Three Points In The Baggies

Arsenal 1 – 0 West Bromwich Albion

1 – 0 Nasri (4)

The Premier League season kicked off with a win, three points taken from a fixture where no less would have been expected. It was not the best Arsenal performance that will be seen this season at The Emirates but it was not the best Arsenal team that you would expect to see during the coming nine months either. Bereft of half a dozen players from the starting line-up, the outcome was not that surprising. To dismiss title hopes on one performance is naive at best; to ponder what would have happened had we been playing one of the better sides in the division is an exercise in futility. We were not; yesterday’s opponents were West Bromwich Albion, no-one else.

That does not mean that some questions cannot be asked but before doing so it is worth looking at the bright spots. Samir Nasri removed a millstone from around his neck with his first goal and a cracking one it was too. Bendtner’s deft pass to Clichy and Denilson’s run followed by the cutback for Nasri to score were worthy of any first choice XI. That it was the peak of the afternoon does not diminish the play or goal. It was a promising debut by the new boy and already he is pushing Hleb’s total goals for a season. If he can keep it up, there is every reason to be optimistic that he is more a return to Pires than the Byelorussian.

A major plus point was the performance of Johan Djourou. He looked solid and with his pace, has the ability to cover behind Gallas. It was fairly obvious that the two could not really compete in an aerial duel with Miller but Djourou showed a positional awareness that belied his young years. Gallas meanwhile played his best game for the club for a while and I hope that is a sign of things to come. He and Djourou outthought their opponents and whilst not shutting them out completely – a rarity in any match these days – they compensated for their disadvantages well. Gallas was unlucky with a twenty-five yard shot that proved Toure is not the only centre back at the club who can strike the ball cleanly.

Sagna and Clichy were their ever dependable selves. The former is keeping up his performance levels from last season whilst Clichy never ceases to impress with his energy. Between the four of them, they kept Albion chances to a minimum and having kept two clean sheets, there is no certainty for Toure to be a shoo-in once he is fully fit although I suspect he will replace Djourou at Fulham. Almunia, meanwhile, did all that was required of him. His distribution was a tad wayward at times but that can be worked on and should improve as matches come thick and fast.

Playing Eboue in the centre of midfield was the logical step with Nasri and Walcott on the flanks. His defensive understanding freed Denilson to allow his attacking tendencies to flourish more readily than in Arnhem during the week. Eboue may get slated somewhat unfairly at times but he brought balance to the midfield and covered well on the right when Sagna pushed forward. It is too early to say whether this is a more natural position for him but if he can produce the solidity of performance on a regular basis, who knows?

For those positives, some concerns. Adebayor looked sluggish. His touch is out but that will hopefully return with more matches. However, the jeering he received is counter-productive. It might have only been a ‘one-off’ but it does not send a message of support for the team, irrespective that it was directed at one player. Adebayor cannot be faulted for his effort; he covered a lot of ground in attack. Time perhaps for the summer shenanigans to be put to one side as the season proper has started.

Alongside him, Bendtner displayed some good touches but he had a tendency to drop too deep at times. He is more effective in the box and will be disappointed not to have scored with a free header. The final player who caused headscratching was Theo. It was a mixed bag from him. Some good runs and delivery but easily channelled into cul-de-sac’s by defenders. He has, we are told, been working on this area of his game in the summer but there was little evidence of it yesterday.

It is too early to condemn individuals but a full strength Arsenal side may well have torn Albion to pieces. They worked hard and had one very good chance when Djourou cleared off the line. With bringing a couple of saves out of Almunia, their contribution to the game is being ‘upped’ but in truth, had they scored I think we would have nicked another.

Arsene said after the game,

I’m not really worried about the lack of goals because I don’t feel we were sharp enough to finish off what we created. I believe when everyone is fit we can create clear cut chances. At times today the final ball was not good enough, too heavy, not timed well enough, and I feel we will improve a lot on that.

He summed up the game pretty well, I think. It is too soon to judge but it will be better when the injured are walking again.

Justin Hoyte joined Middlesbrough yesterday and I wish him well. Not much speculation about concerning Arsene’s one signing before the second leg of the Champions League although signing Xabi Alonso seems unlikely given that he is cup-tied for the whole of the European campaign. Liverpool may want £16m for him but it seems that they will be unlikely to get that sum. I know that it is one season out of a five-year deal but given the tournament is one that Arsene has prioritised, it would be a strange signing in that respect. No doubt that he will bring one of his usual style of signings to the club instead.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Is Eboue the new Grimandi? He is not our best right back, central midfielder or right midfielder, but he can play all of them adequately. Perhaps his best position is the bench?

  2. Good well-balanced review as usual, Yogi.

Although WBA, as a yardstick, are an unknown quantity, I was pleased with the overall performance and Nasri, in particular, looked at ease and very industrious. Djourou also gave an assured performance, but what was Gallas screaming at him for after he saved that one on the line? He seemed to give as good as he got and I take that as a positive sign.

The best way for us to forgive Ade is for him to increase his conversion rate, although there is no point whatsoever in booing him.

