Theo, RvP and A Bit More

Injury news is always the area that gets keenest attention post the international matches. This time, it was beforehand with Theo Walcott’s shoulder injury. The initial reports in the media appeared to be sensationalist but the club has confirmed that the youngster needs an op and according to Arsene, he will be out for at least three months. It leaves the club somewhat short on the right hand side with Sagna’s absence. Emmanuel Eboue can provide cover for either and his return to action is suggested as this weekend, leaving Kolo Toure as the option to fill in for Sagna. There are, of course, other permutations which allow Arsene to field a 4-4-2 rather than five across the middle, the options for which will become more apparent in the next day or so in the lead up to the visit to Manchester City. The starting line-up in midfield is made somewhat simpler with the absence of Cesc Fabregas through suspension.

Onto cheerier news, lead elbowist Robin van Persie scored twice for the Dutch last night in their 3 – 1 win over Sweden which, if he brings the form to his club performances, almost proves a rest is almost as good as a change. With Walcott and Fabregas being absent, van Persie has more attention for attacking focus placed upon him. It is a role that many, myself included, think he is most suited to, supporting Adebayor, providing an alternative outlet as well as prompting.

Criticism of van Persie for being too individualistic and not a team player misses the point; those are his strengths. It is his unpredictability that makes his role a ‘team role’, preventing attacks from Arsenal becoming too predictable as evidenced against Aston Villa.

Arsene has praised Johan Djourou:

Johan Djourou is not comparable to the player he was six months ago. He has gained in personality, in determination and in quality. I spoke with the Swiss national team coach last week and I was telling him how good he is.  He is pushing all the other players [at Arsenal]. At the back you want players who are strong in the duels and strong in the air. Johan’s size is a big advantage. He is among the top quality.

It is a typical piece of Wenger praise for the player, whom many rated more highly than Philippe Senderos even in the latter’s prime season of 2005/06. The question is when the player will be better than that currently on offer? The form shown by the older players has been patchy and in his mini-run in the side earlier this season, Djourou certainly played well in their absences. The physical qualities mentioned by Wenger are key to the mistakes that have proved costly so far and surely if this continues, Djourou will be given a proper run to prove his worth.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Djourou in for Silvestre.

  2. No wonder we are having uncoordinated discussion just like our lineups. No one is even countenancing fielding Carlos Vela who to my reckoning is more suitable to the role of opening up teams in absence of Fabregas.

We’ve got to learn using our human resources properly. We lost Hleb who was good at prising open teams with his ball control and runs. In his absence and that oFab we should give Vela a look in and he will deliver. He holds the ball well and can beat defenders with his skills and dummy runs from which Adebayor and Van Persie can profit.

Just move Nassri to the left and or have him interchanging with Vela on the flanks which will confuse defenders especially Dunn and Michah who will have attention paid to Adebayor.

  3. Goonerbeall

I doubt that Vela will feature. IIRC he does not return from international duty until tomorrow and Wenger said earlier this week that Vela would be too knackered. Well, he put it more eloquently than that but that’s the gist of it.

    YW

  4. Typical Wenger – He’ll praise Djourou but won’t play him. Same with Wilshire and Ramsey. Play them. Honestly, what have we got to lose now the title’s gone after 12 games?

  5. These players should be given a chance:
Wilshere, Ramsey, Djourou, Fabianski and Vela.
    How they should be used;

    1. Fabianski.

    Kolo- Djourou- Gallas-Silvestre(drop Clichy).

    Eboue-Denilson.

    Ramsey-RVP- Nasri.

    Ade.
    ………………………………………………………

    2. Almunia.

    Eboue- Gallas- Djourou-Clichy.

    Kolo- Song.

    Wilshere- Diaby- Vela.

    ADE.

    4-2-3-1.

    ………………………………………………….

    3. Almunia.

    Kolo- Djourou-Gallas- Clichy.

    Wilshere- Eboue-Ramsey-Nasri.

    RVP.

    Ade.

    4-4-1-1.

    ……………………………………………..
There are solutions with a good mixture; but AW needs a revolutionary move with himself; because I find his current team selection causing more problems than it may solve.
For example, I have found that we are missing badly Hleb and Rosicky ball tracking abilities in the current squad, mostly in midfied.
Denilson, Fabregas and Nasri should not play at time in one game, because none of these three players is fast enough or physical nature to offset the type of challenge we had recently against A. Villa.
For example, instead of having the above; we could have Denilson, Eboue and Diaby or Fabregas, Song and Eboue or Denilson, Eboue and Ramsey. This could help Fabregas and Denilson to have a break.
Eboue offers physical presence as well as ball back tracking option in midfield that Denilson and Fabregas are lackking at the moment; While song offers Gilberto’s calmness and physical presence.

  6. Did anyone else think that the England players on view last night were overpraised for a decent performance against a poor German side?

You would have thought that Agbonlahor, Downing and Carrick were worldbeaters to hear the pundits go on.

If Gallas had made the hash of clearing the ball for a soft goal we would never have heard the last of it. But no, it was all the poor keepers’ fault. not the sainted terry.

Made me appreciate our players I must say

  7. Paddy;

Agree with you that title is gone..but we cant take things too easy we have to hold on to 4th position…

what we can do is not rush eduardo and rosicky..we can keep them for next season…and rotate sufficiently in epl to still win matches and keep players fresh…and play best team in CL and FA cup..

Wenger has got lot of time to decide which ones are going to help him win epl next year

  8. Drop Clichy – you’re having a laugh. He is the best LB in the league. Yes- he has scored an own goal last week but he is human just like Terry’s hesitation last night. Anyone who says drop Clichy hasnt been watching him.

  9. btw england are down 3-0 to india in cricket..what r they going to go down 7-0 in the series..

  10. adc – agree with you and Paddy on the title, but not playing best team in PL risks missing 4th spot, and that would be a real disaster for the club (financially and through loss of players)

  11. Tomsk,

Well i wrote what u wrote right after i made the comment..yes 4th spot is must..

    Alex,

I think clichy has few blunders to his name now..i wont be so sure of him..best left back..again i dont think he is as good in defence as in attack..and the prime role of his is defence…

  12. RVP was awesome last night and will show his worth after an inconsistent start to the season. Clichy must play; he’s a top left back and who do u drop him for?

