Arsene On Spending And Shhh, There’s A Football Match Going On

And on the fiftieth day of boredom with transfer rumours, the Lord said, “Let there be a football match to take their minds off such things that divide them”. Actually, had that been true, I am pretty sure the fixture might have been a bit spicier than a pre-season runout at Barnet although if he had a warped sense of humour…I cannot get excited about this afternoon’s match other than it means the season is coming in one month’s time. It will be interesting to see the youngsters and new faces get a runout but anyone who takes it seriously needs to get some therapy.

Anyway, back to the trivia. Arsene has the combination to the safe where the petty cash is held but he is reluctant to use it so the media will tell you. Wenger said,

Of course I am in a position where I can spend the money. But every time we have done such a great job with the young players that you are concerned ‘do we kill a young player or not by bringing another player in?’ It is a very sensitive subject which is not especially linked with money

Therein is the rub for Arsene. He has built a young squad by Premier League terms and one that challenged for the title for the first time since 2004-05. However, he is in a position where he has talent to use but needs to balance it against experience. One of those who has made the transition is Cesc Fabregas who should be held as an example. He had the luxury of the 2003-04 season to establish himself in the squad, plenty of experience around him. That, so we are told, is the difference between then and now.

Yet if you look at the squad, there is enough experience around. There is a European Champion; Premier League title winners; Champions League runners-up; regular internationals. There is experience so it is time for this myth to be expunged from the record. If nothing else, most have the bitter experience of the Premier League last season and the Champions League exits. They know what they have to do to win titles so the question then becomes do they have the talent. In abundance is the answer.

Arsene identified one of the changes that they need to make,

We were very close, we were in the race and next year we want to show we can win it. The team is performing well, but the target of a top-level sportsman is to always improve and I believe we can be more clinical, we can score more with the chances we create

That is true to an extent. In the run-in last season there a number of games where chances were squandered – not just by Adebayor either – and that needs to be rectified. Equally though, the team need to get into the habit of clean sheets.

Last season saw a progression in Arsene’s Theory Of Attacking Football in that everyone was encouraged to push higher up the field. There were occasions though when the centre of the defence went to sleep. Gallas and Toure are capable defenders and should be able to deal with such moments but they did not. It does not mean that they cannot play together, merely that they have to concentrate on the task at hand, protecting leads such as those at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge or the position in the second leg of the Champions League. It is not just Gallas and Toure who were responsible; the whole team need to concentrate – Anfield showed that – and defending as a unit might well have been high on Arsene’s pre-season training schedule. If they are able to strike that balance then the sky is the limit.

The final piece of his jigsaw,

There is a lot of talk in the press, but we have always managed at this club by balancing the budget. We should not be criticised for that and should be respected for that

There you go Arsene ruining the media’s fun and not understanding that in this Championship Manager era, spending money sells papers. Especially since they are all raiding the club magazine for stories at the moment but that’s for another day.

Finally, the worst pre-season review has been written. Anything that says ‘The departures of Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb to AC Milan and Barcelona respectively leaves Arsene Wenger with a midfield lacking creativity and guile‘ cannot be taken seriously. I am sure that the author will tell you it is all ‘post-modernistic ironic humour’ but that would be a fib – it’s guff. And funny as well in a post-modernistic ironic humour sort of way.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Great blog today, well done

  2. 1’st foot !!!

  3. dang life’s a bitch

  4. Hey Yogi, the game with Barnet is not going to be worse than anything happened this summer :)

I know what you mean by taking it serious though, some people may come out surprised after the game that Vela didn’t score 25 goals all with his left little toe or something like that.

  5. I don’t think I’ll even bother reading that pre-season review – you’ve probably told me all I need to know! Flamini is replaceable and Hleb as talented as he was also contributed to that lack of clinical finishing in front of goal for all his dribbling, passing and ball retention. His departure may be a blessing in disguise and perhaps we can be more penetrating and show more willingness to shoot when opportunities arise.

I’m sure Wenger will use the early pre-season matches to see how the team performs and to decide which of the many targets he has on his radar to go for.

