Stand And Deliver: Villarreal (H) Preview

So this is it. A winnable match, a test of nerve, all with a makeshift defence. The makings of a nailbiter then. Arsene said in the build-up that the team would not be sitting back and seeking a goalless draw because it is not their natural game. Had he been able to field his strongest XI, I suspect that Wenger would change his view. However, that is not the case and it is difficult to find fault with his rationale.

The crucial thing tonight is that the team cannot afford to be as lacklustre in the first half as they were in the first leg and at Wigan last weekend. The absence of Marcos Senna will help overcome that to a certain extent with Fabregas finding more space, in theory at least. Yesterday, Wenger noted that the 4-2-3-1 formation is unlikely to continue on a long-term basis. More than anything, it seems that he is struggling to come to a formation that allows all of his creative and striking options to be on the field at the same time. I have a suspicion that tonight will see a more orthodox 4-4-2 in operation at the start with Denilson making way for Fabregas tro drop deeper. It is a position that brings the best from the Spaniard, more able to influence the game as a whole, not simply the creative side.

The absence of Gallas and Clichy leaves Wenger in a quandry. He could move Silvestre to the left in place of Gibbs with Song dropping back into defence. Whilst the Cameroonian can play there and has done so on numerous occasions, he has been an effective midfielder, coming into his own since the Cardiff FA Cup tie, winning over some of the doubters in the process.

Gibbs was nervy on Saturday, hardly surprising since he was making his first start in the Premier League. That will stand him in good stead for tonight yet he will have to step up a gear from the performance also. Villarreal are not scared of attacking, thankfully, their defending is not of the highest quality as compensation.

Abou Diaby and Eduardo are in the squad, adding depth to the bench. I would be surprised if either started, especially Eduardo since he has had a faltering time with his fitness.

The line-up I expect Wenger to go with is:

Fabianski, Sagna, Toure, Silvestre, Gibbs, Walcott, Fabregas, Song, Nasri, van Persie, Adebayor

There is enough ability in there to crush the Spaniards but I do not think that will happen. Keeping a clean sheet would be a good confidence booster but even conceding the first goal ought not to be a signal for panic stations unless there is a ridiculously short time left to play.

Wenger observed that the week’s such as these are those that he thrives on and that the season could be the best ever. Well, there is a very big ‘if’ involved in that and means getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s reach the semi-finals first and then the FA Cup Final.

Finally, I would urge everyone to back Wenger‘s call yesterday:

I would want an intimidating atmosphere and I count on our supporters to be strongly behind the team in a fair way. I am convinced our fans will do that tomorrow.

It should be the least that we can do. Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Get your singing game on gooners!! I wanna hear a roar louder than anything those VR players have ever heard in Spain!!!

  2. COME ON GUNNERS ….!!!!!!
    AFRICA LOVES YOU!!

    do you hear that???

    Maria …

  3. Nice one Maria.
Tonights the night we need our twelfth man…err and woman.

  4. Heeey berg good to see you here its just like insider just without James….lol

  5. Hey zimpaul any feelings on new African players that AW may have a eye on any other song’s lurking about??

  6. Yeah Maria…but for how long? LoL!

Yogi – The line up looks about right apart from Almunia, I thought he was still injured.

  7. I think the Song CB formation would make me less nervous. However, we are THE ARSENAL.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

    Lets F***ing ave it

  8. See that’s why we need you here Berg always eagle eyed!!

  9. brdgunner – know what you mean Tweety Pie does not not inspire much confidence though he does have experience and if he nets one again tonight he’ll deserve some humble praise.

  10. Bring ‘em on! Aready got my deakchairs in front of the television thingy. Anyone know how it works?

  11. YW, can’t agree with u more on the tactics being different if we had the strongest team available, which is not to say that we would park the bus, this team is not built for it. But if we had the regular back 5 & probably Song playing in front of them we could have played our usual patient passing game with plenty of possession & confidence.

Nevertheless about tonight’s game, though Villareal started the 1st leg well, we made a very nervy start which magnified Villareal’s performance. Hopefully with some experienced players returning/playing (like RVP, Eduardo, Silvestre) we’ll make a more composed start this time around. Like AW asked for, the crowed can provide some home comfort even before kick-off & help our players get-off to a good start.

  12. Maria, Africa is like an assembly-line of Songs and Ades, Etos and Essiens, we have lots of wonderfully skilled players, it’s what clubs do with them that counts – the training and direction – … and AW has been one of the best, if not the best, he is incredibly highly regarded in Africa …

  13. Maria – TBH I was hoping Almunia had made a miraculous recovery, don’t get me wrong I like Fabs but to be introduced into the full pace at this end of the season is a big ask though he acredited himself well coming cold off the bench for Manu.

  14. CB,
You have to kind of unfold the damn things, it’s tricky, but with practice … eventually …

oh, you mean the telly, that one you just kick it, it helps to pass the calculator-type adding machine thing to someone under 35

  15. Sorry to repeat but I am gunning for this f*cking Atmosphere CoordinatorI

…a call to arms is what we need….
….we should sing Carmina Burana the actual words are here, and are very poignant….I give you O Four Tuna….

….Pushkin is ‘good enough’ for me (boomboom)..
….anyone who is related to Hannibal is worthy….

…and this f*cking Gunnersaurus…shoot the f*cker…..we should have a squirrel or squirrels …footballistically poignant….and an elephant or elephants….noble creatures all….and there should be hundreds of them in costume handing put goodies on the day…..not just one…how stingy can you get….Atmosphere Coordinator indeed!!!

  16. Don’t worry bob you can follow me on twitter I have a v.hip pre match routine…..no arsenal will be left behind!! @ Zpaul I must my fav non arsenal player has to be Éto I watched the last ACN the standard was very high but I was beyond upset when 1st the ivory coast team fell to the pharoahs then cameroon…..oh well there’s always next year…lol….

  17. That was arsenal fan…..have no fear!!!

  18. Ah, I understand twitter. That’s what birds do, right?

  19. is it confirmed that RVP is in the squad?? he was supposed to have a test this morning acc. to the website…

  20. …why is the ACN held two yearly?…

  21. Flint McCullough

    Interesting read,as ever, YW.

AW has said that RVP is having a fitness test, the outcome of which would dictate the formation of his side. If he fails it seems it will be Cesc/ Nasri behind the striker again.

He also indicated that the back 4 would be the 1 that finished, against Wigan.

Gibbs, in Valencia, was up against 1 of the more capable & gifted wide men, in the PL. His inexperience is not ideal but there is only 1 way to get that experience! It could be that Denilson is played, in front of him.

Eboue would be an option, at LB, but if that was going to happen, he would have played there on Saturday. It makes no sense to further disrupt the back line by moving Sagna.

Let’s pray there are no further injuries in that department. We have some very promising kids but they are at least 2 years off being ready.

AW’s interview, with Equipe, was very interesting. I thought he justified the line that YW & a lot of us have taken, over the last couple of seasons.

““One should remember what everyone seems to forget – we play against people who have unlimited funds, they can buy the best players in the world. You produce young talent with your limited funds, but still everyone is asking you to always beat these teams.

Speaking to Tuesday’s L’Equipe, the 59-year-old went on: “I remember winning at Chelsea this year. When I left the stadium, this bloke came to me at the end and said ‘I am an Arsenal fan, good game, but I don’t think we are going to win the league with such a team!’

I told him: ‘You are not an Arsenal fan. You have just seen some 20-21-year-old kids in midfield beating the likes of Ballack, Lampard, Drogba and Anelka! Haven’t you got anything less negative to say?’

It is unbelievable that, nowadays, you can’t cheat people on the quality of football but you can manipulate their opinion.”

That sums it up for me.

I want him to know he is not alone, in thinking he has been doing the right thing, & that there is still a large majority of Gooners, who are still right behind him.

  22. The defence is a bit worrisome with the absence of Gallas and Clichy in particular. Gibbs was shaky against Wigan but has played well all season in the FA and Carling cups competitions. Dropping Gibbs now might kill his confidence, he should rather be given another chance to prove himself and might surprise everybody.

I think Arsene should fall back to 4-4-2, drop Denilson to allow FAB4 to play deep and bring in RvP to support Ade upfront. 3 nil to the Arsenal.

  23. frank.. they even wanna have the world cup every 2 yrs… nuts..

  24. “I want him to know he is not alone, in thinking he has been doing the right thing, & that there is still a large majority of Gooners, who are still right behind him.”

    Same here! Great comment!

  25. Flint

The other way to protect Gibbs is to play Eboue or Bentner ahead of him. What’s or take on this? This is because Denilson might not be able to track back when needed because of his lack of pace.

  26. I think that AW is right, Flint…and we have alwaqys supported him and his squad….but I don’t share your opinion of Arsenal supporters…most are arseholes…….

