Wigan, Arsene and Cesc

Wigan pitch up at The Emirates this evening to play in the Fizzy-Water-Posing-As-Lager Cup and in Arsene’s words, 90% of the team that comprehensively disposed of Sheffield United will play. The other 10% will be interesting to see who does not. In view of current injuries, it is pretty much certain that Bendtner will not even be in the squad and even though Manuel Almunia is expected to be OK for the weekend, it would be little surprise if Lukasz Fabianski does not start. Equally though not an eyebrow would be raised if he did. Unlikely as it may seem, this evening might be a good time to Kolo Toure a chance to regain his form, partnering Djourou in the centre of defence with Song in the midfield. Again, it could be either way, especially as Arsene seems intent on converting Toure to a right back at the moment. Whatever the result is, and a win is always a good confidence booster for the younger players, the performance is more important, a better guide to the progress being made by the group of youngsters.

The squad’s strength came under scrutiny once more following the victory over Manchester United with Arsene claiming that he has yet to decide if he will venture into the January window:

We will make a check at the end of December and we will see. We have had many players out and showed we have a great squad that can win the big games

And I suspect more importantly, a number of games against ‘lesser’ teams to come which will be the crux of the decision. It is all very well winning against rivals with a lot hanging on the result, showing that the pressure can be handled. A team with title pretensions will have to win the others as well. If he does go into the kitty and spend a few quid, a forward is unlikely with Eduardo set to return in the next four weeks although some scepticism needs to be applied to Arsene’s injury updates as they are frequently out by a week or three. I would be surprised if a big signing arrived although he has in the past said that he likes to make these deals in January to give the player time to adapt to the next season.

One ‘big’ name he defended was Cesc Fabregas, about whom Wenger said:

Personally I don’t see any drop in his performance. At the moment that’s
what people say, but I don’t believe so. I believe he is trying even harder but once you
become a leader like him and the team doesn’t win, you are the first in the spotlight. Before, it was Patrick Vieira. When the team didn’t win, it was Vieira… and you forget about Fabregas. Now he has a lot of responsibility and as soon as you don’t win, it’s ‘Oh, it’s Fabregas. He’s not as good as before.’ I don’t think so. He will get a few more [goals], don’t worry. That is as well linked to the success of the team, and to confidence.

Of course that might be different to his actual thoughts and the duo were having a bit of a love-in post-United when Fabregas said:

We definitely did it for the manager because he has believed in us. Apart from Gallas and Silvestre, the rest of the players would have never had the chance to play football so we owe him a lot of things and have to show that on the pitch.

No doubt this is a stick with which Arsene will be beaten at some point – “Oh, he’s bigger than the club, they play for him not for the shirt” – but with that kind of emotional hold over the players, it is easier to motivate them. He would not even have to say about himself, his body language would have given him away, although he claims to not have contemplated defeat against United. Hmmmm. Whatever way this goes, that loyalty will remain in some, become less important to others as their careers progress. It does not mean that as soon as Wenger goes, the players will all disappear to various points in the globe. One or two will, that is only natural. Much in those circumstances depend upon how the board (whomever that may be at the time) handle the succession which seems unlikely to come from within. A while away though and not something to worry about in the immediate future.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. good balanced article as usual, cheers btw im from India

  2. Looks like same team as last time but with Simpson in place of Bendtner:

    Fab
    Hoyte Big J Song Gibbs
    Wilshere Ramsey Randall Merida
    Simpson Vela

Unless Bischoff plays instead of Randall

  3. i would like to see bischoff..

And Djourou to get playing time.

  4. Nasri is another who holds Wenger in high regards if the affectionate goal celebration (2nd goal) is anything to go by.

However, in the final analysis, money talks, and the big players will have to be getting their just market-based rewards, perhaps less a Wenger-loyalty discount.

On Toure leading the team and the defence tonight, I had the same thought as well. Besides gaining confidence, it is time to test out a younger and perhaps more durable central defence partnership of Djourou-Toure. Even if Gallas-Sylvestre is a potential Championship winning combination (hopefully), we need good cover.

