Adebayor, An Old Footballing Clichy & JR Strikes Back

With international fervour swiftly passing me by, it is just as well that the Togo team coach is happy to pick Emmanuel Adebayor, for it seems no-one else is. Having approved of his departure to be Cheerleader In Chief, the Arsenal manager is apparently unhappy that Adebayor will play against Cameroon. As it happens, the return to fitness of Walcott and Eduardo almost negate those fears. If Adebayor aggravates his injury and is out for say, a week, we have different options. On the other hand, he could come back a little sharper than he was before.

I suspect Arsene would prefer he did not play and that the boy is fit for Manchester City as a substitute, perhaps starting in the Champions League quarter final first leg as a different option to Bendtner. Much will depend on his fitness, obviously, but more importantly, his touch. Villarreal are a similar team to Arsenal, the major difference appears to be their inability to keep things tight defensively with three clean sheets in their last nineteen games not being a record they will be entirely proud of. If Arsenal are to profit in Spain, a sharp Adebayor is essential if he starts although that assumes Wenger does not go with Eduardo instead.

Not that it matters because he is off to Milan thanks to a £35m bid being prepared that is in no way related to the bid of a similar amount last year that was talked up by Team Adebayor and no-one else. There is something about the Milanese and Arsenal though, they have to sign two of our players or none at all. Luckily they want Gael Clichy as well. Might be a bit of a problem on the cash front though as his Mr20% reckons Arsenal rejected a £23m bid from Manchester City in January which means the Italians would need to find around £70m for the pair. Still when they sell Kakakakakakaka to Real in July, it shouldn’t be a problem. Gael may like to ponder the point made in the Daily Telegraph about players who leave Arsenal. They are all doomed, I tell you.

It was with a warm heart that I read the translation of Samir Nasri‘s interview with L’Equipe. Aah but why, I hear you ask? Well, not just that he quashed the comparisons with Zinedine Zidane, just about the only thing he did not say was “I want to be the first Samir Nasri“, although that may have meant talking in the third person about yourself, a truly scary linguistic event. No, it was the use of the word ‘blather‘ by the translator. A good old-fashioned English word (from 1524, no less) that has disappeared into the ether of time, along with ‘tish‘, ‘tosh‘, ‘piffle‘ and ‘codswallop‘. There is of course, a derivation that is not much different in construct but it is an old Swiss word, ‘blatter‘, which is a harsher way of saying ‘full of sh*t‘.

Nasri though is looking towards a time when he can play more regularly in the centre of midfield, believing that the absence of a strictly defensive midfielder should not be a barrier to him partnering Cesc Fabregas on a more permanent basis:

I am not against playing in a more defensive role. I quite like it – you start from far away and you are face-to-face with the action. Is it exhausting to work from box to box? It depends with who you are playing with. Flamini and Fabregas were complementary with Arsenal last year. The second one should not attack often.

I see no problem with Nasri in the middle but to have him holding back to cover another player is not the most formidable barrier to a swift counter-attack at this moment in time. His choice to compare himself with Cesc and Flamini is not wide of the mark although I would cast him more of a Fabregas than anything else. Flamini had a solid grounding in the defensive role and was comfortable enough with its’ duties to play at left back. That is not a position that I would even vaguely consider Nasri for as it would a waste of his not inconsiderable talents.

John Radford no less, believes that Arsene may have been blattering on when he spoke of the title:

Well, Wenger is confident of his team all the time and while there are points left to be played for we can hope, but just to finish in the top four, after all we have put up with this season, would be brilliant. And who knows? Maybe we can finish higher. It is in our reach and we have to be confident.

Raddy was more optimistic about the Champions League and FA Cup challenges:

We’re still in the FA Cup and Champions League, and the way we are beginning to get our act together, I honestly think we can win one, if not both of them

Nothing like blind optimism, more of it from ex-pros turned pundits would not go amiss. Radford’s description of being in ‘dreamland‘ if old big ears is delivered and I suspect that a fair number of supporters would die happy men and women if it happened, completing the full set of trophies in a lifetime. Aah but what of the World Club Championship, I hear you ask. Well, technically, Arsenal did win that in 1989 or 1988 when they beat Independiente 1 – 0, I think, in Miami. Not the full blown FIFA version but a match billed as that nonetheless so having won the Premier League, First Division, FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield, Fairs Cup and Cup Winners Cup, the Champions League is the last trinket to adorn the trophy cabinet. And why list that little lot? No reason other than it is nice to remember a slice of the club’s history.

