Willy Is A French Crock-er (Sorry Joey), Pires And Crushed Dreams

If William Gallas thought he had woes at the moment, they were compounded with news of an injury forcing him to miss France’s World Cup qualifier against Romania this weekend. According to The Times, Gallas is suffering from a torn thigh muscle which must make him a doubt for their fixture next week and possibly the first two Arsenal matches on the resumption of club duties. In any case, it would seem sensible to rest him in order that he be fully recovered, especially since he admitted to being tired earlier this week.

Robert Pires has ground his axe in public over the continued reign of Raymond Domenech as French manager. Reading Pires’ comments, it is hard to deduce which drives him more; the desire to see Domenech ousted or Wenger appointed. It was one of the stranger decisions by the FFF to retain his services after the abysmal showing by the French at Euro2008 but presumably he gave them discount vouchers to use at their favourite Tarot Card reader and that swayed them. Or could it possibly be that there were no French managers whom they wanted available on the cheap and that they decided to make the best of a bad lot?

Whatever the case is, Arsene’s cause was pushed by the Villarreal player:

Arsene Wenger is a gentleman, and his qualities would have a positive effect on the French national side. He is a class act. Of course, as he is Arsenal’s manager he is not free right now – but you never know what could happen. If money is made available by the French FA, then anything is possible.

Except that history shows that even Peter Graves would struggle in the mission to seduce Arsene into the role of national team coach. Wenger has made no secret of his desire to stay at Arsenal and to have daily contact with the players. Perhaps in 2011 were he to achieved all of his aims at club level he might be tempted but right now he appears firmly committed to his ‘project’ of developing the current squad into champions.

Money is not the issue. Or ought not to be for if Wenger intimated to the Board that he wanted to leave, there is no doubt that if they were convinced he wanted away, his departure would happen. As that seems not to be the case, the FFF could offer Arsenal all of the art in the Louvre but not one jot of difference would it make. As Pires himself observed:

The key is knowing whether he has the desire to leave London.

Which seems to be non-existent although any huffing and puffing about how bad the traffic is might send shudders through the boardroom.

If Arsene did leave he would crush the dreams of one Tresor Mputu who enjoyed himself so much on trial at the club that he wants to make the move permanent. One slight fly in this ointment appears to be that Arsene has lost Mputu’s CV and application form since his ‘interview’ with the club was almost a year ago. I am not sure how it works in the football world, and perhaps talking to the press is the equivalent, but if I had applied for a job, I might well have followed up with a phone call to the agent before now.

Enjoy your Friday. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. 1st this time Chris!

Gallas’s injury may not be a bad thing if AW uses the next two matches to try out different combinations at the back with Kolo, Djourou and perhaps Mikel

  2. It is curious that Gallas comes out with the “I have been a bit shit recently” (Paraphrased!) comments and then is suddenly ‘injured’. I wonder if this is an enforced injury by le boss to allow a different back line without undermining Gallas. It also gives another player the chance to Captain the team.

    Just a thought.

  3. daokta,

    I counldn’t agree more. Finger’s crossed!

  4. sorry joey.. That aimed at me????

  5. Would Wenger drop Gallas if he wasnt injured? No way

If Gallas is out for next game Arsene please give the captaincy to Clichy and not Toure who has been as poor as Gallas this season

  6. Joey

Not unless your surname is Ramone

    YW

  7. no no… give it to Almunia…

  8. Don’t give it to Clichy! Give it to the future capt, Cesc.

  9. drew, why would domenech drop him from the France squad just because wenger wants to drop Gallas from Arsenal? he wouldn’t – its a real injury. a tear in a thigh muscle. his injury sounds worse than RVPs to me though I am no doctor.
Captaincy should go to Cesc I think. the reason being, if cesc is next in line for the real captaincy then i’d rather see if he can do the job now. it might be that he cannot handle being the star player and captain at the same time and his performances drop or he could improve on the pitch, or have no effect whatsoever. Point being, we need to see, so it has to be Cesc.
My guess if its not Cesc will be Almunia!

  10. That was supposed to be a play on ‘Sheena is a punk rocker’. Very weak, tighten up there please YG.

  11. Descarte

It’s Friday of International fortnight. It’s as good as it gets, headline wise.

    YW

  12. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Kolo Toure was the Vice Capt. Doesn’t that mean that Cesc is not exactly topmost on the pecking order for captaincy?

  13. Toure will be the stand in captain, Wenger already said that he prefers it to be a CB.. and yes Toure is vice captain. Next after Toure though is another issue. I personally want it to go to Cesc, but i have a sneaky feeling it would be Almunia also. Clichy is the furtherst from being the captain out of all of them – take nothing away from him, i think he is probably the best LB in the world, just too young and eratic to captain a team at the moment. Sensible old head like Almunia or Toure will do untill Le Boss reinstalls Le Gallas once he finds his ego.

I think Gallas is the most appropriate for captain in our team.. but we all have to admit we seem to make a big deal out of it !!

  14. daokta

CONGRATULATIONS is in order i think, i was wondering whether i was gettin a bit too attached to this site too early in the morning!

  15. Totally agree with Chris G. We all slag him off when he makes a mistake but nobody bothers to remember that he has rescued us from a number of tight spots. If you ask me, I think that the person that needs to sit down for now is Toure. Anyway, the internationals seem to have solved that problem for us. Maybe we’ll now get to see Toure and Djourou. Toure has been crap since the ACN, even for Cote d’Ivoire. I don’t think he’s captain material, and i believe he’s the weaker of the 2 central defence regulars and needs to find his form fast.