  5. Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all…Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…Arsenal….ARSENAL

    S*** that was dark…where are we….oh…..oh wow…we are here…amazing

  6. Wen ger and Ferguson loves each other

have u guys seen them lately…cannot believe just few years back during pizza gate etc we had so much acrimony…at one point it didnt matter to me that arsenal wins provided manu loses..but now see the turnaround..fergusson on few occasion now has supported wenger…

god cannot believe i cud see this..may be one jose was responsible for this..i hope inter loses in his leadership..

  7. Poliziano, team spirit…what you doing in there?….you coming out? adc is talking about AW and AF…

Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaa all…..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal…..Arsenal….ARSENAL

  8. I’m not going in there again. It smelled like Rafa Benitez’s trousers.

  9. i dont understand how rafael’s goal is on top 14 goals of the week and nasri’s second is not??

  10. oh. is this the other one frank, u could have just said so!

  11. ur a top bloke frank. The kids to win tonight 2-1. Come on goonerlings !!!

  12. adc

Yes i picked up on their little love affair, i think the battles down the years have lead to alot of repect for each other alongside the rivalry. After all the best games in the Premiership have been Arsenal Man U… FACT

As much as i respect them though, it gives me great satisfaction getting one over them and them having trophyless seasons which i think we should do our best to provide this season. We need to keep this mentality now, and not allow the Chelski’s, Liverpuds, and the Mancs taking our glory. Starts in the Carling Cup tonight, Wenger should play a team that he will be sure to win the game, but also give the reserves and youth a chance to prosper. He normally gets the balance right, but Wigan can be a bit tricky.

    My team for tonight:

    Fabianski
    Hoyte Toure Djourou Gibbs
    Ramsey Song Bischoff Wilshire
    Simpson Vela

  13. The squad for tonight has been posted on the Arsenal website.

  14. Since Toure is not named in the squad (http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/bischoff-included-in-18-man-carling-cup-squad) he won’t be playing. So it will be Djourou and Song at centre-back with Hoyte available to shift in if one of them gets injured. I read somewhere that Randall was a doubt but he’s in the squad. Very much the same team as for the Sheffield game, with Simpson for Bendtner, which is as it should be. They deserve the vote of confidence. Djourou up against Heskey will be a battle. Will be interesting to see if Bischoff gets a run-out – haven’t seen him at all. Would also like the chance of seeing Coquelin again. Have only seen him once and he looked very impressive. All in all, a good test for them – Sheffield was too easy and it will be much closer tonight. Great competition this for giving the youngsters a feel for the real thing and seeing how they handle it – Premiership opposition and hopefully a pretty full house. But as YW says, shame about the beer!

  15. That site Le Grove, changes your posts to say whatever they want you to say. Whats the point in that?

  16. dkgooner

I thought Heskey is out injured?

  17. Heskeys injured……….! No battle, its Amr Zaki/Henri Camara we need to look out for if they play

  18. Le Grove = Le Wankers

  19. One wonders if perhaps they will play one up front, in vela, and an extra midfielder, since we seem to have a large number of them. So either Bischoff or Coquelin added to the team from Sheffield. Something tells me Simpson will not start – not sure why but he is the oldest there and has gotten the least starts – other brighter lights, perhaps, to be developed?

Course Vela is not really a lone striker type, but at 18 you can take a goodly number of these midfielders and push them a little higher I would think. Wilshere for example, as a second striker?

  20. Flint McCullough

You are better of with sensible people, Arse21 !

Where are you speaking from, today?

I am looking forward to tonight, no real pressure, just hope the kids do well for themselves & maybe get a result as well. It won’t be easy for them though.

    Another excellent post, YW.

