players to play at their best?

  172. That they were Pz, just hoping for that good mark now…how have things been with you?….I see you have some new fans skirting around you….

  173. he is playing here with plastic fans like you alex

  174. I’m glad about that, Maria. No more self-harm for you! You were joking about that, weren’t you? I hope so.

New fans? No, they’re not fans. I don’t know what they are. Some say trolls, some say orcs.

  175. Malaysiangunner

    Matt 3:30 PM

Fickle or waiting to be convinced of the players commitment to the club then changing their mind. You lot keep insulting a large swat of the fans and those who boo may be deserved it but sometimes durng the ManUre game in the CL semis, the pain I felt looking at some players hangng their heads makes me want to switch off my TV. So those who had left early maybe can not tolerate the deep pain in seeing the Orc and the diver and the rednose getting the better of our beloved club. It still hurts badly.

Some express their pain badly and booing should not be countenance but when you lot can start understand the reasons for all the negativity especially the club, the manager and the players we can start being united and support the club. One camp slagging and feeling superior to the other does not help the club.

    Up the Arse!!!

  176. Just thought I’d stumble through the front door and say, Hi, Hugs and…

…In all of this, the one overriding thought that keeps coming back to me is that some of the Arsenal fans who booed Eboue & co cannot handle criticism back.

As my old Mum said, “If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out”.

    YW

Like I said Cesc saying it is different from Ade.

I had moved on until he starts blabbing his mouth to the BBC. He should not be perplexed and understand and played harder and better.

    Up the Arse!!!

  178. Bernard Downes

Oh dear oh dear, I seem to have upset ChrisGoona and Alex. Your are so OTT, it must be a generational thing. One final attempt for sanity if I may before I “buzz off”.
I never said any Arsenal players are rubbish, my questions to you are,
    (a) whether Senderos, Silvestre, Djourou and Bischcoff are good enough to ever play in a Premiership winning side?
    (b) whether Diaby, Vela, Denilson and Song will ever turn undoubted potential into trophy winning consistency?
    (c) And, dare I ask, is Theo Walcott the superstar we all hoped he would be, or just a very fast wide striker who struggles against good disciplined defenders?
I am sure all the above players are good enough to have great careers in football, but will they ever win things at the highest level?
One final final point re this English player debate. To win in England, playing against teams who nearly all have good headers of the ball, it is essential to have at least one commanding centre back. I am not fussy whether he is black/white, english or foreign, but we need someone now, not 2 or 3 years down the line. It therefore strikes me that we should be looking to buy someone we know can do this job, having proved it in the English leagues.

    Regards – Bernard

P.S. In 50 years of watching Arsenal, for the most part home and away, I have never ever booed an Arsenal player. But that level of football experience does give me the right to offer constructive criticism, but clearly not on this site!

  179. MG,

Well done. I think we may have just solved the mystery of what a fan feels when they team is losing. Yet that doesn’t appear to create that validation you seem desperate to give ‘supporters’ that boo any one individual player. Would you have felt it was justified to boo Gibbs and Alumina due to their perceived mistakes in that game because fans felt bad??

    I mean GET REAL!!!

  180. Morning/Afternoon all!

Malaysian Gooner, OK fans are humans but why is the feeling that Arsenal have the worst supporters when we are one of the most successful teams in the PL? is that sense?

As far as Ade, when does forgiveness come into the picture? This issue was before the season even started. You also do remember that we are fans and have not reacted the same way as many others. I remember wondering whether Vieira or Henry would leave for years and I hated it. It may not have been the exact same situation but the fans didnt show them any bad face once they stayed as far as I remember.

Ade did not slag anyone he is just letting the fans know how he feels, it should be a wake up call to us and not a stick used to beat him with.

It is very hard to perform at your best if one person is coming down on you much less THOUSANDS OF “FANS” in harmony booing you!

Footballers are no less human than you and I, who do better with encouragement(remember that). If Ade needs a talking to let Arsene do it and If Arsene needs a talkin to let the board take care of it. WE SUPPORT!

    Blessings!

  181. But they seem to have taken a personal interest in you Pz…..why is that??

Hasn’t Frank being around putting them in their place?

  182. …that is not the point MalaysianGunner….the point is that the negativity is getting worse because it is being actively promoted and encouraged….many of us believe that that must stop…..

…btw the people that attempt to assuage the despair you feel by taking an optimistic, constructive and supportive view…are the very ones you appear to criticise your self…otherwise you would be on some of the most negative blogs spreading your message of togetherness by trying to get supporters to support the manager and players….

    …Arsenal….

  183. …they are already in their place, maria….they are exactly where they choose to be….

  184. Happy Birthday Yogi, and thanks for the blog.

I think we need to make a distinction between “supporters” and “fans”.

“Supporters” do precisely that, they support.

Slagging off players, the Manager, the Club, the BOD, anything to do with the club, whether at the ground or on the web (where the scum in the media lurk and syphon off ideas and emotions to feed off) means that that person, by definition, cannot be classed as a “supporter”.

A “fan”(atic), however, is a slightly different animal.

“Fans” do not necessarily offer “support”.

There are also several rather unpleasant characteristics that are sometimes ascribed to fan(atic)s.

Right now, a rather selfish and immature element has become very vocal about our club.

These people belong to the “me me me me me”, “I want I want I want”, “stamp my feet” and “throw a tantrum” sector of society.

They feel they can “demand” things, and that these “demands” HAVE to be met, simply because they want them to be so.

Much of this stems from a total inability to apply any kind of realistic view on life, and I have a strong feeling that much of this inability to be realistic about life stems from the plethora of silly computer games that convince these armchair warriors that they really do know more than someone like AW.

I think a few unscrupulous individuals, not only “journalists”, have fed off this mob stupidity and have nurtured it.

I wasn’t joking when I mentioned the other day that it was becoming very cult-like.

You only have to tick off the little mantras these types trot out every time they come on here and elsewhere on the web, to realise that this is dangerously close to cult behaviour.

(I have my own opinion (a bit Monty Python like, that one),

I support Arsenal, not the manager or the players,

I only want success for the club (yeah, right, you’re the only ones who want that),

    etc etc,

all trite little one-liners packaged and marketed to them by their “leader”.