  6. Thanks for the link YW gave me a real chuckle, I love to start the day with a laugh. I also love it when we are written of pre season. Just like last year and look how good we were, it was a fantastic season and a couple of injuries less would have seen us win the title by a mile.

  7. Cesc didn’t establish himself during the 2003-04 season (that was his “youth football” season with Arsenal. You’re thinking about the 2004-05 season.

  8. I posted this in yesterdays comment a moment ago, so I hope no-one minds if I repeat it here:

On the Song topic, I think Song is actually the best body for replacing Flamini.

He’s got size (just over 6′), strength, speed (yes, ignore his running style, just watch how long it takes for him to get from point A to point B), tackling, passing, creativity etc.

I think AW has played it down to give Diaby and possibly also Denilson, some light to work towards.

Diaby was played on the left to give him some defensive duties, time in the team, and also to work on his left foot.

I think Song has probably been encouraged to go to the Olympics. It’s excellent big game experience for him, and should help bring him on for the season.

I do take the point about the lack of what I might refer to as “obvious” experience in CM, but we do have a fair number of bodies there.

I cannot see Diaby, Denilson, Song, Djourou et al all failing dismally there, so maybe it’s time to take a slightly different angle on it?

Maybe it’s more a case of numbers rather than age?

We do have backups for Cesc.

Rosicky, Nasri, Denilson, Song and Diaby can all play a creative role as well, just as few seem to value Cesc’s defensive contribution.

Last season I thought that a large part of the so-called “lack of depth” was more down to the fact that AW had not rotated the team adequately by the time the injuries hit.

That said, it was understandable, given that changing a winning team is not always considered the best action.

I also think the Diarra situation is being misread a touch.

At the start of the season, AW and Flamini would have sat down and discussed his position and options.

AW will have promised to give him a go, and then look at an extension based on that.

Diarra was bought as a bargain and possible backup/competition.

By the time it became an issue that Flamini might not sign (December), Diarra had already shown his colours as a problem child.

At that stage, no matter how many reservations AW might have had about Flamini signing an extension, he couldn’t keep or play Diarra anyway.

It was a lose/lose situation. Hindsight vision is always 20/20, but I think that by December, the die was already cast.

It would never have been an option to retain Diarra by then, and even putting him in the team ahead of Flamini would probably have caused major problems.

Besides, on the occasions we did see him, yes, he was VERY strong on the ball, but his passing was definitely not up to scratch.

However, I do think AW should have looked to rotate some of the other youngsters in in some of the less hectic games at that point.

He did start doing it with Song at CB in the latter stages of the season, but he should probably have done more of that from earlier in the season as well, and also in place of Flamini by then.

I’m extremely excited about this next season, even if I am a little nervous.

And I don’t really care if we don’t make any more signings, in fact I certainly don’t want any in CM, because I want to see who steps up.

Nor do I care if we don’t win any trophies, as long as we do similar to last season, and mount a serious challenge, that’s all I ask.

  9. Why is it always “post-modernistic ironic humour”? Why is it never “dialectic materialist humour”?

  10. GK: Almunia, Fabianski, Mannone
    RB: Sagna, Hoyte
    CB1: Toure, Senderos, Song
    CB2: Gallas, Djourou, Nordtveit
    LB: Clichy, Traore
RM: Nasri, Eboue, Walcott, Ramsey, Barazite
DM: Song, Ramsey, Djourou, Lansbury, Coquelin
    CM: Fabregas, Diaby, Denilson, Merida
    LM: Rosicky, Traore, Ramsey, Gibbs
    SS: Nasri, Barazite, Wilshere
FW1: Van Persie, Bendtner, Walcott, Simpson
    FW2: Adebayor, Eduardo, Vela

Forget midfield, what i’m wondering is where’s our cover for fullback? Can’t expect Sagna and Clichy to give it 100% year in year out in every game. Do Hoyte and Traore fill you with confidence? Maybe in the Carling Cup, but not if you were down to the wire, playing against another one of the big four with the PL title within your reach.

