Transfer Dealings And Internationals

As the final thud of leather on willow beckons, so the end of the transfer window is nigh, especially extended to save the major leagues of Europe the hassle of working on a Sunday in their administrative headquarters and nothing whatsoever to do with Sky or their ilk wanting to milk another day of excitement on their twenty-four-hour-live-god-we-hope-berbatov-signs-because-this-is-dull-otherwise news channels.

‘Big’ Phil reckons Arsene wanted Saloman Kalou, roughly around the time that Adebayor was making his loudest noises. Chelsea said no and I say we might have had a lucky escape. It seems that the news came to light out of spite, Scholari claiming,

You know what players I want and now you know what players Arsene wants

And who says that Chelsea are not classy guys? Mind you, they should be thanked for bringing about a session of comedy bleating on disreputable transfer behaviour from Real Madrid, which made me laugh this morning. And Luis Felipe, it’s ‘wanted‘, past tense.

No real activity breaking this morning; rehashes of the Djourou to West Ham story seem to be the main line out of the Arsenal station with any number of midfielders linked to the club still coming in. It won’t be Jonathan de Guszman, a move Arsene denied making – perhaps the player is after a new contract – although is the denial, a double bluff? And Vieira’s coming back, no doubt accompanied by Overmars. Why not have Freddie back and re-sign Gilberto. Hell, Peter Storey is twiddling his thumbs. Wonder if Alex James can turn out? Hmmmm, a long day ahead.

Arsene reckons that it is all a ‘big game of poker’. He will however be signing just one player,

We do not need to strengthen but maybe for the numbers in the squad we can take one more player but no more

More public faith in the squad from Arsene although leaving himself room to manoeuvre with a token shopping bill on the final day. In years to come, this will all be done and dusted for the whole season if Platini and his cronies get their way, ending the transfer window before the season starts and doing away with the January window. How we will all look back fondly on this time then.

Arsene went on,

We are out to look, if we find the right player we will do it. But I believe it’s more interesting for us to focus on our strengths and quality rather than looking outside. I know that makes headlines but it doesn’t make you win games

But surely part of your strengths are knowing your weaknesses and seeking to address them? Whatever the case is, Arsene will be on the case into the wee small hours,

We are ready to stay up all night if it is needed. This season it is at midnight on September 1 so you never know. We have still a long time to go

Erm, far be it for me to be pedantic but didn’t the Gallas and Diarra deals go through after the bell had tolled midnight?

Robin van Persie has been allowed to join the Dutch squad, presumably the Arsenal medical staff have allowed this and are not risking the player’s fitness just to suit the Dutch FA? Theo Walcott has joined an England squad that looks exceptionally lightweight up front and will no doubt struggle to beat Andorra leading for calls for Alan Curbishley to replace Capello.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Burning the dawn oil eh Yogi?

  2. great post yogi.

Gosh i thought the transfer window has ended 12am this morning i thought i was a bit quiet just the ridiculous quresma deal that stirs the imagination.

  3. Good read…Cricket lover Yogi??

We may be in for quite some day, Wenger’s determination to talk up the strength already at hand, leads me to believe there will be no activity at prices that do not represent market value in eyes of the boss.

This in turn means, that any deals that do occur could literally be at the last possible moment as prices fall in the last minute sales.

This of course means it could go either way!

  4. Yeah, good read and I love when it comes out early in the morning! When it’s late, I normally read other blogs, but when it’s out around 8 am (midnight here in Cali), I just read this!

Also, wanted to comment that the other day when Keegan said we were looking to bring Nasri in….this would be like Wigan thinking they could bring in Ronadhino ahead of Barca or Milan…

  5. YW humourous and well written as usual.

We do not need Alex James but we need Liam Brady to do an encore with his left foot and 30 years younger stamina and then Alan Ball to try to come back to our mid field. Our squad will be in good shape and all conquering.

Djourou must stay end of story.

    Up The Arse!!!

  6. Very relieved to hear that RVP is OK.

  7. RvP loves scaring the life out of us supporters, the geeza is just injured too much.. He is probably one of our most important players, yet every game he seems to have an injury scare!!.. i think its down to the way he plays.. he invites challenges all the time and does things on the ball which u dont expect, so it probably explains why he gets fouled so much?? what do u all think??

Also… DJOUROU has to stay… Him and Song are the replacement CB’s, the guy needs to be given a chance, he deserves it

  8. Is RVP OK?? Where have you heard this Malaysian…? Is there any news from his X Ray?

  9. Where did you hear that Van Persie is OK? I haven’t seen anything regarding his x ray yet.

  10. Chris,

You are spot on, the way RVP plays, he is always inviting challenges from the opposition and usually his skill means that he gets caught rather than the ball.

What’s everybody thinking about a new signing then? I have done well all Summer not to get too engrossed in the speculation but today i’ve crumbled with newsnow, bbc and skysports all open on my desktop!

  11. the xray showed it was just bruising to RVP. I read a report somewhere last night. bad foul on him though – raking right down his shin by Butt. that could have been a leg breaker, as could have barton’s. I know Barton got the ball, but both feet left the ground and if Nasri’s foot is behind the ball, then it breaks his ankle. its not the fact he won the ball thats improtant but the disregard for the other players safety. so glad to see Nasri stick up for himself and get his own back a few minutes later – he’ll take the booking.

  12. As usual, referees refuse to protect our players from thugs like Butt and Barton.

No prizes for guessing what would have happened if it was one of our players on one of the England boys like Owen or Lumplard.

After all Graham Poll, who was of the FA’s most highly regarded referees, implied that it was Eduardo’s own fault that he got assaulted by Matin “the Victim” Taylor as he was “too quick!”

The outrage that would have followed if it was England’s top striker that was sidelined before a major tournament (assuming they actually qualified) would have been vicious.

  13. ‘How good it is to return home from the Olympic Games and see that there is one football team who rise above the sordidness and acquisitiveness of the Premier Leage. Arsenal, beloved Arsenal – one day, like on Saturday, monarchs of all they survey, another day doomed and beautiful losers… It is a glorious dream and Arsenal are annually prepared to die for it or, at least, to lose for it.

I am never quite sure whether they are the only team in England who have truly understood sport, or whether they have completely missed the point. But no matter, we are all of us richer for their presence among us.’
    (Simon Barnes, in today’s Times)

  14. Alex Ice Cream – Dead right, until ref’s and supporters stop making excuses for players who have no quality and resort to kicking other players we will continue to see career threatening tackles.

I don’t know if I am being paranoid but is it me or do Chelsea and Man U not have the number of bad tackles made against them.

  15. Marc, perhaps when teams play utd or the chavs they feel more threatened. perhaps our un-physical nature encourages bad tackles. we need a player who can make the opposition think again. the loss of Flamini is still significant in this area. I would like to see us buy a player today who will scare the opposition and let the other creative players around him do their job without the fear of injury.

  16. Nasri will definitely have known what he was doing. He’ll have talked to Silvestre. Silvestre, who was a close friend of the guy Barton attacked, was apparently offered a move to Newcastle but turned it down because Barton was there.

  17. And of course English game will never improve on a national level if the propensity to “get stuck in” is such a virtue for a footballer.

If that Barton tackle had been made in an international match it would have been a foul and caution, no question – regardless of whether he got the ball. We’d lose possession and wouldn’t get sniff of the ball for another 10 minutes at least.

That’s coming from a sanctimonious Arsenal fan so nobody will listen. After all, it’s our club’s fault that England are rubbish.

  18. 1st line: + the

  19. sad to know pavlyuchenko will be playing for the spuds…

  20. All you have to do is see how Kevin Keegan responded to Nasri’s tackle, sliced down my arse. It’s a disgrace that English players (can Barton be considered a player) are allowed to kick others but then can’t take it when they are tripped/clipped.

  21. gazzup,

No-one will argue with that but I still feel we do not get the protection that we deserve from refs. Maybe this is one reason to have more English players.

I still remember the 2004 FA Cup semi with United. We were losing 1-0 and Reyes came on and looked like he could have changed the game. I was at the game and I saw Scholes having a word with Ferguscum on the sidelines and then about a couple of minutes later Scholes scythed down Reyes in a horrible, cynical fashion which was more than worthy of a straight red. Needless to say the ref (Graham Barber I think) bottled it and only gave Scholes a yellow.

It was plain to see that Ferguscum told Scholes to take Reyes out which made it even worse. The spinelessness of the ref was totally expected. Scholes had made a career in giving out potential leg-breakers but its allowed as we all know “Our Paul” can’t tackle and should therefore be forgiven.

Imagine it was the other way and say, Vieira had hacked Scholes for example. We all know what would have happened and what the papers would have said the next day.

  22. Big Al,

People like you should keep your sarcastic opinions to yourself. Of course it is Arsenal’s fault that England have been shite for 40 years. More accurately its AW’s fault. I mean didn’t he buy that nasty Eduardo who had the temerity to score v England in Croatia and he the set up one of the goals at Wembley that knocked England out.

AW comes from the French/German border and England were knocked out by Germany in WC90 and Euro 96. This is obviously Wenger’s fault. I think he even gave the Germans tips against England in Euro 96.

Didn’t Wenger save that penalty from Gareth Southgate with a full-length dive?

It was Wenger to blame in WC90 also as he cleverly substituted an extra light ball for Chris Waddles’ fateful penalty which is why it went over the bar.

Its Wenger who gave all England’s players inferiority complexes as he has bought all these techically brilliant but foreign players who are miles better than England’s but the resultant embarrassment that the likes of “Stevie Me and Our Mickey” have been made to feel has ruined their careers and made it impossible for England to qualify for the Euros.

Wenger’s refusal to buy English players is nothing to do with the fact that they are overrated, overpaid, shite but due to the fact that he hates England and English players and that he still works for Germany, his real home country. Wenger lives here despite the fact he hates England. He doesn’t want to develop any English talent in case they beat Germany. This is also why he always turns down the England managers job

I could go on so its obvious who is to blame for this mess and I cannot understand why its taken people so long to realise.

  23. I agree with the state of refereeing and the lack protection afforded to players.

I still think that this was the source of frustration for players like Reyes and Hleb.

Take a look at the standard of refereeing in the Man City Sunderland game. Chris Foy was nothing short of disgraceful.

  24. .

  25. Yea…. i felt for Van Persie, Nasri on Saturday as some challenges that were coming in on our creative players were shameful. How Barton is allowed out on the streets never mind a football pitch also sickens me. That grin he gave to Nasri was evil and Nasri done well not to give him a slap !!.. cos i wanted to.. hehe

Great performance anyway from the boys.. we manage to play like that 70% of the time and the league is ours. RvP is travelling with the Dutch squad so that means hes ok… well i think!!?

  26. Joey Barton’s favourite album: http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/t/the_smiths-strangeways_here_we_come.jpg

Alex IC – LOL. You seem to be channelling a Daily Mail reader. I clicked on their write-up of the match and sure enough, first paragraph: “By Albion and Boudicca, where are the Englishmen?”

We stood up for ourselves much better last year, but it’s still going to continue – the first leg against Twente brought some heavy challenges.

My least favourite example was when we lost away to Sheffield United a couple of seasons back. Chris Morgan aimed a punch straight into RvP’s ribs, clearly on Neil Warnock’s instruction.

All part of a plan because Arsenal don’t like it oop ‘em. Ref didn’t see it, but Morgan got suspended later. The damage had been done in the game though.

Seriously quiet on the transfer front.

  27. The issue with referees (and their assistants) for me isn’t just about their capacity to let opposition players get away with thuggish challenges & tackles whenever they play Arsenal.

It’s also to do with the way they used to treat and penalise our players when we had more robust characters on the field of play.

