Talking Out Of Your Arshavin, Show Us The Colour Of Your Money and more

Andrei Arshavin has rejected the offer of a new contract reportedly worth £3.9m per annum from Zenit St Petersburg which has brought forth some interesting comments from Dennis Lakhter, euphemistically described as a club ’spokesman’,

Arsene Wenger is a cunning fox. In the morning he says Arshavin will play all the time at his club and during the day he says he doubts the capabilities of Andrei to play three games in a row at the highest level

The doubts arose after the semi-final of Euro2008 when he was shackled effectively by the Spanish midfield and defence. Despite this, Zenit claim that Arsenal have been the ‘most active’ of Arshavin’s pursuers. We shall see.

Presumably much will depend on whether or not Adebayor stays or goes. Milan are out of the running, their pot of Euros on the fridge is not quite big enough to house the £35m that Arsenal are said to want according to Rent-A-Quote, Adriano Galliani,

There are continuous requests for Adebayor, but Arsenal are demanding £35m and that is impossible for clubs in Italy. That’s why the top footballers in the world don’t come here anymore. When big clubs like Barcelona and Chelsea arrive it is impossible to compete because they are in a very advantageous fiscal situation

Which is a polite way of saying that the Italians are on a canoeing holiday in a well-known river without any method of propelling themselves forwards when it comes to money

The same is true of Barcelona to a lesser extent, with Berguistain admitting that selling players will fund new purchases although to what extent that is true remains to be seen. Mark Ingla returned to Barcelona having failed with a £24m bid for Adebayor although an improvement to that bid is expected. Hleb meanwhile is in the same boat, refusing to make a written transfer request which makes it easier for Arsenal to pick the Catalan’s pockets on his sale as well.

Adebayor meanwhile has not yet signed a new deal which is believed to be £45k per week, about £75k lower than was mooted as being his desired salary at the weekend. If he read the reports of Cesc’s new £5m flat near Hampstead, he will no doubt be even more assertive in his desire to get a six-figure weekly salary. But hey, when Stephane Courbis says this wrangle is not about money, who are we to disagree other than to ask the question, If it isn’t about money, why was your client continuously banging on about it at the weekend?

Options are running out for Miguel Veloso as Juventus have apparently found that their pot of Euros on the fridge doesn’t contain enough for Xabi Alonso and Veloso. Hardly surprising given that they are the same sort of player. Veloso probably won’t be coming to Arsenal either, purely on the basis that speculation is linking him to the club.

One curious thing that perhaps someone could explain to me is how the hell Kanu is rated the thirteenth best player in the clubs history? I would have said that he was pushing the Top 30 to be honest, somewhere between 49th and 50th best. It is indeed a curious list that has come together. I guess that the top ten will be something like Adams, Henry, Bergkamp, Fabregas, Seaman, Brady, Ljungberg, Vieira, Toure and Theo Walcott as the No.1.

That’s your lot for today. Just a reminder that those who would like their daily dose of Arsenal via email, click here or go to the section on the right entitled, “ACLF by email, Click Below”

’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. I think you’re forgetting that Kanu’s first name is Nwankwo. He’s worth a spot in the top 20 for that alone.

  2. Theo Walcott at No.1, hilarious!

If we could get Arshavin that would ease the pressure in terms of letting Hleb go. Having said that it now sounds like Arshavin will be Roman’s new play-thing.

  3. Although most of us would now be more than happy never to see Mr. Togoloco in our colours again, I wonder whether Arsene has concluded that the best thing he can do is to hold the line – not to accept any price.
Not because Ade is necessarily irreplaceable (and he may not even have the spirit next season if he has to stay), but after the damaging sagas around Diarra, Flamini, Hleb and now Addledbayor, he has no choice. He must close the door on all this slippage.
Yes, it’s a big opportunity gone if we lose this payday, but things have gotten so out of hand that thiis is the only way forward.
While it is important to show the bully buyer clubs that we aren’t a feeder club, it is even more important to show/remind all of our 15 yr olds, and 18 yr olds, and 21 yr olds (and every other ambitious young kid around the world who wants to come to the University of Arsenal Football) that they should not expect to use the club as a stopover until the gravy train arrives, or as an easily discarded launch pad for their monetary moonshot.
Four weeks ago, most people probably felt that Arsene and the Club should tell Milan and Barca to f**k off. Funny how quickly we forget.
I hope that Arsene is finally going to put his foot down. And the higher the number offered, the louder the squash.
You can only hope that Ade gets so pissed off he fires his agent. What chuckling justice that would be.

PS: Great comment on the Arsenal popularity contest YW. Lil’ Theo at No. 1. Brilliant.

  4. I was willing to tell Barca and Milan to f**k off, but if its going to be 30 million quid… I’m all ears.

And hey, I am the guy that makes the decisions around here *cough*

but i agree, all this “I’m leaving” business has to end somewhere – what the hell is ade thinking? what the hell is hleb thinking? what was flamini and diarra thinking? why are these guys keen to leave? why? they know the future is bright don’t they? or is there something else here?

Right, i’m off to buy a can of tomatoes

  5. its not really a top 50 of all Arsenal players. its more a top 40 of wengers players plus 10 really really good ones from the distant past! as you say Kanu should not be that high up. There were probably 13 better players than him in the thirties alone.

The Arshavin story is interesting. Is wenger bluffing or is Lakhter bullshi**ing? I would not have thought we needed another winger even if Hleb goes. walcotts emergence, plus rosicky getting better and the new Nasri along with Vela and Eboue should cover it. wenger has said Vela is a striker. to me that suggests if Ade goes then wenger wont buy a striker but may buy another winger and thats where Arshavin could come in.

the vast majority of gooners have been continually worried about our defensive situation and there seems to be very little of any substance linking us with defensive type players. Birshoff says he’s a reserve. are we really relying on Gilberto and the Toure/Gallas partnership again? its a worry with all these teams just below us spending shed loads.