Vela was sent off last night. If u want to find out more click on my name.

  13. Vela’s dismissal is a plus point as it seems to be for violent conduct which ought to be a three match ban so no internationals for him for a few months.

    YW

  14. Clichy is the best left back in the Prem league. he really has toughed up this year. Its a pity our midfield are not as tough.

I though Eboue had a good little run in CM at the beginning of the season. he would make a good foil to Ramsey, who is a bit more creative. Cesc needs a rest.

Jack Wilshire should be given a few run outs – he certainly didn’t look out of place against Wigan.

Vela won’t be playing and can be anonymous at times anyway.

    Would like to see:

    Almunia

    Kolo Djourou Gallas Clichy

    Wilshire Eboue Ramsey Diaby Nasri

    Adebeyor

Would’ve had denilson, but he needs a rest and i think Eboue can provide a bit of toughness in the centre.

Can’t imagine Wenger would pay Wilshire before RVP.

  15. I think RVP is a top player and will be a force if he stays injury free. He is always dangerous but needs to be more effective up front and creating chances.
    Almunia
Toure – Gallas – Silvestre- Clichy
    Nasri – Diaby – Denilson – Nasri
    Adebayor- Van Persie
I’m not too sure if Ramsey will play but that’s close to what I think Wenger will put out. Depends if Eboue is fit or whether Song can play DM and Denilson CM, Diaby on the left.

  16. This is posted on Goodplaya as somethimg Gallas has said about one of our players –

One incident this season greatly upset the France defender.

“When, as captain, some players come up to you and talk to you about a player … complaining about him … and then during the match you speak to this player and the player in question insults us,” Gallas said. “There comes a time where we can no longer comprehend how this can happen.”

Gallas would not reveal the player’s name, although he said the incident occurred during an attacking phase of play.

“I am trying to defend myself a bit without giving names. Otherwise I’m taking it all (the blame). It’s very frustrating,” he said. “I’m 31, the player is six years younger than me.”

Why is our CAPTAIN such a dick

  17. Now Frank. You said this: “I don’t want us to be top of the fair play league anymore….about the middle of the bottom half will do just fine.” and I fully agree.

  18. More fouls means more steel / titanium.

  19. GALLAS COMMENTS INBELIEVABLE

we are not brave enough in battle,” Gallas said. “I think we need to be soldiers. We have to be warriors. There are teams who can do it well against us, and we have to be able to face up to these attacks.

“We have to understand that to be champions, you have to play big matches every weekend and fight,” Gallas said. “We are coming up against teams who are not scared to play football against us, who are not scared to take us on at our place, and this is becoming dangerous for Arsenal.”

Gallas insists he is not to blame for the failings at the club, adding that he has been forced to break up a number of fights and disagreements, including one that took place at half-time during the 4-4 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

“There are things that can’t be said and can’t be tolerated,” he said. “When, as captain, some players come up to you and talk to you about a player … complaining about him … and then during the match you speak to this player and the player in question insults us,” Gallas said. “There comes a time where we can no longer comprehend how this can happen.”

“I am trying to defend myself a bit without giving names. Otherwise I’m taking all the blame. It’s very frustrating,” he said. “I’m 31, the player is six years younger than me.”

“There was a problem at half-time at Tottenham. The only thing that I could say at half-time was ‘Guys, we resolve these problems after the match, not at half-time.’”

  20. Firstly why do the more pessimistic bloggers post their comments early on? And slowly give way to the more optimistic ones as the day wears on.

Secondly, ,Yogi,I agree on your analysis of RVP. He is IMO, the biggest match winner of our team. He has the skills, and abilities to change the match on his own. And if he get a consistent run in the team, I have no doubts that he will find that form. His link up play is admirable, but it’s his ability to take on defenders and shoot from weird angles that excites me most.

Thirdly, people calling for the younger member of our squads to be given a chance, forget that the proper way to introduce them on a big stage, is either in carling cup, or through substitutions late on when you’re in a winning position. Don’t forget we had Adebayor and RVP out for the past 2 weeks, that made our squad look strecthed. But when they return, there are players that will be adjusted accordingly. Hence, instead of Wilshere, one might see Nasri move to the left and Diaby to the right. There is Song as well, who if played in the middle, might allow denilson or Diaby to be adjusted elsewhere. Likewise Bendtner is ahead of Vela in the picking order, for obvious reasons. His link up play is exceptional. Upfront alone, he hasn’t shown much, probably because of his age. But to me his strengths lie as the second striker.

Fourthly, the only young player that could get a game this weekend is Ramsey. But judging from some comments he looked quite tired.

  21. Theres a disease in our dressing room, its our captain and needs to be cut out. The players are completely divided and it shows on the pitch

  22. Hmm…..ok…let me do fifthly.

Filfthly, 31-6=25. So the mystery player that messed up with Gallas is 25 years old. I think he is lieng. I don’t think we have anyone more than 22.

  23. I love the comment from The Brain, no we have 2 Nasri’s ;-)

  24. I thought we were just doing the titanium suits. Where has this idea of cloning our players come from?

  25. One phamtom Nasri.

  26. Now, let’s beat the other Manchester team this Saturday.

  27. Maybe the team is divided, I hope not!

Yeh Ateeb, it seems as the negative folks get up early to post because they know they will be outnumbered later on.

How can we say we are out of the title race? its only in football were the Champion is set from the beginning of the season! can we wait for the games to be played and stop cursing our own team? thanks for all the faith. Funny but I bet these same people still think Man U could win it.

Some one said Vela dissapears in games, I think a part of the problem is sending him on with a few minutes to go to try to save the day. If he has the skill to open defenses at the end of a match why not give him a chance with a little longer time.

RVP is a great player, just hoping we will see it for the rest of the seaon.

Time to start Djourou but at this point Gallas is the weakest link and not silvetre. You see Gallas canot say we need to fight every week (if the story is true) and then allow himself to get pushd off the ball but a young man that seems smaller than him! where is the example to follow? as far as letting in goals he has been the biggest culprit.