  16. 9, I think a lot of fans just want to see a big CB in there with either Toure or Gallas. but I agree, I think Gallas is probably the better defender out of him and Toure and certainly scores more crucial goals as well.
Gallas likes to bark orders at Djourou so potentially there you have some sort of leadership. I never see Gallas giving Toure a right going over. My preference would in fact be Gallas and Djourou not JD and Toure, though either would be an improvement on Toure/Gallas.

I just hope Gallas is out for a game or two so JD can get some games to prove himself. I dont wish long-term injury on anyone, but if it improves Arsenal’s chances of finding a winning formula then great.

PS I forgot Toure was VC – apologies. he will get the job then.

  17. Has Toure made any mistakes that caused goals this season? wondering since he has been so poor. Gallas has been the one to do that, no? He has scored but sometimes after mistakes he has made to cause a goal.

The question is has this injury been hampering Gallas all along, causing him not to react to the ball quickly?

  18. “Reading Pires’ comments, it is hard to deduce which drives him more; the desire to see Domenech ousted or Wenger appointed. There’s no mystery to Pires’ wishes nor the FFF’s decisions. BTW, later in the same article, Pires offers Houllier as an alternative to Wenger.

Pires has been a longtime critic of Domenech, as have all the players that Domenech has snubbed at one time or another. Trezeguet, Giuly, Malouda and others who’ve been omitted by Domenech have all come out criticizing Domenech. Recently the France 98 generation (Zidane, Dugarry, Lizarazu, Desailly, Deshamps, Blanc, Djourkaeff and others) have all been publicly spatting with the FFF — esp. the FFF’s president Escallettes. Escallettes attacked the France 98 generation as a “clan”, accusing them of a public conspiracy to pressure the FFF to fire Domenech. Zidane fired back that it wasn’t any organized campaign. He was just asked his opinion by reporters and he gave it.

There are indeed other candidates but they’re considered outsiders by the FFF – Deschamps, Tigana, Blanc, Wenger. The FFF have little love for Wenger.

Domenech is a company man. That’s why the FFF have stayed with him against all logic. The suits at the FFF believe that the French national team manager should rise thru the ranks from the FFF academies as Domenech did with the youth teams. There’s an argument in France that Domenech is actually a puppet of Escallettes. If France lose to Romania on Saturday, there’s talk Escallettes may resign.

Houllier is a company man but he’s also considered a better choice than Domenech by the French media and the France 98 players (who have a lot of authority in French public opinion).

  19. Hi, all
I’d love to see Djourou come in for Gallas, and Toure should take on the captaincy in the meantime – to promote someone else might be unsettling.
Djourou seems a lot calmer and more savvy than he did last season, and he deserves a reward for his great showing in the Carling Cup. Also in terms of match fitness, Silvestre might not be quite ready to come in, and he’s never partnered Toure. I can’t remember if Djourou has done so in a match, but I guess they must be more familiar with each other’s game anyway.

  20. Its funny how a lot of people say the captaincy doesnt mean anything but everyone has an opinion of who it should be in Gallas’ absence, Ironic. Anyway it is important, Toure should deputize.

  21. Just watched an interview with Diaby. It seems he had his thigh injury before the summer break. When he came back he started training and it was not to bad but once he started playing full games it became very painful.
He is back in training and he says the thigh is now fine.

  22. Paul N
    lol
I hear what you’re saying, but the title of captain does have huge symbolic value even though, in practice, anyone with the right personality can take that role on the pitch.

  23. This next post is a) off topic, b) very long,
and c) directed to NYmarcus, so anyone else might want to skip over it.

    @NYmarcus
I’ve caught up with your post from a couple of days ago, part of which was directed at me. I didn’t accuse you of not being a proper fan or tell you that you were not allowed to have an opinion. What I did say was essentially that excessive negativity on blogs CAN bleed into fans’ behaviour at matches. You disagreed vehemently, on the basis (as far as I can tell) that you personally do not take your negativity from the blog to the stadium or sports bar. I’m sure you must realise that that does not mean no-one else does.
Regarding the main point, let me explain how it works, taking Adebayor as an example. A blog debate is not a private discussion. Many more people read blogs than comment on them. Some people DO take their opinions from blogs, or are influenced by them. Imagine that if those who are inclined to feel fed up with Adebayor were to read NONSTOP bile directed at him, or CONTINUAL rehashing of his misdeeds, they might feel justified in booing, or even obliged to boo, because they think that “everyone” thinks like they do. Same goes if the bashing is on the squad in general, or AW. People aren’t sheep, but it’s just human nature to look for reinforcement of our views. (A poster on this blog gives derogatory nicknames to our players and the manager and for a while, when he thought he’d found a couple of allies, he was emboldened to make his nicknames more offensive.)
I emphasise that I am talking about continual or excessive negativity – everybody has some criticisms. I am not making reference to your posts in particular, nor am I talking about this blog necessarily. I am trying to explain the principle that attitudes on a blog can and do spill over into the stands.
I find it hard to believe that anyone could harp on endlessly and exclusively about the real or perceived failings of the squad, or read post after post in that vein and then go to a match and feel total confidence in the team. Surely all that negativity would become anxiety which could transmit itself to the team. Again, I stress that I am not necessarily referring to you, just pointing out that I don’t think it’s possible to insulate what happens in the stands from reaction and discussion on blogs. I think that that is obvious, you have made it clear that you think it is a preposterous notion. We’ll probably have to leave it at that.

  25. I agree with FunGunner…..it is also true that some players read blogs….and most importantly all hacks read them. Blogs are often used by the press and media to ‘amplify’ particular stories.

  27. Good news: “Chelsea FC owner and Evraz Group SA shareholder Abramovich, 41, lost $20 billion, based on assets excluding property and cash.”
