AS Roma v Arsenal Preview

A couple of those in Rome this evening would not go amiss. In fact, I do not care which of the player’s anatomy the ball enters the Roma net via, so long as Arsenal progress. The media have been salivating over the two English teams passing into the ether of the quarter-final stages, Arsenal reduced to the status of ‘English team most likely to be knocked out‘, despite a double-digit unbeaten run and only four goals conceded in the fourteen games since Villa fought back from a two-goal deficit on Boxing Day.

For the first time in many months, Wenger has genuine tactical options within the squad following the return of Eduardo and Walcott. The recent minor injury to Kolo Toure has healed and I would expect him to return to the centre of the defence at the expense of Johan Djourou. The squad named yesterday offers the chance to attack with pace, even if Walcott does not start. To be honest,  I would rather see him introduced with half an hour to go to scare the living bejesus out of tiring Roman defenders.

It will most likely though be a counter-attacking five man midfield that starts. A magical attacking performance such as the one in Turkey earlier this season would be most welcome. Wenger commented:

It is a night for the team to stand up more than any individual. I believe in a shared leadership and we have many leaders. I believe more in that than in one leader sorting everything out. At the start of the season, the hangover from last season was still there but since November, things have changed. We can grind out results more and this is a good opportunity to show that. The team has grown together and gelled well in the last three months, under extreme pressure.

He has called this “a defining moment” for the squad. For me, the win over WBA was the moment that the season took on that quality. Progress tonight and a win on Saturday leaves the team in the Quarter-Finals of both knockout tournaments, coupled with fourth place in the Premier League, achieved with influential players still to return in the coming weeks. The pressure told last season, inexperience killing off a title challenge. To show the lessons have been learnt, well EnglandNewOrder can take up the reins:

Now is the time, Let everyone see
You never give up, Thats how it should be
Dont get caught, Make your own play
Express yourself, Dont give it away

The crucial area will be midfield. With Arshavin cup-tied, Eboue seems likely to revert to the right side. In the middle, I would personally go for Denilson and Diaby; Song has done little wrong but Wenger has said in the past that Diaby was his vision of a long-term replacement for Vieira. Having been withdrawn with half an hour to go on Sunday, it would be little surprise to see the Frenchman start ahead of Song.

I would expect the team to be:

Almunia; Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy; Eboue, Denilson, Diaby, Nasri; van Persie, Eduardo

With a bench of:

Fabianski, Djourou, Gibbs, Walcott, Song, Ramsey, Bendtner, Vela

A crucial match every time the team plays for the remainder of the season. Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Haha! You posted it! Excellent!

    -

This is going to be a long, long day!

I just can’t wait. I think we’re in a great position to go through; we have by far the better players and our confidence is growing by the game.

This is just massive. With Cesc and Ade coming back and with Theo and Dudu getting fully-fit, we’d be confident against whoever we meet in the next round.

  2. I’d like to see Theo on from the start – his mere presence would force Roma slightly deeper to avoid being caught by his pace.

That should give us greater control of the ball.

    Looking forward to tonight though!

  3. judith Le'Strange

I hope we are as successful as I hate to say it Chelsea and Liverpool, it just depends on what team turn up to play, whether it’s the I can hit the net oops it’s hit the side netting or oops it’s gone up to the gods. I just hope we attack and not just sit back and let them come to us, hoping that our one goal will be sufficient.

  4. What Yogi, no Walcott in the team? Have you made a mistake?

  5. surely Theo would make the bench?

  6. Frank's biggest fan

    Thank you, Yogi.

I’m having problem with the pic loading fully. Hope it works fine for others. :)

  7. Alex Ice Cream

The fact that we didn’t finish this game at home will provide a stern test for this team so it will be interesting to see how they respond. Many played in Milan but by no means everyone.

I think that we will go through and 1 goal ought to be enough but we have had enough heartbreak in Europe before so I am not going to be too presumptious.

Its a shame that Arshavin is cup-tied but at least Ade is still injured!

  8. You said you wanted Walcott to come on in the last 20 mins but you’ve not put him on the subs bench! Other than that great article and looking forward to tonights game. I think Bendtner will start tonight though instead of Eduardo as he probably doesnt want to give him 2 big games within 3 days of each other.

  9. Blogs…Ramsey instead of Wallcott?? I can see Bendy starting with Chips, Theo and Dudu coming off the bench for Bendy, Eboue and Diaby – all scoring one each!!

Def out for Roma: Perrotta, Tonetto, Cicinho, De Rossi and Panucci – Major Doubts: Pizarro and Aquailani – possible outs: Jaun, Doni and Totti. Still nervous but thats a real blow for AS.

If we do get through we will have to be careful of those phantom hand ball decisions that the Chavs and Scousers seemed to be blessed with from time to time!

Good luck all – cant wait!! Come on you Gunners!

    Ps. Stay safe away support.

  10. This is what it is all about, if you can’t get excited about these games, then you are not human!

And it is why we need to make sure we get that 4th spot!

Bendtner was rested on Sunday, so i would presume that was because he will start tonight.

    Eddie on the bench.

Theo on the bench also, we need to keep it tight for as much of the game as possible, and Eboue is more solid than Theo.

  11. It’s a nightmare…the selection is a nightmare. All my computations have Eboue in the starting line-up! Otherwise the squad is unbalanced.

    What do you people think?

  12. Alex Ice Cream

I would have thought that Eddie would start as a goal would normally be enough to see us through.

  13. I think the worst case scenario could be a 2-1 loss tonight which would still be enough to see us progress.
But the way defense has been playing its difficult to see them concede 2.
I do worry about Vudinic though because I’ve seen him play against United last year and was a hand full. I just hope Toure & Gallas can handle his aerial presence.
All in all we should be good enough to get a score draw.
Wenger is right though about the faith of this team because if we don’t go through its going to be a long Summer of rumours involving Cesc, V Persie and Adabayor

  14. Frank's biggest fan

Dudu could start. We need to play our best players. But Arsene should see them first hand, and pick his team. I think Theo and Bendtner could come from bench as supersub. Dudu might start alongside RVP. I expect the first-11 to be:
    ——–Almunia
    Sagna-Gallas-Toure-Clichy
    Eboue-Denilson-Diaby-Nasri
    —-RVP—–Eduardo—–

When we attack, we normally look like this:
    —–Almunia
    —Gallas-Toure
    Sagna-Denilson-Clichy
    –Eboue-Diaby–Nasri
    —-RVP
    ———Eduardo

  15. Sleepless night for me….

    But

    Knights, Tonight…..,

    WE DINE IN ROME!!

Last year, they said we would be wiped out at the fiery atmosphere of the San Siro..

    We said….BRING IT ON!

They also said we would be deep fried in the cauldron that is the Sukru Saracoglu…

we said…BRING IT ON, ALL OR NOTHING!

Now they are saying we will be crucified, nailed to the centurion chambers and later thrown to the gladiator peets to be mauled by the Lions..

We reply…BRING IT ON, UNRATED, UNADULTERATED, ALL OR NOTHING!!

This is our destiny of which we are in charge, of which we alone can fulfill. We shall move on without fear and with the force as our guiding light!

May the force be with you and see you in the Universe of Light

  16. peets=pits

  17. Alex Ice Cream

Liverpool’s success in the CL is due to luck, Benitez’s (negative) tactics but also becuase of Steven Gerrard who has shown his ability to dominate important games in this competition.

Cesc did it last year in Milan- with Hleb and Flam and v Juve in 06 and TH did it in some games but not as much in the KO stages. For all our brilliance we have lacked a Gerrard, a Del Piero, a Zidane to control and win games at this level consistently and this is one of the reasons why we have not done as well as we might have in this competition.

Cesc is by far out best bet but he is injured. Arshavin could maybe do this in the future or RvP perhaps.

  18. Yep Theo was meant to be on the bench – rushed it at the end as the VATman calleth.

    YW

  19. think bendtner will be starting as he was rested midweek.. lineup will be similar to the first leg.. with walcott and dudu comin on in the 2nd half..

  20. Ice expect Eboue to dominate this one….Now that he scored a goal, he will hopefully go for it fullthrottle and make some of us gulp for breathe

  21. Frank's biggest fan

It’s easy to say Gerrard is one of the main factor, when he so easily gets to convert those penalties in vital KO games. This is down to poor refereeing in favour of Liverpool in CL (nowadays they get that in PL also). Very fortunate.

  22. hoo hoo… looking forward to tonight… i can picture Theo starting and coming off later on if we get the away goal(s) in the bag… they’ve got to score and so attack us… what better to expose them on the counter than TH14′s pace? :) then off for Eboue to solidify it later on.

