Chairman Pete Speaks

Peter Hill-Wood has been speaking to the Daily Telegraph, following on from the weekend’s Arsene comments in the News Of The World, specifically about Adebayor and Hleb.

Of Adebayor, he said

We want him to stay, definitely. Adebayor still has a long time [three years] left on his contract, and we have absolutely no intention of releasing him from that contract. You want to keep your best players and Adebayor is one of those

From a footballing point of view, it would be good for the team were he to stay. Despite the personnel issues he might bring, next season ought to see some improvement to his game on last especially as he will (hopefully) be under pressure from a fully-fit Eduardo and Robin van Persie. Last term, due to injuries, Adebayor was relied upon too much at times for goals. If Arsene can have a fit forward line to choose from, the dependency shown in the latter stages of the season could be eradicated. Once more though it will be up to the midfield to contribute more goals than they have for the last few years.

Hill-Wood reinforced Arsene’s view that the number of football mercenaries is increasing

I’m afraid that’s the way of the world. It’s annoying, but it is modern football. The idea that you are going to have a number of your team playing for you for 15 years, as one used to have, has disappeared.

The situation with Adebayor is nothing new in terms of players wanting to leave with seemingly substantial amounts of time on their contracts remaining; it is the sport itself that is unique in how it handles transfers and registrations. It seems that this anachronism is heading for a Bosman-style challenge in the not-too-distant future except this time, instead of two minor European clubs, it will probably involve one of the bigger clubs such is their voracious appetite for having the star players wear their shirts.

Despite its protestations, football is not a unique industry in itself other than to charge new employers a fee for securing their employees services. With European policitians and bureaucrats intent on harmonising the law to level the playing field for all workers, they may well target transfer fees in their next foray into the footballing world. Other than perpetuation of the system, there is no real rationale for keeping these fees. To some extent, there is an argument for allowing the retention of the formulaic system applied to young players, required to ensure that the Academy system flourishes rather than dying on it’s feet. For older players? Football puts no more effort into training them skills-wise than other industries so why the fees?

Back to PHW and Arsenal. He appears to have given up hope for Alexander Hleb though, at a time when his Agent has decided to follow The Four Seasons advice and believe that “Silence is Golden”,

Hleb has made it clear he wants to go. I think maybe he will go

A pity for Hleb that the initial interest in him has, publicly at least, been subdued by the Adebayor headlines. One for the Adebayor-bashers though,

According to Arsenal sources, Wenger feels Adebayor became increasingly big-headed following his run of success last season, and the manager worried that the striker could become a disruptive influence in the dressing room. There is also concern within the club about the 24-year-old’s footballing intelligence, after he was flagged for offside more than any other player in the Premier League last season

Away from that, a major surprise in the top fifty with Pat Jennings coming in at Number Ten. There’s a political joke in there somewhere but alas time precludes its inclusion.

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. Purely on talent Pat Jennings was Arsenals greatest keeper and probably the greatest keeper of all time.

  2. It is true that Adebayor’s (or his agents) words have not been great, but it is clear he has been trying to engineer a better contract, not a move away from the club.

Now we can all argue about the merits of how it has been sought, but we already know the business morals of football agents.

Removing the emotion from the situation, my question would be how does selling Adebayor benefit the squad / team?

    In my opinion, it doesn’t.

And lets face it, as soon as Adebayor starts scoring goals for us next season, it will be easier to remember the summer as the usual fun and games.

  3. There’s no doubting Ade’s lack of football intelligence. I remember Newcastle away last season he and Rosicky have a 2 on 1 situation, Ade ran 5 yards off side and then complained that the pass never came. It was embarrasing to watch.

  4. Still no clarification of Wengerspin NOTW interview, it doesnt make sense, we sold Viera, Henry, Lundberg when they were past their best, and Bentley, Muamba, Larson, Connoly, because the couldnt get in the first team we bought, Walcott, Sagna, Eduardo, Diably, Denilson, Adebayor, Nordvelt, Vela, in the same period so HOW CAN BE A SELLING CLUB?

