Every Little Counts – Manchester United (A) Preview

As Arsene celebrates the 4,595th day of his reign at the club, it is marked by one of the biggest games in the history of The Arsenal Football Club, a statement of the magnitude of tonight’s encounter when you consider all that has gone before since the days of Dial Square.

A Champions League semi-final would be pretty high on his list of ways in which to celebrate such an occasion were he to choose to do so. The only celebrating that I suspect he would like to do tonight would be those associated with a resounding victory. Whether he gets that pleasure will be revealed in just about twelve hours time. Hopefully he will.

The injury ‘worries’ that arose from Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough have pretty much resolved themselves favourably with Cesc and Johan Djourou apparently recovering from their various knacks. It leaves Wenger with options in midfield and a relatively strong back four. No confirmation as of yet as to whether Mikael Silvestre will get the opportunity to perform once more at Old Trafford but on the face of it, to me at least, Djourou should be picked ahead of him.

When he filled in earlier in the season, Djourou was a bright spot in an otherwise dimmed light in the central back four positions. That is not to say he was perfect, mistakes were punished, notably by Robbie Keane in December. The other aspect that Wenger has to take into consideration is that Silvestre will be highly motivated this evening if selected. Even so, that should not be a barrier to the Swiss international partnering Kolo Toure.

The midfield is another area of choices for Wenger. With Gibbs likely to remain as left back – I see no advantage in putting Silvestre there, what is gained through experience is lost through pace – there is a strong case for leaving Nasri in the central position where he has been extremely effective. This leaves the left hand side open for selection. Personally, I would put Diaby there. He has played in the position before and may neuter the impact of Ronaldo through ‘double-teaming’ with Gibbs. Given Alex Song is likely to return to the line-up it would mean Denilson dropping out. It is harsh on the Brazilian but in that position, I feel Song is more suited to the battle.

Given Cesc seems to be marked out as adopting a more forward position supporting Adebayor, Arsene has to choose whether Walcott is in the side or whether a more defensive option is taken. If Nasri plays centrally, Walcott has to provide natural width on the right to compensate for a narrower left hand side. Should Wenger go to with Nasri on the left, Denilson would be my choice for the second central berth and it would be no surprise to see Eboue come in on the right to provide a bit more ‘steel’, Walcott becoming an impact sub for the evening.

My line-up for the trip would not be dissimilar in formation to the one that played at Anfield:

Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Djourou, Gibbs; Walcott, Denilson, Fabregas, Song, Nasri; Adebayor

Cesc observed the importance of the night:

To be in the Champions League final twice in four years could be one of the best things in the history of the club and we’re determined to make it happen

It is a night where the defence will need to hold firm. I expect the match to be less intense than the Premier League and domestic cup clashes might be, the realisation that there is a second bite at the cherry at The Emirates tempering the natural attacking instincts of both sides. United proved vulnerable to Porto in the last round at home when the Portuguese movement caused them problems. Arsenal likewise were slow out of the blocks and trailed from early on. Neither side will want a repeat of that.

For Adebayor, he can stop slapping around with Beyonce and focus on scoring. Vidic and Ferdinand are probably the best centre half pairing in the Premier League but not impregnable. If decent service can be provided to the Togolese striker, he has the ability to finish; he needs his shooting boots on from kick-off though as chances may not be as plentiful as he might expect in a domestic clash.

You might gather from that I am not expecting the classic that the media hype suggests. And frankly, neither am I bothered by whether it is as dire as last night. All that matters is qualification for the final, a hammering is no different from a tie settled by a goal deflected in off the referee’s arse.

It will be a match where the players will have to work their socks off to get a result. They have proven before that they can do so, tonight they must prove it again. Bon Chance, Mes Amis. ¡Buenas Suertes!

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

1. Come on you Rip Roaring Reds (yellows). :)

2. Alex Ice Cream

Yogi,

I don’t think that it is AW’s 9,000th day as Arsenal manager. I thought that it was his 9000th day as a manager. Having been Arsenal manager for nearly 13 years it is not long enough to be manager for 9,000 days.

3. Great post Yogi.

With djourou we have a slight case of lack of match practise due to his injury. Moreover we’ve seen Toure-Silvestre playing together for a while to get the hang of it. A difficut choice to make, but we can be glad that we’re not making it. Gibbs has shown that he is more than capable of playing against the big boys. However teams have tried to disturb him by doubling up on the boy, hence adequate cover from the midfield on the left hand side would be necessary. Maybe that’s why Denilson’s inclusion in the centre might be a viable option in order to help out Gibbs, with Nasri being deployed on the left. Nasri did wonders there when playing against united at the Emirates. So why take that away? And United are short on the right back options. Which is quite sad to me, because I would have loved to see Garry Neville play there.

Where do you see Eduardo fit in for the rest of the season? He hasn’t had any match practise to speak of.

4. Yogi,

AIC might be onto something. 9000/365 makes roughly around 24 years.

5. Good post Yogi – calming..

Ateeb – am not too worried about Eddy ; if he’s fit, he doesn’t seem to take him more than a few minutes to get straight into the game.

.

6. 9000? think its about half that mate. maths not a strong point?

7. Glad we’re all focused on the important stuff.

8. AIC / anon

Just goes to show you should never believe anything the Guardian prints…

Amended!

YW

9. On current form, I expect:

Almunia
Sagna-Toure-Djourou-Gibbs
Song-Nasri
Walcott-Fab4-Diaby
Adebayor

Bendtner, Denilson, Eboue ON

Fabianski, Vela, EDS, Silvestre UNUSED

Key is harassing Carrick, Scholes & Giggs
Helping out on Ronaldo, Berbatov & Rooney.

See a 2-1. Could go either way

RASERS!

10. Alex Ice Cream

Yogi,

Hahaha!

I think that it is 9000th day as a manager.

11. Didn’t like your blog much this morning “anon….”

I think you may be right about Diaby Yogi…his physical size may be useful against a United side that often comes to kick us.

Do you think they’ll stick Anderson on Fabregas?

12. Advice to Fabregas:
Don’t look at Anderson’s face, all you’ll turn to stone.

13. Alex Ice Cream

I hope we go and play with the handbrake firmly down.

I am doubly annoyed that RvP is unavailable especially since Arshvin is cup-tied. RvP is one of those players who can do nothing all game and then win it with a moment of genius.

His persistent injuries are a huge worry both for the player as they have hindered his development and for the team as you cannot rely on him being fit even if he only plays once a week.

Ade will be key. If he gets a chance he’ll have to bury it. His physical presence will also be needed against Vidic and Rio.

Cesc could be used to pressure Carrick from his new advanced position as ManU tend to get him to pass the ball out from the back. Carrick is a bit slow so he can be pressured into a mistake I feel.

14. Alex Ice Cream

Qos,

I agree about Anon. I thought it sounded rude. There are other ways of making the same point.

15. I’ll go with your line-up, Yogi. It is better than sticking Diaby on the left. As far as I can remember, Diaby is not a big-match player.

I would rather put Vela on the left as he works his socks off in matches and he can lend much-needed defensive help to Gibbs should he fail to penetrate up-front.

16. As everyone knows, I hate to offend, and I don’t intend to now; but is there not a comical aspect to giving team predictions? They’re all so similar.

17. Your line up is a loser. The midfield will lack quickness. Song, FAB4 and Denilson all slow. What makes Barca thick is the quick movement of the midfield.

I don’t rate Denilson at all and should be dropped in this game. This is not a game against midtable premiership team. His lack of pace and poor range of passing won’t help in this game.

My suggested midfield is:

Song/Fabregas
Nasri
Theo Diaby

or

Song/Nasri
FAB4

Theo Diaby

Both combo will make the midfield mobile and a creative one. Playing Nasri at LM has become a waste of resource.

Song/Denilson is a defensive one, non-creative and immobile midfield and with Cesc playing upfield, Ade won’t get the passes to score.

This game is bigger than Denilson. Our defeat in the FA game with Chavski should be a lesson to Arsene.

Either Cesc or Nasri should play deep.

18. But seeing Diaby at the pre-match conference kinda diminished my hopes.

19. Diaby is a plenty good big game player.

All of our team is.

20. What’s the name of Howard’s illness, Ponyboy?

21. Pz

They are similar because the same players are out injured!

YW

22. “What makes Barca thick is the quick movement of the midfield.”

What?

23. I wasn’t talking about you, Yogi. Of course not.

24. I assume that Howard also has quick movement in the midfield.

25. Almunia

Sagna Toure Djourou/Silvestre Gibbs/Silvestre

Walcott Song Fabregas Nasri

Diaby

Adebayor

26. Poliziano

its actually foot and mouth disease… you get to put your feet in your mouth most of the time… and your brains get suffocated…

COME ON YOU YELLOWWWWWWWSSSSSSS

27. Is it true that Song will miss the next UCL game if he gets a yellow card tonite?
Maybe that will force AW’s hand tonite…..

28. Almunia

Eboue, Toure, Djourou, Sagna

Walcott, Fabregas, Song, Nasri

Diaby

Adebayor

I’ve got a feeling Diaby will step up in a major way tonight. COME ON ARSENAL!!!

