Silvestre? A Half Decent Rumour And Arsene Defends Theo

The dailies are getting desperate; FC Twente is in one week’s time and Arsene has not let them have any hints about the new signing he promised so they gone way out into the left field and come up with Mikael Silvestre from United. It would be an unusual signing, not simply from the perspective of someone leaving United to join Arsenal, but that he is thirty-one years of age, a proven winner and vastly experienced.

As far as the player goes, it is mixed emotions. He has very high plus points. Until he was struck down by injury in recent seasons, Silvestre was United’s first choice centre back. Since that time though, he has become shorn of confidence after some high-profile mistakes were made; it would be a question to ask him if he plays under both Wenger and Ferguson which of them is better at rebuilding confidence in a player. His experience would be a massive boost to the defence which despite the potential of Djourou and Song, is something that is missing. It would allow them and Traore on the left to develop at a more ‘natural’ pace. Silvestre would also bring cover to the left without disrupting any central defensive pairing.

Of course, such a player would leave question marks about the futures of others, particularly Senderos. A summer in which rumours about his future have already been fielded, the signing of a centre back who would automatically be considered one of the top three at the club would bring more conjecture on the Swiss International’s career plan. Signing Silvestre would also be a ‘Get Out Of Jail Free‘ card for Arsene in his quest to bring in a central midfielder as it would allow Djourou to battle for the defensive role with Denilson and seemingly, Eboue.

The final plus point is that Silvestre has Champions League experience and is not cup-tied so in that sense his signing fits together. However, question marks must remain about his fitness. He may well have recovered from the injuries that have plagued him in recent times but we have a defence that is well versed with the medical facilities at London Colney so it is questionable as to whether another player of that ‘ilk’ is needed. Countering that is the obvious that a medical ought to satisfy the immediate question of fitness and in any case the purchase of any player is fraught with the risk of injury as we have already seen this summer with Nasri.

There will of course be some who question why we would sign someone who is effectively a United reserve; ‘if he is not good enough to get into their first team then why would he be good enough to get into ours?’ they might argue. The answer to that is the consistency shown by Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic. If they dropped their levels then there is little doubt that Silvestre would get into the side. Forty French caps are not earned lightly which is an indicator of his abilities. If the rumours are true, you would have to say that he would be, on paper, as good a short-term signing as Arsene could make for defensive cover.

Arsene has been on the back foot somewhat this week, first of all defending Emmanuel Adebayor and today it is Theo Walcott’s turn to receive the backing of his manager,

I am not worried. You have to give them time. He is 19 years old. Theo is not yet completely there, but he can make decisions in big games. That will always be his strength. He is a boy who will always make progress, because he is intelligent and he knows where he wants to get and that is why I believe you have to patient with him

There has been some justified criticism of his performances thus far this season but a sense of perspective in that is needed. In Arnhem, he played on the left of midfield which is not his ideal position. Sure he might occupy that ‘channel’ when playing for England Under-21’s but his primary role is as centre forward at that level. The other key issue is that the team has not been firing on anything like all cylinders yet has still won two games, both with clean sheets. In the past, we have seen criticism of them not being able to grind out results when matters on the pitch are not going their way. This season, so far, that has been recitified to a certain extent. You cannot have it both ways.

Still, at least The Guardian has kept up the summer of lacklustre rumours by mentioning Barry, Alonso and Inler in the article. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose indeed.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Silvestre??? Scary!!!

  2. I’ve changed my opinion. I hear it would be a 0.75 Million pound move. For a proven albeit old player, not bad.

  3. The season is a game old. Leave the kid alone. As for Silvester, i would rather play Senderous. I trust Arsene to raise some eyebrows by this time next week. Keep up the good work mate. COME ON THE GUNNERS

  4. 31 isn’t old for a defender. Although I’m not keen on former Manc’s joining us, we have to be realistic. To replace an inexperienced squad player with an experienced one, sounds like good business to me. One potential fly in the ointment is whether he expects to be a first choice player?

  5. Passenal

I cannot believe he thinks that there is such a thing as an ‘automatic’ choice any more. Mind you, looking at Gallas and Toure over the past few seasons, he would probably think on getting a good 20 – 30 games with their injury records and ‘loss of form’.

    YW

  6. 31 years old; fitness not proven. Must be because he’s all that Arsenal can afford. A Would Silvestre sign a 1-year contract? Arsenal doesn’t sign old men on long contracts.

  7. Arsenal and its Bord directors , managers have realy tempted to anoiy its funs this particuler season

Try to ” Sought to the top of your voice ” after me Silvester for wh*************t ! ! ! ! !

  8. I can’t believe Wenger would even consider buying this waste of space. I would be gutted if we got him as I have never liked him. Once a Manc always a Manc. Why are Man “scum” United letting him go? Because he is past it, but lets be honest was he ever with it. We will never win the League or anything else with Silvestre in the team. I take it if he did join he would be offered a 1 year deal as he is over 30. 1 year to long if you ask me. I’ll be taking a break from Football this year if we get him as Wenger would have lost the plot.

  9. RIDICULOUS..

No way must sylvestre be signed. An error prone player with no scope of getting better,SORRY. I would want a defender in but if its sylvestre then all I can say is SAVE THE MONEY..

