DB10 On Coaching But No Comfy Sofa For Him

Morning Troops, it is a long week indeed when there are no games to talk about. Still on we go with the meander through footballing life.

Dennis Bergkamp is grabbing the headlines and forging his way into a million dreams with his comments on Arsenal TV that had been widely reported in the media:

I wouldn’t rule out [working at Arsenal in some capacity]

Much is often made of players who have been under the spell of the Dark Side of football and how they are the future of English management, compared to Wenger’s players who have shown little inclination to enter the insecure world of being ‘The Gaffer‘. Sadly for this media, more of Ferguson’s former charges are proving to be Fred Moffat’s than they are Alf Ramsey’s. Hardly a ringing endorsement of the Sith Lord’s abilities in this respect.

Of the same generation, former Arsenal players seem to head more into the coaching side of things or at least steering clear of managing. Certainly as far as the English game is concerned, only Merson, Platt and Adams have taken on the top jobs; the jury’s verdict on the former pair is not favourable and the latter, well, they are still out on Big Tone and how he will be seen. My suspicion is that he will be lucky to be in the Portsmouth job at the end of the season given the inability of any chairman to put up with even the mildest form of pain, in footballing time.

That former Wenger players move more readily into the technical side of the game is perhaps reflective of the managerial styles, or at least public perceptions of Wenger and Ferguson. The latter is very much an ‘old school’ manager whilst Wenger the ‘new breed’ in terms of English football. Personally, I find Ferguson, Allardyce, Redknapp and their ilk to be archaic, like the dinosaurs heading for extinction.Little wonder that the Football Association choose to look abroad for the head coaches for the national team.

Bergkamp observed that native players here are adapting:

I think when I first came it was a case that [there was a lack of technical ability]. Then a lot of foreign players came in and probably improved the game. Now I feel that there are foreign players who are coming in who aren’t improving the game because you’ve got English players who are technically better. It has changed. If you only look at Arsenal for example, you have 16-year-olds with fantastic technique who came through the system so you must be doing something right.

Perhaps English managers need to learn some new tricks as well. That said, the chairmen have not helped the situation, living up to Len Shackleton’s blank page in his autobiography summing up what directors know about football. There is, of course, little incentive for the modern footballer to stay in the game once their career on the pitch is over. Unlike their predecessors, they are financially secure and with chairmen acting dementedly once a struggle beckons, why should they put anything into taking a top job?

More so, the comfort of the pundit’s sofa in the plethora of newsrooms and studios that the media attention on the game demands, means that they get to take cheap shots, say nothing or little of note and disappear off to the golf course and the 19th hole at their leisure. Why bother with stress when you can be destructive and have no responsibilities once the transmission light switches off?

  1. “Why bother with stress when you can be destructive and have no responsibilities once the transmission light switches off?”

Because you get a £3m pay off even if you’ve only been in the job 5 minutes…

  2. Imagine if Dennis managed as well as he played? The end of the Wenger era wouldn’t be such a terrifying prospect.

  3. I often have conversations about what I see as the lack of quality in English players, and what many see as the relegation of English players by evil Premiership managers.

The funny thing is that I share the underlying sentiment. I would love to see technically gifted English players. I so deeply want our English Arsenal kids to do well, to be clearly better than the foreigners.

But I think the difference between me and some is that I think it’s clear that English players somehow haven’t had a good enough technical level.

I think all the talk about English spine and the mental strength and all that is a concession of quality.

“We’re crap but we’ll scrap”. I want English players to outplay and outfight the opposition.

And I just hate the way that average English players are hyped above their station. The worst thing that can happen to a developing player is for the world to tell him he’s already top quality when he still has a lot to learn.

  4. DB10 is a very clever man….he knows the importance of learning, he has supportive, influential friends, he is very diplomatic and he keeps his options open….the most important asset to him as a player was his intelligence, and that will serve him very well as a manager.

  5. F. Frederick Skitty

    Good points YW,

I guess Bergkamp’s fear of flying is bound to impose some limitations on his suitability as a manager though.

I’d never reflected on how this Sky Sports / Premiership / media overload might actually impact upon the quality of coaching too. I guess football will still be enjoyable without the very best managers, but it might further affect the National team.

It’s a shame we’ll never get to see just what great managers Alan Hansen and Jamie Redknapp would have made.

  6. Excellent, ffs

  7. ffs for fug sake

  8. awight fwank?

  9. Yep…you?

  10. is kaka really going to man city .. ??? or is it a joke ?

