The Lady Thinks They Are Tramps

The bonhommie that PHW liked to portray as existing in the boardroom was shattered this morning with Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith going on the offensive following her departure from the Arsenal Board:

I’m in total shock and very upset about the appalling way I have been treated. The board have no manners whatsoever and my views were ignored on many occasions. I can’t understand why I have been removed in such a ruthless fashion. I had no intention of selling my shares and was no threat to the lockdown agreement between the directors. I have also had no proper explanation as to why they wanted me out so much. It is very difficult to accept, especially after what my family has done for Arsenal for so many years. I am extremely upset at what’s happened and the way it has been done. I’ve never had a thought of selling my Arsenal shares and I still don’t

There are, of course, two sides to every story and whilst Bracewell-Smith is undoubtedly upset, you cannot help but wonder what instigated her removal. It is disingenuous of her to come out and say that she does not know why she has been removed. She knows why and in her comments, she hints at the very reason when she says her views were ignored on many occasions.

To me, that carrys more than a hint of a fit of pique on her part, perhaps more than a tad of a bruised ego. This is ‘confirmed’ with the comments of a ’source’:

She always felt the club was being run for Fiszman. Her family own nearly as much as him but she felt she was not being recognised in the way the club was run. She got fed up with that and they got fed up with her trying to exert her position — that she should be treated equally

The notion that she felt her views should be taken more note of simply because of her family’s shareholding is somewhat naive. Board decisions are normally taken through consensus with any number of people having to temper their views. If she was not able to do so, then may be it was the right time for her to go.

One thing that needs to be recognised by all of the directors; the club is not there for their individual benefit. It is there for the supporters. Hill-Wood and Fiszman have both said in the past that they are ‘custodians’. They would do well to remember that as would Bracewell-Smith. There is the obvious financial investment they have made in buying their shares but they paid substantially less than the shares are worth now.

Boardroom politics are never pretty when the become public knowledge. The Daily Telegraph speculates that the other directors want to sell their shares but that idea does not sit comfortably with the utterances of PHW recently which given Arsenal is a plc have to be to a certain extent, truthful. Others speculate she opposed the appointment of the new CEO, perhaps fearful of more dilution of her views.

Usmanov lurks in the background, the media believe he is adopting a ‘watching’ brief until the time is right for him to buy her shares. Maybe he will. Maybe Silent Stan will buy them. Who knows. PHW indicated that some existing board members might be interested in her shares. We shall see.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Not a good time to start shaking things up, I hope this will not effect the team in general.

  2. I look to you to give an educated view on these matters, YW.

It is all beyond me, particularly as we are bound to be in for a period of unlimited speculation.

All I hope for is that, in the long term, the club, I support, can be able to keep the dignity that many others have lost, in these last few years.

  3. Very worrying….too much boardroom powerplay is not a template for stability.

  4. Instability at board level, instability on the pitch.

    These are worrying times.

  5. Ice Cream for Crow!

  6. Yes wuts all this boardroom shenanigans. Bring on the Barca. Ole! I think we are going to get Roma, Chelsea will get Barca, Liverpool vs Villareal and Man United vs Inter Milan.

Despite how badly we have been playing when it comes to it I think we are still capable of outplaying any team put in front of us. Go on you gooners.

  7. We got Roma!

  8. ARSENAL vs ROMA

    !!!

Awesome, i’m looking forward to this.

  9. Tough, tough draws for the other English clubs.

Wow! What an exciting 2nd stage this could be.

  10. Its Roma!!

  11. Two ONE MAN TEAMS going up against each other. Its going to be great!

    Fabregas vs Totti!

    Bring it on!!

  12. That’s the spirit, Naga gunner.

  13. Poliziano!

The season of love is getting to us both! Which is not necessarily a bad thing!!

    Seasons greetings to you, mate!

    Cheers!!

  14. Beefheart quoted on an Arsenal blogsite…and I have decided to watch my briefs too…I find it very relaxing….and Roma…one of my first girlfriends…

It is indeed a good day to be a gooner.

  15. he he he manure v inter ha ha fuckin ha (mourinho and drink bottle of wine with alex after name shit)…resurgent real will beat theshit off scousers, while chelski will lose against la Juve!!

