Just William – Champions League Review

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP G
DYNAMO KYIV 1 – 1 ARSENAL

1 – 0 Bangoura (64 pen)
1 – 1 Gallas (88)

Before the match, Arsene took the view that a point would be a good result, a solid grounding upon which to build for the rest of the opening phase of this season’s Champions League. Now it is over, that view is not necessarily holding firm,

The game was a mixture of frustration and relief; frustration because the game should have been over at half-time and relief because we scored with minutes to go…We feel we lost two points

That assessment is not wrong. In the first half, Arsenal’s midfield grabbed control early on and rarely ceded it to their hosts. Yet the feeling persisted that this was not going to be a victory achieved by the wide margin that the chances created in the opening forty-five minutes warranted. The tone for that half, and the evening in general, was set in the opening twenty minutes. van Persie saw and early shot pushed to safety following good approach work; Adebayor should have done better when capitalising on defensive ineptitude only to beat the far post by a marginal distance. Perhaps the worst offender was Cesc, who really should have buried the ball in the back of the net rather than the ‘keeper’s grateful arms, the chance created by van Persie’s pull-back from Adebayor’s cross.

Dynamo emerged from the half-time interval a re-invigorated side and set about earning some scant reward for their first half performance. Certainly they attacked with more purpose in that time but rarely troubled Almunia save for a Bangoura effort that the Spaniard turned onto the woodwork. The penalty when it arrived was typical of the sort given in European games and to home sides. Blackburn supporters are no doubt believing there is some poetic justice in that a defender was co-erced into conceding the spot-kick from a poor position. That Sagna was clearly pulled to the ground by the forward, in a motion that was designed to make it look like a push is irrelevant. In the European tie of yesteryear, Vukojevic would have been called a ‘wily old fox’ by Messrs Jones and Butler, before they chastised him having seen replays.

In conceding the penalty, there were two errors. Firstly, Toure played the offside trap having drifted too close to the goal, moving at the time the ball was struck. It was a split second but his timing was awry. The second was in Sagna’s covering position. Looking along the line, he saw the forward lose Toure and went to cover except he should have moved more goalwards rather than to the back of the player. That does not preclude any criticism of Vukojevic. Quite simply, he conned the referee. Bangoura took his penalty calmly but as he ran up, I cannot have been alone in shouting ‘It’s going to your left Almunia’; sadly the distance between us and the absence of truly interactive television meant that the Arsenal custodian could not hear us all.

Once in front, Dynamo sought to protect their lead, counter-attacking where possible but such was the paucity of their final ball, the chances never emerged. Arsenal meanwhile busied themselves with an active response but failed to really trouble the Dynamo custodian. They – whoever ‘they’ are – say that cheats never prosper. Justice was done when Adebayor fed Walcott on the right. His low, curled cross was helped on by Adebayor to Gallas, both at the far post. A captain’s goal in the final moment and an unlikely top scorer in European Cup competition. Repeat the feat against Porto and we will all be scrambling for the books to find who holds the record for scoring in consecutive games.

Overall, a point is a good start. The gloss is somewhat lost when you consider Dynamo’s team and their record in last season’s competition when they were resoundingly poor. Tactically, they were not a patch on previous sides emerging from the Ukranian capital. Indeed, preventing Arsenal playing by fair means or foul was their sole defensive theory, Theo Walcott’s legs will no doubt bear witness to that this morning.

For Arsenal, there was not much wrong in Wenger’s selection. Only Song came in as a change from Saturday, perhaps precautionary, perhaps to give the midfield a more ’specialist’ central defensive player. Whichever way, Song had a decent game albeit showing some rustiness through lack of action with his club. However, where Wenger changed from his usual beliefs was his substitution. Certainly the introduction of Bendtner for the Cameroonean international added more attacking verve, emphasised by the more robust directness of Eboue for Sagna, bring at times a 3-3-4 attacking formation. Wenger was not keeping much of an eye on Bolton as far as rotating players was concerned.

