Hope that your festivities were enjoyable and that the fat bloke with the beard delivered your Christmas wishes to you and yours. Arsene’s wishes for everyone to be fit and well have not come to bear but rather like Number two son wanting a PS3 for himself and a Wii for his brother so that they would not argue over who was going to have a go on them, it was overly optimistic.
Recent games have been described as ‘must win’. I am not happy with such descriptions because I believe every game is a ‘must win’ if you are challenging for the title. And yes, Arsenal are still in the mix thanks to the inconsistency of those above and around us. Time though is running out to take advantage of such frivolity on their part; someone, somewhere, sometime very soon is going to start putting a run together and Arsenal need to be in a position to keep pace with that.
This evening’s visit to Villa Park mirrors last season’s meeting. Just over a year ago, Fabregas and van Persie were the key individuals missing. This time it is the Spaniard and Adebayor. Arguably, the same impact from those unfit to play will be felt. The crucial difference this time is the confidence in the two camps. Villa probably believe they can beat anyone at the moment whilst even the Arsenal players probably cannot tell you which version of themselves will turn up; will it be the lacklustre ones or the galvanised version from the last half an hour or so on Sunday?
The truth is that it needs to be the ones on the top of their game. It is a fixture that both sides need to win for differing primary reasons. Whilst Villa want the points to consolidate their top four position to fulfill their realistic ambition of finishing in a Champions League placing, Arsenal want the win for that as their basic requirement but more importantly to keep in touch with the leaders. Let us be honest here. By the time that this match kicks off, Manchester United ought to have taken maximum points from their visit to Stoke whilst West Brom and Bolton will have probably been put to the sword by Chelsea and Liverpool respectively. A win will be required for the Wenger boys to maintain the current status quo. Failure will mean that the squad will be Deeper Down in the mire; any title flame still flickering would be considerably dimmer but still not totally extinguished.
The absences of Cesc and Adebayor will mean a reshuffle. Defensively, I would not expect any changes unless there are late injuries. In midfield though, Cesc’s absence must surely mean a return to the centre for Denilson. He has worked hard on the flanks but he is not a winger nor does he claim to be. Wenger has the option of putting Diaby in there but I am convinced that this will be the case. It seems likely that Eboue will come in on the right. Diaby is lacking confidence at the moment, or seems to me to be, perhaps being the result of not getting regular games. It is a chicken and egg situation because unless he rediscovers his form, he is not going to get his run of games.
Up front, Bendtner will be given the opportunity to show himself. His media comments this week have been, as per usual, translated wildly from the ‘play me or I go‘ to the more likely, ‘I want to play and believe I can do a good job‘. Perhaps more than anyone in recent months, Bendtner personifies a ‘talks a good game’ attitude. He did not deliver when Adebayor was out. Fundamentally, he has to score goals to force his way into Wenger’s thinking on a more regular basis. Pressure will come if Eduardo’s return is successful next month. Wenger will have a good selection of forwards to choose from and Bendtner will not be the automatic replacement.
A different option for this evening would be van Persie leading the line with Diaby playing the supporting role but this role does not really bring the best out of the Dutchman which is perhaps the defining reason not to play him as the lead striker. I suspect the line-up will be:
Almunia; Sagna, Gallas, Djourou, Clichy; Eboue, Denilson, Song, Nasri; van Persie; Bendtner
With a bench of:
Fabianski, Diaby, Wilshere, Vela, Hoyte, Toure (if fit), Randall
The gameplan Villa employ will no doubt be not dissimilar to the one that they utilised at The Emirates; speedy attacks and swamping midfield. It is up to the Arsenal players to show that fixture was a lowpoint and to use a cliche, once bitten twice shy. The only concern that I have about countering such tactics is the ball over the top of the defence which caught us out for the second goal on that occasion and also Liverpool’s equaliser last Sunday. There cannot be a repeat. Three points are vital whatever the outcome of the other games to stay in touch.
Enjoy the match wherever you watch it. ’til Tomorrow.
Merry x-mas to you too. Fingers crossed for a good result tomorrow.

I will feel very pessimistic if we play a 4-4-2 with Bendtner. As you say, they beat us last time by swamping the midfield and breaking at speed. We need to play a 5 man midfield and I think Diaby will be up top of that with Eboue on the right. It may not be best for RVP, but he really worked hard defensively against ‘pool blanketing Xabi Alonso when he got the ball — I think he may soon work his way out of the champaign footballer category.
On a different note, is David Silva available? Would Valencia let him go? Would you guys like to see this likely expensive signing? I know I would…

Who are we??????? We are ARSENAL. ARSENAL. ARSENAL. (this is an encouragement speech to all the gunners out there including the players). I am 29 years of Age and i have a son who is 2 months old. I put him infrotn of the screen whenever there is an ARSENAL game. Am i crazy? Maybe i am. But do i love Arsenal? You bet i do. I DO. I DO. Dear friends and dear players, are you as crazy as i am? I know if the players were half as crazy as i am, we would have one all our previous games this season. Do you ask me why? Well you call me crazy, but i call me passionate. Yes my dear players passionate. I support Arsenal because i love Arsenal. When we loose, i cry, i see everything in black, i worry. Am i getting paid to love Arsenal? No i am not. The advantage that i have above any player is that passion and love are free. Do you have this passion for the Team. Do you have the passion to win each and every game, even though you know that you are getting paid at the end of the day? Wenger has tried so hard to raise you from the early ages of 12 to 15 whenby you were not being paid to play football. He was inputting passion to the team in your hearts. This is why i have seen the youngsters perform better in the youth teams. They play for the love of the team, for the love of football. My players, my friends, do you know that there is a blind supporter that never misses a game for Arsenal? What do you call this? Crazy? I call it love. i want you all to forget the world of money, you already have this. Fight for the love and passion, fight for those who love you. Fight for the titles that make us happy. Be part of Us, Be a FANATIC FAN. Be part of ARSENAL. Be ARSENAL for life. Believe in yourselves, believe in the team, believe in you love, passion, and unity. No one is better then you, no one is better then you, no on is better then you. We are behind you because we love ARSENAL, We will fight for you, You are our family. Do not let our family fall apart. UNITE and FIGHT. No one is better then you. ARSENAL is the dominance of passion and love. FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

Yes agree with Cali. RVP alone, with 5 in the middle. We should get 3 points if the 5 man midfield work their socks off like they did the last 30 mins against liverpool. RVP has enuff class in him to finish the game off. Midfield is the key. So heres to Eboue,Nasri,Song,Diaby and Denilson….GO ON LADS…..SHOW EM YOUR BOLLOCKS !!!! LETS DO EM FROM THE FIRST WHISTLE !!! I’D RAISE ME GLASS OF WINE TO A SLIDING FROM BEHIND “WELCOME”TACKLE FROM SONG ON BARRY IN THE FIRST SECOND !!! GET IN THEIR FACES LADS …..DON’T LET THEM PLAY….THEN HIT THEM ON THE BREAK !!! Bentner will play since ade can come back in two days.
Eboue might though I would not be amazed if vela played wide. and van p might be dropping back some to help in midfield.
But also I would not be so certain stoke west brom and Bolton will lose. Especially stoke. None of the top teams are on form and all will be resting players.

I must admit I’m nervous about todays game. We need the players to step up and prove that Wengers faith in them is justified. Also I’ve just seen some clips from the Stoke – Man U game, how come Rooney and Ronaldo were not sent off. Rooney clearly elbowed a Stoke player in front of the linesman and Ronaldo retaliated by kicking out at Stoke player. There were a lot of comments after the Liverpool game about our players being booked when others aren’t. Something needs to be done about this.

Cheap championship level team recruited from abroad under the cover of ‘exceptional talents’
Almunia, Diaby, Eboue, Denilson, all not fit to play for the Arsenal let alone to sit on the bench.
We’ll struggle to fight for 4th place. One man’s folly to buy average foreign players is the bane of the fall from grace of the team from 2005.
Its shocking that players like Senderos has even played for the Arsenal before.
We’re on the way to a mid table team unless the man who recruits only cheap foreign players is sacked. He’ll eventually destroy the Arsenal as we know it.
Get real, Arsenal has become an average team not a Top 4.