  6. This business of Bischoff saying that he is a reserve. Is it possible that he is just being humble, coming into a new situation with a great, Cesc-like attitude. As others have said, why would AW add to the reserves?

  7. I agree that this is one time Arsene may ignore the money in favour of prinicple.

Turning down huge offers — and United are doing with Ronaldo despite his stated desire to leave — is the fastest way to draw a line in the sand and say, “No, we’re a big club, a major force in Europe, and moreover a club we want to keep together because it’s closing in on greatness.”

If we keep shifting the model each year — take the money and bring in yet another striker — eventually we DO get the tag of “selling club” and the exciting young team we see developing year to year can never be held together.

I think Arsene will hold the line, keep the key components of his team in place — while getting more dynamic play from the likes of Walcott and Bendtner, plus adding ready-made Arsenal stars in waiting like Vela and Nasri.

It’s time to stick to our guns (no pun intended).

  8. gazzap

I am not overly concerned about the teams outside of the top four at the moment. They may well be spending shedloads but not on players who will propel them into those positions. City spending £19m is a joke on them – CSKA held them to ransom just as we are doing with Adebayor.

The only time you can judge how wisely they have spent is at the end of the season. Arsene should not be panicked into buying if the players are, in his opinion, not going to improve the squad.

    YW

  9. I too was baffled by Kanu’s ranking as I was with many of the others to be honest, but that is by the by. I have heard very little news about berbatov recently, i know addy had a good season and is obviously top notch, but his lack of brains both on and off the pitch has got 2 make most gooners plea for barca to come in and buy him for the proposed 35mill. That would give us enough to take berba from spurs and send them down to the championship no? i personally am a big fan of intelligent players, im not asking for an MBA in Bio Physics, but a striker demanding over 100k a week has got to understand the offside rule…. if he is to stay patty rice has got to sit him down and get out the old salt and pepper!

  10. been a Nigerian , I will not make any comment concerning the Kanu’s thing , but Walcot at Number one is ridiculous , I think they should let us the fans to vote and decide for our selves..

    http://soccerfanbase.com

  11. For what it’s worth I don’t think the top 50 players has been too bad so far….. Bearing in mind how rubbish these sorts of things usually work out. Kanu at number 13? Nothing wrong with that at all. Also plenty of pre- wenger players in there (Williams/Talbot/Rice/Wilson/Merson/Rocky/Dixon/Nutty/Sunderland etc etc etc)

As for Anelka though – who voted for him???

Anyway – back to the serious business of trying to second guess what’s happening with our club : -)

  12. Good post Yogi!!

Well, The arsenal.com poll is a farce. The day ANELKA came 15 places ahead of ALEX JAMES was the day when every shred of credibility was stripped from that poll. Its a joke YOGI!!! My only hope now is that TONY gets NO. 1 or else we are in danger of turning into a laughing stock!!!

By the way YOGI, As you said Mark ingla has returned but did Arsenal have talks with Ingla and consider his offer or was it a straight refusal by arsenal with no negotiations???

  13. The Arse.com poll was based on a voting system – but if you take into account the average age of the people who are going to be inclined to go on to the website and vote – the results are of little suprise.

You forget that the majority of Arse fans these days dont even know life before Arsene!

On a seperate note – have you all seen the pics of the new Away Kit knocking about?

Its a cool pic – it has some -players from the 89 team – Smudger, Merse, Mickey Thomas chatting in the changing room with the current squad – and it even has a No. 7 Rocastle shirt hanging up…

IMO – its really nice – they have based it on the 89 away kit as a 20th Anniversary reminder of Anfield… Nice touch…

  14. Matt, do you have the link for that pic?

  15. the poll who have been more credible had it been that the club made it in such a way that only ticket holders are allowed to Vote.

    http://soccerfanbase.com

  16. Here is the link DREW 10!!

    http://the-cannon.com/2008/07/02/new-away-kit-poster/

  17. I have to agree with MATT!!

The new kit is really nice. I was alway of the belief that Arsenal had the best home kit and the worst away kit in the world. I never ever liked the yellow kit, but this is really nice, the colours have been distributed very well maybe its the dark blue sleeves that give it an “alternate arsenal” look!!!

If only NIKE hadn’t made a fiasco of the home kit!!

  18. Well YOGI!

Marc overmars is no. 12 in the poll!!

I am a fan of him but as you said he shouldnt be that high up the list!!!

  19. I’m afraid you’ll be seriously disappointed not to see Walcott and Toure in the Top 10. The criteria for the nominees was past players, so existing squad members not eligible

  20. Arsenal signing Arshavin is just a dream. If Arsenal offered £20m for him the mad Russian would offer £40m.Remember when Arsenal were interested in Wright-Phillips the forces of evil offered £21m which was way too high.

As for Kanu the 13th greatest gunner-What a joke he wasnt even a regular starter.

  21. Cheers for posting the link Naga – saved me the trouble… :-)

  22. THANK GOODNESS!!!

I am extremely glad that villa is staying at Valencia and now it seems Arshravin seems to have no chance of joining Arsenal. They are the least of our problems!!

I hope all this talk by wenger, is a smoke screen for us to sneak a defender which would be awesome!!

  23. I agree with the Budgie, anything anyone else offers Roman will pay more – and i’m sure Arsene knows that and is trying push the price up by appearing interested but also preparing his explanation for why he didnt sign Arshavin…

  24. There`s still eight weeks to go before the end of the transfer deadline but I`d like our spending to be done earlier rather than later in order for the new lads to be involved in pre-season.

