As part of the build-up to Sunday’s match, here is a Q&A with Redfloyd from Liverpool blog, Have You Ever Been To Liverpool.
Liverpool’s start to the season has been good so far. What has Benitez changed from last term?
The table doesn’t lie but in truth it’s been a mixed bag.
At the beginning of the season we lacked width but we now have a genuine wide player in Albert Riera on one side with Kuyt of the other. The jury’s still out on Riera but we can now stretch defences and give Torres and Gerrard the space they need. Sadly we’ve still to find a solution to our full back problems. Rafa’s also eased back on the rotating. At the start of last season he rested too many key players for league games with an eye on Europe. Now he realises than the league is the main target this year. We’ve also, in two games, taken more points from the top four teams than we did throughout the whole of last season.
That said I don’t think we’d be top had the rest of the big four not been so inconsistent. Like them we’ve had more than our fair share of wobbly moments but have perfected the useful trick of being able to come back from behind to snatch improbably victories – a good sign for when we really get going!!
In truth we should more than one point in front but sadly the old habit of dropping points at home to teams we should be expected to beat has recently remerged. Despite this team spirit seems to be high. When we’ve had our aberrations and fallen behind we’ve refused to lie down and have eventually, through sheer force of will, prevailed when perhaps last season we would have chucked it in. This is the most gratifying thing of all.
Is Benitez’s lessening his reliance upon rotation a genuine change of policy or an admission that the depth in the squad is not there?
Clearly no manager will 100% be happy with his squad and Rafa is no exception. He will always looking to strengthen. We are a long way from doing what you did in the Carling Cup with your kids (or reserves!) and although he’s signed, and still got, a few duds along the way we have a lot more strength in depth than when Rafa first arrived.! We beat The Mancs without Torres and Gerrard and beat PSV the other day with a genuine second string side so I’m sure Rafa will be encouraged but will also recognise that more needs to be done.
Despite this my inkling is that the rotation issue is more to do with policy. I can’t second guess Rafa but, after a couple of bad results last season, one of them being the Barnsley cup exit, the rotation slowed down and this has carried on into this season. In past he has been accused of resting players for bigger games. This is fine but it should be sensible, and should never jeopardize our chances of picking up points and winning games. We have fallen foul of both these conditions in the past mainly because Rafa has underestimated opposition (and his players?) and taken a longer term view rather than, as he does now, just “thinking about the next game”.
As always, it’s a risk. If Rafa rests players, and wins, he’s a tactical genius if we slip up he’s a meddling, over rotating buffoon! Players can’t play all the time but I sometimes wonder if Rafa is guilty wrapping his players in too much cotton wool. They are young and fit enough to recover quickly and the club provides the best environment possible to enable them to do that.
The summer was a headline grabbing time for Benitez. Is Gareth Barry worth all the love being shown or is Alonso a better bet? Robbie Keane – Value for money or worth less than a Mickey Mouse watch?
No contest! Compared to Alonso, Barry was overpriced and over rated. One only has to see the way Xabi has performed this season to realise that. For all Rafa’s dogged determination to close it, I’m glad the deal didn’t go through. Although I criticised him for his belligerence and intransigence, Martin O’Neill did us a favour by not caving in to our offers. I’ve also a feeling that Rafa’s attempts to offload Alonso were not just to do with football.
Robbie Keane worries me. You can clearly see he is desperate to do well and be successful for the club he supported as a boy. He has always played with pride passion and commitment, just the sort of thing we want. However, I’m not sure Rafa’s handling of him so far has helped. Keane now needs a run in the side to build understanding and find his feet (literally given some his misses this season!). However, Rafa hooks him off far too early and far too often. I’m also not sure Rafa plays him in the right position so far he’s been a loan striker, on the wing but he is most effective ferreting around in “the hole”. Keane had a great game at PSV the other week and probably thought he was close to turning a corner but then Rafa benched him for Hull! Baffling and worrying given his £20m price tag. I just hope we show patience and don’t, as some reports suggest, do anything rash this January.
The bookies still rate Liverpool as third favourites despite being top and missing Torres for some time. Fair call on their part or are they undervaluing being the team’s performance, especially with a proven goalscorer set to return.
I think this is a fair call and it suits us not have the pressure as favourites. Although we are top we haven’t really been any more convincing than the rest of the top four. The fact we have dropped six points from our last three home games and still remain top says it all about the way the so called “big four” are performing at the moment?
Torres has been out with injury twice this season but we missed him more the second time. Although we have proved that we are not so reliant on him (and Gerrard) this season he, like Ian Rush in the past, has a knack of getting vital goals when they are really needed. The fact that we’ve “stalled” in front of goal recently while he was injured is probably no coincidence. The next two months, where there are no Champions League distractions, will be vital. Torres won’t be back until January and if we get through Christmas in tact, on top or in touch and he returns who knows what can happen! I have a gut feeling as to how things will go but at the moment you’ll get no predictions from me!
The general perception is that a Liverpool win ends Arsenal’s title challenge on Sunday. Two things: Is that right and, given Liverpool’s poor record at Arsenal in recent seasons, will Liverpool win on Sunday?
I will maintain that Arsenal can win the tile if only because Rio Ferdinand says you can’t! As we all know Rio has a history of “forgetfulness” he should remember you being something like thirteen points behind Man United one season and still winning the league. Yes, you’ve been inconsistent, and had other problems, but a lot can happen especially if you get your players back from injury, sort your defence out and the teams above you continue to drop points. A win on Sunday will give you three wins out of three against the top four so it would be silly to rule you out yet, but you need to be more consistent.
Re Sunday, I guess now is a good time to play you but then again it is a good time for you to play us! I don’t take account of past records. If they had any bearing we wouldn’t have beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. No doubt you will do your usual trick of pinging it about in a lovely, attractive way and making us look like a team of pub players! You’ll probably score and then we’ll wake up! I think there are always opportunities with your defence and we’ve proved this in the past, especially in the Champions League, so I hope Rafa instructs the side to be positive. The question is, given our current form, will we be able take these chances? I always believe we can win every game we play, blind optimism or stupidity call it both if you like, and feel more confident than I did for any of the games we played against you last season. However, I suspect a draw will be the most likely outcome and with Chelsea facing a difficult game at Everton on Monday this might not be such a bad thing for us?
Thanks to Red for the time. ’til Tomorrow.

