Arshavin & Arsene Gives A Reality Cheque

Arsene had a lot to say in his press conference yesterday, providing the assembled media with lots to write about other clubs but nothing particularly new concerning incoming players, especially Andrei Arshavin.

Unusually for his reign at the club, this one is being conducted in public, or partially at least, thanks to the verbosity of Zenit St Petersburg:

[We are] nowhere. That means we are not close to signing anybody. We know what we want to do, but we are not close to signing today because I would tell you. But there is no basic news. There again, we are in negotations yes but we want to respect our principles. I am very hopeful [of a deal]

Which is no further on than earlier this week, publicly at least. Patience is a virtue and some will have to be displayed by us in waiting for this matter to be resolved. Patience is in short supply in some quarters as it seems that the CEO should bend over and allow the Russians to shove their demands up his Arsenal whilst raiding the piggy bank.

The clubs have their respective valuations of the player but to suggest that Arsenal should simply hand over another £5m here or there to seal the deal is nonsensical. Arshavin cannot join in time for the visit to Hull so why the rush? In the time that the two clubs have been talking, Arsenal are unbeaten. Arshavin could not have impacted on the draws against Villa or Liverpool nor could he have improved the three points taken against Portsmouth or Bolton; that is the maximum available. If he is to join, he will do so when the time is right for all parties and that includes the signing of any replacement by Zenit.

Problematically for Wenger, the back pages are filled with Manchester City’s desire to spend the equivalent of the GDP of a small third world nation on Kaka. £100m is a frankly ludicrous sum for the player, one that would take the best part of a decade to make back by which time the Brazilian would probably have let his contract run down and moved on elsewhere leaving City looking at huge losses. Whilst it is fun for the hacks, the reality of City’s situation is that they are trying to come from considerably further behind as a club than Chelsea were.

Little doubt that Zenit were hoping City would come in with a bid for their prize asset but that seems unlikely. Were they to do so, Wenger noted that Arsenal cannot compete:

I don’t feel in connection with that at all because we live in a football club which lives in the real world. That means we spend the money we make from our income. The implications [of a £100million transfer] would be disturbance on the market. Inflationary trend in a deflationary world. But it leaves Arsenal where we are now. That means we spend the money we produce and we make. We are in a world where we live from three kinds of income – gate receipts, the sponsors and the television money. That is the real world of football. The rest is exceptional and is not the rule of our world. It is a special income with unlimited resources, but it’s not the real world. Whether it is us, Sunderland or Coventry we live with the same rules. Manchester City are in a different world because they do not live with their income.

The word ‘yet’ seems to be missing from that last sentence. Two clubs have spent freely in the past, two clubs that have or are enduring a reality check. The salutory lessons that Real Madrid and Chelsea are finding will no doubt visit Eastlands in the future, sooner rather than later if they do not qualify for Europe next season. Madrid’s Galactico policy would have ended in tears had they not done a dodgy deal with their training ground and Chelsea are ‘reviewing‘ their spending in all areas, presumably trying to stop an ‘Animal House‘ outbreak in their canteen by charging for meals. The thought of Frank Lampard sitting there with his mouth full of mashed potato, asking if anyone can guess what he is impersonating makes me see him in a different light. Oh, and by the way, it’s still a zit Frank.

Like Wenger, I feel no pangs of jealousy with City’s spending power. Whilst it would be nice to be able to pop out and buy the odd Kaka and wash it down with a bottle of Casillas, the building of a squad is more long-term and leaves a sense of permanence in a sport known for its’ short-termism. There are improvements to be made but the sense of achievement when silverware rolls in is tangibly more satisfying if it is done the proper way.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. …could not agree with you more.

  2. I would argue Madrid have not learned their lesson £30M for Huntelaar and £20M for Diarra does not say financial prudence to me.

  3. “There are improvements to be made but the sense of achievement when silverware rolls in is tangibly more satisfying if it is done the proper way.”
That’s it right there Yogi – you nailed it.

  4. Seems to me as though we’ve struggled in the transfer market since the departure of David Dein…

  5. Klon

Madrid spent nothing in the summer – relatively speaking – and are starting their pre-election spree. The difference is that this time their finances are in a lot better order than they were at the turn of the century.

    YW

  6. Great article YW…..Arshavin and a central defender would be a good bit of business this Jan however I think we will go to the wire with Arshavin and a central defender is well and truely out of the question!

    Toure/Eboue/Song as our defensive midfielder.

How long is Walcott our for by the way?

  7. Watching Arsene’s press conference…. I love the way he plays the press with such a “dead bat”… almost (but not quite) with contempt. And certainly not anything close to mutual respect. Arsene clearly prefers the training ground to the press conference. Not for him the operatic stage that Mourhinho sought. In a way though, it is no wonder we get indifferent press coverage. He doesn’t give them much to chew on!

  8. Real get cash from the spanish government – that’s as a big a scandal as anything in football.

£100m and half a mill a week is just obscene. Someone needs to return some sanity to the game.

