Media Awareness, Theo And The Usual Guff

Somewhat later than intended but it was a good weekend in the print pages for Arsenal players and not least the manager. Patrick Barclay in his Sunday Times column praised Wenger:

…remember that Arsenal turned to Wenger when it became apparent that Bruce Rioch could not establish a worthy succession to George Graham, under whom the ruthless achievement of the Herbert Chapman and Bertie Mee eras had been reprised. Wenger combined achievement with generosity of spirit. If football is art, he has demonstrated it over and over again, so that, equally, if anyone has made an unanswerable case for patience, it is he.

The article itself was a prescient reminder to the critics of Wenger that the season is not over. That is not to say that he is infallible; he is a mortal but as he observed recently, he has been in the game for thirty years and may know a thing or two more than those of us looking in from the outside. Barclay hit the nail on the head:

This is where the harlots come in. They — we — have a responsibility. What we usually do in such situations is apply the crocodile-tears technique: “The long-suffering fans of deserve better . . .” Not that they ever do. No football fans deserve anything except admission to the ground and adequate lavatories. Not unless they organise themselves and buy the club, of course, as has been done abroad and is increasingly the fashion at lower levels here.

Large proportions of those who support the bigger Premier League clubs are spoilt brats. In Arsenal’s case, they have been treated by Wenger to the most beautiful football played in this country….since the early 1960s. That is during Arsenal’s frequent peaks under Wenger — but even the perceived trough of now has the team in contention for not only fourth place in the Premier League, but the FA Cup and the Champions League. And still we hear the wails of pain.

Fair play, sir, there is not much more that one can say. Except to chastise, perhaps, when he forgets this standpoint and offers a less than fair critique of Le Boss in the future.

Meanwhile, the media-savvy of two forwards came to the fore; one example good, one that basically makes you put your head in your hands and utter the exasperated, “Dear God!“. Well, OK, some will not but an awful lot will have done so.

Robin van Persie gave a good insight to us all in an interview with Amy Lawrence in The Observer in which he re-iterated that he will be at the club next season but refused to be more specific about his future. The Dutchman had pre-empted any criticism previously by confirming that the money for his contract extension was agreed, it was his personal desire to win trophies that is the decisive factor. This then translated into “I’m Going Nowhere“.

Compare that to the perception of Emmanuel Adebayor. His observations on the summer were a reflection of previous comments he has made. However, he added the usual proviso of not knowing what the future holds. In media-speak, this translates to “I could still quit Gunners“.

The players cannot control the slant that a hack wishes to put on a “story” yet they can dictate the perception. Restlessness is never forgotten therefore it seems sensible that having decided to stay, the emphasis that they put onto utterances for public consumption should be styled in that direction. If not, there can little sympathy when their words are twisted. Obviously, that does not negate the responsibility that we have to read the quotes rather than the comment around them yet life is not that simple. Sensationalist interpretation is king. Maybe that king ought to be dead?

Adebayor’s position is interesting. He has been criticised for not reaching the high levels that he set last season. In fairness to the player, he has been more disrupted by injury than previously and has been affected in his supply at least, through the injuries of others. However, on current form, he is not the lead striker at the club. In Wenger’s mind, he might well be but the return of Eduardo, I think, puts more pressure on the Togolese and it will be interesting to see how he reacts. I hope that he returns to the form of yesteryear, putting the summer behind him for whilst I would be hesitant to agree with his own assessment of himself (at the moment), I would suggest that an in-form Adebayor is one of the leading strikers in Europe.

Roma are looming large in the foreground this week with the likelihood being that Eduardo and Theo will be in the squad. The latter praised the medical staff for his recovery and suggested that he is looking forward to a bit of rough and tumble in the match. A typical boy really; likes to go out and run around in the mud.

  2. Frank's biggest fan

    Any predictions for tonight, Yogi?

Bayern are definite to go through. Scousers, Russians, and Greeks looking okay to reach Q/F. I’d rather have Real and Juve, but it looks unlikely. But you never know.

  3. Great article, its good to see players coming back and it is only now being mentioned in the media and on SSN that this has been the case.

I would like to see the returning players play all fixtures once they are at full fitness, as they should be fresh and hungry.

RVP, Denilson, Nasri, Clichy and Sagna need and deserve to rest as often as possible. I believe we have opportunities to rest these players over the coming weeks, not all at once of course.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  4. Im looking forward to the game today, finally got the direct TV up and running, living on a yacht in the caribbean is hard some times, i havent watched a Arsenal match since we were beaten at home bye Hull,,, ahhhhh .
I think Eduardo deserves a start today, alongside van Persie, as does Eboue. I think Walcot is still to fresh from his layoff for a start.
But thats just my opinion, im sure some one will shoot me down for it.
    Go Gunners!!

  5. I know everyone is quite keen on the stats on this site so lets mull over a few relating to the Champions league. Who is the best tackling midfielder in the CL this season? Also who is the number one for assist attempts this season? You may be pleased to know that the answer is an Arsenal player. Is it Denilson? Fabregas? Diaby?. No, none of these. The answer is Andrei Arshavin! 22 successful tackles in only 5 games (Zenit came third in their group behind Juventus and Real Madrid). And more than 20 assist attempts in a losing team is seriously impressive. Total tackles Mascherano and Denilson lead (but played 1 game more, so adjusting for that, Arshavin is tops). You can see why AW was so keen on Arshavin, this was only his first CL campaign and to have the best tackling and assist attempts in the group they were in is amazing. He will suit the Arsenal pressing and creative game to a T.
Also a quick word re Denilson in the CL. He’s played every minute including the dead Porto game and is only second to Mascherano in tackles, is 2nd in passing and pass accuracy and is seriously better than Gilberto in all categories, not to mention Senna, Veloso and all the other usual suspects. Again he’s only just turned 21 so well done. I don’t think its fair to say he may be a good player some day, he is an excellent player now.