What can you say about this one? Gallas had help but I guess he didnt see it for the penalty and I dont know who it was but someone just turned and passed the ball to Villa leading up to their last goal when they couldve easily held it up and looked for an Arsenal team mate. Its all mental isnt it? just doing the right thing at the right time, we cant seem to master that part of the game!

And why have we got Chelsea and Man utd rejects in our defensive?
By: Gooner1 on December 26, 2008
at 7:44 pm
Ateeb,
When your team is really not firing on all cylinders and having a confidence issues, you’re 2-1 up with 20 minutes or so to go….he went for defending the lead rather than trying to extend. To be honest it was more viable we hold on, than scoring more.
Maybe he could’ve taken Toure off, pushed Gallas & Silverstre in the middle, Clichy in his left back position and either left Nasri or put on Vela on to try to bull the team forward….but he went for protecting the lead. To be honest Villa deserved something out of this and luck finally turned their way in the last couple of minutes.
By: Gunner4Ever on December 26, 2008

Three more injuries to a team already decimated by injuries is hard to assimilate. It’s remarkable we can still put out a very good team. I feel we suffer more from lack of continuity than from lack of quality. We got off to a slow start today, but played some good football later on. Overall, not the performance I hoped for – not the performance I know those players can give.
By: Poliziano on December 26, 2008

A 2-2 draw with half a side at Villa (who are flying) isn`t a bad result at all but defensively we are shambolic.
The old saying that you defend as a team doesn`t seem to apply right now. This side is just too lightweight I`m afraid.
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 26, 2008

G4E, Wenger has tried that in the past. But now he should have realised that we are really bad at protecting the lead. It only makes our defence more vulnerable, when u bring on more defensive players. We have no one to pass to, and can’t handle the waves of opposition attacks. I was thinking the s ame thing that Toure to be taken off, and silvestre moved in.

Villa played well, we played pretty badly but we unusually had a lot of luck today, 3 times Villa hit the post & we lead the half 0-1, we scored a good goal & were pretty soon 0-2 after the break but like on cue we failed miserably while defending. No confidence whatsoever amongst the players while defending & the only exception being Sagna. From grinding out boring 1-0 to the Arsenal, we have become a team who can’t defend even 2 goal leads. Looks like this season again we are struggling to overcome a small but crucial mistake by Clichy…this time his slip against Spurs

“Looks like this season again we are struggling to overcome a small but crucial mistake by Clichy…this time his slip against Spurs ”
Firstly I think that comment is ridiculous. Like all the things I find ridiculous today. And secondly if what you say makes sense, than if our team can’t get over such slips, than we don’t deserve to win anything anyways.
By: Ateeb on December 26, 2008

Clichy can’t even be blamed for the draw with Spurs, never mind for subsequent poor results.

I can understand how you feel Ateeb, and I feel the same….but every one makes a choice or takes a decision thinking it’s the best, and no one will ever predict the outcome.
If he put in more attackers and we lost, we were still going to say he’s stupid for not putting on more defenders.
==
I wouldn’t really put it all on Clichy, you can have some defining moments in a season but I think this year it’s more confidence than anything else.
I think we better off, going 1/0 down and come back, because for some reason even if we are 2-0 up and we concede, our confidence goes out the window immediately.
By: Gunner4Ever on December 26, 2008

We just didnt control the ball at the end of th match as far as I saw it. We seemed uneasy and afraid to hold onto the ball and just kicked it about aimlessly. We wouldve won if we just settled down.
All in all if you look at our injuries and Ade not being in because of racist and biased ref decision, there is quite a lot to be proud of. The team has it in them but the mental focus, confidence and fearlessness is not their as yet so there as yet so we are bound to make mistakes.
If this team and the fans can remain patient, the tides will turn.

Poliziano, I was thinking the same – we’ve barely played the same team twice this season and I think that has had a lot do with our inconsistency. Especially so for the defence. Last season we were the ones scoring the late goals, this season we keep conceding them. It’s certainly frustrating, but we didn’t lose and we’ll have Ade back and soon Eduardo. If we could score more when we are on top it would take the pressure off the defence. If only that RVP chance gone in to make it 3!

Passenal,
That’s the core of the problem. We haven’t turned out the same back 4 more than 2ce consecutively.
Injury is a part of it…and it’s a problem really.
And why are they defending with so much panic. Why are Gallas, Toure and Silvestre so frightful suddenly?
By: Ole Gunner on December 26, 2008

Passenal, Ole gunner. You’re talking about the back four? What about the centre of midfield? Who do we know is preffered in the middle, Song or Denilson. Too many injuries and too many shuffling around. It’s just sad, because we have a great squad. The players on the pitch today are exceptional. But we haven’t really had an idea on what our first team is. And give them a run together to develop that style of play, that we had last year. Wenger’s project hit a brick wall, when mercenaries like Flamini/ Diara/ and Hleb decided to jump ship. It would have been our year, if those ***** had stayed. Maybe we are again a season away from developing the players that we have right now, to genuinely challange for the PL title. I was confident in the team when the season started, was confident even 2 weeks back. But the injury situation is just baffling. No team can deal with such injury situations. It’s down to Wenger that we have come so far.

Despite our empty shelves last season, I think it was an amazing year. The football was amazing. This year, the style hasn’t been there. The fighting spirit has gone missing at times. But I don’t blame the players or the manager, we’ve been dealing with difficult situations, with regards to mercenaries and injuries. And offcourse the referees. However, Wenger’s project is almost there. Won’t be long before it starts to bloom fully. The next two three years will clearly show, what Wenger has been working on and how good he is at what he does. Amazing potential and players to look out for. I’m just too excited about the coming years, that even if we end up in the mid table. I won’t give a shi*. Atleast we’re not spending f***** on over priced players. When we win the title, we wouldn’t have bought it. We would have earned it.

Jamie, I don’t see why you’re having a go at Denilson, Diaby and Eboue – those 3 were responsible for our 2 goals today. Denilson is 20 and getting his first run in the team and he has been doing fine. Diaby has been unfortunate with injuries after the assault from Dan Smith – he needs a run of games. Eboue is still relatively new to his position and is just on the way back from injury. The team is suffering from the effects of too many enforced personnel changes, which are stopping us from getting into a groove, but the signs are there that they are getting better. We just need a settled defensive line up so they can develop some understanding and consistency.

The legendary Zinedine Zidane has paid the ultimate compliment to Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri and backed the Frenchman to achieve a great career.
Nasri, who scored on his Arsenal debut, will be happy to know that one of the best players in the history of the game is one of his admirers.
Zidane has hailed the left midfielder and tipped him to reach to the very top with both his club and country.
The former Real Madrid icon has even said that watching Nasri in action is a pleasure for him.
Zidane said: “I really think that Samir has a beautiful career ahead of him and that he represents our national team’s biggest hope.
“I have been following his career since day one because we share the same origins and we both come from Marseille.

Yes Jamie, Djourou got injured in the warm up. Clichy aggravated an existing injury thanks to Keane’s tackle last weekend and Gallas is just back from injury.
Ole, I do think Wenger’s current first choice defence is Sagna, Gallas, Djourou and Clichy at the moment. If they could get a run of games to develop as a unit it would help considerably. If the team were more secure at the defensively, it would help the consistency and confidence.

We have an average team. When you have an average team you can’t achieve anything. Players who don’t deserve to be on the bench are now playing regularly. Craps, brought as ‘exceptional talents’
The boys will improve, next year, next year and the next that doesn’t seem to end. Since 2005.
No wonder with such average players we’ve been beaten by Fulham, Stoke, hull, Villa and very soon Portsmouth.
One man’s arrogance and so called ‘Arsene Knows’ BS.

Ole, you are right, Sidwell isn’t good enough for us, but that was never the point. The point is, our midfield is’t good enough for us either.
Wenger’s increasingly bizarre press coferences tell their own story. Are we better than last year? Are we better than 2005? Are we better than 2004? We are going backwards. I’ve stated before I don’t want Wenger to go, but to admit and rectify his mistakes

Jamie,
You have joined the ‘Arsene bizarre press conferences’ bandwagon.
I’m sorry, but a red card to you too.
Why don’t you come up with something constructive, instead of bemoaning ‘mediocrity’. The 2nd goal Arsenal scored, was that ‘mediocre’ ?? I don’t see Villa or Liverpool scoring a goal that good.
The problem with Arsenal is the inability to grind out the win after taking the lead. If we can become just a little more composed and learn how to grind out passages of play where we don’t concede for 20, 30 minutes then results may come.

