Newcastle Vanquished With Some Style

Newcastle United 1 – 3 Arsenal

0 – 1 Bendtner (57)
1 – 1 Martins (58)
1 – 2 Diaby (64)
1 – 3 Nasri (67)

An amazing burst of positive thinking has engulfed the world of Arsenal following the weekend’s matches. Whilst Liverpool’s drubbing of Aston Villa extinguishes the faint hope of second place, the defeats of the two teams directly above and below Arsenal consolidate the long road into the top four and perhaps even the top three.

The victory at St James Park was achieved through a mixture of determination and some scintillating football. Chief protaganists were Diaby and van Persie. The former had another immense performance away from The Emirates, providing a directness in the centre that even Arsene likened to Vieira-esque after the match, a comparison that he had previously been at pains to avoid making this season. Diaby dominated the centre of Newcastle’s midfield, Butt and Nolan were chasing shadows for most of the afternoon.

van Persie meanwhile was at creative best, his finishing might not have been up to his high standards but that was largely due to Harper and Taylor performing heroics. He was the chief provider with two assists, as the statto’s like to note. Commendable also was Bendtner’s performance, rewarded with a well-deserved goal. Unable to hit a barn door since the visit to The Hawthorns, I did wonder that had Walcott been fit, I doubt Nik would have started. As it was he rose well to meet Arshavin’s flighted freekick to break the deadlock. Prior to that he had set van Persie twice for sights on goal.

A curious refereeing performance though. If Almunia conceded a penalty following his flap at the ball, Sagna equally conceded one when he bundled over Duff earlier on. Whatever the rationale, it did not matter as Martins proved that having a crap penalty technique is not sole preserve of the English national team, Almunia moving smartly to save a ball placed too close to his body and underhit. Can’t think of any more criticism of the penalty.

Where fans get overly annoyed is the inability of referees to produce consistency from game to game. The only defence that can be offered for Taylor’s forearm smash on Arshavin was that neither Referee or Assistant saw it, in which case it is incumbent upon the Football Association to act for the red card should have been shown to the Newcastle defender. It was a pity in some respects that he should mar his performance with thuggery because up until that point, he had been the major barrier to Arsenal taking the lead. Reverting to the stereotypical thuggish acts when he had proved that it was possible for a typically English centre half to play without consistently resorting to foul play. May be Taylor could teach John Terry a few lessons on that front.

The second goal was the epitomy of everything good in Diaby’s game. Picking the ball up in the centre circle he played it off to van Persie whose touch was perfect as the Frenchman strode into the path of the return pass to drive home from the edge of the area, ten seconds from inception to completion and proof perhaps of how good a fit Diaby could be.

Completing the win was Nasri’s drive inside Harper from another van Persie lay-off. The woodwork and Harper denied the scoreline from being more emphatic but nonetheless deserved. The only downside was the nature of the Newcastle goal. It was slovenly defending all around, something like fifteen seconds after the restart following Bendtner’s opener. Gallas is being criticised for failing to clear properly but credit should be given to Martins for the constant pressure he put Gallas under and the controlled finish he put in.

But I’m not dwelling on the negative, for some have had a Damascene moment and are believing that all is not as bad they feared and harped on about since day one of this season. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Well, I for one am holding my breath on the FA taking action.

  2. Phew, thank goodness consolslel was on hand to slap my back. I was turning blue!

  3. Form is temporary and Class in Permanent… Arsenal has the class….

  4. Most of the talk on the blogs during the game was that Diaby was pretty diabolical up to his goal. As I couldn’t manage to get a working stream until about 30 seconds before he scored, I can’t verify that.

  5. Always the best anlyses by all standards, keep it up Yogi.

Why no FA inquest after the Taylor forearm smash. Taylor has a good look over to see where Arshavin is and the smashes him in the face. Its as clear a violent conduct offence as you will ever see.

Maybe the FA are too busy reviewing non-events like Cesc against Hull.

I thought Halsey was rubbish on Saturday. The penalty was soft and why no punishment on Ryan Taylor for 2 rugby-tackles on Clichy?

Halsey also missed Taylor’s attack on Arshavin. Had he see it he would probably given a yellow card and the FA would then not have been able to review it. Even though the ref missed it, still nothing is being done.

  7. Yeah, but no harm done..Arsha is not a ‘soft boy’; just minutes later he was dribbling away and just a few inches lower and goal of the month time.
Taylor will not be forgotten.. well, actually he probably will, because they’re going DOON.

  8. Only one error: it was Nasri not Sagna who bundled over Duff. Other than that a very good piece.

Re: Diaby, I don’t think he would have score had Taylor been on the pitch. Despite his thuggery upon Arshavin & Clichy, he was an absolute rock for Newcastle and he would have probably occupied the space that Diaby ran into.

  9. While Diaby’s defense-splitting goal was Hollywood stuff, let’s remember that Bassong had already gone off injured, and that the other CB, the ‘heroic’ Taylor, was off the field at the time.
Diaby waltzed through the middle because there WAS no middle — 10 men with only one subbed CB.
We’ve had a wonderful run lately, and Arshavin has changed everything for us, but we have yet to face anyone of means, and even those teams have been limping on and off the field. Easy to make a case that we should have done better in every game.

Re: Taylor’s forearm. Unwittingly, this incident actually has proved exactly what a number of imbecile columnists had been saying in print: in the BPL, spitting (even at the ground), IS really worse than hitting someone in the face, full force with explicit intent.
Not sure how AA managed to not get his cheek bone crushed, but you have to wonder how long he will want to take this. As I said last year, I think that endless kicking finally got to Hleb. The look on his face that last half dozen games showed he more and more he thought it just wasn’t worth it.
AA is clearly made of sterner stuff, but it will be a test for him.