  11. yee wish Bergkamp didnt have the fear of flying crap.. Would be an amazing manager for us, with his intelligence he can manipulate our players into playing the best footy in the world once again without fear.. haha

  12. A little bird tells me Arshavin is in the country… could be complete bull tho…

  13. … ignore the last comment… It is complete bull…

    Grrr…

  14. just AW re-iterating that he’s hopeful of signing…

  15. Peter Storeys Budgie

We will wait to the very last minute on deadline day then lose out on Arshavin because we wont raise our offer by £5m and miss out on him like we did with Alonso. We are so preditable

  16. Peter Storeys:
Are you implying that £5 million is not worth fighting for?

  17. Technical ability is essential for a football player. I think the new crop of youth in England are going to offer the technical excellence that we see from the best foriegners. Our young Jack is the cutting edge of this new group of players who are technical and very much aware. Arsenal fans can be proud that our system developed Jack.

  18. A skilfull, intelligent player is not a lock to be a good manager. From in other sports I have seen where great players have made the worst managers.

As far as Arshavin – I feel its just a matter of time and I dont think Arsenal should be forced to overpay but neither should they be too frugal.

I believe this deal is a just a matter of time.

  19. Peter Storeys Budgie

    William

For £2m more we could have bought Alonso.Sometimes you have to pay a little over the odds to get the player you want.Man Utd offered £25m for Berbatov yet Spurs held out for £32m.Man Utd still bought him

If Arshavin helps us finish in the top 4,£5m will be a drop in the ocean

  20. It will take a complete revolution in the thinking of English football lovers (FA, Team Ownners, Managers, Fans, etc) for the home grown players to be fu

The problem is with do you try to train your players in a more technical way and try to replicate that in the matches against the obvious better teams at the risk of getting clobbered or do we park the bus and try to get a nil all draw. Teams in the PL are afraid to get relegated so would prefer that, I think. I believe the financial aspect of it all is going hinder the players from playing more skilfull because from what I see the managing styles or not wanting to get beat or relegated will restrict the players from expressing themselves in the field. A lot of fear in this money governed sport.

For this I wish Reading was stil in the PL, from what I remember, they always tried to play ball.

  21. Just because he was a great player and is perceived to be intelligent doesnt necessarily mean Denzil would be any good as a coach.

I think players should go down the leagues and learn to manage there before being given a go at a top club.

  22. Forget the first paragraph – dont even remember what I was going to say – oh boy!

  23. As William suggests, if the difference in estimates is that large and cannot be reconciled, then signing Arshavin – a 27-year-old – becomes a big gamble. It can’t be called “penny-pinching” when you’re talking about millions of pounds in a recession.

Just watching the highlights from the youth cup game against Wolves. I get goosebumps when Wilshere’s on the ball. He was marked like crazy, but usually managed to keep possession.

It’s scary – you can see how good he could turn out to be, but in the very same game Rhys Murphy got clattered and looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. It looks like a delicate balance at that age – one setback can chronically affect their development.

I know we all want to see him sooner, but the more experience Jack gets at dodging challenges on the smaller stage the better. I’d have a heart attack if we started him against Blackburn, Stoke, Hull, Bolton, Fulham, Man U and any of the other sides that enjoy assaulting our players.

  24. I can’t help but laugh when “Money Happy Lose Hands” here talk about 10s of millions like it’s Pennies.

What’s a 5 million, I pay that to buy a pack of smokes! Right Romford?
    ===

I personally think Arshavin is 12 million pounds tops, if they don’t accept it…fcuk them.

    ===

DB10 would be great, but I think he still has a long way to go experience-wise as a manager. As many said earlier his fear of flying will be a handicap, would he stay behind for a CL game in Russia? I think he would be great in the Academy to teach “Football Class” our young lads.

  25. PSB,

I agree with you. I am fed up with us missing out on targets for the sake of a couple or even a few million.

If he helps us get 4th or turn our season around its money well spent.

Sometimes you have to pay over the odds to get what you want.

  26. PSB doesnt need to wait till the end of the transfer window to know what happens. His amazing powers of foresight means he already ‘knows’. He is not predictable from any angle.

  27. G4E,

£ 2 or even £5m is not a lot of money in the context of big clubs in the modern game. £2m is Jermain Pennant’s wages for a year.

I am not saying we should be like Sperz and overpay everytime but we need a boost now or our season could collapse in a matter of days – like last year or the year before.

5m is a fortune for us but it is not us who it relates to.

