Chelsea 1 – 2 Arsenal
1 – 0 Djourou (o.g.) (32)
1 – 1 van Persie (59)
1 – 2 van Persie (62)
Having been laid low by a dose of the ‘flu – and no girls, it wasn’t the “bloke” variety, Mrs YW said it was the proper stuff – the visit to Stamford Bridge provided a much needed tonic. Rather like the pills and potions I have consumed, the win does not represent the cure all to the season, more it suppresses the symptoms to help you return to some sort of normality.
Chelsea had before the match, been irresponsible in their media outbursts. In the pre-match preview that I started to pen on Friday and that fell by the wayside, I wondered if it they were intemperate and would galvanise the squad onto bigger things, starting with three points. Perhaps they did. Perhaps not.
Either way, the starting line-up was boosted by the first of the returnees from injury. It was still not full strength which gives the result more credibility. Chelsea dominated the possession in the first half but did not seem particularly threatening when the final pass came to be played. Were they lacking in confidence or were they contained by the Arsenal team? It is hard to be definitive in that judgement.
Despite this they went into the interval in the lead thanks to the sort of mistake that has been all too prevalent this season. Almunia did the hard part in collecting a cross safely but instead of showing the patience required when involved in this sort of match, he released the ball far too quickly and inaccurately to set-up the counter-attack he no doubt visualised. Nasri did not have the support with him nor did he collect the ball.
Instead, Chelsea fashioned space on their right and Bosingwa delivered a decent cross. Djourou’s intervention was one of those things: half the time they concede a corner, the other half is split between flying into the safety of the ‘keeper’s arms or the back of the net. I would not criticise him for trying to intercept; the fault for this was plainly with Almunia.
The first half was a low key performance. Populist Redknapp thought it was a lack of confidence. I am not so sure. To me, the team were trying to prove critics wrong and put in a hardworking performance, a back to basics if you like. Djourou and Gallas both played well in the centre of defence; the former did not let his own goal destroy his confidence as it might that of Senderos. Before the match, Arsene observed that Gallas was regaining respect from his colleagues and the fans. If he continues to perform in this manner, there is no doubt that there would be an outcry if he left in January.
The game turned in the second half in the space of three minutes. van Persie was unbelievably adjudged to be onside and smashed home. It might be the bit of luck that has been missing this season and on previous visits to Stamford Bridge. Whatever the case, Chelsea seemed bemused by it all. They could not respond other than through Terry’s foul on Sagna. Andy Gray seemed to think that the Chelsea captain stayed on the pitch because his feet were less than a foot off the ground. It is much simpler than that. Had Sagna not shown superb tackling technique and won the ball, Terry would have been off.
The turnaround was completed minutes later. Fabregas’ freekick was cushioned into van Persie’s path and despite his shot not being the strongest, it was early enough and well placed enough to beat Cech. The expected onslaught never really materialised. Chelsea enjoyed possession but could have lost by a wider margin had Denilson’s normally assured touch not escaped him.
Much is made of Chelsea’s strength in depth but they looked devoid of ideas yesterday. Part of that would have been their own state of mind, a match they were confident of winning turned out to be considerably tougher than they would have expected but Arsenal worked hard. Players out of position or underrated excelled in the responsibility. Song was understated in midfield, diligent in his work and not overawed by the reputations of those he faced. Cesc meanwhile is going all out to prove that the responsibility thrust upon him is going to enhance his game. He lead by example, prompting and defending with equal aplomb.
Perhaps the most beneficial aspect of the performance was the straightforward 4-4-2 employed. United and Liverpool enjoyed success at Stamford Bridge with that tactic, Arsenal capitalised as well. It means six points out of six from the two games against top four rivals. Now the test is to win the games against ’smaller’ teams.
Arsenal have not emerged from the chaos that never engulfed them. We have been here before. This win can be a springboard to a good unbeaten run, one that sees the seven point gap cut considerably. It can also be the prelude to disappointment. Whatever the case, it is was a much needed confidence booster. As RvP so eloquently put it after scoring the winner, “F’king come on!“.
’til Tomorrow.

What a great victory! Let’s savour it for now but let’s also not get too carried away as we still need to string together a run of victories to make sure this whole thing means something. Let’s hope this doesn’t give Wenger another excuse not to spend in January as we still need EXPERIENCED DM and CB. Can’t wait for the kids in mid week though. Kill the Clarets!

Good Article Yogi, great team performance yesterday. Djourou was really goood, getting to the high balls with ease. Was unlucky with the own goal. Adebayor had a fantastic game, he did brilliantly holding up the ball. RVP was a class apart, great finishing. We didn’t create much, but we took our chances and that is what made the difference. However I will truly enjoy this win if we win the next game. I expected our team to pull off a win today, but next week I really have no idea what to expect.
I really don’t know what to make of Song. He doesn’t have the pace to track back, many times he was outrun by the opposition player. He makes a good header though.

Strange how different people view the game – i personally thought Adebayor had a poor game, but you could see that he was putting in 100% & that kind of made up for it… Song did ok…
The key for me was the balance of the side – Wenger was bang on.