I feel the team needs a change, for a man to say its frustrating in the media is way out, how will the team feel about him. A captian may not be as important but a bad one can be destructive, I think!

    I hope its not true!

    God Bless!!!

  28. Well there is only one player who is 25 in our team…and there is only one player who is capable of telling the Captain that he is not pulling his weight…and there is only one Captain not pulling his weight and there is only one Captain who if he said what he said has just proved once and for all that he is not Captain material…and there is only one Captian who is now fearful that he is about to be ousted…..ousted by a player who has exactly the right attitude….by the way the 25 year old was not playing against Veeelllaa and was so f***ing angry against Stoke (angry not petulant) that he got sent off… btw sounds like Carlos Vela has a similar attitude to this ‘player’ who the soon-to-be ex Captain won’t name….However maybe WG did not say any of this and it has all been made up….love it…

Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa alll….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…Arsenal….ARSENAL

  29. Frank, I think he is talking abt the tottenham game. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it was RVP. U Go RVP! Glad to see some emotions running through our players, lately they look as good as dead.

  30. …actually there are 3 players but it does not work as well………..

  31. RvP…Ateeb…surely not

  32. But if the player who WG is talking about is who I think that is, then I saw that player coming into the tunnel before other non-sent-off players were ready to go out to the pitch for the manu game giving a pat on the back to clichy and sagna and shaking hand with WG. Something smells fishy………..

  33. Frank, Eboue’s 25 and so is adebayor. Eboue wasn’t playing that leaves Ade. Ade has had a habbit of bust ups, but it seems RVP might be the one. Anyways it doesn’t matter who it was. What matters is that our capi came out in public with a thing, that should have been handled behind close doors. And that’s totally unprofessional.

  34. Oh this is fantastic….how did you get to see this TC…? How did you see into the tunnel…were you on the east side and can see stright down it with binoculars…..were you on the west side and using one of those bendy periscope thingys…..were you in the tunnel…are you in fact one of the players, referees, opposition, hangers on etc? Tell us more..

Ateeb…binoculars and bendy periscope thingys make a note…reckon we can sell em?

  35. Sagna’s 25.

  36. Hi Ateeb…Ade is 24….the 3 players are Bacary Sagna, Eboue and Robin van Persie…all three on the pitch for the Spuds game

  37. Maybe Gallas is weak at maths. Or he just went like, “that players is six year younger than me. Or so it seems. Wait, lemme count. Yeah I think he is 6 years younger. I’ll check and let you know the next time you interview me. Wait, do you know how old is ______? Ooops”

Frank, it’s already getting messy at the stall. Too many things, we might need to open up a proper shop.

  38. Messy?..I thought you were going to clean the whistles?….I would like to be a fly on the wall when the team next meet up…not sure WG is going to be able to maintain his credibility now…who is he supposed to have said all this to…anyone know?

  39. Hey Frank,

I watched the match on TV, and they showed when the players waiting in the tunnel!

By the way, WG’s comments seemed to have been taken out of context (I hope); he was giving interview to French media and some guy asked him about the division between young and old within the french national team. So he said blarblar and said some incident at Arsenal, trying to making a point that it happens in every club.
But anyway, it’s sooooo stupid of WG. And mind you, WG is not known as a man of intelligence….Sigh

  40. Look, TC, we all want to be indignant about Gallas, and we won’t thank you if you take away the cause of our indignation.

  41. PaulN agree WG should look in the mirror and see one of the main culprits, hes a big mouth who shouldnt talk to the media, Hes not a cpatain and no loger a great defender give JD a chance, AW dont spout al the words , take action before DJ is completely rusty.

  42. TC whatever he said he shouldnt have mentioned the Tottenham incident.

  43. Whatever was said and by whom, it hardly paints a picture of unity in the squad.

Maybe this can go some way to explaining our inconsistency this season.

  44. Hey guys,
do you think I’m trying to defend WG here?!!
Oh No, I’m pissed as well with him!

  45. .

  46. I am not pissed it is too early…I am however pissed off…….I think that WG needs a rest..about time he was rotated…wrap some string around him and pull very hard…that should rotate him all right…oh yes….I was thinking a rest of about six years……

  47. …. ../–. ….- .

  48. It’d be nice if our beloved Captain Gallas could do a Captain Oates on us.

  49. peep peep peep peep peep peep pheeeep pheeep peep peep peep peep peep pheeep peep

  50. Is that Morse code Frank?

  51. Yep…it means Hi G4E

the second message is the same played on one of my whistles…very difficult to control…but I have been practicing and I think I have cracked it….so to speak

  52. Kolo maybe? My patience with capi is wearing thin. Shut up u bastard and get on with it! A real captain would have sorted out any discontent nice and proper. Not running crying to the press, u fugging big baby. If a young player eg fab4 or sideshow acts bigheaded etc, let them fugging know about it. Kick their arses if u have to, fugging twit capi! Sort it out ! Maybe wenger should call up stefan kuntz out of retirement cos the one we have now is clueless as fugg.

  53. Ateeb, I was thinking that we could provide a small booklet of tablature for the whistles in morse…of some of Arsenal’s most popular songs….for the real enthusiast, you understand…sort of trainspotter whistler………..oh actually we could send just the booklet to the train drivers who drive past the stadium on match days….f***ing away fans won’t know what has hit em….

  54. Its not just about the captain. Its too easy to just blame Gallas for all this. Each player has to take individual responsibilty for their actions. Maybe immaturity is showing here.

  55. Nope..it is about the captain….nobody else spoke to the press…he will be off soon and we will get back to winning ways with JD replacing him

  56. Frank, the train idea is absolutely brilliant.

AIc, If the interview is authentic, than the most responsibility falls on the most mature player. And judging from his age and experience, Gallas should be professional enough not to come out in public with such remarks.

  57. Its obviously not only Gallas’ fault but he must put fires out and not add fuel to them. He needs to be an example of what he saying needs to be done (if this story is true). He is the one playing soft so why is he talking about what needs to be done, DO IT!
I dont know but I think this could be a big part of the problem – though I hope noT.