Patrick Vieira, for example, was no angel on the pitch, but he wasn’t a dirty player. Yet, to judge by his disciplinary record in English football, you’d think he was one of the most vicious footballers ever to play the game.

But in my humble opinion, referees (as well as the FA) definitely discriminated against and had it in for Vieira, and treated him discernably harsher – consistently – compared to his English/British counterparts at the time, many of whom got away with murder.

  28. You’ve only got to watch some of the matches with Rooney in last season and way he viciously snarls at the ref or linesmen to know that certain English players are above the law.

It will be interesting to see how long the respect campaign lasts!

  29. Does anyone else get really worried every time Cesc falls over and doesnt get up straight away. Someone sad to me that Cesc was limping on Saturday and for a second I stopped breathing. We MUST stremgthen or we will not win anything again. Its not fair on the players we have got. Its silly. Wenger is an amazing man but why he’s making it impossible I just dont know and it drives me nuts.

Surely I’m not alone, I feel crazy at the ground sometimes

  30. All referees seem to think its ok to break an Arsenal players leg, thats why other players dont give a shit when they go in two footed on us consistently… every week i see it, i dont know if its just us, but we always seem to be just avoiding another ‘Eduardo incidient’… something has to be done.

This is why Hleb opted for Barca.. as much as he loved playing for us, just not worth ruining ur career playing against thigs like Barton..

BUTT was a complete prick also.,.. disgraceful challenges, saying that he must be pissed to be playing at Newcastle after Man Yoo.. explains his frustrations..!! hahaha

  31. chris,

I’m sure that Idiot Hleb had other reasons

  32. There’s Nine hours left. We Need Veloso. The Title will then be ours and our young players will grow in confidence and ability

  33. Arse21

Im sure of that too…. like money!!!

but the point being, many players like Hleb, Nasri have to suffer in the Premiership with players like Barton being allowed and ‘told’ to play in that manner.. its unacceptable. I like an aggressive game, but there is a limit, and that limit is when you go out your way to injure a fellow player. That is sportsman like and that is not what sport and football is about.

  34. Barton is a dog who needs to be put down

  35. I think that may be an insult to dogs

  36. That’s crossing the line a bit Arse 21. He’s done his time etc. KK’s just as culpable for the weekend’s events because he fielded Barton before his FA hearing. The lad reminds me of Leon Spinks (as Richard Pryor joked): trouble just seems to find him.

Still no news. Nada. Quieter than White Hart Lane on a Champions League night.

  37. Magneto

This helps to prove your point about Vieira. Paddy got a 7 match ban for spitting at Neil Ruddock while Roy Keane got 8 games for a deliberate tackle which ended Alf Inge Haaland’s career which he admitted in his book.

  38. Big Al,

Crossing the line? He stabbed a ciggerete out on a teenagers eye for a joke. Just putting him down would be letting him off lightly.

  39. Pleas please please ! dont offload Djouru .. i will cry… the boy deserves his chance, .
And Barton should be shot, there is no room for thugs like him in sport…

  40. exquisite
    nasri’s trip on barton
couldn’t imagine theo doing that in a thousand years

  41. I cant believe how quiet it is on the tranfer front, normally on a day like today we are linked to everyone in the world and here we are without a clue what is going on if anything at all!

Does anyone think we are actually going to wake up to a new signing in the morning?

  42. THEMANCITYDRAMAAFFECTSUS ALL.

If the Abu Dhabi royal family complete the takeover of MANCITY as is just being confirmed. They make Abramovitch look like a pauper. They just have had a bid accepted for Berbatov which will drive Fergie crazy and have said that money is no object.

They were looking at AFC and Lpool but they were not easy to take over, if this continues the only way for us to go if there is a takeover in the future to have that type of owner where putting money in the club doesnt affect them at all. Kroenke and Usmanov are just lightweights.and if the board sell next year we need Quatar or DIC to buy their shareholding

  43. I have never seen or heard less Arsenal news in a day ever before! its sooo quiet. the sense of anticipation is huge. If no signing happens its going to be a big anti-climax. I think then the fans will be relatively unforgiving towards wenger this season.
I am not saying the fans will want him out but if we have another fulham, say at Blackburn, people will be wondering why on earth we didn’t sign a midfielder – particularly if we are forced to field Eboue and Denilson in the middle again!

such a commanding performance on saturday may have taken the pressure off wenger to sign but its dangerous to think we can do that every week. the midfield still requires more depth IMO.

  44. LOL, joined this blog late, some funny comments. KK said barton served his time – No it was a suspended sentence if he got what any other normal Joe Public would get he would have served longer, then again it was only for him punching a 16 year old 20 times, not the other assaults he has done of anyone with in his reach! It made me sick to see him come on, and hats off to everyone at the Emirates that finally directed their boos at someone worthy of it!

    To the above poster-
    “too quick!”

The outrage that would have followed if it was England’s top striker – The problem is England dont have any technically quick strikers, except maybe Theo’.

England squad might look lightweight, but Capa needs to show how big his balls are and actually play players in form, not just because they earn 150k at their club! – Would love to see Bullard replace Lumpard!

  45. If Berbatove does go to City it affects our title chances MANU do not have a strong striker, and if they cant get Berbatove they will be hard pressed to find someone else.

With unlimited funds MANCITY can put Spurs out of the big four race

  46. THats for another transfer window to worry about, who they going to bring in in the next 8 hours to get them into the top 4 this season!

  47. If Man City do sign Berbetov it will hurt Man U as Solgooner says.

But I do not think that the Spuds are in the top 4 race anyway, however Liverpool could be affected.

What would the loss of CL income do to them with there finances already in bad shape.

  48. Berbatov is only sulking cos he rather play in CL with Manure, why on earth would he sign for Man City

  49. MARC It could affect us too if the salaries start climbing then we cant compete most players have no loyalty and all sorts of problems can arise. Its ironic that our stadium is named after the airlnes of Dubai, and if the board do sell lets hope its to them.

  50. FRICHIE if they give a stupid salary and Hughes tells him that he has unlimited budget. and will bring in many more players as Arab Business has said

  51. GAZZAP the MANCITY story has overshadowed everyone else.

  52. 30 mill fro Berbatov is just crazy, just makes you appreciate the way Wenger spends his money. He got Bacary, Nasri for around 20..
I’ve been desperately checking the net for some signs of a new CM, but now I’m staring to feel like there will be no-one coming in. I think we were after Inler, but for some reason that deal didn’t materialize and no there just isn’t any player Wenger really, really wants, available for a reasonable price. Shit happens, lets all pray for a season without injuries.

  53. Solgooner – I agree that thay will push salaries up in the short term but remember that they have bought the club to make money – not through it away. The increase in revenue they can make by getting into the top 4 has to be balanced by the outlay to get there.

  54. I am amazed that RvP has been allowed to go for the internationals. If it had been Fergie, he would have treated the injury at the NC game as a good excuse to retain him. I have the frights whenever RvP has an international

  55. There is a rumour that Man U will buy Benzema if Berbatov is going to Man City……probably not true but makes some sense. Would rather they had Berbatov who will sulk wherever he goes!

  56. Alex Ice Cream,

That’s a good example of what I’m referring to.

  57. Scary news today. Abu Dhabi is properly minted. The whole region is trying to raise its international profile – creating the next Chelsea and getting Etihat on the shirts will do that. The saying in the Abu Dhabi goes:

“They (Dubai) have the honey, We have the money.”

As Sol says, this is a big one.

  58. Etihad that is

  59. Bottom of 1st para: – the

  60. Fergie did say he had other irons in the fire. City should have kept this to themselves until tonight and then announced it, thus not allowing fergie any time to sign the alternative. Benzema is an excellent player but he would cost as much as Berbatov.

football seems weird these days. ever since mid table chelsea were propelled to the top by a multi billionaire, football seems to have lost something important.
now you get these mid table sides with wealthy foreign owners just buying their way to the top. Abu Dabai dont even particularly like man city, they wanted Arsenal or Liverpool really.
all these owners like at villa, portsmouth and even West Ham have no connection to the club. its all about profile and money. I suppose as long as they are trying to make money then you are OK, its the ones who can afford to lose multi millions every season that are the real problem.
it distorts football when you have clubs who are not responsible for anything they spend. If Man City join that boat then its another nail in the coffin of our beautiful game. this is where FIFA need to step in. Rich owners are fine but there has to be limits somewhere.

one day it will come to Arsenal. a decision will have to be made. do we stay where we are trying to do things the right way using our own resources, thereby giving us little chance against teams owned by multi billionaires who can afford to lose anything, or do we sell up to one of them and give ourselves a proper chance of silverware?

remember things might not be so easy when wenger leaves. not every manager can develop young players for next to nothing. the vast majority want a lot of money to keep a side at the top end of the league.

  61. MARC with oil revenue so enormous they dont care if the ever make a profit, They are having an F.1 race next season just because Bahrein has one and that will lose a fortune.

I do hope DIC forget about Lpool and try to do a deal with the board then Usmanov would be left holding the bag,

  62. GAZZAP if we ever sell is has to be a sovereign fund not to Usmanov or Kroenke who would have to borrow money

  63. It is not easy now… when silly money is available. Chelsea just nicked two of Arsenal’s best Ladies recently. What is to stop the newly financed City from poaching our best talents (ade comes to mind) next season. Players dont have any loyalty. Yes, Arsenal will make an enormous profit on the deal but then what if they get the next replacement and the next..

    It is a scary scenario

  64. I think man city will have to offer berbatov £200.000 a week to sign! and even then i cant see it!

Looks like them scousers will have to worry about man city now!!!!

  65. GAZZAP West Ham , the Glazers, and Hicks, bought to make money , Abramovitch did it as a hobby, and Dubai, Quatar, Abu Dhabi, just like to improve their world image backing and making a winner as they have done in horse racing.

  66. DUKE if they go all out we will have to worry too.

  67. I don’t think the ‘foreign’ owners are particularly different – in terms of their motivation to invest in English professional football – from those British people who bought into clubs over here in the 1970s & 80s and became directors and chairmen.

The key difference these days is that the people doing the buying tend to have substantially more resources to play around with than was hitherto the case.

  68. A question for all those having a go at AW.

Citeh have now got more money than they can print apparently (pyles malmer is beside himself, I think he needs a change of underwear).

What if Citeh make AW an offer he can’t refuse?

(Yes I know he’s a very proud and honorable man who has never broken a contract, but this is a question for the CMB’s not the AKB’s).

AW has long since known that there is no point in trying to bid against chel$ki or even manusa.

Citeh will just be added to that list.

The more I look at it, the more AW’s way looks not only the most sensible way to cope, it lokks like the ONLY way to cope.

  69. sorry *looks”

  70. well it is still going to be hard for man city to attract big players! ronaldinho turned them dowm and berkatov will do so today!

  71. sol, I agree either we stay as we are or we get in someone who thinks money is no object. what we must not do is sell out to somone who has to load the club up with debt that we (the fans) have to repay over the years.
I’d much rather we stay as we are now, but ask me that in 10 years time when we finish 12th and I might just give you a different answer.

  72. GAZZAP we need to be realistic, if DIC buy Lpool then it will affect us, we need one of the oil rich sovereign funds, Thats what DD should have looked for instead of Kroenke and then Usmanov.

  73. Hopefully Platini is onto something and all these bored millionaires will think twice about splashing cash on depreciating assets. Its one thing to give a cash injection into a club cos you have an interest in it doing well, but all the other owners that think they can wrack up huge debt just because a club will be able to pay off the debt over a certain period is a joke. They need to bring in a law that you you have to pay for your signings up front!

