Rosicky Has His Say, Captain’s Words and Arsene

I guess training will be interesting when everyone returns from their various sojourns into the international foray. No doubt Gael Clichy will be seeking out Tomas Rosicky for a tad of an explanation of his interview in this morning’s The Sun,

There were an awful lot of other similarly negative things happening. Everything began with Eduardo’s injury. Then came Gael’s error and that thing with William. You could say that was probably where the ground started to crumble beneath our feet

Rosicky did point out in Clichy’s defence,

The lads were winning 2-1 but then in the last minute Gael gave away a really stupid penalty. At the same time, he played brilliantly all season. He improved immensely and turned into a great defender as a result. But he messed up that day. I don’t think something similar would happen to him now, because he’s a lot more experienced

Rosicky does support Gallas’ appointment as Captain and launches a stout defence of the Frenchman, despite what the headline would have you believe,

It was William’s first season as captain and it’s not easy to wear the armband in a team like this. I think he will have learned. There were things he could have done better — but he knows that better than anyone else. He’s really immersed in everything and that was something he just got immersed in too deeply. But otherwise he’s a good leader in my opinion and he will continue to be captain even though there was speculation about that

There is a fine line between passion and emotion, one that Gallas struggled to bridge that day, hardly surprising in some respects given what had passed but on the other hand, that is a balance that he has to find. It should be remembered as well that he had done so very well prior to St. Andrew’s and no-one batted an eyelid about his leadership once the initial surprise had settled down. It is, of course, up to Gallas to get on with the job, so to speak, and prove everyone wrong. As important though is managing the team once a ‘lead’, such as the one at Liverpool with Adebayor’s equaliser, has been established. To me, that is perhaps more important; the exuberence of the team needs to be tempered with the ‘professionalism’ that would have seen Babbel brought down in the early stages of his run.

Gallas though is more than happy to remain captain. Whether he would if one of his predecessor’s has his dreams come true is another matter but more of that later. Emmanuel Adebayor’s reward for signing a new contract is to get the strength of Rosicky’s tongue about the fiasco he engineered with Bendtner at Birmingham. Overall, Rosicky is not saying anything that we have not already done so ourselves and there is truth in the words of the Czech international. He, perhaps deliberately, does not address another key issue; injuries. Given that he is an expert in this particular field at Arsenal, it is (hardly) surprising that he has not has his say on the matter. There will be some criticism of him for breaking ranks but in this media age, it is hardly surprising. However, I would say he is entitled to his opinion, especially as a large portion of the squad has already been vocal on this subject.

Tony Adams has indicated that he would like to manage the club one day. It will not be soon; his spell at Wycombe was a sharp learning curve, he admitted that he found it a struggle to deal with players less technically capable than he was used to. He was not contacted in the summer despite being at the end of his Portsmouth contract. I would have thought that the only role currently at Arsenal he could fill would be as defensive coach. Maybe he will be ‘The Gaffer’ in the future but as he admits, there is little indication that the current incumbent has any plans to move on.

On which note, Arsene has ‘defended’ his youth policy,

We are a young side and some more promising youngsters have come through for this season, but they have all got the quality which you need to have if you play for Arsenal. If you play at this club you must be ready to play at the very highest level

A number will not though as Barazite joining Derby, Nordtveit to Salamanca and Gibbs maybe to Reading, all on season long loan deals. It seems to me that Arsene’s policy on loans is shifting somewhat. In the past, it has been a sign that the player might be heading for the exit but in recent years, Bendtner, Randall, Gibbs, Merida and Gilbert have all been on loans for reasons other than passport control and still had their services retained by Arsenal. With the move to bringing younger players through, this is now going to be a more crucial phase for them to be ready for first team action.

Finally, Don Howe has lamented the quirk of genetics that made Cesc Fabregas a Spaniard, not English. Now, Don might be biased through association but it is a fair summary of the state of the English midfield.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. first it was walcot who described song as a fool.now rosicky slagging clichy . moral is going down . i dont think these types of comments will help the team. imo clichy is in the level of cesc , simply untouchable. should be respected by the fans club and the players

  2. It wasn’t Clichy’s fault that the referee gave a non-existent penalty and didn’t give the clear-cut one on Adebayor.

  3. that penalty at birmingham wasn’t clichy’s error, it was the referee’s. i would have thought rosicky would have pointed that out.

  4. Morale isn’t going down. Walcott’s remarks about Song were on a jokey segment on Soccer A.M. and can’t be taken seriously.

And we all know what an interview in the Sun entails – loaded questions and selective quotation of the responses. Even with those two principles applied, Rosicky still comes off as quite complimentary.

When it comes to Birmingham – why does nobody ever emphasise the effect of Eduardo’s horrific injury on the rest of the game? Gallas and Clichy made poor decisions – and the referee made worse ones – after everybody saw Eduardo writhing in agony on the pitch, with an open dislocation of left foot.

Why is the force of such an event never acknowledged in the press?

  5. I am not even certain Rosicky actually said those words. Was it an exclusive interview by the Sun? Or was it originated from a Czech media for which the Sun has taken it out of context?

  6. Ole Gunner,

Spot on. I thought that these comments were a bit odd and why bring them up now – 6 months later? Gael did make a mistake but it was not a penalty.

It wasn’t Rosicky’s fault but his injuries did not help us either. Clichy did more to help us win than Tom who played only a handful of games and who usually scored when the game was already over.

If I were Tom I would concentrate on getting fit and actually playing some games rather than slagging off your teammates. Tom must get a decent wage and its high time he started earning it.

At the end of the season he will only have 1 year left on his contract and I wouldn’t offer him a a new one unless he proves his fitness.