29. Pz

His movement was so fast he’s buggered off!

YW

30. Those who will miss the next leg if booked tonight:

Man U: Evra, Rooney

Arsenal: Diaby, Nasri, Song

http://www.uefa.com/multimediafiles/download/disciplinarychart/uefa/uefamedia/82/23/94/822394_download.pdf

Shouldn’t influence Arsene’s team selection other than to have Walcott run at Evra all night and get someone to batter Rooney to provoke a reaction.

Better news on Lansbury.

32. Better news on Lansbury: no broken bones found after scan at hospital, confirmed from club website

posted this before but it got moderated for some reason

33. YW

thanks for the info on the cards.. Rooney and Evra are quite hard tackling dirty cu***!

34. We’ve got to go for it tonight, it’s far more important that we get a goal tonight than we keep a clean sheet. I said yesterday I’ve got a feeling this could be a huge result and I think if we really fly at them we could grab a few.

Also, notice in the pre match press conferences the way the two managers have been talking. Fergie has been very respectful of us, and talking up Walcott and his hopes that Evra can manage him. Contrast that to Arsene saying this is the time our team shows what it can do, and refusing to discuss their danger men, focussing on our own strengths instead. It seemed as though, psychologically, we’re in a stronger position and we’re looking to go tearing at them. I really hope we do. Anyway, my team would be this:

Almunia
Sagna, Toure, Djourou, Gibbs
Cesc, Song
Theo, Diaby, Nasri
Ade

Diaby’s at his best in a central advanced position. Also, looking at the midfield united are likely to put out there is no holding player so a deeper lying Cesc may find himself with plenty of room to dictate the game from his favourite position. And I wouldn’t surprised to see Sami get another against them tonight.

35. My guess on the team is:

- – - – - – - – Almunia – - – - – - – -
Sagna – Toure – Silvestre – Gibbs
– - – - – - Cesc – Song – - – - – - -
Walcott – - – - Diaby – - – - – Nasri
- – - – - – - – - Ade – - – - – — – -

Vela coming on later on the left while Nasri can go into the middle behind Ade. I firmly believe Cesc will go back to his normal CM spot next to Song. Wenger was playing a mind game with Fergie who was at the Emirates checking our team selection out.

I dont buy what someone said about Nasri being wasted out wide. He has put in some good performances out there and score goals from the position. Diaby is better and more suited to being through the center than on the left. His drives forward with the ball have been startling when hes on form and injury free!!

We also have a plan B in Eduardo and Bendtner.. if things dont go too well and lets say we are trailing 1-0 with 20 mins to go. We could stick 2 strikers up there. Bendtner-Eduardo combo with Edu snapping up anything that falls to the head of Eduardo.

Also Vela looked quite handy down the left, he has the speed and sharpness of an out and out winger, and has an excellent left foot that can wrip some balls into danger areas.

We should be a bit more unpredictable tonight and go out all guns blazing!

36. Hugo

SNAP! i think that is our best team right now too.

Cesc and Song were great together and looked very comfortable in the few games they played

37. I gave that twat Berchiche’s Wikipedia page a nice edit.

38. i’d go with OG’s line up with walcott, diaby n nasri switching positions constantly causing man poo problems with cesc dictating play from deep.. put song on gibbs’ side tho.. bac can fend for himself..

whatever the hell it doesnt matter.. arsene has gotten the better of man poo b4 n he’l do it again today..

COYG….

39. Great minds Chris, great minds…! We’ve disagreed on who should partner Kolo though, but I think both Silvestre and Djourou have their pros and cons.

I think if we stick Diaby up there it will cause them problems. I remember a couple of years ago ferdinand said Ade was the hardest striker to play against in the league and I think Diaby could provide similar difficulties- they’re both big, strong and gangly and can both produce flashes of inspiration that can lead to goals. Add in Theo and Sami buzzing around the outside and Cesc supplying the defence spiltting passes and it could be a very successful tactic against united. I hope!

40. Frank's biggest fan

It is upto this team to end United’s dominance and put us back to where we belong, we have always denied this c**ty team from bullying. It is not beyond this team to stop United in CL. Fergie at Europe has always been a joke. 2 finals in 23 years? both times lucky, especially the 2 quick goals & JT slip. Nevermind the luck they had in other years to even reach the semis. Will United’s luck run out? I for one certainly hope and pray for it.

41. Frank's biggest fan

It is not beyond Diaby, Walcott or say Nasri to dribble and influence the game in a single moment. They can do it. Yes they can! COYG!

42. Larry Mbaco, Chrisgooner,

Like the look of both of your teams. Interesting Larry that you’ve opted for Eboue at left full instead of Gibbs. Think Eboue steel and experience here might be a better choice?

43. FBF

Not forgetting that Bayern hit the bar before United scored their first in ’99…

44. Come on you GUNNERS! Massive game today. I don’t care who starts, we have a side capable of beating manure. This is going to be an intense, focused game. This is why anyone plays the game, for crunch matches in front of the world. Let’s support the team, those of you lucky enough to go sing your a$$es off. No fear! RASERS!!!

Exactly Yogi.

Btw any superstitions that you wish to adhere by, tonight?

46. chrisgooner, i read you on the man utd forum, at the end you said your heart said Arsenal and your head said man utd, say it aint so, chrisgooner, say you were being threatnd , say it was reverse phsychology, say you were payed

47. cant wait to play them off the park. Having watched the other two last night my resolve is getting stronger, im begining to feel invincible

48. The minds here are too genteel to be encumbered with my superstitions…

I guess if people are looking are omens, they are mixed.

United have never been knocked out of Europe by an English club whilst Arsenal have never beaten one.

Arsenal have never lost a European semi-final previously and this is their seventh which some consider to be a lucky number.

Adebayor has scored in his last two appearances at Old Trafford.

My heart controls my head continually anyway when it comes to Arsenal… will always believe we can win no matter how big a match it is.

We are the Arsenal.. they should be afraid of us

56. I read arse blog this morn and had to laugh at his pre match disorders, i do many of the same. same sound level on the telly, my Arsenal cup, scarf, necklace, lighter, wallet, pictures of my tour of the emirates, cuup of coffee and a smoke as the ref blows. i know it dont matter but it all adds to the experience

57. chrisgooner. they are afraid, thats why i think the interview with your namesake was out there. they will try any thing mate 2-0 to The Arsenal

58. boomer

Read it as well.. cracks me up every time!

I always have to have my drink glass, phone and keys all positioned on the table in front of me according to if we are playing home or away. Just a silly little habbit, but i cant help but not do it!!!!

59. boomer

Can see us frustrating the hell out of United, we were pretty sound defensively before we got any injuries, now we got a bit of stablity in the back 4 even if they aint the starting XI we will be a bit more comfortable and accustomed to each other.

Song back sitting in front and a goal on our part will make United very edgy. They can be as confident as they like going forward, but Cesc-Nasri-Diaby-Walcott will counter them at any opportunity.

We will have the same gameplan as at Anfield.. hopefully concede less!

60. I’m I deluding myself for thinking maybe Eduardo could be a surprise starter?

61. Non Edible Nacho

no… but you are deluded in a sense that if Eduardo starts that means we are likely to go 4-4-2 which is delusion at its best mate

Ade is best for the lone frontman role

62. Yogi – I said “disgraceful” rather than “robust”, fully expecting an edit of that sort though!

63. ChrisGOONER – couldn’t Eduardo be the left winger in a 4-5-1? For all we know he has been learning this role in training for a couple of weeks with the express intent of unleashing it on United.

64. is there any news about bischoff ??anychance him getting a contract extension???