  23. Alex Ice Cream

    FBF,

What about the header in the final v Milan and subsequent performance , the screamer v Olympiacos in 05, the third goal yesterday?

I know that their penalties are a joke but take out the goals scored from the spot and the argument still holds true.

As much as we dislike their outrageous fortune and sh1t style of play, their record in Europe over the last 5 years is there for all to see. Gerrard has been crucial to this and we do not have a player that has done the same for us in that time.

  24. Alex Ice Cream

    Dan,

Have we re-signed Thierry Henry? How much did he cost?

  25. Frank's biggest fan

I think Wenger would opt to go with Eduardo than Bendtner. Eduardo can convert chances, and for KO ties, it is absolutely vital we got for players with clinical finishing. Eduardo or Vela should start alongside RVP. Dudu got more experience, and is a bit more deadly in the box. I’d still vouch for him.

  26. Yeah. That makes sense, Fbf. I can see Eduardo starting, scoring, and later on, making way for Theo or Nic.

  27. I know we are over recruiting youngsters now….We have enough to be getting on with, thanks. But a player we were (supposedly) linked to earlier in the season, Juve’s Giovinco seemed to lively-up themselves, when he came on against Chelsea.

  28. Frank's biggest fan

    AIC,

That’s just two occasions in my books that Gerrard had produced a good performance in KO, that really changed the game in their favour. The 3rd one last night is a consequence of first 2 bogus goals. They are just lucky, these scousers. Cesc came up with brilliant performances against Juventus, and Milan. And almost did in Liverpool game (First tie) if not for Bendy’s block, sadly. Not to mention the penalties given/not given in these ties. I’d say Liverpool got very lucky in KO ties in past 5 years. This year, it will run out for good.

  29. As much as you dislike Liverpool, i am not sure you can put a 5-0 aggregate victory all down to luck…

Why would AW rest Bendtner on Sunday if he was not going to start tonight?

  30. Yeah, that makes sense Matt! I can see Nic starting, scoring and then I don’t know what….

  31. I love not knowing, don’t you?!! I guess that’s why I only post on here intermittently.

  32. I put it down to Real being rubbish with a rubbish manager Matt.

  33. Frank's biggest fan

5-0 aggregate victory all down to luck…

Let’s take their away goal. A silly cynical foul by Heinze, and they got an unlikely goal because of poor marking.

the first goal was foul on Pepe, and the second wasn’t a penalty. Now 2-0 up, with Madrid chasing the game, it’s easy as F*** to add one or two, and make it look convincing. Yes, Liverpool looked far better than Madrid last night. But it’s just first two bogus goals killed the tie. I’d rather liked it if they had got the goals legitimately. But they don’t. Still claiming Rafa to be some sort of tactical magician.

  34. I agree with you QoS – they were pretty poor weren’t they!

I wasn’t saying that there wasn’t luck involved with them winning FBF, but apart from that, they were still much the better team.

Apart from the English teams, only Bayern or Barca look a real threat.

  35. Arsenal will have the stronger side on the pitch, no doubt about that, the only doubt is the mental strength of Wenger’s team. Will they fold easily when Roma threaten? Or will they run riot and score 4 goals like Liverpool did?

  36. OK ARSENAL, THIS IS OUR TIME

‘Tis exciting. I am in a state already.

Boon is right … this one is all about relaxed mental strength.

Wish the team well, each and every one!!

    We love ya Arsenal.

  37. An early goal for us and Roma will be the ones that collapse.

  38. Loving that eduardo clip! hope he starts tonight.

Looking forward to the match. I work in Manchester so having to put up with loads of Utd tw@ts telling me we’re going out.

Come on you gooners! (& Inter)

  39. Tonight,
    We crystallize our season
    Unbeatable in 15
    With confidence brimming
    It should be quite exciting
    Dining on the Romans
    Gunner be an execution!

I am so stoked for this one guys..
Can’t really worry ’bout how we line up:

    AW’s got OPTIONS…all sorted out..who scores?
    “EDS & Theo?”
    “Vela & Nic?”
    “Nasri & RvP?”
    “Song & EE??”

It doesn’t matter when CONFIDENCE lives STRONG in the veins of our GUNNERS!

These players have been WARRIORS all season, battling opponents, their fears, injuries, the press, supposed supporters & sky high expectations of playing for the best team & manager of the 21st century so far!

I believe this game marks the real transition point. The game where the polarity of our season changes for good

    I SUPPORT their cause 100%!
May the FORCE be with ARSENAL FC tonight
    Roma prepare to be devoured!!!!!!!!!!!

    RASERS for LIFE!!!!!

  40. “…and in 10 days , all the doubters will again become “believers “ and AW their God!”

  41. Come on you gooners! I too would love to see Eduardo in the starting 11 but I think it will be Bendtner simply because he was rested against Burnley. He’s asked for a starting role, is now scoring goals, it’s time to step it up for real. I fully expect Eboue to wreak havoc on Roma now that he’s gotten the goal he so richly deserved.

Even if Pepe was fouled for the first goal by Liverpool it was nothing more than he deserved. He is a thug, was chopping down Liverpool’s players at every opportunity and then whinging to the referee whenever he was told to knock it off. What a complete tool.

  42. Hello everyone. Think Bendy and Eboue to start, Eddy and Theo to be kept back in case we need them.
I share the common theme of the frustration of Liverpool’s never ending sequence of luck – especially in the CL.
And how poor were Madrid ?

Diarra seems to have fallen foul of the Galactico attitude, ”I’m too good to need to train”.

  43. however poor Madrid were shown to be that first 20 minutes last night was awesome by Liverpool…I have never seen them at that level before and their weekend game vs manu should be someting…

points for our game tonight…we must score so eduardo to start, walcott and nick in reserve…

we must maintain the pace we showed at the weekend…so diaby/song/eboue in some configuaration or the other essential…

with their injury problems we should kill’em…

  44. Unbelievable goal! how simple did Eduardo make that look? What a player!

    ARSENAL 3-1 Tonight!

    NO FEAR!

  45. We’re winning tonight and it’ll be all the way to the finals.

Liverpool’s luck in CL games don’t seem to abate. Season after season you find the officials in their pockets.

Let’s hope we run our luck this time round.

  46. It’s amazing to see just how quickly a few good results and performances get everybody salivating for the next game. I don’t think that it will be easy tonight but I’m confident that we will go through.

    Come on Arsenal!

  47. Howard – Dead right about Liverpool’s luck. I’m still fuming about the 3 incorrect penalty decisions they got in a week against us last season.

  48. I think is hard to judge Pool vs RM match well, cant imagine what it felt like to go down 2-0 to bogus refereeing. Seems like it would be quite difficult to have confidence knowing you have to score 3 goals.

  49. Alex Ice Cream

I can’t stand Drivelpoo in the CL and would have rather Madrid (who I also detest) knock them out.

The luck of Drivelpoo borders on the supernatural. I was even glad Chelsea KO’ed them last season. The first and last time I ever want Chelsea to win. Ever.

  50. Alex Ice Cream

Their first goal was a goal though. There was no foul on Pepe – he just slipped over.

  51. Even if AIC, at 1 nil there is hope but to go down 2 is almost impossible, that hand, er shoulder ball penalty was a disaster for Real.

  52. the thing about last seasons CL qtr v Lpool was how much influence the different crowds had over the two legs.
I was at both games, including at anfield being in the front row right along the side of the pitch when Babel went over for their pen. It wasn’t his dive that got the pen, it was the Kop, the noise was just massive. If our crowd was as influentual we would do a lot better.

Incidentally, I was a lone Gooner amongst their supporters in that section on that night, and I jumped up and down and got v excited when we got our goals, especially Theo – and all I got was a lot of relatively good natured abuse.
I wouldn’t have dared do that at Stamford Bridge.

  53. sorry, not Theo’s goal, Theo’s run for Ade
    (you knew what i meant)

  54. Alex Ice Cream

    Matty,

Yes. Even Ade couldn’t miss an open goal from 1 yard although he missed a virtual open goal from about 6 yards just before.

Penalties or not we should have won anyway. Nik clearing off the line from Cesc and shocking defending at Anfield cost us. It proved to be the end of Senderos’ career at Arsenal. His defending was unforgivable in that game.

  55. COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. My team to beat Roma.

    Almunia.

Sagna- Gallas- Djourou (no Kolo)- Clichy.

    Eboue- Denilson- Song.

Diaby (No Nasri, waste time with the ball).

    Eduardo- Rvp.

    Very well balanced squad.

    2-1, Arsenal.

    AW’s Team.

    Almunia.

    Sagna- Kolo- Gallas- Clichy.