  5. At last the facts that EGO has no inteligence is being questioned, the failure to pass to Bentdner, and the numerous offsides were on of the reasons we didnt win the title, its no good blaming the defense alone, he scored some good goals but missed some sitters, and his offside staistics are unbelevable

  6. you do realise that if Ade stays, every time he misses a chance, or is flagged offside, the crowd will all mutter at once, ‘Christ, we could have got £30m for him in the summer.’
Thats why he should go. he will no longer ever be given the benefit of the doubt by Arsenal fans again. those who protected him before as being one of ours, will no longer do so. he will be exposed and the pressure on him to deliver more than what he can realisitcally deliver will be too big for him to handle. All players need that feeling of being wanted – the fans sang his name every game last season. He will lose that for sure. He must go.
Conversely, if we sell him and we fail to win any trophies I honestly dont beleive fans will have a go at wenger for that. people have seen how much Ade wants out and what kind of person he is. even if it damages the club, I am sure people wont complain about letting him go.

I dont like player power any more than the average fan, but I do beleive that every time a player says he does not want to play for a club again, then he should be sold, regardless of whether that makes him the 4th player to do so in one summer. this is modern football, we have to deal with that. We are Arsenal, players should be proud to play for us and many of them are.

  7. YW Good one

Matt – he better be kissing that badge extra hard but if he scores another 30 goals on top of 15 assist I may and I state emphatically maybe I may forgive him for his comparison with TH 14. Because another season of 30 goals will bring him closer to TH 14 feat for us.

For now he should shut up and work hard to justify his worthiness of wearing the Red and white. And I will not be cheering nor will I be jeering him if he is wearing the Arsenal shirt.

    Up The Arse!!!

  8. Nobody will be booing Adebayor, ive never known an Arsenal player to be treated badly by the fans??

Besides he only wants a new contract, he loves playing for Arsenal but if you knew that you could earn 3 times as much elsewhere then you will start to feel a bit used also. Yes he has let his personal succeess of this season go to his head, but he hasnt done it all by himself, and its only 1 season. I agree that he should be earning alot more than what he is, but the way he has gone about it was not smart at all. But when has he ever been that smart with Offside statistics as bad as his?

Ade staying is a good thing. Hleb though, is not enjoying the Premiership and it shows, gd luck to him.

  9. If Adebayor does end up staying at Arsenal for the time being – presumably with a new & improved contract – then I hope the terms of any deal include:

    - him learning the rules & regulations of football
from a top referee, in particular the offside rule
    & it’s varying interpretations.

    - a complete ban on him kissing his badge &
declaring his ‘love’ for all things Arsenal.

    - a complete ban on him (& his agent) giving
interviews to the press & broadcasing media.
Any communications from him are to be relayed
    via our official site.

    - him spending more time on improving his
overall game, as opposed to working out new
dance routines to celebrate goals scored (ditto
    for Eboue).

  10. Gazzap unfortunately Laporta won his vote of confidence at Barcelona so maybe he wont give 30 million for EGO and we are stuck with him, at least Hleb will be allowed to get away from noisy crime ridden Hampstead

  11. well I would not mind Ade going , he should if he is no longer interested in playing for us , we don’t need to beg a player to stay

    http://soccerfanbase.com

  12. Adebayor is not indespensable but we cant just let players go at the 1st sign of seeing them unsettled in whatever respect. Hleb has been unsettled for a while now and has failed to adapt to the Premiership even though he has improved durastically, he isnt enjoying it and wants an easier league, so let him be.

Ade on the other hand has no reason to leave if he is paid correctly, he has made some ridiculous statemnts but maybe on advice from his trusty agent to try and force Arsenal’s hand in giving him a new contract. Its just how it works people, dont see it as Ade having no love for the club and all that bollox, because i cant honestly believe that will all his hard work and effort for the team, his desire he has shown to bring a trophy to the emirates all season has been second to none. He has dragged the frontline single handedly at times due to injuries and we must be thankful that we came so close to a league title.

The guy is still going to improve, we know his faults and since last season he made a big big step up. Even if he keeps at the same level he is a big player for us.

  13. Chris

I was one of Ade’s staunch supporters but his behaviour does not show his love for the Arsenal and his ego has also overtaken him. With that attitude of having arrived which AW warned against it is difficult to see him improving if he thinks he is already as good at TH 14.

Gazzap may be right that he will have no more protection from fans like me… why should I .. he thinks only of himself and his retirement plan. With him vocalising his need to move on in public weaken AW negotiation with Barca ie a player that wants away is easier to buy. Had he conducted his negotiation in private no matter how vehemently and aggressively but kept a united front for Barca,it would have made AW job of selling him easier and would also have allowed the Arsenal to concede to his demands with looking weak.
Now it looks like selling him is teh best option unless he can stay in aclub that most fans no longer consider him a player for The Arsenal.

    Up The Arse!!!!

