Ars-Dragging On And More

And it was only 24 hours to Everton…sorry, woke up in a Gene Pitney kind of mood today which is vaguely disturbing. So, Zenit St Petersburg believe that they have reached an agreement with Arsenal over the ‘services’ of Andrei Arshavin. To be honest, this one has dragged, twisted and crawled over the rocks of transfer oblivion, I’ll wait until the club confirm it before getting over-excited. Zenit, meanwhile, are doing that:

A fundamental agreement over the fee in the transfer of the player has been reached between the clubs, subject to a medical. But, at the moment, the basic obstacle preventing the transfer going through are Andrei Arshavin’s personal terms. The player and his agent have made it clear to Arsenal that they will require a higher wage, which the management at Arsenal are not prepared to pay. At the moment, Arsenal will only satisfy those demands at a lower transfer fee. This puts the whole deal in doubt.

So, the clubs are happy but the player is not, according to his spurned ex-lover of an employer. Yea Gods, if a scriptwriter turned up for work at Eastenders with this sort of stuff, they would be marched from the building, having cleared their desk, had their access card taken from them and be handed a brown envelope containing their P45. Mind you, in this technologically advanced age, an email telling them, “You’re fired” would probably be the preferred medium for such a task.

Just to confuse matters, reports have emerged that Arshavin has entered the real world to get his move. Frankly, it just about sums up the current scenario as far as the media is concerned. It is nigh on impossible to get any semblance of the truth when a throw-away comment from Martin Skrtel is blown out of all proportion as if it is some kind of inside track. The hint to the Skrtel opinion was his use of the phrase “I understand“. Hell fire, I understood exactly the same thing from the media coverage in the summer and I have not an ounce of inside knowledge on Arshavin’s preferences for which league he played in. During the summer, his agent had him linked with every major league in Europe so presumably his client did not mind him being hawked around like some sort of footballing tart.

The news of Tomas Rosicky‘s return to training is also treated with some scepticism. Not that I do not believe the story, more that it is perhaps a longer return tio full tiness. Mixed with the missed deadlines over the past twelve months, I simply hope that he gets through this period without breaking down. Certainly, a fit Rosicky would give Arsene the nicest possible headache as far as selection is concerned and also the squad would possess perhaps the most creative midfield in the Premier League.

Right that’s enough of my cynical, bitter and twisted world for today. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Peter Storeys Budgie

Cancel Eboue”s contract and give his wages to Arshavin.Kill two birds with one stone

  2. Does anyone believe the Athletico stories that were floating around Eboue last week?

  3. Queen of Suburbia,

What the ones about him and Jodie Marsh?

  4. Athletico need a new team bike do they?

  5. PSB,

I wish we could cancel Eboue’s wages but we would have to pay out his contract. In a sense its what we are ding anyway as he doesn’t add anything to the team.

  6. Eboue gives alot to the team..and even more to the fans!

  7. Eboue’s to AFC what an O’Shea or Fletcher is to Man U..a stop gap utility player. He’s being over-used by AW but should not be sold unless a better utility-type shows up.

    Arshavin’s coming tra-la-la-la-la!!!!!!!
    I’m a believer Yogi
Wonder if it was an Usmanov delivery?

  8. QOS,

Yes, Jordans married…………………………for now (we’ll what happens when the tv show gets cancelled)

  9. presumably this means rosicky has resumed fitness training, after a full year of no running. Sheesh – We aint gonna see this guy back on the pitch this season, cept maybe a cameo in May.

  10. I must say, I am looking forward to tomorrow’s Ars-pun title Y1. This transfer drag on is testing your creativity! But well done to date!!!

  11. The Usmanov rumours regarding him paying out the extra couple of million, in the Russian Press look to me like his PR agent planting the story knowing it’d get picked up on over here.

  12. “The Usmanov rumours regarding him paying out the extra couple of million, in the Russian Press look to me like his PR agent planting the story knowing it’d get picked up on over here.”

My suspicion exactly, QoS. It smells of a PR plant.