YW, really nice piece, my favourite in a long time. Particularly because it involved a level headed fan just like you – of the team we are going to face next & are as well as our fellow contenders for the title. Nice.

There’s no sign of The Creamer at the moment, so I’ve taken the liberty of supplying his lyrics for In the Bleak Midwinter. He can sing himself hoarse at the pub on Sunday.
In the transfer window, Arsenal fans made moan,
Faces hard as iron, silent as a stone;
Alonso’d fallen, Alonso, Alonso,
In the transfer window, not so long ago.
Our Cesc, Arsenal can’t hold him, nor our funds sustain;
Other players shall flee away when he ends his reign.
In the transfer window Kompany sufficed,
Neither unobtainable, neither overpriced.
The end of him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
We’re left with Diaby, and Manu Eboue;
Enough for us, the poorest of the poor,
Alexandre Song and Adebayor.
Pires and Viera may have gathered there,
Sol Campbell and Toure won it in the air;
Now van Persie only, from six yards can miss,
While the Arsenal faithful boo and hiss.
What can I give them, rich as I am?
If I liked the players, I would be a fan;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
Yet what can I give them? Surely not my heart.

You’re on fire Poliziano! I love this line:
“If I liked the players, I would be a fan;”
Haw Haw’s version would be
If the players were English,
I’d maybe love them more,
But they’re average foreigners
so show them the door!

Thank YW & Redfloyd, it is always good to have sensible discussion between sets of fans.
We seem to have a special affinity with the ‘pool fans, who largely know their football & realise teams are built patiently.
I expect they have similar bitching & moaning from some, when things don’t go quite right.
Absolutely brilliant, Poliziano !!
On the 1st Double side, those that are moaning about players being played out of position, should consider this.
Bob Wilson- GK
Pat Rice – RB
Bob McNab – LB
Frank McLintock – CB converted from CM (RH)
Peter Simpson – CB converted from CM
Peter Storey – DM/CM converted from RB
Geordie Armstrong – L or R/M more a LW
Charlie George – CM attacking, converted from CF
George Graham – CM /LM converted CF
Ray Kennedy – CF (later an even better LM with L’pool)
John Radford – CF, often played RW in previous seasons.
So there we have 8 out of the main 11, who were playing positions that they had not begun their 1st team careers in.
It should also be noted the Geordie, although he started at LW was comfortable on either flank, & although he switched wings a lot during games, was mainly at RW, that season. Geordie was a huge player/s for us because his energy amounted to almost having an extra man on the pitch.
Sorry people, I hope you can humour an old chap.
I see so many familiarities with the way that side was developed & how the current side is coming along.
I still feel we should have persuaded Gilberto to do a McLintock & play CB. He would have been brilliant there for a season or 2.