I was worried that we wouldn’t create many chances with the side as fielded but I needn’t have worried on that score. But again this has to set against the quality of the opposition.

Yes, there was still a lot of indecision around the box, but, overall, I was satisified with that start from that team.

  3. Nick

Quite possibly right – I’d rather he was a Grimandi than a Garde.

    Kelsey

I’d agree with the comments about Adebayor. Once he starts scoring, things will drift into the background. Unitl next summer that is.

With Gallas it is hard to work out what is going on at times. I suspect Djourou was being given a hard time because of something earlier. As you right say, it was good that JD stood up to him; not many others of the youngsters do.

    YW

  4. Good post yogi:

Just curious? Is Alonso cup tied till january or for the whole campaign?

  5. i think ebuoe had a decent game. he should be allowed this role with lesser teams. walcotts still needs to be more confident but the players did quite well with nasri showing why he might be better than hleb.

  6. Exactly, Nick. Eboue is a great squad player. He doesn’t produce consistently enough to be a starter, but he’d help a lot when he’s focused.

I just love the way people are over-reading this result yesterday.

The closeness of the result was down to Adebayor missing two sitters, and failing to pass when doing so would have been an 80% chance for Nasri to get a second.

The team created and made it look so easy.

  7. I have to say I agree with your comments- the back four were good and I was particularly happy to watch a composed performance from Djourrou. I know Senderos has his strengths but to see Djourrou jump up and beautifully control a ball before casually slipping his marker and playing it comfortably away reaffirmed my strong belief that Senderos should be at best fourth choice possibly fifth behind Song.

Other than Nasri’s contribution, which was excellent, I thought that the brightest point about the game was Denis Neilson- if he can play like that week in week out, I think he has a real chance of being a 1st XI player.

Three points, Tottenham lose- can’t argue with that!

  8. Good stuff as always Yogi.

My (slightly lofty) predictions for the squad this season:

    1. Eboue will finally come good.
    2. Aging Toure will be edged out of the starting line-up by a strong Djourou/Gallas partnership.
    3. Toure may start to play more in midfield, or as a utility player, providing defensive cover when needed.
    4. Walcott’s development will reach a temporary plateau of being merely above average, but he will also show more consistency.
    5. Fabregas – dare I say it – might have a bit of a wobbly season. He’ll still put in a handful of exemplary match-winning performances, but I just have a gut feeling that he will struggle to maintain his consistency this year. However if the team can learn to be just as effective without Cesc as with Cesc, then that is a good thing.
    6. Van Persie will stay fit and score more goals than Adebayor this season.
    7. But both van Persie and Adebayor’s positions in the line-up will be more under threat than ever though – from the strong forms of Bendtner and Vela.
    8. Lack of quality back-up for both Sagna and Clichy will prove most costly to us, more than any other position, and Wenger will be looking to bring in a promising full-back or two during the January window.
    9. The second half of the season will all be about the strong and renewed forms of Song, Rosicky, Djourou and Bendtner.
    10. Armand Traore who? Kieran Gibbs (if he doesn’t get loaned out) will make that left-back position his own during the Carling Cup.
    11. We will not fall apart at the end of the season like last, rather this time, we will start the season in a very low gear, gradually building up more momentum towards the end. Consistency in defense with the likes of Djourou and Song will give us more confidence protecting 1-0 leads.
    12. Bischoff is going to blow you all away*

*in 3 years time when he has a really good season and then leaves on a free, for a big-money contract at AC Milan.

Bischoff IS our new Flamini replacement, in that it will take him a year or two to really fit in. The new midfield signing Wenger is planning to make in the coming weeks will be more like a new Gilberto replacement, except not so rusty and past his prime.

  9. Ateeb

Alonso is cup-tied for the whole ECL campaign as he played in the ECLQ in Liege. Barry would be cup-tied until the KO phases having played for Villa in the UEFA Cup.

    YW

  10. YW,

My understanding is that Alonso would be tied only for the prelim rounds. Wrong?

  11. Good Analysis!

Nasri will be a giant for Arsenal, more than anything I was impressed with his fight. I read here where some of us said they were not sure he was the deal, what about now?

Eboue was decent, but his shooting? practice more or dont shoot, please!

I believe Walcott will undoubtedly be a star, unless we have forgotten how well he started to play at the end of last season and even in some of the pre season matches. he has it!

Blackstock, why the negative predictions regarding Walcott and Fab?

Ade will be good I’m sure, I am concerned by his constant attempts at side footing the ball like Henry, instead of a good strike or a pass.

Djourou and Denilson are players who can fill the positions that most were worried about.

Sorry to see Hoyte leave but this is best for his career, I hope and pray he does great.

All in all the team will be great this season and this was great way to start the season.

    God bless!!!

  12. Ole

No he is out for the whole kit and caboodle as he started the match. Had he been an unused sub, he would have been OK.

    YW

  13. Well, that’s very bad news. I like Alonso. He’s not the monster most people want, nor is he the right midfielder I’m wanting, but he would be a typical Wenger last-minute bargain. Fancy being sold for Barry – not surprised he’s miffed and demanding a move. But a player we can’t use in Europe this season would surely be a very bum plan? For one thing, Alonso is more suited to Europe than to the Premiership where a Brute-Enforcer is needed. For another, Denilson or Eboue would be our European holding midfielder without them having the run of games to form a partnership with Cesc.

