Arsenal Tonk Villarreal & March Into Semi’s

UEFA Champions League, Quarter Final, Second Leg
Arsenal 3 – 0 Villarreal

Arsenal win 4 – 1 on aggregate

1 – 0 Walcott (9)
2 – 0 Adebayor (60)
3 – 0 van Persie (69 pen)

For a match that was between two teams who were reputedly of a similar techinical ability, it was remarkably one-sided, underlining perhaps just how much this Arsenal side is underestimated. Arsene asked that the supporters got behind the team in a fair manner. He got his wish, boisterous vocal chords opened in support of the team and a reception for Robert Pires that showed highly he is regarded.

The team matched the crowd’s response, Walcott ruling the right flank from the kick-off which given his opponent is a seasoned international for the current European champions indicates the dominance Theo held. It paid off within ten minutes as Eboue rifled a pass to Fabregas who deftly touched the ball into Walcott’s path, the youngster exquisitely lofting the ball over the advancing Lopez. It was a finish that an experienced centre forward would have been proud of and is a teaser for the potential that Walcott has in that position in years to come.

The advantage could have been doubled when van Persie’s free kick was parried by Lopez, Adebayor’s effort from the rebound blocked on the line by Gonzalo. Arsenal had reason to be frustrated by the defender still being on the pitch for twice in the preceding five minutes, he committed fouls that were worthy of a yellow card, the second scraping his studs down Song’s (I think) Achilles which could have been a straight red.

It was not all one-way traffic. Before Walcott’s opener, Godin lost his marker at a set piece and volleyed his shot into Fabianski’s chest. That was a rare moment of threat from the visitors. Given the absence of Sagna, a late withdrawal through a fever, the defence did extremely well with Toure  the only first choice defender on show. There were moments when things went awry but that happens with the strongest XI.

One reason that the performance was solid is Fabianski. His confidence from the start was total; he held Godin’s shot well and punched well, having travelled a fair distance from his line to make contact. On top of that, he minimised the gap between the area and the back four by patrolling the edge when the ball was in the other half, responding to threats to relieve some of the pressure.

The second half began with Villarreal on the front foot but that mini-revival was nipped in the bud when van Persie released Adebayor on the left side of the box, the ball nestling in the bottom right corner as Lopez advanced. At that point the tie was effectively over, a point confirmed less than ten minutes later when Walcott was brought down in the area. The ensuing melee around the officials resulted in Eguren being dismissed, presumably for dissent. van Persie confidently dispatched the penalty and Arsenal proceeded to coast to the semi-final.

There were a number of commendable performances. Eboue and Gibbs provided solid cover at the back whilst supporting the attack well. Silvestre and Toure were reliable in the middle. However, the game was won in midfield. Song was excellent, foraging for the ball well, his distribution for the most part, immaculate. Fabregas influenced the game in all areas, despite playing deeper. It was not as vibrant a performance as when he is pushed further forward but no less effective.

Walcott, for me, was the star. He had Capdevila on the ropes all of the time, even if the end product was not always there. I would defy anyone to run at that pace with the ball and deliver the perfect cross or pass every single time. Even when the Spaniards ‘double-teamed’ him, he was able to use the ball productively, a sign of his growing maturity. Nasri was not as startling on the left but nonetheless, prompted well, using Gibbs as an outlet and decoy in equal measure.

Up front, van Persie and Adebayor played to their usual high standards. The Dutchman was excellent when dropping deeper to collect the ball and the visitors defence were suitably wary of Adebayor following his efforts in the first leg. That is not to say that he strayed offside too often – to the direct detriment of colleagues on one occasion – but his game is played on the shoulder of the last defender where the margin of error is minimal.

All in all, an excellent performance and a confidence boosting victory. Keeping a clean sheet was vital in that respect, this season’s Champions League Hallmark if you like. More importantly, it breathes fire into their bellies ahead of the FA Cup semi-final this weekend. The big games are coming thick and fast which we are constantly told is what the players thrive on. The next month and a half will show how much that is the case. I, for one, am looking forward to the ride.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. first one for the frst time

  2. She wore She wore

    She wore a yellow ribbon

  3. What a result… that should teach any1 to underestimate us! I said 4-0, should have been more to be fair

  4. Wenger’s Eboue quote was awesome:

“I knew that had Eboue who is as well very good and can play midfield, or right-back or anywhere.”

  5. I’ll bet Denilson and Diaby will be putting something nasty into Alex Song’s Ribena after that performance. It is such a joy to see him and Eboue play so well after the way some people have derided them.
This season, whilst having it’s frustrations, has been such an important one in the experience these young players have gained. Why would Gibbs have any fear of starting for the first team now? Exactly.
Thanks to those who were there for raising the roof. Great days to be a Gooner. All the sweeter for those of us who kept the faith.

  6. One light-hearted moment last night was when Fabregas tried to do an Adebayor (scissor kick) and got it all wrong. By then the tie was already won, so no harm done.

  7. Eboue, Song, Gibbs, Fabianksi all amazing!!

The younger lot starting to deal with the pressures and perform like they do in the Carling Cup. In exception to Eboue of course. You can say what you like about him, but what a squad player. Sagna by far more consistent and focussed is the reason why he was moved around. Defensively i think he showed massive improvements last night and offensively he can be a handful.

We have an amazing squad of players is all i can say. Vela, Eduardo, Arshavin, Rosicky, Gallas, Sagna, Clichy, and Almunia all missing from teh lineup says alot!!

  8. Ole

Eboue was marauding forward like a winger from his right back position. Once he can calm himself and deliver a better final ball or a better shot, he would be very very good.

  9. I am risking abuse – particularly from Maria – but Ade was disappointing. I wouldn’t mind if the offsides were from forward runs, but too often he was offside from failing to run back onside a long time after the opposing defence moved upfield.

Song was immense – and van P outstanding (eat your heart out Myles….)

    Gibbs for England?!

  10. Suddenly we look so strong! Even central midfield which was identified as our weak spot looks strong.

  11. Phil Brown the prick is still engaging in a childish spat on spitting. He should focus on Hull City’s survival in the premier league and grow up.

  12. anti – climatic.. was expecting somethin stronger from villareal after their first half performance at home..
dont think we even reached the third gear.. very very comfy i should say..
great game gibbs and lukas !!
nasri was slow to come into the game but picked up 2nd half..
not to be negative or anything here but i thot fab was poor in the 2nd half.. lotsa stray passes.. hopes he picks that up against chelsea..
agree walcott was good and so were rvp and ade but my MOTM is Song.. didnt let pires play at all and also cleaned up when fabregas messed up sometimes..
if song keeps lampard quit and toure can take care of drogba.. we can be goin to wembley once more..

  13. why me….Johan it should be passenal who worries you mate….i only get upset over Carlos…

  14. Big Johan

I have no issue with 1 goal for every 6 offsides, 4 goals in 5 games. Is that disappointing?

  15. Ade is the donkey of the team no??

  16. steww

just shows really,… its good alot of us have kept the faith though. Wenger is a great manager and a legend, how can anyone seriously doubt what he is doing. Up against all the millions we are playing players in the early 20s and Teen years and doing alrite. They can only improve and a tropy or 2 to cap it off will show all Arsenal fans that we are on the right track.

All those that might compare this team with the invincibles and double winning side of 98… think about this – how many times did they reach the semis of the Champs Leaggue. The same amount as this team is the answer!! they cant be that bad.

Competition domestically has increased, all teams are finding better defensive methods, recruiting better talent from abroad also. We just have to try keep one step ahead of them. Wenger is the man for that, he could have easily went out and splashed the cash in the summer yet we could be in the same position as we are now.

I wouldnt swap our squad for any1s right now … Arsenal till i die!!

  17. catch your ride BJ……

  18. ACLFers, happily my defensive fears were unfounded. This was an excellent team performance, if you ask me, aided and abetted by the enthusiasm of the 12th man. (From the vantage point of my TV, this is the noisiest I have heard the Emirates.) Of course, I am pleased as punch by the performances of Ade, Song and Eboue in particular who had my unwavering support in the face of some of the most vicious attacks from certain ignorant bloggers and posters.
One observation: Whats up with those numpties at Setanta especially Lou Macari? Apparently he only measures an attacker by the goals they score. Until Ade scored, he slagged him for every miscue, failing to observe that the Togonator was a thorn in the defenders side all evening. Similarly, the condecenson towards Eboue all night. No wonder Wenger says there is so much ignorance in football.

  19. Alex Ice Cream

It was almost surreal to be able to enjoy the last 20 minutes without the usual tension. We usually have to wait for the final whistle before we can relax.

I thought that the makeshift defence did well although Villareal did not put us under too much pressure as we dominated the midfield. Senna was a big loss for them but not more than us missing 4 of our first choice back 5.

It was a surprisingly comfortable night and we thoroughly deserved the 4-1 aggregate win.

It was great to have the opportunity to be able to bid farewell to Robert Pires who was given one of the best receptions I can remember for an ex-player.

  20. English pundits shotta usually have no sense of shame…nor do they illustrate any footballing intelligence therefore i only watch Sentanta with the mute button ON!!

Agreed on the 12th PERSON not man though…since allot of the ladies at the grove were in full voice….super super bobby pires….crowd did us proud with all the VR players claiming we had no atmosphere we really showed them what Arsenal F.C is all about…looserss………

  21. This is clearly the weakest team we have had since Arsene took over…..

Sorry, I’m on the wrong blog.

  22. bops -
give me an anti-climactic performance from the opposition anyday!
rarely been so nervous before a game; although ManUre will probably be even worse..
Atleast we quite LIKE Villareal..(especially now).

  23. Su-per, super Rob, Su-per, super Rob, Su-per Super Rob, Super Robert Pires!!

  24. Luke –
Had forgotten all about Breakdown.. has his sunbed attacked him ?

  25. big Johan

    try http://www.shittyspurs.com

think that site suits u better going by ur comments u yid

  26. Good report as per usual, YW.

“Robert Pires who was given one of the best receptions I can remember for an ex-player.”

And well deserved, too. One of my all time fave gunners.

  27. Arsene for the sack eeh johan…with Ade as his riding out donkey…poof… those goes the world wide recession sorted!!

  28. wat a great performance by the boys especialy theo & song.
agree 100% with big johan, when will addy ever learn about the offside law 6-7 times last night which is beyond a joke. It gives the ball back to the opposition straight away, which is counter productive. generaly looks lethargic, and does not work hard, his general play is poor, but you cannot fault him with the goals he has scored, but dare I say if we had someone like torres we would score a lot more chances. overall what a great performance bring on the chelski.as annie lennex said the only way is up

  29. The opposition is only as good as u allow them to be, all over the pitch we were hurrying their players, closing down and had a strong desire to not allow them to play and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

The boys are all quality and hungry for success… any team that comes against our lads are going to have to give everything to beat us. We have lots of fresh players back from injury: Ade, Cesc, Walcott and Arshavin is fresh also.. not to mention Eduardo. Injuries are hitting us, but i feel the team confidence and attitude right now will carry us through to glory

  30. Ade defending himself:

“I’ve never seen a striker who doesn’t get caught offside. That means you are either a defender or a midfielder.

“For me I might get caught offside three times in the game, but the next one I could get through and score.

“So yes I agree it’s good to notice when you are making mistakes, and I always try to learn, but it doesn’t mean I will not look to keep going behind defenders.

“That’s when I think I’m at my best, when I can play behind the defenders. I admit sometimes it’s my fault, but sometimes it isn’t.

“If the ball comes a bit late from the midfield, you can be offside, and also when my run isn’t good enough, but if you keep trying, and one of them comes off – it’s a goal.

“Look at the goal against Villarreal – if I wasn’t looking to get in behind the defender I would never have been able to score that goal.

“Sometimes you have to take these risks as a striker.”

  31. samuigooner, big johan and all ADE CRITICS

he may have been offside 7 times, he may have made me scream a few times in agony at him throughout the game.. but there aint no other striker i would stick in our team right now. 5 goals in 4 games people straight after coming back from injury!! his first touch and finish was excellent on the goal and Henry would even be happy with them sorts of finishes. NOT TO MENTION THE BYCYCLE KICK last week!

Torres is a good finisher, and is a lone frontman who gets alot of chances per game. He does not shake big defenders up like Ade does.

Check back to Rio and Terry’s remarks about the hardest striker in the Premiership to play against. Im rather happy he is on our team.

Shut ur cu**ing mouths is what i say to all of you

  32. Luke

    fair point.

I would also like to say, everyone who thinks Ade is still a waste and disrupts our flow etc….. Look at Michael Owen… he barely gets involved in a game, yet he plays because hes simply a goalscorer. Ade has major influences on every game he plays and scores at a very good games:goal ratio.

  33. Chris, if you can’t spot sarcasm, you should move to another blog! I have been defending Song, Arsene and others consistently for the last few years of abuse from so called fans who boo Bendtner and Eboue when they come on as subs!!

The crowd did their bit last night at last.

  34. What was interesting for me was
    - the balance of this particular line-up (except maybe the right side was a little quiet), this has something to do with Cesc lying deeper and having more freedom in movement
    - the composure of defence, and well done Sylvestre
    - the defensive strength in midfield and who else but Song

I guess AA comes in maybe for Nasri, and that probably adds to the rigt attack threat; I guess AA really, really now wants to do his ‘bit’ …

    Eboue …. oh man …

  35. Ade took his chance very well last night.

People often complain about his goals to chances ratio but he’s answering that in the best way. By scoring goals.

If he gets 20 goals this season, thats a terrific return at the highest level.

  36. To all the muppets out there read this article and get some education from Patrick Barclay. This guy is not your usual thikos you get on tv talking crap.
    Ihttp://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/arsenal/article6101780.ece

  37. ….And Ade could be one of the greats – interesting to read his comments…..of course if he was offside three times in a game from forward runs I would be delighted – and I was delightedby his goals (although if van P had taken a Myles, ie a fourth touch, before passing Ade would have been offside through no fault of his own!)

  38. Heh Chelsea have got AA and Nasri to worry about, we’ve got Malouda and Kalou!

    I like our chances.

  39. Chris hun we’re only joking….you know we love ade and the lads….i love your defence of them though talk about passion…..

On a lighter note who do you guys think has the best dance moves at the grove?

  40. QoS

It takes a lot to get banned from here. Not impossible by any means…

    YW

  41. Agreed QofS but don’t you think Theo will play…?

I hope Toure starts playing some mind games with Drogba he is his international team mate after all…

  42. ChrisGOONER @ 11:56 am – You are so right. Do the Ade critics watch the game themselves or are they obsessed by the comments of the jackasses on Setanta et al. Ade’s principal weapon is his speed and is most effective playing off the shoulder of the last defender. He is not the only actor in this drama, opposing defenders are actively seeking to play him off-side. Our midfielders have to deliver the ball with speed or else. Now that Cesc is back the delivery has got better and so are the shooting opportunities. Is it any surprise he has scored in every game since his return? is it any surprise that when Ade scores, we almost never lose the game? observers.

  43. Sorry Yogi? Have i missed something?

  44. Agree the Barclay piece is excellent – but I’m sure he wrote a negative piece about us just a couple of weeks ago – he’s as fickle as some of our supporters

  45. big johan

so criticising our frontman, who scored 5 in 4 and has been instrumental since his return from injury was sarcasm too?

Ade is how he is, he hasnt got good positional awareness – we can all see that. But his locker is full of other attributes, take him as he is, the same as we take Cesc who has a lack of pace, or RvP who has a lack of temperament, or Eboue who has a lack of composure in front of goal.

Dont use their faults to put ur players down, the are all improving, and they are doing well

  46. Alex Ice Cream

Ade has looked much better since his return from injury and he took his chance well last night. I have been a big critic of Ade this season but to criticise now the day after his goals played a huge role in us reaching the CL semi-final for only the second time ever makes no sense.

  47. Theo should be fresh Maria as he’s had quite a long time out injured and he was taken off which I presume was to save something for Chelsea.

I think some of our principle weapons over an aging Chelsea side are fitness & pace, energy levels. I’m sure Arsene will be seeking to take advantage of them!

  48. DMAN PEOPLE….NO ONE IS CRITISING ADEBAYOR HE IS OUR MAIN STRIKER WHO IS ON A HOT STREAK!!!

  49. gibbs definitely needs to bulk up quite a bit, but everything else about his game is very good.
In a couple of years I wouldn’t be surprised if he was ready to usurp clichy. He has better technical ability, and possibly even attitude imo.
He just seems to have that winning mentality and he doesnt let any mistakes phase him. In a way I hope I’m wrong tho cos clichy is one of my favourite players.

Before I thought Gibbs would only make it at this club as a left back, but now im starting to think thats a stupid assumption, cos I think he is going to have what it takes to at least challenge for a spot in midfield as well if he wants to.

Also delighted to see theo is really coming good. I was still a little skeptical of him up until quite recently, as I wasnt sure if he had found the consistency that was lacking before, but glad to say there’s no doubt about it now. Hes one of our most dangerous players. I even think hes quite well suited to the right wing cos his crossing, although inconsistent, is probably better than our other wide players.

  50. AIC

thanks for writing that… i know you are a huge critic of his. I am a huge critic of the whole team, we all want our team to go forward and to highlight the weaknesses and show where improvement can be made. No team can be perfect.

Above all the criticism, we are supporters of the team, that should come before slagging them off.

  51. Starting our fun hour….i will go for Ade i love the father christmas dance!!!

  52. I would prefer to focus on Song’s outstanding performance – he has been the subject of appalling abuse from bloggers over the last couple of years

  53. davi

I agree… i think offensively Gibbs provides alot more in terms of his delivery. You cant forget how many interceptions and forward runs Clichy makes, he does not even give scraps to the opposing players most the time. I think his confidence dropped at stages this season, and he has been having less influence in games.. I think he is strong and sensible enough to work harder and focus to come back better though. The injury may help him re-focus.

Would be nice for Gibbs to knock Cole off the England LB spot.. haha

  54. Gibbs is going to be a class act, of that i am sure.

Song was different class last night, he even outperformed Cesc.

Fair play to the lad, i for one am more than happy to admit that at the beginning of the season i questioned if he was good enough for Arsenal, now i am 100% won over.

    Bring on Saturday.

I hate to admit, i have sold my soul, and am going corporate (although it was so that a friend could have my ticket!).

I promise to be back in my seat for the second half….. ;-)

  55. big johan

I agree with you, sorry i didnt get ur sacrasm, just went on the basis of ur 1st two comments. Song has improved game by game this year. His ability on the ball is very reassuring… think we have all forgotten about the ambitious Diarra!!!

  56. How many goals have we conceded since Christmas? Hardly any…

Its no coincidence that goes in tandem with both Song and Denilson doing very solid jobs shielding our back four.

  57. QoS

Nope – just responding to your 11.53am comment.

    YW

  58. Alex Ice Cream

    chris,

I have no problem with admitting that the crictisms that I (and others) have made of Ade are no longer relevant with the way that he has come back. Even if you want to criticise Ade why do it now?

We are in the CL semi-final and have the FA Cup semi to look forward to. Why not focus on this and an exciting end to the season?

Seems very strange to bring this up now. There is no pleasing some people – and this is coming from me!

  59. Davi- Gibbs is a 19 year old if he bulk up he will be fat he still has few years of growing in him it should come naturally not pushed up. Look at theo he looks a lot stronger physically. Confidence is everything. I remenber Traore had to mark Daniel Alves in CL 2 years ago and it turned out too big occasion to handle for him and I thought he lost his chance at Arsenal after that game I hope he still has a future here anyway . Gibbs is quite the opposite he is not fazed at all

  60. Ah got ya Yogi!

To be fair, you wouldn’t ever need to ban anyone because Frank and PZ are so effective at rooting out idiots that most don’t last long!

  61. Denilson has been a revelation also. Just cant see how with everyone fit him being a starting 11 player. Song has got the passing ability, better defensive and aerial attributes that he has got, and is protecting the back 4 very well. And Fab isn’t going to be replaced by him either. I think he will get games, and i rate him as a player and i think hes a good CM. But for balance in the team, Song-Cesc may be the better combination. Denilson is light weight compared to Song.