65. my startig line up
~~~~~Almunia~~~~~
sagna toure silva gibbs
theo song nasri eddy
~~~~~~fab~~~~~
~~~~~~ade~~~~~
66. crafty bison
for a champions league semi-final i think it will be a bit stupid to try experimenting new roles on players!! Wenger may surprise me later now i said that.. hahaha
seriously though we should just stick to what works best. Eduardo wont be rushed into a game of this magnitude i dont think
67. Seems unlikely NEN. In our away games and with our new 4-2-3-1 formation, Eduardo has a negligible chance starting as a lone striker.
Considering that he has had little match practice it seems improbable that he would feature on the left wing as well. The only way he may come on is if we are 1-0 down with 20 odd mins to go. lets hope it doesn’t come to that.
Lets hope Adebayor doesnt turn up in a casual mood today joking and chatting with the Man U team. We need the Adebayor who turned up against Villareal away.
Am a but apprehensive about today considering that two of our most direct offensive players in Van Persie and Arshavin are injured/ inelligible and our best defender (Gallas is missing) but am cautiously optimistic.
I hope that there is some end product to our play today and that one of Nasri or Fabregas go the Walcott way and play in a very direct fashion today. We need to hit them hard on the counter with pace. Confident that Song/ Denilson will do a good job in holding midfield.
Up the Arsenal! Victoria Concordia Crescit.
68. I hope Ole got it right with the starting line up – that looks the best team to me!
I am taking my lucky scarf chaps – Row 6 Upper tier – keep your eyes out! LOL
Leaving in about half hour – COYG!
69. Alex
I dont beleive we should play Denilson, he does a job but lately he hasnt looked at his best. Song & Cesc should sit in CM with Diaby Nasri and Walcott in front and Ade as a lone striker:
————Cesc—Song————–
Walcott——–Diaby———–Nasri
—————–Ade——————-
70. Frank's biggest fan
I’m almost certain of Diaby starting the game. Height advantage, incisive dribbling, unpredictability, and presence would be an asset.
Nasri is due a good performance. Theo is on fire. Cesc is on fire. Ade is getting the goals. Song looks solid. I’m not much worried about our midfield & attack.
But I’m still nervous.
71. I agree with you Chris – that team looks good to me.
72. I would agree Chris. Song is my first choice for today. He seems to have more gas in the tank left at this stage of the season and is physically robust enough to tackle and hassle Rooney and Anderson/ Scholes.
73. Nothing wrong with being nervous FBF – wouldn’t be human if you weren’t!
Let’s face it – they are a class team, but so are we!
At least we should see 2 teams try and play tonight, unlike last night! :-)
74. 5 hours to go…
five… long… hours… jesus this is torture
Hope you have a good one, Matt. I don’t want to see you, I want to HEAR YOU! Wish I was going up there with the rest of ya, i’d sing until my vocal chords turn to sandpaper. COME ON ARSENAL
75. Frank's biggest fan
I know by logic and reasoning, a good positive result for Arsenal is not unlikely. Just pre-match anxiety before big games.
76. oh god i cant wait any longer !
77. i am at work and i have been rubbish all day. can’t concentrate.
roll on 7.45.
78. Tonight is just massive. We need Ade to get at Ferdinand and Vidic, use his size and physical presence right from the off. ManU have shown more than once in recent games that if you put them under pressure they struggle.
One thing that might work in our favour is that our game at the weekend is pretty meaningless, we can afford to rest players if we need to. ManU can’t afford to lose against Middlesbrough, not an easy game as long as Middlesbrough put them under pressure and they do have a history of getting results against the big teams.
79. Whatever happens over the next two legs it’s been another exiting season to be a Gooner. I think the team have shown fantastic character to dig in when things were sliding and haul themselves back to this point.
Imagine supporting a mid table no hope team! At least we have excitement right to the final weeks of the season.
I think I’m so nervous about this fixture not because of the prize at stake but because the thought of losing to Man U hurts more than losing to anyone else. Or just about anyone else.
80. Alex Ice Cream
I feel sick with nerves. Its the first time I have felt like this since the 2006 CL final. I get nervous before big games but not like this.
I think we can hurt them though and hurt them tonight.
81. I think that both Song and Diaby will play tonight. They give us more protection from set pieces.
Giant Diaby (Wide left) is taller than Adebayor (Wide right..you could see his air).
84. I can’t concentrate either, today. Don’t know why, doctor. But I have no fear about tonight’s match. This is the kind of match where (and I don’t know how Wenger does it) we particularly show our class. We rise even higher in these games. We are the type of side that purrs in top gear. And in top gear is how we will play, tonight. As a unit. Everyone of them. Like a single, smoothly lubricated, lethal but beautiful organism.
85. Pity the streamers tonight! It could be hell finding this one on the internet.
May have to find a bar. And that’ll be a straight up choice between indifferent Mallorquins round my way or scary-looking (mostly skinheaded) British expats on the other side of town.
86. Oh and it has to be said – All ye D & G pundits and ‘fans’ of AFC, you have slated the team and manager all season, but here we are at the precipice of a Champs League final. The team has got here in spite of your support! Lets applaud them whatever the outcome of this semi final.
87. NO FEAR!
88. “Pity the streamers tonight! It could be hell finding this one on the internet.”
Why do you say that – because there’ll be so many people streaming, or because they’ll be clamping down on it for such a high-profile game?
89. somewhere deep down i know we will win. i can feel it. i have this ability to feel things. COME ON YOU REDDDDDDDDSSSSSS
90. This reminds me of how charged i was of Milan return Leg. But somehow the Arse always performs in high pressure.
COYG
91. I was just thinking about sheer numbers, CB; there are so many manure fans out there.
And the game is on pay to view in most countries. When that’s happened in the past it’s usually made for a frustrating evening.
You’re probably right about streams getting shut down as well.
92. I am about to crap my pants and my stomach hurts :-) The waiting is unbearable!!! Interesting comment from someone earlier about our success this season. We made it to the semi’s of the FA Cup, we are in the Semi’s of the CL and are pretty much assured 4th place in the EPL, (3rd is not beyond us) Earlier in the season we were being slated by other blogs as to how bad we were and that Wenger had lost the plot and should be fired! How wrong they are…if this is failure then how many teams wish they could switch places with us? I am proud to be a Gunner and as much as I want to win everything I appreciate the fact it is not possible every year and I can certainly appreciate what Wenger has done for this football club.
93. forgman – Just think where we could have been if we had had a little more luck wit injuries.
94. Marc, Yes, a very good point. I don’t think any other EPL team has been cursed like us when it comes to injuries. How I wish that Gallas was in the middle tonight with Toure! Djourou will have to step up and play the game of his life tonight.
95. Oh and it has to be said – All ye D & G pundits and ‘fans’ of AFC, you have slated the team and manager all season, but here we are at the precipice of a Champs League final. The team has got here in spite of your support! Lets applaud them whatever the outcome of this semi final.
97. Passenal
Round brackets works for italics, not the square ones.
HTH
YW
98. (Let’s test this out…)
99. Thanks YW – I’ll try to remember next time!
100. Still didn’t work!
101. (i) Testing (/i)
102. Huh???!!
******
Have feeling of quiet confidence which I cannot explain…
COY MIGHTY GUNNERS!
103. ITALICS
BOLD
just basically take the spaces out and it should work
ITALICS
BOLD
104. I think you actually need to use the pointy bracket things, not square or rounded ones.
Last time I tried to demonstrate this I looked like I’d lost the plot.
105. ok spaces obviously don’t prevent it from working
ITALICS
BOLD
take the underscores out
106. what the hell now the underscores aren’t showing up
use this picture: http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2167999/bold_Full.jpg
replace the b’s in the tags with i’s and you’ve got italics
107. this also might or might not work
this also might or might not work
this also might or might not work
108. Yep it is the brackets. I dunno, I’ve got a button on here that says “i“, one that says “b“. A lot easier for this technophobe.
YW
109. I’ve just refreshed and my first 2 attempts are now fixed, or did you do that Yogi?
110. Italics
(i)Italics(/i)
{i}Italics{/i}
Well that’s one way of distracting myself from thinking about you know what!
111. Stop showing off Blackstock and making me look even more technologically challenged!
112. Hey thanks Steww for your words, you speak the truth.
OK, YOU GUNNERS, COME ON LET’S DO THIS
All the way. I feel good.
and we support you no matter what!!
COME ON TO DA GUNNERS MAN.
ps I’ve found a bar with the game on, yippee. In deepest Africa. Emirates T-shirts aplenty.
113. Italics
114. Oh, those pointy things! Got it now. Thanks Blackstock.
115. Steww says …
Whatever happens over the next two legs it’s been another exiting season to be a Gooner. I think the team have shown fantastic character to dig in when things were sliding and haul themselves back to this point.
nice one brother (or sister)
OH … TO BE A RASER.
116. Passenal
Yep, I did correct them – one hates to see a lady in distress through no fault of her own.
For Italics, it is “pointy brackets” .
YW
117. my day is done and im off home, i know i wont eat, and i have an adrenalin rush going on just above my kidneys. Hope everyone has a great night wherever you are. let it begin. peace, love, harmony
118. Thanks YW – I know how to do it now, so I can stop polluting the blog with my experiments!
119. ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL!
120. “”.”"
121. Yogi good post as usual.Still 3 hours to the game,getting more and more nervous as kickoff draws nearer.Lets hope 4 a great display from the boys today .Come on u GOONERS
122. “Vidic and Ferdinand are probably the best centre half pairing in the Premier League but not impregnable.”
