Adebayor Flip Flops For Sale

Emmanuel Adebayor stepped into familiar territory yesterday, a path well-trodden by Thierry Henry and Jose Antonio Reyes before him. Publicly declaring that you intend to see out the remainder of your contract, commenting that it is a ‘good’ deal to boot, seems likely to stifle debate about your future. Under pressure of questioning little more than an hour later, performing a volte face is not generally considered to be a good PR move. In response to prompting from a Sky Sports News reporter, the Togolese international confirmed that he will decide his future next week. Nobody will be surprised if the public pronouncement that follows his consultations moves the situation no further forward. Or if he leaves. Or if he stays. No-one can say for certain what the player wants although there is plenty of speculation that he will be cast to the winds with Arsene’s blessing.

Looking at responses to his predicament, if you can call it that, elicits a roughly 65-35% split in his favour with regard to his abilities and his future. Most people would say that £25m is good money for which a decent replacement can be secured and the club should seriously consider letting him go. It is a path fraught with obvious dangers, namely getting the replacement in both body and goal. Had Eduardo been fit, or a genuine return date before the season started be attainable, then perhaps a youthful approach could have been taken. If Adebayor goes, a proven goalscorer will be needed.

Reports this week suggested that Eduardo would be back for August but that was journalistic opinion with no basis in medical fact. In any case, there are as many mental questions as physical to be answered by the Croat. Quite simply, if a new striker is required, Arsene cannot rely on this option. Eduardo needs time to regain his touch. Effectively, he is restarting his Arsenal career. He might be more settled this time around, more fluent in the language but how will he react to the first 50-50 or 40-60 challenge? He needs to come through that phase before judgements can be made.

There is also the question of loyalty. Two decades ago, there was a common trait of loyalty to your employer, something that the Premier League’s evolution has diminshed. Whilst winning trophies is important, money is not far behind. No longer is a testimonial considered necessary for the top echelon of players for moneys earned from one match are incrementally smaller to their overall wealth than in previous years. It is not the English players who are responsible for this change in loyalty either. Plenty of English players have moved or are requesting moves to pastures new within relatively short spells at clubs. Some might have come through the ranks but that makes little or no difference any longer.

Loyalties to the club manifest themselves most readily in the attitude of supporters. The game now is more geared towards ‘win now at any cost’, an attitude not prevalent as recently as the mid-90s. Success spoils people and whilst there is nothing wrong in wanting the silverware, is that all there is to supporting a team now? In Adebayor’s case, before sounding off at him for greed or ego, consider whether or not you have been loyal to him. No player is above criticism nor when they play badly should they be praised effusively.

Adebayor scored thirty goals last season and is still criticised for not scoring more, as if he is solely to blame for the team’s collapse in the title run-in or exit from the Champions League. If scoring treble the amount that you expected him to is not enough, what is and why be angry about the player leaving? So what if he has an ego. If he did not have a healthy self-belief, he would not have made the top level. Strikers thrive on confidence; all of them have big egos. Some hide it behind creosoting the fence, some put it out in the open. Get over it. We all have egos, we are all as guilty of ’showing off’ when our talents.

A final observation. Consider the fact that football is his career, his job. In principle, what is the fundamental difference between a brickie and footballer? Leave aside the salaries and there is none. Both are services that people pay for. You pay for a house, you pay for a footballer. We expect loyalty on what basis? The club that we love? Forget that; the club we love is their employer. The loyalty we crave is born from a bygone era when players had summer jobs because their salaries dropped in the close season.

Personally, I am torn as to whether or not him leaving is good for the club. The money being touted as a fee is substantial enough for Arsene to be able to buy a suitable replacement. As is always the case, there is a ‘but’ coming and a fairly significant one at that. Signing any new player requires a bedding in period even if they have played in the country already and it places pressure on those already at the club, unless the newcomer settles rapidly. There is a question of the wisdom of letting him go having just had the season in front of goal that he did. At the moment, none of the other forwards will score thirty goals next season. With a goalshy midfield, does it make sense from the playing perspective for him to be released?

It is not that I want Adebayor to leave nor is it a case that I am ‘not bothered’ either way, just a sense of realism. The mobility of the workforce means that every three to five years, a team will be overhauled for the most part. That is the way of the world. Arsenal Football Club is bigger than any player and will outlast all of them.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. GOODBY ADE”ONE HOUR ONLY”BAYOR!!!