  11. On the right we certainly don’t have a problem, we’ve got Eboue, Hoyte and even Kolo.

On the left we’ve got Traore, Gallas and Hoyte.

We also need to remember that a season or so ago we reached the UCL final having found 9 different left backs to play for us during that season!

  12. Eboue can also cover right back as can Kolo and Djourou. Gallas can play left back, Hoyte has also played left back. For all we know Justin Hoyte could make a big step up this season. I’m willing to wait and see how pre-season pans out because all these players will play at some point over the next month. Then it’s up to Arsene to make any moves he deems necessary whatever we might think.

  13. All good sides have a solid spine – GK,CB,CM and CF. Arsenal have Adebayor ( who wanted to leave but now has no buyer left), Fabregas plus ? , Gallas (past his best and even slower than last season – lacking ariel power which will cost us again) plus Toure( not the ideal partner for Gallas and again lacking ariel power) and Almunia (average and not reallt top class). The back-ups are Bendtner (still learning), young very inexperienced midfield players, Sendoros,Song and Djourou( not the top CH players required) and a Polish keeper who looked dreadful in the Spurs game. Cannot see that we will win anything next season!

  14. Wenger has told Eboue that he has absolutely no plans of playing him at right-back again, he sees him now as a midfielder and a midfielder only. When we were down to the wire near the end of last season, Wenger played Toure at right-back instead of Eboue, remember. It didn’t work out great to say the least.

I wasn’t aware Djourou can play at RB though, interesting. You have a point about Hoyte, aswell. Maybe next season will be his big breakthrough that no one saw coming.

  15. Blackstock,

“Forget midfield, what i’m wondering is where’s our cover for fullback?”

I agree that we cannot expect Sagna and Clichy to play all league+CL matches. However, we need backup to these two, not those who’ll replace them. We cannot therefore expect a big name signing (I’m not saying you’re demanding that), as their place will be limited. Hence we may need to find a solution within the existing team. For me, Eboue is a decent rightback to cover for Sagna (any other position, No No No). I’m not sure about Clichy’s cover – maybe a reserve player to be drafted into?

  16. Clichy’s cover will continue to be TRaore – who has an exocet missile of a left boot and is one of the best athletes at the club. He will grow as a defender. We also have the brazilian Pedro Roberto Silva Botelho , ho was on loan to salamnca last year. He ‘ll come through in the next year or two.

Right back is a problem though – Id rather see Eboue there than Kolo after what happened last year. I fear we need to be realistic about Justin Hoyte – if he hasn’t come through as a top quality full back yet, he probably never will.

  17. “we need backup to these two, not those who’ll replace them.”

That was exactly my point. I don’t want to see them replaced, I just think we need better cover.

Look at the gap in quality between Sagna and Hoyte, Clichy and Traore. Don’t get me wrong, I do like Hoyte and Traore, they are clearly both talented players with lots of potential. But when compared, Sagna and Clichy are in completely different leagues of class to them right now. I agree that realistically, Eboue would be the best cover for Sagna, but as I said, Wenger has been quoted as saying he has NO plans of ever using Eboue as a right-back again, he told this to Eboue personally and it was printed in the official Arsenal Magazine a month or two ago.

Look at the competition we have for most other areas and it’s insane the amount of talent all competing for one spot. At right-back and left-back though, you basically have two unproven fringe-players who know that they’re automatically guaranteed to step in whenever Sagna or Clichy get injured. It would be typically Wenger-esque though, if Hoyte and Traore were to both prove me completely wrong by showing incredible progress next season, and I wouldn’t bet against it. But it’s a big gamble, just remember how out of their depth these players looked when up against Man U in the FA cup last season, they got absolutely ripped to shreds if I recall correctly. Perhaps even bringing one or two more players of EQUAL quality to them, to snap at their heels a bit, would help them progress quicker.

  18. “We also have the brazilian Pedro Roberto Silva Botelho , ho was on loan to salamnca last year. He ‘ll come through in the next year or two.”