    Eboue- Denilson- Diaby- Nasri.

    RVP- Eduardo.

  57. Nasri waste time with the ball ??

    What’s this ? A new scapegoat lc ???

  58. Muppet,
You’ll see tonight what I meant.

  59. So when Nasri scored 2 goals against Man U, he wasn’t direct ? is that what you mean ?

  60. Alex I Drivel A Lot

Its a shame that Arshavin is cup-tied but at least Ade is still injured!

  61. Muppet,
One reason, for his lack of fighting spirit (no good for away games).
Second, he dwells too much with the ball with far many side passing, which will allow Roma to regroup defensively.

  62. I just think we will have too much for Roma tonight.

Two points really. Firts, amidst all this soul searching this season even those of us who have defended the team have perhaps lost sight of the incredible strength of out squad when all are fit. Or nearly so.

Too much infighting rather than concentrating on the enemy, which is everyone else. This has distracted us, maybe the team too. Yet, no one will do us any favours, we are not manu or Pool. We have to earn every advance.

Second, look where we are all of a sudden. Take the debate today asto who should start. Notice how relaxed we are about it because we don’t really believe that it matters very much. We are strong everywhere with a strong bench, whoever starts.

Shows what a bit of confidence can do. To us and the team.

    Go Gunners.

  63. It’s false to say that Senderos’s defending was unforgivable, since most people have forgiven him. Only a handful of vindictive freaks are still holding out.

  64. Now that’s the funniest thing I ever heard about Nasri…..Come on Muppet, you know better mate, I think this comment about Nasri was meant to be a joke….I hope.

Even Howard woudn’t say that about Nasri.

  65. Ah, so Nasri’s too blame for our barren run last month? Phew, everything’s so much simpler when you have a scapegoat.

  66. …TO blame…

  67. Alex Ice Cream

    Poliziano,

Unfortunately for Phil AW was not one of those who forgave him. He was dropped for the next game, v ManU, did not play for Arsenal for the remainder of the season and was shipped out to Milan in the summer.

I like Phil but he was p1ss poor in Lpool game. After a bright start his development went inot reverse which was a real shame. It was right to let him go.

  68. I doubt that forgiveness was a factor in letting Senderos go on loan to Milan. He might yet return, for all we know.

  69. Alex Ice Cream

    PZ,

AW decided after Lpool that Senderos would not make it at Arsenal which is why he was loaned with a view to a sale. The only reason it was not a straight sale is that Milan did not want to buy him.

Unforgivable was perhaps harsh but his defending was supremely inept. Losing Hyypia who moves at the pace of an arthritic sloth for the corner and goal that changed the game was woeful. Phil then let Torres turn and shoot in the box by dropping off him when even Titus Bramble would have realised that he needed to close the space between himself and Torres. Pathetic really and it cost us a semi-final place.

  70. Alex Ice Cream

    PZ,

If Phil returns it will only be because Milan don’t want him and not because we want him back.

  71. Alex U Drivel A Lot

AW decided after Lpool that Senderos would not make it at Arsenal which is why he was loaned with a view to a sale. The only reason it was not a straight sale is that Milan did not want to buy him.

  72. F. Frederick Skitty

I’m seriously excited. Off to the 12 Pins asap.

If we put in a good performance here it will be a real springboard for the rest of the season. I can hardly belive that I actually want Eboue to play and that I expect him to play well – it’s a funny old game!

I believe patience to be an essential element in getting the best out of any football team or player. Arsene seems to be playing a game of “chicken” with some of our less desirable supporters as well as the media. Tonight could be a definitive moment in our journey to become the greatest club in the world.

Come on boys let’s make this just the first of our triumphant visits to Rome this season!

  73. Alex Ice Cream

    FFS,

I should be in the 12 Pins tonight. It will be manic…

    Come on Arsenal

  74. Frank….you there?

  75. I think it is going to a special night for Arsenal, we will see Arsenal at its best!

woe be unto our remaining opponents!

  76. G4E, no . today?

It seems like that comment about Nasri threw you rythm off?

  77. That account of the loan of Senderos is wholly speculative. My suspicion is that Senderos wanted the loan. We know he was devastated by his role in the defeat to Liverpool. Perhaps he felt he needed a move, and he and Wenger decided he could go on loan and make a decision after a year out.

  78. Hahaha Paul N, you’re exactly right about my . today.

This comment about Nasri was so funny that I had to “Point it” out first :)

  79. I agree PZ, I am sure Senderos felt like he has the world on his shoulders.

  80. Pz –
    Nice to read such loyalty.

Interesting that old Titus is still getting stick; like Eboue, he’s turning into a decent player, last i saw. His confidence was shattered similarly when away teams began cheering him.

  81. Yeh, first things first G4E!

I am with you that it was a sad attempt at humor.

  82. re Senderos – nothing is black and white. I think Poli has summed it up pretty well.

Granted, Phil had a bit of a mare that night at Anfield. Me, I prefer to remember his role in our defence when we got the the CL final in Paris. He was outstanding in that Cup run.

And btw, the pen was not Senderos’s fault, it was Toure’s. And if Sagna was fit and Kolo played CB – we would have hilled them over 2 legs.

    Come on Arsenal.

  83. Drivel : please..some of us are feeling a little unwell here. A bit of compassion..

  84. hilled them ? that’s a new way of saying killed them.

  85. I agree totally Poliziano, I think Senderos was the one who wanted away and a fresh start….it may work for him or may not. He is getting more games in the Milan team now.

AIC talks like he was sitting with Arsene Wenger over a cup of cappuccino and Wenger told him “here is what I’m going to do with Senderos”. He is so certain that he is right, he doesn’t even bother to use “I think” or “Maybe”

  86. I don’t watch much Italian football, but…

Senderos is getting games at the moment. And Milan’s form – despite a couple of setbacks for which I don’t think he was really at fault – has generally picked up with his inclusion. Between now and the end of the season he may well do enough for them to want to keep him.

I’ve always thought the errors would diminish with age; he is so clearly a confidence player and I expect that a bit more maturity would help him recover from the odd mishap a bit faster.

Meanwhile the choice between Senderos and Silvestre at the back simply ain’t no choice at all.

  87. Good post as usual Yogi. Yes plenty of goals like that please! All the media hype is taken up by Mourinho vs Fergie battle of the Tiatans Part 2 and Arsenal V Roma the sideshow. It almost seems like we will never get any credit until our path to the final is littered with the corpses of Manure, Liverpoo and Chelski. We are going to kick them all in the goonies.

AIC as optimistic as ever? Ade finished the game off in the San Siro and scored a goal in every Champions League game after that culminating in our exit at Liverpool. He has been poor this season by his own high standards. I expect the Romans to put up a fight but after we score I predict they will be put to the sword. I am personally looking forward to losing my voice after winning the game emphatically in our curtain raiser in the Stadio Olympico before the Final. Eboue to score.

  88. Nothing against Silvestre – I just prefer Senderos.

  89. It was definitely a sad attempt at humor Paul N, You can’t describe it better than that.

  90. It was the refs fault damn it!

  91. Wenger and AIC go way back.

  92. 0-2 Tonight.

    Why can’t it start now?

  93. Mr. Bob, patience my friend but I CANT WAIT EITHER! ha ha

  94. Hey CBob….I will take you up on the offer of 0-2.

I too wish it would start now, plus I’m freaking pissed off at ESPN, they show every single Man Sh*t CL game, and not even a single game for Arsenal…f*ck ESPN,1,2,360, and Classic.

  95. Is that so, not even replay G4E? It is on espn360 live no?

  96. Alex Ice Cream

    All,

I like Phil and have defended him on many occasions. He was great in 2005-6 on the Prem as well.

PZ I think you are mistaken as the loan has an option to buy at the end with Milan to chose . If we just wanted to loan him, why the option to buy?

I would definitely prefer him to Silvestre though and would have no problem if he came back.

He was hopeless on that night though.

  97. Patience? We’ll make patients out of them tonight Paul.

As for ESPN, they will be begging, begging for the privelige of showing Arsenal matches this time next year. We will say, well OK, just for our friends in the States but you cannot show any more manure. Enough of that cr@p.

  98. Alex Ice Cream

    G4E,

That’s right. Why would use “I think” when AW told me himself. Phil also phoned me for advice and I told him to go.

Anyway, we should go through tonight, especially since Ade is not playing.

  99. Iraqgoals.com, G4E. Apologies: Don’t know how to cut and paste yet.. maybe Arse21 will teach me one day. Stream usually fine, but you have to sit about 6 feet from the screen.