Not being able to beat Villa is not good enough. They’re quite honestly not that good. Good but not that good.
So people are right to moan. We’ve fallen behind in a title race we honestly would have been in had the final result been 1-2.
And about the midfield, Denilson apart you might have a point. They’re not passing enough, and accurately enough.
But they’re still quality. Sheer quality. Eboue, Diaby and Denilson (Sagna apart) were our best players on the pitch. Diaby was great in fact.
On the other hand this result just underlines the difference in quality between us and Villa for example.
Missing Adebayor, Eduardo, Rosicky, Fabregas, Song (goes of injured), Walcott, Djourou, Clichy (who had a knock)…. Add 3 players to that side and I’d fancy them to thump Villa.
And Villa played well. They played their Cup Final. You could tell they’d given a lot.
I’m putting £50 on Hull thumping them on Sunday.

I don’t expect Villa to even finish fifth. I think Everton will take that position. They had a bad start to the season, but they’re not far behind Villa. To me, they have a far stronger team. In my opinion, Villa don’t have particularly good players. Madrid can offer £25m for Young, but it doesn’t make him worth that. It just shows that Madrid haven’t learned from the past.

Jamie, you can choose to expend energy gnashing your teeth and rending your garments, but it is not going to make any difference – it will not influence anything. We have to manage with the resources we have until the transfer window opens. Some of us have more patience and choose to expend our energy looking for the positives and supporting the team. Wenger is a victim of his own success. He set the bar so high with the invincibles that people are expecting to see the same thing again. Jamie,
In 2005 we finished 2nd after Abramovich went out and spent £178 million after finishing 2nd behind Arsenal in 2004.
In the subsequent 2 years it’s well document that we finished 4th.
Last year we finished 3rd.
So in 4 years, we were competitive twice. In the years 2005-2006, 2006-2007, we had a full complement of experienced players but finished 4th, yet our team, supposedly weaker after the loss of Henry, PV4, Ljungberg and Pires did better last year.

We can compete every year, it doesn’t mean we will win it though…and it may take 10 years. It took Chel$ki 50 years and they bought it with money. It’s taking Liverpool 13 and they’re still struggling. It took Man Ure 3 years, and the also spent a ton of money.

By: Passenal on December 26, 2008

Jamie the reasons for the break up of the invincibles is well documented – it was not done maliciously – we had seen the best of most of them by the time they left as time marches on and they were on their way down. By leaving when they did people remember them at their peak – look at poor Gilberto and the stick he had to take from people saying he was past it last season.
Losing most of our first choice midfield has not helped the evolution of the team, so unfortunately we may have to take a step backwards in order to go forward. There does not seem to be much point lamenting what could have been were it not for injury, the march of time or greed. We are where we are now and the only control we have is over our reaction to the situation. You choose one route and I choose another and we are not going to persuade each other to follow the other one’s path no matter how long we debate this.

I agree with the usual suspects. I don’t expect many more fans to be very patient though.
Ostensibly a disappointing result given the run of the game, but:
Villa are the form side in the league.
We are injury/suspension ridden to say the least. Apply our absences to Vila, or any other side, and you’d left with next to nothing. We have to wait and see how Wenger deals with that issue.
Meanwhile,
Denilson is a tremendous player – who knows what he could become if we can get a core of players to stay fit and work around him.
Sagna is an amazing right-back.
Let’s see what happens after the next match. I’m back in London – it’s cold and drab and everyone’s always talking about recession.
Have a good weekend!

Sagna is the best defensive player in the league, the guy is simply amazing!
Some of us need to calm down, this team will be great!
Just a little more composure was needed and we didnt have the more senior players in the mid to calm it down. Ramsey got antsy and gave up the ball a few times and actually passed to the Villa keeper.
The ability is there but we have to get most of our players off of the injured list.
More composure is what we need and I am backing this team to get better.

The facts are we are still carrying a hell of a lot of injuries to key personnel and it is effecting our performances.
Our strongest likely side would be
Almunia
Sagna Djourou (at present) Gallas Clichy
Nasri Cesc Denilson Rosicky
Van Persie
Adebayor
We have never played that side. Then our back ups get injured and Wenger is chopping and changing his teams far too often mostly not by choice.
We have a very talented young squad who are likely to develop into real top top players for us but I guess the question is do we have enough ready made players to come in for the likes of Rosicky and Cesc?
Many have said that we are lacking experience but I don’t really buy into that. I just feel we are lacking quality in certain areas.

arsenalvision – you are a star. Also, Eduardo and Walcott could be potentially be included in that team.
Today, we had Walcott, Eduardo, Rosicky, Fabregas, Djourou (established CB as of late), Clichy (most of the game) and Adebayor out. 7 first team players.

Big Al – thanks…as usual a sane response. Had to get the game via 5live and MOTD, but Sagna.. what a talent !
Eboue – he looked like he was shaking until the assist.. cliche or not, confidence will make him; we had the most decimated side ever, went to Villa and got 2 goals.. (Denilson, a star in the making!)
Man U ..jet-lagged, yeah yeah.. would have got nothing at Stoke but for a slice of luck.
The only team to play better than us today were Citeh, imho..
But…dammit, i wasn’t there, and can only go by commentators and replays etc.
However, given just 2 or 3 fit players..we’d have killed them! Great spirit in tough times.
Passenal – good stuff as usual, but you’re wasting your energy on that specimen!

Thank you Muppet, never been called that before *sniff
Aneta,
Where are those players? Well they are either past their best or retired.
Yeah we are 5th in the league for a reason, the reason is because we have been inconistent. We have picked many different sides due to mainly injuries.
What would have happened had Pires been out for as long as Pires? Then Vieira out for 4 months along with Henry coming back from a broken leg?
I do not understand why you choose to ignore the truth.

Was out for a while & no Arsenal for a while.
Ateeb, about my comment about Arsenal not recovering from Clichy’s mistake this yr, I wasn’t blaming Clichy for all our troubles, I was just giving my 2 pence worth explanation that the team’s mental ability to defend went burst after the spurs game. Everyone to my mind has been very nervy from that game on & having difficulty holding on to a lead in most of the games. Even before the spurs game our defending was nothing great & infact after that game I commented that AW could finally stop pointing out all kind of stats like only 1 (or was it 2 goals) goal was scored against us in open play & the rest came from set pieces, accept the problem & get to work. U dont like the explanation fine by me.

By: Siva on December 27, 2008

I watched the game again on football first last night (probably because I am a little sick in the head I guess)
And I couldn’t believe my eyes for the second Villa goal.
Villa took a thrown on from the right and there was absolutely no pressure on the player receiving the throw on. At that stage of the game I was just amazed. It was that guy (Milner I think) swung in the cross to which Knight score (unmarked)
It is funny (or not) that we do some things better than anyone in Europe on our day but some things like defending, the players would have been shouted at for not doing at pub football level.
How I long for an injury free season, infact I would easily trade in Wenger buying anyone for the next two years for one season with no major injuries.
We would be by far the best in this league with our first team having a consistent run together.
By: arsenalvision on December 27, 2008

I saw the good things in the game, and they were the goals by Denilson and Diaby. The first was an example of desire, alertness and clinical finishing. The second was class from its build up to the finish involving 2 players, Diaby and Eboue. There were probably more negatives than there were positives throughout the team. Having said that, Sagna was exceptional.
By: Luke on December 27, 2008
at 9:12 am
Given the missing players, the injury right before the start and the usual forced inconsistency in selection, it was a pretty good peformance.
It’s funny how our problems do move around the field. A few weeks ago we seemed to need a defender, a bit later a midfielder or two. Now, we are back to having a very dodgy central defence.
Injuries are hurting us badly.
I don’t know. Diaby had been having a mare of a season and then plays like the star he looked loked he might be earlier in his career. Confidence? More time on the pitch?
I just wish we had had our full squad for the season. Then perhaps we could reach some kind of sensible assessment of this Team.
As it is, we seem doomed to go over and over the same old ground. That’s us, not the team.
If I was Arsene, where would I be seeing the gaps in the squad this morning? Where would my priority lie for any strengthening?
By: Consolsbob on December 27, 2008