Looks like a real class player, I agree. He’ll be staying on loan for another year though, which is probably a good thing for his development. When he eventually comes to England, I imagine he’ll need 3 to 5 months to fully adapt. So right now i’d say whilst Pedro is a good prospect for us, he’s also a very long-term one.

  19. He must be the most stubborn manager ever. Now it is bad luck that kept us from getting silverware.Sometimes he can be a real dickhead. If he keeps deluding himself like that it is no wonder he choose Alex Song to deputise in central defence.

  20. Blackstock I agree that Hoyte and Traore had a torrid time in those 2 games last season, but they have also played well as back ups at other times. Traore was excellent in the season we got to the CC final. They will not improve without playing and the risk we take is that they will have nightmare games like that. However, it was not just those two the whole team did not appear to be up for it and therefore did not cover and help them out as you would normally expect. Hopefully Arsene won’t make that mistake again as those defeats were painful and humiliating. Although the players would have learned a lot more from it than from an easy passage.

  21. Danish gooner you should not go by the spin given in the media. If you go to the source of that story you will find that Arsene was asked whether it was his unluckiest season to which he replied yes, given the level of injuries and key decisions going against us. I cannot argue with that because if you look at the seasons we won trophies, we were very fortunate that the key players mostly stayed fit and I would also say that without a few calls going our way in 03/04 we would not have had the unbeaten season.

  22. Nicely pointed out, about the lack of full backs. Although i thin Traore is good enough, but Hoyte has been utterly dissapointing. Lets just hope Wenger is willing to play eboue as back up right back then im calm. The possible reasons he didnt play him there last season when sangna was injured was because we didnt have anyone who could fill in the right midfield last year, due to injuries e.t.c. I see no other reason not to play eboue there.

  23. Great piece of analysis mate. keep up the good work

  24. Good stuff, YW.

I basically agree with Mike, but would like to see a good solid, Grimandi, type pro brought in, who could cover DM & across the back.

That would allow not prevent playing time for the more talented but less experienced players we hope to bring through. Grimandi was often used for 10-20 minutes to close out a game & rest a player. Barry would be ideal but is too expensive & would expect to play.

As for cover for the full backs, I am sure that Hoyte will be ok given a run of games to build confidence. The same goes for Traore, who is clearly talented but still very young. We also have other players, who could be moved if necessary.

There has been a lot of talk about us being weak in the air, at the back, & to some extent that is true but I cannot recall us conceding any more goals than our rivals from headers. Kolo & Gallas were very impressive until the ACN. Our problems started when Kolo came back with the groin injury & patently wasn’t himself for the remainder of the season.

This was compounded by losing Sagna, who is excellent in the air, just before Chelsea’s 3 offside goal, & thereafter.

  25. Can someone please tell me why whenever Arsenal are mentioned in the media the huge, enormous, colossal, immense debt we have is part of the story and the debts Man U and Liverpool have are ignored. The fact is that those clubs have higher rates of debt than we do and ours is better structured. Also the small fact that ours is for a new state of the art stadium that has increased revenues and the debts of the other clubs is to finance a buyout is forgotten. The story in the week about our season ticket price increase was major bad news and another example of how bad the situation we are in is. The fact that Man U’s tickets have increased by about 50% in 3 years (Not including this year) is ignored.

I’m sorry about the rant but this is really beginning to piss me off, if only because it encourages fans (Of all clubs) to scream that there club should be charging into huge debt. Has no one learnt from the Leeds situation.

  26. Passenal,

Agreed that luck played a part but we made basic defensive mistakes when it mattered against Chelsea and Manu in the League and Drivelpoo in the CL which was not down to luck. We had enough of the game at Anfield to have progressed comfortably even with that Kop penalty.

Sagna’s injury was the catalyst for our defensive collapse compounded by Toure’s loss of form and being played out of position. Sagna was an injury waiting to happen. His first season and he had played virtually with no rest throughout over twice a week. Wenger couldn’t rest him as the back-ups were significantly inferior.