  6. FBF

Can’t see Liverpool or Chelsea not progressing. If the Bayern tie were a horse, it would have already been put down whilst I have a feeling that Villarreal will win tonight by the odd goal in three.

Tribal’s headline, Arsenal’s Djourou says Bendtner LACKS self-confidence

    (LACKS in caps)

But actually Djourou had said, “He needs to believe in himself a little bit more but he is starting to do that now and he knows he has the quality. I think he’s going to be unstoppable when he realises how much talent he has.”

Tribal, S*n and other media f*rce.

  8. I’m afraid I disagree that “all fans deserve is admission and adequate lavatories”. We also deserve to see players on the pitch give 100% commitment. Regretably that hasn’t been the case in some of our games this season by certain players.

  9. Frank's biggest fan

Villareal could go through, but Pana don’t normally concede at home. I fancy Pana to go through on away goals rule. Ten Cate will get his tactics right once again, he knows/reads Spanish teams by heart.

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/toure-fit-to-start-as-arsenal-fly-to-rome

Good news. Toure fit to start.

I reckon it will be fresh players in Toure, Nasri, Denilson, Clichy, RVP, and Bendtner to be back in the starting-11. That said, Song, Eboue, Vela, Theo and Dudu in contention for starting place too.

Silvestere is fit, but not traveling to Rome.

Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas, and Rosicky to return by end of March.

Terrific news for final 6 weeks. We have lot of options, and a welcome headache for Arsene to pick the substitutes, let alone the first team. :P

  11. gunnerjones:

you may be dissapointed, the game is tommorow.

  12. Another thanks to all that voted in the Football Fanzine 2009 Best Blog as ACLF made the shortlist that is to be judged by a panel.

    http://www.footballfanzineawards.com/shortlist-blog.php

    YW

  13. Yogi … ACLF is the best I have seen. Well done.

Not just good football talk, interesting bloggers, and Arsenal, but good journalism. Take a bow.

  14. Frank's biggest fan

Absolute travesty ACLF will have to be evaluated against wind-up merchants of TheRepublikOfMancunia. It’s a no-brainer. Hope ACLF wins it.

  15. wandarah ,, thank you, i realized that just after i posted, was hoping no one would notice,,, now i have to wait till tomorrow to get my long awaited fix.
JBH ,,, well said on Denilson , just turned 21, first full season in the team and he is bye far our best and most consistent mid field player,,, some people are just idiots and no amount of stats or argument can cure an idiot, they will all-ways be idiots, its some thing they are born with. Imagine what an immense player he could be in 2 years time,,, he deserves way more credit than he gets…

  16. jbh

Is Denilson’s passing good to you? I have seen him pass mostly sideways and backwards. No creativity; he and Song being the main reason we’ve lost our flair football of late. Replace him with Diaby and the free flow football returns.

  17. Agree with fans not deserving just because of the money paid at the turn-styles. If that wasnt the case then the only supporters who genuinly had a case to complain would be those in the bottom half of the table. Dont they deserve wonderfull football, dont they deserve to win everything in style, no of course they dont. football fans dont make these decisions, the club makes them for us. so make that choice of who you support one from the heart and not because of past sucess otherwise you will most definetly get what you deserve. with the away goal rule i am really glad that we play our first match at home. with a team with our attacking options . not to conceed at home puts it on a plate. come on you reds

  18. Howard

Simply because a player passes sideways or backwards is not a reason to criticise their distribution. Not every pass can be a 40 yard defence splitter. Indeed, the world class players rarely play them, using the ball more wisely to retain possession and allow others to express themselves as readily as they themselves do.

    YW

  19. H,

I have to say I haven’t noticed a dearth of exciting football recently. Since our injury problems eased, there have been 3 high scoring games interspersed with freak 0-0 draws, which can be put down to poor finishing and movement up front. Off-days: they do happen.

And while we’re at it, I don’t remember Gilberto having much flair, pace or or the most extravagant passing range. He was/is still considered an excellent central midfielder.

    Why?

He gets his positioning right, reads the game well and does the simple stuff impeccably. Much like someone who plays for us now….ah yes, Denilson!

  20. Alex Ice Cream

I hope Ade didn’t say that stuff about being a great player. If he did then he is arrogant, complacent and deluded – in fact the Ade that we know this season.

He is an asset if he sorts out his attitude but I still have a feeling that last year Cesc and Hleb made him look better than he actually is.

  21. OneOfUs

What you missed in reference to Gilberto was that he played with Viera/Pires/Edu/Cesc, so he was complemented by flair and creative passing.

Denilson/Cesc hasn’t been a success because he tries to play like Cesc minus the flair. Denilson also don’t play Gilberto because of his love to move forward even though he lacks creativity, recovery pace and shooting ability. In effect, his pairing with Cesc has proved to be non-productive. Denilson’s pairing with Song also creates immobility in midfield because both of them are slow and don’t have the creative skills.

Denilson’s best pairing is with Diaby as Diaby is a good complement. He can excel playing with Cesc and if he restricts himself playing DM. Unfortunately, anytime he plays wth Cesc he tries to copy Cesc and forces Cesc to stay back and carry loads of defensive duties.

Its obvious that Cesc/Denilson doesn’t work. Cesc will be better off playing with Diaby if Diaby restricts to more deeper position allowing Cesc to support the forwards.