I feel for him though, he has done well, and we aint conceded many in Cescs absence like QoS stated. But with Cesc in the team, you can see the confidence and attacking influence he has.

  62. great performance from everyone, special mention to song, walcott. fab4 in a much deeper position, a much player when in midfield and with continued improvement from song we can only get better.

  63. I am with you on that one AIC.

What’s not to be excited about – CL Semi final, a trip to Wemberlee on Saturday…

Long may the big games continue! ;-)

    Unleash the russian…

  64. Still drunk…
    :)

  65. AIC… i am not bringing it up, its little comments to demote Ade by ppl when we all know he plays a major factor in us winning football games. I think he has learnt to deal with criticism anyway… nothing can stop us and him pushing us for a hopefull a couple trophies.

Like Wenger said: Judge my team at the end of the season!

  66. ChrisG @ 12:30 pm – The amazing thing about Song is how he keeps going and going as the season grows. He must have been doing endurance work. In the absence of Denilson, last night he had to cover a lot more ground than usual. It is obvious he’s become more confident as he puts himself about the pitch with authority. I love Denilson as well but for me Song in tandem with Cesc is a much better platform for our midfield.

  67. It showed that keeping the ball is a great form of attack while all the talk of the midfield defensive shield is rather irrelevant; with five men back (full backs and one midfielder) at most times the Gunners were comfortably able to stop attacks.

The only times the defence seemed most vulnerable was when the full backs bombed forward leaving the space behind though thankfully weren’t much.

    http://arsenalcolumn.wordpress.com/2009/04/10/with-great-ability-comes-great-cautiousness/

  68. Ade is Ade, he hasn’t changed really, a little more composed at shooting I think, he lopes about with long legs, looks sluggish but isn’t, he grins after getting a chance in, he stumbles around the ball sometimes but mostly keeps it really well, he sits right on the offside line (by instruction- it pushes the defence deeper) and sometimes doesn’t notice, and then he scores and dances.

C’est tout. He is what he is. He is not going to ‘become’ something else but the unusual and gifted striker he already is. He’s a problem to defend against and tackle, legs and strength.

In which note, chelsea, hmmm … that’s a different proposition. They will much faster than VR, they will penetrate, and they (used to?) defend extremely well. And Hiddink. Analysing every weakness, every counter-move.

They’ll try to take Cesc out of the game. I am sure they will worry a lot about AA. They will sit back, hoping we commit forward in a big way, and counter. That’s the danger. Long accurate balls to Drog. Sharp crosses. Lampard will shoot from afar.

It will be a much tighter, patient, midfield struggle affair, an English cup tie kind of game. And a physical game. I hope they are dog tired. I hope they are nervous. I hope Bollocks has a mare.

  69. I agree with QoS that Chelsea have a lot more to worry about than we have. Drogba is a good striker, but not the brilliant player that is sometimes suggested.

  70. I don’t think pace is a particular virtue of Chelsea. Quite the opposite.

  71. That is the intriguing question that has been on my mind recently; who would you rather have, Torres or Drogba, or indeed throw Adebayor in the mix.

Torres showed his limitations though give him just an ounce of space and he can produce a magic shot. But mark him and give him no space to run and he can be pretty ineffective. Drogba on the other hand can create things for himself and bullies defenders no end. On his day unplayable but composure in front of goal is pretty poor.

  72. They’re nippy down the flanks, but then so are we…and then some.

  73. I notice one or two people are using Song as a stick with which to beat Denilson.

  74. Chelsea still have many dangerous players, we should not under-estimate them by any means no matter what form says. We can be confident but we must be cautious of their abilities too.

  75. Poliziano

who is beating Denilson??… we have only said Song is better suited to partner Cesc as his physical attributes and passing abilities are in my view better. Denilson is a good all round player, but Song brings something we need in the midfield – STRENGTH… coming up against Chelsea we need a lot of that.

The likes of Essien, Terry, Drogba are very strong

  76. In my opinion, gushing over one player is not worth much when it is paid for with denigration of another.

  77. Well done Arsenal and a perfect birthday present. I must admit we were not even that good. Adebayor was ok, fabregas actually had a poor game, nasri was dissapointing. I was very pleased with Gibbs, Song, eboue, and Fabianski.

But to win 3-0 and not play that well is of course satisfactory. Imagine if they all had a good game.

Right now I think united should fear us, we definetely look brighter and fresher.

  78. Flint McCullough

    Good report, YW.

Song, in my opinion, was the standout motm. A lot of humble pie to be eaten by very very many.

Cesc was a bit careless, at times, which allowed Villareal more possession, than if Denilson had played.

He is still feeling his way back to his best but there is no substitute for his creativity.

Special mention for Eboue, Gibbs & Silvester all of whom did their jobs outstandingly well.

Ade overall had a mare but scored a super goal, so why complain?

    A special night !!

  79. Song is better on current form. But this is what we want….we want competition for places.

Denilson was immense against Roma, so he’s had his days in the sun too.

What isn’t in doubt is that both have the ability and the level of performance needed to keep Arsenal firing.

By the way, did you know Song was on the bench in that semi-final at Highbury last time?

  80. Alex Ice Cream

    chris,

I didn’t mean you. I meant the critics.

I also agree that Song provides a better balance in midfield with Cesc. He is more defesively minded and also is very strong physically.

This is not a criticism of Denilson though who has been excellent this season.

  81. I believe the physical strength of Chelsea is greatly exaggerated. They just rely on strength more than some other teams. Drogba is undoubtedly a strong fellow, but I doubt Terry is stronger than any other centre back in the league.

  82. I do think Torres is the best striker in the world, he is Liverpool really.

But then I don’t get to see too much of Eto.

Speed wise at Chelsea I’m thinking Bosingwa, if he is playing, and Anelka who has slowed down a shade, Essien is no slouch either. But tis true Pz, speed is not really their game so much as position, snap shooting, individual Drog moments and lucky Lampard deflectons.

Again, as with VR I feel RvP will be the X factor. You just don’t know what he’s going to do next as he pulls players all over the show with instinctive movement. RvP and AA.

  83. I thought Alan Hansen was funny when he spoke of Lampard’s “scatter-gun.”

  84. Terry is not strong so much as border-line psycho and expert fouler. Essien is strong. Drogba shields and shoots. Ballack is my hate-figure.

  85. I have to hail Arsene Wenger.

The man has balls. Apart from being by far the most intelligent manager in football according to Gianluca Vialli, he’s also got a fat pair of Cojones. And a steel spine. Hard to not respect the man.

  86. No, I don’t think Torres is the world’s best striker, or even Spain’s best striker – David Villa being considerably better.

  87. I don’t think you should kiss and tell, Ole Gunner.

  88. Ditto Ole gunner….ditto

  89. any idea where villa is of to this summer poliz?

  90. I suppose I wouldn’t know to be honest, I rarely see Villa, but I admire Torres … he’s …. neat on the ball and lethal in space. He’s the best I see, so I rate him highly, better say than Ronaldo.

  91. Poliziano

Pointing out the attrbutes of Song to why he should be ahead of Denilson is not an attempt to try ‘denigrate’ a player. Wenger does it every game to find the best starting XI.. its the cruelty of football, someone better comes along, someone stronger, someone more equipped to that position – they could just get ahead of you for your position.

I expect Denilson to contest for his CM place yet a few seasons to come, he aint for off getting it. But Cesc has that killer pass, that confidence, and that inspiration that makes a captain.. Im afraid its who suits playing next to him right now. Song looks to be the man.

Diaby could yet prove that wrong

  92. No idea.

  93. For me song is a more complete, more mature player than denilson
I think both players will go on to be greats for us, it just might take denilson a bit longer to reach those heights
Defensively song is excellent but he has a little bit of everything to his game.
You see denilson sometimes and you think hes really got something, then others he doesnt seem to contribute much for the team. I think this is partly a confidence things, part experience and part just being physically tired from playing a lot of games.
Song is just further along the development cycle Imo

btw @LE GUNUR – sure I agree, I’m not saying gibbs really has to do too much right now, Im just saying physical strength is the only major and noticeable flaw to his game, where he can be too easily overpowered. (I’m not expecting the guy to be perfect, I mean it as a compliment that theres only one part of his game that is weak)
    Totally agree about his mentality.

  94. I like the idea that we’ve got players competing for that slot.

I also like the idea that we’ve got players like Jack Wilshire and Merida coming through who could very well be soon competing for the Fabregas slot too!

  95. Denilson is already a great player for us.

    Best DM in the Premiership.

  96. Someone is going to have to explain how no Arsenal player made the Young player of the year shortlist. Before his injury Walcott was playing as well as all those guys on the shortlist. After his injury he-s playing even more so. Denilson. Nasri. Djourou.

  97. Perhaps the bigger explanation should be how John O’Shea made it on there…

  98. O’shea isn’t on the list is he?

  99. well I think Drogba / Lampard / Essien are back close to their best at the mom.
against that, Cech is wobbly (I wouldn’t be bombing out for crosses if I’d had a fractured skull either), Cashley looks a pale imitation of the player he once was, and their defence generally looks un-Chelski like.

They are not the favourites that the media thinks they are in this game.

  100. Alex Ice Cream

    Ole,

I take the point but who cares?

Let’s hope we have two big shiney cups as our awards.

  101. over the whole season nasri is the only arsenal youngster whos done enough to get a nomination.

cant understand how rafael da silva got on the list having only played bout 10 league games. ridiculous.

I think ashley young should win it tho. Without him villa would be nowhere, and he always looks dangerous. Stephen ireland has also been good.

Another good player who didnt make it is fellaini. Hes had a great first season but probably just got too many bookings

  102. The young player of the year shortlist is a joke this year.

  103. Davi. Denilson has been the most consistent DM in the country this season and should have been at least recognised with a nomination.

  104. This isn’t going to be popular – but Nasri seems a bit lightweight, personally.
He’s not having the impact AA has had..and yet has had a whole season in which to do it.

On YouTube he looks fantastic – but.. well, okay, maybe i should go to LG for this heresy.

  105. hehe…didn’t see your post, davi…as it takes me so long to get the words in the right order….

  106. Hey QoS, looks like your ears are burning on LG. Looks like you’ve been ruffling a few feathers.

  107. Denilson is clearly the young player of the year, whether or not the awarding bodies wish to recognise the fact.

  108. He’s weighed in with some important goals Ponyboy lest we forget.

I think his energy levels are improving dramatically, he seems a much fitter player than before.

Its his first season and he’s very young still, AA is much more established and older hence the accelerated acclimitisation period to the PL.

  109. …the PFA shortlists demonstrate what a bunch of f*cking oafs most footballers in this country really are….exactly parallels the fanbase I would say…..

….talking about fanbase…..it is certainly about time that the disgraceful actions of the police during and after the Hillsborough disaster was exposed as the incompetent, self seeking, cowardly…and when it comes to the officers who sought compensation…opportunistic…behaviour it really was….

….my heart goes out to the families of the victims….

…BUT it is also about time that Liverpool as a club and its supporters stopped this cloying slightly hypocritical sentimentality …perfectly exemplified in that piece of sugary nonsense by Jerry and the Pacemakers…f*cking DannyBoy incarnate…..probably the last sound ever heard by 39 Juve supporters in May 1985…

…utterly horrible…with a slightly sinister whiff of marketing about it all….

…still the press, media and marketing boys must have their stories….and we the supporters are always happy to shed a sentimental tear to show what real human beings we truly are…

  110. davi,

Ashley Young is not a young player. He’s almost 24! Even Stephen ireland is borderline.

I think Denilson, Nasri and Djourou are better candidates for the actual young players and have played better this season, much better than Lennon, Evans, Da Silva….Agbonlahor maybe is the only one nominee that’s actual good value for the nomination.

  111. i’d jst like to say that this is a quality blog. i’v read le grove today but the comments generated from todays post are very engrossing & so rich in detail that its definately worth reading through all of them. well done yogi & fellow posters – keep up the good work! :)

  112. QoS, yes I thought denil was great for the first half of the season. Think hes dropped off a bit now, I really think the number of games hes played has affected his form a bit of late, although he looked a lot more fresh when he came on last night.
Maybe he deserves a nomination. Certainly has more claim to one than rafael da silva.

I mainly think nasri deserves to be on the list cos of his goals, but his all round play is excellent, although inconsistent

  113. Nasri is not lightweight, and he makes his fair share of tackles. That is an aspect of his game that has surprised me, although he is small.. he is a good fighter. Against Villareal he done an excellent job protecting Gibbs.

  114. Alex Ice Cream

I agree with Frank – on all counts.

No this is not a misprint.

  115. wow ole gunner ur totally right.
I thought young was about 21-22.

they do this sometimes – giving these young player awards to players who arent exactly young. bloody stupid.

  116. The PFA awards really screwed up this yr is all i can say… Giggs for a sentimental vote – What a joke!!!

  117. Alex Ice Cream

    Pony,

You cannot compare Nasri 21 with AA who is 27. The difference in experience is huge so I think it is an unfair comparison.

  118. davi

maybe our version of young is younger than evryone elses!! after all we are Arsenal

  119. Did you hear that Bendtner was asked who the most skillful in the squad was, and his answer was “Nasri”.

  120. Nasri has had a decent 1st season… he came in the team with a bang at the start, its unfair to expect him to do that throughout his whole 1st season in a new league. For a young new signing, hes done well.

Arshavin now is havin the same impact Nasri did… its what new signings do for a team. Hopefully no more are made though and we keep eevry1!!! Not another summer of change pls Mr Wenger!

  121. Hehe, true
I duno, I think they should make it for under 21s.
Surely it makes more sense that way.

But by these sorts of rules, surely fabregas should be on the list then this year!? even if he has had a big injury. Clichy too!

  122. AIC

I agree… Nasri is at the beginning of his career, where Arshavin is probably at the height of it. Think theres alot to come from both players at Arsenal.

  123. And bendtner should be on the list! hes the obvious one i couldnt think of. (thanks muppet)
Hes had his ups and downs but still got a fair number of goals

  124. the young player award is kinda crap

it should be really the ‘new player award’.. Walcott is the best young English player, every Arsenal and non Arsenal fan can see it yet a new form player of the year is voted in because he hasnt been there b4.. I dont think no measure of actual performance is made in these awards. Its a shame really.

A new form of player awards should be made each season.. based on stats and performance ratings.

  125. davi…

i think its unbeleivable how we can be sitting in top 4 with all these youngsters yet none of them are in contention for the award

  126. Saturday>

I’m completely bullish on the clash with Chelsea. Simply put I think we have everything on our side. Current form. History, their recent defensive collapse, and a fresh and rested Arshavin.

  127. …Nasri is a fantastic footballer…..he has not learned to dominate games yet….but what better example than AA to have in the squad to teach him how to do that…if only by example….not exactly the same style of play but near enough and they control similar areas of the pitch….great for us to have the privilege of watching the one perform and the other develop…and perform…this is happening all over the pitch at Arsenal….very, very exciting…

  128. “I notice one or two people are using Song as a stick with which to beat Denilson.”

Couldn’t agree more Poliziano. Some people have very short memories, players only have to be out for one game for them to be forgotten. Weren’t there some people suggesting we didn’t need Cesc any longer because he was out injured and we found another way to play? The beauty of a squad as talented as ours is that Arsene can play the right player for the right game.

Song has some more obvious qualities, which seem to appeal to the English mentality, but Denilson can be equally effective in that position, but in a different way. One is not necessarily better than the other. My own opinion as to why Song was selected yesterday is due to his experience of playing centre back and that he is good in the air, which was a more important requirement given the make shift nature of our defence.

In other circumstances alongside a fully fit and functioning Fabregas Denilson or Diaby could also be effective partners for the former.

  129. Frank

I agree it is a joy at watching these youngsters grow to the occasions and the big matches.. Lets not get too bullish though as we have 8 possible games against TOP 3 TEAMS.. yes 8 games.

MAN UTD – 4 Times if we reach FA Cup Final
    Liverpool – League Match
Chelski – League, FA Cup, and possibly CHamps League!

  130. the PFA awards committee must be Man U fans:)
it’d be hilarious if Gerrard wins!

i agree with an earlier post – ashley young has been immense for villa. but i wonder if is he better than walcott? & is he gonna move to the other top3 clubs in the summer?

also ade is a major asset to us & i believe he is still growing & improving as a player. but for me torres is the best striker in the premiership. i havent seen villa, luis fabiano, eto, edin dzenko play week in, week out so i wonder wot sort of players they are?

wot time is the chelsea game on sat? thats goin to be a tough game. Komrade Hiddink is 1 of the top class players in the world. i put him & wenger at the same level, i rate him that highly. he really inspires his troops.

the bonus is that arshavin will be playing too —woooohooo. i totally admire arshavin cos he’s a player who can change a match in an instant & is simply world class:)

  131. Yep ~ fair points one and all.. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how young Nasri is; and what a player.
H just seems a bit invisible at times…but have been answered fairly.

Frank ~ Absolutely.. those bindippers remember Hillsborough well enough, but not what they did to Juve, except a “sorry”. Their sentimentality sticks in my throat. It’s lose/lose, really. Ugh – an ugliness – just caught a glimpse of the Mirror on my way to buy booze and porn.. disgusting!

  132. Has Denilson’s form dropped recently?
I don’t know. The game against ManCity at home, Denilson was my MOTM and many others’ choice as well. Then the next game against Wigan, he had a poor game, BUT everybody else was poor as well in the first half. Many people gushed over Song’s performance in that game; however, I think he had as poor game as Denilson but had the chance to redeem himself in the second half.
Obviously AW knows far better than me, so I don’t have problem with his team selection.
However, Poliziano sums up my feeling about Denilson/Song perfectly @ 12:51 pm:

“In my opinion, gushing over one player is not worth much when it is paid for with denigration of another”

    I feel for Denilson..

  133. ….naaah….lets get bullish…Mancs, Chelski, Scousers…f*ck em thats what I say….

  134. Oh Yogi.. surely not in moderation for that!!
pornography ? was meant to be He, not an 80′s term for smack… oh well…

  135. Song has improved immensly but someone’s comment that Cesc had a poor game in comparision to Song has gone over the line. It seems expectations rules over fact. Both had good games but every good performance magnifies Song’s actual performance while so much is expected of Cesc.

Denilson comes up with many intercepts but a hard tackle is more appealing on the eye to many.

  136. Yep ~ fair points one and all.. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how young Nasri is; and what a player.
He just seems a bit invisible at times…but have been answered fairly.

Frank ~ Absolutely.. those bindippers remember Hillsborough well enough, but not what they did to Juve, except a “sorry”. Their sentimentality sticks in my throat. It’s lose/lose, really. Ugh – an ugliness – just caught a glimpse of the Mirror on my way to buy booze.. disgusting!

  137. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

The Hillsborough disaster was made even worse for the families of the victims as the police have never been charged with unlawful killing. The police also changed evidence while other evidence such as CCTV footage not-so mysteriously disapperared.

The police were also awarded large sums of compensation for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for an event that they were to blame for yet the relatives of the victims could not claim for PTSD as they were not there!

  138. player of the year award is a joke. The most important part of the season is totally ignored. I would have said the same if an arsenal player were the favourite.

My first choice Xl would be if all players were available :

    Almunia

    sagna toure gallas clichy

    walcott fabregas song arshavin

    adebayor van persie

  139. Alex Ice Cream

    Pony,

Just to clarify it is “The Mirror” that you caught a glimpse of not “a mirror”.

  140. ….naaah….lets get bullish…Mancs, Chelski, Scousers…f*ck em thats what I say….

Damn right Frank. There’s no way we’ll beat these teams by being humble and afraid. We should be aiming to scare the sh*t out of them.

8 possible games against top teams you say… bring it on, no pressure. It’s the teams that we play in those 8 games that should be afraid, not us!

  141. Cruel, AIC.

  142. Ponyboy — nasri needs to be given a chance to play in the middle. i think when RvP/fab are gettin tired in the 75th minute or so, we shud throw him on because i feel he is wasted on the wing.

