OK let’s see what week we are in. Hmmm, internationals so players are in their national squads, surrounded by local media. I wonder who could be the subject of speculation. We asked one hundred people who they thought might be the player in question…
So Cesc has once more been linked with a return home, something that should come as no surprise to anyone. Nor should anyone be upset by it. His desire to be with his family is natural, having proven himself in England, he wants to return the homecoming hero. And why not? He has not said he is leaving, nor that he wants to leave. It was an open-ended statement, the sort that all footballers make when linked with other clubs, doors left ajar not slammed shut.
Yet was Fabregas being that ‘obvious’ or was the message directed elsewhere. Like all at the top of their profession, he is a driven man, described at the weekend by Wenger as a ‘winner’. He wants to do so with Arsenal – his own words – and that was, I believe, where the contents of the message were intended to be listened.
Looking at the Barcelona squad as it is, there is little doubt that Fabregas would go from being a big fish to one of the ‘average – sized’ ones. Whatever you or I may feel about him and his abilities, Iniesta and Xavi are ahead of him in the national squad and would probably remain so at the Camp Nou were Fabregas to move there. In these days of squad rotation, he would get a good few games, no doubt of that. Yet I do not think he wants to move on that basis; he wants to be a fulcrum of the team. He enjoys it, his abilities shown to the full in such circumstances.
What he also wants is his own desire and will to win matched by teammates. Don’t forget he has joined up with the European Champions, leaving behind two below-par domestic performances. The message is clear; shape up. There is no ‘or I’ll ship out threat’ but the constant re-iterations of his manager’s confidence in the squad has to be backed by performances on the pitch. It should be interpreted as a ‘call to arms’ by his colleagues. It might be that he leaves next summer, the offer Arsenal receive being too good to turn down. He might leave in 2009 but reacting as if this is the transfer request or otherwise right now is to misjudge the situation, evidenced by the underwhelming reaction in the Spanish media, perhaps scarred by the summer’s misfiring transfer activity in the national and Catalan capitals.
All of this no doubt is being lapped up in Canary Wharf or wherever the Sunday Mirror is based, thinking that Stan Collymore is some sort of football genius for predicting this very story last weekend. The notion of Arsenal being a feeder club is nothing new and based on nothing more than a sensationalist idea, conjured up with the aid of five or six pints of ale in the nearest tavern. Are Arsenal a feeder club? Well, if they are, it seems that they do a good job of selling on players who cannot cut the mustard elsewhere due to injury or other reasons. The only players who have left in the last two years to have continued their careers successfully are Sol Campbell and Robert Pires. Henry’s personal circumstances and being played out of position mean he has been less than a resounding success at Barca, Hleb remains to be seen; Flamini is already complaining in Milan whilst Senderos is being questioned in the Italian media.
Meanwhile Manuel Almunia is keen to have his beach bum hairstyle seen in an international shirt but according to Ray Clemence, it will not be with England as he thinks Joe Hart and Scott Carson, along with David James, are good enough at the moment. Notably absent is Robert Green from that list. Whilst there is some merit to suggest that Almunia could be used as a stop-gap, the notion of him taking out British citizenship seems to be filling more column inches than is credible. Almunia meanwhile is probably laughing into his spliff over the fuss being generated. Mind you, anything that sends the Daily Mail into apoplexies has to be worth a go, doesn’t it?
Apparently, Heather Rabbatts of Millwall is being considered for the CEO role at the club. She is already being written off by a gin-soaked hack on the basis that the Sarf Londoners have not won anything under her stewardship and have had four managers in the past two and half years, and I am sure that has nothing to do with the mysogyny at all.
Finally, those who wish to receive a daily dose of ACLF via email can do so by clicking here.

Nice blogg as always.. I cant believe how they continue to bring up these stories, it just really makes me wonder whether the Spanish press really dont have anything else to write about. What also makes me laugh is how Cesc come out in public and criticised his former club for the transfer dealings not so long ago and yet they still think hes on the verge of quitting Arsenal.?!!. I dont even think ‘morally’ Cesc wants to go Barcelona anyway.. his heart may say otherwise in a few years though. But we all know where his loyalties lie.

I dont think we as fans can second guess what cesc is thinking. we dont know for sure what he said this week but I would not be in the least bit surprised to hear him say he’d like a move back home. I expect him to play his best years in a Barca shirt.
Do we as fans get irate about that? some might, but then how can we moan about other players doing exactly the same thing?? why do we give cesc so much more slack over this issue? Is it just because he is very very good. Yes mostly, but I think its also to do with the fact that we recognise that Cesc comes from the country with a league equally as strong as the Prem league. His HOME country has a strong league, so he does not need to be abroad.
togo does not have a strong league, nor does Belerus, so these players have no reason to want to play in Spain above England. Cesc does.
He will go at some point, and Arsenal will carry on just like we have always carried on. We wont fall into a great black hole just because a player leaves. we already have players such as Ramsey, Nasri and Wilshere who are lining up to take his position.