    Diaby is the better prospect in that position because;

    he has physical presence
he’s more comfortable with the ball than Denilson
    he has better touch
    his recovery pace is better

Diaby however, will need to improve his tackling, learn to release the ball quicker.

Diaby/Cesc is the solution to our midfield problems.

  22. Do you know why Ade is lacking goals this season? Lack of creativity from the middle. Ade needs 6 chances to score 1 so any chances below that number makes him impossible to score.

He was scoring goals last season because of Cesc and Hleb with Flamini as the anchor.

This season has been difficult for Ade because Cesc is forced to defend playing with Denilson. Denilson lacks creativity as he plays safe by passing to the next player near him or to defenders.

  23. Here we go again with this Denilson discussion, what more can really be said that hasnt already? He is playing well and thats all you can ask of him, lets make Wenger make the team selections, He knows best.

Looking Forward to a great win tomorrow. I have a feeling that with players coming back from Injury we are going to see some even better football, the competition for places will be great for Arsenal!

    God Bless!!

  24. Howard will need more work on his grammar, punctuation and vocabularly to be a more complete blogger.

    He will need to:

    – Add more creativity to his blogging, by using words such as ‘tosser’

    - Be capable of humour, which will win friends and influence people

    - Watch out for those apostrophes, which, when missing, are sure signs of lack of attention to detail

    - Vary his blogging. Most of Howard’s posts centre around one Arsenal player. This obsessive style of blogging is not healthy.

    - Most of all, be accepting of criticism. Howard shows no awareness of others on the blog.

  25. Excellent analysis Muppet, especially this point.

“Vary his blogging. Most of Howard’s posts centre around one Arsenal player. This obsessive style of blogging is not healthy.”

This is tiring why beat up on one player all the time? give the guy a rest, geez.

They say in Jamaica that when your ears have a ringing in them (not a phone) that someone is talking about you, well Denilson’s ears must be ringing all day, everyday!

  26. jbh @ 11.45

Great post. Especially the line “I don’t think its fair to say he (denilson) may be a good player some day, he is an excellent player now.”

can I ask the source of your stats please. I want to be able to quote them liberally!

  27. H
Most things you say are utter nonsense. For example sideways passing, well hello, that is what most in that position do. Just watch any other team. If you are still unsure, of his skills look at a heatmap of his passing for any game and you will see a very wide variety of forward, back, etc passes. And all over the pitch because he covers the full pitch (more than any other Arsenal player).
But the biggest piece of nonsense is the Cesc can’t play with Denilson because he has to defend more. Well Cesc prior to is injury and compared to last seasons figures had: about the same number of tackles, passes, shots and assist attempts per game. The one figure that he was well down on was goals scored. So the bottom line is that his style of play was the same with Flamini and Denilson, but you cannot blame Denilson for Cesc’s lack of accuracy in shooting.
If Denilson was the fault then Cesc would have been putting in more tackles, intercepts and fewer assist attempts (AND HE WAS NOT).

  28. Howard would need to do an attitude transplant, and actually learn something about football. He says he’s an ex-player but I’m shocked at how strongly he holds on to his worse ideas.

  29. If he’s an ex footballer than i’m Hulk Hogan.

    Whattchya goona do?!!

  30. QoS

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2510186/Football-Rankings-player-statistics-and-team-details.html

    Also try the Guardian Chalkboard
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/create

and Yahoo fantasysports – you may need to register a team.
Then look at individual player details. These have for example the intercept numbers.

The most important thing for stats is to review based on the position the player plays (compare apples to apples) then you see the true worth of a player. The main reason for problems this year is poor quality finishing (many shots, few goals), and poor defending earlier in the season.

  31. I thought that was the Incredible Hulk at first glance QoS, more of a stretch!

  32. “You would’nt like me when I’m angry”

  33. Muppet

Well, I accept your criticism in good faith but I can’t write the same way because I belong to the old school.

On Denilson, I’m just trying to point out that he’s not great, just an average midfielder learning his trade. Again, watching him, he’s not the solution to our midfield problems as we’re being made to believe. In fact, he’s part of the problem rather than the solution.

I’ve already made my points extensively on that, comparing his abilities and failings to Cesc and Diaby

    jbh

Well, I’m not dwelling on statistics, I’m judging on real games, actions on the field of play.

We’re looking good with Diaby playing; we’re still in it, CL, FA and also predicting 3rd even 2nd in the league because our injury woes are getting behind us.

Roma is the next victim. Viva Arsenal

  34. ‘Roma is the next victim. Viva Arsenal’

Thats what I’m talking about Howard! Big ups!

  35. Howard,

    lol… a response.

    Well… I rate Diaby… he’s a tremendous player. I just hope he stays fit.

I think the issue of Denilson lies not so much with Denilson, but is compounded by having our key creative players out. You look to Denilson to fill that creative void, but that is not what he is about. Believe me, there will be times when you will cry out for a steady midfield holding player, or just a steady player who can be trusted.

Looking at his stats (Denilson), it’s hard to believe that he can’t be that. Time is on Denilson’s side also, so he may be able to play a more creative game with more confidence and start adding more assists and goals.

  36. I am not even sure If Denilson is not creative, I think it is more about what he is being asked to do, my opinion at least!

  37. I think 16, 17 games unbeaten speaks for itself as far as midfield is concerned, and people should give it a rest. They’ve done a job, it’s been effective. Chances have been created consistently, but not taken consistently – if they had been we would be 4th or 3rd already.

The thing is … the thing is … it’s the team combination, not the individual players.