Poliziano,
I am still here, don’t worry about that. I even like your rhymes.
Still with the old thought-poliziano lyrics in part though which is a shame.
Its also a shame as I wasn’t around yesterday to respond to some of your comments and those of others which try to stop people expressing opinions on here. Unlike some people who have been hounded out of writing on here I won’t stop and I am not sorry to disappoint you.
Having said that, I am sticking with my predictions of beating the big teams this season and going for an Arsenal win tomorrow. We surely don ‘t need any more motivation after the CL and I like Wenger’s dive comments. Hopefully they will motivate our players even more.
Draw v Roma was great but now its time to concentrate on the Prem and the FA Cup(!). If we win on Sun we are still there, amazingly. Lose and its a struggle so Sunday is just massive.
Chelsea are struggling at home but have Essien and Carvalho to return at some point – arguably their 2 best players. Manu being away gives teams the opportunity to open up a gap on them. If this doesn’t happen though ManU will be well rested and will really fancy it. In 1999 when they played in this silly tournament Leeds and Arsenal kept dropping points and ManU romped to the title.
Lpool will be stronger once Torres gets fit.
Somewhere I read that it will be about whose finishing is better in a tight game and I think this is spot-on.

Flint,
Nice post re the 71 team there.
There is no problem with players playing in different postions/out of position but only if it works. Wenger converted Petit from leftback to central mid and most famously Henry from winger (back) to striker with huge success. I felt that Reyes playing as a striker affected his game and AW stopped playing him there after a while. Pires behind Henry occasionally in Europe didn’t work either.
It is clear than neither Diaby or Denilson are wingers, nor is Eboue however. Its also clear that a lack of alternatives is why they are playing there but there is an argument to say that we should have more options here.
Gilberto would not have had enough pace to play centreback in my opinion but would have been good otherwise.
By: Alex Ice Cream on December 20, 2008

Flint,
You are so right with regards to Gilberto. He always looked supremely confident, when he filled in at the back.
Very dominant in the air, a cool air of authority, who’s calm leadership is sorely missed. He was not to know, the Toure-Gallas axis would crumble as it has and provide so much opportunity for minutes.
He may have lacked a yard of pace, but made up for it with probably the best positional sense, the club has seen since Tony Adams.
He would have been the perfect foil for either Gallas or Kolo. Oh well!
Shame!
By: Danny on December 20, 2008

The Gilberto of last season had lost a yard & despite his reading of the game I agree he would have struggled in the EPL.
Playing people out of position was something that happened frequently in the `old days`of small squads & obviously some players improved as a result.
However, our squad today is so short of natural, experienced wide midfielders that we`re asking Diaby , Denilson, Eboue , Walcott, Eduardo etc to play in areas they are uncomfortable in.
All of these players are better in their natural positions but AW simply has no other options.
Plenty of people have mentioned the need for a DM but surely a couple of decent wide men would improve the squad substantially.
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 20, 2008

Flint, Arsene wanted that to happen but I saw an interview with Gilberto at the time when he first lost his place to Flamini and he said he was not interested in moving back on a permanent basis although he would help out there if required.
It was a real shame because he would have been a great player to keep around the squad and he would have made a great centre-back with his positional sense and his heading ability. But I guess Arsene had to do the decent thing after all his years of service to the club and let him go where he could continue in a midfield role.