…any way I am off to the game…..

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal…ARSENAL….clickclickclick

…wan Arsene Wenger…theres only wan Arsene Wenger….wan Arsene Weennngggeerr…theres’ only waan Arsene Weennngggerr….

  27. COYG!!!

Sing up, Frank! I’ll be listening out for you.

  28. Flint, what’s your take on my suggestion regarding Gibbs’ protection?

  29. ….we are hip…we are cool …we are Arsenal and we rule…lalalalaaaaahh…lalalaaah…lalaaaaah….

…Ohhhh Four Tuna….Briiinng more Tuna…..Statuary on his knees..

    ….some men like cheese….hot temperate cheese….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL clickclickclick

  30. nice one Flint. Bang on, as ever!
i’m suprised ebouie isn’t playing tonight. My main concern is Silvestre, he just looks so slow on his feet… 2 : 1 Arsenal tonight.

  31. GO, GO GUNNERS,
    GO GO GO GUNNERS

    12-Bar Football Blues
by Satchmo Cesc and His FeetWarmers

I’ve got the blues in South
Coz my girl’s in the West
And my money’s in the East
    Ain’t that an awful mess
But my team is the very, very best
    So you go Gunners,
You make the dream for me,
    Now you just c’mon Gunners,
You are the team for me.
Oh yes, oh yeah, you are.

  32. I hate playing the second leg a home, for some reason it’s so much nicer going into the second leg away knowing that anything we score will be huge and anything we concede will be relatively insignificant. As it is we’ve got sit there hoping our defence can hold while knowing that even if we do score it really doesn’t affect the tie too much because they still only need the one goal! Sod it, come on the Arse! This is the night our kids come of age!

  33. COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!!

Great one Flint and Zim Paul. I’m super fired up for this match. I don’t care anymore who Wenger puts in, they will perform. The time for second guessing is well past, now is the time for no fear and absolute support. Just surrender yourself to the team and let them take you with them! No matter the outcome this team is a legend already. We love you Arsenal, yes we do!

  34. Yogi,

My two cents – Denilson will play. He has played every game this season where he was healthy – Wenger will put him out there.

Perosnally I think Song and Silvestre play at the back. Gibbs might sit this one i think….

  35. The usual good sense from Flint.

Sylvestre will play CB. He is the best option or why did Arsene sign him? He will be the most experienced player in a red shirt on the pitch. Not to be under rated.

  36. Nando

So no room for Toure then?

    YW

  37. YW, I think he means Sylvestre in place of Gibbs

  38. yogi,

    silvestre at left back….

  39. I am detecting a vibe from Arsene of some kind of annoyance with Adebayor….

Hey, I know there is the anti-Ade brigade out there who ridicule his obvious quality and his immenseness for us.

But I just see small cues that Arsene is pissed with him, or at least holding him at a distance.

Anyone else feeling this. I ask especially those who have normal views of Ade.

  40. I just think regardless of what he says Wenger will think he needs to not concede. So he will play Silvestre at left back and tell him not to go forward that much….

Also by playing Song back there he gains some flexibility later in the match – he can always move song forward and play silvestre in the middle

  41. Ade I think will be gone this summer – we don’t need 6 strikers, and thats what we have – fair bit of business if i may say so…

get 30 million for him and make room for eduardo, vela, simpson, bentner (obviously VP), plus Arshavin and Walcott to play more up top

  42. ohhh, I forgot – GGGGOOOOOO the GUNS!

  43. Why would you say that Ole? I just read Arsene saying that when Ade is on song he is a striker he likes because “He has that combination of physical strength, technical quality and a determined attitude. I believe he is a needed presence in the middle”. I don’t see where you would get the impression that there is something wrong? Most of the team have had dips in their performance at different points in the season so I’m sure Arsene is far too mature to hold that against them.

  44. Actually I’m more worried about making sure we have players to cover should we lose additional defenders.

Today’s game will be a midfield game, and a tactical battle. Individual battles will matter less since I honestly don’t rate Lloriente and Rossi. I think our centre backs can contain them. With Fabianski, Silvestre and Gibbs one will worry about blunders. But a blunder won’t decide the game.

What will decide the game is how incisive our front 4 will be. if they fire, we go through comfortably. And to fire our midfield has to be up for it. I worry about midfield balance because Cesc has only just come in again, and the team is still readjusting to him.

  45. nando, I think that’s just wishful thinking on your part. Bendtner is not yet a patch on Ade and Wenger will want to keep the latter for his greater experience, his physical presence and ability to successfully play the 1 in a 4-5-1. We still need him for our plan ‘B’.

  46. Passenal,

I read the very same article. The endorsement of Ade wasn’t ringing. It was hedged with ifs.

But that wasn’t all. Pictures I’ve seen of the two in training and on the pitch recently, the body language has been strange with distance between them and Wenger not looking him in the eye.

  47. I think you are projecting your own feelings Ole because I’ve seen exactly what you’ve seen and I’ve not thought that for one second.

  48. Hold up a sec. We all know from the Cesc affair just how misleading photos can be. That one pic of him looking pumped on the pitch after the whistle was pretty much the basis of a media campaign against our club.

Only 6 weeks left of the season and more important things to focus on, in my opinion.

  49. …Only six weeks of the season left and there are more important things on which to focus – in my opinion…

  50. That’s not right either. I give up.

    Come on you reds!!!

  51. Believe he will go the same formation that he used against roma..with one change.. bendnter and walcott on the wings.. nasri in the hole.. fab and denilson behind..
and the back four will be same as against the latics..

    Go Gooooooners !!

  52. I’ll help you out OneOfUs, how about “…Only six weeks of the season left and in my opinion there are more important things on which to focus…” And I’ll second that opinion since I really don’t understand this need to look for problems were there are none.

  53. Passenal,

WTF are you talking about? What’s my feeling about Adebayor that I am projecting? Nobody defends Ade more than me here or on Arsenal vision.

I do however see a distance.

It’s unlike Wenger to be coy or to hedge his praise of his key players. When he does that in Ade’s case that sets me wondering.

The photos I’ve seen are some of them almost arguing in training yesterday. Wenger is leaning backwards, almost away from Ade. Watch Ade after scoring his great goal, he went to Wenger to celebrate and was offered a hand. The hand was far from Wenger which means something in body language. Watch them as Ade got ready to come on at Wigan. I saw the same distance.

You can tell me I’m overreading it, but projecting is BS I don’t expect from you.

  54. We wouldn’t know what Le Boss is thinking, could be one way or t’other. AWs reference to Ade (is he going, is he staying in the last summer) made interesting reading. Ade potential = superb, but committment = not a certainty. Ade needs to settle before he will realise his massive talent.

I believe his commitment in the coming weeks tho will be massive. In the long run … whatever.

  55. Thanks, Passenal. I’ll try out it out:

Only six weeks of the season left and in my opinion there are more important things on which to focus.

It still works, grammatically and semantically!

  56. There’s no need for that tone Ole – it’s often the case that if you believe something to be true you will unconsciously interpret little things to support your own hypothesis and ignore evidence to the contrary. I really do not see what it gains to look for signs of trouble at this time in the season. Ade is an Arsenal player and Arsene is a professional. I say leave them both to do their respective jobs and after that, what will be will be.

  57. Passenal,

    Couldn’t agree with you more.
Ade was bought originally for plan B games up north on cold winter nights. He just flabbergasted everyone, including Wenger himself, with his performance last season. He is the only player we have that can effectively hold a 4-5-1 formation and he has improved so much that now he’s an automatic choice for big European games as well. Its no coincidence Barca and Milan want him. The problem is Ade knows it too – and his ego has gone through the roof ever since. Wenger doesn’t do confrontation as well as fergie which is needed at times (diarra).

I think in an ideal world Wenger wouldn’t opt for a physical approach and would prefer to go with a technical team like – Cesc playing deep, AA at Number 10 with Rosicky, Nasri, RVP playing off him like fireflies. But idealism is naive when your playing stoke or bolton. Hence players like Ade, Song, Diaby, Eboue come to mind.

What will be really interesting is to see AA and Ade play together. Ade has quite a high degree of technical ability when you consider his size. The problem is we don’t see this come through often enough like the bicycle kick at El Madrigal or the Volleys at Spurs / Villa. Instead it becomes diluted by his clumsiness in the sheer number of chances he needs and the amount of times he goes offside. Maybe playing with AA will sharpen his technical side. If he does manage to do this – he will be some player..!!

  58. Ole Gunner

What are you trying to say

  59. Passenal,

You’ve gone even further than I have with my interpretation, really.

Did I speculate anything? No. I am just reporting an observation. And I am even seeking a reality check, and that’s why I ask if anyone else detects it.