  16. Excellent draw – the defeat in Porto was well worth it!

  17. Roma are currently 10th in Serie A..goodness me can you imagine the booing that must be going on there….I believe that they use a specialised arse whistle in Italy…made from pasta…it is traditional to cook them up and eat them with a special sauce after the game if the team loses….

  18. is it true aresenal are going to get a cut from the Diarra fee(£20m)?

  19. Phew, its Roma. Hopefully (injuries being kind) we should be a lot better during that stage, Eduardo & Walcott etc should be back & in form by then.

This probably is the best draw we could have hoped for, a beatable opponent for us & avoidable sides for the other 3. They seem to have paid for all the luck they normally get in the PL – particularly ManU (all season favourite with the refs). Liverpool as well after the penalty decisions in the CL last session. I can’t help feel very satisfied with the wily foxes being pitted against each other ensuring one of them would be eliminated – Fergi/Jose.

  20. Yup, its rumoured to be 5M (25% sell-on clause). Almost enough to buy another Sagna type CB/DM.

  21. Great draw… really fancy us to beat Roma as they play football like us… any sort of defensive minded team and we have trouble breaking them down. Should be an open game and Arsenal prgressing to the next round.

Chelsea got a tough one, so have Man U, and so have Liverpool. Looks like luck was on our side for once, then again we still have to go out and win and not assume it to be easier than any other team. They progressed top for a reason.

  22. Roma are currently 10th in Serie A…goodness me…there must have been a lot of booing over there….they use specially designed Italian Arse Whistles…made of pasta….tradition is to cook em up and eat them with a special sauce after game if the team lose….intensifies the booing I believe.

  23. Frank

Nice one haha… sure we can add some sauce to their shaky league campaign. Another 5-1 should do it.

Walcott being back along with Eduardo and Nasri will bring glory come May. :P

  24. Im trying not to think too far ahead to Roma just yet tho.. players have to focus on sunday, once we beat Liverpool and if we beat Liverpool i should say ( Im just pretty confident we will take 3 points )

I just wonder what all the pundits and football “experts” will say about our chances of winning the league. 5 points off top spot is nothing, they seem to rate the other teams yet we are still in there!!.. I thought our season finished the way they were going on, long way to go … nice little run of form will go down nicely for the christmas period.

Looking forward to coming into work monday and seein everyone in a joyous mood and positive about the second half of the season. Hopefully this is the case.. come on u reds!!

  25. This is London calling…this is London Calling…..all gooners around the world….your club needs you…your team need your support…..Sunday 21st Dec 16.00 – 17.45…important…very, very important…

Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal..clickclickclick…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all..clickclickclick…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal…ARSENAL…clickclickclick

dotdotdash…dotdotdash…this is London Calling…this is London Calling

  26. Any more team news for Sunday????

  27. Good draw but means nothing if the average players don’t step up.

On the boardroom intrigues, I say its a preparation for Kroenke to have his way. Honestly, I’ll prefer Kroenke to Usmanov any day. However, Usmanov don’t have the money to buy now so its more of Kroenke.

Usmanov has seen his wealth fallen from 5billion to 1billion since the financial meltdown according to Forbes. Usmanov just don’t have the money to buy and the board prefers kroenke to the russian.

  28. Naah…you don’t know anymore than anyone else, Haw Haw

This is London Calling…This Arsenal Calling…all Arsenal Supporters…all gooners…big game on Sunday….get behind the team…dotdotdash…dotdotdash….

    ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL ARSENAL

  29. Roma! That’s fantastic. I don’t have any fear of the Italians. I am sure they will remember what we did in the San Siro last year.

Great news. If we have a better injury-list by then and maybe a signing in Jan we could be in business in the CL.

Come on you rip roaring reds!

  30. Great headline Yogi!

I am well chuffed with Roma. 10th place in Serie A. I hope we can get our players back by then.

  31. Howard

I think they see Lady Nina as the weakest link out of all the strong share holders… in which they cant risk her selling out to someone else, so it sort of pushes her to sell where now Stan will be in the best position to take them off her hands. And Fat Orange head geeza just lost alot of money so i dont think he can buy them. Maybe there was some sort of disagreement, and maybe its all down to Kroenke who’d rather have them shares than rish someone else taken a chunk of the club.

