Cesc, Adebayor and Board Perspirations

Today is either going to be a good one for Arsene or horribly bad; there seems little chance of it being anywhere in between with the full extent of Cesc Fabregas‘ injury becoming clear. I suspect a week’s absence might be considered a ‘result’ even if it means missing the Villa match. Anything more than that and well, it is bad news.

There have been many criticisms of the squad this season but one of the more bizarre to be floated since Sunday is that the absence of a direct replacement for Cesc is a weakness. How on earth do you have such a player? And more to the point, how would Arsene be able to keep such a talent, not being able to offer him more than a dozen games in a season?

The replacement for Cesc comes in a change to the way in which the team plays; less reliance on one individual to perform and allowing two or three to take the strain. More, for example, will be expected of Samir Nasri creatively at Villa Park. Indeed, he has a crucial role to play in what I would expect to be a five-man midfield on Friday.

That match is starting to take on similar circumstances to the visit to Villa Park last season with Fabregas once more missing. Two defensively minded midfielders in the centre enabled a more attacking presence as a supporting striker. This time the forward line is weakended through Adebayor’s absence but van Persie (almost) mitigates that. It is a chance for Bendtner to put in a ‘big’ performance.

The Cesc injury has led to the spate of transfer speculation increases with Andrei Arshavin seemingly the number one target of those who have no more clue than you or I. Dovetailing with that is the speculation that Nicklas Bendtner turned down a move to Spartak Moscow, all of these fantasy transfers have to funded somehow, you know.

The ‘Knight on a White Charger‘ that Alisher Usmanov wishes to be seen as is an image to send shudders down the spine. He, however, has little intention of wading in with a wad to fund anything at the moment:

I am unlikely to at the moment because I have more important financial matters to deal with. But we have never concealed that we would like to acquire a blocking stake of up to 29.9 per cent and nothing prevents us doing that. That’s what interests us and, little by little, without hurrying, we are buying up shares from the market

Which nips in the bud the immediate newspaper speculation of a bid for the company. However, he does his bit of mischief making:

When, in the space of a year, four members of the board of directors are sacked, when the general director whom everybody has praised is changed, we consider that to be a huge matter — just to sack a major shareholder without. Mr Moshiri is now in London and is trying to find out the reasons for these sharp changes and according to what explanation we get, we will decide our strategy.

No doubt those explanations will reach the ears of waiting hacks to be twisted to suit their own purposes.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. What a rotten christmas we are having, heard somewhere that Cesc is out for 3 months!!!… whats the latest u have Yogi?

A win over Villa will be a big boost thought for our season and put us right in the mix of things.

  2. chrisGOONA,

Dont worry about Cescs injurys, we have world class replacement in Song. He’s better then Cesc will ever be

  3. Arsenal without Cesc will prepare us for next season when he will be wearing a Barca shirt

  4. Dont worry, Denilson is a world beater and Diaby is a real battler

  5. I believe it is The Sun that is speculating about three months. Until the extent of his injury is announced on the official site I would suggest ignoring the “informed” guesses of the media.

    YW

  6. I hope cesc is out for three months, it will give Eboue a run in the team, whos a real battler and will be a world beater if he could just learn how to play football

  7. BLESSING IN DISGUISE.

I personally think that the injury to cesc might be a good thing for him. I had remarked here before that he has had no real rest from last season because of the Euros. The time is being speculated at around 2 months, but I think its certainly going to be 1 month minimum because its knee ligaments.

He has been jaded for most of the season and this will give him ample time to recover. Despite media claims, I resolutely believe he will come back in much better shape and help us to eventually overturn villa and secure 4th spot.

    NO NEED FOR ARSHAVIN.

We have enough attacking midfielders. We just need a centre back and a DM of quality, if we are not to buy that, Just SAVE THE MONEY. A move for the russian would be disastrous for ramsey and wilshere.

By the way, too much has been made of referees and tackles from the liverpool game (I am sorry but alonso’s tackle was fair). Those are the least of our problems.. Lets move on!

    Cheers!

  8. Agreed Naga gunner

We dont need more attackers we need a DM and a commanding CH.Like we have needed all season

  9. naga gunner,

I hope that your PLAN WORKS.

Totally agree about Arshavin being VERY OVERPRICED.

It’d be better to SAVE THE MONEY AND SPEND IT ON CHRISTMAS GIFTS.

    Thankyou for your TIME

  10. We don’t need any players. We have quality everywhere. We have many players in all positions. If Cesc is out its fine as Diaby or Denilson can play that role.

We didn’t sell Diarra too cheaply. We don’t miss Hleb and Flamini as Nasri and Song are better.

We don’t need to spend money. Even if we did there is no-one out there who could possibly improve this team. No-one I tell you. Even if we have to pay £5 over the odds for someone its not worth it.

We can’t buy anyone as it would kill our players and we don’t want to pay for their funerals.

  11. Balls to you unhumourous doom-mongers. We have 7 points from 9 against the other big three, mostly with a depleted side. We can still beat Villa.

  12. Like the sarcasm guys… AIC and Arse21 bet you are loving it that Cesc has got injured, u both seem estatic!!

Any team that loses a player of Cesc’s calibre will suffer… we have been light in midifeld all season long i admit to that. Wenger didnt know what was happenning with Rosicky, he didnt know Walcott would be out for a few months, and he didnt know Nasri would pick up so many niggly injuries. I honestly believed we only needed a wide man before Cesc’s injury, as Diaby/Song/Denilson all can play next to him. But now Cesc is injured we need to put it into perpective and bring in someone who has a little know how in the centre of midfield. We cannot rely on Denilson, Song, Diaby, Ramsey to step up and save our season no matter hoe much they are improving. We need 1 player in CM with some experience if possible, plus a wide man to replace Rosicky. At the back we look fine unless Gallas wants out.

  13. Relentless negativity on here.

I think this team is well covered in most positions. Sadly our attacking midfielders keep getting injured though.

So, an extra playmaker is something we could probably do with. With Rosicky’s extended absence and the roughhouse tactics we face every week, injuries seem to be inevitable for these guys. It’s unfortunate, but no team can cope with that having that many players missing all the time.