  74. God, the desperation of waiting for news. With every passing moment you have to know that the chance of making any significant signing reduces … I’d be surprised if we do anything more than bring someone in on loan. I expect we’ll lose a few more youngsters on loan, and wouldn’t be a surprised if there’s a move which leads us to question Wenger’s sanity, such as Djourou or Song going out on loan.

It will be interesting to see if Merida is still at the club come midnight.

  75. Dont forget that when it comes to Wenger in the transfer market, no news is often good news!!

I may retract that in the morning but I am still pretty positive that Wenger is going to do something amazing!

He would not have been chatting about being up all night blah blah if he was not going to pull a few strings! He has a plan……I can feel it in my bones, this is the calm before the storm!

  76. ???

    No? Oh well.

Another thing I learned from the arsenal mag is that no news could definitely be good news. When Wenger phoned Ade to ask if he wanted to come to us, he said: ‘But one word to anyone and the deal is off.’ So Ade sat grinning in silence for a week.

Unfortunately no news can also be bad news but I’ll check in again at 11.59 and ten seconds.

  77. Solgooner

I think you make a very good point that Dein should have waited and found a sovreign wealth fund; he would of had a much better chance of fulfilling his dream and if that included winning the CL then it would have fulfilled mine as well.

In the mean time, I see Dein as a sub sitting on the bench: ready to come on if we get an injury.

  78. okay,
I’m so bored – enjoy this!!

    http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/5404/jljq3.png

  79. Why oh why did we get Silvestre when Corluka was available. Quality player. He can play DM too.

  80. I have a question for all of you.
I have seen quite a lot of disgusting posters on a variety of websites and videos on Youtube describing AW as a pedo.

Isn’t there any way to put an end to such disgusting stuffs?

  81. AW, AW, AW…….say something Sir…though I think you will do nothing. But I am as romantic as u Sir so I’ll keep hoping till midnight tonight…

    Who will it be?
    Veloso? Appiah? Arshavin? or nobody?

    (Love the suspense)

  82. ScotGooner – classic……………

  83. my god is that it gibbs and randall sign contracts please let that not be it.

Chievo’s signing of kerlon has me intrigued.

  84. I’ll better go to bed now to wake-up in the morning for an AW surpirse signing (hope there is 1)

  85. Siva – here’s hoping……….

  86. Comment from the Northern Post -

    frankiex, durham city says…
    2:02pm Mon 1 Sep 08
just read that keegan had 16 and 17 year olds on the bench,a bit dangerous with barton on the bench,he might of beat them up.

  87. Arsene is in the crowd at the reserves game!

  88. maybe he is looking at some chelsea reserve players!!

  89. Arsene looked like he was falling asleep at Underhill tonight. Hope he wakes before midnight.

  90. lol steve looks lik the manure have got their man

  91. so berbatov is at utd and robinho might sign for city.
bloody hell, city are serious. I heard today that they have unlimited money to invest in the club – several hundred million pounds are not an issue.

meanwhile wenger’s more interested in watching reserves. he was on TV earlier and said he wasn’t buying anyone. now he could be lying but I dont think wenger would ever tell a direct lie like that. so my feeling is we are not going to sign anyone else now.

I really hope we dont suffer any injuries to our midfielders because we cannot deal with them.

  92. If Arsene was in the crowd at the reserves tonight, I think that says it all about his intentions to sign players before midnight…..

Arsene has been emboldened by his teams cavalier dismissals of two VERY AVERAGE teams and he may have reassured himself that he does not need a signing. I did see many positives in the last 2 displays but you cannot form an opinion until the team has at least played at Blackburn/Bolton away

2 scenarios worry me if we don’t sign anybody

Fabregas gets injured – in that case, we must hope for Nasri or a fit Rosicky to play that role

The physical power / strenght of the team for the roughhouse fixtures away to the Northern teams and direct long ball tactics to expose our centre backs aerial deficit. Been a problem for 2 seasons now. Two ways to address this – have a tall DCM and/or taller CB. We can look to use Djourou at CB as he is tall and maybe combine with Song in CM – that’s about as “tough” as we can be with teh existing squad. In my view, Wenger has made a mistake.

If he gets away with it – great. If not, history will not be kind and the Professors stock will be seriously damaged.

  93. ha ha

man city are in dreamland…think they can just come along and snap up all these top players! who wants to go there? old hughes will have to get them in the cl first i think!!

  94. Berbatov at UTD – serious bad news. Tottenham, if they were serious about being a top club, missed an important opportunity to f*ck UTD over.

Why not accept Citys bid and tell Berbatov it’s the only deal in town (take it or stay put)and leave uTD in the sh*t

  95. Alan g

on the plus side…last year we didnt have vela and nasri who are going to be class!

attack wise i think we are better equiped this term, and another plus is we have no ponderos at the back aswell!!

and hopefully van persie can play more!!

  96. dukeGoonem

Agreed – The fabregas / Nasri / Vela triangle really excites me – particularl at home

Vela looks like he could explode this season from waht I have seen pre-season and last Saturday

To ice the cake, I think that if RVP stays fit and Bendtner takes a step forward, our attacking options are excellent

Both Rosicky and Nasri have played much of their careers as offensive midfielders so that option exists to compensate for FAB being absent or rested (we have to keep him fresher this season for the run in)

My big worries are the CB pairing and the CM defensive options. Djourou/Song are the key – if they stay fit and come strong, they will add some strenght to that area of our spine. Additionally, with competition, Toure and Gallas will have to keep a sustained high level or they should be dropped

I am trying to be positive as the reality of no signing draws closer but I feel he’s gambling on seeing how they do until january when it could be too late

  97. yeah on spurs it just shows how they lack any ambition! selling their best players to two major/potential rivals! they have been bullied by their players, theycould have told them to sign for foreign teams or stay put! have they got no ambition to ever win the league!

but i suppose they will at least try to stop us winning the league by strenghening our rivals!! fu*kin c*unts!

  98. Guys dont give up on us signing a defensive mid, we are again linked with veloso…..

  99. The spuds have fooked up big time look at Man U they told r7 he could sign for any one bar real madrid because red nose knows full well that with r7 real would be unstoppable in the champions league.

Like dukeGoonem said they show no ambition in selling their top goal scorers to direct league rivals they have NO chance of finishing in the top 4

  100. damn if city get Robinho that wold be a major coup.

  101. TODAY IS ONE THAT WILL CHANGE EPL FOR EVER

Spanish press confirm Robinho has been transferred to MANCITY for 33 million pounds, this show the new owners intent to compete head on with Chelsea, prices will assume ridiculous levels, wages will rocket, and by next season ourselves and Lpool could be fighting for Champions League place. In January window these guys can go on a buying spree.

DD should forget the past and get Usmanov and Kroenke to sell to someone with real money like DIC before they buy Lpool. In this new climate the greed of players will come to the fore.

  102. Keane and Berbatov wanted to go and in these new Webster reality nobody could stop them. Spurs sold for the best deal they could get not to scew us.

  103. If we don’t sign someone I’ll be seriously annoyed. Not because we won’t have added to the team, but because Newsnow has been open on my computer for a whole bloody day. Some of the discussion on Arsenal blogs today has made Youtube look like Kant vs Hume.

The fact that he hasn’t ended my misery with a resounding “Non!”, means that he’s probably cooking something up, or waiting for a set of circumstances that may not occur. If we hadn’t made last ditch signings in 2006 and 2007 I’d probably have called it a night by now.

  104. AL we will all be pissed because of the statements he made, now in January prices will go through the roof because of MANCITY. Unless we are in the top 3 and roughly even on points at December 31st I will be livid.

  105. “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett is playing near me on tour next week – I know how the characters feel…

  106. Why are these consortia buying Clubs like City – explain the business logic to me please. They pump 100-200mstg in for what? To win PL or finish in the top 4 for CL. Where’s the return on investment? Does such success give them say 250mstg in return? (a return of say 25% over 4 years) – NO

Why then – Is it to raise their profile. Are these Clubs trophies?

If these Arab dynasties have pots of gold – why not let them invest in Arsenal. What’s the argument. They are cash rich and have little moral baggage. They just have lots of oil (albeit their people dont exactly live in a democracy…)

  107. I guess the statements have something to do with it as well, Sol. Wenger has been surprisingly explicit about players recently. If nothing materialises then I can only imagine that a deal had been set up, but fell through.

  108. well we know wenger wont be bullied into a deal and he wont panic buy so obviuosly things havnt gone his way/are not going his way

  109. ALAN Bahrein has an F.1 race I know several people involved there, and they did it purely for prestige noe Abu Dhabi will have a race next year, they are not interested in profits. If you fly on Etihad their planes are all new with great staff , and food, they dont care if the airline makes a profit.

They dont need a return on investment, unlike Saudi they have small populations and massive oil revenues.

  110. Solgooner – your exasperation for Wengerspin, as I think you call him, is plain

I share your pain and concern. For me, if he does nothing it is a gamble too far.

But life moves on. As I said, if he looks to alternate a fit Rosicky and Nasri with FAB in the creative midfield role, things might be ok on that front. Attackwise, if RVP stays fit and Vela and Bendter come strong (as looked to be the case in all the pre-season games) we will be very well stocked in the forwards (if you add in a returning Eduardo and some good form from Walcott)

At home we will be very strong

    Defensively at CB I worry

IN CM, I worry with Diaby, Denilson & Ramsey, Song etc now the options. A top class signing here 2 months ago was an imperative in my view

We just pray that Djourou and Song burst forward and break into the first team reckoning in a serious way and deliver. Otherwise…….

  111. AlanG they looked at Arsenal but teh current share holding is so complicated thats its hard to do a deal. Thats why we need Dein to swallow his pride and put a deal together for the future

  112. ALAN I have not called the manager Wengerspin for 10 days just to show my solidarity with him and all of u here. If he makes a ridiculous statement tomorrow
I might change my mind. Its all the other blogs that are really slagging him

  113. Just had a look at le Grove – 1245 posts

    The natives are restless…

A rumour is on there that Mathieu Bodmer has left Highbury House after a medical.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathieu_Bodmer

  114. True, Sol. I’ve done some work in that region this year. Abu Dhabi, even more so than Dubai, wants to earn the respect of the West. You can guarantee that Man City will have Etihad on their shirts before long.

These guys need the world to take notice over the next couple of decades because the oil will eventually run out and they’ll need to have created a business and cultural hub by that time.

It’s about splashing the cash in the short term so that the super-rich can maintain their super-plush lifestyles in the future.

  115. well i cant believe city have signed robinho!!!

  116. All the UAE have made a fortune since oil went from $50 to $120 they have massive property investments and own many major companies. Its just galling that we are Emirates stadium, yet we dont do a real deal to screw Usmanov and sell to them

  117. Duke with the money CITY now have they can buy Kaka, Silva etc. in January

  118. Bodmer is 6ft 2″, 25 and now a french international

Can play CM or CB according to my searches

He has some heigth and can score from set pieces as evidenced by this youtube clip

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnHZ2RArcWM

has he signed? – probably not…buut Im bored..

Let’s all deeply focus our subconsciousnesses and in the words of captain Kirk “make it so..”

  119. Blimey. Has SWP left Chelsea simply to join the new Chelsea?

New British transfer record? Uh oh…

  120. REAL have confirmed that Robinho has agreed personal terms with CITY

  121. well them spoit chavs got well and truly gazumped. and good. selling robinho shirts! typical arrogant chelsea . well done madrid that is how you screw over a team that takes the piss, shame another team didnt have the balls to do the same!

  122. CITY have have thrown the gauntlet down to Chelsea showing they can buy anyone regardless of price

  123. It’s funny that Bodmer and Veloso are the major rumours, they were the two central midfield signings I built a decade of Football Manager success with Arsenal on…

  124. are we jeleous!!