I agree, we should look to impregnate them at every oppurtunity. Forget protection, we need to be getting deep inside there and not firing blanks. Come on The Arsenal.
123. Good luck tonight everyone.
May The Arsenal smile.
Thanks Yogi and ACLFers.
ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL
124. An italic . Wow.
ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL!
ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL!
ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL!
125. Here’s a link to Arshavin’s agents denial of that scurrilous story from yesterday
http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/18764/Agent_Reports_are_all_lies_-_Arshavin_is_very_happy_at_Arsenal.aspx
126. Passenal – It’s amazing how football seems to attract so many low life scum bags. There’s a link below that story where the Munich chairman slag’s off Wengers transfer policies calling them “child trafficking and akin to kidnapping”.
Then why the fuck did you approach him to be your new manager a few days ago. What an almighty prick.
127. Fooking nervous – Song def to start – but we need Ade with his brain in gear and shooting boots firmly on.
Come on you mighty goooooooooooons!!!!!!!!!!
128. yep i agree… No fear!
4-0 to the Arsenal!
129. We need to win by two goals.
130. COME ON ARSENAL!!!!
131. Even a score draw would be a great result. The next leg will be crucial, but we have more to look forward to that one, because it will be at home. And also, we’d have RVP and Clichy back. A win today would be incredible though, offcourse.
Passenal,
That story on Arshavins agent, had crap written all over it. It was too blunt, for any agent to come out like that, and state those things. Sadly, there were many who bought that **** .
132. We love you Arsenal…We do
We love you Arsenal…We do
AaaRrrSenal…..We love You
133. Marc, I think he was upset that Wenger turned the job down. But that slur is deeply insulting. Cesc would not be where he is now if he had not come to Arsenal, so it’s hardly a one-sided deal. No one forces them to come here. These young men get a great football education and they are very well looked after by the club. Rummenigge has no idea what he is talking about.
134. please no silvestre to start please……………
135. Rummenigge is an idiot an most intelligent people can see past his bs comment.
136. That story on Arshavins agent, had crap written all over it. It was too blunt, for any agent to come out like that, and state those things. Sadly, there were many who bought that **** .
Ateeb, people believe what they want to believe. There are many fans out there who are ready to sell Cesc or RVP because Arshavin is here, rather than recognise that he is just another asset for the squad. Injuries and form can affect players over the course of the season, so why not hang on to that depth of attacking talent?
137. ……funny how we areback in favour now…….
138. Dedicated to The Arsenal!
for the old skool peop’s!
Tried this yesterday, hope it works.
139. no it didnt!!!
140. what is it P??
141. party of here!
142. Yep i see it P……loooooooooooool……you had me on my feet….great song…..
143. was gettin frustrated there Maria! ha ha ha!!
144. You cant hear these songs without shaking a leg!
145. …..yeah well my upper body had a go too….
146. Thanks for that little trip back to the old skool Paul N. I had a little boogie too!
147. I prefer something more epic – like the musical score by Williams in Lord of the Rings when the Knights of Rohan sweep down to relieve the siege of Gondor
148. Come on Arsenal
Chests out…walk tall and resolute to battle
And in the white hot cauldron, keep your wits and your discipline
And fight to the end
And don’t give them any easy goals
149. Silvestre plays…!!!
150. silvestre is playing……
151. so is Gibbs both passed fit…..
152. It does not matter who plays!!! As long as they are ready to give blood for Arsenal tonight. Come on you Gunners….
153. …………COME ON GOOOONERZ……………
Is everyone to nervous to post??????
154. Too true FG…….
155. oh no… silvestre the undercover agent plays!!!
We are Doomed!!!!
156. Yes Maria….this is it for me. My stomach is in knots, not even cold beer is helping (at the moment)
157. So do we think it’s Nasri or Diaby playing no.6?
158. …..Just like he did when we played them at home right???
159. Dudu is on the bench. He will score.
160. DukeGoonem, Piss off with those sort of remarks
161. Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Silvestre, Gibbs, Diaby, Fabregas, Song, Walcott, Nasri and Adebayor.
Manchester United: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson, Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney.
162. 18:51 CONFIRMED LINE-UP FOR MANCHESTER UNITED: (4-3-3): Van der Sar; O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson; Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney.
18:50 CONFIRMED LINE-UP FOR ARSENAL: (4-2-3-1): Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Silvestre, Gibbs; Diaby, Song; Walcott, Fabregas, Nasri; Adebayor.
163. beat me too it ;)
164. frogman,
i wasnt being serious mate!!!!!
165. United look strong. Ferguson’s shown that although he’s willing to be sentimental throughout the season, not so for the most important game of the season. An Anderson-Fletcher-Carrick midfield could overpower us if our players don’t take this game by the scruff of its neck. Song and Diaby are very powerful; if they perform, we win. Rooney plays wide left, so let’s hope Sagna is feeling better tonight.
I think the main concern is the channels, particularly that between Silvestre and Gibbs which Middlesborough continually got into with ease with SAF watching on. This is why he has gone for Rooney and Ronaldo as the wide men with licence to cut in. I sincerely hope Silvestre and Gibbs have had the time to work on their positioning despite their injury worries…
166. Actually, on second thoughts, I think Ronaldo might be central with Tevez on the right. Tevez has the ability to destroy that Silvestre-Gibbs channel.
167. Duke’s OK frogman. It’s just his style, no better Arsenal fan out there.
ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL!
168. This 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain and 100% reasons to remember the name!
Go Gunners!!!
169. crafty bison, how about a bit of positivity, this is an Arsenal blog and you are supposedly an Arsenal supporter.
170. Strange how things change..was hoping to see Eboue in there..
Maybe Manu and Dudu second half ?
Just dropped my bottle of wine…smashed all over the kitchen..but it was red; not yellow…
171. no beer for you…..what a classy guy you are PB…
172. Silvestre will do us proud tonight.
173. We want our team to win, so send them those positive vibes!
174. …..ATTACK…….ATTACK……..ATTACK…..ATTACK
175. haha..yeah, but I’d have shared it with you – honestly! :-)
Please find a stream, PZ..you have the Knowledge..
193. now, let’s get some away goals
lots of yummy yummy away goals
194. we need to simmer a little, we lookin nervous!!
195. Just 1 would do us…i say
COME ON ADEBAYOR…………
196. Young Gibbs doing well!
197. al keeping us in it at the mo.
198. tell me about it!
199. okay getting back in this now….come on Arsenal lets av it!!!!
200. BIg Al OUTSTANDING!!!
201. final ball letting us down but Man U are there for the taking. I think Eboue’s running at the defence would do this game good as Man U are relying on the counter.
202. Could have really been 3-0 Almunia was the difference between the two teams….
203. Almunia was brilliant. But Song outshone everyone on the field. Simply superb, giant in that midfield. Theo, has had a couple of good runs, bad choice for the final ball, but well we;re getting there. Good game, bad way to concede, but that’s Arsenal for you.
204. Which stream is working for you guys ? Can’t get anything. PLEASE!!
205. EE will do well in second half, I think.
No Fear!
206. I hate to hear a man beg, Pb. Sorry my friend.
207. frank's biggest fan
We love you ARsenal, we do
We love you Arsenal, we do
ARRRSENAL, we love you
Come on Arsenal~!
Come on you gunners!
208. PB….Veetle
209. Veetle’s okay for me. Try it again.
210. Ponyboy,
have you got tv ants installed.. espn china.
211. Anderson scares the living daylights out of me. Worryingly so does Silvestre and basically our entire defensive setup.
212. ok – thanks.
213. We need to gain more ball possession…letting them control the game until now.
214. It might be on more than one channel.
215. Do manu fans always boo opposing teams continually? It’s awful.
216. bring on Eboue!!!!!
217. A R S E N A L
218. Lets stop over passing and be more direct. The wings are there as Man U is piling the middle.
219. COME ON!!!
220. We’re gonna nik one on em!
221. come on Cesc.
222. Is Eduardo sick?
223. the irish will boo anyone.
224. Cesc has been off today!
We only need 1, COME ON!
225. way offside!
226. Eduardo is coming on.
227. this is def not Chelski
I’m proud
228. Could use Vela or Eboue for real, this match reminds me of the early season matches. Passing with no pace.
Come on!
229. wow!
didnt see this coming!
We will destry them at home!
230. can’t really complain with the score…
231. It’s gonna be tough without an away goal but I reckon we can do it.
232. Think we can’t really complain with the score…
233. yes..toothless..like the ghost of Hleb was there.
Too many backs to goal, and passes..the old cry of “SHOOT!” is back..
Glad Giggs was offside though – we may have had to suffer his chest-hair..
234. So many heroes to night.
Big AL first of all.
235. ……….the boys did us proud after going down so early on we continued playing our game….really hoped we could have got the away goal…..but all well 3-0 at home next week
NO FEAR……
236. No, that’s a fair result.
We do need to show more to win these big games.
237. oh yeah MS….GREAT GAME!!!
238. Could have been worse. We can do it in the second leg.
239. Well it was only 0-1 and I dont think we can play bad like this again.
I love the Arsenal but truth be told we were not good, well our final ball was garbage and we played too slow.
But Maria I am with you, NO FEAR!!!!
240. Mmm..not being negative…but 3 shots on goal ??
And why does AW sub so late ?
Sound like a D+G merchant..but it was frustrating we didn’t hit them harder on the breaks…Cesc kept stopping..(sorry Passenal – but Ade was made to look cr@p) ~ still 1-0 … it’s not the mountain we feared. AFC MOTM Almunia or Song.
241. 1-0 is not so bad, we still can beat them at home…we just need to make sure we don’t concede or the task will be harder…
242. Guess neither manager really happy with the result
243. Mr. Bob,