But I really don’t appreciate the bit about believing anything to be true. I had no reason to believe Wenger has anything against Ade. But I have picked up a few small clues that may or may not mean anything.

    C’est tout! :D

  60. Joe

Adebayor looks clumsy, his touch aint always the best.. but for a man his size he has very good technique i think.

His heading is good, always headering down and quite accurately. His strength i agree makes him ideal for them tricky away games. But he looks at times clumsy i reckon because we have some of the best technically gifted players in our squad. Arshavin, Nasri, Cesc, RvP, Walcott all very quick thinkers and passers. Bendtner looks very lost in some games.. but we need these big strikers.

Ive stood next to the likes of Bergkamp and Henry and they are alot bigger in real life than what you see on the telly. It is all about getting the best players physically.. Ade is one of them.

  61. at the moment, at nearly 3pm on the day of a Champs Lge qtr final second leg, at home – all this Ade stuff is irrelevant.

    4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2 / 2-3-5 whatever !

let’s concentrate on supporting the team, believe that whatever XI is out there, whatever formation, they are going to give it absolutely everything. And hopefully so will those of us lucky enough to be in the ground.

The next 2 games are massive. MASSIVE. I’m nervous already. I’m so emotionally attached to this team I could cry. I want them to prove all the D+G’rs wrong so badly. All the Platts and Wrights and Hansens and Redknapps wrong. And all the so called Gooners who slagged off AW – I want to see them jump up and down and go mental with the rest of us when we do something special.

If Bendy came off the bench and scored the winner tonight I think I might spontaneously combust.

    COME ON ARSENAL.

  62. Joe,

I watched the Wigan game again to see what it looks like if 4 of our best 5 play together, and I was pleased with what I saw. I wanted to see how Ade, RVP, Arsh and Cesc link up, and the answer is very very well.

I do think Ade’s technical side is much much underrated. He’s very very good with the ball. Watch him when the ball comes to his feet. He’s got a very very sure touch ball to feet. He can dribble, and he can pass. Ade’s only weaknesses as a player is shooting, and calming down to take the easy chances.

    ChrisGOONER,
I am not trying to say anything. I am just wondering if anyone else reads the body language and comments the same way.

  63. agree on wenger being annoyed with ade as he hinted in his interview with l’equipe.but then he did praise after the game in villareal.i dnt think arsenal shud sell him in the summer unless arsene believes his attitude stinks & he has sum1 better lined up.ade on fire is an asset.to win trophies u’v got to be ruthless & in that respect i’d rather hav him than bendtner.at times the dane’s like a retard in front of goal.he’s had his chance this season but he’s missed so many clear chances that someone more clinical wud hav ate them up in an instant.but then to be fair to him u’v gotto say that playin infront of an inept/rookie midfield he had poor service.we’v been linked with edin dzenko frequently but i’v got a feelin that the mancs or sum other club with deeper pockets will beat us to his signature:)

  64. ChrisGooner, I think you may have a point there. Because Ade is big and can look clumsy when things don’t come off compared to our small technical players he gets unfairly slated. But in fact he has better technique than he is given credit for, he is also fast – he was the one who was able to keep up with Theo at Anfield, which enabled him to be on the end of that pass. I think Bendtner also suffers from similar comparison. But playing in the premier league our small technical players alone are not enough. We need the physical players too and if they did not have technical quality as well, they would not be in the team. That is not Arsene’s way.

Ole – you asked for an opinion when you first posited your theory. If you did not want to hear an opinion, which contradicted your own, perhaps you should have kept that thought to yourself.

  65. @ joe

i dun thnk dose bicycles n volleys can b scored more often . what we need from ade is dat just to take d easy chances n atleast dun make a mess of them..

    @ ole
i dun thnk we can help ade thng right now bottomline is dat he has to play i mean he is far better dab bendtner.

what du u guys thnk abt walcott?? is hea good player or just an avg player wid lots of speed.

  66. Villareal seem to be overrating their strength which they seem to think is experience. What they don’t realise is that we have a young but not completely inexperienced team. Some of Villareal’s most experienced players actually have less Champions League experience than the likes of Cesc, RVP& Adebayor…Even Denilson, Song and Walcott have significant Champions League experience.

I always thought experience was overrated anyways in football. I believe youth is a huge advantage. They can push their bodies in ways older players can’t. One big advantage Arsenal have from youth is that you know they’ll still be zesty in the 95th minute.

  67. You’re so right Matty – it’s probably just a manifestation of nerves!

  68. Adebayor for Plan A, Bendtner for Plan B. Where does that leave Vela? And Walcott?

Would van Persie be Plan V or Plan P?

  69. well i think sagna should be played at left back and eboue should come in at right back, I like gibbs but a subs role for a 17/18 year old in the champleague quater final is still good and he will have plenty more opportunities to gain experience this game leaves little rom for error and with gallas and djourou injured I think my trail of thought makes sense.

  70. I don’t understand some of the criticism that has been levelled at Adebayor in recent times. People said his attitude stank at the start of the season although he rocketed with 8 goals and a few assists to boot.
He got frustrated as lets be honest, we were poor creatively but he was still willing although not playing at the top of his confidence (i.e. wanting to make an impact but growing ever frustrated at not).

Anyway during this period, he always talked about getting back on track and what I’ve heard some people say about him is thoroughly unjust.

It all comes to the way he plays, and that agents were speaking about him. He is a class player as some of you posters have recognised unlike other sites.

  71. I invited van Persie to my birthday.

    But he didn’t rvp.

  72. Man I must be nervous.

  73. hmm i like walcott.we all know he’s fast & can skin defenders but he lacks that finesse & final ball & his decision making is not good at times.he has games where he’s unplayable cos he r.scares defences with his pace but to be world class ala ribery/ronaldo u need intelligence as well.but i hope wenger helps walcott develop this over the nxt year or two.

  74. @ km

    everyone likes walcott
but hw gud is a winger if d final delievry is not good
    still hez very young
heard long tym ago abt prodigious walcott
but am afraid hes failed to deliever
    of course IMO

  75. OOU,

Walcott is a great talent. He can finish and shoot. If he works on his defending, and his understanding of tactical situations, then he doesn’t have to be a ball player.

His pace will get him into shooting positions but I like what Wenger is doing with him. Learn to play with the team, and at some point he’ll earn the right to take shots in the box.

  76. @ OLE

everyone has to be a certain amt of ball player

  77. Very strange assessments of Walcott.

  78. Denilson isn’t good enough to play in this team.

We need a midfield enforcer not a pass the ball sideways crab football merchant.

You lot know nothing because this because you don’t go to the games.

The stats mean nothing because i’ve never read them.

My eyes see all. MY EYES, MY EYES, MY EYES!!

  79. A massive 6 days coming up for us.

    COME ON ARSENAL!!!!

  80. one thngs for sure dat lad can provide us a goal anytime so u have to have him but still man a winger shud provide dat deadly ball day in day out

  81. Wenger tell lies!

I see this with my EYES!

    I have lovely thighs!

    I hope Alex Song Dies!

  82. @ queen

u saying dat d lot here dusnt see arsenal play???

  83. KM,

Walcott’s very presence gives us space. This is a valuble commodity with the likes Cesc and Arsh(would he were playing tonight)
His pace is feared and it makes the back line sit that little bit deeper making more space in the middle of the park.
Also he is a confidence player now he has scored we might see (fingers crossed) him really start to attack.
    UP THE F’IN GUNNERS!!!

  84. @ queen

u sayin dat d lot here dusnt see arsenal play??

  85. Matty says ….
The next 2 games are massive. MASSIVE. I’m nervous already. I’m so emotionally attached to this team I could cry. I want them to prove all the D+G’rs wrong so badly.

zimPaul says … hey Matty, me too bro …

… this team has spirit man. AW will actually be telling them all to calm down and relax, breath deeply, have fun … keep it simple

Personally, I think VR will be undone by the exhuberance and overwhelmed by skill, and speed and we just keep coming; we f***ing WANT THIS … we all want this … we deserve this … We will fight for this … watch out for RvP, Ade, for Theo, Eboue … Song, big game players, Nasri … Kolo, Fabianski

On a personal note, I want the unbeaten record to continue come what may.

Cesc’s warriors will step forward tonight, I truly believe this and Cesc will leading from the front.

AW will be a nervous wreck, then again, he loves this, this is why he does it. This is our week.

  86. I’m mocking the views held on other blogs Matt.

  87. Take it easy, QoS.

  88. Hey PZ.

That’s pretty much a summary of the discussion I had on denilson this morning.

  89. I made the bit about the thighs up.

  90. I’m really looking forward to tonight. I think we can get the job done.

As much as I love SuperBob (not to be confused with Consolbob) I hope he has a mare this evening.