Sold to them like some witch-doctor herbs that will somehow make them invincible.

What’s worse is that it is eating away at our club.

There is no intellectual argument to be made for driving out a player like Adebeyor.

If you really want him gone, then slagging him off and making him play badly only lowers his value, further damaging the club.

Harassing players into leaving is certainly not going to make any prospective transfer candidates look at our club with envy thinking “ooh gee, I’d love to go there”.

The bottom line is that the negative approach brought by these people brings no value to the club.

It only detracts from the club.

As such, the club does not need these people.

The money they brag about bringing to the club does not cover the damage they cause.

  185. ……..I agree with both Paul and Frank……….

  186. Bernard Downes,

Is there any reason AT ALL to think that they won’t “ever turn undoubted potential into trophy winning consistency”?

  187. Oh and MikeSA……..a supporter……

  188. Yea, Happy Birthay Yogi! my apologies.

Malaysiangunner (sorry for gettin you name wrong)

Regarding the CL you said –
“So those who had left early maybe can not tolerate the deep pain in seeing the Orc and the diver and the rednose getting the better of our beloved club. It still hurts badly.”

Well this is the total opposite of support! because you are hurt/dissapointed you intern hurt the team by leaving early. The word love is used so much, “We love Arsenal!”, well love is a selfless act (not only feeling), so if these fans truly loved and supported the team as they say they do they would NEVER have left!

    Talk to me!

  189. Maria!

  190. Isn’t it ironic that the “fans” who criticise our players and manager for “having no backbone/steel”, or “giving up”, or “not being good enough”, and the very “fans” who:

1.are mentally weak and give up

2.don’t have the balls to ride the bad times out

3.Bring no value to the club

4.Basically, aren’t good enough for Arsenal

  191. …you have not learned very much in your ’50 years’, Bernard…have you?…

  192. Hey Paul……Wgwan!!!

  193. Did i get it right?

  194. …I agree with MikeSA….

  195. Is it just me or do Happy Gooner’s comments read just like Blog Head’s.

    Good post again MikeSA .

  196. Steve

Nope they read like complete and utter….

    YW

  197. :) . Good point YW.

  198. …you have opened that brandy haven’t you, YW….

  199. wahgwaan! is how I spell it

I would put a space – wa gwan

    ha ha!

  200. I agree with you, MikeSA, but I would say we have never known bad times whilst Arsene Wenger has been manager. The present time is just not quite as good as we hoped.

  201. This is really fascinating, I’ve been dipping in all afternoon and I think I’ve worked it out. There are some people who come on and say that they’re supporters but who aren’t pleased with the way the season has gone and venture an view on how things might have gone better. Then there are others who say the first lot can’t be real supporters and call them names. Then this second lot says the first lot are really to blame for everything because they aren’t good enough supporters and that they’ll be sorry when they’ve driven the manager and most of the team away. Then the second lot spend time congratulating each other on what good supporters they are and how erudite and/or insulting they’ve been. Cool. Does anything else ever happen ?

  202. lol @ Rich. No I think you summed it up pretty well. Well done.

Hello Maria, good to see you back. And right on time, since we lost Bob for a few weeks.

  203. “Does anything else ever happen ?”

Yes, sometimes a tw*t comes on and tries to be witty by giving an account of what happens on this blog.

  204. Pz,

Please refrain from cursing. Use the standard method of categorising people into “lots”. And keeping things simple. Rich is from the third lot, where things are best viewed in black/white.

  205. Happy Birthday Yogi – I hope you are enjoying a great day.

Mike S.A. that was a fantastic post, one of the best I’ve ever read!

  206. And congratulations on finishing your exams Maria!

  207. @Malayasiangunner

“Like I said Cesc saying it is different from Ade.”

    Why?

  208. No Rich, I think thats a poor analysis.

What we are saying is that the constant negativity from the fans is not productive to what we want to achieve. Calling for players to be sold and the manager to go, would that be better for the team. Did the constant complaining and booing help the team?

We are not happy that we didnt win anything but we look forward and are thankful for the players and manager we have inspite of falling short.

“Then the second lot spend time congratulating each other on what good supporters they are and how erudite and/or insulting they’ve been.”

Isnt this what the “fans” have done regarding the manager and players? have you confronted anyone when they agree with someone calling our players and manager a this and a that? and then they all agree with eachother.

Have you eloquently worked that out?

  209. And happy birthday, YW!
    21 again, is it?

  210. perry groves

    spot on Rich.

  211. Perry groves,

Stop congratulating Rich. You’re just making both of u fall into the “lot one” category. I don’t any of you want that.

Rich, see, what you did. You were an outside observer, but the very fact that you posted has brought you into the system that works here. Your sense of uniqueness doesn’t hold anymore. How about another witty comment?

  212. No, no, wait! I’m still laughing from the first one.

  213. Ateeb,

Shame Bob is missing…now who’s going to keep track of all my ‘socialising’ ?

    Passenal,

    Thanks.

    Paul,

    I did try.loool

  214. Haha. Well done Pz. Pat on your back. High five?

  215. spot on Ateeb.

  216. …which lot am I in then?…i

  217. Frank

Curiously enough, one of the pressies today was a bottle of rather nice Spanish brandy.

Oh, and an Arsenal away top which I was going to put some witty and pithy message like, “Arsene Is God” above the Number 1 with “And You’re Not Worthy” at the bottom.

Alas Mrs YW believes that should be filed under “Great Ideas Inspired By Beer Talk”.

Ah well. I’m off to replenish my, ahem, source of inspiration…

    YW

  218. …whoops…dropped an i

  219. …or..YW..it could be ‘Arsene is worthy’…and …’and you are not god’….

  220. …I think I might be in the first lot you know…but I can see me in the second lot too….

  221. …these fucking lots don’t work at all, ffs…

  222. They’re not a lot of use.

  223. …Rich that was poor…

  224. Ateeb,

Shame about Bob who’s going to catalogue all my ‘socialising’.

    Thanks Passenal.

