Time For Action

In the aftermath of the Fulham defeat, Arsene opined,

Of course I am frustrated but when you lose a game it is not always the solution to buy

If his gut reaction had been to open the chequebook, he is right. It would have been a kneejerk reaction and one that ought to provoke great concern amongst the support. Panic buying suggests a loss of faith in his players, something that would have gone against his grain. However, in this instance, it seems to be Arsene clouding two entirely separate issues.

The defeat on Saturday is something that can be worked on during training sessions. The signing of a midfielder is an altogether different matter, a subject that the manager has regularly talked of in the past month. Indeed, been specific about in press conferences where if he was not inclined to take such a course of action, he would not have spoken about Barry or prior to the first leg against FC Twente, specified a time scale for making a purchase.

Any incoming player though should not be to silence discontent; it must only be if that player is going to fulfil a role in the team that no-one else can. There is little point in signing a young player, with less than one hundred games unless Arsene knows that there is a Patrick Vieira Mark II arriving. Even then, can he afford to take the risk?

The problem is the conflicting messages coming out of the club, fuelling dissension. Arsene comments that he needs a centre back and buys one; observes that he needs a midfielder and then backtracks. Is it price that is putting him off? ‘Resale value‘ is a phrase that crept out recently. Why is he worrying about that for an experienced player? This is the core to the conflict. Edelman, Fiszman and Hill-Wood have all sought to allay fears that the new stadium would restrict transfer funding; Arsene is behaving as if he has zero funds despite balancing the books this summer. What is the truth? More funding will be coming by the impending sale of Senderos to AC Milan once the loan period expires.

The infuriating aspect of all this is that Arsene has a good squad to build upon. He simply needs to add one midfielder with experience and he will be in a decent starting position. Remaining issues are of form that Arsene can deal with on the training pitch; ongoing it is focussing on defence. He needs to get a defensive coach in situ, in the same way that Keown was a couple of years back. Let them get on with dealing with the defensive principles, Arsene can manage and deal with the issues further forward.

He has told us that the club is not close to signing anyone. It has been this way since the end of last season, according to the manager’s press utterances. I hope that is him simply trying to cool the media fervour for signings, especially after last week. FC Twente pitch up at The Emirates tomorrow, the timeline Arsene put on signing a midfielder. My concern would be that the deadline closes on midnight next Monday and no-one is incoming.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. If we don’t sign anyone, we’re shit out of luck. I was with the AKB group for a while, but it is getting ridiculous now. We’re losing so much depth, counting on a few inexpirenced players and hoping Cesc recovers and doesn’t get injured. No way we win the title…Champions League you never know, but this isn’t a team built for the long haul of a season.

  2. Basically we have Clichy, Sagna, Cesc, Nasri and Adebayor we can count on to be top level players. After that, too many question marks. Rosicky is probably never going to play again, Gallas sucks balls, Toure hasn’t been playing well but may improve once he gets over the malaria, do we even have a DM? Our other strikes have been MIA…I thought RVP would be top class and score 15-18 goals, which may still happen, but he looks a shell of his former self…seems like watching his Sneider take wild 30 yard kicks in the Euros has got to him…he needs to relax…ALumnia is doing well, but even then, we have 6 players we can count on and 5 big question marks…what’s wrong with Arsene?

  3. Yogi well written dude and i am awake this morning to be one of the 1st to comment on it.

I am not sure that Denilson can have a role in our team should cesc regain full fitness as his tackling and defensive awareness are not yet up to scratch.

Cesc has been speaking about loving to play along side Alonso perhaps he has come to the same conclusion and I am slowly starting to join the Gallas doubting camp, Toure also has not looked his old self for a while.

  4. I must admit, if we don’t sign a midfielder before next week, then for the first time, i will really have to question AW’s judgement.

Saturday proved to everyone who knows even the slightest thing about football that there is no way on this planet we can challenge for honours with Eboue and Denilson as CM players.

I’m sorry to critiscise our own, but that was the worst CM pairing i have seen play for the club for as long as i can remember.

If anyone thinks that Denilson is the answer in the middle, they need their head examined.

We have known since the back end of last season that we need a CH and a CM, and so far we have signed a Hleb replacement, 2 kids and a player who has been injured for 2 years.

We do have to start asking where is our money going???

I fear for this season, i really do.

  5. Excellent piece Yogi as usual, i agree that there is no point buying someone for the sake of it
It needs someone to be better than what we already have and be bought at a sensible price.
The cost of having a Barry or Alonso at the silly prices being touted is dubious given their sell on value and whether they would indeed gel straight away into the way the team plays.
I personally would like Arsene to give either Alex Song or Johan Djourou a go at partnering Cesc as i think they could do just as good a job given the chance.
The big concern is as you have already touched upon is the defence, Gallas deserved his ‘roasting’ in the tabloids at the weekend, and whats worse is his lack of leadership when it was needed.
Tired or not from an exhausting international week there is no excuse from an experienced should know better professional. If he continues like this Arsene might as well give it to Cesc or Kolo as they couldnt do any worse.
Finally a word about Phil who i wish all the very best as i admired him greatly for his determination and loyalty, but sadly at the end of the day was not good enough to play for Arsenal. His Anfield nightmare was probably the straw that broke the Camels back as far as Arsene was concerned.
    Good luck big Phil

  6. I just hope that last line never becomes TRUE! That can be a nightmare for all of us! :|

  7. Matt I am with you wenger better have a master stroke up his sleeves but time is running out and other than song i don’t like any of our in house defensive midfield options.

The problem is wenger has been grooming song to play center back???

  8. Realisation is all what Arsene needs. We have a bunch of we-can-beat the world kids, but they will do that in few years time.Everyone cannot be a Cesc or a PV.Too much burden on their shoulders will surely hinder their development lest we should buy some experince.

Gallas is getting old.He is not the man to lead and if anyone is to be blamed for that its Arsene.Captain should have a cool head, someone who can inspire the team even if when the result is otherwise. We never played for a win at cottege. We just played like we were made to play out of complusion. Its is during this glum mood taht a captain should riase the tempo in the playes on the pitch.

Busy Alonso, apart form the DM role he can cover Cesc when he is tired and groom Djurou to be the beast of the back four.

    Clichy for the armband??

  9. Once more, you’re a voice of reason, Yogi.

I’m sure AW is working on signing a CM/DM. He knows we need one, he has said we’re a body short, as demonstrated by playing a RB/RM there this weekend. That said, it is a bit frustrating that there is seemingly no movement.

Goodbye to Senderos. It didn’t quite work out, despite spells where it genuinly looked like it would.

  10. Poor results happen, the key is to learn from them. Success for this season does not depend upon players we may or may not buy…it depends upon the current squad upping their game and rising to the challenge. They are good enough to do that but we will just have to wait and see whether they respond. One or two emphatic victories will blow the cobwebs away.

  11. We seem to be winding ourselves into a frenzy and it would seem now, even the becalmed Yogi has been effected by the combined culmination of silly-season and an early season loss.

The conflicting messages emanating from the club are not new to this season, you want to sign a player or maybe even two, but also want to give the current players a vote of confidence. The loss of Helb has been off set, by the purchase of Nasri and the arrival of Vela, but it is, still the hole left by one-season Flamini that irks us most.

This void can still be filled from within, that is of course how the emergence of Superstar Flamini came about, so with that in mind, there really can be no loss of confidence in the boss’ ability.

Arsene’s “resale value” quote may have been taken out of context, though with a mind full of economic strategy that is doubtful. What is sure is Wenger would be most against signing a player past his peak in such a key squad role.

My problem, is I have no idea of a player, that would fulfill our requirements, other than those who are totally unavailable. The names mentioned hardly, get the blood flowing. So as choices go, mine is simple, watch and allow the greatest boss in our history work it out or allow my own blood to boil.

  12. It is quite amazing how almost EVERY Gooner blog is of a similar tone

    DEPRESSED TO F*CK!

Wo! It didnt take much did it to turn everyone into doom mongers!

What is going on at the club is unclear to say the least. We have Wenger telling us he has money to spend, would happily splash out £30 mill on 1 player, yet we are crying out for a central midfielder, the prime mover is sitting in the midlands and can be bought for £18 mill, overpriced but not anywherre near the £30 mill mark.

    But then Wenger ueses a phrase that really freaked me out;

When you buy a 27-28 year old, you cannot gwet much money back from them.

How effin f*cked up is that???

Seriously, if that signing is the difference between success and failure, then surely thats some kind of return on your investment no?

Oh well, I STILL live in hope (or is that dreamland?)

  13. Limbo, mate.

    Limbo.

I seriously doubt we’ll sign anyone else, unless it’s an extreme last-minute signing like Diarra last year. This fabled midfield saviour would’ve been done and dusted already by now if Arsene thought it was so necessary. He obviously doesn’t, what can you do. Just getting my seat belt fastened now for another rocky season. Woooo, here we go again.

  14. From Arsenal’s action during the transfer window, something seems not right. either financially we are in a weak, in that revenue fromthe property sales are unsure, or the financial gaurantees for the loans are in danger if being recalled…..etcetc. Gut feeling tells me that something is happening that is restricting our ability to compete in the market. Hope I am totally wrong. Otherwise, why are we a selling club?? We have more revenue and cash flow than most clubs except Chelsea and MU. The directors at the club should come out clean on this matter. The supporters are big enough to accept reality and regularise our expectations accordingly.

  15. I do love how all this has become Gallas’s fault, he doesnt show leadership etc. On Sunday Arseblog ranted about how the players looked at their skipper abjectly as he tried to gee them up before the game, perhaps they should start listening to him.

Or, and i know this is a radical step seeing as they’re all on 40k+ a week, they could actually play for the shirt, for the love of the club, because they are professionals that want to win. Give any of us a shirt for tomorrow night and see if we need inspiration from our captain.

  16. TOO MANY QUESTIONS..

I wish the solution to our problem is as simple as a DM being signed. I dont think it is, the problem goes far more deeper, I suspect.

The signing of silvestre has really put the cat among the pigeons for me as far as my beloved club is concerned. It has really opened the can of worms that were brewing for a long time.

Senderos is finally leaving, I should be jumping for joy at this but I am not, because I have a feeling that silvestre will continue our legacy of lame ducks just as senderos took over from cygan.

Yes, DM is a problem but did the goal we concede against fulham have anything with a DM? the answer is no. Its the same old problem and we refuse to rectify it. The defence still looks the problem and I seriously doubt silvestre is the answer.

Then comes the question of LEADERSHIP, Sorry, gallas is not the leader. And the fact that he is captain is hugely indicative of our problems in this area. Poor performances can be rectified, but what caught my eye was a collective lethargy from the whole team, it seemed none of them knew what they were playing or fighting for.

That concerns me even MORE than the poor performance. What do we have at the heart of our defence now? a second rate chelsea player and a third rate man utd player. The fact that gallas was back up for chelsea but is first choice for us tells us a lot of things regarding the strength of the teams.

I have noted here before that maybe we as arsenal fans were deluded in thinking that we are in for the league or the UCL. maybe we should just be realistic go all out for the f.a. cup and wait till our “finances” are sorted out. I would want some spending but arsene is our manager and we have no choice but to accept what he is doing whether we like it or not. Lets just be a bit HONEST.

why did we cave in to ades demands while we wouldnt budge on flamini and let him go? We have now failed to stay true to both player and principle.

We always have the opinion that chelsea are a mercenary club. Well I have to say, we are more of that than them. Look at all the other three top clubs, whatever we might think of them they all have captains and leaders who are THEIRS through and through. What do we have, Gallas??? I am not sure he should be first choice let alone captain.

Why cant we just buy a quality centre back and if we dont have money, I dont know why we did not take the 20 MILLION+ from chelsea for cashley. We could have got best quality for that money.

I have always defended wenger from the dummies like alan shearer and hansen and through all the issues of english players etc.., and CONTINUE to do so, but I have to say a little bit of grit, heart and passion, british or otherwise, will NOT be out of place in our team.

Lee dixon makes the remark about our leadership issue and I agree with him. He talks about discussing about it with rodders here:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/arsenal/2623758/Call-for-Williams-Gallas-to-be-stripped-of-Arsenal-captaincy—Football.html

Man, how we could do with either of those two boys now..

I apologise in advance to all gunners here for the rather pessimistic post. Despite this, I am still of the opinion that we have to back Wenger and our boys because there is nothing to be gained by calling for the head of manager or board now.

Lets hold on tight and hope for the best, atleast until next season.