  10. Diaby amazes me sometimes; he was really terrible in the 1st half. he kept losing the ball, insisting on dribbling at every touch. Whatever Wenger told him must have been harsh but what a performance in the 2nd half, once he started to give the ball early, the game really open up. If only he can learn to play like this all the time, he may be CESC permanent partner. COME ON DIABY! COME ON ARSENAL….Lets get finish 3rd place and win those 2 trophies!

  11. Some very short memories on here with regard to foul play. I was at Highbury for the league cup tie between arsenal and NUFC in the nineties when Ginola and the rest of the Mags were kicked all over the park by Winterburn & Dixon in one of the dirtiest displays of foul play I have ever seen.

  12. Good point hkm –
    – hearing him cry out in agony was horrible. Nothing in any media that i’ve seen to suggest the opposite.. but had Taylor gobbed at Arsha, one doubts if it would have merited headlines.. it would have been a ‘mistake’..
    – hopefully he’ll get some protection in future. It’s up to our big boys to ‘have a word’, PV style.
Re: Diaby’s goal – Karma. Sounds rather like an MOTD comment there..

  13. hkm,
“We’ve had a wonderful run lately, and Arshavin has changed everything for us, but we have yet to face anyone of means, and even those teams have been limping on and off the field.”

Don’t forget that we’ve had no problems beating teams above us. It is against teams like newcastle that we needed to perform.

  14. Not Karma..Jerome K. Jerome

  15. Alex Ice Cream

    biff,

That was in 1996 – 13 years ago – so memories are not that short!

If my memory serves me correctly Arsenal won 2-0 with 2 Ian Wright goals.

Some of the Newcastle lads would have given some back – David Batty? Ginola was a bit of a diver also

What about Shearer over the years? Neil Lennon anyone?

Anyway all of this is irrelevant. Taylor smashed Arshavin in the face and should be banned.

  16. “The victory at St James Park was achieved through a mixture of determination and some scintillating football.”

So nothing to do with us losing a two most effective defenders defenders then, in Bassong and Taylor ?

Arsenal ARE a great side, but please, let’s not forget that in the first half before Bassong went off, we matched you, and in your managers words could’ve gone in at the break a goal ahead of Arsenal.

  17. So hkm, whatever we achieve it’s always down to the weakness of the opposition? Who’s to say whether Taylor being on the pitch would have stopped Diaby? If one of our CB’s goes off someone steps back into their place and we re-shuffle until the player returns or a sub comes on, if Newcastle failed to do that, that’s their look out. It was the least we deserved as there should have been a red and at least one yellow for dangerous play. Karma gave us the advantage the referee failed to, and we took it.

  18. Thanks for that unbiased open-minded opinion.

Yes, I’m so you would have been equally effective with Gallas and Toure getting injured and leaving the game.

  19. Dax –
It’s a fair point, but talking to Arsenal fans about injuries is a bit rich. Just glad Barton wasn’t on the pitch, frankly, as he is a truly ugly piece of sh1te.

  20. And atleast you can come on here and make your points and not get abuse –
    – personally, used to quite like Newcastle; rather than moan about a couple of defenders, what about Owen not playing until it was all over ?
And how about the 3 or 4 goals we could easily have had near the end, when you lot were shattered ?

  21. “Yes, I’m so you would have been equally effective with Gallas and Toure getting injured and leaving the game.”

Looking where the second half was actually won, that’s quite probable. Newcastle tired and, as AW predicted, we dominated the midfield battle in the second 45. Owen had, what, three touches? The service lines were getting choked.

It was an even contest until half time but the match played out like a classic rope-a-dope: Lots of early exertion from Newcastle before tailing off. And who can say whether Steve Taylor’s injury wasn’t aggravated by one of those last-ditch efforts. He was a victim of the building pressure.

  22. Perhaps.

  23. @hkm
“Easy to make a case that we should have done better in every game.”

Easy for you, clearly. How much better? Winning 5-0? 10-0? Winning 18-0 with nine men and Almunia’s dog in goal? That sort of result belongs in comic books. As has been pointed out, losing games which we should have won has been our problem, so winning handsomely against Newcastle, Blackburn, Hull etc is a very positive sign. Perhaps now you will forgive the rest of us for feeling good when our team wins.

    @Dax
So you’re unbiased, are you? Hmm…
You played a good match on Saturday, especially in the first half. But we were the better team.
Don’t talk to us about injuries – we can see you and then raise you.
If Gallas and/or Toure had been injured, Arsene would have replaced them with Djourou and/or Song – both very capable CBs individually, and a very strong pairing.

  24. William McDonald

Halsey has to be sent to officiate at the l 2 level. He did not punish Taylor whose elbow deserved a red card.I believed Clichy was fouled twice and the offender not booked at all .
Such incompetent refereeing cannot be tolerated. Over to the FA old guys.

  25. Sorry, Passenal, but that truly is a lame argument.
Wake me when we get to the part about how many wingers can dribble on the head of a pin.
In the meantime Predetermination says that I will go eat my supper.

  26. if gallas had got injured and gone off, newcastle might not have even equalised.

  27. What exactly is your point hkm? If you post an opinion, don’t be surprised when someone comments on it. And you can stick your sarcasm where the sun don’t shine.

  28. hkm – wtf ??? Karma and predetermination are not the same thing at all. Do your homework.
Arsha and RvP, Kolo (in the mood for dancing!)..that’s just three.. then again, you want to debate the size of the pin..
Am beginning to dribble now. Nurse!!!

  29. Fungunner, sorry to ruin your fun.
    But here’s a thought:
    Liverpool beat Villa 5-0.
    We want to beat Liverpool.
There is no direct correlation between those 2 events at all, but there is cause to keep in perspective where we are so far on the Relative Scoring Scale (RSS).
Hopefully without upsetting Karma, of course.