That goes for selling players too – the Cashley / Gallas move overshadowed the start of the season two years ago & we started very slowly possibly because of it.

Kanu at 13 ? Gilles Grimandi has to be in the top ten now.

  25. That lanky prick can go f*&k himself.
Arsenal saved his flaging career. He is as good as gone, ok he scored the second most amount of goals in the prem. but i could have with the service he gets. I never have rated him or hleb. They are assuming every arsenal supporter from season ticket holder to armchair supporter who buys the occasional kit as stupid as they are.
The only reason wenger says they are staying is to put the shits up them or push there price up. Can you imagine the boo’s they going to get stepping out on the turf first day of the season. If i ever see them kissing the badge i love i will personally run on to the pitch and rip of there shirt. sorry i just needed to get that of my chest b4 i go to church.

  26. what does Ade’s agent mean when he says Arsenal need to show they want the player but its not about money.
what does he want, a big cuddle?

Of course its about money. Dont get me wrong I am disappointed with Ade but Arsene is absolutely right to get tough on the players. if they sign a 4 year deal then they should be happy to stay for those 4 years on that money. Now as it happens Arsenal have made a very good improved offer of £45k per week. He is simply not worth much more. maybe £50k, but certainly not £120k. Wenger should stick to his guns and if Ade wants to sulk then fine, I am sure Nik Bendtner will gladly take his place in the team. I trust Arsene to deal with this because he is a very clever manager, way ahead of most agents and players in the grey matter.

24 year old 30 goal strikers ARE worth over £25m these days. whatever we think about that being a lot of money, that is what the market value is for that kind of player. If wenger has to replace him with say Santa Cruz who may cost £15m, then we have only made £10m. If santa cruz is even just a 5% worse player than Ade then it gets us nowhere. I’d rather have the slightly better player on the pitch than the £10m in the bank.

  27. GAZZAP!!

I agree with you mate. This is damage limitation from ade and his agent, pure and simple!! which is to be expected after those comments ade made. They are realising that the move may not go through, and is trying to deflect the wrath of the supporters in case arsene keeps him for next season.

I hope arsene plays hardball and get the 30 MILLION, which I think would be a great bargain. The time is right to sell him. ade is overated and his price will plummet if we keep him another season without anything much being contributed to arsenal. Remember henry, we could have got a WORLD RECORD, if we had sold him after the UCL final, david dein revealed that. It was the same with viera, we got much less because he stayed an extra season.

I disagree with you on Santa cruz though. I think he and bentner will share the holding role very well (without any egos) through the long season and since arsene will take no less than 30 million (which is absolutely right) it means about 15-17 million in the bank that could perhaps remedy our main concern of the DEFENCE.

  28. naga, u really believe Nik has no ego?

I cant even take ur word for that…

Nik and Ego fit just fine; whether he can be as rude as his ade and his agent has been, i cannot tell; that i think is lack of character rather than mere ego!

  29. I dont think we really need santa cruz even if Ade goes… Nik is a player in that mould and what of BNacer from the reserves?

  30. Yes I am beginning to think if we do get £30m from the sale of Ade, how good would it be to go out and sign Zapata and Veloso at the prices their clubs are asking? Man I’d be so happy with that. Vela is a striker and with eduardo coming back earlier than expected I think these players could do a job – with the first choice of RVP and Bendtner. I think wenger likes Bendtner a lot so it may happen.
BTW if we do sign Zapata, Gallas should go. He will not sit on the bench for anyone. then the issue of captaincy is solved as Toure will inherit it.
It wont matter that we only get a few million for Gallas, its the quality of the starting 11 that is important now.

  31. Only factor differing Ade and Nik is the way both handle off field antics…. they are more or less the same… but Nik won’t rant about the way ade has done.

  32. TEAM SPIRIT!!

Yes yes.. Point taken! I shouldn’t have put it that way. What I meant was that they simply dont like each other. They are uncomfortable with each other and ade’s apology after “slapgate” was deeply unconvincing. They seem to be concious of the history between them while they are playing which stifles BOTH of them.

Yes I agree that nikki does have a bit of overconfidence (andy gray will vouch for that). But to be fair to him, SO FAR he hasnt undermined the club with his attitude whatsoever. I think “slapgate” was more of ade’s fault than bentners.

That said maybe its because I rate bentner, He does not jump into “I want to leave” mode everytime aanother club shows interest in him. We have seen that with the interest from chelsea and bayern, He seems to be willing to wait for his chance. I defend him because he has not done anything to undermine the club SO FAR, despite his overconfident nature. That is all I am saying!!!

  33. gazzap i really hope we get zapata

  34. Ade`s previous suggests he`s burnt his bridges with us.

He can be extremely disruptive when he wants to be so I can see no way back for him.

He`d expect us still to pay him what his contract said if he`d been sh*te all season or injured for that matter.

Martin `Tiny` Taylor got the wrong man !

Gazzap is right in that £25M is the going price for a 24 yr old 30 goal a season striker but I`d bank on Arsene getting a better replacement for much less than that & it wouldn`t be Santa Cruz.

They would also know the offside rule.

  35. Bendtner def has an ego problem, you can see it everytime he steps on the pitch. In a way its a good thing because hes always looking to make a point to people and the fans. Thats why hes scored some important goals for us, he can be a big player for us i believe.

For the holding role, we dont need Santa Cruz… with Bendtner & RvP there we can use them along with Eduardo, Vela if needed, or Walcott. But these players are exactly ready to be starting every game, we need another striker if Ade gets axed. Doesnt have to be a target man, a complete striker will do Wenger ;)

  36. SPOT ON!! GAZZAP!!

Well about ZAPATA, udinese is willing to let him go for 15 million. Now I have to say I dont understand why we are going to pay the same amount for Samir”the phantom” nasri.