  13. Arshavins a usefull player but he sounds like a right cock

  14. Hello and good afternoon fellow Arsenal fans. As Frank would say – it’s a great day to be an Arsenal fan. But then every day is a great day; how lucky we are to support such a great team with such a great history. Imagine if we all supported one of those dire scrappy teams that struggle every season, changing managers, spending a fortune on players and hoping to finish in the top half of the table at best. We’d still back anyone who pulled on the shirt of course – that is what being a fan means, but I wouldn’t want to swap supporting a team which is challenging for the highest honours just about every season. It is a joy to be behind every single member of our squad.

  15. steww,

    Except Eboue

  16. Like I said. Every member of the squad.

  17. steww,

    Yes, every member except Eboue

  18. Eboue as a right back would not only get into most teams in the EPL he would get into most teams in Europe; he is a valuable asset to the club and because of that they have offered him a new contract. The rationale being that a player with a 5 year contract is worth more to a club than a player with only one year remaining. That said, I cannot see him staying past the summer; his role, as understudy to Sagna will have been taken by Coquelin.
I read this site every day, I regard the owner as having a great depth of Arsenal football knowledge; I find the Frank and Poli show very entertaining, I also understood the concerns of Alex Ice cream over the midfield in fact they were concerns I shared but this is where the similarity ends; I have moved on. Alex you seem to revel in every miss-fortune that comes our way; this is not only unhealthy it is anti-Arsenal. Things are looking up, the unit is getting stronger and stronger. Enjoy it.

  19. I’ve just been a little bit sick in my mouth.

  20. Not at your post London – I meant the line “a joy to be behind every single member of the squad”.

I mean I like supporting Arsenal and everything but that’s a bit o.t.t.

  21. Man Who are injury-ravaged today but in their last games they’ve faced teams equally injury ravaged…Tottenham and now West Brom.

  22. Busy night tonight.
    Have to support baggies against manusa;
Have to support pompey against villans.

    Come on, simpson & traore!!
My fingers and toes are all crossed for them!!

  23. Peter Storeys Budgie

    Aman

O”Shea and Fletcher dont play every game Eboue does. And it doesnt matter who bad he plays and God does he play bad he knows he will be in the team for the next game. This cannot be right

  24. What does eboue offer arsenal?nothing

  25. TC

I’d hold out more hope of Pompey getting a result than WBA! The strain of management is taking its’ toll on Tony Adams. At the weekend, he looked about ten years older than he is.

    YW

  26. London,

What are your thoughts on Janine trying to shaft Ronnie Mitchel? Playing with fire a bit isn’t she?

  27. Bergy,

Well according to london we could sell Eboue for 10 million to barca or Real. I believe theres a bidding war going on. Man city have just come in with the old £100 million

  28. Eboue has had a torrid season; his confidence is shot; he’s out of his natural position – am guessing here, but he probably DREADS home games.. so why does AW keep with him ?

Not criticizing anyone – am just puzzled. Dammit, i LIKE all i’ve heard about Eboue as a man, and his ‘antics’ are (again am guessing) just a desperate attempt to help the team.

  29. PSB,

    ***Aman

O”Shea and Fletcher dont play every game Eboue does. And it doesnt matter who bad he plays and God does he play bad he knows he will be in the team for the next game. This cannot be right***

False! Appearance stats for the season:

    Fletcher….26
    O’Shea….29
    Eboue……23

  30. Thanks OG –
    Getting into these stats!

  31. Thanks too OG, PSB i did say AW he was being over-used by AW.
    and
I’d be pained if Bolton did get Veloso for 12m!

  32. typo correctn:
i did say he was being over-used by AW.

  33. Eboue offers back up to Sagna, no more, no less.

I am confused by your comment Arse21.

  34. Fun and game seem to be going on at Zenit. why bother to post an article on their site until the deal is fully done. It looks they are using their site to shift blame if it doesn’t go though, or force the issue else where. Its a shame that clubs act like this nowadays and i am happy with the fact that Arsenal don’t and always seem to try and act with integrity (for instance the recent signing of Freeman from Gillingham).
I am sure AW cant stand all this mucking around, but i guess he think Arshavin can add to the squad so will put up with it.

Ps i think Eboue should be given full support when he is wearing an Arsenal Shirt. Not only will booing negativity effect him but also the whole team – who wants to play for a club where you get booed by your owns fans if you put in a bad performance (in a match we were winning no less).