  143. Absolutely right Frank.

A few weeks ago you could see the nervousness that was around in the side because of the inexperience. They fought through that showing tremendous spirit in the process. Add the learning of that past few months to the high skill levels that they already had and the courage that they have been shown to possess in abundance and you have one hell of a squad.

AA has brought maturity and an eagerness to excel at this level. Even Silvestre who is not many people’s favourite has brought determination and a great attitude.

How many games ago was it that many wanted Eboue’s head on a stick?

Wenger and Arsenal. Does anybody know of a squad and a manager that they would swap for those we have?

  144. AIC – i always look in the mirror, bro – just to check whether my leprosy has worsened overnight… you pedant you.

  145. You can get it delivered, or so I hear anyway, in a plain brown cover, Pb. That would save you the trouble of going out in the daytime.

    TC. Where you been girl?

  146. Nasri has scored more goals than Ashley Young this season, despite playing only two-thirds the number of games. Young is in his fourth season in the Premier League. Nasri, of course, is in his first.

  147. Denilson is ‘suffering’ due to Fabregas return, i.e. he is being forced to play a little deeper and perhaps more conservatively than he had been previously.

    YW

  148. …I know, AIC…wonderful institution the British Police Force….the clue is in the word Force….supposed to be a service but they think of themselves as a force….Robert Peel had protection of the citizenry in mind when he set it up…look at the nine rules of policing…..now they sit in their fortresses in their bullet proof underpants…venturing out into the urban jungle in their neenahs armed to the teeth with f*cking guns, tasers, truncheons, handcuffs….oh and bright yellow jackets so that they don’ t get run over by their own squad cars….prowling around look for…wait for it….teenagers…saw two hobby bobbies the other day…’booking’ a dastardly gang of pavement cyclists consisting of a middle aged woman, an 11 year old boy and a tramp….ffs

  149. The reason our players are not shortlisted for Young Player of the Year is that they’re so good. Everyone assumes they are mature players.

  150. True Consols..but still wish Porto hadn’t rolled over ~
Nice that people are realising that Silvestre is a decent player. Hope he really shows ManUre why they were stupid to let him go.

KM: Good point. That’s from where he does the ‘damage’.

  151. Frank, slightly disagree with you over Nasri, I think he has learnt to dominate games, look at the away game against Roma. When he moved into the middle for the second half he picked that game up by the scruff of the neck and shook the life out of it… man of the match by a country mile; he also did the same at Newcastle scoring a beautiful goal which I am sure you remember. What is more accurate to say in my opinion is that his talents do not shine as much on the left wing, which is where is asked to play, as needs must.

  152. As ever Cbob – you speak from experience..and i bow my leprous head to your superior knowledge.

    This is getting silly! :-)

  153. A player isn’t put in the position best for himself; he’s put in the position best for the team.

  154. strange but true. yogi ur right. denilson plays better with diaby than he does with fab. i think its because diaby is a more physical presence in midfield than fab is. but again i think this might be our 2nd choice pairing for midfield. diaby&Den while song has more or less made himself Fab’s partner in midfield.

  155. Chris, sorry for late response – totally agree, its unbelievable really we have such a young side and yet we’re 4th in the league, and its clear to everyone, if we keep all our players, wel be challenging strongly next season
All the youngsters who take criticism will in time become really top players.

I never wanted to admit that arsene knows, but he does. He knows how good he can make a player.
The only issue i have with him is he puts player development before us winning things, and he doesnt seem to take into account the time it takes for the players to get to a good enough level. To be honest it doesn’t bother me as much as others. If he can make it work with this current squad, they can be his best ever. Signing nasri last summer was the icing on the cake in my view – and we still have carlos vela to come. Im still convinced he is “the one”. The pace of him and walcott will make us unbelievable pretty soon

  156. …I think that Diaby is on the verge of blossoming…nope…erupting into one of the most exciting midfield players of his time…

  157. Agree davi ~ who would have thought that many, if not most of us would have reckoned Song as a top player, even three months ago; or Manu Eboue to come on to cheers and play so well ??

Apart from AW/ Pat Rice.. few would have ever believed it!

ACLF – the only blog to have kept the faith!

  158. We have exciting times ahead

  159. …we do indeed, London…

  160. davi i think vela’s a gr8 talent but i think he needs to bulk up a bit and he needs to adjust to play in the epl. but agree u in 2yrs time a strikeforce of walcott & vela wud b amazing.

  161. PZ –
Ideally they should match, though, surely ?

Yet another hero (yep…getting into stride!), was Lucas! The confidence.. the distribution..the sweeping.. Big Al…be scared!

  162. In my mind song and deni are of equal importance.. song has all the attributes include strength in tackles and intelligent passing. Denni is the same however he is deceptively strong. he can rough players up just like song… Eboue and Walcott are now coming into their own. My friends in all postions we have an embarassingment of riches.. yes even in defence… (have you seen our reserves)
The FA cup is ours… and we will revenge our loss against barca the CL will be ours too. We can then tell those so called uneducated sports pundits on sky, setanta, bbc, Itv, and talk (crap) Radio to eff off – so sayeth the TROOF :)

  163. I wonder if the visit count on ACLF is abnormally high today?

It seems that we are the topic of conversation on another blog today.

Oh and that Yogi doesn’t have a hair on his arse whatever that means.

  164. whats this our second cl semi-final…

So a team containing shi**ers like Denilson,Song,Eboue & Bendtner have reached the semi-finals of the cl the same amount of times as our great sides. hhhmm..

  165. We are a team set to dominate for years to come.

I hope Mr Wenger plans to enjoy it beyond 2011 and not leave it for someone else to get the glory as his masterplan comes to fruition.

  166. Why so, Ponyboy?

  167. Alex Ice Cream

    Pony,

Hahaha. I am glad that you can take a joke.

  168. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

That’s when the police are not beating up women with truncheons and beating protesters so that they die.

How noble of the policeman who beat the protester to come forward. I assume that this had nothing to do with the fact that he was caught on camera. The policeman in question could also be facing an assault charge as opposed to the more appropriate charge of manslaughter.

We can expect no less though from these thugs just ask the de Menezes family. Their son was unlawfully killed but noone was to blame and at worse it was a breach of health and safety regulations.

    Good old British injustice.

  169. ….I agree with AIC….

  170. “Oh and that Yogi doesn’t have a hair on his arse whatever that means”.

Not that we’d know since Yogi is not in the habit of showing us, but we certainly know he hasn’t got sh*t for brains!

  171. Interested in what you say about Diaby Frank …

I often wonder … AW ‘sees’ players in training, in changing rooms, behind the scenes, psychology too … AW has been persistent with Diaby, clearly marks him as a future ‘great’ … his injuries have got in the way … every now and then we’ve seen what maybe AW sees (eg Diaby v. Roma) – an extraordinary, explosive talent.

Nasri is fine, going through the slightest of quiet periods, it won’t last, he’s just too good … oh ye of little faith …

The Denilson v Song debate is a little weird, I mean who expects them to be ‘the same’ or have identical qualities … I will always remember their combined heroics this season when all had written us off, the 0-0 period, players injured …

  172. That said the Cesc Song combination is very exciting

  173. It’s plain not fair to say Yogi is bare-arsed …

  174. It does raise the question as to how that piece of knowledge has been arrived at?

  175. How far is Eduardo away from fitness?

  176. The cheeks of wrath

  177. Eddie was on the bench last night wasn’t he?

  178. I wondered at what point we bring our secret stealth weapon out …. dudu …

  179. I have been flying the ACLF flag on LeGrove all day QoS.

In my humble opinion, Nasri has had a very good season so far.

It is easy to forget that he is still a kid, missed most of last season with meningitis, and has to adapt to a new league and a new team.

Do you remember the impact Pires made in his first six months when he arrived?

It took the great man a while to adapt, and look how good he became.

I think Nasri has done exceptionally well considering it is his first season, and the best thing is, he is only going to get better.

  180. I wondered if Bendy and Edu might get a run v ‘Pool so a few others can catch their breath before the next round of big games … with Vela, AA, Den and Diaby it would be a strong team

  181. KM – I dont think vela really needs to bulk up too much, hes bloody strong, I remember a game in the champs league, I think against kiev, i think he injured gallas, and kiev’s massive african CB, cant remember his name. He was putting himself about a bit too much in that game at times perhaps
hes extremely powerful but he does need to work on a few things, mainly decision making, but yeh, he has the composure, skill and pace to be a real player.

  182. Alex Ice Cream

    Matt,

I totally agree. There are not many 21 year old playmakers in world football, Cesc being the obvious exception. Nasri has done well this season and scored some important goals.

Pires was 27 when he joined – much older and more experienced. Nasri has years before he peaks.

  183. Exactly AIC, and who better to learn from than the Russian Maestro himself. :-)

And a certain Little Mozart – if he ever comes back unbroken.

  184. Now the media are writing articles wondering how anyone could ever have doubted Wenger. YES YOU MORONS, HOW COULD YOU IDJITS HAVE DOUBTED WENGER???!!!

Myles Palmer from next season will start writing the Chelsea News Review. And ooh how I’d love for them to be afflicted with him.

  185. I saw your work Matt.

I figured you were trying to irritate them enough to get banned!

At the end of the day, i bear them no ill-will. I’ve not bad mouthed any of them (well maybe I mocked Geoffs “debate” with me a bit) but there are plenty of nice people supportive of Arsenal on there.

One or two are clearly highly immature but you get that everywhere. I’m not sure whats argumentative about asking somebody to justify their editorial stance that Denilson isn’t good enough but hey ho.

I just choose not to blog there anymore. And have no plans to speak of them again.

I only read today’s out of curiosity because I figured I’d get some name calling which I have, but that’s what swimming against the tide generates. Sorry that I inadvertently have provoked them into having a go at ACLF and Yogi, that seems unfair, Yogi as far as I know has done nothing to them.

Tribalism is alive and well, it would seem.

  186. It’s funny listening to pundits who have ignored Arsenal, barely know the team suddenly trying to sound faintly knowledgeable … they spew forth righteously … what has become of bragging rights, his time beckons?

  187. LOL – no, not trying to irritate them to get banned.

I agree, there are some good people over there, with whom you can have a good conversation with, and i enjoy some of the banter.

Certain others can be a little sensitive when not agreed with, but that’s all part of the fun.

And heaven forbid disagreeing with The Oracle himself.

I find the whole ‘them and us’ thing slightly amusing if i am being honest.

Oh, and don’t worry Yogi – i am a defender of the faith over there. lol.

  188. QoS & Matt,

I really don’t understand why you bother with the LG crowd. They’re not honest actors. They care more about their blog than about our club and players. And they’re not much good as supporters.

They actually attack you for being positive about the team we all support. How twisted is that?

  189. I visited LG today too … saw Matt’s irritated contributions too … it was downright glowing with positive affection compared to the last time I visited when it snarled with petty racism and talked about Eboue’s ‘monkey dance’ – bastards

Why do I go there? Must be mad? ACLF is class.

  190. ole – i shall not be bothering any more.

I wish them well. C’est tout.

  191. Ole – maybe i am a Blog sadist. :-)

  192. I wasn’t aware i was irritated until being told Zimpaul. ;-)

In fact, i have had a very big grin on my face all day, and am very much looking forward to going to Wembley on Saturday.

  193. I see on the website that Gibbsand Saggy are now both doubts for Saturday….

Jeez, when are we going to get a break on the injury front….

  194. Take your boots would be the advice to anyone going.

  195. Go on, QoS, bad mouth them.

  196. You’ll like it if you try it.

  197. It’s not the end of the day yet…

  198. ….must….resist….temptation….

I’ll leave the lack of dignity and name calling to others, I think.

Oooh look what I did. Was that passive aggressive?

  199. We’re certainly having to do things the hard way having just seen the latest injury news on Arsenal.com!

  200. LOL – take my boots?

As much as i would love too, I just about manage to get around a 5 a side pitch these days – not sure you guys would want me at left back just yet. ;-)

And i am not sure Premier league ref’s would tolerate my way of stopping quick youngster’s.

  201. It is our way Passenal, to overcome adversity.

    We are the Arsenal.

  202. Silvestre at left back?

But that means the best DM in Europe would have to drop back to centre half, and then we might have to play Denilson…

    We are doomed….

  203. Thank goodness we’ve only got Chelsea!

  204. Are there any more left backs at the club?

I’d like Silvestre to stay in the middle, he did well there and its a nice combo with Kolo i think.

  205. Alex Ice Cream

    Passenal,

The injury news is not all bad though with Djourou and Almunia back in a fortnight and Clichy a little longer. I was worried that Johan was out for the season. Hopefully most will be back for the CL 1st leg and certainly for the 2nd.

Doesn’t it sound great to be talking about CL semi finals.

  206. It refers to Gibbs as having a slight groin problem, so hopefully he will be OK.

It would be a shame to move Silvestre out of the middle as i agree that he had a good game.

And Song was class in the middle, so wouldnt wantto move him back either.

  207. I’d like Almunia to play in goal, Clichy at left back, Sagna at right back, and Gallas and Toure in the middle.

  208. Enjoy your evening all – i’m off to do some work before 5 a side tonight. :-)

  209. Somewhat disconcerted by the discussion of my Arse earlier. Tempting though it may be, I shall refrain from posting a vivid description until another day…

    YW

  210. When you’ve seen one arse, you’ve seen them all.

  211. is almunia fit to play this saturday?

  212. Doesn’t need to be vivid Yogi – we just need to know if the rumours are true. Not a hair on it?

  213. OK everybody I am banning injuries to Arsenal players for the rest of this season.

    No excuses.

  214. *By need to know, i actually mean, are midly amused that someone would use this to insult you!

  215. Was it an insult?

  216. Be honest now, who doesn’t prefer a well-plucked arse?

  217. ….what is all this f*cking plucking arse stuff?….

  218. Poliziano

Some are just more ‘peachy’ than others…

    YW

  219. Just discussing YW’s hirsute haunches.

  220. QoS

I refer the honourable lady to my previous answer.

    YW

  221. Amy Lawrence absolutely raving about Song on Football Weekly.

  222. …well I googled hair and arse….and I have to say the results have made me feel quite faint….shocking….

  223. “Was it an insult?”

Perhaps it was meant in the sense of a callow youth or as soft as a baby’s nether regions?

  224. You need to change your SafeSearch settings.

Strange, I thought they were set to moderate by default.

  225. ….oh no I wouldn’t want to cut out any…er…I mean…well…of course it is set to the default setting of ‘moderate’ …absolutely…’moderate’….no question…………what the f*ck is an arse demon?

  226. …amazing…..in Australia….’Hair like a bush pig’s arse’ means unmanageable hair….head hair I would imagine….

….and it seems that one fellow has a real problem with hair and in trying to resolve it he has sustained a terrible injury….

  227. Debates like this may bring Arse21 back…please refrain..
    ===

I think Song has been amazing in the last 3 games, his confidence is building up. His balance between defense & attack is great. Keep it moving Song…We love you.
    ===

The one I’m really happy for is Theo, he’s coming out of his boy skin and becoming a man. Keep the goals coming Theo…We love you too.
    ===

I still love the Wenger-Dance, and I would like to see the full version while Cesc holds the CL Cup in the final.
    ===

    And, finally:

What do you think of Ade now AIC?

Is it 6 offside in one game or 4 goals in 5?

  228. No G4E, AIC likes Ade now. It was before that he didn’t like him. Now it is different.

  229. …so you don’t want to know about this bloke and his girlfriend who decided to plait….no…perhaps not….it has been a real revelation though…and you guys say this came from another blogsite….what a wonderful world we live in….

  230. Great result yesterday .Good all round performance from everyone and to think this team can still get better .

  231. …take an algorithm..call it ‘natural selection’ … it simply rolls on…no-one knows when or where it started or when or where it will end…maybe never…it is infinite….it gave rise to all the particles and waveforms in the universe/s…all the energy, the matter ….and it gave rise to life…simple at first but with increasing complexity…..and some of that life is so complex that it sits around on weekday afternoons analysing arse hair….what a waste…

  232. Oh I see CBob…so like him when he’s scoring, but hate him when he’s having some trouble….NICE.

How are ya Frank? How is the stall? Do you have hair-care products? :)

  233. Yogi,

just wanted to say – MY BAD on the team selection – you were spot on.

Our team played brilliant, and frankly never let Villareal relax – compare how e played with a 1 goal lead to how Chelsea played with a 3 goal lead – that’s the difference in the teams.

  234. Hello, all

Great blog YW and great comments – I agree with so many people that I couldn’t name-check you all without sounding like Kate Winslet at the Oscars.

  235. …I am fine, G4E…well I did stock haircare products…you know…for quif maintenance…but I have found today that this sort of stuff can be abused if it gets into the wrong hands….so I am on the fence on this one….I would not like to think that I am being used unwittingly as a middle man in a network of vice and perversion….wittingly yes thats fine…but unwittingly no chance….on the other hand there could be a market here….

  236. “…..and some of that life is so complex that it sits around on weekday afternoons analysing arse hair….what a waste…”

    lol
But you see, Frank, the thing about natural selection is that it’s only about survival, not quality. Hence the arse hair analysts.

  237. I have confidence in you Frank, You know your stuff mate. :) Sell it wisely.

  238. Denilson is a good player, just. He hasn’t got the X factor that can change games. With him playing, we lost our flair. We had a big hole in front of the defence because of his penchant to move forward even though his shooting is below average.

Denilson has a future with the club but he has a lot to learn to become a DM or box-to-box CM.

I’ve always said that the best pair for now is Song/Cesc but was derided and called names here. Cesc/Denilson has never worked and won’t work.

Recent performances by Song have pushed Denilson to the bench where he belongs but for injuries. He’s not ready to play week-in-week out.

AW will play Song/Cesc from now on and will bring in Diaby in a 4-5-1 formation. Denilson will only come on when any of these are not available.

  239. ….I must say the sales technique is going to be a bit difficult….

..’got any of those hair products, mate?’

….’you mean the ones for quif maintenance?’

…’quifs?…..er yeah those are the ones’.

    ….’but you are bald’

    …’er..its for a mate’

..now I have to remember to look this bloke in the eye at all times and on no account…at no time…must my eyes drift down to his groin….and at no point must I say..

….’what the f*ck is wrong with you, you perve…pull yourself together, man…no I did not mean pull….uuurrgghh stop that…’

  240. …f*ck off, Howard…

  241. F*ck Off Howard…

  242. Howard is a human, just.

  243. Wasn’t Song one of the foreign craps?

I think he was. Howard is therefore a liar as well as a fool.

  244. So why isn’t the “F*ck off” getting through to him? If it was a robot, it would understand by now.

  245. Howard is a Spurs fan. He’ll soon reveal himself to be Big Face.

  246. Howard has changed his view G4E. He used to slag off Song and Eboue as well as Denilson. It is interesting to see the change that is coming aver most, if not all, Wenger nay sayers in the past couple of weeks.

    Pz, is right. As usual.

(I typed that as ‘tight’ initially, but that was of course a slip, I was obviously thinking of someone else. he’ll know who I mean)

  247. I still think he is a Spud fan, who dreams to be an Arsenal fan but can’t make the switch because Spud blood runs through his veins…

I bet he dreams of his mediocre English Spud players all wearing the red shirt and playing CL football and stuff…

  248. He’d switch if he could
    But he can’t; he’s a spud.
The blight’s in his blood –
    It’s the colour of mud.

  249. Did you see the team that’ appy ‘arry put out against our 17 year olds the other night, G4E? Bentley the Flying Spur played! Imagine, leaving Arsenal and ending up playing for Sp*Rs stiffs in front of 20 people at the Orient against our junior side.

Still with him, Huddlestone, Bale, Chimboda and a few more tens of Millions of Pounds worth of ‘talent’, they beat our kids 2-1. Of course we had a few injuries.