  225. Calm down Frank. There can be sub categories to these lots. I think you’d be in the first category. Sub-categories range from (a-f). It’s really confusing, Rich never elaborated about these lots.
I’ll work on it, I don’t thin Rich would be that stupid to see the debates here as simplistic as ” Good Vs Evil”. No, no, he can’t be that big an idiot, although it did take him the whole afternoon to come up with an analysis. Maybe by the evening we’d know more about these lots categories. And sub limits and everything.

  226. …ok I await your analysis, Ateeb…but this is very worrying…

  227. …oh I see you are giving Rich another shot….if I shot him that would put me in the second lot wouldn’t it?…or would that be an improvement suggestion…in which case I would be in the first lot…wouldn’t it?…..you got any of that brandy left, YW…?

  228. Its too vague rihgt now, Frank. My highly regarded pyschoanalysis skills siggests that Rich was just too confused which side to choose, and how to join the discussions here. He broke down everything going on here in 2 lots, to start with. And lumped people into them accordingly. I think he liked the fact that the lot one won everytime, thats why he mentioned congratulating in the end. But he also felt for the lot 2 guys, because maybe to him they made sense. And moreover there are many blogs out there who would take the lot 2 guys. Anyhow, when he was deciding which side to choose, he realized he could just put his analysis into a witty comment, and put himself in a more superior position to everyone else here.

  229. Frank,
You need to get some big “I Love Wenger” banners for your stall.

  230. Song Rights Ltd

There’s a goon who leaves in the middle of defeat,
He’s got an EFIT – looks like an empty seat,

  231. …oh I see,Ateeb…

    …..fuck off, Rich…

    Meanwhile back at Colney….

“We are not affected (by transfer speculation) and sometimes it is a good thing for us because we make jokes about it when it comes out in the press,”

“We say ‘did you see that you have signed with Barcelona, once again?’ We have a laugh because it is almost always untrue….

“Many things are said to sell newspapers, but as far as we are concerned we remain pretty much relaxed.”

Almunia also hailed Wenger, adding: “Working alongside him makes you feel incredibly relaxed and at peace.

“We train hard day in, day out, but he tells us that we will only feel the pressure at the end of the week, during the game.

“We call him the boss. He is the visible face of this club, of Arsenal’s project and he is very important for the club.” ….Manuel Almunia…

  232. @ Song Rights Ltd

    lol

  233. Maria,

That’s copy right infringement. G4E could sue you for that last comment of yours.

  234. Almunia, won’t be making jokes about it when the Beyonce from Milan comes looking for him. Right doomers?:p

  235. …thanks PZ …good idea….I was thinking of an AKB banner…up on the podium above the shop…surrounded by seventeen Arsenal supporters…leather jackets…drainpipes…winkle pickers…shades…flickknives (switchblades)…made of rubber (honest)…AKB in studs on the back of the jacket….dancing in formation around the banner…clickclickclick…and a special AKB train running up and down the line…parping away like a good un….clicclickclick

  236. …I will of course do the beer bottle thing from the Warriors….’Dooooommmeeers come out to plaaayay’…..clickclickclick

  237. For a change of pace, here are some interesting comments from Arshavin from his personal website:

    - Who do you have the best understanding with on the pitch? Who are your best friends off the pitch? Who works hardest during training?
AA.: Who works hardest? You can’t give any less than 100%. The manager won’t allow this and team-mates won’t appreciate that either. Victories come through the hard work during training. We have strong discipline, everyone gives their best in training and on the pitch.
My best mates off the pitch would be Cesc, Bendtner and Toure. On the pitch I have good understanding with everyone, I wouldn’t want to single anyone out.

Do you expect to win many trophies at Arsenal? What are your expectations/hopes for next season? How many goals do you think you will score?
AA.: Of course I want to win many trophies. From the next season I’m expecting victories: in the Champions’ League and in the Premier League. How many goals will I score? I don’t want to talk about this, since my predictions never materialise.

    - What, if any type of player is Arsenal lacking right now?
AA .: I think we need to buy 2-3 players, but it’s up to our manager to decide which positions he wants to strengthen.

    - How did you adapt to life in London? What aspect do you find the most different (diet, training regime etc.)?
AA : Our training regime is pretty similar to what I’ve been doing in Russia. Food? Yes, this is where I notice the difference. I wouldn’t say English food is any better or worse than Russian, it’s just different.

Who is the best player in the world right now? Who would you like to play alongside?
AA : I’d say Messi. I’d like to play with many different players, but I realise that it’s impossible. I think the high quality of players at Arsenal will help me develop even further.

    - Being one of the oldest players in the side, do you think that it’s experience that we are lacking at the moment?
AA .: I wouldn’t say they lack experience, since Arsenal consistently plays in the Champions League and always gets to the latter stages of the competition. Thankfully, many players have had plenty of games against top opposition in the Premiership as well. I think sometimes they could do with a bit more maturity or composure. It will come, you just need time.

  238. Flint McCullough

    Bernard

You may have been going for 50 years but you don’t seem to remember how long it takes for a player or a team to reach its full potential.

People like you would have been moaning about the likes of Raddy, Peter Simpson & Tony Adams in their early years.

Not all the players you mention, for 1 reason or another, will make it but the structure is there for real success, if we can have the patience.

  239. Santino,

A bit rich of you calling any other fan a plastic. You are a chav among gooners. A disgrace to all arsenal supporters worldwide. You cant debate any point about the club with anyone here. You are neither smart nor witty. I wonder what your purpose is you pathetic loser.

  240. **^Happy Birthday Yogi’s Warrior^**
Many many happy returns of the day, and long live ACLF.
    ===

The funny thing about Arsenal fans is they’re mad at Wenger because they think they know the solution to our problems, and Wenger just doesn’t want to do it…he’s stubborn you know? This is laughable & Pathetic, because none of these fans know sh*t.

I think when Fergie didn’t win for 3 years Man United fans were mad at him, but I don’t think they told him what he needs to do. What he did though, is he went on a shopping spree and got the titles to shut the fans and put the club further into debt.

Fans have every right to be realistically disappointed for not winning something since 2005, but they absolutely have no right to interfere with what the Manager needs to do, or who he should buy….what’s next? Fans will put the team sheet before every game?