  30. NURSE!!! There is a madman running around the corridors, spouting gibberish..

  31. @hkm
You can’t ruin my fun, so no need to apologise.

    “Liverpool beat Villa 5-0.
    We want to beat Liverpool.
There is no direct correlation between those 2 events at all…”

    Exactly.
So what is your point? How does Liverpool beating Aston Villa stop *us* beating Liverpool? They couldn’t beat us when we went down to 10 men and lost Fabregas to injury in the same game.

“but there is cause to keep in perspective where we are so far on the Relative Scoring Scale (RSS).”

However great Liverpool’s superiority in GD or GS, it will only count as the one point. We know we have to win all or games anyway, so whether Liverpool won 5-0 or 1-0, that has not changed.
However great the superiority of their GD at the end of the season, it is still worth the one point. We still have to win all our games.

  32. Ponyboy. I thought that it was so obvious that it would be taken as a joke. That weird thing about the needle was like that, too.

But I did like the NURSE bit. Nice one.

Passenal. I don’t have the slightest problem with somebody questioning my argument. Really just thought that the Karma thing was so lame that you couldn’t be serious. If we intend to end high in the table we have to be good enough that luck is a marginal player.
The rest was just screwing around. If it came across too heavy and pissed you off, sorry. Wasn’t my intention at all.

Ditto for you, too, Fungunner. That RSS thing. That was supposed to be a joke, too. Sorry if it wound you up.

Anyway, I’m going to go look for that nurse (she’s never there when you need her). You people are all just too freeking sane.

  33. Hello ACLFers,

Question: Does anyone know examples in football of players who played many games early on in their careers, then suffered burnout and otherwise had shortlived careers.

  34. Hey PB: the needle and the damage done!

  35. Relevant fact: There were two Taylor’s on the field. From an outrage standpoint, it simplifies things nicely, as there was a centreback who played very well and got injured, and fullback who assaulted both Arshavin and Clichy and Clichy, and is Allardyce’s bastard child.

  36. Not sure why the apostrophe is in there.

  37. Halsey did see the Taylor incident, that’s why he gave a free kick. That’s also why the FA can’t investigate it thanks to their absurd regulations. Rubbish all round really…

  38. @Ole Gunner

    Michael Owen?

  39. …who the f*ck is this hkm tosser?…

  40. …I think that the ‘good taylor bad taylor’ thing is oversimplifying, Nolaboyd…..good taylor committed a worse foul than bad taylor..

  41. …it is probably the case that all taylors are capable of good and bad acts…

  42. nolaboyd, the centre-back (Steven Taylor) was the one who forearm-smashed Arsh in the face.

  43. Fun Gunner,

Is Owen really a good example? Even as a kid he suffered the same number of injuries….

He seems to have been limited more by injury than burnout per se…

    Am I wrong?

  44. We’re going all the way ‘cos we’ll beat MANU, CHAVSKI and POOL along the way; winning the title by a single point.

    It’s going to happen.

  45. Is the one Toon fan commenting on every Arsenal fansite or is it me….he does’nt even change his argument ‘we matched you and you only won because our CBs were injured’

However theres no mention of the fact that Bassong(who wants to come to the Arse) was replaced and Taylor the thug got injured because he was continually having to put in block stops because we were DOMINATE!! world-class wally

  46. …I myself know at least one taylor who was almost perfect, an angel…..butcould be a right old rat-bag…..a scurvy knave…you just can’t tell which taylor is going to turn up…thats the thing about taylors…

  47. …I wouldn’t like to see a taylor playing for Arsenal….no way…too risky…

  48. Gianluigi Lentini?

  49. @Ole Gunner,

“Is Owen really a good example? Even as a kid he suffered the same number of injuries….”

Probably not. I was reaching… Are you writing a book, Ole Gunner?

  50. Howard @ 1.18 ??!!

mate, you don’t just take the biscuit, you take the whole biscuit tin – custard creams, bournvilles, digestives, jammy dodgers and all.

If you start getting all bullish on us, I’m getting worried. The season could well be about to crumble around us ….

  51. Too right Matty, isn’t this the same team full of average foreigners that someone was moaning about all season?

  52. “average foreigners”?

    Weren’t they “foreign craps”?

  53. Fun Gunner,

    I am just giving myself a reality-check.

I was talking to a colleague about the merits of youth in football. My main contention is that a 21 year old Fabregas who has played something like 250 top flight games for club and country, more than many 25 year olds, is superior to a 25 year old with the same experience.

We all know that youthful bodies recover better, and handle strain better.

I think football clubs that emphasise youth have an advantage that shows up in their being fitter.

I also think it’s a superior approach, because you can have a precociously talented and experienced kid but you cant have a 30 year old with the kid’s physical potential.

My colleague then said that players like Fabregas tend to get burnt out and have shortlived careers. And I said, that’s not true because there are actually very few cases of burnt out footballers.

There are examples of players who were exposed too quickly and that hampered their physical development. But not those who suffered burnout from playing a lot of games early on.

Players like Giggs, Raul, Maldini, Seedorf, played lots of top flight games in long long careers.

There are multiplefold more players who started early in the topflight and had long careers, than players who actually suffered a burnout.

  54. …for the campanologists amongst Arsenal supporters it might be good to have a team with nine taylors in…but the rest of us…naaaah…not interested….

  55. A bit of perspective on statistics and/or on Arshavin. I think we all agree that Arshavin looked one of the best players on the pitch against Newcastle, but his passing was actually woeful both in quantity and quality, according to the Guardian’s statistics. He attempted just 16 passes, suggesting he was right on the periphery of the action, and of those, 5 were misplaced. Compare that accuracy (only 11/16) to that of Denilson (57/59) and even Bendtner (21/24).