Blackstock’s point 8 – no decent cover for Clichy or Sagna – is spot on. That’s just as much a worry to me as the two big holes in midfield – centre and right. I’m not wildly optimistic about either Rosicky or Bischoff or, for that matter Van Persie, being fit for the bulk of the season.

Didn’t we get money for Muamba – now there was a promising defensive midfielder! – as well as for Bentley? If the answer is yes, would Veloso really be beyond our means? I’m still wondering about that 30 million – NYmarcus where are you? – and whether it really exists.

  14. Gallas had a go at Djourou for not pushing up quickly enough and playing Miller (I think) onside.

I have no problem if the captain berates a player for a mistake but Gallas lost it at Djourou yesterday which was unprofessional and unnecessary. Almunia even stepped in to shout at Gallas and he needs to control himself better if he is to be a success as captain.

  15. Mia,

I have often made the point about lack of cover at full back. Out of what we have I would use Eboue as replacement for Sagna but Traore is not ready to be deputy to Clichy and I am not convinced that Gallas can still play fullback. Its not a great situation.

  16. Blackstock,

Could you please explain how any team is supposed to be as effective without Cesc as with him? He’s a real genius and underrated in my opinion. This is the problem that we have in that he is so good there is no way we can be as good when he does not play. Any team would miss a player of his calibre; he’s irreplaceable.

I disagree strongly with your prediction about Cesc struggling unless it is because he doesn’t have a partner worthy of him. I think that Cesc will improve this year, fuelled by his success in the Euros.

I think he is the best player in the world and will prove it soon enough. He is the uncrowned King.

  17. ALEX Will only improve if he has REAL players alongside him in midfield, Deco had a great game for Chelsea and he was well within our budget.
Look at Chelsea depth no Droghba , Essien Balack gets injured they bring on Malouda , Wright Phillips, Ferrera, on the bench compare it with our bench

  18. I am talking about Cesc

  19. BLACSTOCK. Tours is 4 years younger than Gallas and is recovering from strenuous time with Ivory coast. Gallas blows up too easily I think Song will eventually replace him.

Neither Traore or Gibbs are great defensively.

If RVP s¡cores more goals than Egobayor we are in deep shite he may get 18 if he stays fit, is not crippled playing for Holland, and he regains his scoring touch. we have to persist with EGO I wish he had gone and we had Roque.

Rosicky has to prove himself injury free when he returns

  20. Deco proved that Spanish players adapt quickly, Modric has no idea how to track back, because hes not used to EPL style, but Torres, Alonso, fitted in quickly. THe same applies to most french players, lets hope we get someone with experience PLEASE

  21. MIA who is available and not cup tied for ECL? YAYA , Alonso, only Barry in 2009. who else is there?

  22. I thought Djourou looked relaxed and at ease yesterday, but then he always has done when playing against lesser opposition. It’s how he copes when asked to step up against the big boys that’s the issue, and yesterday’s performance did nothing to reassure me that anything had improved.

Yes he looked relaxed and ease when on the ball (he’s without doubt more composed on the ball than Phillipe-Flop), but his positioning was woeful at times, and on countless occasions he was caught standing next to or directly behind Gallas when Gallas challenged for the ball, which is a schoolboy error and tantamount to centre-back roulette. It was only the fortunate fact that time and time again Gallas did win the ball, or at least enough of the ball, that didn’t expose Djourou’s constant ball watching.

If you’re looking for a reason as to why Gallas started screaming at him, it’s because all game he was telling Djourou to drop off, or go wider, or come in, or push forward, and it must have driven him mad. I know it drove me mad, and I honestly thought we were going to concede a goal through Djourou repeating the same mistakes. He was either too far away from Gallas, inviting a run between the two of them, or he was too close to him. It’s was no coincidence that after a first half of West Brom initially punting the long ball towards the smaller Glichy and the inexperienced Djourou, they then changed tact and spent the second half launching balls towards Gallas. Why was that? Why aim long balls at the more experienced guy? Because even my cat had worked out by that point that Djourou was following the ball, and it was only a matter of time that a knock-on would free up a runner into the space that Djourou should have been occupying.

I thought Gallas was wrong to scream at him like that, but I can fully understand the sentiment that drove him to it. There were so many almost opportunities for West Brom players to be put through on the goal, and that only didn’t happen – not because of Arsenal’s defensive superiority – but because of West Brom’s inability to pull off the right touch/pass/flick at the right moment, plus they just didn’t get the rub of the green. I want Djourou to do well, I really want him to step up, and I certainly want him over his fellow countryman, but he still scares me. A lot.

As does the fact that our two strikers refuse to pass to each other in front of goal. Great.

And worse than all of that: we had plastic bottles of Carlsberg at half time? What’s the world coming to? :(

  23. blackstock…

“Aging Toure” ? well, he is younger than gallas.

kolo is in NO way any less capable than gallas. gallas played well but he doesnt seem to have learnt any humility from last season, as Alex notes. One would have expected that with his last seasons antics he would have kept his head well below the parapet and worked hard.

kolo is arsenal through and through and if someone needs to be “edged” out its gallas not toure.

