Under the circumstances, a point is a decent return. Beforehand, it was billed as a “must win” but the dismissal of Adebayor and Cesc’s injury may have far more telling consequences on the season rather than two dropped points.
A nervy start from Arsenal, the verve and fizz on the home match against Manchester United was missing but they grew as the game went on, taking more control. Liverpool for the most part were content to keep it tight. No complaints can be made about that for it is a tactical policy that has served them well away from home this season.
This culminated in van Persie popping up with a crucial goal. Created by a superbly picked Samir Nasri pass, his control, swivel and right footed drive highlighted all that is good about the Dutchman’s game. Criticism of Carragher and Agger diminishes van Persie’s effort. It was as good a goal as will be scored by Arsenal all season.
And it seemed that the interval would come with that lead in tact. Liverpool did not throw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser yet they found one. A route one goal if ever one will be scored this season. And a preventable one at that. Djourou is guilty of ball watching, not seemingly entirely sure where Keane was whilst Gallas was culpable for not being close enough to his defensive partner, evidenced by the fact that he nearly caught Keane as the Liverpool striker lashed the ball home. Could Almunia have reacted and charged out? I doubt it for he would probably have been beaten to the ball and lobbed, before being hung, drawn, quartered and tarred and feathered for good measure.
The goal shook the confidence of the home side and for the spell immediately either side of the interval, they were in the ascendency and had the chance to take the lead but despite controlling possession were surprisingly lacklustre in their application.
The impact of the equaliser was to mute the crowd for a while but once the second yellow for Adebayor arrived, the noise and intensity was as impressive as The Emirates has ever generated. And what of the two yellows? There can be little complaint about the first. Adebayor went over the top of the ball and caught the man. If the roles had been reversed, we would have been up in arms at the tackle.
My initial reaction was that the second was for dangerous play, a similar over the top tackle but seemingly harshly arrived at. To find out that it was for the theatrics of the Liverpool defender simply intensifies the dismay that the English FA’s highest ranked official can get decisions seemingly so wrong. The sense of injustice is heightened when Keane, Gerrard and Carragher all get away with varying degrees of foul play lightly by comparison.
The decision galvanised the team. Song had been quietly doing his job but stepped up into a higher gear as did Denilson. van Persie forraged on his own effectively. Had Cesc been on the pitch I do not doubt for one minute that an Arsenal win would have occurred. Instead, a supreme irony, one of the players earmarked for partnering him challenged (fairly) and Cesc came off worst.
Injuries to El Capitán come at bad times in the best of circumstances. This year though with visits to Hull and Villa do not bode well. His natural replacement would, for me, be Denilson but it leaves a hole on the right. Maybe Eboue will step up to the plate and put his torrid time behind him. More likely though is that Diaby will be brought into the centre with Bendtner partnering van Persie on Friday. The initial reports suggest anywhere up to a month’s absence. Scans will no doubt reveal the true extent of the damage today or tomorrow.
Wenger will still have concerns about the defenceA point means a certain madam’s vocal chords are still tingling but a win on Friday would change the complexion of the Christmas break.
’til Tomorrow.

Howard Webb had a shocking game.
How did Lucas get away with 3 dangerous fouls within the first 20 minutes without a single card still baffle me.
How were Riera able to kick Nasri without a single free kick given ?
How Keane stay on the pitch for an over the top tackle? I thought that from behind, through the player tackle were red card offense.
What most papers glossed over is the fact that the first goal came from a foul on one of our player. When jumping to a throw in, Van Persie was pushed in the back and misheaded the ball. Liverpool then just kicked the ball away and Keane scored.

I thought Adebayor’s second tackle was bloody clumsy and asking for trouble, even if Abeloa did make a meal of it. As with the first one, if a Liverpool player had made a tackle like that, we’d have been screaming for blood. But I guess I’m going to be in the minority.
More worrying than Ade’s absence for 1 game is Cesc’s absence for possibly many more. Cue Eboué on the right to everyone’s delight? Or Diaby in the middle? Or Ramsey given a run? Not a very Merry Christmas, apart from the spirit the ten men showed, which augurs well, if they can reproduce it.

Webb is a joke.
Does the Webb ruling mean that step-vers are a bookable offence. I mean the foot goes over the ball doesn’t it?
2 step-overs=red card?