  35. ‘eboue’s sh*t’

    ‘No he isnt’

    ‘yes, he’s sh*t’

    ‘No he isnt’.

Ok, we get the freaking message!!!!!!

  36. When he crosses the white line – I hope Eboue has a stormer and i of course support him.

But beforehand I hope to God he isn’t playing!

  37. News for u guys Wenger has said he hasnt agreed anything for Arshavin in the press conference i just saw it… If it happens it iwll happen on the last day im sure there will be 2 signings …

  38. That’s a fair call QoS. Although I believe he could become a better player. He may not be the sharpest tool though, that may be his real problem.

Usmanov to pay money to secure Arshavin? Ffssssh. Publicity stunt to make us want the Fat russian. Arsenal would not touch such a deal with a barge pole.

If he does not come now we are better off without him.

  39. “I’ve just been a little bit sick in my mouth.

Not at your post London – I meant the line “a joy to be behind every single member of the squad”. ”

Well that’s refreshing. The thought of 100% unequivicol support for each and every member of your own side makes you not just feel sick but actually be sick. What kind of fan are you?

  40. One not raised by Hallmark i’d say Steeew!

    Jeez, simper much?

  41. “Jeez, simper much?”

    What language is that?

  42. Eboue`s been done to death on here , so to speak, but until we get someone to play RM he`ll be first choice most weeks.

If AA comes & is played there I`d imagine the defensive side of his game wouldn`t match Eboue`s – but he would offer way more going forward. A bit like Theo , really

  43. I was trying to speak Hallmark.

  44. All this crap coming out of Zenit just screams of desperation. They are trying to panic another club into putting in a bid closer to there valuation (Step forward Man City). Arsenal have made there bid – take it or leave it. If no other club comes in we have a good chance of getting him, although if we do it will probably be at 5 seconds to midnight on deadline day.

  45. Looking at the way Zenit have conducted this transfer through the press and our obvious desire to do a deal behind closed doors (As we always try to) is it time for the clubs in the premier league to start lobbying UEFA or FIFA to bring in a code of conduct for transfers?

It would be interesting to see which teams supported it and who did not.

  46. £113 million spent by Prem clubs this window so far.

The recession is obviously biting hard.

  47. I look forward to Arsehavin coming, that about all.

Zenit have made a mockery of the transfer but waht can you, if Arsehavin comes, who cares about the crap.

Eboue no doubt is a good RB and offers more defense in th team when in the mid. I believe he would play best in the DM role if not RB. I dont like him much on the wing but hey, what are gonna do, the Boss plays him so we “MUST” support.

    Wins for WBA and
Portsmouth tonight or at least draws.

    Arsenal is a great side!

  48. “£113 million spent by Prem clubs this window so far.

The recession is obviously biting hard.”

How much was spent by spurs and man city though?

  49. What was spent last year?

  50. It will be a hard game for West Brom, but with Simpson in the team anything could happen.

Portsmouth have a great chance of beating Villa. Their team is at least as good as Villa’s, but they’ve been underperforming recently. It’s hard to predict how the result at the weekend will affect them. Will it act as a stimulus, or a discouragement? Villa’s luck is about to run out: if not tonight, then soon. They are to the middle of the season what Hull were to the start. They are about to run head first into reality – an immovable obstacle.

  51. Poliziano – Please don’t remind me about reality, it’s no fun at all.

  52. I can’t remember a more boring day for football.

Today is truly the nadir of the transfer window.

  53. The fates lead the willing, and drag the unwilling.

  54. Veee-laaa were the third biggest spending club in Europe in the summer so their big improvement should not have been unexpected.

O`Neill`s teams always play to the same basic formula which has brought him a lot of success over the years.

Hopefully their Cup runs will effect their league form but I don`t see them folding just yet.

Big Tone could do with a bit of luck at Pompey. I can see him heading to the nearest Wetherspoons at this rate.

  55. It’s intresting when you think about it. No huge signings but there must have been a lot of transfers to add up to £113 Million.

Spurs must be the biggest spenders. I hope they spend more. They can only get worse.

Have Man. C. spent very much?