It was not a vintage performance but nowhere near as bad as some of this morning’s media reports nor those portrayed by Sky, sensationalism robbing them of objectivity. With events off the pitch set to dominate for the next few days, the importance of this point (or the dropping of two) will not be known until the final whistle blows in the Porto game in a fortnight’s time.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Cannot fault any of the team let alone Sagna. Noticed defensive mid field gaps appearing on Song’s substitution, though that was removed when Eboue came on. Vela did not get any time to impress.
Theo has done well to withstand a series of cynical fouls on him. Hope he is rested against Bolton.

  2. Good post YW.

The pundits have made some sweeping predictions on the basis of one difficult away game, but the Arsenal fans are generally a bit calmer.

Maybe I had my Arsenal specs on, but did anyone else think that Kiev team was the most cynical team we’ve played against for a long time? It seemed that every time we got a few passes together we got hacked. There weren’t many dangerous tackles; it was just constant niggling to break up the play and so frustrating to watch. DK’s best chance before the pen came while one of our players was on the floor.

Having witnessed some abject nights in Eastern Europe over the last decade, I’m satisfied with the result. The performance wasn’t great but that DK side was the perfect preparation for an away trip to Bolton.

  3. Anyone knows why Sagna was substituted? Was he injured?

  4. Al

They did not strike me as any more cynical that Bucharest were.

    YW

  5. You could be right. I always find more examples of poor spirit – rotational fouling, diving, time wasting – when those kind of tactics actually prevent us from getting a result. Logically that shouldn’t necessarily be the case.

    Shows how partisan I am!

  6. I was very frustrated during the second half yesterday which may have led me to momentarily side witht the doomsters, but I’m with you this morning, YW.

  7. Good morning all.

An interesting post, Yogi. Glad I’m not the only one with (fond) memories of listening to the great Peter Jones along with Brian Butler (who are no longer with us) and Alan Parry as the rotating sidekicks’.

A decent result last night, could have been better, but it wasn’t to be.

I hope the collective failure to take our chances in front of goal in what turned out to be a winnable game has a positive effect on the team for the rest of the season.

  8. Eboue for Sagna looked purely tactical to me. With Theo getting marked and kicked out of the game we needed some directness and Eboue provided it pretty well i thought.

Love the way a draw away in Kiev is not good enough for the media but a draw at home is fine because Ronaldo’s back. Ridiculous.

  9. Another good sober assessment Yogi, although I would say Adebayor’s miss was by a “horrendous distance ” rather than “marginal”!
Even allowing for Kyiv/Kiev’s spoiling tactics, I felt it was a slightly sub-par performance all round. No-one really on their game and setting things alight. But maybe that’s because they had mentally settled for a point before the game and were only doing enough for that. That said, Denilson continues to look the part in my eyes. He’s very busy and creative, and takes some of the attention off Cesc, who has yet to hit his best form I feel. Anyway, I’m certainly happy with drawing the away games and winning the home ones – provided of course we do the latter!
Will be interesting to see who starts against Bolton. Some of the team could no doubt do with a break but they’ll get that next week with the Carling. I can’t imagine Bolton giving us the space that Blackburn did, but I can’t see us losing either, whatever team AW puts out. I’ll settle for a scrappy 1-0 win at this point to keep the pressure on Chelsea, who I must say are looking ominously good, and will beat Man U on Sunday without much fuss.

  10. good point in the end. have to give the boys credit for coming back when Kiev had 11 men behind the ball.
just a bit worried now about fatigue going into Bolton. we really needed a home match not Bolton away! Kiev and Bolton might be similar type games in so far as they will both give us a good kicking.
Personally I am hoping that as many fresh players are used as possible. there’s no point flogging the tired players to death. I really hope Nasri is fit. did wenger say anything about how long he’d be missing?

  11. In my opinion Arsene should have put on Vela and Eboue slightly earlier, their directness and possessive football would have troubled Dynamo more than Bendtner whose first touch and hold up play were poor. All credit to Theo and Gallas, Theo for resisting the kicking he got and Gallas for refusing to say die even though it was his miscontrolled ball that led to their opening goal.