  250. …..Here comes Howard the con man…
    …coming as a Spud fan..
We gonna chase the Spudhead out of town..
    ……Chase THose Spud Sh*ts out the town…

    Them Crazy…..Spud Crazys….Sh*thead Clowns

  251. I know Huddlestone’s fat – but tens of millions of pounds? Surely not.

  252. I’m humming Lip up Fatty Huddlestone to myself. Quite a catchy tune.

  253. It’s a big arse, Pz.

  254. Arsene hardly make mistakes on players CBob…he knew Bentley the flying c*nt is a nothing without his coaching, but he will be hyped to no end….so the smart man off-loads him to BBurn for a few millions, then gets more millions when he moved to the Spuds reserve where he belong….

The idiot didn’t realize that when he left Wenger, he left high school…he never graduated and never will make it to college….

  255. As big an arse as Howard?

  256. We are beating Chelsea, Pool and Manu as far as Denilson don’t play.

Why does Brazil prefer Anderson and even Lucas to Denilson? He has no X factor.

I’m happy Gibbs is coming through, the more English players we have, the better our chances of winning something.

  257. …Denilson played in all of the games against Chelski, Mancs and the Scousers…..we won the first two and drew the last….just f*ck right off Howard….

  258. I was talking with a Honduran Arsenal fan the other day. He told me that the more Honduran players AW brings through the ranks, the better our chances of winning something.

  259. howard whts your name simon bloody cowell buger orff with ya x factor.

  260. Test your IQ

    .. X factor…more English…winning….What comesnext?

  261. Alex Ice Cream

    G4E,

My problems with Ade were ones of attitude but since his return he looks much more focused.I always said that if Ade came back with a better attitude I would have no problem with him.

Even AW said that the Ade saga about whether he was staying or going negatively affected the team. Ade just looked disinterested for long periods of the season – West Ham when he came on and changed the game and Hull away were notable exceptions.

Yes he was caught offside too much but I am just enjoying the victory and not focusing on any negatives. Ade can improve his offside play.

  262. Test your IQ

    X factor…more English…winning something…what comes next?

  263. AIC,

how did you know ade had an attitude problem in the first place?????

  264. It’s nice to see my 12th favourite Premier League team doing so well.

You should have the measure of Man Utd over 2 legs. I do worry for you if you have to face Barcelona though. Hopefully Chelsea will see to them.

Does Villa’s capitulation mean you can field weakened teams in the league now to concentrate on the cups?

  265. Exactly AIC, I think the same too…The problem with Ade is the “Attitude of some fans towards him”.

What do you want from him? 30 goals last season and worked his ass off, still the leading goal scorer for the club this season without playing all games and also while missing the number 1 chance creator Cesc.

What on earth do they want? Some fans need to look in the more and see what’s written on their forehead before they start mouthing off to players.

  266. During the match yesterday (I think), Howard made a comment, and was completely ignored. I’d like to see more of that, despite the justice of telling him to **** ***.

  267. I think some of your supporters have been spoilt to the point where they won’t be happy unless there are 10 Pele’s on the pitch.

That will not win games. For every Bergkamp, Cesc or Arshavin. You need a Kanu, Ade or Denilson who may be less flashy but get the job done.

Denilson is an excellent player for his age and will only get better in the next few years. Getting rid would be a major error. Howard doesn’t know D*** about S***.

  268. For the streamers among you:
I thought the stream on veetle yesterday was good. It seems to be at a higher bit rate than the others. It might be worth installing the plug in before the next match.

  269. I agree with you there, Ruis.

  270. Shhh! That’s been the best way to watch games online all season. Cat’s out of the bag now!

  271. Oh, Big Al! Where’s your community spirit?

  272. You’re quite right, PZ.

It’s absolute torture when a stream collapses. I think I just want to avoid that feeling as much as possible. I get so irrational during games that I sometimes think that an extra few people watching might bring it down.

  273. Kanu was very flashy. Outrageously skillful.

  274. Apologies then, it didn’t seem that way from my casual viewpoint.

  275. Yep, he was anything but a workhorse.

  276. Talking of flash, Walcott should have that Right Wing spot nailed down by the time the World Cup comes along. I’d go as far as to say he’s key to us winning the thing. You’d better keep that cotton wool to hand Y’all.

Can Gibbs follow his lead in a couple of years? I’ve seen very little of him. Does his long term future lie at CB?

  277. Did anyone see David Bentley play the reserves during the week? This guy left because he wanted to play. Last season he was talking about how Walcott had to consider his Arsenal career if he wanted games. Then he left Blackburn because he wanted Wednesday night games (CL). Now all he plays is monday night reserve games. What a fool!

Congrats Bentley! You just became the story to scare kids with. Better knuckle down and work hard or you’ll end up like David Bentley!

  278. It’s always interesting to observe change. Its funny how peoples views are changing as we’re flying high. Would be extremely interesting when we win the CL or the FA cup or both. Who are they going to slate then? Or will it be the gradual admission of Denilson as being absolutely brilliant(as Song has been declared recently). Because frankly its not amongst arsenal fans to come out and admit that they were wrong about alot of the players.

EBOUE FOR RIGHT BACK!!!! He was f**** brilliant defensively and say what you wanna say…..but he was better offensively than Sagna. He’s really going to challenge theo for that spot, when we’re against physically challenging teams.

  279. I might think Song is better on current form, but Denilson balied us out big time this season.

Howard and his ilk are insane for not recognising this. Really.

I don’t care about any arguments. We were missing our midfield general, and Denilson held the forte and has been the player who’s been consistent throughout our recovery.

  280. Totally aggree with you Ole. Where would we be without Denilson this season? Certainly not where we are today. Lost Cesc, Diaby’s injuries, and Songs lack of creativity. We would have been left with Ramsey in the middle.

  281. OneofUs,

“I get so irrational during games that I sometimes think that an extra few people watching might bring it down.”

Hahaha. I still think that’s the reason the stream goes down. What else could be the reason? Those underserving arsenal fans logging into the stream channels. I curse them all the time. I see no other reason why the stream would go down. Its those dooomers I tell yah……its them. They’re the “extra few people”, spoiling games for people like us.

  282. Sagna is good in attack, but in a very different way from Eboue. Eboue’s bursts into the penalty area are inimitable, and it’s a shame that more goals don’t come from them. I think our own players, like the opposition, struggle to keep up with him and with what he is planning.

  283. Mad Manu doesn’t even know what he’s planning… that’s why he’s so dangerous PZ..

  284. Due to our injury crisis in Defence, I will prefer to slot Sagna as left back and Eboue as Right Back for the FA Cup semis against Chelsea. Gibbs is having a minor groin injury and Sagna has played as emergency Centre Back and Left Back before when he was still playing in France. Toure and Silvestre as Centre Back.

Daiby and Song need to play in midfield instead of Denilson because we need physical and tall players to counter against Chelsea’s Terry, Alex, Ballack, Drogba and Ivanovic. I don’t want what happened to Liverpool in the Champions League to happen to Arsenal.

Song can become our emergency centre back if anyone in defence becomes injured …. (touchwood but at the rate of losing more than 1 injured defensive player per game for the past 3 games, we have to be mentally prepare for this.)

  285. Have to admit – Rednose has good one-liners:
    Re: Madrid/ Ronaldo :
    “I wouldn”t even sell them a virus”.

It’s scary, but am beginning to quite like the old bugger..

  286. That was a good read from the Times about English Success in Europe in recent years. Thanks for the link Ole Gunner.

  287. You’re going mad, Ponyboy. First, you attack Samir Nasri. Now…THIS!

  288. If you’ve been drinking, stop! If you haven’t been drinking, start!

  289. Alex Ice Cream

    Ponyboy,

I will put that to a bout of temporary insanity.

  290. POLICE PROBE SUPERMAN SIGHTING

Police are investigating after residents in North London claimed to see a Superman-like figure flying through the sky.

Almost 20 residents, from Islington, claim the UFO was wearing a shiny red, just like Superman’s.

Police officers took written statements from all of the witnesses and say they described the figure in the same way.

Local policeman Rob Shepherd said: “We talked to people of different ages who are all reliable citizens in the community.

“They all said they saw this strange creature who flew over their houses in his shiny red costume. We’ll just have to see what happens next.”

Resident Flint Gooner, 41, said: “He looked like Superman and was flying slowly at about 100 yards from the ground in a standing position. He didn’t make any smoke or sound. Just cruising around. He said something in french”

  291. Ouch!!

Am just not playing the game tonight… but, – Sammy; stupid.. ( Typical LG sh1te)
    Rednose…still a classic line.

And now i shall seek oblivion and come back young and with a peachy bottom. Dream on girls!

  292. Nice one Muppet btw! :-)

  293. I’m just teasing you. You’re a peach!

  294. Ole Gunner

I’ve not discounted the fact that Denilson is a good player. I’ve said repeatedly that Denilson is not ready yet and shouldn’t be playing week-in-week out because he’s not good enough.

His passes are not good; 2/3 yards passes sideways or backwards

    Has no physical presence

    Easily pushed off the ball

    No aerial power

Has no shooting ability going forward

Has no pace to track back quickly

    Poor positioning sense

Lack of creativity and incisive passing

Has no skills to get out of tight corners

Denilson has a long way to go to be an Arsenal established regular if everyone is fit. He’s no ‘exceptional talent’ player. Song has now taken over the DM position as he’s proven to be the one with natural defensive ability and has a range of passing that Denilson lacks.

Whatever it is, Denilson’s better than David ‘egg-on-face’ Bentley

  295. Silvestre at centre back scares me.

    Team for Saturday….not fully knowing who’s fit…

    Fabianski

    Eboue Toure Song Silvestre

    Walcott Denilson Fabregas Arshavin

    Adebayor EDS

  296. Queen of Suburbia

Howard, prove 2/3rds of his passes are backwards.

Should be easy to do. You made the statement.

    Prove it.

  297. You’ve misunderstood there, QoS. As has been said many times, 85% of Denilson’s passes are sideways or backwards. Now we have also learnt that they are 2 or 3 yards.

  298. Howard’s stupidity almost defies credulity, but he does nevertheless possess a kind of childish cunning. Until a week or so ago, he openly hated at least half of our players. That made him universally despised. Now, he has decided to concentrate on just one player. By this tactic, he has attracted several allies, as a perusal of today’s comments will prove.

  299. PZ this is not a new tactic from Howard the F*ck, first it was Almunia (not good enough) letting goals in at his near post. Since then most of our players have been subject to his idiotic bile.

  300. I’m sorry, I se this last comment and think you’re living in la-la land.

His passes are not good; 2/3 yards passes sideways or backwards…..Leading passer in the league. I dont care if he passes it from his left leg to his right leg.So long as he keeps the ball in Arsenal possession he’s doing a great job!

    “Has no physical presence”
Nonsense. He’s not smaller than Mascherano. in fact he’s bigger. And he’s strong.

    “Easily pushed off the ball”
    Pfff

    “No aerial power”
Well here’s one weak area of his. But Walcott, Arshavin, Fabregas are all players who’re not good in the air. Mascherano: How many headers do you see him win?

“Has no shooting ability going forward”
Shows you don’t know the player. I’ve seen him fire in some great shots.

“Has no pace to track back quickly”
Denilson is not slow. And he covers more ground than 98% of players in the league. more than anyone at Arsenal for sure.

    “Poor positioning sense”
This is where you get dismissed for talking rubbish. You’re asserting the exact opposite of the fact. It’s his positioning and his reading of the game that makes him effective. That’s why he makes more interceptions than anyone else!

“Lack of creativity and incisive passing”

“Has no skills to get out of tight corners”
Howard you’re nuts! Or just completely blind! In every single game, we see Denilson, under pressure in a tight space, and he passes his way out.

    Look here’s the bottomline:

He leads the league in many stats that they measure of Premier League players. The Axim index….interceptions, passing, tackling, …………………

It simply makes you look idiotic to dismiss all that. What do you think? He’s got some potent Brazilian voodoo, that makes the stat takers count the others’ stats less?

JUST FECKING EXPLAIN WHY HIS STATS ARE SO GOOD, AND OTHERS’ WORSE THAN HIS.

This sounds like you saying that Chad is a richer country than Holland even though Holland’s GDP is 500 times higher than Chad’s.

  301. May that bile slowly dissolve him!

  302. I totally agree with Steve, this is not the first time he picks on a player and then when they do good…he moves on to the next.

In the past, it was Almunia like Steve said, Howard was dying to keep Mad Jens on because Almunia was no good for Arsenal. He doesn’t learn from the past, Almunia a year or two ago was in the same position Denilson is in now…his first year playing as first team regular…

Howard is not stupid, he is a Spud Con-man…tries to find something to rile us with against our own players…when we get on his back…he will say one or two good things about the club so we lay off him….

F*ck Off Howard…Go watch your English Idol Bentley the c*nt-man.

  303. Many thanks, Ole Gunner.

May I also say that I admire your patience?

  304. Ole, I was not be prepared to give an idiot such an in depth answer. So well done to you.

  305. Bottom line Howard….You go F*ck Off..

  306. I agree with G4E

  307. Eguren got the 2nd yellow card for stabbing his index finger into the German ref’s chest. He didn’t poke hard, but that official did not want to be touched and as soon as that happend, he looked down on his chest where he felt the contact and went straight for his cards. Apparently that whinging dirtbag lightly slapped Cesc in the face as he took his time getting off the pitch. Cameras missed that, but the commentators didn’t. Anyone at the game see it?

  308. You need a Kanu, Ade or Denilson who may be less flashy but get the job done.

Your examples are poor, Kanu was the flashiest player we ever had but rarely got the job done.

  309. Pfft. Read the other posts please. Thank you.

  310. Denilson started the season poorly there is no denying that. but the guy busted his gut the entire season and has improved so much he works hard never moans, very quite gets on with his game. people seem to forget during this unbeaten run he played every single game he is Mr reliable without him I don’t think we would go unbeaten this year also credit must be given to Song for helping out until our regular players came back.
Whats the situation with our defnders no Gallas Clichy, Sagna, and Gibbs. That alomost the entire back line. Possible line up for Saturday
Eboue -Toure – Song -Silvesta its not ideal but I think they can do the job

  311. Don’t attempt to insult my intelligence, Ruisliptiger. First you tell us Kanu is not flashy, then you suggest Gibbs’ long-term future is at centre-back? You don’t know this team.

  312. Crafty- Ruisliptiger is a Hull city fan but I think he admires Arsenal.

  313. To me, Ruisliptiger seems a bit of a muppet. No offence to our own “class” Muppet.

  314. I don’t know if there is a song about Arshavin, but I think the following will do fine.

To the tune of Boney M’s Rasputin:

Ar – Ar – Arshavin’s over from the Russian scene
    Another Arsenal legend is born
Ar – Ar – Arshavin Russia’s greatest goal machine
And now at Arsenal he’ll carry on

I really think he’ll terrorise Chelsea tomorrow, so I’ll be warming up the vocals.

  315. To be honest Bison if you aren’t going to read the posts properly then I will insult your intelligence Bison.

Things you failed to pick up on.

    1. I apologized for my lack of understanding of Kanu’s technical ability in my very next post.

    2. If you read my post properly you should have seen that I was posing a question regarding Gibbs and not an opinion. I haven’t a clue on if his future is at CB, this is why I thought I’d ask the more intelligent members of this board their opinion on the matter.

If your going to have a dig, please base it on something I’ve actually written. You are right though I don’t know the Arsenal team. I’m sure your knowledge of the City team is rather sketchy also.

There is much to like about Arsenal. A few things to dislike as well but that can be said of any team.

  316. Ruisliptiger as the Who would say ” Why should I (we)care” You are a NON gooner so your input is not important. So off to the Hull City site (If there is one).

  317. Maybe a simple F*ck off would do

  318. Google is your friend, there are plenty.

However, sometimes it’s good to stop sniffing your armpit long enough to have a sniff of someone else’s. It makes for a more rounded take on the smell emanating from your own armpit.

    Try it.

  319. http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/04/17/1213525/diego-godin-tells-arsenal-star-fabregas-to-keep-quiet-after-insu

“whatever happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch”

This is a curious code… Is there such a code? I wonder.

Now, Yellow Submarine stopper Diego Godin has come out to defend his team-mate and ask Fabregas to stop whining about what is generally regarded as a norm in the game.

“Things like these happen in football and they will always happen, but a player must not talk about it,” he was quoted as saying on Marca.

“I do not like it when someone goes out and discloses what happened on the field of play. Anyone who has ever played football will know the one code of the game, and that is whatever happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch.”

  320. sorry Matt .. didn’t intend the word ‘irritated’ … I know you were having fun

  321. Got it ruis-tigger … calm down … tis ok

  322. we do smell those others armpits … hell they are smelly …

  323. Howard doesn’t have facts, he has opinions

  324. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8003399.stm

What a prick! What is it with our ex-players? The day before an FA cup semi-final as well.

  325. It’s such facile analysis. He really doesn’t seem to get it.

It’s clear we wanted Flamini to stay but he pulled a number on us. On the strength of one season’s work we’d have had to offer a ridiculous amount to compete with Milan who didn’t have to pay a transfer fee and could offer a sum for signing.on as well.

No big deal; Denilson and Song are better and younger than he ever was, with just as much experience.

Hleb decided he wanted to leave back in February 2008. Fine, look where that got him. In come Nasri, then Arshavin. So I think we’re better off now than last season.

At least Petit finally grasps the reason we haven’t managed a title push…but totally misses the point.

“The key for Arsenal is to avoid injuries”

How do you do that then? Should Eduardo and Almunia have tried harder to avoid those studs up challenges?

And just how do you avoid the wear and tear of playing sides like Bolton and Blackburn every couple of weeks. It mounts up. Maybe we could avoid injuries by forfeiting a few games against the violent teams…

  326. Haha! I italicised that whole thing. Man I need to get the hang of this sh*t!

  327. Now that’s how you do it!

  328. Yogi Warrior u r a brilliant author

Too many muppets killing ur site

Why so much hate and aggression?

    Its childish

  329. Huh? Who is this guy?

  330. How do you do it Al?

Go away Ruislip. When you start insulting Arsenal fans on this site, there is just no room for you.

  331. Thia guy is from LG. He was having a row with Matt there yesterday.

  332. Franchise normally appears on Le Grove.

Franchise – you are welcome to blog, you are out of moderation.

If however, things get out of hand, like you think that Song is a good player – then Yellow Card

If you don’t behave after that, then I’ll have to boot you I’m afraid. You are allowed your opinion, but so long as it agrees with ours.

  333. That seems fair Muppet.

  334. Hi CB, you do this, but without the spaces between the brackety things and the “i”:

    word you want to italicise

    Should look like this

  335. Sh1t, OK, this, but without the dashes (-):

–word you want to italicise –

  336. Oh f*ck this thing!

  337. You’ve lost it, Big Al.

  338. The code disappears! It’s the code I tells ya!!

  339. That was very helpful Big Al. Has someone called the doctor?

  340. Hello Franchise.

    Are you in peace?

  341. ()word you want to italicise()

    Without the parentheses!

  342. I give up. The internet’s making me look like a lunatic.

  343. very good

  344. Don’t worry, Consolsbob. It’s all the internet’s fault.

  345. ,and bold too

  346. excellent

  347. Look, it’s simple: You just need to (). Then:

    And voila!

    Not bad, huh?

  348. Shit!

  349. Ah, that one didn’t work.

    Try this. I hate manu.

  350. Wel the new master of the italic and the ,bold. That’s for sure.

    Can’t hack the underline though

  351. Consolbob i wasnt having a row with Matt we were conversing like adults

I just cant understand why gunners are split cos of differing opinions

Anyways we need to do the chavs tomorrow

  352. Now, if I could only learn how to type.

  353. Luke that’s an interesting link since I haven’t heard a word from Fabregas but I now know what went on thanks to Godin – good job of keeping what happens on the pitch, on the pitch!

The Villareal tactics were very disappointing in regards to the way they targetted Fabregas in both games in an attempt to get him riled up and sent off. It’s not sportsmanship.