  100. AIC – You are developing a certain pawky vein of humour…:-)

  101. None Paul N. Not sure about 360 though….I didn’t bother to check :)

Yes CBob, any network will be groveling for our games.

  102. I work in manchester and don’t have sky, trying to find a pub showing it here is harder than Jacko in mothercare.

  103. Thanks PBoy….I will check this link out. It will be hard to sit 6 feet away from the screen at work though, don’t you think? :)

  104. Yes it’s on espn360, just checked.

  105. “.. harder tan Jacko in Mothercare…” Heh, heh heh!

  106. “Ade is not playing” seems to be our best means of attack AIC?

I dont agree with you but that is pretty funny!

  107. We know AIC….We know. We envy your relationship with you imaginary friend Monsieur Wenger.

  108. I had a friend who once said that he gave Ronald Reagan mint tea beacuse he was sick! yep his name was Reagan from that point forward.

  109. Thanks Paul N, I will check 360. Is it a membership site?

  110. Thanks Paul N, I will check 360. Is it a membership site?

  111. hehe..never thought of that G4E…how is your boss when it comes to you watching footie rather than doing ‘work’ ? Can you whoop and shout (or, awful thought, groan and weep ?)

  112. No G4E, you shouldnt have any issues.

  113. …”The elephant is the largest of them all, and in intelligence approaches the nearest to man. It understands the language of its country, it obeys commands, and it remembers all the duties which it has been taught. It is sensible alike of the pleasures of love and glory, and, to a degree that is rare among men even, possesses notions of honesty, prudence, and equity; it has a religious respect also for the stars, and a veneration for the sun and the moon.”….this is a quote by Pliny the Elder…who obviously knew his f*cking elephants….I presume the elephants he knew were speaking Latin….which explains why the Romans are comfortable with our elephants….they had to go to the trouble of naming his nephew Pliny so that his reference to himself as Pliny the Elder did not give away the fact that he was completely f*cking nuts…..actually the fact that he was the only bloke who rowed towards Vesuvius when it erupted all over Pompey gives some indication of his mental state……doesn’t matter though…because my team are going to win tonight…..want to know why……its becuase we are hip…we are cool…we are Arsenal and we rule….lalalalaaaaah…lalalaaah…lalaaah..clickclickclick…

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  114. Consols..
We are all nervous, bro – but that kind of filth.. honestly! And you grounded me for some lingerie i seem to recall… :-)

  115. Well, not Frank..he doesn’t get nervous…

  116. I’m lucky I’m in a secluded location Pboy, but I honestly still work while watching…I swear :)

  117. G4E, I too am pissed that the Arsenal game is not on ESPN. I’m off to an “Irish” pub to watch it and am skipping out on work for an hour or so. There are a few other Gooners here in Denver so we’ll be “down the pub” cheering on the boys. God D$mn ESPN!!

  118. I hear ya Gris Gris….Enjoy the game and cheer as much as you can :)

We will deal with ESPN later…..

  119. Just wish I knew some songs…I doubt there will be anyone watching who knows any either…

  120. We love you Arsenal will do just fine….:)

  121. (to the tune of “Bicycle Race” by Queen)

I want to see The Ar-se-nal
I want to see the boys
I want to see the Ar-se-nal
Stand up and make some f*ckin noise

  122. There you go Gris Gris….great song by Steve.

  123. 55 minutes…I can feel my heart beat starting to increase already…..

  124. A bit rich from you Pb. I still have nightmares over those ‘objects’ you thrust upon us a few days ago.

    ARSENAL!

  130. eboue`s friend

    come on arsenalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  131. NO DOUBT! NO FEAR!

  132. Consols –
:-) No more nightmares! Dream time now, God Willing!

  133. damn it!

  134. What was that about?

  135. Sloppy defending. Buck up! We are the Arsenal.

  136. Come on Arsenal…let’s score….

  137. Not sounding good.. can’t get a single stream; maybe at half-time, someone ? Thanks.

  138. Pb try sopcast…starsports.

  139. This game needs more Eduardo.

  140. I agree Blackstock!

  141. Why do we throw-in to a crowd?

  142. Walcott, Vela, Eduardo – the team needs a spark.

  143. I agree with Blackstock and Paul N. We may only get half chances today and we need our crozilian around.

  144. I just realized that when a cross comes into the box the mid drops back? Is that good?

  145. If only Eboue’s end product was as menacing as his runs into the box. Van Persie looks too eager….wait, your chance will come.

  146. I think that goal went to Eboue’s head! ha ha!

  147. stonewall, we are lucky but playin piss fukin poor

  148. wenger get your whip out

  149. Excellent decision there from the referee.

  150. Replay clearly shows it was no penalty.

  151. Clichy should know better that that..Motta went down easily though. We are still in this.

  152. wow, we looked good early but have been rather poor since the goal.

    Was that a penalty?

The line up is too cautious for me, we need more creativity it seems.

  153. Queen of Suburbia

Not even close to a penalty.

This game is looking set-up for Mr Walcotts finest hour.

  154. Cant catch the game.Watching inter vs manu( quite goood actually). Gonna watch the rerun. Are we really playing that badly? Who are the culptits?:P

  155. It was a dive – a clever dive – but still a dive.

  156. Poliziano,

seen them givin more then not.

  157. What was up with the goal, how could the ball pass by everybody to a man (in the box) who no one even see’s.

  158. Frank's biggest fan

We will score any time now. Just one chance, and whoops, game over for them. With Juan injured, and Baptista playing in Midfield, it should be bit easier for us to get the win. Keep the faith! COYGSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  159. Queen of Suburbia

If i agreed with gambling i’d have £5 on 2-1 to Roma.

    Walcott in 82mins.

  160. Diaby is immense! A great half for him. As for the rest…
The team needs to regroup and think a bit. It is 0-0 and all for the taking. COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

  161. Ateeb, we are not looking too good but I think, we need some more creativity down the flanks ans we need to start getting into the box when the ball is crossed. I mean, I saw it plain as day, Sagna crosses and the Mid stop and drop back! too cautious, we must play WITHOUT FEAR!

  162. Queen of Suburbia

Ateeb – i’d say the culprit is 4-4-2.

I’d like to see 4 -4 – 1 -1 in the second half…keep the ball a bit more stop the midfiled being overrun.

  163. Frank's biggest fan

Diaby had a good half, and I think apart from the goal, it hasn’t been vintage attacking from Roma. It’s fairly comfortable. Before the game, we knew the goal will come when they tire a bit. As soon as Dudu and theo are in the pitch, it will be much better. I think one of them would already begin the half.

  164. Eduardo and RVP to score in the 2nd!

  165. TVU – ch73829 – US setanta -

  166. Queen of Suburbia

Theo on for Eboue at about 60mins seems logical.

  167. The replay of their goal is painful, Gallas and Toure thinking the other would clear it.

Almumia has also been great, excellent double save!

  168. Queen of Suburbia

Ref should have booked their player for the dive.

  169. Yeh not 82.

  170. Thanks. We always play better in the second half. And we’ve got players that can make a difference on the bench. So better keep our cool.

Let me update you on the many-inter match. I have a feeling that Inter might steal it. They’re playing quite good, Ibrahimovich is on form. Unlucky not to have scored twice. And the culprit for the goal conceded was Viera.

  171. Commentary off.

  172. Lets take care of business!

  173. Queen of Suburbia

I may have to kill Alan Smith.

  174. If Eboue didnt create all these chances we wouldnt be so frustrated in the first place but boy..is he testing our patience!

  175. Queen of Suburbia

Bit more space now – they are tiring. Walcott is going to hurt them.

  176. Aah..Walcott and Eduardo warming up. Its high time.

  177. Come on Arsenal…please God.

I can’t watch, no link it working

  178. G4E, everything has gone dead!

  179. I know Paul N. And I don’t have the nerves to keep looking around…

  180. We’ve used the width of the pitch and won so many corners. If we had converted just one..

  181. Alex, we are scared to committ on corners and crosses.

  182. did espn360 go dark for anyone else?

  183. These dudes are taking plenty of breathers. It’s unsettling us and getting frustrating now.

  184. I hope the ref is counting all these stoppages.

  185. espn 360 is gone!

  186. wth is up with espn360?

  187. yep it is gone……gone with the wind

  188. if we are getting in all these crosses and corners then surely eds is the man to be on the end.