  12. Theo”s cross “HELPED ON” by Greedybayor are you kidding Yogi it was an awful miss by Greedybayor and luckily Gallas was there to ram it home

Both full backs,Cesc Denilson and RVP were poor last night and Almunia was lucky he didnt concede at his near post
The only pluses were Theo,Kicked to pieces and still put that wonderful cross in and Song,it can only be a matter of time till he will take Denilson”s place in the team

  13. Sagna could have been rattled by conceding the unjustified penalty and his substitution by Eboue was a good tactical move by Wenger.

  14. Eboue was the man who saved us last night, through his clever passing and direct play.
In five minutes, he changed the games.
With “stiker” like Ade, it’s hard to see how we are going to win a very difficult game like the one we had yesterday. But I was more frustrated with RVP. It’s time Aw gives a chance to Vela.
Walcott did very well. Gallas’s miss-control has contributed to the goal we’ ve concided. It’s time AW sees that Kolo/Gallas’ s partnership is working.
Please, Arsene; use Djourou/ Gallas or Djourou/ Kolo; it works in my opinion.
A draw wasn’t too bad; but it is frustrating going a goal down after missing open goals like we did.

  15. YW agree with except for the Adebayor’s miss.

He was hardly 10 yards from the goal and he kicked it wide. It was bad miss when a simple shot would have suffice and he would have beaten the skipper.

A point hence was very dissapointing from that perspective.

Maybe Gallas sould be made a striker.

We have one point hence not the end of the world.
One thing some of you may have missed is that our fixtures are relativley easy compared to the other 3 of the top four. We need to be leading the table comfortably by the time we meet up with the other top 3.

    Up The Arse!!!

  16. Even when we conceded I knew we would score. Adebayor and Van Persie frittered easy chances, otherwise the fair result for that match was 0-3 and an Arsenal win.

I don’t know what the bad performance was. I thought we played well.

That penalty has to be the best simulation or dive or whatever in football history. It was top class. He grabs Sagna, slides Sagna’s leg backwards and dives downwards. PENALTY!

    Damn, the dude’s good!

  17. he would have beaten the keeper not skipper

  18. Ole, yes it was a hell of a sneaky foul wasn’t it!? I dont think you’ll ever see such sneakiness in the premier league, but go to Eastern europe and you can expect stuff like that. Arsenal were simply punished for not being in front earlier. if we had gone ahead we would have gone on to win comfortably so we only have ourselves to blame.

Time for Vela to come in in place of RVP IMO. I think Ade was actually pretty good. He missed a bad 1 on 1 but his build up play was very good.
Yes and a mention should go for Eboue who changed things in our favour. He has been in out top 5 players of the season so far, so credit to him.

We must see Djourou on Saturday. every fan wants to see him in there.
Also would like to see some more of both Song and Ramsey, though the latter probably as a sub on saturday.

  19. Gazzap

You wont see djourou on saturday. If Wenger wasnt going to change the back four after Fulham he never will.
Song must start at Bolton instead of Denilson

  20. Hi Peter Storeys Budgie,

I just though I’d pop in and say how hilarious and original saying ‘Greedybayor’ is, keep it up man! We’re all cracking up over here!

  21. I’m not happy, we really should’ve won, especially considering they lost all their group games last season (in the winter as well) and even though they are a changed side, Adebayor, Fabregas and to a lesser extent, Van Persie, should’ve all scored in the first half.

Their time wasting, fouling and the way they won the penalty really annoyed me. Sagna had the first bad game I’ve seen from him in an Arsenal shirt. Our full backs need to position themselves better because often, both are far forward and wingers enjoy too much room on the wings (especially on Clichy’s side).

Gallas was awful in the second half and substituting Song for Bendtner clearly wasn’t very cleverly thought out from Arsene. Vela should’ve come on earlier (instead of Bendtner, I think Vela’s a much better player and bigger threat) and Cesc needs to step up a gear because we need him despite his lack of a pre-season.

Three home wins is a must because winning in Porto and Fenerbahce will not be easy.

  22. Ade has to realise that he won’t get 3 chances to score in every game especially in Europen away matches. His miss in the first half was awful as was Cesc’s (whose miss was worse). RvP didn’t look great either.