The team looked jaded towards the end as a lack of rotation slowly began to drian them physically. Wenger couldn’t rotate as he didn’t have the squad. I believe that this cost us more than luck and even the refs. If we had been able to mantain our standards for a bit longer we would have had a great chance in both Prem and CL but we didn’t have the squad. Its not that we didn’t have quality players but a lack of overall quality or even readiness throughout the squad.

Players have left the club and some of those that remain have big gaps to fill. A few players will have to step up and signings made to avoid a repeat of last year’s collapse.

  27. Blackstock
I don’t think Wenger played Toure at RB because he considers Eboue as a RM. Wenger wanted to field Senderos at all cost so he pushed Toure there to allow Senderos to play as CB. If he had played Toure and Gallas at CB, dropped Senderos, played Eboue as RB and moved Theo in front of him, we would’ve won the POOL game.

As is obvious, Wenger is so strung to Senderos that despite his seasonal ‘huge’ mistakes in the big games he’ll sacrifice Arsenal to use him at all cost. Senderos is the main reason he’s not buying a CB and may be the reason we might fail this comig season once more.

  28. Though I would ideally want us to sign a DM, if arsene makes no additions I would really like to see Ramsey and Lansbury BEHIND Song for that spot!! Arsene has been talking about Ramsey and though it may not be too significant, the fact that Ramsey got the Flamini number gives me hope that he will play a bigger part in this season than most people might believe!!

But regarding a new centre back I think it is an ABSOLUTE MUST, if we are to win anything next season!!

    Cheers all!!

  29. Alex, I’m not saying it was just down to luck, but when things keep going against you and confidence is low it was hard for the players to keep going. Also, I would hardly call our end to the season a ‘collapse’ there were just a few key moments when we lost concentration and let games we had controlled slip away from us. As Arsene said that was naive and showed a lack of experience. The players will have learned from it though.

  30. Howard,

I must admit to having defended Senderos over the years but the fact is that his development had hit reverse. The 2005 Senderos is better than the current one. I still think he will make a decent player once he eliminates the mistakes from his game but after Anfield, I said no more. We can’t afford to wait for him to improve enough or afford to gamble as he may never be good enough.

Toure/Gallas is not the answer. Gallas is past his best and as gunner90 says getting slower all the time. The two of them are too small and lack aerial power and physical strength. The lack of physicality in midfield just compounds the problem.

We need a new big, tall, fast, centreback with top-flight experience. CL experience would be a bonus.

Senderos has been there since 2003 so he cannot say that he has not had the chances. Maybe keep him as 4th choice as he may do a Flamini but he needs to be playing regularly.

  31. Passenal,

4 points from 5 games was our worst run in the league for 9 seasons. After being league leaders for months, this is about as big a collapse as you can have.

  32. Roll on August – I’m really missing my weekly fix. Our young stars will really shine this season.

  33. Not buying a top finisher will be a big mistake for next season.
We are all blaming our defending, but I blame our poor finishing; because it has often contributed to our poor defending, as this helps our rivals to raise their belief and fight back more, specially in our games, Manu v Arsenal and Liverpool v Arsenal.
For the holding midfield position, these following players can do it in this order:

    1. Song.
    2. Eboue.
    3. Denilson(I expect him to be ready in 2009/10).
    4. Nasri(with Alonso approach).

I want AW to try Diaby as a striker if Ade leaves, but buying an improved striker is what we need right now, because I really don’t rate Bentner from what I saw on him last season (he can’t hold on the ball like Ade does).

I think AW is reluctant to brink in another CB, because he wants to pair Gallas with Senderos, giving the later his last chance to prove that he has a future at Arsenal when seing Gallas’s contract run out. Kolo, Sagna and Hoyte will occupy the RB. I am ok with AW doing that, because Gallas/Kolo combination at CB doesn’t really work.

  34. IC,

I disagree with you on that. We are ok going forward, its the DEFENCE that is the problem. We only failed to score in 2 games in the league last season and we got 2 points out of them games. No the defence is the main problem because of which we couldnt capitalise on what the strikers did. 2 clean sheets among the games we drew and we would have been champions!!