  32. Roma is a good draw. No doubt. roma come out to play – unlike most italian teams, and taht’s who arsenal tend to play well.

But as important all of our competitors will have to prioritize their matches in the CL over the ones in the league for at least a couple of weeks. Those are hard draws.

Can you imagine how defensive liverpool is going to play against Madrid?

  33. cazzo hai roma….il tuo uscire!!!

  34. Ha ha.. Chrisgoona, my friend!

    the eternal optimist, LOL!

Mate, seems like a long time eh?I still think the fat rapist is in pole position, despite the financial crunch. I dont think the board can hold on for too long now, but given the choice I would pick kroenke, certainly the LESSER of the two evils!

I love your enthusiasm about our chances for the league. I will just say this.. I hope at the end of the season you can come in and tell me “I told you so”.

    And…

    “come on u reds!!”,

    mate, are you cheering liverpool?

    Cheers!!

  35. Naga

Nice to hear from u once again..

Bad mistake on my part, i forgot we are wearing yellow…. are the players actually wearing yeallow then i take it??.. or just fans??

Will always remain optimistic with Wenger in charge, the guy is still the best manager to come to our club, class is permanent mate. The same might not be said of some of our players, but Wenger will get them all playing well in a system.

  36. Lady Nina has been stabbed in the back by Fiszman and co. They have now given her the opportunity to sell her shares to Usmanov

  37. Chrisgoona,

It is claimed by the scousers and generally accepted around the world that Liverpool are the “Reds”. And “come on u reds” is most recognizable with liverpool and many times Man utd use it as well (they also have a song whose chorus goes by those words).

I guess gunners use it to a certain extent, but I personally use “go gunners” or “up the guns”, thats much more “Arsenal” or “us” in my view.

Anyway, doesnt matter does it? looking forward to the game…

    Cheers!!

  38. You are a miserable f***er are you not Peter old chap?

  39. Why would the Board stab her in the back if that meant her shares would go to the fat Russian?

Does not make sense. Fiszman is cleverer than that.

  40. So it is fatism today is it, Consolsbob?

  41. “COME ON YOU REDS” has been used by Arsenal fans for years, so I don’t see why we should stop just because Liverpool are more widely known as the “Reds”.

We do wear red after all. Oi, THE REAL REDS ARE FROM LONDON!

  42. I have never sung ‘go gunners’ or ‘up the guns’ in my life at Highbury…one or 2. Where did you get that from,ng?

  43. Come on ye reds…clickclickclick…come on ye reds…clickclickclick…

  44. Arsene Wengers Red Army….clickclickclick…Arsene Wengers Red Army…clickclickclick

  45. The draw has certainly been kinder to us on paper especially avoiding Barca before we have quite hit some form.I think it is always better to get a “big team” that will be prepared to play football and not just try to hit us on the break or play for free kicks and corners. Also hopefully Theo walcott will be back. Although he is still very predictable, he has been a big miss. I think his pace will be very useful in unsettling the defences in Europe. But as Howard says it wont mean sh*t if the wrong Arsenal turns up. Remember PSV?

On balance for once no English tie seems to have an easy tie. I think this tie will be just as hard becoz Roma will be going all out to book their place in the final in their own staidum in front of their own fans. How much more of an incentive is that? Easy tie it is not!!!!But we have faced sterner tests and come out on top. Will the “real” Arsenal please turn up!

  46. I will resort to all kind of ‘isms’ where greed threatens Arsenal.

There. Now they know what they are up against, all those who wish to use our club for their own ends will just back off!

  47. Please don’t attack AIC, Consolsbob.

  48. Sorry I am not being ismist…ismism is not my style…..I am up for some f***ing serious isms as well…fancy a good ism this evening in fact…

  49. That’s a really good point, G4L, I hadn’t thought of that.

Can you imagine if the CL final was to be at Ashburton Grove? Just think how much incentive that would give us!