Very often the injuries are inflicted with dodgy challenges. Two off the top of my head: Nasri vs Wigan and Hleb vs Villa last year.

  14. Oh come on Alex, we’re sorely missing Flamini & Hleb. We’re like a different team this season. I’m sure the players do too, on both a personal level & a professional level. Hleb gave the ball away alot but he was penetrative, we don’t have that at the moment. Denilson is playing out of position & Nasri is yet to adjust to the English game.
Diaby is too much of a wimp to be a premiership star player… I think AW needs to look at players with premiership experience.
There’s no doubt that Denilson / Song / Diaby are extremely talented players, however, they need time & they don’t have experienced players around them to learn from… if you think about the invincibles Vieira had Petit next to him, Henry had Bergkamp… Toure had Keown / Adams… Cole had the same… there’s a lack of experience in the side & its starting to tell.

  15. Possible team for Villa with all our injuries and suspensions dont look half bad…

    ———-Almunia————–
    Sagna-Gallas-Djourou-Clichy
    Eboue-Denilson-Song-Nasri
    ———–Diaby—————
    ———–RvP—————–

Ok Song and Denilson dont set the world alight in the CM, but considering all our injuries… we still have Diaby, and Nasri to pull the strings and give us some creativity.. we should beat Villa.

Also: Wenger can choose to use Ramsey/Vela/Wilshire… which looks unlikely by his team selections. We still have options is my point, no matter how much some of you seem to despise our players!!

  16. Nasri is a good replacement for cesc.let nasri start from the middle and denilson and eboue on the flank.i dont think we will have problem at villa park.Guners 4 life………….

  17. Song and Denilson are very good players, Chris. They’ve been two of our best this season. The midfield you’ve got is pretty much how I see it – with Eboue on the right it’s got a good balance to it.

  18. Is sarcasm the new post ironic humour?

    Is Usmanov a ghastly parasite?

    Do they know it’s Christmas?

Always the same between matches. Lots of time to say not very much.

  19. Chris GOONA

Its a bit early to be on the sherry isnt it?

Diaby to pull the strings. How many times did he give the ball away v Boro and Liverpool?

That midfield you have picked has no pace at all so who is going to help RVP upfront?

You have taken red tinted glasses to a higher level.
What next we will win the title?

  20. chrisGOONA,

Thats a team of world beaters if ever I saw one.

Diaby playing in the hole behind RVP, pulling the strings, probing Villa defence using his wide range of passing and pace

  21. Another reason to be optimistic yet in a depressing way… If we took our chances against Middlesbrough and Clichy’s clearance didnt drop for them plus Ade not getting sent off when we were on top of Liverpool we would be sitting 3 points off top!!!! Imagine if a couple of the wonderstrikes from Hull or Stoke didnt go in also.. we will be sitting very pretty now indeed. Will you all be bitching then about Song’s hair, Eboue’s theatrics, and Wenger’s team selections? The answer is no.. luck will come our way, and the team is starting to click back into gear. 3 points against Villa and things are certainly looking up.

  22. chrisGOONA,

And imagine if West Ham had won all there games this season, thaey would be top of the league and above us and would be laughing.

Imagine if Santa brings me the bike I wanted. He better the fat bastard.

  23. Chris goona

That looks a sensible side, Particularly if Diaby could show some of the excellence he promised last season.

As a sceptic I am becoming tired of the same old criticisms being made of our players.

They may not be all worldbeaters but what is the point of banging on and on and on about it?

We are what we are. A great football club with one of the best managers in the world.

The world will turn and we will be conquerers again.

  24. PSB & Arse21

You can look at Arsenal and life in general in as dark a light as you want. No matter how much you try to depress me in trying to make me believe that are team is shi** you will not succeed. You can dream all you want about Arsenal slipping down the table, your support for the team and the club is overwhelmingly crap. Yes i have said many time we need reinforcements, especially to replace Rosicky and a strong CM… but to dismiss our players after beating the likes of Man U, Chelsea, holding off Liverpool comfortably with 10 men.. it shows you the quality is there in light of all the injuries to key players of our squad.

You can all mock the team all you like.. i just dont see what you are trying to achieve… maybe some more booing to destroy another players confidence maybe??

  25. So Arse21

Why dont you go support them then, that will make my christmas seeing the back of supporters like you.

  26. ChrisGOONA,

Its just that I know you hate me criticising anything Arsenal so I thought I’d go the other way and be extremely optimistic but you dont like that either. Maybe the best option would be to gag anyone who doesn’t agree with you, and stop them from talking, even on faceless blogs, maybe even in there own homes. No one must criticise the team. Never !!!!!!!!!

  27. chris,

Your suggestion that Arse21 and I are glad that Cesc is injured is deeply offensive.

I don’t usually say this but you are an absolute **** if you honestly believe this. I don’t think you do though.

  28. Rev,

    Sarcasm

  29. Chris

Looking at the side, I cannot see it being the one fielded. Wenger will play Bendtner if he is available simply to add some ‘presence’ up front. Whether the Dane delivers is another matter…

    YW

  30. Arse21,

That’s how its gone on this blog I’m afraid – people being put off expressing views. Many people who used to be on here regularly post very seldom or not at all.

I will not be gagged however. I look forward to watching more of our midfield labours now that Cesc is out which of course you and I are “ecstatic” about.

  31. Whoosh goes the point.

  32. AIC,

I know, whats crazier is the brainwashed people on here think its normal not to disagree with eachother. What planet do they think were on?

  33. AIC,

You sound like you’re relishing the prospect of Arsenal struggling. Disappointing.

  34. Arse21

Healthy contructive criticism is the way forward, but when i read a hundred comments per day with so called fans calling our players donkeys, wanks etc… there are many more insulting phrases i can assure you. It makes me sick quite frankly. Cesc hasnt played well this season, only recently since receiving the armband he has looked a little like the Cesc of old. Yet who was name calling him???… I dont like it when fans jump on the bandwagon and insult our players for simply the fun of it, becuase it has proven to only contribute to the downfall of team moral. I see you as part of that mob, and your attitude which is as if you feel you can insult our players and feel you have a right to is wrong my freind.