Now, before I am leapt on, I am not suggesting Arshavin played badly. I recognise that his role isn’t to make the short simple passes – he likes to play the killer balls. I am just urging a bit of perspective on his assimilation into the team given his statistically peripheral role. A lot of what he did against Newcastle was individualistic – was that a desire to prove himself, or possibly frustration that his team-mates aren’t as good as him?

It also shows that statistics don’t mean much.

    Food for thought.

  56. Ole Gunner – You missed out Bergkamp from your list of exceptional players who had long careers!

  57. There was a foul on Arshavin early in the game. The Newcastle player was late and then kicked through Arshavin (One of those stalwarts of English football, let him know your there type tackles). I can’t remember which player it was though. Does anyone know?

  58. Re: Bendtner. Is it me or does he seem to do better with more difficult chances and miss the easier ones?

  59. hkm, so?

pool lost to boro 2-0 so? should we be afraid to play boro too… who in their i=wildest dreams would have predicted pool bating man u 4-1… did anyone predict some of those our dire 0-0 draws?

that’s part of the fun of footy… the next match is unpredictable., you can only beat what is in front of you.

As bad as we were in the first half of the season, we drew with pool, so am not afraid to face them now cos we have improved too

  60. Villa is gone. Done and dusted. No more burning bridges for me.
    Unto 3rd place my boys.
We are getting better and stronger than all the rest. Our youth have been tried and tested. Denilson, Diaby, Song, Eboue and Bendtner are flying. Like tempered steel, moulded and hardened by combat and immune to the doom-mongers and purveyors of negativity. Ade and Cesc just around the corner and they my friends will have a hard time earning their places in the starting XI. Speaking of healthy competition.
Yes siree, it is good to be a Gooner.

  61. @ crafty bison –
I think it shows Arshavin’s a fantastically gifted player who is still settling in, basically.

Statistics are measurements. You can’t “measure” brilliance, but that doesn’t mean pass completion or ground covered statistics are meaningless or useless. They can tell you all sorts of things if you know how to use them and know their limitations.

    ****
    Ole Gunner
I tend to agree. The mental side of it is important, as well. If you can harness the natural ebullience and confidence of youth to the resilience that comes from experience, you are onto a winner. Plus you usually have a technically superior player because they started younger.

Physical burnout *can* be a danger if the very young athlete (kid?) is not protected from excessive training before his/her body is mature. But if you avoid that pitfall, then the old head on young shoulders is the best combination. Good decision-making allied to the physical capacity to execute correctly.

  62. crafty bison, I won’t leap on you because you have a point. Arshavin is still adapting to Arsenal’s short passing game, but I don’t actually think he is ‘better’ than those around him. He is more experienced so he makes quicker decisions and his team mates are not always up with him because they are still learning and adjusting to his game. what he does have is that when he gets the ball (apart from his corner kicks!) he usually gives the key pass that leads to a goal or goal scoring opportunity.

  63. And another thing – because the young player learns and adapts more quickly, he will get even more benefit from the experience he is exposed to.

  64. Not all, FG. Although I take your point generally. Reyes looked like he was really going to be special until he was kicked out of his stride by, most disgracefully, manu, amongst others.

He never learnt because his spirit got broken. His experience of the Premiership did not enhance his career. An early example of what we have come to expect of the behaviour of Prem. Clubs today.

How is he doing these days?

  65. @ crafty bison

I’ve just remembered – Arshavin was interviewed for ATVO. The interviewer remarked on how well he was doing, but AA said he didn’t FEEL he was playing well. He thought he wasn’t up to speed and that he was still getting used to his teammates.

And he’s STILL managed to provide quite a few assists, so just think what it’ll be like when he is on the same wavelength as his teammates! :)

  66. crafty bison,

Watching the game on Saturday, I got the exact impression the stats confirm; That he was peripheral in the game.

You can have key contributions while playing badly. I still think Van Persie is off form despite his two assists.

  67. @consolsbob –

I think that was just Reyes – his mentality, not his age. Compare and contrast with Samir Nasri’s reaction to Barton’s attempt at intimidation. Or Theo coming back stronger after being ridiculed by SG when he was in the England squad as a 17-year-old. Arguably, an older player might not have recovered at all. Or compare Fabregas and Hleb.
But yes, I too take your point that a young player * can * be damaged by a very negative experience early in their career. That’s why they have to be mentally strong and managed carefully by the coach.

  68. California Gooner

I think a little perspective is due on Taylor’s forearm to Arshivin’s face. It was a red card in my book or at least a card! but there was never much risk of shattering his cheek bone. More like a stinger. Neither player had their feet planted and Taylor was running away, not towards Arshivin… so there couldn’t have been too much force in it. Of course man players would have rolled on the turf for a good three minutes after that. I hate to imagine a blow like that to Dani Avles or Christiano Ronaldo. They could have died!

On Arshivin’s stats: you can see with your eyes what a difference he makes on the field. So, what good are the stats? For me they are like a different lens on the game. Not the truth, but some information we can use and evaluate along with what our gut tells us. Sometimes they help reveal bias in our own perception — i.e. Denilson. Other times they should just be ignored. This is one of those times. The problem with the stats we have is that they don’t really say much about whether a player makes a difference. Meters run? pointless if they are not run smartly. Passing accuracy? Important but it only measures quantity, not quality. But I think I’m preaching to the choir here.

  69. ….that is an extraordinary assertion, Ole Gunner….RvP did not play badly on Saturday…to many he was MotM….