Song played well… read Le Grove the otha day and they said how we will lose the game if Song played..!!.. not everyone can be the manager ey… The guy can play football, people seem to judge players on the appearance a bit too much, he looks very laid back, but he is our strongest tackler in midfield, and best in the air. Song & Cesc in CM could be a more frequent combo. Song allows Cesc to roam a bit more too.

No the question is what game were you watching!???
1 assist and effectively holding the ball up and running down the channels doesnt count as a good game!.. you are simply dillusional and have no respect or judgement for the amount of work a player like Ade puts in.
RvP would have never played so well or scored without Ade giving the Chelsea backline so many problems. His presence and stature up front is frightening for many defenders. Dont tell me your one of them fans that thinks Bendtner is better!! hahahah joka

If you wanted proof of how much the media hate Arsenal, Van Persie’s offside goal shows it.
In the last 4 seasons, Drogba has scored like 5 offside goals against Arsenal. Crucially, it cost us the league last season. The media for the most part didnt even report it.
1. Stamford Bridge Last season. Equaliser. He and Lampard were well offside.
2. League Cup Final 2007. Equaliser. He was well offside when Ballack passed the ball.
3. 2005 at Stamford Bridge. Only goal of the game. He’s offside when Lampard plays him the ball which comes off his shin and past Lehman.
4. August 2005. Second goal. Drogba is offside when he receives the header that sets him off to a one-on-on with Lehman.

Nice post Yogi.
Great battling performance from everyone. Almunia’s mistake thankfully didn’t knock his confidence that much, and I was very impressed with Djourou’s attitude and peformace post-own goal.
I thought Song had the one his best games in the shirt (that I have seen) and I was extremely impressed with Gallas.
As great as everyone was, my man of the match goes to Wenger. Approaching 80 minutes defending a one goal lead, I started to fret (way too much) that Wenger would sub RVP or a winger and chuck on a defensive player, inviting Chelsea to chuck bombs at us. But, with just 8 minutes to go, he brought on Bendtner, which I thought was an inspired decision and certainly contributed to some uncertain attacking from Chelsea.
And regarding the equaliser, it was probably a relief for RVP to finally score against Chelsea and it NOT be ruled offside.
Well done all.

Ateeb you say “Adebayor had a fantastic game” which game did you watch?
Chris Goona got to you first. He had a brilliant game. Ade has a far better touch than Bendtner for now, and that allows him to keep hold of the ball. In the game that I was watching, he was remarkable, given that he had been out for 3 weeks. He held the ball up brilliantly, tortured Ivanovich when the ball was played high up for Ade. Won lots of throw ins in their half. When the players needed someone to keep possession, he was there, stay calmed and did exactly what was expected of him. Excellent performance. And offcourse he had the assist to boast for.
In the last 2 games, what I noticed, was that Bendtner didn’t offer the physical presence that Ade does. And that is purely down to his better first touch, that allows him to hold the ball up brilliantly. And that’s what he provided yesterday. Allowed our players to get into positions to attack.

My word, Ole Gunner, what memory! This is where having a few Englishmen in the team helps – Eboue’s tackle on Terry the last time we played them & Terry’s tackle on Sagna yday. The pundits & media alike wouldn’t want to accept a team on non-english boys beat a team of well paid english & world’s super stars. It pours cold water on the hot debate on the local/foreign debate.
I can’t wait for Eduardo’s return (read return to his pre-injury form), hopefully he is fully geared up by new year.
Though Song had an understated game like YW said, I wonder how Toure would perform in the same role, if Gallas & JD are going to play a regular part in the heart of the defence, maybe Toure could add experience to the team particularly while defending a lead. He is a strong tackler, tireless can occasionally burst forward effectively – particularly because he can shoot powerfully from outside the box. He anyway would probably be replacing Gallas next session as CB & this role would help him find his form again while playing.

About Ade/NB, I was one of those who thought NB would be better than Ade (as Ade has a very good engine & tries the defenders but is frustratingly out of position – disrupting the flow & has a heavy first touch – resulting in him loosing possession) if given enough playing time, before he got his run in the team. After the last few games, it seems to me that NB is probably in the same situation as Walcott was last yr – not ready yet to start & best used as a super (?!) sub for now.

Terry’s injury in the Eboue clash was a result of Terry steaming in and trying to launch the ball, and player, into row Z. If you watch that incident again, Terry sprints at the ball with a face like a robber’s dog chewing a wasp, and really tries to do Eboue damage with his clearance. Unfortunately for Terry, Eboue’s reaction to this nutter running at him was to instintively put his foot up (and both hands out in front of him) in a defensive posture and Terry ends up striking Eboue and injuring himself.
I honestly believe that his injury was a result of him being reckless, not the other way round.

Siva,
Bendtner and Ade are different players. Ade is a complete centre forward, while Bendtner to me is a more of a link up man. If he is played in that position he should start, but as a CF Ade is far better. And for the link up position RVP is better than bendtner. But I think he’s getting there, he has the talent and quality. And is full of confidence.

