The Original Emmanuel Featuring Bob, Cesc And Kolo

Just in case Arsene was short of advice, un petit plus came his way as the original Emmanuel flicked his tousled locks in the direction of the sinking broadcaster, Setanta, and offered some wise words. No, not “I’ve come to fix the fridge“, but:

Arsene is extremely intelligent, he is a visionary. I am not saying that he should change his ways, but if he made slight changes and managed to find a compromise between youth and experience, like Manchester and every dominant team in Europe do, he would find the right mix. But it means spending more money.

Insightful stuff and with football management being so simple and easy, it is hard to understand why more former professionals do not take the plunge into the job, instead of choosing the extremely challenging environment of the pundit’s sofa. I have yet to read anything in the papers or see anyone on TV that actually addresses the reasons for the club’s current predicament on the pitch. Everyone just wants the club to follow the Viv Nicholson route and Spend, Spend, Spend without actually coming up with the necessary funding analysis that goes with it. Still, that would mean that people would have to think for themselves, an abhorrance from which many former players would never recover.

There will no doubt be a plethora of stories this summer about who is joining or which Centre Back or Defensive Midfielder Arsene should sign. With United threatening to streak away from everyone in the money race, signing Pavel Progrebynak would not be the worst move, raising the cost of a replica shirt from £40 to £100 with a full name on the back.

Curiously enough, the perceived wisdom of signing players is no longer emerging from within. Robin van Persie believes that retaining the services of the current squad is as important:

The main thing for me is that we stay together. If we lose three or four every year it is hard to get the spirit in. Hopefully we can stay here and have a real go at it

It is a crucial aspect. Last summer was a time of upheavel even though some chose to stay. A repeat of that is not going to be welcome. Perhaps Mr van Persie you would like to be so good as to sign your new contract and help this process along the way?

Kolo Toure meanwhile explained his own traumas from the past twelve months:

I have been here a long time, and when I saw some players leaving the Club last year that was difficult for me. Then when we didn’t start the season well I was scared. You start to think that maybe the Club don’t need you anymore.

When it’s like that and you are 28 you have to think about yourself as well. But I came back, I’m playing at the moment and I hope that will carry on. There is still time on my contract and I hope the Club will show me that they need me.

The insecurities of the profession are rarely spoken of but in drawing attention to his age, I think Toure has provided an insight into the negative aspect of Arsene’s ‘over 30s‘ policy. That Toure’s contract is probably up around the time he hits that age is no coincidence and seeing an ever more youthful set-up around him probably exacerbates those insecurities. Add into that mix the injuries and loss of form that the last African Cup of Nations induced, little wonder that he was not the happiest of bunnies.

However, he is at the peak of his career and it would be a mistake to suggest that he is no longer of any use to the squad. With Gallas being 31 and still susceptible to injury, Toure can always pretty much guarantee himself 20 – 30 games in a season, if not more. He must have been very hurt to have been perceived as the fall guy for the defensive woes at times, especially since Gallas inflicted some of the disharmony through his off-the-field actions. Hopefully, this is all behind Toure and he can continue to perform at the level we all know he is capable of.

Anyway, another yah boo sucks came from Arsene although this looks suspiciously as if it may have been a quote from last week:

We have a team which is 22 years old (on average), why should we look for revolution? That would be stupid and not responsible. I still believe that when you have responsibilities, you have to make decisions and stand up for that. Until now we have not done too badly. I do not think that the team need major investments.

The feisty responses that have come from Wenger suggest that he is running out of patience with the negativity from without. Either that or as he gets older, he becomes more cantankerous, a malaise that afflicts us all. No? Oh, that will just be me then.

Finally an unashamed plug for The Gooner Review which as their website says is, a FEATURE-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY film made by GOONERS for GOONERS on the 2008 – 2009 season. The film will highlight all the key talking points of the season and will feature ex-players including Bob Wilson, Gooner celebs and the fans who go every week to support their team“.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Another great post YW

Why hasn’t RvP signed yet, you would think he would be the 1st to sign.

Walcott’s signature was excellent for the club.

A few more will be nice.

  2. A-1 YW. Very insightful.

I really learnt something from your section on Toure – the understandable insecurities of older players. Something more for the gaffer to balance. H’mm.

  3. ChrisGoona and YW,

I hate to say it but unless Arsene brings in couple of “experienced” players, RVP will leaving the Emirates and possibly on a free. Why do I think this? I noticed that at one point he slammed his hands on the ground in frustration in the last game. The last player I saw doing this was Henry and he left a season or so later. Some players simply don’t have the patience to stay around that long nowadays.

  4. We already have experienced players.

We just don’t have experienced FIT players.

  5. I shall remember that Vertino. Every time a player slams his hands on the pitch, it means he will leave his club in two years. Very useful piece of information.

  6. What if he falls and his lands land on the pitch in a slamming type fashion….does he have to leave?

  7. rvp not signed yet cos he wants to see what happens at the club this summer first. at the game on sunday he looked very disapointed with walcotts stupid runs that lead nowhere. every time walcott had the ball he chose glory instead of looking for rvp. this has left rvp very frustrated (watch how he responds to it live).
i like walcott, however it is clear that he cannot finish. ian wright suggested in the sun yesterday that walcott should play down the middle. sorry wrighty that is the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard. all walcott has at the moment is pace. he needs a good few years before he will live up to his promise (providing he works very hard at training gorund).

  8. Lol Consolsbob, perhaps its exaggerating things a little you wouldn’t be surprised if he left would you? Why else has he not signed a new contract yet, otherwise?

  9. QoS

    That is Wenger’s fundamental problem.

He may be overstocked in midfield but if you look at how often AW was down the bare bones through injury, there might be scope for a couple of more!

By contrast, there is Room at the Inn in defence and attack. Eduardo seems as if he will be fit for Croatia but there is an inherent risk with him playing those games rather than being rested ready for next season.

Likewise the centre of defence is lacking cover. Silvestre is a full back with the ability to play centrally but I would not want him there all season.

    YW

  10. Vertino

That is down to Wenger telling the players to forget about contracts about four weeks ago. We do not know what is happening with RvP’s contract. For all we know, it could be with lawyers doing their lawyeree things ready for signature.

I would be surprised if it got to the stage where he left on a free in any case. Most likely, if he declared he wanted to leave, Arsenal would cash in. Perhaps a tad of patience rather than pessimism would be more appropriate over this contract negotiation?

    YW

  11. Why should RVP sign a new contract now before he see”s who is brought in in the summer? If we have another summer when we sign the likes of Silvestre and Biscoff(WHO?) Why would he stay.If we sign quality he will stay

  12. We don’t need player but retaining the current plays and Arsen too.

  13. Yes Wenger did say to not talk about contract discussions, I was just surprised to see Theo signing and the rest (RVP) not following suit. For me I was disapointed when RVP did what he did on the pitch, our finishing left much to be desired but frustration should never been shown like that. I feel that only hinders the younger players. RVP has more confidence about himself because he has had less injuries this season and enjoyed a better season in terms of goals and assists provided.

  14. Alex Ice Cream

I hear the arguments about RvP wanting to see who we buy before signing but I feel that he owes us something. We have stood by him when he was constantly injured and offered him a new deal with a large payrise.

AW has made it clear that he wats to keep RvP so enough talk Robin and more writing.

  15. AIC, Exactly that. This has been RVP’s best season so far….

  16. i agree we need to keep all our players apart from Sylvestre

but if RVP does not sign new contract before season starts Wenger needs to cash in

  17. Vertino,

Possibly TW was further along the contract route than RvP?

    YW

  18. …players do not normally write their own contracts…they just sign them…..Theo’s contract was first in line….RvP will sign very shortly I am sure….once the lawyers and administrators have done their stuff….and I for one will be delighted….

  19. …btw…AIC…you have not stood by RvP…so less of the ‘we’ please….

  20. alright YW, fair enough. I look forward to RVP showing his loyalty to the Arsenal cause.

Moving on to other discussions, I was just thinking, what does Adebayor need to do in order to prove himself again to those who are slagging him off recently? Personally I feel people have been a little too harsh about him. I just seem to think that unless he scored over 30 goals next season (if he stayed) he will always be a target and that is not good surely because he knows a couple of misses and he will be booed right off the pitch.

  21. Vertino. What Yogi said.

  22. sign a new contract?

  23. Aneta,

I did’nt know you could read Van Persie’s mind. How do you know the deal is not delayed due to legalese or any other natural delay. Why all the sh*t stirring all the time? What do you want to prove?

  24. mario from MALTA

    swap adebayor with ronaldinho

  25. Vertrino @ 12:22 pm – “I look forward to RVP showing his loyalty to the Arsenal cause.”

May I suggest you have missed the real issue:
    - Let’s hope if and when RVP signs his contract the fans remain loyal to the player.

  26. Vertino

The media are ensuring that enough fires are lit so that they can back up their summer of transfer rumours. Adebayor will struggle to win over people simply because of the pre-conceptions about him that exist, something he does little to change in his PR. Could he win people over with a 30 goal season? Yes, if he scored the goals that won the ECL, EPL, FAC, CC and the Eurovision Song Contest.

Everywhere you look in the squad, little tinderboxes are being exposed to severe heat. Liverpool have fought those off by seemingly finishing runners-up. Chelsea will be a good source of fun for hacks with Drogba and a new manager coming in but Arsenal? That’s where they scent blood.