Anyway, off we trot from that. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Gunners Fans Forever

Nice Post Again Yogi! A Cultured Left Foot is one of the best Arsenal Blog that I have been following. Keep up the good work!

  2. Love that list at the end Yogi! It would be marvelous to complete it…

  3. I miss Flamini but I think we should sign Rooney in the off season, then we can rival Stoke and Delap with the long throw tactic

  4. lol.. good one oz gooner…

  5. The blatter pun made me laugh so much a little bit of wee came out. Top post, YW, as always,

    Thanks.

  6. Methinks that you are a trifle more ascerbic these days Yogi. It becomes you.

    Leave the balderdash to others.

    Blatter…hahahahahaha!

  7. Andy B,

    What?

  8. Nasri’ s best position is through the center, but what do we do because we have an abundance of options there. I have said before he is wasted on the wing. its obviously not going to work with him and fab. or is it?? and if fab does decide to leave then we have nasri to replace him god forbid though!!

  9. Frank's biggest fan

He is not wasted on the wings. He is played there, because Arsene’s wingers generally cut-in, and offer creativity through the center, and our fullbacks offer width.

  10. Great blog, great article. Especially as it is international week.

I would like to keep Clichy, Ade can go, however, we should replace him.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  11. well he can play on the wing in a five man midfield but not a four. What i mean is like against wigan and bolton for example he was tucked to the wing in a 4-4-2 and was wasted out there. yes you are right FBF, if he is allowed to cut in and roam about then there is no problem its just when he is stuck out on the wing that he is wasted which has happened a couple o times this season.

  12. Another good blog! Now the game in miami against Independente was the game where Rocky went over and swallowed his tongue, Gary Lewin ran on and removed the tongue saving his life. Lewin then got a red card by the twat ref for entering the field of play without consent.

  13. You have got a memory Darren. Good one.

  14. Yep..the puns are good, yogi…but Andy B – TMI perhaps..??

GOOD morning, Consols ~ good to see you alive and kicking.

  15. Wouldnt let Ade go – but i suppose every player has his price. Bendtner had looked OK lately, but he his very young and needs to show consistency. We cant get rid of Ade and pile that pressure onto the other young forwards.

The way i see it, we keep them altogether, have a big squad filled with a mix of young and experienced quality who rotate and share the pressure. Players like Ade, Rosicky, Eduardo, Cesc, Toure & Gallas have many games under their belts. We have got a nice blend right now, i dont agree with any1 who says we are too young, because they aint exactly new on the block.

Even players like Denilson, Song, and Gibbs have been in and out of Wengers teams for a while. Song being on loan also to former Premiership club Charlton.

My point is keep them altogether… fighting for each other… playing for each other… there is no better feeling than playing in a team with people u feel comfortable around. If I was wenger i wouldnt consider any offers for any players…. the only player i would consider selling would be Rosicky, not down to talent, but down to whether we can get any game time from him. Van Persie (touch wood) seems to have got over it. If Rosicky can we have an abundance of attacking talent:

    Walcott/Arshavin/Nasri/Rosicky/Vela/Eboue

All runners with the ball and frighten defenders.

  16. DukeGoonem

Its a tricky one fitting Nasri in i think – Wenger allows his wide players to roam into certain areas, and the Wing Backs {if i can call them that} to over lap. Arshavin looks more the finished article, he doesnt seem to play the ball around etc like Nasri, he is more direct and goes straight for the kill. Think Arshavin is better suited on the wing now, but if you stick him behind a front man he we cause mayhem. Nasri is good for creating and keeping our passing intact from other areas, be it on the wing or CM its just a matter of getting the right balance in midfield.

A midfield of: Arshavin-Nasri-Cesc-Walcott in my eyes will keep the ball enough and attack enough to win games. But in the long run against certain opposition we will struggle with height and on the break. You cant play a Zidane in a CM role expecting him to defend. Cesc plays with his heart and puts in his shift – but his instincts are to attack, same as Nasri, Theo and Arsh.. We need a balance no matter what.

  17. Agree chrisGOONA.. but someone’s going to be warming that bench just a touch too much.. and that’s some wages we’re dishing out..