    TEAM SPIRIT!!

I think we need santa cruz because he is nothing flashy but does his job well. I think he will get atleast 20-25 goals for us if we get him. The reason I say this is because:

1)we dont know what mental or physical shape dudu will be in!!

    2) RVP, as much as I like him, may be called to fulfil his Hospital engagements anytime

    3) Bentner will need a bit of time to bed into his role, He is 20 for goodness sake!!

    GUNNER4LIFE!!!

You are absolutely right, the difference is that Bentner has not undermned the club!!

  37. By the way GAZZAP!!

Is this Veloso a holding midfielder in the flamini mould??

  38. GAZZAP AND NAGA agree with you both, how can anyone cheer Egobayor next season after hes put his foot in his mouth so many times, and what will be the reaction whens hes offside ten times then misses a sitter. Lets hope that Laporta is so anxious to get a confidence vote that he gives AFC the price they want and we end this saga. I also would like Gallas to be sold he just doesnt fit in with Toure, I think Song is being groomed to take his place, anyways hes over 30 which at AFC is retirement age.

  39. Gazzapp if its true EGO was only getting 35k how is it that our wage bill is 3 million less than MANU. Who have Ronaldo, Rooney, Ferdinand on 120k, and Tevez, Carrick and Hargeaves not far behind?

  40. We do not even know the whole story about this Ade thing….

Some of the quotes are just too odd to add up; maybe am the ertenal optimist but i think some of them are made up.

He may yet surprise us all and sack his agent!

  41. For me, we should refrain from booing a player wearing the shirt… At best ignore him… If you distabilize him by booing him, you are only affecting your team… Your loss in the long run even if it gives you joy in the short run.

Gunners, ignore him I say; even if he scores 4 in a match, don’t sing his name; silence can send as clear a message, if not clearance than any noises made

  42. Sol, not sure when those fogures were published; they probarbly includede Henry and Freddie’s wages.

Am quite sure Ade was on less than 40k…

  43. I dont know how Hleb or Adebayor will feel to be playing in an Arsenal shirt once again but i bet its not gonna be a comfortable or easy feeling.

We shouldnt sympathise with them at all, if booing is what they will get, its all they deserved for treating our club like this. Hleb Rubbished his reports so maybe he will get less stick, but Adebayors comments about thinking of retirement are ludacris and have insulted many fans like myself. I will not look at him as an Arsenal man unless something is done about this.

  44. Team spirit!!

No, those figures were confirmed by Peter hill wood this year!!!

  45. The strange promotion of Kanu to 13th in the list has reminded me of why his form deteriorated so much that he became a bit player. After a great season, he spent months arguing about a new contract and more money and his form dipped. That is likely to happen with Adebayor, who only seems to interested in how much money he can get.

Let him go, the quicker the better.

  46. For me, I believe that the days of a player being arsenal forever ala ADAMS is over. We will never see the likes of rodders again.

That said, I think if a player is in two minds, they should be strong and decisive whether they say YES or NO and not take the fans for a ride by beating around the bush or trying to get underhand favours. This is precisely why I still support Flamini and continue to wish him well. As players they must behave in a professional and proper way whilst they are at the club whatever the circumstances may be.

As supporters we must also respect a players decision when the player has not broken any promises to the club like Flamini. But At the same time I completely support the stance taken by CHRISGOONA. Ade and hlebs behavior has been shameful and unforgivable and deserves all the boos they get!!!

  47. so, go ahead and boo them when they are about to score for arsenal versus man u anad let man u win and see who feels worse in the end.

If they remain Arsenal players, at best ignore them! It is childish to say the least and quite counter productive to boo your own players no matter the rationale you come up with for it!

I know we are all upset with them now, but as always, the interest of the club is bigger than any individual and that should also include hte fans not just the players or manager

  48. jjg, your assessment of kanu and his loss of form is wrong me thinks

He at no time quarreled over a new contract.

He was offered a pay drop to remain at arsenal and chose to rather finish his current contract and moved on. I think it was all quite amicably done to the best of my knowledge. I think AW still rated him but more as a substitute.

I think he used to have stamina issues due to his heart surgery; just cos Adebayor looks like him does not mean they have the same problems.

Kanu is one the more humble Nigerian professional players

  49. Bendtner has an ego the size of Africa. He isn’t well liked by the rest of the squad, simple to tell from their body language on the pitch.

Also I seem to remember him saying that when he came back from Birmingham that unless he was guaranteed first team footy he would go somewhere where he would.

Personally I think he has the potential to be better than Adebayor, especially in the air and I think a Bendtner and RVP partnership looks very tasty.

If someone steps in with £30m for Ade, forget the talk of squad stability we are looking at another Anelka scenario, sell him and but a few quality players with the dosh and the good times will be back.

  50. Team Spirit, I agree with your point. I would never boo any player in our kit. I just would not sing his name or cheer him.

People complained about a short squad last season but are now willing to lose Gallas, Hleb and Ade (Flamini already gone) surely that would weaken us to much.

  51. Team Spirit

I am not one for booing, but i dont think when they touch the ball the fans in the stands are going to have smiles on their faces. There is just a whole bitter taste to it all and i think it will be hard to take away.

Cesc, Clichy, Toure, Gilberto are all players that commit to the club in the face of confusion or speculation linking them away. Why?? because these players respect the fans of Arsenal and have a love for the club, Adebayor love affair with Arsenal is bollox, the guy couldnt care less if we fnished 4th last season if he could trade it for another 5 goals.