  91. So who has lovely thighs? Denilson? Who doubts it?

  92. Hey Queenie, yes we knew … those crab cakes!!

  93. If you read the Grove this morning, you’ll see why i can’t post there anymore. Its impossible to question anything the self proclaimed great man writes.

  94. Denilson does have lovely thighs but he’s a little young for me!

  95. Not even his visionary 3-4-3 formation?

  96. I think we are agreed that Song’s thighs make for sighs and cries and that LG is all lies, that ACLF flies, that VR CL aspiration dies, that to the ocassion we shall rise, and that predictions were premature of our demise, to Pool in CL it’s goodbyes and to our Arsenal that always tries we are on high….z

    an am I nervous now

    it’s your fault matty

  97. Fear not loyal Gooners for tonight I shall be wearing my superlucky Triple top Home and Away combo, Dudu9, over 49er, over TH14, I shall be sporting both lucky scarves and my lucky hat, I shall as have my chips from the Chinese on Gillespie road and 2 packs of lucky cola bottle from the sweet stand. Im gunna sing my heart out and fully expect to have no voice tomorrow
I try to do good deeds on the way to stadium to build up Karma (I kid you not)
This has been working since January………
Arsene Wengers Red and White Army….

  98. Its only visionary because his EYES see all.

  99. .ade,

True. But great players don’t always have to be that. Overmars wasn’t much of a ball player, just a very fast and effective mothafocka

  100. I’ve been drinknig out of my lucky Arsenal mug all day.

    We can’t fail.

The main reason for this is that we are a better side than they are.

  101. Jen (my dearest) is wearing her lucky Arsenal mitts, so don’t even worry … it does not fail, I kid you’all not, and we won’t be watching with Chenka who has … unfortunate karma … it’ll be fine, fine, fine, fine, fine

  102. VillaReal will be nervous wrecks, wait and see, they have no idea what awaits, well they do, their worstest fears

  103. QoS, you should not joke about Alex Song’s thighs … only kidding …

  104. Good point on Overmars, Ole.

Freddie Ljungberg wasn’t the most gifted either. His passing wasn’t that incisive, and he was little more than a decent dribbler. He had pace though, and after a while he learned how to time his runs into the box and perfected his finishing.

That’s just how I saw him by the way.

I have high hopes for Theo along those lines, except Theo has much more potential.

  105. QoS,

That knowledge of our superiority is what’s calming me down right now too.

  106. Alex Ice Cream

I think that this will be a nervy night that will be decided by 1 goal. I fear that the second string defence could well have at least one mistake in it and that Villareal will score. This leaves us needing to score twice which I am convinced that we can do.

We have to start at a high tempo and push Villareal back. This way we will hopefully have less defending to do and give us the maximum chance of scoring. I also believe that we are the fitter team and will be stronger in the latter stages of the match.

Last night was a reminder of what can happen when the home team starts too slowly and gives the initiative to the away side.

I don’t think that it will be all-out attack from Villareal as they will play on the counter as they like to do. If they need a goal late in the second half this could well change but I am hopeful that we will have scored ourselves by then.

I am feeling quite nervous, almost queasy. We need to get behind the team tonight and I certainly will be screaming.

    COME ON ARSENAL!

  107. YW

“Arsene said in the build-up that the team would not be sitting back and seeking a goalless draw because it is not their natural game. Had he been able to field his strongest XI, I suspect that Wenger would change his view. However, that is not the case and it is difficult to find fault with his rationale.”

    Woo… woo…

  108. QoS
re your summary of Le Grove “discussion”
    ROFL

    *****
Matty, I feel the same. COYG!!!

    ****
Ole, I must say I haven’t noticed any coolness between Wenger and Adebayor. I don’t think Arsene’s too bothered about being mates with his players – he said as much in a biography I read. Henry was a special case, and I think Fabregas is, too – they do seem to have a personal relationship. Perhaps what you’re hearing as faint praise is Wenger emphasising the primacy of the team over any individual? (He often does that when people praise Fabregas as well.) Just a thought.

    ****
    @ Poliziano

    [W+(RVP x A) + F to the power of N] x A = VICTORY
If that’s not clear, see me after class.

  109. I think we will win today ,hopefully it would not be nerve wrecking . U guys going to the game let support the boys all the way . MAKE SOME NOISE .Come on u Gooners

  110. i hope arsenal come out all guns blazing like scarface-yeh mothafokkas! Fabregas shud hav more freedom now that senna isn’t playing, cos in the 1st half that nite, senna was immense,a masterclass in DM play. We need to stop v’real playing their neat football by gettin in their faces & gettin the tackles in early ala bolton:)& gettin theo to lay on ‘passes’ & crosses in the box.is rvp playing?

  111. Had to pop over to the Dark Side to read Queenie’s row. Matt came to her side and got slagged as well. Great fun! They don’t get irony over there. Muppet would last about 30 seconds before being sinbinned.

What’s it like over there when we are losing?

You really must learn to control those hormone thingies Queenie, you can’t expect men to deal with irrational argument based on fact. Sheesh!

Back in the real world, I think we are all too nervous. What is there to be worried about? OK, I know that Willie and Clichy are injured. RVP too. AA cup tied. Almunia out. Song, Denilson and Eboue are not worthy of a place in Sp*rs reserves. But I mean, come on!

    3-0 Gunners.

  112. [W+(RVP x A) + F to the power of N] x A = VICTORY
If that’s not clear, see me after class.

I need tutoring but I like what this equation equals. Very Funny FunGun!

    Morning/Afternoon all!

  113. NO FEAR!!!!

  114. AIC, whats up man?

  115. COME ON YOU RIP ROARING REDS!!!!

  116. We love you Arsenal…We do
    We love you Arsenal…We do
    AaaRrrsenal……We love You

  117. G4E, what up?

  118. A few Champions league stats to mull over. All matches to date (group and knockout stages)

    SUCCESSFUL TACKLES
    Mascherano 38
    Denilson 33
    Arbaloa 32
    Toulalan 29
    Reges (Porto) 25

    Honourable mention – Arshavin 22 in 11th place !

    PASSING
    Xavi 676 (90% successful)
    Denilson 626 (88%)
    Mikel 605 (89%)
    Senna 587 (86%)
    Alonso 542 (84%)

    ATTEMPTS CREATED
    Arshavin 38
    Xavi 22
    Lampard 21
    Messi 19
    Gonzalez 18

    FOULS WON
    Ribery 36
    Ronaldo 29
    Rodriguez (Porto) 23
    Senna 23
    Denilson 21

Quite incredible that Arshavin who only played in the group stages has the above figures! Lets see what he can do next year.
Cesc has missed a few games so does not appear high on the passing and attempts created list.

  119. Hey Paul N…Excited for the game man, but trying to finish some work so I can be free to watch it.

  120. Hey Paul N…Excited for the game man, but trying to finish some work so I can be free to watch it.

  121. I don’t think QoS can be kidding again already.

  122. I thought the equation was more simple, as in …

AW strategy + youth policy x Cesc Warriors + Unbeaten Run (- Le Grove and D&G merchants) + ACLF Rasers + special African juju muti I have secretly prepared + Song’s thighs x QoS special arsenal drinking mug & Jen’s mitts = 3-1 to Arse

FunGun see me after class …

    No fear

  123. Double posting? What’s up with that Yogi’s?

  124. @ km

plz no bolton game for us man
    newez

    up the arse

  125. Wait for Song special dribble and shot

  126. RvP will score

  127. Speaking of kidding – where’s Goatb.. – er, Ponyboy?

  128. I prefer Denilson’s special thighs to Song’s special dribble.

  129. Alex Ice Cream

    Paul N,

Getting really nervous now but looking forward to the game!

  130. Alex Ice Cream

    Pz,

Wouldn’t Denilson’s special dribble end up on his thighs? The best of both world’s for you?

  131. Yes, I was wondering that Pz. There was someone on here a couple of days ago, called ‘Maria’, an obviously made up name, who called him the “brains of the site”!

Incredible isn’t it? He has to make up a new name and come on here to puff himself up. Maria, I ask you.

  132. Alex Ice Cream

Sorry didn’t read the post properly!

  133. Me too G4E! to tell you the truth I dont have too much work today.

I hear you AIC, the anticipation is mad! but we will prevail!!

Funny thing is with Villarreal, is that reading their comments it seems like that feal they should have won the first leg? I dont get it, I do agree they were the better team in the first half but we were definately best in the second. They had a long distance goal, great yes but our goal was created buy a great pass and unbelievable control and strike. We more than deserved our goal and the draw!