  7. i think it will be the latter.. i hardly believe the sun ne way…

  8. Actually Nordtveit’s loan is only until January and can be extended.

Rosicky is getting fat, did anybody see his jowls wobble as he laughed at an Eduardo joke in the stands?

  9. I am a big fan of Rosicky but I would be more interested in getting himself fit & earning his big pay cheque rather than passing comments about his team mates.

  10. I think we should allow this issue die down, Rosicky must have made a mistake but I am sure he has his reasons and he is sure not a fool to know the weight his words carries. This type of thing have the capacity to disrupt the team but i hope not

gunner fans are invited to join http://soccerfansbase.com today

  11. It was Clichy”s lack of concentration that gave the referee the oportunity to give the penalty,The biggest mistake at Birmingham was when we were 2-1 up and in total control Wenger took off Helb and Theo and brought on Gilberto and Denilson.

  12. Name me a player who has recently benefitted from a loan spell in the Championship. Bendtner went down hill, as did Djourou, at Birmingham. Lupoli after scoring a few goals, sat on the bench for virtually the entire season at Derby; Mark Randall and Gibbs didn’t feature at all for Norwich and wherever it was after Christmas last year. At which point Wenger said he’d reconsider the loan-spell idea, at least as far as English clubs went. So now he’s sending Barazite to Derby for the season. Since he’s a rather similiar player to Lupoli – clever and quick but not very large – one wonders how much experience he’ll get, or indeed whether he’ll come back in one piece. Why Derby anyway? Dreary place, lousy football: you’d think Barazite would be happier and get more games in Holland or Spain?

  13. THIS nonsense of players giving interviews every week is disastrous,

Rosicky should talk to nobody till hes played 4 games on the trot, if he was paid on the number of games started he would owe us money.

As for Birmingam if EGO hadnt been greedy and not passed to Bendtner we would have won the game

  14. MIA Bentdner did improve whilst at Brom and Vela did at Ossasuna

  15. i am amazed we all have the energy to discuss these issues, which means that the Sun has archieved its aim and we are not really intelligent to decipher articles.
i have finally come to the conclusion that arsenal fans we never defend what is ours but jump on the bandwagon and heap abuse.
we are fans which means we are supporters by definition and we should back are manager’s decisions and his players in acheiving what we so desire which is a trophy. END OFF

  16. Lupoli got 20 starts at Derby as well – that’s as much as any teenager on loan could hope for. Barazite seems to be a more versatile player than Lupoli ever was. I think he’ll see most of his football on the wing, and that’s easily the best place for him in the Championship. He can acclimatize to the fast pace and the physicality, but will be kept the hell away from the knuckle dragging centre backs and midfield hardmen.

  17. Bendtner did not go down hill and nor did Djourou, they both had successful loans. You are getting confused with the fact that when they came back to Arsenal they weren’t top players instantly. JD was INJURED, while Nik B has huge competition for a place in the side. Being in and out of the side its impossible to get any form going.
Lupoli did well as well but I dont think arsene wanted that type of striker at the time. he wanted a big powerful man so nik B was kept and Lupoli let go.
I think Randall picked up an injury at Burnley and then could not get into the team – fair enough if he’s not as good as what they have got. from what I have seen of Randall its not the loan that messed him up, just the fact that he is a fairly average player. Not sure what happened to Gibbs.
Basically a loan deal for Barazite is exactly what he needs. he needs to play every single week in a competitive league.

I wonder if this rosicky comment is from a while ago? If he is getting fat then that needs addressing. we dont need a paul gascoigne sitting on the bench.

  18. @ Mia were u watching the same football we all were??? Randall and Gibbs its easy to pick on them but they were there for the experience of getting prepared for a match every 3 days rather than playing useless reserves…

  19. STOP PRESS. NASRI is injured again and has withdrawn from French side. I hope its minor

  20. GAZZAP Randall is way down the pecking order. He will be sold next year I think

  21. AW gets on well with Paul Jewell which may explain `why Derby`.

Lets face it Barazite would only be playing reserve / Carling Cup for us this season. Personally, I think he`ll do well.

I was more surprised with Nordveidt`s loan to Spain as I would think as a centre back it would be more beneficial to play in the Championship where he would learn more of the physical side of the game.

  22. What a load of cobblers, I dont believe a word of it about what Tomas supposed to have said. Anyone with half a brain knew it was the refs error for giving a penalty

  23. As an employee of Arsenal football club and member of the first team squad – not to mention experienced international & captain of the Czech Republic – Tomas Rosicky is perfectly entitled to express his views about all things Arsenal, even if fans & bloggers disagree with their contents, and even if his views have been distorted to some degree by the media.

As Yogi has already pointed out, Rosicky’s reported views are (very) consistent with those already aired and thoroughly discussed by bloggers on this and many other Arsenal forums.

Indeed, such is the sentiment of what he reportedly said that I wondered if Rosicky had spent part of his time out injured perusing various Arsenal fan blogs, for what he has supposedly said could have been copied & pasted straight out of several of them, including this one.

In my view Tony Adams still has it all to do before he could legitimately start to dream about returning to Arsenal as the manager or head coach.

When the day comes to eventually replace Arsene, the fact that Adams was a popular, legendary player at the club won’t count at all when the Board meet to consider the qualities of the potential candidates.

If the names of any English/British candidates were to appear on that managerial shortlist to replace Arsene – along, no doubt, with those from candidates abroad – I wouldn’t be unduly surprised if Gareth Southgate’s was amongst them. Not that I’m advocating on his behalf, just an observation.

  24. Peter,
I totally agree with you on that one. The substitution changed the game in favour of Birmingham. It was a matter of time before they score against us.
Yes, Clichy was guilty in giving the ref opportunity; but it wasn’t a penalty, and I could blame Adebayor as well with the same regard, as he missed simple taping in opportunities before the penalty.
Also, anyone remembers the 2-2 draw against Spurs 2006/07 when we were leading 2-1 with 3 minutes in extra-time; then AW decided to make a stupid substitution, which allowed the ref to add an extra minute, then Spurs equalized.
    I really went crazy!