I’m really interested in your belief in the similarities between us now and the & 70’s.
Where do you see the mental strengths that that side had? If ever we had several captains on the pitch it was in that side. I can’t see that with the current rosta.
Probably no argument that this lot are more talented but mentally?
The world has moved on a long way from hte footballers of those days who only had running a pub to look forward to when they retired.
Didn’t Big John come from a mining family? While recent Arsenal p[layers have had their run ins with the law none had the natural criminal propensity of a Peter Storey. My point is that they were a tough lot.

Consolsbob
Where was the mental strength the season before, when they lost 12 games & drew 18, & won only 12 ?
They got the confidence, belief & with it the mental strength from the latter part of the ICFC run. That really amounted to good performances against Ajax & coming back from the dead against Anderlecht, at a super charged Highbury.
We have had this conversation before. The side was built in the main from 1964 onwards. 7 years for a lot of them.
This team is in its 3rd season & therefore much more advanced than the 70/71 side, at the same stage.
I think you have to have mental strength to even play for a top PL team nowdays.
A winning mentality & team togetherness will come from stringing a decent set of results.
This team will get it at some point, maybe not this season but who knows ?
AIC
I get your point but I am not suggesting that eg Denilson is set to be a wide player but it will not harm him or others to play in different areas to help make them comfortable, whatever the circumstances.
With regard to Gilberto’s lack of pace, I would say that the majority of top CBs, over the years & today, would not be even as quick as him.
eg Bould & Adams, Keown in his latter effective years, Hypia etc…

Simply put, the quality of the current squad is average at best that’s the reason we’re struggling but AW don’t see that, why?
He’s no more interested in winning the title; his only interest is to develop players and sell them to Spain and perhaps Italy.
AW has said that winning does not make you a good manager but developing players does.
Unfortunately, the players he develops don’t stay with the club but leaves so he restarts the whole process of development again.
Its a non-title winning cycle we’re in and unless we break it by buying better players, which is not going to happen until AW is no more, we won’t win anything as he continues to bring in average French/African players to develop.
Last season, AW needed to buy a CB and a striker to cover for the absence of Toure because Senderos was average. There were proposals to bring in Anelka to support Ade but he didn’t and we lost our chance to win a 4th title in 12 years.
I don’t see us winning anything with these lightweight average French/African players.

Great points Flint. I’m not in a position to comment on the team of the 70’s, but it seems that what people forget is the years of hard work before the great teams were formed. Everyone remembers the peak years of past players and teams and conveniently overlooks the years or months of looking average or inconsistent before they clicked.
As a club, Arsenal has been forced to make sacrifices in order to grow and move forward. It’s a miracle that Arsene has kept us competitive throughout this period. He strongly feels this team is on the brink of greatness. I think he has earned the time needed to prove it.

howard,
do you HAVE to add nationalist adjectives every time you mention players?
“French/African”?
Can you ever make a point without attributing any weakness in a player to their country of origin?
Do you REALLY think Chelsea have been good cause of Lampard, Cole and Cole, instead of Drogba, Carvalho Essien? Do you really think the invinsibles were great because of Cambell, Cole and Parlour and not because of Henry, Pires and Viera?
Besides, how can you complain Wenger did not buy Anelka when he is just another “French” player?
We are going to beat Liverpool…you know why? Cause Carragher, with his “English steel”, is going to score an own goal as silly as the one he scored against Hull. Yes – or maybe concede a penalty rugby tackling some spanish or french player cause he is too slow to keep up with him.

Arsene Wenger’s ‘arrogance’ to listen to others, other than his own voice will eventually drive this dear club down.
The 60,000 fans that faithfully present themselves at the grove paying the highest ticket prices week-in-week-out won’t be there forever. The so-called 58,000 on waiting list will drop. I forsee problems offloading season tickets next season if we don’t win anything.
It will all be AW’s fault if this happens as he keeps on relying on these average players who can’t get us anywhere other than losing to teams like Fulham, Hull, Stoke and drawing with the Spurs leading 4:2 with 4 minutes to go.
Barcelona is reported to be chasing RvP so he has to plan developing new players again.
The training process cycle will never end for us to win anything; the vultures of Italy and Spain are waiting to pounce on any player who develops fully.
AW will eventually fail with this policy and the Arsenal will be the eventual loser; let’s all stop AW before it’s too late.