Great result, but let’s just enjoy it without getting too carried away. Didn’t think anyone was particularly outstanding, but a good solid team performance on a day when Chelsea looked like they’ve lost their way a bit. Was interested in what Wenger said about Djourou before the game and I think the player gave a performance that justified his manager’s confidence in him.
Ade or Bendtner? Well, we have to accept that they are very different in their style of play and not expect the one to play like the other. Ade gives us more muscle up front – he’s physically bigger and stronger than Bendtner and creates more havoc that way in the opposition’s defence, and because he’s such an awkward, unpredictable bastard. Bendtner can’t do that. On the other hand, I think Bendtner has more vision – the pass he made to set up Denilson was pure class – should have produced the 3rd goal. And he should also have credit for the way he took that chance against Kiev (also on his “wrong” foot”).
Given the choice, at present I’d certainly plump for Ade, but I think Bendtner is worthy of his place in the squad – he just needs more time to develop certain sides of his game.

Ole you took the words straight out my mouth with the medias selective amnesia to Chelsea’s previous offside winning goals. It was a thoroughly deserved win with Arsenal showing the all the fight and stomach they have always been criticised as not having but we new they possess. Aslo well said Chris Gooner. Ade was an effective partner for RVp and allowed him to perform his magic buy keeping the defence busy and winning headers in the air, and helping set up attacks.
I also I think Song played well in the midfield. He looks cumbersome and never looks like he is making an effort so his work always seems lazy but boy the man works hard and he covered effectively for Cesc and enabled him to play in positions he is more effective.
Just consistency needed here now not January transfer window. The best thing though was to see the look on the Chelsea fans faces after the game and listening to Andy Gray, Ruud Gullit and Jamie Redknapp trying to make excuses for Chelsea…priceless.!!!!Well done RVP an the Gooners!!

I would agree about Bendtner. He is not ready for a regular starting line-up place but certainly a useful substitute and temporary starter.

Made the mistake this morning of listening to an hour of TalkShite radio on how Honest JT didnt deserve a booking – “his heels were still on the ground even if his studs came first”, “he didnt touch the man”! (was I watching a different match?)….
Song was an enigma – i have a picture in my mind of him drifting along a yard or so behind the attacker on each Chelsea move – but then Gilberto often gave that impression too and one missed his covering and tackles on first viewing.
Tremendous performance by Little Willy and Big Johan in the second half when they consistently took the ball off the Chelsea attack at the crucial moment.
…and this vanP guy, is he the one the great Myles Palmer wants to sell?!!! He is the unpredictable genius in the team – everyone needs one – he even has an Invisibility Cloak for crucial offside situations

Ateeb – i can tell you’re a big fan of Ade but i wouldn’t say he was ‘complete’… for a start, his finishing isn’t great – his positional play is questionable, especially in the box – i lost count of the amount of times Arsenal pressed into the final third and had to hold the ball up because there was no presence in the Chelsea box.

YW good summary
I would differ on the 442 system as I think we won despite playing the 442 as Chelsea dominated the midfiled until the 60th minute or there about. I thot our midfield was over powered and over ran at times.
But Ade has a habit of playing either left or right and not staying in his position upfront as an outlet for our passes when we play the 451. If makes his diagonal rums better and stay discipline up front may the 451 would work better for us.
RvP was superb and combined well with Ade last night to score so in that sense the 442 worked. But if Chelski had more creative players than just Deco we would have been in greater problems as the dominated the midfield.
Ade leads the line better than anyone else in the Arsenal shirt at this juncture( once he learns to beat the offside trap he would be lethal). NB and Rvp are different type of players so should not be compared. Both are very useful using different tactics so I think comparison doe snot do each justice.

Thanks for the report & hope you are feeling better, YW.
I cannot agree with you on the confidence issue, I think it was paramount.
For an hour we gave an edgy performance, epitomised by Clichy’s nervousness. We were doing ok, considering we were playing 1 of the real top sides, but were still drifting to defeat, as we did at Man City last week.
All of a sudden we get a goal out of nothing. No dispute that it was offside but bloody hell how many times have we been crucially on the wrong end of these decisions?
We got our bit of luck & it transformed everything. We started winning the 50/50s , Gail did things instinctively to become superman again. A complete switch & if Almunia had thrown that some ball to Nasri, he would have beaten his man to set up the counter attack.
RVP mentioned “confidence”, lack of it makes the best players look poor & the worst sometimes good.
Special mention for Gallas & Djourou, who were both outstanding.
Anyone catch the motd comment that “never had a goal been scored so much against the run of play” ? Really?