  9. As always, there is healthy and intelligent view of the worlds of Arsenal and football.

But to be frank, i read a few of the papers yesterday and many of them sayong that it would not be good for KAka to move to city. What are they talking about, of course the boy is eager to win things. But think of the salary they are offering. Who in the right frame of mind would not move to a different company, lifting its family to another country maybe even change your fundamental priorities if they offered this kind of money. Even if he comes from a middle class home, and money might not be, when the dad seeing the life they can have i believe he will advise his son to take this chance. Play there for 3 years and then move on if his ambition is not meet.

Otherwise i agree with Yogi and many more, the money spent here is disgusting and I am quite suprised that so many fans on comment boards still think its ok. This is not 100 million in monopoly money, this is real cash, oil cash.

    jonas

  10. mingus,

Perhaps you have it backwards. Wenger gives them much to chew on. They come out with blazing headlines after talking to him. It’s always misrepresented because the football media, a couple of individuals aside, have the collective brainpower of a snail.

  11. Yogi,

Noone is suggesting that AW just hand over the extra £5m without negotiating but if it came down to it he should cough up rather than lose the player if he thinks he is that good.

Zenit bought Danny in the summer as a replacement for Arshavin so this is not an issue.

  12. Jonas – Kaka signed a new contract in 2008 that earns him £10m a year til 2013.

That’s more than enough money to transform his already wealthy lifestyle and that of his family, leaving plenty left over.

Does he need more cash? I don’t what difference another few million makes when you’ve already got £50m in the bank. I think he’s an idiot if he moves.

  13. You’re right about the Arshavin replacement, AIC. Danny scored an excellent goal against united in the UEFA Super Cup – showed up Ferdinand and Vidic for a couple of chumps. Not a match that Manu Matty would like to see again.

  14. I find the whole Arshavin transfer thing very disconcerting. Its just not Arsenal . . . its too public! I sincerely hope that Arsene hasn’t lost the plot but I would bet my bottom dollar that we will end up signing nobody this window after all our returning players are like new signings????????

  15. Ole Gunner. Actually, on consideration, you are right. Wenger does give the press much to chew on. And he does have a good reputation for answering honestly and intelligently, any question that he is asked. But he does it with a “dead bat”. I think he just refuses to play the “football as soap-opera” game that the press thrive off.

  16. Peter Storeys Budgie

    Yogi

You say handing over another £5 m to get a player you really want is nonsensical.Did you say the same thing when we failed to get Alonso for another £2m

As i said yesterday £5m is a drop in the ocean if we clinch 4th place

Failure to qualify for the CL will not only mean a loss of £30-40m but also the lose of our big players Cesc and RVP who want to be in the CL

  17. PSB… i dont think Cesc and Rvp will jump ship just like that if we fail to get Champs League (which we wont).

They care about the club more than anyone, u can see it in their eyes when they score and celebrate. Wenger and Arsenal wouldnt allow it anyway, and i cant imangine either of them going to Wenger and saying we want out. They have ambitions yes… but they are just at fault for our position in the league as all the other players. They are in it together…and being captain he aint going anywhere!

  18. Hope Manucho doesn’t get a game against us tomorrow. Saw him in Ghana at the Cup of Nations and he’s great in the air and has a decent shot on him. He’s dangerous.

  19. If we were to move for a CB, than I see no better option than Agger. And I think he made it to Milan now for 9m. The only downturn was his injury situation.

PSB and AIC, stop assuming that we’re going to fail to qualify for the CL. 5m is shit lot of money.

  20. Plus, i dont know how much effect Arshavin will have, he might be chucked into the starting lineup right away if needed… but i dont think Wenger intends to do that. We all know he likes them to bed into the team philosophy and way of playing 1st. Vela has taken 6 months just to get off the bench.. so all this crying out for a signing, when and if we get him, i dont even know if we will see him that much. Walcott, Vela, Nasri, Eboue, Diaby will be in front of him purely down to playing time in the team.

  21. I personally think we’ll get more than fourth place this season – and that’s with the squad we have now, depleted by injuries.

Until the 90s, creating a great squad wasn’t like shopping at the supermarket. With the young players we have, the transfer market as it is, and the money we’re willing to spend – developing from within is the only sensible route. It’s about having a bit of patience and allowing the relationships to build within the team.

I’d assume that if we’d got Alonso in the summer we might be in a worse situation than we’re in now. Our quick, creative playmakers like Ros and Theo would still be out injured and we’d be stuck with a guy who, though talented, doesn’t have much pace and likes to play long balls.

That wouldn’t help us penetrate teams that play deep against us. Meanwhile our strikers are quick, but not lighting fast (I still think they’re building the best partnership in the league though), so they wouldn’t be suited to a playmaker like Alonso.

We’d have splashed out on Alonso, so that’s money that wouldn’t be here to help us sign a more talented player we could actually do with, like Arshavin.

I’m just putting that idea forward – in an amateur way.

  22. Thing is AIC, if a selling club knows that a buying club will always pay the selling club’s valuation, then there will never be any negotiation.

In economic terms, the maximum price becomes the minimum price.

Funnily enough after my post yesterday suggesting that Milan should increase the fee demanded by £20 million, because Hughes said that whatever they pay, Kaka would be worth it, I read this morning that they now may want £130 Million.