Good report, YW.
An unsatisfying game, with a magic goal, that should have settled such an encounter.
I would echo what you said about the goal conceded. Almunia had no chance of reaching the ball before Keene & with both CB being more likely to get there, he was right to hold his ground. Credit to Keane, it was intelligent play & a magnificent finish.
You now approach a game, to be refereed by Mr Webb, in the same way that you dreaded Graham Poll. Why the worst get to the top is beyond me.
In the context of the game & from what went on before & after Ade’s 1st booking was extremely harsh. The second was a forward forcing himself ahead of the defender to shield the ball. The type of thing that will be given, as a foul, for us never & against us 20 x out of 100. Never a booking.
I know technically taken individually Mr Webb can claim to be right but by that token Lucas should have been off the field before half time, with Carragher. Surely there must be some serious consideration before giving a 2nd yellow.
Mr Webb, like that other prat Jeff Winter before him, looks to me to be uneven in his decision making & it has cost us dear on too many occasions now.
Week after week, I look at other games & see bad tackles unpunished & think our player would have been booked for that. Am I being neurotic about this, the stats show that we have considerably more bookings per foul conceded than anyone else ?
Liverpool were functional & unimpressive but they worked Almunia more than we did Reina. It was a fair result, all things considered, & not a disaster.
Again, I think the period, when we were down to 10 men, showed what AW means about “playing with the handbrake on”. Nasri, Song & Denilson, in particular, came alive in that spell.
If we can get that out of the whole team for 90 minutes then the season can still come alive.

yeh it was funny yday when they were like “you cant give stevie that sort of room” – about 5 times!

the only fear i had was of him getting a penalty srsly
By: davi on December 22, 2008

How do you book a striker for trying to shield the ball. It wasn’t a tackle for f+ckssakes. In both cases he was shielding the ball. In the second he was like a yard ahead of Arbeloa.
That Webb is the best ref in the English game just says all you need to know about the state of the game here.
By: Ole Gunner on December 22, 2008

Flint,
Nice post, I totally agree with your analysis. I am disappointed though that you think we will ever get a fair deal from refs. You have been a supporter even longer than me and can you honestly say we have ever had a fair deal?
I gave up years ago (and I do mean years!) thinking that we will ever get justice. I don’t even get as angry now as I have come to expect it.
It never ceases to amaze me though how refs find new ways to punish us unfairly and yesterday was a new low in refereeing standards.
Agree about Almunia – the goal wasn’t his fault. Djourou was out of position and Gallas to far from Johann to make the tackle. Gallas would have made that tackle 3 years ago. He’s a player in decline and I wouldn’t mind if he was sold and his 80k a week wages given to someone more deserving.

Ole,
“That Webb is the best ref in the English game just says all you need to know about the state of the game here.”
Couldn’t agree more.
Why don’t we abolish refs and referee games by the toss of a coin. Goal? heads or tails, foul heads or tails. I reckon this would result in more consistency.

To be honest i think a draw was the right result. While we have 11 men on the pitch Liverpool were the better team.We just werent creating chances. The sending off seemed to affect liverpool more than us.
I am really worried about the midfield at Villa without the craft of Cesc who will create the chances. And the midfield looks very slow

Obviously I don’t have it writing and would have to trawl the internet to prove it, but that kind of lineup wasn’t a rare sight between 1992 and 1996. Surely in the premiership as well. Was it so traumatic that you’ve forgotten?
Maybe replace Parlour with Eddie McG or Selley with Keown if you want to strengthen it a little (!). Not capable of goals? Why not add a dash of John Jensen to the mix.

Web is simply corruptly ambitious!
Mark Clattenberg dared send Fergie off, and he has now joined the choir oblivion; someone found out his small business was not managed well enough just on the day he was to referee the community shield this year!!!
This is the same Howard Webb who did not give a yellow to Rooney for a blatant deliberate violent tackle on Walcott. Webb is a political ref who knows who to punish and who to not, and hence progress well in his career.
Fergie lectured him on how to progress in his future last season when he did not invent penalties against Arsenal in the first match; which he kindly responded to by inventing a penalty and a free kick in the return match!
The Polish Prime Minister famously said he never wished to see anyone dead, except Howard Webb, when he invented a last-minute penalty for Austria in the European championships; it is good for the career to be good to the hosts!