I wont say too much now until I am sure this is not another tabloid tale.

  10. Oh dear lord. Well, at least he’s experienced. Safer choice than Traore or Justin Hoyte, and um…

*If* this one is true, I really hope Wenger’s planning a double signing this week. You know, rough with the smooth.

  11. If he’s fit, would be a good signing. Though haven’t seen much of him in recent years obviously (no one has), does he still have his pace? If he’s close to the player he was, then getting rid of understudy (and general all-round no-hoper) Hoyte for £3m and bringing in a man of this ability and experience for £750k is v.good business. Especially as Gallas is due another 3-month lay-off about any day soon, every time that guy sprints I have to watch through little gaps between my fingers.

  12. If bought, I think Silvestr would be used as Clichy cover.

I don’t really understand the assumption that he would play CB, let alone first choice CB. Nor do I understand the assumption that this would mean Senderos leaving. Why would Wenger bring in a 31 one year and sell a 23 year old with talent who he clearly believes in? Besides, last season Senderos made fewer costly mistakes than either Gallas or Toure.

  13. Didn’t he headbutt Ljungberg once? That notwithstanding, I think this would be a good signing.

  14. Jesus people…. Get a grip here!!!!

On one hand everyone’s saying that we need another CB with experience and on the other we’ve got people saying they’re gonna take a break from football if we sign Silvestre (?).

Altho he may not be the best player in the world and 31, surely he’s exactly what we need in the short term? He can easily fit into a number of positions without effecting our up and coming players.

  15. Senderos is worth 1.5 chances per game to the opponents – Silvestre is worth 2.7 chances per game.

    Just to horrible to contemplate.

Is this another way to generate money? Get Silvestre for pennies and then flog Senderos for a few pennies more? Surely not? but Arsenal’s behaviour makes us doubters.

  16. Silvestre is pure shiite. You have to be if Gary Neville’s better than you.

He’ll be the first Arsenal player I’d boo every game. This guy’s not good enough for us, and wasn’t at his peak. Best proof of it is that he never even really made the France team. He’s one of Red Nose’s happy savages, who’d play consistent shite consistently with a good attitude for the cause.

I’d faint if Arsene bought him.

I suspect it’s a bait and switch to deflect attention from some other transaction we’re up to, or to even push up his price as he seeks a move away from Auld Trashford.

  17. I have no opinion about Silvester per se. However, I have written in the past about the idea that we should sign an older, utility defender who would do a job for a year or two, but not stop the development of our younger players.

  18. Mr Scooch…

When we say we need CB with experience, we are referring to a CB who is good and is in the age bracket of 24-28, not washed up error prone, man utd crap like sylvestre. We cant buy just for the sake of it.

Supposing we buy 35 year old thuram, he will have experience but it wont help our squad. we need a CB who is good, experienced and not That old. Buying titus bramble wont help either…

  19. maybe as cover for cliche but cant see him getting a game otherwise.

  20. Seems a good move to me. It provides short term cover until Nordvelt is ready to play in the first team. As Wenger said he does not want to buy where he will block the progress of his younger players and Silvestre will not do that

  21. No thanks. He is 31 and hit his peak (not that high a peak either) long ago. I never really rated him to be honest. Buying him would just destroy any chance of Senderos or Djourou making it. I mean imagine how you would feel being on the cusp of creaking the first team at 21/22 and then this manc comes in. It would shatter you.

I reckon we are after Corluka and the paper got it mixed up.

  22. IF HE COMES, IT WILL BE ON FREE TRANSFER COZ HE WAS GRANTED THAT BY UTD HIS SUMMER.SO ALL OF U SHOULD QUIT COMPLAINING COZ HE WILL MAKE A GOOD SQUAD PLAYER WITH LOTS OF EXPERIENCE

  23. DeiseGooner, I don’t necessarily agree that he blocks Djourou or Senderos. . It could be as you say. But in the best of cases, he pushes them, hopefully teach them something, wins a title, and then moves to Spain. Djourou played well on Saturday, but pretty much everyone was happy with the idea of bringing in a CB before that, and we definitely need cover for Clichy. So, a player like this fits well.

  24. clearly the tiny price tag is the incentive here. you get cover for next to nothing. big question is what happens to senderos and does this mean even fewer chances for Djourou and even possibly Toure? personally, all I wanted wenger to do this summer was to put JD in front of PS in the pecking order because I really beleive JD is good enough.
silvestre may be bought for LB cover only, now Gibbs has gone and Traore is considered more a winger.
worst thing for me is that he is united scum. I have hurled abuse and booed him before and now I have to cheer him. It doesn’t seem right. I think he is better than Wes Brown, but not as good as Vidic and Rio. What I dont want is another injury prone player sitting in the treatment room picking up £20k a week or more.

Would much rather we spend money on a player like Appiah who claims he is available. at 27, he is not finished but wont get in the way of our 19 year olds when they are ready to come through in a couple of years time.

  25. YW as usual, fantastic.

I for one am plse with the possible signing of Silvestre. Experienced, low price, and if AW can work his magic will coax a few more good years from him. He has won before and is a winner. I know I have seen him make mistakes but he comes back well. My one concern is has he got over his injuries yet? If yes, a master stroke from AW again.