As for the wingbacks we have gibbs and eboue which is enough IMO. its in the centreback that we have problems, we looked ever vulnerable from long balls. and it is a position which i feel, is more crucial than any other area in the field.

i saw chelsea a bit today and it is clear they are more stronger and stable defensively than us. another problem thats rearing its ugly head is that we simply cant seem to finish teams off. a bit more ruthlessness please…where are you dudu?

Mia has a good point. i had almost forgotten about muamba, he would have been extremely useful for us. but as of now there is only ONE MAN for DM and thats song unless arsene gets another one..

    good assessment yogi..

    cheers all..

  24. Anybody know the latest on DUDU?

  25. Sol, I don’t know, I didn’t pay much attention to who came off the bench in the qualifiers. But anyway, fact is, we’ve already rejected all the obvious candidates, because they weren’t good enough, or cheap enough, or imposed impossible terms, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Alonso arriving at 11.55 on 31 August. Good player, probably a bargain, but it means we’ll be experimenting in the CL with Denilson, Eboue, Song, Bischoff, etc., not a cheering thought when you consider we could get Bayern, Juve and the terrifying-looking Dynamo Kiev in the group stages alone!

I’m now projecting my hopes onto the January window (by which time Rosicky is bound to be injured again!) but the cup-tied situation will be worse rather than better. Silva should be OK, if someone else hasn’t grabbed him of course.

  26. Alex Ice Cream

No, Traore has always looked awful defensively at any level above the reserves. In addition he seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Is he injured or on loan? Gibbs? Not yet, not unless he improves dramatically on his showing against Sevilla over the next couple of months. Eboue on the right wouldn’t be so bad, I suppose, but I fear he won’t be available because he’ll always be playing right midfield.

  27. Solgooner, Mia.
While it may have just been paper talk, it seemed Deco wanted to lay for Scolari and Silva doesn’t want to leave Spain.
In his interview on Arsenal tv on Friday AW said he was looking to sign someone who really wanted to play for Arsenal. Also according to Lee Dixon AW said to him his concern was how young the midfield was for CL football.
Think this rules out Barry, Alonso and the likes of Silva.
As an aside looked at the line ups for Man U v Newcastle. ManU’s bench wouldn’t fill me with confidence!

  28. Mia,

Traore looks better as a left-wing prospect – as you said he’s not great defensively and that’s being kind. Its way too soon to be talking about Gibbs also.

Too many holes in the squad for my liking. We have also sold Hoyte who was not good enough but least he was another body.

ManU couldn’t get Silva so we have no chance. H ewants to stay in Spain and will cost more than a couple of mil so that’s us out!

  29. djorou is king i told yall he was good enough nd i think he is good enough for a first team start, Wenger said he expected him 2 make the most out of his oppurtunity nd although it was west brom and we were at home i think he did beautifully well, if toure cant sit up nd fight for a place in midfield like eboue is doin now, i wonder what de future holds in store for him…. Walcott is better comin off de bench honestly he is….i think i prfer eboue startin dere nd walcott l8ta takin his place, rather than him startin.

  30. Well well,

It turns out when United have injuries and absentees their squad lacks depth.

As so many of us have been trying to explain to the other half for quite some time.

Their bench said it all! It does not mean our squad is perfect, but those that constantly harp on about United’s squad need to take a second look.

At least our youngsters are a bit special!

  31. Good luck to Justin Hoyte at Boro. I liked his head down attitude & it`s a real pity he didn`t make it with us.

Another English EPL player that we have producedc I might add.

It`s a shame Alonso is now cup tied as he probably wouldn`t want to come to us because of that either.

A monor point on D`jourou – he HAS done it against the big boys & played well in draws at OT & the Bridge two seasons ago. The Chelsea match paired him with Big Phil.

  32. Denilson’s been impressive. Walcott atill has ways to go and might only ever be really good as a striker. Guess AW feele he still needs to improve his overall responsibilities by playing him on the RW. We don’t look like we’ll be as explosive as last season but for some reason the unit looks quite effortless together.

Who to buy to incorporate into the team quickly ? Honestly I do not know. Veloso was my last guess

  33. JohnN

If that’s true about Silva – and it does sound very plausible – it settles it then. I’ll shut up!

ManU’s bench, maybe not, but Chelsea’s doesn’t look bad. Why are Chelsea fans always called Jason? Just heard one on talksport saying he doesn’t think they’ll be beaten all season. Arrogant little twerp. I like Essien and Joe Cole but the rest I wouldn’t touch with a barge-pole. Don’t despair, Foetus Detritus with a broken leg and long-term ankle-ligament problem will soon be arriving from Outer Mongolia.

  34. Danny. They had RONALDO, Tevez, Nani, Anderson missing and Carrick hurt

WE have Cesc, EDS, Rosicky, Senderos, Diably, and Bischoff

only our first two are equal.