In fairness to the Spanish press, they reported just what the player said.
gazzap
Cesc gets the slack because he is the best player at the club at the moment. Agree that there are players coming through who could take his place but let’s be honest, if you have one of the best in the world, you want to hold on to them for as long as possible.

gazzap… i have to disagree with you, ur point there has no foundation.
Just because hes Spanish does not mean inevetibibly he will want to play in the Spanish League. He has stated a million times how he can see himself spending his whole career at Arsenal, we have alot more to offer a player than other clubs. I dont think alot of fans realise how lucky our players are to be playing for the Arsenal… why do you think every player that leaves regrets it and only has nice things to say about our club? well except Cashley! Our players are treated right, and Arsenal is a family.. watching them play you can see all this.
Of course we have to show our best players that our sporting ambitions are as high as theirs to keep them at the club. I think they are, and i think everyone at Arsenal is aiming to achieving the same goals. Confidence is low at the moment, but it doesnt mean our ambitions for the season are dropping. If cesc was to leave Arsenal in the recent future i dont think it will be down to his sporting ambitions because we all know our squad is the most promisingin Europe, despite what you all may think on recent form.

They may have reported just what he said,. but they dont mention the actual question they asked him, nor the full answer he has given. They always twist things slightly to suite themselves, I know the Sun reports alot of rubbish but the Spanish press are directly speculating for their own clubs. Are they paid to constantly produce articles like this is the question i want to know?

Would Cesc want to return to his homeland if he was Belerussian?
YW, do you think its FAIR that we cut cesc slack because he is an excellent player? why should a player be given different rights by the fans just because of their ability? surely, its either morally wrong or morally right?
“The Netherlands’ injury crisis deepened Wednesday with Arsenal striker Robin van Persie ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against Iceland because of a hamstring injury.”

I’m going to have to start emotionally detaching myself from the thought of having Fab 4 in our squad. He’s not going to stick around with us forever, it’s just something we’ve got to accept as inevitable. As a fan i’m forever indebted to Cesc for the sheer class and maturity which he has shown, and when he eventually goes i’ll wish him all the best.
It could well turn out that he stays with us for another 2 or 3 years though, who knows. If he leaves us at the age of 23 or 24, he will have spent a good 8 years with us and still have so much more ahead of him in his career, which is incredible. 8 years! At the age of 23 he would be an Arsenal veteran.
Hopefully by then we’d have Fran Merida, Ramsey, and a more advanced Denilson firing on all cylinders. I’m salivating at the thought of what these players can achieve, so when Cesc eventually goes it will give them the green light to prove themselves.

Actually it would be nice if Robin played in neither Holland game and came back fit. So those that prefer Nic B and Carlos may not get their wish. Great that we have so many forwards of great quality in the squad. Don’t mind which of them plays really…I hope we see all of them this year.
Amaury Bischoff looks like a possible Cesc stand-in as well as Aaron Ramsey…so good cover building up in creative midfield positions.

I expect AW to start bleeding in Ramsey especially for games we have won and dusted. We are a big club, perhaps the most economically sound club in the planet. We should not depend on one player. the talents are there. Aw has to start using them.

I agree and think Wenger should rotate and trust in some of the squad players more.. it will keep the 1st teamers on their toes to perform. Like against Sunderland.. i know we battered Porto the game before but we need to keep things fresh. Vela or Bendtner were prime candidates for a starting berth. Ramsey needs more playing time as i feel he will only get better and mature with games. Djourou also ashould have definately played alot more minutes so far this season.
Wenger needs to show more confidence in them to get the team playing more confidently.. but then again dropping a 1st teamer can really hurt their morale so i suppose their is a balance to keep.
By: chris GOONA on October 8, 2008

If RvP is injured I would like to see Bendtner play with Ade. Bendtner at present is the best link-up striker we have. Ade and RvP have not combined well generally this season and I think Nik deserves his chance. If Ade has someone to play him into dangerous positions maybe he’ll not feel the need to keep drifting out to the left wing which can leave us light on numbers in the box.

Chris,
If there is one weakness AW has it is choosing players and knowing the right subs and when to sub them. With the assets we have we have no business loosing to any team. Last year was the most painful. But this year his pattern of subs and selection still amazes me.
To be sure, Players dip in form from time to time. As a manager you monitor that and you allow fresh faces from time to time to bring out competition for places. Competition is absent in so many departments in Arsenal and what do you get? COMPLACENCY! Aw is not as ruthless as we would want him to be.
Why did MAnU win last year? They got back from lots of losses towin the double. That is evidence of hunger. Hunger in a team means everybody plays like their life depend on it, no complacency. The only time we play with a sense of urgency is when we are a goal down, sometimes it is too late!