I’d just say that it’s likely to be the most scapegoat-filled side Wenger’s ever fielded. Given that most of the criticism aimed at Denilson and Song is pretty empty, I think it’s a team that will win for us. With Eboue and Nasri on the flanks, I think it’s a nice mix of steel, pace and creativity.

We do all know the midfield is light… but when u make statements that this is our weakest midfield ever … how can u say that when we have:
Walcott, Nasri, ROsicky, Cesc, Diaby, Denilson, Ramsey, Eboue, Wilshire, Song
Weakest midfield ever… ??? never knows a fan to speak so much crap in my whole life!!!… other teams are bloody beggin for players like ours. U seriously need to take a look at the other teams man. Its not all about the big names, its about the quality.

Guys, I am slightly upset that nobody has picked up on the fact that Liverpool went to pieces when the crowd really went crazy.
Our lads felt the wrath and injustice from the crowd and they responded in kind.
We need to create this atmosphere each and every week or something similar it really helps the boys and I don’t think it is a coincidence that our worst spells in the game were accompanied with the quietest the stadium was.
Another plus point is the reception Eboue got from the Gooners, that is how true fans should behave.

I’ve heard this statement of yours only like 800 times from various commenters and pundits and I’m not any closer to understanding what this means.
Anyways, I am very worried about Cesc being off, and I think it makes us weaker….not as a midfield but as a team. It’s not just the dearth of creative players in the team now, it’s that Cesc is a pivotal player who takes the necessary number of touches on the ball that allows the team to move from a defensive shape to an attacking one. It’s a crucial one.

Cesc will be missed, just hope Diaby steps up and stops giving the ball away. Nasri would be ideal playing in the middle i think, but then u lose his width which we need right now too.
We will either see Eboue slot in at RM.. with Denilson SOng in the middle and Nasri on the left. Or Wenger might feel that he needs that extra creative spark through the middle and stick either Nasri or Diaby in there. With Ade being suspended now for Villa i reckon we will see a 5 man midfield with Nasri Denilson Song Eboue and Diaby sitting in front as a second striker which has worked to good effect before.
Cesc is an important player, and is the engine of our team.. we just need to reassemble a little now and show that team ethic that has served us so well in the past and that came out on sunday.

All being a little harsh on AIC here. It is a valid point to make though I would interject that the midfield that finished yesterday’s game (Diaby, Denilson, Song, Eboue) is even weaker than the earlier one.
If we start those 4 jokers against Villa, we will not win.
What’s more, if they are supplemented by Bentdner up front than we could be in even more trouble.
This isn’t being ‘negative’, its being realistic.
The sooner these 5 players leave the team, the sooner we will get back to winning games and picking up trophies

Just generally guys, everyone, AIC,…does anyone else dislike a media culture in which everyone says the same thing, the pundits use the same words, and phrases to describe anything, and they simply never break out of their stereotypes.
It’s so predictable. Last night it was clear that every columnist writing this morning’s columns were going to write about Arsenal conceding through the middle from a long ball. Theme 2: Deluded Arsene Wenger thinking his team are still in it/ Moaner Wenger angry at a bad refereeing performance.
Isn’t there something wrong with that? I’m a keen follower of business news and I don’t see the same kind of thing in business media in which the journos there are distinguished by their insight not how many pub cliches they can cram into a badly-written article?
People like Yogi’s Warrior, Arsenal Insider and a bunch of blogs actually write better and offer more insight than the Alan Hansens, the Dan Carters etc of this world.
By: Ole Gunner on December 22, 2008

nasri should play in the middle, even if you lose width, you need some creativity in the middle or we will really struggle for goals and to create anything. song and denilson don’t work, it has been tried and i don’t think we have won with them in themiddle. they battled fantastically on sunday but created nothing. time to give wilshire a start to give some creativeness on the wings.