  125. OK, I’ve seen enough. Assuming nothing happens very soon, the doom machine’s about to go into full effect. It’s 1 am here and I think I’m too tired to assess the situation right now.

  126. City will soon be a threat to our CL place at this rate

  127. Time for sleep …… the Professor is already tucked up in bed dreaming about his experiments………… it can be done….with ze right brain wave transplantation, Eboue will be the start midfielder in the premiership zis year….I did it with ze bionic headless chicken and made him into a flamster…i will do it again….zey will see…

  128. Al you have to it the last 3 minutes go down to paseo maritimo and have a beer

  129. come on denilson!! turn yoself into a £20m player by the end of the season!!!

  130. He’ll won’t buy anyone. If a good Frenchie player comes up why not? Otherwise no one will come in; the gate is closed for Arsene.

  131. I hope all his comments since the start of the transfer window dont come to haunt him

  132. Can they hold info even after midnight? How come nothing is announced about Berba to Man Cr*p Untied?

Can we still may have something?

  133. Well Mathieu Bodmer looks like a pipe dream and Veloso is too expensive……….

City are the new kidz on the block so all better watch out if nothing I just love the way they made chelsea looks like mugz

  134. After midnight. Home. A little drunk. Full of hope. Discover from radio that Mark Hughes is entitled to spend 60 million on a single player but, overcome by frugality, has spent only 33 million. Oh dear. We, however, have spent nothing at all. Not immensely surprised.

    Blimey. City.

  135. Barba to MANU and Campbell loaned to Spurs.

    and Fu.all for us

  136. Maybe we have all we need?

  137. Honestly, who cares about Robinho or Bodmer or Veloso. Signing any of those creeps might ease your ennui but would hardly help Arsenal. Here are two predictions:

    1. Within three years Denilson and Song are considered among the best midfielders in the world while Veloso and Bodmer never make it past the group stages of the Champions League and most of us forget they ever existed.

    2. Eboue will do better in my fantasy league than Robinho.

  138. Sorry for possible double post:

Honestly, who cares about Veloso, Bodmer or Robinho. They might ease your ennui but will hardly help Arsenal.

    Here are two predictions:
    1. In three years Denilson and Song are both considered among the best midfielders in the world while Velso and Bodmer have been completely forgotten by all of us.

    2. Eboue will outperform Robinho in my fantasy league.

  139. Mark Hughes’s teams have usually overachieved, usually by thuggery. How will they fare now they appear to have several million rather frail wingers?

  140. The Independent reckons we might still have Alonso. Arsenal.com could be interesting come 9am? We’ll see…

  141. Veloso and Bodmer? Give me a break.

    Prediction 1:
In three years you’ll have forgotten about them and Denilson and Song will be widely regarded as two of the best midfielders in the world.

    Prediction 2:
Eboue will outperform Robinho in the Guardian fantasy league this year.

I’ll stake my collection of every board game ever made on either prediction at longbets.org

  142. Nothing at this time.

  143. Wow, it’s too quiet in here?

  144. Bit of a confusing one isn’t it? A whole load of moaners out there this morning. Good to see that this blog doesn’t suffer from them too much. My feeling is that there’s no point in dwelling on the disappointment.

Song, Diaby and Denilson have great potential, but we really need one or more of them to do a Flamini this season.

I just hope Arsene Wenger knows what he’s doing. It’s one of those occasions when the solution seems very simple to the majority of fans, and they’ll hold Wenger to account if it’s a poor season.

What I don’t want to see is this self-fulfilling prophecy: Fans expect the team to fail, get on the young players’ backs, cause the team to lose confidence and help bring about failure.

  145. BIGAL we stayed up till 1,20 all for nothing. If AW is wrong and we are not in top 3 in December we are in trouble if we re up there then he must strengthen in Janaury to prepare for the run in

  146. sol,

You my friend, are a mug staying up so late!

I was sound asleep as I wasn’t that optimistic. I still checked first thing this morning but wasn’t surprised hence my posts over the summer which expressed pessimism about our recruitment policy.

Buying in Jan may well be too late.

  147. Oh and I’m pretty ashamed of myself for staying up ’til after one reading football rumours. I tried not to disturb my other half, but got rumbled and couldn’t really put a believable spin on the situation when she asked what took me so long.

Just read your message Sol. Yep, I’m pretty much with you – bleary-eyed at my desk this morning.

Let’s hope for the second outcome! I think we can cope with this side as long as it doesn’t get too busy. So January may turn out to be vital for us.

People will point to Fulham, but I think that loss was more down to the dreadful form of our experienced players than our central midfield pairing. Denilson had a poor game, but nobody else did much to lift the gloom.

  148. Big Al,

I just couldn’t do it. AW has wasted enough of our time with false promises about transfers and I wasn’t going to let him rob me of a well needed night’s sleep.

  149. Another disappointing Deadline Day for the Gunners. When was the last time they made a splash on DD?

  150. Alex IC,

As gooner Roger Daltrey sang, “We Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Although I’m quite sure he wasn’t singing about the football transfer window, which didn’t exist in the 60s.

Although I have to say Arsenal did make 11th hour deals in 2006 and 2007. The thing is, if the signing had been made, it’s not like he’d have gone anywhere if I’d waited until the morning to find out!

  151. Al, Sol,

I have got the perfect solution for our blues. Go and read arsenal.com.

Is this a pathetic attempt to deflect from our eternal failure in the transfer market. I mean Eboue being suggested as some kind of solution to the problem?

I am wondering if someone has slipped some LSD into my coffee this morning.

  152. I saw that. It absolutely cracked me up. Just the thing to lift the spirits. Desperate fans go onto the homepage, get past the ATVO ad and there it is: the signi… oh no, it’s Eboue!

The people who run the website are either having a huge laugh today or they’re totally out of touch with fan opinion. What a choice of story, what timing.

Seriously though, he is looking better this season. He added something in attack against Newcastle and even did OK vs. Fulham. If he keeps it up the groans could soon be unjustified.

  153. Yogi, wake up – we need some positivity to counter the bile on other blogs.

Would have like one central midfielder personally – but also i have no doubt that playing as we did on saturday we WILL win the league. Of course injury and dips in form may prevent us – but team spirit and the sort of telepathic understanding we show when on form is not developed overnight anyway.

And by the way most people seem to have conveniently forgotten that we signed Nasri – who on Saturday looked awesome and does seem to have fitted in very quickly.

Also i am not too bothered by Berbatov and Robinho. The former will sulk when Ronney is preferred to him – and the latter will underperform – but might help City take points off Man U, Chelski and Liverpool which is good for us….

  154. Al,

I agree that Eboue has played better this season but in no way well enough to suggest that he could partner Cesc.

  155. well im going to positive!

eboue will get better on the wing. yes he will. , vela and nasri are going to tear up defences this season! nasri is an improvement on the no end product pleb!

senderos has set sail so no more missing at sea action from him! silvestre and djourou will be more solid as cover!

van persie must surely play more games this season! and when he plays we do rather well!!

we still have the two best fullbacks in the league and the best english keeper!!

denilson has to get better the longer the season goes on!

the one thing about us is that we are always improving! evolution!!

  156. Alex,

Yeah, I agree there too. I guess Wenger’s hand was forced. Eboue’s, what, 5th or 6th choice for that CM spot? We were seriously injury-hit, but let’s hope we don’t find ourselves as short as that again before January. I’m not convinced about that, but nothing’s going to change before the new year.

  157. Newsflash: the world is not coming to an end.

  158. It would have been nice if Arsenal had made a signing or two yesterday, and it’s slightly disappointing that they did not.

But I’d sooner Arsenal not sign anyone at all than make a rash signing just to demonstrate that we’ve got money to spend.

I think what is even more disappointing than the lack of new signings yesterday, however, is the instant return within the Arsenal blogosphere of the hysteria & negativity & collective toys being thrown out of prams that we saw following the recent loss to Fulham.

Part of this I suspect is because some fans simply don’t understand that, during transfer windows, whatever Arsene says about transfers isn’t to be taken seriously.

The golden rule – which should have become clear to seasoned Arsene observers by now – is that, when it comes to transfers & transfer talk, pay attention to what Arsene does, and not to what he says.

The other point that always needs to be borne in mind regarding transfers is that things don’t always go according to plan, and unless & until you’ve got a player’s signature on the contract, no deal is done.

In Arsene’s and Arsenal’s case I suspect that genuine efforts were made to sign an additional player or two…both during and before the close of the transfer window, but, for whatever reasons, the deals didn’t come off.

That is no reason for some fans to believe that (and to behave as if) all is now lost, and to lose their nerve before the full events of the season have unfolded.

Arsene will no doubt now use & rotate Denilson, Song & Diaby alongside Fabregas in central midfield, at least until the next transfer window in January 2009.

Patrick Vieira used to say that ‘the truth is on the pitch’. Arsene has consistently said the same thing, albeit in his own inimitable style.

What they both believe is that it’s performances of players and teams that matter…not reputations or price tags or transient stuff in the media or elsewhere.

I think they are correct in that belief, and I have plenty of faith that we can still have a very good season. I’m sure the Arsenal squad think likewise.

  159. So guys looks like no one is coming in.

Well AW has done enough for the club to experiment with the kids. So we will let him be. But if we do compete effectively due to injuries to Cesc or Nasri then he sahll be held accountable. I am holding on in hope that our dear Professor’s experiment will work if not Man City will be taking our 3rd or 4th place and we will be out of the CL next year. That will be the begining of our end and then we will really end up like Leeds without the CL money and I will presume falling attendances in the Emirates.
But the kids are good and we hope they will step up and they will have to to so now.

    Up The Arse!!!

  160. Magneto

You are right. AW’s and Arsenal’s future will live and die on the pitch. Lets judge come the January window where we are as a team. He is gambling but let see if the gamble pays off.

    Up The Arse!!!

  161. Magneto,

The only reason that the signings could have been rash is that Wenger has failed to successfully use the 4 months that he had to get replacements in and for no other reason.

I hope AW is right but if injuries force us to use Eboue in CM for crucial games we will be found out.

Like you, I ignore what AW says about transfers most of the time but it can still irritate.

Wenger has taken a huge gamble here and if it backfires it will give people ammunition to attack him. To be honest the criticism would be deserved.

  162. Alex Ice Cream,

It’s clear to me that some people – fans & pundits – will attack Arsene whether he provides them with ammunition or not.

Unfortunately such people can be found in all spheres of the universe. Such is life.

  163. But why Gamble? I dont understand.

Does he have a gambling problem?

Why didnt we just buy Corluka for eight million?

I just dont understand the point. One good player would help our Youngsters, so please somebody explain the Gambling tactic?

  164. Why didn’t the now super rich Man City want to keep Corluka ?

It is actually a huge gamble if you get the wrong player in. It can affect the dressing room & the balance of the team.

We don’t know who the targets were but it seems likely that Alonso, was the one they really wanted to get.

For whatever reason that didn’t happen & we are still left with a more than decent squad, so can all those people, who consider themselves Arsenal supporters, get behind the team we have.

For me, I am more glad that we have kept Djourou than disappointed at the lack of an incoming player.

Why don’t we content ourselves by realising that in Nasri, we probably have the buy of the summer anyway. Let’s hope the thugs don’t get him.

  165. Flint,

I’m sorry but your argument makes no sense at all.

We cant buy anyone just incase there assholes and might make Theo cry?

If we’d bought Corluka, or some kind of cover for our fine players, we’d be title contenders for sure, and us fans, cesc, and wenger himself could relax a bit and enjoy the season.