    Cheers all..

  17. Dear Mr Wenger

Last night Man Utd played a 32 year old in their midfield. He was superb
Mr Ferguson does not look at the birth certificate when picking his teams. He picks quality over age
Would you pick a 32 year old in Arsenals midfield?

    Mr Angry

  18. YW one of your better ones today

But what happened in Fulham is somewhat linked to us not buying but the way we played last week even if we had bought we may have still lost.
charlie, you may be right about our ability to finance purchases as we are going into a possible recession and the Highbury flats buyers my have forfieted theri deposits and left Arsenal holding on to much lower property prices. As thsi juncture it is not clear but such scenario is not out of the question. AW have spend quite big before Wiltord, Reyes and Walcott to name a few so he is not adverse to spending when he sees value. While we as fans wants transparency it may not be possible as too much transparency may get in the way the Arsenal conducts it’s business affairs on the property side.
We have a sub prime issue in the USA and also in the UK and a ongoing credit crunch world wide. Europe is heading towards an economic slow down so maybe our exposure to unsold properties may be too high. May be we just have to make do this season and it will become clear to us at a later date.

Perhaps AW is looking at these factors and not spening the monies he is allocated.

There is a danger in that though if we do not make it to the top four or we do not get to the knock out phase of the CL. The monies saved will be counterproductive as we will lose major streams of revenue not to mention our ability to hold to our star players with out CL games.

AW need to make careful decisions.

    Up The Arse!!!!

  19. Frank – if you think the answer is for the players to pull their socks up and try harder, you’re wrong. They tried as hard as they could, they simply weren’t good enough. It wasn’t because of a lack of coaching and it wasn’t because of effort, it cannot be fixed on the training pitch, this display was down to a lack of quality.
If we sign someone like Barry, I will slit my wrists. We need a star, not the mediocre. We need someone that can beat a man. Still, the fans have got what they wanted, they hated the frustration of us creating 25 clear-cut chances with Alex Hleb’s genius, goodness, wasn’t he frustrating, I hated the way he would make us play beautiful football. Now we can make no clear-cut chances and have no frustration. We’ve swapped excited frustration, for depressing boredom, here’s a round of applause for our supporters, clap, clap, clap.

You’d think that Silvestre would be a good signing to bolster the squad, but Hoyte, Senderos and Traore have now gone out. For each new player in, two or three leave. And not even just this summer, every summer. If you didn’t know better, you’d think we’re financially crippled, it doesn’t make sense.

What the hell is going on with Djourou. Why was he dropped for Saturday. I don’t want Djourou dropped, I want Wenger to start showing some faith in the guy. I believe in him, why can’t Wenger. His treatment of Djourou is completely out of character. Wenger has always been incredibly loyal to his players, but Djourou is never, ever given a sustained opportunity. I don’t want Djourou dropped, I want Gallas dropped, how many opportunities for that bloke?, ENDLESS. It doesn’t work Arsene, it doesn’t work, he’s not a good defender, how many failures until he works that out. Senderos and Toure gave us a record-breaking CL defensive run, what has Gallas / Toure ever given us but disaster, yet Senderos is shown the door. I tell you what, if I was Djourou I’d get out of Arsenel as quickly as I could, his treatment has been shambolic. Even when we sent him to Birmingham for experience, he was played in central midfield?!, how was that supposed to help his defensive positioning, why didnt we demand he play CB if that’s where we wanted him to get experience. The same is happening with Traore now, why do we sign him to a contract and then send him to Pompy, will he play more there than here?, do they have less numbers than we do?, will he play left-wing or left-back, and if so, where will he play when he comes back to Arsenal – if he plays left-wing and then comes back to Arsenal as a left-back, the entire experience is a write-off. As well as a lack of consistency with the fans, I think there’s a lack of consistency with the players, it’s all well and good getting these players to play in different positions to expand their horizons, but does anyone know what their position is any more?

Robin Van Persie – how many games must we wait before we get a performance, 10, 100, 1000? He’s an out and out icing on the cake player, unfortunately we currently have a cake made of bird seed.

Look, there’s no question we’ll improve, it would be impossible not to. We need Cesc back in the team, we also need Vela and Song inserted into this team, I don’t care where, just put them in, because wherever they play, they are two guys that are full of purpose, intent. Song achieved more in a handful of minutes on the pitch than most of the rest of the team did over 90.

Arsene and the board are perhaps 90 minutes from out and out mutiny by the fans. The fans are massively depressed and even worse, totally bored. What is it, 3 / 4 shots in 180 minutes football – if I hear one more commentator saying “too much pretty football from Arsenal” … if it was that, it would be alright, it’s not, we’re no oil painting, we’re no flawed-genius of a football team, this is slow, side-to-side visionless football from the bottom draw.

  20. YOGI WELL WRITTEN. I am glad you were away yesterday as the realists and the fanatics nearly came to blows.

If we get another creative CM and have Song at DM we have a team that could be as good as last season, provided there ¡is unison between the centre backs, I believe Djouru should be part of this equation.

Vela could play a good part in this campaign as could Wilshere coming off the bench.

To achieve a title we need massive improvements from RVP and for Theo to finally get it together. and for EDS and Rosicky to come back like new .

FINALLY TO STOP PISSING OFF MOST OF THE FANS PR BY PHW AND THE MANAGER SHOULD BE REDUCED CONSIDERABLY.

  21. how about this team for tomorrow?

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Djourou Clichy
    Eboue Song Cesc Nasri
    Vela Bendtner

Drop walcott, gallas, Denilson, Ade and RVP. we have the squad to do it but we dont have a manager with the balls to drop players like Ade and Gallas.

Looks like Inler is finally off after talks with Udinese were a success from his point of view. I cant see either Barry or Alonso joining us. Pool wont sell us alonso, at least not for knockdown price, it would have to be £17m, no less.
So wenger is in the sh*t. his options are drying up and time is running out. begs the question, why did Wenger wait so long to try and sign a Flam replacement when we lost Flam in May?
Will song have to do the job? here is a player that wenger told us would be a defender during the summer. Mind you, he’s the best option we’ve got right now and that jsut about says it all.

  22. Michael Johnson from Man city is still an option. I think City want to keep him but he would not be expensive in either wages or fee. OK so he is a creative player but this weekend showed that we only have one of those (cesc) and clearly we are too dependent on him.
it possible we could go for a 5 man midfield though I think wenger prefers 4-4-2 domestically.
the question is, once Cesc is back in the team, are any of Song, Denilson, Ramsey etc good enough defensive partners for him?? thats the $64,000 question isn’t it and to be honest no one can know that answer.

I agree with other posters that the bigger issue is the continuing weak central defensive partnership. I think we have potential better partnerships than Toure/Gallas but the seniority/captaincy issue will probably keep this pair together the whole season and I doubt we can win a trophy with them at the back. How depressing.

  23. So apparently our bid for Inler has failed. A real shame, I thought he could’ve been a decent Sagna-esque signing.

  24. Wenger needs to put a sock in it and take proper actions otherwise he got to go…

  25. INLER was hyped up I saw him play twice and he was no better than Diably

GAZZAP Song can fill the DM position the others you mentioned are lighjtweights.

Alonso for 15 million after loaning out Phil and sell on money from Bemtely and Muamba is a good deal for once sop penny pinching.

    AND GIVE DJOURU A CHANCE

  26. GAZZAP statement that hes too weak to last 90 minutes seems ludicrous to me but once again its the PR nightmare

  27. The team we put out against Fulham was definately no weaker than the team we put out against Everton at the end of last season. You would expect a midfield 4 of Nasri, Denilson, Eboue Walcott to create more chances than one of Walcott, Denilson Gilberto and Eboue. Clichy, Toure Gallas and Sagna looked a better back 4 than Clichy Galls Song and Toure, and up front you would say Ade plus RVP is better pairing than Ade and Bentner.
But the team didn’t play! It was the worse game I have ever seen Denilson play, and so many players looked to be below there best it was unbelievable.
On the other hand, we were playing away in a London derby, conceeded a silly goal, hit the post and missed a couple of chances.
Chelsea looked mediocre on Sunday, and Man U could only win by a single goal. Liverpool needed a couple of late goals to win there match.
It really looked that the mental preparation for this match was all wrong.
But what of the reat of the season?
I was optimistic, with the players that had come in, Nasri, Vela Ramsey and those promoted to the squad Wilshere, we seemed to have a bigger squad in terms of numbers but now AW seems intent on again cutting it to the bone. it looks like we will have only 6 specialist defenders, and considering a couple of years ago we went through 8 left backs in a season do we really have cover?
Yes Song can play at CB, but it looks like we need him in midfield, and the same can be said for Eboue reverting to RB.
So many seasons we seem to strugle at the end as injuries, suspensions catch up with us.
The problem seems to be that AW is not willing to manage a big squad. If a player is unhappy about not getting enough games rather than say tough, go home and count your wages, AW gets rid of them. Then when we need them, we don’t have them.
An as the best youngsters are all ready in the squad, or out on loan, we don’t even have good enough young players coming in from the reserves.
One season fading due to injuries at the end could be bad luck, but three or 4 and you begin to think it is bad management. Even in the invincibles season we lost a chance of winnig the champions league trough fatigue to the first team squad.
Managing a big squad is probably one of the most difficult aspects of modern management, you only have to listen to the critisism Benitez gets for rotating, but it is essential.
AW is a brilliant manager in all other aspects of the game, but this is one area wher he is open to question.

  28. NAGA Great article in Telegraph and comments by Lee Dixon we cant say it here because we would be doom and gloom merchants but what Dixon says is TRUE.

  29. IF AFC WAS A CLUB AND EVERYONE HAD A VOTE THEN THE PROPOSITION TO REST GALLAS WOULD BE APPROVED BY A MASSIVE MAJORITY

  30. Grover W Jr you made fall of my seat laughing!!!!!!

Seriously though there are two big issues.

1 Gallas, Toure partnership is looking ropy Djourou should be given a chance ahead of Gallas (our captain!)

2 Denilson is not a defensive midfielder and will never be, Eboue is a utility player with no brain therefore can not play CM long term

  31. Fine column, Yogi. Clearly focused on the issues, and infuriated where infuriation is warranted. Also right to call Arsene out on his cloudy quote.

This is madness that Arsene will not spend money others say he has. Paddy Vierra Mark II? That was Diaby.

To me, the other question is why he has left the buying until AFTER the over-whelming majority of the prospects are cup-tied. Isn’t the CL one of our two goals?

Arsene has known he had to make this purchase probably even before the season ended. Even if for months he has known that his favourite target would not be cup-bound and wanted to wait to drive the price down, wouldn’t it have been more effective (not to mention safer) to strike a deal before the CL started so the other team knew he had half a dozen other options still available.

I only hope that this doesn’t become another situation where we have wasted weeks chasing something that won’t happen — the first summer of Baptista (who clearly was never going to come if it meant losing his passport opportunity), or last year’s Ribery goose chase.

Wenger is a magnificent manager, and his replacement of Hleb was brilliant. But to leave this other key replacement so late is an unacceptable risk for a business like this. We can only hope that he is in control of the situation and that it has not gotten away from him.

For the stakes he plays for, has all this been to save 3 million pounds?

Even if he gets his man, I think the process is insane.

  32. I believe AW didn’t feel it was urgent ot bring in a cm. Then came the injuries to Diaby and Cesc.
Would we all be panicing so badly if the squad was fit.
Once Diaby was injured at the Emirates cup, it was too late to get someone in who would ready for the FC Twente game and the start of the season, so why not wait and try to get the best bargain.
The injury to Cesc and the Fulham performance have made that look a bad decision, but that is hindsight.

  33. John, while I agree with your hindsight point, there isn’t a fan out there who didn’t want Flamini replaced MUCH earlier in the summer. I would even guess that wenger ideally would have wanted a Flam replacement in by now.
There were even plenty of fans who wanted better backup for Cesc. I mean we were lucky with injuries to Cesc last season. if he were to miss 3 months of this season would we be able to cope? the fulham game says not.

OK so wenger bought Bishoff, Coquelin and Ramsey. none of these players can possibly be ready to step into the team regularly. once again wenger has bought for the future and we are left with few good options for midfield. After cesc no one can name the other first choice midfielder at the club. Some say, denilson, some say diaby, some say Song and even a few are talking about Eboue. The confusion about who can do the job tells its own story.