Well you can say anything about the press publishing crap. Ade may be staying or going. but THAT IS NOT THE POINT ANYMORE. The question is whether he is 100% coommitted to the club or not?? THE ANSWER IS NO!!!

my fellow gunners have a point of saying ther is media crap, but this has come from the horses mouth, whether he leaves or stays. One thing is beyond questio: ADE IS NOT 100% COMMITTED TO ARSENAL! That is a stonewall truth whether anyone likes it or not!!!!

I have repeatedly said here on this blog that this ade story is not just medis crap. That there was something going on!! BUT WHO LISTENS TO ME!!!

    anyway cheers!!!

  2. All my best wishes to DUDU!!

He is class, and the fact that HE WILL PLAY football, let alone this season is a joyous miracle!!!

Yes, THE GREATEST QUESTION is: Will he be the same as before the injury???

But whatever happens I am a Dudu fan thats for sure!!!

  3. SHAMELESS IS AS SHAMELESS DOES!!

“But if he sells me, and what they are saying in the newspapers is right, they are going to get €50m (£39.5m), maybe €60m for me and they bought me for €10m. So everyone is getting benefits. They have to make a good decision and I have to make a good decision as well.”

We get it ade, DONT PUSH IT!!!!

  4. naga you were right mate, now he(adeBUYmemor) is saying its not about the money and five minutes later he will see”what arsenals reply is next week” on his pay rise the thruth is he is a prick and i want rid of him i pay good money to watch matches and want rid of this prat who i know scored 24 league goals i think with 6 v fucking derby!! his spurs goal was great but remember utd away he missed 5 GREAT chances and then got away with handling the ball it was a fluke im telling you and have been saying it for a while bentdner is a better player and look at the goals he scored and he started fuck all i say take the 25/30 million and drive him to the airport he is a arsehole as he was with monaco and is with togo

  5. It is all typically Arsenal and to be fair I’m almost growing into finding it mildly entertaining or maybe that it is bemusement I am feeling!

I would guess Ade wants to stay, I’ve said this before but the reality is that if Ade is not given assurances that he is 100% wanted, he will start to consider the options open to him.

It would seem to me, that Wenger is beginning to find the option of replacing him, considering his current market value, a positive change for the side.

We know Wenger is an E’to admirer and whether that is the hint as Milan have suggested, Arsenal’s preferred destination for Ade is Barca is as yet unclear but has been previously mentioned.

For what it is worth, I would prefer him to stay, I also feel E’to has a few years in his prime left and would recapture his best form, with a move to a new club revitalising him.

Basically though, I agree with Yogi, the current state of the squad means any replacement were Ade to depart, would need to be as proven as goalscorers be. At least in Wenger’s mind.

  6. I totally agree with Yogi on his assessment of Ade’s situation and players’ club loyalty issues. It’s a shame how sports and football has become, but in reality every thing is measured by money right now. Principals, values, loyalty, and honesty are diminishing and a club like Arsenal & Arsene are fighting an uphill battle and swimming against a huge tide.

If Ade sees himself being sold as a good bargain for all sides, so be it…..if we get good money for him, we can buy someone else who is looking to prove himself just as we bought Ade out of his mess three years ago. Maybe it’s good for someone like Walcott (Howard must be dancing in the dark) to step up his game and claim the Local Hero status….who knows?

  7. I can’t help but find the whole process funny, or forget that at the end of last season Ade was laready getting a bit too big for his boots. In the last few games there were many complaints about passes not heading his way and the effort levels definately dropped. This whole scenario was just waiting to happen.

Arsenal must find in his replacement if/when he goes not just the goals but the workrate of earlier in the season, because we have also lost Flaminis energy and that has not been replaced. All the flair in the world will not work without the hard work.

I do wonder at the end of the day, whether these players realise who actually pays their wages, do they ever watch the news? Do they not realise that money is tight for many people and buying tickets is already expensive because of their costs? Maybe someone could explain it to them-we support you on the pitch, please don’t rip us off much more. Yes they live an exhalted life, but the need to not completely loose sight of the real world.