I agree with the comment earlier that the end of the Spurs game is still on the players minds but there appears a basic lack of defensive discipline in the team as a whole.
The conundrum is will AW sacrifice some of the team`s go forward to be a little more pragmatic in order to grind out results.
Once Song departed yesterday the midfield hardly had a defensive bone in their bodies.
Does anybody think Coquelin is ready yet ?
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 27, 2008

correct Arsenal vision
Total switch off for the equaliser – you can ay that they are mentally fragile after the Spurs late show but this wasn’t about lots of bodies back and panicking – they did not pressure the first ball, then Knight is left unmarked and has all the time to control and shoot. Watch the highlights again and watch Denilson – he is ball watching and then stands and watches Knight score. It’s a classic example of the lack of a midfielder with any defensive instinct who will watch for danger developing (Knight pushing into the box) and either yelling at another midfielder to pick him up or doing it himself. It’s the small boring things that get you every time….
By: alanG on December 27, 2008

Diaby did show some fire up his ass for a change. The strenght of his run and quality of finish did show that he can offer something in time – we forget his injury and lack of a consistent run of games.
He may evolve as an attacking midfielder/second striker but he is not a defensive minded player.

The usual rubbish from AW blaming the ref. What about you and your team AW. I am looking at the the manager here. He fills the teams with players that are not ready and wonders why they do not have the nous to finish games off.
Let’s face it, most of us could not believe we were 2-0 up and I don’t think that some of the players believed it either. The second goal was yet another example of poor defending and apart from the goals the only chance of note was RvP hitting the bar.
This was a golden opportunity to close the gap on our currently 1 genuine rival and we blew it as we have done with horrible regularity since Brum last year.
This team is not capable of challenging for the Prem and on current form will struggle to finish 4th. Maybe this is what’s needed to effect some change in this policy that is simply not working.

Let’s see about injuries then. Of the first team only Cesc and Theo are injured. Clichy was rested and you cannot say that Johann is a first teamer. Song went off injured. Eddy was always going to be out for this one which leaves Rosicky.
Its not that we had sh**loads of injuries but that the ones we do have have been keenly felt. Lack of suitable replacements is a huge problem.
By: Alex Ice Cream on December 27, 2008
at 12:55 pm
A result I certainly would have accepted before the game, obviously became a huge disappointment because of the position we had got ourselves in.
What struck me was that both Gallas & Kolo, who were high energy athletic defenders, do not seem to have the nous to compensate for their seemingly diminishing pace, in the way that say Tony Adams did.
Time & again I was thinking ‘no one would beat Kolo like that even a year ago’.
The penalty (the crucial moment) was just poor decision making from Gallas, who simply should not have made the challenge. He would have been able to execute it in days gone by & perhaps he cannot take it on board that he is now unable to so. Perhaps they can both learn to adjust their games but I somehow doubt it.
Having just brought on Clichy to presumably stop the balls getting into our box the second Villa goal was a disgrace from a team defending point of view. Don’t blame our players, who were back, but those in front of them who didn’t close Villa down.
Plenty of positives though. Villa, in their current form, would have put most teams on the rack, as they did for the opening 35 minutes, but we battled through to score a magnificent goal & for just a short spell showed that it can take on anyone.
It is a developing side. The short spells will become longer but the concentration & passion has to last for 90 minutes, every game.

What a great tonic you are Frank. Thanks.
f-g is, of course, totally correct.
Unless you have a situation, where money grows on trees (like Chavski & now City) it is not that easy to buy a successful side either.
What the likes of Jamie & AIC constantly cannot grasp is that football is not a pure science, where you know what will happen.
People like them never answer the question of who they would have bought, & at what cost, comparable players to the greats, who just got too old or hard to motivate?
The last 3/4 years have been transitional, no doubt, but not as I used to know it. Pre Wenger transitions have meant at best mid table & at worst flirting with relegation.
We have no divine rights in the football world, so keeping us, even in the top 5, given the major changes that have had to be made, is a minor miracle.
The nucleus of the side, that took us so close last season, will get back to that level & with the pure class that we also have coming through, our team can take us to a standard that can even exceed the best Arsenal have ever produced. There will be knocks & ups & downs but, like Frank, I really believe, that if they all have the determination, this squad will be the best (fullest) overall ever, at the club.
I would like the doubters to just take the pressure off themselves & see that football has so much more to it, than their obsessions.

I think a new central defender would be very welcome. What we have can’t cut it. Yes, the midfield could have done more to defend the lead but, as we keep saying, they are young. The defence yesterday was about the most expereinced that we could put out.
How many championships have Gallas, Toure and Sylvestor won between them? They know what it takes and did not deliver it.
That’s it. I still believe that this side will grow and will win titles. They need help though.

AIC, no team can overcome this amount of injuries and you know that. You can take any team in this league and they “will” suffer, no matter how much you think we should have bought – there is just no way.
Many are saying there was lack of defensive pressure for the last goal but watch again we gave away the ball when we were not under defensive pressure. an old saying “prevention is better than a cure” – if we kept our composure Villa wouldnt have gotten the ball when they did.
Someone help me, who was it that turned and passed the ball to Villa? it is here where the mistake was made.
I also think Wenger gets on the refs because rarely do we get the benifit of the doubt. Other teams will foul us like hell with many cautions while our first hard foul will produce a yellow/penalty etc – it must be hard for him to swollow.
Many people, even Arsenal fans say we should play through this and not complain but ask urself, did any of the last few PL winners have to overcome it? and if they got the same calls against them would they have? I think no.
I understand Arsene’s frustration and fully support him to that end.
our team is good and I thinkk something good is gonna come out of all the heart ache.
Lets support our team and remain positive, though it may be difficult!
By: Paul N on December 27, 2008
at 4:06 pm
When you can keep your stars on the feild (healthy) they make the lesser players look much better – ie Man U. Fact is we played with most of our best players out yesterday and played quite well – which I think no other team coul’ve done – pool, chelsea and Man U included.
dissapointment has away of blurring things.
So yes Denilson and Diaby could play for any team and based on yesterday so could Eboue.
By: Paul N on December 27, 2008
at 4:18 pm
Paul N,
It’s good to see you back and out of the pulpit.
We need more positivity on here, though I’m not feeling too positive at the moment.
We have let leads slip against our direct rivals in the last 2 games – costing us 4 points.
If we had the strength to hold out in both games we’d actually be in contention.
As it is the table makes for depressing reading, having lost ground once again.
Having said, that I’m fully in support of Wenger and his way of doing things.
Soemtimes it just feels that the gods (and everything else) are against us. If the players ever get to feeling like that we are sunk.
I think without the constant misfortune Wengers youth plan might have worked, but I now fear for the confidence of these players, which is essential to successful football.
This match was disastrous, we were so close to a, pretty much undeserved, victory that could have been the turning point.
Now the players must feel that they have failed. We do lack someone to really galvanise the players. Someone to support and even teach Cesc.
I do believe that Wenger must act now, at the very least to stop the sniping, and to acknowledge that some changes need to be made in order to develop some momentum.
If not, I fear the Ice Creams, the Arse21s and the Howards of this world will drive him out and everything will unravel.
By: Ian Dolent on December 27, 2008

Thanks Ian!
I understand how you feel and also agree that Arsene must do something.
I have a question for you, why is it that Gallas and Toure are not senior enough to teach the youngsters? they are, no?
We didnt have the right attitude at the beginning and now we do our best players are injured and not playing due to unjust rest cards.
Why is it our team suffers with this amount of injuries?
I do see a delimma that Arsene seems to have, my opinion at least. Arsene plays the more experienced team to the detriment of a more balanced and offensive team.
I am positive that something good going to come out of this.
What we lack and lacked yesterday is/was composure.
It is possible that the players could still be spooked from the spurs game as has been said. No one wanted to keep the ball.