    Up The Arse!!!

  26. As long as Silvestre is not our final signing of the season but an addition to the squad who can come off the bench for last 20 minutes, as well as cover us at full back the its worth the gamble.

  27. I know he’s a Manc and we all dislike him for it but he could provide decent cover across the back four. He has the experience and was a good player not so long ago. Injuries are the big problem though and with all the injuries that we have at the club it would be risky to bring in another companion for Diaby, Tom and Robin.

We still need another central midfielder though. Maybe Silvestre will allow Djourou or Song to play in midfield? I still hope that we buy another midfielder but we’ll have to wait and see.

  28. If he was any good fergie would NEVER sell him to arsenal. Remember his wrangle with liverpool over HEINZE. Fergie eventually got his way and heinze went to real madrid even though the player wanted to join liverpool.

If he does come we can be sure that fergie believes silvestre is crap.

…And whatever fergie might be, HE IS NOT A FOOL.

  29. Silvestre can score. At the right end and the wrong end as well.

  30. Not necessarily a bad signing as he brings much needed cover at the back and he can play both in LB abd CB positions. He has EPL and CL experience. At the same time, he is not a threat to Senderos or JD as he will bugger off in 1 or 2 years time.

Naga Gunner – Fergie probably did not imagine that he would move to Arsenal (or that Arsenal would want him) when he pomised him the free transfer. Something like what happened to us with Sol Campbell

  31. According to Myles Palmer, Silvestre is at Highbury House now, signing a contract.

Looks like there is a lot of divided opinion on this one. LOL.

I always thought Silvestre was a good player, but the injuries are a question mark.

  32. What a bizarre prospect… an ex Chelsea/Man Utd CB pairing… who’d have thought…

I can’t say that my heart is happy with the prospect, but speaking from the head, if Silvestre really is willing and available at that [or no] cost, then I really don’t see how we can turn him away, not with his experience and ability. People are quick to point out he has made mistakes… but what 30+ year old defender hasn’t? At present we’ve got a 20+ year old CB waiting in the wings who’s rather fond of a high profile mistake. I know who I’d prefer in a big game. And not getting in a team ahead of an undeniably superb Man Utd defence is hardly a sign of inability.

Short of buying another, better defender, which just won’t happen, where else is the needed experienced defensive cover coming from?

    It’s good business.

  33. If we sign him and sell big Phil then for me its good business, as I just dont think Phil will ever be good enough.
Sunderland and City must be after a centre back now so there is a market for PS. To give clichy a decent rest as well then this is a good signing but I dont regard Silvestre as a first team player.

  34. I still don’t know what to make of it. This signing (if it goes through) reminds me of Oleg Luzhny. Silvestre’s as unglamorous a player as you can find, but he has a role to play.

The idea of fishing around in ManU’s leftover pile makes me feel a bit queasy, that’s all.

I guess one of the first questions Wenger would be asked at Silvestre’s unveiling is whether he’s the last signing of the summer. Then things will be clearer.

  35. I don’t really see any problem with signing him. He will do a good job and will not mind beeing a squad player. He can play across the backline and provide cover.
I just hope that this is not our final signing. Like everybody is saying: we desperatly need a DM and we would be in all kinds of problems if we dont get a player in. You can preach all u want about Diaby; injured and unproven, Denilson; not proven enough and honestly not ever convinced me, he’s been decent in the pre-games and did OK against WBA, but decent isn’t good enough, Song; not proven, but can possible do a good job, but maybe better as CD, Ramsey;not proven, possibly do a good job, and so on. Is this the midfield that we want? A bunch of players who possible, maybe, perhaps can do some good work…
The DM position is so vital to any team, that to trust these players for a whole season would be suicide. This is our weakest link compared with the other top 4 clubs.

  36. If this story is true, then I would think this will be the last summer signing. We will have cover at the back and Toure will be pushed to DM role in some of the tougher games.

Though, where does that leave Eboue? I wont be too suprised if we see him spelling Almunia for some games – after all, Wenger thinks he can play anywhere!

  37. daokta..

He is NOT a free agent. the official man utd site has corrected those reports.

    http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid={B4CEE8FA-9A47-47BC-B069-3F7A2F35DB70}&newsid=6616425

  38. Thanks for the clarification NagaGunner.

Mind you, we may be all jumping the gun here for Arsene does not normally sign anyone +30.

However, I still think this would be a good deal for Arsenal

  39. Naga – As we know from the Ramsey deal, their official web-page is as reliable as a promise from Cronaldo. Slur Alex may have agreed to release Silvestre from his contract to let him find another club.

  40. This is very strange. Were will he play? Left back? Where does that leave Traore? Left mid? Who is going to play on the right side of defence if Sagna gets injured? And what about central midfield? I don’t understand this yet.

  41. I cant for the life of me see the sense in this signing if it is true. My mind boggles.

  42. There are some question marks concerning fitness, length of contract & Man U selling him but I`m not against this signing purely as it`s cover for Clichy

  43. I never liked him personally.. always seemed one of the more clumsy Man Utd players who always gets caught out. If Wenger does actually see him bringing quality to this team i will be very dissapointed.. as back up i think we are better off buying like we have been with younger players who are ready and enthusiastic to step up.