  58. I’m so pissed off with that mug.

Why mention the fricken TOTTENHAM game. Is he taking the piss? there gonna fricken love this aint they. What a wanker. Whats the point of what he’s said? Aint he got any mates to tell?

    Prick

  59. Ateeb is right isn’t he AIC…..blarting to the press is hardly mature….or loyal….how the hell is he going to look any player in the face now……..Gael, Gael…GAEL I said cover me…Gael cover me I said…………….why what you gonna do if I don’t Willie….tell the press….kiss my arse I’m not covering you……bit like that

  60. …oh and probably in French

  61. I dont think that statement can be true, its ridiculous that he’d say that at this time

  62. I agree that going to the press was hardly mature but I was talking about the supposed rifts in the team. Unity does not come from one man but the team as a whole. Its not just Gallas’ fault that these divsions exist, assuming that what he said was true.

  63. AIC,

There like a bunch of spoilt kids running riot, Wenger needs to gain control of them. Theres no one like Adams or Viera to help him. No one with a presence that the younger ones will be scared of. An alpha male type

  64. When, as captain, some players come up to you and talk to you about a player … complaining about him … and then during the match you speak to this player and the player in question insults us,” Gallas said

fair enough mayb Gallas should not have said anything , but i think the prob is that there is a player in the squad that the rest of the team were not happy with .. thus Gallas went to speak to him on the pitch because other players had come to Gallas to complain abt this specific player.

so who is the player everyone is not happy with?? ade, rvp??

  65. This is what you get with young players. I’m not talking on the pitch about experience; the infighting is getting stupid. It takes me back to what Senderos said when he left to Milan on loan; “From the first moment it was clear to me Milan are really a top-class club, more than Arsenal.”

Arsenal must be like a youth club in contrast!

Kolo Toure is out so Djourou or Song at right back or maybe Gallas.

  66. Frank, I have the option to purchase 2 barrels of “Turkish Arse Whistle Cleaning Solvent” (cleans 2000 whistles or 1 tuba per barrel).

It can also be used to pickle French Captains that are unable to find their brains before speaking.

    Are you interested?

  67. I don’t think it’s all Gallas’ fault, he was made Captain and he accepted the offer. The problem is he’s in a tough position now because he will not step down on his own admitting he’s a bad Captain, and Arsene will not take it away from him.

The idea that Unity doesn’t come from one man is true, but one man can bring a few others with him and that will divide the unit.

I don’t want the sentiment to be that he’s a horrible person or player…he’s just not a good Captain and he probably tried his best at it.

The time for change is not in the middle of the season, but I think at the end of it is a very reasonable thing to do.

    G4E

  68. I don’t think it was Ade vs RVP as they danced when the Dutch man scored but it could be either one of them against someone else.

  69. tee,

It might be Gallas and his ‘Friend’ who are the odd ones out.

I dont respect Gallas from what I’ve seen, the mans a moron who thinks he’s clever

  70. Arsenal.com have had several hours to deny it if it’s not true. Reading the words, it is how he speaks. Just please Wenger don’t try to put a spin on this. The Captain needs a lesson, Pat Rice needs to explain how an Arsenal Captain behaves and if necessary get Keown in to help.

  71. Gunner4ever,

Come on, the players hated him at chelsea and now its happening here. Everyone cant be wrong

  72. Brain,

Please remind me of the ‘Too cocky before we get Guzumped death dance’

  73. It is probably unrealistic to expect complete harmony in any dressing room. There are bound to be conflicts of some kind.

However you do not expect your captain to advertise them to the whole world even if it was used as an explanation for whatever may be happening with the French team.

He is now making himself appear to be inadequate for the job of captain of AFC but as with most things we are not privy to what is really going on, so none of us can make a proper judgement.

  74. ‘We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers. We have to be warriors’

This is the man who got treated like a bitch by Agbonlahor

  75. Arse21: I took it upon my liberty to look for the dance even though u were probably joking but I couldn’t find it.
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=K4VXDh0uuj0

  76. Brain

    Did senderos say that?

wow so many of our players bitch abt us..may be we shud as club do the reverse..do so bitching abt senderos..reyes..etc etc

  77. Our team needs a good slap in the face.

How can Gallas attempt to pin all the blame on his team-mates when he is the captain? He has a duty to unify them, therefore he must take ultimate responsibility. He should be trying to sort this crap out like a grown man, not wallowing in it. He’s gone running to the press with his tail in between in legs to grass on the team because he can’t handle the pressure and responsibility. How exactly is that going to help the situation? Who even goes about their business like this? Obviously we don’t know all the details so we can’t judge properly, but it just all seems so childish and unprofessional to me.

I hope Wenger is firing up a truckload of hairdryers.

  78. we as fans dont really get to know footballers personally but we sure as hell know what sort of man that gallas is!

He is obviously playing a starring role in the disfunction of our club!!

  79. If Senderos said that he would be two faced, because he said Arsenal was class on thier own as well.

I think it may be just a compliment he had to say as now while playing for AC Milan on loan.

I don’t think Senderos will bitch about Arsenal knowing that he’s still an Arsenal player.

  80. Wenger might not be as self-righteous as the people here.

  81. “A captian may not be as important but a bad one can be destructive, I think!”

Good point and sadly I have to agree. If the comments attributed to WG are true, I feel really let down by him. He is not representing our club in the best light by airing our dirty linen in public. It’s not like the media need much of an excuse to lay into us with the “Arsenal in crisis” headlines!

  82. What Senderos meant I think was the way the players train, atmosphere was more professional. I mean you don’t get more professional than Maldini, Pirlo, Gatusso, Ambrosini etc. But if you think about it the difference at Milan and Arsenal would be much different as you have more experienced and wise men there that demand higher respect.

  83. Flint, How are you?….excellent 2 barrels will be fine as a starter but as we hire out the whistles…we need to keep the cleaning fluid on hand…Ateeb is working like a trojan as we speak just using his elbow and a bit of spit…..do trojans work hard?…any pictures I have seen they seem to wander around in short skirts and knee length boots ( note that for the catalogue, Ateeb)….Ateeb reckons we should have a shop…maybe…anyway any chance of a discount for bulk and of course cash…VAT blah blah..

