Pre-Season Friendly Fire Re-Commences In The Press

The pre-season got off to a winning start eventually but the key thing was that no-one picked up an injury; the younger players proved what a difference a week extra’s training makes. Arsene said afterwards,

Everybody talks about the players we have lost but we have three to come back. We have injured players – like Robin van Persie and Tomas Rosicky – to come back. We also expect Eduardo to return

No mention of Bacary Sagna who returned yesterday and whose absence was possibly the most crucial in the run-in, requiring a shuffle in the back four. RvP looked fine to me in Euro2008 as far as his fitness went so there is another one; Rosicky apparently will not be back until September according to reports yesterday and as for Eduardo, well, he is back when he is back, hopefully not rushed as Henry and van Persie have been in the past. As for incomings, Arsene commented,

I can’t give you any names of players we will sign but there will be at least one more coming in and maybe more. It may be an experienced player. You can expect more players to come in. We are in the market and if a good enough opportunity comes up then we will take it. I am comfortable that we have thought about this over a long period. We are still very confident that we will challenge for the title next season

That ‘experienced player‘ is Gareth Barry according to the Mail on Sunday without any substance to their comment at all. Arsene believes that there were two or three young players who would be promoted to the first team squad, primarily for Carling Cup and dead rubber Champions League matches. No doubt that there will be some who are more favourites to do so than others. It is hard to say which ones though given that he is effusive in his praise for most when pinned down on individuals; on Jack Wilshere, for example, we are told, ‘I don’t think Jack will stay in the reserves for long‘.

The News of the World in its usual sensationalist style carries the ’story’ that Adebayor will stay if Arsenal raise their offer of £70k per week, the paper carrying out its’ own version of ‘newspaper chicken’, a game we have all witnessed time and time again. Essentially a number of reporters on the same paper create a story and the first one to blink loses. With Adebayor, the story goes he will stay for £100k per week.

There are the usual flaws in this; no-one has matched Arsenal’s valuation as far as anyone is aware; the offer of a new contract is on the table but for the last few weeks, ‘Team Adebayor’ have been telling everyone that it was for £45k per week so a new contract must have been issued given that the story says that the £70k was offered ’some time ago and they’ve never changed their position’.

Quite why the paper and Banal Sports News are so obsessed with his return to training is beyond me. I know they want the sensationalist headlines of ‘Adebay-war’ but only the most intellectually-challenged player would refuse to turn up given the damage it would do to their reputation. To cap it all, apparently the story of Juventus buying RvP next summer that broke two or three weeks ago was not true because it’s a Geoff Sweet ‘Exclusive’ in today’s paper.

Hold on though, according to The Sunday Times if Chelsea stump up £114m for Kaka, Milan will meet Arsenal’s valuation of Adebayor, £11.5m of that will be immediately spent on Roque Santa Cruz, the rest on Barry if Liverpool’s revised cash bid of £16m is not enough to fill Martin O’Neill’s pockets, dotting the ‘i’s’ and crossing the ‘t’s’ of the summer’s transfer talks and putting us in the unenviable position of reading the self-congratulatory tones of all of them for predicting everything correctly.

’til Tomorrow.

  2. Yogi did you miss the latest speculation that PSG and Barcelona are after Gallas? I wondered how we could go through a summer without our French captain being linked elsewhere, it’s tradition after all!

  3. Why are they invested in “Adebaywar”? Because they’ve been reporting it as a done deal for weeks. Even they at some point must feel shame for consistently rpinting so much crap.

  4. Some old pressmen, always talking bowlocks.
They’re all just pissed off that the actual news only ever comes out through the Arsenal Online or TV channel and that they’ve been frozen out. For wuirte a while they’ve been reduced to rehashing stories from the Arsenal magazine or programme with out of context quotes. When they’re not doing that, they’re just calling up the usual suspects in Italy or Spain for rentaquotes. RVP and Adebayor are below FIFA’s randomly generated age of 27 so can’t go anyway. Regarding Gallas, why, when they’re having a clear out of all the dead wood, do Barca want a 32/33 year old defender? Nice try pressmen, but I’m afraid you’ll have to work a little bit harder if you want to appear to be anything other than complete timewasters. But then, plus ca change…

  5. Nice article mate. I think adebayor is not going anywhere even if he leaves thats not a big problem coz van persie can handle it only if he handels his injury firsta and we have eduardo and bendtner. with the amount of chances arsenal create in front of goals any striker with some basic skill can score

  6. Passenal!!

I actually think releasing Gallas and getting a top class defender might be a BLESSING IN DISGUISE. I cannot believe arsenal are “afraid” that a new defender might may bring protest from gallas. I mean, are Arsenal to formulate their plans according to what Gallas thinks??