    Alex ice cream!!

I agree with you, sticking with senderos is dicing with death!!! he should be 4TH CHOICE, if he stays at arsenal!!

  35. I don’t really see a need for us to go out and buy any new players.

You can hardly call our current crop of youngsters ‘inexperienced’ when they finished 4 points behind Man United.

The losss of Flamini and Hleb is disappointing but I am more than confident that their internal replacements will ’step up’ and exceed them.

I do not believe that Arsene will sign any more players between now and the new season. At a push, he might purchase 1, but otherwise he has his squad and we are ready to push on this season.

On the senderos issue -I can’t believe the amount of criticism he gets. He is an excellent defender. He is guilty of key mistakes but so too are Gallas, Toure, Clichy, Ade, and Flamini. I think people like to pick on him because his head is shaped like an egg and he reads Dostoevsky. :)

It’s a team effort and we are ready to push on this season.

I can see an unbeaten run coming. Are you ready for it?

    Lets get excited.

  36. I don’t think our defending has got any better from our fantastic run in 2006 CL. Lehman’s was the difference between that period and last year.
AW has never been a good defensive coach and we can only win trophies if we improve more our striking force (scoring as many goals as we can)rather then the later.

  37. Watch and download the goals from the barnet v arsenal friendly match here

    srohit.blogspot.com/2008/07/barnet-v-arsenal-19th-july-friendly.html

  38. interesting conversation. i tend to agree that our substitute-backs are a major weakness in the squad and that a good utility defender would be a big help.

Last year i got to go to sevilla to watch our boys get their asses whipped. i wasn’t too concerned since it was a squad with 8 or 9 backups, playing in a tough stadium, and we had already qualified. but one whinny, slightly drunk guy who almost walked under a bus on the way back to town was really upset. this game, he said, proved that we weren’t good enough because our second team wasn’t good enough. i thought it was ridiculous — when would we have 8 second-teamers on the pitch at the same time? Anyhow, I think he was right. Traore, who looked great the year before, was continually exploited at LB while Hoyte looked completely lost at RB in several other cames — CC vs Spurs, FL vs Man U, etc. With Flamini out, Senderos looked very exposed as well and the pressure led to hit typical mistakes. In other words, the whiny drunk was right.

As for DM, I agree that we have a lot of options. fingers crossed that they work out as well as Flamini did. I agree with Mike that Diarra wasn’t as good in reality as he is in people’s minds. It was a coup to get him, but he always looked out-of-sync with the team on the field. He was good in scrappy games, but otherwise he seemed to disrupt the flow of the team. And for those who think we are too short, i can’t see how he helped that!

  39. lc, our defending in the CL run was brilliant. how could it get better? that was because we devised a system to cope with the rag-tag back line and the players bought into it. we were defending with 10 men (or 9, since th14 never was part of that). Reyes and Hleb were brilliant helping out on the sides. Players like Eboue, who often lose concentration, were completely focused. I think it helped that we were playing RM and Juventus. That opposition meant that that team really bought into the defend-as-a-unit philosophy, with Cesc, Reyes and Pires orchestrating our rapid counterattack.

  40. No, Lehman was great, not our defending. Remember, how often Senderos was miskicking the ball in our area and we’ve got away with as the result of Lehman’s excellent performance!
We were completely dominated in both legs Real/Arsenal; but we came out winner. Also against Villarreal, it was pure luck, as the number of saves Lehman has made including saving a crutial penalty in the last five minutes of the game.
I know what I am talking about ,Gooner.

  41. California,

I have made similar points before. The gulf in class between some of the first team and their back-ups is huge. This is most obvious in defence especially at fullback and now that Mad Jens has gone at GK as well. I am not convinced by the Toure/Gallas partnership and I am one of those who feels that Gallas is declining. There a too many question marks over Sederos and Djourou. I think that Song is in AW’s mind as the long-term replacement for Toure. We still need that big beast at the back.