I think Arsene’s into self pain, bondage and shit like that

  166. Newsflash: the world is coming to an end.

  167. Newsflash: Only joking

  168. Too funny, nice piece and well written, as always.

    Thanks Mate
    http://davedragon.rilysi.com

  169. Arse21 – you need look no further than the late great TH14 and the huge negative effect he had on the dressing room in his declining last season……Flint is right (as he often is)

  170. Well I for one will still give Arsenal my support even without any more signings. I just hope we can get a season with less long term injuries to the squad.

  171. Arse21,

I hear your frustrations and share many of them but I don’t understand why Corluka would have solved our problem – he’s a right back.

I don’t feel as bad as some of the other Gooners as I wasn’t expecting too much. Its still disappointing though and I feel it leaves us “short”.

Some of the reactions have been pathetic though: sack Wenger, he’s a c*** and some people seem to have developed some kind of hatred for Wenger which baffles me.

I do think that he could have done better here ie kept Diarra/Flam or replaced them as I have said many times on this blog but that does not mean that I want AW out.

I hope he is right about our squad but it just looks to thin to me and its a worry but this will not stop me supporting the club 100% as I like to think I always do. I cheered on Don Howe’s teams after all!

  172. Steve/Flint

You all missed the point. You take dissent as none support. We live a democratic environment the last I look. We will still support the club, THe Arsenal. Have no doubt about that. We question AW decision to gamble on not signing any one or he had intended to sign some one left it too late that it fell through or simply unwilling to pay the 3 to 5 million more.
Almost all agree that signing one or even two more will increase our chances of silver ware. No one guarantees us winning but that but it does increase our competitiveness over a long season of injuries, drop in form and fatigue.

We will still support the team but I am personally very dissapointed and less optimistic about our chances. NOw we have to hope and pray for no injuries to Cesc and Nasir. And Diaby, Eboue, Denilson and Theo step up the plate.

There is a alot of praying and hoping and in my opinion not really necessary to do so.

    Nevertheless UP The Arse!!!!

  173. Alex Ice, Steve, Big Johan,

Of course I’ll give my full support, that goes without saying. This is a discussion Blog Isn’t it?

All I’m saying is that I feel Wenger makes things unneccesarily hard for himself, and I dont understand why.

PS – Corluka can play anywhere accros the defence and also as DM. V.goos footballer and would defo have chose us over the yids

  174. I agree with Flint

  175. Frank,

    No, you agree with me

  176. LET US ALL REALIZE ARSENAL IS NOT THE TEAM WE ONCE WATCHED ON THE TERRACES AT HIGHBURY.

THE EPL IS A MASSIVE BUSINESS, AND YESTERDAYS SHOCK NEWS FROM ABU DHABI SHOULD RING AN ALARM BELL, WAGES AND TRANSFER FEES WILL GO UP, FORTUNATELY AW HAS GOT SOME GEMS, BUT IT WILL BE HARDER NOW.

TO SURVIVE AT THE TOP WE WILL HAVE TO ADAPT, WE HAVE TO HOPE THAT A SOVEREIGN FUND WILL DO A DEAL WITH DEIN TO GET RID OF USMANOV AND GET A MAJORITY STAKE FROM THE OTHER SHAREHOLDERS.

THE ECL NEXT YEAR HAS DIFFERENT RULES AND IT WILL BE HARDER FOR US.

WE NEED , CESC, SAGNA, CLICHY, NOT TO BE INJURED, AND RVP. EDS, ROSICKY TO COME BACK INJURY FREE AND WALCOTT, SONG, VELA TO LIVE UP TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL IF WE ARE TO DO WELL.

  177. I agree with Frank

  178. FLINT We both love AFC but the squad needs strengthening, Nasri for Hleb is great, but Ramsay for Flamini maybe in 3 years, Sylvestre for Senderos about the same level , Bischoff and Coquelin our hopes for the future.

Do you agree with Wengersxxx about Ebuoe? I hope hes right.

  179. Flint/Frank

Lets hope the thugs don’t get him…. if they do we still have Eboue the pass master.( with all due respect to Eboue) or maybe Ross( no he most likely be be gotten by the thugs before Nasri) or may be Diaby but then again he is injured half the time or may be Theo but he does not track back and protect his full back enough.

See what I mean even when fit those can not really replace Nasri let alone Cesc.

We may end up with Ramsey and Eboue at the center one of these days…sigh.

    Up The Arse!!!

  180. Where is Yogi? We are all drifting in yesterday’s blog, awaiting guidance from above…………

  181. Passmaster Eboue! That has a nice ring to it.

I’ve decided: Whoever took the Eboue decision for the Arsenal website today is a master of bathos.

Anyway, I think the most heartening point to make today is that, with the exception of Gallas and Silvestre, there’s scope for improvement for every player in our squad. It doesn’t matter how good they are now, statistics say that they’re yet to reach their optimum age for their positions. How many of our big 4 rivals can say that about themselves?

I suppose they don’t care. If performances slip then it’s nothing a few million won’t solve.

However, the difference for us is that we’ve got a side that is maturing together, and the understanding that’s being developed could make all the difference in the future. These interrelationships are the foundation for a great team that plays great football and could give us the edge in the face of difficult odds.

And if it doesn’t work then it’s a beautiful dream. Watching Arsenal inspires me as much when we finish 4th as it did when we won the league. I can’t imagine how anyone could witness Saturday’s
football and still have the heart to say “Wenger Out”. In fact I challenge them to do that.

Simon Barnes put it perfectly in his article: “I am never quite sure whether they are the only team in England who have truly understood sport, or whether they have completely missed the point. ”

We’re the only successful team in the country with a shred of class and dignity left. And we play football as it was intended to be played – I don’t care where we finish in the league, I don’t care about trophies – I just want that to continue.

    *rant finished*

  182. Wenger Out

  183. Malaysiangunner,

I fear that you are right about the squad depth – look at my numerous posts on this topic.

However, the transfer window is shut and we are not getting any new players. I don’t like it any more than you do but there is not much point focusing on it as nothing will change.

We have to hope that we don’t pick up many injuries and that one of the CM’s does a Flamini.

Its far from ideal but what else can we do?

  184. LOL

  185. Big Al,

What about all the Tiltles we won by playing solid and defensive under Graham?

Do them Titles embarrass you? Maybe we didnt deserve them

  186. Have to feel sorry for Shaun Wright Phillips. He eats humble pie after four years and returns to the homely little City only to wake up the next morning and find they won’t be needing his services after next week. Mark Hughes’s days must be numbered as well – can’t see him handling a bunch of attacking flimsy Brazilians. I reckon he’ll go to Newcastle in January where he’ll get on like a house on fire with Joey Barton. City have just announced their next targets: Ronaldo, Cesc, Torres.

I told you last week they would be pressing us for fourth place. Alas, I was wrong.

  187. Big Al,

Big respect for the positive vibe but if we don’t win trophies or if we don’t finish high up enough in the League players will leave and the style of football will go with them.

Success and players are linked and ours are good enough to go elsewhere if our ambitions or success does not meet their expectations.

This is why we need to be competitive, especially since we don’t pay the highest wages. We don’t want to be perceived as a club where you learn your trade and then leave for one of the so-called Big Boys.

  188. September 1st 2008. The day the Wenger empire started to collapse. We all laughed when Abramovich bought Chelsea we are not laughing now the Arabs at Man City are even richer.

  189. We haven’t finished high enough in the league for the past 4 years. If the papers are to be believed, we’re hemorrhaging players, but the beautiful football remains. It’s something that doesn’t ever seem to go missing under Wenger.

Aynway, a rant’s a rant. They never hold up well to scrutiny.

  190. Well said, Big Al:

“Watching Arsenal inspires me as much when we finish 4th as it did when we won the league. I can’t imagine how anyone could witness Saturday’s football and still have the heart to say “Wenger Out”. In fact I challenge them to do that.”

  191. Big Al, Luke,

All these “Wenger out” idiots have 2 things in common

    1. They are wrong
    2. They never say who will replace him.

If you want Wenger out, please say who is out there who will do a better job.

  192. Well, we have the squad we have and it looks like a very good one. However, if it is true we were haggling over Alonso late last night it seems rather silly to have left it that late just for a couple of million. I KNOW, I wouldn’t mind having a couple of million; but in the scheme of running a football club, it does seem like that deal could have been done.

  193. Perhaps there’s a chance that the changing climate in football won’t be accepted as “the way things are going” in the future. This era could eventually be looked back upon with shame by the fans of the clubs that sold out to the wealth accumulators. I’d like to see it resisted as long as possible.

If Chelsea or City (or Manu to a lesser extent) win the league, their fans may celebrate; it may hurt the Arsenal fans who care about bragging rights, but in the end the success is devalued. The bottom-line will always be that they more-or-less bought their trophies. And with money they never had.

    That very idea is anti-sport.

If we win in the near future, just think how sweet the success will be knowing that we achieved it on our own steam, through good management at all levels and with good football. That thought’s enough to keep my faith in the board and with Arsene Wenger.

(another rant – and I’m always worried about going into finances)

  194. I’m so sad today.
Not because of the lack of signing at Arsenal, but because of what is happening with the football (Mancity).

It seems that while we mere mortals are playing fantasy football on the web, these guys are playing fantasy football for real with real living players at their disposal. Cesc is on their shopping list now, and so is TH surely in the January transfer window. What hope does the teams in the lower league have? What’s the point of teams like middlesborough?
I’ve become an Arsenal support for their style of football, and the more I watch them, the more I love them. I’ll be behind the team, whether or not they make a siging we want, until the time arsenal becomes another milionnaire’s toy.

  195. What is more worrying is how to prevent a future hollowing out of this squad by the availability of huge transfer fees and wages (funded by rich club owners) to turn the heads of our best players like Fabregas, Clichy, Sagna, v Persie, Nasri, etc. However that is a story for the future transfer windows

  196. Arse21,

I loved it when we won ugly under GG. Of course we deserved the titles. My first season as a fan old enough to appreciate football was when we won the cup double in ‘93.

Here the thing for me though: I believe that more pleasure can be derived from a moderately successful season under Wenger than a championship winning campaign under Graham.

I know the prem’s become a global phenomenon since the GG days, but we sure as hell weren’t selling out at Highbury under GG when we weren’t winning titles. No trophies for 3 years under Wenger and Emirates still packed in over 50k on essentially a nothing game last Wednesday. We’re always entertaining.

That’s a decent sign that entertaining football is as good for the long term future of a club as a quick trophy.

OK, I’m going to give it a rest now.

  197. Alex

Even if every member of the squad signs for Man City in January the style will remain – the style belongs to Wenger, not to the players.

That said if enough of the Wenger out brigade call for his head…

I remember the tail end of GGs rein when myself and my father began to think maybe it was time for him to go. A hell of alot of soul searching went on – we felt we were betraying the club, betraying Georges record. The current situation doesnt begin to be comparable, and I would wager, seriously wager that the vast majority of fans who are anti Wenger were not around to watch GGs last days, let alone before that.

  198. YOGI PLEASE COME BACK DONT BE TOO DEPRESSED THAT WE SIGNED NO ONE WE MISS YOU

  199. Transfers are rarely as easy as what some are making it out to be. Remember, some players are quite happy where they are, and even if Arsenal want to sign them, they may decline the offer.

Not all players run after better deals at other clubs, or even the chance to play in the PL/CL. Factors like language, culture, family etc. (even the weather!) can have a big influence. These days even the “physical” nature of the PL can deter players.

Sometimes a club can simply refuse to sell to a big rival like Robinho to Chelsea/Heinze to Liverpool.

A lot of comments today are about Arsene gambling with the team, but the other side of the argument is gambling on an overpriced player that is not guaranteed to settle or meet expectations. I think he chose, according to the facts available and his vast experience, the lesser of two evils.

  200. “What about all the Titles we won by playing solid and defensive under Graham?”

People seem to not know that GG’s side only became particularly defensive after his 2 league championships, during which we scored over 70 goals in both seasons.