I say get a new defender (which is an absolute must), and if Gallas is not humble enough to accept the clubs decision, KICK HIM OUT!!

  7. 2 things wrt William Gallas:

Kick him out are you serious ? Name another player who has the burning desire to win that WG displays in the first team he leads from the back and the front. When he was popping up with goals @ Man U no one was complaining. Say what you want about his tantrums but he is a winner and fights to the last.

Gallas dictates to no one people keep forgetting we have Senderos, Djourou and now Harvard and Song all as back up CDs. You may not like it but Wenger has faith in these players so you are going to have to live with it.

Arsene has hinted @ 1 or 2 signings my first guess is the definite signing is Bishoff and the second I don’t know. People may want this established player or that established player but Arsene does not operate like that. IMO I think we are done in the market unless someone leaves.

  8. Isn’t Walcott such a cool guy?

  9. Just read the Walcott interview in the Guardian.

    Such a cool guy:-

  10. Why must it always be a relief to get to Sep 1? All the crap that gets published is not good for the blood pressure.
Having said that , have to confess I enjoyed this one:
From my correspondent in the North East….
Roy Keane went to the Chinese take-away in Tottenham High Road and said “I’ll have numbers 2,5,6 & 15”

  11. Was up in a mountain cabin yesterday, so I didn’t catch anything of the match bar some updates on my cell phone. Ramsey and Wilshere were good, I hear.

  12. Whether people rate Gallas or not is almost irrelevant as we simply cannot afford to lose another player. Personally I think he’s past his best and not great value for his wages which must be 70k/w+.

If we managed to keep other players I would have looked to get rid of Gallas and spend any transfer fees/wages on a top-class replacement.

I say we need a top-class centre back whether Gallas stays or not.

  13. Naga gunner, where do you get the idea that Arsenal are ‘afraid’? Wenger can be ruthless when he wants to be as we have seen with Vieira and Henry. However, I doubt that he would let another experienced first team player leave at this point. Next year though, I wouldn’t be surprised if he left.

  14. Klon!

I was just saying that IF he undermines the club he needs to be removed. I feel that a new centre back is a must and if wenger does get a defender, Gallas must be ready for the competition and sit on the bench if need be, That is all!! I dont necessarily agree with your case about his “burning desire”, he lost the plot towards the end of the season. But lets leave it at that, I guess he is good enough to be given a chance so we’ll see!!

    Passenal!

You have a point, but I have to say we need to strengthen the defence!!

    Alex ice cream!!

“I say we need a top-class centre back whether Gallas stays or not.”

    You are SPOT ON there!!!

  15. And why cant Hleb SHUT UP???

I cant believe the CRAP he is spouting now. I have to say he is now turning into quite a bastard!!

    http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/07/20/Prem-Hleb-on-Fabregas/

  16. Have to agree with you Naga. I was willing to be magnanimous about his departure and wish him the best, but this goes way beyond saying nice things about your new club or kissing their badge in order to be accepted. This is starting the tapping up of our player. What right has he got to be talking on behalf of Cesc Fabregas?

  17. Why do ex-players hate us so much? Always saying bad things about the Arsenal?

  18. Hleb has already kissed the Barca badge more times than he will ever score for them.

    Passenal, Naga,

You’re right he should the f*** up when it comes to Cesc.

Pre-season has started so I hope we can make the signings we need soon. Its better if players can have a pre-season to help them settle – like Sagna last season.

Its much more difficult for a player arriving at midnight on the 31 August to settle

  19. Howard:

“Why do ex-players hate us so much? Always saying bad things about the Arsenal?”

    Who?
Berkcamp? Henry? Pires? Vieira? Petit? Even Anelka?

It’s only losers like Bentley, Larsson, Francis Jeffers, Hleb, etc who bad-mouth the Arsenal.

  20. RVP to Juve now for £15M – ha ha.

I`ll be glad to get to Aug 31st now, it`s getting ridiculous.

  21. I think i’ve lost every ounce of respect I might’ve had for Hleb now. For a player of class and style when the ball’s at his feet, he loses all of it the moment he opens his mouth.