  134. We have a secret weapon

It’s called ‘we’ve been written off all season’ and we are still unbeaten since whenever, thankyou to the young players who simply said ‘bring it on’

    I hope Gibbs plays
    I hope Theo scores

Check ALL the stats, we are better than VR

  135. We have the advantage … VR know that … now they have to come to our homeground … they have been talking up a big game, which is the sign of a brittle team … I would have been worried if the message was ‘we respect Arsenal’.

Pz you’ll like Song’s special dribble afterwards, and appreciate the aesthetics of Den’s special thighs even more, trust me …

  136. Ponyboy was going a bit mad a few days ago. He made a cameo yesterday (or was it the day before?) when Tintin was mentioned. I hadn’t realised the person praising Ponyboy was Ponyboy himself – but who else could it be?

  137. Come on Arsenal !!!!

  138. CBob….what’s up wise man?

  139. Later gator …s

  140. GO GUNNERS to the power of ‘we love you’

    Hell, how sentimental is that!!!

  141. Pboy will make a special appearance at the post-match interviews … as ‘the analyst’ …

  142. or the arsenalyst

  143. evening all…boy o boy im absolutely drained. i havnt a clue whats gone on this week only me misses gave birth to a lovely baby girl and i have since been pre- ocupied. but hopefully me girl will have a nice sleep later and let me watch the football. 144. It’s my birthday today and the only thing I want for present is Arsenal going through to the semifinals.

Come on Arsenal, please make my day….

    Lots of love from Denmark

  145. Come on Arsenal make my birthday a perfect day please…..

  146. A great week for you Duke is about to get even better. Open that bottle and sit back and enjoy. Song was a dream against Wigan. Have you seen his goal?

I’m making pasties for the match, nice bottle of Sangiovese to go with them. Ah!

G4E, No 1. grandson just left to go home. Peace has descended on the house before the screaming starts in less than two hours.

    REDS!REDS!REDS!REDS!REDS!

I think Pb might be going a bit OTT. He is over the shock of freedom now and probably feels confident enough to go out. Can he get back though?

  147. Congrats DUke!!

  148. No 1. Grandson is a Gunner CBob?

  149. I’m off to the game – see you guys later!

  150. Duke, congratulations man!!!!

A great gift from God, blessings on you and your family, in Jesus’ name.

    Had to do it!

  151. Passenal,

    Lucky you!!

  152. Hey, congratulations Duke!

  153. Congratulations Duke. It’s definitely Spring at A Cultured Left Foot.

April is the coolest month, breeding
Babies out of the Arse fans, mixing
    Memory and desire, stirring
    Bright shoots with spring games.

  154. Not yet G4E. He lives in deepest Dartmoor in a household that is sport free unless you count rabbit hunting.

I have plans for him though. I am sure that Duke does as well.

  155. Congrats Duke…A Gunner Baby Girl.. :)

Don’t let him slip away CBob.

  156. Arghh! My boss is trying to pull an all-nighter here. It’s nearly eight and there’s no end in sight to my working day.

May need ACLF updates more than ever tonight.

  157. Congrats DUke!! Wish you have many many more!

    We love you Arsenal…We do
    We love you Arsenal…We do
    AaaRrrsenal……We love You

  158. OOU, would you like me to pray that you will get home on time? ha ha!!

  159. thanks everyone!!

I really do appreciate woman a little bit more now. Maybe they should be allowed to drive cars after all!! lol.

When do you rekon is a good time to take her to the grove??? i suppose she will have to be talking first so she can boo the opposition! ha ha.

  160. RVP fit and playing. Silvestre and Gibbs playing. Walcott, Fabregas, Song and Nasri in midfield.

    Yogi was spot on.

    REDS!REDS!REDS!

  161. Im sorry. That ‘many many more’ was suppose to be the birthday wish to messi4arsenal. I mixed it up. lol.

So, Happy Birthday messi4arsenal and Congratzz DukeGoonem for having a lovely baby girl.

    Why am I so nervous.

    We love you Arsenal…We do
    We love you Arsenal…We do
    AaaRrrsenal……We love You

  162. Bobby starts too.

  163. Wait, Sagna out as well.

  164. Finally! Time to escape. This is touch and go!

  165. whats that Bob?? bacary out??

  166. Eboue is playing RB, Sagna not even on the bench

  167. where is Duracell?

  168. Watching and waiting for some Hansenesque post-analysis IF we lose..

Dammit, was quite relaxed until everyone said how nervous they were..
“Confident thoughts = Positive outcomes” [ at the end of the day...]

If it’s a game of two halves..well…will miss the first half searching for a thread.

And STILL agree with everything Passenal says…
PZ -Stoatboy, now.. am free to roam and hunt!

  169. Bacary injured, Eboue plays RB.

4 out of 5 missing in defence.

    No Fear!

  170. No Fear!!!

where did you read that about Sagna Mr. Bob?

  171. Oh ffs, Consols…how can Bac be injured NOW ????

    This is truly scary..

  172. Splash out on Sky Pb/Maria. Good to see you back, by the way. Can you play right back, only Arsene is a bit light in defence?

  173. No fear, Lord Ebuoe will be breathing fire tonight, and we know what Fab-yanski can do when on fire… Amsterdam tournament anyone?

  174. Lets not forget that Eboue is a very good LB with some precise crosses, PL calibre if you ask me.

  175. It’s on Sky now Paul. The team is as Yogi said but with Eboue at RB.

No further news. We saw Bacary walk into the ground though.

  176. Sh1te… shoot the messenger!!!

  177. Pb/Maria – now thats the funniest thing I have read all day!

  178. Bacary is indestructible..he is made of other people’s body parts..

  179. Eboue RB Paul, Gibbs at LB.

  180. pb/maria….is that some kind of a holy grail or should I say holy union?

  181. Is that true PB? are you a split personality with Maria?

  182. Sagna has a virus.

  183. oops, thats what I meant Mr. Bob.

  184. Be Healed!!

  185. There’s a man at the door with a gun! Have you got long, lanky hair, going a bit bald and grey Pb? I am not opening up!

  186. Very attack minded lineup tonight:
isnt this the same side that destroyed Porto at the Groove?

  187. Pb’s got a split personality alright Paul. Half of him fancies Vela and half lusts after Maria. Fortunately, his solution is to hand.

  188. Of course that day, we had all of the missing men, who were playing badly at the time

  189. will the real PB please stand up!

  190. You have a mirror on your front door, CBob?

  191. I’ll admit to the grey Pz, but strongly refute the rest. It has been many a year since I could boast longer hair than Charlie.

  192. Standing up has ever been Pb’s problem SG.

  193. What about the balding Mr. Bob?

  194. Special night!

  195. Am back any good links guys?

  196. Nope, full head of hair Paul. Good clean living, apart from the wine, beer and cider. Lots of home grown vegetables and, of course, eggs.

  197. Thanks to Hector of course…

  198. heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey……i see i have been th ebutt on many a joke on this site while i have been away….how so??

  199. He/she’s ‘back’, I see. Nudge, nudge.

  200. Its about that time.

    COME ON ARSENAL!!!!!

    NO FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

  201. cheeky ol’ men……..

  202. If we lose Cbob… i look like Heath Ledger..

  203. Ask ‘Pb’, ‘Maria’.

  204. Isn’t he dead Pb? I may be a bit out of touch but I’m not sure that look is ‘in’.

  205. Dammit, Maria nearly gave me a heart-attack last time..
But -p lease give me a drip.. a stream..am in a bad way! Bacary gets a virus!!
    It’s just not football.

  206. Thats good Mr. Bob!

Just watched Ade’s goal again, what a goal!

Must be the best goal of the CL this year!

  207. You got it Consols.. we are both dead men walking… or sitting down in my case..

  208. congrats dukeG … lovely news
    heppi heppi birthday Messi

can’t belive bac is out, no problemo …

  211. Thank God for Eboue!

  212. This is all too much…i’ll sue!!

  213. Muntazir…the star in a waxing/waning firmament..

  214. the clash of the continents, dont know which ones; arsenal Villareal or the pbs and …..

  215. He can’t talk his way out of this one ‘Maria’. He is is his usual frenzy at match time.

  225. good defending from Silvestre!

We are passing the ball as smooth as silk!

  226. It was said he picked up a virus.

  241. But tere’s always the sublime comfort of Alan Green moaning about Ronaldo on 5Live…

  242. Hope this isn’t the other half of the lemon coming up; Subs have been subdued.. think he’s playing us at our game.. so plenty of FEAR to enjoy yet… if we can find it..

Follow the instructions to install a video plug-in to be able to use your web browser to watch the match.

  244. myp2p.eu – can usually lead you to a good stream.

sometimes you can go in the chatroom, people are usually posting streams.