A pity Newcastle won the other night in that respect as it would have been somewhere attention could have been deflected.

    YW

  27. Yogi – it seems to me that any decisions re: adding players are essentially a question of how much “risk” is Wenger prepared to take?

Are our current levels our “natural” level? Or does he risk that he’s unlikely to see anything like those levels again?

If he expects to lose 5/6 first team players on a regular basis then for sure, he’ll add to the squad.

The ANC may feature in his thoughts also, as we’ll lose both Eboue and Song plus Ade. That sort of suggests a right footed Centre Back who can play Right Back would be ideal!

  28. Yogi…

was concerned to see your use of ‘sinking’ to describe Setanta this morning…what is the current feelings re their future from those in the know in the UK?

here in the states they have become indispensable…for 15 bucks a month they give you approx half the EPL games, FA cup, SPL, some CL, Champioship and a couple of good studio programmes incl Jose’s puppets…and all the best rugby…none requiring ppv…

where we once just had Fox(Murdoch) doing just half the EPL with anything special like the cup final being ppv life has improved greatly…but now we read Murdoch has outbid ESPN for the CL…so byebye HD and hello ppv…

Setanta Sports has been a helluva good buy here in the states, its demise would be a sad day.

  29. Oh and Kolo will go to the ANC as well!

Yep its hard to see how we won’t sign a Centre Back!

Adebayor: At this stage in my career it’s about money

Emmanuel Adebayor has risked alienating himself from Arsenal fans following an interview serialised in the Daily Mail where he suggested at this stage in his career, money is all important.
The Togolese striker is asked by the BBC Africa Sports editor, Farayi Mungazi: ‘How important is money to footballers? A lot of them say it is not about the money. Is that true?’ to which the player, heavily linked with a move to AC Milan and Barcelona, replied:
“It is not true, it is about money.”
“You are talking about in life and it is about money. When we are young, of course we played because we loved the game, we play because we were passionate about the game.”
“But now as soon as you reach a stage where you are professional and playing Champions League, after all those things we are talking about money.”
“If it is not because of money, what am I going to be playing for Arsenal for? If it is not because of money I don’t think I would go to Arsenal to play. I would stay in my country, I would stay Lome where everyone loves me.”
“If its not because of money, I would not have come to Europe.”
Adebayor has put in a string of below par performances recently and has at times looked disinterested. Last week the former Monaco striker revealed that he is in regularly contact with AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani.

…….What an utter dipshit, it’s like he has no control over what he’s saying and has no idea what kind of an effect it will have on his popularity.

  31. I really hope nobody leaves this season if we manage to start preseason injury free squad I really believe we will be unstopable next season….!!! Alex that Bischoff who?? reminds me of the Wenger who……Aneta thinks that bashing the team illustrates intelligence and rolls with a considerable crowd……watch out MH will soon be after you also what was the rice link about I can’t access it!!

  32. first move. get of the 1 footed footballer with the big ego rvpg

  33. Vertino

Henry was one of our greatest players… loyal, was our captain, score 100s of goals…. and won loads of trophies with us.

So RvP will do all that too.. wicked

  34. Vertino

    RvP is simply a winner

  35. Bischoff Who? yes name me one thing he has done in an Arsenal shirt?

AS FOR FANS SAYING WE SHOULDNT SIGN EXPERIENCE.WHAT WAS ARSHAVIN THEN?

  36. ChrisGoona, that is the worrying thing isn’t it?

Showing frustration of that sort on the pitch for me is never acceptable. Henry got away with it slightly because of what he achieved with the club.

I’ve always thought highly of RVP. He is immensely gifted no doubt about it, dare I say even more gifted than Henry himself.

But like RVP said himself the game relies not only on technique but also on mental attributes. That is why when RVP did what he did against Chelsea I was not happy about it. Small amount in the whole game but it said quite a fair bit.

  37. Eddie McGinty

that is 1 of them interviews which could have been twisted so easily.

He is asked by African Sports – so with all due respect to anyone, we know why most African players move abroad.. poverty is an issue. We all try to look out for number 1 firstly and our families – why should he care about us. In Italy, SPain etc players sometimes move leagues to find a better league. Im sure that is why Ade moved too, but as i said, these words are definately twisted.

  38. Its important keep the team togather but, not players, like ade who feel is just helping the team. I rather have bentner.

  39. Vertino

I think if u take a step back to reality, look at how the team came from a 21 unbeaten run to 2 semi-finals…. you can understand his and anyones frustration. These guys take the stick week in week out… we rely on them and pressurise them every game to perform, every minute of their lives to be professional while playing for Arsenal.

    Give him a break

  40. Ade really needs to stop talking to the press.

Wenger already made a jab about how unsettling the will he/won’t pronouncements were last season. I can’t see him letting it go another summer…

  41. ….ah…selective reading, Aneta…do keep up, old thing…….your responses need to be more considered….not really of a very high standard at the moment now are they?….be honest…

  42. shotta-gunna

YW @12:46 pm – Lighting fires, stirring up shit, destabilization of players and fans all mean more readers, web site hits and thus more commercial-advertising opportunities. To see how the game is played go read the headlines at NewsNow or football365.
I submit to you that Arsenal is a convenient target because AFC is perceived as a foreign team, which does not adhere to the the credo that you need an English spine to succeed. Even more threatening to the media is AW’s refusal to conform to the conventional wisdom that you must out-spend your rivals to succeed.

  43. …what did RvP do against Chelsea that has so upset you, Vertino?…

  44. Ade’s problem is he talks too much..

he has done alot more for Arsenal than Bendtner, and despite his lazy body language, he works his socks off for the team. They all do.

He seems to be an intelligent guy if i dare say that.. got himself a new contract, always loves talking football, and to the media. Wenger should just slap him round the ear and tell him why the supporters get on his back.

Because when it comes down to matchday, i think near enough every arsenal fan, if they were in the managers seat, they would pick Ade over Bendtner. Bendtner will come good and is a very promising player.. but Ade carried the team all of last season. Why does every1 doubt him that he cant do it again??

  45. Eddie M … re: comments from Ade.

You have taken it completely out of context. Ade is NOT talking about his Arsenal career at all. He is addressing an African constituency (I know Farayi Mungazi quite well), through BBC (which has the largest listenrship of any radio station in Africa, something like 30-40 million ++).

He is talking about real issues, big issues, in Africa about our footballers leaving the continent for greener pastures. Why? Because in Togo, Ade might be ‘lucky’ to earn USD2000 per month, maybe a little more. That is why he leaves.

You’re barking up the wrong tree, in the wrong forest, on the wrong continent, with the wrong dog. Woof woof.

  46. ….well said, ZP….context is everything in a conversation…added to which the story surfaced in the Daily Wail…ought to raise any Arsenal supporters suspicions…

  47. Shotta talks both truth and sense …

  48. Frank, see comment 11:38,

ChrisGoona, frustration in a game where you have outplayed your opponents for much of the game yet find yourself losing 3 or 4-1 is inevitable but there are better ways of showing this surely. I didn’t see RVP take one shot in anger when he had the ball. If I’m incorrect on this one, then I’m guilty as charged.

  49. I quite like Bischoff. Oops. Have I said the wrong thing? Good buy I thought. AW did say at the time it was a risk, but one that might just be worth it.

  50. ZimPaul

Most people are scared of what is different to their own. Wenger comes along with new ideas, innovative ideas, and a plan that will lift Arsenal to the top. They cant handle it.

If Wenger changes the system in which football was sucessfull up till now,… they will all have to. I think in the economic climate that we are now facing… they will have to anyway. Wenger is just smarter and has already made the adjustments. The board and club are preparing for what will come, and for possibly what will close a few clubs down. Its a shame they cant see it… and its a shame that english ownership is almost a thing of a past at English football clubs.

  51. Vertino

He just got back from injury and was played in an unfamiliar role

what is your problem with him exactly

  52. Hi Maria,

The Pat Rice link was that to an official statement of AFC stating that Pat Rice is NOT going to retire this summer as was speculated in the media. It begs the question – on what basis does the media print rumours under the guise of fact.

  53. Re-reading those coments by Ade, I must say I love the guy. So honest and real. No bullshit. Every African understands immediately. He’s gone up in my estimation.

  54. ….’AW’s refusal to conform to the conventional wisdom that you must out-spend your rivals to succeed’…this is really the cause of a lot of the antipathy towards the club…

…the English spine element is the province of one or two rabid pundits and ceratin publications including the Daily Wail….but much of the criticism is not English….

….the real heart of the matter though is that the football establishment in England is based in the NorthWest…the Mancs and Liverpool are the only clubs for many, many of the officials, press, media…they have a terror of domination by London clubs….

…outside of England I am not sure that people quite understand the bad feeling between North and South particularly between cities….. this stems largey from the fact that London is a far superior city to Northern ones and Londoners are far more intelligent, wordly, better looking, better read, more sophisticated…you have to feel quite sorry for these poor f*ckers in the North West really….it rains all the time and football is all they have….

  55. …Vertino see ConsolsBob @ 11.45pm and QoS @ 11.46pm…I agree with them…

  56. …Vertino you are guilty as charged….

  57. Alex Ice Cream

Why are people using some dodgy quotes in the Daily Mail against Ade?

Its the Daily Fail for ffs!