  34. The Fulham result wasn’t just about the midfield or the central defensive partnership. There was a lack of desire all over the pitch. The only person that showed any of kind of drive and determination was Eboue and even then there were several muppets around me booing him.

People need to look at all the issues, not just those highlighted by the sensationalised media. For example, does RVP merit a starting place currently? Does Theo?

  35. If AW has one weakness as a mamager, it is that he is not good at managing a big squad. As soon as a player gets unhappy at not playing AW gets rid.
We are going into the season with only 6 specialist defenders, (assuming Senderos leaves)Eboue and Song can play as defenders but it looks as if both will be sorely needed in midfield. A couple of seasons back we went through 8 left backs in one season.
Every year we fall away as injuries and suspensions bite.
A couple of weeks ago I was optimistic about squad strength, but now AW seems to be cutting to the bone again.

  36. GROVER. Your post was so accurate, the only place for cheap midfielders, is Zimbabwe, or North Korea, we have to realize prices have gone up Robinho 35 million is ridiculous but Madrid will probably pay more for Villa.

To try and save 3 million on Alonso is ridiculous, even if he cant play in ECL he can create chances and give Cesc a bit of a rest. We lucked out on sell on clauses from Betley and Muamba so please no more PR get Alonso not a Croatian or Tibetan

  37. Gazzap as president of Song for DM fan club, you have to admit he played well fro Charlton, was excellent at ANC and Olympic games, and showed his form last sason and again on Saturday he is light years ahead of Denilson. FOR ONCE I applaud our manager when we had doubts he stuck by him and its paid off, however Gallas, and Theo are another story.

  38. I know this may be controversial but I believe the players are feeling the same as most of the fans are at the moment and this was shown on the pitch at Fulham.

I dont think they believe they are good enough, they didnt have the confidence. If you were a world class player and you were playing alongside a central midfield of Denilson and Eboue would you not think you might struggle. Of course a player will never admit this but they will have their own opinions about players and they must see massive weaknesses in our team. We can see them as fans so they must be able to see them as they are playing with them week in week out. I dont think we have the confidence.

What has happened this season has always been my biggest fear, we rode last seaon on confidence, we started amazingly and what we lacked in experience we made up in confidence. This season we have started slowly and I fear we dont have the experiance or class to get confidence back. This coupled with a captain that doesnt look to have the respect of the players worries me greatly!

  39. The door policy at nightclub Arsenal is fit and well – one in, one out. This has recently been modified to 1 in 2 out as Silvestre is covering the loss of Phil and Traore! Many Gooner’s will be glad to see the back of Phil but I am not one of them. He was awesome in 2005-6 and we must ask questions why he has not progressed as he might have done. I think this is at least in part due to Arsene not being a great coach of defenders and playing in a team that is not built for defence. Being shunted around for Campbell and Gallas didn’t help as it affected his confidence, nor did a number of injuries and some high-profile mistakes. Like him or not Phil is a natural defender – unlike Gallas and Toure and he likes to attack the ball and do the ugly things at the back which our other centrebacks do not do anywhere near as well. He is also a natural leader so much so that Arsene considered making him captain. AC Milan want him and they know about defending; Baresi and Maldini are living proof of this. I think that the slower game in Italy will suit Phil.

Myles Palmer makes some good points about this in an article today and I and others have made similar point about Gallas/Toure being too similar and about a covering defender and a stopper. It’s clear that Arsene wants defenders with covering pace and Phil will never have this. Arsene has refuted the stopper/coverer model and I believe he is wrong. I also believe that he is wrong about Gallas.

Whether Gallas should be captain or not is almost irrelevant as he is not good enough for the first team. He was abysmal against WBA playing against Ismael “George Weah” Miller. Miller for FFS! Who the hell is he and yet he made our captain look old and slow – which is what he is. Could you imagine Keown, Bould, Adams or Campbell being made to look like Gallas was last week against a Championship striker? The mistake for the goal v Fulham was not even a schoolboy error. If Phil had done this he would have been doused in oil and burned to death on the Emirates pitch.
Gallas is decline and will only get worse. At least Phil is young and can improve. Like many Gooners I though we got the best of the Cashley/Gallas deal but we didn’t. We should have taken the money for Cashley and let Gallas score own goals for Chelsea.

I admit to losing faith in Phil after Anfield and questioned whether he would ever make it at Arsenal but the way Gallas is playing, I would rather have Phil. The problem with Gallas is that he has experience and we can’t afford to lose any more experienced players and that since he is captain he is virtually undroppable. Why is he captain, because there is no one else, why do we need his experience, because there is no one else.

  40. Gallas for captain, irrespective of the fact that he is shite?

Hell no! Look at him losing it at Djourou after 1 mistake v WBA. Almunia had to calm Gallas down by shouting forcefully at him.

I have no problem with captains berating players but Gallas lost it, badly. He cannot control himself sufficiently, he is playing as badly as Phil or even Cygan and worst of all he used to play for Chelsea under Mourinho and now he is our captain? Oh and we pay him 80k a week but could not offer this to Flamini – a far better player.

    Spare me from the nightmare!

  41. Marcus Field, Alex Ice Cream, agree with both of you entirely. Regards Senderos, yes I think we all lost the faith with him at times, but, I think we all recognised as well that Phil was the lesser of two evils, he would at least be part of a defensive partnership that would make sense. One big guy dominating the air, one little guy cleaning up. Toure / Gallas makes no sense.

Regards the players not believing in “it”, I agree and I think that was clear against Fulham. I believe this is a factor that Arsene just isn’t understanding. Lets say we’re all wrong and technically speaking, we don’t need any reinforcements, it would still be a situation where we need new players because, it needs to be freshened up. The players want to see a superstar next to them, it gives them confidence, it makes them believe they’re winners. They believe we’re desperate, and scratching around for players, and they’re playing like that. But also, the fans need something to excite them. The fans are bored by seeing the same players doing the same things every year. Even if we were winning the title every year, we’d still want new players, because you need a different plot. E.T is a great film, but I don’t watch it every day and if I did, it would bore the pants off me. We need something new to stimulate us. The excitement of seeing Dennis Bergkamp, brilliant!, it didn’t matter if he struggled for the first season or so, you were still excited because he was .. Dennis Bergkamp, a genius, and you wanted to be there when it did start happening for him. Arsene, give us something, something to stimulate our interest, please!, it doesn’t have to make perfect financial sense, you’re the manager, not the accountant, entertain us! And give the players someone new to work with in training, someone who inspires them, let them believe.

  42. At the end of last season Wenger said that he would buy an offensive and defensive player as well as other younger players in the first two weeks, and he also said Hleb would stay. He waited over a month before signing Nasri but Hleb left meaning that we’re one winger short (I’m sorry but Walcott and Eboue can’t be relied upon as first choice). The defensive player still hasn’t been signed and we’ve already dropped points in the title race because of it. We were four points off the title last season, how important could losing these three points be in the long term and in damaging the players’ confidence?

  43. Hboy,

So you would like to risk the long-term stability of club in order for you not to be bored of seeing the same players season after season.

There’s a club the other side of the river for that kind of thing, maybe you should follow them. Arsenal is built on stability, so Arsene is never going to make sweeping changes unless players force his hand.

  44. Our idiot offside king striker has said if we lose one more game it will take us out of the running

  45. ICECREAM Djouru can improve, this must be Gallas last season, he slagged off the kids last year before he was captain he has a lousy game aginst WBA and starts screaming at Djouru, hes not a leader, but our manager is very obstinate. I shall not call him by his nickname until we get more PR bullshit.

  46. LOOK DONT KID OURSELVES IF CESC GOT A SERIOUS INJURY AND WAS OUT FOR 2-3 MONTHS WE COULD KISS GOODBYE TO THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEXT YEAR, PLEASE GET A CREATIVE CM NOW.

  47. Why couldn’t Wenger promote Senderos to play with Toure two seasons ago and not buy Gallas? Being first choice, I think he could’ve become one of the best defenders in the league. Oh and in 2005/06 Senderos as obviously amazing and also had a great world cup, conceding no goals.

  48. Senderos was* obviously amazing is what I meant to say.

There are so many out of form players that Wenger never drops. I bet if Fabianski plays amazingly in the FA cup and CC he won’t get a chance to play in the PL or CL.

Personally, I would like to see a new winger because two quality wingers in Nasri and Rosicky are not enough due to injuries, suspensions etc. In my opinion, we should have three quality wingers and a younger fourth winger. Eboue could improve (he has the ingredients to be a good winger) but he hasn’t for a season and Walcott does nothing. Song should also start alongside Cesc from now on until we get a new DM (if we do). Song has great passing, tackling, reading of the game and desire.

  49. I’m mired in the same bog that most of the posters are here. The tone the team is setting is so different this year than last year. It makes me wonder which is the true Arsenal. It certainly appears that Wenger has not acted to “fix” the problems he identified in the failed run out for the title and UCL. Wenger sounded so gutted at the end of last season that it was hard to think he would not tinker with his formula. I really think he was surprised that the team didn’t pull any silverware last year yet he has done nothing to improve the squad. If he thinks it will be easier this year then he really has lost the plot.

As for Ade’s talk about losing one more game…it seems that the race for the PL crown is so tight that losing a few games early in the year puts you out of the race. You almost have to play perfect football to win. Just look at the points totals that have won the PL over the last five years. There is only one trend.

As for strengthening the squad, I would love to see another midfielder come in but don’t think that is going to happen. I’m hopeful, because Denilson looked so poor against a team that he should have been able to play well against. In defense I really do think that Gallas has become a liability and whatever is wrong with Toure doesn’t seem to be going away. Something needs to be sorted out. Song looks the real deal and Djourou too and I’d love to see them get a chance. I’m also not sure why Vela seems to be riding the bench given his performance in pre-season. It seems like WBA and Fulham would be perfect teams for him to get PL experience against.

It may be a long season but I’m thankful that I can still feel proud of Arsenal. I’d still much rather support these guys than be a spud.

  50. i agree with alex ice cream that chelsea got the better of the cole/Gallas deal. I remember at the time most gooners thought we’d done really well out of it, but we all thought we had the next Tony Adams. in reality his partnership with toure has continually failed and never looked assured. How I wish we’d just sold Cole for £13m cash and bought a defender we actually wanted.
It was the board’s stinginess that led to that whole affair and the same can be said for happened with Flamini. all he wanted was a good deal last year but we could not meet his demands and now here we are losing games and needing to spend £17m to replace him. good players should be retained even if its expensive, because its always cheaper in the long run.

and I cant help but remember Diarra not being given games when thats all he wanted. he didn’t care if it was right wing or wherever, he just wanted to play. that was at the time that Eboue was on the RW and playing like a headless chicken. wenger had diarra on the bench game after game using him only in the CC and when we were down to the bare bones. THAT was a big mistake. had we given diarra just a few games more I think he would have stayed and the rest would be history – we may even be champions now.

what is strange is that against WBA we actually looked fairly solid and kept a clean sheet. note Djourou was playing in that game. then toure comes back for Fulham and we are all over the place once more. The simple solution is to get Djourou back in the side either for Gallas or Toure.
If it annoys say Toure, then so be it. Arsenal’s results are more important even than a big players’ feelings.

  51. I’m hopeful that the Senderos rumour is just a rumour. For those of you who think he’s shit, he led an inexperienced defence into the CL final, he was the rock for a Switzerland defence that conceded no goals against the likes of Thierry Henry and Andriy Shevchenko (he was good at the time).

In January and February, when Toure was at ACN and then became injured, Senderos and Gallas conceded barely any goals and then when Toure came back into the team, we had the run of draws were we couldn’t hold onto a lead and always conceded first.

He’s the best and most natural defender at the club. We’ll still have Djourou (if the Rennes loan is just a rumour) but I think this would be a big mistake. I don’t think Silvestre is better than Senderos or Djourou either.

  52. If Senderos goes, then three of Cesc’s best mates (Hleb, Flamini and Senderos) will have left the club, not to mention their positions as three of our best players.

  53. Diarra would not have stayed unless he was getting into cebtral midfield ahead of Flamini. He was worried about his international career and Flamini was a direct competitor.
Now AW has confirmed Senderos going i’m worried about squad depth at the back, only 6 specialist defenders plus Song and Eboue. With our injury record I can see Ade playing full back before the end of season.