Denilson-bashers miss the monumental point. Denilson and Song ARE limited with 3 amazing flair midfield players out (Cesc, Theo, Rosicky) plus Diaby for long spells and attacking options also out for periods. How could it be otherwise? Even Cesc would be limited, as RvP has been.

Now, as soon as players started returning + Arsh came, Denilson and Song started to look very, very good. It’s the combination that works, the team. Those two are already fantastic footballers.

  38. Y.W. said “Adebayor’s position is interesting. He has been criticised for not reaching the high levels that he set last season. In fairness to the player, he has been more disrupted by injury than previously and has been affected in his supply at least, through the injuries of others. However, on current form, he is not the lead striker at the club.”
Fair and balanced comment, not like that tosser Gunnerblog and his fellow travelers, who rely on the Sun and other odious trash as their source of misinformation. Any football fan worth his salt knows a goal-scorer never stops being a goal-scorer, until their legs give out. It is instinctual, not something you learn.
I have faith that Ade will be back and better.

  39. Its quite that simple ZimPaul, “TEAM”.

  40. rather quiet today

  41. C’MON GUNNERS !!!
    Roma here we come.
    Can’t wait.

  42. Paul N

Are you not concerned about Ade’s will he, won’t he character as summer approaches? Is Ade worth 80k a week per Arsenal standards? Is Ade reliable enough to retain him? Does his cockiness fit into Arsenal’s ethics?

  43. Come on then QoS, don’t keep us in suspense. Are you Hulk Hogan?

  44. 16 games unbeaten would look a lot better if we won the next 5 games and qualify for the 1/4 finals and 1/2 finals of the FA Cup & CL.

Then we’d actually be one of the best placed teams.

  45. Remember 2006? Nobody gave us a chance in the CL then, because we were fighting with Spurs to get 4th place. We had many ‘green’ players, Senderos, Eboue, Flamini and Cesc all playing their first full season. Eboue, Senderos and Flamini thanks to injuries to Lauren (where is he now?), Sol and Cole respectively however, we managed to get to the finals. I still believe that if we had played Flamini instead of Cashley, we could’ve won the CL.

Now 2009, suddenly we’re struggling to get 4th but doing well in the cups.

We will get to the finals of both the FA and the CL and win both. Amen.

  46. Alex Ice Cream

    Howard,

    I am concerned about it.

If Diarra was sold as he had a bad attitude and was disruptive when all he wanted to do was play then what about Ade?

With Ade you get all the worst excesses of Thierry Henry with 10% of the ability (I am being kind here). People said that Henry’s attiutde was a problem so why isn’t Ade’s?

People who defend Ade can’t have it both ways. He is taking us for mugs when as you say he is not even good enough to play for us based on this season.

I would play Eddy and RvP with Bendtner as sub. I would even prefer Vela.

  47. I can’t believe you guys fell in the Howie trap again?

    I huge setback…

  48. And here goes AIC to follow, you guys thrive on media sh*t.

  49. Any ideas for tomorrow ?

    Starting XI:

    Almunia

    Sagna
    Gallas
    Toure
    Clichy

    Walcott
    Diaby
    Nasri
    Denilson
    Eduardo

    Van Persie

    Subs:

    Fabianski
    Djourou
    Gibbs
    Eboue
    Ramsey
    Bendtner
    Vela

  50. Diarra was sold because he threw a strop once it became apparent he’d have to fight for a place in the team. He even refused to play in an FA cup side. Not the kind of guy you’d want around.

I thought we’d established that what Adebayor said, assuming he even said it, wasn’t really that bad at all.

Nothing can happen until post-season anyway. Let’s concentrate on the great things that can happen between now and then.

  51. Walcott’s comments on Arsenal.com suggest he isn’t ready to start yet.

  52. Or what G4E said. I’m ashamed of myself as well – I just can’t resist the opportunity to defend Denilson and Song.

  53. You’re a good fellow, Big Al. It’s a shame you’ve forgotten your identity.

  54. Good line-up muppet.

Guessing the team selection is a becoming a real headache now we have a wealth of attacking options available.

Whoever starts i’m 100% sure we’ll see off roma tomorrow!!

  55. Missed out Song I guess. Definite Sub, if not starter.

  56. Perhaps Song, Denilson and Diaby could all start?

Then add Nasri, RvP, Bendtner to that…maybe?

I’m starting to go for kind of lineup…but Eboue or Dudu could be in there.

    Argh! I don’t know. It’s anyone’s guess.

  57. I can understand Big Al, but some people think they’re right no matter what scientific, statistic or material proof you have…. they think they’re right, and their argument is, well, there is no argument except the sake of argument.

Some people will never admit they were wrong, or may be there is a slight, tiny, teeny bit chance they may be wrong.

I for one didn’t like Gallas that much, even before wearing the Arsenal shirt. But, after seeing him hug Eboue the other day and he really seemed sincere, like big brother who was happy for his younger brother lifting a huge weight off his young shoulders….I thought maybe I have to rethink my view of him, maybe there is more to him than what I hear and read in the news.

You keep judging player’s personalities based on third party quotes, you blame a 19 year old for a whole squad’s failure to mount a real league challenge…..what kind of people are you?

Denilson is the problem why we couldn’t mount a challenge for the title this year? Are you serious? What happened to the other 10 players playing along him? Are they just there to make up the numbers?

If you have any intelligence, you will realize that what you say is absolute bullsh*t. No one player no matter how big he is can mount a title challenge by himself, not even Thierry Henry, he needed 10 more players on the field to produce the goals he produced.

Enough with your stupid analysis…..we’re getting sick of it.