  8. I don’t think Adeego has the brains to realise what a fool he is making of himself. The sooner this clown is offloaded the better. I thought the was superb 2006/07 season, lead the line tirelessly chasing down everything. 2007/08 he seamed to model himself on Henry, drifting out wide (when we needed him central) the tireless running had stopped and he took over Henry’s ego without any of his class. We are bigger than a mug like him who thinks he is bigger than the club and now even believes he could be worth up to £60m. And right on cue, as soon as there is a situation to exploit up pops orange man and jabba.

  9. Totally agree with your assessment Yogi. Nothing more can reasonably be said until this little saga plays itself out.

No doubt we will miss Ade’s all round contribution and familiarity with the team’s playing style, but Wenger has been in this position before and we got an upgrade from Anelka to Henry, so I’m not too worried.

It might just be worth remembering that you might get a core of players who stay with the club for 5+ years, but there will also be plenty who just past through briefly. Just appreciate the contribution they made while they were here and move on when they do.

  10. Sorry, pass not past, in the post above!

  11. The only thing that is important in this story is HOW Wenger spends the money. I think he’ll go and if he does Arsene HAS to spend it on a player like Villa or Huntelar. If he wants to maintain an aerial presence, then he could buy the Dutchman and Crouch. I don’t care if he stays or goes but I do care about what happens afterwards.

  12. I’m not too bothered about his greed or ego, but let’s be honest, he does seem to be terminally stupid. If he had any sense whatsoever he’d just shut the f*** up. Surely he can’t possibly believe that he’s worth £60 million or that he’s calling the shots on his future when he has three years to run on his contract. And does he really want to leave for a club we played off the pitch last year and isn’t even in the Champion’s League next season?

Remember the dim guy at school who could barely string a coherent sentence together, but was supernaturally good at sport?

  13. Yogi, well said.
we talk of loyalty to club what of club loyal to player?
which of Arsene’s buys has ended is career in Arsenal and why is that?
When will the rebuilding of the team end?
cos if you really step back and take a good look key players have been leaving the club for a long time now and its over money or extention on thier stay.
We cant keep heaping the blame the players.

  14. ok… I would hate to see Ade leave… but I’m trying to look at it from a players point of view… he is earning 30k per week comparing to 110k Rooney, 110k Owen and 91k Drogba… don’t you think he deserves at least 60k per week considering how much he is contributing right now. I think Arsenal should improved his contract and not lose him like Flamini. It is not always about greed, rather just put yourself in his shoes, and remember you will only play another 7/8 yrs…

  15. Did anyone else notice the “Team Adebayor” t-shirt that our man with the Hollywood grin was wearing at the Adidas event/news conference in Vienna, yesterday?

And referring to himself in the third person, too!

  16. iBO,

Totally agree. Ade has said very little, but has hinted he simply wants an improved contract.

He knows he could get 80 grand a week elsewhere, why would he not expect to be paid what the current market dictates. The last I checked his passport said born in Togo not bloody North London. The loyalty commodity we speak of is completely unapplicable to the lad raised in Africa, moulded in France.

He wants to stay and earn a good wedge, the question is now. Do we or more importantly the boss want him to stay? Or does the long term vision no longer include his contribution on the pitch but more so what we can get for the lad?

  17. Agreed re: loyalty issues, Yogi. Sensible as always.

  18. iBO – I agree 30k is well below his comparable peers, but what he/his agent have done since the seasons end will mean (in my opinion) AW won’t offer him a penny more. That will be Wenger’s way of gently pushing him out of the club.

  19. Adebayor is unrecognisable from the gangly, raw , unconvincing player he was when he arrived little over two years ago.

By adding goals to his game last year he put himself in the top bracket of EPL strikers & therefore became a target for clubs like Barca & Milan who think Arsenal are a selling club.

At his rate of progress Ade could become one of the best in the world within the next 2/3 years & for that reason I would like him to stay. Moving away may well stunt that growth.

He doesn`t strike me as the most intelligent bloke I`ve ever heard & sure, he has an ego , but most great players , especially strikers , are the same.

I noticed the third person stuff on yesterdays interview & cringed too. It`s a sure sign of being about to disappear up his own backside.

If Arsenal want to keep him they will HAVE to improve on 30K a week & I`m sure they will but if he goes there will be a big hole to fill as he was our only consistent season long striker last year & a likewise replacement will be very difficult to find.