  54. I’m pretty much on everyone’s doomandgloom page right now and don’t want to just repeat what everyone else is saying but I did want to add two points on two issues that have recently come up in the discussion the last two-three days:

    1. Song as DM and AW’s belief that he does not have the stamina for that position for the whole season: citing Song’s experience in that position at tournaments lasting 2-4 weeks does not disprove AW’s opinion. I don’t think AW believes Song is unable to handle the position for a handful of games–just not as first choice DM for an entire season. AW makes judgments like that based on stats and scientific measurements of a player’s abilities and stamina. It’s why he also doesn’t see Kolo as a first choice DM, the stats show Kolo doesn’t have the stamina in that position for a whole season every week. The way Arsenal play, in midfield, you need players with incredible energy levels that last over 90 mins. every week.

AW kept taking off DB10 around the 70th minute, esp. in his later years. Dennis would get furious at constantly being taken off around the same time in nearly every game but then AW showed him the stats that proved how Dennis’ game would fall off starting around 70 mins. After that Dennis didn’t complain. So while I’d like to see AW try Song out as DM for at least some games, his opinion on Song’s stamina is based on objective measurements, not “spin.”

    2. Kompany v. Silvestre: City’s first choice was Silvestre, not Kompany. I also wondered if AW may have thought he already has plenty of young defenders still learning their trade, he doesn’t need another one (Kompany’s game declined in the 2nd half of Hamburg’s season last term, he was inconsistent) — but then he goes and sends Senderos out on loan, a move I don’t think we can afford. Traore I understood, not Senderos. If he’d been replaced by a defender with no injury problems and no history of errors, then I’d accept it better. I really do think that Milan will improve Senderos greatly and that he will not want to return to us.

And finally, if AW does not bring in a midfielder, I think we will have an incredible struggle to finish 4th. Wouldn’t surprise me if we dropped out of the top 4. Even if he does bring in someone like Alonso, we will still struggle to finish 4th because there are too many problems in other areas–and Alonso doesn’t solve all our midfield problems anyway. If he does not bring in a midfielder AND loans out Djourou, then we will have a horrible season. I can’t remember going into a season as worried as I am now.

Some of this could be mitigated if AW would just make the right choices, esp. in defense: drop Gallas and/or Kolo and pair either one with Djourou (my preference would be to drop Gallas and order Kolo to shape up, physically and mentally). Give Vela and Bendtner a chance against teams like Fulham — they showed real promise as a tandem in pre-season. Let RVP and Ade know they are not automatic first team choices, give them competition. Stop putting Theo out on the wing, he clearly is a waste there. He gives us nothing there. In fact, given our defensive vulnerabilities at the back, Theo makes our defense worse.

  55. Too much Drama, just play the game and get better. Quit trying to purchase the talent you can develop in the organization.

    Dave

  56. TopGunPires – There’s risking stability, and there’s being a football club. Football is an entertainment, it is there to entertain. If you don’t entertain, you lose the fans, and the business turns to crap. There’s plenty of fans risking their own personal financial stability to go and support the team, £48 for away to Fulham on Saturday, then they get that performance. Perhaps you didn’t go, it’s easy to use throw-away comments like go-and-support-spurs when football means sod all to you, but for those that rely on Arsenal as their escapism from the difficulties of every day struggles, it’s mightily irritating to walk away from the game more depressed than when you started.

  57. gazzup,

I don’t want to get started on the Diarra/Flamini situation again but losing them with no replacement in sight is a horrible position to be in. Eboue playing there is even more horrible and is a testimony to how standards have slipped. Before we had, Vieira, Parlour, Petit, Edu, Gilberto and Cesc, now we have Eboue and Denilson who together with Nasri and Walcott formed the worst midfield ever seen for a Premiership fixture under Wenger.

Diarra could have been managed so he would have stayed. This was an example of weak and poor man-management. Selling him for £5.5m was a joke. Not giving Flam a contract at the beginning of the season and failing to keep him is proving to be an expensive mistake; the same with Diarra.

  58. I have come round to the thinking that AW has enough money to make 1 more signing of about £10m max and that is it. I think that something is wrong with the move to the Emirates which is why we have to sell to buy. I noticed that debts related to property rose to £41m on the last set of accounts. Maybe other unforeseen issues have hampered us in the current economic climate which is why we cannot spend more. The board do not want to get into any more debt and so we are stuck. Maybe the flats can help, assuming that people don’t default on completion.

The calculations for the budget for the stadium have been shown to be optimistic in terms of what the model meant for money to invest in the squad. The naming rights and shirt deals were not good deals for Arsenal at all. The costs of the stadium and the flats were underestimated, hence our transfer paralysis.

Dein realised this which is why he wanted more investment. He knew that we needed more funds than our economic model would provide so we could keep up with the likes of Manu and Chelsea.. He did the wrong thing by Kroenke and especially Usmanov but that doesn’t mean that he was wrong about the finance.

All the spin is to protect the young squad so that they believe in themselves. AW can’t come out and say what we all know, that many of the squad are not ready to mount a serious title challenge or they have yet to prove themselves. This could shatter fragile confidence. The board are saying that there is money to spend but will not say how much as that will send the alarm bells ringing, especially to the fickle supporters. The board may find that attendances are hit and that suddenly a huge waiting list for season tickets is just that- a waiting list. For many people in the current climate it may not be possible to afford a new £1500 season ticket. I daresay there are enough people who want one and can afford it but this may change if we fall out of the top 4 and the economic situation worsens.

AW and the board hope that what they have will keep them in the top 4 for the next couple of season by when the flats are hopefully sold, the economy a bit better and some of the youngsters mature but it’s a gamble and a delicate balancing act.

AW is stubborn and he may be wrong but he is not stupid, he knows that we need more players but has to be ultra-careful with who he buys as there simply is no more money to spend. He can’t state it publically which is why we get the annoying spin. I think the spin is overdone though. Again, I believe that mistakes have been made especially with Flam/Diarra and allowing players like Pires, Flam, Sol to leave on frees. We have invested heavily in players like Denilson and Walcott but they are simply not ready to start and have been rushed in as there is no-one else.

This is just me reading between the lines. I welcome any views agreeing or to the contrary.

  59. NY – That’s the exact point I was trying to make about AW’s plans for Song. It’s something to do with explosive pace and strength – as opposed to the kind of durability and stamina that Eboue and Flamini have – which means he’s not expected to spend a whole season at DM.

I have to say, my quality of life improves when Arsenal play badly. In the week after a dreary defeat I take a long hard look at myself: I read more, avoid droning on and on about football with friends, pay more attention to current affairs, spend less time on the internet at work and listen to more music, which I’m sure doesn’t go unnoticed by my other half.

In fact she probably wants Arsenal to lose more often!

  60. icecream I hope you are wrong your comments although true depress me beyond belief, I am sure that if we finished less than fourth ther would be a real revolution amongst fans and corporate sponsors.

The manager cant be expected to pluck rabbits out of the hat if this baord has made such bad miscalculations they should sell out for 400 million profit and find someone with financial stability like Paull Allen or that type who can afford real money and a yearly transfer budget. WE ONLY NEED ONE OR 2 PLAYERS ITS NOT MILLIONS IF WE PAY 5 MILLION OVER THE ODDS AT THIS CRUCIAL STAGE

  61. sol,

I totally agree but if the money is not there, or there is just enough AW has to get the right player(s)

I know its frustrating and I share those frustrations but if you look at the silly money being quoted for players what can AW do if the affordable players are not there and by affordable I mean within our budget.

I again go back to Flam and especially Diarra and the other crap deals we did with transfers and naming rights. This is where we could have done better.

We are where we are however, and I cannot believe that AW would not buy the player we need if he was there and within the budget. I agree that it shouldn’t be like this but if that is the reality of it what can we do?

  62. ICECREAM there is a standby 40 million credit line for transfers to be paid over 4 years that we could use and looking at the accounts unless the market drops a further 30% the flats will still show a profit

  63. I’m still not convinced by the lack of money for transfers arguement. Much of story about bad predictions of cost etc seem to have been put around by David Dein supporters.
The basic figure is that the extra match day receipts at the Emirates more than cover the debt repayments. There should be more money around. The reason we are not told how much there is for transfers is not because it would discourage the fans, rather that it would encourage other clubs to demand more.
The problem in my opinion is that AW wants a calibre of player that is not available, and is not willing to bring squad players to bolster numbers, as he doesn’t want to stop the development of young players.
I think he considers our recent run of injuries unlucky whereas to me it seems to have become normal.

  64. With all this happening I wish DD have stayed with SK, and not been pissed off with Hills woods snobbishness that we dont want his kind here. We need a business brain now and when the Nuggets wanted Allan Iverson he put his hand in his pocket and shelled out the money

  65. JOHN. Alonso is a player of the right calibre. Deins fans have not made the story up the manager said we are a selling club, Reading the accounts is like a jigsaw puzzle theres a missing piece.

  66. ICECREAM Dont blame Nasri hes just come into the midfield mess, having to work with Denilson, Ebuoe and Walcott would be frustrating for anyone

  67. John N,

The Arsenal Supporter’s Trust (I believe) came out with the £25m for transfers and wages and they are not DD supporters (sounds like a bra!)

I think there is truth to what you say about other clubs making us pay more if they think we have more money. I do think there is money, just not enough of it. The alternative is that we have money that we refuse to spend. Maybe true but that is not consistent with the penny-pinching that has gone on during that last couple of seasons. I don’t think that its DD propaganda; people can make up their own minds and look at the accounts.

Come on, AW knows far more about this than any of us and he knows the limits of his squad. He’s hoping that they exceed themselves while other issues are resolved.

I can’t believe that there is a mountain of cash that isn’t being spent. Why else would we have to balance the books all the time. If there is why would AW not spend anything and have to make a profit in the transfer market?

Watch was AW does, not what he says.

  68. I only believe quotes from the mannager I actually see him make myself on tele. The quote about us being a selling club seemed to be the English press’ take on the French press’ take of what he said. I take that one with a pinch of salt.
The board have made provision for AW to spend, for example the bank guarentees which were reported at a shareholders meeting (last year?) in case clubs were unwilling to accept our credit for multi year deals.
I think we just have to accept that AW believes the squad is good enougheven if we don’t.
I hope he is proved right and us wrong, but I’m not optimistic.

  69. I don’t believe the bulsh*t about Song not good enough for DM. The ACN is a tough competiotion and he played better than Essien! He kept Ronaldino quiet for a whole 90 mins at the olympics… never wasted a pass good headers and good tackling. That boy is to me better than Flamini and we would see that when he gets games. We can still recover and we should be thankful for this defeat or wake up call. Arsene needs tp play the right assets in the right places. Fisrt off – Please accept that Theo is an impact sub and nothing more. I would still stick Eboue at RM as he works well with Sagna. We can play a Djouru and Toure pairing and we stick Ade and Bentner/Vela upfront to get goals. If Cesc is still out, I will put RVP out wide and play Nasri as creative play maker.

  70. It’s official – AW has lost it…..

‘I believe we can challenge with the strong squad we have’!!!!

If the squad is so strong, why are you playing Eboue and Denilson in central midfield….

The season is over before it has started, we now officially have ZERO chance of winning anything.

You can call me hysterical and say i am over reacting, but surely none of you believe we can win anything with this squad???

  71. All this chat about finances and transfer payments pending on the sale of flats. This is a football club, and football is a sport, the idea of a sport is to win. That should be our aim and I am affraid to admit that the club, especially the manager are spending too much time on the economics of it all and they have lost the essentials of what we are trying to acheive. Winning football matches…

This is what happens when a manager gets to involved in the running of the club.

  72. Matt,

Don’t take it seriously. Wenger “believes it”. Well so do I after a few pints!

This is his way of boosting fragile confidence, that’s all. What do you expect him to say: “We are shite and will finish 6th?”

Personally, I wish he would say nothing.

  73. The O-Ring Theory of Production: or why one ‘Zero’ will blow up our whole space-ship

When I’m not writing comments on aculturedleftfoot’s board, I sometimes engage in a bit of organizational economics. One classic tool for thinking about the relationship between inputs (players) and outputs (winning team) is the production function. One usually assumes that different resource mixes could come up with the same result — a team can win with more offense, with more defense, a better goalkeeper, better set pieces, etc — and so a coach could chose to substitute more of one thing for another and still have a winning formula. For example, a team could chose to have a fantastic striker and spend a bit less on defense.

But then there is the example of the Space Shuttle Columbia. You might remember that one. It was the Billion Dollar investment by NASA that exploded (killing all on board, of course) because of a defect in a 70 cent part– the ‘o-rings’ that were to act as a seal, keeping rocket fuel from leaking. When temperatures dropped below freezing in the days before launch the o-rings hardened and lost their flexibility. The rockets then leaked fuel on launch, leading to a catastrophic blow-up.