  58. ….spent the day on the road from Rimini to Rome…the Flaminian Way….I kid you not…seemed appropriate….I always knew that Italians like chidren…but it seems that they have no problem with elephants at all…..we were stopped by a squad of police cars a few hours ago….our whole caravan of elephants came to a sudden stop…each one bumping into the next…several supporters had to be taken to hospital…one had to be treated on the spot….his head went up an elephants arse….just damaged his ears a bit…there we were a rather untidy line of elephants and riders….red and white flags flapping and snapping in the breeze…policeman he says…..’you can’t a take a those into a Roma’….’well we were hoping to camp in a field just outside of Rome, leave the elephants there’, said I…..’not a da elephants, I mean a da flags’ said he….’da elephants are a da fine…no problem with a da elephants…it is a just a da flagsa’….it seems there is an ancient Roman law that people bearing the flags of other clubs can be cast from the walls of the city…..how long have the they been playing f*cking football, ffs….but elephants…elephants are fine…..

  59. Before you all get the wrong idea about me being critical of players, i will, and have defended Adebayor to the hilt this season.

I can think of only one striker in the division who, on his day, can offer the same all round game as Adebayor, and that is Drogba.

And most pundits thought he was pretty poor until his late 20′s.

Adebayor is a crucial member of our strike force, and will come good again.

One last thing on the Denilson debate, i must admit that i have always thought he looks better with Cesc or Diaby next to him, so maybe it is too much to expect the team to click at its most creative best with both him and Song playing together.

My personal preference would be Cesc and Diaby when everyone is fit.

I think Diaby has all the attributes to be a great player – pace, power and skill, now all we need is for him to stay fit!

In the last couple of games, he has also shown a more mature balance to his game also, he seems stronger defensively than in the past.

  60. Imagine if Hannibal had managed to get to Rome, and then had to turn back because elephants weren’t allowed in the city.

  61. …..or…..he was turned back because he had flags….

  62. Alex Ice Cream

    G4E,

I’ll respond to whoever I want whenever I want. You also say that people just trot out media reports. Yes some do but surely this does not apply to me. I make my own judgments right or wrong based on what I see. I don’t have Sky and don’t read the papers. Ok noone is 100% immune to this but if you are implying that criticism of Ade is fuelled by the media you are wrong – at least in my case.

The evidence is in front of you if you choose to see it and even AW said that Ade was not as good as last year and it is very rare that he does this.

I said that Vieira wasn’t the same after the Madrid stuff in 2001 and by 2004-5 I and others could see that he was no longer interested. I was unsurprised when he was sold.

I agree that we are stuck with him until the summer so I won’t go on about this.

  63. Where did Pboy go? Is he ok?

  64. Alex Ice Cream

    Matt,

I agree on the condition that he can actually be bothered and be focused. Unfortunately for most of the season this has not been the case.

  65. I am not sure about that Alex.

There have definately been other factors with Ade this season – a number of irritating little injuries, and without a doubt he has not enjoyed the service that he received last year. (and there is no Derby in the league for that confidence boosting game). ;-)

  66. ….we made red & white vests for the little elephants out of the flags…..some of them have supporters clubs written on them…very sweet…’grantham gooners’…..’portsmouth gooners’…that sort of thing…the weirdest one…. ‘tottenham gooners’….love that one….oh and one has MUPPET written on it….and believe it or not…one little elephant is walking into Rome as we speak with ‘f*ck off Howard’ on his vest……

  67. Nice…so Vieira was not the same since 2001, but then went on to win the 2002 double, then 2004 Invincibles, and the 2005 FA Cup?

Oh ok, I shouldn’t worry about Ade then….if you will be repeating your wrong analysis of 2001….

  68. isn’t it great that for the first in the whole season we have no idea what team Arsene will start….I mean, Bendy is fit and rested, Eduardo and Walcot are raring to go and Eboue is in contention to start, not to mention the three midfield musketeers…..oh well, not a bad problem to have.

  69. Can you imagine trying to pick the startin XI when we have Cesc, Ade, The Arsh & Rosicky available too!

    Awesome.

  70. Yep, Ade has been off form this year. Not himself. Seemed a bit lethargic at times. Best guess, he’d been carrying a strain for a bit and eventally tore the hamstring.

Maybe he starting reading Le Grove or whatever it’s called. It might be true that last season (or reading LG) messed with his head. The season before he was on the bench, didn’t look that great, but his attitude was so fantastic.

Hell, I dunno, really I have zero idea. I only wish he would be clear on commitment to the Arsenal, like Clichy, RvP, Denilson, Kolo, Gallas etc …

He is a good player, and as defenders keep saying, a bastard to defend against with those legs and he’s fast too.

Probably he’ll prove us all wrong, get his form back, score winning goals, but no doubt he has competition – Ed, Bendtner, Theo, RvP (if he ends up in a central striker role), Simpson soon.

I am biased because he is African and has an amazing rags to riches story. I want him to succeed at Arsenal.

  71. I don’t think Arsène is willing to start Eduardo twice in a row at the moment. And Theo is not 100% match fit yet so will probably make the bench. The most likely team to me is: Almunia; Sagna, Kolo, Gallas, Gael; Eboué, Denilson, Diaby, Nasri; Van Persie, Bendtner. But maybe Arsène surprises us.

  72. Thing is G4E that you have forgotten the underlying principle of those who blame individual players for our’poor’ season. It is all Arsene’s fault for not replacing Flamini or Hleb or Gilberto or even Henry.

You see, we just have not spent as much money as Chelsea or Liverpool or Manu therefor we have no ambition and Arsene has lost the plot.

If you get past that then it’s the Board. they are greedy and money grabbing.