  56. How very true Pz.

  57. Incidentally, if Arse doesn’t come to the Arse, what price Saviola?

The Independent has him off to Pompey on loan. Why has his star fallen so quickly?

  58. Paulie W -
Funny… Wetherspoons!! Shame ?Tone has to be another ‘big’ manager though.. I wish he’d chill out on a couple of -

  59. Hoping for a big result tonight at Pompey.
Seeing TA in big trouble, my heart bleeds (although my heart bleeds even when I see my friends coughing!)

  60. You ought to see a doctor about that, ToughCookie.

  61. “It’s intresting when you think about it. No huge signings but there must have been a lot of transfers to add up to £113 Million.”

spurs are busy re-signing players for more than they sold them for – and probably on higher wages, and then you have city overpaying for average talents – a fool and his money is soon parted!

  62. Under Ramos, Spurs sold their best players. Under Redknapp, they’re buying back their worst players.

What will their next manager do?

  63. “(although my heart bleeds even when I see my friends coughing!)”

    You big softee Tough Cookie!

  64. Perhaps just dissolve the club.

  65. They’re all a bunch of idiots with lots of money…nothing surprising really. They just cover their lack of knowledge by paying more. Unfortunately that only attracts people who want to use you for your stupid money.

Villa to lose two points today? Or the three?

  66. I think Pompey could win tonight, and that’s what I’m hoping for.

  67. united are a bunch of whiners. They complain about their injuries, but only a couple of first choice players are out, and one of them (Rooney) ought not to be a first choice player anyway.

  68. I’ve just thought: Is AIC Alex Ferguson?

    Both whiners
    Both ill-tempered
    Both critical of Arsenal

  69. If you got points for having an ugly manager Spurz would have to be in the CL.

Along with Everton, Man U & Wigan I reckon.

Oh, hang on, I`ve forgotten about Boro & Bolton & West Brom & , oh forget it !

  70. I hope so Poliziano, and Ure to draw or lose as well, Simpson to score.

  71. my name is Ronny, and im addicted to Newsnow.

I could have been prime minister, but the internet destroyed my drive to run for election.

  72. G4E,

    Simpson to score a hatrick!!

Ronaldo to break his knee while diving.

Giggs starts crying at 85th minute and says he can’t take it anymore. I AM TIRED!!

Vidic takes down Ferdinand while going for the same ball.

    Berbatov to miss sitters.

And Tevez exhausts himself by running all over the pitch. A bit like kuyt.

  73. I can’t see an expert like Ronaldo making a mistake while diving.

  74. Kanu starts upfront for Pompey.

    Kanuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu !

  75. Simpson’s starting, Traore’s on the bench, Barazite’s starting against birmingham.
    Come on young guns!

  76. Poliziano,

I agree, but I’m being just optimistic about it today. Maybe, just maybe….it all goes wrong for him today.

  77. Ateeb, that’s kind of the dream of a lifetime :)

Funny Poliziano, I think that’s what red-nose train him on day in, day out…nothing else. I heard he trains him first to dive in the pool so he can lose the fear, then in the mud, then on grass….it’s a science and “Divando” is a quick learner

  78. BTW,

has anybody read that Napoli is trying to land Flamini? It may be the usual transfer b.s. but if Beckham stays in Milan as he wishes, Flam may be in big trouble…Oh dear…

  79. Yes. I can imagine a siuation where Ronaldo has the ball in the six yard box, with an open goal in front of him. A defender come within a couple of strides, and Ronaldo is about to dive, but gets caught in two minds, wondering if he ought to shoot. The dive could go wrong, and he tears the cruciate ligaments in his knee to the sound of raucous laughter.

  80. Hahahaha G4E@ your previous post. I just pictured that:)

    Tough cookie,
Yes I read that today. It doesn’t matter if he gets transfers or not. He can’t get worse than right now? He’s had so few starts and is prefered over the older players. HAHAHAHAH @ his decision. Screw him, he could have been something here, but he chose the money. And now look where he is. Warming benches. Not even that sometimes.

Same applies to Hleb, although I see him starting to play more in the Barcelano setup. But with inform Messi, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta, Basquests, and Eto, I really don’t see him out performing any one of these for now. Late substitute he shall remain then.