The media will no doubt link us with plenty – Huntelaar / Benzema / Eto`o / Guiza / Crouch maybe even Berbatov . ha ha

  20. totally agree with yogi…i think ade should just leave since his heart is NOt with arsenal, wat is important now is his replacement

  21. Fact remains and no one here is raising it. Any forward playing consistently upfront for Arsenal will score 30 odd goals.
What we should look at it the total number of goals a team scores.
We have been top 2 for the past decade. Football fans should understand that. AW every two years give improving players better deals so that at 27/28 they are earning big money.
Cashley refussed 55k\week if had accepted that he would by now be on near £70k\week. Maybe even more as captain.
That message I am sure the club pass on to players. Some get it others don’t.

Big club destroy players. Look at Ronaldhino, Rivaldo, Eto, Deco. None of these players are past it. Compare that to DB10 and Henry while at Arsenal. These players go to club where the desire to win mind share of fans force clubs to look for big names every two years. Does anyone think Wenger will be looking to Dispose of Ronaldhino at 27?

  22. The trouble is that if we let him go even a proven goal scorer will take time to adjust to our playing style even if they are familiar with the PL.

Arsene is not interested in players who can only score goals. They have to be able to make an all round contribution to the general team play.

  23. Players should look at the treatment of Robhino and snieder at Madrid. It is crazy.

I personally will be happy for him to remain or go.
Either way our overall goal haul at the end of the season will not be impacted.

How many clamoured for Wenger to buy Anelka or some other big named player to replace Henry?

I will be happy with Walcott, RVP, Bendtner, Vela and Eduardo next season.

I infact believe that, Ade now thinks he is in the big time he’s performance will drop.

  24. Shango,

If any striker playing consistently upfront for Arsenal would score 30 odd goals a season, why did we get so excited when Henry acheived it?

And why in a very dominant Man United side did Rooney not?

It’s not that clear or that simple!

  25. Passenal :
It is the loss of players like Cesc and Clichy that people should worry about.
Frankly for Adebayou I will not bat an eye lid if he stays or go.
The desire to have a “proven goal scorer”. discounts quickly team play and structure in goals.

  26. Danny:
Do you know how many goals the team has scored under Wenger every season? Better still how many goals did we score last season?

I agree it is not simple, but there is an oversimplification here. Ade gives us more than goals and if he lives, the team will have to be adjusted to cope. T

The point I am making, if we had two Adebayor’s playing for us the total goal scored by the team will not be up by 30.

The goals Ade scored is a product of team play not Solo efforts.

On ManU if Ronaldo leaves, players like Rooney, Nani and co will eventually score more. As if the team loose his 40 odd goals completely they will potentiall be out of the top 4.

  27. My concern would be his motivation if he stays.

A big part, indeed the most important part in my view, of Adebayors contribution to the side is his willingness to run and work for the team.

If he is not 100% committed would he maintain this?

That said, to me this smells of an agent having had a word in his ear between statements.

His first statement, if left as it was would no doubt weaken his bargaining position as far as wage negotiation goes.

I still think he will stay, but as stated above – will he maintain his level of performance.

Could be an opportunity for the guy whose ego exceeds all others.

  28. Perhaps the explanation is this.

Player gives an interview where he states his possibly genuine desire to stay at club.

Agent rings and says “What are you doing – we are negotiating a new deal for you with the club next week. We need them to think you might leave if we don’t get a good deal”

Player tells another journalist that he is of course open to other offers.

For player and club please insert almost any combination.

  29. There are very few players that are so unique that will make it in every team the are put in.

I firmly believe that in this current generation of EPL players. It is the like of players like Cesc, Rooney, Clichy. I will not quickly add Ronaldo in that list. Simply because the team has to be adjusted to use his strengths not the other way around.
Players like Cesc, Rooney and Clichy are wonderfull team players.

The reward for best players have always looked to serve the individual in a team and this is flawed.

  30. Shango,

I think that is fair comment! Teams often change shape and new candidates finish moves off all of a sudden.

I am really just saying, that scoring 30 goals plus in a season is an acheivement, otherwise the great Henry would have scored 50 plus.