  14. correction – without looking weak

  15. Is durastically a real word?

If we can sell Ade for £30m and replace him then lets do it.

  16. Malaysiangunner

You are completely right, but like i said Ade leaving will only weaken us. We fans look as players as Arsenal through n through but sadly that isnt always the case, we do actually have players who dont just play for the love of the club. We look at the club differently to the players, they have their own needs to satisfy as well as the clubs.

If you was in Ade’s shoes and u were offered 50k a week by Arsenal and you are being told by ur agent that you can get double that elsewhere what would you think? I would never sign the 50k contract mate even though im a gooner, i will want more naturally. Ade is not a born n bread gooner so keeping him is gonna be hard.

  17. GOODBYE ADEBAYOR!!

And good riddance too! How some fans, even the most staunch of his supporters can believe he will be good for the club after what he revealed is beyond me! A sizeable section of gunners wanted him out even before this anyway. Now, ade has surely effaced the support of the rest as well. Get the 30 million, Arsene, before barca change their mind!!

I am happy that Peter hill wood is starting to address the mercenary issue as a serious problem. I sincerely hope that our club equips ourselves to deal with this situation in the future. This is a grim reality of football today and it would be best for arsenal to evolve and find ways to tackle it!!

And thank you Peter, for doing what Hleb could not do ie. Clarify Hleb’s future!!

    Cheers!!

  18. When the Arsenal top 50 puts Steve Williams at 38, ahead of Alex James, David Jack, Bob Wilson and George Armstrong, I don’t think you have to worry about Pat Jennings at no 10.

Adebayor is an enigma. For every occasion that he led from the front, there is a time when he was caught offside, trudging slowly back, shoulders rounded (remind you of someone else?). For every great goal; three or more sitters were missed. My gut feeling is that the parts of his game that need to improve … are the parts that cannot be taught, intelligence for one.
If he does stay – I really want to be proved wrong.

  19. Naga..

Adebayor will continue to play for Arsenal and will try just as hard if he stayed. He can only get better at the end of the day, as we all know there are parts of his game that need improving to be the ultimate striker (if there ever was or will be one?).

I think you are being quite harsh on him, i was very unhappy with his comments, but like we all know, we dont know what we hear is true nowadys or fabricated. All i know is Ade is our start stiker and has a contract for another 3 years and we have no intention of selling, Wenger stated very clearly that there will not be alot of changes.. and i will go by that. Hleb & Flamini look to be the only exceptions.

  20. I think Ade will be with us next season.

As difficult as it will be for fans to forgive him, if he keeps his head down and actually improves on last season (less offsides, better finishing, more goals) then, all will be forgotten… until summer transfers

  21. Wengerball

as much as some people dislike his attitude at times, if he wears the Arsenal shirt and scores 30 goals again i wont be complaining about his love for the club.

Another point, to all you fans posting saying sell him and buy Etoo, Huntelar etc, you actually think they will have any more love for the club than Ad has..??? Some how i doubt it, its all about money for all these players and their passion to do well. When players like Cesc, Clichy have been given the chance to succeed at a team like ours there still needs to be a matched ambition by the club to keep them. We need to show Ade that too.

  22. I hope Adebayor goes. His behaviour means that he can never be accepted by his team mates or fans.

I agree that he became big headed and arrogant towards the end of the season.

The club would never say that they want to sell him as his price would plummet.

Maybe they are trying to get a maximal fee for him and they will then reinvest in someone else.

  23. Ahhh…CHRISGOONA!! My goooood friend!!

Where the hell have you been, mate?? Good to see you!!

Well, OK, I can see that you want give him every shred of possibility of an escape, thats fine. I myself wont say too much, for me he was always overated and I was never a fan of him from day one, and this recent fiasco has simply sealed it beyond saving for me, but if someone wants to give him a hope well Its fine by me!! By the way I have seen most of the interview and I have to say ade will have to apologise, if he wants you back on your good side!!

Anyway mate, so the hleb mystery is solved (finally and that too by someone else!!) Chris what do you think about his imminent departure?? Despite what has been said I quite like Hleb because UNLIKE ADE, he is a pure talent. Mate, I think Hleb would be a bigger loss than Adebayor. What is your view on this??

  24. “if he wants to bring himself back on your good side” sorry chris!!

  25. I dont completely aree Naga.. Talent wise Hleb is amazing and you wont find a better player with a ball at his feet. But he hasnt done enough in the Premiership once again, yes he contributes to our overall play, but he has many flawes to his game.