Life imitating art. For it is not in art that we deal on this site?

  23. F. Frederick Skitty

There are no gurantees where we will finish with or without Arshavin.

Some people should just admit that they are creaming for a signing, so they can brag to their mates/workmates. It’s a bit like Wags needing the newest Louis Vuitton bag. Who cares if it costs an extra £5m to be able to say we bought a player who may prove as good a signing as Torres or perhaps Rebrov?

For the record, I’d love Arshavin to come, but at the right price. Wenger will pay the right price, but he won’t pay too much – what’s the point in bleating about it now?

Unfortunately I suspect that nothing will happen until the 11th hour, it makes no sense for Zenit and the agent not to hold out for as long as possible, in the hope that someone else comes in for him to drive the price up.

Another 2 weeks of these daily no-news updates is annoying, do these journalists really consider this work?

  24. Ateeb

PSB and AIC both are convinced that a signing will automatically get us into champs league spot.. Dont work like that, no matter who we bring in we still have to battle for the points… i want him 2 come as much as any1 but if he doesnt the 11 players we will be fielding should have enough about them to push us up the table. I still believe we have a shit at the title if we can hold out till our better players get back.

  25. have a shot* i meant to say!! haha

  26. F. Frederick Skitty

    very good point

Makes no sense to conclude the transfer now, we have got alot more bollox to read through!

  27. Big AL, great observation. Alonso would have been of no help to us, because we’re doing fine in the centre of midfield to me. All we need is an attacking midfielder in the mould of Rosicky or Hleb.

And if we don’t I won’t be too dissapointed. With Theo returning, and Rosicky(hopefully) soon. And Eduardo, I think we have a decent enough squad. Ashravin/attacking player, might come useful though.

Let’s see how Wenger uses Vela from now on in. It’s about time that he starts to get games. If he works well on the wings, I don’t see any reason that we NEED Ashravin.

  28. I prefer Denilson anyway.

No way Ateeb, 12 million for Upson is clearly the way to go!

    Agree with Chris as well.

Do people get bored of looking at the team we have or something?

Vela’s more acclimatised to the premiership now and will boost this squad considerably.

It’s a bit like the fable with the dog and the bone that Consolbob used: A dog’s walking with a bone in his mouth. He comes to a bridge over a river. While crossing it he looks down and sees his reflection in the water. He thinks it’s another dog and wants the bone that the other dog’s carrying, so he opens his mouth and drops his bone in the river and loses it.

The dog learned its lesson. What does that say about Arsenal fans?!

  29. Peter Storeys Budgie

    chrisGoona

we should finish 4th but the title not a prayer. Before we play Hull Man Utd will be 9pts clear of us and they wont blow a 9pt lead. They do not have to play any of the top 6 away from home

The evidence of the first half of the season says we wont finish 4th.But maybe it was a Bobby Ewing dream

  30. You see PSB I think that we are just coming good. It looks like one or two others have peaked a bit early. AV’s luck won’t last either.

  31. PSB… on the evidence of having Wenger, Fab, RvP, Ade, Nasri.. and finishing top 4 for the last 11 yrs or so there are a lot of people that disagree with you. I am guessing we can easily get 2nd place, if showed any kind of form we would be sitting top.. u seem to overate the other teams a bit too much. As crap as we have played at times and with all our injuries we are only 8 points. Do them 8 points mean that Man U or Liverpool are that much better than us. Villa are scraping victories left right n center, but how long can they keep that up?.. Chelsea are nothing, there is no fluency in their play or strategy, Liverpool i guarantee will finish below us. Their squad is a hell of a lot weaker than ours.

  32. Consolbob

Very very true.. just look back to last season when we came out flying, we couldnt keep that momentum going. At least now we are starting to build on each performances, we all know there is more to come, and better things to come from the lads. Just a matter of getting back to that level then maintaining it.

  33. great post today YW.

and Poli – ooohhhhh mate that was below the belt ! “ManU Matty” …. call me anything you like other than that mate but never accuse me of supporting another team !

I’m off to lick my wounds in the corner.

  34. Any team news for tomorrow, heard Song could be back, is all the other injured still out?

  35. Sorry, Matty. Couldn’t resist.

  36. you never know how these things will pan out but annoyingly there’s no doubt Villa have the easier run in.

    Their last 5:
    Bolton (a)
    Hull (h)
    Fulham (a)
    Boro (a)
    Toon (h)

    and we’ve got

    Boro (h)
    Portsmouth (a)
    Chelsea (h)
    Manu (a)
    stoke (h)

  37. chris,

You are incorrect. Neither PSB nor myself said that Arshavin would guarantee fourth so stop making this up.

What I am saying is this: We need creative players with the departure of Hleb and injuries to Tom, Cesc and even Theo. AW rates Arshavin so buying him would not only give us a better chance of finishing 4th, it is also a signing for next season when he would have bedded in ready to help the charge for top honours.

  38. yes AIC… but you make it out to be all doom and gloom if we dont buy him, you probably have never seen on him play for a full 90 mins.. I know many Arsenal supporters who havnt yet see him as the ideal player to bring in. Its just madness in my eyes how we all think he will be amazzing for us when many havnt seen anything more than a few clips on youtube.