  81. ARSHAVIN UPDATE

There is mystery as to the whereabouts of Andrei Sergeyevich Arshavin after he was last seen in Dubai yesterday. Press reports are coming in that several members of the KGB may have seized the player from the Burj Al Arab hotel, taken him to a superyacht moored off Palm Island, with the final destination mooted to be the Lubyanka, Moscow.

The infamous Lubyanka building is known as a prison and torture chamber. It is there that he will meet up with Dennis Lachter, his agent, who is being held on charges of high treason and conspiricy against the russian empire.

The director general of zenit football club, Maxim Kafelnikov, commented that the fee for Arshavin was agreed, but it was speculated last night by MI6 and CIA sources, that the publication of news on their web site was a smokescreen for the arrest and capture of the player.

Meanwhile, there was a serious lack of diplomatic attempts to free the agent, Lachter. It is understood that the foreign office is embarrassed by the high fees he charges for doing remarkably little work, and they welcomed his incarceration.

  82. haha Muppet. Wasn’t it Maxim Klashinkov?

  83. tennis on the brain…

  84. Muppet, lol!!

  85. Queen of Suburbia

I don’t expect any Arshavin news until Thursday now.

I still think we’re going to get him on the last day after Zenit have exhausted their box of tricks to encourage someone else to come in for him.

  86. good article in the times today about the evils of modern football, worth the read for the chuckle

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article5589815.ece?token=null&offset=84&page=8

  87. m_gonna – ha ha… some very true points in there !

QoS – it’s real brinkmanship. If we don’t sign him, I just hope that Walcott comes back very very soon.

  88. Anyone ever noticed the really small smiley face at the bottom of this blog?:|

I just came across it today. Was it always there?

  89. good spot Ateeb ! Maybe it’s trying to encourage positive vibes.

  90. Re: Little smiley – yeah, well spotted [ YW wondering how long oit would be, no doubt!)
It needs to be just a bit bigger though…

Spuds killed that one…. but Stoke.. too damned nice, you lot !

  91. Stoke not putting up much resistence at spuds. 3 down already.

  92. It was always there Ateeb…I noticed it too :)

  93. The smiley face seems to be produced by a wordpress plug-in called wpstats, which collects statistics about page use.

  94. The problem is that when the likes of Stoke and Portsmouth play teams like spurs and Villa, they think they are in with a chance of winning and play more open, thus allowing the latter the opportunity to get at them unlike when they play against us. We just have to focus on our own performance and win every game we can then see where that takes us.

  95. Ok Ateeb, I think you should dream the opposite of your 7:22PM post for it to come true. Everything is going the opposite of your wish so far :)

  96. Villa must lose points for us to get past them, we already played them home and away!

  97. Gunner4Ever, we had to wait until the last game of the season to beat the spuds to 4th place not so long ago! I hope we don’t have to do so again, but until it’s mathematically impossible, we have to go for the PL, which means focus on our own performances and see where it takes us.

  98. Ouch! Every single result going badly atm.
    Heskey too..

  99. WBA and Pompey down to 10 men now.

  100. Is Traore playing for Portsmouth?

  101. He should be.

  102. Especially since they went a man down.

  103. Wow, WBA seem to think they have been hard done by by the refs.

They wouldnt have won won regardless though.

  104. Geez, a lot of cards.

  105. Villa’s luck lasts another match.

  106. True that Passenal…we have to win our games first, but it would be nice to see teams above us lose as well….I’m just being greedy that’s all :)

  107. Arshavan will blink eventually and sign up. We can pay over the top like, the Chelsea, City and Spurs.

He has to accept a pay cut and come. Any development that will see Eboue on the bench is welcome.

  108. You forgot the bit about low quality players…and English English English….

But that’s a great progress Howie.

  109. Gunner4Ever, Arshavin may not be English but at least he’s white so Howard does not seem to have a problem with him.

  110. I see Passenal…I honestly didn’t know that.

So, it’s not only English vs Foreign but there is colours involved in the mix too?

Howie never fails to surprise…so I will revise my last comment to say…You’re making a great progress for the worse Howie…