  28. £2m sorry

  29. Hi Peter, AIC

Piles bothering you both today? I reckon you must be a pair of conjoined twins….joined at the arse.

  30. Frank,

Do you have anything football related to say. If not, why bother?

  31. No business can operate by throwing away £2 million here, £5 million there. Wenger assesses the value of a player according to the price at which he can obtain other players of comparable ability. If he spends £5 million too much on one player, he is just sacrificing his opportunity to buy a better player.

  32. You think that your comments are football related, AIC? You just seem to enjoy having a dig at the club.

  33. Give it a rest PSB and AIC. We might even sign the man for what Arsene believes he is worth.

What do you reckon? Wait and see or slag off Arsene now before he’s even made a decision?

This may come as a surprise but Arsene Wenger is one of the best managers in the world. Experienced coaches from all over the world pay homage to the man’s ability and knowledge.

Do you think he might know the value of a player better than you do.

Mark Hughes would agree with you. I’ve just heard him say that Kaka is worth whatever they pay for him. If I was Milan, I’d add another 10 million to the price, no, what the heck 20 Million. After all, he’s worth it. Mark Hughes says so.

  34. On the plus side (compared with the summer) is we have a CEO in place to do the flippin’ negotiating. Get stuck in Ivan.

  35. Man City, Hughes, seem silly.

Trying to become a big club overnight.

  36. I think we have 3 world class talents coming up. Wilshere, Vela and Coquelin. Those kids are sheer “rub your hands with glee” class…..

Wilshere….the balance, the vision, the pace, the strength, and above all, nothing fazes him.

Vela…perfect touch, cleverness, almost complete from a technical point of view though he has to work on his right foot…

Coquelin, tackles for breakfast. I don’t think we’ve ever had a tackler that good. Great engine, can dribble, has pace and can pass.

Genius, to me, makes every thing look easy. That’s what you see from these three lads. It’s almost casual, almost effortless.

I also like Jay Simpson, who looks like a very determined young man, who’ll succeed on pluck. I like Gibbs who often looks like he can develop into a completely different player.

What I like most about the kids we have now is the attitude. Good, clean, plucky kids who would wear the shirt with pride.

But I guess I have to acknowledge most of them won’t make it at Arsenal. But the ones who do will be special.

  37. …and Aaron Ramsey

  38. ….and Henri Lansbury

  39. There is no slagging off re Arshavin. If AW rates him then I would prefer to pay a bit more and get him.

I am not saying we shouldn’t negotiate but if we offer say 12 and they want 15 or nothing, personally I would buy him.

If he’s that good and he helps us win things then he will be worth it.

Arsenal are here to win trophies as well as run the club in a prudent manner. Sometimes the first objective needs to be prioritised as opposed to the second one which seems dominant.

  40. ….and Mark Randall

  41. ….and Fran Merida

  42. …..and Nacer Barazite

  43. ….and Harvard Nordveit

  44. Tosh, AIC….utter balderdash

  45. Well AIC, if Wenger rates him at 12 Million and his club wants 15 million…why would we pay it if Wenger thinks he is only worth 12? Something is wrong with your logic.

  46. Well done, G4E…that is what I meant to say….

  47. ….it can’t be easy for him to concentrate though with PSB waggling around behind him, stuck to his arse…so give him a break

  48. AIC,

Let’s stop pinching pennies. Let’s go get Kaka for £91M.

  49. Ok Frank, I just don’t suffer AICs with Waggling PSBs so easily…I will try though.
    ===
Furthermore Ole Gunner, let’s sell 11 players to buy Kaka…With some fans logic, he can win us the title on his own. We can play 1 against 11, I hope he is good at defending.

  50. that tete de bit adrian durham was saying earlier that wenger is jealous of man city and mark hughes,he is always slagging arsene.

  51. I keep railing against the media but here-s a new low for them:

Even the great Times of London invented a Moldovan player, and invented a link to Arsenal. The Guardian is calling them out on it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/jan/15/masal-bugduv-moldova-hoax-player

The Times had a list of the world’s best 50 kid players. This fictional guy was #30. Guess what, it has been scrubbed off their website: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/european~sep~football/article5502827.ece

Just another low reached for the brain-dead football media but it’s just 6PM and the day is not over yet.

    What a bunch of tossers!

  54. If a car is for sale for £15,000 and you offer £12,000 the owner can say no, you then negotiate you do not pay the £15,000 straight away.