If Wenger is trying to buy him though he must have something about it. After all he did bring in Nasri, henry, Pires, Vieira etc.

  39. Ohh and AIC

Im sure PSB can talk for himself

  40. Havent commented for a while ! neither read them as often as i would like .how is every one at aclf ! yogi i salute you sir for continuing with your excellent posts and for other contributors like frank chris goona , polizano for providing a safe haven for the more optimistic among us although some excellent contributors such as ny marcus , malaysian gooner have gone missing or have they switched to the dark side . is howard still posting , he must be overjoyed at arsenes recent development of english talent ! ps i know my english sucks !

  41. THE TIME AND THE TEST!

I have to say I am really looking forward to the game against Hull. I feel it would be a great TEST of the mettle and strength of our team. I have a feeling they will drag us into the mud tomorrow! GOOD!

Our team has been DEEPLY SUSPECT against well organized opposition who have not been afraid to get at our faces. So I believe, despite hull’s poor form, they will have the crowd behind them and play the physical and pressing game. PERFECT!

Despite arsene’s never ending complaints about opposition being “too physical” or “negative”, our team must learn to cope with it because it is the reality. To be true champions you need to be able to beat teams irrespective of whatever tactics they might adopt.

Moaning and complaining about it will only ENCOURAGE the opposition. It has gone on for too long anyway… I want our lads to toughen up and stand up to be counted when the going gets tough. Can we roll up our sleeves, get into the mud and beat the beast?

I am PLEASED that Sam allardyce has come back, and that too at Blackburn!! Well, well… thats going to be JUICY. I am anxiously waiting for us to meet the rovers and see whether this young team has the stomach for the fight or not.

Can we finally prove that we are NOT the whining cry babies who cant handle a knock, that everybody(with decent justification I might add) makes us out to be?

But hull it is, first up… I am personally not too concerned for a victory(obviously I want us to win). But what I am looking for is heart, desire and strength to soldier on whatever the circumstances from our team.

That is going to be a crucial and essential component in determining whether we will have any success in the “future” that we keep talking about, as arsenal fans, so often.

Lets see if our lads have it in them… starting tomorrow!

    Cheers all!!

  42. chris,

I have only seen Arshavin here and there but I am going on the fact that Wenger rates him.

I think that buying a creative player who we need, who AW rates will increase our chances of success. There is no guarantee but you can say that about anything.

Its clear that we need a boost and that we are struggling as laboured wins over Bolton and Portsmouth and drwas v Boro show.

  43. AIC

Cant say i dont agree.. every gooner is hoping for a player to come in and gives us an extra element to our squad. I have confidence in the team, but adding someone who is meant to be 6th best in the world cant harm our aspirations for the season.

    My team for Saturday:

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Djourou CLichy
    Nasri Diaby Denilson Vela
    RvP Ade

I think Vela is still short of game time, but really want Wenger to just throw him in and see how deals with more minutes in a game. He has looked bright coming off the bench, adding width and speed to our attacks.

The Defence is getting better, less and less chances are being created, i like the look of Djourou along side anyone. Nasri can instigate the attacks down the right, where Eboue is just not influencing the game enough. So Vela in for Eboue, with Nasri switching to the right.

Diaby is the one to look out for in the coming games. He will be trying to prove he is the actual new Vieira.

  44. I’d go with an attacking 4-2-3-1, to get nasri on the ball as much as poss

    defence as mentioned above

    denilson diaby

    RVP nasri vela

    Ade

  45. Well basically ur just movin Nasri to the center and RvP out wide where he is less influencial. Could work tho if Nasri and RvP combine well but i would like to see 4-4-2. If needed then push Nasri into the center in the Cesc role where he has been used towards the end of games. Dont want to see Eboue right midfield, Wenger can say he brings balance etc, but he aint been performing well at all. Ive never got on his back but i think others in the squad deserve a starting spot far greater than Eboue at the moment.

Ramsey for me is one, and so is Vela.

  46. I dont think you can play vela wide left in an orthodox 4-4-2.

  47. Naga,

“Can we finally prove that we are NOT the whining cry babies who cant handle a knock, that everybody(with decent justification I might add) makes us out to be?”

Are you by any chance reffering to the tackle on Eduardo? He should have been man enough and got on with the play right?

It’s fans like you who pisses me off. Can’t handle a knock? What about teams who come to the pitch, only with one tactic and that to assert themselves physically. Time and again, we’ve seen two footed challenges on our players. Tackles, that were deliberatly made not only to get the ball but also to harm the player as much as possible with the follow up.

“Moaning and complaining about it will only ENCOURAGE the opposition. It has gone on for too long anyway… I want our lads to toughen up and stand up to be counted when the going gets tough. ”

Moaning? I remember Wenger stating that the way teams set out against us. It clearly shows they’re going for a draw, and takes out the juice out of the game. Which is hardly anything but moaning, but from a footballing aspect a downflal. And he himself said, we need to adapt to beat such teams. What exactly are you adding here? That you have discovered something extraordinary that you couldn’t wait to tell us? The only ones I’ve seen moaning since the start of the seasons have been fans like u.