  354. Queen of Suburbia,

I came in peace on here and was told not to be sensitive when a couple of posters sneered at me because i post on LG. I am too old and too ugly to be influenced by any site.
I don’t share exactly the same views as many sites, but i support the Arsenal, first and foremost.
I read arseblog,a good synopsis on a daily basis but the comments are futile and hardly ever based upon football.
Just make it clear about the do’s and don’t s on here, if you don’t mind,as some on here think this is a select closed club, and outsiders are not welcome, whilst others put forward interesting and debatable views.Anyone care to answer in a civil way.

  355. Oh no! Now the internet’s making Franchise look like a lunatic.

  356. I agree with you on the need to do the chavs tomorrow. Also that all Arsenal fans should unite.

I must say that some of the comments directed at Matt in particular and ACLF in general were pretty rude though. Sorry if you were not one of the guilty ones. There has been a bit of crossover between the two sites recently which is good to see.

We are Arsenal. We are on our own.

  357. Everyone is happy to see new contributors on here, so long as they adopt the correct opinions.

  358. I was, presumably, one of those who you say, ‘sneered’ at you, Kelsey. Not so. I disagreed with your post and told you so.

As far as I am concerned, and I am sure other ACLF posters, all Arsenal fans are welcome to post here. If anybody talks bollox, they will be taken to task. That seems fair to me.

  359. I don’t think Gunners are neccesarily split over differing opinions, more over how those opinions are expressed.

As an Arsenal fan, if someone writes X player isn’t good enough, I think they should be prepared to explain why without being insulting.

    Are you going tomorrow Franchise?

  360. I dont get ur bias against LG

there are regular posters on there with varying views and opinions.

Knowing when to draw the line on an argument or debate is key cos it normally degenrates into insults n cheap shots.

We are all gonners at the end of the day. trying to segregate the LG bloggers from the ACLF bloggers is unneccessary.

this is a gunner blog i shouldnt come on here declaring Peace as my intentions its unneccessary.

I like to chat and ive learnt not to force my opinions on people.

Think about it anyways. Take care

    3-1 tomorrow to the Arsenal

  361. Kelsey,

Nobody I would imagine personally objects to anybody coming from LG. It’s a free world.

The only thing I would say is that whilst LG can be very very funny, it also operates strange double standards when it comes to debate. If you decide to deride somebody, frankly, for being a twat, when they criticise Arsenal players, the manager and the club, then you get booted from the side. You may not have seen this, but many of us here have had it happen to us and do not like it. If anything Pedro and Geoff should be thrown off of WordPress, not the people that are being evicted from trying to support the club.

Before you say anything else, don’t give me the spiel that they are loyal followers etc etc. That doesn’t excuse the promotion of negativity and the singling out of certain players as scapegoats which they do on a weekly basis.

  362. Didn’t I read a post on here the other morning from Kelsey telling us that Song, Denilson and Eboue were not good enough for Arsenal? That Ade was ‘up his arse’ and that Vela was not going to make it?

I may be paraphrasing but I am sure that was the general tenor.

  363. Franchise,

You’ve been indoctrinated by people who don’t know the meaning of debate. How can you debate with somebody who moderates you and then throws you off the blog ?

  364. I think you have to be accepted to post on LG Franchise, is that not so?

Anyone can post here. We have had some right tw@ts to prove that point!

Good Luck to you and all true Arsenal fans.

  365. Hi Kelsey, its not my site, so i wouldn’t presume to issue a list of do’s and don’ts.

In general I can say that after a short period of “adaptation” this is an excellent place to talk about Arsenal in a relatively adult, positive manner.

I say this because I know from your postings on LG you generally butt heads with those who’s default setting is “find something wrong”. I’ve often thought you’d like it on here.

If you express an opinion on here, generally you’ll be offered the opportunity to support it.

Hazing for any newbies should probably be expecting though. Check out my battle royale with Poliziano in the archives for evidence of this. We love each other now and recently bought a small cafe in St Ives together.

It’s a do-upper but we think it could be a little gold mine.

  366. Morning All!

I post on LG too Kelsey, and not a single person on here has had a pop at me for it, so i say enjoy both mate.

I am hoping that Gibbs is OK for tomorrow, and that we can do a decent job of keeping Drogba quiet.

I think we have a pretty decent chance if we can.

  367. yes,
that was the jist of it Consolub. It’s my opinion that Song and Denilson weren’t good enough for a side aiming to win trophies.to me they are understudies as we haven’t replaced like for like.Maybe i am old fashioned but Eboue though a favorite with the players has only one position that he plays well, that is at RB. He cheats and dives, and that is unacceptable to me.I lost all respect for Adebayor last summer, though for the moment he is an integral part of the team, but to me his loyalties are first and foremost to himself.i don’t rate vela as i said previously,i may be wrong that just my opinion.

i have watched the gunners for 50 years and though I think considering the rstrictions on buying at the moment,we are doing really well, one or two reinforcements last summer wouldn’t have gone a miss.I won’t get into a slanging match with anyone, and rarely swear to emphasize a point. That’s just me.

  368. That was a misunderstanding, QoS. I’ve only been to Le Grove once or twice, and I saw no reason to stay. For a long time, I believed it was just a myth. I don’t know who posts there and who doesn’t, except when someone on here mentions the fact. When someone is revealed as a Grover, naturally I expect the worst. My expectations have often been fulfilled, but sometimes my suspicions have been unjustified. With hindsight, I think I’d call my discussion with you a tiff rather than a battle royale.

“We’re all gonners at the end of the day.”
True, and we just have to make the most of the time allotted us.

  369. QOS,

I had a fallout with some on LG, because it touched a nerve,it was very personal.it has been resolved now,but i post on there when i feel lke it,not an obsession to post 50 times a day like some do on all blogs.
    Anyway,thanks for our response.

  370. Kelsey,
You say, “I don’t share exactly the same views as many sites.” Perhaps you don’t share the views of many sites, but you have identical views to many posters. We’ve seen comments the same as yours a thousand times.

  371. Thinking about it, the nicest thing on here is that its pretty self regulating.

I don’t recall ever seeing Yogi say “Don’t worry guys, I’ve booted him”. You see that every single day from Geoff and Pedro.

Check out yesterdays treatment of James for example for having the temerity to question the “Give an opinion, not get one” line.

It’s their blog to do with what they want. Just pointing out that Yogi doesn’t do that.

  372. Poliziano,

what are you saying exactly.Of course i have the same view as many.Have i said Wenger is no good,i just have an opinion,i don’t get what you are saying. kindly elaborate.

  373. Ok Kelsey justify your opinions though.

Why isn’t Denilson good enough? What do players in his position in sides that are “challenging for honours” do that he doesn’t?

  374. Well, kelsey, either you are the originator of those false opinions, or you have copied them from others.

  375. I must admit, i have been critical of Denilson in the past.

If i had to point out one thing that i notice from watching him is that his positioning when we are defending sometimes causes me concern.

On numerous occasions i have seen him ‘wrong side’ of an attacking player – i.e. not between the player and your own goal.

This usually leads to someone else having to close him down, or trying to tackle him from behind.

Now i am not saying Denilson is a bad player – just one thing that i have noticed.

  376. The F.A. Cup and the Champions League are presumably not honours.

  377. I can’t stand Le Grove. I see them as commercial bloggers and not Arsenal fans. They adopt tabloid tactics, and they’re dictatorial idjits. And they actually think they know better than Wenger and an Arsenal board that have created one of the biggest sporting brands in the world. Their megalomania is insane.

I categorise them with Daily Mail, NOTW, Mirror…sites I would never visit.

  378. You might as well ask someone to justify saying that 2+2=5.

  379. I think PZ is saying that many have said Denilson, Song, Eboue are not good enough but rarely have they demonstrated why?

  380. I read endless stats about denilson, which one can intrpet as one wishes,I just clarified that to me he is still an understudy,or in the learning progress.i didn’t say he was crap.if he had one or two older experienced players around hinm,as fab did when he first came into the team, though a lot younger, it would improve his game.he shoulders a lot of responsibility for one so young,so maybe you misunderstood what i meant.it is easier to define with a spoken word, rather than typing it.

  381. That’s a blinkered view to have Ole, and a bit hypocritical.

You are basically saying that because you don’t agree with them, they are wrong – which is the same thing they have been accused of.

I quite often do not agree with what is written on there, but i don’t think you can question that they are Arsenal supporters.

And just because you wouldn’t visit certain sites, doesn’t make them off limits to everyone.

I like to get a wide cross section of views on things, i find it interesting.

I may buy The Times and the NOTW on a Sunday – doesn’t make me a member of Mensa or a chav. ;-)

  382. poliziano,
you are just making a debate an arguement.i can see with my own eyes, you obviously don’t respect my opinions, and quite frankly are quite condesending towards me.>let’s leave it at that,as we obviously don’t see eye to eye,but don’t assume things about people you don’t know, please.

  383. I just gave a reason why i have been critical of Denilson QoS. ;-)

  384. kelsey,

I don’t think you can interpret Denilson’s stats anyhow other than that he’s been a consistent and very effective midfielder, and a key player this season.

It’d be a repudiation of statistics as a science if the stats could be so unequivocal about something, and the reality were completely different.

  385. I wonder if Geoffenal or Paedo will ever post on here.

  386. Truth is one, but lies are infinite.

  387. Kelsey, re: Denilson.

I consider football to be a very simple sport. Its about two things.

    1. What you do with the ball
    2. What you do when you haven’t got the ball.

Furthermore, i want my defensive midfield player to give the ball to a teammate. Denilson does that more than any other player in the league. That’s not a manipulated stat – thats a fact.

When he doesn’t have the ball, i want him to go get it. Last time I checked his intercepts and tackles, he’s in the top 3 in the league.

If that’s the performance of an “understudy” what do you call those that don’t do those things as well as he?

That’s basically the case “For”. If he’s not good enough, i ask you the same question I’ve asked others – what do you want a player to do better than he does?

  388. its not self regulating over here. Ive read comments about where ppl are insulted cos they arent as optimistic as u want them to be. its been the same the internet went mainstream. public web forums are normally infiltrated with disrespectful and rude people. its a smaller community here so its expected that u might have less assholes coming on here to make trouble. i saw how u guys almost ate Howard alive cos he said he doesnt rate denilson. Stop the hypocrisy

  389. Alex Ice Cream

    Guys,

Let kelsey express his opinions without having to get into an argument. If you don’t agree then fine.

I don’t doubt that these are “his” opinions and that kelsey is not a cut and paste merchant.

I have been accused of copying others’ opinions and being media led which is utter bollox and I know how patronising this is.

  390. Matt,

I always read Arsenal Insider. I almost always disagree with FTK. Same with Arseblog.

    I love contrary opinions.

What I can’t stand is dishonest actors. 18 months ago when we were flying, I went to their blog, and talked up the team in comparison with Man Poo, and I actually got banned.

I see their headlines. I know how tabloids work.

  391. Kelsey – you are interpretting PZ as being aggressive towards you –

I think what he is doing is basically saying “he loves Arsenal and everything Arsenal, you’ve just critisised 3 Arsenal players with a very weak justification that you’d like to see older players around Denilson.

How does that refute that he’s an excellent DM?

  392. “Making a debate an argument.”

Are the two words not synonymous?

If you want to advance a theory contrary to reason, you must do more than state an opinion.

  393. Franchise,

Don’t be a knob. If your child talks bollocks are you going to adopt a liberal attitude and allow them to talk freely, or are you going to take them to one side and give them a roasting.

Frankly your argument is shit. And you’ve been duped by Geoff and Pedro into thinking they allow free debate when others don’t. The opposite is true, they only allow free debate if it agrees with their views – which incidentally are shit as well.

  394. Franchise – you’ve seen a snapshot of the Howard thing. There has been a lot of stuff from Howard that you’ve missed.

  395. Calm down people!

Are we not all advocating for the same thing?

A balanced debate about all things Arsenal?

  396. Alex fair enough – I think people are asking him to delve a little deeper and justify his opinions though.

  397. Yes indeed we are Matt.

I’d love an Answer from you or Kelsey regarding my 10:52 post.

  398. If someone wants just to advertise his own opinion, as a kind of exhibitionism, that’s fine. We now know Kelsey’s opinion, and much pleasure may it give him. I respected him enough to assume he wanted more than that – that he wanted to inform, to persuade, to correct. If that is so, he must expect to have to defend his (indefensible) opinions.

  399. Not a roasting in the man. utd.’s players sense of the word, I hope.

  400. Ive not been duped by anyone there are several bloggers on LeGrove that have always been consistent with their views although they are contrary to the authors. they havent been banned. A lot that have been cos they are just there to cause trouble. And re Howard i dont know what has been going on but i was just trying to make a point about the atmosphere on here.

  401. I am not brain washed by one site or another.Maybe i don’t know the posting history of people on here, but i surely can have an opinion on the team i support.
Are you saying evryone on here thinks denilson,Song and eboue are the best players to be in our squad.

I can’t argue with you QOS,but it’s still only an opinion, well backed up with facts, and AW seems to think that denilson is an integral part of the team.i can’t put up an arguement at this time for anyone else to replace him, because we are very limited with options in a fairly young team.

  402. By self regulated Franchise, I mean that Yogi doesn’t utilise his option “to have the final say and hit block” where as Geoff and Pedro do on a daily basis.

Probably self regulated is the wrong way of expressing it – i guess I mean, largely free from regulation. The main method of rooting out people comes from the posters rather than “from the top”.

    Power corrupts.

  403. I think Kelsey’s view is very wrong. It’s a widely held view though. And it’s very much in the spirit of debate and free speech to challenge other people’s views. Nobody has insulted him or tried to suppress his views.

  404. I thought i had answered you QoS.

As i said, for me, Denilson’s defensive positioning is not always the best.

I have seen him on numerous occasions the ‘wrong side’ of an attacking player, which has left us exposed, and caused another player to have to close down, or for Denilson to try and tackle someone from behind.

If a player has lost him, then it will not figure in any tackle won stats, as he would not be in the position to execute a tackle.

I am not saying he is a bad player, i think he is OK – but i prefer Song next to Cesc.

  405. So we’re basically saying I’m right about Denilson then Kelsey? :-)

  406. From now on, we don’t distinguish between facts and opinions, but between “opinion well backed up with facts,” and, I suppose, opinion ill backed-up with facts.

  407. Self-regulated is exactly the right term.

  408. Matt, I disagree with your opinion ill backed-up with facts.

  409. LOL – OK Poliziano – that’s fine.

I am happy for you to disagree. ;-)

It would be difficult for me to back up with facts unless i took a video camera with me and filmed each time he did it, and then posted it. ;-)

  410. Your argument doesn’t stack up Matt to me.

If his defensive positioning was not good. Why would he have the best interceptions stats in English football?

Isn’t that an accurate way to measure defensive positoning i.e. putting yourself in the place that allows you to win the ball?

  411. Never argue with a lady QOS ;)

  412. I’m happy to be proven wrong Kelsey. But you’ll have to work hard for it!

  413. What is the point of this so called ‘debate’? The fact is certain people have made their minds up that this player and that player aren’t good enough and no evidence to the contrary will change that view.

If we have a player who is near the top for all the qualities that you would want in a DM yet he is still not considered good enough, then there seems little point to continuing to ‘debate’ with you because you will never get it.

  414. Poliziano,

maybe it’s just your style of writing in response to me If you knew some things about me and my connection to the club, you might look at things another way.it is not an idle boast,as anyone can say anything or be anyone on the internet, just accept that i am no liar, and i definitely wouldn’t take it further on an open internet forum.

  415. I think the fun of the “debate” passenal is that with reasonable people (which i believe Kelsey and Matt to be) there is the hope that they will see your point of view.

Or be beaten into submission, its all good. ;-)

  416. OK – One example – in your opinion, who should of been closing Senna down last week?

  417. Matt,

Give 3 examples from our games about Denilsons’ poor positioning….I’m giving 3 examples of his great positioning.

    1. Saturday against Wigan. We had a succession of three corner kicks. Guess who was first to the balle each time? Denilson.

    2. The Totti Stamp on Denilson, Roma at home. The pass came to Totti, Denilson anticipated it, screened off Totti, controlled the ball in a tight space, and Totti stamped on him out of sheer frustration. In that whole tie over two legs, Denilson marked out Totti.

    3. Man City at home. SWP gets behind Clichy, who tracks back to win the ball cleanly and pass it out of a tight area? Denilson.

I’d like 3 concrete examples of yours…time for us to start backing up our views.

  418. To make drama for me I am going to return when these ‘fans’ go back personally I am still smiling over getting through to the semis being 1 of the 4 best teams in Europe etc you know small things like that….I must say however like ole gunner I go on arsenalinsder and arseblog and throught that must arsenal fansites were like LF of the same ilk untill I went that the hell hole that is legrove….eww it really was like a spuds site what they forgotton and need to check out the definition for is supporter and fan….oh and the childish name calling against many and QofS in particular had me convinced that they could be no older that 16 the lot of them….

  419. I just gave you one Ole – i can’t remember everytime i have seen it in every game, but i also seem to recall Man City breaking against us when they hit the post and thinking a similiar thing…

  420. Oh Matt, who should have been closing down Senna? Denilson or Nasri. Tactically I’ll even say Nasri because Denilson dropped deep to cover any midfield runners.

  421. I have some sympathy for the view that Denilson could have been closer to Senna, Matt. But specific examples tend to distort the overall picture.

Essentially that fact that we conceded a goal is cited as proof of poor positioning. You could extend that arguement and state every goal conceded is the result of an error. To that end, i would counter that we have conceded very few goals so must have committed very few errors.

I maintain that the intercepts stats over the course of a whole season and therefore with no statisical outliers being given undue weighting demonstrates that Denilsons positioning is not only good but right at the very top of his profession.

  422. U see Maria its choice. Le Grove is arguably one of the most popular arsenal blogs on the net and u reckon its like a Spud site. so are u saying that most of arsenal fans are like Spuds???? Its nice to have differnt sides to a story. No one is always right thats why its nice to read different opinions. A lot of English people dont rate the national team but it doesnt stop them from supporting them. Everything is open to critic and I myself dont buy the blind support thingy

  423. Maria – as i’m sure you are aware from first hand experience, intellegent, articulate women tend to scare the hell out of a certain type of man. And that often makes then respond in an infantile, aggrsive and sometime offensive manner.

Hence, its just best to surround yourself with gentlemen.

  424. It’s frankly ridiculous to say that the fact that a team breaks against us means it’s Denilson’s fault. It’s that kind of bias that allows you to dismiss his actual contributions. How was it Denilson’s fault? As I remember it, it was Clichy who went on a run, lost the ball and got stranded. Denilson was to be seen tracking back to cover the defence. it’s not like he was missing. if that were the case you’d remotely have a point.

You simply can’t ignore the fact that we’ve only conceded what, 8 goals in 22 or something like that.

  425. I wonder if you’d agree Franchise. I guess its a joke, but the Arsene Wenger Smugometer on LG wouldn’t look out of place on a Spurs blog.

  426. Hey, you guys asked for specific examples to back up my argument and i gave you one.

You could also argue that we have conceded less goals as the team as a whole has been performing better – Gallas has been a rock, Toure has found some form, Song has improved immensely…..

I agree that Denilson does good work for the team, and i am not saying that everything he does is wrong.

All i was saying that, i can understand why not everyone shares you views on him, as i have noticed times where i think he has been caught out of position.

  427. You simply can’t ignore the fact that we’ve only conceded what, 8 goals in 22 or something like that.

I think that’s a killer fact when you’re analysing the performance of the team’s defensive midfielder.

Our defensive record this calender year has been great.

    Denilson has been an ever-present.

Statistically he’s one of the best players in the league.

    All this is pretty unequivocal.

  428. …calendar… yeesh!

  429. i think its hilarious QoS. Sometimes we fans put Wenger on too high a pedestal.

  430. Posters on ACLF include fans from UK plus Africa, Asia, Latin and North America and believe that Arsenal is a big club, with international links. for example, African support for Arsenal could fill emirates twice a week twice over, it is massive. Some of the blog sites present narrow, bigoted anglo-centric views. Bad for Arsenal.