The lesson of the o-rings is that production functions may be multiplicative. Multiply anything by zero and the result is zero. Or, in layman’s language, one non-performing part and your whole investment is shit.

I think about this model every-time I hear that a great player is not worth their fee! I don’t know what Alonso is worth under normal circumstances, but with the midfield we have now, we are one or two injuries away from watching Wenger’s several-year investment fall apart. And if one of the causalities is that we fail to make the CL or that Cesc leaves sooner than he otherwise would have, the costs of not signing a couple of players will prove huge. IF Wenger can a player for less (Appiah?), great. But a failure in the midfield will be catastrophic.

The model also tells me that spending a million quid on the best physios in the world and a set-piece specialist would be great investments, even if one thinks that those assets should be available for less.

BTW, I am really saddened by Senderos leaving…but not that shocked by the hypocrisy of many of you, who will no doubt miss having somebody to blame for all Arsenal’s woes. If Eboue is now sold, that will be traumatic.

  74. Fabregas’ Dad

I like your showering of praises for Senderos. Let’s be clear, Senderos is one of the worst defenders ever to play for the Arsenal. He’s in the group of Cygan, Stepanov and Luzny. He was poor in the CC finals against Chelsea, worse against Blackpool in the FA semi-finals in 2006/7. He was terrible in the CL games against Serville where he turned into a GK and allowed Kanoute and Alves to run rout. He let in the goal (og) against Villa and may have contributed to losing the title race. He was just bad against Liverpool in the Cl.

He’s tall but can’t jump-even Martins outjumping him on many occassions
Big but can utilise body to advantage-bullied all the time by Drogba, Kanoute, martins, McCarthy Santa Cruz etc.
Can’t turn body-remember what McCarthy did to him at Ewood Park
Very clumsy in the tackle and not comfortable on the ball
Can’t play anywhere other than CB
    As slow as a tortoise

Just not good for us; could do well in Italy because of its sail-paced football

I can go on and on that Senderos should never have won the Arsenal jersey, let alone No.6.

You talk of 2005/6 when Campbell was unwell but you also forgot that we played 4-5-1 with Gilberto sitting in front of the defence almost like a CB protecting Senderos.

I’m very happy he’s been let lose now. It’s long over due. If he had gone earlier, we could have probably been in the CL finals.

I support Arsene on this one. After having chances upon chances and now 23 and not showing any promise, Arsene just decided to cut his losses.

  75. AW comments that if he can find one more player he will do it but if not it will not limit ambitions sort of makes sense.
If he doesn’t bringin another player that will be no excuse for a bad season. He could sign Kaka and then have him break his leg in the first match.
On the other Diaby could get back into the side, stay fit and turn into the wonder midfielder we need.
I’m not sure which is the least likely.

  76. IF he doesnt sign anyone then basically he will be back to Wengerspin. After all the contradictory statements.

Good luck to Phil he was slow error prone and should well with Milan

Meanwhile Silvestre is walking wounded for 3 weeks

    Song will shine at DM

DONT START CESC TOMORROW HE ONLY NEEDS TO COME ON IF WE ARE STRUGGLING. REMEMBER SEVILE AWAY HE GOT CROCKED UNECESSARILY

  77. CALIFORNIA We are trading Ebuoe , and Denilson for Kaka

  78. I said yesterday that players-out versus players-in since last summer’s window leaves us in credit by over 20 million, rising to 30 million if you add in the sell-on fee for Muamba and the prospective 9 million for Senderos. In addition to that, Wenger would normally be allocated a small percentage of money for transfers from revenue from other sources (ticket sales, tv revenue, etc.). In short he’s, in theory, sitting on the kind of fortune most managers can only dream of. If he isn’t, it must mean that the players are our only assets and we’re stripping them. But we have absolutely no reason to believe this is the case.

I think Chelsea, United and Liverpool will be the top three. I think we’ll struggle to be fourth, thus putting our Champions League revenue next season severely at risk. I think we could be as low as seventh or eighth. I also think we’ll go out this year in the group stage, thus waving goodbye to somewhere between 10 and 40 million You’d think a tidy little sum like that would be useful to us, given the stadium debt. Apparently not.

You’d also think that keeping Cesc would be a priority. Cesc is the kind of player you see perhaps once in a lifetime. He deserves to have team-mates around him like Hleb who are a joy to play with, who are his equal creatively and who will shoulder their share the work. Rosicky, even if he recovers, won’t do that; he won’t play 45plus games this season. I doubt if Nasri will either, not once the thugs have kicked him to bits. Cesc deserves to strut his stuff in the Champions League. If we are offering him nothing but stuggling football outside Europe, we shouldn’t expect him to stay.

People say we shouldn’t panic-buy. Why the hell not? Would you tell someone who’s left their Christmas shopping till Christmas Eve that they needn’t give any presents this year? Sure, if you’re as parsimonious as Wenger is, it’s better to buy everything in the previous year’s January sales, but Wenger didn’t do that – unless you count Wilshere. He didn’t do it at the normal time either, which was when he knew Hleb and Flam were leaving. Last-minute panic-buying is what he has left himself with.

Deco for 8 million wouldn’t have been my first choice; nor would Alonso, even before he was cup-tied; nor would Arshavin for whatever stupid sum Zenit are wanting, but since Arshavin is the only top-class creative, versatile midfielder still on the market, he’s now our best chance. Otherwise it’s bye-bye Cesc and bye-bye Champions League money for this season and next. Assuming we don’t lose 1-3 to Twente of course.

Ian Wright talks a lot of rubbish, but today I heard him say that spending traumatizes Wenger. I’m afraid for once he is right.

  79. I HATE MYLES Palmer but what he said last year about the manager being a complete dictator is now true, he makes all the decisions whereas before DD was there for consultation.

ALEX, CALIFORNIA, DANNY MATT AND ALL OTHER TRAITORS DONT YOU THINK WE NEED A DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL.

  80. MIA YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN JOINED US TRAITORS, THE BUDGET SITUATION IS PATHETIC AND IF WE ARE BELOW FOURTH THE FANS WILL GO BESERK AND THEN I DONT CARE IF KROENKE, DEIN OR WHOEVER TAKES OVER AND GIVES US A REAL BUDGET

  81. Here comes one of the fanatics, solgooner.

for the first time I can really say I am so dissapointed being an Arsenal fan. We loose one game in which almost every player played without desire and urgency and we think that the players are no longer good. Answer me please, how can you tell now that this team will not come good? I have said before if being good is based on one performance we would all be in trouble as we have all messed up before, collectively or individually, thats life.

look, no one expected Eboue and Denilson to work througout the season but they were decent enough to play Fulham. Denilson has never played like this before but all of a sudden he is crap. Get a grip, please!

I dont give a damn if Arsene buys or not as I believe the players in house are good enough, call me what you want. Yes many are injury prone but lets be a little positive and hope they can stay fit as Arsene is not going to replace all of them. I know its a big “IF” but if we can possibly get our players fit we will be a great team.

You know its funny how we keep talking crap about the midfield when RVP had many chances to score and didnt but no one is talking about buying a striker. I would say that RVP has been the worst player so far. But no one would say he isnt good enough, based on what he has done before, well Denilson has played very well up until Fulham, so give him a break. Walcott too!

As has been stated, none of the top teams have looked good so far, as deep and rich as they may be. So what the hell is our problem?

I cant take all of this negativity, oh sorry reality!

    God Bless!!!!

  82. California, they won’t miss booing Senderos, anymore than they’ll miss booing Hleb. Haven’t you noticed, a new scapegoat has emerged: Gallas? Unfortunately – or not, depending on your perspective – being a highly strung creature, he’ll probably kill a few of them. Senderos and Hleb suffered in silence. Gallas doesn’t look so forbearing.

  83. Solgooner, am I traitor? Yes we need a director of football and without knowing much on the subject, I always thought that Dein worked for Wenger and did well. I never bought into Dein’s demonisation by the Arsenal fans. So, yes, I agree that his departure might be part of the reason we have so many problems signing and keeping (Flim flam) players. It shouldn’t all be down to Wenger.

  84. Paul N: Amen to that.

Christ, lighten up people! So we lost to Fulham. Some good players had an off day. Shit happens. The season is only two games old – reading some of you, you’d think it was over already.

  85. Your missing the point guys.

I want to see us win.

    Its a simple equation really.

Last year we had Diarra,Flamini,Gilberto and Hleb in midfield, and we were not good enough to win anything.

Now we have Cesc, backed up by Diaby (always injured), Denilson (don’t even get me started), Ramsey (a kid) and Bischoff (injured for the last 2 years).

I dont doubt that Nasri will more than make up for the loss of Hleb, but the point is -

If we were not good enough to win last year, how are we now?

Oh, and i didnt even take into account the fact that Chelsea have strengthened.

Come on guys, wake up and smell the coffee.

Something is seriously wrong when we have made a profit in the transfer window for the last 2 years, and AW either wont, or cant sign players.

Denilson and Eboue… only a few years back we had Vieira, Petit, Edu competing for places in the middle of the park.

If AW really thinks we can challenge this year, then i am sorry, he is delusional.

  86. Paul / Martino

Before the season started, I said I did not think that Denilson could carry out the defensive midfield role; he strikes me as better going forward. I, it seems, am in a reasonably small minority that believes Diaby could do it but he cannot be relied upon for a whole season at the moment. That needs addressing.

The situation, to me, is that we need an experienced defensively minded midfielder. If that is a 30 year old with no resale value so be it. The fundamental problem is that this is something Arsene identified as needing an additional body a fortnight ago. If that is the case, then it should be addressed.

I struggle to reconcile the position he took then with that which he has taken today, ie the squad is good enough. I can guess why – either he cannot afford the player he wants or has not been able to persuade a club to sell.

    YW

  87. I can’t believe what I’m reading today. Yes we lost at Fulham, a game we should have won hands down, so what? As a result we can’t win anything? What was Manu’s points in the first five games last season? Can we bounce back? Yes we can if we beat Newcastle at home.

I’m positive about this lost as I think its a wake-up call for Arsene.

I’ve always doubted Denilson’s capacity as either a deensive mid or attacking mid. He’s neither of the two. He’s not mobile enough to move the team and his passes are more of a square nature, the type that does not create many chances. He’s no eye for a defence-splitting pass.

He’s one season left to prove himself; that’s 2008, otherwise he might not survive beyond 2009. Anderson is far the better player even though younger but he’s shown his capability to get-the-team play for MANU.

  88. Thanks Martino, all this is just a going a little overboard.

If I read any more comments I will no doubt have to seek counseling for depression.

I think we need to get a life other than football. All of us know what needs to be done and when it is not done or something bad happens, we cant even see the next step in a postive manner. Something is a bit wrong with that!

“ONE GAME” we lost, “ONE”!!! geez!!

  89. Yogi, I by no means do not think that we shouldnt want an addition to the squad or nothing is wrong with being of that opinion. I am not one but thats ok. Yes Arsene did say he would buy, that player is yet to come, but lets give that a chance to materialise, no? What I have a problem with is thinking that we are some sort of crap team and the manager and board are all idiots, when these are the people who have gotten us to this level. Its just a bit much I think.

Song can definately play that DM role if you ask me, Wenger may not choose to play him there, which does confuse me.

Another thing, Wenger does not strike me as a person who will buy a player just because the fans are crying louder and it would to me be couter productive to the players to do so. He will buy a player that will fit the squad, so us a fans should just wait.

And Yogi, Denilson alone was not the reason for the loss, it was by committee!

    Be Good!!!

  90. “I by no means think”

  91. Mia,

As I explained. I fel that any surplus that we have is being carefully rationed and also eaten away by increased costs to fund the property development.

I admit that I am reading between the lines here and I could be wrong but it’s what makes most sense.

I don’t agree about the PR as we have discussed before but I can understand both the club’s need to be cagey and the supporters’ need to be informed. People like you and I and the others on this blog are obviously committed supporters and will support the club whatever happens but there are number of plastics who will be supporting someone else if things go wrong.

  92. Hello Gooners, and special hello to my fellow fake Arsenal fans who {spin} hate for our manager and our players.

Solgooner, I love you brother…We as fake Arsenal fans would like to nominate you as our Spin leader.

You make us wet our pants with your dark views that matches your dark sun glasses.

Let us know brother, we need your leadership. We need to form a strong darkness group in the face of those rose tinted, hope mongring real Arsenal fans.