  245. Talking to yourself again Pb?

  246. I’m watching on TV but download TVU/sopcast and every week come to this site: http://footballstreaming.info/

Alternatively there are many media player options for you to enjoy. Enjoy!!!

  247. Santos! “Install a video plug-in..”….Some of us still have Vinyl, maan!
    Thanks everyone!

  248. Thanks guys, how good is it santos?

  249. It’s either myself, the walls or my imaginary friend… we sometimes have parties..

  250. You can usually find a station on the TVU download also.

  251. Walcott is serious tonight!

    Second half belongs to us!

  252. Toure shouldve went for the bal, let the linesman raise the flag.

  253. ball that is

  254. Well, he played as a kid… and – ok, am going now, head bowed….

  255. Veetle is normally pretty reliable, but when dealing in the dark crafts you can never be 100% it’s Sultana USA coverage of the game but good picture.

  256. Adebayoooooooooor

  257. GGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!

  258. That all she wrote!!

    Thats what you call football!!!

  259. The commentators on Setanta are Howard and Arse21.

  260. thats, that is

  261. That’s what she said..

  262. I give espn credit, unbiased commentary.

There’s more goals to come from us also!

  263. They are resorting to dirty football!

  264. tell me know if they score or we do!!

  265. will do

  266. Harsh penalty that

  267. Gibbs, Silvestre and Eboue have been great!

  268. looks it, dont it?

  269. Joke decision.

  270. Penalty & sending off in our favour

  271. RVP scores!!

  272. Not used to Arsenal getting soft penalties and this dude couldnt contain himself and got a red.

  273. Exactly Paul, it’s a total shock for me too! LOL

Still, we were looking comfortable long before the pen.

  274. Villareal had already resorted to fouling football.

  275. I dont like that but “thats football” and “calls even themselves out in the end”, thats what everyone told us last year.

    Sorry

  276. i feel like crying……..

  277. Now I know how it feels to be a Liverpool fan!

  278. Yeah maybe v didn’t deserve the penalty…it will take the gloss of our victory though the penalty/sending-off might not really have affected the out come of the match/tie!

  279. I agree we were starting to take over.

  280. Fabianski has not put a foot wrong tonight.

  281. You also know how Villarreal feel!

  282. Fabianski has been great for real, I love how he comes out a sweeps up any ball close, brilliant!

  283. Yes Paul, I think that’s what makes it just a little poignant.

  284. oneofus….the luck thing right??

  285. Yep, the dodgy pen decision in our favour.

  286. It’s down again i am really going to throw a b-f now!!!

  287. Take the gloss off our victory? Are you joking?

  288. was that a goal?

  289. I don’t agree with that! We were well in control anyway.

If it’s a factor that’ll keep us underdogs in people’s eyes then that’s great.

    http://veetle.com/viewChannel.php?cid=49dd52c1ec520

  290. I feal for Villareal but this is a great win. They have not scored one goal so the penalty has not changed much, if they get two now, they can complain.

  291. No it doesn’t take gloss of the win…it’s not our fault the ref gave a soft penalty…

    Come ON Cesc :)

  292. Nope, I’m not joking, looks like we’ll meet ManU in the semis & all the papers will talk up ManU’s performance (!!!) and play down ours

  293. Maybe it was a soft penalty but lots of minor decisions went against us first half. It’s karma my friends.

    Maria – it’s 3-0 and Ade’s just been substituted.

  294. Hey, Porto only need 1

  295. Thanks berg…i am missing the best bits…who came on??

  296. Siva – yeah, and they may forget we only had one first choice defender and sub keeper.

  297. I do hope Porto does score that 1 goal!

  298. came close just now!

  299. Maria – Bendy.

  300. Gibbs has done well and Song is my MOTM

  301. Walcott would be my MOTM

  302. whats the man u score?

  303. True Berg10, the papers said Senna is out so Arsenal will not be tested, what about us loosing almost our 1st choice back-4? No mention!

  304. more importantly did we pick up any yellows?

  305. With about 5 mins regular time, ManU are leading by 0-1 on the night & 2-3 in the tie!

  306. Maria – Manure wre 1-0 up last I read.

  307. Silvester picked up a yellow

  308. Man U, look regular.

  309. damn it!

  310. what??????????

  311. 3-0 to the Arsenal

  312. Damn why is apul scaring me???

  313. A GLOSSY victory!

  314. What a great performance. Now let’s stick it to Man Utd in the next round.

A word on Kieran Gibbs – not on his play, but on the lad himself. He looks such a quiet, unassuming fellow – but he’s got an enormous tattoo on his back. Does anyone know what of? It’s several lines of text… is it the ten commandments, or a gangsta rap lyric, or a Blake poem?

  315. So its us against Kid Alex’s team in the semi!

  316. 3-0 flatters Villareal.
Ade had 6 offsides against but scored another beauty.

  317. I told you guys we needed our shades game on!!! looooooool…….see ARSENAL SHINEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE…….

  318. Ronaldo’s goal was wicked still!!

  319. Sorry Maria, that was for Man U winning

  320. DAMN….

  321. any players out for them in the semis

  322. ony rooney was on a yellow?

any good news on that front?

  323. dont think so, but they looked crap!

  324. Fabianski’s decisions were spot on all night too

  325. Great result. Whole team played well especially with 4 of our first choice back 5 out.

Song is looking more and more like a world class DM.

And special praise to Gibbs. Did a solid job and didn’t for a second look put of place.

Can someone tell me why we don’t go out and spend like the Spud’s?

    Arsenal Arsenal ARSENAL!!!!

  326. love to see arsene dancing

  327. I agree Berg i was soooo impressed he calmed the back four with his movements …bring on the PFA players of the year…young and old…

Anyone know who this guy on Arseneal online is??

  328. Arsene dancing was just great. Funniest thing I’ve seen for ages.

  329. Sylvestre played well tonight. He wants to be a Gunner.

  330. Marc; because we don’t want to be fighting regulation every year…lol….but i just KNOW that Bent would have scored that header….!!!

  331. i know its a polish joke but still here something from grovers

Watching Fabianski reading the game so well makes Almunia look illiterate

  332. Marc – If we did that we wouldn’t even make the Europa league HaHa

  333. Maria – But surely you can see that by spending a fortune that we can’t afford every summer and spectacularly underachieving is the way forward? This is what creates a top team and dedicated fans, not playing good football and creating dynamic young players.

  334. What was Sagna’s sudden illness….its that injury curse again….i am bringing out my garlic!!

  335. lol Marc

    ****
Fabulous result. I think we were worth every iota of 3-0.
    TOP GUNNERS!!!

I hope Gibbs is OK. I was worried he had broken a metatarsal.

Love that the African players have obviously taught “the celebration dance” to one or two of the Europeans! And Arsene’s little jig was so funny.

  336. Santino; that was a low-blow just because Almunia’s dream was to be a farmer does’nt make him slow…

  337. I would say we stood tall and delivered!

  338. Speaking of keepers, Sczeszny the reserve keeper is also excellent and very like Fabianski – sweeping up and decisiveness – so maybe it’s something about the way Polish keepers are trained?

  339. “I was worried he had broken a metatarsal.”

And the commentators on Setanta were hoping he had broken a metatarsal. It was the only time they sounded cheerful all evening.

  340. FunGunner – I’m really worried about Gibbs, after a shaky performance at the weekend he bounced back perfectly, really looked the part. Would hate to see him suffer a setback and we just can’t keep losing players to injury. At this rate we won’t have a defence left.

  341. Your so right fungunner…they shouldn’t need to teach Cesc though his got his own salsa moves…WHAT??? Gibbs out too your making me want to bring out my old buffy shows….crosses and gablic galore….

  342. i think they are also teaching arsene .
he certainly learned the first steps though

  343. Poliziano – What is it with the media? Not only are they happy when our non English players get injured but now they’re picking on young English U21′s.

  344. I agree Muppet can’t believe his still here….heard that Charlton want him back though….

  345. To be fair, the commentators on Setanta are worse than any other journalists or pundits in the world. They really are from the bottom of the barrel.

  346. Is Gibbs Injured? When will Djourou get back?

  347. Maria – 2 yellows for the mans, Evra and Vidic.

  348. Poliziano – Do you think that they are trying to jump on the populist bandwagon of Arsenal bashing just to gain credibility and ratings?

  349. Berg10 – Does this mean that Vidic and Evra miss the semi 1st leg?

  350. I think Lou Macari’s their biggest problem. He hates Arsenal. It’s really galling have him commentating on an Arsenal CL quarter final. Such a dour, miserable man.

  351. Not sure Marc although I didn’t read anything about omissions.

  352. No Marc…..only Rooney entered the game with a yellow

  353. I don’t think Gibbs is injured.

lol again Marc, and lol Muppet

    ****
“And the commentators on Setanta were hoping he had broken a metatarsal. It was the only time they sounded cheerful all evening.”