  189. Just cant understand why our substitutes havent come on. This is leaving it quite late in the day.

  190. Theo coming on.

  191. Eboue goes off.

  192. pizarro is an old pro and knows what he is doing………………

  193. This is not fun. Streams down; Arsenal playing poorly. COME ON!!!!!!!

Thank the Lord for ‘the Beast’…

  194. Arshavin makes a big difference to Arsenal!

  195. Come on Arsenal just 1-1

  196. Baptista could have buried us. Praise the Lord!

  197. omg my heart cant take this

  198. Denilson and Van Persie havent been upto it today. Eduardo should be given a chance now..

  199. Ok…..You guys are scaring me now. Are we really playing that poorly?

  200. Stress.. but fun, in a horrible kind of way. Robin..get a grip!!

  201. espn360 works for about 3 seconds then goes bank for 5 minutes, eh

  202. Did one of their players got sent off?

  203. Can’t handle the tension…some update pls

  204. ffs wtf its now every 5 mins one of them goes down?!?!?!?

  205. Toure heads inches wide with a minute left…

  206. no both teams still have 11 men

  207. wtf is going on this game’s giving me brain damage

  208. goal!

  209. just kidding

  210. rvp and toure have both had good chances by their standards but alas its still 1-1 on aggregate

  211. leftpinky, you are a twat

  212. 90 mins+2 Van Persie connects with a left-footed volley on the edge of the box, and Arsenal win a corner. The ball is headed back across goal to Van Persie and then onto Toure’s head two yards out with Doni flapping hopelessly. But it’s a yard over the bar! Oh my word!

  213. 1-1 ft omg extra time awaits

  214. That’s f*cked – Roma took at least 10 minutes off that second half.

  215. The game has gone into extra time guys. Lets hope our fitness sees us through the next half hour.

  216. Frank's biggest fan

Theo looks sharp. Dudu could finish if it falls to him around their box. We have to be patient. The goal will come. Come on ARSENAL!!!!

  217. is Eduardo in?

  218. That’s ok. Get to the extra time safely, and see them off there. Just hope it doesnt goes to the penalties. When was the last time we went on penalties?

  219. Frank's biggest fan

LMAO…Guys, it really seems like we could flick it by just one chance. WE WILL! Just wait and watch.

    Come on ARSENALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  220. …get a grip you f*cking wimps…you sound like, Alan ‘we are all going to die’ Smith…..in the bag in extra time……Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…Arsenal….ARSENAL…clickclickclick..

  221. wanna see vela on and denilson off we need to put this to bed………..

  222. damn it looked like 360 was back on

  223. fook totti has some serious bandaging………

  224. Come on Arsenal lets finish Roma now!

  225. Yes Eduardo is on for Bendtner. Bendtner was quite good for us today. Hope Van P steps up for us now.

  226. Alan we are all going to die smith!! ha ha love that one.

  227. Had to leave the pub, now on the train. Wtf is going on. Sounds like eduardo and van persie and toure could have won it at the death. Still in it to win it! Come on you Gunners!

  228. i don’t want this to go to penalties please no cause you know that is unbearable

  229. where has our passing game gone?

  230. Walcott is looking good but he is being man marked quite well by Riise. Hope he shakes him off soon.

  231. UGH!!!!!

  232. We are playing afraid, Come on NO FEAR!

  233. Ateeb, please what’s ugh!!!!

  234. ugh means rvp should have hit the target…….

  235. Half time at extra time. Its still 1-1. We are definitely playing with our handbrake on.

  236. Thanks Silver.

  237. we dont look like scoring.

  238. sopcast channel 6543

  239. forget the cantonese its still football

  240. If it does go to penalties, who wld take them – RVP, Eduardo, Nasri &…?

  241. clichy getting beat down today, their right winger is quite the player

  242. diaby would be one of my takers too

  243. i can see diaby missing a pen all day long.

  244. What are our chances at the penalties? Poor I would say. Our players are poor in shooting. :(

  245. Come on Nasri!

  246. I’d love to have crazy Jens stopping the penalties, if nothing else, he could get into people’s heads

  247. we are definelty lacking composure

  248. roma have run out of steam this is there for the taking bring VELA ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  249. maybe v’ll hv the benefit of the away goal in the shootout as well :)

come on gooners…lets finish it in open play

  250. has eduardo touched the ball yet?

  251. Totti has been reduced to shoot on site

  252. 7 mins….

  253. if our penalties are anything like our passing today we are fu**ed

  254. v r spraying the passes :(

  255. DukeGoonem agreed

  256. we need lady luck to shine on us fuck sake………

  257. Damn Theo almost had a run at goal!

  264. We are playing not to lose, I hate that!

  265. Shootout time!

  266. Queen of Suburbia

    Penalties.

This should bring the labour on if nothing else.

  267. Penalties it is. May for the force be with Almunia and our penalty takers.

  268. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFf

  269. I can see us missing 2 penalties.

It’s all up to Almunia’s quick reaction to win it for us.

  270. I’ve not nails left!!!!

  271. I am so pissed off

  272. Frank's biggest fan

Chance for Almunia to show his worth. COYG!!!!!!

  273. Toure might take one I guess

  274. Come on Almunia, you can do it

  275. Queen of Suburbia

Nasri doesn’t look confident. I hope he is inside.

  276. diaby looked like he was about to cry

  277. PLease please………..

  278. Queen of Suburbia

    Eddie missed.

  279. dud blocked

  280. blocked! alumina!!!!!

  281. Nasri’s the best, no doubt

  282. What’s going on?

  283. This silence is not good….??

  284. diaby scores! Roma must score, we’re in sudden death

  285. 6-6, alumni guessed right on riise but too slow and crappy

  286. Frank's biggest fan

  290. Queen of Suburbia

    We win G4E!

  291. we are through :)

  292. HOOOOOORRRRRRAAAAAYYYYY!!!!

Thoroughly undeserved but Arsenal are through. In truth Roma didn’t offer much but Arsenal were poor, poor, poor.

  293. F*CKING YESS!!!

    I have *the* worst indigestion.

  294. fook me thank god!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  295. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Phew

  296. Thanks for godd new QoS

  297. F*cking Yes! ! ! ! !

  298. holy crap my heart nearly gave up.

  299. Well well well…!!!!!! ;)

  300. f****cking heavens…..thats is the most nerve wracking game i have ever watched under Arsenal

  301. Ok, negatives out!!! Diaby was immense, the team got the job done in a hostile atmosphere and when things were not clicking, the sign of champions!!!

  302. You’ve got to feel sorry for Roma.. Sorry Roma

David platt… you are a TOSSER

    yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  303. my heart is still beating a million beats a second OMG thank god!!!!!!!!!1

  304. that guy pulled a roberto baggio there!

  305. I feel for Roma but it is own destiny

all the best in their domestic campaigns

  306. Now we’ll kick on. Put that game behind us. Rotation for the weekend, fresh legs will help us deal with Blackburn.

Roll on the rest of the season!

What a bunch of legends those pen takers were!!

  307. :D :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

  308. Queen of Suburbia

I’m not kidding I’ve started having contractions!

  309. all the best Roma…you gave us real game

  310. Oh what a f**** confidence booster this game will be for the players. I never want arsenal to go through penalties again. F***8 had a heart attack twice.

  311. “I’m not kidding I’ve started having contractions!”

An auspicious beginning of ever there was one!

  312. The Arse, the arses, and even more arses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  313. its 3:30 AM here and I have office in 5 hours later, but worth it!

    We love you Arsenal….We do
    We love you Arsenal….We do
    AaaaaRrsenal…..We love you

  314. In that case, I suppose he’ll have to be called Abou.

  315. …or Max.

  316. I hope it is providence and that we are meant to return later this summer to Rome. Yes we were quite poor but our spirit was not broken even when our finisher – dudu missed his penalty. RVP, Nasri, Walcott, Toure, Sagna, Diaby and Denilson take a bow.

  317. I died a thousand times in the last 10 minutes. Thank God we are through.

  318. Good luck QoS!!!

  319. May Wenger be with you, QoS.

  320. Denilson stepped up for the 5th & scored…wt maturity!

  321. Roma didn’t deserve sh*t. No sense of sportsmanship whatsoever. They shaved a good ten minutes of that game sitting on their a*ses. Where the ref got 4 mins added time from I have no idea.

We had an off-day but still came through. Tells you all you need to know about this team.

  322. Frank's biggest fan

Roma sat back and got what they wanted, Penalty shootouts. Bad luck, Arsenal players didn’t crumble under pressure. Says a lot about this team. I’m telling you, there is something magical about that jersey, and this team.

    COYG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  323. bendtner played well

  324. Oh my God – I’m a wreck!

  325. Rock on Muntazir :)

  326. Frank's biggest fan

“our spirit was not broken even when our finisher – dudu missed his penalty. RVP, Nasri, Walcott, Toure, Sagna, Diaby and Denilson take a bow.”