Actually I think Howard has a point about some of our bigger names.
We just about hung on to Adebayor after he`d had one good season & should we fail to qualify for the CL next season wait for bids for RVP, Cesc etc.
They may be loyal but they`re ambitious young men & want to achieve things & may not want to buy into the longevity of AW`s plans.

Don’t you think that’d happen regardless of the nationality? I’m 100% sure that Bentley would jump ship.

The worry that the players will go elsewhere after we develop them is a genuine one and the fact that Howard made this point is irrelevant.

Lest anyone be tooo concerned about players moving on….
who has money? Half the teams are in debt and have to sell, but who is buying? Man city yes. Chelsea no.
Howard, I am willing to bet that those 58k on the waiting list will not take their name off any time in the future. Arsenal are still the best ticket in town.
At least, I’m sure you won’t give up your ticket till Spuds finish building their new stadium in 15 years and you can get tickets to watch the true British talents of Bentley and Dawson.

Aw is wasting his time bringing in young average players from abroad develop them and see them jump ship. Its a cycle that will never end more so when he’s not prepared to bring in matured quality as pertains in POOL, CHAVSKI and MANU.
The Barca’s, Madrid’s and the rest will come over and snap up those who’re fortunate enough to make it Hleb, Flamini etc.
Its also no guarantee that these players will all make it; Aliadere, Senderos come to mind.
In effect, we’re in a tightrope situation: the players that develops leave, those not good also leaves meanwhile AW refuses to bring in quality so when are we going to develop players who will stay, play together and win something for us?
IS ARSENAL THE NEXT LIVERPOOL? 18 YEARS WITHOUT A TITLE?

Howard,
Do you have anything football specific to discuss prior to the Liverpool game or are you just going to spout your usual popycock?
Last time I checked we were not in a relegation battle ala the tiny tots, so where does the question of Wenger becoming the new Brian Clough come up from?
You insinuate that it is only the foreign players who agitate for a move once they develop or reach prominence. Have you noticed just how many times players like David Bentley, John Terry, Frank Lampard and numerous others issue velied threats through the press to their club each time their contract is up for renewal?
Lets look at AW’s most recent purchases and see if the players recruited are average.
Would you call Sagna average? What about Eduardo? Nasri? Coquelin? Ramsey?
You are the one driving this dear club down with your blinkered world view and enduring pessimism.
By: Alex on December 20, 2008

A lot of our fans can only judge the quality of a player by his price tag. A better way to judge the quality of our players is to look at the players who were not good enough. Aliadiere, Hoyte, Upson, Sidwell, Bentley, and Flamini, for example, were not good enough for Arsenal, but are still able to gain praise for their performances at lesser teams.

By: Steve on December 20, 2008

Poliziano,
None of those players mentioned cost us anything but just weren`t quite at the level to make it with us.
A price tag guarentees nothing but AW has such a great record with (bigger) buys that they are almost exclusively top quality. Apart from Jeffers I can`t think of an expensive embarrassment.
I think that`s part of some fans frustration right now. They trust him to spend well & the money is there so why not back himself with one or two in January ?
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 20, 2008

If Wenger finds a player who can improve the team, that’s great. What I don’t believe is that every one of the myriad players mentioned as a transfer target is better than the players we already have.
By: Poliziano on December 20, 2008
at 9:55 pm
Poliziano – get with the programme! Don’t you know that the best players are always the ones not playing for Arsenal? We are also blessed with people full of the gift of hindsight when they’re not busy polishing their crystal balls.
It’s easy to come up with a fantasy list of players, but the skill is about getting the balance of the team right, not just throwing a load of names into a hat. If we think we’re obsessed, it’s nothing compared to the hours Arsene spends working on improving this team, but he gets no credit from some people!
By: Passenal on December 20, 2008

everybody is missing the point….
in comparison to Spurs, Chelsea and Man U we are nowhere…
why ?
no trophies
each of the clubs pursue agressive policys to sign ENGLISH players… french players don’t know what trophys look like… especially in England
look at the world class english talent on display at Spurs – Robinson, Jenas, Dawson, Huddlestone, Bent, O’hara – All WINNERS
there should be a clear out of all the french LOSERS… otherwise we face mid table obsucurity
By: Muppet on December 20, 2008