  58. Fire Wenger!

Nice post, YW! I like the last para, and I can assure you that cantankerousness is proportional to the square of the age….it will only get worse!

ONe of the biggest frustrations I have is the way in which our opponents commit fouls on us and get away scot free. Arsene says we are the most fouled team in the league and I believe him.

This never happened in the days of Paddy. He struck fear in the hearts fof our opponents (including that of Keane) and I am surprised that Wenger has never looked for a replacement in Paddy’s mental mould. Diaby is a pussycat in comparison.

Gilberto, while not in the Paddy mould, had steel, which he injected into the team when he was captain. I still don’t understand why Wenger decided to give the armband to Gallas and not return it to Gilberto when he came back.

Anyway, those are events in the past. Let’s hope the future holds better things for us.

  59. frank, so he took a shot in anger against chelsea last week?

  60. I agree Frank. To my mind the anti Arsenal thing is just a variation on the old ‘soft southerners’ routine.

Toss in a bit of envy, a shed load of lazy journalism and a shovel full of zenophobia and you are away.

We are the Arsenal. We are on our own.

  61. Eddie McGinty

I understand, I see it can be twisted any which way the press wants, but that’s why the intelligent players don’t say things which could make them compromised. I like Ade and I wouldn’t want him to leave, but he leaves it open for the press and then, how can I say this, the more easily persuaded fans to jump on his back. He needs to keep his trap shut this summer, unless it’s positive with regards to Arsenal as he doesn’t seem to be at one with the fans at the moment to say the least.

  62. I think that anybody who wants us to sell Adebayor has a serious problem.

All I hear is a bunch of nonsensical reasons. What the fuck do they mean his attitude sucks?

    Does he dive?
    Does he shag grannies?
    Does he assault police officers?
    Does he threaten match officials?
    Does he shirk training?

WTF are these people talking about!!??

HOW MANY STRIKERS IN FOOTBALL SCORE ONE GOAL EVERY 2 GAMES?

  63. I think it will be difficult for Frank to verify RVP’s state of mind during the Chelsea game Vertino.

  64. QOS, unless you watch football with the sound turned off, you know what I meant by the phrase “shot in anger”. Fans know when a player has taken a shot which is very much unexpected, or taken out of frustration. Let Frank comment for himself.

  65. ChrisGoona,
the discussion was about RVP’s reaction to a pass that didn’t go right. I think I made that clear now for a while…. It wasn’t about RVP being played in a different position.

  66. It will be interesting to see AW’s next signings. Is he worried about Diaby? No, I doubt it, that will not be a consideration although he might be a little disappointed in Diaby’s return from his huge potential. Ade? No ways, 46 goals in 2 seasons is a good problem. Strikers? Naaah, he’s said so already. Anyway the PL goals tally says it all.

Sylvestre, obviously. We need another CB of note, that might be Senderos, but maybe he thinks of a more versatile player. His reflection on defensive lapses is more about 100% organisation from every player, the team. For ACN we will missing Song, Kolo, Eboue.

I have a hunch AW is thinking along different lines from many. A forceful impact to ‘unlock’ the parked bus method of playing Arsenal. My wild guess is he will be thinking – those early losses, where we went behind from a wonder-strike or set piece and could not get back; later on the 0-0 period, 2 or 3 of which should have been won, all in all a good 10 points lost there. WHY? Failure to break down defences. WHY? Tactics or players?

Now with Eboue and Song both missing for the ACN spell, plus injury toll fears, the midfield starts to need some attention anyway.

  67. I have to disagree slightly Ole.

The anti-Ade feelings are quite understandable.

They are media fueled. They create the perception that a pronouncement of unswerving loyalty is swiftly followed by flirtatious glances in the direction of Milan.

They may not be fair, people probably shouldn’t believe what they read in the papers but often they do.

From there, people want him sold because they don’t think he’s committed to Arsenal.

Comments such as “i do it for the money” are very easy to twist into “I’m available to the highest bidder”.

He’d be better off learning the phrase “no comment”.

  68. That quote of Ade, seems like of last year. He said almost the exact thing last year.

About buying defensive players. Why is everyone discounting that Song has always been considered as a Centre Back by Arsene. Maybe last season’s injury situation forced him to give Song a run in that position. Maybe Song would be pushed back to where he was originally suppose to play. A determining factor would be the ANC(?). Essentially what I am trying to say is that maybe Arsene doesn’t go for a CB, he goes for a defnsive midfielder. Don’t start now, I am just drawing out a possibility, and this assumption by many where Song is left out of the CB options.

  69. Blazon

Since they lost roughly half their EPL package to Sky, they have been struggling. According to reports, they have already restructured payments to the FA and Football League with talks ongoing with the EPL.

A report at the weekend also mentioned that they are in talks with Sky so that Setanta (and presumably Arsenal TV) are bundled into the former’s sports package.

    YW

  70. No need to slam your hands down on your keyboard Vertino…

  71. PDT Aka FW!,

Thanks for coming over from LG. You need’nt bother changing your language when you come on here.

Yesterday when a blogger on LG asked PDT what he would suggest happen at the club this summer, PDT had this gem to say –

    “Fire Wenger = 5 million
    ” Hire Rijkard = 1 million
    Save – 4 million!

    Very deep PDT. Very deep.

  72. S-G

It’s not entirely due to the international nature of the team, it’s more to do with the fact that we are a big four club who is perceived to be in a rut and unable to get out of it.

    YW

  73. Its a stupid phrase, used by moronic commentators.

  74. ChrisG … “If Wenger changes the system in which football was sucessfull up till now,… they will all have to”.

And it will be the second time AW will have done it, unacknowledged really AW played a decisive part in waking up England teams to realities of continental football, a faster game, passing, control. The big teams learnt and caught up though, part of the story of the last 4 years.

  75. On RVP’s contract extension it could be held back pending further bad news, just like Theo’s was announced after the Man Utd and Chelsea thrashings. Perhaps RVP’s will be announced on Monday, to cheer us up. However if the news is good it will probably be season ticket renewals!

  76. Fire Wenger!

I am feeling positive today, Alex! :-D

  77. Fire Wenger!

Also, my language is invariably polite….

  78. Zimpaul: Appreciate what you say about Ade..
but why does he have to speak to Milan every week [ and tell everyone about it] ??

Am just not sure what his motives really are; he wants to be in Lome “where everybody loves me” – yet he pisses off Arsenal fans by yakking.
Also, i still think pushing Bendy in the face was nasty. If he scored more goals… ok!
If he scored less goals – go!
An puzzle within an enigma.. or whatever it is..

  79. ..sorry just returned…I did not say he took a shot in anger, Vertino….I said you were guilty as charged….

  80. You’ve come back all eggy, Pb.

  81. LG? What is this LG of which you speak?

  82. care to elaborate that then frank?

  83. Dear Auntie Vertino,

I hit my hand with a hammer this morning and then banged my hand into the piece of wood that I was working on (despite knowing it is stupid). My wife now believes that I will leave her in two years.

    What can I do?

    Yours in hope,

    Consolsbob

  84. …not really, Vertino…’guilty as charged’ is quite clear statement….

  85. …add an a…

  86. It’s very simple – all AW has to do is read everyone’s favourite blog today and act on it – and world domination is imminent.

Apparently this is the answer –

Sell Senderos to Villa for £4M and we get Barry.

Move Toure to CM and sign Zapata and Lucio / Sakho.

Although how Toure gets into the team with Barry and Fabregas is not clear.

Swap Eboue and Traore for Johnson – who apparently will be happy to be back up to Sagna.

    Simples! :-)

  87. It’s certainly simple. Matt.

  88. On a seperate note – the more i hear from Gazidis, the more i like him.

He seems to talk total sense, maybe he should do Ade’s PR.

  89. Eggy Consols ?

It’s your frightful lack of Greek which troubles me.. married as you are… zenophobia ?

    Give me a kiss!

  90. Consolsbob, the analogy doesnt quite work I’m afraid. I moved on from my first comment on the post and elaborated further. No-one since then has given a decent defence of RVP’s action. I thought this was a place where things could be discussed properly, but instead it seems the aim for some on here is to ridicule the other at every expense.

  91. erm, that was a bit obscure…and ‘frightful’ btw.

  92. Why does Wenger ban Adebayor from talking to the press?

  93. …there is no need to defend his action, Vertino…

  94. Calm down Vertino. Just a few jokes.

I can think of many reasons why a man might show frustartion after a week like RVP had. I saw him throw the ball down in frustration after scoring the penalty but just assumed that he hated to be beaten.

Yes Pb, sorry, no excuses there. I actually can speak Greek!

  95. Vertino…
    Are you being serious ???

Ridicule is far more fun…and anyway… whacking the turf is cool… Do it quite alot, up the allotment.

  96. …oh I thought that you meant people who are revolted by Zeno of Sidon…sort of anti-Epicurean…that seemed to be the context….

  97. The reason we’re making fun of you is that the notion that a proffessional footballer might get frustrated when things aren’t going well, hardly bears any consideration.

Hell, i get pissed off if the dishwasher doesn’t get the porridge spoons clean enough.

  98. ..is it porridge or porage..?

  99. My husband makes it. Often a mixture of both.

  100. Vertino

If you have it in for RvP thats your problem, no has addressed your query because there is nothing to address like Frank said

i am a very very stressful person if im in a team and im losing, if i was playing for Arsenal and we were losing and i dont know how high my emotions would be running.