Yes, they could play tight but rarely set out to just defend & hope to nick one.

The league winning sides had Rocky, Paul Davis, Michael Thomas, Smudger & the Merse etc. All good attacking players.

We lost that spark after the EC defeat against Benfica & the long ball to Ian Wright, became the fashion.

Incidentally we conceded more goals in 88/89 than last season & I don’t recall anyone saying Steve Bould & Tony Adams couldn’t play together.

They only conceded 18 goals in 90/91 though.

Man City (or whoever it may have been) as the new Chelsea is too depressing to give serious thought to, at the moment.

The game we love is on borrowed time, I feel for all genuine football fans.

  201. What about Appiah? I’m still hoping…even better then Alonso …he’s free:)

you can see his moves here:)

  202. i think it’s the scary sky sports news music that has made everyone go a bit nuts.

we should get king kev in to replace arsene.
he’s looking for a new job it seems.

  203. Good idea – and i can just see Usmanov in one of those “King Kev 1″ shirts, necking a couple of pints of Fermented Uzbek goats urine

PS Has our greatest fan been sighted at any games yet this season?

  204. ALEX maybe I was stupid to stay up, but after so much criticism here for Wengerspin name I decided to believe what was said and I thought the midfield would be strengthened, Now I realize it was all BS.

MANCITY wont be a real force till after January as Robhinho will take time to adapt to EPL thugs but at 180K a week do you think EGO would be loyal?

  205. ALEX AND FLINT How do you feel about our midfield.

    Cesc, Nasri, GREAT

    Song good

Denilson not any good in defense.

    Ebuoe completely inconsistent

Diably inconsistent bad tackler, and injury prone.

Rosicky very good but very injury prone

Vela will be up there with Nasri

Walcott is a puzzle OK against inferior backs but when he comes up against experience speed is not enough.

  206. I couldnt care any less about the lack of signings as we have some great talent along with some of players getting healthy.

I could understand why it would be hard to get Alonso. Liverpool spend a load of money for a little above common players and believe that others teams should do so when they want their players.

We have enough players, they may not be as experienced as we would like but players as there. Many say Ramsey cannot play now but as I have always said he played well against PL clubs in the FA Cup so why is it he cant play now. Oh, sorry I forgot, after you watch a player once or maybe twice it enough to evaluate them for a whole season.

Dont we remember that many of our youth have played in the CC where they held their own against PL first teams? Our players are good enough. Lets us stop worrying about who is being bought by who and how much money they have and focus on the most talented team in the league, Arsenal.

Once more, I dont care, I am as happy today to be an Arsenal as I was before the end of the transfer period!!!

    Stay positive!!

    God Bless!!!

  207. Its common knowledge amongst media that in the next year Fizzy and Lady Nina want to sell Kroenke is not the answer hes more like Randy Lerner, Usmanov is a pariah, so the board should look at the name on our stadium and shirts and around the ground and do a deal with DIC that would assure our future

  208. PAUL we do have great players but dont you think money will tempt them? I dont think a team of Galacticos that City want to do will work, but most players are mercenaries,

Ramsay is fine for the CC and as subat home games but at this stage I dont fancy him on a cold night up north

  209. APPIAH is a free agent and we should take a chance justt like we did with Silvestre

  210. We still should have bought Corluka, he wasn’t expensive. AIC, he’s not a right back, he’s really a centre back and defensive midfielder. We could have bought him or Kompany as a solid DM.

  211. one thing good with the lower clubs like city comin up means we wont need as many points as last term to win the league…

  212. I’m stunned about the new craze for Corluka. Corluka is too slow to play for Arsenal at RB or CB. He’s good in terms of ball intelligence but has no pace. Why did ManCity offloaded him to Spurs? They don’t want him as they already have Kompany, Ben Haim, Richards, Dunne etc.

  213. “The game we love is on borrowed time, I feel for all genuine football fans.”

    I agree Flint.

  214. I don’t believe money is the only thing. Ronaldo, Torres and Cesc won’t go to City whatever they’re offered. Ronaldo only wants to play for Real; Cesc won’t leave unless Wenger goes or when we lose our CL place, in which case he’ll be heading for Barca. Don’t know about Torres but I can’t see him – or anyone much – wanting to work with Mark Hughes.

Jo is a terrific player but I don’t think Robinho will settle. He’s probably horrified at what’s happened, the idiot, and refusing to unpack.

In the short term, therefore, i.e. this season, I think City are a threat to us and to Liverpool but probably not to Chelsea or even ManU. In the longer term, however…

Yesterday they said they’d pay 60 million per player; today they’ve upped it 120. Tomorrow 240? I don’t doubt they’ll have surpassed Chelsea in a couple of seasons, and left everyone else as also-rans. As Sol pointed out, these people have succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams with horse-racing, despite massive snobbery and scepticism at first.

The interesting thing now is whether UEFA will move.

  215. Right now is the time we stop moaning and get on with supporting Arsenal. You are a Gooner, pick yourself up and stop crying. The more you look on the dark side of things, the harder you’ll make it for yourself. Whether you agree with what Wenger says or not, he is the Arsenal manager and deserves your utmost support. From Arsene through to the players through to the fans, together we are all Arsenal. Just because we’re a top 4 club doesn’t mean everything is always going to be dandelions and roses, and knowing this should never effect your support. Never make the mistake of thinking the grass is greener on the other side, you can’t support your team only when they’re winning. You wouldn’t go to a match and stand there with your arms folded for 90 minutes so don’t go into a season tutting and expecting the worst. It’s time to look on the bright side of things and let the football do the talking.

We’ve lost Jens Lehmann, a goalkeeper approaching the end of his career who was not an integral part of our squad last season and didn’t play much. So what.

We’ve lost Aliaksandr Hleb, who was an integral part of our squad last season, technically gifted but not the greatest goal scorer. Ok.

We’ve lost Gilberto, who was not an integral part of our squad last season, didn’t play much and looked way past him prime. Best of luck and thanks for everything, ‘Bert.

We’ve lost Justin Hoyte, who was not an integral part of our squad last season, didn’t play much and didn’t add much to the squad overall. Good luck with your career, Justin.

We’ve lost Flamini, who was an integral part of our squad last season and the only real big loss for us this summer. Too bad you were a money-grabbing ****, Flam.

We’ve brought in Samir Nasri, who is technically gifted, has an eye for goal, and is a proper winger. An improvement on Hleb.

We’ve got Eboue, Denilson, Djourou, Song and Walcott who are all IMPROVED players or improving from last season.

We’ve got Silvestre who will provide good cover at defense, and Vela who will strengthen our strike force.

We’ve got Diaby returning from injury who should be expected to play a more senior role in midfield, and Denilson on his heels to ensure that there is good competition. We’ve got Eduardo and Rosicky eventually returning from injury to bolster the squad further. We’ve got fingers crossed for van Persie going a whole season uninjured.

We’ve still got Adebayor despite Barcelona and AC Milan playing tug of war with him throughout THE WHOLE SUMMER.

We’ve got the best full-backs in the league, i’ve got Clichy 22 on the back of my shirt and so should you.

We’ve got Cesc, we’ve got Cesc, we’ve got Cesc and you better be thankful for that.

And we’ve got the whole season ahead of us, so perk up and be proud to be a Gooner. Things really aren’t that bad at all.

Hey, maybe this could be our year…

  216. way to go BigAl/ Flint…

    Forever arsenal!!

  217. After the news sunk in and I managed to smile at the mayhem of it all, I can honestly say that the Man City madness has done nothing more than strengthen my resolve as an Arsenal supporter and strengthen my support for Arsene Wenger. :)

If there exists only one manager in the world that can prove that money isn’t the only route to silverware, then he’s the one, and we are so very lucky to be able to call him our club’s manager.

    Long may he reign.

  218. Very good post Blackstock. I agree with your thoughts on the players we still have. We all would have liked a midfield signing but it wasn’t to be so let’s move on.

  219. blacksotck,

this is going to be our year.

    up the gunners

  220. It is all hype, money, big name players, oil rich owners with nothing else to do with their money (The money Chel$ki spent in three years can feed Africa for 30 years)

The team that will win the title is a the team who will give the most on the pitch for a long season. That said, there are also many other factors: injuries, wrong refereeing decisions, luck, etc…You can buy and have all the players you want and lose a title or win nothing in a season.

**Let’s support what we have, and sheer them on to do better not boo them. We created the monster and now we fear it, we can’t consistently show no confidence in our team and expect them to do good?**

**We have to stop saying they’re not good enough, we are helping the enemy pundits, the media, and rivals to attack us and make us believe we are not good enough.**

**We have to stop saying that teams up north will kick us off the park and expect that they don’t. We are telling them to kick us off the park, we should say we will beat them no matter what they do instead for a change!**

I still think we will win a trophy this year.

  221. Blackstock, sol, Malaysian, everyone

I have been one of the more vociferous bloggers with regards to strengthening the squad but the window is shut so that’s that.

We now have to get behind the team and focus on the positives.

We have Cesc, the uncrowned king of world football. With him in the team who knows what we can achieve?

  222. We’ve got Blackstock!!!!!!!!YEAH!!!! Well said…but I agree with solgooner about Appiah. If he’s a free agent..why not!

    AW & AFC forever!

  223. Blackstock. Great post. We’re all behind the team, win or lose. Let’s see how they fare against Blackburn and Bolton.

  224. mia: “I don’t think Robinho will settle. He’s probably horrified at what’s happened, the idiot, and refusing to unpack.”

I am still in shock that Robinho agreed to join City. I always said neither Dinho nor Robinho would come to England. The only time I wavered in that belief was when Felipao was confirmed for Chelsea. I thought possibly one of them (and only one) might consider going to England and working under a manager they both love and respect — and they’d be coming to London, which might not be as sunny and warm as Barca/Madrid but at least it’s not Manchester where they’d be bored out of their minds after leaving Barca/Madrid.

NO WAY, NO WAY, NO WAY did I ever believe either one of them would go to any place in England other than London — and only then because of Felipao. And CERTAINLY not to a club like City. Their egos wouldn’t allow it. Dinho and his agent sent City for a ride early in the summer, making noises about being open to City’s offer, but it was always meant as part of their campaign to move him to Milan.

I can’t for the life of me understand how Robinho would agree to play for City, to go to Manchester, to play for….Mark Hughes. No, sorry, money just isn’t enuf to explain it, tho it helps. I know enuf about Robinho to disbelieve that it was only about money. He’s got a massive ego–Dinho never once considered playing for City, believing it to be a club beneath his talents. Robinho has the same attitude.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that he was that desperate and that angry to leave Real. He was trashed for his press conference–rightly I suppose–but I was too shocked to take any outrage over it. It’s not the kind of thing he does, it just proved that he was fed up with Real enuf to attack the club in public. I think he reasoned that this City move may be a stopgap measure, he’ll stay awhile and start maneuvering for another transfer soon.

I can’t see Robinho enjoying life in Manchester or life in the PL. It’s just not his style or speed. Maybe he’ll shock me again and somehow adjust. But it’ll be a MAJOR personality change if he does.

City do look like a strong team now but frankly Robinho does not frighten me. Robinho can be controlled and made quiet, and our young players are very capable of doing it. They did it in pre-season. It really doesn’t take a lot, I’ve seen opposing teams do it too often.

Still, he, Elano, Petrov, Ireland, and Jo will be a handful for some teams — and SWP looks like gaining back his confidence. They look like a terrific team to watch from a neutral’s perspective, except that they have a thug for a manager whose thuggery will affect his team’s playing style.

blackstock: “We’ve still got Adebayor despite Barcelona and AC Milan playing tug of war with him throughout THE WHOLE SUMMER.”