Grow up before it’s too late stupid fans, Wenger may have never walked out on a contract in his career, but there is always the first time. Only then you will know what losing really means…Idiots.

    G4E

  241. G4E, you say “till death do us part” when you get married but if one in marriage start being unfaithful, it can make that vow null and void.

  242. From Bob much earlier:

“In no doubt whatsoever though, is the fact that a section of the fans have undermined the club, it’s manager and it’s players this season. That is a disgrace on us all.”

As a season ticket holder I have never before felt so ashamed of our supporters.

I have experienced moments this season where I wished the ground would open and swallow me, whisking me away from the utter shame of hearing rabid supporters boo and heckle this amazing football club that stands head and shoulders above any other club and is run by a manager so brilliant that football (not just us) will never see his like again.

I cannot express how Arsenal supporters’ angry and spoilt reactions have left me feeling devastated this year. A strong word, perhaps; maybe a tad dramatic, but it’s the truth about how I feel. Devastated.

I believe so much in this club and what it stands for, and it frustrates the hell out of me that so many are so ignorant and blind to what is such a pure and [in this present day] rare achievement. Why do we have to blindly follow the route of all-consuming greed so prevalent in society? I fucking hate it. Football used to be a beautiful expression of escapism that we could immerse ourselves in and forget about our material woes; but now it seems it’s become that very thing, and for so many people it’s become merely an extension of a repulsive society hell bent on winning at all cost. Football has become a massive business. Yet the purity of sport (and I’ve said this before) is the celebration of competition, and the reality of business is the elimination of competition; the two should not be able to co-exist in their natural format, yet, despite this, Wenger is somehow managing to come so very close to doing just that. It’s a staggering achievement. To believe someone could even have the audacity to attempt what Wenger has in this day and age is almost beyond belief; to realise that he is so very close to achieving that is bordering on science fiction. And to bear witness to the hoards of ugly snarling faces screwed up with contempt for something their greedy brains do not possess the capacity to understand, is utterly disheartening.

I believe in Wenger more than ever.

Unfortunately I despise our repulsive supporters more than ever.

  243. Many happy returns YW.

  244. Hear, Hear, dave. Great post.

  245. Great post davebluez.

  246. Excellent Dave, Heartfelt!

Lets hope we can actaully realize what we have. My Dad and Sister are Arsenal Supporters and are somehow blinded to what Wenger has done and is doing, it borders on unbelievable as you have said. Look at our players! amazing stuff.

    Thanks Arsene!

  247. Happy birthday Yogi! Wish you have many many more!

  248. Apologies Yogi…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! And please keep up the super work.

Glass raised and hat tipped in your direction.

  249. …I agree with Davebluez…

  250. Me too

  251. SWINE FLU PROGRESS 7 more victims were claimed today, but fortunately these were mild cases. The virus, still widespread, has been a source of concern, but thankfully has not been able to mutate into a lethal strain of grovitis incapacitis. The particular mutation of the virus is considered to be simple, praying on those with poor cognitive abilities and short term memory function and high testosterone levels. The demographics are also known. Disaffected adolescent groups undergoing pubescent sociopathic behaviour, looking for outlets to vent their fury. A couple of mutations appeared at the AGM. Were later diagnosed to be the strain HN00 Brainus. Intensive research is currently on the way for a vaccine, led by the french scientist Arsene Wenger.

  252. Song Rights Ltd., absolutely fantastic song. I was reading it while listening to music and the lyrics fit the tune playing exactly. For a moment I was singing it at the emirates with 60,000+ other fans. What a moment that would be.

Well said G4E and davebluez, and the rest. This blog is returning to normalcy a bit after a patch wandering in the wilderness because of all the interlopers.

Welcome back Maria, hope the exams went well.

One more game and then it’s a long, long, long summer of sub-standard footy here in the US and wondering if there will be fallout from the loud voices of the plastic fans who have deluded themselves into thinking they are supporters.

  253. Is there any chance of finding the people who asked offensive questions at the AGM and getting their heads on pikes in time for the match on Sunday?

  254. Bernard Downes

Please permit me to make one final stab at explaining myself before I disappear.
Someone asked whether I had learned anything in my 50 years supporting Arsenal. Yes I have. Although it is frustrating to ‘only’ finish in the Top 4, it is a damn sight more difficult to support your team when they are down.
I started going regularly in 1961/62 and our finishing position in the first 5 years was 10th, 7th, 8th, 13th and 14th. It was a time when Spurs and Chelsea ruled London, and West Ham were developing their best side. A very difficult time to support Arsenal, but I did, every week at Highbury, and occasional away matches. That period in time reached its low point in 1965/66, when just 4,000 saw us lose the penultimate home match against Leeds; and then just 2 days later, the crowd grew(?) to 11,000 for the final game against Leicester. That WAS a time for recrimination and blame.
Yes, I have been through the thick and the thin, but my support for Arsenal has never waivered. What I have learned is that I have seen a few truly great players, lots of good or ordinary players and, regrettably, some poor players. The fact that I say this does not diminish my support for the team one bit.
Having got that off my chest, I really will leave you to it. Up the Arsenal.

    Regards – Bernard

  255. Yogi

Don’t know if you’ll make it this far into the comments but if you do…

    Many Happy Returns

…and thanks for not only the best Arsenal read around (apart from when we win by 3 goals or more and every paper I hate is suddenly a great read) but also a truly great blog[Full stop]

There are not many things you can read daily rarely without fail. This is one. Hope you had a good one.

post of the day there Bernard

  257. …you might have met a bloke called Solgooner in the stands, Bernard…..

  258. Paulie Walnuts

    Happy Birthday Yogi,

Great post Davebluez. The modern day `supporter` reflects society in general I`m afraid.

I really hope some of these people will stop & think before they slag our great club off on phone ins, blogs, etc. because it`s whipped up a totally unnecessary shitstorm which the media is thoroughly enjoying.

Worst of all it`s effecting a young, improving side that needs patience & support.

Get a grip & keep the faith

  259. “Arsenal fan: I don’t want Wenger to go, I want him to listen”

This is the title of a blog, hee hee, very funny.