Very true.. i agree he has to be more ruthless, but his decision to play them again against Porto paid dividends. The Sunderland performance wanst bad, just our team wasnt set up right to break them down. I dont think anyone deserved to be dropped to be honest for the Sunderland game. Just our tactics didnt work.
Wenger’s faith in the players has let us down though i would admit at times, yet it is nothing in comparison to where that faith has taken us. Showing them the faith he has nurtured them into the players they are. Wenger has time after time taken the stick lately through bad patches which every team goes through. When they are firing on all cylinders i think he will be praised once again to make up for it.!.

When did RVP get injured, in training for Holland? Sheesh! And here I thought we might actually have some luck with him this year. Well it was nice seeing you for a few weeks, Robin, see you again for a few games in the spring.
The only positive is that AW has an excellent forward line-up to replace him. Last season we couldn’t say that when he was injured. Ade had to work alone up front in so many games. Please, let’s just get thru this int’l break with no more injuries. Thank heavens Nasri’s not been selected by Domenech.
Chris, not sure what you’ve been reading but I’ve read Cesc say many many times in the British and Spanish press that someday in the future he’d love to return to Spain and play for Barca. He’s often used the phrase “it would be a dream” to go back and play for Barca’s first team in the future.
That said, I agree with Yogi that right now–or in the near future–he would not be an automatic first team starter at Barca as there are too many senior talents ahead of him. Which is why I think he’ll stay with us for little while longer. I can’t see him going to Real Madrid unless he’s willing to put aside his Catalan loyalties.
Even so, if there’s still no silverware for Arsenal this season, he might be seriously tempted to take certain offers that come his way from big clubs outside England. I think Cesc is loyal enuf not to go to another big club in England. I remember Flamini was quoted saying he turned down an approach from a big club in England out of loyalty to Arsenal.
I liked Yogi’s discussion of Cesc maybe sending out a message to his teammates about their commitment and desire to win. Let’s hope they got it.

I dont remember my heart being so gloomy as an arsenal fan. I had always thought cesc wont stay his entire career with us but I was hoping he would stay atleast till he was 25. Next to rodders he is my favourite arsenal player of all time!
It seems he will be leaving much earlier, and WHO CAN BLAME HIM? To be frankly cynical, his awesome talent is wasted here. He has held on so long for us, but he probably does not want to keep changing nappies his entire career so he is thinking of leaving. I dont blame him.
I dont think we should talk too much about the “future”. REMEMBER cesc was the “future” 4 years ago! It seems the only future we have is “rebuilding”.
Man, we finally had a player who will most probably go on to stand on the same level as zidane and cruyff, but our failure to abandon our “harlem globetrotter” mentality has cost us dear!
We are now in it for a long atrocious haul. It seems like a vicious cycle that will go on for a while now. We are more likely to be doing more “rebuilding” than winning trophies in the coming years, so hang on tight, fellow gunners!!
A RAY OF LIGHT?
(Note: this has nothing to do with what hansen and the other clowns say)
It seems the next set of our “future” is british notably in the form of ramsey and wilshere. Is it time for us to have a british base for our team. I am GENUINELY EXCITED about this!!
I have realistic hopes that they will stay for many years with us to become great legends of the club.
As gazzap pointed out filial ties are a strong reason that bonds players to their clubs. For example, if steven gerrard was not english, he would have left liverpool a long time ago. I am not saying all british players will stay forever faithful, but they are MORE LIKELY to know what it means to play for arsenal (this is not a reflection on cesc).
This period we are in now could well be a blessing in disguise. Frankly as much as I have supported the “team of nations” at arsenal. the club has lost a bit of identity along the way! Maybe after this phase in THE DISTANT FUTURE, we will go on to have a great mix and a great team! That is my ETERNAL HOPE!
Cheers all and up the guns!!