  55. Negotiation is all very well but in the end if the player is good enough then 2-3m is insignificant.

Alternatively we can do what we have been doing for the last 4 years lose world-class players, replace them from within the squad or by unproven players who are not ready and win f*** all. This “promoting from within” is an euphemism for another failed transfer move.

World-class players can’t be bought on the cheap all the time.

  56. A players value is relative. What if Arshavin is a major factor in us winning the league next year. £3 million will look like peanuts. We offered £7.5 million for Ronaldo, ManU paid £15 million. They gazumped us. Now they would have been better off offering £10 million and saving a few quid but I doubt that any ManU fans are complaining. Also if we don’t get Arshaving what will the alternative cost us?

  57. Yes, we had a lucky escape there.

  58. I keep railing against the media but here’s a new low for them:

  59. Marc,

What if Arshavin got his leg broken in his 3rd week in England and that ended his career? Then 15 million quid would look like an albatross.

  60. plus the £15m in wages in his contract over 4 years.

  61. Ole Gunner, I thought clubs took out insurance against such things. Ultimately players are assets on the company books, all businesses insure there assets.

  62. Marc and AIC,
I hope you’re not incharge of anything finance or economics related where ever you’re working. And I’d suggest that you let your Mrs handle the finances at home as well. Or else it won’t be too long that you’d end up on the street, with that illogical brain of yours. Stay away from financial activity I would suggest. Put ur money in a bank, and enjoy the interest payments.

If someone is worth 12m you get him for 12m or less.

Marc, and how do you think MANU buying Nani for 17m turned out?
    or Anderson of late too?

  63. Is their insurance against a player failing to make it in the EPL after spending 15 million on him?

What if Arshavin turned out to be a lemon, then all you mongering fans would ask for the manager’s head for wasting the money, same as you’re now for not spending like an idiot?

  64. - their
    + there

  65. Ateeb,
I fear your advice has come four months too late.

  66. In football we have ideas we don’t apply to our personal lives. We’re talking of millions here. 3 million quid is what we pay Fabregas is one year.

Would you pay £15k for a 12k car?

  67. Ateeb – My comments were made as an observation of player values. I haven’t seen enough of Arshavin to know if he is worth £15 or £15 million I was trying to make the point that some times you have to speculate to accumilate. I am in no way inferring chucking money around, just look at the spuds. Wenger seems keen on this player and his judgement has been pretty good over the years, if it could make the difference between 4th place or 5th then the extra £3 million would be money well spent. If there is a player available as good for the same or less then lets go and get them.

G4E – There are no guarantees in life and I trust Wengers judgement on players abilities.

  68. There is a difference between a manager who cares about the club’s future, and a manager who cares about himself.

    Examples:

Mouninho, he spent millions of Vichi’s money and he couldn’t care less about anything happens to the club after he is gone.

Fergie, he also spends way over the odds and the club’s owners are in huge debt…Do you think he cares what happen to Man Ure after he is gone….I think not, he only cares about his legacy.

My question is, why Wenger is taking all this crap from these pathetic fans? If he really didn’t care about the club’s future, he would spend money he doesn’t have…but he is not, I love You Arsene Wenger….You’re a decent man.

  69. Oh f***ing hell…

  70. G4E – Didn’t David Dein used to do the player/price negotiations. Obviously Wenger identified the targets and was aware of transfer budgets. Did Dein, when the need was necessary up the bid for the right player?

This is in no way a suggestion that Dein should return to the club, but maybe we neede the new guy in a little sooner.

  71. Never had a chance to see what Coquelin is capable of, probably have to wait for next season and Carling Cup games, I hope Ole Gunner’s observation is right, we need that kind of player, for Wilshere and Vela it’s obvious that in a few years they will be world class players.

  72. Taribo, I have seen Coguelin a few times in reserve games and he is a very good player. He tackles hard and fair and nearly always wins the ball. He can also play in different positions.

  73. THIS MISERLY STANCE HAS GOT TO STOP WE SHOULD BE IN FOR KAKA OR MASSA NOT A COAL MINER FROM SIBERIA WHAT AN ABSOLUTE FARCE WE SUPPOSED TO BE A TOP EUROPEAN SIDE BUT WE CANT AFFORD A PEANUT FOR A MIDGET

  74. What some seem to miss when they advocate overspending like Manure and chelski and now citeh is that we do things differently and we don’t EVER want to be like them. It’s what has made our success so sweet. The unearthed gems, the prospect of promoting from within these are the things which mark us out and thanks to Mr Wenger we can take such a pride in our magnificent club where others can just throw money around.
Why would anyone want us to be like those other teams? We’re different, we’re special and some of us love supporting Arsenal in 1st 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th place.