    AIC

I dont mean to offend you on a personal level, i dont comment on this blogg to start arguements, i care for my club.. and i believe Wenger is trying to put together another great team and is on the verge of it. I agree with your views on bringing in a few experienced players.. but when you start slagging the current players who are battling for us week in week out you should question your own loyalty to the club.

Slagging off is on a completely different level to what you think your right to criticising the team is. Ive heard many many personal forms of abuse to our players, it aint acceptable.

  35. I actually do not think that, taken over the past few months, the views of Chris Goona and AIC are that far apart.

There are more extreme optimists and far more extreme doubters. Both make sensible points.

There, I will probably upset both of them now!

We are one. We are The Arsenal.

  36. YW

Bendtner brings a different option to our front line, but he has looked really out of sorts. Dont know if Wenger has the trust in him to deliver in such a big game against Villa. I think he’d rather go for the 5 man midfield and try keep possession, i could be wrong though. Really wish he used Wilshire for the last 15mins or so of games just to get him some action. He looks so comfortable on the ball and able to produce some magic in the final third. Ramsey also should be getting more minutes.

  37. Alex Ice Cream!

    @10:50 am

I think we need to spend some money but not in the positions that we can cope. I dont think we should buy for the sake of it.

I agree, we definitely need strengthening but NOT in the attacking positions and certainly not with big time charlies like arshavin.

There are glaring holes at CB and DM which need to be plugged with quality which would most probably come at a price, which, I agree, should be shelled out.

    cheers!!

  38. Consolbob

I’m not too sure about that! Nice try in the peace keeping attempt matey.

  39. chrisGOONA,

If I say ‘Diaby is pony’, I mean ‘Diaby is not very good’, its just the way I talk I dont make up them words especially for them players

  40. Naga

I really dont see a need for a CB, then again me and you always seem not to see eye to eye. With Toure, Djourou, Gallas, and Silvestre we have 4 very capable players, nobody can disagree with that!

DM we just need some experience to come in and help the likes of Song, Denilson groom into better players and someone they can learn from.

We need a winger… that should be our main concern in January. Diaby and Denilson being forced to play on the wings just tells its own story.

  41. Naga Gunner MATE……

Don’t actuall agree with you, in all seriousness, I agree with others who are calling for width.

NOT because Wenger doesn’t have the right personnel in terms of Rosicky, Nasri, Walcott and Eboue, but because, unfortunately, Rosicky, Nasri and Walcott seem to spend a lot of time in hospital. The alternatives don’t have real cutting edge in those positions – e.g. Diaby, Denilson etc etc…

I think Song, Denilson are doing well in the CM.. although others disagree.

Therefore, I believe Arshavin would be a much needed signing.

  42. chris GOONA!

I guess have agreed that we will never agree about our CB situation a while ago. W

  43. It weirds me out that everyone has been calling for more width yet when a world class winger/centre attacking midfielder is linked to us everyone says we don’t need him.

Look, we all know we need a strong central midfield player but we would surely all love to see a player of Ashavin’s quality playing for the Arsenal.

He is the sort of signing that will lift the entire squad and fans, it would also send out the message that, despite the reports, we have money and we will spend it on pure quality.

The thought that it would be a disaster for Ramsey and Wilshire is nonsense. Ashavin is 27 meaning that by the time he is 31 Ramsey will be 21 and Jack 20. Both will then have learnt from playing with such a highly talented player.

It can only be a good thing in my opinion, although I would like to know whether we would settle for losing Kolo to fund it.

Why has Kolo not been moved into the DM position he could surely play this role effectively especially as he now isn’t first choice for CD.

  44. Muppet!

I agree with you and chris, that we do need width, but arsene has never been keen on wingers. Look at bobby and freddie, IMO they were both essentially CMs playing wide. It seems arsene likes them cutting inside, which does cost the team tactically, by becoming too narrow. Overmars was the last of them.

I dont think arshavin is a natural winger either, and the price is sure to be above 20 million, Dont you guys think that would be better spent on someone like zapata?

Its that I firmly believe that great teams are built on great defences, and I seriously think if we rectify our defensive problems, the existing forward players in the squad are good enough to score atleast one goal in every match about 95% of the time in a season, as was the case last time out.

In simple words, more 1-0’s whilst not playing well!

    Cheers!!

  45. Drew10!

Its just me who is saying that we dont need him!

  46. Chris GOONA

The problem with your views is you are too optomistic.
Last season we finished 3rd with a much more superior team than we have now.Helb,Flamini,Gilberto and Diarra were not replaced and a CH we have all been crying out for was not purchased in the summer
I am just being realistic we are in 5th place for a reason. We have not been good enough. The table does not lie.

If you are happy to see a midfield of Diaby Song Denilson and Nasri good luck to you

I dont want to see us playing EUFA cup football on a thursday night next season like the Spuds

  47. Chris Goona, if I was you I would just ignore you know who because he is obviously a spud on a wind up. The clue is in the name and if that is not confirmation enough – the overwhelmingly negative and abusive posts about our players and the wishing that we do badly without Cesc is the nail in the coffin no matter what he might claim. At least AIC is a part-time Arsenal fan.

  48. Ole,

I will treat your comment @11.54 with the contempt that it deserves.

    F*** O**

Why is your name that of an ex-Manu player anyway?

  49. Naga,

    I see what you mean.

Well… I didn’t mean out and out wingers. Perhaps players with more flair that can be effective out wide, and with some panache. Wilshere fits into that category. I think Arshavin does. I don’t know much about Zapata ? Who does he play for ?

  50. Would we be happy to lose Toure for Arshavin?

  51. Passenal,

AIC is a part-time fan. Oh yes, as if you have the right to decide who is and is not a fan!

I don’t usually do this but these responses are worthy of no more.

Who the f*** are you to tell me I am a part time fan.? Oh I don’t have the blind optimism that you have and have my own mind to make opinons so I am not a fan.

I bet I have been a supporter (or fan as you know it as) longer than you, have been to more games and put more effort and money into supporting the team than you.

You are so arrogant in that you think you have the right to pass judgment on people because of what they write on blogs. What nonsense!