RvP loves the club, if he expresses his emotions of frustrations sometimes what is the problem. I like his attitude.

    Born Winner

  101. …I do too…with golden syrup in it….it is possible to sign your name on the porridge/porage by letting it run from the spoon onto the surface of the porridge/porage….

  102. Ti na kanoume.

  103. OLe Gooner Adebayor: Does he dive? Yes on sunday he tried to con the ref

Does he give 100% every game? No

Does he want to join AC milan? Yes

Did he take Arsenal for a ride last summer: yes

Fact: a quarter of his 24 league goals were against the worst team in premiership history

  104. Gazidis on Wenger –

““He is not closed-minded,” the 44-year-old told a meeting of the Arsenal Supporters Trust this week.

“The idea that Arsène Wenger is some stubborn guy who is not open to having his ideas challenged and there is nobody there who can say ‘listen we need someone with experience in the middle of the park or at the back’ just isn’t true.

“He is asking questions of himself all the time and talking to people all the time. He does not believe he has all the answers and I see that as one of his strengths.

“’He is not someone who takes the easy route to protect himself. He will place the protection of his players above that.

“He is not going to go out and say ‘this guy is not good enough’ or ‘this is where we are weak’. He has the ability to make difficult decisions when they have to be made, but until then, he protects and supports the players he has.”

  105. porridge Frank!

  106. ..so you don’t like Ade, Aneta…we know…you told us before….

  107. Aneta and all the other Ade haters…

try not listening to the radio or reading the newspapers… it does u no good

  108. ..so why is it called Scotts Porage Oats then Chris?

  109. i aint got a clue Frank… never had them

  110. if your talking about the same porridge then that is how i thought it was spelt… either way back to footy!

  111. Aneta –
you may well be right.. (infact you are) – but you’re still a depressing person to be around. Dammit, need to take more Prozac now.

Consols: Knew you could speak Greek.. and i accept your apology. But no repeats!

  112. …it is good that Ivan Gazidis has made that statement about AW….it has been said on here many times over….because it is obvious….

…just watch the doomers twist Gazidis words…..over the coming hours and days…should be fun….

  113. fair enough chrisgoona, all of us who have played sport at some level have shown the frustration that RVP displayed against chelsea. what I’m saying is that in that situation it can undermine the team, that’s all.

I’ve already said I rate RVP and I still think he’s more gifted than Henry himself. He has a long way to go before we can hail him as a legend, however.

  114. ..this f*cking porridge porage thing is an outrage…somebody needs to sort it out….

  115. oh and QOS, a dishwasher? how lazy are you?!

  116. Back to footy…

Porage is just a bastardisation of the French “Potage”… as in soup.

  117. If only Wenger wasn’t so stubborn on the issue Frank…and no point expecting Ivan Gazidis to sort it out either…he’sonly been here five minutes and already he’s claiming Wenger makes the best porridge/porage in the world.

  118. Aneto;

Oh I see. It’s all your freaking interpretation. He wears an afro so that means he’s not commited to the cause, and similar crap.

I judge by hard cold fact. He scores one goal every two games for us, and continues to do so even this season

Well this season he’s scored 16 in 32 starts. None of them against Derby County.

And Torres scored 5 goals against Derby last season plus another 4 in the Carling Cup. 9 of the 30 goals he’s scored. FACT. Doesn’t mean he’s crap.

It’s idiotic to discout goals scored against crap opposition. All strikers in the league last season played Derby as well.

  119. That’s a relief Pb. I’m grateful for the second chance …..wait a minute, how did you know that I speak Greek?

  120. …here is the first of the arsehole headlines…..
Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis Admits Arsene Wenger Is Questioning Himself……Goals.com didn’t waste any time….

    …HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….what a bunch of tossers…

  121. 4th the target

I’m sorry. Arsenal is in deep trouble and has been since 3/4 years ago.

There is something wrong with the team and a lot of fans on this blog don’t see it.

The simple fact is, we’ve lacked quality for sometime. Toure is now poor and not good enough to deserve a new contract.

Diaby, Song, Almunia, Denilson, Eboue are all average players who have been promoted as quality skilled players. These players should be squad players and not be playing regularly for us.

Can anyone explain to me why Almunia at over 30 years is not in the Spanish national team?

Any GK beating by a 41 yards shot is not fit to wear the Arsenal jersey. Same as a GK beaten by Hull’s Gioviani and Spurs’ Bentley long cheap shots.

Why are Anderson and Lucas preferred to Denilson by Brazil? Simply not good enough.

If we don’t bring in quality and rely on Toure, Sylvestre, Gallas, Djourou for our defence then we should be ready to struggle for 4th against Everton, Villa and even Fulham next season.

Every team is strengthening and moving whilst Arsene Wenger wastes the club’s money on average players who’ll never be played by our competitors.

You can say what you like about Denilson, Diaby and Song but the fact remains that they don’t qualify to wear the Artsenal jersey playing regular; they should bench players.

We’ve been wasting money on wages for average players for years and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

AW spinning on these average players has now gone to the limit.

  122. I’m like the Adebayor of the kitchen Vertino.

  123. Vertino…
Ever had kids ?? No laziness there!

Also…RvP is a great player, but – more gifted then TH 14 ?? No. Maybe one day.. maybe.

  124. ….I don’t think that the French are bastards at all…well no worse than the English, Pb…..definite zenaforbia there I reckon….

  125. QoS –
    cool !!

  126. Well predicted Frank. The hacks have to earn their bread I guess.

Aneta, I wonder why you never respond to my posts. What is your take on Wenger, the board and Usmanov?

  127. …Thierry used to say that RvP was the most gifted player he had seen, Pb….

  128. You’re right 4th. Especially galling is the way that Wenger has all of those hacks at The Guardian Chalkboards, Telegraph stats and Opta et al fake all those stats that indicate Denilson is a very good, efficient dm.

  129. shotta-gunna

YW and Frank – Thanks for your insight into the attitude of the football-establishment and the media towards AW and Arsenal.

One thing I must add – AFC is a very lucky club to have landed such a wise manager. The Board should be creditted for their faith in his stewardship. I fear however with the rising commercialisation of the sport and the financial demands on owners that AFC’s future as an English-owned club is on borrowed time. May my fear be unfounded but I doubt it is.

  130. Top comments from Gazidis – if you try to intepret them in a negative fashion, then you are either a cock, or stupid or a stupid cock.

  131. LOL – shall we argue about Denilson again?

I thought that had been done already!

  132. 4th the target

    QOS

Statistics? Forget statistics. We watch their performances on the pitch all the time and they’re not good to play for the Arsenal.

Arsenal is falling backwards with all these average players.

  133. ..we know you think that, 4th…you are repeating yourself….which is a bit rude…

  134. 4TT,

Denilson, Diaby, Eboue and Song are all internationals who’ll play for ANY of our competitors.

Man poo wanted Denilson. We got him first.

Shellsey wanted Diaby, we got him first.

  135. Frank -
Genuinely, thanks for that. i love RvP…but he just seems too eager.. i guess it needs a year or two more.. get that AA mode of playing, where he is thinking just that one step ahead.

    ~ Am half-French btw…. :-)

  136. …I think that there is a real possibility that AA and RvP will combine brilliantly over the next season…very, very exciting prospect…..actually with a full pre-season I think we will see many other fantastic combinations too….

    ….top half or bottom half?…

  137. shotta-gunna

Farting 4th @ 2:58 – “Arsenal is in deep trouble and has been since 3/4 years ago.”
LOL – I wonder what this makes Newcastle today or big-spending Spurs 3 months ago or Leeds, Charlton and Norwich of yesteryear.
    Different day, same crap.
    - You are justing farting around as usual.

  138. 4th the target

Dream about how great these players are. Spin like AW about them. They will only lead us downwards next season if we keep them playing regularly.

Almunia for instance is too average to be No.1. and has to be challenged by a better GK.

Jens has been proved right saying he can’t win anything whatsoever for us.

  139. I am sure AW has noticed where our short comings have been this season, and i for one am prepared to let him make up his own mind about that over the summer, be it with or without new signings.

  140. And even if i wasn’t prepared to, what difference would it make! LOL

  141. …you have said all that, 4th..stop repeating yourself….or are you campaigning…if you are that is really rude…coming onto someone else’s blogsite to evangelise against club, manager, players……very, very disrespectful….

  142. 4th the target

    shotta-gunna

Are we now competing with Newcastle and Spurs.

No wonder they are emboldened to fight for 4th next season.

I realise you’re proud of us playing 4th. I’m not.

    2006 4th
    2007 4th
    2008 3rd
    2009 4th
2010 5th or 4th if AW don’t learn lessons now

Is that all we can do?

Lack of ambition? God save the Arsenal.

  143. The subject of expirience in the side is an interesting one.

If you take into account injuries and being cup tied, we lost an awful lot of expirience from our team over the season –

Tomas Rosicky, 27, Captain of the Czech Rep
William Gallas, 31, Full french International
Andrey Arshavin, 27, Captain of Russia
    Eduardo, 24, Full Croatian International

If we played all of those in the same team, you could argue we have proven, expirenced players across the team.

  144. yep…4th.. you belong somewhere else. Tied by your testicles in an LG dungeon, watching Sheringham DVD’s, perhaps ? [ if anybody made any]
Man, it’s so boring….if you want trophies, you know where to go…
If you love the Arsenal.. shut the fuck up!