  260. shotta-gunna

Yogi… a very happy birthday to you. You deserve every plaudit I have read so far.
Unfortunately I was trying to respond to your blog with an expose on the media but time at work did not allow.
Like davebluez said through your blog and the community posters I have come to appreciate the greatness of Wenger’s philosophy and its importance to AFC and the beautiful game as a whole.

  261. Great post Davebluez – that’s the voice of a real Arsenal supporter.

  262. Queen of Suburbia

Happy Birthday Yogi – I hope you’ve had a wonderful day.

  263. …famously the interesting point about the league game against Leeds on 5th May 1966, just before the World Cup….the fixture had been rearranged and so it caught everyone on the hop….and it coincided with a bit of a rarity in those days…Liverpool were playing Borussia Dortmund in the final of the Cup Winners Cup at Hampden Park….and it was televised live….actually live…

…but as we finished 14th that year as opposed to fourth this year you must be very, very excited about the current team constantly being in the Europe Champions League and finishing no lower than 4th for many, many years….you must feel that people who moan are whining for nothing…becuase this is a very good side…looking at standings compared to the bad old days…I bet you can hardly hold yourself back from complimenting such a great manager…and from telling the spoilt brats of today that these are great days indeed to be watching Arsenal….you must feel like getting onto the blogs and telling everyone to get behind the manager and players…….Bernard…..

  264. California Gooner

Alex IC, I don’t think it was good management. I get your point that we couldn’t afford to loose him after loosing Hleb and FlimFlam, but I would have preferrd to keep Hleb. In fact, Wenger could have gotten Eto’o in exchange, but worried about his knee problems. In retrospect (hindsight is 20/20) Eto’o is a much better player — an assassin in front of the goal, creative, and tireless in harassing defenders. A real winner.

I actually think Ade was playing above himself last season as was much of the squad. they did not seem very strong with Henry departing, but a few early season (and pre-season) victories created tremendous belief in the squad and showed the players that effort would be rewarded. Those who criticize Gallas should remember that he was the one instilling that passion and belief. Of course things fell apart without Rosicky and Eduardo, but — and this is the point– I just don’t think that level of play could be sustained. The players were really giving it their all and when disappointment set in, there wasn’t much left. So maybe, what we saw this year, was a more normal Ade. Not because of the contract, but simply because the whole team failed to find that virtuous circle where belief and effort feed on each other.

  265. California Gooner

p.s. Alex IC, I was referring to your earlier post about selling/not-selling Ade last year. I guess that wasn’t clear from my post.

  266. …well you are full of the joys of spring aren’t you you, California Gooner….

for any doom and gloomer that continues to undermine the team’s effort, I implore you to watch the video above.

you have to put a human face to these quotes. he’s just a guy trying to do his best for us. I really think so now from watching this. If he goes you have yourselves to blame

  268. Bernard Downes,

I’m in many ways a child of the 60s and I don’t really recall a time that Chelsea ruled London. The SCUM did won a couple of cups maybe, and it was definitely a lean period for the Arsenal. But I think Chelsea was even relegated once, if not twice….

Anyway…would rather talk about more modern times. I’ll be honest and admit I wasn’t a big Arsenal fan then. I was into football but only into the national team. Of course we all liked that great Real Madrid team…

I was more into boxing then. It was Summers sailing, winters Rugby, boxing in between.

  269. …took you 10 hours to construct a piece to run the manager down…..I say that is lazy fuckerishness….that is you that is California Gooner….

  270. …oh and Bernard…you are a fraud….

  271. …boxing in between what, OG?….

  272. It’s called rhetorical flourish, Frank…LOL

  273. …Bernard, was right to be impressed with Chelsea in the sixties…..

League Cup in 65…..Runner Up (they lost) in the FA Cup 67….Runner Up 2nd Division 62-63 …THAT IS SECOND DIVISION….

…oh and quite a European Campaign…semi-final of the InterCity Fairs Cup 67…

…fuck me Bernard…you must find it difficult to support the current Arsenal if you think that Chelsea in th sixties were impressive…

    …you fucking racist fraud…

  274. Davebluez, I feel your pain! Great post.

Passenal, enjoyed that interview excerpt. Have you got a link to Arshavin’s website?

  275. Frank,

I don’t recall any period in which Chelsea were impressive. Not even when they won back-to-back titles just 5 years ago.

  276. …totally agree with OG…

  277. The tiny toots might have had a better time than us in the 60s but it’s still the last time they won the league…famously in black and white.

  278. Frank is just the BEST. Trying to clear the posisonous fans from this blog.

Admission: In the 70s and 80s we in the Caribbean were fans of the Scum especially in the Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa, Gascoigne, Hoddle era. But Chelsea were just plain sh*t.

But I digress. Frank you are absolutely right about this racist fraud. Every time I read some idiotic quote about Ade being lazy, I can only conclude it is a racist stereotype. (Being of African heritage, we in the American diaspora are very familiar and sensitive to demeaning stereotypes). I am sure that Ade has also gotten the message loud and clear. Afterall Ronaldo hardly ever tracks back and Man U fans never call him lazy. Michael Owen is pulling 120k per week and hardly puts in the quality and quantity shift of Ade.

At this stage of the game, after reading all the poison about Ade, without regard for the fact that unlike Flamini and Hleb, he stayed, arguably earning 25-50% less than what he could have gotten at Milan, I have simply resigned myself to the fact that Ade must do what is best for himself and his family. If he should leave, god help Arsene Wenger. These same hypocrites who initially rejoiced at the departure of the other two, will be the 1st to crucify Wenger when they discover how difficult it is to replace Ade’s 46 goals but the acres of space he created for other players just because of his presence on the field.

PS: I remember an earlier game he pulled a hamstring in the early stages of a sprint for the ball and our great and wonderful fans began to boo. Yes sir, we get the message.

  279. SG,

All the foreign black strikers in the league get called that. And you’ll be shocked how widespread is the racist belief that he got the big bucks, the wretched African and won’t try anymore.

Don’t let’s even get started on the African+French meme.

  280. OG

You’re the first post I read and the last as I log on

    That’s commitment !