    God Bless Arsenal.

Pb is having a few days off. He has gone nowhere.

  73. I am concerned if any players is not committed to the cause but I have no reason to believe that is the case with any of our players, at least as far as this season is concerned.

I hope Ade come’s back well and re-claims his place as one of the elite strikers in football.

  74. Not sure what Flamini, Hleb or Gilberto would have done for this team this season?
We had the three players in the past three years and we didn’t win anything with them in the team?

  75. I am not sure what he would of offered on the pitch, but Gilberto would of been great to have around the dressing room and team in general.

    A true gentleman and professional.

If there had been any arrogance or squabbling in the changing room, one look or a quiet word from someone who has been there and done it can go far.

  76. “…and in 11 days , all the doubters will again become “believers “ and AW their God!”

  77. Well, it doesn’t matter does it G4E. It’s all in the past. There are some who just use their leaving as an excuse to criticise Arsene. AIC has got that point.

As we always will, and all Arsenal fans should, we will back the players on the pitch and the club and manager off it.

Our Club. Our Team Our Arsenal. Our Love.

To that end, I have penned a little verse. No, No don’t leave!

    ‘You know the moment,
    colours tumbling down the terrace,
electricity like a charge in the air.
    That’s out love.’

  78. Of course, for ‘out’ read ‘our’. Doh!

  79. What does your wife think of your “out love,” Consolsbob?

  80. You beat me to it.

  81. Sounds good to me CBob… :)

  82. I like it!

  83. Well, I had to do something having left the elephant driving to Frank.

  84. Queen of Suburbia

I have no idea what you are all talking about.

  85. We are talking about how beautiful your baby will be QoS

  86. On Ade’s form:

Ade was trying very hard to win over the fans – he even stopped doing that stupid dance celebration and started saluting the fans after scoring!
    Then the Wigan match……
I was amazed by how good Ade’s first touches and the link-up plays between Ade-Song-Eboue were in that match. Then the booing incident happend and Ade seemed quite upset and rattled, trying to comfort Eboue, his best friend. And I think Ade’s form went downhill since then – considering that one of the most important ingredients for strikers is confidence, it makes sense. Or not?

Okay, I think I watched too much of Friends.

  87. You old smoothie G4E.

You old softie TC. (yeah, right)

  88. Real Mardrid?!?

  89. Terrible play from Madrid this evening. I hope Inter are better tomorrow.

  90. …are rubbish, aren’t they! It’s a shame for them because Huntelaar’s actually in form but in ineligible I think. They badly need a focal point up front.

    Oh a penalty!

  91. Terrible refereeing as well!

  92. Game over! This could get embarrassing for them.

  93. Another gift!

  94. That linesman needs an anatomy lesson.

  95. An eye exam?

  96. RM made a terrible mistake – they should’ve taken Huntelaar, not the dolphin head!!

  97. Yeah, you can’t win anything with Diarra in midfield.

  98. Diarra has been their best player recently, it pains me to say…but relying on Raul up front these days is just asking for trouble.

  99. Not today, Big Al.

  100. twotouchmiracle

    even buffon makes mistakes

  101. Bayern Munich 4-1 Sporting (agg 9-1)
Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid (agg 3-0)

Er…what is Veloso, the greatest DM, doing?
Er…what is Diarra, the greatest DM, doing?

  102. TC do you like Friends? That’s my favorite show :)

  103. I’m sorry to hear that, G4E.

  104. Am here G4E – couldn’t stay away.. and thanks, bro’s for keeping it mellow.
Am not bothered about ‘pool.. Real Madrid (from what have read so far) are simply c@p. Same re: Chel$ki. If Billy and the back four can keep the Drog quiet, and Lumpy doesn’t get time on the ball.. no worries.
More concerned about, of all teams, Hull, in the FA. Buses etc.

  105. Pz…straight on,and am laughing… classic.

  106. Welcome back, Ponyboy. You were just trying to scare me by saying you’d be away for a week.

  107. You like Friends? You’re one of very few men then. My favorites are SATC and the simpsons!!!

  108. The referee at Liverpool has been absolutely shocking. The 1st goal, arguably, was a pull back by Torres and a foul could easily have been called. The 2nd, handball off the shoulder ??

Looks like Father Xmas has come to Anfield early again this year.

  109. As he does every year.

And they must leave out plenty of mince pies, because he never seems to leave.

  110. As usual

  111. I thought you left cookies and milk out for Santa, at least in the US you do, I think?

  112. Muppet,
Father Xmas resides in Anfield. If only they had been chucked out of the qualifying round by Liege!!

  113. Well… this site is just as damnably addictive when you’ve spent most of the day in bed, thinking…
SATC, TC ? Never got it.. G4E, you smooching your way into our Ladies’ Team, you crafty old bugger ? :-)

  114. Poliziano/TC – yes..lol

Sherry and mince pies isn’t it ? Carrots for the reindeer.

  115. Maybe we should leave Tough Cookie out for Santa ?
And (sorry QoS)..a little real milk ?

  116. I love Friends…I watch ar least an episode a day :) and I still laugh…I used to watch the Simpsons too

  117. 3-0 – how embarassing for Madrid. Can’t see Ramos surviving.

  118. Hey Pboy….Me? I didn’t do anyting?

  119. Real Madrid?!?!

The Spanish League may be a bit hyped.

  120. G4E,
according to my brother, the only reason men watch Friends is Rachel. Is it true?

Ponyboy – me for santa? you naughty boy!

  121. I like Fraser, King of Queens and everybody loves Raymond, Bernie Mac Show is funny too!

I Watch some episodes of “Only Fools and Horses” on youtube – now thats the best!