First of all, congratulations to the lads on a thoroughly deserved win.
I am very happy that both wenger and the players are making the right noises in the press this time around.
Having been one Gallas’ biggest critics (and I still am), I have to say, he played very well and deserves all the credit he gets, for this match atleast.
It seems the lesser he opens his mouth the better he becomes as a player and yes, the manager was right this time around in his praise of gallas. Try to keep it going billy!
Johan djouru has come back from the dead. After being almost “killed” by (ex man united 4th choice) silvestre, he put in a brilliant performance.
I, for one exempt him from any blame for the goal, this, for a change, was not due to ineptness, but just one of the things that happen in football. He has a good shout to be first choice IMO.
We crowded the midfield very well in the game. The importance of Alex song cannot be underestimated. I have said it here again and again that he is the only player we have that is a NATURAL for the DM role.
Denilson, though he put in a lot of effort, will never be that player. I believe that the only reason he is first choice is because he is one of wenger’s favourites.
But he did help song to JUST ABOUT keep lampard and co. at bay. Song HAS to be first choice to partner cesc in the 4-4-2, no question.
Well nothing to say about the forwards we were always equiped enough from the beginning of the season there, so I guess they did their job.
About chelsea, Terry should be thankful that eboue wasnt right back for this match or else he would have been off if he had made THAT challenge on eboue. He is lucky sagna is such an honest player.
The “29th greatest arsenal player of all time” couldnt provide the aeriel dimension to chelsea that drogba gives them, and our defence smothered him very well. Good to see that after the way he was spouting rubbish about us gooners, before the match.
All in all the team especially the defence did very well, but lets not get carried away. Taking nothing away from the team, I cant help but think that the result would have been much different had Drogba, essien and joe cole not been out for chelsea.
We have to focus and beat mighty wigan and get some consistency going before we go to villa park in a month’s time.
And who is shitting about bentner here? I, for one rate him higher than ade, he is an incredibly important member of this team without doubt. He will come into his own in disjointed games where creativity is choked. Just be a bit patient! And yes, Nikki, keep the pink boots!
Fine post Yogi,
though I have to say, when you remarked about “Denilson’s normally assured touch”, I burst out in laughter, but I took it as a case of you indulging in some supreme IRONY! That was a good one.
Anyway, it was a great game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the kids tomorrow…
Cheers all!!

Good team selection was key to victory.
Song in DM instead of Denilson and Djourou at CB instead of (Sylvestre=Kolo ,mines(-) pace);as (Djourou= Kolo, plus(+) height).
Song should be trusted in DM position after this game; his confidence will get him better, as we really need a stronger player beside Cesc; Denilson has eyes for a decisive pass; he should keep playing as wide man, just like Eboue untill he grows some muscle.
Well done Arsenal, and to RVP in particular, as I have been critical to your performance recently. Thank you for making me eat my words.

I don’t think YW can be using irony, when referring to Denilson’s 1st touch. His control is superb.
He didn’t appear to have much of a game but their left flank was kept quiet.
PSB
The answer is to keep this team together & with the right motivation, the consistency will grow with it.
What has been proved is that they have the quality.
“the result would have been much different had Drogba, essien and joe cole not been out for chelsea”
Well maybe it would also have been different with Walcott, Rosicky, Eduardo etc playing for us as well. I would also be surprised if Ade was fully fit too.

Many are too harsh on Denilson. In central mid field of a 442 or 451 he has been superb this season, and the stats fully back that up.
Premiership: All Midfielders: Denilson 3rd in Total Passes, 2nd in Pass accuracy (86%), Successful Tackles 45 (7th) with a tackle success rate of 75%, Attempts Created 21 (21st), Shots on Target 10 (13th), Assists 4 (4th), Goals 2 (12th), Fouls won 25 (9th) (Note that Ronaldo has won 29 fouls (7th).
Tackling is particularly noteworthy, no other midfielder in the top 4 comes close (none in the top 20). All the others in the top 10 tacklers are from the low end of the table. In all these categories he is performing better than Obi Mikel, Alonso, Mascherano and Gareth Barry.
In the Champions League his form is even more impressive: Midfielders: Total Passes (4th), Pass accuracy (3rd), Successful tackles 17 (3rd) with success rate of 85%, Fouls won 13 (10th). Remember these are the top 32 teams in Europe.
So how does he compare to Flamini? Well in the passing he is similar in pass accuracy (both 86%) but puts in more effort around the pitch. Average passes per game in the Premiership over last year for Flamini was 57, Denilson is averaging 71 even though he is sometimes played on the left or right of midfield. And the key figure as far as I am concerned? Flamini was not even in the top 10 of tacklers last year.
In AW’s words Denilson is a “very efficient player”, he once described him as a cross between Gilberto and Rosicky. He is a classical box to box player with a fantastic engine. He is very comfortable on the ball, controls things well in an often congested mid field and almost always lays on the right pass. His tackling and covering is under-rated but when you look at the stats notice that no one is near to his work rate. Even playing mostly on the right wing last night he put in 4 successful tackles, only Clichy of all on the pitch did more (6). It is also noticeable that he knows how to “take” a foul. He is the most fouled Arsenal player, often in important places of the pitch (fouled 25 times compared to Ronaldo of 29 times this year). He was right to go down in the box last night under Cole’s foul – but made the mistake of delaying his fall!
Wenger took a good long look at Denilson in the last few games of last season, and in the pre-season, and I think concluded that there was no one of interest that would outshine him in this team and with its tactics. I agree with him. And the guy (who has been Brazil captain for every age team from 14 to 19) is 20 years old. There are many reasons for the inconsistency in the team this year, but Denilson is not one of them.

Glad you have put the facts so eloquently.
People expect Ronaldiniho or Gattuso or something.
This is his first full season as a first team player in a major league, for crying out loud.

RvP was the same RvP that showed up in every other game this season, eratic, undpredictable, dangerous but the only difference this time is he managed to hit the back of the net.