He hasnt really cut it in the premiership – he thinks that anyway. He can have an amazing game every now and then, but for a Midfield player wanting a move away, you are never going to have that drive to score them goals from midfield like an Overmars or Ljungberg. I love watching him play Naga, but you can see he isnt happy being kicked around all the time. Good luck to him i say.

With Ade tho, he has brought alot to the team, he was our strikeforce this season, tormenting defences single handedly. He deserves a payrise i think. But the way he has gone about it is wrong, i dont believe he wants to leave, he knows hes in the best place to develop and win things.

  26. I’d prefer the 30 million.

If Chelsea buy Kaka for 80 million (or whatever), that would provide a space (and the money) for Hleb at Milan. Then everyone will be happy. Except me.

  27. Kaka is good but 80m…!!!!! how can they ask for that kind of money, makes us look stupid trying to get a 30m from Barca.. we should really value our players stupidly like these teams do.

    Cesc – 70m
    Ade – 60m
    RvP – 50m
    Toure – 45m
    Clichy – 40m
    Hleb – 30m
    Sagna – 30m
    Rosicky – 25m
    Walcott – 25m

Now Barca, you interested??? then pay up!

  28. Actually wait a sec, Walcott is English, he should be alot more than that

    make him – 35m

This is our players value, you want to even have a bid accepted for them thats what you have to meet. We aint no pushovers is the transfer market but our players seem to be wanted more than other clubs.. it is really annoying!!

  29. How many people on this site are Expats like me who get to watch 5 or 6 games at the Emirates and the rest on TV as outside UK we can see every game.
So we are not the ones who cheer EGO if he stays hes going to have a hard t¡me redeeming himslelf

  30. I am a fan of Kaka, but man, this transfer money inflation rate now deserves to be featured by “Ripleys believe it, or not”. Personally, I think 20 million pounds is the extreme limit for ANY PLAYER in the world. No player is worth more than that. What does a club earn in one season even with trophies..50 million?? Its ridiculous!!

This is the reason why I think 30 million for ade would be absolutely fantastic for the club. I am happy that we kept away from the players like Villa and arshavin. The money they were being touted for was simply beyond consideration!!

I would love to see chelsea buy arshavin for 35 million and have peter kenyon blurt out “well thats just a few million down the drain, Roman we’ll get it right next time… theres another player you know…” at the end of the season when they realise the overated value of arshavin!!

  31. Should BE Arsenal starting 11 currently for the coming season…

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure Gallas Clichy
    Walcott Cesc Diaby Nasri/Rosicky
    Adebayor RvP

Vela & Nasri wont be rushed into action, nor will Eduardo.

    Bench:
Fabianski, Eboue/Hoyte, Song/Ramsey, Denilson or Gilberto?, Bendtner, Vela

    EDUARDO – not rushed back
SENDEROS – Loaned out untill X-Mas
HLEB – out (possible exchange for another player)
DJOUROU or HOYTE will be loaned out

  32. @chris: £80m

I don’t think they asked, more like Chelsea offered.

  33. wengerball

very true, Chelski have their own seperate prices, but if maybe we value our players with a set price tag that suits us, we can probably stop alot of this bullshit speculation from ocurring each year. The only reason Hleb, Ade or anyone else will leave is from the media putting ideas and figures into their heads. We have to stop these teams from poaching our players, they know they can pay them more than we do, so putting a stupid transfer fee will compensate for it ;)

Just imagine your agent whispering in your ear constantly “Barca will double your wages”!!

  34. ADE is not moving, he will get a contract better than what he has at the moment..perhaps his method of asking for a new contract is STUPID but after 30 goals I think he deserve a better contract. Wenger will give him a new one in the middle of the season when he reaches 13-15 goals.

ADE – is not the best striker in the world but he’s getting better and he’s a GUNNER

  35. solgooner Wenger was mis quoted apparently he was talking about academy players.

  36. Ade is not a gunner. He can fuck off now. I’d rather have crouch after everything that he’s said.

  37. GOODBYE ADEBAYOR

  38. Goodbye adebay-w-hore!

  39. michael thats the interpretation of another blog NOT the confirmed facts

  40. I think that Ade not being so smart has got him into this mess. He genuinely states at a press conference that he wants to stay. As he leaves his agent is on the phone saying how can I negotiate a new contract whenI’m using Barca nd Milan as bargaining tools and you take them away. So there is an immediate about turn for the benefit of the agent-again without thought to the consequences of his actions. I dont think he even considered how the fans may react to him when the matches start.