  42. IC,

The only game that we were totally outplayed that you mention was Villareal away where we were awful and were rescued by Mad Jens playing the best football of his career.

Madrid away- totally dominated? I am not sure where you got this idea from. It was a fully deserved win and it should’ve been more as we spurned 3 chances in the first 10mins. Madrid at home was a tight game but I agree that we were saved by Mad Jens’ miraculous double save from Raul. Villareal at home we were the better team by far and only an incorrect offside prevented us from winning by a greater margin.

  43. Pretty poor performance first half against Barnet, the only positive being Ramsey who looked very lively and comfortable on the ball, looks a player and i can see him playing a fair bit of the coming season.
Theo and Nic up front looked really rusty and quite frankly were awful.
However second half Arsene obviously made a load of changes and demanded the tempo being upped and things started to improve with Wilshire and Simpson the stand out performers
In the end we deserved to win but not as easy as it should have been.
On a positive note Arsene said post match he was in the market to buy players but would not commit to how many.
We will just have to wait and see.

  44. Alex. I agree with you re: Gallas. I thought he was one of the best defenders in the world a few years ago with Chelsea. But I think he has slowed down a step. With France he looked pretty average, and at times last year attackers got in behind him.

However, what the great defending during the CL run showed me os that organization, effort and concentration are probably more important than simply who is playing, as long as the players are of a certain level. Again, in 2006, the squads ‘weakness’ became its strength because it motivated the squad to focus and work hard.

  45. First of all, I know I cannot put too much thought into today’s match. Nobody had a good game, except for a very few.

However, after seeing today’s match against the mighty Barnet, I’ve changed my mind about Egobayor.

My heart still shouts to him to **** off wherever he belongs, but my head says we should keep him this season as Bentner is nowhere near ready and TW14 is still the super-sub to torture the tired opposition legs.

But the future is certainly very very promising. Hope all the boys live up to the expections and realize their full potential.

  46. Ah the lack of enthusiasm is disappointing. Every one wants to find a fault to worry over.

Isn’t it enough that the media do that already to sell newspaper advertising?

  47. Just been browsing some other sites.
There really are some complete idiots out there calling themselves gooners and spouting the most intense rabid vitriol against their OWN club. It completely beggars belief. please keep up the good work YW as this site is a bastion of balanced well informed, well argued debate.

That was the Barnet game. which we drew nil-nil last year.
Ramsey and jack looked special. most of the first halfers looked still on holiday. too much supermodel action on yachts must be tiring…..
they will improve and I’m looking foward to progress after stutgart.

    peace.

  48. wtf – woke up in the 2nd half and a bunch of the youth team players were on the pitch

saw highlights of the 1st team and they were all ****
    we need signings NOW

experienced world class players, cos if it goes on like this, club is going to dogs

spurs have signed quality, we have signed ****

i’ve been watchin football all of my life (13 yrs) and i can see we need a CB, CM, striker and quality keeper

wenger needs to go, he is an accountant rather than a football manager

the board needs to go, they dont know squat bout football

    we’re gonna be relegated

you heard wenger on the radio, he said he was gonna back signings… he knows we are talking… but he just wants to make us shut up for a while, he got no intention of makin any

the kids didnt cut it.. surely he saw it

i talk shit… sorry.. Wenger talks shit

we need more experience in the squad

the squad is just a bunch of wannabes

    we need world class players

distinctly average performance today against shite opposition

    it was shite

    people want answers

  49. Arsene didn’t tell us anything particularly new in his post match comments today, regarding his transfer intentions.

As usual when it comes to the transfer window, the golden rule with Arsene is to pay attention to what he actually does, as opposed to what he says.

Arsene’s a master at throwing people off the scent of what he’s really up to, enabling him to work under the radar.

Although he confirmed that Adebayor will return to training on Monday 21st July & pointed out that he’ll start the season at Arsenal as he’s under contract, there was something about the way he said it that left room for doubt about whether Adebayor will still be at the club on the 1st September 2008.