I never believed Milan were genuinely after Ade — it was all a hoax and part of their campaign to get Dinho. At any rate, neither Barca nor Milan thought Ade worth what he and his agent thought he was worth.

sol, go back to writing “wengerspin” — “wengerxxxx” is more annoying. Anyway, given today’s hard reality of our club’s non-activity in the transfer market, your cynicism is merited, tho it pains me to say it.

I’ve been waiting for today to judge what I think our chances are for any success in the 08-09 seaon. I know the arsenalblog universe are all in suicide mode, and I wish I could differ with them. All respect to those who can still remain positive. Maybe as time goes on I’ll change my perspective. I can only express what I’m feeling today, and it isn’t due to any influence from media hype and punditry, I haven’t read any of their coverage of Arsenal.

The truth is, I fear for this season. I don’t even hope for trophies now, all I hope for is that we stay in the top 4. It very much pains me to say that because you can’t find a greater admirer and defender of AW than me. But I truly don’t comprehend his actions (or non-action) this summer.

It’s not that I think he didn’t try for at least one player. There were reports about a last minute bid for Alonso, there were also reports about his attempt to resurrect the Inler deal. Felipao even said that he tried for Kalou. I also believe he tried for Veloso. None of his attempted moves panned out for whatever reason.

I do think he tried to bring in more players, I just don’t think he was as urgent about it as he should’ve been. If we were a club like Wigan or Boro or Everton, then I could believe that the manager’s limited resources and the club’s stature limited his transfer moves. But this is AW and this is Arsenal we’re talking about. I can’t for one moment believe that he couldn’t strengthen our squad–he did have some money to work with. He didn’t need a lot. And he had 4 months to do it in.

I can’t help but wonder if our recent hemmorahging of clerical/executive staff has affected AW’s transfer window activity.

I also think that fans do have a right to be upset about AW’s umet promises of bringing in players.

The fact is that this team did not need a lot to improve from last season, that’s what hurts. It feels like we’ve gone backward, not forward.

None of the above changes the fact that I will support the team all season long. But I go into the 08-09 season for the first time during AW’s reign wondering about his basic competence as a manager, and bracing myself for finishing outside the top 4.

  225. “I also think that fans do have a right to be upset about AW’s *umet promises of bringing in players.

    * – unmet

  226. Great stuff Big Al & Flint today. Please take a bow.

I`m strangely relieved that we never made a late signing or two & remained out of that circus yesterday.

As Davebluez said it strengthens your resolve as an Arsenal fan.

The City thing is making me heave & with Fergie kidnapping Berbatov you have to wonder where it will end.

I agree with Mia about EUFA – this could be one mega-takeover too many.

Get ready for a salary cap in the next year or so.

  227. Christ, what a trial the last 24 hours have been for all of us. I’ve personally gone from tremendous anger at what I felt were broken promises, to tremendous pride at the response of so many supporters, and in general, the approach of our football club.

I think we all have various gripes of differing varieties, but how brilliant if we can just laugh this Man City nonsense off and say f*ck ‘em, we’re Arsenal, we’re beyond billions, we don’t need to play top trumps with footballers in order to be satisfied as supporters.

Money is temporary, class is permanent. Being the poster boys for morality isn’t a bad position to be in, it may eventually win us the admiration of an entire generation – if we can win the league, an unparalled glory awaits I promise.

Arsene, you’re one hell of a stubborn bugger, but I love yer. Come on you gunners!!!!

  228. NY Marcus

Feel free to expand your opinions

  229. We should be glad that the Abu Dhabi group din take over Man CIty, a month back. Things would be looking pretty different now, if that had happened. Maybe Ronaldinhio might have joined. And imagine what other players they would have tried to buy.

Well the fact is that it didnt happen, but 4 months from now expect the unexpected as far as city signings are concerned. It would have been fun though to imagine what Wenger would have done with a 200m budget, who he would try to get and setup his team with unlimited funds. But then again, that wont be Wenger right? Im not pleased with us not signing anyone, but im not dissapointed either. I think Diaby, Song, Denilson can manage atleast till january. Although a signing would have been great, but that too if wenger would have pulled an unknown player out of the hat that none of us would have heard of. And seeing him turn into a star.

Anyways we have Nasri for that now. Not a doom scenario, I still believe we can push f or the title, regardless of the lack of experience. Pray for an injury free season, and we’d be fine with Rosiscky, Eduardo, and Diaby to return. Diaby and Rosiscky should be returning in the next 2-3 weeks.

  230. Right on Blackstock – you’ve said it all there. Too many people are more concerned with keeping up with the joneses rather than focusing on what we already have. And we have some fabulously talented players who are capable of playing the most breathtakingly beautiful football in Europe. That is what I choose to focus on.

  231. Big Al@ 3:42

I totally aggree with the point youve made. If we had bought 5 big name players in the summers and won the league, I wouldnt be happy.Probably indifferent. Yah sure on paper they’d be arsenal players, but we know who the real arsenal players are. Plus it would really degrade what Wengers been tryna do for the past few years.

  232. NYmarcus

the c hances of us finishing outside the top 4 are almost nil. Which team do you think is strong enough to challenge the top 4? MAn city, just because they 5 decent players or totenham because of the same reasons?

Arsenal has an excellent squad. Dont buy the crap that we lack experience. How does one give meaning to something intangible. How many games makes a player experienced? Most of our players have been playing for seasons. I dont wanna go into detail of every player that have experience, but doing the other way around would be easier. Denilson, Walcott, Vela? Out of these Denilson has had a fair share of games last season, and has been playing since the pre s eason. Vela played a whole season in Spain last year. Walcott is improving. We lack steel in the middle of the park, but that is no reason to fall off the top 4. I think we’re good enough to challenge for one trophy atleast. And I wouldnt have made this comment a month back, but Eboue is turning out to be quite decent. I’m not judging this from the backflip in the last game, but from the role he’s played s ince the pre-season.

There is a different between keeping your expectations high and being hopeful. Go for the latter if the former doesnt suit you. But dont be too pessimistic, to actually write us off the 4th position.

  233. NYmarcus,

I agree with a lot of what you say especially about the unkept promises but now that the transfer window is over – that’s it. I wish AW would keep his mouth shut over transfer as most of what he says is rubbish and I have learnt to ignore it.

I have gone on about out transfer paralysis weeks ago as I was never confident that we would get the players we need. This is not a new problem; under GG we often suffered the same fate in the summer.

This is all done now though and we have to hope for few injuries and some players doing a Flamini.

Even Eboue is playing better this season and if he can improve let’s hope that some others do the same. Nasri looks amazing already and Cesc is back.

We’ll still be in the top 4.

  234. Marcus Alex…..In the top 4?

    We’ll challenge of the title!

  235. Ateeb, I’m not writing us off from the top 4, I’m saying we will have to fight hard to stay in the top 4.

The reason I say that is because we have not strengthened. I’m well aware of the talented players in our squad, I’m aware a lot of them will have last season as further experience. However–three things stick out for me:

    * at the moment I’m not convinced by our midfield options to allow Cesc to play at his best. That could change as the options we have there step up like Flamini did but right now I don’t see much evidence of it. If AW had chosen Song as a first choice CM, I’d be more positive.

    * I do not believe we can credibly hope for more luck with injuries, I’m sorry, I just don’t believe it. We’ve already seen the whole cycle start again, with Silvestre, Senderos before he left, Cesc, Diaby out injured (and Cesc worryingly brought back too early for a pre-season game, resulting in an injury). Last season if we did not have Cesc (or if he were not in form), I would not be too worried. This season I am very very worried if Cesc gets injured.

This is not a stronger squad from the one we had last season. We lost two critical midfielders and a veteran who provided cover. Even if we’d kept all those players, the team still needed strengthening and we’d have a helluva challenge for trophies this season with our rivals strengthening. But I believed we could do it. That’s what the lesson was from last season’s collapse: build on what we already have.

As it is, those players who’ve left have barely been replaced.

The other thing that concerns me is AW’s record after major summer tournaments. We’ve won 1 trophy only during AW’s reign after a major summer tournament: the 2005 FA cup.

Given referees who routinely allow teams to rough up our players with impunity, this team needs to be ruthless and absolutely clinical in front of goal in order to win trophies. To help develop that ruthlessness and directness, I thought that AW would strengthen the squad with a couple of experienced players, as he said he would. He hasn’t.

I’m not saying it’s impossible for us to win trophies this season. But at the moment, I’ll be ecstatic if we win the CC and FA cup. I can’t see this team winning anything bigger.

  236. Alex, I like your pragmatic attitude, I agree, we just have to accept it and move on. I’m just expressing my response to the disappointment of waking up this morning and checking the official site to see no signings announced.

I enjoyed our game at Newcastle and loved how Eboue and RVP played so well — naturally, in the very game RVP finally improved his performanced after a poor start to the season, he was injured and had to be subbed. No surprise there.

But it’s the away games at places like Bolton that worry me. We can turn it on at home (tho not always) but away at Blackburn? Wigan?

  237. HOw did we do against Bolton and Balackburn last season? I don’t remember….

  238. NYmarcus

You can’t see the team winning anything bigger than CC and FA? For what reason? Nobody gave us a chance last season but for AW’s ‘arrogance’ in January, refusing to fill gaps caused by injuries and ACN games, we would have won the title.

  239. I cant understand how a player who arguably played for the most famous club in the world who openly said he wanted to play for Chelsea and yet signs at the last minute for an average EPL club like Man City.
This is typical of how the game is going with players only interested in one thing, how much they can fill their pockets.
The greed is unbelieveable with no respect for the fans or anybody.
I must agree with Flint and despair that the game i knew and loved is sadly going down the toilet.
The Arabs are taking it to somewhere where the man on the street cannot identify with, i sincerely hope im wrong.

  240. NYmarcus,

I think I was one of the few who was not that disappointed this morning but this was only due to low expectations.

We are playing Blackburn away soon, so you’ll have your answer.

Maybe AW will rotate Denilson and Song in CM, maybe Diaby as well if he’s ever fit. AW said Song couldn’t play in CM for 40 games so maybe they’ll share the job. I admit to not being too convinced by this but this is what we have.

I know we bought no-one apart from balloon-head but at least we don’t have to listen to AW’s rubbish regarding transfers until at least January!

  241. G4E: “HOw did we do against Bolton and Balackburn last season? I don’t remember….”

We did quite well against them, we may still this season…my point is that to win trophies this season we have to be STRONGER than we were last season.

To do better than last season, we had to build on what we already had.

That meant keeping the squad we had AND strengthening.

That hasn’t happened. Instead, we’ve lost key players and barely replaced them. We haven’t built on what he had last season at all — except, I grant you, some added experience from last season.

We may well finish 3rd this season, like last season. And that’s it. Because we do not have a stronger squad from last season. The only thing that could change from last season is if we are lucky with injuries and referees. That’s what we’re all banking on if we’re to win trophies.

  242. Vet, it doesn’t sound good singling the Arabs, what about Russians and every one else. What about the English that allowed this to happen in England, the place where football was born?

Why just blame the players for being greedy, how about the people paying them? They’re thinking of making money too without regard for any values whatsoever.

It is the misfortune of humanity, inflected upon itself by humans. Money became everything, and people now brag about buying their way through any thing that stands in the way.

I’m not sure why Wenger is arrogant, the poor now is the arrogant, and the rich is not arrogant? The people who are spending 300 million are not arrogant? Telling everybody else F*ck you, we will buy anything that moves? Who is arrogant, paying 21 million for SWP, then selling him for 9 just because they didn’t want any body else to have him?

    Give me a break.

  243. we beat Bolton 3-2 after being 2 down and down to 10 men when Diaby was sent off.