When will Arsenal fans and Wenger realise that blaming everyone else for your short commings will not win you any trophies!!
Howard web had a bad game? I thought over allhe had quite a good game. Sagna could have had a straight red? Then again you lot will propbably forget about that tackle but keep crying about teh fact that Lucas didn’t get a yellow sooner! Get over it!!
And please… Denealson?! If he is Flamini, Veira, Pettit’s replacement then you wont be winning anything for a long time!!
In Van Persi and Adi you ave 2 good players but both bit time charlies, its all about number one with them! By the way, Robbie Keans goal was far supriorin technic and skill to that of Van Persi. They say shooting when teh ball comes over you is teh hardest of all, hmmm that came 60 yards and teh onoly touch keane had was to smack in teh back of teh net, please dont blame Almunia as no one would have stopped that.
At teh end of the day apart from Van Persi goal you did nothing at you were at home! Shiiiiiiit!
Oh yeah, LFC will drop so many more points at home in the second half of teh season, this is possibly true but again Wenger, did you forget that as much as we have dropped 8 points, how many have you boys dropped at home? Losing Ade and Cesc, a draw is quite a good result for me.
Arsene, could you please play Diaby just behind RVP for the next game? I don’t think he will ever contribute much playing on wing or as DM. He is one of few who doesn’t mind shooting at first opportunity and has skill enough to hold on the ball in the box.
This formation could win us games:
Almunia (Try Fabiansky, please).
Sagna – Gallas- Djourou – Clichy.
Denilson- Song.
Eboue – Diaby(Nasri) – Nasri(Wilshere).
RVP.

unfortunately wenger won’t play nasri in the middle or try wilshire or vela, he has very little if any imagination in his team selections, diaby will be on the left nasr in the middle and song and denilson in the middle. and that sadly will be our midfield for the next month or so until fab gets back. he obviously has NO interest in playing diaby in the middle, for all those calling for it, you are wasting you breath, aint gonna happen.

Ole,
I can make my own mind up; I don’t paraphrase the media. I find this rather insulting.
Collectively I think a midfield of Diaby, Denilson, Nasri and Song is average. There is a lack of natural width and pace. Diaby hasn’t played 2 decent games in a row in his Arsenal career but has been injured or out of position. Denilson has done quite well this season Nasri needs time and Song is improving also but still this amounts to an average midfield. There is a lack of solidity, tackling and defensive awareness. Diaby gives the ball away too easily and while Denilson is a decent passer he is not incisive like Cesc or Hleb. One of the players will have to be shoehorned into a wide role that they are not suited to. Song is often off the pace and struggles to read the game at times. Its not surprising that the midifeld has struggled to find any rhythm or fluency as these players have not played much and even less together.
If you comapre them to Tom, Cesc, Hleb and Flam the difference is huge.

Have some faith, a better chance with a free scoring striker in the form of Keano and crippled Torres up front… get real man, u should know what sort of squad a club needs to win the league. Relying on Gerrard and Torres they aint got no chance in hell… i guarantee you they will be battling with Villa for Champs League spot come May.

I find it best in polite society just to ignore a rude guest especially if he is uninvited.
In the spirit of Christmas though I will offer these considered words to our intellectually challenged scouser.
Your team is second rate. You have spent far too much money on second rate players. You envy our stadium but can’t afford a new one. Steven Gerrard is a cheat. You are in debt upto your eyebrows. Your manager makes excuses beyond belief for failing to build a balanced team. You will never win the Championship under Benitez.
And you personally sir, are a disgrace to decent Liverpool supporters.
Oh, and we do know our own teams shortcomings thank you and will debate them in our way on our websites.

I am positively sickened by the refereeing and general media coverage we face. I loathe to agree with anything Howard says, but would Rooney have been booked for either the challenges Ade was sent off for. I doubt he would even have heard a whistle.
The levels of prejudice we now regularly encounter, have crossed into the absurd. What double standards we face! When someone goes over the top versus us, pundits and referees alike ask of the malicious intent! When our striker using his arse more than his feet goes into challenge, he is found guilty for showing his studs! Malicious intent? Oh no, we only ask that if it is a challenge on a weak foreign Arsenal player!
It is disgusting cycle of prejudice and while these referees and pundits want to have a beer after the game with the English lads like good old honest Terry, Gerrard and Lampard! They desperately want to show these foreigners as the evil dirty players they are!
Would Terry and Rooney, not have accrued 20 odd red cards by now, if they were judged by such refereeing standards?
Terry talks to the referee, shrugs his shoulders, reminds him of some earlier misdemeanour by the opposition and generally assists the ref on working out the good from the bad. The honest from the filthy! Gallas walks toward the ref and they cry what is he doing poking his nose in! Bloody foreigner!
Shearer made a living on challenges like Ade’s two yesterday, but he of course is from the North-East of England. He is a good lad. Honest, tough as well. Ade is from Africa, he must be dirty and devious too, just like the rest of Arsenal’s foreigners. Arsene pretends he wants to play football, but really they are a sinister bunch of evil foreigners!
Not fair honest English lads, but snide dirty foreigners! Not tough either, we are told, as they applaud sides attempting to intimidate us with care-free tackling! Tackle back and it’s I told you they are no angels, those foreigners!
When do the rest have their big games effected by such decisions! They don’t!