Paul N,
To my mind neither Gallas or Toure are strong enough mentally to really be effective mentors. Add that to their erratic form and they can surely not be relied upon to hone the performances of the youngsters.
I wonder if Toure’s form after the AFC coincided with the appointment of Gallas as captain. Either that or he has a long-term niggly injury. He seems a shadow of the player we alll loved.
By: Ian Dolent on December 27, 2008

Ian,
Two effective centre backs are key for success. Look at all the great centre backs at Arsenal over the past 20 years & currently Vidic / Ferdinand, Terry / Carvalho.
Those players are rocks which their teams are built around.
On paper, with their class & experince, Gallas & Toure should be alongside those pairs & give confidence to the rest of the side but right now it`s just not happening.
Has Gallas lost half a yard ? Kolo was all over the place yesterday. It`s not easy to just say buy a CB in January either.
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 27, 2008

Ian, I have the same feeling about Toure as you do. I don’t think a player like him can lose his form this way, after he was soaring high before the Chel$ks old man came along and opened his big mouth about Club’s ambition crap, then Wenger gave him the Armband undeservedly.
Although, the armband is not necessarily given based on age or seniority in the team, I think Toure was expecting it as the heir to Gilberto.
Toure loves Arsenal, but I think he was and is a disappointed lad. I’m afraid that until the cause of his disappointment (Gallas) leaves the club, he will never be the same.
Gallas should and will leave the club, it’s only a matter of time until Wenger find the solution. Djourou/Toure can be a good pairing. Toure/Gallas will never work.
===
I know people will say I don’t know this for sure, and I confirm that I don’t know for sure. It’s my own feeling about the situation with Toure.

Ian I agree that Gallas becoming the captain couldve been taken as a slap in the face by some of the more senior players, especially Toure and since that he has not been the same. I wonder how Wenger justifies overlooking some of his most faithful players to give it to a one year player?
By: Paul N on December 27, 2008

I do not agree with the point about Galles being made captain is the reason for Toure’s poor play. Before the ACN last season Gallas and Toure were very good together.
By: Steve on December 27, 2008

All talks about Toure not getting the armband contributing to his poor form, I don’t agree with that. I remember himself saying in an interview that he is way too introvert to be a captain.
Anyway,
after yesterday’s game, it felt like being dumped by a lover..That really hurt.
One thing that is clear though is we DO have the quality. It is the lack of confidence that is eating that precious quality.
Some people say AW is disillusioned talking about the quality of the team. Then would it help if AW gave the team Phil Brown treatment to boost that already fragile confidence?
Hope the team gets over yesterday’s diappointment before tomorrow.
C’mon Arsenal!!

I agree with Steve. In general, I dislike attempts to pin blame on individual players.
Toure could partner Gallas tomorrow, as Djourou is a doubt. Let’s hope they do well.

We are not improving the previous two games we threw away one goal leads yesterday it was a two goal lead. Improvement is winning 5 games in a row.Not 3 pts out of 9

Whats Toure’s bad form due to? not saying it is Gallas but it could be a part, who knows for sure how he feels and when it affected him. I dont know what it is but something is up, you cannot go from being talked about as one of the best CB’s in the world to how he is playinh know can you?
Improving is improving Aneta – it may not be as much improvement as we would like but the fact is we have not lost. You do remember that this Villa team beat us earlier dont you?
Lets support the boyz, their effort is obvious and things will continue to improve.

Aaron Ramsey may well get a start tomorrow….it should be interesting to watch him play with a pair of strikers in front of him….he can pick a pass…and RvP finds great spaces…watch the channels tomorrow I think….important thing is to extend the run to 6 without loss…don’t bother watching the placings until the last couple of months of the season…I think that JW might get a run out in the second half too….

No one said Toure would’ve been a better Captain, but I think the players would have liked him more since he didn’t go around mouthing them off in the Media. They also liked Gilberto because he led by example, not by acting like a jerk.
What did the first thing Gallas did when he signed for us, he said the club had no ambition and not signing good players, that’s a huge slap in the face to the youngsters even before he became a captain. I think they gave him the benefit of the doubt last year, and what did he do? Acted like a baby and let them down. Then what did he do this year? Went out and mouthed them off again in the Media.
Gallas thinks he is better than the rest, and I’m sorry he’s not. I never thought of him as a good player even at Chelsea, he was hiding behind JT while JT was in his best years.
I’m not blaming Gallas for our demise last season or this season, it takes more than one player to do so…but he certainly helped, and even though Cashley is sh!t at Chel$ki…we still got the sh!t end of the deal. This will always be a bad decision on Wenger’s resume, we should have got full money from Cashley’s sale and bought someone better than Gallas.
I just don’t believe Toure can become a sh!t player over one season, and there must be something else that unsettled him and his belief in himself.
Again this is just my opinion…and I’m entitled to it.
===
I hope tomorrow we don’t feel the generosity of the Holidays and give Adams a point he so desperately needs.
===
I really hope we can win something this year with the current squad, only because I’m dying to see what kind of a freaking Doom & Gloom lame excuse AIC will come up with to belittle the achievement.

I keep hearing about us missing experience and all that but again and again, at crunch time, it’s the old heads that let us down most.
Gallas was thinking only of himself when he made that tackle. he didn’t want to be punked by Agbonlahor again. Simple Gallas! The guy was going nowhere, and there was cover. I swear I’d have bollocked the defender who made such a mistake in my Sunday League team when I played.
And then Toure who didn’t fling himself at the ball when Knight had it and shot…it’d have gone straight to the Holte End.
And why are those two (Gallas, Toure) So f*cking frightful these days. They’re not calm. Panicking at every single damn turn. It’s amazing to see.
Look let’s f*cking face it. There is no reason why we should be so poor playing Toure-Gallas. those are two top class defenders.
Not being able to defend a lead is REALLY SCARY. If you can’t defend a lead you’ll soon be fighting relegation….that’s the factor that most decides league position. You get your nose ahead and you don’t look back.
By: Ole Gunner on December 27, 2008
at 9:44 pm
It is clear that there is a divide between supporters. My thoughts are this..
It is easy to view the short term and become disillusioned with what is going on at the club.
Basically, short term we have gone from a side who went unbeaten in the league, had world class stars such as Vieira, Pires, Bergkamp, Henry, Ljungberg, Campbell etc etc
We now have a side (if you put aside the injuries we have had) that is struggling to get a grip on 4th place.
This is why many fans are upset and annoyed by the situation.
If you look beyond that and look at what should happen is another thing all together. Our future looks better than possibly what any other club has done in the past (if that makes sense)
We have a massive squad including reserves and youth teams full of talented kids who are all learning the correct way (apart from defending it seems)
If we can keep this squad together and push through the likes of Ramsey, Wilshere, Coqulain (?) etc then at 23-26 years old we will have an outstanding squad especially given the fact that players like Cesc, Nasri, Van Persie, Clichy, Denilson, Walcott are all very young.
From what I see we could probably balance the short and longer term up a little bit more. There is room for ready made players to come in and not effect the future of WIlshere etc
This is where we have gone wrong this season. I have said this many times that if our first team was fit for 90% of the season then we would be right up there pushing for the title this season.
Currently, we have players likeWilshere on the bench who are not going to be played because they are too young so it is a short term waste of a squad place.
Players like Edu, Wiltord, Kanu etc have been missed in our squad and that is the difference. We cannot afford to lose all our first team players through injury because they are what we are about.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal is not about Denilson playing on the right with Diaby on the left. Our team is not about being forced to play 4-5-1 because we have no strikers fit.
I personally would not want Wenger out of the club as I feel he is the very best. I do not understand when people say he has lost it. He has forgotten about more than all of us fans know put together.
We need to stand by what he is doing, I just hope he can correct the short term failings. And it has been a failure so far this season.
Whatever the situation is we need to support the players as they are our own players. Some people are more negative than others, I can see that AIC (surely time for a change of name now, maybe injury prone Samir) are not as positive as others such as myself, Passenal, Frank, Chris Goona etc but it is clear that he does love the club
We all need to pull together and support this team and the manager. At the end of the day they represent the Arsenal.