  25. Good to see a few guys go out on loan although I’m not convinced of the merit of sending football players to the likes of Derby and Reading where they’ll watch the ball sailing over their head and be drilled about the importance of “passion”, “heart” and “commitment” as opposed to inconsequential characteristics like skill, passing ability and composure. The last time I can remember one of these these loans really working out was when Cashley Hole went to Palace. Quite a while ago now….

  26. Peter Storey, IC,

I am with you on that stupid, stupid substitutions v Brum. Once Berto and Denilson came on we didn’t have the ball and Brum looked dangerous for the first time in the game.

What was the point of the substitutions, especially so late in the game. Its not as if Hleb and Theo were going to be given any rest by the 5 mins or so they were off the pitch.

The ref -Mike Dean- should be investigated for match-fixing. He was that bad.

  27. LC,

Agreed. We have a real tendency to just try to hold on when leading in the last 5 mins or so of a game & I put that down to AW who has a tendency to make things more difficult with defensive substitutions which hand the inititiave to the opposition.

It`s cost us several times & it will probably happen again in the future.

We dominate possession & territory for 85 minutes then suddenly everything changes.

  28. Blimey Yogi! I don’t know how you did it but you have stimulated a whole load of stupid comments on here!

I agree with you gazzap but Lupoli left Arsenal because he wanted to go back home to Italy. He told the Arsenal staff that he would leave at the end of his contract long before it happened, so it was no surprise. I don’t think Wenger wanted him to go but he had no choice.

  29. Let’s be clear about Rosicky. He got a freak injury due to a kick on a tendon, which separated it from the bone, and that didn’t show up on any of the scans. So, several times he returned to playing and the injury flared up again and it was only when he had it opened up that the medics found what the problem was. It should be resolved now and, as it was caused by a kick, it is not a weakness that is likely to keep showing up.

So, why do supporters get on his back about being out for a long time? It was hardly his fault and it shouldn’t be an on-going problem. Suggesting we get rid of him is stupid! Maybe Man Utd should get rid of Ronaldo, as he is out for a while with an injury!

  30. You are all chatting shit… especially Paulie Walnuts.. if you was manager of Arsenal football club 2-1 up with 10mins to go, u need a win to ensure you maintain the lead at the top of the premiership… are you seriously telling me you wouldnt try and bring on players like Gilberto to just sure things up?? it didnt work, but on many many other occasions it has, so keep your mouth shut and keep playing Champ Manager.

The way some of you fans think you know better, and blame decision making on Wenger’s part is unbelievable, when you are down on the touchline and you are under pressure constantly to keep things running smoothly on the pitch you have to make decisions all the time. Let the manager do the managing please.

On the Rosicky comments… he doesnt say anything bad against Clichy, just pointed the obvious a lack of concentration.. BIG DEAL!?

  31. aj,

Not sure if you are referring to me regarding getting rid of Tom, but I said that unless he proves his fitness he shouldn’t get a new contract. If the knee operation didn’t cure him and he keeps getting injured what are we to do with him?

He also had numerous hamstring injuries the season before.

Let’s hope the op did the job.

  32. that birmingham game was a matchus horribilus. just about everything weng wrong and just about everyone could accept some of the blame for us not winning that day. if ever there was a day when the Gods were against us, it was then. sometimes its just not your day and clearly that one was not.
After that game I just prayed that we could bounce back and react quickly in the next games. we couldn’t. something that day broke the flow of the club, which probably never returned for the rest of the season. we did not win 2 games in a row again until late April – that was 11 games without winning 2 in a row.

This Nasri injury is what he had last week, and it clearly had not healed when he played West Brom. It looks like he will miss the Fulham game now. I guess that means Ramsey will come back in and Eboue will go left wing. The alternative is to use Toure somewhere in midfield.

  33. “But otherwise he’s a good leader in my opinion and he will continue to be captain even though there was speculation about that”.

Don’t you guys think the interview, if there was one, was rehashed from a while ago?
Gallas is a captain, AT PRESENT and he is saying “will” continue.

Please don’t try to stir things up with nothing. Isn’t it time to make a clean start?

  34. Chris Gonna

Birmingham were down to 10 men we were in total control we were attacking them and creating chances ie the EGO/ Bendtner chance they were hardly in our half.As soon as he took two attackers off and brought 2 defensive players on Birmingham started to take control. We all know this Arsenal team is better attacking than defending

  35. i doubt rosciky said that stuff,or even had that interview. everyone knows whatthe sun is like for tellin lies

  36. I said it yesterday, and I’m saying it again: Somebody has got to put a gag on our players. The press has been predicting the fall of arsenal, and they will ensure that it happens, even if they have to twist the spoken words of our players to cause disaffection.
Wenger has got to put a stop to player interviews…..for now.

  37. Chris Goona,

Don`t be ridiculous -I`m not claiming to know more than AW & sure there`s pressure but I`m entitled to an opinion as much as you are. Isn`t that what this site is all about ?

I wouldn`t swap our manager for anyone but he makes mistakes just like everyone else.

  38. Peter Storeys Budgie

I uderstand that we are better attacking, but what would you say if they score and Wenger didnt take the strikers off?? you would have started moaning about how Denilson & Gilberto was on the bench (naturally defensive minded players) and Wenger didnt use them!… it seems as if whatever decision our manager makes he cant win. If you have a problem with Wenger being manager you should go to Le Grove,.. protest with them and try and get George Graham back in, see what we win then.