We were really in early season Hull City, Fulham mode. When a team drops back and plays the counter, you have to attack the gaps and cause them to get out of position, we were passing all over the place but Man U looked at ease! thats what I didnt like, they were just too damn comfortable in defence!!
Anyway, we will do it at home!
244. PB, we were rather crappy but I still love the Arsenal.
245. should have and could have been 3 or 4 -nil. will the mancs rue the missed chances? yes they will.
246. “Young Gibbs did well..”
Now pass that BBC sofa~
247. PB, I have to give it up for Giibbs, for his first CL match he did us proud.
248. I think Ferguson will take the result. Won, didn’t concede. They have an advantage. But we’ve been playing very well at home in the champions league, so it’s not all doom.
249. Queen of Suburbia
Young Mr Gibbs was superb tonight. His effort and concentration and talent were of the highest level.
250. DG, I think Man U fans are rather afraid! I am sure they are saying, as bad as Arsenal looked and only 1 goal?
We will be ready at the Emirates!
251. Yes, Gibbs was very good. Made a mistake in the first half but was otherwise solid.
Almunia and Song were excelent. Too much maligned players in thep ast.
252. We haven’t conceded at home for ages. Worth bearing in mind.
253. I mean “two”, of course. I blame lack of sleep.
254. We’re 0 – 1 down end of the first half so still in with a chance. Even when we are not at our best man u only manage 1 goal. Arsene will shuffle his pack and we’ll see the real Arsenal at home. Come on you Gunners. No more injuries and hopefully Clichy and RVP return to give us some more experience in the team.
255. NEN, its not doom at all!
I am encouraged!!
256. Queen of Suburbia
We’ve got to beat them 2-0 now.
Its a big ask. I think Fergie is the happier of the two managers. Rueful maybe, but happier.
257. still on for the rematch of arse vs barca.
258. Passenal, I would have loved to have RVP in this match.
I forgot that we had these players to come back from Injury. Maybe Djourou can get ready also, I would prefer him as he gives us more height.
259. Crappy game or no crappy game….the boys stood strong after extreme early pressure……
260. Thats Ok QoS, we will get it done.
Anyone can tell that the team was apprehensive, I think the moment got to the players in the first half and we didnt play with creative freedom. Seemed more worried about the counter attack than attacking ourselves but this will not be repeated at home.
261. hopefully they will get a bit complacent and come for the bore draw and end up with an arsewhipping.
262. That they did Maria, no one will take that away from the team.
263. what did you guys think of the formation…again i was a tad confused……
264. Al kept us in it and he will be the main reason we go through…almunia for england!
265. On the balance of play 1-0 to Man U sadly seems a fair result. Like everyone pointed out we did’nt hit them on the break with speed and incisiveness. Walcott and Nasri were too peripheral in the game and I had hoped they would have had more opportunities to show what they could do.
I had feared that the line up we mustered would’nt have enough direct players and the statistic of 3 shots on goal seems to prove that. A Van Persie or Arshavin may have tested VDS from 20 yards far more than a Diaby.
Diaby and Cesc were a bit disappointing today. Gave the ball away too much and could’nt find the killer passes today. Ade’s first touch was diabolical today. Song, Gibbs and Almunia were outstanding. Gibbs looks a sure shot to play for England before he turns 21 if he progresses as well as he is doing.
Barring his error for the first goal I thought Silvestre did all right as did Toure. We can still overturn the deficit at the Grove. Up the Arsenal!
266. Almunia was off the charts! big ups!!!!!
267. Toure was outstanding.
268. Ponyboy, I’m not Ade’s number 1 fan, but I do feel I have to defend him when he is unfairly slated or not given enough credit when it is earned. He was isolated up front and the midfield were feeding him scraps, so what exactly was he supposed to do?
269. funny how everyone (well i was ) worried about the defence yet it was the midfield and attack that were poor tonight and the defence was good.
270. Theo lost us the game. Nasri was too cool and Diaby was really shit. May be Arsene should have brought on Eboue instead of Bendtner.
There is future for Gibbs and he seems to be improving game after game. He needs to bulk up and improve his strength. He really managed both Ronaldo and Rooney.
Can we do 2:0 at the Emirates?
271. Back four were excellent…..the MF was were we lost the game…..was impressed again with Bentner’s link up play wish he put away that header….
272. Cesc playing upfront was wrong. Cesc is always better from the deep that’s why Ade had no support.
273. Queen of Suburbia
its possible. Hard but possible.
1 – nil in normal time, then the pace of Vela off the bench in extra time grabbing the winner…. Yeah it can be done
274. Ade couldnt do much at all and it was not his fault.
275. why is Cesc playing in the hole when Diaby is excellent there and Nasri in the centre……..i was confused….
276. Gibbs will take that asshole cole’s spot for england.
Almunia is world class (that bit was for Howard).
We lost 1-0 in Roma and look how that turned out.
277. “The lost us the game”
oh boy.
DG, I think our mid broke down aside from Song who was great as has been said.
278. Nasri= DM
279. Bendtner was great when he came on. I’ve been impressed with him all season.
280. Cesc, seems too slow to play forward, he isnt back at his best mind you. I do think Nasri is more suited for that role. Not only is he skillfull but he is a smart player who can pick a pass, Diaby not so much.
281. al- 10
sagna – 8
kolo – 8
silvestre- 7
gibbs – 9
cesc – 5
song – 6
nasri – 6
theo – 5
diaby – 5
ade – 5
282. “Theo lost us the game that is”
283. Good result IMO. Seriously, just one goal down. We’re lucky not to have conceded more. Good showing by the boys. Not a bad result.
284. Big Al-11
285. Ateeb – agree, could have been worse.
286. I think Arsene has been forced into playing Cesc further forward because of the need to strengthen the midfield with 2 holding players in order to protect the makeshift defence. Maybe the signs tonight that the defence is starting to gel will allow him to return to 4-4-2 with RVP as the link between midfield and the main striker.
287. Passenal –
– i know.. am not blaming here; just frustrated. With RvP, (and hopefully Ferdinand out (?) [ Nik was a bit brutal there!] ~ he will come good; was surprised at how well they defended.
288. why was the midfield so poor today?? there was a goal for the taking… did wenger get the positions wrong? what is our best team??
289. Only a 6 for Song? What more could he have done?
290. So any clues on the formation second semi were it was a complete surpise….n did’nt work may i add…..
Pb know how you feel but this is only half team….
291. Hope we play Cesc in a deep lying playmaker role in the second leg. We could have done with a player like Eboue today. Somebody who could have run tirelessly at the United defence and forced a foul from Vidic at worst or crossed for a Ade header at best.
Diaby really is a conundrum! On some days his surging runs and ball control delight football purists and on some days (like today) he can be shockingly casual in giving the ball away or tries to take on too many defenders/midfielders at the same time. I guess the only position we could still try him in the second leg is in the hole behind Ade.
292. Steve you’re right. Almunia is now up there. Gibbs will get an England called up soon.
Gibbs has done himself a lot of good and will be competing with Clichy in a year or two.
Gibbs was full of nerves the first 20 minutes but he coped well later. Mind you he’s done well so far playing:
Wigan
Chelsea
Villareal
Liverpool
Manu
All these games coming within three days of each other and only at 19.
Cashley Cole beware, your England position is at risk.
293. Fair enough, Duke – but would rather those figures were in reverse order!
294. Really hope Rio is out would love to see Evans against RVP…..
295. Sorry, Duke, but I don’t think much of your ratings.
296. ermm. sorry poliziano..he could have scored..no seriously maybe a 7 then. he still didnt play aswell as he has done lately. best of a bad bunch today.
297. An away goal would have been nice but the result is not that bad. We can beat anyone 2-0 at home.
Top marks to Almunia he was brilliant tonight and Song was enormous in midfield. Theo could not get into the game but it will be a different prospect at the Emirates. Remember, it is still only half time, we are not out of it.
298. MS – 9 for me……..
299. hang on the defence played well but dont forget man utd were poor finishers today aswell, they could have scored more..so our defence didnt excactly snuff them out completely.
300. We will not play this casual at home and Man U will try to hold the 0-1 lead and get us on the counter. All in all it is was a soft goal to concede and Almunia and the defense took care of the other chances, apart from the cross bar on one.
For a home team, Man U never really tried to attack apart from the counter, and if they try that at the emirates, they will get pasted.
301. Passenal -
- i know.. am not blaming here; just frustrated. With RvP, (and hopefully Ferdinand out (?) [ Nik was a bit brutal there!] ~ he will come good; was surprised at how well they defended.
Glad to hear it Ponyboy. I just don’t think it’s right to single out one player in a team game. We didn’t really gel and we allowed man u too much possession and therefore the opportunity to control the tempo and of the game. However, the good points are that we dug in (thanks largely to Big Al) and kept the score down to a level where we are still in with a chance.
302. Thats not True DG, Almunia was great, it had nothing to do with poor finishing from Man U.
Just like Cech last night, he was great and kept Barca out when the defence was breached.
303. Paul N
You’re on me. We lost because Theo was played out of the game. He was marked by Evra and Rooney and Rooney came to life after Theo was off.
The whole plan was based on the right side of the midfield. Theo was to go behind the defenders and causing problems but it never worked. We had no width because Diaby was also shit. Diaby kept on losing the ball all the time.
4 years at Arsenal and 1 year off injured and still playing shit.
304. 3-0 next week….i can just see a VR repeat….hope the crowd gives them the confidence they need……
@ Pass what did you think of the tactics…..??
305. The team did not play well howard! so no need to say that we “lost” the game because of one player, regardless of the plan of attack.
