Ade-nough? More Room In The Midfield Inn

The ever-dependable Emmanuel Adebayor saga is brought kicking and screaming back into your living room by reports this morning that Barcelona will be back today with a £30m bid that Arsenal will accept just in time for Joan Laporta to announce before Sunday’s motion of no confidence is held.

However, the player is not so sure of this according to his agent, Stephane Courbis who has had more mentions on these pages in the past weeks than many have in the previous two and half years of the blog’s existence,

It is vital for Arsenal show their motivation to keep him

And why is that Stephane? For the love of the club he has shown or perhaps so he can save face should the Catalans not come running back with another bid and Adebayor is left with no other options but to sign the £45k per week deal that is reportedly on offer from Arsenal, claiming that it was the desperation of Arsene to keep his services that persuaded him to sign when everyone will know that his suitors have been priced out of the market? Never mind, eh, because as Arseblogger points out this morning, all Barca want to know is that you love them

No doubt that the fast and the furious will be idealising their replacements – Arshavin, Villa, Podolski, Gomez, Santa Cruz, Santa Claus – but it will not be the ones Arsene buys, simply because we know about them. One problem with selling for big fees is that purchasing becomes more of a pain with prices rising because everyone thinks you have cash falling out of every pocket on your suit; a £15m striker now becomes £20m. That’s the problem with recessions, inflation goes up.

If he stays, Adebayor will not be joined by Pascal Cygan’s recommendation, Marcos Senna, on the basis that he is 32 years old and too old for Arsene, he will cost £25m if reports and to be believed and more to the point, the player does not want to leave Villarreal.

It is one of two positions where Arsene has to do something by his own admission. Obviously Flamini leaving is the more immediate source of concern but there are sufficient replacements in the squad already; Diaby, Denilson, Song and Djourou are most likely with Gilberto there to bring some experience. The key for Arsene though is how much of a change in the team’s style of play will be required. Flamini brought more energy to the team than Gilberto, very much in the style of the old ‘box-to-box’ midfielder whose absence is much lamented in the media. Diaby is in that mould whilst Denilson and Song are more Gilberto in their approach, Djourou bridging the gap. Personally, I would prefer to see Diaby there rather than on the wings. He has of course been troubled by injury in recent years, some wear and tear as well as the victim of an outrageous challenge. That assumes Arsene does not buy someone as a direct replacement

The second position? Centre back…

Onto other matters, the televised games for the UK have been announced so the following kick-offs have changed [a health warning on these; they were 'leaked' and as of yet are unconfirmed]:

Sat Aug 16 12.45pm Sky – Arsenal v West Brom

Quiet times before the squad return to training on Monday and much as I cannot be fussed by friendlies, they cannot start soon enough because it means the season is nearly upon us…

’til Tomorrow

  1. Adebaybore – is a pun bland enough for this tedious saga.

This summer’s like newsart by a conceptual artist: Moments of craziness interspersed with loooooong periods of boredom.

Even the arrival of Nasri, one of Europe’s hottest young talents, has been stretched out like a glob of flavourless, month-old chewing-gum.

    Wake me in August.

  2. 1s t

  3. Fail – Arslan.

    BTW, nice blog YW.

  4. Good update YOGI,

I agree with you and I think you should just stop with the ade discussion,no need to get stressed out, unless its about the price, you are wasting your blog space. A sizeable chunk of gunners like me did not want him even before this anyway. But this recent discourse has truly set the rest of the fans against him!! He is not worth it, Yogi!!

I seriously think we are taking the FLAMINI situation too lightly!! Diaby is NOT THE ANSWER by any stretch of the imagination, he may have a role in the team but certainly not the Flamini spot. I see song as a good back up and not a first team player for defensive midfield!!

I am starting to get worried about the centre-back. I believe its an absolute must, no question about it. UDINESE is willing to sell Zapata for 15 million, I dont know why we are not going for him. Do any gunner have an update on the Zapata??

Even if we dont get him arsene needs to bring atleast another centre back of HIS choice!!

  5. Flamini wasn’t just the energy; he was the wins. We won with him on the pitch and lost when he was off.
Without Flamini and Adebayor, where is the grit and the aggression going to come from. Vital.
The others are good to brilliant and I love watching them, but this silky animal needs teeth.

  6. YW…I love your blog, its well written and informative.

I am seriously concerned about our prospects for the upcoming season. IMHO, we are a better team with Ade than without him. The majority of gooners are angry with Ade, I understand that. But, if we want to make 30 million off him, if we rate him at that, why don’t we pay him like a 30 million pound player?? We need to heed RVP’s warning. He said if we keep on insulting our top players with uncompetitive wages, we will lose a lot of players in their prime. I have watched a lot of the matches from last season again and Ade did a helluva a job. He’s goals carried us when RVP was out, Fab was out and Edu was still finding his feet. We were not the same without him in the side. People exaggerate and say he missed a lot of sitters….but Ade’s strike rate was just a little off Torres’s. Yes, we can get Santa Cruz in, but I do not think he will fit our style of play.

If Ade stays (I hope he does), booing him, like a lot of gooners are suggesting, is plain counter productive. It will ultimately affect the team’s performance..and we all want Arsenal to do well.

  7. HKM!

Yes I agree Flamini is a great loss, But dont worry about adebayor, we wont miss him if we get santa cruz or a decent forward in. We are still the best attacking force around in the BPL. We just need a centre back and maybe a replacement for Flamini. THATS ALL!!

  8. Naga personaly If the club never fell apart after TH14 who Arsene himself dubs the best striker ever do you think Arsenal will roll over and die after Flamini. After all , Hleb. Flamini and Ade had been resigned for the scrap heap before last season even began and we all thought that we would be languishing in mid table. I can assure you that one of these players who everybody keeps asking to be sold Senderos, Gallas, Denilson, Gilberto, Djorou, Diaby Song will be the ones to turn it around next season once given an injury free run of games.