  39. Even with the adverse slant that the Sun has put on the article, I see nothing to indicate that Tom has been disrespectful to the Club or the Players.
He has indeed clarified this on aresenal.com though I feel there was no need to.

Where did you hear about the Nasre injury Alex?

    that is worrying

  40. Paulie Walnuts

Every manager makes decisions, and yes some dont work. What i dont like is how every1 keeps bringing up the Birmingham game, it just wasnt our day, we could have ended that game 3-1 winners quite easily but it wasnt to be. Lets just move on and get behind the team.

Rosicky has just denied all the crap the media has stirred up once again.. check out ARSENAL.com for a real website that publishes facts and not fiction.

  41. Is NASRI injured…???? where can i find this????

  42. Does anybody actualy believe anything from the sun anymore after the hleb so called exclusive .
they’ve become the english marca , afiliating themselves to manure’s for redership purpose .
And trying to destabilise potential chalengers Cant remember reading manure’s lack of deph after their draw. Dont read it , dont buy it.

  43. If you go to the Arsenal.com site, you will see that Rosicky has issued a statement that suggests his comments were taken out of context.

  44. chris GOONA,

    http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hd-Y4EnB2JB3vWOkM20RJIfeM8og

  45. Doesnt state that Nasri has another injury, its just the same thing strain which he played with against West Brom i hope. So he hasnt gone for the friendly under instructions from Wenger that he should rest and recover properly from the previous injury i reckon.

Whoever said Eboue left mid…!!! no chance, that didnt work. Id rather have Eboue/Denilson partnership in the middle again and Vela on the left if Nasri is injured. Its at CB where Wenger will have major selection problems…. Djourou looked alrite in both games, will Toure be thrown back in front of him again?? remember what happened to Senderos

  46. Matt

I would not say that his comments were taken out of context. He is seeking to clarify the slant put on them by the headlines. I agree with dakota in that issuing the clarification merely serves to keep the story in the media.

    YW

  47. Chris Goona,

I agree we should get behind the team & B`ham should now be consigned to history.

Rosicky was asked the questions & gave honest answers but it`s gone & we should move on.

I`ll guess that Nasri will be OK for Fulham & that he may have played for France if it was a qualification game. I hope so anyway. if not Vela for left midfield ?

  48. Paulie Walnuts

Vela is my next preffered option for left mid, he is a naturally left sided player, left footed, played left mid for Osasuna quite well by all accounts… makes sense to me. Denilson with Ramsey is too lightweight, great decision to play Eboue in there, actually found a use for him!!

My 1st choice would be Nasri/Rosicky, Walcott is good to have on the pitch for his pace and dribbling ability. But he isnt a consistent performer like Rosicky, and i expect Nasri also with his ability to keep hold of the ball. We could well see Rosicky & Nasri deployed on the wings once he gets back if Walcott hasnt cemented his 1st team spot. Im hoping he does, because we saw last season what Theo can do to defences with his pace.

  49. I dont know why people bash bentner so much. I agree with gazzap, he came back a better player after the loan. He is the best header of the ball we have had at the club since tony and he will be a potent WEAPON in breaking down negative teams this season.

I am a big fan of his and the way he climbs in the air and times those devastationg headers so brilliantly is a JOY to watch and gives our team so much of what we lack. No one at the club is as good in the air as him, and that alone makes him a vital member of our team, though I agree his ball control skills does have scope for improvement…

  50. Anybody know if song will be playing against fulham?

  51. Naga… 100% with you

Bendtner is a great option for us, he deserved his start against West Brom ahead of Van Persie but he must be wishing he made more of it. Robin hasnt shown anything yet, but i think Wenger will ease him into the season a bit more this time round. Last season he was flying and look what happened to him!!

Adebayor offers alot more than Bendtner in terms of groundwork and hasseling defenders, making runs also, his dribbling is alot better i reckon too. You rarely see defenders catch up to Ade often unless he trips over his own feet. Think Ade thrives on goals game by game, which is a good thing but you can see the tension amongst fans becuase of this summers events.

Robin Van Persie on the other hand needs to show alot more, but i dont think we should push him to much on his performances, another injury will be really frustrating.

  52. Vela is in Mexico city to play for the WC qualifying against Honduras tomorrow (20/08). So I doubt he’ll play against Fulham.

  53. naga, ditto your comments re Bendtner! Probably the most underrated Arsenal player among gooners.

Yogi, where did you see Rosicky’s comments re Ade and Bendtner? They weren’t in that Sun article. I’d be interested in reading what he had to say.

His supposed comments in the Sun (if they’re real) aren’t all that bad but what I object to is that–like RVP–a player who spends more time injured than playing on the pitch shouldn’t be making any comments to the press that even hint at any type of criticism of teammates, the manager or the club—or quotes that could be twisted by the press in any way. A lot of our players just keep their mouths shut. Or when they do say something to the press, it’s not something that can be twisted to add to the media’s campaign of slating our club. Earlier in the summer RVP criticized our club’s wage structure. I don’t think RVP is the player to do that—given the fact that for 3 seasons straight Arsenal have paid him quite handsomely to spend most of his time recovering from injuries. I’m in total agreement with Alex IC re Rosicky and what needs to happen if he’s to be given a new contract.

Re Nasri’s supposed “injury” — followers of the France team (that includes me) are suspicious about this. There’s a rather huge soap opera that’s been going on between the France NT’s young players v. the veterans for a long time now (lots of petty stuff about Benzema’s and Nasri’s conduct with Henry and other vets) — and some personal feuding between some of the young players.