A resounding “YES”. Many under-21 players among the penalty takers. Whoa, what confidence, and mental stability? I just hope people don’t put that down to poor GK by Doni.

  327. Oh. MY. GODDD!!!

What a horrible, nerve-racking game. We f*cking did it though, and my sanity is still intact (just about). Heroes on the pitch. God bless Arsenal. We’re on our way!!!!

  328. Yeah…good luck QoS

  329. “our spirit was not broken even when our finisher – dudu missed his penalty. RVP, Nasri, Walcott, Toure, Sagna, Diaby and Denilson take a bow.”

    Absolutely!

  330. David Platt – you are a such a negative tosser… just go home and do everybody a favour.. watch something exciting.. have some alcohol.. whatever.. relive your most exciting moments on the pitch….just don’t appear as a TV pundit

  331. so many unbelievable things happened on earth during the last few minutes….

a few people died several times but lived to tell the tale.

others shitted in their pants while other pissed on their seats.

above all, many took in the best breathe they have ever had in their lifetime.

    long live the Arsenal

  332. Good luck QoS, what a night for PoS to make an appearance!

  333. The Agony and the Ecstasy! Feel drained… but each scorer showed calm and – oh man, was a bit worried by Bacary.. looking so casual.. heroes!

  334. Yes, good luck QoS! Hope the labour goes more smoothly than our qualification.

  335. Frank's biggest fan

Mute the commentary, I didn’t drop a sweat. ;-) (believe it or not)

  336. The whole team would have matured by a yr each in this one game!

  337. you are not human Frank’s biggest fan….fact!

  338. Yep, FG.. any closer and one is looking at dramas ! Ok…bed…too much.. QoS – bed!!

  339. QoS,

Take care. All the very best.

  340. Now I hope their isn’t any post match fan’s violence in Rome. Roma fans would be really angry.

  341. David Platt has some kind of axe to grind. Don’t know what. Probably passed over for an Arsenal coaching role, or sore when his Arsenal career came to an end for some reason. What an almighty tosser.

  342. Me too Muntazir, but I’m sure they’ve been briefed on where not to go etc…

    Best of luck QoS.

  343. What was Platt on about exactly? Didn’t catch any of his comments.

  344. muppet oh please tell what platt was saying in was streaming as my wife if watching jade goody and couldn’t ask her to turn it over.

  345. What does “jade goody” mean?

  346. Platt was on Sky. Made repeated references to the better team ‘Manchester United’, how poor Arsenal were, how Wenger should look back at the match and be ‘sorry’ for the performance. Looked like a man who had just been told his ferrari had broken down after the match, and continued to whine negatively.

  347. Doesn’t he have Italian allegiance anyway? He played for Sampdoria and a couple of others, no? And his best moments as an England player happened at Italia ’90. So maybe Platt’s just annoyed that there are no Italian teams left.

    Not our problem though!

Ah, I can relax at last.

  348. Frank's biggest fan

I liked the way RVP cheered up Dudu after his penalty. He went and pinched his nose up. Great stuff there. I know RVP didn’t have a great game, but we need players like that. He ran his heart out for the team. Now I hope he gets his well deserved rest for the weekend game, and regain his form. :-)

  349. Platt was complaining AW didn’t get the bal right, that Arsenal created nothing & that they were lucky they were not up against a team like Barca, ManU, Liverpool etc who all created & scored so many goals. That he whole heartedly disagrees with AW that the players would have gained confidence from the match.

  350. Wow,i didnt get to watch the penalties, Big Ups to the penalty takers!

Some didnt think our players could shoot well but we stepped up big time, kinda reminds me of the FA Cup win over Man U.

May The Lord give you a safe delivery QoS!
    What a miracle!

  351. Denilson became a man tonight. Very pleased for Sagna and Diaby scoring their penalties too, and Nasri was ice cold. Unfortunately Denilson didn’t play very well, our defence was shambolic end of, but we are through and that is that.

Bendtner looked good, he was carrying some of our attacking play. He, Eboue and Song should play 90 against Blackburn and win it for us. I’d like Vela to start that one too, and please let’s give Clichy a rest if Gibbs is up to it.

  352. Muppet, commentary off is your friend! I refuse to let those pundits wind me up any longer – had it been one of the other English teams, they would be praising their grit etc etc, but of course, foreign Arsenal are incapable of displaying those qualities!

  353. Passenal, yes… you have a point :-) a bit of anger management.

  354. Winning on penalties is far better than winning it in the 90 min. These players will learn so much from this experience in a tense atmosphere they held their nerves and came through it it felt like a final.
Very pleased indeed. Forget about criticism and lets enjoy it. HAPPY

  355. What does “Denilson became a man tonight” mean?

  356. Its ok Muppet, Passenal, we will splash some rotten eggs on their faces some time soon. I tell you, they will all choke in their spit soon.

  357. Who is this pratt, platt dude.

he is a straight clown if he thinks all the teams he has mentioned have won all their matches in style!

We are onto the quaters and thats all that matters!

  358. I like what CB said. Denilson, like many of his teammates, didn’t have the best game tonight, but he showed loads of maturity in tucking that pen away. Remember that this is his first full season in the first team. That took a bloody massive amount of heart to come through a shaky game and still be counted at the end.

  359. …excatly Moopay….exactly…..Fatty Platt from manchester was a trifle upset…well he probably eats a lot of those….because his in-laws are probably going to give him a rart gooin orver ternaaht…

…look people this is the most difficult competition in the world…regardless of what Alan ‘ow slit my wrists” Smith says…this is the hardest f*cking stadium in the world to play in as an away club…unlike the Arsenal Stadium…our youngsters were f*cking amazing tonight……f*cking amazing….

    Pratt you are…er well you…you are…a…perfect Pratt…no wrong actually you are a whore…and a pr*ck….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL:

  360. Who the heck is David Platt…was he any good as a player? Who gave him a name?

  361. Poliziano – I think OneOfUs explained what I meant by it.

  362. what kind of a name is platt?

  363. …when oh when will the TV companies realise that we don’t want commentators or pundits..we just want the normal stadium sounds….I hate silent movies….actually I quite like Buster Keaton….and I used to watch Arsenal with the sound off and music on…but all I want are good camera angles and the sounds of a football stadium…I know more about my team than the pr*ck pundits anyway…..

  364. No he didn’t. The blogger formerly known as Big Al makes sensible comments. Saying that somebody “became a man” is a cliche of the worst kind. I don’t know when Denilson became a man. He has been a man all season for us. He was a man when he volunteered to take that penalty, a man when he set himself to strike the ball, and a man when he scored.

  365. Pliziano probably thinking Physiologically

  366. :D :D :D

    no words needed..:D

  367. Ok, maybe not :)

  368. You know what? I don’t care how we played. I care that when our boys had to show that mental toughness that Arsene is always talking about, they stepped up and did so.

I also agree with Le Gunner that this experience will stand them in better stead than a sparkling performance and comprehensive victory would have done. We all know they can do fabulous football, but that penalty shootout was about nerve and desire.

  369. …Top 8….might be a surprise or two coming your way this season….yes …I think that might be so…..not over yet…not at all….

  370. G4E, Paul N

David Platt is an ex Arsenal player, who played for Arsenal between 1995 and 1998 as his last big club. Before that he played for Villa, and then went famously to Italy during 91-95 where he played for Bari, Juventus and then Sampdoria. At that time it was rare (still is) for british players to go to Italy. He did quite well. His other notable achievement was that he was quite influential in England reaching the semi finals of the 1990 world cup in Italy. I say influential, he scored a pretty good volley against Belgium to get us into the quarters.

Otherwise, he doesn’t have any notable success in the european cup. He won the UEFA cup, but that’s about it. So on that basis, he should keep his mouth shut. What a pillock.

  371. Poliziano, nothing cynical, I was implying that he was a boy, who in normal circumstances would have been an understudy to Cesc or Diaby the two AW at the beginning of the season identified as his main midfield players. Denilson has grabbed the chances that have come his way to make AW say that ‘he is the most under-rated player’ & Denilson showed his maturity & confidence in stepping up the take the crucial 5th penalty, prompting me to say he is not a junior player learning his trade (considering Brazil as well) any longer at the senior level, he has become a seasoned pro himself!

  372. I re-watched the pens on sky + and still nearly crapped my pants.

Some of the pens from both sides were pretty poor weren’t they, the pressure on those players was enormous.

Please let’s be back there in May.

Respect to the fans who were out there, they did us proud, great to see the players throw their shirts into the crowd at the end.

With all that physical and mental stress, Saturday gets even harder.

And yes, David Platt, you made a total knob of yourself.