  18. Ponyboy

If we can keep them all happy then why not, we are always complaining that the squad is never big enough. When it seems to be big we are hit by injuries, as long as we can afford to hang onto them and Wenger keeps them all happy and giving them game time i dont see a problem.

I do agree that someone will be getting benchtime when they are all fit. We have i think 6 quality strikers!

  19. Yeah.. if we can keep them all happy – what a strikeforce! :-)

Amazing to think of all the clamouring for new signings last summer, looking back.

  20. I would admit that Nasri has been wasted on the wing compared to what Arshavin has been showing, playing in the same position.
Nasri can play as N0 8, 10 and 7; I doubt he will do well when Fabregas is occupying N0 6 position, as we could suffer in midfield, being too lightweight. Nasri and Fabregas will suit more a formation of 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1, making sure that one of Diaby and Song is in the mix. But AW likes playing 4-4-2 formation, this could be a problem when Fabregas comes back. I hope AW won’t go back to the tactics that mad us lightweight in middle (at the beginning of the season) when Cesc comes back.

    For example: 4-3-3.

    3- Denilson- Diaby- Cesc.
3- Nasri- Ade (or Bentner)- Arshavin.

    4-2-3-1,

    2- Denilson- Diaby(or Song).
    3- Nasri- Cesc- Arshavin.
    1- Ade or Bentner.

    4-4-2.

4- Eboue- Cesc (or Nasri)- Song (or Diaby)- Arshavin.

2- Ade (or Bentner)- Eduardo (or RVP).

This in my opinion will keep the team ceative and strong in midfield.

  21. Nasri is going to miss the first two months of next season anyway.

Alvin and the chipmunks have reformed and are playing ten dates in august and september at the 02 Arena. Little Theodore has a back problem so they’ve called up the forgotten brother, Little Sami.

  22. I’d rather we just keep the entire squad together than buy or sell any players at all. As we all know though, “keeping the entire squad together” is not always as simple as it seems unless you’re willing to smash the wage structure to pieces.

Love him or loathe him, the Togolese Marmite Man is still a valuable addition to the squad. BUT if I was in Wenger’s shoes, and Milan offered me Pato and Flamini in return for Adebayor then hmm… i’d consider that a very, very good deal.

  23. Well i think next season if no players bugger off(slim chance). we will have the best squad for sure.

    al
    bacary.toure.gallas.clichy
    eboue.fabregas.denilson.arshavin
    rvp.ade

    bench of..eduardo,walcott,nasri,rosicky,bendtner,song,diaby,vela.

f*ck about what a bench that is.

  24. Blog Head, you’re a moron.

YW note – Agreed which is why the comment this refers to has been deleted.

  25. crafty bison,

Tell me something I dont know big nose

  26. You’d honestly start Eboue with them players on the bench?

    Who’s the moron?

  27. Hey lc you forgot Vela, Gibbs, Traore and Simpson. Oh and of course Jack.

  28. Does everyone forget we still have Senderos on our books his Milan move is only a loan.

  29. I’d start Nasri above Eboue tbh..

  30. Alex Ice Cream

    Blackstock,

Pato and Flamini for Ade. Please, please, please although one would have to question Flamini’s motivation. We also wouldn’t pay him 120k a week to play or sit on the bench.

  31. Klon,
I did not forget them, because I am trying to fugure out a formation that could accomodate Cesc/Nasri without affecting the balance in midfield as we ‘ve suffered earlier in the season against team like Hull, Fulham… You can see that I did not even include Walcott. It wasn’t a team selection, but a team structure to strike the right balance.

  32. Interesting formations lc. What about the xmas tree that Milan like. Also, I think the 4-2-3-1 is becoming more in fashion in the premier league. Benitez has started playing it although the pundits keep calling it a 4-5-1 it’s really a 4-2-3-1.

Here’s the xmas tree just for discussion. It is an absolutely insane attacking formation in this iteration. No defense, just attack! As such I doubt we’ll ever see it but it would be interesting!

    almunia
    sagna gallas toure clichy
    walcott fabregas nasri
    arshavin van persie
    adebayor

Now that I look at that I don’t like it that much. your 4-2-3-1 is a better option I think.

  33. Blog Head

What do you mean by ‘you lot’ … who do you support??