We drew with Blackburn 1-1 but should have won until Jens threw one into his own net!!!

  244. Alex: “at least we don’t have to listen to AW’s rubbish regarding transfers until at least January!”

True, but we’ll still have to listen to him point to injuries and luck for bad results.

Howard: “Nobody gave us a chance last season but for AW’s ‘arrogance’ in January, refusing to fill gaps caused by injuries and ACN games, we would have won the title.”

How has that changed? Maybe AW will strengthen in January this time? Will we be at the top of the league or close to it at the time? You’re assuming that we are just as strong as last season and will achieve the same results, that our rivals will be in the same position as last season too. My argument is that that is highly debatable. But if we are just as strong as last season, we certainly are not STRONGER. And to win trophies, AW had to make us stronger during this transfer window. He had to build on what we had.

    He hasn’t done that.

  245. NYmarcus,

Did you copy and paste your 9.55pm post from one of my old posts as it is identical to what I have written before!

Considering we have had some interesting debates before – with wildly differing views – I find it highly ironic that we have posted almost identical posts.

We should be stronger in defence as Djourou is there and ballon-head will add some experience. We have Vela and Nasri in attack who were not there last year and if RvP can stay fit we will be stronger here. Walcott and Bendtner will have improved (hopefully). We are weaker in CM unless Diaby or Denilson step-up and maybe in goal as Mad Jens has gone.

Also there could have been an organic growth, an evolution in the team after the experience of last season which make it stronger. Cesc may take his game to new levels fueled by his success in the Euros.

  246. Why are Bolton and Blackburn still considered the litmus test for Arsenal? Sure, we had a period where they were our bogie teams, but last year we completely smashed and outplayed them on all fronts. Even our Carling Cup team beat Blackburn. When Bolton came to the Emirates, they got taught a lesson. We have the strength, experience and steel to overpower them now. The likes of Sagna, Djourou, Song, Clichy, Eboue, Fabregas, Diaby and Bendtner are all strong and able to put in a physical performance when needed. They’re not going to get pushed off the ball easily. Even little Nasri showed Barton he’s not one to mess about with on Saturday. Sure, if we line up against them with Ramsey, Denilson, Vela and Rosicky then i’m going to be concerned, but I think overall our squad is now a lot more adaptable than it was before.

Instead of Bolton and Blackburn, the big challenge for us now should be to beat our nearest rivals more convincingly, or at least hold on to a lead against them. Last season we had atrocious slip ups and lapses of concentration against Man United and Chelsea. These were more important than games against Bolton and Blackburn, but where was Lord Flamini Protector Of Arsenal Greatness then? It’s not down to individual players, it’s either tactics or something in the squad mentality. Something which can’t necessarily be solved by simply buying a new player.

  247. :-) Alex, I know, I’m very aware I do sound like you some weeks ago. It is ironic but at the time I genuinely believed AW would strengthen the squad. I didn’t disagree with the essentials of your argument, I just had more belief that AW would do what had to be done. I agreed with you that he should’ve been doing it all earlier on but I was willing to be more patient, knowing how the Euros often affect the timing of the transfer window for all clubs.

I was wrong in my expectations, you were more in tune with what turned out to be the reality. Makes me look like a fool, with my long rants against your posts, but I’ll accept the charge.

I am aware of the possibilities you mention, I too am hoping that the experience from last season will harden the squad, that not only Cesc’s game but other players’ games will step up. I hope for a lot of things — fewer injuries, better luck with referees. But I was expecting to have these hopes starting on Sept. 2nd with a STRENGTHENED squad from last season.

Coquelin’s still the best candidate I’ve seen so far for the DM postion of the players we already have. I so wish he were older.

  248. For all of you who woke up this morning disappointed to find that Santa hadn’t bought you any presents, can I suggest you look back to Saturday – your presents were right before your eyes!

I am so grateful that, in Arsene, we have a manager of principle and honour who has adopted and improved the Arsenal way and stands at the helm of the one shining example of a top rate football club producing beautiful football in a brand new super stadium all achieved with only relatively modest borrowings, fully costed and on course to be repaid. We don’t have a super rich benefactor who could pull out on a whim. Arsene had £30 million at his disposal but chose not to spend it. Good, I say! There was no-one out there who I particularly wanted to sign – not even Alonso who I regard as a only a moderate talent.

The Abu Dhabi purchase of ManCity may represent another nail the coffin of English first class football as we know and love it. I have sympathy with Flint and Veteran on this. I hope very much that Arsenal will not join the rush to find a super rich benefactor and I am comforted by the fact that we have sensible people like Arsene and yes, the much maligned PHW in charge. I am proud of the Arsenal tradition and long may it continue.

To all the doubters, this is the time to get behind the club you love and give the present squad a chance to show that they are easily capable of winning silverware and winning it with style.

  249. Despite all the whohar concerning Man U and Man City, my concerns still remain the same we should have signed a defensive mifielder, that would mean we had adequate cover in CM.

That said AW did say that if we failed to sign he believed in the quality of the squad.

I just hope Denilson and Eboue keep improving as they are doing as we will need them to to last the duration.

I am not convinced about Diaby in CM either attacking or defensively as he ball hoggs and cant tackle, I wish Song were given that role becuse for me his game is perfect for that position nice and simple and the physique & tackling abilty to handle those tough away games we all dread.

I hope we are in touching distance come the jan window where we would be stupid not to strengthen in midfield.

  250. Well you’ve certainly changed your tune NYmarcus. What makes you think we aren’t stronger than last season? All the players are a year older and a year more experienced as individuals and at playing together as a team. The disappointment of missing out on the league by 4 points could be the making of them mentally. Flamini is the only key player missing from the first team and I still believe he can be replaced from within the current squad. I agree with Blackstock’s point – Arsenal play a team game and if all the team believe in their talent and get the backing of the fans and ’stick together and fight for each other’ as RVP says, we will be alright.

Maybe you should have listened to Arsene after the Newcastle game when he said ‘expect no one and then if someone comes it will be a pleasant surprise’ then you wouldn’t be so upset now. You are acting like Wenger made you a personal promise and let you down. He made it clear everytime he was asked that he was looking to bring someone in, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. As Arsene pointed out there are at least 3 parties in every negotiation, so a lot can go wrong whatever your original intention. Of the players we were strongly linked with, there were allegedly problems revealed by Inler’s medical, Alonso was very expensive for a player who could not be used in Europe and besides, Liverpool were never going to sell him after they failed to get Gareth Barry. As for Barry, I don’t believe we were ever seriously interested in him other than making noises to push Liverpool into making a move so that it would free up Alonso. Veloso was priced out of a move by his club as he himself pointed out. Interestingly he has not moved either.

  251. NYmarcus – I am with you about Francis Coquelin lets hope he gets some CC exposure.

I wander who we are going to play becuse theplayers i pegged as CC certainties have left on loan in Armand Traore and Nacer Barazite

  252. Add to Passenal:

Gilberto: Played like three games last season and some of us wanted to shoot him for being so slow…so there is no loss there.

Hleb: Was replaced by someone I believe much better than him. We make fun of Eboue’s play acting, Hleb was like a little boy crying whenever someone touch him. At least Nasri got up, didn’t complain and told the Criminal to f* Off.

Flamini: We have Song, Diaby, Denilson and now Eboue…four chances of someone of them making it this season or all of them. Last season we only had Gilberto or Flamini.

    Who else left?

  253. We also forget that there is someone called Bischoff, maybe Wenger saw something in him we don’t know about yet?

  254. cc team:

    Fab

    Gibbs Djourou Song Agogo
    Walcott Ramsey Randall Wilkshire
    Simpson Vela

  255. MARCUS ALEX MIA. Well we have to get on with what we have.

MARCUS Lpool are far worse than us, and I believe we should finish in top four if we have luck and no injuries we can do well in the ECL.

The midfield should have Song as a key part of midfield so Cesc can get forward Denislon is good attacking but his defensive skills are way down

We have a great CC team and with luck there we could do well.

All I ask is that there is no more Bullshit PR and lies.

We know AW is a great manager but there are new realities and if we dont progress Cesc will go, so we have to wait and see after we win our next four games it will be an indication of the future.

WE MUST NEVER AGAIN HAVE A MIDFIELD OF RAMSEY EBUOE AND RAMSAY.UNLESS ITS IN THE CC

  256. REMI No way should Cesc be risked in a CC game its bad enough he has to play 50 plus games without the CC. BEACUE WE HAVE NO CREATIVE PLAYERS LIKE HIM EXCEPT ROSICKY WE CANT AFFORD HIM TO BE INJURED AS WE GRIND TO AHALT

  257. G4E you make excellent comments, i wasnt being detrimental to the Arabs only to observe that they are the latest to take the game to a new planet.

I totally agree with Kelsey Skirton, im so proud of our club in how its handled and what it stands for.

IM PROUD TO BE A GOONER !

  258. Solgooner I think he means fabianski

  259. Hi Vet, I just meant to add to the Arabs all the others that came prior to them…
You have a great and positive attitude and I hope we will be rewarded for our patience.

  260. Arsene knows…

(something that we all don’t), and

    Asene doesn’t know…

    (what everybody knows).

    Let’s move on.

  261. Passenal

Whatever we said about our young players improving after a season will only be panned out on the pitch and not in these blogs. We have mixed evidence between the first 3 games and the last 2 games.

NYmarcus do have a point in terms of we needing to improve from last season. Manures added Berbatov and if he fulfill his potential will add goals and Spuds added a lot more but showed no eveidence other than the last game against Chel$ki that they have improved. Chel$ki has improved over last season. Pool again mixed.

We are not arguing that our first team is not up to challenging this season just that when we do not have Cesc we are a few rung lower in our play. The last two games we have Cesc. If that is not the case for strengthening I am not sure what it? and we did not take this window to do so.

That said there is always hope that our injured from last season player will come back and be less prone to injuries. I am sure that is what AW is hoping for when he decided not to pay up for Alonso.
As I always say it is a gamble on the evidence so far.

THat is all over now. And there is no point debating it until January. Lets move on.

As Flint/Paul and Paulie N and the rest says, lets get behind the team. There is always hope and we will leave the final debate on AW’s decisions come Jan and the end of this season. The way we played against Newcastle and Twente does give hope and lets enjoy the new season for the promise and the enjoyment that the way we play brings.

Despite all the misgivings I am actually quite excited about the new season, we are about the most principled club in the EPL, playing exquisite football and mind you with luck we will challenge the monied clubs of Manchester, pool and the blue Russian.

Up The Arse! Up The Arse! Up The Arse! Come on you Gunners!!!!

  262. Well if you actually think of it, If we have all out midfielders fully fit, arsene might actually have selection problems. True that we are lacking a solid anchor man but Denilson i think has shown flashes of what he is capable of and we can only hope he flowers soon. Diaby for me is a second choice to denilson, but the between eboue and rosicky, it is very tricky. Despite rosicky being miles ahead in terms of his skill and tactical advantage, arsene knows something about eboue’s vitality as a cog in the arsenal wheel that us fans don’t recognise…
    Remember, ‘Arsene Knows..’

  263. Malaysiangunner

    Those who have: flaunt it

Those who don’t, like Arsenal: are principled

  264. Luke

When we win the title with our relatively miniscule outlay compared to all the ocean of money spent then we shall judge. Just look at our balance sheet and then our style and panache on the field, you guys are new rich with no class. Just throwing money at the any problem, any idiot can run a a club like that even you.

    Up The Arse!!!

  265. Those who have it: Flaunt it like “Idiots”

Those who don’t have it but flaunt it anyways are a compound of “Idiots” + “Stupid” = Man Ure

Those who have it, but chose not to flaunt it are “Arsenal” because they’re true to principals.