  35. Guiiterez was available for 10 million from Real Mallorca hes a great winger and very defensive as well and 10 million was in our budget.

  36. MIA TRAORE was in the stands yesterday with all the walking wounded, Rosicky, EDS, etc

  37. In your opinion Sol. I do not agree. A fit Rosicky is a more complete player than Nani. I like Anderson but that’s about it.

Anyway Sol…now look at the bench that left them with.

Because ours still contained Van Persie, Vela, Ramsey, Toure and Wilshire. There’s had nothing like that quality.

  38. Sol,

Gutierrez is not our class, don’t get excited after one game. Judge him on a full season.

  39. DANNY I saw him play many time for Real Mallorca, he was excellent Mallorca only sold him because they are a selling club, just as WEngerspin says we are

  40. Ok, I disagree again. He’s not in our league as this season will prove.

Did you check their bench yet?

  41. DANNY How many games has Rosicky played since he joined us? RVP is half walking wounded, Ramsey has 17 Championship games under his belt, Vela has lots of experience in La Liga, and he should be in front of woeful Walcott, Ramsey is our best young talent

  42. And their bench contained O’Shea, G.Neville and the collective experience and talent of Possebon, Da Silva, Evans and Gibson.

    Leaves me trembling!

Why does everything worry you, Sol?

They have no depth and if Ronaldo gets injured again, they’ll finish outside the top 3.

Let’s not discuss this further because you are so down on everything Arsenal, it is utterly depressing!

Everyone else’s players, whoever they are, are great! All our’s are rubbish!

  43. There is a simple objective way to show that Manu’s squad is better than ours – they have won back to back Prems and the CL to boot and we have won fu** all.

    End of discussion.

  44. Sol,

I had the same thoughts watching Gutierrez today. He would have been ideal.

The Man U bench was suprisingly poor today. Lets see how they cope if their injuries continue.

Now Hoyte has gone does that mean AW will sign two new players ?

  45. Sol – do you actually like anything about Arsenal? The colour of the shirt? The name? Any tiny thing about the club the rest of us love give you any pleasure at all?

  46. Alex,

Not that simple. Chelsea have the best squad depth, United have been fortunate with injuries.

  47. Adebayor was rusty but again you can see his goal to chances conversion ratio is not high – 1:4 at best. Our midfield makes him look good

Denilson good but faded in seond half

Shooting practice required – Eboues technique is awful, ditto Denilson with reasonable shooting chanes. Work the keeper. Stay back after training I’d recommend

Nasri – assured, good movement, intelligent, hard to diposess, prepared to shoot. A real +

Djourou – assured but needs to add more aggression. He is very tall so should have won more aerial ball against Miller. The CBs need to decide when they are dropping off / picking up. To me they use the offside too much when the opposition only have one attacker. Just have one CB attack the ball and one sweep behind like Man U

Almunia looked motivated and strong. If he makes another step forward he can be top class

Walcott – worrying performance. But early days

  48. DANNY YOU ARE TALKING CRAP.I have been very positive the last 2 weeks but agree with ALEX and many others we need strengthening is every Arsenal ex player wrong?

  49. Danny,

Are you seriously suggesting that we have had a better squad than Manu over the last 2 seasons and the difference between them and us is luck with injuries?

  50. STEW Read my comments for the last 2 years. Why do you think I have been a supporter for 55 years.

  51. Alex,

I’m suggesting that we do now. If you take Ronaldo out of their squad, who’s going to get you 30 plus goals. If we take Gallas and Toure out, we have Djourou and Song. Who do they have?

The point is the depth of the squad is an overstated issue, otherwise Chelsea would be two time champs.

United had a better first eleven, that’s how they got the job done.

  52. DANNY take off the tinted glasses, we have some great players, Cesc, Nasri, Sagna, Clichy, Toure,, Gallas , and some great walking wounded, Rosicky, RVP, EDS and some great youngsters, Wilshere, Merida, Djouru, Song, Vela, and some iffy players, like Walcott, Ebuoe, Senderos. and Bentdner who is inconsistent, and EGO who misses 5 out of six, Thats why we need strengthening

  53. DANNY based on todays performance Chelsea do have the depth, in most positions. Drogbha, or Aneilka and then Shevkenko for the last 5 minutes, Essien, Ballack, Deco, etc

  54. Sol,

Charlie Nick says we’ll win the title with or without signings. So that’s not every ex-player, now is it. Beside, their credentials to judge our squad are no greater than you or I.

I want a strong, powerful, defensive Midfielder too, but beyond that, we are close.

Look, we disagree, I feel we can compete and that the younger members of the squad are growing stronger. It makes no odds and certainly is not personel.

But it is true, you do look on adoringly at all other players that are not ours.

  55. I agree Chelsea have the most depth, but they have done for two seasons and that has not been enough.

  56. Danny,

When I say squad I automatically include the first team in that. United have been the best and better than us – first eleven, squad, winning trophies.

Who will get them 30 goals? The expensive striker that they are going to buy.

Anyway, we have discussed this ad nauseum on this blog. Its obvious that we need players but we will probably get one at most so we just have to get behind the players that we do have, Greedy and dare I say it, even Eboue.