Denilson has been excellent this year, the only thing which he doesnt have to his game is a decent shot from distance, seen him quite a few times hit some very tame efforts. Overall though he fully merits his place in the team wherever Wenger has to play him.
He is our most consistent performer by far this season.

However, we did look lightweight in midfield despite a good performance from those playing. Can’t fault them at all. As i said in an earlier post we outfought and outthought them for most of the match.
So assuming it is just a development thing and time will make them the finished article(Song, Denilson and a few others), how do we compete consistently in the meantime?
I am assuming that we just do not write off the next couple of years.

Johan Djourou: I’m a bit surprised at how much he has impressed me this season. I certainly didn’t expect it. Still think he’s looked the most solid of our CBs and most impressive yesterday was, as YW said, that he didn’t let the o.g. get to him. I didn’t see Willy give him a blast for it either which was a good sign.
Let’s hope he’s given a good run as first choice now (better late than never, AW!) so we can get some confidence back in the defence. I think a lot will hinge on that.
Having Kolo and Silvestre as back-ups is fine. Also agree with someone earlier who said he thought Kolo could do a good job at DM if necessary, but I think only as sub for Song and/or Denilson. Who knows, AW’s stubborn persistence may begin to pay off.

Denilson is not a winger but played decntly. Playing on the wings he showed signs that it will improve his development i.e. passing in tight spaces, tracking back, shielding the ball etc.
Clichy played well in the second half but in the first half was non-existent because of Kalou and Bosingwa’s threat. For some reason many people say he had a blinder which I don’t get.
Kalou penning Clichy inside by making diagonal runs from the touchline in to support Anelka. This frees up space for Bosingwa to run into while the Chelsea midfielders profit from gaps left behind. Also Nasri and Denilson contributed to this defficiency by playing too narrow allow the space on the flank.
Adebayor worked hard but looked slightly off the pace due to his lack of fitness but showed his presence is still a danger. RVP’s work is underrated and often lacks support or better runners when he drops into the hole. When we defend he drops deeper which is another plus to his game to stop Mikel.
Song didn’t have a good game in the first; better in the second.

jbh: Stats only tell half the story. Arsenal were more balanced last season and positionally better. This is not Deni’s fault solely, Fabregas in my opinion is playing slightly higher up and doing less dictating as he did last season.
Also Arsenal had a huge amounts of possession last year and although this is still the case this season we are creating less chances and the ball is just being passed around with a lack of penetration.
Against United and Liverpool last season we dominated but our final ball was poor, this season we have countered them better.
Maybe we are putting more tackles due to our lack of pentration in possession. This certainly seems the case to me as I’ve seen many times we are giving chances on the counter and they’ve had to intercept.

Thank you jbh!
I am confused by some of the comments – rather sickening, as if we did not win. I didnt see the match but saw the result and it was Chelsea 1 Arsenal 2 – THANK GOD!!!
Naga – did you see the CL match – how Denislon controlled the ball with such grace. your comments about him being one of Wengers favorites is so unfair! He is played because he is an excellent player with a world of skill.
And who cares about who was our for Chelsea – they are a billionaire squad and have adequate players to replace. What about our injuries? How comes you dont say – we would have most probabaly won all our games if not for injuries?
Lets stop finding fault we our team and just get behind them. This team w/o any additions can win any competition. Lets keep getting healthy and see what happens.
I hope we do play with more consistency. Funny I went Miami over the weekend and met a couple of Man City fans and they seemed to think Gallas wasnt a good captian either, I am saying that to say I think what was happening behind closed doors was affecting the team on the field more that we think. Cesc being the captian is great and a stroke of Genius by Wenger – he never made cesc the captian when Gallas was injured so it really doesnt seem a logical more to give it to him. Gallas can just focus on the defense and I trust that the team as a whole will be more consistent.
Great!!
God Bless!!!

Brain – stats are facts, no?
It tells that Denilson is taking stick he does not deserve. He has been one of our more reliable players thus far and yet we think that Yogi’s compliment was a twisted joke. How can that be?
Song is a wonderful player!
By: Paul N on December 1, 2008

The Denilson defenders should note that no one is actually slagging Denilson. He is, at the moment, a poor man’s Fabregas, which is a great thing to have unless you have, as we do, the REAL Fabregas. He does not have the instincts to close down or stop the second or third run into the box. This has been exposed multiple times this year, both in chances and goals.
I like Denilson best in a five man midfield. In a 442, I prefer him on the wing. I vastly prefer Song as the defensive CM. What I would really like to see is both Toure and Gallas back on form, so we could try what I think would be the best choice of all available: Djourou.