I know it makes gooners sick at the thought but we wont be laughing at Senderos next season when he scores the winner in the champions league final.Throwing money at new signings just isnt the Arsenal way. The most important new signings always come from within the ranks so no need to look very far.

  9. South African Gooner,

I agree that we should pay more competitively, but the Adebayor situation is a completely different matter, Ade was a bit part player (back-up player to Henry) he was given a new contract last year and got his chance in the team. We all know how well he has performed and i agree he deserves to be earning on par with ‘our’ highest earners at the club. I.e. Gallas, Fabregas etc.

BUT.. theres a certain way you go about your business and Ade and his agent have treated the club wrongly. If you want an improved contract because you feel you are an important part of the team then fair enough, go speak to the manager are ask for a re-negotiation of your contract. Not go to the media as soon as you hear another top club wants you and moan “im only getting 40k when i can probably go elsewhere and get 100k”. I dont feel special…!! i want to prepare for my retirement??

I wouldnt mind if Ade went behind closed doors and asked Wenger and the board for a payrise, but this hasnt happened and his behaviour ands attitude towards Arsenal is disrespectful to say at the least. He was our top striker last season and i wouldnt mind him staying, but i think Wenger is very annoyed with him and i wouldnt be surprised if he came down hard on him. I wouldnt personally offer Ade more than 60k a week, because next season he has no chance of bettering his goal tally with Van Persie, Rosicky, Eduardo back in the frame.

  10. I don’t like the way Ade has gone about this but I can understand why he wants a pay rise. He is on about 35k a week which in today’s game is relative peanuts for a striker who scored 30 goals last season. Even the 45k he has been offered is still trying to get him on the cheap – the usual Arsenal way. The fact that he signed the contract last year is almost irrelevant as there are clubs out there who will pay him much more. I don’t like this either but that is the reality of it. Players now how the power and if Arsenal insist on not paying the going rate for players they will struggle to keep the ones they have and fail to attract top class signings.

Arsenal can buy up and coming players but once they establish themselves and want a big pay rise Arsenal will not pay them and they will leave like Flam and now Ade.

I don’t think that Ade is worth 80k a week but 60k is not unreasonable but we have offered 45k. Why should he stay when he can get more money elsewhere? There is no loyalty left in the game but if Arsenal want to compete, they must pay the wages and transfer fees instead of counting the pennies.

  11. let the quak go he thinks he is titi when he’s just a piece of shit.buying 4 of the following:villa, santa, podo, veloso, boruc & dunne would make us untouchables for a2nd time. please mr wenger dont rely on small inexperienced boys only we want to win the champs leaque we need classy players please do something we are waiting.

  12. @south African gooner

Gooners are sick of and want Ade to be sold because he is not speaking anything that will show his desire to stay no matter what his pay rise is–Cesc or clichy–Now he had one paradox of a season, had he not scored some vital goals we would be 4th or even 5th however if he had scored the sitters he missed we would’ve be the champs of englad and europe.
All i can say is he was(is*) a team player–a very good team player—.He was good last season–but if he wnats to be a cunt now can we stop him.

And he is no Henry or DB or Bobby who is hard to be replaced.Hard but not impossible.

So let the man decide.Let him speak now.Let him show the desire that he is worthy enuf to wear the Red and white. If he thinks he is worth 100 K now.. then dude he is stoned.
Is he worth 35 million, if he thinks he can get 100K then he is worth 35MIll. if Arsene is selling him and if he too reckons that so be it.

    hail the gunners.

  13. GUNNER4LIFE!!

Thats a sensible arguement, but we must also take into account that Henry was on the decline, he was 29. Now with Flamini I think its different, he had just become one of the most awesome defensive midfielders with us and he was just hitting the prime 24. Mate, it still depresses me a lot that he will now play the finest years of his life with other clubs while we were the ones that brought him there!!

G4L, I am not suggesting that the club will fall apart, we will get by, but believe me whoever plays there will not be as good as flamini.

I have nothing against the other players you suggested, I will leave arsene to decide. But about senderos, Yes, we wont be laughing, he will make us cry, mate!! But I guess you like him so I will respect that and say no more!!!

By the way G4L, I think SANTA CRUZ is a good option for the ade situation, What do you think???

  14. “GOONER4LIFE” sorry!!

  15. Chris…Mongo….you both make good points. I agree, he went about it the wrong way. I don not think he is worth 80K a week, but in the same breath I dont think the 45 K a week was a fair offer for him especially given the fact that there are other teams out there who are willing to pay him more. I just think a lot of gooners understimate the impact that Ade’s departure would have on our team performance. IMHO, I think Arsene understands this and that’s why he is playing hard ball. Any replacement will take time to settle, and with the level of competition in the EPL …we need to hit the ground running. Stability will be the key to our success…not a massive influx of new players…again IMHO…..

  16. Ade should have conducted his negotiations in private. He went public, and insulted Arsenal with his behaviour. If he stays he’ll deserve the boos. It may be counter productive, but thats not new to teh gooners, what about teh ’shooot’ boys, or the silent majority, god it’ll be depressing at teh Emerates next season if we done get off to a good start

  17. Purely from the business angle, I would accept £30m for Adebayor. Won’t you?

  18. in purely business angel i would accept £25m :P

  19. Naga.
Agree totally that the thing people should be worrying about is not Ade or Hleb, but replacing Flamini.
For me the Flamster was like three players. He was the engine, and the spirit, and the hard-ass. In one guy.
He ran all day, shouted at people when their heads drooped late on, and whacked anyone on the other side who looked at him crookedly.
Maybe we can get another enforcer, but who of the current crop is going to make up some of that energy and/or the spirit?
It isn’t necessary to have an Ade type hassling at the front, but I think it is imperative to replace the energy/spirit/push/aggression we have lost in mid-field.
Amazing what a big hole a player of such comparatively modest skills could leave.