2 poor performances but 2 wins. Let’s enjoy the new season!

  57. DANNY MORE RUBBISH .What other players, Droghba, Ronaldo, Tevez, I dont look adoringly I wish they were playing for us.

  58. How can I take the tinted glasses off, I support Arsenal, I’m meant to have them, aint I.

That’s what being a fan is all about.

By the way, that was a lot of great players you named. Easy, there Sol. You may possibly start to believe in those lads!

  59. Gutierrez and the rest Sol.

  60. ALEX RIGHT ON Unfortunately MANU will get Berbatov or someone similar, we are lumbered witth what weve got, we have easy first 8 games so lets hope that keeps us rolling, and when we play Stoke EGO can get five goals

  61. I find it strange how so many ignore the statistics when it comes to strikers. Ade scored from 19% of his shots last season in the league, Torres 22%, Eduardo 20%, best, to my recollection was Santa Cruz at 23%. Can’t remember Ronaldo’s stat but it was below Ade’s at about 17%.
The most abused phrase by any commentator is 2He should have scored”.
It is the belief that strikers score a bigger % of their chances that make people believe Ade is very wasteful and we are lucky when the opponents don’t take their chances.
Yes Ade could be better in front of goal, but he is not terrible.

  62. And Alex, if we’re discussing their squad depth and you say that player they are about to sign, you’re not really giving us a chance. They’ve dropped points, we have not, it’s the new season, let’s try and be positive.

  63. Danny living in Mallorca I saw Guitterez often, hes a good player and will adapt quickly like Torres and Alonso.

DANNY THATS THE POINT, I always have believed and was lucky enough to know some of the great players in the sixties

  64. And football’s changed a lot Sol, but this is a far more successful spell than we have had under previous management eras.

It doesn’t matter, I believe this squad, maybe with one addition can turn the tide, you don’t. Let’s leave it there.

Time will provide the answers, to this tiresome debate.

  65. DANNY I AGREE, I was friends with George Swidnin , and Billy Wright, and they were useless as Managers AW is the best we have had, its just the board Im pissed off with

  66. Sol:
You can’t possily have a real quality cover for every position. Think about it. Who’se gonna come on for Evra, their Rb sucks, midfield is O.k, dont have a striker, and nani is not a cover for ronaldo anyway. Only a team like chelsea can manage to have good cover, but that’s about it. Even they have just two proven strikers in the form of drogba and anelka. So just relax. And lets not go over to Liverpool, take out Gerrard and Torres and we’ll see how they manage. So comparing with the rest, we are quite decent.

  67. Sol,

I echo your misgivings about the board. I think that we need new direction and I believe that the board will be willing to sell the club soon. They are all getting on also and I think its time for a change.

Arsene is definitely the best manager we have had, let’s hope that he’s right about the squad. You and I agree that we need players but I doubt we will get them.

    Come on you reds!

  68. Alan G, Ade’s conversion stat for last season was 1 in 4.9.

The only player who has said he wants to join us is David Villa and even I admit we don’t really need him. Want yes, need no, not if Eduardo recovers. The other might be Arshavin, who’s said he’d take a pay cut to join Spurs, which means he’d take a double pay cut to come here. He might solve the right-sided problem – surely anyone would be better there than Eboue and Walcott? – but he does seem an unpleasant headcase as well as being pricey and old. I haven’t a clue about Gutierrez but if Wenger actually tried to buy Silva it does mean he too thinks we need someone for that position, which cheers me up.

We keep forgetting little Coquelin. Unsurprisingly since he’s only played one game before limping away into obsurity. But he did look pretty good … and Song isn’t bad and for all I know Bischoff is brilliant – so that’s three, admittedly very young and currently unavailable, players for holding midfield, as well as Denilson and Eboue. I’m not saying it’s good enough but compared to right midfield and left back it looks like riches to me. In fact Song could do a decent job as Beast-Enforcer in the lowlier Premiership games. Doesn’t solve the problem of Europe, of course.

I don’t agree with Danny that we’re competitive. We’re thin and our injury record is frightful and can’t be entirely dismissed as bad luck. But I do see that Wenger’s task is close to impossible. Find a player who wants to come, who is young but also experienced, who is cheap, who isn’t cup-tied and who doesn’t need a work permit. Some job.

  69. Alex Ice Cream

You think the Board will sell and you’re PLEASED? You want a situation like City’s or Liverpool’s? You want Kroenke and Usmanov and the entire future of the club handed over to them? I can’t believe I’m hearing this. Better relegation than that. At least relegation could be temporary.

  70. JohnN, Ade’s problem is that he wears an Arsenal shirt and therefore the naysayers can only see his weaknesses and not his strengths unlike players who play for other teams, who only seem to only have strengths and no weaknesses in their eyes.

Being an Arsenal fan means supporting them through thick and thin not the constant carping on about our short-comings. Try believing in the team for a change, try boosting their confidence by showing unconditional support. So they’re not perfect, so what? Neither is any other team out there no matter what you might think. When I hear the non-stop complaining about how other teams, or other players are better than ours, I wonder if these people are really Arsenal fans? A real fan always thinks their team is the best, otherwise, why bother?