  75. HAHA Muppet!!!

You’re a star!!! MASSA made it funnier!

  76. Every time I’ve seen Coquelin I’ve been impressed. The first time I saw him was in pre-season. I thought; who is that?!

What impresses me with his tackling is how clean it is. Effortless really is the word. Hope he builds enough of an alright game to make him an actual world class player.

What I’ve seen happen with kids when they’re very good at one facet of their game is that because they’re so good with that one thing, they get by at youth level without having to develop everything else.

On the other hand I hope that natural ability is not coached out of him.

  77. Marc,

I totally agree. I am surprised that I find anyone I can agree with on this blog these days.

Ferguson “overpaid” for Horse Face and Rio which didn’t turn out too badly. Benitez was thought to have “overpaid” for Torres who we could have replaced Henry with.

  78. Coquelin was one of the those rare players where you thought, why don’t they all do that, I mean, charge at the player and get the ball so easily. The guy seem to have phenomenal energy and speed, Flamini on Amphetamines if you will.

  79. I agree Ateeb, it’s basic business to try to negotiate the best price you can. Reading between the lines, I don’t think Arsenal are unwilling to come close to Zenit’s valuation, they are just looking to hedge their investment by not paying all the money up front. If Zenit really believe Arshavin will prove to be worth £20m they should be willing to accept part payment now with further payments linked to appearances and performances. This is not an uncommon deal. We had a similarly structured deal with Reyes, and when he failed to settle here, the risk was shared. How would we have felt if we’d paid the reputed £17m up front for him and then sold him at a loss later? Perhaps Zenit are not willing to take a risk on Arshavin settling in the PL.

As I see it Arsenal are not doing anything different to what any reasonable club would do. Allegedly Barcelona were interested in Arshavin last summer but at £12m (which is reportedly the price they paid for Hleb). Even money-bags spurs wouldn’t pay the £24m Zenit were looking for. Arshavin is reportedly desperate to leave Zenit, so I would say the buying club are in a strong position and should try to get the best price they can. That is probably why Arsene is also emphasizing the quality of players he already has so that Zenit don’t run away with the idea that we are desperate and will pay whatever they ask.

  80. Passenal,

I am not saying that AW should not negotiate but ultimately if it is a straight choice between missing out or paying an extra £3m I would buy Arshavin.

  81. I agree about the potential of Coquelin. I’ve also watched him a few times for the reserves in midfield and at right back. Tenacious is the word I would use to describe him. His tackling is good and I’ve seen him drive into the box to set up others, as well as scoring from outside the box – he has a wicked shot on him.

  82. Watching the press conference, Wenger seems in a good mood. Doesn’t usually smile so much when facing the press!

Anyway, he was asked “what would you do with £100 million?”. What kind of question is that? Rightly, Wenger replies along the lines of “i don’t sit at home thinking about what i would do with 100 million, i sit at home thinking about football and how we’re going to win the next game”. Awesome reply, sums it all up really. Some people go to see a game now and just see bank notes with different numeric values on them running around a pitch. Where’s the love for the sport in that? In the mind of the average Abromavitchian-football fan, football is now 50% soap opera, 45% stock market and 5% football.

  83. I am just very excited about watching us beat a side with Kaka in it…again….on 4th April….what a day that is going to be…Arshavin or no Arshavin.

I agree with Ateeb and Passenal…

  84. AIC – Arsene and the board are the only ones in a position to decide whether that extra £3m is worth it. We cannot possibly say from outside the situation. We can only surmise based on media reports, which have more chance of being inaccurate than accurate and therefore would skew our view of the situation.

  85. ….and Blackstock

  86. …and Passenal again

  87. I agree with Frank

  88. …Henri Lansbury looked very good against Wolves…I would like to see him succeed after his illness….great heart.

  89. ….and Muppet

  90. F. Frederick Skitty

I try not to get sucked in to transfer fever, but I am now certain Arshavin will sign for us.

We are the ARSenal and we have ARSene Wenger our greatest ever manager. Maybe ARShavin can become our greatest ever player. They can’t help but come, it’s subliminal, it’s the call of the ARSe.

  91. …uuuurrrrgghhhh, ffs

  92. F.

I was thinking the same thing. Here’s hoping.