  145. Eggy !!

  146. 4th,

How do you know we will be 4th or 5th next season?

You probably predicted we would be 4th last year, and we finished 3rd, and could of won the title….

It must be fun being a fan and thinking that we are going to finish 4th or 5th…

Try being optimistic, and thinking we can win it, and get behind the team – its more fun.

  147. re 4th’s comment that “Diaby, Song, Almunia, Denilson, Eboue are all average players who have been promoted as quality skilled players. These players should be squad players and not be playing regularly for us”.

But that’s exactly what they ARE; in the main, they are squad players. And f**king excellent ones at that! Played mainly because of injuries….zzzzzz. The fact that they have been promoted as “quality skilled players” is both factual and good for their confidence.

  148. Good morning/afternoon all!

Its good to see that Arsenal are sticking to their guns as far as the team policy. I admire anyone that wants to do things out of the norm, knowing they will have to take maximum criticism. These policies will bear much fruit and already have as a matter of fact. For me the 21 match unbeaten speaks volumes to where this team is headed (no other team has done it), greatness seems to be inevitable.

Well, some doubt, cry and moan while others stand firm, believe and support. Anyone can be right, but I would much rather stand with those who have faith than the former miserable folks!

We have something extra special and if some of us stop only thinking of what we havent achieved for four years, it would be easier for them to see the obvious possibilities!

Some additions will come and they wil fit into the scheme of things perfectly.

    NO FEAR!!!

    Be Blessed!!!

  149. Statistics lets forget statistics?

Ok lets rely on opinion. I watch their performances too and I think Denilson is excellent.

So now we have a difference of opinion…however can we settle this, I wonder?

Shall we look at what’s occured during the season…i don’t know, he’s a defensive midfield player so lets look at his propensity to win the ball and use it accurately?

Well what do you know? I’m right, you’re wrong.

  150. Fuck off 4th. You are so 5th rate.

  151. Consols…
You are so annoying! Saying it in such a witty, pithy way… and eating fresh eggs.. it’s all too much!

  152. 4TT

So by your logic, Seaman should have been dumped straight after we lost to Zaragoza…

    YW

  153. 4th the target

Button up and compete with Spurs, Everton, Villa for 4th and join the also run midtable lots.

The standard of ‘a cultured left foot’ is too low.

    Underachievers. Lack of ambition.

    Arsene Knows

    Bye bye.

  154. I’ve been polishing my doomer technique Pb. I used to be too verbose.

  155. Now look what you’ve all done!

Who are we going to pick on now?

  156. …so did this fellow Scott just spell it wrong then?…..he actually spelt porridge as porage…. wrong on all of the packets of porridge he ever sold….

…..one of the biggest bluffs in marketing history…

….’how do you like the new logo and strap line…got it printed up on 45,000 advertising posters and we already have 500,000 boxes printed up and ready to go’……….’what’…..’what do you mean thats not how you spell porridge’….’oh…er..well f*ck (think think think)’…’oh er yes well thats how they spell it locally in the Highlands of Scotland I think you will find’….’this spelling…you know…porage…is the authentic way’…..

…’now about those haggises…yes of course it is true….on my life…haggises are mountain creatures….two short legs on one side….two long legs on the other…helps them walk around montains….not a word of a lie….oh and you get clockwise haggises and anti clockwiase haggises….and they never mate with each other…for obvious reasons….’

  157. Bye Bye? I just thought that was just his wish for the first two rounds of the Champions League.

  158. 4TT,

You fool. Nobody is happy with 4th. Some moan, some don’t.

Some think hysteria can help claim trophies some don’t. Some misread the state of things. Some don’t.

Some see the demonstrable value in our players. Some just want to rubbish some players against all reason.

  159. Porridge with milk and molasses is a great delicacy. I advise we try this. In fact when is the ACLFood blog actually starting. I’m hungry.

Pboy. Don’t worry yourself about Ade. His crime – an innocent in an age of cynicism. He says what he thinks, all too literally, other don’t, but think it.

I pondered about the name Fire Wenger! does it mean, kind of “More Fire Wenger!!” or “Pack Your Bags Wenger”. I suspect the latter, pity. Maybe when we win next year he can keep it, but change the meaning.

4th the Target is one of the worst names I’ve heard, I feel he should aim higher, it’s worse than ‘Franchise’, but better in the general scheme of things than a sad sod from Limerick. Only just.

  160. didnt want to comment on the porridge thing but I love Corn meal porridge!

    Shotta!

  161. 4th the target,
    who knows better than AW,
    from the deepest my heart,

    BYE BYE .

  162. Are a lot of peope in London suffering from generalised sadness?

Like Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh.

    I just wondered.

It’s the abyss of ‘wit’ amongst the D&G that is really sad. I always thought cockneys had a reputation for fast thinking, witty banter and a sunny ‘come what may’ disposition.

  163. ZimPaul, Jamaicans put nut meg, vanilla and condensed milk in it, along with some other stuff.
    SWEET!

  164. They used to be like that in ’76 and ’77 when I was a labourer on building sites in London.

  165. …yes we cockneys are quite happy thank you, ZP….most of us are not doomers and gloomers….London in the Spring is beautiful…

  166. Planx (Perth Gunner)

To be real the real down point in our team is the style in which we play. We no longer have players quick enough to cause damage to defences in a flash, which Manure seem to have stolen from us.

The invincibles played great passing football but always started games at such pace and produced counter attacking football at its best, on most occasions killing a team in the first 20 mins of the game and coasting for the rest of the game.

This was made possible by the ability of PV4 retrieve the ball, be strong in retaining it whilst under heavy pressure, and quick distribution to WILLING RUNNERS.

There was always a runner if its not TH14, then Bobby or Freddy. This allowed for passes to be always positive, looking for spaces in behind the defensive line. Significantly it was the ability of those runners to make that space available by making those intelligent runs.

Now comparing to our current side, its pretty evident firstly that for the most part our attacking players have failed to deliver in that aspect. You only have to count the number of times you find Ade or RvP hanging about the midfield when we disposase the opposition in our own half and their reluctance to get up the field, preferring to recieve the ball to feet. Only an idiot will not work out that their defence will run and set up their defensive line. This then causes the oh so unbearable lateral passing, slowly making their way up the pitch and finding it hard to penetrate a congested area. You would think that this is the time when shooting from outside the box is advantagous and yet they fail to do so.

Our team needs a leader, Cesc will have to step up good. Its no longer good enough to just be talented. We neec a leader who is hungry and most importantly INSPIRATIONAL. Someone who can make the team believe that even in their worst game can pull together to get the job done.

Its sad to say it but as much as I love our players, there is such a soft approach in the midfield that encourages other teams to sense blood when playing against us, and that is the fundermental difference with the invincibles.

Ade should stop trying to play like TH14, looking to play from the wings and all that. TH14 was a supremly talented individual, who had dribbling abilities known to very few players. He was able to take the ball and make things happen. Ade does not have those abilities. He need to use his speed, height and power to good effect by positioning himself in positions that occupy the central defenders thus allowing the other runners to have space to run into and have a potent target to aim for.

They need to sort it out.

  167. Paul N … yum, like the sound of that. Maybe too sweet with the condensed milk though.

When I was little we put real butter on it, as a big treat!

  168. I’m just hoping Gazidis is a proper chief executive and reads Arsenal blogs.

Because is he is then he should know the following. We need to offload some players and sign some players.

    Simple.

First on the conveyor belt is Adebayor, followed by Senderos, Kolo and Eboue.

Now, I haven’t got the top class education that Gazidis has, but by my reckoning, that’s 4 deals that he needs to make for outgoing players.

    Adebayor –> Milan £25 million

    Senderos –> Villa £6 million

Kolo –> Manchester City £6 million

    Eboue –> Portsmouth £3 million

That gives us a net income of £40 million.

From there we just need to acquire 2 players. 2 more deals.

A forward for Adebayor and a defender.

£25 million for Villa and £15 million for Alves or Micah Richard.

    Simple.

If Gazidis wants to realise his expensive oxbridge education then he needs to excel at deals like this. 6 deals. Not difficult.

David Dein used to sell fruit and veg for f*cks sake. How difficult can it be for an oxbridge graduate to do 6 deals.

My uncle was a fishmonger and he made plenty of deals before 10am !!

Pull your finger out Gazidis, we are all watching.

How difficult can it be ?

  169. …syrup or treacle is what you should put on porage…as in half a pound of treacle….

  170. ZimPaul, You gotta know how to balance the condensed milk with the regular milk.

The best, especially in the morning. As is said, this kind of stuff “sticks to the ribs”

  171. …aah heres an opportunity……you from Perth, Australia or the real Perth in Scotland, Perth Gunner?…if you are from the latter….you might be able to help us on the porridge/porage front…perhaps you know the correct Scottish spelling…if you are from the former you can just fuck off……..

  172. Stop glancing yourself at someone else’s missus (United) and stay true to yours. Just wait till you see the total football style Wenger brings and marriages with dynamism. Arshavin, RVP, Cesc, Rosicky, Wilshere, Nasri, similar back four etc.

  173. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Frank, language……you sound like you need a hug

  174. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Perth, Australia. In fact I live in Perth but born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

  175. My mother always put nugmeg on junket. If she was feeling really extravagant, she would then add clotted cream.

  176. Never had that Mr. Bob, but it sounds good!

    Do you make it?