  21. Zaki and Camara will be a handful. Steve Bruce has improved Wigan.

  22. Have you all noticed that our kids tend to beat teams by more than our…ummm, older kids?

Thing is a team like Wigan comes to the Emirates against our first team shuts up shop and prays. But against our kids they come out to play more, thinking…I could be their father, I’m not going to cower.

but the kids still pass and move like their older brothers.

so it’s the very thought that Zaki and Camara will be a handfull that will lead to Wigan’s downfall. Were Wigan to do what they do best – bunker down – i doubt our kids could break them down.

  23. This Alan Swann of the Evening Telegraph is another lazy journalist who gets headlines at NewsNow. Repeats line for line the usual cliches we hear from the pundits and some posters:

“With Wenger at the helm, we are assured of seeing the prettiest football available south of London Road. With Wenger in charge we are also pretty much guaranteed that Arsenal won’t win anything of any significance.”

“The Frenchman’s ego will stop The Gunners taking the Premier League while United and Chelsea are awash with money and more pragmatic managers.”

“Wenger seems determined to win the Premier League title with talented kids, no decent defenders and a dodgy goalkeeper. All the available evidence evidence suggests otherwise, but Wenger won’t budge which is a pity for those of us who love our title races to be close.”

By pursuing his current policy, Wenger will continue to frustrate Arsenal fans. The brittle nature of his squad means that for every performance like the one we saw against Manchester United, we will see one like we saw at Stoke.”

Can someone hang this on the Bulletin Board at London Colony to inspire the boys for the rest of the season.

  24. Flint McCullough

Yes Shotta, & anything written by that insignificant bollox spewer Piers Morgan, who claims to be an an Arsenal supporter but is anything but.

What gets me is that these pricks get paid.

  25. Even if these pricks are proven right, which is by no means certain, who could we get as manager that would be better than AW?

I would like to see the names.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t always agree with AW and he does make mistakes but he is the best manager we have ever had so why do people want him out.

    I just don’t understand.

Just because you get someone new in for a lot of money does not mean they will be better. Look at Ramos at Sperz.

  26. Wat a load of crap that Piers Morgan comes out with! Win nothing with no significance… haha, who is one of the very few teams to remain in the champions league for the last 13 or 14 years??? who has won 2 Doubles…?? 4 or 5 Fa Cups… runners up in Champs League and Uefa cup.. i dont think he has been watching football for the last decade as well as anyone else who think Arsenal will slip down the league.

We have been very smart compared with the other top teams who have taken 5 years longer than us to see that inflation is getting the better of football. All of the other top 4 are in over their heads and rely on money from elsewhere. We have set us up nicely financially for the next few decades at least, as well as built a foundation within our club which means Arsenal will keep producing talent and breeding new teams to keep us competetive.

So… while the other teams are making big name signings and may have a little bit of glory on the field at present, in the long run we will see who comes out on top. Even this season and last we are seeing our players blossom, and play beautiful football. Age is only a number, at the end of the season alot of people will realise this.

  27. Up again, bright and refreshed ready for the game and then the night shift.

Funny old game this really looking forward to seeing the youngsters play…..Premiership youngest team against Premiership youngest club tonight….and the former is hip and really cool because we are Arsenal and we rule…lalalalaaaaah……lalalaaaaah…lalaaaaah

Arrsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal….Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenaaaa all…..Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsena…..Arsenal……ARSENAL

    Actually going to try something

Arsenal babaies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal baaaaaabiiiees….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies…Arsenal babies…ARSENAL BABIES…..

yep thought so it works if you sing it fast…

  28. Arsenal babaies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal baaaaaabiiiees….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies…Arsenal babies…ARSENAL BABIES…..

    It does work…

  29. You are a star, G4E

  30. So are you Frank, you got me all fired up and ready to go man :)

  31. Their performance against Fulham a week or two back was very encouraging….it is a privilege really isn’t it? Watching these guys play…a real privilege……Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies…..Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbaaaabbiiiieess……Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies….ARSENAL BABIES

  32. I’ve seen the Fulham game, it was good and Bischoff goal was great.

It is wonderful to see these babies play and wonder how good the future will be?