Eboue has 3 goals in his last 3 games??… not bad dont u think considering he was only subbed on in the last 10 mins or so.. Eboue scares the life out of defenders when driving forward… ok he falls down alot, dives a bit, and acts like a spoilt brat sometimes.. but he can be very effective. Every Arsenal fan who follows every game knows that he has alot in his locker to offer if we can get him to apply himself properly. I think he is maturing of late, but i dont want to open my mouth too soon!

  34. AIC, Milan will never give up Pato. He is the only young player they have with any skill!

  35. Ade over Pato any day of the week for me. Ade’s proven as a striker. Pato’s a great player but he hasnt proven himself yet.

  36. And wenger wil never take back Flamini.

Blog head sounds like a spud what with his shite jokes and all.

  37. Gris Gris,

I think Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal is definitely set up to play 4-4-2 .

The team is right now able to play 4-2-3-1 but that’s only because it’s similar to the 4-2-4 our 4-4-2 often morphs into.

4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 are not compatible with Wengerball in my opinion.

  38. Gris Gris,
4-5-1 can be seen as 4-2-3-1 if the 5 contains two defensive midfielders; but I think it’s much closer to 4-3-3 that uses often on single defensive midfield and the other two are attacking midfield.
With 4-2-3-1, the team is much well balanced, because when the 3 are attacking, the 2 are making sure that they are killing off any counter-attack. But you’ve got to have the players to make it effective just like Liverpool are doing very well with it at the moment.

  39. Wenger wil change his formation according to need and players available and fresh. He has experimented this season very effectively.

With a squad like we have now, and I really don’t want anybody to leave, then he has to rotate and that means changes in formation. Our options would seem to suggest that we could play any formation effectively.

We will have to wait and see I suppose. I couldn’t pick our strongest 11. Could anybody else?

  40. Ole Gunner, agree matey

but at least we have a different formation we can call apon that we now know works. Wenger isnt always going to stick to a 4-4-2. We know champions league away games he will use a sort of 4-5-1 with possibly 2 attacking midfielders. Football is evolving constantly, but i always think 2 up front works alot better, better games of football as well. Just how many other teams right now dare to do it??

  41. lc,

4-3-3 couldnt be more unlike 4-2-3-1. But you’re right that it’s effectively a 4-5-1 when the team is defending. In a 4-2-3-1 you keep 9 men behind the ball when defending. But like a 4-3-3 it aint.
    ——

I still think our strongest team is:

    RVP Ade

    Rosicky Denilson Fabregas Arshavin

    Clichy Gallas Toure Sagna

  42. Ole G,
That team lacks balance in middle.
Cesc/Denilson won’t win us many games, we ‘ve payed the price earlier after beating Manu, playing Cesc/Denilson, AW thought he had found his best team; he went on with that formation, and we’ve got crushed by Fulham, hull and even M.city by 3 goals to nothing.
Our best players don’t necessarely makes up our best team to win us games.

  43. lc,

I think you might have missed the order of things.

As I remember it, Cesc didnt play against Fulham. Against Hull we actually had 3 early chances that RVP and Ade fluffed. And we hit the bar. They were lucky to get the win, off a fluke goal.

Against Man City, Cesc did not play, and we had 5 regulars missing in Adebayor, RVP, Gallas, Toure, Sagna,….

About the midfield balance, I disagree. Rosicky defends very well, and he’s very mobile. Denilson seems settled into his defensive duties. Arshavin has sometimes looked good defensively, and at other times not been very good defensively. If Cesc puts in his shift in defending, we’d have no problem. It’s the same formation we played last season sans Flamini and Hleb. Arshavin takes the Hleb role and I think denilson has done as well this season as Flamini did last season in shielding the defence.

I think the formation lacks height. That I’d give you.

But again, I think those are the best players we have in each position, not necessarily the ideal combo of players.

You might want to bring Diaby in to provide physical presence and height in the middle.

  44. Ic -
Yeah, agree – depending on how Ade returns. Since Bendy’s goal, who can really be sure!
AW has gone from picking bare bones to an embarrassment of riches.

Guess each game will require a slightly different 11 (or, 14) – endless speculation and fun!

  45. We’ve always been accused of not having a “plan B”. With the squad we now have we can adjust the team according to the opponents. We also now have much better cover for injuries (no more please!) if/when we sustain them. If we want to make a serious go of winning the League and CL plus the FA cup we are going to need a big squad. There should be enough games to keep the players happy.

  46. I have just watched Tomas Rosicky’s interview and he seems so eager to get back playing. He is a super super player, one of my favourites.