And agree about the defender. Even before last season I felt that we couldn’t compete without a Vidic-type defender to handle the Drogbas of the world. Love Sendie, but he is never going to get faster. If Arsene reckons that Song or Djourou are to be The One, then he needs to feed them aggression pills.
We need someone 6’4” who eats glass.

  20. HKM!

You hit the nail on the head!!

    Cheers!!

  21. Thirty million sounds brilliant but what will they offer in wages? I won’t sleep easy till Ade has agreed personal terms.

Chelsea are clearly losing their touch. Why didn’t they buy our entire women’s team? Why stop at just two? Can’t blame the ladeez themselves, though – they’re students or in low-paid part-time jobs.

When do we find out who we’ve got in the Champions League qualifier? Hopefully we’ll sail through as usual, even if half our squad is injured, on the beach or still unsigned, but having seen ManU and Juve nearly beaten by tough, fit, well organised sides from Eastern Europe, I can’t help biting my nails. Still, compared to next year, when the qualifier could be as tough as the final, I suppose we don’t need to worry, and the experience of the Emirates and Amsterdam comps will help the new and kid players settle in.

  22. since its about business 35m will be better.

By the way, YW, Good post as per usual!

  23. Naga gunner: Zapata got his cheekbone and eye-socket smashed in playing for the Columbians against Peru. So, if it was AW’s plan to sign him it would have to happen just before the end of the transfer window, when Zapata would be expected to be able to undertake the medical.

  24. Hey MIA!!

Dont worry, barca will certainly pay more than arsenal in wage if not 120,000k. Ade probably knows now (even with his fungus infested brain) that he cant stay!!

  25. MJC!!

    Thank you!

  26. give them ade for 22 million take yaya in return.

22 million is enough for berbatov even.

  27. Naga

I dont think we are getting a defender, so theres no point speculating, Wenger is happy to work on the Toure Gallas partnership a bit more. At the end of the day individually they are world class, just a bit of direction in managing their positional changes etc and they will be fine, there is no crisis at the back!!!

Our crisis area or main area for concern was wide midfield, we didnt have any width. Vela is coming in, Nasri is coming in, Walcott will play more now, also we have Eboue as cover, Hleb if he stays and Rosicky also. Wide midfield has been resolved, We need to shore up the midfield defensively and replace Ade if he leaves. A defender is not needed, we have many quality players that can cover for Gallas n Toure.. so end of debate and stop asking for a defender mate.

  28. CHRISGOONA!!

You reminded me!! A few posts back I had asked you about the Gallas situation. You didnt answer. Chris, I was wondering, Is gallas on the decline?? Mate, I was asking you about how Toni turned him twice TOO EASILY, only for the striker to blaze over during the france-italy match.

Mate, gallas is not getting any younger and I cant believe he has years left on his contract. He is 31-32 isnt he?? SOL CAMPBELL was sold at 32 wasnt he?? so whats different about gallas. I have a feeling that if we get Sol even now he will be no less than gallas. Is there a disparity of treatment here?? (I remember kolo making a mention recently)

  29. chris GOONA10: Interestingly, Wenger originally said in May that he WAS going to buy a central defender. Then, during the Euros, he said that he was “no longer looking to buy a defender”.
So perhaps he had already signed someone, but we can’t announce it because of unavoidable delays.
    Zapata would fit the above….

  30. Gallas is 30. He’s 31 in August.

  31. Gunner4life!!

No chance of us getting Berbatov, even if he rebels spurs will directly hand him over to Man utd. who also want him!!

YAYA, I dont know mate, are you suggesting he is Flaminis replacement???

  32. MJC!!!

Are you sure?? If I remember correctly Gallas is exactly a year older than Henry as they happen to share the same birthday. Henry will be 31 in august so I think Gallas will be 32!! Can anyone verify this??

  33. Last year Flam was one of our best players so I see why people want a replacement. Thing is, we paid 4 million for Denilson yonks ago: are you saying we should now sell him or let him sit on the bench for another three years?

Denilson is in the Gilberto mould, not a hustler like Vieira or Flam, but he’s a good tackler and his distribution is excellent. With Diaby alongside him to do the hustling and get forward, I think he’d be fine. I hate the idea of Diaby alone in defensive midfield as he wouldn’t shield the defence, which would mean Cesc would have to drop back, but a pairing could be the answer, especially as it allows us to play three strikers, a good thing from several points of view: (1) Eduardo wouldn’t have to play left midfield because we don’t have enough wingers; (2) nor would Diaby; (3) we’ve solved the problem of Bendtner being too slow for a 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.

In short: a front three of some combination of Van Persie, Walcott, Vela, Bendtner, Eduardo; and a central three of some combination of Cesc (or Nasri) with two behind: Denilson and Ramsey, Denilson and Diaby, Ramsey and Song – plus we’ve Gilberto as backup. Buy a Flam clone (in the unlikely event we could find one) and he’d always been the first choice, which would so impede the progress of Denilson, Diaby and Ramsey we might as well not have bought them.

  34. DOB from Arsenal.com: August 17, 1977

  35. Same DOB for both Gallas and Henry

  36. MIA!!

For me, if Diaby has a role in the team, he can only be a rather interesting back-up for Cesc. I think he is more about flair than hard-headedness, same for denilson, I think he will get outmuscled, especially in england. If we buy nobody, then that role has to be played between gilberto and Song!!!