At least we created chances – nearly all in the 1st half and we should have put at least one of these away as a minimum.

Almunia looked dodgy at his near post yet again and Gallas allowed that shot to come in too easily. His mistake on the halfway line also led to their penalty

Eboue looked great coming on and Theo battled well despite some dirty tackles. Song kept things tight but lacks the dynamism of Flamini. We need Nasri back as he is another creative player who can change the pace of the game. Tom looks as far away as ever.

I am happy with 1-1 though. If we beat Bolton it would be a good week fo us.

  23. Dropping RvP for any other reason than rotation would be a bit knee-jerk considering the fact that he’s hit three in four League games. He’s playing himself nicely into form despite not being on fire last night – but then nobody shone really.

Song wouldn’t be a bad tactical change for Bolton, but Denilson’s not had a poor performance since Fulham either. He’s looking better by the game as well – great distribution and does get stuck in quite well. I personally think Song’s the better player, but he may have to wait.

I share people’s misgivings about our defence, but Djourou hasn’t had any action for a few weeks, and he’d have needed some practice before facing the Bolton aerial bombardment.

All in my opinion of course.

  24. The game wasn’t bad as such, but we didn’t take our chances and it came back to hunt us. Ade should know that it takes only a slim chance to be a winner, you ca not continue to miss chances and hope to emerge victorious . I pray for the quick recovery of Eduardo, his presence will make us win games with relative ease once such chances occur. Ade should wake up and learn the offside rules.
Furthermore, he should talk less in the press and let his goals do the talking. He relishes in granting press interviews, instead of concentrating on the next game. He need competition to wake him up. I have no doubt in my mind that Bolton will fall on Saturday.

  25. Was a decent performance, we didnt take our chances and nearly came home with nothing. I found Wenger’s substitutions good but maybe he should have done them a bit earlier, a few seasons ago he wasnt scared to make an early change and freshen things up. His subs do tend to work so who am i to debate that.. just feel he takes longer to make the sub in recent years.

The media can say we arent good enough.. thas fine by me, and takes pressure off us once again. I dont think they have been watching Match of the Day lateley where we are banging in a minimum of 3 goals per game. Still Man Utd got a much better result drawing at home to Villareal, British TV pundits suck.!!…

  26. I dont know if anyone else noticed this but the huge proportion of our defeats over the past 4 seasons have come when we have been live on Sky pay per view (2005-2006) or Setanta (2007-2008). not sure why. Fulham was also on Setanta.
It might be that they typically choose to show arsenal away up north in those gritty tough fixtures (Everton, Bolton, Newcastle, Boro etc). OR it might just be a curse!
I’m sure we’ll be OK in Bolton though…cough.

  27. RVp and Adebeyor need to learn to shoot more accurately – last night should have ended at least 2-1 to Arsenal. The rest of the team were fine last night. Song did really well in CM.

  28. Vela in place of RvP in the next Prem match….are you serious? We used to get comments like that about DB10. Look at the bloody work rate it is not just about scoring great goals. That was a very hard game against a well disciplined team and just as well organised support i.e. a very hostile environment. But for a very stupid refereeing decision DK had virtually no chances. Our defence was superb last night and it started from the front, with Ade and RvP harrying the defenders mercilessly. Don’t pay too much attention to that miserable idiot Platt.

  29. One game where they didn’t take their chances and they need to learn to shoot more accurately??! Come on, be fair. And Peter story’s Budgie – isn’t there another place you can go and irritate someone else? A Wrexham blog or Port Vale maybe? You could rotate and spread your words of wisdom and genius humour more widely.

  30. I find it striking how few games it’s taken for me to start thinking that Nasri is really essential to our attacking shape. Get well soon!

  31. Steww

Why would a go to a Wrexham or Port Vale blog. I am a Gooner of 40 years standing.Have you had a sense of humour bypass?Dont take things so serious

  32. Does anyone else think Cesc may be carrying an injury?

  33. Bobby in an interview with Guillem Balague after the Manure match last night:

Guillem: Have you seen Arsenal play lately?

Pires : I watch their games all the time, never miss a match.

    What a legend.