  52. Now… now TEAM SPIRIT!!

I am sure the others get your point. It is valid. Now when we celebrate a goal as arsenal fans. We celebrate it because its AN ARSENAL GOAL. Its not mainly because ade or anyone scores it. We celebrate it because its an arsenal goal, no matter who scores it.

The players even the best of them are after all plying their trade. I agree with you that booing our own players is counter-productive, but you cannot blame the fans who atleast expect their millionaire superstars, the be respectful towards the club they love, from having a bad taste in the mouth for a player like ade when he has done something like he has done recently!!! dont you think???

  53. team spirit

How can Wenger even think about playing Helb or Ade after they have shit on the club this summer.I dont ever want to see these pair of greedy bastards back at AG ever again. They are both the same as Cashley Cole

  54. ha ha ha…

“just cos Adebayor looks like him does not mean they have the same problems.”

Thats a good one TEAM SPIRIT!!

  55. I am not missing them either cos I firmly believe in respect for club and team mates and fans and all… The thing i like most about arsenal is …. can u guess?… TEAM SPIRIT. LOL

So, while i feel for the fans who have to watch them play life, grit your teeth and ignore them end of.

You do not have to boo at all as far as they remain arsenal players!

I wonder what options you think AW has even if they are relegated to the bench and then squad begins to tire, as the season goes on, should they not be played? In the end, it is about professionally going about your business as one has rightly pointed out about Flamini.

In the end, it is that Arsenal do well.

  56. Are they really the same as Cole?

They are not exactly Arsenal Born and Bred; Hleb to me may just be fed up with being one of the most fouled players in the Pl with little ref protection and may not necessarily be pursuing money.

Ade has nad many quotes attributed to him and even if he is nearer Cole in teams of pursuing money, I still dont think anyone compares to Cole in the level of betrayal

  57. Cole.. is the perfect example of betrayal to your club. Adebayor is just a greedy git at the end of the day, Hleb was looking was an easier footballing culture and more dosh too. Im not saying they have no feelings for the club, but Cole is/was Arsenal through n through, these players have their own interests ahead of the clubs.

  58. I understand where Hleb is coming from. he saw his teammate’s leg broken and suffered 2 horrific tackles himself, which only left him mildly injured, luckily. he thinks his luck might run out. his style of play in the prem draws fouls, simple as that.
He also does not like London and I THINK his wife wants to move back to Germany, same as him. he wants his football to be respected but teams in England would rather kick lumps. If we can get £12m+ then I wish him well.
Ade is just being a greedy bastard -pure and simple. I dont like it but I wont boo any player. I dont like Eboue but I never boo him.
Ade will realise his songs have dried up. players like this could be Arsenal legends but they fuck it up and want to move at the first sign of anything counter to their ridiculous demands.

Bendtner makes better partnerships with his strike partners but I just dont feel he is quite as an effective player as Ade (yet). There were too many game where Bendtner went missing away from home. when Ade came on, there was an instant impact. Ade’s impact goes beyond just scoring goals, he gets the whole team working better. Thats why losing Ade might be a problem.

  59. Losing Ade will be a big problem.. gazzap

we are not only replacing goals, but we will have to replace the loss of strength, stamini, energy, workrate and many other attributes that gives Adebayor those goals in the 1st place. It will be hard to replace him and i dont think Wenger will let him go. Its a similar scenario to the Henry case, im not comparing Ade & Henry, but they both brought alot to the team and when these kind of players are moved on you cant really go out and find an exact replacement.

  60. GAZZAP!!!

What you say about hleb maybe right, but there is no excuse surely for his indecisiveness about whether to stay or not!! Maybe we will respect his decision but he is taking too much time that is the problem which is sticking the club’s preparation in the mud. negative or positive, he owes a decision soon!!

About Ade, well we simply need to evolve our style like we did when Henry left, we adapted to ade’s style. if ade leaves we need to adapt to the NEW or the REMAINING striker’s style!!

  61. No excuse for eithers conduct, just trying to get their actions in perspective especially as someone compared them to Cole.

Ade has less excuse than Hleb who would actually be better appreciated in spain as even the supposedly lower teams enjoy playing with flair.

I am quite sure its not that easy to decide to move, there are lots of other considerations including family members so just let them be as far as the transfer window has not closed and also the fact of their moving is not even in their hands… its with the club. If the club does not sanction a move for them, they cant just be off

As AW said, only flamini had a choice from the word go.

  62. at least from january

  63. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIRxxurh0xg

Everytime i watch this video, I am convinced Arshavin is the perfect man to replace Hleb in a 4-4-1-1 formation. He is absolute class, few assists in this vid are blinding.

  64. About our wage bills i think I hear that we pay our younger players more than the others and so there is a closer gap in salaries between the squad players and the first teamers i think…

  65. Hleb indecisive ? That sums him up on the pitch too. Well , maybe. I`m not really sure.

Booing is counterproductive. It`s always great to hear boos at their own team from Anfield, WHL , OT etc but I don`t want that happening at The Emirates.

Arshavin looks great on those youtube clips but they`re from the Russian league mainly & I don`t see him coming to us anyway because of his age & the reputed fee involved

  66. Whenever I’m about to get carried away for a player after watching a YouTube clip, I keep reminding myself of that —- even Eboue looks super in Youtube clips!!

  67. ADEBAYOR PROBE

Astronomers are scratching their heads over a puzzling non-discovery, an enormous hole in Adebayor’s brain measuring nearly a billion light-years across.

There really is nothing to the void, which is empty of both normal matter such as stars, galaxies, and gas, and the mysterious, unseen “dark matter” that astronomers detect by its gravitational pull.

While earlier studies have shown holes in the large-scale fabric of the cosmos, this new discovery dwarfs them all.