And about your formation, Dont you think it will strip us of all width?? Its a 4-3-3 if I am not mistaken??

  37. denilson is a fighter the way he goes in tackles and wins balls…

I still think we will need a class defender. So much of gallas abilities which i dont doubt a bit, but at his age he cannot play all matches in a season and needs to be rotated same for kolo. So a defender has to be bought…. i have a feeling its goin to be zapata. Thts one name which is completely missing from the transfer market. And I agree with Wenger when he says kompany won’t be coming… he is a bit high when he plays… thinks he is a rock star or something.

3 upfront will never happen… clichy has attacking instincts which he cannot curb…. he will surely surge forward in runs… and if there is no cover on the mid flanks… it will be a bit loopy there.

I think we are going to play the same 4-4-2, 4-5-1 /4-4-1-1 with Fabregas clichy sagna as regular starters.. and gallas and toure alternate.

Denilson looks like he will be getting a lot of games and so will Diaby on the left flank. Nasri on Right

    Forwards…

    Ade/Bendtner/RVP – Vela/Walcott/Dudu

Rest your guess is as good as mine

  38. I forgot hleb….
    wish wenger does the same
    :D

  39. Nasri is on his way at long last (again)

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12874_3775596,00.html

the 21-year-old’s agent, Jean-Pierre Bernes, has explained that he expects Nasri to seal his move to Arsenal when he returns from his holidays.

“He is on his holidays. It (the transfer) will be made when he will be back, in about 10 days,” said Bernes

  40. Lets just hope that he is not on holiday in Spain!

  41. What i really wish and want form wenger is to go for klaas jan huntelaar he’s a wonderful player believe me he’s better than adebayor and even santa cruz he’s 24 , he scored 72 goal from 80 game , he could bring him for only 25 million euro as for flamini replacement i think veloso or aquilani r both great signing one of them would be great

  42. Naga

sorry i didnt reply sooner, Gallas may be on the decline, but we need all the experience we can get at the moment, we cant just have a full squad of young talented players who want to prove to the world how to play footy. We need players who have been there and done it all b4, Gallas is one of them. Gilberto is too, and we cannot afford to lose them.

If we brought in Zapata i will be happy, but at the same time that means either Djourou or Senderos or Song or maybe all of them will suffer for it. Im not 100% convinced that we will bring a defender in.

  43. The Gallas/Toure partnership has been together for two years and it has not work. Why because neither of them is good in the air. Most Gooners would stay a new CH was a priority this summer.A player who can dominate like Adams and Campbell did.Gallas and Toure are good players but they dont work together

  44. while I agree that Gallas should stay for his experience and outright ability, IF wenger were to buy Zapata, it is Gallas who should go. Toure is not the one who should be sat in the stands. Senderos’ position would also come under review.

At this moment in time Gilberto is our main DM. I dont think there can be any question of that. Only transfers in or out will change that fact.

  45. Chris

I agree with Peter Storey’s Budgie. Look at our failings last season. We could not hold on to our leads. Gallas and Toure both taking turns to make defensve errors plus Sendy in crucial matches. I looked at Vidic/Ferdinand or Terry/Cavalho both pairings solid when ours were failing end of last season. We lost both the EPL and CL because of defensive lapses.
It has been often said by others that Toure and Gallas individually are very good defenders but together it did not worked and I strongly believe it will not work. Infact Toure/Sendy or Gallas/Sendy will make more sense but for Sendy’s inclination to lose concentration in crucial moments. We need a very good experience CB , I do not care if he is an unknown or not known yet( ala Sagna) type of signings of a CH/CB.

    Up The Arse!!!

  46. and the CB needs to be both tall above 6 2 and mobile.

  47. Ok Peter Storeys Budgie

You say most Gooners bla bla will say we need a new Tony Adams. My 1st point is you will not find a Tony Adams like player available that will come in our team just like that, them kind of players are home grown players which Wenger is working on.

My Second point is, Toure is undroppable and Gallas is Captain, removing the captaincy from Gallas is a very risky decision to make and we will have to replace him. All you Gooners that are wanting a new defender to come in and everything will be all gravy have to be realistic, we have lost at least 1 player this summer, WE NEED CONSISTENCY, this is not championship manager where you can bring a player in and they will hit the ground running, our defense will be watertight – im sorry to say your all wrong.

Even if a defender is bought he will cover for Gallas & Toure, or rotated to see what works best, even then it will cause problems.

  48. As for the Flamster. I agree he is a big loss. We will nevertheless adapt. Look Cesc was able to play with Xavi and Ineiasta combination ( albeit both workd class midfielders in technique and the football brain. We have a few of those potentially( Denilson coems to mind). I radical idea exchange Iniesta or Xavi with Ade plus 10 million pounds.

    Up the Arse!!!!

  49. Chris

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. It was not water tight last season and now Gallas is older and slower.

    But time will tell.

    Up The Arse!!!

  50. Chris

No player should be undropable.Toure was poor after the ANC.And Gallas lost the plot after the Birmingham game,The problem last season was not scoring goals but failing to hold on to leads. We conceded 10 goals more than Man utd.If you cant see we have a problem with the centre of the defence you cant have been watching Arsenal last season

  51. no,no…Malaysian gunner!!

Xavi and iniesta is the last thing we need. We are already overcrowded in the attacking midfield. I think even Nasri is a surplus to requirement good. What we need is a hard headed “waterboy”, not our typical flair player to counterfoil our usual technical game!!

I will reserve my judgement on Gallas because i think this is his last chance to prove himself to the arsenal fans. Anymore of last season’s antics and undermining the club, He should be KICKED OUT!!