Okay,
according to some “experts”, we won’t win anything with song-denilson; what I saw yesterday was song-denilson, these two “donkeys” shut up gerrard-alonso, the latter supposedly a saviour for gunners’ faltering title hope.
Below are the stats for the season so far and yesterday (taken from euro sports fantasy football and editted by me to show attacking and defending stats more clearly). You may argue that stats are all lies. The crap that the referee assistant is yesterday probably encouraged Liverpool’s route 1 game from which they scored their equaliser. We were not 11 against 11, but 11 against 13 until the officials contrived to make it 10 against 13 with some scandalous flashing of yellow cards.

the fact that people can’t see that when it is so blindingly obvious is very strange. however we need to be supportive and optimistic as this is what we have now and have to just get on with it.
it is however very depressing, just lower your expectations accordingly and you won’t get upset anymore. it has worked a treat for me. i would have taken a draw before the game yesterday and was ecstatic by the end as we had battled so well and earned the draw.

Alot of us gooners feel exactly the same mate! We are called moaners for it, but its very true how the English players get special treatment compared to the foreigners. The refs dont feel half the pressure in sending a foreign player off than to when an Englishman commits a similar foul… They just get a pat on the back, and dont do it again chap attitude.. then they will have a little laugh about it later when they commit the same offense.
Rooney is the perfect example… he runs around like a mad man on the pitch for 90 mins knocking people over, elbowing people and going in studs up on many many occasions..!!… the English punditry might say the odd he needs to relax etc… but if that was Adebayor he would have been thrown out the country by now.
Its injustice to thousands of supporters sitting at home or in the stands who have to watch racism in act every week… Kick Racism out of football my ass. The scouse got the draw because the English ref decided to give the foreigners a hard time on sunday…

I like LC’s line-up for Villa. A 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 if you like with Diaby behind RVP. The truth is, Villa dominated us last time by overrunning our midfield. They pressured the ball and cut off service forward, and then broke with speed on the counter-attack. An extra midfielder seems necessary and I rate Diaby above Bendtner, despite the fact that he fairly stunk yesterday. I HOPE that was just rust. Diaby is frustratingly inconsistent, which gives some hope he will pop up with a decent game. Anyhow, I think we can beat Villa and of course we have to.

chris,
he had a good game yesterday, but he diaby denilson, eboue, and bendtner are not “amazing” in way shape or form.
that isn’t anti wenger, but these are players who individually can do a job but as the core of the team are simply not good enough, as is being shown by the fact we are fighting for 4th place with villa and 5th place with Hull and Everton.
winning the league isn’t even a possibility i am sorry to say.
By: dan on December 22, 2008
at 3:54 pm
chris,
The best/worst example of this was when Shearer kicked Neil Lennon in the face and then threatened the FA that he would boycott the World Cup if he was banned.
Could you imagine if Vieira had done this. They would have banned him for life. They would have brought back the death penalty just for Paddy.
Its clear that foreigners get a raw deal from the media and the refs. Do you think Manu would have gotten away with their assaults on Jose Reyes if it were an English player like Beckham or even Lennon.
What Howard says is true. If we had more English players we might get a better deal from the refs. Its not reason in itself to have English players though and we had English players in the past and the refs still picked on our foreign players – Petit, Vieira spring to mind.
By: Alex Ice Cream on December 22, 2008

i think of all the players diaby has become the most redundant of them all, wenger has publicaly said he can’t play in the centre as he doesn’t have the discipline, he can not play on the left anyone can see that, and his best position is behind the forwards, which is a system we rarely use.
thay should get rid of him and bring in a proper wide player to replace the permanently injured rosicky and mostly injured nasri and walcott. and utterly crap eboue.
By: dan on December 22, 2008
at 4:01 pm
the complaints against refs is a waste of time and just masks the real problems we face, i think the whole english argument is garbage, we get some decisions and don’t get others. maybe we overall get less in our way but doesn’t change the big picture. ade shouldn’t have been sent but his 2nd tackle was reckless considering he was on a booking. it had littel impact on the game as we were better after he was sent off and certainly didn’t look like winning after half time prior to him being sent off.