  50. Botulism is a good one.

  51. Prism is very good to…’you are a real prist aren’t you?’…when people say that it makes you feel ten feet tall…

  52. What about schism?

  53. Don’t forget narcissism.

Very handy that one for when you want to upset those who know big, obscure words. Oh.

  54. I thought I told you to stop attacking AIC.

  55. Hahaha… you witty bastard, Poliziano..

“Up the guns”, Naga..?? bet it all goes quiet when you belt that one out..

Lady Nina is a woman scorned…am scared of what she might do.. but mildly excited ~

  56. …as is masochism of course.

  57. Do beware Frank, optim’ism is frowned upon by many !!

Don’t worry about PSB, he is on the wrong millet again, as dear old Snout prefers the canary.

The “reds” are any team that plays in that colour & always was, even when the ‘pool were in the 2nd Division.

  58. Interesting point about Alf Ramsey, yesterday Consolsbob.

    I hadn’t heard that one.

Might explain why that plank Sadler went to Mexico, in 1970, whilst Super Stan Simpson, didn’t get a sniff.

  59. Definitely is a good day to be a gooner….oh yes.

  60. Frank – when is optimism sheer insanity ? The board are at each other’s throats..the players are … well, playing… the fans hate each other!!
So we get Roma ? Is that so good ? Yeah, it is.. but, dammit, sell those pills please!

  61. Flint. At the risk of boring our younger posters…

I’ve seen Bob Wilson interview Big John and Bob McNab about that 70’s side. Both very interesting.

Raddy was very upset by the treatment he received from a certain manager who he refused to mention and Bob said he left Arsenal because he couldn’t stand to see how things were going. Good players being sold, bad players being brought in. Plus all the behind the scenes moves to get rid of Bertie Mee.

He also was not a fan of Alan Ball as a team mate. Said after a season of playing with him, he understood why Everton sold him.

He also sid, and this did surprise me, that he didn’t enjoy a singlt minute of the Double season as he was playing in pain and felt he was not doing his job. He certainly fooled me!

It was clear from both interviews that they all saw that side as very special indeed.

  62. Ponies normally have suppositories, rather than pills, don’t they?

Perhaps that is why they have a black view of life.

  63. I think the manager and the players are the bees knees…very fond of the players…and I think AW is a genius…I love watching it all gradually come together…..never had any time for the Board….in fact I have been largely Boardist all of my life I don’t mind saying…..Lady Neeny Nah Naw has never interested me…and Danny is as guilty with his blood diamonds business as Usmanov is his own ill-gotten gains…Young Mr Grace is just a bit of a twit….Kroenke? well he seems to have some credentials but who knows…. I think the club should really belong to the fans …which is why I hate the fans dising the manager and players….the manager and the players are what it is all about for me…and Highbury….Highbury 2 now.

We are so so privileged to watch this squad…and the next one coming up…it really is good to be a gooner.

  64. Consolsbob

The manager has to be Terry Neill, who moved him to Blackburn, soon after he took over. His time had passed though.

Bob was out of the side for long spells the following season, with a complicated injury, that he never seemed to fully recover from.

Again he was moved on because his time had gone. I think the club gave him a free to get him a bit of money.

I always thought Alan Ball disrupted the team, which was never quite the same again, although it came close in 72/73.

The stand out bad buy must have been Gus Caesar’s idol Jeff Blockley.

There was a lot of dissatisfaction, when Don Howe left. I know that for a fact because I knew Bob Wilson & George Wright, who went with DH to WBA.

Frank McLintock was particularly upset but I didn’t know it got to the point of trying to get Bertie Mee out.

    Interesting.

  65. Flint – yeah, i’ll take it up the Arse… and fair enough.. still, it’s not black..more brown .. and ready to fizz..

  66. Yes. They spoke very highly of Don Howe.

McNab definitely gave the impression he left by choice though.

Jeff Blockley! First in a line of curious centre back signings over the next few years!

  67. Combine them with pasta arse whistles (or maybe the Curled French Horn could be more appropriate for the equine orifice) & you will be ready to blow, just like Frank.

  68. You sound like one of dkgooner’s women, ponyboy.

  69. He probably had the choice of staying, probably as a reserve because Sammy Nelson was coming on, or going & getting a decent pay off from Wolves.