    CHRISGOONA!!

It breaks my heart to agree with you that there cannot be anyone like TONY today. We will never see the likes of Rodders again. Sad but true!!!

  52. The vital games at the end of last season:

Chelsea 1-0 up with 15mins to go Gallas and Toure ripped apart by Drogba. 2-1 Chelsea
Man Utd:1-0 up wiyh half an hour to go.Gallas gives away penalty. 2-1 Man Utd
Liverpool CL 1-0 up Sender-dross falls asleep 1-1
2-2 three minutes left Toure gives away penalty, exit from the CL

Three massive games all lost because of mistakes by our centre halves

  53. Peter storey budgie!!!

I can see you have a point on Gallas, I agree!! but you cannot go after TOURE. The man is the closest to being ours through and through that is what Chrisgoona means. And I absolutely do not blame Toure for the poor games he had after the ANC, He was simply BURNT OUT!! Playing 4 games between 8 days in that hellish african sun in the middle of the busiest part of the european season.

Mate, its a miracle he even returned to play for us after that. I personally acquit Toure from any blame whatsoever for our failings last season!!

    Cheers!!!

  54. Naga

No-one is doubting Toure’s loyalty but that does not make anyone above criticism. You are right to say that he was burnt out but more to the point, in the latter part of the season, he was played out of position at right-back.

My concern over centre back is not necessarily the individuals but the fact that there is no-one putting them under pressure for their places. Song may do that this season but with Senderos, I am not sure.

Despite what the player said in May, Arsene’s confidence in him appeared to have been shaken by Senderos’s own reaction to Anfield.

    YW

  55. YOGI!

    Point taken!!

You are right about Senderos. I do hope Arsene lets him go. Its not fair on the boy, his attitude is spot on, but sadly his failings come down to ability which will always haunt him and bring the wrath of the fans upon him!!

If he moves on, it will improve his career, I think he would be good for a mid-table club in spain or italy like betis or lazio!!

  56. Naga

You could be right that Senna made all of the attacking midfielders looked good for Spain. My approach is this Senna is closer to Denilson/Giberto type of player and not Flamini type. Denilson/Bert will sweep infront of the defense while Xavi/Iniesta/Fab/Walcott/Diaby/RVP attack with speed and energy. I have a lot of time for Xavi or Iniesta and they are Arsenal type of players now that Hleb and Ade is gone.

And no one is above criticism not even AW.

    Up the Arse!!!

  57. He can give best improve here, he just need a real chance.

  58. now that Hleb and Ade is almost as good as gone.

  59. Who can improve Dejan?

  60. I am not having a go at Toure and Gallas as individuals but as a partnership. To say we cant drop Gallas because he is Captain and Toure because the fans love him is crazy. They should be judged on their performances.Their partnership just does not work. The big problem last season was there was no competition for their places. We only had the error-prone Sender-dross to come in.Thats why we need a commanding no nonsense player at the back like Vidic at Man Utd

  61. Gilberto would have looked good playing for Spain! International football is not the same as prem football. OK its a higher level technically but not physically and not even in pure pace terms. the prem is fast and physical but often low in flair. Flam was perfect for that but I just think Bert is a bit outt of his depth especially as he is getting older.
France really could have benefitted from having Flamini in the team. Now Makalele has retired, I think Flam should get the job – its between him and Diarra.

  62. I think Denilson could be perfect next Cesc. Stop thinking about Flamini vs. Gilberto. Think of him like a developing Marco Senna, not gilberto. Flamini was fantastic and made the difference in certain types of games where aggression was needed. But I think he failed to mop on defense at times. Marco Senna is a different type of holding midfielder. When he played against us in the CL semi’s he was on the right (they had Requelme in the middle) and was really tough. Since then he has been moved to the center and while he is nominally supporting Bobby Pires, a lot of creative stuff actually comes through him. He takes great free kicks (very accurate) and can get forward.

Mia, I think two holding midfielders is good for Man U — it makes them very solid and frees the two wingers to go forward very quickly. And Carrick and Hargreves are also good going forward, so there is no loss when Man U play the possession game. But for us? We have Hleb or Nasri, Rosicky, Eboue (don’t tell me, but I kinda think he will come good) who are all attacking mids. Where will they play in a 3 man midfield?

  63. I really feel for Senderos, or for his downfall.
IMO, he filled the void left by Toure more than enough, forging a very solid partnership with Gallas. Few can argue that S+G CB combi wasn’t working. The crack started appearing when Toure came back from ACN, completed knackered, but still smoothly slot into “his” place at the back. And from then on, we all know the story.

I’ve always thought AW is a man of principle and have had a utmost respect for him; but why was it that, while he gave the chance to Flamini over Giberto to prove his salt, he didn’t give it to Senderos over Toure, disrupting and eventually breaking up a formidable partnership of S+G? When it comes to CB partmership, 1+1 needs be really bigger than 2. For me, Senderos and Gallas was 0.5+1 >>> 2, while Toure+Gallas is 1+1 <<<< 2, as many people already pointed out.

And this is the reason I rate Gallas more than Toure as a player at least at the moment (I’m not rating one more than the other as a person because I do not know them personally) – Gallas worked really well with Senderos and Song. Gallas may not have enough in him to lead 10 other players on the pitch, but he certainly has enough to lead another half of CB. On the other hand, Toure, I observe, needs somebody he can rely on to bring the best out of him.

Not considering dropping Toure only because he is a fan’s favorite, that’s beyond rediculous. And pointing fingers at only those around him, as we love him too much to criticise, won’t help anyone. As Cesc mentioned in an interview session during Euro2008, and AW repeated the next day, we need a competative team. Especially for a team of Arsenal’s calibre.