  84. Instead of putting out our dirty laundry for every one to see, I think he should have came out and said “I took the blame for everything” like a real man or Captain. Or like Wenger who always defends his players even when they play like sh*t.

Instead he’s coming out to defend himself….So much for a “Uniter” not a “Divider”.

I feel the wind of “Change” is coming……

We want change…..We want change…..We want change……Where is the whistle man? :)

  85. Well thats Senderos bolt shot….and I can’t see any way back for WG…cardinal sin talking to the press. I don’t think there is disharmaony in the dressing room….I think that WG’s words were the parting words of a player and captain who is losing it……if any of it is true it is probably not RvP….he is probably the most loyal player the club has….as I keep saying…make him captain.

  86. Pheeeep…Oh f*** it came out….bl**dy hell, G4E you caught me out there…..we want change …we want change….pheeep pheeep pheeep…..pheeep pheep pheeep

  87. We can sell gallas..cant caryy two oldies at back silvestre being another..we might get some bucks after selling him and get a good defender to replace and get practice before next season..

but where r good defenders? guys have any suggestions?

  88. there behind you adc…altogether now….THERE BEHIND YOU ADC

  89. What I don’t like about the Gallas outburst is that it absolves him of any blame and smacks of him just covering his own considerably sized arse.

Having said that this is a collective problem but Gallas’ actions have not helped. This is why you need a number of “captains”. Wenger’s great teams consisted of the likes of Adams, Vieira, Gilberto, Campbell, Keown, Parlour who all had leadership abilities.

  90. Thanks for the whistle support Frank….You’re a whistling STAR.

  91. I think it is unfair to blame everything on Billy Whizz but he has certainly let us own badly when we needed him and whats the point saying we should fight like soliers when he has been culpable when crucial goals were conced. He is just like Arsenal at the moment. Full of promise but inconsistent. He is the same man who scores crucial goals in games we think we hve lost . U always worry which Gallas wil turn up today.

I agree with you Paulie the title isnt lost until the last day of the season.

We all seem to have consigned Kolo to the scrap heap but for me this guy on his day is awesome. His powers of recovery are second only to clichy. He is our most mobile centre back ..super fast. And you bet he would not have been outrun by Agbonlahore.

Lastly unlike last year we are spoilt for choice in terms of personal to cover positons. Conversely last season we played virtually the same team to death and ran out of steam at the end. but less tinkering produced better results.

  92. re frank,
gael gael couvre moi j`ai dit couvre moi,qu`est ce que tu vas faire si je ne te couvre pas,je vais le dire a la presse

  93. Frank

i think you might be right about van persie being capatain!! just goes to show though, there isnt many good candidates for captain in this squad!

  94. Muppet for Captain?

  95. Wow…thanks, a-g…what about the ‘kiss my derriere’ bit?….

  96. Almunia is the best candidate for captain at the moment but is he a guaranteed starter a years time? Plus it would be better for an outfield player. I would then say Clichy but he’s still young. We had a future captain in Flamini but he left and I don’t wanna talk further into him.

adc: Djourou looks a fine centre back as he has mobility, pace, tackling, heading and awareness and can get better. Needs to know when to pass but looks a great player.

  97. Staring us in the face wasn’t it, G4E

  98. If Almunias our best choice for captain then were in trouble.

I jst read somewhere else that RVP left the Villa game at half time, Leave the kettle on did he?

  99. I have to agree with Blackstock (at 6:19 pm) and Frank on this one. There are no two ****in ways about this one. I don’t know why the whole unity thing and rift in the dressing room is being brought up, to defend Gallas or whatever the situation maybe. The point is you don’t come out in public with such things. He’s the oldest of the lot for **** sakes, if he’s going to create such a tantrum than you can imagine how the rest of them could be feeling right now.

Even if he was stabbed at the back with a knife, he ought to keep it to himself or go tell his mommy(at most). Work it out in the dressing room. I don’t care who that player was, what he did. Sure he was asked by other players to sort him out, and if he did. Than there is no point saying it loud in public. Is he expecting a pat on the back or sympathies?

It’s the same as not ***** ur best friends girlfriend (unless really really hot:). There are absolutely no two ways about it.

  100. Where is the somewhere that you read this, ARse21…toilet wall on Seven Sisters Road?

  101. Mixed site, Ateeb…mixed site!…it can be remedied by adding ‘or boyfriend’

  102. Frank,

On goodplayas, posted by someone called Big Willy Gallas

  103. Oh London toilet walls, always full of good material to read in your spare time

  104. ….and write..whoops

  105. Frank, I know about the mixed site. But it’s ok to **** your best friends boyfriend you know. One can always get lucky with that one.

  106. ….just saying that vulgarity is sometimes acceptable if it is balanced..is all

  107. Frank, I think you need to add pens to your stall inventory…just in case!

  108. ….also why use **** instead of kiss…which I presume you meant …bit old fashioned but quite quaint really…well done…

  109. Just in case someone needs to reply to Big willy Gallas on that toilet wall, I mean Goodplaya.

  110. …female swans, G4E?…stuffed ones I presume…live ones are going to be difficult…owned by the queeeeen (thats the noise she makes when you squeeze her) you know..which is a strange coincidence because she is an Arsenal fan isn’t she?….

  111. I thought kiss would be moderated. Offcourse I mean that. Old fashioned I am. I am going to try some other words now, and see if they get moderated.

  112. …oh pens…thank goodness….I was not looking forward to walking down Holloway Rd with two dozens swans before a match

  113. …been brought up proper in the oldfashioned way…I knew that, Ateeb…I could tell..thats why I was happy for you to help out on the stall….very refreshin….warms the cockles it does…

  114. Hahha….no Frank, let’s leave the Swans alone….and let’s not mention the Queen or Howard will appear from nowhere

  115. I wonder what would happen if we had a full embargo on players talking to the media?

I can’t see what benefit Arsenal derives from the media, in any case.

Every little comment or statement is put under the microscope. It is then often twisted or transmogrified by a sort of chinese whisper process, until we start disliking our own players and over-analysing every word they say, regardless of the context.