A number of Arsenal fans don’t appreciate that Wenger is much more ambitious than any other manager in European football today; to call it a ‘youth policy’ is insulting and shallow. He is creating a team to dominate for a decade, a style of play that is all but re-writing football, and all he needs was a bit of time and fan support. Instead what he got was insistent calls to resign or buy, and team was all but written off by January.

Fans should appreciate what we have achieved – acclaimed the world over as one of the two most exciting teams in modern football.

In that context one must judge the efforts of Denilson , Song, Ade, Eboue, Almunia – our own players who have been pretty viciously criticized and attacked. The booing of Eboue being one of the shameful events ever to take place.

But before you think some of us ‘internationals’ somehow don’t belong, I will tell you I have supported Arsenal since I was a boy, the 70/71 double. We feel we belong to Arsenal. Africa loves Arsenal. And we feel some of the home-based support can be bigoted, and utterly short-sighted, wanting a one-season wonder more than a great team of the future.

At ACLF mostly these issues are accepted, and are the bottom line by which we argue, debate, agree, joke, whatever. That’s what I have found.

Personally I would like an apology from LG for calling Eboue’s harmless and joyful celebration a ‘monkey dance’, and they did this because it doesn’t ‘conform’ to some idiotic sense of Englishness. Arsenal is bigger than that. Arsenal supporters should understand where this club is going. Given the amazing technical elements of AW’s strategy, the long term view, one would expect Arsenal fans to be some of the best football commentators.

Let’s support our team, our players, all of them, and understand what Arsenal is trying to achieve. Let’s applaud AW for just having the guts to attempt this amazing adventure. That’s a starting point for a mutual understanding.

  431. It’s manifestly true, Big Al, but hardly unequivocal, as the chaos of voices this morning demonstrates.

  432. For the record, I was moderated and banned at LG nearly two years ago for having the temerity to question the motivation of the bloggers for their vitriolic slagging of Ade and Eboue in particular. As someone said earlier they are in the tabloid market, appealing to the worst instincts and prejuidices in the English public. No amount of revisionism and bandwaggon hopping will change the spots on that leopard.

  433. I for one hope never to see intelligent, articulate women on here. :)

  434. One of us –

I think that’s a killer fact when analysing the performance of a TEAM defensively – not 1 player.

  435. Different sense of humour to me then I guess Franchise. I think of AW as an extremely humble man – not cut from the Brian Clough mould at all.

  436. Shotta – i had a bet with a poster on LG that Ade would score more than 15 goals this season during the time people were slagging him…

Funnily enough, the person in question has not offered me my winnings yet! :-)

  437. It’s fascinating to see with my own eyes the corruption of some Arsenal fans. I never expected to see an Arsenal fan claim that insults to Wenger are hilarious.

  438. I’m beginning to think we’ve put Franchise on too high a pedestal. I wonder how hilarious he would find it if the shoe was on the other foot.

  439. Matt – it doesn’t seem reasonable to cite a goal against us as evidence of your case and then argue that the pivot point of goals not conceded do not constitute evidence against it.

Have you chosen to ignore my point re: interceptions over a season as being a reasonable method of illustrating positional awareness?

  440. Chelsea conceded 7 goals in 2 games with the great Michael Essien playing.

It’s not like other players never make mistakes and fail to close down players.

But in every case we look at the big picture. We say, even if Denilson caused 3 goals tomorrow, he’s still been a great player this season because his performance over the season justifies that view.

I am just incredulous that Denilson’s still under trial to be frank. He’s saved our arses this season. Without Denilson stepping up to the plate this season, what would our season have been like?

Man City have a big hairy, 6 ft 100 defensive midfielder and they still ship goals left and centre.

  441. …f*cking hell, what the f*ck is going on on this f*cking site today, ffs….couple of tw*ts decided to join us I see….

  442. Matt, It’s a killer fact not the killer fact. Not that decisive by itself, but when combined with his individual stats, and the fact that he has played 42 games this season, I think we’ve got something that’s difficult to refute.

  443. I’m here most days Frank :-)

  444. For tomorrow:

The key will be whether Drogba gets another offside goal. He’s scored 5 of those against us in 5 years.

I’m so confident about the game tomorrow. I predict: 2-0 to the mighty Arsenal.

  445. U see what I mean. Frank is exactly the kind of people u dont need on any blog.

  446. So is the stat for number of interceptions per game?

It would be interesting to compare it to the number of passes completed by the opposition in said game.

  447. De Jong cost City $16 million (GBP I mean) for heavens sake and he is not good enough to tie the laces on Denilson’s boots. But he was one of the big expensive DM that the children at Le Grove keep pining for. These guys have no credibility as evaluators of talent. Matt and Kelsey welcome to a site where where you have to back up ur opinion with facts.

  448. And if you are reffering to me Frank – thanks.

As i keep saying – I don’t think Denilson is a bad player – in fact, i think he is a good player, not great, good.

The only point i was trying to make was, and i think i backed it up with examples as you asked, is that can understand why he divides opinion.

  449. The stat is the number of intercetions across a season compared with his peers, Matt.

Individual game stats can be misleading as players can have an off day.

  450. Shotta – you don’t need to patronise me and welcome me to the site – i have been reading ACLF for a long time. :-)

  451. But the issue re: Denilson is just the wrong terms of reference. It’s more simple and Matt, AIC, Kelsey etc you are being too complicated.

The basis of Arenals current position, which we all agree is good, is the unbeaten run stitched together over about 25 matches since ManC, including the 0-0 period. That is our foundation.

Two players are largely responsible – Song and Denilson, and considering the injuries and their ages it is an extraordinary accomplishment.

to them one would add RvP and his indomitable spirit, Almunia, and the back 4, but they S&D have been the pivot. Next in line for plaudits .. Eboue, and character he has shown.

  452. Are the stats published on the net QoS?

I wouldn’t mind taking a look. (not for any other reason than because i am interested!). ;-)

  453. They’re taken from the whole season. I don’t know the scientific term, but the more games Denilson plays in the more reliable stats you’ll get. Surely?

  454. Franchise: U come here from LG telling us who we don’t need at ACLF. Now look here sonny…

  455. So Matt, having now been presented with facts are you prepared to accept that those with a negative opinion of him have a very weak case?

  456. You are all winning me over with your objective arguments.

Now show me where the stats are so i can see for myself and become enlightened. ;-)

  457. Try The Telegraph Sports section, hit statistics and you can filter the areas you are interested in Matt.

Also have a look at The Guardian Chalkboards they are interesting because they show that the accusation that all Denilson does is pass the ball backwards or sideways is also wrong.

  458. …nope not you, Matt….and QoS nor you, sorry not a reference to anatomy…..

  459. Well, well. I wondered how hilarious Franchise would find it if the shoe was on the other foot, and he’s given me an answer.

  460. …on his chocolate foot….

  461. shotta if any is sounding like a kid it sure is urself. ive been reading this blog for years as with several others. the author is class, there are some childish wits like urself, there are some that rate denilson, there are some that dont, there are some that think we should have sold Ade, there are some that dont. dont think u r any greater a gunner than myself cos my views are more hard line.

  462. Matt – try having the same discussion on LG. You saw where it got me…

  463. Frank,
by going by your own rules, kindly back up your opinion with facts, with your reference to a couple of twats being on here today.

  464. Denilson bashers are refuting an awful lot of facts:

Highest Arsenal player in the Axim index which measures players’ key contributions to a team’s results.

He covers more ground than ANY Arsenal player, and ANY defensive midfielder in the league.

Passes better. Intercepts better. Does so many damn things better.

If he just had a high pass ratio that’d be one thing. Or just a high intercepts ration. But in every department he’s outstanding.

That CANT be coincidence. it’s insane to think it is!

  465. …. ‘If you knew some things about me and my connection to the club, you might look at things another way.it is not an idle boast,as anyone can say anything or be anyone on the internet, just accept that i am no liar, and i definitely wouldn’t take it further on an open internet forum…..’

Kelsey, what sort of f*cking w*nker makes a statement like that??? What are you?…the Atmosphere Coordinator

  466. Yogi u see why u should regulate ur site cos…. too many Muppets seeking refuge. they choose to hate everything linked to LG. Grow up guys. u know who u are. Im off to the Spuds site

  467. Kelsey, Frank starts from the position that anyone that utters the slightest anti-Arsenal sentiment is a tw*t.

His is an extreme view for sure, but when you think about it logically its very supportive.

If you wouldn’t accept the point from a Spuds fan, why should you accept it from an Arsenal fan?

  468. …I have no idea what or who LG is…I only have time to visit one blogsite….

  469. Ole – i hardly think i am a Denilson basher…. ;-)

QoS – i saw exactly where it got you, as i got drawn into it also. ;-)

Thanks for the pointer to the stats, i am going to have a butcher’s now…

  470. You could justify your point if you posted the same thing in inverse on LG, Franchise.

  471. Zim-Paul @ 11:41 am: Thanks for giving us an Afro-centric perspective on this blog. I never had the chance to express how important this. The “monkey-dance” quote from LG is one of the many racist innuendos that go unchallenged daily on these jingoistic, chauvinistic sites, ACLF excluded. I always felt that one of the reasons the African contingent at Arsenas was gratuitously slagged and villified by these bloggers was the lack of a challenge by African posters, particularly since these players are from Franco-phone Africa.

  472. I can’t find an interceptions stat on either the Telegraph or Guardian sites….

  473. Hang on – i’ll get you a link.

  474. Frank or Franchise? Who is better off ACLF or LG? Heh, Heh, Heh! What a twat?

  475. And Alex Song doesn’t feature in any of the stats on the Telegraph pages – What the f**k has he been doing all season!!! ;-)

  476. ZimPaul @ 11.41.

    Respect !

  477. …Denilson and Alex Song are fantastic reliable midfield players…both have kicked on this season and are now up there with the best in the prem…..

…if there has been a crisis at the club this season…it has been a crisis in support…..many supporters have been found wanting…..when the chips were down and the side, wracked with injury, needed solid home support….wasn’t there….in fact some so-called supporters started booing….some even flooded the blogsites angrily justifying their disloyalty….

….the Manager and Players have class…..Arsenal Supporters do not have class…..or at least not all of them….

….and the Atmosphere Coordinator has absolutely no f*cking class at all……

  478. Afternoon all,

  479. ….oh I know….Kelsey, are you the person in the Gunnersaurus costume?….

….how about one of the men digging for worms on the pitch at half time?…you one of those, Kelsey….

    ….team coach driver?……

….maybe you iron the names onto shirts in the Arsenal shop…are you going on how many of each name is requested by customers?….

  480. Is the coast clear guys….??

  481. oh I’ve got it….you are Peter Hill-Wood….yep he would make stupid comments like that…..you young Mr Grace, Kelsey….

    ….by the way, son…there are no rules….

  482. Ah, disenfranchised at last.

  483. So funny!
Zimpaul ~ cool head in a stormy teacup..nice.

Ladies.. always a pleasure… without you there would be chaos.. Passenal, please let us know, when the idiots have gone, who your DM is ?

Off to St.Ives, for a spot of calm, pehaps get the easel out..

  484. How are things with the atmosphere coordinator Frank?

What chance we can oust him and get you the job?

  485. Do you think maybe the reason people dont rate Denilson is coz he gets on with things simple and doesnt stand out. I like denilson but i dont expect him to single handedly win a game for us. I think people expect too much from him already. But we go back to the old cliche of his age and that he is better then others were at that age.

  486. i’ve had a read of the comments today and i’m surprised at the debate.
we attack as a team and we defend as a team.
our defensive performance has improved since the first third of the season and denilson and song are a big part of that improvement.

saturday is going to be a big test, but i’m strangely not worried about the teams relative merits in central midfield (as i have been on most other recent arsenal chelski matches). i’m more concerned about drogba getting stuck into our defence considering our injury situation.

  487. Ponyboy,
QoS and I look forward to seeing you in St. Ives. I can’t wait for you to meet our son Robin. By the way, our cafe isn’t licensed. I hope that’s not a problem.

  488. Dead right Matty – if we can keep Drogba quiet, we have a damn good chance….

  489. Alex Ice Cream

Denilson is truly the new Gilberto in that he divides opinions.

Other than Howard I don’t see anyone here who is particularly anti-Denilson. Saying that Denilson has been caught out of position is not saying much. Any defensive midfielder is caught out of position from time to time. In fact any player is. Gilberto, Essien, Makalele have all been caught out of position! This is utterly obvious.

I have noticed this myself but to be fair in the earlier part of the season. One example that I remember is the Fenerbache game at home when the scores were 0-0 we had a corner, lost possession the broke and eventually fired over the bar and Denilson was nowhere to be seen.

Denilson is playing his first season and has done very well. Few people on this blog dispute this but to suggest that he is the finished article is nonsense. His positional sense has improved and will improve further.

I also think that sometimes people are over-sensitive on this blog. Just by saying Denilson has been caught out positionally does not mean that you do not rate him and that he is rubbish. You are just pointing out something that you have noticed.

  490. Couldn’t agree more Alex. ;-)

  491. …oversensitive???…fark arf…..

  492. I see Arsenal winning comfortably tomorrow. All of Arsenal’s big guns are firing. Hard to find one single player in the squad who’s off form. For Chelsea it’s just Cech, Cole, Carvalho, Terry, Ballack, Kalou….

  493. Hey Shotta, I tried to post on LG about the racist innuendo and I was ‘moderated’. It was in a discussion about fair play and I questioned LG’s fair play. I may have used an insult or three.

Part of the problem is that England, like Italy, and unlike France and Portugal has been way behind understanding the phenomenal growth of African football. They are still stuck in a time-warp from 70s when Zaire was humiliated at the world cup.

In the 90s when France already had 300+ registered African players there were still few African players in English football.

One of the proudest moments of Arsenal for me was the day AW put out a team of 10 black players – lordy lord what a shock the commentators had – AW understands that the issue is non-racism in football. This explains the support for Arsenal in Africa – not the black players there. Africans generally are non-racist.

Well, times are a changing, led by Arsenal I might add, and now the represenattion of Africans is quite high, but attitudes are stuck in media stereotypes and glory days of empire gone.

Trust me, Arsenal is more important than most imagine in this. Africa loves Arsenal.

  494. “I think the fun of the “debate” passenal is that with reasonable people (which i believe Kelsey and Matt to be) there is the hope that they will see your point of view.”

But if cold hard facts don’t do it nothing will, so it is completely futile in my opinion.

  495. PZ – may i smuggle in a bottle or two of Mare Piccolo ?
It would suit the mood. Hope you’re helping with the nappies.. you macho Italians sometimes neglect such things…

  496. ZimPaul – there’s no point in getting into a pissing contest with a skunk.

OG – that’s confidence for you.. you really think we will win ? What about the CL ?

  497. I can be reasonable sometimes Passenal, it has been known. ;-)

  498. Alex Ice Cream

    Didn’t take you long Frank!

  499. Zimpaul –
    – In my younger days, i tried to post on there..reasonable comments ~ was moderated each time.

To ( vainly, hopefully) put the whole thing to bed..LG is where the less intelligent people go.
ACLF is full of fun, mischief, intelligence, proper analysis, good people etc.

    No bias, naturally.

  500. Muppet,

Usually going into crunch games I am 50-50 but in this case I think we’re fresher and more in form than Chelsea. And they have a defensive crisis. The defending I saw in their last 2 games was shocking.

  501. …doesn’t that say something about French and Portuguese colonial history and the independence processes , Zimpaul?….I know that the West Africa states have a different history to Southern African states but Britain\Africa had a different approach to independence…the French, Portuguese and Belgians maintained control for much longer even going as far as making them departments in the case of the French….

…..also ‘in general’ Western Europeans are not racist either, UK probably least so…..the problem is the minority who definitely are…..

  502. Actually I usually never get into pissing contests with skunks, I usually just tear their heads off and toss the carcass away. I’m suprised at myself.

  503. I am kidding folks ….!!

  504. Alex Ice Cream

    Zimpaul,

I don’t recall AW ever puttting out a team of 10 black players. One game I remember was Leeds away when we smashed them 4-1 in 2002 when the whole team was black other than Cygan. Freddy (and Jens).

The fact it was at dirty racist Leeds made it all the sweeter, escpecially in the light of the Woodgate and Bowyer court case. Bowyer was playing also. Filthy, racist, c***.

  505. Aren’t skunks native to North America only ?

Maybe you have a different animal in mind, ZP ?

  506. Zimpaul…wonderful post and so true….while England has advanced somewat publically in their racial attitudes there does remain a element that choose to live in ignorance football unfortunately attracts more than your average…..

  507. I am nervous about the game tomorrow and our upcoming games. I am never optimistic. We’ve had so many crunch games in recent years, particularly last year, where we’ve been denied by god, injuries and the referee. This time it just has to be different, surely… please..

  508. Great post at 11.41 a.m. ZimPaul

  509. Alex Ice Cream

Pyles Malmer says that Clichy has a stress-fracture of a verterba and will be out for 4 weeks. These injuries usually take longer.

Let’s hope he is as wrong as he usually is.

  510. Zimpaul – you’re an african savage – that’s ok.

  511. AIC we were regulary playing 9 black players in the second double winning team…i remember a commentator saying that we have come a long way when people only look at a players talent not race…and as Arsene is famous for saying he looks at a player’s ability not PASSPORT!!

P.S QofS i wonder what would happen if i went to on LG and started a discussion on Arsenal Ladies and how successful they’ve been compared to the guys recently….lool…..

  512. ….didn’t have you down as anti-skunk, ZimPaul….well,well….

Americas, Indonesia….thats where skunks live…..strictly speaking the smell comes from the anal scent glands…..even bears won’t go near skunk the smell is so f*cking awful…interestingly Aardwark piss smells like a skunks bum…so you should not get involved in a pissing contest with an Aardwark…

  513. Maria that’s a great point, the ladies have been fantastic the last few years. I hear many are leaving to go to the USA where the game is massive and so are the wages.

  514. ps …does anybody really care what colour a player is as long as he plays with pride in the red and white!!

  515. Well, there it gets complicated Frank … most are agreed that British colonialism was the least damaging, French somewhere in the middle (being generous) and Belgians and Germans practiced genocide.

On the hand the portuguese are by far most assimilated in Africa, and the French look towards former African possessions as ‘greater france’.

It was easier for them to quickly understand African football.

It is perfectly true that British people tend to be less offensively racist, and even less so in the young generation. But the Brits who came to Africa did not really assimilate much, and were, shall we say … motivated by money.

Western Europeans are less racist these days. Not so East Europeans.

  516. I am always nervous before such games too Muppet – i think you are probably not human if you are not!

Tomorrow is really 50-50 – we have some injuries in defence, and they have not been that solid defensively.

If we can keep Drogba quiet – that will go a long way to giving us the upper hand..

And we have a fresh russian maestro to unleash… ;-)

  517. …nice one, Zimpaul…

  518. Alex Ice Cream

    Maria,

We weren’t regularly playing 9 black players in 2001-2.

    The team was usually:

    Jens

    Ralph Kolo Sol Cole
    Freddy Paddy Berto Bobby
    Terry Dennis

A maximum of 7. Wiltord played also so I am not sure if we ever had 8. Kanu played sporadically so I doubt very much if it was ever 9

    Pedantic perhaps but hey!

  519. Denilson stat:(according to the telegraph)
not in top 50 for goals

is sixth in assists (behind lampard, van persie, berbatov, malbranque and fabregas)

he is 5th in the category of fouls won(behind k.davies, gutierez and behrami)

he is 8th in terms of tackles won (behind cattermole, danny murphy, zuiverloon, s.petrov, behrami, parker and clichy)

  520. Alex Ice Cream

    Arshavin will hurt Chelsea tomorrow.

  521. who’s ralph?

  522. Don’t mention Drogba Matt. That makes me even more nervous, even though Senderos is in Milan.

  523. he is number 2 for total passes behind xabi alonso, but is number 1 in succesful passes

  524. ralph lauren Haha

  525. No Nick, it doesn’t matter what colour players are so long as they are our guys.

AIC, you are correct it is was 9 players and we gratuitously awarded one dark hued lad the colour black assuming he had some great great grandmother who perhaps fell out of the black family tree.