  93. If i want to read this much misery i can go to Le Grove any time (and i do) – let’s keep a single defeat in perspective – if we fail in our next two games then communal wailing and doom-mongering will be perfectly justified!

  94. To all those who say its just one game:

Its not its 3. We were almost as poor v FC20 and WBA. With Fulham that makes 3 poor teams that our “strong squad” has not performed against.

Its not even 3 games though. Last year our flying start was instrumental in building the confidence of the team this year the opposite has happened and it will take some doing to reverse this. I am not saying it can’t be done, but the difference between this year and last is obvious.

Maybe the return of Cesc and Tom could do the trick? Maybe Diaby can do a Flamini? Its what we are going to need.

  95. Sol,

I don’t think Wenger is a dictator but I do think he is pathologically frugal and stubborn. As he himself said recently, he has the same traits as his parents, Alsatian peasants for whom there is a south German dialect word that translates roughly as ’sodding great unbudgeable stone’.

Wenger’s frugality has mostly been brilliant for Arsenal. The trouble is, his stubbornness means he is very slow and reluctant to respond to new circumstances – the ‘new’ circumstances in question being the unexpected loss of Hleb and Flam plus the interminable injuries to Rosicky, Eduardo and Diaby. I say ‘new’ in inverted commas, because he has actually had a good eight months to get his head round these particular circumstances, but to change the habits and philosophy of a lifetime he might need several years.

    Yogi,
how can you say he can’t afford the player he wants? With 30-odd million, he could afford any midfielder in the universe. More accurate surely to say that there isn’t at this late stage in the window a sensationally gifted, young, but nonetheless very experienced and versatile player for sale for about 20p? That’s what I mean by being frugal, stubborn and just a trifle unbending.

  96. Alex, its still one game and we all know that is a loss of three points, we optimists get that . Yes Alex we did play well early last year but still lost the title, Man U didnt play well and won! This is season long. Scripture “The race is not for the swift or strong but those who endure it” so lets not look at the season through one or two games, that would be a bit presumptous and irresponsible in my veiw.

The Irony is, if we play well in the next match, we will have different comments here as we did last year. thats a joke!

Yes If our players retuen it we will give teams trouble but I do agree at present we are not up to it as we are not at full strenght. Chelsea, Man U and Pool dont see to be up to it as yet either or would be in our shoes, so lets keep things balanced.

  97. Mia,

I agree but he doesn’t have £30m! I think that was a figure that he said just to prove a point.

I agree that Wenger could be more flexible when it comes to players but he isn’t. He knows the players he wants and goes after them. Look how long we waited for Kanu – over half a season when we needed a striker and AW watched Hleb for 2 years before buying.

He should be more flexible when it comes to prices I agree but in the current climate would you pay 18m for Barry, 16m for Alonso who is cup-tied, or 20m ish for Veloso or Moutinho?

This is why I said that the Flam and Diarra situation was a disaster – because they would cost a fortune to replace even assuming the players are there. Even if they were it takes time to adapt usually – Flam took 4 years then went.

I repeat losing Flam was the worst thing to happen to Arsenal in the transfer market since AW took over. More people are realising why now. Losing Diarra compounded this problem. I’ve heard all the arguments about this but my point is always the same.

For what its worth, I was never confident of getting anyone in to replace Flam as my posts show. We can’t even sign Gokham Inler FFS. Who is he?

Since 2005 we have not managed to sign many players who are not “developing.” Hleb- virtual unknown outside of Germany/Belarus, Baptista – loan (thankfully), Gallas swap, Tom – only when Athletico defaulted on a payment. Eddy and Sagna again were not well known outside their countries but very good signings.

Overall its not many considering the players that have left which is why I was unconvinced that a Flam replacement of similar quality would be bought and why I was pessimisstic about our chances of getting such a player on a budget.

Maybe AW will do it again but time is running out.

  98. Paul N,

I thought that 3rd was the best we could hope for this season. I still stick by that and am certainly not saying this as we lost 1 game.

I will never base hopes for a season on 1 loss. We lost to Leeds in August in 2001 and went on to do the double. The difference is that in 2001 we had a settled team that contained a number of world-class players.

I think my posts through the summer have been quite consistent in that I think the sqaud is not good enough. I haven’t changed my view. I was not that suprised about losing on Saturday (although I didn’t think we would play quite so badly) as the writing was on the wall with our previous poor performances.

  99. I’m afraid that quoting what Arsene has said and trying to decode it is a waste of time as he has already said a lot and none of it has come to pass. You all know the quotes as they have been re-cycled here often enough. Who wins the big prizes? The team with the best squad and manager who manages that squad in the most efficient way. In cricket, to judge how well the innings is going you always imagine the score with an extra 2 wickets down. In football, to judge a squad you should take 2 or 3 of the best players out as potential injuries. So Cesc, Adebayor and Clichy out for a few months then. Not so hot is it? We still have time to buy but I don’t see why this should be labelled as being a panic buy at all. Do not kid yourselves, there is money. If there isn’t then we are up shit creek, but there is also stubbornness and apathy and they are uncomfortable bedfellows. My very simple point is that, if we have no injuries at all and everyone plays at the top of their game for a whole season we will still be a top 4 side. But I am worried that short term thinking will see us not buying any more players and that will cost us more than just money in the long run. A top club always needs to be strengthening and once you stand still others will pass you. It’s a simple mans view, but it’s mine.

  100. I hear you, were you one who thought we would be out of the top four last year?

I Too remain consistent in that I belive we can win the PL, one game will not deter me aswell.

I dont have a problem with how you feel but you or I do not know either way how good we will be. I see the players w have as being great, however you dont, such is life.

  101. Paul N. If you are talking to me, no I was not on this site last year. You are right that I don’t know how good we will be. But I have eyes and have watched a lot of football in my life so, like everyone else I am entitled to an opinion. I am disappointed with Arsene because he says things that aren’t true and so does Fiszman. And when people do that I tend to loose confidence in them. Hill Wood I think just drinks too much after dinner Port and should learn to keep his mouth shut more.

  102. Alex, unless my maths is even worse than I thought, he does have 30 million, from player sales alone over the last 13 months – forget the tv revenue etc. Of course it’s possible that something drastic has suddenly happened and we’ve gone broke overnight, but at the moment the evidence is against it.

As you say – and as I’ve been saying for days – he’s exceedingly frugal and cautious. He likes to watch players for years and buy only when he considers he’s getting a bargain. My point is, wonderful though this tried-and-tested method has proved in the past, a bit of panic-buying wouldn’t come amiss, just for once, under these exceptionally dangerous circumstances. Fail to do it, and you’re risking a great deal more than 30 million. No, I wouldn’t buy the players you’ve named – I said so already – but I would at this point buy Arshavin. Which I’ve also said several times, so I’ll give up.

  103. http:// http://www.football365. co.za/story/0,22162,14287_4052237,00. html

“Senderos has gone to Milan today and will complete a medical,” said Wenger, whose side take on Steve McClaren’s FC Twente in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday night.

“At the moment, he does not get the games here, and so now he can play somewhere and remains in a top-level club.

“We have [Johan] Djourou, we have Kolo [Toure], we have Senderos, we have [Alex] Song, [William] Gallas and [Mikael] Silvestre now who can play centre-back so we have a congestion there.

“We want him to play without losing him.”

Senderos’ former Gunners team-mate Mathieu Flamini moved to the San Siro at the start of the summer.

Details of the deal for Senderos remain undetermined, with Wenger confirming: “It has not been decided yet whether the transfer will be permanent.”

  104. Guys, you have to realize that every club on planet earth knows we need a defensive midfielder and they will have the upper hand now either by tying their player we are after to a new contract or jacking up their price.

I think the problem really is that Wenger over trusts his players and some of them LIE…a good example of that FLAMINI, so don’t tell us Flamini was a mistake, we are mad at Ade for asking for more money after scoring 30 goals, Flamini did the same but left us… so f*ck him.

Let the man do his job, and we have a long way to go. If he give in to fans demands, we/he will never see the end of it. Fans will not chose the team sheet, and will never chose who we sign or not sign. So talk all you want, just don’t expect any one to listen.

  105. Paul N,

If you are talking to me; no I was not one of those who thought that we would finish out of the top 4 last year, nor this. I am more pessimistic this year though.

  106. Gio, again be easy dude. I was responding to Alex Ice Cream. read the previous posts.

Anyway, you have a right to ur opinion and I too have watched a lot of football, and?. You cannot judge the team based on what you have seen, two matches and how the hell can you judge anything correctly when all the peices have not played together? thats absurd, sorry. What has Arsene said that isnt true, he said he will buy, I will wait while the majority cry daily. I just cant be bothered with that. Things may not happen how we like but I really dont care and I have not lost any confidence in him at all as he is tried and proven.

Homey, I told you that I may disagree but will not attack you.

    Be good!!!

  107. Ok, thats good, but you do remember that many were. So I look for the same this year only with you being included in that pack as you have said. Its all good, I can see that you are a genuinely concerned fan as I many times see you are trying to be postive when you see it possible.

  108. Mia,

I have no problem with your maths. Ok £30m, minus £5m for “Gordon” Ramsey, £12m for “The New Zidane” Nasri, doubling Greedybayor’s wages and giving pay rises to Sagna and Clichy. Oh let’s not forget “Silvestre Stallone.”

This probably leaves a surplus of a few million for transfers. As I said probably about £10m.

  109. Gunner4ever

You are wrong to say that every gooner knows that we need a new DM. We didn’t need a new DM on Saturday we needed someone who could bring the attack into play or better still score a goal.
There is another faction of Arsenal supporter that thinks the priority is a goal scoring midfielder who can play along side Fabregas or replace him if he gets a serious injury.
We already have Song to play DM against the likes of Chelsea etc but we need another goal scorer to put the likes of Fulham to the sword.

  110. Paul N,

The gist of my posts consistently is that I felt that something was wrong which is why the squad is not as strong as it ought to be. Finance, stubborn AW, overpriced players? The truth is we don’t know and I have tried to make sense of it as best I can.

I do not consider myself a negative supporter at all. I believe I am being realistic about our hopes and dreams for the season ahead and as you say, I am concerned.

I am neither blindly following Wenger, nor want him out. I don’t worry about transfers – I assume that most won’t happen and look forward to the odd surprise. I am certainly not surprised about no Flam replacement.

We still have players to come back. We have to accept that we are not going to get any more than 1 player and will have to make do. If we can keep players fit and other can do a Flamini then who knows?

Things have to change quickly though. Let’s hope the genius of Cesc can revitalise us although I think our dependence on him is unhealthy.

  111. Where are the soothing words of Passenal when you need them?

  112. LONDON, I don’t think you listed to Wenger’s last conference call, he listed Song with the Cbacks not in Midfield. It is true we couldn’t link up play at Fulham because Denilson had a stinker, but normally he is good at linking the play. It’s our weakness of not being able to control Midfield due to not having a real DM who can get the ball back when we lost it, or cover the Cbacks when Gallas turn his a$$ to the ball.

  113. No matter the transfer situation we should not have lost that game if the boss selected and substituted uptimally.

  114. Alex Ice Cream,

no, how many more times? It’s not minus the fees for Nasri and Ramsey – those are calculated in – it is minus wages, of course, just as it’s minus debt-financing, policing, the players’ dinners, and every other expense. But based purely on the players-in and players-out ratio, we are in profit by about 30 million. That money doesn’t have to be spent on reinforcing the squad, but it presumably could be.

London, quite. Not everyone thinks a defensive midfielder is the priority.

  115. Things are not adding up & nobody seems to have any answers. PR from the club is contradictory & probably misleading.

Clubs like the Spuds, Villa, Newcastle, Man City etc have all attempted to improve their squads because they know that a good season & luck with injuries may, just may give them an outside chance of CL football next season.

They realise that once there , with TV revenue & the kudos of playing in the CL they can attract & pay top players therefore making qualification the next year that bit easier.

Now I`m all for balancing the books & staying within budget constraints but it appears to me that we are gambling with our top four place this season & once lost it may well be an extremely tough job to get it back.

Yes, we`ve no given right to it, & yes, we can`t match Man U or Chelsea on transfers but Liverpool realise what`s needed & give their manager money to compete.

It`s much more than the Fulham game. We had to start well this season & we haven`t.