I had the sound turned off and listened to ATVO commentary. Clearly a sound decision on my part.

  354. We are STILL super outsiders…..straight from AW mouth…..no pressure there then!!

  355. FunGunner,

Are you sure it was on Setanta ? I watched it on Sky Sports 3. Curious.

  356. I quite simply love these guys!

Let the press say what they want, all here must be beyond them by now.

    Joy pure and simple……

  357. We are definite outsiders at 4/1, then the Chavs , Manure then favourites Barcelona (only just)

  358. Did i miss anything?????

  359. Skysports had good commentry with Smudge

  360. I saw Gibbs limping towards the end of the game ……

For the upcoming FA Cup, I suspect Chelsea will use the tactics that was used so effectively against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League – win freekicks and corners and put tall players inside the penalty box.

I am afraid we are going to have a hard time if Djourou is not back. None of the player in our defence is over 6 feet tall! I guess Wenger will put Diaby and Song in the middle of the park to add strength and height. Will he use Zonal or Man to Man Marking?

Anyone got any solution to overcome Chelsea?

  361. @ Muppet – yes

    *****
We are now in two semifinals. This is conclusive proof that:

    THESE PLAYERS ARE GOOD ENOUGH.

THIS TEAM CAN CHALLENGE FOR TROPHIES.

Whatever happens from now on, those statements remain true.

  362. WHo will be returning on 18-April?

    Sagna? Djourou?
Gibbs to shake off his ankle injury?
Alumnia and Clichy to make speedy recoveries?

  363. @Once a Foreever Gunner

How to overcome Chelsea ? – Play our football.

  364. Nick Collins (Skysports) live at the emirates has just reported no injuries appear from tonights game

  365. “I had the sound turned off and listened to ATVO commentary. Clearly a sound decision on my part.”

Yes, a sound decision; and what is more, a good decision.

  366. I totally agree with FunGunner…

Every one that was saying this team is not good enough, can shut it now.

We are on equal footing with all the so called “Fancy Schmancy” clubs with less than %25 of the cost. We can challenge for any thing and without all the never ending injuries we could easily win no less than a double trophies a season.

Come On Arsenal. Let’s blow The Mancs out of the way to the Final. See you in Roma Barcelona…it’s where it all started coming through for us.

    I believe we can fly…

  367. Playing our football, then the Wigan scenario is going to happen again:

Chelsea leading by some headers at halftime. At the end of 2nd half, they tired out (Essien and Lampard are stamina monsters. Don’t think they will be tired out but cannot say the same for the other Chelsea players). Then we start a late comeback to finish the game off.

Hope this will happen and Everton finishes off Man U please. We are going to play Man U 3 times and I will feel sick to face them again…….

  368. “I believe we can fly…”

Yay! In an R Kelly way, not an Orville the Duck the way.

    ****
    Poliziano
    lol
It was a good sound decision.

  369. Queen of Suburbia

So proud of our team tonight and so pleased for Arsene.

No Gallas, No Arshavin, No Eddie, No Rosicky, No Clichy, No Almunia, No Sagna.

No Flamini, No Hleb, No Henry, No Vieira.

Proof that this squad is deep enough?

  370. Non Edible Nacho

“The commentators on Setanta are Howard and Arse21.”

    Hahah.

  371. Queen of Suburbia

Got the feeling Diaby is going to have a stormer against Chelsea.

    Just have this hunch.

  372. NEN…You’re probably right. :)

  373. I feel for Casley Cole missing a face-off with Messi…the chavs have no other left back either loool

  374. Queen of Suburbia

By “feel for”, you mean “loathe and despise” right, Maria?

  375. Maria…Cashley probably ran away from Messi on purpose…he’s not match for the kid, and his ass would finish the game coloured green.

  376. what a result! Now lets spank the Mancs into oblivion. Great performances from everyone. Song was a real rock again. and Eboue ably deputised at L8 and great link up play with Theo. Arsenal Uefa 2009 Champipns League winners here we come.

  377. Queen of Suburbia

They always lose when they come back don’t they?

Let that be a warning to you Mr Henry.

  378. Just being my sarcastic self QueenofS just had a Chelski fan calling me complaining about Casley and all i wa thinking is look behind you……..does’nt seem to think Henry on the left is a threat…1 season away and people forget the old master….

  379. Just on my way back home from the game and I had to stop off and say that Eboue was great at right back, so composed on the ball. Alex Song was pure class once again. I am so proud of the team. Bring us the head of Fergie

  380. Well down mean lean..i loved the noise of the crowd tonight you did the team proud!!

  381. What a fantastic night – the boys done us proud. I couldn’t possibly pick a MOTM as I thought they were all giants. Villareal were a damp squib on the night – without Senna they are nothing. Talk about a one man team. As for all that talk about Ade not being impressive, is that the reason he was man marked throughout the first half? The one time he got away in the second half, he made them pay and he showed those Ade bashers a thing or two.

The crowd were great and gave Robert Pires a fantastic reception. I’m sure he will be thrilled with the send off he got from the gooners.

Once a gooner, just enjoy the victory for tonight, we’ll worry about the chavs later. Remember the CC final Cesc, Diaby, Denilson and Walcott played that day and ran rings around their midfield. They are older and wiser now and the chavs are even more ‘mature’ – if Liverpool can score 4… No fear!

  382. ….that was well done….

  383. Eboue has been excellent for us in the Champion’s League this season.

  384. hey guys were can i find some highlights i missed most of the match with those dire streams….

  385. we love you ARSENAL…yes we DO!!!

Fantastic match, Song was sublime. What a top class performer. He grows and grows with every match. For that back line to pitch a clean sheet just is excellent! What a confidence boost. Fabianski was absolutely brilliant with his reads and came out to clear exactly when he needed to in order to make up the lack of pace in the back.

Great match and I even found people to sing with here in Denver, Colorado!!

  386. P.S. honourable mention for Sylvestre who was immense at the back. He may not be as fast as he was, but he really showed his experience with his positioning. Also the way he joined in the celebration dance he really seems to have settled well with his team mates.

  387. Yea…..We find Ade Impressive…

    ……So, F*ck Off Senna.

  388. I agree i hope the team and Cesc gave them the congruts that they deserve the back four were sublime…..and who knew Eboue and Theo would player so well togather….MOTM for me has to be Song even though he had a yellow to his name and was at risk of missing out on the next game he went in for every tackle….and to think Cameroon had the cheek not to call him up last international break…

  389. Oh yeah any ideas on were to find highlights…?

  390. Maria,

as strange as it sounds I usually check youtube about an hour after a match, sort by time added, and have been fairly successful in finding highlights that way. Also footytube (do a google search) usually has highlights.

  391. Click on my name Maria

  392. cheers gris gris…just found one….

  393. http ://www .101 greatgoals .com/

    Without the spaces

  394. Gris Gris if you ever come to PHX AZ, let me know…we can watch a game together man.

I will do the same if I visit CO :)

  395. Home from the match, a little worse for (alcoholic) wear.
I’m impressed, we got through a CL qtr final with our reserve goalie, right back and left back and out 4th choice centre back.

Can’t split RVP and Song for MOTM.

The guys who came in – Fabianski, Gibbs, Silvestre, Eboue – all did us proud.

Say what you like about Ade – but another big game and another great finish.

Proud of the crowd as well, great vocal support tonight – and a brilliant reception for Bobby Pires, before/during/after the game.

    Arsenal.
    A Proper Football Club.

Bring on Chelski. Bring on Liverpool. Bring on the Mancs.

    I’m tingling !!

  396. Just watched the hightlights on Arsenalonline….check out the beginning Song is pulling on his shorts in the tunnel when everyone’s ready to come out….lool….you gotta love him!!

  397. Song should show all Arsenal fans never to write off a young player before he has developed.

He has been incredibly consistent in the last few games.

Fantastic performance from everyone out there, they all put in a shift for the side. What is great to know is that they are all going to get even better.

I love this club! I love this team.

  398. well we love you mean lean and your site!!!

  399. Thank you Maria, Maria!! You remind me of a westside story! Just living your life just like a movie star! :D

  400. Thats great Passenal, looks like the dancing is catching on.

The reception for Bobby Pires was quite amazing. I could almost feel his emotion at the end when we were signing his name.

The crys of ‘You’ll always be a Gooner’ almost made me well up.

    What an amazing night.

  401. Passenal thank god your here my sister and i are having a debate on who was dancing with Ade and eboue…..cesc or Rvp?? any links or confirmed reports??