Nasri and Ribery, e.g., reportedly hate each other. Here’s the latest discussion thread on Nasri and Benzema for the Sweden friendly from an English-language France NT blog:

    http://france.worldcupblog.org/euro-2008/nasris-in-ben-arfas-out-for-france-sweden.html

And here’s some more info on the ongoing soap opera within the team, with some mention of Nasri:

    http://marseille.theoffside.com/french-ligue-1/pape-diouf-they-hate-each-other-its-hardly-news.html

Domenech may well have expelled both Ben Arfa and Nasri from the NT for reasons not at all related to injury. It wouldn’t be the first time. All summer long I’ve had one worry about any of the links we’ve had with any of the France’s big triumvirate of Bright Young Players (Benzema, Nasri, Ben Arfa): they’re all difficult, big-headed jerks to some degree.

  54. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2008/20080819_110747_nasri-forfait-pas-remplace_Dev.html

  55. Lo and behold it has come to light that Tommy didn’t say anything to any little shitstain from “the sun”.

He had an interview with a Czech paper, and “the sun” have liberally lifted parts and invented the rest from it.

I believe many people would call it what it is – Lies.

The fact that what they have “quoted” him as saying is now being pointed to as being “pretty much what everyone is saying”, should tell us all something.

What it SHOULD be telling us, is that many of us are being led around by our noses by the low-life scum who masquerade as “journalists”.

What we SHOULD be taking from all of this is that we should be forming our own opinions, not just sucking up the drivel poured out by these rabidly anti-Arsenal, fat, dishonest, sweaty slobs.

I think it should be written into the Gonner Manifesto that it is the God-given duty of any Gooner, when encountering any “journalist” anywhere, that he or she should take it upon themselves to drive their foot crotchwards with great and determined force, followed by a sharp, and preferrably lethal blow to the head of said “journalist” with anything suitable in the immediate vicinity.

  56. I`m a big Bendtner fan too. He`s superb in the air from set pieces especially.

His technique seems pretty good to me & he can shoot & be clinical too.

When he`s filled out properly in another year or two & starts to impose on defenders physically we`ll have a monster on our hands.

I`m not sure he & Ade can start together though as Ade is normally the `outball` & NB tends to drift out of the game. He still seems better as an impact sub.

  57. Once you start believing what you read in the sun you have a problem. How many times has it been shown that they are a bunch of lying half-wits who are always looking to shit stir whatever snippet they can? In my ever-so-humble opinion Bendtner will never be Arsenal quality as he has no touch and although he may well become a decent player this and his lack of vision of the game around him are not top class.
On a lighter note I see that John Terry, that marvelous human-being is captain of our national team. Apart from throwing bottles through the windows of night clubs, urinating on fellow revelers in night clubs, insulting tourists at airports, being hauled up before the FA on many occasions for loutish behavior, trying to break Fabregas’s leg before Eboue’s revenge (his finest hour?) and being a general scumbag and thug, I think this is a decision by Capello ( a man stuck in his ways) that we should all think about deeply.

  58. has anyone seen a list of Arsenal players that are selected for their countries this week? does anyone know if RVP is with Holland?

  59. I want to see song play in midfield for us when hecomes back from china.

I think toure can play there but he is better employed as a centerback alongside gallas, the same can be said of Djourou who has yet to be tried in midfield although i am sure i read an article earlier this year in which he stated that he woulf like to playin midfield.

  60. Djourou looks like hes the CB we were looking for Silver Gunner, but only over a run of games can we properly judge him. He deserves his chance, i just feel he might not get it as Toure is undroppable!!!.. this is why i see the logic in trying Toure as DM,.. but his stamini and quickness on the ball is questionnable… Eboue actually looks more suitable.

Where does this leave Kolo..?? In a way its a good problem to have players ready to step up. Djourou deserves his chance too.

  61. Yogi,

Agreed, me saying ‘out of context’ is perhaps slightly wrong.

What we do agree on is that The Sun are not the originators of the story, they are just taking what they want to try and cause some controversy.

Still nothing on the official site regarding Nasri’s injury – so hopefully he is OK for Saturday….

  62. If Eboue is not playing at RB his next best position appears to be DM. I still question whether he can do that job for us at the highest level. WBA at home first game of the season is not the highest level. A tough away game would be a better test. I would like to see Toure used in midfield as backup like a lot of fans. But again I question whether he can do the job in the long term, but I would say that Fulham away should be no problem for Kolo. I would like to keep JD in defence. I dont like to see high performing players dropped.

  63. gio

The three leading candidates for the England captaincy have all got varying degrees of ‘moral turpitude’:

    Ferdinand – drugs test
    Terry – lout
    Gerrard – gangster connections

Take your pick but be rest assured that the Daily Mail will no doubt be taking up the cudgels to fight the corner of Mary Whitehouse to lead the team…

    YW

  64. Gio, your comment of:

“Once you start believing what you read in the sun you have a problem.”

    It would be better as
“Once you start reading the sun you have a problem.

  65. Yogi you can’t hold the drug test thing against Rio as that was almost a decade ago and most will agree that he is the model professional. So he smoked some weed at a party when he was 18 how many of us have been in that boat?

But Terry, Ferdinand or Gerrard all captain material, a much of a muchness.

  66. Steve PSML at the sun comment!!

  67. Silver Gunner, Rio’s missed drug test was not that long ago. It was during his time with manure. Maybe 3 years or so.

  68. PS
    It was 2003

  69. Yeah steve you are right but nevertheless this should not be held against him.

like i said a much of a muchness when it come to the three candidates.

  70. SILVER..Song should play CM against Fulham, with Nasri injured thares a place for him

  71. NYMARCUS. Did you see Song play for Cameroon against your team?

  72. Gio, Terry didn’t try to break his leg: he slid into his chest as Fabs was prone on the ground if I remember correctly. As for the Rosicky article, the Sun’s entire lead up is totally misleading. Even a stupid guy like me (Steve is right, anyone who reads the Sun, and I did read the article) can see that the quotes are all innocuous — he notes the mistakes and how they accumulated while generally praising the players. Clichy’s penalty was stupid, even if it wasn’t really a penalty.