  116. If this story is true this is the best time to make a change, bad attitudes can spread like cancer!

G4E, I dont think Gallas was outpaced Saturday but Outmuscled, that was a shame! I do agree that when Toure is on form, I see no better defender. maybe being overlooked as captian has dented his confidence.

Man I just really hope this story is not true, if it is, it is time for Gallas to hand in the armband! better to have no captian at all than one who cannot take responsibilty and looks to pass blame. Quite shameful!

Looking forward to Man City. How do you think the team will look without Walcott, Cesc, Sagna, Eboue? as far as line up.

  117. I would like to see:

    …………………….Fabianski…………………….

    Eboue…….Toure……..Djourou…..Silvestre

    ……….Denilson………………Ramsey………..
    ……………………….Diaby……………………….

    …….Van Persie………………..Vela…………..
    ………………………..Ade…………………………

  118. I miss Tony Adams.

I’d love for big old Tony to come back as some kind of defensive coach and give our players a motivational kick up the arse. And about 600 kicks for Gallas especially. He can teach them how to attack and header the ball from the back while he’s at it too.

I just have this optimistic and superstitious belief that if Tony is employed in any way at Arsenal, even if it means dressing him up in the Gunnersaurus suit and parading him around the ground at half time, then it will in some way have a positive impact on the club just because it’s Tony Adams.

  119. Jav – line up looks good but no Nasri?

  120. That’s if Eboue is fit. If not then I’d like to see a backline of:

    Toure………Gallas…………Silvestre……….Clichy

The only reason I removed Clichy originally was because I thought that he could do with a rest to stay fresh and focused.

I too think that Toure form is because of Wengers decision to award the armband to the idiot that is Gallas. I think that deep-down Toure hates Gallas as much as the rest of us and can’t wait until he fucks off. I would also say that when Toure is on form, there is no-one better than him and the captaincy is surely gonna be his in the near future.

Also who gives a fuck about Cesc’s suspension. He has been nothing but shit all season and I think that Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey are better all round than him. Cesc is a little pansy who can’t hack it in the EPL.

  121. Blackstock, I agree. The teams needs some type of inspiration that they are obviously not getting from any other player.

How Gallas behaved last season has affected him and he doesnt seem to be able to command the respect from his team mates. They just dont rate him so much to me. I do think Wenger made a mistake in making him captian, especially when he had candidates within the team who were great servants. Why Gallas, who had played for only a year?

  122. I have my reservations about Nasri because he has started quite a few games and looks to be running out of steam but I reckon that he could do a job where I’ve placed Diaby or even Vela because he has a good shot on him. But I reckon for this coming game Nasri would probably be best coming off the bench.

  123. Makes sense, no Clichy?

  124. Gallas and Adebayor are the problem makers in this team.

Gallas because he does nothing but complain about his teammates which doesn’t inspire confidence. It is also unprofessional for a footballer to publicly slate his team mate regardless of who it it let alone our club captain.

Adebayor because he is deluded into thinking that he is better than all his team mates and for having the gall to compare himself to Henry. He is not fit to lick the shit off Henry’s boots and I can see the frustration in players like Walcott, Nasri and Fabreags when Ade fucks up another golden goal-scoring opportunity.

  125. I miss senderos!!!

  126. I just reckon that Clichy could do with a mini-break. The guy tireless runs up and down the length of the pitch and has recently comminted a few errors of which may see him lose some confidence.

Also what we lose with the pace and attacking threat of Clichy we gain with the solidity and aerial ability of Silvestre defensively and after leaking so many aerial goals, I just think its imperative to shore up our shore especially with Sagna out and Eboue barely able to make it back from injury.

  127. I hope we sell Gallas and Senderos and bring in another centre like Christian Zapata to compete with Kolo, Silvestre and Song for centre back position.

I would also like to see Ade sold. With the money from his sale we can surely afford to but a better striker and a tall, pacy midfielder like Yaya Toure. I still have hopes on bringing in Yaya to the emrites because he seems to be disliking playing second fiddle with Keita at Barcelona and playing with his brother may bring our the best in Kolo.

I also reckon a move must be made for Amir Zaki. This guy is top quality. How did he slip through the radar of Arsenal fabled scouting network? Anyways, my money is on Zaki to score 20+ goals this season and if he can do that at Wigan then only the lord knows what kind of a beast he’ll manifest into at our club where we are hardely bereft of scoring chances yet our most profiligate striker manages 30 goals.

  128. Jav: Vela will not play because of his travel and Ramsey will not play due to playing for Wales on wednesday.

  129. Kolo is out Jav – so team needs a re-think. Probably Silvestre back to the middle and Clichy used as expected.

I live in Australia and on coverage over here before a game was interesting to hear Mark Bosnich mention that whenever Silvestre was at full-back in front of him, he reckoned he was never comfortable. And he had the same thing confirmed by other keepers… so maybe Silvestre should only be used as cover for Clichy?

Bring on Eastlands and 4-1 or so (to us!!) to bring some confidence back – would like to see rVP or Ade go nuts…

  130. Poliziano, where are thou? We’ve got Zapatta suggestion as a defender. I’m putting him down in the list with Hypia, and Maldini. We need depth.

Everyone, please type in capital letters the names of players you would want to see brought in the january transfer window. It’s easier for us to skim through comments and complete the list. With Poliziano, I’m working on the list. And we would be greatful for your feedback and suggestions. And don’t be shy with your suggestions no matter how ridiculous the player you want might sound. We shall finalize the list as soon as possible.

Any suggestions for a captain? We might need a new one. I’ve been asking Wenger to buy a captain since 2 weeks now, and he didn’t listen. And now its come back to bite him on the beep. I was thinking of Appiah, he’s free these days, and is captain of some African country, the name evades me at the moment. But for january we can get which ever captain we all agree upon.

  131. Forget Hyypia, Ateeb – he’s big but I could beat him to a loose ball – and I’m slower than Willaim Gallas.

  132. My suggestions:

    GK: Spiderman
    CB: The Incredible Hulk

    DM:I Iron Man

    Striker : The Terminator

    Skipper : Captain Marvel

  133. Right Winger: Forrest Gump

  134. Muppet i’ve been informed it’s a mixed site. So please make alteration to your squad, and add a couple of superheroes(females)/superfemales. Or whatever they are called.