I cannot wait to see the Arshavin, Cesc and Rosicky link up.

    Mouthwatering stuff!

  47. Pure height and physicality:

    Sagna – Toure/Silvestre – Djourou – Clichy
    Fabregas – Song
    Eboue – Diaby – Traore/Bendtner
    Adebayor

Not suggesting that we actually play this team, but it shows how if we wanted to, we could actually put out a very physical side. Blackburn and Bolton ain’t got nothing on this!

  48. Ole G,
I know your love of Cesc is such that you are not easy with anyone associating him with bad results; but for fact you can review our league games on Arsenal main page if you are registered. I can guaranty you that Cesc fabregas has played all these games we’ve lost, including Ade; Eboue was the only absentee during that bad period. We were just not winning after beating Manu.

  49. I would like to see a 4-1-4-1 like this

    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Song
    RVP/Walcott Cesc Nasri/Diaby AA/Eduardo
    Ade/NB

With the likes of Eboue, Vela, Gibbs, Tarore on the bench & starting some PL, FA Cups, CL (in group games once we have qualified). In any case if we are involved in all the 3 tournaments till the business end, the games come thick & fast as well as the injuries that everyone will get a fair amount of playing time & not tiring out any.

  50. Oops, ofcourse with JD in the mix as well along with Toure & Gallas, any 2 of those 3.

  51. lc,

Here are the lineups for the 3 referenced games:

Fulham at Craven Cottage: Alm, Sag, Tou, Gal, Gae, wal, nas, ebo, den, ade, rvp. No Cesc.

Man City: Al, Hoyte, Djo, Sil, Cli, nas, den, son, dia, rvp, ben. No Cesc. Cesc was suspended.

Hull….Cesc played as I said before. He also played against Stoke City….And against Aston Villa.

But my point is that We didn’t lose against Fulham, Hull and City because we played Cesc-denilson.

  52. Siva, now that’s an interesting formation. Love it, actually. Would be quite fluid and with Song mopping up in front of the back line it could be quite good. Would morph into a 4-3-2-1 possibly when defending?

  53. OG,

Don’t forget that Denilson has really grown since the start of the season. He has shown improvments on all fronts, and his defensive side is alot better. After Cesc departure he has played almost every game, and is deffinately one of the most consistent players this season. So the Cesc-Denilson partnership, can only work better than before this time.

  54. Alex Ice Cream

    Ole,

Ade has had 1 good season which doesn’t make him proven in my opinion. Even if it did attitude-wise he is a different player to last season. A switched on Ade is a handful for anyone so let’s hope that this version is the one who returns from Togo.

I agree that Pato isn’t proven either but AW really rates him and he has scored goals this season. I agree that AC won’t sell though.

  55. Alex Ice Cream

    Ateeb,

Let’s hope you are right. The problem we have yet to solve in midfield is who is to partner Cesc. Diaby/Denilson/Song all have their merits but have yet to show that they are the right choice.

We’ll see when Cesc gets back from injury. As you say all these players have improved in Cesc’s absence so it is up to one of them to cement their place next to Cesc.

If they are not up to it then AW will have to buy a world-class player in the summer. Cesc cannot wait any longer to have someone good enough next to him and why should he. If one of the above can do it then great, if not someone must be bought.

  56. Why the he** would we wanna get Pato? We already have good young prospects in Vela and bendtner? And if we let Ade go, don’t you think that people would start complaining again about the lack of experience.

  57. “If they are not up to it then AW will have to buy a world-class player in the summer.”

What do you mean if they’re not upto it? If anything the last 10 games has proven it’s that Denilson, Diaby and Song are good enough to play next to Cesc. I wasnt critical of Denilson in the start of the season either. It wasnt Denilson who was putting in bad performances, it was Cesc. Maybe fatigue from the Euros or something. But Denilson was playing quite well, when Cesc returns he needs to adapt to whoever plays next to him. If that means a bit of defensive duties than sure, why not? As long as the team works better. A one dimentional defensive midfielder is the last thing I want to see playing next to Cesc.

  58. I really can’t see Arsene buying another midfielder unless Cesc was to leave and I can’t see him leaving. How many midfielders do you want AIC?

We are all sitting here trying to work out how to squeeze all our talent into one team and you think there is not enough. I think you are on your own on this one. On this blog at least.