“Not only has no one ever found a void this big, but we never even expected to find one this size,” said John Maple

“This is 1,000 times the volume of what we sort of expected to see in terms of a typical void,” he said.

“It’s not clear that we have the right word yet … This is too much of a surprise.”

The astronomers reported their findings in a paper accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers have known for years that, on large scales, the universe has voids largely empty of matter.

However, most of these voids are much smaller than the new one. “What we’ve found is not normal,” Williams said.

The astronomers drew their conclusion by studying data from the temporal lobes of Adebayor, a project that imaged the entire brain using the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope.

“We already knew there was something different about this spot in the brain,” Rudnick said.

The agent of Adebayor declined to comment.

  68. Its not like wenger to buy a player when they are at the height of their value, and epsecially when they are late 20’s. Personally I dont see wenger buying him as much as he rates him. I understand he tried to buy Arshavin many years ago but was blocked. I really dont see wenger going back for him – once wenger loses out on a player he normally moves on. whats more I dont think we need a winger, well not as much as other positions anyhow.

  69. Muppet…

Keep up the good work LOL.

Defo a large hole there if all is to be believed

  70. Very true, Muppet. Yes, I think we should bend our principles in the case of Ade and sell him as fast as we can. I shall certainly sleep easier once I know Laporta or Abramovich has signed the cheque. I might even sell Bendtner to Milan if the offer is good. He’s clearly not a replacement for Ade – no pace, no power, nothing like the same energy – so he seems a bit like a luxury striker who we’d have to change our style to accommodate, with the additional drawback that many of his team-mates seem to deeply dislike him.

How can Cesc’s new flat possibly cost 5m, even if it is in leafy Hampstead? A house maybe, but a flat? Blimey you could buy a sixth of Ade for 5m – e.g. the big hole in his head. Nice to know Cesc is putting down expensive roots, though, as everything I’ve ever read about him suggests that up to now he has been almost impossibly frugal – his idea of an expensive day out being a shopping outing with his girlfriend in Zara. Not that I’ve anything against Zara – I go there myself but I’m unusually stingy and poor.

Hard to believe Arshavin will end up anywhere but Chelsea. The only slim ray of hope is that his priority is not money but a manager who’ll let him play the way he likes best – in a free role behind the main striker. Dunno how Chelsea will line up next season, but he could have a free role with us – if we had the pacy main striker, that is. Eduardo? Vela? Both are unknown quantities for the moment, so the more I think about Villa, the more I like the idea. Strong, quick and an excellent finisher who Cesc wants to come – I don’t see any drawbacks, and pleasing Cesc (who appears to loathe Bendtner) feels like a very good plan. I wouldn’t believe the stuff about him staying at Valencia: when players say that they’re usually just finishing packing, and Valencia surely haven’t the money to keep him?

  71. Muppet Did you know that Egobayor has offered to sell his brain on E.Bay for 40 million pounds, it is a very rare brain as it has never been used

  72. Mia is that the same girl friend that Ego beat up 18 months ago and was arrested and then bailed out?

  73. Two Arsenal Ladies left for Chel$ki, I’m assuming it’s for money not for trophies??

Just to prove that some players are more persuaded by money than by anything else. These players are the Muppets in the Rich Man’s Game….Sorry Muppet no bun intended.

  74. In domestic terms, the Arsenal Ladies team are at the centre of the football universe, so to see two of our better players defect to Stamford Bridge suggests that they’ve been made financial offers that they couldn’t refuse.

Anita Asante & Lianne Sanderson will definitely be missed.

  75. Mia

In your mind and others every Arsenal player loathe Bendtner. Who told you and how can you prove that? The way some fans dislike Bendtner is beyond belief.

This is a young man who scored 8 goals in his first season mainly from the bench. The fans lover Ade scored 4 goals in his fisrt half season (having been signed in January)and had only 12 in his second season playing a major part of the team. His 30 goals came in his third season.

Comparatively therefore Bendtner has done better in his first season than Ade in his first and second season.

Unlike Ade, some of is goals were very important goals. His goals against Pool at home; Spurs at home and Villa at home were very remarkable goals that saved the games.

Again, unlike Ade, he celebrates his goals with his assist and don’t beat his chest.

    Give me a break Mia.

  76. Sol, I don’t know but I imagine so as I think they’ve been together for a couple of years. I hadn’t heard that Ade beat her up. Whatever is that lunatic going to do next? Presumably Cesc hushed it up for Arsenal’s sake? He’s the nearest thing to a red-and-white angel.

Gazzap, unless we’ve signed a couple of wingers while I was having a nap I think we’re in even more desperate straits than this time last year! Apart from Walcott who is there?

Hleb – maybe, but there’s still a high chance he’ll leave if he possibly can.
Rosicky – he has been injury-prone since day one, and the vagueness of the ailment that kept him out all last season, the difficulty in diagnosing it and the time he’s needing to recover from surgery all look to me to be very bad signs. I hope I’m wrong, but I think we’d be foolish to count on him.
Eboue – no need to expand.
Diaby and Denilson – neither are real wingers and both will probably play in central midfield.
Eduardo and Van P – again, only wingers in a dire emergency and there are question marks over the fitness (mental or physical) of them both.
Traore – maybe but he’s untried.
    Ramsey – the same.

Even if we sometimes play 4-3-3 with two holding midfielders (which I think we should) and do away with the need for wingers as such, we surely need to buy one? My first choice would be Silva.

Where did you read that Wenger had once tried to buy Arshavin? I think I heard an interview during the Euros in which he said he WISHED he’d seen him years ago, which implies he’s a relatively new discovery? I wouldn’t be surprised if we did make a move for him back in April – there were certainly rumours that we had and were told to wait till after the Euros – but now with the price, the Abramovich factor, together with his age, seems unlikely we’ll even try to compete.