How about catwoman playing along side the Iron Man. She will have some great movement. And know exactly when to pounce.

  135. Muppet, Incredible Hulk is prone to red cards and not a reliable CB.
I feel Terminator is more suited to DM than Ironman, or maybe even CB given his defensive tendencies – he came out to the press and said “I’ll be back” so made his intentions clear.

Spiderman at keeper however is a stroke of genius.

  136. Ok.

    Catwoman is good.

    Full Back : Wonder Woman

Assistant Captain: Counsellor Troy. (To keep the peace).

  137. G4E, that might now work. Our style of play requires intelligent players. However since we might be altering our style of play, maybe we could fit in forest gump somwhere. Maybe he could deputise for everyone on the pitch. Hard working lad he is, could be the closest thing to Flamini we might get.

  138. The head of Monkey Town was quoted saying:

    Monkey Press Office

  139. Just read Gallas’s comments. Shocking! Does this guy think berating teammates is going to help our current situation? Get a grip William, we need leadership now.

  140. The head of Monkey Town was quoted saying:

“I would like to see some crazy humans shut up about selling one of our best strikers that we miss so much right now”

    Monkey Press Office (MPO)

  141. Sorry, Ateeb. I’ve been scared off by the storm over Gallas.

Yes, don’t be shy with your suggestions. Nobody could be more ridiculous than our current set of losers.

Yaya Toure has also been suggested for midfield. Since we’re about to give his brother the boot, though, he might be reluctant to join.

Amr Zaki? Well, what do people think? The new look Arsenal will be a democracy, not a totalitarian dictatorship as it is at the moment.

Everyone on this site knows I’m Wenger’s biggest supporter, but I think he’s taken this great club that we all love as far as he can. How about Maradona as the next Arsenal manager – someone who knows how to combine the beautiful game with the ugly.

  142. Ateeb,

I trust your judgment on how to utilize Forrest Gump and don’t forget he is also fast….beside he can carry Gallas and run if he needs to catch up with Agebanlahore or whatever his name is.

  143. And Terminator would be more suited as CB. I have doubts over his pace. Flash could work there, but I am not very fond of him. I think we should wait for titanium Theo’s return, and then judge how he would perform. WIth his pace, and added physicality he could tear down defences.

And let’s also give optimus prime some thought over the captain’s role. He could really lead by example. Unlike someone we know at the moment.

And we need Professor Xavier as the manager. To control the minds of the fans, to make them stop booing and cheer instead. That would be incredible. And make ronaldo perform his diving antics, without any player in touching distance of him.

  144. G4E, I’m just concerned if forrest gump would know when to stop. That is my only concern, we would be laughed upon, if he continues to keep running when the ball is out, or we score or concede a goal. But heck, atleast someone will be showing desire and energy, that we so lack at the moment. I think he should start every match. Maybe that would wake Cesc up (provided we keep cesc, decision pending).

Good to see you back Poliziano. Good spot with that amir zaki, I completely missed that one. People please CAPITAL LETTERS. Your cooperation will be highly appreciated.

  145. Is Primus good enough for Arsenal?

  146. I suggest Dr. Jekell And Mr. Hyde that way we would have an extra man on the field.

  147. But would Jekyll and Hyde give us the consistency we’re looking for?

  148. We couldn’t play Forrest Gump and Agbonlahor together. They’re too similar.

  149. One name we all have missed is Roy, he used to play for the Rovers. He could win a game on his own.

  150. That’s a negative on Jekyll and hyde. We can’t be inconsistent after january. No time.

Prime would never come out in public and make comments about other team mates. And he’s solid as a rock.

Forest gump, doesn’t have the personalit. But a good heart. We’ll have to make a tough decision on this one.

  151. I hear ya Ateeb he doesn’t know when to stop, I know you will do what’s best for the club (wink Wink)

Good one Steve, but Jekyll & Hyde can scare the bias referees, we would benefit from that.

  152. we should sign

    CURTIS DAVIES.
    GARATH BARRY.
    YAYA TOURE.

  153. RORY DELAP
    KEVIN DAVIES
Use these 2 pieces of shit for league games only. NEVER IN THE CL PLEASE.—-TITLE SORTED

  154. Read on Soccernet that Gallas said one player who is 6 years younger than him is unsettling everyone in the team with his disruptive behaviour. Who do you guys think he may be?

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=594433&sec=england&cc=4716

  155. Flippancy creeping in.

  156. I was shouted down in the summer when i said it was weak management by Wenger by appointing Gallas as captain again.I hope the people who shouted me down are happy now

    It was WEAK management

  157. But what’s your overview of Wenger as a whole Budgie? Is he a good manager?

  158. Trouble is, Peter…it is a weak comment…it just reads as an uninformed whinge.

  159. Where were you shouted down, PSB? Not here, surely. I’ve never heard any shouting on this blog. In fact, I’ve never heard anything on this blog.

  160. YW,

Regarding Djourou, I pray you’re right. I’ve been calling for this for a while and can’t really understand why a Djourou/Gallas partnership has not been given an extended run to date.

    Here’s hoping

  161. Wenger is a good manager but not a manager who is going to win us trophies this season .I am only being honest. The appointment of Gallas as captain was always going to end in tears.
Will Wenger take away the captaincy from Gallas now? of course not

  162. make that djourou/kolo dgob… the hell with gallas…

  163. Alex Ice Cream,

Couldn’t agree more: Gallas is given too much blame for team problems. Is he any weaker as a captain that, say, TH14? No, but the team made Thierry’s limits in the role unimportant.

I also think that WG is a far better defender than he is often given credit for being. The problem in our team is that he often has to do two roles as man-marker and last ditch interceptor (for which he is very well equiped) AND as first ball winner (for which he is sadly ill-equiped). He’s at his best, as with his partnership with John Terry, when he has that big first ball winner at his side. If you look at all the matches in which he has excelled, it is when he can focus on the above tasks with his ability to read the game well. This is why I think that he and Djourou could make a phenomenal partnership.

Captain Marvel: NO, but Our Captain and deserving of more support maybe!