So far – just today – I have been accused of wanting us to lose, of enjoying Cesc’s injury and now I am not a fan because you say so. This is just laughable.

Its clear that your football knowledge extends to blind optimism and little else.

Good to know the thought-police are still in force so this one’s for you:

We will not win the league this year and some of the players are just substandard and it is doubtful that they will ever be good enough.

“Full-time” “fans” ie blind optimists are actually doing more harm than good by thinking everything is all right as nothing will change.

Maybe you’ll change opinion when if are playing UEFA Cup football next season. Maybe you wll realise that something is wrong.

Maybe you haven’t woken up to the fact that since 04 we have had 1 decent season in the league and a number of substandard ones by AW’s standards. We challenged every year before and now you lot are happy to finish 4th or even lower.

Maybe its your low expectations of a club that used to be on top domestically have changed as you cannot accept that domestically we are miles behind where we used to be. Its not an opinion, its fact and the league tables from 2004-5 onwards prove this.

  52. Naga Gunner,

Good point about Wenger and wingers. Just to add to what you say; Wenger doesn’t play wingers he plays left midfield and right midfield. To think of them as wingers would be to completely misunderstand what role they have. The traditional role of the winger is one who stays wide, and whose goal is to get to the byline, and in behind the full back.

    Wenger’s wide men are creative players who do 4 things;

    1. Create play from the wings.
    2. Make diagonal runs to get into goalscoring and attacking positions.
    3. Provide defensive support for the full back to enable him get in behind the full back and close to the byline.
    4. Help the team keep defensive shape when we dont have the ball.

The last winger we had was Marc Overmars. The likes of Super Rob, Ljungberg, Parlour, Rosicky, Hleb are all converted central players.

We do need a wide player IMO. We don’t have enough creativity in midfield and that’s a fatal flaw in a side that tries to play like we do.

  53. Passenal,

I assume you’re talking about me? At least have the balls to speak to me then, you whingey little girl.

You think anyone who says what I do doesn’t support Arsenal? Well all that proves is how detached you are from reality and how little you know about your own club

  54. You guys are all so immature all this back biting is stupid.

Don’t turn what is the most level-headed group into the same as all the other twatty blogs out there.

  55. Ole,

The last winger we had was Reyes, unless you count Eboue last year.

  56. Is it fair to say that you’re anal retentive, Alex Ice Cream?

  57. Arse21,

I agree. We are not fans as we don’t think that we will win the Treble this year.

    What bollox.

  58. Surely Reyes was a whinger?

  59. drew10,

If people are going to accuse me of enjoying Cesc’s injury what do you expect?

  60. drew10,

Yes he was but we got £8m for him!

  61. Naga,
I can’t see how a Mexican revolutionary will help us. He’s dead, anyway.

  62. Poliziano

    Relevance?

  63. Some things don’t deserve a response.

  64. AIC,
When you are so quick to defend people who hate Arsenal, you can hardly be surprised if they draw negative conclusions about you.

  65. We have plenty of whingers on this blog.

  66. Cesc out for four months it seems!

  67. Whats wrong with you people. Do you think Man Utd fans, Tottenham fans, West Ham fans, Chelsea Fans dont have a go at there team. Down the pub, if you think a players shit, you say he’s shit, whether he plays for you or not. Its just part of Football banter, it doesn’t mean anything because players come and go and get well compensated financially to be criticised.

It makes me wonder if half the people on this blog a) Have ever been to a game & b) Have grown up in London

  68. I agree with Passenal’s assessment of you as a part-time fan, Alex Ice Cream. You are different from PSB, Howard, and Arse21 – full-time haters of Arsenal; but we have all seen the proof on this very blog that you only support Arsenal on occasions.

  69. cesc is out for up to 4months wenger just said on sky, sais he might buy a new player, Iam not convinced he looked very shifty when asked

  70. Where did you see that, Naga?

  71. Muppet!

He is christian zapata, a 6.2 columbian centre back plays for udinese. I am not saying he will certainly be the answer, but he does LOOK the part.

    Check him out!

  72. Muppet!

and yes I forgot, udinese was willing to let him go for 15 million. We reportedly had a 10 million bid rejected for him last summer. Perhaps speculation, but I have a feeling wenger is not a stranger to him!

  73. Bollocks – Cesc is out for the season it seems. Now we def need some cash spent.

  74. Samui gooner,

Wenger does not want to announce to the world that he wants to buy a new player.

If he does this, all the directors of clubs will be rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of a big fat pay day, in the middle of a global downturn. The Zenit director is already asking for £20M. Other club directors will be looking forward to his phone call.

Or would you rather he announces to all the fans his intention to buy somebody, so you know about it advance ?

  75. Naga,

Interesting.. does this mean you don’t want to pursue things with Djourou ?

  76. cesc out 4 months – is that season over for us?

  77. Poliziano,

You’re such an Idiot its so funny

  78. Poliziano,

I refer you to my post at 1.16. It applies equally to you.

  79. The truth hurts, huh?

  80. Cesc out for 4 months. That’s April which gives him no time to get match fit.

Realistically he’s out for the season.

What is it with these injuries?

  81. It certainly hurts you.

  82. BengalGooner,

Of course it isnt season over, we’ve got Song for gods sake.

The fricken SONG’S gonna be running the show, He better then Cesc and uglier to scare defences, he even laughs when he comes on as a sub in a game which we need to win. He’s the bomb. If we buy anyone it’d be a waste of our money, personally Id rather AFC spent our money on more stewards to stop us standing up or waving flags.

    Take a bow – THE SONG !!!!!!

  83. Arse21,

Funny but its not Song’s fault.

AW put too many players in at once who were not ready. Song has done quite well but no more. At the moment he’s functional rather than putstanding.

  84. Well, Arse21, you’ve got what you wanted for Christmas.

  85. Asked about Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andrei Arshavin, Wenger added: “At the moment nobody is going out and nobody is coming in.”

  86. BengalGooner,

From that response we can deduce that he is going to attempt to sign the player.