  70. Arshavin passes the ball thinking that players will be in a certain space, his passing is not bad as the stat may seem. It will take both him getting used the timing of the team and also the other players getting to understand that he will find them. His passing is off the charts!

  71. Spot on, Paul N, But I remember that was exactly the kind of Denilson’s passes early on that got misplaced because he was expecting his teammates to be in certain positions. He is still being crucified for that even when he has adapted his passing and has a healthy accuracy level.

  72. “ONE DAY REMAINING!!!!:

  75. …or him…

  76. But you can always find a sexist

  77. thats the spirit, team spirit…..

  78. Well, CG, as long as I’m here…

I don’t have a recording to go back to, but at the time I felt that the slo-mo clearly showed Taylor slow, set himself, relax and then throw that forearm fast and hard. It was the focus and his hard exhale that looked serious business to me.
Even without the weight difference and the clean shot his height gave him, in my experience that’s an easy bone break.

    Maybe someone has a recording.

  79. Paulie Walnuts

Reyes is a classic example of a talented young player not (yet) fulfilling his potential. I can`t put my finger on what went wrong for him with us as he seemed to have so much going for him.

Arshavin is different. He`s done the hard work & playing for us is the cherry on his cake. I`m not surprised he`s started so well as he`s the finished article but next season he could be one of the biggest stars in the EPL. Just not the tallest.

  80. ….poor Jose Antonio missed his mum….

  81. Alex Ice Cream

    Passenal,

I have to disagree. I do think that Arshavin is better than those around him as you would expect from someone who has more experience at the top level. He is Russia’s playmaker after all.

Isn’t making quicker decisions part of being a better player?

  82. @ Alex Ice Cream,

And he hasn’t been hounded by the boo-boys the way everyone arround him has, even before the season started!

  83. Jose did Frank, and I agree, FG, that he certainly contributed to his own problems. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, to say the least.

I can’t see any of our current young men being ground down mentally like he was. They are a strong bunch and that strength will grow.

What happenned to Reyes in that he was targetted by manu in particular for a good kicking was a disgrace to football.

There is no comparison to AA who looks a particularly tough SoB and is far more mature and intelligent. I love the way he tackles back as well.

OG, I just watched the match again and thought Robin was superb. What are you seeing?

  84. California Gooner,

I keep saying that many confuse performance with ability. Arshavin has outstanding ability and thus makes a difference. But it doesnt mean he’s playing well. I’ve seen top class players have a shocker and then score a sublime goal.

You can’t dismiss the stats because he scored a sublime goal. The goal, afterall is just a stat too. The sublime goal is just a stat.

But since we’re not always perfectly objective stats give us an extra indication

  85. California Gooner

I think that once players realize that Arshivin will pick the pass out, make them look good, and put them in a beautiful position to score or they will become more willing to make runs for him. Really great passing definitely requires confidence on both ends…

And I agree with Alex IC that Arshivin is better than those around him (his passing and shooting exceptional, his ability to beat several players off the dribble rather unique for us now that Hleb is gone). He is the kind of super-class signing that Wenger is always talking about. However, here’s the thing: he will make those around him much better too. Actually, he already has.

  86. California Gooner , are you kidding a forearm to the head and a deliberate one he took time to look and then deliver. AA was very lucky not to have a jaw being broken. Taylor’s act was a case of sheer thuggery nothing else. I can accept a hard tackle but not that. It was and still should be a red card more so not just three games banned but six. There was no intention of playing football it was an out and out attempt to hurt another player. Barton would have been proud of that.

  87. RVP was great, Newcastles Goalie made some good saves on him and kept the scoreline respectable, thats all.

  88. Yeh, I agree Arshavin is better than the majority of the players in the PL fullstop. Its no shame for a player like Arshavin than you though.

Imagine him as an Arsenal player for a good 4-5 years, we could be talking about one of the Arsenal greats.

  89. Its no shame for a player like Arshavin “to be better” than you though.

  90. California Gooner

Oldtimer, I guess I saw it differently. But I would gladly change my opinion if I had a second look an saw it differently. I saw it as a definite red card. No doubt. But not as a jaw-breaker.

  91. There is no point to your post G4E. Stop wasting our time.

  92. California Gooner

Actually, I just found a video and freeze framed it. It is nasty. But he is not even square up, so there isn’t going to be that much power in the blow, I think. But it is not clear cut, so I guess it is one of those things people can disagree about even after seeing it again.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVn_ObfvkXw

  93. ….AA is a super player….but so are the players around him…he a great addition to an exceptional squad which has overcome real adversity and is beginning to shine very brightly…..as evidenced by being unbeaten since Cesc was injured….super players like to play with super players…that is why he has fitted in well at Arsenal…….works both ways…

  94. California Gooner , may I suggest if you can have another look, Taylor looked and made a deliberate attempt to maim AA. It was designed to remove AA from the filed. Actions like similar to this need to be removed once and for all from the game. If nothing is done then someone will be seriously injured. When someone gets hurt through a mistimed tackle, its just part and parcel of the game. But that tackle raised the hair on my neck because he looked and then changed his attempt to stop AA from passing to one of deliberately trying to hurt him; given his size compared to AA a very cowardly act. As has been suggested Terry or Barton would have been roud of that.

  95. proud

  96. Paulie Walnuts

    Agreed Frank,

If Arshavin was playing for Thugburn or Bolton for example he`d look awful but we`ll get the best out of him.

Good point on the run since Cesc`s injury too.

Just one point on the Taylor elbow – had it been say Gallas on Owen it would have been replayed over & over again on every channel possible.

  97. California Gooner , concur but as I said it was the intent to seriously hurt.

  98. Paulie, Arshavin would not look awful, if he was playing with a team made up of people who post on this blog.

Cream always rises to the top.