If he stays we cannot boo him during the match as that would affect the whole team. However at the start when the announcer introduces the team and the crowd complete the players name we can remain silent. Our own little protest.

I think patiece is the key to this situation-see what happens during the friendlies.

  41. If I’m wrong I’d apolosgise to him personally. But he hasn’t refuted anything that was in the notw. I didn’t actually read it so maybe I’m open to being called a twat. But didn’t he actually say “if they don’t give me what I want I’ll leave” or “if I’m Henry’s replacement I should be paid like Henry”?

  42. And what about planning for his retirement now?

  43. michael

Adebayor might as well be sold if he isnt going to receive decent treatment from the fans, how can a player perform if his own fans are on his case? Wenger must reslove the issue, say how there was a misunderstanding and get Ade back on good terms with the fans and also his team mates or if not… there is only 1 option, and that is for Ade to go play on the greener richer grass elsewhere.

  44. @chris: I was thinking exactly that.

Once the team and the player agree where they stand then Ade would be best advised to make some sort of apologetic statement.

We might not buy it, but it can’t hurt.

  45. Yoggi, is that an unattributed quote? For all I know it is true, but really — i am sure we can find ‘Arsenal sources’ to support any assertion.

“According to Arsenal sources, Wenger feels Adebayor became increasingly big-headed following his run of success last season, and the manager worried that the striker could become a disruptive influence in the dressing room. There is also concern within the club about the 24-year-old’s footballing intelligence, after he was flagged for offside more than any other player in the Premier League last season”

  46. We should buy a centre back else our defensive problems evidenced at the latter part of last season might resurface. The current centre pair of Gallas/Toure are not good enough when we come up against formidable opponents.

We’ll be better off selling ego-driven Ade than keeping him. Unless he patches up with Cesc and the midfield creators and stop his whining anytime he doesn’t get a pass, I doubt if he get us 20 goals next season. His relations with RvP might also suffer.

I’ve never liked him because he never counted in the big games. He scored most goals but his misses against Wigan, Villa, Boro and Liverpool when we were in dire straits and those chances were more difficult to miss than score shut it for me. Sometimes he was more of a spoiler than a contributor:

Failing to give that diagonal pass to Bendtner in the Birmingham game after doing same against Eduardo in the Newcastle game.

If the price is right, Arsene will sell him; I think Arsene feels betrayed by a guy who was no show at Metz and Monaco and worked so hard to make him what he is today.

  47. utter madness!!

why get rid of a player who can score 30 goals a season! all this loyalty shi* is old fashion..

the truth is we are living in a changing era. we have experience of the loyal footballer and these footballers are still in our memory so it is hard for us to except the fact that players are no longer loyal, but our kids kids will not butt an eyelid at a player moving from club to club or moving for more money. it will be the norm and they wont know no different so there will not be any debating about why he has shafted the club, it will just be!! so lets face up to it.

someone said it before that footballers dont owe the clubs shi*.

I hope ade stays! we need his goals! there is no dignity in football anymore so stop dreaming!!!

  48. Never mind `football intelligence` – I think recent events have confirmed Adebayor has very little ACTUAL intelligence.

His comments will have lost the crowd & I can`t see a way we can hold on to him. His head has gone & won`t be coming back.

He really believes he`s TH14 mark II.

If (please God) Drog-bar goes to Inter maybe Chelski will take him.

  49. California

It was according to the telegraph, an ‘Arsenal Source’.

    Cheers

    YW

  50. Here’s hoping that Hill-Wood knows sod all about what is actually going on at the club and Hleb will remain. Hleb is quoted as saying he wouldn’t demand to leave, so that’s in contradiction to PHW.
The indications in the past have always been that PHW knows about as much as we do, ie. he reads the papers. The press jump on quotes from PHW as if he’s speaking the Arsenal gospel – but he’s got about as much chance of hearing from Arsene as we have, ie. fuck all. We all hear from Arsene for the first time in a few stolen moments as he leaves the Barnet pitch, as we always do.

  51. ARSENAL DIRECTORS IN RAGS AT CAR BOOT SALE

With the credit crunch hitting hard, the squeeze has been felt amongst the upper echelons of Arsenal Football Club. At Brick Lane Market in London, Arsenal directors, including Peter Hill Wood and Danny Fizman were seen selling of various artefacts in order to make ends meet at Arsenal football club.