Big Johan you need to go to the link below, then follow through on the various Player stats links. Takes a bit of work, and make sure you select by Group (eg Midfielders) and League (Premiership or Ch League).
There is also a good feature allowing you to compare players in individual games. For example Denilson vs Carrick and Denilson vs Anderson in the MU game this year was very interesting and shows why I think Denilson should be in the Brazil team ahead of Anderson, although Anderson is often liked for his more attacking instincts. You also have to consider time on the pitch to be fair to all players concerned, this is why I tend to look at the overall year to date stats mostly. There is a lot of good stuff there.
One other interesting stat is the Telegraph Fantasy league ratings (same pages). While the Telegraph is no friend to Arsenal, and these ratings are more for the “wow” factor. Denilson is still rated 6th amongst all Prem midfielders (behind Lampard, Ronaldo, Ireland, Geovanni, and Arteta) so again rated the best defensive/all field midfielder. Although clearly Ireland is having a great season.
Agree stats don’t show everything. But in this case a lot of the “we must buy a proper DM in Jan” covered incessantly in many blogs is misplaced. I don’t think Denilson is a winger, he is best in central midfield in a 442 or 451 (with a Song/Obi Mikel type the most defensive in the 451). I don’t think the Flamini loss was as great as many are thinking.

Paul N: Stats are facts but they are limited. Tackles doesn’t tell u the nature of the tackle, where on the pitch, how it came to be.
The best DM’s are adept positionally and hence they don’t always have to be tacklers. I will take Flamini over Mikel or Yaya because of this fact.
I like this saying: ‘Football is a complex game made of simple things.’ Hence those stats are simple things made complicated.
The best thing is to watch the match and then back up with stats. I’m not slating him look at my comment at 2:49 pm.

Yogi- I salute you sir, even in poor health you are your usual sane, even-tempered unbiased self which is more than can be said for the usual pack of jokers making up the Arsenal blogsphere. They seem to think making headlines on Newsnow give them credibility. Our fighting performance has once again underlined the fact that we have the required quality to win the League but we lack consistency and experience. Of course our biggest fear now is a drop-off vs Wigan which is not unlikely given past performances; yet they will be playing almost the same team our Carling Cup kids trash so resoundingly. However the usual jokers can only see beyond their noses in their demand to spend on a central defender and defensive midfielder. The same jokers recently resumed their trashing of Song and Denilson. i commend JBH for his excellent hashing of Denilson’s stats. I hope he does similar work on Song. One more thing, when the legend Eboue returns, we will have a big athletic presence on the right side of midfield that will scare the be-jesus out of most teams. Who needs any more signings?
By: shotta-gunna on December 1, 2008

I think the point is to give Denilson the credit that is due him, not necessarily to put down Flam or even to say he is better.
Brain, the defensive stats may not be as straight forward but the passing ones are. Their is no doubt that Denilson can pass better that Flam and has way better ball control so does Song.
They are good enough, simple as that.

Wenger comment:
A defeat at Chelsea would have left Arsenal 13 points adrift of their London rivals, a gap that Wenger described as “too much”. Whatever the result, Adebayor would not have given up hope.
Ade’s response:
“If we had lost we would have never said the title race was over for us,” he said. “We had to keep on going until the end of the season. We know we have a great team and a great squad and we are ready for it.
Thats the kind of talk I love from the players even if it means disagreeung with the boss

The boys done a fantastic job last night, I think I would go as far as to say that I am happier with the performance of this result than the Manchester United victory. Although the United game was more pleasing to the eye and it was a far better game but the way the side defended made me proud.
For the first time in a long time they looked like a unit out there. Song played his part in that. It will be interesting to see who Wenger goes with (Song or Denilson) when everyone is fit.
Special praise from myself to Johan Djourou, who I have been praying for some time would get his chance to shine in the center of our defence. Djourou done especially well in the air. Ok, they had no Drogba but they crossed the ball into our box on many occasions and he dealt with everything. There was no justice in him getting dropped for Toure for and after Fulham so lets hope he can improve and keep his place in the side for a long time.
Fingers crossed that Cesc as captain will produce a different mentality against the so called smaller sides. I am still keeping my faith after I admittedly wavered after the Villa result (performance)

that is impressive list of facts. I agree Deni has been much better than people think. And I ALSO agree that he is not an outright defensive mid.
But you also have to look at the people around him – everyone says it is flamin’s loss that hurts us, but I ascribe Fabregas and denilson’s troubles to the loss of Hleb and Rosicky.
However much Hleb got slagged for not scoring (some justified), he and rosicky provided an outlet for the ball. And they NEVER lost it. This allowed Arsenal to ALWAYS retain the ball. Hence the central midfielders were rarely nder pressure and flamini had the “simpler” task of just mopping up behind Cesc.
Walcott and Nasri are not that sort of player…especially Walcott – He may be explosive but he is lite as a feather – Balls to him often get lost and the ball comes back quickly. Nasri is much better at retaining the ball than Walcott, but he is not nearly as good as Hleb yet…not many people are to be fair.
When the ball is retained it not only allows your team to get set it forces the opponents to fall back, so when they DO get the ball back they have no numbers upfield for the ball to go to….