@ Mean Lean…..i was trying to explain hvaing to put our shades game on lock etc but the old fuggies here weren’t to impressed…they don’t realise they have a fellow moviestar gooner amongst them nor that with the way this team is shining their direct light will in fact blind them…..looool

  402. The team are shining so bright, the sun would have problems looking at our games. ok, maybe that was bad! :D

Right it is bed for me, up at stupid o’clock. Still buzzing from the game. Need a warm glass of milk and a cookie! Does a warm glass of milk really help you sleep? Or is that just a load of rubbish?

Anyhooooo! Nite all, One love to all Gooners out there.

  403. I love the Wenger-Dance….

  404. California Gooner

Mean Lean, I know what you mean, Alex Song has looked very good. But “incredibly consistent in the last few games” sounds a bit oxymoronic! I think consistent implies a bit more than a few games.

  405. Do not be naive! Just check it out what is soccer magic.

    http://www.nowgoal.com/18.shtml

  406. Link for highlights Maria,

  408. I got my maths wrong.

    Few Games = Since January

  409. I was the game last night. Sung my heart out just like 59,000 other supporters.

What a brilliant game! Song was immense.

I didn’t get home until 1am though and lost my voice in the process but it was worth today for yesterday!

  410. Song was immense in the match!

  411. one down two to go …

  412. …excellent game…the crowd were up for a sing song which is great…great when we are winning……nice if we can do that when the team need us most as well…..the whole team were superb…special mentions for Song, RvP, Eboue, Gibbs, Fabianski, Walcott…..Diaby looking strong when he came on………

…..so good to be able to say goodbye properly to RP7 and it was nice that 15,000 supporters stayed to the final whistle to cheer him off….

  413. Interesting how everyone has been claiming that ” This was Song’s best game in an arsenal shirt” for the last 2 months. Every game has been his best performance. Must really be improving then in the eyes of the doomers as well.

  414. lol@ Franks 15000 supporters stayed to the end to cheer him off!

  415. Have you all read the news? It’s fantastic. Man. Utd, the Champions of the World thrashed Eurppean Giants Porto, 1-0. Absolutely brilliant.

Oh, and another English club, called Arsehole or something, squeezed past a crap Spanish team.

  416. Why even read the sports pages?

  417. Why do their opinions matter?

  418. The back pages are written by journalists who can’t get published on the front pages. Yes, it’s true, such people exist – incredible as it might seem.

  419. ….complex issue…change comes about by promoting the good and ripping the heart out of the bad…..

  420. Congrats to all gunners far and near! Slowly bit surely we are getting there… very happy for the team

  421. Blimey, Hasn’t this Garside character read the script? He’ll be up in front of the editor later this morning.

  422. ….somehow we need to turn online journalism, which sadly includes blogging, to a force for the good…or at least shift the balance a bit so that the sh*t does not predominate….in an Arsenal/Football context promoting good sites such as ACLF helps….in fact the fight is not just against poor journalism it is against poor support and a cripplingly poor football establishment….ACLF sits at the confluence of all of this…

  423. I really think we’re going to win this you know. Its starting to feel like we have the right momentum.

I’d love Barca in the final.

We were the best side in Europe that year and revenge will be ours!

  424. Patrick Barclay in The Times today, also very complimentary and bullish towards Arsenal and AW.

  425. I wouldn’t mind other blogs having the odd negative moment if it was at least well written, Frank.

Thankfully, the stream of conciousness drivel that permeates a lot of Arsenal Blogs doesn’t see the light of day here.

  426. Paddy Barclay was on the radio yesterday and basically said “I wish I was an Arsenal supporter, it must be great to be an Arsenal supporter”.

I enjoy watching him on Sunday Supplement, the other cretins come across even more imbecilic than their writing next to him.

  427. Song was absolutely immense last night, the best player on the pitch by far… Arsenal’s most improved player this season by far… finally, Arsenal & AW are proving their point – BRILLIANT!

  428. I have nothing interesting or analytical to say this morning because what really needs to be said anyway? All I wanna do this morning is simply declare my love for Arsenal!

There is still work to do, but on this platform of greatness we can cruise to great victories. We’ve got too much pride now to let anyone push us over now. Opponents, pretenders; drool at our attacking trio of Walcott, Adebayor and van Persie. Watch in awe at how Fabregas’ creative genius links up with Walcott’s pace down the flank. Try to battle your way through Song and Denilson. Don’t even think about taking on the trickery of Arshavin and Nasri. You’ll never beat the Arsenal.

  429. We are still the outsiders 4th favourite for CL. The pressure is off. Like I said we will gun them down on by one. As usual I do not expect any favours from the press it going to get even worst as the Manure dominated media will try every tick in the book to put our confidence down. Anyway Chelsea next and that what matters now.
I only read Patrick Barclay’s articles a great journalist.

  430. It’s funny how the hacks are now lining up to praise Wenger and the team, when they lacked the vision to see what a lot of us here could see coming a mile off!

  431. oh la la……….still have my shades on!!

  432. Another thought from last night was how much Theo has improved since coming to Arsenal. I read somewhere yesterday where he was referred to as the ‘Southampton educated product’ sorry, but he was made at Arsenal. When he first arrived all he had to offer was speed. Now he is more intelligent in his use of the ball and even tried out the TH trick of passing into space and then outpacing the defender to get to the ball – very impressive and something he would not have learned at Southampton!

  433. Passenal,

Praise Wenger? You don’t need to far to check that they’re still degrading him. Check out LG’s yesterday’s article. I’m not even sure if these so called supporters get happy when we win. Maybe deep down, they want us to lose, so that their views and perspective are deemed correct.

  434. Morning All!

How good was Song last night?

Surely our most improved player of the year… :-)

In fact, based purely on last nights performance, he was the stand out guy in centre mid… ;-)

Say it quietly though, its just not trendy to say that you like Song….

  435. Agreed Ateeb. Yesterdays post was apparently an attempt to be motivational.

That’s why it started with Denilson isn’t good enough and Wenger tells lies.

  436. Ah, but it all must be true QoS, because ‘The Oracle’ can see all, and what he says must be adhered too….

  437. At one point last night I thought Gonzalo was going to have a seizure. Ade ran him ragged.

  438. Now … chelski chavs …

We don’t need any journalists out there … the performance, the results, the spirit and the style, the youth and exhuberance speak more powerfully …

  439. loooooooooooooooool….mr.song….again i am being made fun off….i feel like i am Song of le grove!!!!!!!!!!

  440. DROGBA is going to make Mikeal cry…or so i hear ZP

  441. lol Ole Gunner

    ****
    @Passenal,
” I read somewhere yesterday where he was referred to as the ‘Southampton educated product’ ”
Oh, yes. It just sticks in the craw of some people to give credit where it’s due…if it’s due to AW or Arsenal.

“Another thought from last night was how much Theo has improved since coming to Arsenal. ”

And how much he has improved since last season as well. Then, he was a force going forward but didn’t “do” defending, but this season, especially since returning from injury, he has closed down, tracked back and tackled with the best!

  442. I don’t give a flying monkeys what the hacks say any more. As far as I am concerned they are outsiders looking in and have absolutely nothing to do with football. We, the fans have more importance in the game than they do. They are actually below us. We only become ‘victims’ of them when we pay them the time and attention they thrive off. The more ignorant you are of the press, the better. Nothing they print, publish or fabricate will ever matter or mean anything to me. Arsenal is a million times more powerful, poignant and worthy than anything they’re capable of producing. At best they are coke-snorting cowards hiding behind a desk, wishing they’d been a footballer instead of a leech. **** ‘em.

  443. Wise words, Blackstock!

  444. It is going to be a great end of season, these big games are what we live for…

If we can keep Drogba quiet on Saturday, we should be in good shape…. ;-)

  445. I was trying to google map his house Matt no luck…..

  446. Alex Song for player of the month. He looked like Ruud Gullit yesterday.

Jesus, the pace we had in the team yesterday! Ade and Walcott can wreck any defence is they attack with so much pace. It was dizzying to watch at times.

  447. “And how much he has improved since last season as well. Then, he was a force going forward but didn’t “do” defending, but this season, especially since returning from injury, he has closed down, tracked back and tackled with the best!”

You’re absolutely right FunGunner – his defensive awareness has been noticeable recently. He has really become an all rounder.

  448. Keep trying Mariam! :-)

  449. Stringfellow Hawke

Got to laugh at other blogs, they ban people who make them look silly, its flipping hillarious.

  450. Its easy to reach for the ban button if you can’t debate in a reasonable manner Stringfellow.

  451. I have sold my soul people, i have just accepted a corporate ticket for Saturday so that my friend can have my ticket and go to the game…..

Oh well, i can promise i will not be one of those Wembley types who doesn’t make it back for the start of the second half… ;-)

  452. Enjoy it Matt – I’m not jealous at all, this green tinge on my face is due to illness – really!