Clips of the Real McCoy – Brilliant!

  122. No, it’s not true. She’s a good reason not to watch it.

  123. Is Rachel the one with the long brown hair ?
Ever seen the film “Bad Santa” with Billy Bob Thornton ? Laugh out loud stuff.. not for the pious.

  124. Rachel is absolutely not the only reason :) I just liked how they were close together because I had the same kind of friends growing up.

I like Phoebe & Moinca too….I like them all

  125. I’m sorry, but someone must be getting paid – how else is such good fortune always falling upon that team?

  126. someone IS getting paid!

  127. Speaking of Monica, I feel like some cookies now!
(But have to eat them over the sink..) :)

  128. G4E… you know how to speak to the ladies..
Soon it will be which bikini-wax to use. Good for you!

Only fools… – it was funny the 1st time, Paul, but they repeat it constantly here.

  129. Little wonder. You are a cookie.

  130. That’s right TC….no crummies :)

  131. You always have to take the conversation up one notch…don’t you Pboy? :) What’s Friends has to do with Bikini-Wax?

  132. Pb, I wish I had a that problem.

Does Grange Hill still come on TV?

  133. Is Chelsea about to get dropped?

  134. Juve down to 10 men.

  135. It’s a natural progression, G4E – but good question; the fact is, am not a very logical kind of man.
    Juve, PLEASE score!!!

  136. Oh SHIIIT !!!

  137. Another for Liverpool. What an annoying night!!! But at least we get a chance for revenge at some point.

  138. Hope so, Big Al (One of us). ‘pool really humiliated them.. still a bit confused that the managers don’t ‘read’ the EPL..the speed etc.
Was atleast hoping Juve would win.. didn’t watch, but from the radio, sounded like they just didn’t have any answers..

    Anyway, tomorrow is what matters!!

  139. I don’t care what Liverpool and Chelsea do. I’m interested in tomorrow’s matches. Liverpool got plenty of luck, but they were much the better side, at least in the first half. I didn’t watch the second.

  140. Juve were a man down also Pb, but they were decent.

  141. I watched some of the second half of the Chelsea-Juve game. Juve looked okay – a lot better than Real Madrid. I don’t know what their red card (second yellow) was for. It seemed harsh.

  142. Sporting Lisbon have been annihilated. 12-1 on aggregate.

  143. Veloso anyone?

  144. Exactly ToughCookie – sporting will be lucky if Bolton come back in for him now!

  145. I’ve just read he was playing at left-back. Is that true?

  146. I would like us to face liverpool again in the CL but first we must take care of business in Rome.
Fact: Liverpool were extremely lucky against Arsenal last year, how often do you get denied a clear penalty and a dubious one awarded against you when you are six minutes from going through? Guess only when playing the. Is it also a fact that they get some of the most dubious penalties in Europe?

    1. Toure vs Babel
    2. Gerard vs Atletico
    3. Heinze vs Kuyt or whoever

I mean three debatable penalties in success Cl campaigns is simply not right and some st*pid burgers called Platini and Blatter keep banging on about some st*pid rules about nationalities.

That said, Liverpool deserved to through at Real’s expense who by the way are an embarrassment to the Spanish football.

  147. Yeah, PB. Real Madrid were really naive (arrogant?) coming into tonight. The worst thing is it all somehow paints Benitez as a tactical genius. Perhaps he is when you put him up against Juande Ramos!

  148. dont mind the misspelled words…

  149. Yep, just checked – he is obviously versatile, as well as extremely talented. Somebody we need ;)

  150. Playing at left back, he probably did as much in midfield as Diarra did tonight. I didn’t see him make a single tackle, or even an attempt at a tackle, in the first half.

  151. Fact: which team do Real compare to in the EPL, certainly not one of the top ten. completely outplayed including at their own backyard! how freaking embarrassing for one of the top team in Europe? then again you could always say Juve were pants when we killed them off 5-1 at their own home. But they could argue that they were playing a team that had Henry DB PV, Bobby Fl and others. surely Real cant say that against Pool.

FACT: I hate liverpool with every bit of a molecule in me!! Even more than the Mancs and the Chavs!

  152. Diarra also has a massive backside. He might have a dolphin’s head, but he certainly doesn’t have it’s tail.

  153. SpaceGunner –
mis-spelled ? Oh, time to go to pedant’s corner..
You can take the teacher out of the man… but not the pedant!

Well, an all England CL yet again..

  154. I surely hate Manu whith my whole heart, but Liverpool is just a disgust. They somehow do not even look worth beng hated. Chelsey should be be just ignored like an unpleasant occurence which will go away.

  155. Hahaha…dolphinhead – hadn’t noticed; naturally one looks at his head.. bigger than Kolo, Pz ?

  156. Oh Pb, there I go again.. proof reading is not my thing…that and the fact that i hate liverpool keeps blurring my vision…

  157. At least the Mancs play some great football that can be admired, even though they are full of Ratheaded pricks who seems to think they own the world, do they?

I agree the Chavs are just some annoying next door neighbors.

Liverpool, i sincerely dont know how to classify them. they have no class, not really a lot of money and keep pointing at some obscure victory that happened when many of them had not even been born. Plus there former ratheads turned commentators are full of sh*it and filth!

  158. @PZ –
Sick people shouldn’t laugh… please stop it, just for a day or two….

    @Space -
    Ratheads ??? That’s nasty!! Bin-dippers, ok.. scum..fair enough.. but ratheads ??
This is why am getting too into ACLF; too many funny people..