Yawn, yawn. Are we going to be muttering like this about Silva and Zaparta and Huntelaar and Veloso for another three weeks? I prophesy we’ll sign a Romanian. The reason for this is that we don’t know any.

  77. Howard, it is well known that Bendtner is seen as arrogant and aloof by his teammates. He is also immensely talented. and Mia is right that he does not replace Ade. I think he will be more Berbatov — very skilled, very aware, but somewhat lazy at times– if he gets that good. what Ade’s pace and power do is stretch defenses and give space to the midfielders. That was what Henry did with speed, as well. Torres’ demolition of the German defense was an exhibit of how effective a striker like that can be. When the defenders could not handle them alone, space opened up for the midfield to operate, and the midfielders are incredible at moving the ball. that is how Arsenal function at their best as well. With out Ade, I think a lot of that space will disappear as teams shorten the field.

  78. Mia and Solgooner I think you are talking at cross purposes – Cesc did not beat up his girlfriend, and neither is there any proof that Ade beat up his girlfriend either – there was an incident to which police were called, but anything else is just gossip.

I really don’t understand where this myth that Bendtner is hated by his team mates comes from. I think the lack of celebrations are related to the circumstances under which Bendtner scored some of his goals i.e. to get us a draw from a losing position. The team were not in the mood to over celebrate on those occasions and often were in a hurry to just get on with the game so they could try for a winner. He certainly got mobbed by his team mates when he scored the winner against spurs!

Also, if you ever see any behind the scenes pictures, he is always laughing and joking with his team mates and he appeared on the Cesc Fabregas show, which would hardly happen if there was the level of dislike between them, which some seem to feel. If anything, the problem is that it was his first season as part of the first team and as Wenger himself stated it was as much up to him to fit in as for his team mates to make him welcome. Nik is not an easy going character and when he is not playing, he has no interest in football, so I can see that he might not be close with everyone, but I think their relationships are good enough. I’m sure we all have different degrees of relationship with work colleagues, but it doesn’t stop us doing our jobs just because we’re not best mates with them all.

  79. California Gooner

Bendtner is aloof so he’s arrogant? Is that your measure of arrogance? Anybody aloof is now arrogant? Looking at the statistcs, is Bendtner not better than Ade in his first and second season?

Why put pressure on Bendtner when the chap is only 20?

  80. Howard what are you on about? Bendtner is not English….I hope you know that. :)

  81. G4E

You always misunderstand me. Learn to read the import of my posts.

  82. California, I agree. There’s no doubt Bendtner has many virtues – the accuracy of his long passes and his headers, for instance – and, as I said yesterday, I’d much prefer him to Santa Cruz. But the disappearance of space could be a real problem next season unless we develop a new way of playing. Much of Walcott’s potency will be lost if there isn’t a striker pacy enough to get on the end of his crosses, and the same – hopefully – will be true of Traore if we use him left midfield as he’s even faster than Walcott and a good crosser as well. Is it likely – or desirable – that our style will be less pace-based to accommodate Bendtner? That’s why I described him as a luxury striker, excellent to bring on, but not a replacement for Ade. So, California, what would you do? Sell him if the offer is good enough and we need the cash for a replacement for Ade? Or keep him and – perhaps – try to alter our style? Obviously if money isn’t an issue we should hang on, but I guess that depends on whom Wenger is trying to buy.

Passenal, I don’t think Sol and I are talking at cross-purposes – neither of us think Cesc beat up anyone. As to the truth of the rumour,
I don’t have an opinion one way or the other – the first I’d heard of it was Sol’s post.

On Bendtner’s falling out with at least some of the team – in particular Cesc, Ade, Hleb and Flam – I just don’t buy your view that it had nothing to do with Bendtner himself, they simply didn’t feel like celebrating any goals in those games. Something had happened betwen them, or one of them, and Bendtner. What we don’t know. But it must have been serious because I can’t remember a single other instance of a goal-scorer being so blatantly cold-shouldered. Can you? Name other games, with other scorers, where the team didn’t celebrate. If Cesc has since gone out of his way to befriend Bendtner and repair the damage, it further confirms what an extraordinarily nice and positive guy he is – a red-and-white angel, as I said above.

  83. Mia

You don’t really know what you’re talking about Bendtner being loathed by his mates. It’s all conjectures and your imagination. If someone should be hated in the team then it should rather the cocky Ade.

Beating his chest when he scores
    Not acknowledging his assist
Don’t celebrate with others when they score
Disagreeing often with team mates on the field of play for not passng to him and so forth.

I’m told Barca is bringing in 30 million take-it-or-leave-it offer. Arsene should take it and run with it. He can’t score 30 goals next season as his recent misbehaviour will not endear him to his teammates next season.

He’s a destabilising cunt that we don’t need next season.

  84. Bendtner is not well liked in the Danish national team either so there must be something there for fans to pick up on not just AFC but Danish nationals too.

Man i say sell Ade and Hleb as they have both made it quite clear that they don’t want to be with us next term with the money we could get Messi (who is making noises about wanting to play in italy, i think because inter are after him) and Guiza/Pavlechenko/a target man with a higher goal to chance ratio.

But I am not AW but if these two stay what will that do to dressing room harmony?

AW talks about team spirit well that will be hard to conjure if two of your starting players minds are elsewhere.

On the booing thing, i don’t condone it but would discourage it for Ade, its funny because i went from respecting him to hating him in a very short space of time following the shite he has said.

Finally I think Aaron Ramsey will play more 1st team football than many believe in his 1st season.