BTW, as to Song,
I thought he was AWFUL in the first half – slow and tentative and lost. But quite good in the second half when Chelsea began looking ragged.
He confuses me. He SHOULD be strong. He looks like at any moment he MIGHT start sprinting. But you often think he is playing in a straight jacket that says “do NOT let your heart rate get above 110″

Shotta, its difficult to do a full analysis on Song as he has not played that many full games and he also plays central defense (different role and stats). But his comparison with Obi Mikel in the Chelsea game showed a few things and they were playing a similar role.
Mikel 2 tackles (1 successful), 1 clearances, 4 contests for the ball won, passes 48 and 45 accurate.
Song 4 tackles (1 successful), 6 clearances, 0 contest won, 35 passes, 28 successful.
So it is difficult to conclude from that. 6 clearances is v good going, but most would expect a better result with the tackles.
For Song we need to analyse over the longer term and in relation to the role he plays.
My own feeling is that he has v good potential in that DM role 451. Wenger likes his composure on the ball and excellent range of passes. But he has also commented on his stamina (lacking) and he is not best suited to the 442 DM role which was Flamini and is now usually Denilson (although DM is a relative term as that central midfielder is expected to do a lot upfield as well).

jbh,

Surely Song and JD are now too senior for the Carling team – a dilemma for Arsene, does he stick with them – or ruin the average age by bringing in Sylvestre/Toure (is he still injured?) – or go to the next level with Bartley and Hoyte at CB?!
By: Big Johan on December 1, 2008

jbh – Thanks a million. Your analysis is spot on – there have been insufficient games to form a reliable statistical assessment of Song. Hence I depend on what I see in the games he has played to form my judgement of the player (as distinct from the hogwash in the media and most bloggers). He is a typical Arsenal-Arsene Wnger type player; technically good, with a wide range of passing (which by thew way makes him a superior player to Gilberto who annoyed me with his 5-10 yard square passes) who simply needs to find his place in the Arsenal set up. This season he’s been used as a utility player; occasional defender and defensive midfielder. The latter is where he belongs and he needs a good run of games to raise his confidence and consistency. In this position, I think he needs to have a higher work-rate and to use his evident athleticism to impose himself physically on his opponents. Unlike Gilberto, he is young enough (22-24) to become a much better player than he currently is. Once agai, I don’t think we need to sign an overpriced, over-rated defensive mid-fielder when we already have Song. (BTW: I didn’t mind the one or two occasions yesterday when he put his foot in the ball and hoofed it away when he was under defensive pressure. Much better than trying those tricky 50:50 passes in the last 3rd that put your back 4 and goalie under unnecessary pressure.)

I actually have to say that apart from the thug-iness of Terry and a little bit of frustration fouls after they went behind. Credit to the Chel$ks, they tried to play good football, but you know this is futile against Arsenal.
In the past and under Mouninho, they won against us because they played with the Bolton or Sam Alardayce mentality or Drogba’s ram your head against the break wall you’ll get through mentality.
===
All the credit for RVP for smashing the ball in the back of the net, that’s what you do first then worry about the offside.
The title mathematically is not over, the thing is…do we have the desire to play like this in every game or not? That remains to be seen.

All pessimists and optimists alike I see are slowly galvanising themselves around the boys, and not a moment too sooner I might add! Of course the Chelski result is nothing until we can win on the trot like we know we can, but I hope anyone going to an Arsenal game soon will get behind them like the twelfth man on the pitch should.
It was horrible seeing Cesc shake his head at the crowd after they groaned at a misguided pass he played against Villa. This result is a necessary baby step towards a long term goal we all agree on, so well done to those who were at the Bridge last night, we heard you loud and clear! “It was horrible seeing Cesc shake his head at the crowd after they groaned at a misguided pass he played against Villa.”
This is so unbelievably sad anderslimpar! Belief is so important, I really wish more supporters would have some. Did you see Cesc’s interview on ATVO after the Chelsea game? He comments on the fact that at times the manager was the only one who believed in the team. Perhaps the next time anyone criticises the players for playing for Arsene, they should remember that.
If we really want to see the best of these players we really need to make them feel loved. Hleb and Flamini never played at their best until they were 3 and 4 seasons (respectively) into their Arsenal careers. Yet people expect Nasri, Denilson and Song to do so in their first seasons as regular starters?
By: Passenal on December 1, 2008

Agree with Frank here – these players are up for the fight. The way they celebrated and especially how RVP expressed himself made that seem quite evident to me at least.
The team has had to deal with many things – change in style of play and whatever has been going on behind. Now I believe we will start to go after this thing as If our life depended on it.
I really give credit to Arsenal fans, for Gallas to have not been booed is a small miracle. I wanted him to leave but seeing how things have transpired has changed my mind, may he stay and play with all class as we know he can!

I just hope we win next week. We can really build on this performance. When we beat Manu I was hoping we’d make a good run, which didn’t happen. But this time a good run will be more frutious. With Eduardo returning in 2 weeks, and hopefully Rosicky by january/febuary, things certainly look bright. Moreover we haven’t yet seen Vela given a good run of games. Maybe he could be introduced as Eduardo was last year. Diaby and RVP have never looked healthier before. Adebayor has to a certain extent proved that he isn’t a one season wonder. His assists and goals speak for him. Too many positives for me, to continue hoping for the title.

I agree about Gallas Paul N. Maybe the loss of the captaincy has liberated him and he can just focus on his own game.

If we have a fit Rosicky and Eduardo, than to be honest I don’t think we need to bring in new players. With Diaby, Theo, Nasri, and Eboue for the flanks. But just to be on the same side, I would want to see one player added in the mould of Nasri/Hleb/Rosicky. Defensive midfielders, I don’t want any additions. Defense, we can judge this month. Strikers? We can loan out some the way I see it.