Good posts from you passenal, Paul N, Paulie Walnuts,G4E. As cesc eloquently put it we didnt become a crap side overnigt and the bring me the head of AW brigade has gone into silly season. No one is making excuses here.We are a squad possessed of infinite talent but greatly lacking in confidence. it is bizzare that Toure/Gallas the 2 most expereinced players seem to be the ones who can least be depended on at present.
Contrary to opinion I think the team is improving. Everybody seems to forget that not losing to Villa and Liverpool is a decent result given our current form. The fact that Man U couldnt score a goal against Villa and drew a blank and that fact that both Chelsea and Man U were defeated by Liverpool and we werent is overlooked. Also everyone forgets that Hleb and Flamini just didnt become overnight successes, they had at least 3 seasons where they were bouyed and supported buy more experienced players. Compare that to Denilson and Song who have been thrown into the fire in their first season and are being badly let down by the wiser heads. So of course they are going to be inconsistent. But on the whole they have been impressive! We may not win the EPL but we can expect great things in the future.

Interesting comment on Gunnerblog yesterday:
“It’d be fantastic to be in a position like Manchester United, whereby we have several former players performing well as managers and staking a claim to succeed Arsene.”
Who can he be thinking of?
Roy Keane? A man who ought to be in prison or a funny farm, who brought Sunderland to the brink of relegation. His departure has been immediately followed by their best form of the season.
Mark Hughes? Despite unlimited resources, his team stand one point above the relegation zone.
Paul Ince? Just sacked as manager of Blackburn, having guided them to second from bottom of the league.

AIC, pessimists, Howard,
Want a definition of a mediocre football team ?
I am watching Newcastle at the moment.
They are shocking.
They have been absolutely battered by Liverpool, who, let’s face it, are not that good.
Liverpool have scored 4 so far, and could have had 8.
So when you use terms like mediocre, take some time to watch some of the teams in the bottom half of the table, and you will understand what the word means.
Apologies to Newcastle supporters, but you lot are a sorry state.

Quite right duke – 3 points very welcome after Friday’s cock-up. Very nervous, pedestrian performance today. Thank you David James – a great present. Surely AW has to buy in January – too many injuries, not enough class left in the squad – I see Arteta got 2 for Everton today but they would be mad to sell him.

I think this team has huge quality. But all they are lacking is confidence. They are being moulded to play “with the hand-break off” But without confidence, that is impossible. Arsene can do all he can, behind the scenes. But the rest is down to us. The crowd..(and that includes our supporters everywhere…on blogs, phone-ins, pubs…etc..) must do the rest to lift the team. But then the fans are short of confidence right now.
By: mingus on December 28, 2008

What a result ponyboy! Why didnt Vela come on earlier. He sparked the team into life . Even better when Chelsea drew at Fulham and Dempsey levels in the last minute. Well dont Gallas and the whole back four.So Arsenal arent the only team that cant hold onto a lead. As for Newcastle…they might as well have not turned out.Now only 7 points between us and chelsea and 10 behind Liverpool.

It is indeed a good day to be a gooner, pb…it is indeed….just got back from the game…..point number one…..I have never been so f***ing cold in all my life…point number two…..Arsenal supporters today you were great…lots of singing….cheered the players off and on…..gave TA an ovation…and loads of people stayed to the end and cheered the players….great stuff…the game was nervy as many home games are at the moment…but with a much depleted side it was to be expected…typical Christmas holiday game in many ways…special mentions go to Aaron Ramsey and Carlos Vela…you guys are going to be real, real stars….Denilson…never left Diop alone all game…well until he was stretchered off. Now…. interesting how Samir Nasri becomes much more effective with Vela and Ramsey on the pitch…very interesting…..MOTM…well it was close but for me it goes to the train driver who really did his parps as he went past the stadium just before the game….keep it going pal you are a real hero….and keep it going youngsters….you will prevail…6 league without defeat…oh yes..it is a good day to be a gooner.

…6 league GAMES that is…..from little acorns…..
By: Frank on December 28, 2008
at 5:48 pm
Agreed Frank – I’m just back from the game myself. The boys did really well and kept it going until we got our reward. Vela really made a difference when he came on, he seemed to give the whole team a lift with his running and won us a couple of corners as well as the free kick we scored from. I can see him making more and more appearances now that he has had his settling in period. He seemed to handle the physical stuff from the gigantic Portsmouth players okay (were they on steroids or something?) well.
A word for the defence – they marshalled Crouch really well today apart from that one chance that fortunately for us hit the post. I’m also pleased that TA left Defoe on the bench until late in the game as I’ve had enough of ex-spuds scoring against us lately.
By: Passenal on December 28, 2008

Someone at the game told me that RVP was injured in the warm up. Does anyone know if that’s the case? We’ll be running out of players soon!
For those of you hoping for a player in January – these are Arsene’s comments in the match programme:
” The transfer window opens next week and although we are not close to signing anyone at the moment, if we do buy I think what we need is maybe someone with a bit of experience.
We already have many young players, so if we buy it will be somebody who is ready to play straight away. A loan deal could also be a possibility.
Cesc is a long way from playing again, so are Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott, and these are three creative players that we count on at the start of the season. So what we might need is someone who can create a little spark”

Sounds like Arteta, Passenal.. but will Moyes sell him ? No..
Jimmy Bullard is definitely going somewhere tho’ – been linked with so many clubs…
But as we all know, AW will buy someone totally unexpected.. and make him a star!

Why is it that Arsenal seem to be held to a different standard than other teams? I’ve just seen a headline saying “Victory can’t mask Gunners’ problems”. Didn’t Man U just eke out an injury time winner against Stoke? And how many times have Chelsea and Liverpool done exactly the same? A victory like today was more important for us because we need to learn how to win ugly and to hang on to a narrow lead when the passing game isn’t working. Today was actually a huge step in the right direction. So Setanta can take their headline and shove it where the sun don’t shine!
By: Passenal on December 28, 2008
at 6:30 pm
Of course Passenal, either Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U are going to win the FA Cup, Champions League and/or premiership. Liverpool are fantastic, Manchester United will now roll their sleeves up and make up all 9 points from their games in hand, Harry Rednapp is the messiah, Chelsea are rock solid quality, only held up today, but will win their next 14 games. Arsenal of course, who are incapable of winning ugly, and going on an unbeaten run, because they need to do so, will slip further into the relegation zone.
By: Muppet on December 28, 2008

The media love their stereotypes for us. For years we were `lucky` Arsenal then `dirty` Arsenal & now we`re `brittle` Arsenal. No other teams get tagged like we do.

Bendtner really played better as a second striker. I always saw him working better with someone upfront rather than alone. He came deep in the half and made some good passes.
Adebayor, had an off game. I would be frustrated if he had drawn the game, would be cursing Ade for missing chances. But atleast some chances were made today. Something positive to take from today’s game.
And Vela was really good today. Had some poor touches and passes, but what amazed me was his crossing ability. Beautiful balls into the box. Really don’t see why Wenger refuse to play him on the wings, given that we had been lacking personel there. We could shift him back to his striker role, when players. He could only learn more from playing on the pitch.
Defensively we were quite sound today. Good tracking back by Denilson. Diaby didn’t have that good a game today though. Was really happy to see Ramsey throw himself into the tackles, and win a few.
By: Ateeb on December 28, 2008
at 7:08 pm
Wow, we’re being written off everywhere.
They’re saying we have no creativity. Think you need to have creative players available for that to happen.
And the team isn’t clicking? Well, no wonder. We’ve barely had the chance to field the same midfield twice all season.
The only thing that matters is this: 6 unbeaten games and counting. Our next league game isn’t for two weeks. Who knows could happen between now and then.
Let them disregard us, eh!
By: Big Al on December 28, 2008
at 7:17 pm
Ateeb, Vela needed time to acclimatise. He was not physically ready for the rough and tumble of the PL and I think Arsene is in a better position to know when a player is ready to be thrown into the game. There’s no point destroying a young player’s confidence before he is ready – it’s not like many fans are understanding and supportive in these situations. There is too much tendency to hype players up when they are not playing and then slaughter them when they do play and fail to live up to the unrealistic expectations. Just ask Nik Bendtner whom many said should replace Ade last season when his performances have shown that he is not quite the finished article.
By: Passenal on December 28, 2008
at 7:20 pm
Passenal: Van Persie was announced on the bench by the BBC 45 minutes before the start of the game, so if he injured himself, it was not on the warm up, and in that case it would be strange to have him on the bench. He maybe had a knock, but if he was fit enough for the bench, it was strange that Arsène didn’t consider him as an option with ten minutes to go and the match 0-0.
Maybe he was just rested and Arsène considered a fresh Vela would be a better option, which he probably ended up being. I hope so.