  73. i watched a song in one of the games and it looked like he was playing at CB, but i would liketo see him have a run of games in CM alongside Cesc.

  74. If anything I can see Djorou being a long term replacment for Gallas who is getting on a bit with Toure resuming CB duties and being a candidate for when Gallas leaves. You cannot unerestimate Toures powers of recovery, pace and determination at the back. So I think Djorou will be used to give Toure and Gallas a break, Eboue will be the utility player and frankly can put in a decent performance in either back, midfield or wing position. I believe Eboues runs are much more decisive than Theo’s over a whole game at the moment but his abilty to finish and think in the final third is what is lacking which Theo is more adpet at. Theo will need to work on being less easilly marginalised to the wings and cut into the middle where he looks more dangerous.

  75. “Ferdinand – drugs test
    Terry – lout
    Gerrard – gangster connections”

ho-hum, so what, they’re all good, gritty, passionate English boys

Gallas – cries and hits an advertising board
    Disgrace! Unfit for captain material!

Silver, Rio is also the guy who kicked a female steward at Stamford Bridge. That was only a few months ago.

sol, Song has been playing as a CB at the Olympics, not DM. Cameroon’s defense was fantastic — hell, they were the better team overall against a disorganized, uncreative Brazil. Altho basically all Cameroon did was put 10 men behind the ball–later 9, when one player was sent off. However, they were exhausted by the time extra time came around and Song couldn’t stop Marcelo from scoring. Song looked incredibly overwhelmed at that point and lost his footing, he couldn’t touch the ball. Unfortunately, he’ll come back exhausted. He dealt with Brazil’s attacks intelligently, always well timed. He’s got good instincts. He was absolutely key in keeping Cameroon in the game as long as they were (and in the tournament as long as they were). I especially liked his sense of anticipation.

Argentina just humiliated Brazil 3-0 early this morning. We’re out of the tournament, still no gold medal. It hurt like hell but it’s what we needed. Maybe now the CBF will wake the f–k up and fire a manager who saddles *BRAZIL* with THREE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS! (sorry, had to get that out)

  76. Terry’s tackle against an already PRONE Cesc was disgusting — yet all we heard about was how poor JT was put out of commission by Evil Eboue.

  77. I agree with Chris about JD. So far he’s done great and he deserves to partner Gallas in the Fulham game. He might be the big Cb we’ve always missed. Pace, height, comfortable with the ball and football intelligence; attributes that still lack in Senderos.

  78. ha ha,, gio,

    “Eboue’s revenge (his finest hour?)”

    thats a good one..lol

  79. HOWARD Song could play alongside them he was excellent at Olympics three games no goals conceded until extra time and they had only ten players he was attacking and defending, it would be great if he played against Fulham the game that all went wrong for him2 years ago and from which he made a massive comeback

  80. Steve / Silver at al

I don’t hold it against any of them hence the Mary Whitehouse comment. If misdemeanours were stacked against anyone, none would be able to hold any ‘high office’!

On form, you would say Ferdinand. For Bulldog spirit, Terry and Gerrard would get it simply for being the only midfielder able to do the job. Personally, I would tell Ferdinand he had the role, wait for him to smile and then tell him he’d been ‘merked’ and give it to someone else. Just for the same level of laughs he produced in his TV show…

    YW

  81. NYMARCUS I saw the game I thought he was great defending and a couple of times he went forward and was getting past players, hes definetly a future star and should play against Newcastle or sooner depending on how tired he is

  82. NYmarcus rio kicked a steward why????

JD looks like he could be the answer we have been searching for I would just love to see song in CM.

Unlike others I like Sendy for his no nonsense approach i like the way he wears his heart on his sleeve he adds grit that i feel that JD is still lacking, but it is JD’s compusure on the ball that is the killer he remindsme of Rio.

  83. YOGI What does Capello know about selection, he picked Theo ahead of Agobodno of Villa who is really in form

  84. solgooner abonglahor will get his chance.

    He is better than Defoe…….

  85. sol, yes Song at times looked like a better attacker than his team’s forwards!

silver, it was after that dust-up at Stamford Bridge where members of both teams acted like the petulant assholes they are. It’s especially the kind of behavior you get when MU don’t get their way.

  86. Gerrard, Ferdinand or Terry. You call that a choice??!
can I have David James please??
I’m sure Capello knows what he is doing…ahem.

  87. Song must play DM without doubt. As a centre back he maybe good but he has the handicap that both kolo and gallas have, which is HEIGHT.

Since it is becoming extremely unlikely that a centre back will be signed, we should keep gallas and toure as first choice and djouru as back up (and senderos.. bus driver maybe?).

Lets keep song purely as DM because he is the only one I see in our squad at this moment for that role. I have heard about the denilson and diaby arguement for that role but I must say I remain resolutely UNCONVINCED.

  88. I think anyone believing The Sun at this point is being incredibly gullible, but: isn’t there ANY kind of regulation in the UK against TELLING LIES in a newspaper? It’s just unbelieavable the shite they can get away with. Seriously, this people should be at least fined for their intentional, systematic and blatant lies. Does no one discuss these things in the UK? Is this just accepted? Is it just considered “free speech”?

  89. ENGLAND CAPTAINCY..

Owen hargreaves or Joe cole.. PERIOD

  90. naga please Joe Cole or Hargreaves????? Are you having a laugh……….

  91. “Personally, I would tell Ferdinand he had the role, wait for him to smile and then tell him he’d been ‘merked’ and give it to someone else.”