“Lets see if our lads have it in them… starting tomorrow!”

What’s so special about tommorow? Frankly speaking our LADS have shown time and again that they can beat whatever opposition you put infront of them. They require consistency, and better luck on the injury front.

  48. Exactly, but it’s not just Eduardo. We lose a load of players to long and short term injuries because of the tactics we face every week.

At the same time, we don’t just get screwed over by dodgy tackles inflicting instant injury: Eduardo, Nasri vs Wigan, Theo and Ade vs Stoke etc; it’s also the wear and tear of playing in these kind of games that does for many of our players.

I’m no physio, but I’d imagine that you’re going to be more prone to injury if you’re taking a kicking every single week. Maybe I’m wrong.

I agree that we should get our heads down and play, but we also have to stick to our principles. If the other side cheats, or doesn’t play in good spirit, then we have to call them out on it or risk their behaviour becoming even more accepted than it already is.

  49. Ateeb

Very well said. Naga is one of them fans that likes to take into account the view of the media and outsiders firstly and bases his judgement of team affairs around them. For us fans that watch the games for what they are and block out all the media crap… we can clearly see that most teams we play set out to physically put us off our game. Sometimes they can do it in a fair manner, but many times we have seen in the past and this season that other teams cant handle the qiality of our players so what do they do??.. well take a look at the injury room and u will see.

Also Ateeb… better luck wont come with the injuries, because like i said its the way we play, we enjoy having the ball. We aint the counter attacking team of old, maybe when we get Walcott, Fab etc back we can break faster. But until then teams will always try chop us down no matter what. Remember one of the reasons for Hleb leaving was the consistent fouling on him.. he was our main player last season who held the ball up.. This year it is Nasri, see a link? he also has been out on several occasions due to injury and his continually getting bundled over.

Our team aint ‘pussys’ and i aint complaining becuase i believe if we step up into another next gear, we will outplay any opposition and they wont get the chance to injure us. When Wenger speaks about what gear we are playing in,, i would say at the moment we are still in 1st maybe 2nd yet still pulling results and 8 points off top spot. There is no way this team is playing at its fullest right now yet we still grinding results.

  50. And people wonder where the creativity has gone this season. Take a peek inside the treatment room and you’ll find almost enough creativity for 2 top premiership teams!

  51. From The Scotsman:

“What riled Wenger after the Stoke defeat was the accusation that his players lacked courage. His response, predictably and inaccurately depicted in the English press as the manager blowing his top, was an articulate argument that continuing to play adventurous and inventive football in the face of intimidation and reductive physicality, was the more courageous avenue to pursue”

Surpise, surprise, there is difference even between English media & Scottish media in presenting AW’s alleged moaning about physical approach of the opposition!

Please stop sucking into the predictably biased and skewed coverage of English media on all things Arsenal, especially AW moaning & whinging, and think for yourself! Don’t let those hacks insult your intelligence and hamper your independent thinking!

    http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/sport/Arsenal39s-Carling-Cup–kids.4697506.jp

  52. This is what so many fail to see isn’t it? Even with so many out and so many important players out we are still in touch at the top. We are doing well – this is the reality, and we can and I hope will, do better. The real benefit of the injury crisis is the vital experience the young players are getting which is yet another reason the future looks so bright.

  53. Big Al and Chris,
Agree with both of you. Last year we were in better shape on the injury front, because we were flying high early on, and it was really difficult for opposirion to foul us because of the high tempo passing. This time around I aggree with Chris that we would be on the first and second gear. But we’re getting there, an unbeaten run of 4-5 games would be a massive boost. And we can really push for the title, as players also start to come back.

  54. steww

I agree – it’s somehting of a miracle to be grinding out wins without cesc, Theo or Rosicky.

It’s toughening people like denilson up physically & mentally.

I still think we can get into the top 3 by the end of the season.

  55. if Arshavin comes where do you think he’ll play???

on the wings or behind the stirker coz Im not too sure about his best position????

Im very confident about the game tomorrow. Hull are now in freefall whereas we look much more solid

  56. Top two…

  57. Seems to me Arshavin would be perfect in the role Freddie used to play in the 4-5-1 we played in the CL on the way to the final.

He’s the guy nasri/cesc should be releasing behind the defence who squares it to RVP/Ade.

I’d also have him wide right in a 4-4-2 at home

  58. Attacking midfield….playing the ball down the channels for RvPs runs….

  59. …he has great vision and needs players to run off him…..he thinks quickly and he needs players around him who do the same…RvP, Carlos Vela, Eduardo, Cesc, Samire Nasri ….immediately spring to mind….he would give us many creative options….definitely an Arsenal player…hope he comes to the club….

  60. Of course we could go for the option most of the doomers go for…a f***ing great galumph of a defensive midfield player….instead….bit stupid though if you ask me…

  61. I think with Arshavin, we’d be one top quality keeper and one defensive midfielder away from being a title winning side.