  159. Pb, i agree this blog is really funny…

i just cant seem to find appropriate words to describe Liverpool. what are they? Liver+pool, Pool Liver or maybe a Pool full of Liver or are they a Liver full of Pool. Heck NO! i need stronger words to describe them! for now, i will do with Ratheads!!

  160. It may all be set up nicely for us to exact revenge on the Chel$ks in the FA, and the Phools in the CL….who knows? We just have to win tomorrow first.

  161. Yes, tomorrow first, the mission must continue!

  162. Alex Ice Cream

    G4E,

Yes that’s right. Well done, you managed to understand my post.

Vieira was not the same after 2001 which was his best season.

He sulked through 2002 when we won the double and was poor throughout a notable excpetion being Manu at Highbury. Parlour held the midfield together in 2002.The game where we lost 4-2 v Charlon Vieira was simply awful.

2003 and 2004 he was ok but no more by his standards. By 2005 the game was up. He used to wander about the pitch disinterested. How do I know? I saw it with my own eyes.

AW saw that he was past his best and got rid. They even tried to sell him to Real in 2004 after the Invincible season, agreed a fee but Vieira didn’t leave as he wasn’t offered Galactico wages.

  163. Alex Ice Cream

    Space,

I haven’t seen much great football from the Mancs this season. They won a lot of games 1-0 or by the odd goal in strong defensive displays. They play some football but nothing like they or we used to.

  164. Alex Ice Cream

    Space,

    How about Drivelpoo?

They are a different team in Europe though. They hurt Madrid tonight.

  165. Liverpool were energetic, but Madrid were poor, committed countless defensive blunders, and hardly made a pass that reached its intended target.

  166. Alex Ice Cream

Madrid were horrible. If not for Casillas- by far the world’s best goalkeeper- it would have been a few more.

Pepe cost £20m. Can anyone believe that?

  167. I didn’t watch the game Poliziano, but Liverpool just seem to have this knack of winning games in the CL even when you think they’re up against a team that should really give them a game, they seem to stroll through. I just don’t get it?

  168. I managed to understand your post? Wow…I guess I have no one to blame but me….I should’ve taken my own advise from 4:23PM.

I wish Ade sulks like Viera from 2001 – 2005.

  169. Ice, Drivelpoo is ok but not horrible enough for the pool. I agree they played well against Real, but Real as many have pointed out were an embarrassment

  170. G4E- good point regarding Famoney and Hleb people cry over them whenthey left they couldn’t do shit last season when it came to the crunch- So I hope people will stop mentioning their name. Also Diarra he is an ordinary player watched the MAdrid game he created F***k all good riddance.
Aex I’m with you on the Ade crap if he focus all his energy on Arsenal and stop deaming about Barca then he will come good he even complemented himself for been a great player. Even the Mighty Henry didn’t say that about himself.
People think I don’t like Ade. does is not the case. Why are we so happy to see players taking us for a ride not giving their all starting with the press when asked about their future they give vage answers and can’t stop talking about other big clubs. at the end of Last season when it was crucial to focus o the pitch Hleb and Flamoney were planning a way out of Arsenal and that to me cheating us fans. Ade if you are a man of honor come out and say I want to stay at Arsenal how hard is that. don’t give us crap answers.

  171. We love you Arsenal….We do
    We love you Arsenal….We do
    AaaaaRrsenal…..We love you

I hope one day I get to sing this song in the NHOF.

  172. Le Gunner, of course you don’t like Ade – it is obvious from your post even though you are in denial. RVP will not sign a contract extension unless Arsenal ‘match his ambition’. I don’t see you criticising him. Cesc has spoken about wanting to play in Spain one day, again not a peep out of you. Ade said Milan and Barca were interested but he chose to stay at Arsenal. As for being a great player, maybe he chose the wrong word (understandable, given that English is not his first language) but he is African footballer of the year, he plays for one of the best clubs in Europe, and he has caught the attention of other top clubs, so I would say he is in a great position. As for the comment about no one knowing what the future holds, that is true – unless you happen to own a crystal ball and know exactly what you will be doing for the rest of your life.

  173. I don’t think Arsenal will lose tonight. Although, the Gunners are not playing like their good old days, teams are finding it hard to beat them.

  174. Passenal- RVP has recently said he wants to stay at Arsenal wants to win things with Arsenal and he has the right to push the club to match his ambition its a good ambition we all wants the same and also he is doing the business on the pitch. Fabregas is a catalan who spent his entire childhood at Barca if he wants to play for Barca ONE DAY that means in 1 year 2 years or 10 years then thats understandable don’t forget he turned down a massive offer from Madrid to stay and that shows he is loyal. I just hope ADE put his head down and do the business for us. I really wnat him to do well at Arsenal but he needs to commit himself first. Its simple come out and say IWANT to stay at Arsenal then all the crap written in media will stop Fabregas was linked with BArca and Madrid a million times but he comes out and makes it clear he is not going anywhere in near future.

  175. I wonder how many of the readers of this blog would like to be held to the standards of conduct they demand from Arsenal players. I wonder how many would like be held to the standard that Adebayor in fact followed. His loyalty to Arsenal was worth a lot of money. The loyalty of some supporters, it seems, is worth less than the price of a season ticket. We sometimes read that players should “play for the shirt,” or other such rubbish. Just a cliche. In fact, we have seen this season that a fetish for the club in the abstract often means hatred of the actual constituents of the club, which are the manager and the players.

  176. Frank's biggest fan

    Yogi,

Could you start your next post with this gif image below? It’s just stunning, and gives people something to yearn for. Thanks

  177. Alex Ice Cream

    G4E,

You obviously didn’t see Vieira play post 2001.