I wonder if Gallas is setting himself up to be dropped by his self-admission of a “drop in form”. Is this move staged by Wenger and Gallas now that Silvestre is ready?
By: Luke on October 8, 2008
at 4:14 pm
naga, I have worried about the same for a few years. we have stars in the team who are ready to win trophies now. they need to be surrounded by an able supporting cast but every time we get to the point where x player is ready, he leaves and we start again with an inexperienced player that inevitably takes a season to get to the level of being able to win things. just 1 inexperienced player or 1 weak position is enough to mean we cannot win the league. you need 11 strong players virtually game in game out. there are no easy games anymore. at the moment we have an issue with central midfield. Flam was ready to win things, now we have taken the backward step in trying to develop either Den or Song. Next year they might be ready but top players will get tired of waiting and eventually they will leave.
Once he’d made the mistake of allowing Flam, Diarra and Gilberto to leave, Wenger HAD to buy in a ready-to-go midfielder in the summer. A Veloso or an Inler. I think his failure to do so will cost us trophies this season and more importantly beyond as good players could leave in summer 2009.
Centre defence is a different problem altogether. thats down to wenger not being ruthless enough with a clearly weak pairing when we have more suitable players on the bench.
By: gazzap on October 8, 2008
at 4:15 pm
Luke, interesting speculation, I read Gallas’ comments in the Telegraph wondering if there’s anything behind his comments, like sending the manager a message? Tho Gallas doesn’t seem to be a guy who does anything in calculated fashion, he talks spontaneously, from his gut. He’s a very intense guy.

Gazzap!
I think we should let the defence go now. You and I and a few others have shouted ourselves hoarse over this ever since sol left, I think its a lost cause now. Nothing can be done now atleast for the season, we just have to back the team and hope for the best.
I dont care what anyone says our defence is not good enough to win the title, But wenger has made his decision and we have to respect that as much as we disagree!
To be honest, these days I am quite chilled out, gazzap, as it is quite clear that we are NOT going to win the league this season. I have no problem with my fellow gunners on this blog believing that we will win the title but I am taking the present scenario in good spirit and humour as it comes.
As I said above, I am truly saddened by the distinct possibility that cesc will leave us, but it was coming all along, in fact I am thankful to cesc that in the current volatile football transfer scenario he has been a true professional and a fine human being to stay with us this long and ably defending the club and its ideals along the way!
As I said before I will be thankful to wenger if he can deliver us the FA cup this season!
And here is something that cheered me up! Gazzap I am genuinely happy even for this in the state we are in!

gazzup, naga,
I have expressed similar fears at length during the summer and after Hleb and Flam went I became more pessimistic about this season. I hear your arguments about losing players and starting again with new ones who have to develop although Nasri looks really good.
I am not going to write us off though and will wait and see how this team develops during the season.
I felt that Flam/Tom/Hleb/Cesc was the best midfield in Europe in terms of possession and creativity but Ton couldn’t stay fit and Hleb and Flam have gone. Any team would struggle after losing 3/4 of last season’s first choice midfield (although Tom could still come back).
This is past though. Its a question of whether certain players can progress sufficiently- Denilson, Song, Theo, Nik, Vela; stay fit – Tom, Diaby; or recapture old form; RvP, Ade.

Gazzap and naga up to ur old tricks again…ever the eternal optimists!LOL! Anybody would think we were languishing at the botom of the table like Spurs. Chris and confident If Wenger didnt have faith and belief in his players then all the times we all held our breath and braced ourselves for the worst when Wrighty, Adams, Keown et al, Viera , Cashley, Thierry, Pires went we would never have experienced the joy of Cesc, the industry of Clichy and Sagna, Toure at his best, RVP, Ade, Theo, Vela,1-0 in the Bernebeau, 2-0 in the San Siro to name a few being rolled out on a regular basis.
When we look back nostalgically at the invincibles of 2003-04 then we r no worse than those people that keep going on about 1966! Things have changed a lot since then and the competition around when the invincibles ruled is nowhere near the competitivenes of the current EPL.The invincibles also choked most times they met Man U and were pussycats in Europe! Which this current crop have proved they are not.

Great read.
The statements Cesc made to the press shouldn’t raise too much concern. We all know how the press slices and dices words to attract attention…
I believe Cesc will play out his golden years at Arsenal and go down as the greatest player in club history. He’s a smart lad. I’m sure he’s learned the following things in his short, but wonderfully rich career at Arsenal:
1. Arsenal under Arsene is the greatest place to learn the beautiful game
2. Leadership qualities from Henry, Viera, Bergkamp, Le Bob, and Freddie
3. Quick turns of fortune in the greed-driven, loyalty-lacking transfer market (Henry, Viera, Flamini)
4. Gooners are the best supporters in the Premier league (they will never Boo him much like the way greasy douchebags at Camp Nou Boo Messi for getting caught in possession one too many times)
All in all, I believe Cesc understands that he has a unique opportunity at Arsenal. No other club as decorated and committed to the attractive game can promise what Arsenal will undoubtedly deliver if he stays. His place in Arsenal history is his to lose. I doubt the boy will walk away from all the riches on the table. His place is secure. Just find him a goddamn Flamini.

If we didnt laugh we would cry Big Al. RVP has yet to play 50% of games each season he has been at Arsenal. The guy is injury prone
I will continue to make fun at RVP but i would never make fun of an injury like Eduardo suffered.