  62. I thought we needed a dominatrix in central defence.

  63. Romford Pele

What is this title winning side you are chatting about, hate hearing that term. Did u think we was a title winning side last year by the way, because we did almost win the title didnt we??

Or is that impossible because no one labelled us a title winning side? Just dont get how you can associate that term in a logical way. Chelsea have a strong squad, does that make them have a title winning side?…. lol ok ill stop

What is wrong with our keeper anyway?? Almunia has lost a bit of confidence this season, but so has many of our players. At the moment its all under repair with good results, consistency in team selections is the key for me now. I cant see any better keeper around that is available anyway. Given looks good playing for Newcastle because he has approximately 10,000 shots flying at him every game. When we concede a goal it is always high profile. Just a bit unfair to me how every jumps on Almunia’s back who deserves his sopt.

  64. 3-0 to the Arsenal tomorrow… cant see Hull pulling off another surprise. Van Persie, Nasri, and Ade the scorers. I remember that game at the emirates very clearly all of a sudden, any1 got the match facts for the game. Think they had 2 shots and 2 goals? While of course we had alot more.

  65. ….nope no defesnive midfield player required….never had one…don’t need one…Vieira and Petit were both attacking midfielders who could defend and attack in equal measure….

  66. Ateeb et al..

I am just talking about the general scenario. I am not condoning eduardo’s tackle.

No matter how much we despise it, the fact is that it WILL continue. Lower teams dont have the technical skill to match us so they will try anything and everything to thwart us, no matter how much we rail against it.

They are there to try and win and they will use any method within the rules, whether we like it or not. So I am saying let take it on the chin and carry on.

I remember a few years ago when chelsea won the title, sam and bolton tried those tactics on them. But credit to chelsea, they descended into the mudfight at the reebok, it was a drag out brawl and I remember chelsea eventually emerging 2-0 winners in an atrocious game with hardly any chances.

The lower teams do it to all the teams above them that is their only resort because they cant compete technically against the top teams.

We cant pretend that they do it only to us, they do it to all the top teams. And the ones that cope the best with it usually emerge the champions

I am just saying we have to find a way to conquer it which we havent been able to do so far!

    Cheers!!

  67. But we have been able to conquer it!

    Cheers!!

  68. Naga

That is not the reason for us “not being able to do it so far”

By no means we have been pushed off any pitch this season. Our players are very athletic, slim yet strong built due to the strict dieting. You are once again reading into the papers a bit too much. The Arsenal i have seen this season hasnt shown that they are weak, you can blame injuries etc for us being 8 points off, just dont repeat what you hear in the papers.

  69. Papers say u cant win a title without experience = we almost did last season.

Papers report thousands of transfers = 80-90% dont go through.

Papers said we could never go unbeatan = Arsenal went unbeatan for a complete season

Papers report big signings needed to win title = Arsenal have ‘never ever’ bought big and i think Wenger has won a few titles!

Papers say we aint good enough = end of the season every1 will look at the table and see we are!!!

    Up the gunners!!

  70. Frank,

Petit and Paddy were world class. You can’t compare anyone in our midifeld except for Cesc with either of those.

  71. Does anyone have any thoughts about the impact of Man City spending £100 million on a player. It certainly signals intent but outside of on the pitch matters what will this do? No club or individual can compete with this sought of financial input. There has been a lot of talk about the Chelsea situation. There are rumours that Abramavich is looking to sell the club. Would an investor see Chelsea as a good investment, they don’t make any money and if Man City do what they want to they could dominate the PL for a long time to come. If he is not looking to sell what then? Chelsea might have been a fun toy when he was the richest kid in the playground but will he keep putting money in if he can’t buy the title.

  72. chrisGOONA…

I can understand your frustration. I agree with you we have improved on the department which we are talking about, in the last few years, but I do feel we need to step up another level to get there which I am hoping we will be able to do.

Its sad that you, whom I have had some great discussions in the past is accusing me of blindly following the papers.

Anyway, about the physical argument, yes it does play a part but I believe its more about mental strength and fortitude, which I hope the team will be able to develop soon.

My prediction 2-1 to arsenal (with the team displaying the qualities which I mentioned in the first post)

psst… Maybe its the lower teams who read those papers seriously….hmmm I wonder…

    Cheers!

  73. On another note does anyone have any thoughts on who will go down. I think that Stoke and WBA will go down but the other place is very open. I think that Blackburn will get out of it so that leaves the Spuds, Middlesbrough, Man City, Portsmouth and Sunderland. What happens to the Kaka deal if Man City go down?

  74. I don’t think Man. City will dominate anything. They’re doing nothing new. Real Madrid did exactly what City are doing now. They had some success, but never dominated. Chelsea were similar, but Mourinho was much shrewder than Hughes and Sheikh Yurbuls Andyadic. When Chelsea started buying famous names, their success vanished. Two years ago, I have little doubt that Shevchenko and Ballack would have been near the top of City’s shopping list.