Imp win in whatever form after a string of draws it was a welcome 3 pts.
About AW comments on buying players, just saw the post match clip on sky, he admitted the squad was very thin at the moment & actually had a smile when he said “we are looking”. When specifically asked about Arshavin he didn’t deny it like he usually does when there is no substance but u never know with AW. As long as AW ensures that we are in the title race it doesn’t matter who he brings in.
By: Siva on December 28, 2008
at 7:22 pm
Passenal, I am not saying that Vela should have been introduced at the start of the season, but rather given a chance in the last 2-3 games, when we were lacking options on the wings. I get what you mean, with the physical side of the game. And judging from today, he is almost there. Was handling the physical side of the game quite well.
By: Ateeb on December 28, 2008

I thought diaby played okay today.
By: dukeGoonem on December 28, 2008
at 7:28 pm
I agree Ateeb and I made that very observation in an earlier comment. Arsene probably feels he is ready now and will probably use him more in the second half of the season. I don’t see how he would have made a difference at Villa as we were leading until injury time and he was not the right player to bring on in those circumstances. Also against Liverpool when we were down to 10 men, we needed the players with more experience of the PL to stay on and fight as they did.
By: Passenal on December 28, 2008
at 7:32 pm
and maybe wenger knows van pergkamp is injury prone and that 2 games in quick succession would increase the chance of injury. we need to wrap him in cotton wool and bubble wrap him for sure!

By: ponyboy on December 28, 2008

Passenal. disaggree about the Villa game. Vela should have been brought on for Nasri rather than Clichy. 6 defensive players were o the pitch, no wonder we kept losing the possession. And wenger has made this mistake before as well. We are not good at s itting backa nd defending with 10 men. By bringing pn defensive players you end up suffocating the attack, and in return have to face waves of attack f rom the opposition.

Ateeb that is easy to say with hindsight – had he come on and given the ball away for the equalizer, it would have been a different story. But this is an academic discussion now, since what happened happened, so we’ll never know.
By: Passenal on December 28, 2008
at 7:58 pm
dukeGoonem, that is exactly what happened: Wenger thought RVP was knackered after playing up front alone against Villa and worried about him picking up an injury with the cold.
I watched the game on a tiny internet feed which is clearly a disadvantage. But I thought that at very least Diaby was playing as a defensive shield. He wasn’t great, but it looked like a learning experience and he showed good discipline. A lot of good stuff came through Bendtner as well, which was good to see. Ade, on the other hand, seemed to have an afternoon to forget about. Strangely he looked tired despite the fact he hadn’t played on Friday.
By: California Gooner on December 28, 2008
at 7:58 pm
In my very umblest of opinions….RvP was rested…and he will get a rest against PA as well…which is good for him at this time of year…he has played his socks off recently….also it was important to give Nik Bendtner a game because he will be playing against PA…similalrly I expect Carlos and Aaron to start against PA….and so they both needed some match practice.
Little signs of a turnaround popping up all over ……enjoying your football is not all about watching your side win everything in sight….you have to watch them in adversity…and watch them dig themselves out of trouble….and support them all the way….and of course enjoy the spoils when they come…becuase they will have been earned.
It really is a great time to be a gooner…

Aneta perhaps you should read all the posts before you comment – I mentioned how well the defense (including Gallas) did to control Crouch.
I don’t know about his pace Jamie, but Crouch is about a foot taller than everybody on the pitch but he hardly won any headers. Gallas and Sylvestre used all their years of defensive know how to keep him out. It got to the point that he started complaining to the referee in hopes of getting something from a free kick.

But then I forget we’re not supposed to say anything here that has the slightest smidgeon of “negativity” for fear of upsetting the thought police. HI All
Watched the game yesterday. It was a snooze fest for the first half. Both teams played without any confidence. Ade needs to work harder, he was so poor and like some say here he looks tired. He appears to content to just go thru the motions.
Billy did us proud and despite all the adversity he has faced he has shown himself to be a fighter. He is is not captain material nor is he consistent and lacks a yard or two now adays but he does show character of a winner, something some of our youngster can learn from.
I know it is against Pompey only but I thot Denilson and Diaby did well on the defensive side of things but we need the attacking spark which is sorely missing now without Theo and Cesc.
But I am seeing more bites in tackles and less ball watching all round and more tracking back. All good signs.
I think Denilson was the man of the match for me but Vela and Ramsey needs to come on earlier. Vela was class and Rambo was a fighter.
Three points and a clean slate despite playing averagely.
We need reinforcements and Ole is right in that there is no point having Wilshire and others on the bench if you do not call upon them or do not trust them. We need a few seasoned players bought. Silvestre while criticised I thought did OK this match.
As for Toure, I think the malaria that he had is still affecting him physically and now mentally.
Lets get a run going and a midfileder and a CB.
Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

Your comment
“But I am seeing more bites in tackles and less ball watching all round and more tracking back. All good signs.”
Agree – some signs that these younger players are now realising that more focus on the unsexy parts of the game are fundamental to progressing to the highest level.
NIce to win 1-0 for a change – it’s been a while. I think that Arsene and this team are reassessing their cavalier approach – for the moment anyway with FAB and Theo out. You need to have sound foundations first.
I would like to see Nasri played more centrally – though I know that he drifts in anyway (he did so several times yesterday to good effect. It is also too early to expect him to carry the cause)
Vela must be given more game time at home particularly – bring him on on 60. He can make an impact.

I am not keen on Arshavin at 20m – and I don’t think that wenger would pay it. If he did it would smack of panic and totally undermine his credibility with me. Perhaps at 12m
For me, the main areas are Midfield and Centreback/Goalkeeper. It would have been Midfield and Centre back heretofore but seeing how shaky Almunia has been (and the progression of Djourou now that he has finally been given playing time) I would veer toward a Cm and GK if funds or the right available players dont stretch to 3 this window. Also buying 3 players in a pressure situation in this window puts a greater chance on one becoming a poor signing.
If Shay Given was free at a reasonable price, at 32 he would do a good job. I think that Brad Friedel would have been also a good buy at the price for a GK for a 2 yr period

Frankly what’s the deal with the guys here? Gallas scores a fortuitious goal that wins the game for us and we have people now saying “he should stay”, “make him the capi” or “he is the best CB by miles”
WTF?!? These are the same people who have critisized him a few weeks ago.
Goes to show how capricious we can be in our perception of players just based on a performance by them.
I do feel very relieved to see Gallas score to but it doesn’t hide the fact that we are sorely lacking in penetration in the match. But I do appreciate the 1-0 scoreline. I was like.. “Thank God! We didn’t mess it up this time!” when the ref blew his whistle.

Well Frank, I couldn’t agree more with you re-the much needed Arsenalisation of out stadium.
Graffit would be great but not many people would really get it. This is something that Ivan the First must address. I seem to remember the Club canvassing fans through the programme before we left Highbury; they wanted suggestions for names of bar areas and other areas in the ground but nothing has happened has it?
Whilst on the subject of Arsenalising the stadium can someone tell me how to contact RedAction so I can discuss some ideas for not only getting support going but also maintaining it throughout matches? I can’t be the only one wondering what tyhe relevance is of “stand up if you hate Tottenham” when the team are struggling against Bolton or anybody for that matter. Am I?

And re the last couple of matches – what alanG and Malaysiagunner said. The penny is dropping – you have to earn the right to play, as Stewart Robson is always saying.
@Poliziano – What is the special punishment meted out in the Hancock sketch? My curiousity has been piqued.
Been thinking, if we are the Thought Police, surely the other lot are the Taliban, or possibly the Puritans.
Rule 1 – No Enjoyment of Anything Arsenal Allowed.
Anyone discovered getting excited; being patient; being optimistic; showing themselves to be partial to a bit of the Arsenal; or generally not being a miserable git, shall be chained up in the stocks and pelted with rotten peaches (unless it is discovered that they are quite enjoying the experience, in which case another, less appealing, fruit shall be used), until they recant.

Going back to an earlier comment. I haven’t seen any sign that Gallas is likely to move in January. He’s been completely committed to Arsenal, and his goal yesterday was indicative of that. Taking the captaincy from him was as much a favour as a punishment. It appeased the media and his enemies among the fans, and has let him get on with his job. He wasn’t a player I ever thought much about, but I have rather begun to admire him now. Bonne chance!