  34. Cesc looks a bit jaded, or just tired. Remember that a lot of our players have had 3 or 4 games in the space of a couple of weeks, what with internationals. That’s a lot of travelling. We should’ve won the game last night but I’m satisfied with a draw. I often wonder if Ade shouldn’t start CL games — I think he does better in the league than the CL. RVP had just come back from internationals, Ade didn’t.

And yes, the media hypocrisy beggars belief. Chelsea hammer a defensively poor Bordeaux (far less difficult than Kyiv to break down) at Stamford Bridge and they’re world beaters. MU can’t buy a goal at OT against an inferior Villareal, despite having the great Cronaldo on the pitch, and yet their draw is a good one.

Yesterday on skysports news I saw something that confused me: All the teams in MU’s CL group came away with just a point yesterday. Yet sky had MU as the group leader. Was it just alphabetical?

BTW, arseblogger mentions today that AW’s father just died in the last few days.

  35. re vanP we should note with pleasure that he hit two good right foot shots – one well saved and one just wide, rather than missing the opportunity by trying to shift onto the left (Platty’s “hasnt got his shooting boots” on was nonsense – truer to say he had a new right boot on!)

Ade’s miss was poor – and yes his work rate was good, but he spends to much time on the left wing (copying Thierry?) – fine to start a move there but when he passes ball on to Clichy or whoever he should move inside to boost the goal threat.

Almunia saved at the near post – no goal – that’s good enough for me – how much longer are people going to blame him for the CL final defeat (when in fact he kept us in it with a brilliant save in first half!)

Both Cesc and Denilson allowed themselves to be hassled out of it too much i thought…….

Very attacking substitutions – which worked – but risky – certainly didnt notice Eboue at RB during his time on the pitch.

Main negative i thought was that we seemed to lose our heads for ten minutes after the penalty (and Sagna did look rattled)

    Agree on Djourou naturally

  36. Big Al,

Please don’t mention Pires again. The thought of him leaving (especially for free) and playing for someone else hurts too much!

  37. Whats up folks?

Be down for a while. Had to go through Hurricane IKE in Houston over the weekend. Its really bad in some parts so I thank God for keeping me and my wifey safe. Please pray for the situation, many people are homeless.

I’m cool with the result and dont care about what these folks on TV have to say. We all know the biases of the British media.

Ade and RVP played very hard so I will not be hard on them. I must say that Ade needs to cool it on trying to be Thierry, I think he got confused between trying to side foot it like Henry or a simple shot.

I agree totally with giving Vela more play, this kid is a footballing genius.

Its to see postive comments reagrding Eboue. What can you say, you have to give credit where its due.

I am with Wenger as far as that inept ref is concerned. I mean, how can he allow the type of play, its makes me wonder if the bias against Arsenal goes beyond England.

As far as the penalty, I dont understand why there is such a big deal regarding the one aganst Blackburn. If you are running at full speed and get clipped (Eboue was tripped) it is easy to fall. I cannot see how this even would remotely compare to some one trying to put you on like an over coat and then falling. That was dirty!

Proud of the boyz, we never gave up and fought throughout even of we were not on top form!

    God Bless!!!!

  38. Presumably you believe that the god you pray to, Paul N, caused the hurricane?

  39. Frank, life is what it is but if you read Job you can see that the devil can cause storms. If you dont want to pray thats cool but I do not think this a time for debate (though I am not at all afraid as I am convinced of my Faith in Jesus) but this would be innopropriate as many people are suffering and I know God is merciful! if you understand?

I would have prefered you asked me how I was and was a little thankful for me. Maybe I am reading you wrong but what am I supposed to think with that question which offers no regard for the situation at hand.

    God bless you Bro!

  40. Hey Frank, let’s not have a religious argument on here, for God’s sake !! :-)

We know that God exists anyway, in the form of DB10.

  41. Just wondered…

  42. And I thought the racism debate was contentious!

  43. decent result considering how kiev were set up and that we played a lot of matches in recent weeks including internationals.
    http://arsenalcolumn.wordpress.com/

  44. Not contentious at all. Love same way Frank! I just think the suffering of the people is what is important at this point. I am not sure if you all have seen the disaster that is in Galveston, Texas (homes &businesses destroyed, Trrible flooding)? If not I would encourage you to look it up online, its quite sad.