  281. Shotta Gunna

Leaving aside possible stereotypes of afro players being lazy let’s just examine what ones eyes can see

ADE in his breakthrough season chasing every ball down, a rough battering ram but full of honest sweat

    versus

ADE this year strolling around like Henry did in his last season, remonstrating with players for not putting the ball right on his foot

Henry earned the right to be the big cheese with 4 glorious years – ADE hasn’t

  282. alanG,

You see what you want to see. Simple.

That is not how some of us see it.

    Simple.

Injury effected, not at best, at time low on confidence. Maybe.

But lazy is an attack on his integrity as a player.

  283. Funny thing is,

Wenger atacked this exact ignorant comment.

Players may not always be able bring their best games, what always follows is some ignorant sods then say they are not trying.

Laughable. A reflection, on those that are not capable of simply saying ” he is not at his best “.

    Always the same.

  284. …why the hell are you still running our players down, AlanG…you silly man…can you not read the runes man…our support is in question….not the players…people like you have had your chance all fucking season to denigrate….(good choice of word) our players….. now is not the time to run down any of our players in public…it is time to get behind the squad and demonstrate support…if you don’t …you are a fuckwit…and no use to man nor beast and certainly not to Arsenal…

  285. Eboue aint trying, Denilson aint trying…

Diaby aint interested, Song is lazy, Ade is not trying, uninterested and lazy.

    Bloody hell.

    Listen to yourselves.

  286. Wow we must have some potential. To achieve what we have with all these lazy gits. If someone can just get these players to shake a leg, we’ll never lose again.

  287. …I have an image of YW lying on the kitchen floor…empty bottle of brandy in one hand…favourite Arsenal programme in the other….fast asleep…smile on his face…the remains of chocolate cake around his mouth..and Mrs YW..lovingly throws a quilt over him….and as she closes the kitchen door behind her…she looks back and smiles…softly pulls the door to….and mutters…’there’s only one Arsene Wenger’ to herself as quietly climbs the stairs….

    ….Arsenal…

  288. …I agree with Danny…

  289. They cannot understand that we look like a bunch of fools by dissing our own team, so they continue oblivious to what is taking place.

When someone is down you encourage them to lift their heads and not tell them how worthless they are.

Why is common sense so uncommon?

  290. Frank – Danny

I can only say what I felt I saw. Would I boo him – absolutely not

Give me the ADE of last season and I am happy

I acknowledge he had a number of niggling injuries, that his confidence got lowered

but then he hid a little, felt sorry for himself

Not what an Arsenal player should do –

But if he does what a true Arsenal player should do and go to Wengers Office and tell him – I will stay and repay your faith and this contract, I will be happy to have him

But Wengers recent comments are ominous. He looks to have reached a conclusion that ADE is a disruptive influence and he has to be sold for the sake of teh squad and unity

It is hard not to also reach that viewpint when you hear his murmurings of love toward Milan

Let Wenger do his job – reflect after the season ends and take the players sounding. What he decides then – stick or twist with ADE, is fine with me as he is best placed to know if ADEs heart is here

  291. alanG – I don’t know why I arse myself to respond but a few facts:
    * Ade has suffered three leg injuries this season all with varying periods of absence. Upon his return he has never been able to play 100%.
    * Ade has ben denied the service he had last year with Hleb, Rosicky and Cesc giving him killer balls
    * Arsenal’s midfield this season has been a work-in-progress after the summer departures and Cesc returned from the Euro’s knackered. We have lacked the creativity and penetration, some of which returned with Cesc coming back from injury and Arshavin’s arrival, but it is no where as sharp as 07-08
    * Teams/defenders have worked out how to contain Ade especially whe he is leading the line. Shadow him with two physical center-halfs and snuff out the passes from midfield. Both Roma and Villareal employed these tactics to perfection.

The problem with most of our fans is their underlying biases and prejuidices to Adebayor. It has nothing to do with his contribution to the club. As I said before it signifies how childish and immature is a large section ofthe Arsenal fanbase. Afterall if ManU fans can ignore Ronaldo’s frequent whoring of himself to Real Madrid, why are Arsenal fans so bent out of shape.

  292. Well done for not booing him.

  293. Wenger must be supported – given more time
    He has earned this right

And to those who say it’s time to change, we should say – what’s the alternative?

But let’s not scold each other for having an honest assessment about the players seasons on this blog

Guys – they aren’t reading it, crying every time we say something unflattering

Many posters on here have critical things to say but the majority are constructive and reasoned. I don’t see them as the kind of supporter rabidly foaming at the Emirates screaming and hissing at ADE or Eboue

    except Howard

  294. …now Paul N when you consider that from a philosophical point of view ‘common sense’ is related to concepts which include intuition, pre-theoretic belief, ordinary language, the frame problem, foundational beliefs, good sense, endoxa, and axioms…it is no surprise that it is not that common….

  295. Thanks, Passenal!

  296. Shotta Gunna

    Thanks for your response

I know that ADE was injured and lacked support

and I know that in a good team creating chances, he can be effective

But I do feel that his attitude let him down and his own comments were poorly judged – that’s my view

I’m not asking that we put him up against the wall and shoot him

  297. California Gooner

Frank (on May 19, 2009 at 9:22 pm)… I suppose you’re right. That is water under the bridge. But I’m sneaking this in while at work, so perhaps I’m not feeling so joyous. In general, I’m an optimist when it comes to the current Arsenal project…

What really scares me is the thought of Wenger leaving. Yogi seems to downplay the RM comments, but I’m not so sure. As much as most of us love Arsene, there has been a lot of negativity around. When someone gives as much as he gives and cares as much as he cares that has to affect him.