Did I say skunk Frank, I meant those hyeanas at LG.

  526. looooooool….7 or 9 still makes my point… anyhoo black or not they were great players…..double winners in fact…

  527. hehehe….but how is AIC right ZP??

  528. Tomorrow it’s Arshavin’s game …Sylvestre will look after Drogba

  529. Never posted before but read the post often.Whats the thing with LG?

  530. Matt,

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/create will let you set up a chalkboard for individual games. Then just choose the player and choose to show interceptions. I haven’t found somewhere that tabulates statistics for the season but I know it exists, just can’t remember where.

As for LG, what a bunch of useless wankers. No place, really, for their sort of commentary.

Massive game tomorrow, full confidence in the team no matter who trots out. They wear the colours of champions already, no need for anything else.

  531. Gris – I was interested in comparing it to other players over the season.

Thanks anyway the chalkboard thing is good for individual games.

  532. To tell the truth, this whole race angle to the conversation bothers me. I couldnt give a shit about race.

  533. Don;t mention Seneros with Drogba Muppet, you’re making me nervous

  534. To be fair it is a bit uncomfortable ole Gunner, I don’t see colour so it worries me when people bring it up suggests they have a problem with it.

  535. Tis true Ole Gunner … it was just anecdotal … but there is some history in there too …

  536. ….i know both recent wins over Chelsea were without DD in the side….

  537. Drogba will not be as effective for chealsea with no senderos to bully,I blame drogba for the lads demise he striped him of all confidence the swine

  538. Absolutely no problem Nick, seriously … just proud of Arsenal that’s all

  539. I tell you Sylvestre will deal with DD … ulp …

  540. well thats ok then zp

  541. still had no response on the problem with LG

  542. …..See guys that’s what carry conversation from that hell hole that is LG gets us…..

  543. There is no problem Nick… ;-)

  544. Well thats ok to :)

  545. L who?

  546. love grooves ?

  547. LG, the electronics brand. “Life’s Good”

    Ironic tagline, given its namesake!

  548. There is a conundrum tomorrow …

    Assuming RvP, Ade
    AA, Theo, Cesc

Does Song go mid or CB and Denilson mid?

I guess the former, and Den is on the bench

  549. Got to be Song….

LG stands for Lucky Goldstar – the electronics brand that is….

  550. I’ve given up since we started getting our attacking players back. There are so many options it makes my head spin.

Except Song may have to play at the back tomorrow.

  551. to be honest i like le grove theres some real characters on the blog that help pass the day

  552. Yep, it’s got to be Song …

I wondered about something … you know like in cricket these days there’s an army of analysts checking the exact style, weakness, trickery of every opposition player … has the same happened in football … I mean is Hiddink busy reading reports from his top R&D analysts

… in which case does AW try to double bluff him … as in ah he thinks we gonna play Song, so we’ll surpise him with Diaby and really mess up that little plan … etc etc

I mean how far is strategy determined by the backroom boys watching matches endlessly

  553. The other thing i would like to point out is the way you treated Kelsey was bang out of order he has his own views as do we all and some fella on here flew at him you say LG is clicky.

  554. I’m off – enjoy the game wherever you are watching it people. ;-)

  555. That new guy Spud? or Crud? or something on LG. I like him a lot, he seems smart.

  556. Sometimes there’s a bit of robust banter on this site which people take the wrong way …

It’s by far the funniest people though …

    Kelsey come back!

  557. …f*ck off Nick…

  558. Hello frank how are you ;)

  559. …very very well….looking forward to shoving it up Chelski tomorrow….

  560. “Kelsey” sounds like a 60s detective show … good name … as in … Kelsey and Curious Case of the Cursed Collector

  561. frank how you doing, witty entrance take the floor my friend ;)

  562. …only puffs are called Kelsey…

  563. I have a suspicion, Nick, that nobody cares what you consider out of order.

  564. well just as well then ;)

  565. …you got something in your eye, Nick?…

  566. I’m quite sure all clubs pay for opta stats, ZP.

And on ATVO you sometimes hear players talk about watching DVD’s of other teams, and of their own performances.

I think if we do have an in house analyst it would be Boro Primorac. Doesn’t he watch the game from the stands? Except he and AW don’t use headsets to communicate. That would be tacky.

  567. yer, but nice teeth frank :)

  568. …telepathy….the Arsenal way….class…

  569. Seems that way with our passing sometimes!

  570. Alex Ice Cream

    Nick,

Don’t worry about Frank. I think f*ck off is his way of expressing affection and admiration which is why he greets Howard in this way.

  571. …thats not actually me, Nick…

  572. Alex Ice Cream

We know it’s not you Frank. You are nowhere near as handsome in real life.

  573. ….good lord…

  574. …people do not like to look at the real me….

  575. 18 months of borderline racism have qualified Howard for the treatment he gets. Another year and he’ll be up for the mystery prize!

    That’s why he’s so dogged.

  576. …it frightens them…

  577. Football statistics is an interesting subject. Some statistics measure things undoubtedly good, some measure things undoubtedly bad, and other measure things indifferent, or at least ambiguous.

Goals scored are good. Goals conceded are bad, although it is hard to attribute them to a particular player.

What about passes? A stray pass is bad, because it gives the ball to the opposition; but a good pass should perhaps be considered indifferent, as it might or might not give an advantage to the team in possession. In which case, a player can be judged on the rate of success of his passes, but not on the total number of passes.

Tackles? They are the opposite of passes. A tackle wins possession, which must always be good; but a failed tackle is not necessarily bad, as it gives the opposition no advantage, and will probably slow them up. A player, then, should be judged by his number of successful tackles, but perhaps not so much by his rate of success at tackling.

I’m not sure these assessments are correct, but I am sure that statistics need to be treated with caution.

  578. to be fair statistics give a guide on a player not a true measure of ability imo

  579. Frank what your that ugly!!

  580. or to be pc physically challenged

  581. A profound comment there Nick.

  582. …no not ugly….frightening, Nick…

  583. :) glad you appreciated it

  584. Is Nick another Grover?

  585. Perhaps Groveller is a better term.

  586. spent some time there,is that a problem thought this was an arsenal blog? not anti LG

  587. …we all carry our burdens….Zimpaul is anti-skunk…but he doesn’t let it affect his judgement…..he has it under control….well I think he does anyway…just seems like that sort of guy…..

  588. Not necessarily a problem, but you grovellers tend to be birds of a feather.

  589. Skunk is an acquired taste frank!!!

  590. …does that mean several birds share one feather?….

  591. ….must be the Galapagos or a small island off New Zealand….no natural predators…so they only need one feather between em…..perhaps used it for tickling each other….sort of social ritual…maybe linked to mating…

  592. poliziano to be fair they make my laugh a lot and i like most on there thought id come and see what you fellas were like is all,QOS coming off there has boosted your hits i bet.

  593. Poliziano – Agree with you regarding stats. The problem is that they do not tell the whole story. A player might have very good passing stats but only ever make short or easy passes. A player like Cesc (Who gets good passing stats anyway) might make what is considered a poor pass because it it intercepted by the opposition but it was a defence splitting pass that fell just short. Out of 5 of these he could get an assist and create the winning goal.

It all comes down to the fact that you can put any spin on stats that you want and lets face it I don’t trust the media to put a positive spin on anything Arsenal (With a few exceptions).

  594. f*ck off, Nick..

  595. bollocks frank you feck off

  596. …not sure those numbers are statistics at all….just raw data….or is there no difference??

  597. A gaggle of grovellers with but a feather to conceal their shame. Horrible!

  598. …oh dear oh dear oh dear…

  599. They make your laugh a lot what? Louder? Deeper? Rarer?

  600. …this feck thing…is it Irish?….if you haven’t got one are you considered to be feckless?….

  601. to be fair you boys seem more clicky then LG, I didn’t even know who or what this blog was about till qos came here so all this about small minded self righteous pricks maybe a mirror should be consulted if you get my drift :)

  602. more then you POLIZIANO

  603. Robin Van Persie….clickclickclick….Robin Van Persie….clickclickclick….

    …yep I am definitely clicky….

…How did you know QoS came here, Nicky boy…

  604. frank feck is irish for fuck use t as it is less offensive

  605. Why are you always so fair, Nick?

“So all this about small minded self righteous pricks maybe a mirror should be consulted if you get my drift.”

No, I don’t get your drift. Is that English?

  606. Hello All, Am I allowed to be here, I post on both Avenell Road and Le Grove…. But I post because I love Arsnenal ;)

  607. No Pz and 1OU, I mean more than statistics …. I mean detailed exhaustive analysis, this player will tend to pass in this way, these two players will tend to combine like this, the keeper will tend to move like that …

I guess it hasn’t yet reached the levels in cricket where even a small side – say New Zealand – will have a back-up of perhaps 3 or 4 analysts. The Aussies go to the extent of researching every opposition player and their background, I kid not

And then the players are shown clips, lots of footage, look how he plays legside … whatever

Frank, I have only recently been out’ed as a viciously anti-skunk … yes, hmmm, it’s the new me. Those skunks are punks I say.

  608. Anyone with access to ATVO should go and check out the pre-Chelski interviews with RVP and Ade. There are some very insightful comments there.

  609. Sorry, ZimPaul. That was just a general comment about statistics in football. I wasn’t responding to your post.

  610. ….feck is in fact Scottish and it means ‘effect’ it seems…..so have feck means to be effective…..feckless is to be incompetent or lazy or ineffective….fuckless on the other hand..oh sorry I didn’t mean hand er…I …well…you know

  611. ACLF is being over run…someone needs to put to it…..

  612. I take it you mean me Maria :(

  613. basically you said T H A T Le Grove were small minded and if you aint in there gang you get fecked off for not following the company line.
They do not care about the fact we are all Arsenal fans care more about there blog. what do you boys do

  614. I’m quite sure it happens but probably to a lesser extent. Remember the ManU player, Foster in CC final. He watched footage of Spuds players on his ipod before the shootout.

  615. No, it’s no good. I just can’t understand the language on here any more.

  616. …I said no such thing…I have never visited Le Grove…

  617. Nick – is your comment for me ?? I dont recall saying any of what you have written

  618. Jeez, I just cannot type quickly!

  619. All lovers of Arsenal are welcome, rico.

  620. Nick, sorry, just realised that your last was for another blogger..

    Thats good Poliziano :P

  621. Alert, alert …. whoop … whoop … whoop (those are sirens) …

Reinforcements, calling all rasers, bring sharp pointed weapons, get the skunk-traps out, poison the bait …… we need ammo fast …

… forward units of a massive skunk attack have forced through the battlements ….

They are using feck lasers, extreme wit, and clever football comments …

  622. polizano your a prick and blog is shit,Rico no it was not at you it was for these small minded bellends.
Im gonna put the rock down, in case any of you crawl out. you all take care.
Frank your the only amusing one on here :)

  623. I get the feeling this chap was spoiling for a fight.

  624. oneofus–drop me out, no i wasn’t i was just sampling another blog. if you care to check ive been here all day and have i been angling for an argument no, a selection on here are the small minded not me

  625. Don’t upset him, or he’ll call you a prick.

  626. no rica01 i just don’t understand who this Nick is and why his still here…..can he just **** off…..his a small man that needs to be ingored…we are seriously BORED…with more important things to debate like a semi-final tomorrow and a defence that is in disarray….

  627. don’t mean to be a pessimist

but tomorrow is a massive test for a back 5 of :

    fabianski

    eboue toure song silvestre

  628. hopefully gibbs passes fitness test and he plays LB and silvestre goes into CB

that seems to have a better balance to it

  629. Hi Rico! Nice to see you.

Blimey, I think I’ve had more mentions than Arsene Wenger on Arsenal blogs this week!

Its nice to see some of the better posters from Le-Grove on here, hopefully once the silly “where are you from” stuff has died out, they’ll be afforded the opportunity to see and understand that ACLF isn’t a cult but instead is a place for reasoned Arsenal debate without the hyperbole of some other sites.

  630. “Never posted before but read the post often.Whats the thing with LG?”

“still had no response on the problem with LG”

  631. Nick, Nick, what a prick… i’m guessing you’re:
    a) single
    b) ugly
    c) a virgin

And that’s just for starters you stupid ignorant, ugly, tosser.

Go away, pick up your copy of FHM and play with yourself.

  632. Surely Nick isn’t one of the better posters. Is he?

  633. rev now thats funny

  634. I don’t really know Nick all that well, PZ…Rico on the other hand is a lady.

So anyone think we get get to see some newish faces on the bench tomorrow in defensive positions?

  635. COMMON GUNNERS

We are gonna do fine tomorrow …

    Welcome all ….

  636. Alex Ice Cream

    Guys,

We have the FA Cup Semi tomorrow why all the bickering?

I am more concerned by our defence than any of the above.

  637. Who is there, QoS. Most of them are on loan.

  638. Thanks AIC…i have said that atleast twice……so what are your feelings on sagna out and gibbs..?

  639. Hi Rico !!!

  640. “Captaining Arsenal is the best thing that ever happened to me and everyday I dream of lifting a trophy for the club” – Cesc Fabregas.

  641. …Passenal, thanks…those interviews were superb…..these guys are really bright, switched on and totally team oriented….

  642. I think we have good in-form options in all of the positions AIC.

Eboue was excellent midweek as was Silvestre. Song is in the form of his life and Kolo bleeds Arsenal.

I’m confident we’ll have too much firepower for them. If they stop Ade we’ve still got AA and Fabregas and Nasri and RVP.

  643. Silvestre
    Song
    Toure
    Eboue

I think that back four is definitely up to the task. Song played CB at the ACN and took the tournament by storm. Silvestre’s a solid full-back, as is Eboue. Nothing to fear!

  644. Nordvedt? I thought he was back in the fold or did he go out on loan again?

I like the look of the little right back/DM who’s name escapes me…

For sure Rambo will be on the bench and he’s very versatile.

  645. …..so have we agreed on Diaby to take Song’s place if he moves into defence?

  646. We will stick with the team that took out VR … cepting AA …

Diaby might come on earlyish, he may even start if song goes CB … to sort DD

which would be my choice, and Gibbs at LB, Sylvestre is a little slow for LB

We will play beautifully, a big midfield battle, we might play 4-5-1 but that would leave RvP, no can’t do that …

Cesc is up for this … Ade too.

Watch out for AA … the assassin

  647. ….this squad have learned to deal with adversity…confidence is high….and they play as a unit…whoever plays…I am so f*cking proud of them….we will be fine tomorrow…..absolutely fine….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  648. ….you might need AWs permission to do that, Maria…

  649. I’m unsure Maria? Are you thinking Cesc and Diaby sharing defensive and attacking duties?

Personally i like to see Diaby higher up the pitch because his quick feet and ability to beat a man frighten the oppostion.

I think we might see Denilson with the instruction to mark Lampard out of the game!

  650. Now we’re talking Poliziano:

About passing….I think total number of passes and pass completion rate are never indifferent stats. It means that a player allows the team to keep possession. Possession is not everything in football, but it’s 60% of the work. Over the course of a season you’ll struggle to find a team that always has less possession than the opponent but still wins a league.

Tackling: I think the total number of tackes tells us how defensively minded a player is. If he makes a lot of tackles then he’s defensive minded. The number of tackles he wins in absolute numbers and his percentage success rate are one and the same thing. They measure how often he contributes to stopping the opposition.

Interceptions: The number of interceptions count because they show, how well the player reads the game. It also shows how much he contributes to stopping the opponent.

Some stats that dont get measured often but should:

    1. Attack creating Turnovers: How many times that a player loses the ball for whatever reason that ends up in a shot on goal. The converse of that is how many times the player wins the ball for whatever reason that ends up in a shot on goal.

    2. Dangerous situations: How many dangerous situations are created/or suffered in a game per team and per player.

  651. Nordtveit is at Lillestrom.

  652. …you can’t fatten a pig by weighing it, OG…

  653. Nordveit is on loan back in Norway.

I think Arsene is right, we might be short on numbers but not quality. Eboue, Toure, Song/Silvestre or Gibbs will manage, especially with the rest of the team supporting them. We will win if we play as a team and everyone does his part.

Remember – NO FEAR! Think positive and positive things will happen

  654. As things stand, we’re fine at the back; but it will be hard to accomodate another injury.

  655. I like the succesful passes stat rather than the overall number of passes. It shows a strong propensity to keep the ball.

If we’ve got the ball its hard for our opponents to score against us.

Interceptions I use to interpret how well a player “reads the game”. To intercept the ball, you have to understand where its going to be.

  656. Pat Rice is still quite able, i’m told.

  657. OneOfUs – Song played central midfield in the African Cup of Nations.

  658. Could have sworn it was otherwise. He was definitely at centre-half in the Olympics, wasn’t he?

  659. …goodness me, have you seen Pat Rice in the warm ups, QoS…he runs like Mack Sennett……you could get a train between his legs these days….maybe even Frank lampard….

  660. Alex Ice Cream

    Maria,

We do have an option is Gibbs isn’t fit which is Silvestre at LB and Song CB but Song has been great in midfield lately so it would be good to keep him there. He also did a good job on Esien in the ACN last year. CB is also Silvestre’s best position.

    Let’s hope Gibbs is fit.

  661. I don’t care who slots in for who at the back, this team will pass circles around chel$ki, who will be forced onto route 1 and dead balls in order to generate anything. My line up for a win:

    Arsenal
    Arsenal – Arsenal – Arsenal – Arsenal

    Arsenal – Arsenal – Arsenal – Arsenal

    Arsenal – Arsenal

Subs: Arsenal in for Arsenal at 60 minutes.

F#ck chel$ski, drogba, fat frank, and the others.

    NO FEAR!

  662. Forced onto route one? Last time I looked, no force was required to make Chelsea play route one.

  663. hehe..point taken frank….am not sure Denilson about marking Lampard QofS i don’t think his a man marker more important i think is to keep Essein confused with no one individual to mark….hencewe need RVP playing….with Ade, Theo, AA, Cesc and RVP Essien will be overwhelmed forcing Lampard deeper…which ever one plays Den or Abou i think we will win…i am yet to be convinced by Kalou or Malouda….Arshavin and Theo on the other had..damnnnn…also hope Diaby karate kicks both DD and Terry early doors…lool…

  664. LOL, good one Poliziano! Touche, you have me there.

  665. Alex Ice Cream

I thought force was required to prevent Chelsea from playing route one football.

  666. Poliziano, I’ll certainly be praying for no more defensive injuries or we’ll be drafting in the under 18′s!

  667. and our under 18′s will still play the pants off chel$ski!

  668. ….bloody chavs has me sweating…..

  669. …….am off to watch desperate housewives till tomorrow…….

  670. ..

  671. Have those nasty people from LG gone now ?

    LOL

  672. Mostly it looks they’ve gone back to complain about this blog!

Were people rude to kelsey? He seems to think so, that’s a shame because i think he’s generally a good poster, its a shame if he got that impression.

Nick on the other hand was seeking to wind-up sadly.

  673. He only succeeded in winding himself up.

  674. Is it safe for me to come on here QoS? ….. I don’t think smiley faces work on this site……

  675. watching ManC play Germans last night (was it live or re-run I have no idea) it was a such scrappy game … talking stats, I think it read passes completed 9%, ball in the air bobbing around and confusing us all 110%

  676. oh rasputin they do

    ~

um that’s a smile kind of if you think about it

  677. I don’t think anyone was rude to kelsey, they seem not to appreciate the sense of humour on this site

  678. Hi Rasputin!

Pretty soon – i’m going to start asking Yogi for a finders fee for new posters!

    Smiles work :-) !

  679. Hi Zim – looks like you go to the same dentist as me!

Very clever – how did they know I look like that?

  680. Damn work. Just made it back to ACLF.
Feck, the LeGrovellers are unhappy losing one of the best Arsenal minds, that’s you QofS, and come trawling this web-site spoiling for a fight.
God job Frank, Passenal, One-of-Us, G4E, Pz, Consols, ZP, and even you Matt. Chased those crazy bald-heads out of town.
BTW: Where is my yute, Paul N?