  87. Muppet!

I like Djourou, and I see him as the perfect second choice behind a world class defender in our team. For a team which aspires to go toe to toe in the league and UCL, there needs to be decent back ups for the long and arduous season and djourou will be perfect for that.

  88. Poliziano,

Actually. believe it or not, I haven’t.

I’m absolutely shitting myself, were f*cked.

I dont rate any of our other midfileders except for Nasri and Rosicky who are injured.

We need to buy at least one midfeilder with proven quality if we are to grab fourth, at least one, maybe three

  89. I’ve got a question – our wage bill is £100m similar to Manu – who the hell are we spending these wages on apart from big wages for cesc, gallas, adebayor ??????????????????? We do seem to have high wage bill for an above average (but definitely not the best)squad

Also ever since the season we sold viera – i dont think arsene has spent his transfer budget – i wonder if he has to sell to buy , and maybe thats why Edelman was sacked – Arsene said no more.

    We sold following
    Viera -£13m
    Henry-£16m
    Reyes-£6-9m
    Hleb-£12m
    money from bentley,muamba,hoyte,larson,diarra,
we should have loads of money to spend

  90. Bengal,

That wage bill cover all employees of which there are over 100. Its is not just player wages

  91. BengalGooner!

    Too many wonderkids!

  92. AIC
the £100m supposedly same as ManU – still quite high for what we ‘ve got.

  93. I was onboard with most ppl (& AW I guess) when we wanted to buy a midfielder & a CB during the summer. Now with Cesc’s 4 month absence some are calling for 2 midfielders though I kind of understand where most ppl are coming from I still wonder what the fuss is about buying replacements. Yes, he is world class, our captain & by far the most experienced midfield player but though most have just whispered it, wasn’t he having a very avg session (by his own high standards) except for couple of games?

In the game against Liverpool, we did seem to play pretty well with Cesc not around & a man down. Like when many attacking midfielders & strikers had an opportunity to express themselves more/better on the pitch when TH14 left, Cesc absence seemed to allow Song, Denilson to come to life than be over run. I’m not saying we wouldn’t miss Cesc or we don’t have to buy a replacement. If we still buy someone like Alonso like we were planning to during summer, I don’t see a problem with Cesc absence affecting our eventual position on the table.

I only wonder who would captain the side in Cesc’s absence, the band was given to Almunia. He has the experience & has been having a good session but with only the captain allowed to speak (protest!!) to the ref about his decisions or influencing play a GK is not the ideal choice, especially considering the not so commanding presence of Almunia. Maybe if it was (Mad) Jens…!!

  94. Yogi, time to exercise Moderation please…

the overall tone has changed, infinitely for the worse…

much of the charm and pleasure you have so assiduously created for your subscribers is being swamped…

as another publication would say, bin them.

  95. Buying in January – It’s not just a matter of money – it also depends on who is available that hasn’t already played in ECL. There won’t be many that are good enough. I don’t share the low opinion expressed often here of some of current squad. I think the main problem is that there are too many young players out there together and now that Cesc is out for the season, we need experience, because the in-house options are even younger. But I have no suggestions. And please don’t go on about all the players you think AW should have bought in the summer – he didn’t, end of story.

  96. Getting players from foreign leaques and expecting immediate impact is not possible.
In that regards, the best option for me is to recall Traore to cover LM if possible and get Elano from ManCity. He is very good playmaker and also a RM. I don’t understand why Mark Hughes doesn’t play him, although I’m sure he knows better than me. A bit worried about him being a “disturbing influence” in the dressing room, though.

  97. exclusive news we gonna sign Daniel Karbassiyoon

  98. Astute point about wide players earlier, Ole.

We are missing some creativity right now, but it really is just down to injuries. I can’t believe Rosicky’s been out for a whole year. That’s a key creative player, and it’s just too long – perhaps there’s some kind of contingency now.

It’s galling to think what we could have done with him and Dudu around.

Meanwhile Nasri and Walcott have had problems as well.

It could yet be an interesting January. I just hope people keep cool though, and don’t lose sight of the quality we already have in our squad.

  99. I think our priority for this season should be qualifying for the champions league. its going to be very difficult for us to win something this season so many players injured.
I think Arsene if he does buy players he do so with the future in mind especially next season. According to Arsene himself it takes a player six months – so let him use jan to may to settle new buys for next season. just my opinion.

  100. ToughCookie,

True about Foreign Players but we dont have the money to buy a good english player, not for a few years anyway

  101. bengalgunner are u from india??

  102. London

  103. wat abt ur name bengal ??? just curious

  104. hey guys i have a new blog going u can take a look and let me know wat u think of it…. http://creme-dela-preme.blogspot.com

  105. Buy Barry

  106. ……..and Laursen and Young

  107. delano walters,

I’ve had a look, its shit

  108. buy elano he will be cheap

  109. The quality of the squad is high but the consistency is just not there yet. There is still time, however, and it would be foolish to write the season off now. We’re not far behind Liverpool and Chelski and still in the UCL and FA cup. I do wonder, however, what Wenger’s motivations are for the rest of the season. Privately I’m worried that his priority will become to qualify for the UCL for next year. January will shed some light on this and I would be willing to bet that no one is bought in the transfer window, especially if we beat Villa.

  110. Most of the players being suggested wouldn’t get into our Carling Cup team.

Ashavin is a good player, but he does seem to disappear in a lot of matches.

  111. delano walters – don’t listen to arse21 – he thinks he’s funny.

  112. Why is Arse-shavings the answer? Why spend £20m on a player who had 2 good games in the Euros. Sperz spent 15m on his mate Roma who hasn’t done a lot.

Its not Aw’s style to spend £20m on a player with no resale value.

20m for Arse-shaver is way too much anyway.

  113. Injuries have cost us from Eduardo onwards – i dont know how you solve this but one after the other then you have RvP and nasri who seemto be injured every couple of games

  114. A lot of men shave their bodies these days.

Ashavin played well in the UEFA cup as well, but he wouldn’t be my first choice.

  115. Oh come on – Silvestre is well past his sell by date… if he wasn’t Fergie would have held on to him – he’s very good at that.
If Gallas is goes in January (which is highly likely) we’ll need another CB for sure.