  75. AIC, Manu Petit and Patrick Vieira were not considered to be world class when they joined Arsenal……and both were capable of making almost catastrophic defensive mistakes on their day…I think that we have players who are getting there including Diaby and Denilson…and Alex Song can win the ball, deliver a pass…and also tackle…Ramsey is not far away from really stamping his mark…as is Mark Randall…and of course Jack Wilshere…all are capable of winning the ball, passing, tackling…..and some have a fair degree of creativity especially Ramsey, Wilshere and Randall….add the creativity of Cesc, Nasri and possibly Arshavin….two of whom can also play on the wing and you have quite a stock of attacking and defensive talent in central midfield…naaah…no defensive midfielder required

  76. one of the great Arsene quotes ….. when asked by a journalist about Patrick Vieira questioning why Arsenal weren’t buying more world class players (sound familiar?)….. Arsene replied…. “well, Patrick wasn’t world class when he joined us….”

  77. I dont think kaka will join man city at any price, that would be career suicide. People forget that chelsea were already a UCL team when roman took over.

Milan may want to sell kaka for the huge price, but if the player doesnt want to go to city, then thats it. And I dont think he will want to.

I hope jay will keep WBA up! but they are strong candidates to go down alongwith I think stoke and sunderland.

Spud will survive unfortunately. I think harry will save them because he has enough decent players there.

But then at the same time life for us gooners just wouldnt be the same without them providing us the SEASONAL LAUGHS, would it??

We may not realize it, but I think we would actually miss them if they did go down!!

    Cheers all!!

  78. Peter Storeys Budgie

Congratulations on the most stupid post ever!!!!

Real Madrid had some sucess but never dominated.Have you been living on the moon all your life.Real Madrid are the most successful european club ever.Never dominated youre having a laugh

  79. The Galactico team went three seasons without a major trophy. Let’s examine some of your previous posts to discover whether you think that counts as success.

  80. I’m with Poli…. in the context of ManCity buying Kaka I think the Madrid Galactico era is a perfect example of how buying all the big names does not guarantee success.

  81. I must admit, PSB, that when you describe one of my posts as stupid, I have to pay careful attention. I have some sympathy with the maker’s knowledge tradition, according to which a man can only truly understand what he can produce himself. Time and again, you have demonstrated the ease with which you can produce a post of mind-boggling stupidity; so I presume you understand as well as anyone the various inane components that together form a stupid post. I therefore await the display of dialectical duncery that will demonstrate that a team without trophies can still be said to dominate.

  82. yep…..a diabolical display of dialectical duncery demonstrated

  83. PSB…ask AIC to poke your piles back in….you will feel better…he is just behind you…as always

  84. I don’t suppose that will improve AIC’s mood.

  85. Anybody remember the suggestion that, given the speculation about Liverpool’s financial health, it would be interesting to see whether Benitez would sign a new contract.

Well, I see that he has not. Even the ‘Pool will not give that manic shopper the keys to the (empty) strongbox.

    He will be off.

  86. Good Afternoon G4E

  87. …he should be just as relieved as PSB….and bye bye Rafa

  88. Fiddling with a haemorrhoidal anus doesn’t appeal to me.

  89. …it might if it was your own…

  90. Maybe – although I seldom fiddle with my non-haemorrhoidal anus. It’s out of sight, out of mind, as far as I’m concerned.

  91. Apparently, what my Mum told me, that sitting on a cold step can give you piles is not true.

  92. Agree re@ Benitez. Looks like Liverpool are about to do there usual falling off a cliff. They are really going to be in trouble if they can’t re-finance the £350 million loan in the summer.

  93. Hi C.BoB…Hello all…Sorry, I’m having a busy day at work :)

  94. http://www.ilgiornale.it/la_s.pic1?SID=15

But I can’t get on Arabian Business – server must be down.

  95. It’s getting too personal and touchy feely around here…Hemorrhoids ffs? :)

  96. It’s a Berlusconi paper, so I’m sure they’d be aware themselves if he’d signed or not.

    Che cazzo, eh!

  97. ….quite difficult to get empirical evidence on the cold step as a causative agent I would think….

  98. Personally G4E the last thing I’m going to do with someone who has hemorrhoids is get touchy & feely.

  99. …a paper made from pasta?…still I suppose if you can have rice paper…why not!

  100. Strange – I read it just before but it’s gone now..

  101. You can thank a world full of horrified onlookers!

  102. Am with you on that one Marc…let’s leave the Hemorrhoids where they are, wherever thay are.

A week is freaking too long between games.

  103. D & G INDEX – Medium High

  104. There’s only one place for haemorrhoids, so far as I know.

  105. We could give every post a D&G rating. At the end of each month, we calculate everyone’s average score, and send the doomiest & gloomiest for a session with a psychiatrist. Get them moving along the Royal Road to the genital personality, or whatever psychiatrists do these days.

  106. excellent idea Poliziano

    banish them to The Causeway

  107. So, you think the scientists are wrong and my mum might have been right?

  108. Nope…The Priory, Muppet…or the Tavistock Centre….

  109. F. Frederick Skitty

Unbeaten in the league until then end of the season would be just the tonic. If we can just get into the habit of keeping clean sheets, we could really be motoring by the end of the season, which could provide a wonderful platform for next season. Kolo and JD have an amazing opportunity to cement their places and become the top pairing and the bedrock of our renaissance.