    One Love!!!

  45. You didn’t sustain any head injuries or anything like that did you, Paul N? Perhaps an epiphany moment?

Where did you watch the game?

  46. or a bipolar manic phase, post-traumatic adrenaline rush, opiates…yes opiates they could do it.

  47. No my head is in tact thanks Frank. An Epiphany moment no, this how I think on the norm, but I pray you have one.

I didnt watch saturdays match as power was down but did manage to watch the highlights on the net, power came back monday night.

  48. You seem quite happy

  49. Frank, maybe I am affected by all of the above, who knows. I will go and get diagnosed. I’m done! WOW!!!

I would love to speak to you away from this blog and you would understand what my problem is.
Here is my email addess if you want to continue (saved4316hb@yahoo.com).

Anyway, looking forward to the game this Saturday!

  50. I am!

  51. oh dear oh dear oh dear

  52. Have a blessed day bro!

  53. Hey I would love to reason with you but this blog is not the right place.

  54. Am I the only person who thought that our second half defensive scramble started about 2 seconds after Song came off. He lopes around like a big aimless sheepdog, but somehow is always where he needs to be. Not Flamini style at all, but seems effective.

    Aaadebayorrrr. Aaadebayorrrr.
Give him the ball and…..oh, crap, he’s offside again.

  55. hkm, I agree with you. I think Song is an extra ordinary talent.

  56. Yeh and what is up with Ade neing offside so many times? Is he being tought about how to stay onside or what?

  57. Paul

Being caught offside is an occupational hazard for a forward, particularly now that many play on the shoulder of the last defender all of the time. And more to the point, how many of those decisions are wrong? The call is made by an official under a lot of pressure with no help from the rules and regulations drawn up by a suit

  58. Nice to here Eboue finally getting some credit. He didnt even simulate a dive in Kyiv’s half which is to be commended. His directness definitely drove the team in the last few minutes. I dont think Ade or RVP were that bad to be honest , if you saw the kicking the team was getting its pretty good they mange to create the chances really

Ur spot on NYMarcus if you listened to the punditry on Sky youd think Chelsea and Man U had alreay won it.Dont even get me started on “strength in depth”. Look where it got chelsea, It won them the quadruple last season didnt it! Very excited about Vela and Song with the eventual return to fitness of Diaby, Nasri, Silvestre, Bischoff, Rosicky, Eduardo.

  59. I think that Ade is improving the timing of his runs these days. Occassionally strays offside but it keeps the defenders occupied.

  60. I agree with Gooner4life

  61. Getting caught offside is actually a crime, it is, in fact, high treason, punishable by hanging.

    Other crimes include:

    – Giving the ball away (imprisonment)

    – Not playing to your full level following international duty (birch)

    – losing your man in the penalty box (flogging)

    – being injured (ordeal by fire)

  62. Muppet,

Have a word with Paul N, he will sort you out.

  63. Ahh, the old forgiveness…

  64. off topic,

Since the Arsenal vs Sheffield match is on general sale, thought would pay my 1st visit to the Emirates…any suggestions on which quardarent/tier to catch a good view & fun atmosphere?

  65. Distinctly average last night but thankful for a point in the end.

I thought Kiev`s `tactics` ie kick Walcott & waste time, stank.

Song did well & RVP is gradually improving, I feel but Cesc seems to have a Euro 2008 hangover.

Gallas is our best attacker right now which is just as well as his defending isn`t up to standard.

I`d like to see D`jourou, Vela & Eboue get starts at Bolton, in place of Kolo or Gallas , Walcott & Denilson.

  66. I get you Yogi, he just seems to be offside quite often but he played hard, cant fault him for that at all.

  67. Yogi, If so many of the offside calls are wrong what do you think should be done to simplify the situation?

  68. You win Frank!

  69. May your god go with you, Paul N.

  70. I really have to laugh at the people getting on Ade’s back for being offside? What do you want him to do? Not try to beat the last defender? If he gets caught offside 500 times and scores a hat-trick in any game…I’m willing to take the pain.