  116. Cesc out for 4 months… yikes

  117. Actually, there is a silver lining to Cesc’s injury; he can go back to Spain and relax..recharge his batteries – AW will simply have to buy quality players ( Arshavin would fit right into the team IMO ) – and Almunia as captain might get full confidence and stop looking so scared..
Still, it’s a shit thing to happen; have we EVER had an injury list like this ?
But feeling positive ! Then again, the opium helps..

  118. Delano Walters – an ok blog..but, man, the typos..
Opiate squill linctus btw.. Like laudanum, but legal. One day, everyone on here will agree – and how dull will that be ?

  119. poliziano,

I think your being out of order to AiC. how can you say he is a part time gooner? no one on this blog is part time, obviously we all have the same passion for the arsenal or we wouldnt be on here.

you are very quick to slag off your fellow gooners, you wouldnt do it in the pub if someone said anything negative about the team so why all the fighting talk on this blog!!

the truth is cesc out for 3 months is a big fukin blow , our only experienced midfielder is now out, so what do you expect, you still expect nothing but optimism? its asking alot to be nothing but optimistic after this.

  120. peter storey’s budgie should change his name to peter storey’s ass, then get with arse21 and f0ck themselves up when they are done, they should both join with aic and f0ck him up. they all seem to love each other so much. also why arse21 & aic post one minute apart on more than one occasion? are they the same dump ass?

  121. You’re being very naughty today, dukeGoonem.

  122. add dukegoonem to the mix.
Poliziano can focking say what he wish.
dump ass arse21 is not a gooner
dump ass psb is not a gooner
dump ass aic is a part time gooner

  123. The Cesc news is terrible. He was just beginning to get going again.

Sometimes surprising things happen against expectations.

Step forward Diaby, Song, Denilson, Eboue

  124. Enough abuse on this site,

    Disagree with one another, yes.

    Abuse one another, no.

    We are all Gooners here.

  125. no we are not, wake up bob…this site is fested with dump ass worms like arse21 and his dingle berries

  126. Well said, Dump Ass Supporters Group.

I’m sure all the men on this blog are commanding figures at their local pubs, and that no one dares say anything against them.

Alex Ice Cream had “slagged off” Passenal, who is one of my favourite contributors on this blog. I felt he deserved a reply. You will observe that this happened before we had news of Fabregas, which in any case is irrelevant.

Do you really think that everyone on this blog has exactly the same passion for Arsenal?

  127. duke,

Well said. Stranding up to the Thought-Poliziano is a dangerous occupation though.

  128. I know I’m late to the party, such is life 8 hours behind London time.

Does anyone else see parallels to the 2006-07 season? Henry and RVP were injured for long stretches, this year it’s Walcott and Cesc. Julio Baptista was toothless in front of goal, now it’s Bendtner. Both squads were also wildly inconsistent, playing brilliant one week and then losing to Fulham the next. I fully expected Arsenal to build on last season’s success, but what if last year was the anomaly? I just can’t figure this squad out.

  129. Poliziano,

Unless you, Passenal and others I am not arrogant enough to be able to decide what constitues a supporter.

I only went back to Passenal as she said I was a part-timer which made me laugh.

  130. “Standing up to the Thought-Poliziano is a dangerous occupation though.”

Not as dangerous as dukeGoonem’s local pub.

  131. supporter |səˈpôrtər|
    noun
1 a person who approves of and encourages someone or something (typically a public figure, a movement or party, or a policy) : Reagan supporters | supporters of the boycott.

  132. poliziano,

Strangely i do, but i think some people are just natural pessimists. I do agree though that when someone just spouts the same negative crap then they do become a pain in the arse.

  133. Merry Christmas, dukeGoonem.

  134. This is getting confusing. Didn’t the avatar of DASG used to belong to Howard?

Who is taking the P*ss out of who?

Just going to lie down for a bit.

  135. No, Howard was a smiling triangle with a flat base.

  136. Doh!!

  137. howard smiling!! only whilst watching the begining of schindlers list!

  138. aic,,,,Passenal is right your a part time fan why hide the truth? u like arsenal when things r good & hate arsenal when things r bad.

    u r arrogant…
    u r shit…
    we don’t need u twit.

  139. howard,,,yuck,,,throwing up

  140. big al define the following too

    glory hunter
    doomgloomer

  141. Paulie

“step forward Diaby, Denilson, Song Eboue”

    Oh f**k

  142. All this hostility is a reaction to a desparate situation. AW is still the best option, but, let’s face it, we have gone backwards in the last 4 years.

  143. This is laughable really.

Jamie, can you explain exactly how did we go backwards when the season is not over yet?

  144. Jamie,

I was a little tongue in cheek perhaps but you never know some people may just put their hand up.

If truth be known I bet AW is flapping too.

A paper thin unbalanced squad riddled with injuries has left him relying more on hope than expectation.

  145. Hi, everyone

@Arse21 – slagging a player off in the heat of the moment in a pub is different to doing it on a blog because a) what you say in a blog is not a private conversation – it’s written down and disseminated to thousands of people – and b) insults in print always sound much ruder and more hurtful.

    @AIC
I think “part-time fan” was intended as a backhanded compliment. Offended by the suggestion or not, you DO come across like that. You’ve told us you don’t identify with the current squad, but as the Invincibles are no longer with us, how about getting behind the team as it is? Even the Invincibles were a few years in the forming, and after they reached their peak, they were by no means perfect. Once people figured out how to play them – ie don’t even try to play, just defend – they struggled. And the context of their success was different – bluntly put, the league was less competitive then.

You seem to have a very low opinion of our players – it seems to really hurt you if anyone praises them. A recent example is your reaction to AW saying that he thought the current bunch of players was as good as the Invincibles. You were not the only person to disagree (which is your prerogative) but you were actually offended by the comparison. That speaks volumes.

There’s no reason why anyone should like every single thing about every player, about the set-up at Arsenal, about Arsene. But you don’t seem to like ANYTHING – except Cesc. It’s not that you criticise, it’s that you do nothing BUT criticise. There’s nothing sinister about people disliking that in a fellow fan, is there? A person feels whatever they feel, thinks whatever they think, but you can’t act shocked and offended if people make reasonable inferences from what you say. If I claimed to be your best friend but when you lost your job, I did nothing but bitch about you, and then boasted about you if you then got a better job, you would be entitled to question the quality of my friendship, wouldn’t you?