Apologies for the rant & gloom – a good win tomorrow would make us all feel much better

I don`t advocate huge signings but we`re struggling. A couple of injuries & we have a poor midfield. If AW can`t get anyone why was Gilberto allowed to go for peanuts ?

  116. Gunner4ever

I cannot think of a single game when I have come away thinking that Denilson linked the play up well. I cannot think of a single game when I have come away thinking that Denilson defended well. The only good thing that came from the Fulham game was the proof that Denilson is not ready for that role and there is still enough time to do something about it.

  117. G4E,

Its a combination of both. We had no-one to break down play and in addition we had no-one who could control possession when we did get the ball – usually through bad passes by Fulham.

Flam was important for the former and Hleb for the latter. This is why I said in my previous posts that Hleb’s are big boots to fill. He may not score or even give the final pass but he keeps possession well and enables others to come into the game. Maybe he isn’t what we need as we need attackers who can score and he slowed the play down too much but his loss is a big one.

Without Hleb, Cesc and Tom we have no players who are capable of playing this playmaker/possession game. Its simple Cesc can play that game as he is a genius. Denilson can’t (yet, maybe never).

  118. Mia,

My mistake but “how many more times?” Please, I have only responded on this once so I don’t know why you have a problem.

OK I am doing the maths now. Bentley £7m, Hleb/Nasri zero, Diarra 5.5m, Berto £1m, Hoyte £3m that’s £16.5m and I admit I am struggling for the rest! Maybe a couple of youth players for a couple of mil. I would like to know the rest please.

Even if it is £30m many transfers are paid in installments so it could be used to pay for the transfers that were done a couple of years ago, Walcott, Tom, Hleb even.

  119. @California Gooner,

Great post. I know that there is a film coming out soon, featuring the great Feynman heading up the investigation of the Challenger. I’m not going to miss that one, despite being homebound with 2 kids.

It’s an interesting engineering analogy. I think it’s the case that any player who underperforms or is a weak link would spell consequences in terms of trophies. We have to ruthlessly weed out players who are not going to be PL or CL winning quality. Wenger has been accused of sentiment for keeping Senderos but he has finally killed that myth.

  120. Alex

    Excellent analysis; views I share.

  121. London, I agree with Alex more that it’s a combination of both but the need for someone to replace Flamini is more urgent to me. We signed Nasri as a direct replacement for Hleb, whether he can do Hleb’s job or not, that remains to be seen, Nasri only played two competitive games. Rosicky can also play in Cesc’s position, and it makes more sense if we play Rosicky a certain number of games where he can give Cesc the rest every once in a while during the long season.

As far as Denilson, I think it’s pretty unfair to say he didn’t have any games ever where he successfully linked play…one comes to mind against New Castle in the CC last year? I know he is not ready yet and how old is he?

  122. G4E,

We have Tom and Cesc and hopefully Nasri to play that possession/playmaker role so I agree that we need a Flam replacement more urgently as we have no defensive midfield players.

Its too soon for Denilson. There are not many 19yr old playmakers around. In fact I can only think of 1 at that age – Cesc.

  123. Well I’d suggest all of you to keep your crticism of wenger’s transfer policy at bay for now, since the transfer window hasn’t closed yet. There are six days, and if during this time no one comes in, you have the right to make judgments but not so soon. Yeah sure he’s been misleading us with his statments, but I’m sure it’s not that easy to get a player as we all think it is sitting infront of computer screens. And he said that we needed a midfielder, and there’s still time to go get one. Although a more growing concern for me is a right midfielder than a DM. But I don’t see anyone coming in at that front. And with Theo and Eboue there, most of our attacks from the right would be easy to quell. Anways, i rememer wenger stating few months back that he has a list of 5-8 players for every position. And I’m sure there are other players than are feeble minds can come up with(Alonso, Barry, Inler). Let’s just hope he turns out to be a signing in the league of Eduardo and Sagna. And if no one comes in, well, than lets all pray that we have an injury free season and players hit their form.

  124. Alex Mia Paulie,Muppett the whole thing is if we dont finish in the top four in means away games in Estonia, Finland etc. We must have some budget to strengthen the squad with a CM at least or lese if we have no one by the 31 st we should have a world day of national prayer by all AFC supporters to pray for a miracle

  125. Muppet,

I like the idea of “culling” players who are not good enough but how do you know whether they will be good enough especially at a young age?

If we did that we may have no players at all! Look how hard it has been for us to replace players.

Its a pretty tall order to be Prem/CL winning standard as a teenager or early 20s. Cesc is a genius and has driven up the bar for young players to levels that are almost impossible to reach. Henry was rubbish at 18 compared to Cesc, Zidane was only world-class when well into his 20s.

  126. G4E

Yes, Newcastle, you are right, as for Denilson’s age it is absolutely irrelevant. We are talking about saving our season, so he can either do it or he can’t and on the evidence so far it certainly looks as though he can’t.
I am sure you saw the WBA game; Eboue ran though the middle got to the 18 yard line and shot with pathetic results. He was too scared to even try against Fulham.
We need someone who is able to shoot (not Hleb) and score from that position.
This is my reason for saying that we need a midfielder who’s skills are best suited to scoring rather than defending.
And just because Wenger said that he sees Song as a CB rather than a DM does not change the fact that there is a faction of supporters that believe he is wrong.

  127. Alex,

Interesting points. I wasn’t calling for an outright cull, I was just mulling the point that if there is one outright weak link, it could spell disaster. Like the O-Ring.

On the point of development, you could have more faith. You keep lamenting the loss of Flamini, but we have three players under development – Diaby, Song, Denilson who may yet reach the performance levels seen by Flamini last year. After all, Flamini was here for 4 years and didn’t reach that level until he was 24.

  128. YW:
Too much weight is put into what Arsene says about transfers. I understand why, fans need reassuring.
I believe he is trying to get any of Ilner, Alonso, Barry or someone else.

If any of the target fail. Do you proclaim it to the media or do you keep quiet and try someone else?

It takes three to agree a transfer deal.
The selling club, the player and the buying club. Clubs aware of our situation may be pricing our targets out of range, and why not. Considering Liverpool with Torres are still willing to pay 20 million for Keane. European clubs now believe the EPL is awash with money and will do there utmost to milk us. I am willing to bet for Alonso Liverpool will be asking for up to or more than 20 million. (A good 8 million more than the player is worth)

  129. Ateeb

Rosicky will take right midfield/flank. Walcott has got untill he returns to prove that he can cut it which I do not expect that he will.

Of the many things that Rosicky can do that Theo can’t the most important is that he can defend. He adds steel to the defence. This will solve the Eboue problem because that is the only reason he gets picked.

I know that Rosicky usually plays on the left but I expect that role to be taken by either Vela (left footed) or Nasri.

  130. Alex IC,

I agree it must be difficult to judge young players. You are right about TH14 , Cesc etc & yet we are harsh about Denilson , Theo etc.

It was only 12 months ago when everyone thought Song was crap.

You have to believe AW knows far more than us but even he must have a tipping point (Liverpool for Senderos ?) when he decides there will be no more chances.

If any of our half dozen or more quality youngsters were put in to an experienced , confident side I`m sure they would look the business (remember Stephen Hughes) but we are asking too much right now.

  131. London, I guess we agree that Denilson is not ready to be a play maker – shooting star yet. That doesn’t mean we need to go out and buy an attacking midfielder – play maker when we have Cesc/Rosicky/Nasri? If we buy another one, and all of them are fit, who are you going to convince to warm the bench with 40K a week?

I too agree that Song is more of a defensive midfielder rather than a CB. But, if you listen carefully to what Wenger say, you’ll understand he thinks due to Song’s age and current physical strength, he can’t play 48 games as a DM, therefore he is using him as a CB because it’s less running and physical strain. I personally think the future of Song is DM, but currently he is not the answer for a long grueling season in DM position.

  132. London:
So basically you’re hoping that we would have an injury free season for our better players. I’m with you on that, that’s all we need. And maybe another midfield.

  133. William

I can only assume that you do not read the blogs very often or you would have picked up on the mood that most people are beyond caring about whether we get a midfield player at the right price, we just want one. Our season depends on it.

  134. No Ateeb I am saying that we have Rosicky to play on the right midfield/flank and if he is injured we have Walcott and if he is injured we have Eboue.

  135. G4L

We dont need Song to play every week in the same way that Flamini did. We need Song to play against the likes of Chelsea; we do not need him to play against WBA. In games like that we need a far more offensive midfield.
We have to stop trying to copy the Fabregas – Flamini midfield and think about improving it.

  136. G4L
We need two teams to do two different jobs, one for Chelsea (defensive) and one for WBA (offensive)

    Almunia
    Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy
    Song
    Fabregas
    Eboue, RVP, Adebayor, Rosicky

    Almunia
    Sagna, Song Djourou Clichy
    Fabregas Alonso
    Rosicky, RVP, Adebayor, Nasri/Vela

No £40 a week warming the bench there

  137. Alex,

I said it couple of times yesterday and earlier today, but I quite understand if you decided to scroll past my many doom-laden bad-tempered long posts!

My figures are based on the whole year (strictly speaking, the last 14-15 months), as I calculated from the opening of last summer’s window. I thought that would provide a more accurate picture than just looking at this particular window. Because it’s hard to be sure of the prices, I rounded my actual figure – 24 million profit – down to 20 to be on the safe side. Add to that the sell-on fee for Muamba – I guessed 1 million but actually I haven’t a clue – plus 9 million for Senderos and you get 30 million. OK, forget Muamba and Senderos as the money isn’t yet in the bank (and perhaps never will be) but as Wenger himself has said ‘30 million’ I assume my calculation isn’t far wrong.

  138. 40k obviously

  139. But walcott and eboue havent shown any signs of progress. And if rosiscky remains injured for more than 20 games, our subs are not really good enough to step up. And we know how costly a single weak link in a team can be.

  140. All you people do is argue about football. Why? The players at Arsenal now dont care about results or us fans, so why should us lot care for them. I hate saying it but my love for Arsenal and the game has gone, its not the same. I hate the game now, I havent got any passion in me to get angry about it anymore. Its not a sport its a business now, your not a supporter to Arsenal FC, your a customer. All it ever is with them is buy our kits, get our credit card, buy our shit over priced food. They fleece the fans to pay over priced prima donnas like Adebayor £100k a week. Im not gona be a mug and pay their bloody wages anymore. Look at what our Olympians achieved in China, some of them on next to no money, they had dedication and amazing heart and spirit and they made me bloody proud to be British. It makes premier footballers moaning about wages look even more of a disgrace. Football is finished for me, I will be spending my time and money watching sports that our rewarding and worthwile from now on. Rant over now, sorry folks buts it how I feel and I wanted to get it off my chest.

  141. Ateeb

Rosicky is rumoured to be a only a few weeks away. I am obviously a big Rosicky fan and believe that he is going to make a huge difference.

  142. London, no William clearly doesn’t read the blogs very often. If he did, he’d have known that the Inler deal fell through about a fortnight ago.

I think Sol’s day of world prayer is our last hope.

  143. Goodbye Realist

I am third generation Arsenal season ticket holder and I will be supporting the team that I love.

  144. Goodbye London. Your welcome to it. Try watching cricket. A sport that still has its integrity, sportsmanship and respect.

  145. Lets play a game. If you had to pick a team to play Chelsea and all our players were fit what would it be?

  146. Realist

You have just given the three reasons why England never win anything. It’s funny what happens in countries like Italy where they don’t have cricket, but that’s another story.

Realist, come back when Arsenal are winning again.

  147. It would be a game involving a load a greedy money grabbing mercenarys deciding which of their ten cars to drive or which of their five houses to sleep in.

  148. Please wenger Stephen Appiah, please! it wont happen so I wont waste my breath.

I am praying we dont finish lower than 4th. that would have catastrophic ramafications on the club. we NEED that money, and our best players would leave. cesc would go straight away. I wonder if wenger would hang onto his job in that situation? Its a very real proposition with the current squad.

I still think we need a hardman DM. this player helps the team play. at fulham we did not earn the right to be creative because we didn’t have enough bite in midfield. I mean I agree that your DM has to be a good footballer as well, they have to be able to pass and move and even shoot ideally…as I said Stephen Appiah please.

  149. Realist

I like cricket and I dont want to argue with you but are you sure you are on the right site?