Cesc, Diaby, Walcott, Nasri did not play well on a whole but thats life!
We will get them in the return fixture.
306. We are all frustrated Howard but blasting our players is not the way to blow off steam.
307. ……..Rio to get a X-ray on his ribs………
308. I have witnessed one of the most stupid inept performances of an Arsenal player – given the context and the importance of the occassion – in my 25 years of watching them.
Adebayor
For the goal, the ball flicked across the penalty area to a UTD player and he has a brain breakdown and decides to leave his man and trot off out of the area with not alone the ball not cleared but the ball is still in the box at the feet of a UTD player looking to cross it back in. It comes to his man who taps it in. HE SHOULD NEVER PLAY FOR ARSEANAL AGAIN. CRIMINAL…what professional negligence
He is 6ft 4 ” and did not win one ball all night against Ferdinand and Vidic. When Arsenal needed an outlet nothing stuck to him and he brought no one into play
HE DID NOT TRY – Look at how UTDs forwards closed down relentlessly – he jogged around
He did not once try to run beyond UTDs defence
People here lambasted Myles Palmer for calling him a donkey after the Chelsea game. We owe Myles an apology….
309. Adebayor will probably score against UTD next week and I truly hope he does but it should change nothing. We should get rid of him and get a proper centre forward in
310. alanG, are you upset with Ade?
311. People lambast Myles cause he regularly comes out with CRAP ANALYSIS!!!
312. alanG,
i think thats a bit rodney marsh mate…like Passenal pointed out earlier , he was isolated and dont forget it was his fukin goal that helped get us in the semis.
313. alan G,
Its Chelsea supporting Palmer who should apologise to Arsenal Football Club and its fans for feeding off them for a decade and yet running them down at every opportunity.
I am not Ade’s biggest fan but who in their right mind would call him a donkey? I think its out of order and highly disparaging. All said and done, Adebayor is one of the top 10 strikers in thw world and his market value reflects that fact as well.
314. it was very hard for Theo with Rooney and Evra double teaming him.
Almunia – quality !
Gibbs – superb for such a young lad.
Nasri – for long periods he was running the middle for us.
The gap between Ade and the rest of the team tended to be too big didn’t it ?
Not sure about Cesc in the advanced role. More pace needed in that role.
Could have been 3-0 so we can’t complain.
My gut tells me it’s a big ask now. Hopefully I’m wrong.
315. Alex,
some may say being called a donkey is a compliment.
316. There was no service or support from the mid and the Man U defense could double him at every turn. We played too slow and the Man U defense had a walk in the park. How you blame Ade for that is beyond me, unless you want him to play in the Mid.
So what if he made a mistake, Man U only scored one.
317. Can’t blame Diaby, Cesc or Nasri – all of them were being played out of position. Would you play Vieria on the left wing? Its hard to expect Ade to play Ferdinand and Vidic all on his own in a European Cup final with no-one coming through from midfield to help.
Almunia however was outstanding. Silvestre was great and Kolo played very well also. Young Gibbs is a real talent in the making despite having a torrid first half. We conceded from a set piece yet again. The player who was at fault was Ade. If you look at the replay – he leaves the back post prematurely and Kolo drifts into the centre leaving 2 UTD players over. It’s the simple things that have killed us – and again we learn, just as we did against Liverpool and against Chelski – you’ve got to do the simple things right at this level.
Its very hard no to see UTD scoring at the emirates – which will mean that we may have to score 3 times to win this. We could have easily shipped 4 goals tonight and that is no exaggeration. We never once really looked like scoring. If we buy one thing in the summer – its got to be a no nonsense defensive coach like Keown.
318. 1-0 is ok given the poor start
A 2-1 would be better but there you are
Almunia excellent, Toure immense, Gibbs got stronger – even Silvestre, who terrifies me played solidly and used all his experience (showed he deserved the nod over the inexperienced Djourou)
The midfield 3 did better than against chelsea – Song was strong and matched them. Nasri did ok.
FAB in the hole does not work – he doesn’t have the pace to burst past a Ferdinand. But – we’re short on options. Perhaps switch him with Nasri?
Diaby was pretty poor overall
Walcott was starved of ball and space but because Diaby was on the left UTD only had one genuine wing threat to worry about
319. Did Rooney score…….NO
Did Ronaldo score…….NO
Did Terev score…….NO
and they had excellent service…..
Attacking Ade on this one not kool
Look at Diaby, Theo, Cesc, Nasri
320. Joe is spot on.
Ade up front on his own versus those 2 CB’s is a tough tough ask.
And for their goal, not doing the simple things cost us again. That is exactly right.
321. It’s disappointing that we didn’t do more on the night, but I really cannot understand the mentality of people who turn on our players in the difficult moments. That is not helpful and it will not change the result so what is the point?
322. Can we do it with these players. 2-1 would have been better than 1:0
ARE THESE PLAYERS GOOD ENOUGH.
It will be very tough at the Emirates scoring two goals without a reply.
In Gibbs, we have a legend in the making.
323. All is not lost. Let’s not go to bed with heavy hearts.
Come on Arsenal.
324. come on Joe, people score goals in matches. There is no defence that doesnt make mistakes.
We have been the best defensive unit of late in the PL and we are the in form team.
Teams score, people make mistakes.
Matty, man up yo, we will do it.
325. bradys right foot
The back four and the keeper were excellant and have kept this tie very much alive after a very shaky opening 20 minutes apart from Ronaldos shot and one or two dangerous balls into the box we coped admirably. Uniteds pressing game paid divideneds but as the tired the expected surge from the Gunners didn’t materialise which was disappointing. I actually take a huge amount of encouragement from the last sixty minutes of the game. We know key players simply didn’t perform to the expected level such as Cesc. A word to anyone who doubted Wengers faith in Song – He is the holding player we have been waiting for and was excellant tonight, he is maturing with every minute on the pitch and will be a huge player in the coming years. I cannot think of a better player in his position anywhere at the age of 21.
326. We we will score 3 then.
Why is it that we cant keep Man U from scoring at home?
327. I know my rant against Adebayor is pretty savage but what he did for that corner was fuck*ng incredible. It shows a complete lack of discipline and understanding of his role in defending set pieces. It shows either complete stupidity and or complete carelessness about his role for the team
Hoddle, Souness and Gullitt almost fell off their seats on SKY watching it on analysis – they could not believe it !!
328. thats good bradys right foot!
329. yep i agree Paul N.
330. It will be hard to keep UTD scoreless at home given our defensive blooper roll but
psychologically UTD will be thinking they should have finished things and that will play a bit with them
so lets go for it
I take the point that putting the boot in players is sometimes easy but I am always happy once I feel each player has given his all. For example, I don’t think FAB played well but ne tried for the 90
Can anyone look me in the face, metaphorically speaking, and say that about Mr. Beyonce tonight???
331. altough tonight we didnt see song play as well as he can.
332. why does bendtner come on every game he is so poor and that header was a sitter at the top level. Why didn’t we just bring on eduardo to partner ade and have vela on the bench to come on to.
333. Just got back from the pub.We were awful.Cesc cannot play the second striker role
alsnG you are so right about Greedy”s defending.It summed up his whole game.His is so lazy.We looked much more dangerous when Super Nic came on.He must start next week and remember he played in the league win.
We needed that away goal but NEVER LOOKED LIKR GETTING IT
334. Arsene has just commented that there will be a different Arsenal on Tuesday. He praised Gibbs for keeping Ronaldo under control.
335. BRF……what amazes me is that after all taht waiting for for a DM for Cesc all season and when Song finally stakes his claim on the position we move Cesc up front crazy really…..
Nasri really should have been on the left wing
Diaby behind the Adebayor and Cesc alongside Song
I am however very pleased that Alumnia is getting the credit he deserves….
P.S Let’s all hope Rio is injured for the game next week….without him in defence they leak goals worse than West Brom…..
……………..COME ON YOU GUNNERS……………….
336. Mr.Beyonce………..omg….that was the first time i have laughed all night…..shame really…..
337. bradys right foot
Its only 1:0 and in the cold light of day if i’d have been offered it before the game i’d have taken it. At 2:0 the games dead at 1:0 we are very much in this tie and have the players to turn UTD over at the Grove. It’ll take a stunning performance and or a bit of luck but given the last three years of injury hell maybe the footballing gods owe us something. Players like Cesc and Nasri will want to put this performance behind them with a good outing next week. Personally I wouldn’t play Ade his attitude is appalling and for a big man he’s a light weight. Bendtnar would match the United centre halfs physically.
338. I think I’ll go to bed before this place degenerates any further.
339. Paul N,
I am a very optimistic person and someone who reveres what Wenger has achieved.
But it is naive to think we don’t have problems in our defense. Otherwise we wouldn’t be forced into playing 2 DCM to shore it up. The only thing that has prevented us from shipping more goals tonight was an outstanding display by Almunia – probably his best yet for this club and a great deal of luck. Truth is we are blessed to still be in this tie.
The real difficulty is that this has been going on for some 4 years now if were honest with ourselves. This is the reason we’re not winning anything. For all the miracles the Maestro works with developing players in midfield and creating attacking options – we are still a very very shaky unit at the back. Every single time a high ball comes across that back four (even with Gallas and Clichy) my heart is always in my mouth. I know we’ve had a good run going – but it really counts for nothing unless you can close out games at the business end of the season – Chelski in an FA Cup Semi Final we concede 6 mins from time, Liverpool in one of the key league games that could have helped us get to 3rd in the league and we ship four goals and concede in extra time, tonight in the second biggest match in the clubs history – we make mistakes in a set piece that a well disciplined schoolboy team wouldn’t make.