  64. I havn’t got anything remotely interesting to say!I cant be arsed to waste my time on this transfer shite anymore! will he wont
he why he who gives a fuck if he!!rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!whatever happens we are still gunner WIN THE LEAGUE NEXT SEASON!!! sorry for the caps n that!!

  65. Just my humble option, but I agree that Sedy was doing just fine in Toures abscence; maybe, just maybe AW should have trusted him to continue… Dont change a winning team and all that.

He was not part of many of our defeats last season few and far between as they were although i know in many people minds he conceeded all the goals!

I for one rate him and hope he can overcome this adverse time, and find his top form again!

  66. moderfukinration my fukin arfukinarse!! sorry just wanted to see if that got by!!

  67. team spirit

change a winning team!! like the win at liverpool then when senderos done his impression of a sailor!!(all at sea)

  68. gunnerlady… yeah. Like minds and all.. went to confirm who I saw was on the Sendy’s side, few and far between as we are;

I still think he can re capture his consistent form.

Not even as if all the goals at anfeld were Toure’s fault…

  69. sure duke. Only Senderos was at fault that day truly… why dont we blame him for the loss of the invincible s 49 game run while we are at it.

Its not like Toure conceded the pen or anything like that.

Had we not qualified with the game at 2 – 2?

  70. I am looking at the Guardian which says that Arsenal have given the go ahead for a 30 million pound deal for Ade…and that they are going to replace him with R Santa Cruz.

Why not go buy Villa or Benzema with kind of money? We all saw what Ronaldo’s goals did for Man U last year. then only minus with those players would be the wages, which would be just about what Ade is getting with Barca, but I think either would be an upgrade.

  71. Team Spirit,

I know we are in the minority here-supporting Senderos is a risky business:)) I sometimes feel that it’s so unfair to blame all things wrong and sour on Senderos. So people think Kolo is arsenal through and through, oh! so much passion, love, loyalty, etc. But how do they know that for sure? Does Senderos love arsenal less than Kolo does? Or is it that, Oh Sendy love, I don’t need your love cuz you’re a shite! ?

I’m already fed up with the prospect of years 2009 and 2010 involving African players – World cup qualifying+ACN again. That is why I am very skeptical about having YaYa on board and that is why I am tired of people who see Kolo a holy presence.

  72. team spirit

the fact is we can tolerate toure making mistakes because he has been our mr dependable, he has got the status but admittedly is losing his level at the mo. senderos has never got up to the standard and doesnt look like it.

This along with the long list of gaffs is the reason people slag him off when he makes a mistake and toure goes unpunished. I actually have no problem with his attitude but he will never be great or fairly good even! for us to be tighter then a ducks arse at the back we need better cover!!!

  73. I wouldn’t want YaYa even without the ACN and don’t think Wenger would either – didn’t we once take him on trial and turn him down?

Gazzap, I don’t believe Gilberto will be first choice. Apart from anything else, won’t he be in the Olympic team and therefore miss the pre-season, which for Wenger is often a reason for dropping the player altogether until someone gets injured? I just hope Denilson isn’t going to Beijing with him.

I’m a Senderos supporter – mostly. The only thing I can’t stand is when he’s brought on in the 89th minute. I can’t watch. I know he’s going to get in someone’s way and we’ll conceed. It used to happen with Cygan too.

Ah yes, the call for 6 foot 6 bruisers is rearing its ugly head again. All those who think big is beautiful, are you the same people who only last week were raving about Spain? By your logic the beefy Germans – so in your face, sooo Premiership – should have wiped the floor with the midgets. Perhaps you’d like Kuranyi – you can’t fault him for size and directness. It drives me wild the way so many fans were full of praise for Iniesta when they’d written off Hleb as a complete waste of space: Iniesta’s statistical achievement last season: just 4 goals and 4 assists.

OK, so no one thinks we’ll play 4-3-3. Pity, I thought I got everything sorted.

  74. Ade has really handled himslef like a real greedy, bratty, simple person. Many will say ynder the Influence of his agent, I guess being under the influence of other things than drugs can make you behave irrational.

As far as our defence, it has been said that Toure was not bad until after the ANC, meaning that himself and Gallas were good prior to that, so to me it can and has worked. I dont know if anyone has the goal average pre and post the ANC but that should tell the story. As far as Wenger putting Toure straight back in the team, maybe he needed to be rested, but can any of us rationally see oursleves playing Senderous before Toure? I can see Wengers reasoning here, as Toure is a far better defender.

Anyway, who knows who is coming or going but I have a feeling that Arsenal will be unstoppable next season, that what really matters!!!

    God Bless!!!!

  75. California, you clearly have an optimistic disposition if you think Eboue will come good! How, precisely? He’s only got one move, no subtlety, no creativity, he rushes forward and shoots – wide and wastefully – and that’s about it. I remember liking him when he and Ne came on trial from Beveren, and he was playing in midfield at that point, but where’s the improvement – he seems to have gone backwards if anything, which is what worries me most.

But I have to say I feel very sorry for him. I read an interview in the Arsenal mag recently where it was obvious he knew the fans didn’t like him. If it hadn’t been for the support of his team-mates, he implied, he wouldn’t have been able to keep going last season. (Fans who boo players take note.)

And something else that emerged from that interview. He had no idea what Wenger had in mind for him: was he a midfielder or would he return to being back-up right back at some point in the season? I suppose I’ve always had a relatively priviledged working life where that kind of uncertainty about what my job was and what boss expected of me and hoped for me in the future would be unthinkable. Not so with footballers, most of whom apparantly don’t feel even able to ask; they just do what they’re told from day to day and cope with the anxiety as best they can. We condemn them when they behave childishly and greedily but actually the culture in which they work treats them like children – millionaire infants – rather than as adults who’ve got real control over their own careers.