Otherwise we should have just bought Thuram in the summer… he has more quality and more reliable. This guy is a wasteman.

  44. I think Arsenal look weak compared to Manu and chelski. Too many youngsters – last season we played well until the the end when we lost points -which I think most people didnt expect including Arsenal fans.

I would strengthen 3 positions- Central defence, Defensive midfiled and possibly a top flight goalkeeper – Almunia is ok but is he going to win us points like Cech or Schmeical -the old united goalie.

thats my thought – think we’ll finish 4th maybe 3rd.

  45. GAZZAP once again you and I think alike getting Sylvestre selling Senderos is idea we still have DJ and Song and it balances Wengerspin budget so then he can get a midfielder in the 10-12 million range BUT I WOULD BE PISSED IF THIS IS HIS BIG SIGNING BEFORE TWENTE GAME

  46. Let’s wait and see if it actually happens before getting too worked up about it, whatever we might think.

  47. BIG SIGNING… what a joke it will be if it is SYLVESTRE

He will prob get paid by Fergie to let as many goals in as possible for us! I dont think we will get a defender anyway thats why i think this rumour is complete and utter crap.

We all know we need a midfielder, that is where we are light, Hoyte has gone yes.. but what habe we lost… he played in about 5 important games a year and that is when we had no other choice but to play him.

Wenger will now have to use Toure & Eboue at RB cover, bring in a midfielder.. improving the quality both at RB and DM. Hoyte was one of them fringe players who we couldnt rely on, he has no real quality like Senderos has shown at times, Song, Denilson.. they have all shown more promise.

  48. Isnt it funny all the Arsene Know”s gang on here are now questioning him for trying to sign Silvestre.Make ypur minds up either Arsene does know or he doesnt.

I think Sivestre has experience and is a winner.Unlike most of our players For £750,000 a decent gamble.

I think Senderos will go to Newcastle if they come in with an offer of about £6m

  49. Hey guys.. this is the type of experience CB back up that we need when we get hit by a spate of injuries. He has been there and done that both in the EPL and internationally. At 31 he is not too old to be a CB and do not mind being a squad player and perhaps even fighting for first team. Plus he can play LB and more importantly he is not pricey. If he is pass his injuries and has regained full fitness I am happy for the buy.

    Up The Arse!!!

  50. I agree with Arsebolg’s comment about Silvestre. What a waste of valuable time buying a reject from the mancs. You can keep the useless twat as far as I am concerned.

  51. PSB: “Isnt it funny all the Arsene Know”s gang on here are now questioning him for trying to sign Silvestre.Make ypur minds up either Arsene does know or he doesnt.”

What a load of utter bilge!

Any clear-minded reader of this thread can see that those who are questioning this supposed signing comprise a variety of Arsenal supporters, encompassing BOTH the harsher critics and the more optimistic of AW supporters. That’s pretty obvious to anyone without biased eyesight, like you have.

Second, you finally come out and attack everyone here who supports Arsene Wenger as mindless, robotic AKBs and scold and lecture them for questioning him. It’s YOU who chooses to see all Wenger supporters as mindlessly incapable of criticizing and questioning the manager. Apparently, you can’t imagine a supporter who’s also capable of questioning AW’s decisions. You see it all in black-and-white terms. Typical AKN Le grove totalitarian thinking.

As for Silvestre…surely this isn’t true? I’m still absorbing this…I’m too shocked at the idea to even be coherent about it. Everyone’s already given the pros and cons. I’m just stumped.

  52. Guys, guys, guys….

To me, the Silvestre thing is pretty black and white.

If we also sign a DM, then we have nothing to lose.

Silvestre costs next to nothing, has plenty of Prem and CL experience and can cover left back and centre back.

However, if he is our final signing of the summer, then i would have to question AW’s judgement on this one……

  53. chris GOONA..

“BIG SIGNING… what a joke it will be if it is SYLVESTRE”

“He will prob get paid by Fergie to let as many goals in as possible for us!”

    Well said.

silvestre never used to miss any chance to slate us while at united

We might as well get SOL back.

  54. http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,13320_4018909,00.html

  55. Malaysiangunner..

mate, NO OFFENCE.. but we need GOOD, experienced centre back. we cant buy simply for the sake of it. If that was the criteria to buy then TITUS BRAMBLE would fit the bill as well.. he also has prem experience.

If we are not to buy quality then we might as well, as I said above, Save the money..

    cheers

  56. Bottomline on silvestre by Man utd blogger..

“Either way, thanks Mickey. You’ve been a bit clown like these past few years but we appreciate the service rendered.”

the term “clown” aptly describes the PRESENT status of the player. He is not even second choice at united and has been THEIR version of senderos in recent years.

Have we become a second rate club to adopt their over the hill rejects?

  57. naga, I’m not supporting this signing but I do think he’s better than Wes Brown, who Ferguson rates well enuf to be a 2nd choice defender.

  58. There are plenty of bloggers on Man U sites today who think it would be a good deal for Arsenal, as well as the ones who do not – it is down to your personal opinion on the player.

Just because one blogger says he is a clown, doesnt mean anything.