Following up on Flint’s true comments about the referees and why the worst reach the top.
I really think it’s an English thing, Howard Webb is so hyped up as the best referee when I think he is the worst referee. Just exactly as English players are so hyped up when they are really average at best, compared to players from around the globe.
We all remember the so comic English Referee who booked a player 3 times in a major tournament.
The problem is all the hype about anything English football, they raise and praise their brand so much and then it all crumbles on their heads when they meet the real world.
It’s a pity for a country that invented Football.

I don’t like the blame going around against Djourou for Pool’s equaliser. Yes he was at fault but what was Gallas doing?
Djourou is a young player learning his trade yet surrounded by senior players and none counseled him? Gallas was supposed to control his movement so the blame should go to Gallas.
Arsenal’s defence always play high up the field but that approach is good when the centre backs position themselves well and back it up with pace. We were beaten same way by Villa and Boro last season. Are they learning?
Toure could’ve dealt with that problem if he had played.
Still, there are so many average players at Arsenal and overall is affecting the teams performances. Almunia, Diaby, Song, Denilson and Eboue should be on the bench rather than playing, regularly.

For what its worth Diaby, Song Denilson and Eboue have had a mixture of both poor and good games. None have been convincing enough to be first team regulars. Well not for a team that want to win the Prem.
It could change but I am just talking as of now.

I wonder whether how much input the crowd had in lifting the side after Adebayors red card? It was the loudest i’ve known the Emirates, it was almost as if the whole crowd & the whole Arsenal team sensed the injustice & run riot. If only this was the case week in week out…
Denilson & Song were superb on Saturday… For me, Denilson has been our best player this yr, i think with Cesc out & Denilson in his preffered position people will see what a great player he actually is.
It’s also an opportunity for Ebouie to make ammends. We’re lacking pace down that side and he can bring it into the side…

I have argued against any ‘policing’ on this site as you know.
I also have genuine doubts about the current ability of this Arsenal side to deliver trophies this season. Ask Frank who has pilloried my scepticism too many times!
However, I think Denilson and Almunia, to name 2 from those named by Howard, have had decent seasons so far. They may not be the players that we want them to be, ie. Seaman and Viera, but they wear the shirt and give their best.
For that I support them. They are ours.

By: Consolsbob on December 22, 2008

Howard
Not too sure that I would agree that Toure would have dealt with the situation any better than Gallas. There is a lack of confidence amongst the whole defence – perhaps Sagna excepted – that is affecting them. The only way for it to improve is a series of clean sheets. The problem is that you cannot see that happening right now.

Can someone please explain to me how John Terry’s tackle on Sagna a couple of weeks ago warrented the same punishment as either of Ade’s bookings yesterday. Certain England players are allowed to do what ever they please. Steven Gerrard should join the ballet the number of times he does his dieing swan act.
By: Marc on December 22, 2008

Marc
The fundamental problem is the inconsistencies of referees. They rarely apply the same punishment to similar offences. I’ve just seen Sky’s post-match analysis and Arca’s tackle on Saturday was a straight red and most referees would have given it as such. Arca though got a yellow. It is this type of inconsistency that has to be eradicated.
The disappointing thing about Adebayor’s sending off – aside from the decision made by Webb – is that the player made a challenge that was open to such interpretation. He had been booked for a similar type of incident earlier so where was the logic in trying the patience of the referee with the second. Whilst being caught up in the game gives him some excuse, it is something he was surely aware of?

I’d argue that airing your doubts all the time means you don’t really support the team.
I’ve had bosses that scrutinised every decision I made and waited for confirmation of my ineptitude every time I tried something new. That sucked. Imagine having thousands doing just that and then telling the world exactly what they think about you in their free time.
Nobody could hope to flourish in that kind of environment. Fans are meant to be partisan. And it’s the best thing we can do. The second half yesterday was very encouraging in that respect. It’s not very sportsmanlike, but I really enjoyed hearing Liverpool get booed.
And this isn’t politics either. The use of ‘thought-police’ in this context is irrelevant and mildly offensive.

I agree with you. With 10 men we showed more fight than we have done in many games this season. Villa away is a huge game and we will know a lot more about where we are after this game.
The thought-police stuff is aimed at anyone who tries to stop people expressing a view whether positive negative or neutral.