  76. Mia, I have to admit that Eboue even frustrated me by the end of last season. But I think the fans are way to harsh on him; he is very good at unlocking defense with clever little passes. What he hasn’t don much (at all) is score. With Eboue I don’t think it is the lack of moves that his problem. I think they are mostly mental; when things don’t go well for him he gets frustrated and loses it. Likewise when he is tired. It is as if he is a hyperactive child. I’m not sure if those ‘character flaws’ can be tamed in the short playing career of a football player, but evidently Wenger thinks they can.

  77. WENGER SIGNS SQUIRREL SENSATION

Arsene Wenger has signed a grey squirrel, as midfield replacement for Mathieu Flamini. The rodent, known for its great fitness, agility and dribbling skills, was purchased on a free transfer from Nottingham Forest.

“We wanted a midfielder capable of making lung busting runs, hoarding the ball and fooling the opposition”, ethused Wenger.

The squirrel, nicknamed nutty, posed for photographers, eating one of his favourite nuts.

The transfer fee was undisclosed, but rumoured to be peanuts.

  78. true but football can be a cruel game. if you are rubbish, you get dropped or sold. They get paid thousands every week, and we pay their wages. I am not here to massage Eboue’s ego – Arsenal are there to win trophies by putting the best 11 out and I sorry if it upsets him, but Eboue is not that good. For me he is a back up right back – behind the Bac – and nothing more.
how many wingers in the prem league who playerd as many minutes as Eboue in a team as creative as Eboue scored precisely no goals? Its not like his assist rate is particular high and he gives possession away more than other midfielders.

  79. Cool Muppet. So we have our midfield sorted out. Now who will play CB?

  80. Eboue had a kind of breakdown against Everton in the last home game when EVERYTHING went wrong.

His game had disintegrated completely. I`m not surprised he`s unsure where he`ll play either as the experiment of using him RM last season clearly didn`t work.

As I see it we`re still short in midfield in the wide areas.

Eboue & Diaby were the square pegs last season & I don`t think Ramsey or Nasri are genuine wide players, especially with their inexperience in the EPL.

One bloke who would fit the bill & not cost the earth is Arteta at Everton. He can play both sides & cope physically plus he wouldn`t cost the earth & is a good age.

I agree with Mia that we don`t want 6 foot 6 bruisers (Metersarker) but a commanding centre half who attacks the ball in the air & plays percentages is still needed. Senderos is not the answer.

  81. California Gooner,

    How about Arnie ?

  82. Hi Paulie Walnuts,

I thought Arteta’s going back to Spain. Is he not?

I quite like Arteta, but for me, Steven Pienaar is da man. Not sure whether or not he’s good enough for us, but stood out most among 22 (sadly including gunners, sorry!!) on the pitch at Upton park last year.

  83. Nasri can play wide, preferably on the left – he’s left-footed, I think. If he comes.

Two embryos (Ramsey, Coquelln), one person in hospital (Bischoff) and a squirrel. It’s a disgrace.

  84. Maybe not Arteta then, Gunnerlady.

If Nasri comes & plays wide it will be interesting to see how he does on the ugly side of things like tracking back, tackling etc. The bits I`ve seen of him show him to be a ball player which will suit our style but he`ll need to be able to defend a little too.

  85. Paulie

Nasri if or when he signs will give balance to us in the midfield. I believe it will be an excellent signing. It will be almost like having Reyes with the emo.

Gunnerlady – I am not sure putting Gallas ahead of Toure is a good idea. Toure had a collapse of form during and after the ACN last season but as some had pointed of he was a rock for us before and I am not sure Gallas has that consistency in him.
Toure is younger and has a much better recovery pace than Gallas. But as I have said before both are good players but just not when played together. But if I have to choose it will be Toure over Gallas.
I will even venture to say if we donot sign a new CB I would play Sendy with either of them and pray that Sendy evnetually stabilise both in concentration and emotionally.

As for Iniesta 4 goals is better than Hleb – how many goals?

    Up the Arse!!!

  86. Malaysiangunner, according to stats on Wikipedia, Iniesta has scored only 18 goals in 226 games for Barcelona, while Hleb has scored 11 goals in 130 games for Arsenal.

So for Iniesta that’s a ratio of one goal for every 12.5 games
For Hleb it’s a goal for every 11.8 games.

I know goals aren’t the full story and i’m no huge fan of Hleb either, but I just felt like pointing this out.

  87. Good point Blackstock – Hleb helps to grease the wheels of the team, by retaining possession, dribbling the ball into dangerous areas, tracking back to defend and threading through great balls for others. He would look better if more of his killer passes were converted to goals by the receiving player, if he was given half the penalties his trickery in the box should have been given and if he would just take a shot now and then!

  88. OK I concede they may the same type of players but the times I have watch Iniesta he looked good albeit not as often as I have watched Hleb.

Xavi maybe the as Hleb does not want to play for us and in all this debate that has not changed. The only thing now is maybe he can not find a club that will meet AW asking price.

But one piece of what you might call it looks like going with more certainty. I know we will miss him from the football sense but he will not do anything for team spirit and now with that attitude get anywhere near TH 14 skills and effectiveness. May he retire well.

    Up The Arse!!!

  89. Right, if we don’t sign someone this weekend they’re going to miss the plane to pre-season training.

Some ONE? Some five would be more like it. I mean, Wenger said last year we would strengthen with two quality signings. I assumed that would be in addition to replacing the three quality players who are leaving, otherwise the word ’strengthen’ isn’t exactly well chosen. Another traditional season? Looks like it because the only players who will be in Austria are the kids – Ramsey, Barazite, Hoyte, Walcott, etc. Why is Nasri still on holiday? Is he regaining his strength after that exhausting five minutes for France?