  177. planx… you sound like you need someone …. like a listener

  178. Brown Sugar was always a good one to stick on your Porridge….

  179. I have to say though that I saw Marcos Senna at Villareal and if we can get him I think he’ll improve our team.

You’ll not that I am usually loathe to name players I like or think the club should sign. But I think he’ll fit in with our style, won’t cost too much, isn’t on a fat salary, is experienced and would take the chance.

  180. Senna is an excellent player and he would fit in with the Arsenal style for sure.

  181. Alex Ice Cream

    Planx,

Good post. I believe we break too slowly as well, especially compared to previous AW teams.

  182. Planx,

I see you’ve been introduced to Frank – who is to culture as what a fly is to ointment. Never mind him..!!

Your spot on – we lack so much pace in moving the ball and end up relying on Cesc to find Ade with a pin point cross far too often. Arshavin will make a huge difference in this regard – and its only a matter of time before he’s played in the centre.

Muppet – good post. Not so sure about Micah or Alves though? Have you seen Zapata play?

  183. I think we need to get our players healthy. With the invincibles we didnt have these constant injuries that didnt lend itself to the team being cohesive.

We also saw some good speed against Liverpool. All the components for a frightening counter attack are there and we have seen it at times.

Health is and has been our biggest problems! damn it!

  184. Regarding the invincibles, what I am saying is that these players just knew eacother inside out due to playing with eachother so much. They did not have to think but knew what would take place and what a specific player would do.

I must admit that sometimes I see some back passes that make me go crazy!

  185. Great post Muppet. Zapatta would be ideal for us. Or Metzelder from Real Madrid would just be awesome. We need some German steel. Yhe best cars comes from Germany.

What hurts me most is when sometimes we just don’t break at all. That really pinches me. Leaves me with sadness for days. AW teams used to break so well, but now, sometimes they just don’t it. Why don’t they break? Anyone know any inside information on that? Is it some form of new tactics? Are the players instructed by Arsene not to break quickly or not at all sometimes?

  186. …got one……that was what I was trying to prove earlier….Joe always turns up with AIC….wonder why?…

  187. Paul N :

I can understand why some one like Eduardo gets injured in being hacked down like he was; or Gallas/Cesc pulling knee ligaments.
But I can’t understand how RVP, Diaby or Rosicky seem forever consigned to the injury table.

  188. and AIC pops up when another doomer pops up

  189. Remember at the beginning of the season we were being caught by the counter a lot and I think this caused Wenger to pull the reigns a little to make sure we were more sound defensively.

  190. …..very good, Muppet, Ateeb…couldn’t get a ten bob note between you and the real thing….scarely close…

    …..Arsenal….

  191. I dont know Joe, I just hope next season will be different because from what I can see, we are the most talented team if we stay healthy.

  192. “But I can’t understand how RVP, Diaby or Rosicky seem forever consigned to the injury table”

joe, I know you’re dump, but you can’t be that dump for writing shit like this?

  193. … scarily, scarily, scarily…..not that I know what scarily feels like you understand…being hard and all that….

  194. There’s no doubt that he’s tried to protect the back four by playing Diaby on the left and Nasri & Song at DCM especially during the big matches. The formations in themselves were an implied admittance of defensive shortcomings. He’ll certainly get a CB and a DCM IMO – and depending on Rosicky’s availability and cashflow from sales – I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a left sided midfielder and goalkeeper to boot.

  195. .

  196. I do hope Rosicky comes back, it would be a shame to have the career of a such a talent be shortened by injury.

I look forward to seeing him next year! exceptional player!

cant see a goalkeeper coming in though.

  197. Paul N – Agreed. The talent is immense. We just don’t have an aerially powerful CB. Sendy will be sold as he wasn’t exactly sent away to get experience – so I can see Arsene getting a top notch experienced centre half. I can also see him getting a DCM with power, pace and aerial ability. Someone like Yaya would fit the bill perfectly – did you see him shore up the defense against Chelski when abidal was sent off. I thought he was monstrous – and he handled Drogba well – a player who has caused us so much trouble.

  198. ….I don’t know the issue with Abou Diaby…however I would venture to guess that his break was very, very bad which means that it takes a long long time for muscle, tendons, ligaments and nerve ending….especially proprio ceptors to build up and work in in perfect balance…

…for RvP…most of his injuries stem from him getting really stuck in….if you watch his game and you probably don’t judging by your comments…he very rarely pulls out of a challenge even if it means that Edwin Van der Saars fist is at the end of it….his technique means that he is very likely to get groin strains….players who twist and turn a lot are prone to groin strain…of course he broke his metatarsal after scoring the equalizer against the Mancs…there are good signs that his injuries are lessening as his muscles and bones strengthen and become heavier with age…

…Tomas has also had a very rare injury…instead of pulling a hamstring…which would normally be OK in a matter of weeks…his hamstring was damaged by a kick to the back of the knee…the symptoms are similar to a hamstring pull…which masked the seriousness of the injury…in fact the tendon of one of his hamstring muscles had been torn from the bone….this is a very difficult injury to treat especially in a top sportsman…

  199. Goalkeeper won’t be a priority but despite the fact that he’s had a relatively good season – I don’t think Almunia is international class. Shay Given would have been a great buy.

Rosicky is a super talent. He provides real penetration down the flanks. Hope he makes it.

  200. …it is intriguing that you mention Yaya Toure, Joe…he has a history of injuries too…mainly back…which could be a compression injury but probably muscular…and thigh which I am guessing is a muscle tear nut could be groin strains…similar to RvP and several other ‘lively’ players….good players get injured…

  201. …Almunia will be fine….and his distribution is superb much better than Shay Given’s…….

  202. Agreed, despite making some stunning saves, I too, don’t think he’s world class. He is prone to error. Cassilas made a couple of mistakes against athletico(?). And judging from Madrid’s strict regime, they might offload him in the summers. He can’t be world class if he lets in goals on his near post, from 20 yards out. We should bid for Cassilas.

  203. Yaya Toure was tremendous against Barca, he would ba a great addition.

I do think that Djourou can deal with the aerial threat defensively, but again, injuries! Maybe Senderos will come back. I think he would be a great addition to the squad and he could most probably give the team a great emotional lift.

  204. I dont know, I Think Almunia has been one of the best goalies I have seen this season.

Who are the world class keepers in the PL?

  205. ….it was rumoured that MCFC offered Casillas £11m a season to play for them and he said he wanted to stay at RM….a lot of money….

  206. ….good player …but the time for Yaya Toure to come if he was coming was summer 2007 was it not….and will he not be off to ACN in the middle of next season….

  207. ….I reckon AW will go for strengthening central defence and right back cover…

  208. Doesn’t Yaya Toure play for Barcelona?

  209. Paul N

Well there are very very few World Class keepers in the premiership – I don’t rate Van der Sar, nor do I rate Reina very highly although he is very good at penalty’s. Cech is class even if he’s not quite the fortress he once was b4 he banged his head.
I think Given is world class, I think Schwarzer, Jasskelainen or Friedel are all better keepers that Almunia.

  210. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Our worst problem is the evidence of vulnerability. Its as if everytime a team attacks our goal, it almost results in a goal. I believe its the lack of a dominant CB, with the ability to read a game well and posesses a calming effect to the rest of the back 4.

Its as if the only defence that team knows is last ditch defending. It does not matter whether we are playing West Brom and they only have 2 attacking attempts, it is likely that those attemps almost end up in goals.

Kolo for all his hard work gives that impression of panic stricken individual evertime he goes to mark someone. I don’t know if its just his way of doing it but it seems that it then transends to the rest of the backline and makes the defence begin to panic as a whole. Gallas is no different.

I initially thought it because of was individual faults when especially Gael so often let the opposing player have time to put in a cross, making a half attempt at putting in a block. But then I started to notice that Gibbs does exactly the same thing, so does Eboue when playing RB. Even Gallas has this tendency to let the ball run across him when he recieves a backpass, then turning into a nervous pile when deciding what to do with it after closing down his options by turnig to the keeper with a forward breathing down his neck.

It begs the question, is it the faults of the players or the coaching staff?

Our team needs to take responsibilty. That young team bullshit needs to come to an end. They also need to stop trying to prove to themselves that they are good enough by telling the press statements like,”We showed everybody today that we can win big games”. It always sounds like an attempt to make yourself think that, whilst in your mind you are not that sure.

They need to learn to play for the team but take responsibilty individually to make good decisions during the game. The number of individual mistakes in this team is phenominal. Once that nervousness is dealt with, I believe that we have a very capable bunch of individuals that can get the job done.

  211. …he certainly does, Pz…

  212. Planx (Perth Gunner)

    1. Ade needs to learn to stay onside, play his position (CF) and work on being comfortable controlling the ball. Sometimes when he is played as a lone striker, you wonder why, coz he loses virtually every ball played to him or kills a potential break by bad ball control. What we liked him for is what needs to be more evident in his game – HUNGER

    2. Our midfield needs to be more mobile in attack and defence. AND THEY NEED TO INSTILL FEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK.

    3. The wingers/runners need to be much quicker runners and make intelligent runs. There is no use standing behind a defender then complain that the balls you are recieving are not accurate enough.