  22. i hope the player arsene is talking about is barry. left footed , good at set pieces ,experienced , can pass and also an option at left back are all the attributes we need . did i mention he’s english :-)
and if there are more coming it would probably be a defender or a replacement for adebayor . i still hope adebayor stays despite all the circus surrounding him. if someone offered 30m + gbp then that would change things though.
i still think this squad has experience (not age ) maybe just lacking one or two in numbers
needless to stay i hope we are not considering selling gallas .love him or hate him . he is a good player and he cares about winning maybe a bit too much :-)

  23. “Hleb has already kissed the Barca badge more times than he will ever score for them.

    Ouch!!

  24. I went to yesterdays Barnet friendly. Why I bothered I dont know. Pointless rubbish and a waste of money. I know its early days, players dont want injuries, not at full fitness etc etc…… But even taking that into account the first half performance from so called professionals and first team regulars was diabolical. None of them could be bothered to take it seriously, just a case of turn up and get it out of the way and sod the paying punters. Also, some of the chants I heard from so called Arsenal fans at the game yesterday were disgusting. I do not go to matches to hear songs about Ashley Cole catching AIDS off Drogba, boasting about taking cocaine as well other pathetic subjects. There were a lot of kids in the ground yesterday and they shouldnt be subjected to sick chants like that. Arsenal supporters normally do things with a style, we do not want that sort of scum fan supporting the club. Go and support Spurs or Chelsea if you feel that way.

  25. Oh dear Kev, sounds like you did not enjoy yourself at all yesterday! I have to agree with you about the chants though. Hopefully they won’t catch on at the Emirates this season.

  26. Hi culturites, can anybody please tell me if AVTO on the Arsenal web site refers to Arsenal TV as well as Arsenal TV online ? Assume this being the case, that all games this season will be broadcast on Arsenal TV.

Also, does anybody know the (UK) cost of Arsenal TV (on satellite) separately to Setanta. I know it costs £12.99 for Setanta and it comes bundled.

    Many Thanks.

  27. Don’t know the answer to your second question Muppet, but the pre-season games are available on both Arsenal TV and Arsenal TV online

  28. ATVO and Arsenal TV are 2 different packages. ATVO cannot show live matches just live commentary.

  29. I don’t think the EPL games will be available on ATVO, but maybe International fans can view them as a repeat on Arsenal TV through ATVO later? That remains to be seen.

All the pre-season games are available live on ATVO, and the repeat of the Barnet game is on Monday at 4:30pm GMT.

International fans who are members of ATVO, can watch the Setanta Arsenal TV Chanel online…they just can’t get it on regular TV sets through Cable or Dish outside the UK.

I don’t know if that helps.

  31. Hleb is a c*** for sure…

But is it only me or someone else also sees that walcott hasn’t improved much since he was brought to arsenal. He has the blitz speed no doubt… but in terms of vision, technique and beating close defenders… he hasn’t gotten very far.

I think the best possible use of him would be to give him the flanks to run and run and run… i don’t think he will be able to make the cut as a striker.

  32. Kev/Passenal,

Agree wholly about fan behaviour. Honestly, since the move to the Emirates I have noticed a downturn in the quality of AFC supporters. The negativity, short-term memories etc. I hope enough gooners make their dissatisfaction with antics known in the coming season. I believe we are fighting for the future and culture of our club.

    whoamI,

I am sad to say that there might be some merit to your observation. However, I think (as with Senderos and Ade) the main problem with Theo is his footballing intelligence. If you saw Arsene’s description of a good footballer during the Cesc Fabregas Show, you’ll recall that the second floor of his house analogy related to footballing intelligence. I hope he is working on this with Theo et al and that we see the benefits of it this season.

  33. Dgob thank you for that… I was thrashed about with that view in one of the other communities.

But I guess Theo now has to learn too much too soon. The only possible context in which I can see him scoring is wrong footed defenders…. and that is possible only if he is allowed space and time on the ball.. with big defenders close to him he just doesn’t know what to do.

For me the best position for him is the right flank without a doubt. I hope Wenger takes the humble pie… keeps eboue out of starting 11 and let theo make a name for himself in the position he is best suited for.

Senderos on the other hand seems to me like a terribly unfortunate guy whose each mistake ends up being a goal. But I still feel if he gets a bit more steel in himself he will turn out to be a marvellous player.