Poiziano,
I agree. Practically all of the players we are linked with would not improve the team.
Personally, I trust AW to do just that with whoever he buys next.
By: Paulie Walnuts on December 20, 2008
at 10:23 pm
Paulie,
So since we trust the man to spend our money wisely, why the impatience? If he knows someone who will benefit the team, and available at a good price he will buy…If you say fans trust him, why don’t you let him do his job.
The whole problem comes from fans who think they know better than Wenger, and the fact of the matter is, they absolutely know nothing.
Where did AIC got his coaching badge? Where did Howard got his license in nationalistic drivel that has nothing to do with football?
I doubt they even know how to manage their own thoughts! Let alone manage a football club.
The only one who has a badge in running a football club, and proved he knows what he’s doing…is Arsene, the man who won the double twice, 3 league titles, 4 FA cups…..
I recommend watching “Arsenal the Official History” DVD, then you will know more about your club before you start driveling all over us. During Arsene years, we have not finished less than 4th in 12 years, when 5th, 7th, and 12th were sometimes nothing but the norm. We played CL for 10 consecutive years under Wenger….When did we do that before?
Know your history, see where we were and where we are now….if you can’t see the difference, you’re legally blind. You get spoiled rotten and the first one to turn on, is the man who spoiled you..
===
Howard
“In the abundance of water….the fool is thirsty” With every post, you really prove to us that you know nothing and see nothing but the colors of your flag. Good for you, the problem is…they don’t play the national anthem before club games. You support England not Arsenal.

G4E: a very good post, I agree about some people needing to know the history of their own club. Reading posts by Flint and Consolbob about the time for the 71 team to mature says it all for me. Some people are just to impatient in todays world.

I agree with Muppet and Howard.
I admire some of the optimism on here, I really do. But you’re totally deluded. Take off those red-tinted glasses and just see what Johnny Foreigner’s doing to our beloved club.
This team’s going straight to hell in a handcart. Foreign youngsters being developed at an English team and then toddling off?! You couldn’t make it up!
And we used to have a bloody empire.
Insolent hoodies like Song and Denilson are running amok in the dressing room (I’m aware that only Malaysians really run amok). Is it any wonder that decent men like Steve Bould and Pat Rice are scared to put their feet down?
We’re not even allowed to celebrate Christmas because there are too many Islamists in the squad.
The brats are out of control. We need some have-a-go heroes like Phil Neville, Dean Windass and Kevin Davies. Fritz, Carlos and Jean-Paul need to get an O-level in English sh- I mean grit.
Cos who’s going to give to them now? Monsieur Wenger? Don’t make me laugh! He’s like a lazy gourmande, growing fat on foie gras and fancy football, dining out on former success.
If he don’t sort it out then ‘09 is going to be l’année chaotique for Arsenal. Mark my words.

G4E, Steve
Thanks for the advice. I don`t want to get into the `Ive been going longer than you`argument that you seem to fancy but I`ve seen plenty of poor Arsenal players & teams over the years & certainly know my Arsenal history.
As for fans thinking they know better than the manager – well, that`s a first. Never heard that one before.
Just because people have opinions about players, team selection, transfer policy, tactics etc do you really think they believe they think they would make a better manager than AW ?
Why do you lot have to be so black or white about things ?
As for `drivelling all over us` – please explain who `us` is.

Fact: Howard recycles the same old boring stuff over and over and over again.

Liverpool fans: I was at Wembley in 1971. After the game he went to a pub near Stonebridge Park, I think it was. There was a whole load of Liverpool fans came in. Although they were disappointed, they hadn’t lost their sense of humour and we had a great time together. I’ve had enormous respect for Liverpool fans ever since.

How many times do you read on here that Wenger should of subbed this player or that player, or signed x or y. Surely that means those people think they know better than Wenger.

Paulie,
1- I wasn’t necessarily opposing what you said @9:30pm, but merely adding to your comment that if we trust the man with the money we should let him decide when to make the most of it. Why do you think he’s not buying? To piss the fans off?
2- You’ve been on this blog for a while, you really don’t see that some of the posters here think they know better than Wenger? Come on Paulie, I think you’re smarter than that.
3- “Us” who are being realistic about our demands. “Us” who know that good teams take time to put together. “Us” who don’t look at the passports before we hire someone. Do you want me to go on?…the list is long about “Us”.