  71. Danny, I agree with you here and I undoubdtedly believe that we were better than Chelsea ans Man U last year if it was not for th injuries, believe that!

Can anyone disagree that if we had our players healthy we would most probably have won the PL and maybe the CL? I do believe.

Sol you seem to think that Anderson and Nani are better than Denilson and Diaby, but that is your opninion. I far from agree with that, our players have been damaged quite a bit so it is hard to see their true potential. I dare you to look back before Diaby and Denilson got their initial injuries and tell me that these players are better.

We just have to hope and pray that our lads will stay healthy! If they do they are the most talented players. Anyone will tell you that as far as playing football Arsenal were the best team last year, they were for 3/4’s of the season. How is it now that we cannot capitalize on our experience is beyond me.

I would rather have Rose tinted glasses on than looking through a pair that only see whats wrong all the time.

I said this before, I would rather have depth in strength than strenght in depth. You can only play a certain amount of players and as has been stated by many if Depth is the key to winning, Chelsea should win every year. We are deeper than we think and many are not as deep as we think. Deep does not mean having players but players who are quality to me.

    Just my 2 cents.

    God Bless!!

  72. Thanks Passenal!

  73. Mia,

Agreed, especially your last paragraph. For all of the reasons that you mention you just sometimes just have to spend the money to get the player you need. To fulfill all the criteria that you mention is very difficult and sometimes you just have to spend the money. We did it before with Bergkamp and Henry and will have to do it again. Whether we will is doubtful.

We aren’t going to get many (any?) new players so we are going to hope that the players that we have recover from injury, stay fit and some do a Flamini.

  74. And does not mind sitting on the bench when our injured first teamers return?

  75. Alex Ice Cream and Solgooner, The problem I have with you guys (not that you care), is that you are “ALWAYS” complaining! Its just a bit much, if you understand.

I ask you both to make a list of the positive about our Club/Team/Manager and you just may seee things a little more positive. Its not as bad as you think.

    Be good!

  76. no disrespect intended!

  77. Mia,

The board are not the youngest and a number of them have little input in the day-to-day running of the club and will probably look to sell soon. Its inevitable. I seriously hope they hand the club over to good hands though, maybe Stan I don’t know. Of course I don’t want those siutations that you say to develop but I do think that a change could be good. The current board won’t be around forever and its a question of who replaces them and the direction that they take the club in.

  78. I would rather win 1-0 than 2-1 or strangely even 3-1. not usually, just at the moment, I think its of high importance that we keep clean sheets so for that reason I was happy to finish 1-0 after having to cope with some pressure. the defence coped well and thats probably what pleased me most about the game other than Nasri’s performance.
If we can get a bit meaner at the back then, and only then, can we genuinely compete for the title.

PS great to see united playing catch up already…HaHa. we have Newcastle very soon.

  79. Paul N,

    No disrepect taken!

I think my posts over the last few days have been a bit cheerier. I have tried to ignore the squad issue and said about us getting behind the team – even Erratic Emmanual!

If we can get players back and fit and keep them that way we have a chance and we’ll play some nice footy along the way.

    Better?!

  80. Alex:
And what exactly makes you come to the conclusion that the best possible way for arsenal to move forward is a change in ownership? Is it because Eduardo and Sagna were not bought for a combined fee of 30m or is it because nasri was just too cheap for your ur spend big liking?

  81. ALex
I think i interpreted your post wrongly:P I thought you’re talking about selling and all…..ignore my previous post….hehe

  82. Cool Alex, I’m glad you are being more positive, that positive! I just dont want anyone to think we are not really good. We cannot allow the lack of one player who we think we need, be the demise or lack of faith in our squad. That would be discounting all of the other wonderful players in our squad, whether thay are young, inexperienced, too short, light weight, injury prone or whatever other problem we can find, the fact is they are good if they CAN stay healthy.

    Be easy homey!!

  83. Just got back from Edinburgh and have caught up with the weekend posts and seen the match highlights.

My blood pressure has risen somewhat.

Whilst Manchester Uniteds draw has been attributed to an injury to Tevez and the absence of Ronaldo, no mention seems to be made of Arsenal’s absence of 6 first team players.

Manchester United haven’t been written off for the premiership but Arsenal seem to have been, judging by the hacks response in the post match press conference. Watching the game, I spotted 2 chances for West Brom, 1 cleared off the line, whilst Arsenal had about 2 clear chances to score, on top of the goal (Walcott, Adebayor).

So now I am reading stuff about changing the board, a change of opinion about Djourou, and mixed opinions about Denilson. Hilarious. All in the space of one game.

Presumably in the next game, Sagna will not longer be any good, we will need new strikers and a new stadium. And who said that Nasri would take a year to bed in and would effectively be useless as a replacement for Hleb ??

Ominously the chavs stuffed Portsmouth 4-0, and my feelings about Deco were wrong, it looks like he’s still got a lot in the locker (forgive the cliche.).

Oh well. We just have to wait for the return of all our players and go from there.