  33. Can you imagine…AW bought Amaury Bischoff for nought…if this guy makes it well…it is just awe-inspiring…and the beauty of it is that he will follow AW and Arsenal to the ends of the earth for saving his career……I am really looking forward to tonight…no pressure just a good performance and some insight into what we can expect over the next couple for years….

Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbbaaaabbbiiiees….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies….ARSENAL BABIES

  34. of years…no maybe for years is better

  35. Wonder of team spirit has got over her claustrophobia yet? …and Poliziano’s got over that smell….’smells like team spirit’? …naaah she is far too fragrant to be confused with Rafa’s pants

  36. We have a great manager, just some people don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it.

Those people who hate Wenger will keep trying to drive him out of the club, and then when they get someone like the Ego-Maniac Mouninho they’ll know they had it pretty good with Wenger.

  37. They won’t get rid of AW, G4E…they misunderstand the strength of support within the club and amongst the supporters for him. The press and media and some bloggers will try to milk any poor results but I feel that their day is over..the tide is changing…if necessary we will hunt the b***ards down.

  38. I appreciate your passion for Arsenal Frank.

    Soooo here we go:

Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbbaaaabbbiiiees….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies….ARSENAL BABIES

  39. agree Frank, There is a true endearment with Genuine Arsenal supporters were Arsene is concerned. Who else has done what he has done with a team and done it so honorable. Not just splashing the cash but still creating something that is a sight for sore eyes – the way that Arsenal plays, NO ONE has done it. I dont know but I doubt that anyone in world football is or can be as proud as an Arsenl fan can be of their team or manager. Its Real Cool to Support Arsenal!

    God Bless!!!

  40. If managers could be transfered in and out, I am sure Wenger would beat the record 52 m signing of Zidane, on any given day. He should sell above 100m . Seriously, that guy can start his own club from scratch. Give him a ground, and a football. In no time he would have erected his own team of unknown players, that would in a few years time would be target of big clubs. It’s ridiculous how people/fans, and media treat him. He is a footballing God. Screw ronaldo, give Wenger the balon-dore( spellings?)

  41. Yes Ateeb, The man is quite simply a genius as far as the game of football is concerned!

  42. Wenger is using “Yes We Can”

    Click my name

  43. Incidentally, Cuatro here in Spain used “Podemos” as the tagline for their Euro 2008 coverage. That translates as, you guessed it, “We can”. It had an irritatingly catchy song to go with it as well: “Sí! ¡PODEMOS!”

    Worked for them.

  44. Actually, I’m sure you didn’t need me to translate that for you!

  45. Doesn’t that mean ‘Yes we have iPods’, Big Al?

  46. haha frnk… u r a 1 man ‘sit down’ comedy… ( i guess u r sitting infront of yr comp.)

  47. that should be haha frank… sorry..

  48. No need to be podantic, Frank.

  49. Excellent, Big Al…….n wrrs, jnnyby.. m nt ttchd t vwls nywy.

  50. u r a quick learner.. :)

  51. Anyway…Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbbaaaaaabbbbies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies….ARSENAL BABIES

  52. anyone know the team?

  53. wah-hey ;)

  54. whistles, didgeree dos, French horns anyone….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbbbaaaabbbiiiiess….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies…ARSENAL BABIES.

  55. Sorry, davisfunfair, couldnt resist.

  56. Flutes, recorders anyone…..goin cheap (pheeeep) bought em off a man in the pub..name of Flint….same as the ones in the shops cept theirs came in the front door and these came out the back door….oh dear sorry…I didn’t mean…well you know.

  57. Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal bbaaaabbbbbies….Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies, Arsenal babies….Arsenal babies….ARSENAL BABIES

  58. It’s time for Arsene and Arsenal to cut its losses in Rosicky. He will never be the same again and won’t be success in the brutal EPL. It has been reported that he was off and on the treatment table regularly during his days in Germany. He should be released next summer; total waste of resources.