Why do we have to find a scapegoat for every game? Against Blackburn it was Eboue, now back to Ade, next will be Denilson, then Walcott, then Eboue again…..

    Fans are funny people!

  71. I think Cesc is missing Hleb and Flamimi in build up play. He and Denilson are much alike in passing but Hleb and Cesc could hold the ball in tight areas better than Denilson ang kept possession better.

  72. The alternative to expressing our concerns, as fans, would be to say that everything is fine all of the time, apart from it not being true, it would be very boring.

We are all arm chair Arséne Wengers, that’s what makes these sites interesting.

  73. Too bad the God discussion didn’t really go that far. Was in the mood. Anyways, Song was good, Adebayor was o.k, Gallas was…………………………………….And that about sums it up. Not much to talk about. However it seems Rosicky won’t be joining us for a while now. He’ll probably return even after Eduardo has returned and scored 7 goals.

  74. Muppet:
You missed one of the biggest crimes our defenders usually commit. The inability to deal with high balls. And the super ability to dose off at times.

  75. Ateeb, the discussion wasnt really about God but the Hurricane in Houston. That was my point really anyway

  76. Muppet says that DB10 is god, Ateeb…and I agree

  77. Paul:
Fine about the discussion about hurricane, but we have to get to the source of the problem right? To fully underdstand why such a disaster struck. And that would require us to explore the vast plains of theology.

    Frank:
I aggree too, he could be one of the Gods.

  78. Muppet,

Top comments. I too worship at the temple of DB10.

Paul N: glad you made it through Ike ok. I have lots of friends in Houston and they all seem to have made it through without too much harm. I used to live there and know what it gets like when hurricanes come through…it’s not easy. Continued wishes for a quick return to normalcy for all down there.

  79. Quite right, Ateeb, monotheism is so old fashioned.

  80. Thanks Big Al 2.40 – RP7 Legend

  81. Frank:
Agreed about monotheism. I’ve heard scientology is in fashion these days. And I’m seriously starting to wonder about it. I mean all the rich folks are going for it. Money gurantees, among other things, good access to knowledge. And maybe the people(rich) are hiding something from us. What if the strories about aliens and other higher life forms are true? They want all the good things for themselves. I’m telling you even if you don’t know what scientology is about, just start believing, if you are not in favor of hell fire. Tom Cruise can’t be wrong right? He did some really good movies.

  82. Ateeb, the name tom cruise and the phrase ‘really good movies’ do not go together.

  83. L Ron Hubbard was certainly onto something. I think the real Tom Cruise left on Hale Bop and left on an android behind on Earth. Now the scientologists have all left we are left with a a pantheon of heroes DB10, PV4, TH14, RP7..and their apprentices.

  84. whoops a spare ‘on’

  85. PSB – apologies. I genuinely didn’t realise you were an Arsenal fan.

  86. Ateeb,

Some geezer on the coast of England tried to flog me his book on scientology once. Actually, it was a talk about scientology followed by a desperate attempt to sell me the book.

The idea behind it was that the brain avoids all previous bad experiences and through scientology it is possible to free those pathways so new experiences could be attempted again.

Is this rather like watching Eboue ?

As for monotheism, I went to a christning over the weekend, and one of the lines for the godparents was ‘I renounce the devil’. I was a bit confused about who this is. Did the vicar mean Mouriniho ?

Don’t really know why religion is being discussed on this blog. This is religion isn’t it ?

  87. No Muppet..it is faith

  88. Steve
Well clearly you’ve missed alot of his memorable performances in various movies. Recall: TopGun, Collateral, Minority report, War of the worlds, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and offcourse the Last Samurai. He was the F**** Last samurai, what else can you ask for? Screw japanese Samurais, because what you get is a white western samurai, that kiked ass. Like he even got the hottest woman in the village(in the movie offcourse). You still gonna continue that he has never done good movies?

  89. It was the android in those films. Notice he never smiles.

  90. Sorry in fact it was the real Tom Cruise in the earlier films..before the comet. His genes however have been spliced into various other humans..one is in our youth team.