  99. That 6 second RT clip on Taylor does not give the full picture. You have to see the slow motion version. There is so much more in it.

  100. AIC, what was Arshavin doing at 21? I will not disagree that he is more experienced so able to do more with his talent at this moment in time. We have some exceptional talents who in time will only get better as we’ve already seen even during the course of this season.

  101. Are we really unbeaten since Cesc got injured? That is a staggeringly brilliant statistic.

  102. Agree Passenal, Arshavin is more the finished article.

  103. ..yep in the league it is, London….22nd Nov 2008 was the last time we got beat in the league…

….since then we have only been beaten by Burnley in the Carling Cup and Porto in the ECL Group Stages….oh and the second leg against Roma (but we won that really didn’t we)…

  104. It’s slightly hysterical to talk about bones being shattered. The elbow in the face deserved a red card, but it didn’t badly hurt Arshavin. If it had, Arshavin would have gone and kicked the sh*t out of the c*nt.

  105. I read a truly incredible statistic today, the last time Rooney was sent off in the Premier league was 198 games ago.

Credit Ian Tevitt for that one.

Funny thing was, I thought he was a bit hard done by on this occasion. Mind you, I think he should be sent off in 50% of the games I see him play.

  106. …Cesc was injured just before Chrstmas 2008….and we haven’t lost since then except for Roma away which does not count…

  107. 50% seems low to me Mr. Bob, at least 70%.

  108. Maybe I’m feeling a bit mellow after the weekend Paul.

  109. I think so, the bliss at Arsenal will do that to you.

Wow, isnt it amazing how this thing has turned around! It was only a matter of time. Not only are we beating teams but we are “beating them up!”. We are winning in a convincing manner. That CL penalty shoot out has done more for the team that if we just won it in regular time!

Confidence is high but it is good to know that the team can deal with the pressure, even from their own “fans”, this is a recipe for greatness!!!

  110. Rooney was a stone wall sending off, Ronaldo should of gone too.

There cracking abit aren’t they, Ronaldo seemed like he’s started the first stage of engineering his ‘dream’ move

  111. CBob, how did you waste time on a blank post? Did it take you that long to read? :) Are you drinking aged Cider again?

  112. Paulie Walnuts

It seems as if Simpson`s early promise at WBA was short lived.

Unless we sell he won`t get a look in next season

  113. Agree with Passenal. 3.31pm. Oh and every other time, too..

  114. Walnuts..
It’s noy Simpson, or his Mohican – simply that he’s a cut (sic sic) above the average.
How can a kid learn Arsenal football at WBA ??
    Arsene will know, naturally…….. :-)

  115. noy/ not

  116. @ Paul N
For me, the crucial change between now and three weeks ago is that we are in control of our own destiny again.

  117. . (This one is for CBob)
    ===

Why do we have to classify our players into the poor & rich brackets? Arshavin is a good player….if he wasn’t, Wenger would not waste our money. But to say he’s better than the players around him? Do you guys mean in other teams or players in the Arsenal team? Why is he better than Clichy? They both play in different positions, but they are both equally good at what they do.

There is a difference level of experience that’s for sure but most of our players have similar basic characteristics because they are all picked to Wenger’s standards of a player…their differences are in their specific position requirements.
    ===

I noticed Diaby’s great performance in the second half, but it seems that yet again the “Quiet One” went unnoticed by many. I think Denilson cleaned up neatly behind Diaby, and becoming closer to a Gilberto….Quiet, Silent, Efficient, and Selfless midfield engine.

Most people want a huge scary midfielder, but they don’t realize that an elephant can get scared sh!t of a mice. It’s not how big you are, it’s how smart in getting the job done. People were saying we need a big strong defender, yet complained about Senderos being clumsy!

  118. Alex Ice Cream

    Passenal,

I imagine that Arshavin was playing football at 21.

The point I am making is that at this moment in time he is better than the other players. Whether they will be better when at the same age is anybody’s guess and also irrelevant.

  119. Was it Eduardo’s return which triggered this feel-good factor?

  120. It’s good that Arshavin is receiving praise; but when that praise carries an insuation that before his arrival we had no good players, it is actually a subtle (but not very subtle) form of denigration.

  121. very true….Poliziano

  122. Yes Pz, the same denigration that pundits made when they argued that by signing AA Wenger was admitting that his ‘experiment’ had failed.

There was no experiment of course, he was just building a team in a way that the pundits do not want to recognise.

AA is an excellent player though and he has made a difference. Why wouldn’t he? 25 excellent players are an improvement on 24. Another piece in the jigsaw.

As for you G4E. I always try to see the point of your posts even though their meaning is often unclear or even absent. As was indeed the case today. Although, now that you have mentioned it, it may very well be a good time for a glass of the golden brew. That was an excellent point.

  123. Alas I'm Crass

“The point I am making is that at this moment in time he is better than the other players. Whether they will be better when at the same age is anybody’s guess and also irrelevant.”

his experience is not relevant as better player than a younger inexperienced one?

  124. …I see we are back in the realms of utter nonsense again….why do you need to compare AA with other Arsenal players….many of them are at a similar level…and the others are not far away….he fits in with the team which says a lot about him AND the team….his experience means that he has been able to settle quicker…his teams mates have been able to help him assimilate and get used to the prem…….it is a team thing…football is a team game…constantly playing one off against the other is puerile….

  125. I’m just trying to find an excuse for you to have a sip of that tasty Cider man :)

I just thought I would change the way I put my point out there by making it “clear”….I geuss that confused people (Including me)….change is hard, I understand.

  126. I think that you have cleared that point up G4E. Thank you.

  127. I’ve just been watching the replay and wanted to comment on something I’ve noticed recently but more so today. Nasri’s defending has improved significantly since the start of the season. He has made really good progress all round in a relatively short space of time. For his first season in the PL and with Arsenal, he has been fantastic.