I refer to my previous post for my thoughts on te matter.

If we can seal the deal for Inler as well, suddenly our squad looks pretty healthy.

  59. Guys,

If he can prove his fitness then Silvestre can provide much needed experience and cover at the back.

If this is the signing that AW promised to go with his statement in May that the fans will be pleased with our signings or he is bought to be first choice, I will be livid!

  60. true Matt, here’s another MU blogger posting on an Arsenal site:

“I think this makes sense for all parties. He is 31, and his best days are behind him, but … he can do a job. You need exactly this John O’shea sort of player who can slot in at a multitude of positions.”

I also agree that if we can seal the Inler deal, I can absorb this Silvestre thing better.

I just hope it’s a stop-gap measure and that he’ll be with us for 1 year only. If he’s just a squad player, ok. I can’t stand the guy, I’ll never forgive his headbutting Freddie. To me, he’ll never be Arsenal. Still shocked, tho.

  61. Nymarcus,

Its a good point about headbutting Freddie. He could do a job for us but I doubt that he will be accepted totally due to his history.

Gallas played for Chelsea, Sol for Sperz so its not the first time we’ve signed players from big rivals.

  62. I am still wrestling with my conscience following a comment from a previous blogger. One is either an AKB or not. How can one go to a game having committed the cardinal sin of criticising AW. Perhaps we should cleanse our souls and nail our colours to the mast for good and declare either way before we have any legitimate interests on this board.

  63. MARCUS THIS MUST NOT BE WENGERSPIN BUDGET BALANCING ACT

He did all the spin that we will get a new player before the Twente game then he said he had to balance the budget, That doesnt mean a 750K squad signing

All of us so called traitors here remember the board promised funds to compete with the best once the stadium was completed.

  64. Alex IC, concede your point re Gallas and Sol.

Sol, you’re not a traitor and *sigh* yes, yes, fine, whatever you say. Must be exhausting keeping count of every single one of AW’s public comments as well as the Board’s.

  65. Look how many defensive midfielders we can call upon: Song, Den, Diaby, Eboue, Djourou, Ramsey, Coquelin, Bishoff, maybe even Toure.

None of them are brilliant but thats 9 players. You can see where the wenger comment about keeping finding midfielders is coming from.

In reality Song, Djourou and Toure are centre backs. Diaby is more attacking and whats more is always injured. Eboue is a right back/winger. Coquelin and Bishoff you can hardly count due to age/injury situation. that leaves the youngster Ramsey who wenger would not even trust at home to West Brom and of course Denilson. Den is the only OK option to partner Cesc over the long term in my opinion. Most of the above can do for 1 or 2 games but you wouldn’t want 40odd games from any of them per season.

Most fans are still baying for a new DM and I dont think we can win the PL with the options we currently have.

  66. sol,

We now know that what we were told was rubbish but to be fair the board could not have said that we would struggle to buy players once the stadium was completed.

Maybe they just got the calculations wrong, maybe they have incurred additional costs, maybe they are just tight basstaads, maybe they are just liars. We don’t know for certain, but I am not overly happy with the situation either. To be told one thing and then to be scraping around trying to buy cheapies and pay them minimum wage while the ticket and tv revenue are at record levels makes me feel uneasy.

If this is another balancing exercise, many will be unhappy.

  67. We need players and I would be grateful for any signing – Silvestre included.

This is a sign of low expectations in the transfer market but we are paper thin at the back especially at fullback so Silvestre should help here.

He’s cheap, he’s French and has experience, he can play in different positions, he’s had injuries. He sounds like a typical Arsenal player (except experience)

Still need that monster in the middle though.

  68. ** WHATEVER **

  69. Alex IC, not disagreeing with your post at all, but imagine the following scenario:

The Board is honest and tells the Gooner faithful that building the new stadium will be a hugely risky proposition that will severely restrict the manager’s options in the transfer market, that could even risk the club’s ranking in the top 4. They tell the fans it will be a massive investment that will make us unable to compete for some years against MU or Chelsea and keep us trophyless for a long time?

How would the fans have reacted? More importantly for the club’s finances, how would investors, shareholders and the banks have reacted?

I understand the argument that it would’ve been better for them to be honest and straightforward right from the start — but who risks putting forth a negative spin publicly on a massive investment project for the future of any company or organization?

  70. Nymarcus,

I made the same point in my post – that the board couldn’t just say that we wouldn’t be able to be compete due to the burden of the new stadium.

It just makes many people feel disappointed is the point I was making which is made worse by the departure of so many legends.

Apparently Vela is injured now! What the f*** is going on with our players? Do they somehow get infected with some disease that makes them brittle when the put on an Arsenal shirt?

At this rate even if we had 100 players it wouldn’t be enough!

  71. MARCUS. Whats done is done, I just am frustrated with a lack of news with 6 days to go before we get this alleged new player. Wengerspin is the problem it would be better if he said nothing the same applies to our verbose renta quote players.

  72. ALEX I think we need to buy 6 orthopedic surgeons 12 alternative therapy consultants and a hospital instead of a DM

  73. Why are the comments today so certain about the transfer? Yesterday’s comments were attacking the press for publishing lies and speculation, yet now everyone seems to believe the Silvestre story as soon as it is published? Although I am sceptical about this, I concede that it could happen. I just can’t understand everyone going on like it’s already happened! For me, this story is the same as all the other speculation until something is officially confirmed.