  59. AIC,

Adebayor singlehandedly took Togo to the World Cup. Togo is a tiny African nation of maybe 2 million without a professional league, and maybe a total of 30 professional footballers.

I knew of this in 2006 at the World Cup. And the next season, what did he do for us? Score 30 goals!

And the next, despite 2 injury spells, and a period of bad form, he’s next top highest scorer for us. He’s already the highest scoring player in the North London derby. He scored 50 goals for us in less than 3 seasons.

To me that’s a proven striker. Tell me what your own standard is, and watch us eliminate many strikers we all rail about.

  60. Morning/Afternoon all!

What is with the world class talk? Is it me or has this team moved on to the Quater finals of the CL without Cesc?

The team is playing incredible without Cesc, scoring three goals per match and all that good stuff.

Look I love Cesc and the lot but if anyone cant wait, peace out!

    NO FEAR!!!

  61. Paulie Walnuts

The big problem we`ll have is hanging on to our players over the next couple of years.

The Milan`s are already sniffing & Barca would gladly take several off our hands. I`ve seen Abidal & Clichy is twice the player.

If we can keep everyone I can only see room for maybe another full back as cover for Sagna & perhaps an older keeper as third choice (a bit like Poom).

Other than that we won`t need anyone. This team is only a couple of years away from maturing together.

  62. Is it me, or does Arse21, Blog Head and Bentley the flying spur sound like the same person?

    hmmmm.

  63. Alex Ice Cream

    Ole,

Some good games for Togo and 1 30 goal season is not enough to be “proven”. Let’s see what he does from now on. Proven in my opinion means that you have consistently scored goals for a period of time. Ade’s goalscoring record for Monaco was poor and adequate for us in his first season and this. That makes 1 season out of about 4.5 which is not enough.

Villa, Torres, Henry, Etoo, Ronaldo, Gerrard, Lampard are all proven goalscorers, Ade is not yet.

  64. Alex Ice Cream

    Ateeb,

What you say is true but this has not been done playing next to Cesc. From what I’ve seen Denilson looks like he could do it and at time so does Diaby (if he can improve defensively which is not really his game). Song is probably the strongest physically but is not as dynamic.

They all have the potential to be the answer but as of yet have not performed with Cesc and or he has not performed with them next to him.

Until this happens then there is a doubt. If we are to challenge for the Prem next season there cannot be any doubtful positions.

My view is that one of these 3 will be the answer and if not then there is the transfer market.

  65. Alex Ice Cream

    Ateeb,

Where I disagree is that Cesc has to adapt to those around him. This is rubbish. He is our best player and the players around him must adapt to his game, not the other way around.

If they can’t then someone else can.

  66. Thanks GrisG, looks like I missed Denilson out by mistake. I would love to play him but I don’t know where he should in a 4-1-4-1 formation so maybe a conventional 4-4-2 but I can’t even begin to think who would make the starting XI but hey that’s what AW is for ;) I loved his surprise 4-4-1-1 with Nasri in the hole & NB on the wing against Roma in the 1st leg, guess AW would be burning more midnight oil on formations & accommodating the loads of talent happily forgetting the likes of gobgate, 4th place/Villa, etc we have better things to concentrate on.

  67. Alex Ice Cream

    Consols,

I agree that we have loads of midfielders. If we can’t get the best out of Cesc with those we have then others will be needed.

If some players leave as a result then so be it.

I believe that we will find the answer with what we have but until it happens we cannot be 100% sure.

  68. This team will be just fine and players will want to come as we are set to take over world football. Dont get it twisted, as if players will be looking to leave, NO! players will be looking to come!!!!

  69. It’s Ade’s record for Arsenal and Togo that makes him proven. For Arsenal he has a great record. 0.4 goals per game. Already over 50 goals in less than 3 seasons, something it took Rooney till this season to achieve. Extraordinary goalscoring record for Togo, playing in a very very Sh1te team. Even when he played for Monaco, he had a good return per start. Even when he’s off form and injured more of the time this season, he’s our second top scorer. Already highest scorer in the North London derby….That’s proven.

We have no doubt that Adebayor will score goals for Arsenal. 12 goals in 24 starts this season shows this. Keeping the same return, if he plays all of our remaining (potentially) 15 games, he’ll get to 19-20 goals for the season.

  70. Mean Lean,

All 3 are trolls who should be ignored. Only way to deal with trolls.