  59. 1-0 to Arsenal babies at half time. Lovely attacking play by us particularly by the midfield duo of Wilshire & Ramsey. We could have been 3-0. JD is having a good game in defence as well. Surely good experience from the babies.

  60. Howard. And where exactlt did you get your medical degree from?

    **** off.

  61. Siva the babies are really good. If only they would lose the ball less. One of the differences between them and the first team. They lose the ball more often, and at dangerous places. But hey, they’re just babies, they will learn.

  62. Ateeb,

Wilshere is just unbelievable. If there is one player who could just walk into the 1st team now it would be him, surely.

  63. Ramsy, is the truth!

  64. 2-0 actually!

  65. Oh Howard…

  66. Vela is the truth also!

    Update 3-0

  67. We shoulda let these boyz play against Stoke!

  68. I say play this team against the lower level teams and let the first team play the bigger boyz.

    Great Football!!

  69. Geez, I feel lonely on here! where ya’ll at?

  70. Sorry Paul N. Game over now. Back to the blogging.

  71. They’ve done it again

  72. Great stuff huh Muppet? G4E what you think?

  73. What did I just see?!

  74. Awesome Paul, and Vela is another one to add to our collection of fantastic players.

Did the Mancs draw playing have of their first team? :)

  75. Unbelievable – yes Big Al – that was Wigans first team! no?

  76. - have
+ Half of their first team

  77. I jinxed it, they are 1-0 up now …dam* it :)

  78. Fabianski is also the truth!

  79. G4E, Vela is serious, the similarity between he and Eduardo is weird – two of the coolest hombres scoring wise. Amazing!

  80. OH MY GOD!! The future is tooooo bright!!! It’s blindning me….sAve me Lord Wenger!!

  81. Yes Ateeb, that double save!

  82. Poor Arsenal, we don’t have world class players :(

  83. Muppet, Paul:

Vela, Wilshere, Ramsey, and Fabianski can all walk into the first team. Moreover Merida, and Djouro looks to be on their way as well. As for Gibbet, he could be the next Clichy. Not could be, he is the next Clichy. As for Song, he should play the CB position. I really don’t rate him as a holding midfieler.

  84. I agree with you Ateeb, though I think Song has done a good in the mid when not partnered with Denilson – that is just a line up that flaps everytime, at least do far.

  85. “so” far.

  86. Myle’s Model – the 4 flaws

When Myle’s decided to become a journalist he realised that everybody knew the obvious, so he concentrated on gritty negativity. He felt the best way to create an identity that celebrated failure, to get readers interested in his culture, with his beliefs… was to keep views as negative as possible to keep his audience. He felt it would be an interesting experiment… It was a rather fatalistic vision of the world of journalism.

That was what Myles told himself in August.

That’s why he refused to listen to experienced journalists and prefer to listen to their views. Or, at least, that’s what he says. It’s fairly plausible, as always, but far from the whole truth.

It’s true that insight and knowledge are vital components of great writing, and it’s also true that empathy is a good attribute. If you have the insight, the readers will appreciate this. If you have knowledge, and you stumble in your grammar or word selection, you can offer get your message across.

    However:

    1. Myles will never get his message across, because the message is about him, rather than the truth.

    2. Myles never states the full picture or a balanced view of the facts.

    3. Myles doesn’t learn from his readership, who frequently write in to tell him on all guises how much what he says deviates from the reality. However, his posts continue to attempt to bore the readership with hard factual reality that doesn’t come off.

    4. Most journalists conduct proper research than rely on an unknown mate who phones them up at the gym.

That doesn’t spead confidence and turns the readership off.

He think his posts are a fascinating experiment.

Like Wenger, he thinks his youth policy is a fascinating experiment. His attempt to mimic this is to keep sentences short and pithy. Yawn….

    Nov 11, 2008

  87. 2 players that I think are close to the first team are Woocash and Charles Candle.

As I have been saying recently, I think that Fabianski is a more natural keeper than Almunia who still gives the impression of being a work in progress at 31. Fabianski has better instincts in terms of positioning and when to come out to collect the ball. He makes mistakes but these can be ironed out. The double save was amazing.