  298. Calif Gooner

I too fear that AW may leave

He looked distraught and broken after the CL semi

But he has to have thicker skin than that. Of course there will be criticism after 4 seasons without a trophy. That is teh expectation level he has built

But he should not expose himself to it – or allow it the air by responding

He should reflect on the season with those who matter to him and whose counsel he values

And this Board needs to back him financially if he decides to do some strengthening. He has built the Clubs revenue to a level where there should be finances there for him to buy prudently, which we all know he would do

  299. …OK Californai Gooner…AW is going nowhere…and my guess is that very few of the current first team squad are either….the RM reports are just nonsense if you read or listen to the original…that RM run their club in this way with no admonishment from UEFA is a disgrace…Arsenal supporters should be out on the blogs demanding blood for the fucking disgrace that that fascist-rooted pile of shit called Real Madrid truly is…but instead we tremble and turn on our own manager and players…Real Madrid is not a great club…it is a corruption and abomination…the Galactico idea was sheer decadence….they are dead…yesterdays story…dry as fucking dust….

…you want to go with the future…stick to Arsenal…and Arsene Wenger… we fear no club in the world….

    ….Arsenal….

  300. alanG,

Unlike Denilson I went missing in the middle. LOL

  301. Bernard Downes

    Frank,

Apologies for coming back yet again but a friend has just told me that you think I am a racist fraud. So, is it racist to want a new centre-back (black or white) with English football experience. If it is racist, I would be obliged to plead guilty, but of course its not. As for a fraud? Short of sitting down together and swapping our respective histories, there is no answer to that one. All I can say is that I am 60 years old; that I have supported Arsenal for 50 of those years; and between 1965 and 2001 I went home and away. And if Arsenal were ever to be relegated, god forbid, I would still be a supporter. Would you?

    Ole Gunner,
You surely don’t have to like another team to acknowlege their achievements. Spurs couple of cups in the 60s did include the first modern Double, two other FA Cups and a Cup Winners Cup Final win by 5-1. And, like it or lump it, both they and Chelsea had massive support in the 60s in comparison to ours.

    Regards – Bernard

  302. http://www.redaction.org.uk/front.html

…I for one will be on the March and outside the stadium to support Le Boss…..

…wouldn’t miss it for the world….

    ….Arsenal….

  303. …Nice try Bernard…nicle selective response…

‘…Arsene HAS been one of our all-time great Managers, but now is the time for him to go. He thinks he can mould any European/African youngster into a top class player – apart from Cesc, he hasn’t done so for several years now.
He appears to have a totally negative view of mature english defenders. If he had bought Woodgate in Jan 2008 we would have won things in 2007/08…’.

…this is the comment of yours to which I was responding….

…myabe you are 60 …maybe not…but if you are you are quite a young man….

  304. ….we don’t need you Bernard…fuck off…

  305. …firstly Dave Ross…big ups for Brentford….secondly….Carragher is not a great defender….thirdly…Arsenal have a unique playing style and do not need an old-fashioned centre -half…..an Arsenal centre-half needs to be fast, skilful, aware of position and space…and prepared to be the first line of attack….but most of all needs to have worked endlessly with his co-defenders so that there is an almost telepathic understanding…maybe your guy fits the bill…lets see what AW thinks…

  306. Bernard Downes

Sorry Frank, I will be there supporting Arsenal until they carry me off in a coffin…..and, when I think something can be improved, I will voice my concerns over a pint in the pub or in print. But when I am in the ground my support for the whole squad is TOTAL.

    Regards – Bernard

P.S. Didn’t your parents ever tell you that swearing is juvenile.

  307. …I stopped listening to my parents more than fifty years ago, Bernard……my parents and grandparents swore like troopers….in fact …..they always told me that it was only adults who were allowed to swear…

…in all my years no parent has ever told a child that swearing is juvenile….

    ….you need to do a lot more research, son…try a different character…

  308. …Arsene Wenger is the best manager this club has ever had…bar none…we as supporters should be full square behind him…now….

    ….Arsenal….

  309. Bernard Downes

Frank, I won’t comment on your parents, that would be disrespectful and thats not my style, but I would be surprised if they ever expected to see your swear in such a gratuitous fashion.
Sorry, but the F word has no effect on me, or on my views.

    Regards – Bernard

  310. …oh dear oh dear oh dear…

  311. …truth…you know what stuns me about that awful clip…those fucking morons are being paid for that conversation…not a fact in sight…paid for a pub conversation….the pathetic state of football in England today…it beggars belief…

  312. …these people are not fit to lick Arsene Wengers boots…

  313. frank the wanck if you were listening they wer licking his boots mate(for the exception of souness)but hes a cun. anyway

  314. California Gooner

Frank, agree re: RM, but I think Wenger is a might tired of the negativity surrounding the club in many quarters.

  316. no idea who the heck he is but he sure got a point..

  317. The trouble is chkmiaot, all fans are being tarred by the same brush when they are actually a small, but noisy minority.

  318. The problem is there are too many foreigners in the team.

This creates problem with regards to cohesion because of differences in culture. As a result, a breakdown in morale or dressing room problem is very difficult to resolve.

There is also a problem with dedication and love for the club. Its all about the money, ask Adebayor.

Some English players coming into the first team will do good for the ambition of the club.

    I’m hoping that in 2/3 years time, Gibbs, Gavin Hoyte, Frimpong, Jay Thomas, Wilshere, Bartley will come in to replace players like;

    Clichy-Gibbs
    Sagna-Hoyte
    Denilson-Frimpong
    Diaby-Jay Thomas
    Eboue-Tom Cruise/Ayling
    Toure-Bartley
    Bendtner-Rhys Murphy
    RvP-Wilshere

There are too many mercenaries in the team for it to succeed again.

If this happens, we will have the cohesion, the drive, the love that we need to win titles.

  319. ‘all evil needs is for good people to do nothing.’

ok evils a bit extreme, but stupid definatley.

Your absoloutley right passenal which is why its time for true arsenal supporters to start making a bit of noise of our own. The game against stoke is the perfect time for us to raise the roof and let our manager and our players know that we want to keep them. That we believe in them.

    lets make it count

    ……..ARSENAL……..

  320. nationalist alert

  321. …we need to drive people like Patrick out of the club….if he was ever a supportor…which I doubt….there is definite BNP/racist agenda at large…I would be very surprised if similar messages to the ‘Patrick’ one are not being sent to other clubs’ blogsites too….

    ….Arsenal….