Did you boys see this post:http://elitefootballtalk.blogspot.com/2009/03/adebayor-neatly-condemns-kaveh-solkehol.html

I thought the reporting of club v country row was disgraceful. If this had happened in the front page of the Times, they’d have had to issue an apology. But the football media are crap, and unaccountable.

  71. AIC,

“Where I disagree is that Cesc has to adapt to those around him. This is rubbish. He is our best player and the players around him must adapt to his game, not the other way around.”

Well if Cesc has to change his game a bit for the very purpose that the team plays better than why not? Sure players need to adjust their game to each other, that is the whole point of team work. To me if we have Denilson in the middle with Cesc, than in games where Cesc is not allowed to play his games(through whatever tactic), we could have another creative outlet in Denilson. And denilson’s defensive side is quite good, as stats have been shown here many times. Im not in favor of a completely one dimentional defensive midfielder.

  72. Mean Lean

    Who cares?

    YW

  73. It’s difficult to judge Ade’s season so far as the whole team was under performing at the start of the season and Ade wasn’t getting the supply of last season. We need to judge him at the end of the season after he has had a run in a full strength team.

I really don’t think it matters how good / bad Ade is, if Milan offer us £35 million we’ll sell. I really don’t see this as a problem – Just think what Wenger could do with £35 million!

  74. Alex, Cesc will be just fine.

He is Number 1, our captain, our leader. F*ck that, as long as Cesc Fabregas is an Arsenal player, he is my GOD. Literally, I could not ask for a better man to be the captain of Arsenal FC right now.

And he ain’t going nowhere just yet, regardless of if he’s playing with a Denilson or a Diaby! Words from his father:

“We are all Barça fans in the family, but everyone must understand that we are with Arsenal. At this moment, he is happy and enjoying himself there. The club values him highly,” he said.

Cesc can adapt to wherever he plays. He loves to play football and I am sure that he could fit in at any club.

“Any person in a job likes it if another company tells them they are fans and that they would like them to join their company.

“Of course, he likes to hear that Barça or Milan or Madrid like him, Anyone would.”

The only thing that I can say about Florentino Perez is that four years ago he came to us and we said no. There was a lot of money on the table and we said no.

“We felt that it was not the best moment for Cesc to move. He has to think of himself and it is not all about money.”

  75. Alex Ice Cream

    Ateeb,

Change his game a bit is fine but not to its overall detriment.

  76. AIC,

When did I claim that I want to see him playing at left back?

  77. California Gooner

You guys sound a bit crazy regarding Pato. If we could get him we would be crazy not to. That guy is an unbelievable talent, something like another Ronaldo. On the other hand, we will NEVER get him and Milan will NEVER let him go anywhere. So I’m not sure where the discussion came from.

On the midfield options, I think we really are overstocked, but that depends on players staying healthy, which never happens. Players like Diaby or Nasri or Eboue, who run hot and cold, will look really, really good when surrounded with the likes of Cesc, Arshivin, Rosicky or Walcott.

  78. Alex Ice Cream

    Ateeb,

Cesc at left back? Oh yes. That must mean that the Clichy to Milan stories are completely true.

  79. If Ronaldo improves his game a notch, he could become the next John Barnes.

  80. If Rooney reduces his weight a notch, he could become the next John Barnes.

  81. “I have just watched Tomas Rosicky’s interview and he seems so eager to get back playing. He is a super super player, one of my favourites.

I cannot wait to see the Arshavin, Cesc and Rosicky link up.

    Mouthwatering stuff!”

    Me too!

  82. i liked Robbie Fowler. Support for the dockers, and doing is best to tell (forget which) ref that he had NOT been fouled by Safe Hands.. then deliberately missing the penalty. Good man; shame he had to be our ‘enemy’.

  83. And good on him for going to OZ.. make a little bread in a new place, instead of sliding down the league and being humiliated.

  84. I afraid the dockers were crooks, Ponyboy.

  85. Denilson was the reason why Cesc played below his set standard at the beginning of the season. When partnering Cesc, Denilson tends to copy Cesc and forget his defensive duties. This compels Cesc to defend and drops his more supporting role for the strikers.

Cesc and Denilson can’t play together. Cesc/Song or Cesc/Diaby is the better pairing.

Those of you hailing Denilson must know that he’s not ready. His passing range is very poor, relying mostly in square passing.