  128. “why do you need to compare AA with other Arsenal players….many of them are at a similar level…and the others are not far away….he fits in with the team which says a lot about him AND the team….”

I agree Frank. This is the point I was trying and failing to make.

  129. Nasri is class Passenal, it’s no surprise he’s tipped to be the next Zidan, although he has a long way to go.

I would say if he is the direct replacment of Hleb, we are so much better off if you compare Hleb’s first year to Nasri’s first year.

And how much did we pay for him 20 million?

  130. Im better then the guy who sits next to me at games you know!

  131. Yes, but is he younger Duke and how good will he be in five years with the experience of sitting next to you?

  132. I think Nasri was in the region of £14 million G4E.

  133. Better at what?

  134. Paulie Walnuts

Nasri`s first season reminds me a little of RP7 who also had to learn the more defensive aspects of the game.

What I like about Nasri is the way he`s embraced that & his unselfishness & awareness. He settled in immediately which for someone of his age (new county & all that) has been somewhat overlooked.

  135. @ Passenal

” Nasri’s defending has improved significantly since the start of the season. He has made really good progress all round in a relatively short space of time. For his first season in the PL and with Arsenal, he has been fantastic.”

Hear hear. To the extent that it’s hard to imagine us without him.

    ****
    @ anyone who is interested

Re the youth policy – the plan all along was to buy super class and experience to go alongside the young ‘uns – if such players were available. AA was available and AW nabbed him.

  136. Had to read a bedtime story to my chickens tonight, by the way FG. I hope that you are satisfied.

  137. @ consolsbob

“Had to read a bedtime story to my chickens tonight, by the way FG. I hope that you are satisfied.”

    lol
Good move. Lull them into a false sense of security…

  138. I agree FG, Arsene wasn’t to know that experienced players would fall prey to long term injury or the lure of the Barca bench!

  139. Arshavins a class above Nasri or Rocisky though aint he, he’s top drawer, am gutted you lot have him

  140. Any one watching the reserve game against the Chel$ks? Still 0-0 I think

  141. You are heartless and conniving FG.

  142. Come on CBob..she is just being realistic :) We all know what happens to chikens…It’s even unfair that Hector might be saved so he can have his way with the new generation of chickens…

  143. @ Consolsbob

“You are heartless and conniving FG.”
    I know – fabulous, isn’t it?

Seriously though, if things start looking bad for Arsenal, I’m sure we can count on you to do the right thing.
(Sinister music, evil half-smile playing about the lips…)

  144. Passenal,
” Nasri’s defending has improved significantly since the start of the season. He has made really good progress all round in a relatively short space of time. For his first season in the PL and with Arsenal, he has been fantastic.”

I amost wet myself on Saturday seeing how much he’s doing the defensive work now. It’s amazing because just a couple of weeks I thought he was still far off from being trusted to put in his share of defensive work.

  145. Alex Ice Cream

Nasri has done very well and will be better next season. He has shown that he can handle the pressure and has 7 goals. He has also played out of position on the left and still done well.

He dos look better in the middle though but we have so many players whose prference is to play there.

  146. All this chitchat of Pires and Nasri comparisons is making me really really look forward to seeing RP7 at The Emirates. A true Arsenal legend.

I actually think Nasri is ahead of Pires in terms of where they were at this stage in their Arsenal career. Pires took at least 6 months to show any signs of his class, I think the pace and physical aspect of the EPL really staggered him at first.

Saying that, if Nasri has half the career Pires had for us, then he will do brilliantly.
2001/2 – Pires – golden moments. What a player, a great at his peak.
That lob over Schmeichel v Villa, I am getting butterflies just picturing it.

  147. Nasri, will be frightening in years to come, its unbelievable how young and talented this Arsenal team is!

    NO FEAR!!!

  148. Andrie is the new Pires! Nasri is the new Lyungberg!! Song is the new Viera! Denilson is the new Petit!

  149. I know there is logically no connection…

But my personal fortunes have mirrored those of Arsenal’s over the last 5 years.

More specifically, I haven’t felt so happy for a long time but these last 3 weeks have been incredible and they will only get better now.

Implausible, I know but coincidence is a funny thing.

I just hope this coincidence continues.

These are the greatest times for me. May they be the greatest times for Arsenal. More plausible.

  150. Why is Nasri so cool and so good ?? He looks like he’s just stepped out of the school-gates.
    Life…oh..li-ife!!

  151. Paulie Walnuts

    Matty,

I couldn`t agree more. The media always seem to give more accolades to Henry , Bergkamp & Vieira but for me Pires was right up there alongside them. In 2001 / 2 he was incredible.

  152. Even the disbelievers are seeing the light :

in todays Daily Mail ….. no other than Jamie “Sit on the fence unless it’s about Frank Lampard and then I come in my pants” Redknapp writes – “There’s not much of a queue forming to join me on this one yet, but trust me ; Abou Diaby is going to be a top player. He has long legs, height, power and driving strength, injuries have delayed his impact, but watch him come good.”

  153. FG –
We talk glibly abut headless chickens.. but Consols and i both know how freaky they are!! Seen them jump (leap ? freak ?) way over my head…
Am glad i follow the Path of Peace these days, and kill nothing but humans.

  154. Nasri, Arshavin, Walcott, Diaby, Denilson, Fabregas, Van Persie and Eduardo.

    Need I say more?

  155. Matty:
ok, yep..but there’s always a ME in there.
“Trust me etc”. Piers ‘ego’ Morgan wrote a funny-ish piece about permatan, but had to preface it with how he’d met him..and such a megastar too. Even Simon Barnes, one of the lesser evils, has to let us know he’s on nodding terms with men in shorts. Pshaw!!!