  74. I suppose those of us Expats who pay 200 pounds for a good ticket whenever we come to the Emirates, get pissed off when we hear about budgets

  75. We are going for the Guiness book of records of a complete 11 being injured, so far Vela, Nasri, Senderos, Coquelin, Diably, Rosicky, EDS; Bischoff, only need 3 more injured whilst playing in meaningless friendlies

  76. GAZZAP. Why couldnt Song play 40 games, hes young and strong?

  77. 4 separate thoughts:

    1. PoD – Good point, but the rumour is just so out of leftfield – so Wengeresque that more people have bought into it. I want someone to tell me it ain’t so.

    2. Anyone else agree that the summer hit a new low when Piers Morgan dipped his oar in this week – and people actually gave a toss what he had to say. I mean, don’t you hate it when you find out that someone you don’t like is a gooner.

    3. Gazzap – I just read the comment and agree re a DM for 40 games a season. Wenger usually picks a first team and sticks with it – unless an injury gives a fringe player a chance. I don’t think he believes any of our current DM options can fill that role for a whole season.

    4. NY, AlexIC – I thought the happy days were supposed to come after the money for the Highbury Square flats came through. Wasn’t that all part of the big plan? I know people were worried about them because of the credit crunch, but a recent article in the Telegraph suggested everything was still looking rosey for that development. Don’t hold me to that because I know f-all about real estate and business!

  78. sol, I agree that AW should just keep quiet, he often talks too much.

Vela’s injured? I feel like going into hibernation until September 2nd.

  79. Alex Ice Cream/NYmarcus..

I will reserve my judgement on the board. They have Till now, done a brilliant job and I still back them. We are the BEST run club in the business, period. If it does come out later that they have done something out of order then I will go against them. Not now, because I dont know enough.

My stand is this: if arsene or the board says we dont have money, I can live with that. But what I am COMPLETELY AGAINST is wasting EVEN A SINGLE PENNY on washed up crap like silvestre or lame ducks like senderos. If we dont buy quality, then BUY NOTHING.

AND ALEX, re rival players coming to us: sol came to us in his prime and as one of the best defenders in england and I am still not convinced about gallas, I am still of the opinion that we should have taken 20 MILLION+ pounds from chelsea for cashley.

anyway cheers to both of you..

  80. Everyone can listen to AW’s comments and draw different conclusions. The point is, situations change. He might state for example that he is looking for an experienced dm, then later be surprised at how well Eboue did in the position, so then switch his attention to defensive cover.
We might not agree with him, but he usually has a logical reason.
Also, the board have said they have money, AW has said he has money but he has also said he doesn’t want to bring in players who will block the development of the youngsters and he has faith in the squad. Maybe that would explain bringing in a player with only a couple of playing years left.

  81. Appiah available? Is he healthy? Personally I’d take a chance on him if we could get him for cheap. Silvestre eh? @750k would be a good deal if healthy. Cover for Clichy & backline? Not too shabby….But WHY???? Thought AW had faith in the Swiss kids?

  82. Read the accounts. We have the money. If we don’t, then moving was a mistake. The move was sold to the fans on the basis that we needed to make it to remain competitive revenue-wise but it was also pointed out by Fiszman and Hill Wood that it was pointless moving if we didn’t have a team good enough to keep us competitive. A lot of you are reverse engineering the situation to make a version of your truth fit the apparent facts. Football now is about money. Money from TV, sponsors, supporters and sugar daddies. That money goes straight into the players pockets and into buying new players to get teams further up the league to get more money to put in the players pockets and buy new players. Nobody can compete with Chelsea financially and Man Utd have practically bankrupted themselves to keep up there. Fergie doesn’t give a shit. He’ll be gone soon and his legacy will be intact. We don’t want to go that way do we? But do we need outside investment? My feeling is that even if Arsene had it he would not spend too much of it as he is conducting an experiment. The big questions will arise when he leaves.

  83. I don’t think Wenger has ever stated that he won’t be competitive. It seems he sets the same goals every year (PL, CL titles) and last year was agonizingly close to attaining them.

Maybe it’s because I’m in the US and am used to seeing players in other sports change allegiances quickly, but I don’t see Silvestre’s move as some unpardonable sin. There is also no shame in being third choice behind Vidic and Ferdinand. Whether it’s Silvestre or another veteran, a utility man would be great at the back.

I can’t understand some of the commenters being offended by taking others trash. Hasn’t Arsene proven that he will turn it into treasure? I mean it is possible that Silvestre could make Man U look silly if they let him go (they’re not real deep beyond Vidic and Rio).

PS. Thuram had to retire due to a heart irregularity.

  84. The levels of doom in here are unbelievable when nothing has been confirmed. At the end of the day, whatever you may think or feel about it, Arsene will make the decision he thinks is best for the team. There is an awful lot of second guessing and assertions of fact when none of you really know what is going on at the club. Once you’ve said your piece, what exactly is the point of going on and on about it? It changes nothing.