  681. Did I miss out on Gris-Gris among the chasing posse?

  682. To be fair shotta-gunna. I think they are glad to see the back of me!

    Thankyou for the complement though.

  683. you should see my nose, it got ‘broke’ a while back … well 35 years back it looks like &

    otherwise I’m incredibly handsome

  684. Be a shame to chase everyone off. People like Rico and Rasputin are a credit to Arsenal and this blog would be enriched by their views.

Even Keyser who many didn’t seem to take to is a very knowledgable Arsenal fan and probably holds the record for yellow cards from Geoff!

  685. Thanks QoS :)

unfortunately my work is too busy to be a prolific ‘poster’. I’m off work today so trawling around as part of my pre-important match ritual. What did you think of the EE / Theo partnership in the first half against VR. I loved it htat we all stayed behind to applaud Bobby. We never really had a chance to say goodbye – he had an excellent game too I thought.

  686. I thought Eboue was a revelation Rasp. I like him attacking from deeper than from a RW (ish) position. Theo is just going from strength to strength, defenders are terrified of him. That was the European Champions number one full back he was destroying out there.

I can’t wait to see him Chelski apart tomorrow!

  687. No one is chased off, but some are quite rude

it’s best to greet people nicely and start on the positive

  688. Yea QoS – Theo v’s Cashley….priceless. I wonder how many fouls he’ll get away with when The skins him before the ref gives him a yellow?

  689. QoS, you must have a very well behaved baby as you are still managing to find time to hang out with us on here.

  690. It amuses me greatly to hear Poliziano described as “my fella” by Nick at LG today.

It sort of illustrates how easy it is to misunderstand somethingwritten in a blog.

  691. Breastfeeding and typing one handed Passenal but yes he’s an angel!

He’s even sleeping most of the night!

  692. Why is Nick even talking about me?

  693. I don’t remember a Keister on here today.

  694. Curiously, our options are greater than you might imagine should neither Clichy or Gibbs be available:

Eboue has some experience at Left back when he had the season of the missing left back in 2006 that ended up with Flamini finally breaking into the side.

Whilst Toure has some experience at right back.

Song can play centre back (as we have seen) & Sly can play at centre and left back.

Conceivably, with his work rate, Denilson could make a make shift full back.

We’ve also got some pretty decent defenders out on loan and I don’t know whether there is any clause in their contracts that can allow us to recall them should such a situation as this arise.

Any one for recalling Senderos? :)

  695. Sorry, thats unavailable.

  696. I don’t think I’ve ever been talked about before. This is an honour. My five minutes of fame.

  697. Any one remember that debut goal by Reyes against Chelsea in the cup?

    What a goal!

  698. I also think that Denilson could fill in at full-back, should the worst happen.

  699. Hi QoS – how you doing, now where are those denilson stats ;)

  700. Poliziano, if you think of the qualities he possess he definately has the talent to fill in. His work rate is second to none and he has reasonably good pace and can tackle. Just like Flamini is he also quite tactically aware so can see the danger. If he plays just behind Arshavin then he should sufficient support.

  701. Yeah, I think it’s likely Denilson would be moved to full-back, although it is highly unlikely that a fourth full-back will get injured.

  702. If I were the manager I might consider a 4 – 5 – 1
for Saturday with Denilson filling in at left back Eboue reprising his role as right back.

  703. Having problems with my internet! Its updating way to slowly.

  704. Denilson at Full Back ???

I would play Diaby there before him, and that would be a daft choice.. Denilson is not strong enough, he is pushed off the ball too much to ever be considered a defender…

Oh – In my mere humble opinion ;)

  705. Eboue Kolo Song Silvestre – that should be our defence if Gibbs and Sagna dont recover… Somrthing tells me though that JD will be fit..

  706. Whats happening with the defense?? Have chavsea got any bloody injuries?? i still feel we have to much firepower for them though.

  707. erm..i cant fukin spell.

  708. I agree with rico01 @ 7:07

I don’t agree with rico01 @ 7:06 though ! I don’t think Diaby’s control is anywhere near as good as Denilson, and putting him on the edge of the box would be suicide. Additionally, I take the point about Denilson not being the strongest, but on the other hand, I believe Denilson is getting stronger all the time.

DukeGoonem – we’ve just been unlucky with injuries. For once it’s not the midfield or attack.

  709. Whats all this about Denilson as fullback?? who came out with that one…mind you would anyone play that frenchman who went to italy there?? only he played well there….nah f*ck it i cant see denilson playing there.

  710. With all due respect, you people need to learn to read. The question is: If we run out of fit defenders, who should play at full-back?

  711. Poliziano,

    are you talking to me???

  712. QoS: I wasn’t chasing anyone meself but those who came itching for a fight rather than to advance the cause of our great club, were not treated hospitably. Quite rightly. Franchise I am looking at you.

  713. With all due respect Poliziano..i have a newborn in the house and me wife cant get outa bed so sorry if i cant read all the comments.

  714. One man doesn’t constitute a people, DukeGoonem. Nobody has to read every (or indeed any) post; but before treating a suggestion with complete contempt, it is perhaps good to learn the circumstances of the suggestion.

  715. Again, I am addressing whoever feels himself (or herself) guilty, not any particular person.

  716. Denilson is slightly taller than Sagna, and slightly shorter than Gibbs and Clichy. I don’t suppose he is significantly weaker than those three. In any case, when a player has to play out of position, it is inevitable he will fall short (no pun intended) in one or two particulars, but that cannot disqualify him from the role, unless a position is simply to go vacant.

  717. guilty?? of what.

just had a read back now and it seems you are still a tad angry Poliziano!

  718. I’m just playing, Duke. Please don’t worry.

  719. Anyone else mad that we don’t have a world class CB at 5th choice. Wenger really messed up there.

  720. Anyone else mad that we don’t have a world class CB at 5th choice? Wenger really messed up there.

  721. I’m seeing double…4 posts!

  722. I’m totally pissed off about it OneOfUs. He’s f*cked up bigtime.

  723. You know what really gets me… our sixth choice is probably some kid nobody’s ever heard of. The experiment isn’t working! Who’s going to stop him?

  724. I know that this off-topic, but Ferguson’s and Allardyce’s ‘organized’ attack on Benitez shows how Ferguson will resort to any tactic-fair or foul-to gain an advantage. It’s become clear that in order to win the league you don’t just have to be as good as man-yoo, you have to be significantly better. This is because of numerous ways that Ferguson utilises the dark arts for his teams own advantage. First, the officials: referee’s-as we know- are psychotically lenient with man-yoo players. Why is this? Because referees know that when they give an unfavourable decision against man-yoo, Ferguson nearly always responds with a sulphourous attack towards them-about their professionalism, their neutrality, their allegiances. Faced with the prospect of this type of sulphorous attack, referees opt for a quiet life and don’t inforce the law properly. This is why so few penalities are given against united, why so few red cards are given to united players, why Ronaldo can kick-out at other players without being sent off. This is why I hate Man utd more than any other team.

  725. What excitement. I had a wall to build but they kept it up after an early start didn’t they?

If those are the best of LG Queenie, then they have a lot more to show than I read today. Pz is way out of their league to name but one. No one gets Frank do they? Apart from us I mean.

ZP, what’s all this about being nice to newcomers? You were up there punching!

Stats are a very good thing as my own eyes. But lastly knowing from my playing days, its about fulfilling your managers commands and tactics.

If AW trust a player by selecting him who am I to criticize this player.

And anyway I would not want Hangeland and this Evertonmuppet Fellani.

I want players who can play football the Arsenal way

  751. Reminder : anyone lucky enough to be going to Wembley tomorrow, please wear the colours….. we need a sea of red and white in our half of the stadium …….

    Come On Arsenal.

  752. G4E, Poliziano, Steve and others

Denilson is not ready. I’ve had the patience to watch him all season and he falls short. He’s had changes because no one was there for us, but now it’s really going to be difficult for him.

Brazil don’t rate him. Brazil prefers Lucas and Anderson to him, why? Not good enough. He’s going to spend a real long time on the bench now because Arsene knows his weaknesses and who’s better.

I haven’t changed my mind on Almunia and I know Fabianski will replace him soon. Fabianski is going to do so well that it will really be difficult for Arsene to bring back Almunia if he recovers.

It’s over for the so-called no. 1 GK as well.

    We win 2:0 against Chelsea.

  753. There’s no time for some things now. They don’t even penetrate consciousness. It’s as if they didn’t exist. All attention is on winning.

  754. Chelsea isn’t just the Chelsea players, or the Chelsea coaches, or the Chelsea fans. Chelsea is everything that contributes to Chelsea winning, even things that falsely march under the Arsenal banner. Chelsea is the enemy. Everything Chelsea is nothing, to be destroyed without compunction. Their words might as well be in a foreign tongue. They are meaningless.

  755. Howard
    AW rates him
Are You saying You don’t rate AW or….
Almunia at this point is better than Cech…
So who is the best keeper in the world?

  756. The word howard means nothing. No Arsenal player is called howard. It is a mere sound.

  757. I don’t rate Howard. I’ve had the patience to read his posts all season, and he falls short.

  758. Average men, sub-average men, are ruled constantly by the petty demands of their own egos. Superior men – our players – put their egos aside, and focus on their team, and on winning. The drone of sub-average egos is incomprehensible to them. Their brains filter it out, as if it didn’t exist. The sound becomes nothing, just as the source of the sound is nothing.

  759. Kaalhoveddk – I wouldn’t waste my time on Howard, now is the time for all RASERS to get behind the team. No time for carping. Any player who turns out on that pitch wearing the red & white of Arsenal should have 100% unconditional support from us. These boys are ready to become men and they need us. Even those of us who won’t be at Wembley need to be sending the positive vibes from wherever we are in the world. Your Club needs you!

  760. Wenger has described how His players are so focused on the game that they can play in a tempest and yet be ignorant of the rain. How much more ignorant must they be of the dull drone of mediocre men, who are worth infinitely less than the rain?

  761. Howard…you’re not ready to make a fair assessment about Denilson….So, F*ck Off.

And now beat it to one of the stupid Spud sites.

  762. “Brazil don’t rate him. Brazil prefers Lucas and Anderson to him, why? Not good enough. He’s going to spend a real long time on the bench now because Arsene knows his weaknesses and who’s better.”

You trying to be smart Howard? if Denilson stays on the bench for a while, it will be because AW wants to rest him…. But, you want to use this so you can say “I told you so” he’s not playing because he’s not good enough.

You deserve a second F*ck Off for this one.

  763. I’m behind of course
    and nervous
But You know two years ago my season finished in February.
This time we are still at it.
    My gott AW knows
And I stand by him and his team.

  764. Don’t worry, G4E. The sub-average man cannot hide from himself. Reality itself shouts F*ck Off at him every second of the day.

  765. That’s true Poliziano..He doesn’t realize by him repeating himself like that, he appears to have a below average mind….Look in the mirror before saying that to Denilson Hawie

  766. What’s up with that shit Wembley pitch Wenger is not happy with it. it cuts up like a pancake. They spent billion why can’t they get a decent pitch. did They get it from B&Q? It will suit the horses from Chelsea.
The back line tomorrow looks physically strong- Eboue -Toure Song- Silvesta they might be what we need to stop Drogba and Fat frank.

  767. …Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa aalll…Arsenal. Arsenal, Arsenal…Arsenal….ARSENAL….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  768. Heeeelllooooo….you people east of GMT…nightshift for me…most of us around the Wemberlee area have been up for the last 18 hours…. America…helllloooo….anyone in???

    …oh ffs

    ..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal,Arsenal, Arsenaa aal…Arsenal , Arsenal, Arsenal …Atraenal…ARSENAL

  769. …oh dear, oh dear ,oh dear…

  770. …bye,bye..

  771. …Arsenal support is a bit of a joke really isn’t it?….thankfully the squad have learned not to depend upon it….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL….

…Arsenal will win the FA Cup, ECL and will be 2nd or 3d in the Prem….

  772. …the day of the semifinal…all alone…you know I am tired of this…f*ck you all….

  773. Frank – You seem a little lonely, maybe a little disturbed. They say there is a fine line between genius and madness, I just hope that you are on the right side with your predictions.

  774. Hey Frank

    AFRICA CALLING

    C’MON GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  775. Good morning ZimPaul,
As you have just posted on LG with a partial reference to me,let’s get one thing clear, please. There was no organised attack by anyone who came onto this site yesterday, from those of us who also post on LG.
You say you are decent people on here, but first impressions by some, say otherwise.I was called a w*nker and a puff, and basically a liar,by one or two on here.
QOS,also posts on LG,or used to,and is obviously held in high esteem on here, and generally speaking she has indicated that in her eyes some of us are decent people.she pressed me on a question about certain players and I gave an honest opinion.yet still the abuse followed,so I decided best to step back.

I or no one else who posts on LG always agree with the authors, and that can lead to a debate or an arguement, sometimes. So kindly don’t judge people just because they post on another site.

Here is a question to you or anyone else. Will Gibbs be risked today if not 1005 fit,and secondly can you name me a recognised defender who may be on the bench, because i can’t.

At the end of the day the childish remarks came from your contributers, read back for yourself, but lets unite today and hopefully give chelsea a beating,in which i believe will be a tight game.

  776. Hey Kelsey,
Good on ya … C’mon of Gunners!!

I guess it all depends on late fitness test this morning for Gibbs, there is talk of Sagna to LB which would solve matters and Song is effectively the back-up defender.

I hear Bosingwa is having a late fitness test, is that right, and Sylvestre will struggle for pace on the flank

So, Yep, we have a problem if Sagna cannot play … I wonder if Denilson would be risked at the back …probably not

  777. I’m ridiculously excited!!! I just wish I wasn’t having to confront the prospect of Drogba terrorising Deputy Song all match long. Song has been fantastic recently and I’m sure he’ll give it everything, but I see Drogba as a sort of nemesis for us and I’m filled with dread when he plays us at the best of times!

Why do we seem particularly ill-starred when it comes to injuries? They seem to come in clusters both in terms of time and positions affected.

I would feel much more comfortable with Sylvestre in the centre, although Drogba can be a nightmare for anyone on his day. With any luck Gibbs or Sagna will be ok to play.

On the whole though, I think the way we have been playing should see us dominate possession and tear them to shreds, we just need to take our chances and limit theirs.

I think it’s high time we returned to being Chelsea’s nemesis. It wasnt so long ago that triumph against Chelsea was an almost inevitable part of being Arsenal, and if anybody deserves a regular tonking from us, it’s that odious team.

Come on boys, do us proud! What a week to be a Gooner!

  778. A Cultured Left Foot is becoming a Drogba fan site.

  779. …Morning, ZimPaul…..Morning Kelsey ….you puff…..Morning GodsP45

…I have just set up the stall…..popped into a brilliant internet cafe in Wembley for a sausage sandwich and a cup of tea…..heading off to do an experiment in a minute…

…during last night’s midnight vigil it occurred to me that we could set up a circle of support between the five continents…through the night…doesn’t matter we can do it for the final….tell you about the experiment later…..

…what a great day in London…the arch looks wonderful in the sunshine….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  780. …oh and morning, Pz…what a star you are….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  781. Wem-ballie …

    Arsenal …

Drogba is far from the striking force of 2-3 years back and will be handled by Kolo, Syl, Song

More worrying is that Hiddink is talking up respect to Wenger and Arsenal … and he will take nothing for granted …

  782. ….morning, Marc…..sorry didn’t see your post….nope…I wasn’t lonely…we were having a semifinal party in Lady Neena’s paddock…..she is very uncomfortable and can’t sleep at the moment….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  783. I would say Cesc is almost back to 100% is raring to go and exciting and that is a scary proposition for Chelsea

  784. ….Kelsey is definitely a puffs name though….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  785. AW says Diaby is 100%, fully fit … I wonder if he will start … Edu is fit “but short”

  786. …..I think that Eduardo’s shortness is an advantage….low centre of gravity…..

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  787. Hey Frank … mornin’ my friend

    It’s our day

  788. yep, that’s what I thought

  789. Like I said before, they seem to be sensitive souls on LG. I just cannot see that the very mild ragging that kelsey has had justifies his ire.

Plus of course, I do not agree that Song, Denilson, Ade, Vela and Bendtner are not ‘Arsena” players.

Who cares for such ensitivities when the day holds such challenge, such promise.

I don’t really understand this fear of Drogba that some seem to have. He is only one man and often a bit girly with it. My apologies for that statement to all the women amongst us.

I would guess that one of Sagna or Gibbs will play allowing Silvestre to stay at CB.

They will have no answere to AA or the pace of Walcott. I’ll take ade over Drogba at this tipping point in both their careers. One is hgeading up, the other down. The same for their respective teams.

    ARSENAL!ARSENAL!ARSENAL!

  790. Kelsey,
    Yesterday, you said:

“It’s my opinion that Song and Denilson weren’t good enough for a side aiming to win trophies.”

Ignoring the confusion of tenses, which I assume is the result of typing errors, that statement is a lie. Arsenal are in fact in the semi-finals of two major competitions. Not only are they aiming for trophies; they are on the verge of winning them. Denilson, I believe, has this season been involved more than any other player. Prefixing a statement with “it’s my opinion” cannot turn a lie into truth, or into anything other than a lie.

  791. I’ve certainly never thought of myself a a fan of Drogba! I find him the most hateful of Chelsea’s extensive collection of hateful players.

It’s just a shame that he seems to be returning to form at this moment and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him con the ref with his crumpling at the slightest touch. Anyway, no more will I speak of that man.

Yes, it will be a treat to see AA in action again and on such a huge stage. He must have been so frustrated being cup-tied. That along with the Russian connection could set the stage for his most stellar Arsenal performance yet.

  792. Morning all! The sun is shining, it’s a great day to be a gooner. We really need to get past this fear of the drog and today is the day to silence him once and for all!

  793. Many others have said this, but:

Chelsea have a lot more to fear from us than we have to fear from them.

  794. I thought Old Red Noses’ attack on Benitez for showing disrespect to his brown nosed acolyte, Fat Sam, was interesting.

While I am sure that he wants an opportunity to get under Benitez’s skin, can it be a coincidence that another member of the Fat Sam camp, Breakdown, claims that Arsene showed him ‘disrespect’?

No. I think this is an attempt to raise the ‘respect issue’ to another level with the FA, presumably, due to adjudicate on the matter. I can just see Breakdown and Fat Sam rubbing their hands as their Champion enters the lists.

  795. Basically, some (I now think a minority) of Arsenal supporters have managed to convince themselves – under the influence of media – that a contingent of stalwart young Arsenal players are not as able as their ‘older and established’ counterparts at ‘big clubs’ … it’s a kind of inferiority complex.

AW has fought to overcome this with belief and respect, and no little spirit.

Later, all Arsenal supporters will come to appreciate the immense achievement and skills in this team, personified by Denilson, Song, Diaby, Eboue and Ade as well as the recognised players Cesc, AA, Theo, RvP, Kolo etc …

There will be set-backs and each one pounced upon by the cynics, but this won’t change the direction. AW, normally cautious, is already amazed by the spirit, energy and skill unleashed.

Today is not ‘make or break’ as blogs would have us think, it is just a step on the road.

    C’MON GUNNERS

  796. Also sickening was the piece by Henry Winter in the DT today. He basically says that Arsene is now ‘back in credit’. That Song and Denilson have improved immeasureably. He is a ‘renaisance man’. Some, says Winter, doubted Wenger’s transfer policy and predicted that he would be sacked.

The inference is that Winter was never one of those poor fools who failed to appreciate Arsene’s genius. He writes as a ‘respected’ journalist for a ‘quality’ newspaper.

He is a liar. I have read his pieces attempting to undermine our club. I have seen and heard him on TV dismissing us with casual disdain. He is also guilty of the undbelievably ‘soapy’ piece last week on St Stevie and the scouse ‘family’.

F*ck off Winter along with the rest of your revisionist colleagues who now want to share in the glory of our great club. F*ck right off.

  797. ….ZimPaul, ConsolsBob…popped back down the tunnel to let you know that there is another post….both comments are brilliant…post them again….on todays blog….please….