  156. Paulie W, you’re talking to a bloke who named his only son after Robert Pires (the Robert bit, not the Pires bit !)….. he was just on fire that year.

That was also the year when I nearly got the crap beaten out of me in a pub for cheering for France when they played England. They had Pires, TH14 and Vieira playing for them, it was a no brainer. I was saved by a fellow Gooner.

Ponyboy ….. re 8.56….. he has a cool swagger about him, agreed – but i’m not having those highlights. 50k a week should get you a decent hairdresser shouldn’t it ?

  157. Does any one know the result of the Reserve game?

  158. 0 – 0 G4E

  159. Paulie Walnuts

Respect on the son naming Matty.

Jamie Redcr*p always states the obvious. I don`t really care what he `finks` but Diaby has certainly improved & like most of this team he`ll get even better.

  160. Thanks Passenal, I want to beat the chel$ks in every competition but I guess it wasn’t to be today….

  161. Diaby’s runs are scary…actually very scary…his strides are like 3 yards/second….and now he comes up with the ball in the majority of his tackles.

Now all he needs is a run without injury. I’m just not sure where would he play when Cesc is back? Unless it’s in a 5 man Midfield.

  162. I didn’t see much but apparently we played well first half and could have/should have scored a few. Second half Chelski played better, but given that we’ve lost our last 2 reserves matches, a draw is probably a good result.

  163. “Abou Diaby is going to be a top player. He has long legs, height, power and driving strength.”

I’m sure his conclusion is correct, but his reasons leave a lot to be desired.

  164. I was thinking the same thing too Poliziano. Didn’t Carlton Palmer have long legs?

  165. It might as well be a description of the Stoke team. I can’t wait to see who he buys in the summer.

  166. I presume Redknapp struggles to discern the merits of Modric.

  167. Actually Poli, Jamie was raving about Modric as well. Saying not only is he great on the ball, but that he works very hard too.
Not really a shameless plug for his dad, cos his dad didn’t buy Modric.

AW didn’t rate Modric enough to buy him a year before the Spuds did, for a third of the price too.
I’ll take AW’s judgement over a Redknapp, senior or junior, every day of the week.

  168. Diaby’s interview is on Arsenal.com

  169. Alex Ice Cream

    Poliziano,

Using Jameeee’s logic Arshavin, Cesc and Messi must be sh1t then.

  170. Alex Ice Cream

I do like Diaby though. He has pace, strength, dribbling ability and can shoot.

I am not sure he can play as Cesc’s partner though but I would like him to stay fit enough so that we could find out.

  171. I just watched Diaby’s ‘spotlight’ interview on ATV G4E – he comes across well

  172. He is Passenal, his English got a lot better since the last time I heard him talking :)

Most of his goals are memorable too, now that I saw the A. Villa goal he scored….it was an awesome goal.

  173. I was also interested in his comments about Kolo being a leader in the team – quite a few players have said that about him.

  174. Love it when Kolo decides to go on a run.. you think he’s going to mess it up..but no..
But has his Arse stopped growing ? It’s hard to tell ~
Kolo: “Does my bum look big in this ?”
    William: “Just a bit, Kolo”
    Robin (laughing): “It’s art, Kolo!”
    Arsene:” I couldn’t possibly comment!”

  175. I think Kolo can be a great leady, he just needs to grow into the role….But I guess it’s not going to be for long since Cesc is back, and Kolo will be the backup.

What I was really impressed with. is Wenger giving the armband to many players this season. They all have to feel the importance, they all have to share the responsibility. It’s makes you not only think of yourself but the rest of your team too.

  176. No Ponyboy, Arsene would say “I didn’t see it”!

G4E – I think the point is that the other players already think of Kolo as a leader as Diaby is not the first player I have heard say that about him.

  177. Perhaps you’ve hit on the reason Wenger never sees anything.

I’ve never really noticed that Toure has well-developed glutes.

  178. Passenal..heh.. true.. Last Post: Am noticing a (disturbing ?) resemblance between Manuel Almunia and a Die Hard1 Bruce Willis..

Just love the way AW brings players onwards and upwards.

Manuel is / very very soon will be, the best PL keeper. Love his hair too… it’s a shame the pressure has turned it white, but, hey…that’s life at the top.

  179. Last post for tonight from me too Ponyboy – he also sounded very bullish in the post Newcastle interview – this team means business!

  180. Bruce Willis? I’ve always thought he looks like Leon.

  181. BentleyThe FlyingSpur

    Yaaahhhooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

  182. ^ btfs, eff yooooo!!! !!!

  183. Last night’s reserves game was fairly dull, lots of fouls, no rhythm, etc. There were some good fleeting moments of football from both sides though. If Diaby is the new Vieira, then Jay Emmanuel Thomas just might be giving Diaby a good run for it too… Only 18 years old and already a giant in size, he stood out against a Chelsea side which included Mineiro, Stoch, Malouda and Di Santo. He seems to have this natural ability to conjure up something special out of nowhere. When other players look under pressure or out of ideas, Thomas is unaffected. Give him the ball and almost instantly Arsenal become resurgent. I really like that, and it shows why he is so respected by his team-mates in the youth team.

Right-back Eastmond also looks impressive, perhaps he’s a bit under-rated. Chelsea’s Di Santo was awful, he did absolutely nothing. Silvestre had a good game just simply keeping the back line calm and out of trouble – now let’s see if he can do that for the first team!

  184. The only problem with Diaby is waiting in the tunnel before the games, it gives him a bad back and affects his performance, poor lad

  185. …so whats with the cheap f*cking advertising….

  186. …well sorted, YW…