  164. Actually, Dgob…I think that last ditch interceptor is the worst part of WGs game…his pace is getting slightly doubtful, he can be pushed off the ball and he tends to back off…he also has a disturbing habit of giving hospital passes to his colleagues when he is in trouble….

  165. Same here Frank.. Kolo is much better at this..

  166. Frank,

I hold Kolo dear to my heart and have done so for a good while. However, since his return from the ACN he has remained prone to error and injury. I’m not saying that it will be a permanent thing but it is a current one. Gallas was fabulous again ManUre and I think that that level of performance supported by Djourou (who is better in the air and better at ball distribution on both feet than any of our other CD’s) could be just what the doctor ordered.

  167. Out of Gallas, Song, Djourou, Toure and Silvestre, on current form Kolo Toure is our worst defender. But it also has to be argued that when on form Kolo is by far our best defender. Also, on current form, Djourou is our best defender as he has kept a clean sheet whenever he has played this season.

I think Kolo’s form is as much to do with not playing as it is to do with the niggling injuries he keeps picking up. I am quite impressed with Silvestre’s no nonsense defending which resembles Senderos but with more pace and power. Gallas is not suitable for our club and proving to be disruptive and unprofessional. We need to get rid of as soon as and bring in one of:

    1.) Cristián Zapata (22yrs; 6′2″)
    2.) Christoph Metzelder (28yrs; 6′4″)
    3.) Vincent Kompany (22yrs; 6′4″)

My ideal choice would of been Kompany but as he has signed a 4 year deal at Man City, effectively we cannot pursue for a least another 2 years. I am pissed off that Wenger allowed Kompany to join them for what is a paltry fee of £6 million as he fills all the pre-requisites for a Wenger type defender, ie.., tall, young and atheletic. But I hope that Wenger pursues him at some point in the future before his price tag soars.

I would still like to see Zapata pursued by Wenger as a long term solution for the club but for a shorter term solution and as a leading influence I see Metzelder as the ideal choice now and I reckon we could do some sort of swap deal with Real Madrid for him in exchange for Gallas.

But having said that I have high hopes of Senderos returning a better player next year as a result of his loan spell at AC Milan. It is true what Wenger says in that there are very few top class defenders of a young age. CB seems to be a position of responsibility and maturity most suited to players in their mid 20’s onwards as they will have inevitably made mistakes in their early careers from which they will have learned and developed from. Even Rio Ferdinand in his early days used to be error prone. But what I see as the most important atrributes in Senderos that are benficial for Arsenal is his leadership qualities and his ability to lead the line something that none of our other defenders (apart from Silvestre) seem to possess.

I still propose that next season we start to pursue a 4-3-3 model when we are playing at home or against opposition who want to play football as we have the players who are capable of doing that because next season I believe that a lot of these young players will come back much stronger.

However, one thing that is clearly missing in our personnel is a tough tackling, highly energetic and powerful defensive midfielder of which we have none of. I am still of the belief that Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey are more central box-to-box midfielders with great attacking abilities but maybe not tough enough as a defensive shield for our back four. I am also of the belief that the 3 afore-mentioned players will develop into more complete midfielders than Cesc. Maybe one day Cesc will become one of the best central midfielders along the lines of Xavi and Iniesta but right now his game is all about passing and vision and when that is off his contribution to the team is minimal to the point that having him on the pitch is quite detrimental because he continually loses the ball. I came across a post on another website by a gooner who stated that he thinks Cesc has been found out in this league. Where last season he had the support of Hleb who was also able to unlock defences (and to a certain extent Rosicky helped also), this season the lack of creativity from the other midfielders has left Cesc exposed and teams have quickly realised that other than his passing he has little to offer and if you stop Cesc you can stop the Arsenal productivity machine. This is why I believe Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey can become greater and more all-round than Cesc and I think he too realises the competition he is facing and is trying to engineer a way out perhaps. I don’t know what is afflicting him game at the mo but if he’s heart isn’t at Arsenal then he must leave. We shouldn’t keep players who aren’t willing to give 100% to the Arsenal cause.

But anyway we are still in need of a pure defensive midfielder for when we play away or against difficult opposition or when we need to close the game off. The only players I know of that are capable and good enough for Arsenal are:

    1.) Yaya Toure (25; 6′3″)
    2.) Lorik Cana (25; 6′1″)
    3.) Mahamadou Diarra (27yrs; 6′ )
    4.) Gokhan Inler (24yrs; 6′)
    5.) Gareth Barry (27yrs; 6′)

I personally favour Yaya Toure and Lorik Cana. I think that Yaya is a signature we can capture considering that he is out of favour at Barcelona and I think that brotherly partnership of both Toure would work wonders at our club and either one could inspire each other to greatness (much like sibling rivalries). I also like the tenacity, energy and leadership of Lorik Cana but I think his signature would be rather more difficult considering he is captain of Olympique de Marseille. Mahamadou Diarra is also a player I rate highly and think he’s well worth pursuing because he’s a seasoned pro and out of favour also at Real Madrid.

I believe that we also need to pursue a top quality centre forward to replace Adebayor who is clearly not good enough for our club and highly doubt whether he can replicate his successes last season where although he did score 30 goals, I felt he should have scored more considering that most his goals were simple tap-ins resulting from the excellent work of our midfield yet he also missed bucket-loads of similarly easy oppotunities. I propose we go all out to capture the signature of Amr Zaki.

I feel we also need a further midfielder as injuries seem to be an inevitable part of our seasons and we always seem to end up with central midfielders like Diaby and Denilson at times playing on the wings . I propose that we also try to capture the signature of Bastian Schweinsteiger who is a tough player with good dribbling skills, powerful shot and can play pretty much anywhere in midfield and in my opinion well worth persuing.

    So there you have it.

    My immediate propositions are:
1.) Swap Gallas for Christoph Metzelder
2.) Purchase a specialised defensive midfielder

Optional considerations and future propositions are:
1.) Consider either purchasing Zapata or bringing back Senderos as competition for CB
2.) Sell Adebayor and bring in Amr Zaki
3.) Consider purchasing another highly capable midfielder like Bastian Schweinsteiger