  93. I’ve got high hopes for Lansbury. Always striked me as a player with huge potential and good leadership qualities. He ain’t exactly short on confidence either, I remember in an interview him saying he expects to be captaining Arsenal and England in 5 years time! :)

  94. ffs, its obvious isn’t it? ….AIC and PSB have only one arse between them….I would be grumpy as hell if I had to share an arse.

  95. F. Frederick Skitty

Do they flip a coin over who gets to lick it?

  96. I`d love to see Arshavin come to us & succeed.

He looks like a typical Arsenal player who would improve the squad , especially with our current injury situation.

If he does come I hope people don`t expect us to waltz past Villa & get 4th spot automatically.

As AW has said before, it very often takes at least 6 months for players to hit their stride when they come to the EPL.

I really like the sound of Coquelin. We`ve missed a tackler since PV4 left the club. How far away from the first team is he ?

  97. I find it hard to imagine that, Frank. Are they back-to-back? In that case, would they have an arse at all?

  98. Two arses in one under pants?

  99. I agree, Paulie. We won’t even beat Villa by waltzing. Being much better at football should see us through.

  100. Maybe their arses and mouths are connected… would explain why they chat so much shit

  101. How can an ice cream share an arse with a budgie?

  102. Agreed Frank. If Arshavin comes he could be a bonus, but if he doesn’t we’ll just get on with it. Paying £100m for Kaka guarantees nothing. His presence in the AC Milan team last season did not help them qualify for the CL and he was surrounded by other quality players in that team.

  103. Yes it is difficult to imagine being joined at the arse…..if you model it in plasticine it helps with the 3D imagery.

  104. I think I will NOT try to imagine that Frank.

  105. If they are front-to-front, surely they have two arses.

Front-to-back doesn’t bear thinking about, and doesn’t really count as being conjoined anyway.

  106. Fantastic watching these players though, Passenal, isn’t it?…what amazes me is that some of these guys are thinking of giving up their season tickets….

  107. Frank,

I think i didnt make meself clear earlier. when i said salary cap i meant for the premiership not for arsenal.

  108. Tha’s right, Pz…you can’t be temporarily conjoined….no..it has to be back-to-back…incidentally it is becoming such a common phenomenon that IKEA do a special extra large, side-by side toilet…with a matching toilet roll holder each side…of course you have to sort out the right hand/left hand thing beforehand…but ..you know…with practice…

  109. I don’t think a salary cap is good, even if it applied to the whole of Europe, as it would have to do.

A limit on the size of squads might be worth considering, as Doctor Diesel might start buying up players just so other teams can’t have them.

  110. Thought so, Dg…what about Europe?

  111. Paulie Walnuts,

From the account of J. Sanderson on the excellent Young Guns

“Coquelin an explosive defensive midfielder, blessed with a fantastic range of passing and all the combative qualities you would expect from a holding player. Many have likened Francis to French Internationals Claude Makélélé and Lassana Diarra, for their rugged, strong, and powerful approach.”

it seems likely that Coquelin must be near to a squad place. Perhaps the problem is that Ramsey is in front of him. He’s 18 in May. Perhaps he will go on loan next season.

  112. 500k a week for Kaka…

I’d pay 500 quid a week if I had it to spare to play for Arsenal….

If you earn 500k a week when the league average is more like 50k, you better score a hat trick every week.

I think it can destroy a man. The pressure. He can’t have indifferent games any more.

  113. well the more players get paid the more tickets will go up surely, goes hand in hand doesnt it.

and if we get arshavin for a new transfer record, will he then be under pressure to be one of the best ever arsenal players?? big fukin ask!!

  114. Every business sells its products at the prices that maximise its profits. In the case of a football club, the purchase of one player is unlikely to have a significant effect on the optimum ticket price.

  115. PZ, if that player is supposed to be on half million pounds a week who knows what ticket prices may be. I expect some citeh fans are a bit worried about that.

  116. Man. City will be doubling their number of good players, so in their case ticket prices might rise. If we buy Arshavin, though, it is merely a drop in the ocean of our talent.

  117. Poliziano,

I take the point about Citeh but not about us. If Arshavin is as good as AW thinks he is he could be a huge influence on the team. He can keep possession like the departed Hleb and can also score goals.

  118. I hope that whoever Wenger buys will make a great contribution to the team, but it is impossible that any single player could add as much to the prestige of Arsenal as Kaka could add to City.

  119. POliziano,

why is it not a good idea to introduce a salary cap??