In his case free was a way of awarding a player, who had given good service, but was unlikely to figure in the side, a payoff . He would pick up the transfer fee, that otherwise would have been paid.

Don’t forget, in those days, the clubs still very much held the upper hand over the players.

  70. Dammit… please don’t tell him.. he gets very angry!

  71. Yes we got Mancini from QPR & fought off relegation, while Frank McLintock came within a couple of points of The League Championship, with the very same west London club.

Football is daft, always was, always will be …. that’s why we love it.

  72. No argument there Flint.

  73. You all really think Roma will try harder cause the final is at their stadium? Naw. These guys have incentive enough without it.

Anyway it’s an easier draw. Mid table in Italy is not a great position.

Personally I don’t see anyone buying any team any time soon. That is just talk. Niña might want to sell her shares or not but there are just no buyers. For anything.

As for man city I’m guessing you will see all those funds not materialize. Least not yet. 40 dollar oil will do that to them

  74. “I think the manager and the players are the bees knees…very fond of the players…and I think AW is a genius…”

Me too, which is why it really pains me when people claiming to be supporters come up with disrespectful nicknames and so on.

  75. Flint, Consolsbob…..you know so much more than me about football…I started to get to Arsenal games in the late sixties…though I sort of inherited Arsenal from my Dad and Uncle…..can’t remember a single game though…except the obvious ones…and even the ones I remember I can’t be sure it is not becuase I have seen recent recordings….I used to have to ask people at the end of the game what the score was and who had scored….don’t you think that Arsenal would have been so much better with a defensive midfield player in those days though?…with pace I mean especially down the flanks…sorry to ask..

  76. Hey, quick question, is there a new draw for the quarter finals? thanks

  77. Arsene Wenger is on it again; saying that he’s more interested in developing the players he has than to buy in January.

Its unfortunate that AW is not seeing the harm he’s doing keeping average players like Almunia, Diaby, Song, Eboue, Bendtner, Denilson etc on the wage bill of the club.

They’re just not good enough to play regularly for the Arsenal. These players are only fit as back-ups for the moment rather than regulars.

I feel for Fabregas because he’s not getting the right quality of players to play with, hence is current dwindling form. Its pathetic.

Perhaps, AW is looking for another French/African player ‘only’ to buy.

  78. You are a liar, Haw Haw…I doubt you feel for anyone…let alone an Arsenal football player….

Can’t count on your support on Sunday then….

Wan Arsene Wenger…theres only wan Arsene Wenger….wan Arsene Wennnnggeer….theres only wan Arsene Wwenngggerrr.

  79. Hey Frank, are you still there?

Why is it RVP….Click Click Click
    and not
    …RVP….Clap Clap Clap?
    ===

Great draw, and imagine as many said if Walcott is back on the right and in form. Eduardo’s runs and penetration and in form, we will be something else.

We just have to remember in these crucial games, it’s how you play on the day. Roma maybe in 10th ( I haven’t seen any of their games) but on the day we have to give our all to win “Fans & Players”.
    ===

It is definitely weird that the arrival of Kroenke and Gazidis results in the departure of a long time shareholder. It would be very stupid for the board to bring in Kroenke and then let the power go to the Oligarch by pissing off a major shareholder. If Lady Nina sells, I think and also hope, it will be to Kroenke.

    Otherwise, it won’t be pretty.
    ===

It is now the most important time for the fans to abandon their cynical and selfish thoughts, and unite behind the team. Have some sense of sacrifice, it feels good to give. If you love someone or if you love Arsenal, you won’t stop to think for a minute…how much did I give?
… The rewards will come, the harder it gets the sweeter the win.

Let’s scream out loud on Sunday to beat Liverpool, I know I will be…. from here.

    G4E

  80. Howard,

Would you swap Cesc for an Englishman with true English gritt?

  81. Cowards always like to hind behind a fake something, a fake reason, something to hide their own weakness or blame it on someone else. They keep using the same lame excuse to try to destroy something beautiful.