I’m not usually this grumpy. And I’m not blaming Wenger for the delays as it’s not in his power to speed up the transfer-window musical chairs. I’m just nervous. The loss of three key players and the fact that whoever we sign isn’t going to get a pre-season – it makes things very difficult.

  90. YW and all parties,

Does anyone know our plans for Vela this season? I had thought he was coming back to play for us but read on Arsenal.com that:

“Mexican whiz kid Carlos signed permanently for Arsenal at the beginning of 2007, but he will continue to play his football on loan in Spain this season.”

    Thanks

  91. Dgob – 2007 was last season – It’s now 2008

  92. Mia, I understand your anxiety, but the players who haven’t been playing for their countries will be training at Shenley from Monday. The team does not leave for Austria until 20th July (after the Barnet friendly) when most of the (uninjured) first team squad will rejoin except possibly Fabregas because he played in the final of Euro 2008.

I’m sure Arsene would have preferred to have everything wrapped up earlier, but sometimes these things are beyond your control. I’m sure the Euro’s have delayed things with certain clubs not ready to sell until they buy or not able to buy until they sell to raise the cash.

  93. Passenal,

I completely agree with the points you’ve made about Hleb above. His assists would definitely rocket if the team was generally much more clinical & efficient in front of goal.

  94. if valencia can keep villa and silva vincente joquin and all other stars while being in the bottom of the table we cand do the same .why sell players bad players or good players good deal or bad deal keep everyone until therir contract runsout .play the hardball wenger

  95. “OK I concede they may the same type of players but the times I have watch Iniesta he looked good albeit not as often as I have watched Hleb.”

Not directed at you, but herein lies the problem. Because we see so much of our own players we are much more aware of their short-comings as well as their strengths. I’m sure if we watched Iniesta or any other player as much we might catch some of their off days too.

  96. THERES NO POST TODAY ! CMON YOGI DONT BECOME LIKE GUNNERBLOG NOW !

  97. Passenal,

Thanks for the update but the shirt numbers that are ascribed would have suggested that these comments are recent. Most importantly, my question is really based on the fact that I was uncertain if I should link the given date of his permanent signing “beginning of 2007″ with the date of the statement concerning his continued loan.

You obviously make that link but are you certain?

  98. Passenal, you nailed it. Seeing our own players every game we tend to notice every mistake they make…and believe that players from other teams are somehow immune to the same. We think that Ade muffs goal chances but other strikers don’t, Hleb is the only attacking midfielder with a shooting-block, and Senderos is the only one-mistake-a-game defender in the league. I am sure that the rest are human too.

  99. Passenal, you’re right, I’m just so used to Barnet being where we get our first glimpse of the new signings, I was imagining it came after Austria, not before. As a fixture it obviously varies a lot. In years without internationals, the whole first team is there – I remember us winning something like 11-1 a few years ago – but this will be a year where it will mainly be kids.

Hard to believe Vela is having another loan season. At this rate he’ll be due for a testimonial before he’s even arrived.

Yes, if Hleb had played a full season with a good finisher like Eduardo, his assist stats would look even better but, as Passenal suggests, his value lies in his ability to keep possession and to thread a ball through gaps where no ball should be able to go. The stats don’t tell the full story. Cesc said that Hleb enabled every player around him to play better. And remember the Liverpool game where Hleb was missing and Toure shouted ‘There’s no one to fucking pass to!’

Santino, I wouldn’t assume Valencia will keep all their players. We may well get a central defender and Silva, and someone – alas not us – is bound to sign Villa. It’s true, though, that Spain is more attractive than England to the more skilful players. Arshavin is reported as saying he’d much prefer somewhere in Spain, Barca ideally, but Chelsea unfortunately seem to be the only ones with the cash.

  100. i think sendy n hleb r good players… i for 1 wldnt like us to loose them but we just need reinforcements… chiellini was the defender that that impressed me the most this euro… he has hr8 talent n he is 23 or something.. dont think will get him tho i hope we do…

whatever happens m just waitin for nxt season so i can tell all manure fans to go fuck themselves…

  101. chris gooner

‘if we bring in Zapata; either Djourou or Senderos will suffer’ . Do we have to care about Arsenal or players? If they’re good why haven’t they been taking their chances all these years especially Senderos?

We must only care about Arsenal winning so any player that will help us win is what we should bring in; others who can’t make it just have to move on.

We’ve not won for so many seasons and we have to do it else Arsene will have to move on too. He’s experimented for years and its time for him to get it right now.

We need a CB but he’s not making any effort to bring in anybody yet what we have are the weakest in the Top 4.

  102. Dgob, yes I am certain Carlos Vela will be playing with Arsenal this season and wearing the number 12 shirt.

  103. 101 comment …big al

  104. what crap is this that we want noble from wet spam. FFS what use is he to a passing team. he is just another clogger.

  105. hey people ive got an idea and please tell me if im totally above my head , we want a central midfield player to partner cesc who is good devensivly , can hit hard but not so accurate , tacles like a maniac and is agressive , has good speed ,can cross , can link up withthe other players well …is crap at ball retention but doesnt allow to many players to pass him either…hmmmm who fits the bill and this may be a shock emaNnuel EBOUE ! cmon wenger show ure magic !

  106. No ARSLAN, i beg to differ on Eboue @CM. He’s notthat type of player. Diaby’s way better suited to backup Gilberto.

Arshavin’s in London eh? Chelsea anyone?

  107. arslan……. i give you…………
    amauri bischoff

  108. Arsene Wenger has admitted Arsenal will probably have to sell their star players every year for nearly another two decades