  120. I only said I don’t think it is good.

  121. Thanks Muppet

  122. ok why do you think it is not a good idea? because surely it will mean players can no longer bleed the clubs dry with higher and higher demands, agents can no longer hold out for more fees, fairer competition for the aquisition of players. it has to be a good thing.

but the reason it wont come in is because the people that can make the decision will lose out financially. they are all in it together to bleed fans of as much money as they can.

  123. The way the media is going on about the Kaka transfer issue, it seems a deal might atcually come in place. Would be great though, I’d love to watch Kaka play every week in the PL. But don’t know where city is going with this whole thing. Robinhio, Ireland, SWP, and add a couple more players, that would make into the teams of the top four. And it’s not just 11 good players that they need. They need a whole squad, atleast 14-15 really good players. And they’re pretty far from that point. So if they’re spending 100m on Kaka, they’re just inflating the price of whatever player they are going to get in the future. Even if they don’t they still will have to spend 200-300m on players over the next couple of seasons. Would be interesting to watch where they are going on with that. If I were in their place, I’d just get Wenger and let him build a really competetive team with 1/8 the money that Hughes is looking likely to spend.

However it affects us the way they are doing business. Inflating prices of players, just as Chelsea did. And how illogical and crazy fans and media are these days, they see Man City spending 100m on Kaka, and on the other hand they see Wenger not willing to give up that extra 3m for Ashravin. Taking them to the conclusion that Wenger is crazy. Whatever and however you think of a football club, at the end of the day its existence rely primarily on how it does business. And anyone with the slightest business acumen, can spot that there is no better club out there than Arsenal!! And offcourse no better manager as well.

  124. And I forgot, no better team than Arsenal when it comes to playing pretty football. And the best Young Squad, and the youngest first team who would only get better. And RVP, Cesc, Nasri, Vela, Denilson, CLichy, walcott, Ade, Rosicky and………………………………..you know the rest. So stop whining!!!! Hope for an injury less season for our team. That’s all we need. Or atleast better luck on that front.

  125. What a star you are, Ateeb

  126. If a club doesn’t like a player’s wage demands, it can say no. The players might be greedy, but no more so than others in the business. The players have as good a claim to the money as anyone else. The source of the greed, in my opinion, is the clubs themselves. Many of them want more success than they have any right to hope for. They therefore take financial risks that mean they can no longer cope with the normal uncertainty of sport.

  127. I’d love to see a top club go bankrupt – preferably united. That would do a lot to rationalise expectations in football.

  128. didnt a top club go bankrupt……… oh no it was leeds wasnt it.

  129. I want it to be united!

  130. Agree with Poliziano. United and the over rated ferguson.

  131. When funguson leaves it will be the rat leaving the sinking ship. I think Chel$ki will be the first to go under.

  132. Poli – I really don’t think that City signing Kaka adds any kind of “prestige” to the club. If anything they are becoming a laughing stock, buying assets at overpriced rates when the rest of the world is in total financial disarray. Kaka is going to City for one reason – money. He will have all sorts of stupid clauses in his contract that he can demand from the arabs that no-one else would dream of allowing.

And at the same time they are still in for Craig Bellamy and West Ham are telling them where to go. You couldn’t make this up.

And in the real world Banks and other financial institutions and corporates are on their knees and begging governments for bail out money in the billions. And governments are bailing them out due to sh1tting their pants about the dominoe effect of letting one go down.

I think anyone who isn’t applauding Arsene and the board for demonstrating financial prudence in this environment is a complete idiot.

Chelski’s bubble is about to burst (Russia devalued ccy for the 6th time in 7 days today, the russian govt spent 8 billion dollars today alone trying to defend the currency. Putin won’t be lending any more money to any Oligarch’s any time soon).
Liverpool are buggered when any financing the new owners do has to be refinanced.
ManU debt goes up 20 mio quid a year.
And the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund lost 125 bio dollars in 2008.
I’ve said it on here before and say it again, our long term health will be better than anyone and in 10 years time we will be the biggest club in europe.

  133. oh and imo a salary cap is a great idea as it stops any financial doping (as AW calls it) and stops the likes of Chelski in the past or City in the future making a mockery of football.

unlikely to happen though unless it is undertaken across all european leagues.

  134. so are you saying we shouldnt have a salary cap, because the clubs should have some self control and not pay the higher and higher wages then poliziano?

  135. Matty, is the 20 mil man u debt before buying players?

  136. Perhaps “prestige” was the wrong word. I only meant that people will be more eager to watch City when they have two good players.