  373. …people say my team is failing this season…people say potential is not enough….worst season ever they say….and these people claim to be Arsenal supporters…….but what these people don’t understand is that this side is probably in the top four teams in Europe….and have not yet realised their potential…these people are utterly, utterly stupid…

  374. OK, it’s late here.

    I like this photo:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00501/arse_585x350_501809a.jpg

Good comments tonight (not that I’m a good judge): Nobody buying the bullsh*t. We deserved to go through on our first leg performance alone. We’re in exactly the same position as the rest of the last 8 now. Who cares how we got there! For all Liverpool’s heroics, they’re no better placed that we are to win this thing now.

  375. …I thought the Arsenal pens were very good, Matty…Eduardo did not get enough power into his…but the others were nigh on perfect….

  376. …placed than we are…

  377. Thanks Muppet, An ex Arsenal player, huh? He’s a hater!

  378. I think we have done really well considering the pressure and the amount of noise from Roma fans you can have the best coach or manager in the world but what you learn from these tense experiences is priceless.

  379. I agree One, we deserved to go through!

  380. Fantastic photo, Big One!

  381. This was a great test of composure, I agree the team will be stronger for it.

  382. Oops I thought I made the comment about Denilson!

  383. …this is the sort of result that this team needs for them to kick on….a shot across the bows…but the knowledge that if you keep going it will happen…there were a lot of wily old heads out there for Roma tonight….there was some respect…but in the end the new and better team won….nobody wins in that f*cking stadium…nobody….oh except Arsenal….

  384. Like the picture Big Al, hopefully we will have another one like that when we win the title…(I’m not going to say which one).

  385. Siva, you’re innocent!

  386. Thanks Muppet, I remember his England goal and that he played for Arsenal. He must have been ignored by Arsene in some post or another. Most of the players who bad mouth us probably didn’t get what they want from Arsenal or were unsuccessful in their careers.

F*ck Platt…who cares what he think?

I agree with FunGunner, I don’t care how we win…we are there, and now will look to win the next game up. That’s all what matters.

  387. I also thought the penalties were good.

  388. OneOfUs- that picture was taken on the 27 th of may 2009.

  389. That is a great photo Big Al – it just shows how much it means to the players. They will have gained so much from this experience.

  390. the Quarter Final 1st L is on the 7th of April by then we will have a full strength squad Fab and all and we shall give any of the teams left a run for their money

  391. Frank's biggest fan

I love you guys in ACLF, except for few c**ts of course. And most certainly the ex-Arsenal pundits – m*****fuckers. Jeez. and not to mention few other blogs. They’re all losers. Arent they?

  392. We love you too FBF….another nice pictures, love it.

  393. I wonder who would have taken the next pen, Clichy or Gallas. Then Almunia…

Great composure to win that – the 1st leg was where we should have won this tie but we made sure we won it in the end

  394. RASERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    They did it!
In Rome and the intense pressure of penalties.
    Wow.

Roma fought hard, and cleverly, the midfield battle was intense. We were … unrelaxed, frenetic, brittle. Lots of dribbling, not enough passing … a sign of nerves, adrenalin pumping. We matched though, always looked like we might score anytime, but we did not dominate.
But, RASERS, THE SPIRIT WAS IMMENSE!!
That’s what we talking about. The team. The spirit. Big hearts win.

    Love reading your comments above.

    GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  395. Morning all!

What a great day to be a Gooner!

  396. Morning Muntazir, ZimPaul……It is a great day to be a gooner indeed..

I only watched the 1st half so far, I don’t think we were that bad at all. The goals (light one to concede) kind of reduced our confidence a bit, but we were cautiously trying. I think apart from the first 15 minute when Roma scored and a couple of good saves from Almunia, the first half was uneventful and low on quality overall from both teams.

It doesn’t rally matter how we played, after watching how the Roma fans were fired up for the game, we really showed some nerves and fought till the last penalty kick.

CL on the shelf now, back to PL…I just hope this long tough game will not effect the PL game on Saturday.

The sky is the limit for the Gunners.

  397. Hell’s teeth …
    A defining moment …

And now we face Blackburn with Vela, Arsh, Song, Djourou, Gibbs, Ramsey fresh and Theo, Dudu, Eboue, Bendy not unduly taxed.

  398. Yep, a scrappy game, tactically that’s how Roma planned it, good plan too.

    That first goal was silly.

Unbeaten run extends to 18 (minus ‘dead’ games).

  399. I am thinking about QoS because I think she went into labour last night. Any news?

  400. Ololo! I like what is written here!!

  401. Let’s put the fact straight.

The team’s performance was dreadful. We just needed to put up 70% of our game against them in the first leg and we could have won. The midfield is still the problem, no creativity, only back passes and sideways passes. Square passes rarely create goals and that was our problem.

    Now my ratings.

    Almunia

Just like always, not spectacular and not on par with Chech, Reina and Van de Saar. 6.5 for saving one penalty.

    Sagna

Average performance. His crossings were not good and couldn’t take control of the right flank. He lost his usual runs last night. 6

    Clichy

His form has dipped seriously this season and seems to be making a lot of mistakes this season. Nearly gave away a penalty and could be faulted for the goal, leaving the right side of the defence unmarked. 6

    Gallas

I’ll give him 7 as he came back strongly in the second half and during extra time. He’s at fault for the goal allowing a weak pass to run through him and Kolo for the goal.

    Kolo

Like Gallas, he came back strong in the later stages of the game but was also at fault for the goal. 7

    Diaby

He’s showing his capabilities of late. Apart from few misplaced passes, he tried to create goals but had no much support. Diaby and Cesc in midfield will create tons of goals. 7

    Denilson

I’ll give him 6. His preference for square passes does not help the team moving forward. He’s a good tackler but lack skills to release the ball upfront. He’s the main reason we’re lacking supplies from the midfield.

    Eboue

    Very poor. 5

    Bendtner

Still has a lot to improve his first touch and shield the ball. Couldn’t support RVP. 6

    RVP

His ball control and touch escaped him throughout the match. He had no support from Bendtner and the mdfield. 6

    Nasri

Played below form. He’s slipped in the last few games.6

    Theo

Starved of passes when he came on. Again, lack of creativity from midfield. The midfield chooses to pass in squares rather than release the ball for Theo to run for it. 6

    Eduardo

Couldn’t settle and had no clean supplies

The team was just poor but thank God we won.

I think AW should have taken out Bendtner and Eboue after the first half.

We don’t seem to perform well in this away jersey.

Next come Blackburn, a game we have to win.

  402. Howard f*ck off.

  403. Come off it Howard. Roma set out tactically to break up play, stifle Eboue and RvP, blunt our attacking options and did it very well. They played their hearts out. It was a breathless, scrappy match. Typical Italian defensive strength.

Not every game can be a vintage performance by Arsenal, the guys played with will and energy and courage throughout, heads never dropped. Does that count for dreadful.

We knew this would be one tough assignment, Roma are under-rated, it is notoriously difficult to beat them at home in big matches, and they had backs to the wall attitude.

We won. We overcame. The severe test of penalties was won. We held our nerve. That’s a 7 for every player who took a penalty right there.

    You have a problem.

  404. F*ck of Howard, and shove your petty little ratings where the sun doesn’t shine.

  405. Howard,

I think you’re being too generous to Eboue.

    I’d have given him a 3, he’s fricken shite.

Its lucky we can take penalties because if we’d of lost it’d of been because he cant see obvious passes to men clean through on goal.

We may not be so lucky next time

  406. …f*ck off, Howard…

  407. Arseblogger has a perfect post today.

“It may not have been a great performance, but it doesn’t matter. The defending might have been shit for the goal, but it doesn’t matter. We might not have created any chances, but it doesn’t matter. Our unbeaten record might be gone, but it doesn’t matter.”

“What matters is that we’re through. Into the 1/4 finals. That’s all that matters. Analysis. Pffff. Who gives a f*ck? It’s about time we got a break this season and anyone who wants to poke holes in what they saw last night in the wake of the result is too miserable for their own good.”

“You have to celebrate things like that as an Arsenal fan. As a Gooner. As someone that bleeds red and white. Do you think the thousands of Arsenal fans who went to Rome, who did us all proud, who we could all hear as we watched the game, who sang their hearts out for the lads, stood with a Perroni in hand afterwards and said ‘I know we won but you know what? We really didn’t play that well’?”

“Did they f*ck. They celebrated late into the night, they enjoyed the result, and that’s what we should all do. We know how we can do better, of course we do, but there’s a time and a place for that discussion and it’s some other time. Not now.”

  408. Well, that was a night and a half.

Always enjoy reading the night’s comments when we are playing and I am too busy watching to post. Excellent. Just try and relax a bit more. Especially you Queenie. Talk about a game giving you kittens.