  150. Paul N. You asked me what Arsene has said that isn’t true. He told us last year that he would only bring in super, super quality players. He said at the AGM that the squad did not win the PL last year because of a lack of experience and that he would add 3 experienced players this transfer window. He said, also at the AGM, that he would be adding a dominant centre-half this transfer window. He said at the end of last season that our transfer business would be done within 3 weeks and that fans would be reassured by what they would see. As yet none of these things have happened unless you think of Silvestre as a dominant centre half. After the last game against Twente he said that there would certainly be a player coming in before the return match but not before the Fulham game. Now that may well be happening tonight or tomorrow morning so I reserve comment. I haven’t seen the team play together twice either. I watched the majority of them play the entire season last year and my feeling is that the squad is weaker this year.

  151. Today England went 2-0 up in a one day series versus South Africa who are one of the best teams in world cricket, not bad for a team that doesnt win anything. Friday I will be at the Oval and sunday at Lords watching a real sport. A sport where the you sit next to an opposing fan without fear of getting beat up, a sport where you can enjoy a drink in your seat, a sport that gives me a whole days entertainment for less than it costs to watch Arsenal for 90 minutes.

  152. Oh and by the way if Arsenal start winning again I wont be back, I couldnt care less. And, yes, im on the right site.

  153. Is this is a surreal moment.

I’m on here, trying to digest what people are saying and on comes someone calling themselves ‘Realist’ and starts blathering on about cricket.

Realist – are you serious ? You can shove cricket where the sun doesn’t shine mate.

While you are at it. Why don’t you call yourself fatalist and go and seek treatment. This is a forum for Arsenal supporters, normally those taking an active interest in the weekly performances of Arsenal FC. This means that cricket and the olympics are not included in this activity, however noble these activities maybe.

So why don’t you find a cricket forum, an olympic forum or a forum for those who want to complain about the injustice in the world caused by large money football transfers and the gap between the rich and the poor.

  154. Muppet. Another surreal moment coming up. I agree with you.

  155. Hello Gazzap
If Wenger bought Appiah I wouldn’t complain but to me it is the WBA game that we learn where the problem really is. We cannot finish teams off and a hard man DM would not have helped. A flamini would not have helped. I’m not even convinced we needed a hardman DM against Fulham; we were not over run.
The problem was that we didn’t have any link up play or midfield goal threat. We need someone to add to the goal scoring tally not break the play up, Song can do that against the likes of Chelsea. Think Spain in the Euros.

  156. We’ll finish second!

Egg chucking will have to wait till May……..

  157. Mia,

I do read your posts, rest assured. I write long posts as well so I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t read the other posts. I read them all! I like to read them even if I disagree.

Ok back to business, we agree that it is £20-24m minus Seneros and Muamba. This could have been swallowed up by wages Ade, Sagna, Clichy as we mentioned before, TH’s £10m singing-off fee, increase in property costs as I mentioned and paying of previous transfers.

Even if we use £25m it is clear that its not that much. I still think we have about £10m plus wages to spend on a player for this season. I don’t like this anymore than you do and I agree that we need another winger (which was being discussed throughout last season but then abandoned for some reason) but it isn’t going to happen.

We shouldn’t be in this situation but we are. Like you I could take it better if we got some transparency about what is going on.

  158. Gio, so the transfer time is over? how do you know that the reason he didnt buy a CB is because he thought Djourou was good enough? Whether you like Silvestre or not, maybe Wenger sees him as a good defender and one of those exoerienced players. How do you know whether Arsenal were trying to buy players and it didnt work out. All of this is so silly to me. He has bought I think five players so far. Yes many are young but Nasri and Silvestre are ready I’m sure.

I just wish Wenger would say nothing at all, because us fans do not realize that there are many things that may cause a situation to change. Instead of saying we have Nasri, Vela, Ramsey, Wilshire, Djourou, Song, Diaby, Denilson and wait upon the signing to come, not to mention we never know how good Silvestre will be, we cry and complain about what has not happened yet, even though there is still a possibilty. Oh and Wenger did say he was buying at least one more player, no?

No matter what anyone says we are speculating, but what I saw last year gives me great hope!

    Be good my friend.

Any time a lot of money is at stake, situations may not be as straight forward, remember that.

    Be easy!!!

  159. gazzup,

I’d take Appiah now even though I have never really rated him that highly. Its desparation and the fact that he is better than what we have, which in terms of a DCM is none!

Agree with the need to earn the right to play but even if we did we had no-one to do anything with the ball once we had it.

We looked poor at the back-poor goal conceded, utterly nowhere in midfield and toothless upfront.

Hopeless but hey there is another game tomorrow and Cesc will be back for the weekend. We rely on him more than we did Henry

  160. FELLOW TRAITORS This guy Realist is changing our outlook we will need to learn the MCC rules or Realist needs to Google Arsenal Football Club to see what its all about

  161. ICECREAM unfortunately the original PR about the stadium got us hoping now its all a mirage,

I only hope that everybody doesnt get carried away if we beat Twente and Newcastle its 38 PL games and 14 games in the ECL that count

  162. Paul N,

Big respect for keeping the hopes up! Its not that I don’t have them but you articulate hope regularly and lucidly, so I salute you.

    I am looking forward to Cesc’s return….

Agree that Wenger should say less also.

  163. PAULN We alll want less PR and more action

  164. It seems for once we are all in agreement.

  165. PLEASE NO MORE PR

“I believe strongly that we can win the Champions
League because of what I see in training and because I believe we have the quality to do it.”

The Frenchman has also declared that he is happy with his first-team squad, despite a clear lack of transfer activity at the Emirates.

  166. sol,

Agreed it was a mirage but it doesn’t mean that the next one won’t be real.

At the moment we are struggling as we have discussed at huge length but maybe in a few years the Emirates will really start to deliver.

Its of little consolation now but what we can we do?

You have been a Gooner even longer than I have and we will always be Gooners. We can bitch and moan (and we do!) and we can have a laugh at ourselves as “fellow traitors” (funny!) or whatever but we will always be Gooners. We cannot influence things like the stadium much either but our support in unequivocal.

We may even buy someone we’ve heard of for more than £5 by the 1st Sept but I am not exactly staying up all night for updates.

  167. sol,

I am laughing at your latest AW quotes. I am not even sure why!

  168. Alex IC,

It would be nice if there was transparency, but you know as well as anyone that this is not possible given they way Arsenal operate.

In an ideal world, it would be great to be told, this summer we have a budget of £35M. Imagine all the agents and foreign mercenaries licking their lips. Even worst, imagine the current squad sizing up the incoming players and then banging on the door of AW, cap in hand.

By the way I fundamentally disagree with your pessimistic analysis of our financial situation at 3.56. I haven’t had time today to fully digest it, but it seems to me that you have ignored some important facts, such as our much improved turnover in 2007-2008, and you don’t appear to have cited any definitive facts, in your rather bleak diagnosis. I’m not a red rose tinted optimist, but until we get some hard data on completion of these units, then it is hard to draw conclusions.

  169. Mia,

I was out most of the day yesterday, so I confess that I didn’t read your posts from then. I read all the posts if I am around a computer, which is pretty often.

  170. Muppet,

I agree that transparency would be nice but it is a difficult balancing act and too much could cause a problem. Its great for us to know but it could be used to our disadvantage by others or frighten the plastic supporters. Its still frustrating though.

I agree turnover increased but we had a huge wage bill also that year. I did use some figures the £25m that the AST commented on and the £41m increased debt on property is in the accounts.

As I said, I am trying to make sense of the situation and this best fits what we have seen happening regarding transfers, Dein and the economy. I do not think this is a long-term problem however. It could mean a couple of years until we know for sure that the flats are sold and that the increased turnover starts to make an impact.

The default issue is one based on the fact that lending criteria especially on new-builds is much tighter now and this could impact on completions. This is true, its just a question of whether the flats are affected by this or not.

Agreed that some of this is speculation and the accounts are out-of date now so we’ll have to see next year’s. As you say its difficult as we don’t know the whole story. I am trying to fill in some blanks.

  171. Alex IC,

Don’t know if you saw this article on ANR:

    http://www.arsenalnewsreview.co.uk/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,detail,0&cntnt01articleid=1034&cntnt01origid=30&cntnt01returnid=42

According to the article, 550 buyers have completed out of 600. The remaining 47 will be completed soon.

    According to the article:

“If all goes to plan and the level of completion defaults is low Arsenal should net at least £100m which will repay the £50m debt facility and one assumes be allocated to squad investment (to cover both transfers and wages).”

If this is true, then there isn’t a default issue, as you describe, unless the 50 uncompleted units have been affected by the credit crunch.

The amusing thing is that people keep saying that Arsenal have been the least active in the transfer market, at least that’s what I heard, verbatim, on Sky Sports News yesterday. I know that Arsenal have only signed 1 experienced player, but they have brought in now 5 in total (including Vela). Too many sensationalist stories.

  172. Paul N. I too think this is silly and it has worn me out. Goodbye.

  173. Muppet,

I did read the article and it made me feel a lot better but the completion dates keep being moved – my mate is completing on a flat soon- so until its all finalised I still have a few doubts. As you say the article says “if all goes to plan” and there are 50 other flats also.

This should be resolved in the next 6mths- 1 year and hopefully there will be no problem. The economic situation could make the already cautious board even more cautious and we will not get the money until completion which may be causing a short-term cash-flow issue. Maybe they are just not taking any chances until it all gone through. Again I am not sure.

    F*** Sky news!

  174. Alex IC,

You have a point. I’ve made 3 major house moves, 2 of them took 13 months apiece.

Hitting the sack. Dreaming of a fit Rosicky, Diaby, Fabregas and Nasri in the midfield…. Dreaming is the word…

  175. “PLEASE NO MORE PR

“I believe strongly that we can win the Champions
League because of what I see in training and because I believe we have the quality to do it.”

The Frenchman has also declared that he is happy with his first-team squad, despite a clear lack of transfer activity at the Emirates.”

Even though it is clear you are the one not happy with the squad not him!! Good spin solgooner, all the reasons why we want you as our leader .FFS.

  176. Given Arsene’s reluctance to spend the funds available to him even though it’s glaringly obvious to everyone else that we need to buy a midfielder….
I am beginning to wonder if he is holding a stake in Arsenal, hence the reluctance to spend what might go to the shareholders.
Either that or Arsene’s pay is in some way tied to Arsenal’s P&L.
Otherwise, his behaviour just does not make sense.

  177. Arsenal is suffering because of the preference to buy foreign players for every position. Foreign players don’t play with their hearts. They have no love. It’s the money and they don’t care what happens to the club.

Eboue will prefer to fall down and complain than to put his foot in and fight for the ball. I’ll prefer Kevin Nolan to Denilson any day why? because I know he’ll fight on end and will not destabilise the club at the end of the season.

Let’s get some English/British regulars in. Let’s get Michael Johnson or Noble nd forget about the Alonso’s and the Inler’s who won’t fight for the Arsenal when the going gets tough.

Just look at how avergae players like Fletcher, O’ Shea and Brown fight hard for MANU. We don’t have that and we need to reverse policy.

  178. You forgot to close with “Long Live the Queen” Howard :)
    ===

I don’t understand people sometimes. I think the easiest thing in the world would be to spend someone else’s money. It is so easy to pay 30 million in a player that may give you nothing in return…Shevchenko any one? It take great time and great effort to find the right player. We never buy a player only based on their name or talent alone, it’s always based on a combination of attributes, Talent, Character, desire and ambition for success not just for money. How many players are around with these attributes? Not so many, I guess that’s why clubs are always after our players young and old.

If I base my success on something I don’t have, I may never succeed. If I believe I have what it takes, I may have a better chance.

    G4E

  179. What about real action???

    let’s have the balls!!!
to field our dream team now instead of shopping around !!!

let’s put our dream team together !!

    Fabianski
    Sagna Gallas Song Clichy(c)
    Wilshere Ramsey Cesc Vela
    Nasri Adebayor

    I want 4-5-1 tonight

I WANT WENGER TO STOP THE ROT AND GIVE THE REAL YOUNGSTERS A CHANCE .

I don’t need Eboue, Van Persie, Walcott

  180. Time for Action: Sell Denilson, RvPersie

They are useless, they have been in action forever and are still useless

    (with $$$ get a DM + Attacking Midfielder )

  181. or all crazy, our squads got depth. sell denilson, get reall. the lads got so much potential. sell rvp. you really dont have a clue. watch what arsenes doing you fools. are you really that blind. im happy as hell with our squad and so are many reall arsenal fans. its young, tech brilliant, athletic in more ways than one and ready to explode. think the signs from the newcasstle game showe that. just believe, its exciting times for us gunners. now c’mon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