Donkey midfield, that’s what we have. They run like tortoise, Song and Denilson unArsenal, no pace in them.
Compare times with Viera, Palour, Petit, Gilberto, Edu, Hleb, Flamini and yet Arsene Wenger keep faith. They can’t deliver the killer pass, even passing 9 yards away is a problem for them.
The average midfield is the cause of our problems all season. They’re just average.

I’d argue that airing your doubts all the time means you don’t really support the team.
I am not so sure that is true although I totally agree that players cannot flourish if they are concerned that they will be criticised for every wrong decision made.
Some people have doubts yet that should not mean that their support is questionable. Not everyone buys into Wenger’s philosophy, it is a matter of opinion.
The use of ‘thought-police’ in this context is irrelevant
Now that is true.

Don’t agree with that Yogi!!
If the lad feels he is doing nothing wrong by planting a leg over the other side of the ball and thrusting his big arse in their way,
why would he not do it again???
The lad has been doing that exact move since he came to these shores.
What’s truly nice to see, is Howard Webb decide he no longer likes that or has now spotted it 2 years after he turned up here and apply that rule for the first time in a massive sky sunday big 4 game.
Surprise, Surprise.

“Fans are meant to be partisan. And it’s the best thing we can do. The second half yesterday was very encouraging in that respect.”
This is what those who constantly criticize just don’t get. You are doing the opposition’s job for them if you spend all your time undermining the confidence of the players you purport to support.
Constructive criticism is fine and there are those who do so and I have no problem with it. I do have a problem though with the constant destructive criticism, which is probably what drives me to being even more positive and supportive in order to counter that negativity. I really believe that negativity only breeds negativity whereas a bit of partisan unconditional support goes a long way as we saw yesterday.

It’s all about Ego Passenal, some have to criticize and keep going on about it, so they can say “I told you so” at the end. I wonder what kind of reward they get doing that?
I for one think we will not win the title this year, but I still doubt myself and hope that I’m wrong everyday. I keep saying nothing is impossible until it’s mathematically impossible.
Yes, I know we have some weaknesses but it’s not due to Eboue or Denilson…it’s due to confidence which is a very fragile thing.
I criticize players but I don’t go on about it everyday…it’s not going to change anything, and in fact it makes things worse.

Clutching at red and white straws.
A funny thing happened to the team yesterday when Cesc went off; it was if the remaining midfield players went into a large phone box, span around really fast and came out wearing red and white superman capes; enabling them playing better than they have ever played before.
I have been walking around all day asking myself why, because, the most obvious answer that the dismissal of Adebayor galvanised the team into action just didn’t seem adequate – and then it hit me – the last time we witnessed such a surge of improvement from a group of players was after the departure of Thierry Henry. No longer did everything have to go through the great man; players could express themselves with out fear of the belittling effect of those Gallic eyebrows being raised to heaven. And so it was yesterday, the normally mild mannered, much maligned midfielders were released from the constraints of having to go through El Capitano and the change was tangible. Now read the title.
By: London on December 22, 2008

I disagree with that, London. I don’t think Henry had a belittling effect on the other players. We don’t know what would have happened last season if Henry had still been at Arsenal. Maybe his departure had an effect similar to removing the stabilisers from a child’s bicycle. I don’t know. Fabregas has a completely different personality from Henry. He is as modest as any modern footballer. He also has a lower stature in the game than Henry had, although that might well change in the future.
The improvement yesterday came after the red card, not after the substitution of Fabregas. Perhaps, though, the difficulties the team faced yesterday forced each player to take on his own share of the burden. They are good enough to carry that burden, but they sometimes seem to doubt themselves.

D`jourou got done by Keane`s speed of thought as much as anything & Gallas was too far away to cover.
Hopefully Johan will learn from this – you can`t switch off for a second , even against Liverpool.
I thought the side battled manfully with ten men. Nice performance from Song & Denilson did well too (some quality niggly fouls as well – the boy is learning) but Diaby was his usual enigmatic self.
All in all, more plusses than of late but we`ll have to batton down the hatches at Villa.

“They are good enough to carry that burden, but they sometimes seem to doubt themselves.”
This is the crux of everything Poliziano – the criticism of the team is so widespread even amongst the fanbase that they are really struggling to remember just how good they can be. I still cannot forget that CL final with Diaby, Cesc and Denilson in the midfield – they were outstanding for most of the game. If they could re-discover that spirit and belief they would be unstoppable.