One step forward – two steps back.
340. Alex Ice Cream
Ade failed to hold the ball but was totally isolated. Diaby was horrible but out of position. Cesc did not look 100%.
Almunia was massive as was Song who at times fought a battle solo in midfield.
This tie should be over as we were well beaten tonight so we have to make ManU pay next week. They had their chance and know we must ensure that they regret not taking it.
341. bradys right foot
If you think the games beyond us look at what we did to Roma in the first leg and look how they made us pay in the away tie.
342. Good post Brady’s right foot. People are forgetting that we weren’t against just another team, but rather the champions of Europe. Say whatever you want to say, but they’re the top team in europe for a reason. The fact that we got a 1-0 result, is something that is very encouraging, especially if you consider we were playing away from home. SAF, would be pissed right now, for they could have ended the tie today, but they didn’t. They missed their chances, or let’s just say they weren’t good enough to get the ball past Almunia. We have alot of positives to take away from this game. Our defence looked good, and Song was the BEST midfielder out there by a mile. He outshone, not only his own team mates, but also Anderson, Carrick and Fletcher.
What didn’t work for us, was Cesc playing in the whole. If you’re going to try the counter attacking game, then have someone with pace. Which Cesc clearly is not. So it seems Cesc should be pulled back, and let Nasri takeover that hole. So that both players play in their natural positions. Really can’t single out any one player for the goal. The way I saw it, many of our midfielders weren’t even in the box.
And f*** off Howard. Theo didn’t lose the game for us. He was well marked by both Evra and Rooney. BUt still managed to go on a couple of good runs, which on another day could have resulted in a goal. So take your crap elsewhere.
As for Adebayor. What the f*** do you guys expect from him? He was against the best centre half pairing in Europe. He had little support, from the midfield. You had the right to crucify him if he had missed a couple of chances, but he didn’t. Because there were none. As for Diaby, he was just ok. He is over confident about his dribbling abilities. Fine, I know he can get past 2-3 players at a time. But trying to get past 5 on his own, well, let’s just say he’s not there yet. Should have kept it simple.
And the most positive thing to look forword to for the next leg will be the return of RRRVVVVPPPP!!!!!
343. Joe….what do you think about the way MANyOO defend when they are without Rio or Vidic….??
Or Chelski without JT it’s all relative i think….
Tonight our defence was excellent and every time ManRE raided our half they were equal to them so PLEASE can we NOT bitch about them 4 once……..
344. Maria,
Im not bitching about the players Maria..!!!
The players were outstanding – I’ve said that already if you read my earlier post. But we do have a problem in defending set pieces and closing out games we should win. This is down to collective defensive discipline.
I could always close my eyes and pretend there’s no problem at all but until we learn from this – then this team will never attain its true potential.
If Ferdinand is out next week – Feguson could play Johnny Evans at CB or Play John O’Shea CB and bring in either DaSilva or Neville. This is a team that deems Silvestre or Pique surplus to requirements. This team currently are the European Champions and are on their way to retaining the premiership yet again. As for Chelsea – its unfair to compare us to Chelsea given their resources but suffice to say if JT gets injured in the morning they can bring in a player like Carvalho to partner Alex / Ivanovic.
Its not relative Maria. Its an area we’ve neglected and we’re paying for it big time.!
345. Evans…better than a fit JD?? I think not….
346. Ateeb
It seems you’re blind to read my post well. Are you shortsighted?
347. Sorry Joe. We’ve heard all this before.
Manchester United and Chelsea paid for their defenders. Their combined debt is £1.2 billion.
We choose not to match their spending, and don’t give me that crap about just spending the odd £6 million for a defender. How much do you think Ferdinand, Alex, Boswinga and Carvalho cost ? Peanuts ??
You choose not to mention the absence of Clichy and Gallas. Did Chelsea or Manchester United have any of their first choice players injured – no. Once again, we are unlucky with injuries.
348. Howard,
Lol. Well I’m not really bothered to go scroll up and read your posts again. That theo remark was meant for someone who was slating the young man. But it seems I lashed out at you. You’re my scapegoat tonight. Deal with it. Song dealt with your crap all season.
349. bradys right foot
The Utd team on the pitch tonight cost well over £100 million we cost less than £30 million. Show me another team who can compete at the top level with these resources, 1:0 down at half time were still in the game.
350. ……..ManYoo dip in form this season directed correlated with the second string defence playing illstrating that their strength dept is’nt superior to us even after spending millions upon millions..
Yet people complain when MS a 3rd choice CB who was outstanding tonight makes one or two mistakes coming back from a injury amazing……
351. Joe, how was evans against fulham and porto? and vidic and ferdinand against liverpool? you know defenders make mistakes. ours as well.
352. Have you noticed that we normally don’t play too well in that away jersey? I mean we struggle playing in that jersey.
We’ll win at the Emirates.
Let’s all take it out of chests and get to sleep soundly.
Good night
353. Howard is a nice bloke really – lol.
354. bradys right foot
A word for Silvestre tonight thought he had a very good game was obviously up for it against his old team.
355. BFG….these D&G fans have a major problem with prespective….some ‘fans’ on the radio were a discrace tonight bitching, moaning and lambasting individual performances….reverting back to a old favourite AW is too stubborn these players arent good enough….major overhall need nest season….Denilson, Diaby MS out….etc shocking really…..and to think we didnt disgrace ourselves like Shamski did yesterday and keep the World, European and league leaders to a 1-0 win. @ home mind you…
Anyhoo i say blame the Spuds who gave them the perforance and confidence they needed this weekend…can’t do anything right can they…..!!!
356. Wenger repeatedly said in his post-match press conference that in the second leg we “will see a different Arsenal team”. Now, we know when Wenger chooses words that he wants to say more than once, he often means quite a lot by them – can we interpret this to mean more than just his team will play differently, but that he will select different personnel? A mounting frustration perhaps with the lacklustre performances of Adebayor?
357. Muppet,
Hahahaha. He really is.
358. ………Dunno CB but i was happy to see Eduardo on the pitch…..i really miss that guy…..however it was Ade that got us here….
359. I agree about Eduardo, I just wish he had ten minutes more, but I can certainly understand Wenger’s thinking. We did not want to concede two.
Let’s revert to 4-4-2 and start Eduardo and Bendtner. Show Ade that he has to produce every week, not just when he feels like it.
360. A good performance against Man U close to their best.
If anyone tells me Almunia isn’t world class…..
…And Gibbs – what a player
361. We were so good we should’ve won by 3 but I blame the pitch was not watered well and the yellow kit didn’t help us. So according to Wenger we will see a different team next week. Does he mean a different kit.
362. SB….take a hike your childish antics would’nt receive a healthy response here…..
363. Maria were you on talkshite today?
364. Maria,
Please don’t put words in my mouth. I havn’t slated the players – merely observed that we have a discipline problem in defending set pieces and closing games out at vital times.
Muppet – I did actually mention the point about resources when I said it was unfair to make direct comparisons. I did also mentioned the fact that even with Gallas and Clichy – I still think were suceptible to set pieces if you kindly care to check.
Notlager – I accept the fact that players make mistakes. But do you accept that this is not just about individual errors – but defensive organisation and discipline. Can you not see that? The plaey at fault tonight for the goal was actually Ade. And Im one of Ade’s staunchest defenders on this blog – but there is no excuse to abdoning the back post and leaving two players free.
Do you think the team was set up correctly tonight? Do you think playing Cesc (the best CM in the world) in the hole was a success (despite already trying this against liverpool and Chelski)? Do you think playing Nasri – a player who can naturally play in the hole and at left wing was best suited at DCM? Do you think playing diaby at left wing was a good call when we’ve tried to play him there for the last two years and its hasn’t worked? Especially with players like Eduardo or Nasri or Eboue as options?
Tonight was a fu*king shambles. We were played off the park. As well as our defense did – the only things that prevented this tie from being over was sheer and utter luck. And every Arsenal fan who watched that game knew that we got away with it tonight.
365. Joe- Spot on we got away with it. Some people here are fooling themselves.
366. “Do you think the team was set up correctly tonight? Do you think playing Cesc (the best CM in the world) in the hole was a success (despite already trying this against liverpool and Chelski)? Do you think playing Nasri – a player who can naturally play in the hole and at left wing was best suited at DCM? Do you think playing diaby at left wing was a good call when we’ve tried to play him there for the last two years and its hasn’t worked? Especially with players like Eduardo or Nasri or Eboue as options?”
All valid points but while i was’nt directing my comments to you but in general you aren’t orignal with your views on our defence which i think are quality…….as they are the ONLY reason we remained unbeaten for large parts of this season and really don’t appreciate the constant abuse they receive from so called fans and pundits…….