  85. As others have said, if Silvestre is signing as cover for CB and LB, Im ok with it but Senderos aside, I thought Wenger stated that Djourou and Song were ready. I don’t care how Senderos feels, but how about those two? Shows also that Wenger doubts Traores defensive abilities

If, however, Silvestre is signing to allow Wenger not buy a DM put augment what he has in that area by classing Song and Djourou as DMs, then I think it is a poor decision

  86. sol,

I think that we should build a hospital instead of buying any other players and employ a fleet of doctors, surgeons, nurses and consultants. We can keep players in overnight and have them watched so that they don’t get injured by activities such as eating too quickly.

  87. Well Alex IC, silverstre can be one of the new patients as the BBC have just confirmed the signing:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/7573520.stm

Just hope the D&G merchants don’t lose hope just yet.

  88. OMG,

    it’s confirmed on skysports news:
    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11670_4020298,00.html

I don’t know what to make of it….

  89. Now that’s a weird signing and for two years for a 31 years old? Not typical Arsene, but I guess people are saying we need experience, and the guy has tons of it.

I’m not a big fan of Silvestre, but I guess he will do for a couple of years…can he play anywhere else beside left back? At least he can give Clichy a breather every once in a while so he doesn’t get run to the ground.

  90. Gunner4Ever,

he can play in LB and CB. If I turn a blind eye about the fact that he once was a manscum, it makes a lot of sense. Decent back-up in both positions, no need to adapt to EPL, and costs peanuts. But still I’m in shock. It just happened out of blue and so lightening quick.

  91. It is on the arsenal.com.

  92. Well that Sky Sports photo would indicate we’ve just signed the love child of John Malkovich and a grouper fish.

  93. OMIGOD! Speechless!

  94. Fergie tried to sign Ramsey. Look at how that turned out.

Fergie joked about signing Henry. Look how that turned out.

Manchester United apparently have “strength in depth”. Well, we’ve just nabbed one of theirs on the cheap, and they haven’t even brought anyone in so far this whole summer.

Yeah, i’m not exactly jumping up and down with joy at the prospect of Silvestre joining, it’s not exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread. But if the fee was really 750k, then that’s small change, and it’s a good tactical move by Wenger nonetheless. For everyone moaning, just look at this way: Imagine it’s March and we’re battling it out at the top of the table with Chelsea/Man U. We’ve got a pivotal game coming up and the pressure couldn’t possibly be any higher. We have several players injured and the defense is looking slightly shaky. In this situation, you can either have Senderos or Silvestre at CB. Who do you choose?

    Yeah.

  95. Alex IC, good idea — except they’d have to be watched 24/7 by a HAL-like computer to make sure they don’t trip when they get up to go to the toilet.

  96. yeah i’ll second that new yorker!!

  97. @Blackstock – impecabble logic.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the loss of Hoyte. Surely we needed another defender anyway.

  98. sorry – impeccable !

  99. well i think it is a good signing! we need all the experience we can get! it is very weird though having a manc join us! lets just leave it at the one though!!!

  100. I’m not really moaning, I’m just reeling from this sudden transfer of a 31 YR OLD MU PLAYER!!! It’s like I’ve fallen into Bizarro world.

  101. As people have been saying all day:

*If* Silvestre’s coming in to add depth and experience to a thin group of defenders, then good. I’d rather him at left-back than Traore and he can bring a winning mentality to a squad that sometimes lacks confidence.

But *if* this is it for the summer and Silvestre’s arrival is supposed to indirectly solve our DM issues then…woops.

  102. Obviously he can add depth AND free-up Song or Toure to play at DM but you know what I mean.

  103. Always thought he was decent player. This is good, I think.

    I’m done.

  104. Paul N,

    I’m done too. Next!

  108. Can anyone explain how we can sign Silvestre on a 2 year deal but could not give Pires a 2 year deal at about the same age.

  109. Thanks ScotGooner, this signing is good and remember we bought tons of experience for practically nothing. I still think this is not the end of our signings…we still need one more in DM, maybe? Hopefully?

  110. Wenger gets criticised for buying “too many kids” and now he goes for experience, he’s still geting it!

I’m with Regular Al on this one. We still need another player but its a signing and one more paid up member of the Highbury Hospital.

  111. Steve,

Letting Pires go was one of Wenger’s worst mistakes as manager of Arsenal. Pires was a little older but its a very valid point.

I don’t even want to think about it…

  112. One more thing.

This is actually a brillinat buy, as our problems last year was a lack of concentration in the defense due to youth. Wouldnt Silvestre be a great/experienced (PL/International)/Championship winning player to bring to secure the lead at the end of games? or even when it will be a more physical opponent?
Good buy to me, especially if it was for as little as many are saying.
He will also be able to mentor the yougsters.

    Very good!

    God Bless!!!

  113. I think Wenger thought we would be ok in the scoring department (reason for letting pires go)but due to our defensive frailties last season, saw Silvestre as a need. Pires should have stayed still.

  114. ALEX the main injury problem has been diagnosed its verbal diarreah

  115. steve, Pires was offered a one year contract when less than 6 months short of his 33rd birthday. That would be roughly the same age , all but a couple of months, as Silvestre will be when his contract ends. Also the physical demands of playing in defense aren’t as great as playing in wide midfield.