  322. Frank I agree – it’s always at times of economic crisis when the far right see an opportunity to tap into the deeply held prejudices, which lurk beneath the surface in many people. I feel very uncomfortable reading some of the OTT criticism directed at certain team members accompanied by comments about their nationality. There is no denying what is at the bottom of those criticisms.

  323. …one of their common ploys is to pop up as a poorly researched character….often as an older supporter…the story is often very flat with very obvious references from Arsenal reference material….’I was there when….the fog during the war…lowest gate….etcetc…’…..one or two may be genuine but I doubt it….

  324. Patrick

That is without a shadow of doubt the biggest pile of shit I have read in the comments section since Howard last posted here.

Take your pox-ridden nationalist philosophies somewhere else.

  328. Either that or a carajillo. I suspect your method will be more effective and perhaps more permanent. Mine on the other hand, perhaps more fun…

  329. YW . . . What is carajillo?

  330. …both might be even more fun…

“Chelsea had massive support in the 60s in comparison to ours” – What???

They were bigger spenders & were marginally more successful c1965-1970 but we were always the bigger & better supported club.

65/66 was a dark season for us. Billy Wright’s team, which included 8 (7 regulars) of the 70/71 double winning squad, struggled to 14th place & in consecutive games lost 1-2 & 3-0 away to Blackburn. The latter game knocking us out of the FA Cup & precipitated the transfer of our 2 star player George Eastham & Joe Baker.

I went to the Leeds game, when only 4k turned up. As Frank says it was a re-arranged game being played the same time as Liverpool’s CWCF. Live football was very rare in those days.

A month before that we played WBA at home with 8k in the crowd. I remember I nearly missed that game because the club was so poor in its communications that I did not know it was on until very late. Had to stand up my girlfriend of the time & was thus dispatched from the relationship.

My next girlfriend turned out to be my wife, who still hasn’t got rid of my in spite of my mistress AFC.

The low crowds that season were a protest at 13 years of being nowhere near anything- not even a semi final.

Today it is “pigs in shite” in comparison, which makes me wonder what makes Bernard tick.

  333. Flint McCullough

I meant to point out that Blackburn were rock bottom at the time & were relegated.

These critics are full off sh!2#T. 100 MILLION to 200 Million my foot. If we want to spend these amount of monies it will not with these jobless fools. I will want AW to spend it. The case for 20 to 30 mio pound singning of at least a world class good CB is strong , I would even drop my idea of a DM as Song is improving every game in that role. We will have Dudu, Arsh, RvP , Walcott, Bendy and Ade( if he stays) attack. More than enough and supported by Nasri and Cesc. Then we train like mad how to defend like a team especially for Nasri and Walcott.

    We can and will conquer.

Fungunner , while I can answer you why Cesc situation with Barca and Ade is different I will not get into it. No point.

Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

  338. “The trouble is chkmiaot, all fans are being tarred by the same brush when they are actually a small, but noisy minority.”

I agree. The anti-supporters are just a small group of distended, stinking arseholes.

  339. I will puke the next time I hear an Arsenal fan say they just want players to try. The team needs battlers and triers etc. Those are the players the anti-Arsenal Arsenal fans don’t like. Once you’re perceived as being a flair player, they like you. Once you’re perceived as not being so they detest you.

  340. Malaysiangunner

    OG

Your post is not clear. You mean anti supporters do not like triers?

Being a flair player and then a trier are not mutually exclusive. Cesc come to mind. He has flair and you can see him make diving tackles. Even the Orc of ManUres has both falir and tackles hard. Ditto Tevez.
Look at RvP , he is not against putting the foot in once ina while.

    Up The Arse!!!

  341. Annoying myth of the day is that Wenger can’t go to Real Madrid because he prefers to work with youth.

    How stupid can people be?

Wenger might have discovered a lot of great talent early from George Weah to Thierry Henry to Cesc Fabregas.

But he also bought a lot of ready-made stars, from Davor Suker to Jurgen Klinsmann to William Gallas.

I am still amazed that so many don’t get that Wenger’s youth stuff might offer him emotional fulfilment, but it is first and foremost just a means to compete against richer clubs.

If he has an unlimited budget he’d get players according to his budget.

Mourinho and Chelsea for a large part just went after Wenger & Ferguson targets. Wenger was after Drogba, Essien, Malouda….the next thing Moaninho comes in with the big fat check book and pays double.

Do you think Ronaldo would have gone to Man poo if Wenger had an unlimited budget?

The one thing Wenger won’t stick from Real Madrid is interference. Perez for example, makes it clear that Real Madrid want to build the club around Wenger’s philosophy going into the future. So even the philosophy thing is there. But I don’t see Wenger accepting from Perez that he has to buy player X or player Y must play this weekend etc.

  342. @Malaysiangunner

“Fungunner , while I can answer you why Cesc situation with Barca and Ade is different I will not get into it. No point.”

It wasn’t Barca, it was Real Madrid. So go on, explain. You’ve obviously got the time, since you’re posting here this morning. May I suggest that you know deep down that it’s no different, but you just like Cesc and you don’t like Adebayor and that’s all it is.

    ****
‘Bernard’, ‘Patrick’, whoever you are, take your racism and xenophobia back to your BNP meetings, where it belongs. We’re on to you.

  343. MG,

To me anti-Arsenal Arsenal fans are those who make a habit of slating our players, the club, the manager, and being negative about everything (like Chavs).

I very often hear them say that they hate the players they hate because they don’t try. But it’s a smokescreen. They hate them because they’re not flair players.

Denilson’s quiet effectiveness is disrespected because he isn’t a silky dribbler like Arshavin.

  344. Ole to be fair there are loads of annoying myths floating around today – not just the one!

  345. @ OG

“I very often hear them say that they hate the players they hate because they don’t try. But it’s a smokescreen. They hate them because they’re not flair players.

Denilson’s quiet effectiveness is disrespected because he isn’t a silky dribbler like Arshavin.”

And it’s ironic, because those players are the ones who provide the “steel” or the “backbone” to the side which the moaners are always calling for. The grit around which the pearl coalesces.

That snobbery is particularly hard on Denilson. because he actually IS a very skilful player, but he has largely subjugated his flair play to the demands of his position.