  86. Yes, perhaps. But an honest man. [ For a bindipper, that says a lot!]

Passenal…just watched the Tomas interview; oh, how good to see.. he’s obviously been to hell and back..
Really really good to know he’s – almost – okay.
Liked his way of laughing about it, but the eyes don’t lie..he’s had a torrid year. Also, hadn’t known he’d been in so much constant physical pain. What a hero!

  87. ffs, Howard! Come ON!! Suggest you go and watch the Tomas interview and start to see that our players are HUMAN.
You are wrong anyway, as everyone knows, Cesc was simply worn out.

  88. Am obviously getting soft in my dotage, as rather liked John Barnes too…

  89. There’s nothing wrong with John Barnes.

  90. Any day now, Howard is going to reveal himself to be Blog Face, and claim that we’ve all been had.

  91. Who can forget The Anfield Rap?

  92. For many Liverpool supporters, of course, the word rap has rather different connotations.

  93. Ponyboy, I caught the first line of Howard’s ramblings then moved on. Cesc himself recognises that he was off form at the start of the season. He is man enough to take responsibility for his own form not try to blame someone else.

  94. Well, as a convicted felon, PZ…. but actually i can’t forget the Anfield Rap, as i can’t remember it..
Was that the “We’re going to Wembley”-type embarrassment ?

  95. Passenal..hehe..I usually do too… the other thing is, it feels like history now anyway, and pointless.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t go and watch “The Damned United” ! :-)

  96. The Anfield Rap:

  97. PZ…Oh Lord! That is the stuff of nightmares!

  98. “Let’s just hope he doesn’t go and watch “The Damned United” ! :-)

Watch it? Are you sure he didn’t write it?

  99. Haha…nice! Grinning out loud, Psn!

( Would like to see it tho’ – saw an interview with one of that lot.. apart from Bremner, can’t remember all the thug’s names – and he was a-moaning away about how these days players actually dive…in his day (sic) “We were brutal, but atleast we were honest”.

A few Taylors might say much the same..

    Hiya G4E !

  100. God, I hated Leeds back then – don’t remind me!

  101. It’s back to our old friend Karma, Passenal…

Last little rant about mindlessness: Don’t know if you’ve seen the ad. where TH14 kicks a ball at a car, and it explodes when, naturally, he hits it.

With no irony at all, some deep thinker comments: “I bet he didn’t really blow up the car, and they used explosives”.
Makes one love ACLF – if that’s the thinking ‘out there’ it’s scary.

  102. “With no irony at all, some deep thinker comments: “I bet he didn’t really blow up the car, and they used explosives”.

Im telling you guys. Stick to this blog. No need to move around to other sites. Its dangerous out there. We’ve lost a few bloggers already this season. And the ones that return, well, speak out of their 21 Arses!!

  103. Quote from Arsene Wenger’s interview on Arsenal.com.

“I prefer to be accused of being cautious, than to be accused of running the club into bankruptcy”

And that’s why will love you Arsene Wenger, you showed us that you really love the club that WE so dearly love. Any other manager would care more about himself and ask for money the club may not have, just to achieve his own success and glory.

But not you Mr. Wenger, you leave that to Sir Red Faced and the like. Yes, people will remember Sir. Alex Crap-head for all his glory but he will leave one day and people will remember him, but will they remember all the debt he accumulated if the club fails?

It so easy for me to get what I want right now with a credit card, but what will I do when I don’t have the money to pay it back?

We could have spent over our heads to win a title or two sooner, but we can also lose our club.

We love you Arsene Wenger, I know I do.

  104. Forgot to say…

    F*ck Off Howard @ 9:25pm.

  105. G4E

You can say what you like but the truth is; Denilson does not measure up to Arsenal standards. It’s the more reason why our midfield is average.

His passing range is poor. 90% sideways and back passes. Compare that to Diaby’s.

He has no pace to track back. Compare that to Diaby’s.

He lacks physical presence. Compare that to Diaby’s.

He has no skills to free himself in tight situations. Compare that to Diaby’s.

He can’t shoot. Compare to Diaby’s.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he’s neither a DM nor an attacking midfielder. So who’s Denilson?

He’s the type of player who should be on the bench and come in when someone is injured. He’s no ‘exceptional talent’

He’s not the right partner for Cesc.

Playing Denilson with Diaby on the bench is ridiculous.