On offer was Arsenal memorabilia, including match programmes, signed shirts and chunks of emirates turf, all indicators of a prosperoud bygone age.

    Peter Hill Wood explained:

“Our player wages, utility bills and the credit crunch means that we have to come here every sunday to make ends meet. Our match revenue and sponsorship income has all gone to pay mercenaries and agents. We are left with nothing”.

Danny Fizman, wearing rags, was nostalgic:

“It used to be the case that we could buy and sell players and make a living. Now, I am forced to sell my diamond stocks to pay the bills at the emirates”.

The club said they will now be considering charitable donations to fund bus trips to away matches and oranges at half time.

  52. Adebayor – GTF.

For me there is no way back – this joker had the temerity to compare himself with TH14 ffs.

    Punt him.

  53. I was on vacation last week in Brazil (where I went to the Libertadores final at the Maracana) and offline most of that time. Over the weekend I borrowed a cousin’s PC and caught up on a lot of Arsenal news. I also found out more about the Diogo from Portuguesa who apparently Arsenal had bid on (rumours abound that the player himself wants to move to Arsenal but Portuguesa won’t release him).

I was shocked by Arsene’s comments re selling players and buying cheaper ones to pay our stadium debt. My reaction was the same as arseblogger’s: that couldn’t be Arsene who said that, surely it’s an invented or misinterpreted quote. It doesn’t sound like something Arsene would ever say to the press, true or not. It’s practically suicidal. Arsene chooses his words carefully and shrewdly, it sounds like something some reporter pieced together to twist into something sensationalistic. It’s such a bad PR blunder on Arsene’s part.

    As for Ade…

I and many other Ade skeptics have been roundly condemned by his supporters among gooners for months.

I was never among the more hostile Ade bashers who gave him nicknames like Egobayor and such like. Even before his goal spree last season, I saw what he brought to the team (incredible work rate, creates all sorts of trouble for defenders, holds up the ball well, etc.). Also, Ade was never meant to be a first choice striker so it was unfair for gooners to expect that from him.

But I never had much faith in him to be any better than a support striker with a limited football intelligence and I was leery of his reputation, I’d read too much about various contentious incidents with Monaco and Togo.

When he started scoring so many goals last season, I willed myself to put aside my skepticism and kept trying to convince myself that my doubts about his ability and attitude were wrong and that I should just join the Ade bandwagon. I tried to be as fair as possible and criticized those who just shrugged away those 30 goals. I don’t buy the argument “6 of those were for Derby” — a lot of Cronaldo’s goals were for inferior teams too.

But I couldn’t jump on the bandwagon entirely because of his continual failure to understand the basics of the offside rule, and because of incidents that happened during his improved goal-scoring run.

His supporters are talking as if these recent comments from him are somehow new but they obviously have not been paying attention.

About 2 or 3 times last season (and at least once in the 06-07 season), Ade made comments to the press talking himself up, saying other clubs were interested in him. Already he was trying to pressure the club. Then he came out with some claim about Man Utd wanting to buy him, and how he was flattered (a claim I never believed). That claim generated a few stories in the press about AW investigating the possibility of MU having tapped him up.

Signs of his already large ego taking over his performance on the pitch started to become more obvious when he refused to pass to teammates at critical times, destroying goal-scoring chances at crucial games. He then destroyed a goal-scoring chance when–yet again–he went offside and publicly argued with a frustrated Rosicky on the pitch, unable to see that it was he who was at fault.

Then he made statements like “everyone loves me, the fans love me,” etc. And now these recent quotes.

All this contrasted greatly with the likes of Clichy, Sagna, Eduardo, Cesc (who could’ve been making noises to the press about other clubs wanting him as well), etc., who all kept their heads down.

And still some people defend this jerk.

I’m sorry, I’ve never ever really believed in Ade – he’s NOT a gunner. I’m not one of those who dismisses his contributions last season, I was very happy to see him do as well as he did, esp. as a lone striker. But I’ve never felt comfortable with him as an Arsenal player in the way I feel about others in our team.

And as for the argument that he has a right to want more money…he is clearly listening to agents and others around him telling him that he can make big money and make a big name for himself at a glamorous club. These are people whose interest it is to make big money transfers, who are not at all interested in his welfare or future career.

But he’s listening to them because he ALWAYS has had a massive, disruptive ego problem, something his Monaco manager observed long ago. None of this is new. He is an eager audience for that kind of flattery. For awhile I thought maybe Wenger’s touch was helping him to grow up but obviously not.