  213. …I think that Kolo and WG were performing very well together before WGs injury…and the backline were not leaking goals up to that point….the problem we have had in the run in is that in important games we have been unabe to play our dirst team defence….even Bacary Sagna was injured and then ill during that period and is only just finding his feet again now….and of course Manuel Almunia was missing for some key too…

  214. Planx

Even in the invicible season Kolo was prone to errors but his pace used to get him out of trouble.Sadly since the ANC his pace has gone. Also he had Campbell alongside him.I have been saying all along that the Gallas/Toure partnership just doesnt work.We need a CH who is willing to stick his head where it hurts like Adams.Keown and Vidic

  215. I think a player would be sent off for sticking his head where it hurts.

  216. …the Gallas Toure partnership was working in the games up to WG’s injury….and there is much eveidence that Kolo is back to form…we do need central defender cover though…the key to defence though is discipline and I think that the pre-season will give a much needed chance to regroup defensively at the back and all over the pitch….this is a our first full pre-season with a full squad in a long, long time….in fact if AW is to bring in players I hope he does it early so that they get the full two months of training in….

  217. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Very true Mike and don’t get me wrong, i think Kolo does a good job but he does give the impression that its always last ditch defending with him and i believe that plays into the hands of the opposition fans and into the minds of the back 4.

  218. Please, Toure still has his pace and has been playing great of late.

As Frank said, we where playing great defensively until the injuries to Gallas, Clichy and for a shorter period Sagna, even Djourou got injured. As I have said a 21 match unbeaten streak, says a lot more than many of us are given credit for. We could not have done that wothout playing good defence.

  219. Planx (Perth Gunner)

We just need a confident, stable backline. That will also allow the midfielders to feel safer to express themselves.

  220. …I don’t think our defenders shirk from heading the ball when they can….I think there is a problem with organisation and discipline so they end up in the wrong place at the wrong time…

  221. Planx – thats exactly the point a select few have been making on this blog. The lack of defensive discipline is threefold IMO – I do think the players need to take responsibility, I also think there’s a lack of leadership at the back and I think Arsene doesn’t do confrontation and accentuates the positive – which peters down to the defense.
A typical example of this was how Diarra was handled. Diarra refused to play against spurs and wanted out. We sold him on and made good money from both the sale to pompey and the % recouped form the madrid sale. But do you think Diarra would have done that to Fergie? Consider how Ronaldo was handled in the summer when he declared he wanted to leave. He was very swiftfully put in his box. He’ll be sold on UTD’s terms only.
Arsene is the thinking mans player. A visionary who accentuates the positive and this is evident in the wonderful style of play. To be good in defense – you need to be a mean spirited destructive bastard with high discipline. Arsene inherited 4 of the finest full backs ever to play the game. He craftily phased in players who learned their trade and it worked for sometime but not of late. Sol left and Kolo should have stood up. But he’s not a leader nor is his form good since the ACN. And Kolo isn’t aerially dominant – but nether is Gallas. The combo has never clicked really as they’re both too alike – a ground pacey players who played off aerially dominant CB (terry/Sol). Eboue is a very versatile player – but Sagna is a much better right back. Gael has seamlessly replaced Cole. High balls and defensive indiscipline have cost us time and time again. I just hope we get it right this time.

  222. Planx (Perth Gunner)

The dayour defence passes the test will be when they finally learn how to deal with the same candidates that expose them all the time – DROGBA, TORRES.

Its always tha same thing when they play those two and to be real, until they learn to deal with players who are strong, pacey and accurate we will always be exposed.

  223. …all midfield players should defend when necessary and here we have a had a problem in terms of organisation and discipline…players in the wrong places….I feel sure that the preseaon will help to sort this out….

…the point is that we attack as a team and defend as a team…but it requires real understanding and split second timing to get that right…I think we will …after getting the squad together for the first time this summer…and then the secret will be to be able to field a consistent first 18 players….

  224. Planx (Perth Gunner)

    Well said Joe, well said.

  225. shotta-gunna

Paul N at 4:19 pm – Just letting you know I had our favorite Jacan cereal this morning. No more condensed milk for me though. Strictly 2% low-fat. My health can’t sustain these sugary high fat traditions. LOL.

  226. …Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn were of their time…none of them would have dealt with Drogba and Torres….Martin Keown was our best defender of that time…I believe that he would have been able to handle them …Steve Bould was good in the air…but he would have been left behind in a cloud of dust in the modern game….Kolo and WG are better than most of the back five of yesteryear….

  227. Planx (Perth Gunner)

I am an admirer of Le Boss, but i got to say i think his political way dealing with issues so blatantly problematic for the team has been dissatisying in the last few seasons.

Our youth policy is great, and the graduates are talented, but do not possess that mentality of not falling apart when the chips are down, and that worries the hell out of me.

  228. Drogba was kept rather quiet on Sunday. Don’t remember him once getting a clear sight of goal. Torres has been kept quiet by us a couple of times if I wasn’t dreaming.

  229. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Frank, its time we hold our hands up and admit, we need a CB like Vidic. So dominant, they make the other defenders adopt the same mentality. We need that more than anything.

We need dominant players mentally, not just talented players mentally.

  230. So what have you both decided Planx and Joe? I as the ambassador of ACLF, need to mail our suggestions to Arsene in a couple of days. What will it be then? Can you both work on a rough draft, underlining clearly what Arsene should do in the summers? Apart from the players suggestions that we need to buy, your(Joe) analysis of the “threefold defensive discipline”problem seems really interesting. Could you elaborate at length. And write a longer version of your posts, I am sure you kept it short on purpose, to make it more to the point and interesting for the general readers.

    Regards.

  231. Planx,

Agreed. I am holding my hands up for that one. Mentally experienced players is all we need.

  232. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Sorry Gents need to get some shut eye, blimey its 0152hrs here.

  233. …no not really Plank..I think that our current first team defence is good enough…but I believe that we need to work on our defensive strategy as a team…the pre-season is the time to get it right….the time to wok on organisation and defnesive discipline…I think our players have all the attributes….I don’t belive in monsters…certainly not monster defenders…I believe in athletic defenders with great ball skills, tacking ability and positional good sense…working together as a unit….it is the last bit we are short on..

  234. Great post, Muppet.

I just hope Gazidis has his nectar card with him.

  235. …oh ffs…

  236. Planx (Perth Gunner)

Last season we had a great mentality running through the team. Whether we like to admit it or not Flamini’s zest and Hleb’s all round play had a lot to do with Cesc’s performance. We did not only look to him for a way out, we had plenty of options.

Our offence was our best defence in the sense that when we lost the ball, you could count the number of touches the oppsoition would have before we rushed them into giving the ball back.

It would be done from Ade, Hleb, Cesc, Rosicky, filtering down, hence we always had more of the ball. Our only problem was lack of finishing.

I would rather have that than the style we adopt now of allowing the oppsition into our half before attempting to disposess them. If it weren’t for the combination of factors that ruined outr season, we would be much the better for it this season.

If u compare the mobilty of our midfield this year in comparison to last season, u see a difference.
Last season, all teams were afraid of us because of the efficience of that midfield, casing point, the sort of perfomance we put together against Milan – Outstanding. Multiple points of attck, rush defence, energentic movement araound the park, perfect.

Now we got players to scared to take the responsibilty of making things happen, thus that lateral passing, and passing of the buck when a clearf shot needs to be taken.

If the Man U game taught us anyhthing about our current crop of players, it was lack of invention. They looked clueless when u had a very efficient midfield in front of them. Last season, you knew Hleb would unlock that midfield, if he didn’t Cesc would find the killer pass, we had options. This season, it would hard to imagine that sort of burden being dealt with by Denilson or Song. Thank God we got AA.

  237. Planx (Perth Gunner)

sorry for the spellings, really need to sleep now.

  238. Wait Planx, which one of your posts do you think should be the crux of your argument? I really need to complete this document that I need to send it to AFC.

  239. Shotta, Ha Ha!!!

Yes, the older we get we have to be more careful with the diet!

  240. Junket… that’s a weird food for city-folks…

Can’t eat it anymore, as it has rennet in..but the memories are coming back…

    CB – Cretans vs. Thetans…

It’s bed time for us insomniacs..

  241. Planx,

You’re overreading the result of that Man poo game. We lost, and they were crucial games. And we had woeful performances. But those games don’t tell you all the volumes you’ve read into them.

If we could surmise so much from one game, then we should pick the Liverpool, Fulham, Villa and Porto games and conclude Man poo are crap, defend poorly, are indisciplined, etc etc etc. No

They’ll win the league and might win the Champions League. So maybe a bad run doesnt say that much then!

  242. As it happens, I am off to Crete for a few weeks next week Pb.

Ateeb. Stop it! It’s just not fair, like shooting fish in a barrel.

No, one of the few things that I never got a taste for Paul, City boy or not.

  243. It is getting slightly boring here Bob. Same old stories, groans and moans. No wit, nothing original, as its based on the media and pundits. Or the crap thrown around on other blogs. How many new ways can we come up with to put them down. We need new challenges. This is not fun anymore, that 4th dude, keeps repeating. A bit HOWARDISH. But not fun.

Where’s Passenal and Maria by the way?

  244. Maria was here earlier, I think.

  245. Passenal’s a sensible woman. I imagine she’s having a few days off. As you said, the comments have been rather boring for the last few days. Perhaps the game at the weekend will generate some excitement.

  246. It is getting a little boring dealing with these idiots. Still, at least Pb is back to amuse us with his life story.