  91. Muppet:
Thank God you didn’t buy the book, because that would have been a waste of money. Because as far as I’ve heard, unless you register with the church of scientology( or centres, or whatever you wanna call that), you are not a scientologist. And that is the right place to spend your money, to register yourself, not buy some books. Books are old fashioned now, you need to register yourself, and that gurantees a Vila in heaven, with a view of the shore. Pretty amazing. Although a little knowledge of the religion might come in handy, if you’re questioned a bit before your Villa is handed over to you.

The devil can’t be mourinhio. Mournihio has a big mouth is always getting into headlines because of that. The devil on the other hand gets all the blame for things he doesn’t even have the powers to do so. Well serves him right though, trying to reason with you know who (not talking about Lord voltmore or whoever it was in Harry Potter).

  92. Voldemort..I think you mean Voldemort.

  93. The devil is Peter Ustanov…no no …hang on…I mean Alisher Usmanov..and God is David Dein.

  94. Frank:
You shouldn’t have said it aloud. You know what happens when you say it aloud.

Now come to think of it, nothing really happened ever, when Harry the rebel and stubborn smart a** continued to say it aloud, while all the others resorted to ‘You know Who’. Maybe Harry knew that his friend Morgoth would kick you know who’s a** any given day.

  95. Thanks Gris Gris!!!

Ateeb, I am willing to be enlightened on who you think causes hurricanes. Monotheism maybe outdated but that makes no difference to me as Jesus has proved himself to me over and over, so I do not waver at any type of debate, theory or whatever else some one comes up with as I am secure in what I believe.

I too questioned faith In Christ so I do not fight against anyone who questions His aunthenticity. What I will tell you is that no one has been able to disprove Him and the Bible as yet, so draw your conclusion from that.

I do look at life rather different as I have seen my almost come to a close. I will just tell it, I was shot four times and was close to death, after that I accidently shot a friend in the back with the gun I got to protect myself with from the guy who shot me. So I almost died, almost killed someone and would have been sent to prison for manslaughter. To top it have I had a false alarm, thinking I was HIV positive. I am not saying that my life has been the hardest but I have had some trying times which yes, drove me to seek God.

This is what i wanted to reason with Frank about but I believe he was of the opinion that I wanted to have a go at him.

Many will not believe but those who call on the name of The LORD (Jesus) will be saved.

These comments may be offensive, not welcomed but I feel like I have to write this.

    Be Blessed

  96. Amen

  97. Be good Muppet, I enjoy your stuff a lot!!!

  98. Paul:
“What I will tell you is that no one has been able to disprove Him and the Bible as yet, so draw your conclusion from that.”

And no one has been able to prove him either.

But I respect whatever you put your belief in. I wasn’t gonna slate you for that. In the end most of the people are praying to the same God, although the names differ, and the story too. But the content of the message more or less remains the same, as one travels from one religion to another. And it’s really hard for me to swallow the idea that God’s (whatever religion) going to throw alot of the people in hell because of their beliefs. I mean at the end of the day, they’re just beliefs. You can never be certain about them, now can you? Even if you are, with the best of intentions, you could still be wrong. Does that justify a luxurious Hot lava bed in hell? Not to me atleast.

And hope you’re doing ok after the shot firing incident, and well quite a hollywood like life you live. Why is that people usually turn to religion, or seek God, when the sh*t hits the fan?

Maybe you could make a movie out of your life. Frankly speaking, it is quite intersting in an absurd way. No offence. Maybe Tom Cruise can star in it. And may end up as his only good movie.

  99. LET US PRAY

Our father, who art in the Emirates
    hallowed be thy turf
    thy players come
    then they are gone
to colney as it is in heaven
give us this day our daily football
    and forgive us our fouls
as we don’t forgive those who foul against us
and lead us not into offside positions
but deliver us from 1-0 down
    for thine is the premiership,
the FA Cup and the champions league
    forever and ever. Amen

  100. Muppet you are undoubtedly the ‘Archbishop of the Emirates’.

  101. Hahahaha…..Muppet, that was quite amazing. You should be running for the pope position next time around.