I also would not be panicked if he left, but his contribution has been strong and should be considered as such.

I do see what you mean about certain players at the big clubs, but consider Zidane, Kaka, Ronaldinho in his prime, Figo, Maldini.

Wenger undoubtedly gets the best from players, but big players go to big clubs. The aim is to be one of those big clubs, in fairness selling big players does not seem to meet that criteria. However, if there is a bigger plan at work, fair enough.

  31. “Perhaps the explanation is this.

Player gives an interview where he states his possibly genuine desire to stay at club.

Agent rings and says “What are you doing – we are negotiating a new deal for you with the club next week. We need them to think you might leave if we don’t get a good deal”

Player tells another journalist that he is of course open to other offers.”

To be honest, that was my initial reaction to the situation. A bit naive perhaps, but not entirely beyond the realm of possibility.

  32. Excellent post that puts things into perspective Yogi; Keep it up.
It is part of a Manager’s brief these days to readily and ably react to such inevitable churning; Arsene, I think, is more than capable, market conditions notwithstanding, of managing the situation.
    Interesting times all said.

  33. Why do we have to put up with our players being knobheads?

General rule of thumb is “if they wanna go, let them go”

I suppose the one decent thing he has done is talk up his transfer fee. So please, Ade, Hleb and anyone else that doesn’t like the weather or the food or the colour of our kit, just pack up, talk your price up and fuck off. But do remember to talk your price up… 60m Euros for Ade.. Ha ha ha he he he a rub of the hands and a David Villa, lovely.

  34. I suspect that part of the reason that Arsene is apparently remaining so calm – regarding both Hleb & Adebayor – is that he knows that Arsenal is largely in control of what may happen, and that if players are sold, he already has lists of suitable replacements just waiting to be kicked into gear.

Arsene plans so far ahead that I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t already identified the player who he believes may replace Fabregas when the day arrives – hopefully not for many years to come – when he too leaves the club to return to Spain.

  35. Yeh!
Ade can go. It’s time AW brought in a proven striker. Also, he (AW) needs to be careful; Cesc recently made clear that he would like David Villa signed. This may have given a warning to ADE to leave(as Cesc may not be very happy playing as our main striker).
I think AW needs to wake up. It’s time to stop buying cheap players who won’t last more than three seasons.
We have to rebuild every new season for losing players. Money may come in from the sale, but we are increasingly left behind by our Top 4 rivals in trophy winning department.

  36. @AusGunner – That was my first reaction. If I were his agent I would have been furious with his initial statements.

In any case Ade has made a great contribution to our team, if he was to leave for the kind if figures quoted it would not bother me.

And comenters have mentioned, Arsenal is the party control of the situation.

  37. Why is arseblog so irritable? I suppose it’s the loyalty thing that makes fans see red, but honestly, he – and most of us – feel no loyalty whatsoever to players we don’t particularly like. When you think how some players have been scapegoated by the fans – Gilberto (for years), Hleb (especially by arseblog), Cygan, Senderos, Eboue, Song (again especially by arseblog for no reason whatsoever that I could make out beyond the fact that he, arseblog, didn’t care for Song’s uncle… ) – we’ve no right to demand unconditional loyalty, only hard work, which both Ade and Hleb have given us.

That said, if Ade insists on being paid stupid wages and tries to hold us to ransom, then we should call his bluff and sell him to the highest bidder. He may never be worth 25 million again, and if he thinks he should be paid more than Cesc, Clichy or Sagna he’s deluded. I’m not blaming him for trying it on with the wages, probably at the agent’s prompting, just saying we shouldn’t give in.

  38. “Loyalties to the club manifest themselves most readily in the attitude of supporters. The game now is more geared towards ‘win now at any cost’, an attitude not prevalent as recently as the mid-90s. Success spoils people and whilst there is nothing wrong in wanting the silverware, is that all there is to supporting a team now?”

An excellent statement in a very perspective article, YG.

Each of us have our priorities about what we want from our football club. For me I it is first to be proud of the club & the performances of the team. Top silverware is just a bonus that an awful lot of genuine fans never get anywhere seeing.

The stature of Arsenal demands that we have, in Cesc’s words, “a competitive team”. I believe we will have that with or without Ade.