We’ll have to wait & see.

  50. Claptongoon – I know, it beggars belief. A week of training, the first friendly of the season, half a squad – and hypotheses (mostly doom and gloom) are being made all over the place. It’s insane I tells ya!

The Barnet game wasn’t nil-nil last year, but the truth is it doesn’t matter one little bit.

Funnily enough, Manure were unable to beat Kaizer Chiefs today, but nobody’s predicting a riot over that one.

  51. Big Al, in Man U’s case, everyone will sensibly remeber that it was a friendly and their first match in a long while!

  52. Its obvious that Ramsay is the best deputy to Fabregas and not Denilson who seems to be going backwards, ‘the Senderos affliction’

I now understands why Arsene worked hard for him; he’s a first team player, fast, close ball control, good passer, good tackler. He’ll definitely play some EPL games this season.

He’s the guy who can afford some rest for Fab4.

  53. while todays first half was average it’s not really important. lots of players have been training hard all week. that means they have been working on their fitness and not focussing on winning this game and being fresh for Barnet. Playing 45 minutes is just about re-sharpening the mind for matches once more. the fact that the players lost the first half may actually have a positive affect on them. they must learn that its not a case of turn up and win, but every game is tough.

second half you saw a proper team, despite their age. they were focussed, played as a team and wanted to win. barnet were not really in the second half. they looked tired having chased us about and they were playing uphill. In the end we could have scored another goal or two.

Changing the subject…my worry for ages has been the centre back situation. I am still really concerned about Gallas. I am OK with Toure but Gallas is my worry. I think he is on a downward curve.
I beleive you cannot gamble with the centre back position, but I feel thats exactly what we are about to do. I cant see wenger replacing Gallas. Gallas’ ego is too big to have somone compete for his place – he’d have to leave but it wont happen.
The midfield position I think is easier to ‘gamble’ with. I think we can cover it, and if a player does fairly well, as long as the other 10 players in the team are doing really well, then I think we can still win something come May. that is not the case with the centre back positions. wenger has to realise there is a weakness there. Until he makes that realisation then we have no chance. I cant bear another season of missing out for this reason. this was the main reason we lost out last season, but I dont think wenger sees it like that.

  54. @ Muppet
    lol lol

  55. Apparently Wenger said, “We had two departures but two players came in so, number wise, we are level.” I fear for his mathematics. Hleb + Flamini + Gilberto makes three out…

  56. I agree gazzup. We have had a problem at the back for a while although the cover from midfield is sometimes inadequate. We need an new CB, its obvious.

  57. Crafty Bison, Gilberto was not 1st team. Wenger was talking about the 1st team players.

  58. Summary of our transfers this summer:-

    Out
Gilberto -Gentleman & formerly excellent player.
    Hleb -Excellent feet.
Flamini -Lots of running and tackling
That Mad German Bloke -Good with his hands but not so good with his temper.

    In
Gordon Ramsey -Excellent ball playing chef.
Nasri -The next Zidane who is good enough to be substituted as a substitute.

    Possible Innies-
Gareth Barry -Overvalued, Overpriced and Over there but a reasonable player.
Alonso -Formerly excellent Spanish player. Still quite good.
Alligator -the best thing to come out of Florida since Wild Things -take note Daniel Levy.

    Possible Outties
Ade the Impaler -So far offside could be playing for the opposition.
    Thierry Henry -Oh wait!
Every one else is going to Barcalona.

  59. We don’t need new players. We have young kids to come in and take their place. As Gary once said, “in kids we trust.”

    Chortle. Snort. So funny.

  60. Arse Freud i totally agree with the confidence you have that our young players can fill the void left by departing experienced players.
We are blessed with some of the best highly skilled youngsters in the world, but i still think you need that balance of experience and youth to challenge for the EPL and CL.
In my own opinion we need some experience to come in to make up for what we have just lost.
One or perhaps two is all we need but i have the utmost faith in Arsene to make the right decision.

  61. all of you need to shut up . have you even given any of the young players a chance
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