I accept that you are not happy about Cesc being injured. But I think you ARE happy about the adverse effect on the team of his absence, because you think this is more likely to make you right about the dimness of our prospects.

    ****
Four months out is a huge blow, but there may be silver linings to that cloud. I’m going to look for inspiration to the exploits of the Oxford University Boat Race crew of 20 years ago, who won against all the odds.
    Up the Arsenal!!!

  146. G4E

Up until last 3-4 years, never out of top 2. Last silverware, 2005 FA Cup won with a little luck against United. Win title in 2004 now in 5th place with midfield of Eboue, Song, Diaby, Denilson, Nasri. Do you need me to remind you of the midfield we had a few years ago. A rock solid defence then. now…Almunia and Silvestre. Is this laughable?

“A team of potential”. Let me remind you, potential is in the future, not the here and now. Too many injuries, too often. See Paulie’s last comments.

Speaking the truth doesn’t man you’re not a “true” supporter. First game, 1970. Never booed an Arsenal player. Still want AW, but want him to recognise some mistakes and rectify them.

  147. Well said FunGunner.

  148. Paulie,

Couldn’t agree more, his demeanour (spelling?) and responses in press conferences tell you everything. His positive comments are designed to bolster confidence rather than a reflection of his true feelings.

  149. So basically we are going to play without the midfield that was on the pitch last season. Cesc, Flamini, Rosicky, and Hleb. Interesting. But judging from the players we have at the moment, we could cope, if they all fulfill the potential they have. Talent wise, Denilson, Walcott, Song, Diaby, and Nasri are quite exceptional. The question however is if they are good/experienced enough to win the league on their own, without the compatriots of last season alongside them. Logic suggests it would be too early for them to pull of the title, however it would be unwise to predict/judge football with logic alone. For we have been proven wrong many times.

  150. I think the key is if Eduardo and Rosicky can come back, and Diaby can get a consistent run in the team. The doomers have slagged off Diaby in the last 2 games, forgetting that he had just come back from injury and was short of match practice.

  151. Thanks for the support Poliziano, and Fungunner, thanks for your very sensible comment. My ‘part-time’ comment was meant tongue in cheek, but as you can see AIC, when things are written down they have a way of slapping you in the face without intent, much like your comments might read to supporters who actually like our players, or to the players themselves were they to inadvertently see or be made aware of them.

  152. Jamie, first of all I didn’t say you’re not a supporter.

Why do we always skip the fact that we are building a team from the ground up since 2006 with basically no funds?

So we went down to 4th..big deal, bring out the knifes. It’s called top 4 for a reason…because there are or were top 4 teams in England. It doesn’t take anything from us being 4th for a couple of seasons, then 3rd, this season is not over yet. What’s the big deal? No one is invincible forever…if you didn’t learn that form history, no one can help you.

The only difference is either people are willing to spend so much money for players who are not worth it and no guarantee of success (Reyes comes to mind).

Or they don’t understand Wenger after all these years, and may never will. The man doesn’t believe in buying players just because things are not going well. Watch 2002 season and you will understand it’s not about buying players, in that season we lost many games at home, we drawn games and yet we still won the double. We didn’t buy a player every time we lost a game!

Things are different now because you have filthy rich people like Ibramov and Osmanov, and sheiks wearing gowns who are willing to buy the title for 300 million (A chunk of change).

Example: Robinho, do you really think this guy is worth 32 million? Only an idiot sheik who doesn’t even know how much money he has would pay that.

We fans are struggling between two ideologies. Spend like every one else and buy a title and make me happy, the other understands to build a great team with no money, it takes time. Which one are you? And are you willing to wait?

It’s the time of difficulties when you really know your friend from your 50-50 friend and we are watching it unfold right here on this blog. It’s a disgrace.

Am I happy with everything going on with Arsenal right now? Absolutely not, will I slag off my players day in and day out, absolutely not.
    ===

Sorry Jamie, this not is not just about what you said, but about what I read here today.

  153. Muppet,

Fully fit & in form Rosicky & Eduardo would be brilliant but they are some way off yet I`m afraid.

I`ve been one of Diaby`s detractors recently but it`s borne of frustration more than anything else.

Everyone can see he`s talented though a combination of bad luck through injuries & playing out wide he`s not realising that massive potential.

I`d like to see him given a go in CM because he`s far more of threat there than wide out but I don`t think Wenger trusts him any more.

  154. Great post G4E.

    Muppet,
You’re quite right, a fit Eduardo and Rosicky, would really enhance the squad. Not sure about Rosicky, but Eduardo might start to play in january. Not to forget that Vela is suppose to be introduced properly in january, similiar to eduardo of last season. Keeping our midfield trio of Song, Denilson and Diaby fit would be the key. And Nasri has shown what he can do if he’s deemed fit to play.

  155. Why don’t you just go somewhere else and leave us in our current deluded mindset?

Then you might find the kind of feting you seem to crave for.

I have nothing to say to you because you are SO RIGHT!

Now leave the rest of us alone; the real truth is…we are not remotely interested in your opinions!

  156. How long before Bischoff can have a go in the first team?

  157. The media hound teams, it isn’t just us. I was listening to Talk Shite on the way in, and there was some vacuous nonsense about Chelsea on a downhill slope, “They just don’t finish off teams like they used to”. I was negotiating my car around some slippery bends and nearly ended up in a ditch in rage. There are laws now for racism, laws for discrimination, political correctness, but not it seems for stupidity. Chelsea’s goal difference is 29. Er… what does that mean? That they haven’t been finishing teams off as per usual… err.. I think they are doing quite nicely thank you.