“If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
Arsenal have plenty of supporters who are hungry for glory, but how many have that “faith as a grain of mustard seed?”

G4E, it has to be his time, no?
Djourou has deserved a chance like this for a while and I’m so happy he has grabbed it with both hands. Excellent player.
I can get with that Ateeb. I think Djouou’s coming of age makes the whole defensive situation a bit different that what most feared.

I think Wenger may realized that Djourou has a much better chance than Senderos, maybe this is why he let Senderos go on loan or may even let him leave.
Yet some of us still doubt Wenger’s ability to know who will cut it, who will not. Amazing.
I think Djourou is the future with Toure.

What a strange league this season. All the teams are dropping points.
Seems the great Gerrard fell in the penalty area in the last minute of injury time but the ref ignored it.

Steve, apparently Liverpool were boo’d off the pitch having just earned a point to go top of the league – and we think Arsenal fans are bad!

Even though JD’s time at Birmingham was short and he came back injured, it was a baptism of fire and we are reaping the benefit now.
@Steve
“What a strange league this season. All the teams are dropping points.”
You said it!
Re I think fear is at the heart of doom and gloom. (Though some fans are just glory hunters, and a few just hate Arsene Wenger more than they love Arsenal and want to see him fail at any cost.)
But mostly, the doom-and-gloomers’ relationship with Arsenal is like that of a guy who won’t/can’t commit to his new partner because his old girlfriend cheated on him and left him, and he’s scared the new one will do the same.
Many of the doom and gloomers are scared to hope because they fear disappointment, and they think that by investing less emotion now they will save themselves pain later on if we don’t win. Doesn’t work, IMO – it will hurt just as much, so you might as well enjoy the good times, I say. One match at a time. Besides, as has been said, the team NEEDS the love to perform at its best, especially when times are bad.

Good point FunGunner – a relationship has to be a two-way thing. You get out of it what you put in it! It must be hard constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop! If the D&G crowd could get past their fear and take a leap of faith – the rewards would be fantastic!

By: Paul N on December 1, 2008

Things can change so quickly in football; it can be difficult to stay focussed on the facts and not get influenced by the hacky headlines and mumblings of moronic pundits like Piers Morgan. One negative story and you can turn a blind eye to it. Wall to wall doom and gloom is harder to ignore.
This time last week it felt like we were in meltdown. Awful form, no captain, souring player-fan relationship and the club swamped in acrimony. There was definitely an ominous cloud looming over the emirates – and it had been sneaking up on us for a few weeks.
I admit it affected me.
A smart choice of captain, a couple of promising results, exciting news upstairs, and it feels things are either slowly getting back on track, or – more likely – were never really so disastrous in the first place.
It has been a rollercoaster season so far. There’s no denying it, but I think a few fans may have learned a small lesson in forbearance this last week. And it’s good to see that the other top sides and quite as big and scary as they seemed a month ago.

The time to buy shares, they say, is when evryone one else is selling. Here’s a quote about the NY stock market fall today I just picked up:
“I don’t know of a single investment strategist who thinks that we are at the beginning of a bull market. It looks like it will be a long recession,” said Brian Gendreau, of ING Investment Management in New York.
Looks like a time to start buying folks.
Oh sorry – wrong blog.

This quote by Burnley’s Coyle is memorable for its positivity:
When asked what positives he took from Arsenal’s six-goal mauling of Sheffield United and the three that followed against Wigan in the last round, the best Coyle could come up with was: “Both games were 0-0 before the start.”
Come on Young Gunners!

Steve thanks for the link, this guy grovelled to Wenger but he still insulted Thierry Henry by lumping him as a mercenary defector with Flamini and Hleb at the end of his article. The absolute BS about TH14, and I don’t stand one minute for this sh*t.
I quote from his article
“A real fan wouldn’t panic and would realise that things can’t be that bad if we’ve just beaten Manchester United. A real fan wouldn’t forget that Arsenal have been ravaged by injury (Rosicky, Eduardo, Walcott) and mercenary defections (Henry, Hleb and Flamini).”
I don’t normally post on other blogs or newspapers but I did on this one. I hope you find time to do to.

I thought RvP’s response to questions about him and Gallas was pretty matured and astute:
“Are you suggesting that William was talking about me? I don’t know that, because he never told me anything and I didn’t see my name in the papers, so I never felt that he was speaking about me. For me, there isn’t a problem.”
I see the above as clever because the way to deal with rumours or to kill them is to “neither deny nor confirm”.
Of course the above has undergone distortion by the media as a denial so as to feed further speculation and prolong the news-worthiness of the controversy with “If not RvP, then who?” types of articles.

Agree with Frank about the nature of the people singing the song about Wenger – I imagine it’s the same subject matter as the OT crowd allegedly sing and is connected with a rumour I first heard (from a gloating Spuds fan) soon after Wenger joined the club. Won’t give it the light of day – it’s clearly a pack of lies otherwise the tabloid press would already have had a field day. I’m sure the vast majority at both Stamford Bridge and OT also find it distasteful.
But I am under no illusions about football fans at all clubs – so don’t try telling me that some Arsenal fans couldn’t do this too Frank.