YW – keep up the good work i love reading your blog some true fans here and some jokers but the mix is good and Muppet adds something different with his inspired remarks!!!

  85. Of to bed now thank god its Friday tomorrow.

  86. Howard, I don’t think that aloof and arrogant are the same thing. but most people do perceive aloof people as being do to a sense of superiority. in bendtner’s case, who knows? Maybe he is just shy. no idea. however, I have just plenty that his teammates don’t like him.

But, Mia (above), I would definitely not sell him. He could be awesome. He just won’t be Ade. The fact is, Ade aside, the rest of our front-line is either injured (Eduardo), oft-injured (V.Persie) or unproven (the rest). So hold onto them and see who rises to the top.

And yes, Villa would be awesome, and yes, making Cesc happy is icing on the rest of the reasons he would be a great buy. But I can only see that happening if we really do sell Ade.

  87. whoops, that didn’t make sense. Howard, I think arrogance is one source of aloofness, and people often assume that it is the cause. Bendtner was making demands before he had done anything, which is annoying enough (but perhaps no more than Ade running his mouth). Players don’t have to like each other to play well together, or at least everybody doesn’t have to like everybody, they just have to trust each other on the pitch. But there is no doubt in my mind that he is intensely disliked.

  88. California Gooner and anyone else, how on earth can you describe a player that you only get to see during a football game as aloof? do you seriously expect him to start laughing around with his team mates during the game, starting with Gallas at the back then Fabregas in the middle and finally give Ade a nice hug so that you can truly know that he is a nice chap. In any case who said players have to be nice? this is my impression of the young Dane: When he came back from his loan spell, he had a few outspoken moments here and there. my take on this was that he came having just scored 12 goals and helping that team that i dont want to name to the premiership. he also believes highly in his own ability which in itself isnt a bad thing. from day one, he expected to be able to score for arsenal and also to be recognized instantly by his team mates. if you have watched Bendtner during the last games of the season, particularly Derby, Everton and Sunderland, you will realize that he has matured somewhat and seems to understand more about team play…also watch the friendly between Denmark and Holland at the end of last season and you will understand what am saying. can i also just say that Arsene thrives in developing players whose character is somewhat misunderstood? – like RVP in 04…i mean what was he described as? a selfish showy brat? a rapist?
Give young Bendtner a chance, will you?

  89. Sanderson is the same player that scored 51 times last time??? Man she was the mainstay of this Arsenal ladies team. Chelsea are sucking down the football out of every team and are getting away with it without any actions from FIFA.

Its rumored scolari would be getting 250 mill war chest.

    seeeshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

Bendtner doesn’t have the pace that is for sure….ALthough he is very strong and can play the traditional role of a target man very well, he doesn’t give the extra that Ade gives. But his link up play is better than Ade for sure.

It all depends on how the team around them plays…. they can be equally effective if the team plays the right way. Bendtner will be always better at helping create goals and will always have more assists if given a run of games like Ade was given.

    =====================
    Arshavin….

That link of the vid i posted i agree most of the play was from russian league…… but the link up play that they play with is very very similar to us…. great movements off the ball, 1-2 touch football.

And Arshavin seems to have that sixth sense about the positioning of other players and tends to track players runs all around him so well…. i tell you he would be an instant hit at emirates…. he can play his best with us.

And every time he gets the ball there is only one thing on his mind …. to play for his team to score… he is not the one who would be content with an inch perfect pass which wasn’t finished…

For me He is the man.

  90. Siver Gunner

‘Bendtner is not well liked in Danish national team either’

Since when did you begin to monitor the Danish press about Bendtner? I like Bendtner and so I’ve been following all stories about him and I want to tell you that you, Mia and others are spreading false rumours about Nik.

Nik in his first season is better than Ade in his first and second seasons. Arsene will prefer to sell arrogant Ade rather than Nik as he will be the better striker and loyal in the long term for the club.

Get off the back of the young man now.

  91. “Name other games, with other scorers, where the team didn’t celebrate. ”

When Kolo scored the equalizer against Middlesborough – while he ran to the crowd to celebrate, no one celebrated with him they all rushed back to re-start the game.

  92. it was the last minute of extra time in which he scored i think.

  93. “Get off the back of the young man now.”

Coming from a man continues a bizarre campaign of hatred over half of the team in the last year that is pretty funny.

Remember how you talked about Almunia Howard?

    How about Senderos?

    Eboue?

Adebayor – even when he was scoring and not acting like a prat.

You really think people forget the things you say?

You are a hypocrite Howard, there ain’t much worse than that.

  94. Josef K

O course all those players I talked about are still not good.

Almunia? Below Arsenal quality, he’s 7th in Spain so why should a top class team like arsenal make him No. 1?

Senderos and Eboue are both useless, I insist.

Ade is cocky and I’ve given the reasons he is; that has even been reinforced by his recent outbursts. Santa Cruz or even Martins can do a better job playing for the Arsenal.

If we keep Ade, we might regret it as he can’t deliver more than 15 premiership goals next season. Bendtner will score not less than 15 goals this season if given chances.

  95. Howard,

I think the import of your posts is fairly clear. Appreciation for players seems to increase with their proximity to you: the centre and benchmark of your little island.

Thank goodness that some sanity reigns. Boo our players (Ade, Hleb or anyone wearing the shirt)? That is where the negativity of armchair managers culminates. Blogs are starting to p..s me off.

  96. dgob, u can also use same blogs to good effect and actually tell them the good reasosn why they should not boo.

people can react in a short term way in anger, but after some time of reflection, most tend to see the light

  97. team spirit,

I know you’re right but honestly… I just hope there is sufficient reflection and certain contributors to blogs look a little closer at what they perceive the fundamental role of a “supporter” to be – in good or bad times!