The fact is, Ade is just another Anelka–influenced by the hype about his skills, thinking that moving to a bigger club will make him a huge star with loads of cash to go along with it. A smart young player who’s had ONE good season would see that it is actually in his interest to continue to try to develop his talent at a club like Arsenal rather than risk the momentum his growth is taking. He’s hurting his own career.

Whether it makes us weak or not, however we will miss his contribution to the team (and I agree, we will miss him), I for one want him to go immediately. I can’t stand the sight of him anymore and I don’t want to see him wear an Arsenal shirt.

And what if he stays and does perform well for us? It’ll be the very least he can do for us. If he can’t stand any abuse from fans, tough. He has to learn that his actions have consequences.

And it is not at all true that gooners have never mistreated players — just ask Senderos, Hleb and Eboue who have to listen to loads of abuse from the Emirates crowd every week.

  54. Mymarcus

I agree with you on Ade. Unlike YW and Flint who never saw anything wrong with him, I knew it would get to this far in the end.

Adebayor’s cockiness and lack of intelligence in his play coupled with his ranting on the field were kept hidden because of his mostly tap-in goals. He never celebrated other players goals and it was him scoring or no one else. In fact while he contributed to our position last season, he also caused our downfall in the latter stages; refusing to pass to Eduardo and Bendtner while in better positions to score against Newcastle and Birmingham, were cases in point.

Arsene is waiting for a good offer to offload him and he must have lined up a replacement already.

If he leaves, its possible he might be afflicted with the ‘Arsenal Curse’ that is currently eating Reyes to destruction. If I were him I will just look at what happened to Anelka. Footballers don’t learn from history.

  55. People who are persuaded by money don’t learn from anything, and most of the time they don’t have any intelligence, therefore they depend on the money to get them through life.

Money is everything in their life, because they can’t learn anything else (i.e. Stupid).

I’m not disappointed in Ade’s “Cockiness” or Falmini’s “Greed” or Diarra’s “Impatience”…….I’m worried about 3 of our players sharing the same problem “Stupidness”.

Some of us fans, have a hand in players being greedy because we encourage clubs to spend “Stupid” amounts of money on players that most likely don’t deserve it. How would we feel if we paid 30 Million for Flamini, Ade, or Diarra and then they leave in three years? I guess now is the time to appreciate a manager who sees the future and never really spend more than the wise and logical fee for a good player….i.e. Sagna, Eduardo…etc.

  56. Yes, and you can add Gilberto and Cygan to NYmarcus’s list.

It’s an interesting list because, although it includes players who aren’t particularly good (Senderos, Cygan and Eboue)and one whose diving perhaps makes him fair game (Eboue), it also includes two who for skill and professionalism have been above reproach, game after game, year after year – Hleb and Gilberto. Their crime? Disloyalty, stupidity, greed, laziness, injury-proneness, lack of skill? Nope. They’re just not the kind of players the average English fan likes. They’re too quiet for the Premiership, they’re subtle as opposed to hard tackling and direct. It wouldn’t matter how badly a Flam or a Diaby or a Ray Parlour behaved; they would always be more popular than Hleb or Kaka or even Jo Cole (one of the best English playmakers there is, in my view, but less direct than Lampard or Gerrard and therefore less valued by England fans).

Who will be next for the scapegoating? Nasri? Barazite? Merida? Denilson and Gibbs should be OK – they shoot, they tackle – and Ade will probably be forgiven because he’s nothing if not direct. But that there will be a new scapegoat to replace Hleb and Gilberto, and that that player’s game, happiness and transfer value will be badly effected, it’s as inevitable as night following day.

capegoating and cruelty are widespread among fans, and the effect on the player is mostly disasterous. reason I don’t want Ade to stay as the chances are his game will deteriorate and won’t be offered 30 million again.

I hear Milan are interested in him yet again. Yawn. Why can’t they make up their minds? The problem for us is the time all this is taking.

The problem is how to replace him.

  57. Oops, I was starting to say something about Ade, then I saw NYmarcus’s post which I thought raised a more interesting point… Forgot to delete all the bit I began with.

  58. Mia, thanks for mentioning Hleb and Gilberto. Apparently Hill-Wood has known for a while that Hleb wanted to go. I don’t know just why, but I can think of two reasons. One is the abuse he suffered from the fans right up to last season. The same fans who talk loyalty all the time seemed to think he was really shit before his incredible first half last season woke them up. this was nonsense, of course. his performances seem to drop later in the year, but perhaps that is because he puts out so much on the field. the other thing that is apparent is that playing in england is particularly hard on a player like him. it is difficult enough to play as arsenal do and get little or no help from the refs, but Hleb, in particular, seems to suffer. i would guess that he has had six or seven obvious penalties turned down over the last two years.