    Arsenal don’t need Cowards…

  82. Team for Sunday ;

The keeper & back four unchanged

With Nasri back I`d prefer Eboue RM & Song alongside Cesc (because of Gerrard`s runs) but Denilson will get the nod I reckon.

    Adebayor / RVP up front

There`s no reason that side can`t do the business

  83. Howard:
Try and put things in context. Rather than read quotes from an AW’s interview I recommend you got to Arsenal.com and listen\watch the interview.

Questions are asked by journalist about the transfer window, but he tried to play it with a straight bat.

A lot of emotions are fueled by inaccurate assumptions. AW tried to get players in before the start of the season, but for one reason or the other deals fell through. I do not believe he did not – and he has never claimed not to have tried.
As AW once said, there are 3 side to every player transfer.
Rather than complain he has tried to do the best he can with what he has. Whilst not diluting his ambitions. Please for the love of God, credit should be given where due.

  84. Jeff Blockley? Hallelujah! Better than Alexandra Burke’s version.
I’m with Frank and Passenal, on that long-term magic carpet ride that is Arsene’s Experimental Project. Wherever it takes me, is fine by me. Because I know it’s the summit. (Or summit).

  85. G4E, you have to sing it with a quif, leather jacket, drainpipes and winkle pickers….flick knife (switchblade..rubber ones on stall)….crouch..you do that and you naturally start clicking…we do it, seventeen of us on the way to games…I like to take a break from the stall and do this thing in formation with the guys as a bit of light releif before the game….sometimes we like to dance down the steps from the first tier to the cannons…quite a sight…I am the one with the big white wings and Muppet on the back of my jacket…I still have a lot of faith in Muppet…oh and the captains headband…

  86. The same as you PW apart from Denilson in for Song. Liverpool will come and probably be pretty negative in thier approach. We need Denilson to keep and use the ball well and hopefully create chances.

I predict Nasri to make another big game Emirates impact.

    1-0

  87. Don’t forget to listen for the train horns on Sunday everyone…..circulated the tablature last week…special thanks to the train drivers union…..

    parpparp, parpparpparp, parpparpparpparp…parpparp

    parpparpparppaaaarp…parpparpparppaaaarp

  88. Mingus you are a star…..

  89. Frank, do you know that you are a nutter?

    Love the support though mate!

    COME ON YOU GOONERS!!

  90. arsenalvision

Denilson in the team on Sunday will not create chances. He will rather destroy the teams’ movement forward by passing backwards and sideways.

    His shots are poor
He has no pace to help the team
    He can’t cross

Denilson is just not ready but see him on Sunday, Arsene Wenger is so crazy about him.

He came to England on an ‘exceptional talent’ visa but so far has exhibited none of that talent.

  91. Howard you so right; we all agree with you.

Now will you go somewhere else?

    No?

    I thought so; OK

Here’s what I’m going to do: ignore everything you post.

You’ve just disappeared from this blog..get it?

  92. Well, however bad you think Denilson is, at least he’s better than anyone in Liverpool’s midfield, which is what matters on Sunday.

  93. Denilson, Denilson, Arsenal all the way,
I know we will win the game whenever he does play.

    Ohhhh

Denilson, Denilson, Arsenal all the way,
I know we will win the game whenever he does play.

  94. That’s to the tune of Jingle Bells, if you can’t guess.

  95. Reclaiming the ball, setting up the play,
Running past them all, laughing all the way.
Loyal gooners sing, making spirits bright,
O what fun it is to see Denilson play tonight.

  96. A week or two ago, on the left wing he was tried,
Then the following game, he played the other side.
His touch was sure and smooth, his tackling just as hot,
We thought that he would score a goal whene’er he took a shot.

  97. Genius.. “Running past them all, laughing all the way”

  98. A world-class player is he, albeit still young,
As long as football’s played, his name will still be sung.
Whoever has the ball, in our time of need,
Give it to Denilson and watch us take the lead.

  99. This is pure genius Poliziano

  100. Great festive song there Poliziano. I wish I was going to the game on Sunday so that I could join in with the singing.

  101. Let’s see if AIC can write some lyrics for In the Bleak Midwinter.

  102. Great stuff Poliziano….keep it up mate.

    Arsenal all the way.