I watched the game again today, and I really don’t think it was all that bad.
Pompey played very well defensively, and we didn’t want to get caught. I think the positives were, Diaby tracking back and taking care of his defensive responsibilities, Vela made a difference, Nasri even though was not so effective in being the creator, he was everywhere trying. Clichy was great till the last minute attacking any one coming his way. If you really watch closely, every one was trying to get the ball back once we lost it. At the end we got the three points, that’s the most important thing.
When I watched the game live, I was about to bang my head against the wall but I think that was just at the heat of the moment.
We definitely can build on this, with all the injuries and bad form…I think it was good enough.
I hope Wenger keeps playing Diaby in the FA cup as well as the league, he needs the games.
Keep it up Gunners.

G4E
I agree with your assesment and I think the lack of penetration on both sides comes from the lack of confidence in both defences and we were unable to hold on to our leads and they have been leaking goals. I have played football before albeit in schools and Sunday leagues but the basic principle is the same if your are not confident of your defence you dare not go forward and there isa general hesitancy in your play. Which was patently obvious in the first half for both teams.
But this has brought in a greater awareness from both Diaby and Denilson in their role as defence. Which may be a good thing in the long run as these two have a natural inclination to go forward but not tracking back.
Good to see Diaby tackling and hustling Pompeys midfielders and forwards.
Cesc in fact tracks backs more that Diaby does so does Song.
Yes we can build on these.
Up The Arse!!!

By: Luke on December 30, 2008

Steven Gerrard (MBE) could face five years in prison. The Sun seems to have the fullest report, although it could be completely fictional. The victim of the assault, it claims, pushed Gerrard, who in turn elbowed him in the face. One of Gerrard’s pals then smashed a bottle over the man’s head, and the whole lot of them (perhaps excluding Gerrard) gave him a kicking.

What’s the Arsenal discussion ?
I’ve seen plenty of Arsenal blogs arguing over the merits of Arteta or Arshavin. Surely the Arteta story is pants. Calvin Klein pants.

It’s boring getting a player from the Premiere League, so I’d probably prefer Arshavin to Arteta. I’m not sure Arteta would have a place in a fully-fit Arsenal side. In some ways, he’s an inferior version of Fabregas, although he does take a good free kick. So does van Persie, but he needs regular rests. I think Wenger might go for someone less well known, assuming he buys at all. We might have all our players back by the time the really tough games start – well, the ones in the league.

According to the BBC, we’re after:
Xabi Alonso
Yaya Toure
Andrei Arshavin
Matthew Upson
Brede Hangeland
Philippe Mexes
Giorgio Chiellini
Steven Mouyokolo
I don’t know if we’re supposed to be getting all of them. With Gerrard off to the slammer, there’s no chance of Liverpool letting go of Alonso. Matthew Upson seems very unlikely. Brede Hangeland? I’ve never even heard of the last three.
They don’t mention Inler, but our links with him have never gone away. I don’t know what kind of player he is, except that he plays in midfield. I’ve seen him described as “Udinese hardman,” but that’s probably just because he has a shaved head.

Well done for that article, Ole Gunner, if you’re reading.
*****
@ Ponyboy
Arshavin might not be a good buy for us purely because he doesn’t strike me as a fighter. Going on my extremely limited knowledge of him ie euro 2008. AND I think that anyone AW brings in for the first team has to be EPL-ready.
If by a “mixture of Cesc and Vela” you mean Arteta is speedy and tricky as well as creative, then that’s great. Is he cup-tied? And could we get him on loan, do you think?
@dukeGoonem
Someone researched the age thing on Vital Football and it would appear the cut-off age is 32, not 30. They don’t give anyone a contract which would end later than 11 months after their 32nd birthday. Or it might be 11 months after their 31st birthday, but anyway, the significant age is definitely 32, not 30.

By: Poliziano on December 30, 2008

And since we’re on the subject of looks, I have to say that is one area in which Wenger really has let us down in recent years. I mean, we lose Pires and get Hleb? Gallas for Campell? What’s that all about? It’s all very well signing players for their talent, but what about *talent*? Eh?
Answer me that if you can, M Wenger!

By: dukeGoonem on December 30, 2008

Well I would only get excited about Pires and Campbell, as I said. And Walcott and Vela are indeed very cute.
Glad you agree about Arshavin. I don’t want to be unfair, but euro 2008 could have been a big opportunity for him and he didn’t really take it.
By: FunGunner on December 30, 2008

Arshavin’s agent has been quoted as saying we were after Arshavin during the summer & now – sounds nothing like AW to me, remember the 1st words to Ade when AW called him to sign him was “a word about this & the deal is off”.

@dukeGoonem
If he found somebody really exceptional AND there was a big hole in the side which he would fit AND there was no-one coming up, yes. But I thnk it’s unlikely that ALL those criteria would be fulfilled.

“You can’t really say, though, that all Spain’s hopes rested on Fabregas’s shoulders.”
They did in the penalty shoot-out!
“In any case, we’re not going to buy a player as good as Cesc.”
Agreed. But you’re either tough like that or you’re not. Obviously not everyone in the squad will be equally tough, but given our uphill task for the rest of the season we need a fighter. Arshavin is a fantastic creative player, and I’m not suggesting that he totally lacks any grit or fight or whatever (I don’t know enough about him to speculate!). But we’ve lacked a sense of knowing that this is our time. Does that make sense? Jay Simpson has it – you don’t have to be Cesc-level ability to grasp your opportunities. I just can’t help feeling that Arshavin didn’t take his opportunity and at 26/27 years old, that counts against him somewhat.

Fact is, since Freddie (the swede we all want to eat) – there’s been no-one apart from Cesc whom the girls want to, er, play..”Find the net” with..
Then again, Manu Eboue… fun, classy and glassy.. mmmm. this much excitement can’t be good… but, hey, you only live a million times, watching the Arse.

Let’s hope for a resurrection in 2009 as 2008 was dismal but I am not that confident.
This lot are a joke and are getting worse-not better.
I read Ole Gunner’s article on Arsenvision which was a good one but it left out another media myth: that Arsenal play great football. They don’t. They are predictable and dare I say it dull to watch. How many goals have they scored recently?
Let’s hope we buy some players in Jan but I am not holding my breath.

Consols,
My view is more than “arguable”. Look at the league table and cry as I do. We have gone from Invincibles to virtual no-hopers in less than 4 years.
We have shown improvement in Europe – notably 2006 but then in 07 we lost to Pub SV and then threw it away at Anfield last season with a semi final place there for the taking.
If you can criticise my posts on AW’s failed experiment is that they were too positive, not the other way round.
I said that we would not challenge this year from the Prem and we would finish 3rd. I would say that this is an unlikely scenario now.
I had hope for the CL but well…
To say that my point have no basis is unfortunately wrong. I wish they had no basis but results since Feb last year prove otherwise as apart from ManU we have been dross in the league.
Too many talented players who are simply not ready to be first teamers in one of the biggest clubs in Europe. They needed to be bedded in with more experienced players around them which is what AW always did.
Not sure why he changed? Financial problems?Stubborness?
By: Alex Ice Cream on December 31, 2008

Consols,
Just for you.
I still love Arsenal and always will but this madness needs to stop soon. We need to build for next year. I believe that some players have enough talent to succeed but are struggling as they have no history of winning big titles. They lack guidance and experience.
This team is struggling and it seems obvious why. In a couple of years some of these players could be world-beaters but some will have fallen by the way-side.
I am just so angry that these problems were not sorted out in the summer.

I liked OleGunner’s take on all this AIC.
If you look at it a bit differently Wenger has not changed. He has always spent money sensibly and we have suffered terrible injuries. That can knock the stuffing out of any side. He is stubborn alright and I wouldn’t change him for anybody.
Having said that I don’t disagree that this present side, without the injured players, I mean, is not good enough to win the title or CL.
I just don’t agree that it makes any sense to go on about it. Supporting Arsenal, or any side, is more than about supporting a team that wins all the time.
Did you watch any of those dreadful sides from quite recent Arsenal history. I still used to go and support them. I never expected to win anything though.
They were Arsenal. I am Arsenal. We are Arsenal.
Should be enough for anybody.