What about Fun and TC? All our ladies seem to have gone AWOL.

  247. The game at the weekend would be interesting. I am expecting a win, we’ll be playing without much pressure. Would be interesting to see how much affect can Arshavin make. Although whatever the result on the weekend, it’s not going to change anyones minds. They want change, and in a big way. Idiots. The whole lot of them. And they all f**** sound the same and say the same things. Army of conditioned zombies. Funny how one of them fell for Muppets posts, simply shows the prespective out there. lol.

  248. TC has been here a couple of times recently, but nowhere near enough for my liking. Same with FunGunner.

  249. What other types of foods can we talk about? that was interesting. I wouldnt mind some jerk chicken and hard dough bread right about now.

  250. I’ve just made pasties. Out of the oven in about 20 minutes.

    Where are our ladies?

  251. Kool, you make them from scratch? impressive!

  252. The ladies are tired of the fuss it seems

  253. Paulie Walnuts

It`s easy to say we need a Vidic type defender. Manu U got lucky with him. He was relatively cheap & might have ended up like a Stepanovs.

They can afford to take more punts than we can. Arsene has to be more certain a signing is going to work.

  254. 1-0 Wigan !!!!!!

  255. Yes, Paul. I learnt from my mother and she from hers and so on.

I think you are right about the ladies. It has been tiresome on here sometimes.

Vidic just got outjumped for the Wigan goal and then whined to the referee.. Not good enough for The Arsenal

  256. PW,

FOR FFS MAN!!!! Didn’t you read today’s posts. Atleast 3 mentioned that we need a player like Vidic. Do you have anthing new to say or add to that?

  257. I think we need a defender who eats raw red meat. Ateeb will this qualify to be added to the strategy document you are preparing?

  258. I think we should keep all our players.

But sell off some of our “very clever fans”

    First of all Joe Planx

And buy a young Maldini for the money.

  259. You think Joe and Planx will generate enough money to buy 50 years old Maldini?

    They will draw blanx

  260. Talking about everyone’s favourite defender Vidic, he seems to lose his footing very easily. Torres made him look like an arse in the 4-1 spanking and now Hugo Rodallega of Wigan outmuscled him with some ease tonight before scoring. Wonder what the clever fans who know it all would have said if Kolo or Silvestre made the same mistake.

Btw, Van Der Sar was beaten at his near post for the goal tonight. Why dont Man U fans call for his head?

  261. lol. Young Maldini, where do you get those?

    Alex,

Raw meat is an oudated idea. What we need right now is a hunter who can defend. By hunter I mean a real hunter. One who gets up 4-5 in the morning, goes out to hunt for food. Sure they’d be living in London and all, that’s why we need to recreate a small jungle, and let loose a few animals. Dears, Rabbits, bears, leopards. That is where they’re training will lie. To feed themselves, by hunting. Only then will the boys turn to men. And stick out there head where it hurts. Deal with the Drogbas and Torress. Get stuck in and all that. If its costly to create such conditions then the pre season is the ideal time for our defenders to learn. Scr** training on the pitch. Leave our defense in the middle of the Amazon, for 2 months, let them survive on their own. Throw in a football, while you’re at it.They’d pick up a few things, and would do anything to stay on the pitch when they return.

  262. Cause our players should make NO mistakes, we should never get beaten AT ALL by anyone…not even by the 4Legged Devils from Mars

  263. Talking of everyone’s favourite tactical and strategic coach Guus Hiddink, why did he substitute Drogba with Belletti in the Champs league semi against Barca? Why do that when Chelsea was playing against ten men? Is’nt that overly negative? Did’nt the lack of pressure on their defenders from Drogba invite them to come forward and eventually score?

We can now criticise Hiddink with the benefit of hindsight. Its easy to do. Why dont our clever fans pick on other manager’s as well?

  264. 4ever…

I’m sure AW will find a younger version of Maldini the Great.

And I’m again sure we will get loads of money for J and P, the way they they rate themselves….

  265. I have to say I like Wigan. And I like Lee Cattermole.

Vidic is Man poo’s strength and weakness. If they play high enough up the field and the centre halves push up, Vidic is rather weak running back towards goal. If you can attack the space behind their defence they’ll struggle. When they played us they sat back a lot and we never could snap into attack quick enough.

But then they’re playing with Johnny Evans who’s not very good. Those who ridicule Djourou and our kids. I have to ask you really Johnny Evans or Djourou? Take your pick.

  266. Kaal’

I agree on the first one. As for the second one, I think they overrate themselves, therefore when you go to the market to sell them, you will face the reality :)

  267. Sound of silence.

  268. …or is it one hand clapping?

  269. Pz can decide….

  270. twotouchmiracle

    ah. woulda been nice

  271. Damn…Tevez has equalised. Very good goal. 1-1 against Wigan. Got to say he is a very good player.

  272. They’ll miss him next season Alex – how many times has he pulled their fat out of the fire?

  273. Hello Passenal, good to see you back.

  274. I’ve been around Ateeb, but didn’t really have much to say so I’ve been keeping a low profile!

  275. Yeah Passenal he has saved Manc skin many many times over the last two years. At West Ham too, he seemed most switched on when fighting against relegation. He is a skilled tough as nails streetfighter.

Now that Fergie has opted for 32 million Berbatov he has no choice but to sump Tevez unless he sells Ronaldo which does not look like happening – at least this year.

  276. It is better that way these day Passenal.

That goal really hurts. lol. Wigan almost made it through. Manu might be celebrating the title this weekend against us. That won’t be a pretty sight.

  277. cant let that happen Ateeb!

  278. Carrick scores. Fugging hell.

  279. what a shame, I was hoping against hope for a little upset! But I suppose that is why they are in the position they are in – they usually find a goal when they need one.

  280. Let’s go to OT to collect a prized scalp. They can do it if on song.

  281. Happy Gooner

    YW,

    ‘exacerbates’ – Great word

  282. Happy Gooner

Ole Gunner, forget Cattermole, he proves statistics are not to be trusted

  283. Happy Gooner, who is your first choice centre back? Let me guess…Chiellini? Your first choice defensive midfielder…Lorik Cana? First choice striker..Benzema or Villa? Anything new you’d like to add?

  284. I was surprised last night, watching the mancs, to learn how few goals their strikers have scored this season.

Something like, don’t quote me. I haven’t looked them up.

    Tevez -5

    Berbatov -9

    Rooney -12

    Ronaldo -18

All have made 30 odd appearences.

Just struck me that with stats like those some Arsenal fans would want Ade, Bendtner and RVP sold.

    What’s that? They do?

    You couldn’t make it up.

  285. Happy Gooner

    Alex,

Firat Choice Centre Back – Rio

    First Choice DM – Gattuso

    First Choice Striker – Torres

    Whats your point?

  286. Highly achievable targets those Happy Gooner. I can see all three being unsettled and ready to move. My point is that you are an imperious virtual football manager.

  287. Happy Gooner

Alex, How have you come to that conclusion? I just think Cattermole is not all that. You asked who I thought were the best players in the world in those positions, obviously we’d never sign them.

Never played football manager, I prefer PRO EVO, They done a survey which proved I am the best Pro Evo player in my house.

  288. You have a sense of humour happy gooner. Your sense of humour is a bit like that of a blogger called Bloghead aka Arse 21 who used to come on here.

  289. Hey, Alex, what are you suggesting?! Next you’ll be telling me that “4th the Target” is Howard, or all the bloggers with hilarious cock-themed nicknames were, in reality, just a couple of sad bastards from LG.

    This will not stand.

  290. Lol OOU. Was just about to do that before you preempted me.

  291. Yogi has quashed the Howard/4th theory, my friends.

The sad bastards form LG are all too real though.

What shall we do with them Ateeb?

  292. Yes, Ateeb, you are right. A defender who eats raw red meat and kills things. Is the AW dossier ready. Look, we could drop them in some remote area (Amazon, whatever) for a couple of months, leave them, and the survivors are then trained. Maybe a few more weeks in a nasty inner city environment, gang training (LA, Johannesburg, Rio?). Then the final survivors are trained. Kick-boxing. In a cage. The survivors are then trained. With SAS paras, forced marches, unarmed combat, mental toughness. The survivors are then trained. We only need two CBs, right. In the old days ‘Harry the Poodle’ (aka ‘the dog’) from Milwall FC used to do that kind of training. Is he still around. Get AW on the line. I think we’ve solved Arsenal’s defensive woes. We just need about 16 to start with, thick as bricks, 6’4″.

  293. CB, can I suggest they join the special trained unit Ateeb has in mind as defensive CB cover (he’s talking toAW on a daily basis, right?).

  294. Some of me mates are ex SAS. They should be able to scare the lights out of even Drogba. Will ask them to apply for the post of central defender.

  295. Yep, good idea Alex. See now we’re getting practical. none of this theory X nonsense.

  296. ZimPaul,
I appreciate that you are trying to be humorous, but I don’t approve of your anti-American attitude. Although there are one or two gangs in LA, the vast majority of the people in that great city are law abiding citizens who have never been involved in gang culture. I don’t think you ought to tar everyone with the same brush.

  297. You are on to something here ZP. The sad doomers could be dressed as chelsea players, they’d like that, for their final ‘test’. The first two who tear their bollocks off get the jobs.

As for the rest, well, there’s just not much call for thick as shit thugs is there?

  298. Are you sure that dish is cold enough yet, Pz?