  116. ALEX AL MARCUS AND FELLOW TRAITORS We must have a real Midfielder as well as le nouveau francais Sylvestre couldnt be the player Wengerspin was mentioning as up till yesterday he was signing for MANCITY or Sunderland

  117. The signing proves that AW doesn`t think Traore is ready to deputize at LB.

Either Fergie thinks Silvestre is past it or we are no threat this year – he has Brown & Evans (Solicitors ?) as his back up CBs so it makes sense to let him go in some respects.

    What`s up with Vela ?

  118. Silvestre cost one quarter of one home game gate receipts, now Wengerspin needs to spend 3 weeks gate receipts and sell Phil and make one great signing before the Twente game

  119. Traore is being groomed as winger, Vela has thigh injury

  120. sol,

You don’t let up do you!

I hear that the cure is to be found in the transfer market. Failing that they can check in AW to his own room in the Rosicky Ward and he can keep Tom company.

  121. ALEX You and I and the fellow traitors can see a funny side to our quest for PL title. Others get too serious

  122. sol, believe it or not, you did put a smile on my face. :-)

Vela’s been with Mexico on int’l duty and got injured in training. This is of course to be expected of an Arsenal player. It’s their obligation to get injured.

Clichy did not play in the friendly against Sweden but Sagna and Gallas did. Sagna provided a great assist for a fantastic Benzema goal. Enuf with these friendlies!

Anyway, what the hell, welcome Mikael — just stay healthy and go out and get stuck in against the PL’s bully boys!

  123. I hope ole gunner is ok!

  124. sol,

Why not have a laugh about it? I thought that the discussion about Dmitry and Michael Phelps was f***ing funny!

  125. Alex, I loved all that desert camel stuff you and sol came up with…

  126. NOW TO BE SERIOUS. Javi Alonso had a great game for Spain tonight so now we have some cover for CL games if we could get Alonso for four weeks gate receipts it would be a good deal

  127. Don’t forget every good hospital has a research laboratory so remember to build a room for the mad professor so he can have a private place to mumble to himself as he mixes his winning potion……. “eye of newt…fresh facial hair of a sixteen year old…… some scum of manc….ha..ha…ha [in Christopher Lee voice]

  128. Letting Pires go might have been a mistake. Before returning to form last year he did tear up his knee right after leaving Arsenal.

The main difference between Pires and Silvestre as I see it is that players have a harder time taking a lesser role with their existing team than they do moving on to another team. If feathers were ruffled for one reason or another it is simply easier to get a new start somewhere else where the older players’ expectations of being top of the pile are not the same. Players like Bergkamp and Giggs seem to age gracefully, but for Henry it would have been very difficult to start playing in reserves while at Arsenal. At Barca he really was no longer the ‘big man’ and so had no choice.

  129. god! just watched the highlights of the england game!! i think even wenger wouldnt be able to save these sorry souls from football mediocroty who cannot play football in any other way then a two dimensional predictable fashion!

we will always play the same it is in our blood, so why make us look like fools with a foriegn manager.

  130. Poor Howard must be drinking himself into oblivion right now :)

  131. Guys just come back from the england game and after thinkingf that was the biggest waste of £60 I found that we have signed fooking Silvestre not the fooking player i was looking for i know we need experience but the dude for one played for the manure, for two he is a reject and for the three he is past it and totally injury prone soon enough we will have a squad of totally injury prone players. Sorry about the rant i think it is precipitated from the poo game i just saw……

I hope Silvestre can stay fit.

  132. All of the discussion this evening about how Arsene was wrong to let Pires go has overlooked the very important fact that Pires himself wanted to go as he had fallen out with Arsene bigtime.

Pires might have been persuaded at some point to stay on at Arsenal and accept a series of rolling one year contracts, in Dennis Bergkamp style.

But once he was taken off early on in the Champions League final, he was so upset with Arsene that there was no subsequent chance of persuading him to stay on at Arsenal.

And I suspect that would have been the case even if Arsene had done an about turn and offered Pires a 2 year contract, which is what he originally wanted.

It took Pires at least a season or so after leaving Arsenal to come to terms with his early substitution in the Champions League final, and, as much as I’d have liked Pires to have remained at Arsenal for longer than he did, I think it’s unfair and a misreading of the situation to blame Arsene for Pires decision to quit the club.

  133. G4E

I’m still around. I don’t know why everybody is complaining about MS being brought in. He’s 31 yes but has tons of experience winning champioships and playing in the CL. I’ve always dreaded the day Clichy will be off for about 4 weeks. Traore is not good enough at LB and he’s an overhyped lad outside the pitch.

It’s a great signing by Arsene at 1 million quid. He’ll come in to support CB and LB. One of the defenders has to go and it should be Senderos who after several chances and mistakes will find himself out of favour. Djourou should now play ahead of Senderos.

  134. Silver Gunner:
You now know more than Arsene?

  135. Howard

We agree, rare but it happens

    Up The Arse!!!

  136. Hey Howard, glad to see you around….you’ve just been “Englishly quiet” lately that’s all :)

  137. Hasn’t arsene signed silvestre already??