Hopefully we’ve now filled our quota of defeats, injuries and avoidable goals against and we can now really push on.

Clean sheet tomorrow please, and an RVP masterpiece.

  110. Ah yes Frank… thanks.

  111. ffs, absolutely right….what a star you are….still in with a chance this season too

  112. Don’t know about you lot but I get a bit gloomy only when it is mathematically impossible for us to achieve the last of our targets. Usually only a few games to go sometimes on the last day. That target changes, one season it was unbelievably finishing above the spuds others like last year it was winning the title. Then once the gloom passes (about a day) I enjoy the last few games as a pressure free footy fest.
Can you imagine starting the season gloomy and miserable like these few poor bastards we have to tolerate here. Jesus.

  113. F. Frederick Skitty

“Can you imagine starting the season gloomy and miserable like these few poor bastards we have to tolerate here. Jesus.”

Steww, the amazing thing is that they seem to think the positive people are the ones to be tolerated. They never seem to ask themselves what it is that this great site offers them.

  114. Frank,

Why are you so preoccupied with arses? Piles, arse whistles. Its just drivel.

  115. steww,

I take it that I am one of the “miserable bastards” you have to tolerate.

How about realistic as opposed to miserable. Unless, of course, the reality is miserable.

  116. Not really. More PSB and Howard. You do ally yourself to them but unlike them you try to reason. ‘Fraid I don’t agree with much of what you say but that’s life.

  117. AIC,

    What ups man?

I fear that many of us are still looking at the beginning of the season without realizing that we are in a great position in the PL and that while not winning with the usual skill and class we are not loosing and this with half of the team injured.

We have complained about not being able to grind out and result (no plan b) and we are doing it but yet many are still complaining, what to do? The media is the biggest culprit, but we should not look to the media at all.

I dont know about you but after how we played against Hull and Fulham, I am ecstatic at the way our players are fighting and not taking anything for granted. Add that to the fluidity that is on its way back along with the confidence and it is a recipe for great success!

FFS, I honestly see an unbeaten run and do think that Arsenal will shock the world this year.

All the talent is here, lets get healthy, fulfill our potential and shut a whole lot of people up!

Big Ups to Arsenal – Class!

    Be Blessed!!

  118. …I think that miserable is about right…and not realistic at all…perhaps even a little deluded…

  119. I guess some people just think they are right, they know better, they are smarter, and no matter how you explain to them that they are more of a doom mongers, they just don’t see it….because they believe they are never wrong.

Good luck to you, you will always look miserable to us….realistic to your delusional self.

Those people you walk buy in the morning, you say Hi to them and they never respond. I call them “Miserable Faces”.

  120. -buy
    +by

  121. Well they say “Misery loves company” you know. So its really not about the situation but its them themselves who are miserable and try to force everyone else to feel the same.

In other words the sky is always gonna fall to someone who only sees the bad in things.

Come on AIC! Get back to being positive (you were for a while) – you can do it – its in there somewhere!

    Be Good!

  122. Those teeth would cause me to be miserable too!

  123. Look at Frank’s teeth, he’s all happy and positive…singing his Arsenal songs…no matter how cold it is……or no matter how the going gets tough….

    RVP….Click..Click..Click…
    RVP….Click..Click..Click…
    RVP….Click..Click..Click…

  124. You are of course completely correct in your assessment, G4E….and tomorrow we will win again….8 games without defeat…oh yes…1-0 will do fine…17.30 GMT…Greenwich..London…next to Woolwich…the birthplace of Arsenal….we will be playing Hull a place near Kingston…and we will win…because RvP and his compadres will not let it be otherwise…I suspect we may see a little more panace tomorrow…oh yes…..why?..because we aaaaarrrreeeee….. hip…we are cool …we are Arsenal and we rule…lalalalaaah…lalalaaaah…lalaaaaaah….clickclickclick

  125. “…If he is to join, he will do so when the time is right for all parties and that includes the signing of any replacement by Zenit… ”

Zenit bought Arshavin’s replacement, Danny, last summer. He scored the winning goal againt Man U in the European Super Cup.

  126. Hull away plus Manucho today should be entertaining , barring bad weather. We should nick it either 2-1 or 3-1, with goals from Ade, Eboue* & Vela.

I’m excited about next week as I expect the Arshavin deal to be wrapped up (14mill). The prospect of having Fabregas, Nasri, Arshavin, Eduardo, and the ghost of Rosicky together (even if its for 4 games) just makes my mouth water (as I know it does all Gunner voyeurs)!

We’ll prob end up 3rd but I hope we win something this year, FA cup or CL or both.

Gallas should come back refreshed. Kolo regains his form. Ditto Diaby. Add improvements from Diaby, Vela, Djourou & Eboue and yeah we should reclaim our most entertaining-team-in-Europe tag (Yes:Barca without Messi aren’t as attractive)

    IN ARSENE we depend.
May the force & good luck be with us.
    GUNNERS FOR LIFE!!!!!!

  127. *ps: I think/hope if Eboue scores one of those goal-of-the-month type goals, the gates would stay open. His confidence will soar and he’ll become a terror for opposing defences.