Ignore the media. This is a message for the doomers. You wake up after being stood up, or finding yourself more overdrawn than usual, read the newspaper, and see that Arsenal are in freefall. Ignore it; it is crap; media column inches to fill, so that advertisers will pay them money. The cliches are so cringeworthy that they make you want to strangle the pundits. I have never seen so many column inches devoted to talking about football where they are not actually talking about football, but some kind of tribal vindication nonsense. I watch tennis, but I don’t read what Federer says about Nadal or vice versa… it’s irrelevant. Federer was written off as a force and blew everybody away at the U.S open… some has been.

Let’s just concentrate on what we actually see and can agree on. Arsenal are not a spent force, we have bloody good players, exciting young players, are in the last 16 of the champions league, 8 points behind the leaders at Xmas (so what ?) and have some money to spend. Excuse my language, but the media can get stuffed.

  158. You are so right Muppet. The media need something to fill their column inches so they speculate and make things up to see what reaction they might get.

What they want more than anything is for Arsene to spend a lot of money on a player just so they can say ‘I told you so, the youth policy is a failure!’ (sound like anyone we know?). They don’t like anyone to be different and try to stand out from the crowd. It makes them suspicious. They will be much happier if Arsene is forced to spend big, so they are rubbing their hands with glee that Cesc is injured.

It sickens me to read so called Arsenal supporters with access to a keyboard seeing the injury to a young world class player as a blessing in disguise because it will force Arsene’s hand. I’d rather have Cesc than anybody that could potentially be available in the transfer window.

  159. Excellent post Muppet, as Frank would say your a star.

  160. It’ll be interesting to see what Wenger does. I for one will laugh if he signs nobody. The outpouring of indignation will be hilarious.

He is in a difficult situation. As someone said earlier, we have plenty of players; they are just injured. Wenger won’t want to spend a lot of money on a player who won’t be able to get in the team when the others return from injury; and how many players could get into the current team when all our players are fit?

  161. Passenal – that’s a bit unfair. A big difference to saying a blessing in disguise to “maybe a few silver linings”.. doesn’t sound so huge, but the fact is, Cesc is out – are there ANY positives ??
Because if there aren’t, it’s all too much !
btw: This playground-style bullying is starting to get childish (sic). Supporters, part-time fans etc..everyone has their own level. Personally i can’t go to games for geographical/financial reasons – so, yeah, accept i’m kinda down the pecking order.. but can we UNITE a little bit, guys ?
Meanwhile YW stands back and enjoys the fun…

  162. Who came out with the “maybe a few silver linings?”

  163. Oh. Was it you, ponyboy?

    Never mind.

Well, our other players get a chance. Not a silver lining, but a positive, I suppose.

  164. I don`t believe AW can just go out & buy a player in a matter of weeks. If he buys someone in January he will have had them in mind for a while.

I can`t think of any silver linings from todays news quite frankly.

Muppet – good post. We`ve had our turn of bad press, now Chelsea are getting some (& Liverpool) & they`re top of the league !

  165. Ziya-po ya-ya, pa-pa-ya-pa!
    Ti-da-lee, na po-po pu-du-loo!
    Ste-na-peh na-na po po-ro po!
    Arsenal unite:
‘Cause we’re moving right out of Highbury,
And we’re grooving to our New land, yea-ea.

How good and how pleasant it would be before God and man, yea-eah! –
To see the unification of all Goonerans, yeah! –
As it’s been said a’ready, let it be done, yeah!
    We are the children of the Wenger-man;
We are the children of the Wenger-man.

  166. Muppet & Passenal, spot on the media are hounding Arsenal & AW because they haven’t seen anything like what we are trying before in the ‘Roman’-era. They would love to see AW spend & spend big. Our luck with the injuries suck, how many teams can cope with loosing players like Walcott, Eduardo, Rosicky (& ofcourse Cesc). If our squad was so weak, why did the manager of the table topping team didn’t have a go at us when a man up? All these pundits who sit in their arm chairs & pass judgments on our project when was the last time any of them successfully managed a top team? Do they know better than Rafa? Do they know better than Fergi who came by to watch our carling cup team? The people who actually who manage teams, run the show don’t seem to write us off, not even Martin O’Neil except j***s like Jose. Would any of the pundit bet his career that we wouldn’t finish about 4th this session, I bet they would say ‘football is a funny game crazier things have happened’ like in all other sports it like maths that the top-seed wins always!

  167. ponyboy – it’s not unfair, it’s a fact I have read comments along those lines around the internet. Losing Cesc is a blow, so it’s hard for me to see it as potentially beneficial in terms of the transfer window.

As for the rest, it’s not about going to games, you either support the team or you don’t. Supporters can criticize and point out things they are not happy with but anyone as abusive and hate-filled as at least one poster on here today, will never convince me that they support this team. Fans of other teams do go onto blog sites on a wind up – I’ve seen it before.

  168. Poliziano,

I don’t know about Bischoff. There seem to have been mixed reports about his reserve games. Wasn’t he injured for a short time after his return ?

It will be hilarious if nobody is signed. It will be great to see the posts on Le Grove.

  169. Passenal – fair enough..seen it too..but for such a sustained length of time ? That’s warped! Thanks for keeping this debate sensible !

Poliziano.. what can i say ? You just make me laugh, in a good way.. am becoming a bit of a fan of yours.. (??)

  170. Well, a part-time supporter, rather..

  171. Thank you, ponyboy. I’m rather fond of you, too.

  172. And I’m fond of you Muppent…U’r so cute with your little drums and all.

  173. I meant Muppet…hehehe…blushing

  174. Ha Ha Ha…..

  175. ponyboy – the poster in question only posts from time to time, but the content never varies – sustained abuse and name calling of our players. I have also seen more sustained trolling elsewhere. The poster even continued after being outed and admitting it!

  176. G4E

You make valid points and I don’tdisagree with you, or indeed Wenger’s philosophy. But you won’t convince me that we haven’t gone backwards. I’m happy to be patient, but as I asked Frank the other day, how long is this transition lasting? We are not better than last year or the year before that. Prove me wrong, objctively or subjectively.

  177. Passenal,
If you are talking about Arse 21 I don’t see him as any more demoralising than Ice Cream or Howard.

    Sad, sad, sad.

  178. People are looking to Bishoff. There’s your answer

  179. Jamie, do you think life is inexorably onwards upwards – regardless?