Vela looks like a natural striker; a born goalscorer. He doesn’t have Ade’s strength but his finishing is better already.

  88. Arsenal in crisis !

  89. That was absolutely thrilling. I couldn’t stop screaming and yelling. The boys are amazing. Paul I aggree, let the reserves take on the teams in the lower tables. It’s not about physicallity, then is it? It’s their energy. Even at 90 minutes they were playing, as if they took steroids during the break. Gibbet couldn’t stop running. I am sure, if he misses the bus, he would run home. SAF would be killing himself for not trying hard enough to buy Ramsey. 5 Years from now, MANU fans would be damning them selves. The similiarites between him and Cesc are uncanny. Wilshere, can’t be 16. He was handling the rough side of the game brilliantly. His movement, and close control, is quite good, in a few years time he could be as good or better than Hleb or Nasri.

That double save from Fabianksi, could well be the save of the season. It was so Peter Cech-esque(in his prime offcourse).

  90. The problem with Myles Palmer is this obligation he’s set himself to write a post every day. When you couple that commitment with a lack of reasoning skills you get a sh*t-paved downward spiral into miserable negativity.

It’s just so much easier to be a cynic these days.

Oh by the way. Let’s congratulate the less fashionable Arsenal players. Djourou, Gavin Hoyte and Song did a great job at the back tonight.

  91. Some interesting comments on the live bbc text thing.

“2107: Must score. Kieran Gibbs is played through by Cesc Fab- wait, hang on, it was Aaron Ramsey, doing a glorious impression of the brilliant Spaniard, but the marauding left-back Gibbs could only shoot straight at Chris Kirkland. They’re like a clone army, this Arsenal team. Sensational”

“Admit it Stevo, even if Arsenal lose tonight, which looks unlikely, the way the kids play is inspirational and only an idiot would doubt what Wenger is doing”

“2121: “Sometimes you just have to stand up, acknowledge the quality and applaud. This group of kids are special. And this from a Liverpool fan.”

  92. And one more thing.

A Cultured Left Foot – What a prescient choice of name for your blog, Yogi. Or just a little bit of history repeating.

  93. Muppet excellent post at 9:47

If only he would just hang himself from the :)

  94. Excellent performance by the babies. Yes Ateeb, they have to learn to retain the ball, which was in the 1st half frustrating me bu hey if it means that our defence is worked more & they end-up keeping a clean sheet I’m happy. JD had a really good game, I can only suspect that AW has used him sparingly because a mistake by a defender is usually costly & AW probably wants to protect JD a little – a lesson learnt from the Big Phil experience maybe?

Vela, Wilshire, Ramsey are definite stars of the future & in a max of couple of years time would have players like Eduardo, Nasri & Cesc worried about their places in the 1st team.

It was nice to see senior players in attendance – the kind of nice feeling it creates all around, which would one of the factors Gilberto referred to when he said Arsenal is a special club where the players are well taken care of, they may not be the highest earners in the business but they sure must feel special within the club.

A win against the Villans over the weekend would complete the turn around totally contrasting the previous 10 days!

  95. That last goal from Vela was extraordinary as he was under pressure by the defender but still finished smooth as silk!

  96. True Siva.

  97. Well said Siva, about the senior squad there in support. I found that particularly pleasing, especially Ade being among them. If only he’d score a few more goals, my heart might soften.
Stunning show I thought all round. They ooze confidence. Gibbs looked a bit shaky defensively early on then settled down. But he’s amazing going forward. Everything else has been said.
Anybody notice Bischoff after he came on? Was watching on a rather iffy stream, but don’t recall hearing him mentioned once.

  98. 5 yrs from now if all these players are still at Arsenal, we would have won the league 3 times in a row with increasing margins despite the riches of Chelsea & ManC. But nothing would have changed with the media crying “Arsenal in crisis” if we went to extra time in some Carling cup match played by a team with an avg age of 16!