  84. ALEX right again if all our players stay healthy including Cesc, RVP. Rosicky and EDS we can be challenging especially with one more player, But some people here think we are traitors because we bring up a few home truths,

  85. MUPPET Watching Chelski and their bloody strong midfield set us this all up, then MANU were crap, and we mentioned they were missing Ronaldo and Tevez and everyone got het up. they might get Berbatov but Ebuoe is our secret weapon.

  86. EGO nees to get a witch doctor from back home to put a spell on all our players that they stay healthy

  87. @Solgooner – Eboue our secret weapon ? Are you trying your hand at humour ?

  88. I for one do not think you are a traitor Solgooner but just because you many deem something to be true it doesnt have to be said at every opportunity. That still leaves a doom and gloom feeling to many and yourself if we are not strong enough to see the good also. What i have read, is that we complain about not having “one” peice, which we are not entirely sure about (though Wenger does intend to buy) while we dont see all the other great things about this team, that can only stress you out.

We wil shock many this year!

    God bless ya dude!

  89. MUPPET I was the one who knew AW was bringing 2 players from Kurdistan. and Khazakstan so I must be serious

  90. OUR LEADER HAS SPOKEN

Wenger – We must win something every season

    By Matt Fortune

Arsenal simply must end this season with some silverware, according to Arsène Wenger.

Although the Gunners earned plenty of praise for the way they played last term, the Club endured a bout of bad luck that marred the closing stages of the campaign. It meant they ended it empty handed.

The manager is adamant a good start could set the tone for an even brighter season than the last. That means with his hands on the Premier League or Champions League.

“Every season is a season when you have to win something,” said Wenger. “But the difference between winning and losing is very small at the moment.

“For me the two massive trophies are the Premier League and the Champions League. We were close in both competitions [last season]. So let’s go and try again. We want to win things. But had we made 70 points and won the Carling Cup people would have said for me it is not satisfying.

  91. Muppet:
Were you really expecting that the media is gonna be backing us up, telling the world how awesome our squad was despite the injured players?
Kinda expected…..CHeck out this article by goonertalk, he shares the same grienvances.

    http://goonertalk.com/2008/08/17/the-same-old-story-arsenal-in-a-nutshell/

  92. @Solgooner – Ahh.. you mean Junior borat.

The 12 year old superstar from Kazakstan.

  93. YES i TOLD YOU LAST WEEK BORAT WAS HIS UNCLE

  94. NOW THIS IS FUNNY

quote from Ramos on the Spurs website… “Our form wasn’t absolutely ideal but I think in general we are going in the right direction.”

Yes, backwards towards the relegstion zone

  95. @Ateeb – yes. Liverpool and Spurs signings are shrewd and judicious and because they exceed 18M, they are credible and will leap them 4 to 8 places in the premiership by some neat mathematical formula.

Arsenal signings on the other hand are greeted with terms like ‘1 year adjustment to the premiership’, ‘lightweight’, ‘potential’, ‘youngster’, ‘punt’, ‘fledgling’.

  96. Just musing… imagine if we’d bought Anderson to play alongside Cesc. We’d have an unstoppable and incredibly young central midfield. We missed out there. Well played SAF.

  97. “Watching the game, I spotted 2 chances for West Brom, 1 cleared off the line, whilst Arsenal had about 2 clear chances to score, on top of the goal (Walcott, Adebayor).”

I counted like 10 chances for us, and 2 for them. Gallas, Van Persie, Bendtner, Eboue, Adebayor, all of them came close to scoring.

  98. I just forgot to say this to the fans who booed Ade:

    “You’re disgusting” whoever you are.

  99. Crafty Bison,

Yeah well played Sir Alex, you first acknowledged and signed a young talent that we were all in the know about. Him having been dubbed the next Ronaldinho.

He or his execs then negotiated a whopping £18 Million pound deal for the lad and then with all this luxury, he was in a position where that £18 Million pound lad could sit on the bench and get used to the game the easy way.

He is a good player, a big talent, he has adapted thus far, to the physical element of the English game and is yet to display the skills that will make him a star.

We were not about to splash £18 Million on the hottest most-sought after talents around, so well done Arsene for grabbing the likes of Denilson before their fees got away from us and keeping us competitive.

    Gunner4ever,

You’re quite right, Arsenal fans should never be booing our own players.

Well wrong and not at all with the best interests of the club at heart.

    Quit it!

  100. [...] he does keep that level of performance up, as I mentioned yesterday, it will be the rebirth of a Pires-style player in the Arsenal team, something that has been [...]

  101. OK. So how many players fell down in agony whn an opposing player bumped them? How much time was wasted with the theatrics of the “men” who play professional football? I just watched the Brazilian women’s team defeat the German team at the Olympics. It was very physical, but I didn’t see the women rolling around on the ground loking for an Academy Award for acting hurt. They fought through the tackles and if they got knocked down they got up and got on with it. No histrionics. Makes you sick watching the pros falling down from a passing breeze.

  102. Reading back on this, it does remind me of Saturday’s game against Hull. But we then strung together a number of wins after that, so who knows, it could happen again. Fingers crossed for Tuesday’s game against Porto.