Does anyone remember Adebayour’s dismissal during the Carling Cup final. He was accused completely falsely of punching a Chelsea player.
The referee was Howard Webb, the assistant was Darren Cann.
Just a coincidence or some sort of agenda ?

I don’t think it’s just a coincidence Steve. They probably haven’t forgiven the fact that they were shown up for what they are. They not only lied, but they compounded the lie by refusing to back down when the clear video evidence was put in front of them. They probably haven’t forgiven Arsene for his comments at the time even though he was heavily and unjustly fined, they are still looking for their pound of flesh.

Quick thought: Does anyone remember any instance in which a striker was sent off for two offences similar to the ones Ade was penalised for? I was chatting with a mate and neither could remember one instance in which a striker was sent off or booked for shielding the ball from the defender.
Any dice?

Another random thought, but I thought the transfer window opens Jan 1st? How comes Diarra has not only been sold, but also passed a medical before that date? Or don’t the rules apply to Real Madrid?

Well, well! I’d forgotten Chelsea were playing. It seems that is the first time Chelsea have dropped points away from home this season. It’s a tough league at the moment.
Everton are one of several second rank teams that I believe are better than Villa.
Liverpool, united, and Chelsea will all drop plenty more points before the season is out. It’s high time Arsenal show what they are made of.

No idea about the Diarra deal. I presume he is a Portsmouth player until January. Isn’t he?
By: Poliziano on December 22, 2008

Technically yes, but I’m just surprised about how open all this dealing is before the window has officially opened. I don’t recall this type of pre-transfer window signing before.

Very strange to see `Lass` posing in his Real kit in December, well before he can officially join them.

Diarra must be something of a trouble-maker. Clubs usually feign coyness in their transfer dealings, but they seem willing to dispose of Diarra at any cost.

Just reading more on the Chelski game apparently Graham Poll on the Setanta commentary admitted that sending off the England captain is frowned upon by the powers that be! Colour me surprised! (that he would admit what we all know!).
By: Passenal on December 22, 2008

He should’ve been sent off in our game, so obviously it takes 2 to 3 games for an English player to get sent off?
Does that prove “Howard Palmer” is correct about referees? Even though it’s shameful and disgraceful.

intereseting mini-debate above on how to account for the fantastic performance put in by Song and Denilson in the 2nd half. Was it Cesc going off or Ade being sent off that made them raise their level? I tend to think the later. But more importantly, let’s hope it was a ‘learning moment’, something they can reference in the future. If so, they will have made a big step up in their development. But they were also playing smart. Denilson really looked like Cesc in his orchestration of attacks and Song, of course, was everywhere.

I don’t f**ing care what the press and media say…or what the ar**hole blogs and their a**hole commenters say…f*** the pundits…f** the commenters..this side will prevail..and the youngsters just breaking through will be world beaters…

I heard Howard Webb is the best ref England has! What a joke! That truly sums up the game in England! He was biased in many decisions in the game. If he is still the best ref come end of season, god save England cos English football cannot!

I suppose were going to get a chance to find out how good, Song, Diaby and Denilson really are now without Cesc’s presence to make teams sit back. I really hope I’m not proved right, I really do, but I fear we could crumble like franks profit margin in the current climate.

Luke,
I’ve supported Arsenal for a very long time, and spent a hell of alot of maney on them, so I think i’ll say what I wish regarding my thoughts on the team. I believe Denilson, Song, Diaby, Eboue and Djourou to be wank and not Arsenal standard, but thats only my opinion.

You don’t have to justify yourself to people here. I have also been a Gooner for years and years but because we are worried about the current state of the team we are branded traitors.
Why is it so difficult to understand: our support is there but we have doubts about the team. The 2 are not mutually exclusive.

Arse21,
I have always defended people’s right to an opinion here and that includes everyone. Hell you and I disagree with most people but you don’t see me dictating what people say.
Unlike you, I don’t think that the players you mention are wank but they are not good enough to be starters for Arsenal on a regular basis (Eboue) but I wouldn’t rule out the others yet as they are al still young. They are not ready to mount a Prem challenge yet though.

I was watching Diaby play in highlights of a few matches from last season and before he was injured on the box last night. He was a different player from the one we see now
He did look the business. Is it just confidence he is lacking or is he one of those that promise much but do not mature into top players.
I don’t know.