367. P.S that spot on from SB should tell you something….
368. This isn’t a bad result. The fact that we were outplayed the whole game and came out of OT with only a deficit of 0-1 was actually a pretty good result to take to the 2nd leg.
Hopefully we will be over running them instead of us in the return leg. Fab was making plenty of mistakes with his passes. Uncharacteristic of him. Ade was pretty much ineffective as is Diaby. We cannot play with Diaby in the left side of the midfield. He is not suited to play there. I think the team would be more balanced if Eboue (right) and Nasri (left) were deployed.
369. whether we got away and Man U shoulda, coulda, woulda scored more goals is irrelevant, THEY DIDNT! Apart from the first 20 minutes or so we kept them quiet.
Lets get them at home!
370. Almunia, our hero!
371. Arsenal’s advantage is that at the weekend they can play Pat Rice at right back and Arsene Wenger can play centre forward -fergie
372. I think we started the game nervous and the goal didn’t help. The sleazy Man Sh*t fans picked up on it and that’s why they were booing and whistling. I think the only one that held his nerves was Almunia.
===
Funny thing Man Sh*t scored from a corner, and with all the chances they had they didn’t score from open play.
===
Not sure why people blaming Ade for not doing anything, when he didn’t have anything come his way to do anything with?
We never really clicked, but we are still in it and we can beat them at home, we just have to show up though.
373. We were poor last night. Man United will get the plaudits for keeping us out of the tie but I have to ask when was the last time Arsenal were ever locked out and reduced to 3 chances? Yesterday I said 3 things would be key to beating the mancs.
1. Press Carrick. We never did that. He had a field day. Fabregas was good at pressing the Man poo centre halfs but Carrick it was he had to be pressing.
2. Track midfield runners. We did not do this either. Diaby, Nasri, Fabregas & Theo were very very poor at this yesterday and they allowed Fletcher and Anderson too much latitude.
3. Attack the spaces behind their defence targeting Vidic. Nasri, Diaby, Fabregas and Theo were not incisive enough. It took us way too long to get our attacks going.
Finally, I love Wenger to death but our last 2 cup games and the Liverpool game has shown that we’re not great at sitting back. In those three games we’ve sat back hoping to counter-attack and have failed woefully to pull it off.
374. Fergie should slot in well as a ‘striker’ of the refrees at Middlesborough and a defender of Rooney’s and Ronaldo’s petulance. Its such a pleasure to see him respect the ‘Respect’ campaign of the FA.
375. Predict AW going to play:
Al
Sagna Toure Djouru Gibbs
Walcott Denilson Nasri Arshavin
Fab4
Bentner
against Portsmounth. Get Toure, Djouru & Walcott injured.
Lost to ManUSA 0-2 at home and end the season with empty hand again!
After that we beat ManUSA in the league after they claim the title a week before the match against Arsenal.
In June, AW will claim that Arsenal have the squad to challenge in 2009/10 because we defeated ManUSA twice! Senderos is coming back so there isn’t a need to buy another centre defender!
376. India Gunner,
Its great to know you have the crystal ball I greatly crave. The last few years have seen lots of ups and downs but I wonder if cynicism is the best antidote to our disappointment as fans.
I reckon the line up for Portsmouth will be –
Fabianski
Sagna Toure Djourou Gibbs
Eboue Denilson Diaby Arshavin
Bendtner Eduardo
377. india gunner got a point there , i can see us beating manpoo in the league
378. we need width in both flanks ,if clichy is fit play gibbs infront of him ,its his natural position and his crossing has been good
379. Where is all this negativity coming from? We just held the best team in the world to a 1-0 away from home in the semi-final of the top competition – and we made our own luck. Came back into the game in last 10 mins of H1 and played a solid H2. We are still in it…..
The Times rates Gibbs 5/10 – give me a break – you have to take into account the quality of the opposition in rating the defence, who played far better than in the Liverpool 4-4
380. …the Mancs f*cked it up last night….that was their chance to go through….they could not keep up their high tempo pressing game for more than 30 minutes….they only scored in that 30 minutes…after that they fizzled….
…great support from the away fans….not so all the bloggers it seems….
…..Arsenal for the final after next Tuesday…you’d better believe it….oh and whiners…you know who you are…F*ck off…..
….Arsenal….
381. …And I notice that the possession stats went from 70/30 after 20/25 mins to 52/48 by the end
382. …exactly, bj…and the stats will move in our direction on Tuesday…so will the goals….
….Arsenal…
383. …I don’t read the sh*tty little rag that goes under the name of a previously august publication…just the Daily Mirror in disguise…and I don’t believe in player ratings…but if the Times rated Kieran Gibbs 5/10 for last night performance…it says it all about the ability of their hacks…0/10 for journalism….
….Arsenal….
384. Can’t believe some people acting like Man United are already through. This is not over yet and we will be fired up for the home leg. The home crowd will need to be as loud as the sound of war, but I will be proud of the team whether we go through or not.
Another thing: Young Kieran Gibbs, 19 years old, in the starting line up. I’m aware that he made errors last night and his performance wasn’t up to his usual standard, but think about how invaluable this experience is for him. When you see players who are 16/17 years old who look promising you think “nice player, I just hope he makes it”, that’s what I remember thinking of Gibbs a few seasons back when Wenger brought him on in the Emirates Cup. Flash foward two years later and he’s in the starting line up in a Champions League semi-final away at Old Trafford. Awesome beyond words.
And what about Mr Almunia eh, is that still not world class enough yet for the doubters?
Come on Arsenal
385. My internet connection went down last night after the match. Thank God! There was some b*ll*cks posted last night. Ateeb was an honourable exception.
386. Where do these idiots like Tommy come from?
nightmare performance, weak team with no desire. -Diaby is the worst player i have ever seen in an Arse shirt, and i have seen a few ********* over the years….
No passion.
worst person i’ve ever seen claiming to be an Arsenal fan? and i have seen a few of them over the years… no passion!
387. I’d hope that people were just letting off some steam last night.
388. Wenger must know something about Eduardo that he cant tell us regarding his leg, keeping fergie guessing maybe. Surely Eduardo would of featured more otherwise.
Plan for next week – ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK
389. They seem to have heads full of nothing but steam.
390. Although faecal matter also lets off some steam occasionally…sh1t for brains might be the problem here.
391. Mancs played a very good and tactically astute game and messed up. AW knows. Fergie knows.
Arsenal kept it deep, slowed the game, gradually asserted their game and on the whole it worked, although it wasn’t the attacking game the fans would have liked.
Almunia was a giant. Gibbs too.
Advantage ManU … but Arsenal have an excellent chance at home. Recall a dozen past games when we have been down at half-time. Big games.
Please try to remember everyone our team is young and learning fast, and these power games, close quarter midfield, crowded and against good opposition is exactly what we need. You’ll see!
GO GUNNERS
392. Keep the faith. We are doing fine.
Don’t be seduced by the media.
Wait and see, the young players will find the key that fits this particular lock … and let’s give a bit of credit ManU played very well (Tevez, Roon) but then the ball tended to fall for them too …
393. ZimPaul, I wouldn’t exactly say it worked. I think its fair to say we’ve used are good fortune up for this tie. If we sit back like that again we’ll lose. Attack, attack, attack. We must go for there throat from the whistle
394. I am one of those saddo’s that watches the game again the next day. I just reviewed last night and as usual it is interesting the different points that spring to mind when you watch it without the emotion and stress of watching it live.
Picking Tevez instead of Berbatov seemed to work very well for ManU. He got in the hole between Song and our defence to great effect. Based on the first 30 mins I didn’t share the opinion that Alex Song had a great game – although he certainly got hold of the midfield more as the game progressed.
I love Cesc to bits. But he doesn’t look right to me at the moment. I would prefer him in his normal role, and his body language suggests he feels the same. There was a couple of occasions when the ball dropped to hik or close to him in threatening situations, and his lack of pace meant he didn’t take advantage of it. If we persist with the 4-5-1 thing then I’d prefer Nasri/Eddy/Diaby in the hole with Cesc deeper next to Song.
I said it after Boro on Sunday and I’ll say it again – Diaby on left doesn’t work. Play him in the middle and he looks far more comfortable.
The Diaby slaggers on here are clueless by the way.
We all hate him, but blimey does Rooney work hard. His work negating down their left was the reason why we couldn’t get Theo one on one v Evra.
Ferguson’s substitutions showed us how much he knew he needed another goal.
Respect to Silvestre, big test and he passed.
Almunia is the best keeper in the EPL.
I don’t blame Ade for his performance upfront, it was a very hard ask up there on his own, but he wasn’t concentrating for their goal was he ?
So, advantage ManU, but it could have been so much worse.
395. It was a difficult night. Too close to the Chelsea semi for comfort really. We have a hard second leg to face but this team can do anything, we’ve seen it.
I didnt rate the manu midfield last night, too many makeweights and Song was the best midfielder on the park. We really should have done better there than we did. Yep, we contained them but threatened very little.
I really would like to know what’s going on with Eddy. I think, if fully fit, he would be playing more. Saturday might tell us more.
No question that we miss RVP. So much goes through him and he has a spark that few have.
396. We were poor. Only positive is that we only lost 1-0
397. We shouldn’t forget we didn’t have a full squad available. The mancs did.