  99. I now very much want to see Walcott and Vela on the same pitch. Just terrifying pace for a defence to handle.

  100. nolagunner, did you see the speed of Vela for the assist for the second goal? SWEET!

  101. Paul N, are you related to nolagunner? There’s a clear resemblance.

  102. maybe a long lost brother, I think my father was a player in his youth Poliziano!

  103. I aggree with Poliziano. Nolagunners smile’s better though.

  104. True dat Ateeb!

  105. A younger brother, I should think. Very cheeky to stick one’s tongue out at the camera.

  106. Perhaps the photographer was a united fan.

  107. …or a Wigan fan!

  108. Ateeb, it looks like you have one tooth Bro…no need to brag and show it off? :)

  109. The Spurs fan might have stuck his tongue out at nolagunner.:(

  110. Just back from the game – what a fantastic performance and result!

The AKB’s were out in force singing Arsene’s name to the rafters. Great atmosphere and great day to be a gooner.

  111. When the young guns perform well, it makes the Arsenal squad seem huge.

  112. It is huge Polizaano, I imagine next year some of these players will have to graduate to the first team.

  113. Perhaps Vela will get some playing time against Villa, since van Persie and Adebayor are out.

    Vela vanquishes Villa!

  114. G4E: I think that’s a cigratte. Or I would prefer that image.

Poloiziano, Arsenal squad is huge. All we need now is, a good strong CB who is good in the air. Like dunne. And a defensive midfielder, Yaya Toure. And then a lethal striker, preferably Benzema.
Because we both know good strikers are expensive. Sure Vela might look good, but when he comes accross the PL teams you will see that he will fail. That’s because he wasn’t expensive enough. It’s as simple as that.

  115. G4E: Observing the image a bit more has led me to the conclusion that it’s not a cigratte, but deffinately a joint. You notice the eyes, and the circles around them, you will know what I mean.

  116. The genius of Wenger seems so simple: he can tell a good player from a bad one. Ferguson, Benitez, and the rest, have to rely on reports in the newspapers; but, as Wenger might say, “beaucoup de bruit, peu de fruit.”

  117. hahaha Ateeb, ok I’ll give you that….have a good time :)

Excelent comment and it kind of predicted what would happen 7 hours later.

Also good point by Siva regardin AW, Djourou and Big Phil. It’s a pleasure to read this blog, more of insightful comments about the club than on most other boards, full of “buy this, buy that”, “just not good enough”, and other cliches.

  119. And who are you?:)

  120. Non Edible Nacho, I aggree that was a pretty good analysis of the fortunes of our younger kids. Though no one has yet tried parking the bus infront the goal with them. But I am hopeful that they would be able to break through, judging from the speed that they move and pass, and especially their continous attempts at goal from 20-30 yards out. Which lacks in our first team. It’s amount of media criticism that our club has to face is ridiculous. They turn a blind eye to what Wenger is trying to achieve. Impatient. Manchest united, needed a first team player, Argentinian international, to break the deadlock. And that too through a penalty. I havent watched the foul, but I wont be surprised if it was a favor by the whistle happy referee.

  121. I wish I’d gone. As usual. As it was I was stuck writing an essay on the ‘right to food’ with no internet or radio!

  122. Ray Wilkins’ comment sensationalised by The Sun

    These guys are sure ambitious…

  123. This is interesting. 5 of the 8 Carling Cup Q-finalists are now known.

    Still standing are

    1. Arsenal
    2. Watford
    3. STOKE!
    4. Derby
    5. Man Utd
    6. Chelsea/Burnley
    7. Sunderland/Blackburn
    8. Tottenham/Liverpool

I would love to have Chelsea in the finals (assuming we go all the way), any of STOKE/Tottenham/Liverpool to exorcise the devils of recent results in the Carling Cup / Champions League / Premier League.

  124. … any of STOKE/Tottenham/Liverpool to exorcise the devils of recent results in the Carling Cup / Champions League / Premier League in the quarter finals