  59. Someone mentioned Eboue earlier. I’d actually forgotten all about him. I sincerely hope Wenger is doing his best to flog him.

  60. Malaysian Gunner

Ur country’s crap. Been there…..total shit hole mate. Football’s crap there too. Double crap.

  61. I have a feeling wenger might have actually said the thing…. because he knows him saying anything won’t be changing things…. if he doesn’t sell he doesn’t sell …

Now in the present wake of things…few things are pretty clear.

Wenger is targeting players who have a release clause in their contract
and… converting the spine of the team to english. which is scary considering he wants to leave the club in safe hands and void of his “misgivings” as put by english media….This is scary.

Now there is a very valid reason for wenger to make such a statement…. it doesn’t change our club to a selling club.. yes there will be a bit more poaching.. but if we dont sell… we dont sell.

On the positive side… it might actually make few of bids for top players a bit more affordable for us.

    Lets look at Arshavin’s case.
Now as far as I know he has a release contract of 10 million pounds but it has to be him who has to exercise it. SO if the club asks for 20 millions and we dont agree to it… the player might actually take to what wenger said about lack of funds and exercise the clause… mind you the kind of football we play will be a major major part in luring him here.

    After all Wenger knows!!!!!

  62. The taste of foreign players now setting Arsenal backwards. The foreign players come in, get the training, get to the limelight and are shopped all over to leave the club.

Cole and Campbell were as bad as the foreign ones but its just one out of the ordinary and we could’ve still kept them if we wanted to but in the end Arsene decided that it was better they left.

My point is that its more easy for a foreign player to leave than a local lad especially playing for the top 4. All the foreign players who’re calm is because they’re not good attracting buyers. As soon as Flamini became good he got attracted and left. Senderos, Djourou, Eboue, Denilson,Diaby, Traore, Bendtner are all all potential disruptive agents. As soon as they get their feet and reach the top, the vultures will decend and start unsettling them to leave.

My wish is, if there is an English player with a comparable talent to a foreign player, then Arsene should go for the English where the cost is the same as the English lad, because the probability of he leaving after getting to the top is lower.

13 million quid for Nasri could bring in Ashley Young with similar abilities, a born Gunner, he could play for the club till retirement. Nasri meanwhile might push to leave when he gets to the top.

Similarly, Arsene should sell Hleb and buy SWP.

Well, it seems Arsene is getting it now and will work hard to bring in local boys to the first team to prevent Arsenal from imploding by the acts of this foreign ‘mercenaries’ styling themselves as quality and cheap.

Foreign players are no more cheap and their prices are getting closer to English players? Bosingwa, a right full back for 16.5 million quid and 16.8 million quid for Modric is a lot of money. Nasri for 13 million quid is also a lot of money at his age and experience.

  63. Howard is Villa want 18 million for Barry how will they sell Young for 13? They would want in excess of 20 million and he is not worth that.

  64. -is +if

  65. So are you saying we should buy English players because they are crap and no one from abroad will want to buy them? On top of that you want us to spend a fortune on them? Kind of lose/lose situation…What a great insight you have for our club?

At least the foreigners we get for peanuts bring some good money when we sell them.

  66. Howard

Whilst you seem to be congratulating yourself on being right about Ade’s abilities, you might like to consider that 2 of the 4 world clubs, above us in the pecking order, seemingly are prepared to offer at least £20m+ for him.

The matter of player loyalty is more based, as I have said before, is a matter of who is going to want you, how good you are.

There are some facts that we have to face.

In my opinion, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man United & temporarily for cash reasons only Chelsea, are above us in terms of being attractive to play for.

There may be others of equal stature to us like Liverpool, Bayern Munich & Inter, but in general we must be in the top 6 clubs in the world, in terms of players, wanting to play for us.

The big 4/5 will not always have the need for our best players, nor will it be inevitable that our player will want to go. Howard might also like to consider that English players may be more open to moving to Man Utd.

We could, as Howard suggests, sign players, who would stay because they would not be good enough to attract offers from the big 4/5, or we could carry on doing what we are, in getting the best players we can on the budget we have.

I feel Howard’s solution would make us comfortably a top 10 PL side, whilst the latter system has kept us competitive in both the PL & CL for years.