I never felt that we would lose. Last year’s ‘Italian Job’, felt much nore nervy to me. Roma pushed hard at the start, but they would, wouldn’t they? We looked a little nervous at the start. Again, perfectly normal.

The stats on Sky showed that we enjoyed 60% possession even while Smudge and Plattipus were doing their best to tell us that we were doomed and cr@p respectively. I thought we would score before the end. Roma were finished but they never gave up and played the game in a good spirit. Well done to them. Definitley not Bolton or even Villa. Footballers.

Only a miserable pr@t like Howard could carp at that win. Who cares Howard, we won? Objectively, a few players did not have their best games or us. That will have been noted by Arsene and the players themselves and will be worked on. These are players who, for the most part are still learning their trade.

No, we went to Rome and came away Victors.

    Well done you Reds.

  409. ….actually I am jealous of Roma….if the result had been the other way round and we had been at home…we would have been booed off the pitch by our own supporters…if you don’t believe me look at the comments sections on some of the blogs this morning….however the travelling support was fantastic as usual…the Roma fans supported their team brilliantly….great atmosphere in the stadium…and they had flags…..their support added two more players to their side….you can subtract two players from our side when we play at home……jealous as hell I am…I think we probably have the worst supporters in Europe now…not just the prem…

  410. Consols : perfect.

And Arseblogger too, every now and again he gets it right.

I walked in to work and even the Gooner next to me was slagging the team off. I am proud of myself for not reacting. (I wanted to punch him, but jobs are hard to come by these days).

    Arsenal, I love you.

  411. A great shame to us all Frank.

  412. “They want it all and they want it now….”

  413. ….trouble is they have it all…now….they just don’t have eyes to see it….or the with to understand it…..

…I read blogs this morning that accused our players of being lazy last night…..in actual fact they ran their guts out…..I despair….I really do despair….

….and someone really does have to take a cntract out on Alan Smith and David Platt…any reference to them as players in the clubs history should be erased….I had never realised that the Arsenal teams of old were carrying such heavy psychological burdens….

  414. with=wit

  415. The funny part is all the nostalgia for last season and the idea that we’ve gone backwards.

It’s starting to look really crazy because we’re at the same stage of the CL as we were last year, we’ve got further in the FA cup and a win on Saturday could take us back into the top four. We’re also about to regain something that we haven’t had since mid-way last season: a relatively fit squad.

  416. …I agree with you…er…OOU..

  417. Iofus

  418. …your pointy finger is still enormous, OOU….

  419. …perhaps you could shove it up Howards arse for us….

  420. What a miserable life some people are living.
I pity them. They are this morning busy dissecting last night’s performance from the lads, rather than enjoying the fact that in the end we got through, and, for all Roma’s chances to win the game, we had more chances to win it and kill the tie off last time around.
Winning it the hard way through penalty shoot-outs, how much that’d have given the lads belief and confidence for the remainder of the season and beyond.
Denilson seems to the scapegoat of the night. Yeah, he wasn’t his usual brillant self last night, but in case some didn’t realise, he was the youngest on the pitch bar Theo and he delivered in the end. I love his guts and determination. So much to look forward from him..Isn’t it just great?

I really pity those miserable t*ssers.

  421. ….and if in fact it is a gun….you could then just pull the trigger…

  422. …you could then move onto Alan Smith and David Platt…..

  423. …to win the game on penalties in that way will bind the team together brilliantly….they will increase in confidence….

  424. OK, is this a silly issue? Am I being pedantic?
I want to know technically speaking is our unbeaten run ended? I hope not.

I say not because wasn’t last night technically speaking, a draw? 7-7.

    And we went through 8-7.

Sure didn’t feel like we lost a match.

  425. It’s one match played over two legs, and we won.

  426. Thanks Pz.

  427. ….Riise was probably the MOTM last night…he man marked RvP really well…Robin began to get the better of him in extra time….they identified him as the real danger man and so for much of the game he had two players on him….one cutting off supply…the other staying close…that should create space for our midfield players…but we are not scoring from midfield at the moment….soon will be though once the confidence increases…and after the penalty shootout..it will already but much higher….

  428. Eboue was shit though wasnt he

  429. Oooh, what a night.

Yes siree, it is good to be a Gooner!

  430. ..nope…

  431. It sure doesn’t feel like a defeat!

  432. …nobody was sh*t…we went through in the most difficult stadium in the world….job done…

  433. We’re still unbeaten, as far as I’m concerned; and anyone who says otherwise can be next in line for Big Al’s big’un.

  434. Vucinic, Totti, Pizzaro and Taddei are wily characters. Very difficult opponents. Their defence may have been weakened, but in attack they had the players to test anyone last night.

  435. MOTM Diaby! I love the use of the word immense, when describing his performance last night. I agree, it was immense. Great game from Denilson, and how much did scoring his spotkick mean to him?!!!! He misplaced about 2 passes, when up against a hugely compact and crowded midfield, filled mainly with Roma players. I thought he did a man’s job, holding it all together, and his work rate was great. As was Sammi’s. Roma made it difficult for us all over the pitch. And didn’t allow us to get into our deadly rhythm. Fair play to them. I thought they did what they had to do to stop us, because they were more scared of us than we were of them.

  436. Almunia- 6 one great save
Sagna- 5 awful. when will he ever put a good cross into the box again
Clichy-5 terrible loss of form-Maybe give Gibbs a couple of games
Toure- 5 Average.Lucky he was playing against the useless Baptista
Gallas-5 At fault with the goal
Nasri -4 Not seen all game
Eboue-3 Can only play against championship sides-awful
Denilson-5 a few good tackles but his passing was terrible
Diaby-4 Ran around to no graeat effect
Bendtner-5 i dont blame Nic i blame Wenger for playing him outwide
RVP-4 Had a shocker.Plus his set pieces were shit

  437. F*ck these player ratings, man. It’s the new craze taking over all the Arsenal blogs. Can this be a player-rating free zone? Pretty please?

  438. Thanks for the feedback, Aneta.

  439. Yeah Arseblog made some sense today. LG obviously didn’t. How freaking thick can one be to understand that Theo has just returned from injury, and it would take him a few games to adjust his game before he can make a start? They make ridiculous claims. So we’re going to have Cesc and possibly Rosicky back from injuries by the start of april. How freaking awesome. The two most creative players in our squad. It’s going to be amazing. Wenger’s going to get a selection headache.

  440. Aneta, stop dissecting everyones performance.

It wasn’t pretty but who cares! we won!!!

If you can’t enjoy this victory you really are a sorry individual.

  441. I hope you have plenty of bullets in your gun, Iofus (ne Big Al).

  442. AW typically under-stated when he said the team ‘will progress’ from this. It is a massive psychological boost in another country, to stare down your opponent, their 60,000 passionate fans, after a drainingly intense match, and score from the spot, and millions are watching on TV.

  443. Interesting style of dissection. Hit the specimen with a hammer, then throw it in the bin.

  444. Guys – I have surveyed the blogs and the usual gang of posters and i must say ACLF is the greatest. Despite the valour of Roma and the difficulty of the battle, the doubters and backbiters dismiss the effort of our boys. Yes they acknowledge that we won but the respect is grudging at best. The most heinous cack is Myles – a true vulture. But this group of posters, with the usual exceptions, have shown them up as fake, plastic fans. Thanks to you Frank for being as resolute as ever. We stand behind our team.
Yes sire, it is good to be a Gooner!

  445. Perhaps you could poke your shotta gunna up David Platta’s fatta bumma.

  446. Then pulla the trigga.

  447. Mamma mia! Shitta everywhere.

  448. A gun and an identity crisis…a dangerous mix if ever there was one.

    New blog.

  449. I have neither btw!

  450. “Interesting style of dissection. Hit the specimen with a hammer, then throw it in the bin.”

    Haha,

It’s as if winning’s not good enough for these guys unless each player score 3 hatricks!

    grow up you spoilt babies.

  451. Stirro

Did i say i didnt enjoy the victory.I did and was celebrating till 1.30 am. But the TRUTH is we were bloody awful. In fact my Arsenal MOTM was That pile of crap we once had at our club,Julio “the beast”(stop laughing)Baptista.People say Wenger is lucky the best bit of luck he had was not paying £14m for that load of shite

  452. Fine Aneta, glad you celebrated!!

I just think it’s counter-productive to pick faults in every single player’s game after a victory.

  453. I read Mr. Myles Palmer ANR for the first time today. Wonderful sense of humour. It sure is funny. He is comedian, right? Something like the Borat of England? Or is that Howard? I get confused.