LOL. I’d forgotten that show – it was budget television. Beadle beat him to it by 20 years. Oh man, the best thing about it wasn’t the wind-ups; It was the backstage camera they put on Rio. What a strange guy he is, giggling like a schoolgirl on nitrous at his inane little pranks. What a sense of humour.

I bet he considers himself a dressing-room joker. Imagine getting ‘murked’ on a daily basis!

  92. NAGA NO WAY Theo Walcott or Jermaine Jenas

  93. Why not make Joey Barton England captain?

  94. Joey Barton? Not a bad pick. Makes sense to have a criminal leading a criminally poor team. But then John Terry fits that bill as well.

This is England captaincy lark is Hobson’s choice.

  95. Terry, Barton,

    What’s the difference?

One commits his assaults on the training ground wheras the other commits his assaults on the playing field.

  96. John Terry as England captain is a distressing thought. The fact that Rio was a close second is doubly distressing. I assume Rio’s silver medal in the captaincy race makes him a shoe-in for vice-captain.

Granted, they are both superb CBs (Ferdinand easily eclipsed Terry last season) but without doubt they are also two utterly repulsive and thoroughly disgraceful individuals. They are an embarrassment and a slur on this country’s sporting history.

It is a very sad day for English football. :(

  97. davebluez,

I dislike both obviously but I think Terry is far worse. Terry is one of the dirtiest players ever but gets away with it. I also that think Rio is a far better player.

  98. Silver

The problem with Phillipe-Flop (the Swiss Salmon as he’s known in our section) is that he has the turning circle of a bus.

  99. Alex

I agree. I meant it’s doubly distressing that the choice was either one or the other. My dislike of Terry runs much deeper as I used to be such a huge admirer of his when he was younger (remember the talk of him coming to Arsenal?) but I always thought Rio was overrated. Now, I think Rio is a much better CB in all aspects. I see a level of thuggery in JT’s game that never used to be there, it’s bizarre, as if he tries too hard to hurt players rather than play the ball and ironically sometimes comes off worse himself because of that.

They are both shocking examples of everything I was brought up to understand as being wrong about being a captain (and a decent human being).

Rio is just a twat who makes bad non-footballing decisions because he is a natural cretin. Terry, on the other hand, strikes me as having a genuine nasty, vindictive streak running through him. Not a nice person at all.

  100. Capello picked the worst of two evils!

  101. Commiserations about Brazil NY Marcus it wasnt helped by the Argies fallen all over the place like Drogba. Unfortunatley I missed Songs performance during the tournament but I am looking forward to seeing him hve a sustained run in the team. I was surprised to see how seriously some other Federations are taking this tournament. Did you see the Nigerians obliterate the Belgians 4-1. There like absolute robots. And that Nigerian No 7. Ogbuke…awesome.Looks like a good final with the Argies vs Nigeria. best of all Songs coming home a little tired but injury free that can only be good news.

  102. G4L–thanks but many Brazilians like me were hoping Argentina would thrash us. I was actually hoping for a scoreline like 6-0! It would hurt but it’s what the CBF need to get out of this delusional crapfest they’re passing off as Brazilian football. South American football federations ALWAYS take the Olympics seriously, G4L, as do the Africans. It’s really only Europe that doesn’t value Olympic football. Me, I just like watching football, so I just follow it as entertainment — tho I’d like for Brazil to finally get its gold medal only because it would finally shut the media up every 4 years!

I’m shocked and happy that the Brazilian women beat the mighty German women 4-1 in the semis! Never thought that would happen. I think it would be fantastic if the Brazilian women got the gold before the men ever did. Further humiliation for Dunga and the CBF.

Nigeria was unbelievable against Belgium — yes, Ogbuke! Sheesh! Arsene, sign that boy!

  103. davebluez,

I used to feel the same way about Terry especially since Tony Admas used to really rate him. I do remember talk of Terry coming to Arsenal in 2003 ie prior to Roman’s invasion and being very happy about it! Please don’t tell anyone I said that, but its the truth I’m afraid. Instead Kolo got promoted to centreback and stayed there ever since.

Terry definitely became more of a thug when Moanrinho took over. I also used to think that Rio was overrated but not anymore. He’s still a twat though. A natural cretin! Nicely put. LOL.

  104. davebluez PSML about Sendy, turning circle of a bus!!!

  105. Go super eagles!!!!!

  106. I hope we beat argentina but in all honsesty I can’t see it happening.

    Edu is a bad boy….

  107. I agree that David James is captain material — a thoughtful, experienced player– but he may just be too intelligent for his teammates. I’m sure he would have been particularly helpful to younger players. Instead you get the raw raw, never-say-die warrior type. Oh well.

  108. ALL HAIL THE ENGLAND TEAM

Michael Owen has just been offered £140k a week, on a 3 year contract. This goes to show that English players are the best in the world.

Just imagine if Arsenal players were predominantly english. We would then be favourites every year for the PL, and no more embarassing questions for AW at the press conference.

Just imagine a line up like James, Terry, Ferdinand, A. Cole, Sagna, Lampard, Fabregas, J. Cole, Rooney, Adebayor, Walcott.

We would win the CL, the World Cup, the Inter Galatic Cup, everything !!

Come on AW, sign some english players.

    It would be the ultimate.

  109. Muppet.

Ridiculously, your first sentence is not a sarcastic one.

  110. Actually 140K a week for Owen shows everything wrong with English football, the guy didn’t play a full game in 5 years…and just because RVP was injured half a season some fans want his head on a stick….Then we are mad that Ade who played all last season scoring 30 goals is asking for a better deal….go figure the crazy world we live in.

  111. Guys I just read on the Newspaper in Singapore that Michael Silvestre is highly likely to come to Arsenal from Man Utd! Imagine that! The paper says that Wenger is bringing him in not just as a squad player nor a cover from Clichy at LB but rather to partner Gallas in the middle of the defence~

He reportedly had agreed to join Man City principally but decided to join Arsenal when he found out that Wenger wants him. It is also reported he might even be ready for the game with Arsenal this weekend.