While Sparky and Professor Petroleum are there, City will always have negative prestige.

  137. Duke the salary cap may be a good idea but at what value do you put it over europe. Do you put it in euros or pounds?

  138. Sparky and professor petroleum will go with a bang.

  139. That was just my answer to your 10:19 question, dukeGoonem; but I do think clubs should accept responsibility for their own finances – the same as any other company.

  140. The 20 mio quid is BEFORE buying players.

The Glazers have to find £90m per year JUST TO SERVICE the debt they borrowed when they bought the club.

The last accounts showed a 65 mio quid loss.

It can’t go on. Not in this financial meltdown.

  141. the 65 mio quid loss was on one year. they are about 900 mio in debt, depending on how you work out the numbers.

  142. how does it work in american football, im not to wise to the caps out there but doesnt each team have the same salary budget and can spend that how they wish?

  143. salary cap + draft system…. you get to pick new players from college system earlier in the queue the worse your record was in the previous season.
    really evens up the sport.
none of this big four (or five as it is now) malarkey.

  144. If Kaka goes to Man City it will only be for the money, which will be really sad and another nail in the coffin of the game as other mercenaries will follow. I also think it is disgracefully irresponsible and offensive to spend £100m on one player and pay him those ridiculous wages in the current economic climate. This whole obscene business disgusts me and I’m not in the least excited at the prospect of him playing in the PL under these circumstances.

  145. Do you think West Brom would be doing better if they had their pick of players from our university teams?

  146. Poliziano – You may get your wish regarding a top club going bust. Liverpool are in shit. They had until late Jan to repay the loan that the yanks took out and couldn’t. RBS and a US bank (They called something like Wachovia) have given them a 6 months deferment with a warning. Abramovich seems to be losing interest in Chelsea and there are also all sorts of cost cutting measures going on. I’ve heard a couple of rumours, one that Abramovich either has to sell his yacht or Chelsea and that he has put Chelsea up for sale for 1 euro (Plus the debt!).
Outside the top 4 West Ham are on the verge of imploding and Charlton have posted huge losses. We could well lose some clubs that are important to our football.

  147. We could do with losing the spurtz. Them going bankrupt would be good

  148. Apparently Sheikh Mansour is going to buy a PhD for all the coaching staff at Man. City.

  149. Steve – Who would I laugh at then?

  150. Agree with Steve…the Spuds are a waste of space.

  151. You just got to love Cesc.

  152. Good point Marc

  153. Has anyone ever known a 21 year as balanced and mature as Cesc. He always looked like a future captain but I was worried that the burden might be to much to soon but you just have to stand back and admire him. Long live the King!

  154. And you got love Arsene for bringing on Cesc :)

  155. G4E – Cesc is King and Wenger is God.

  156. I was just watching Life on Mars (based in 1973) and I thought Spurz had gone 12 years since winning the league then. How sad it would be for them if they still had not won it in 2009. :-)

  157. P.S. at least Life on Mars was in colour.

  158. Steve – Is that a typo? Surely you mean 2109.

  159. Marc, everyone knows that they will be above us next season. (no one said which season). Like tomorrow never comes

  160. They keep telling me that but I suppose I’m just to stupid to see the obvious. Never mind they say ignorance is bliss.

  161. 3 of the spurtz fans arrested for the trouble at Portsmouth were kids of 15, 15, & 13. It shows you how intelligent their parents are. And you talk about ignorance.

  162. Really – I didn’t know that. I love the banter, the arguments, the bickering but racism and homophobia – just fucking grow up.

  163. I will never forget the look and smile on Wenger’s face when Cesc scored against Blackburn, I think it was 2005 or 2006 season…It was the look of a very proud father of his son…That moment to me was much better than winning a trophy.

  164. Had to rephrase comment due to waiting for moderation.

Really – I didn’t know that. I love the banter, the arguments, the bickering but racism and homophobia – just fcuking grow up.

  165. G4E what about when Cesc scored against AC Milan. He ran straight to Wenger.

  166. Definitely that one too Steve….

  167. Pennant ditched Milan for Portsmouth…what a Plonker !

  168. Paper talk max?

  169. good morning all.

  170. Spurs finish above us??!!! U got to be having a laugh, they are going down this season. Redknapp is a gooner and is spendin all their money so once he takes them down they will stay down. :P

  171. If manure made up an 8pt gap last yr m sure we can do better this yr…

Keep that trophy on ice we got some fireworks in our Arsenal!!!!!!!!!!