  112. they just announced he’s coming on setanta.

  113. this is a part from the concerning interview, it’s my own translation, so without confirmation:

    Arsenal missed me, affirms Rosický
It’s the 26. January and it’s about the 9. minute of the match in the english cup between Arsenal and Newcastle. Tomáš Rosický has to be changed because of an injury. Noone on the world would have expected, that his popliteal ligamentum would sort him out of the game for eight months.
The midfielder of Arsenal will not make the introduction of the new jear neither. He intends his Comeback in september. He believes, that he will return to the ‘gooners’ in the same situation as when he left them – in front of the table.
With a bit of exaggeration one could say, that you start a new career after a long build-up. With which aims are you entering it in september?

„At Arsenal I wish, that I play at the front as last season. And first of all, that I will be healthy. I think, that Arsenal payed for the fact last season, that we, me and Van Persie, stayed out of the game for a long while. Wouldn’t we have been injured, it could have been different. As long as we stay together and healthy, we can think of the highest ranks.

For czech fans you are a star, in England you still have to fight for this status yet. Until which status do you want to get personally in your career?

I definitely don’t look ahead in that way. For me it’s important this season, that I stay healthy within it. But I tell you, what’s quite encouraging for me. That’s a statistic of the fights from Arsenal with the rest of the great Four (ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool), plus Tottenham, which is a great opponent for us. With me in the line-up Arsenal hasn’t lost them yet.

So Arsenal has luck, because the first of these big matches expects you not until the end of october, this could be already the month of your return to the pitch. In any case the ‘gooners’ have to score fully on their own yet from the introduction of the league, so that they occupy the front. Surely the ambitions of the club will not have changed.

As Arsenal, so all the others are coming to the season with just one aim as well: to win whatever. Regardless wether Premier League or Champions League. So it was every year and hasn’t changed untill now either.

Only that Arsenal went through a very painful end of a well played last season, where it lost everything by and by, what it has worked for. Do you have learned from that?

We have grown more experienced from that, what we have gone through. Last year we made a big step forwards in comparison to the season 2006/2007. After the final round we stayed back four points behind the leading Manchester United. I think, that we will be a bit more experienced, even that we have lost some players. But I’ve said this recently already once: we will play for the titel furthermore, though people don’t count with us. The same situation has been a year ago, when Henry left, who was a much bigger ikon in comparison to the lads which have left now. And even this we have coped with.
Can you say, in what concrete the done experience could express?
I remember the match against Birmingham (23. February), where the thing with Eduardo happened. The lads were leading with 2:1, only that Gael Clichy made a terrible stupid penalty in the last minutes. Allthough he played the whole of the season excellent, improved enormously and he became a brilliant back. But there he failed and I believe, that now nothing comparable could happen to him any more, because he is much more experienced and distinct. At such moments you can describe it.

Cesc Fabregas designated the match against Birmingham, which ended 2:2, as the breakpoint of the season for Arsenal. From then on all went against you. Do you agree with him?

This was definitely a match, which we should have won clearly. We were leading and even had further big chances. I think, that Bendtner had a run there onto the goal alone with Adebayor and Adebayor didn’t pass, but shot. He didn’t score. Similar negative things happened there terribly much. All began with the injury of Eduardo, then Gael’s mistake came along and afterwards this thing with William (Gallas). You can say, that we probably there began to loose the ground under our feet. (loose our feet).

Captain Gallas didn’t agree with the penalty then and went off with ostenation to the cabine. Afterwards he was criticized heavily for his behaviour, that he failed as a captain. Could you notice that much at the atmosphere within the inner club?

Of course it wasn’t an easy situation. On the other hand William was captain for the first season and it’s not easy to wear the armband in such a team. I think he has learned from that. These are things, which he could do in a better way, but he knows that himself the most. ((?? ): He has experienced that a lot and this time of all times in a bad way (smiles). ?? translation from the sun: He’s really immersed in everything and that was something he just got immersed in too deeply ???) Otherwise in my opinion he is a good leader of the team and will continue to be the captain, even if there are some speculation in england, if he will remain it.

In the last season you had begun to play excellently, but within a few weeks you lost everything. Couldn’t that leave one’s mark on the selfconfidence of the team for the next year, too?

I don’t think so. In fact we haven’t dominated the end of the season, but that won’t have any effects on the new one. Now less than ever, where the lads beat Real Madrid in the preparation after all.

People are telling from Arsenal, that it probably peforms the finest football in europe. Only that it’s necessary for the success in long-term competitions, to know how to win even in these matches, where you play badly. Do you manage that?

Definitely yes, already last season we had matches, where we didn’t play well, but managed to win. For example the match in Everton, which we won 4:1. We shot on to the goal four times at the whole and it was four goals from that. Though we played badly, Everton was better. With this we had mainly problems in my first season at Arsenal. And in addition the dying in beauty… Of course it’s also a result from the fact, that everyone is defending against us very much. Sporadically we have problems in these total final phases, when it’s of this calcareous/limy appearance. (???) On the other hand it was interesting to follow the different styles of play during the Emirates Cup. In that, what we are performing, noone can compare with us.

Only that you have to win some trophy additionally yet.

That’s understood, therefore the whole thing is done, to manage to win and good football, which we are performing, to turn to some trophy.

A further such characteristic feature of Arsenal is, that you leave the leadership to the opponent and then the score is chasing you until the final minutes.

In my opinion we didn’t have such difficulties with this already any more in the last season as in the year before, where we lost perhaps every of these games. That was horrible. Now that’s improoving again furthermore.