All we learnt yesterday was that there does indeed appear to be something going on. At this stage it is unfair to critise Ade for his attitude, because we know nothing of substance.

Loyalty of players has not really changed since the abolition of the minimum wage.

In general it is all a matter of who wants you enough. It has always been about money but because there is so much involved now, all the nasty sharks (agents) are digging deep, thus creating more distortion.

If Ade goes, it must suite Arsenal. I think it will be harder to replace his energy rather than his goals. That was what separated Bentner & him last season.

  39. Mia:
So so true. I read Arseblog everyday.. Love his sense of humour. But your are absolutely right about the way he attack our players.

What dissapoints me personally, is when we give a Wenger credit for identifying and developing Vieira, Cesc and Henry. And with the same breadth declare others like Senderos, Song, etc as worthless.

  40. Flint McCullough:
I agree with your assessment that his energy will be what we will miss the most. If he does go.
But I believe Walcotts Pace and possibly superior technical ability + Bendtner’s technical superiority will go a long way to address that balance.
Ade and\or his agent are certainly overvalueing his contribution.
Like Arsene one’s said of Henry. Arsenal has been good for him. Barcelona and the media read it different. That Henry made Arsenal.

  41. Shango,

I sense your excitement with the emerging youngsters.

I like you believe we can find something different in our attacking play next year, namely a confident Theo’s searing pace.

Wenger’s key job will be to carefully keep together a select bunch of youngsters who can define the team and it’s future. In that we agree.

  42. Do these fans ever listen to themselves? In one breath they demand loyalty, love for the club, blah, blah, blah. In the next they declare Ade to be egotistic, having no intelligence, brain-dead, and for good measure a lazy, good for nothing. It seems these fans and Bloggers (with rare exceptions, Yogi being among them) demand less of themselves than they demand from players. According to this patronizing, paternalistic attitude, Ade should be simply happy with being an Arsenal player at 30K per week. After all he was nothing but a raw gangly striker from Togo, rescued from the French league. He can’t be worth 60K per week or 80K per week. Save that for Michael Owen or Rooney. That is one hell of a way to keep in the fold a striker who worked his butt off, leading the line, scoring 30 goals for the season and who at 24 years old can only get better.
Keep talking Mr 20%, keep talking!

  43. today’s post in pretty weird tone…

no doubt footballers have every right to want to earn more and more. And i never expected nor did arsene for ade to score as many as he did…. he is and always be a player of kanu’s mould.

But its highly improbable that he will be able to reproduce the goals coming season, so when he says that his departure will be good for arsenal and himself he might be right. I don’t think we will have any problems if he goes or stays….. completely agree with you on that one.

But goal shy midfield????? may be last year when rosicky was injured and fabregas is not a naturally attacking midfielder….. he creates chances… but needs his “flank men”. If one of them is hleb well we wont get goals for sure…. but if we have choices lke nasri, vela, walcott, silva possibly and hopefully RVP and rosicky…. the goal shy midfield turns into a fearsome prospect.

  44. Coming to his attitude i think he speaks his heart when he says it was unthinkable for him to play in italy or spain when he was in togo. Now since he has got his chance he wants to take it….or get the same recognition, adulation and wages here. He is just not the guy to “LEAD” a club’s attack…. that attitude is infectious and dampening.

Since now that he has raised himself to godhood in his own mind he will never step down to playing 2nd fiddle to anyone wenger brings in…. so in the best interests of all parties he should go. That’s my take on this…its got to end soon since we have to be settled before the season starts.

Next season will be the turning point in the club’s history…..win all or lose all

  45. adebayor must go. Just delivered for 1 season and starts thinking he’s a superstar, well he’s not! Wenger must take the money & will b able 2 get some1 who’ll score the same amount of goals at the least for a lower price!
Adebayor is simply not that special & we r not even sure if his goal tally this season is not a fluke, i mean i would even say the consistent Yakubu is a better striker than him!

  46. This was the most enjoyable ACLF blog for a long long time. Very good write-up.

  47. Flint

“Each of us have our priorities about what we want from our football club. For me I it is first to be proud of the club & the performances of the team. Top silverware is just a bonus that an awful lot of genuine fans never get anywhere seeing.”

This is so true, I would rather finish forth with the Arsenal of my heart, a Grimandi rather than an Anelka, Clichy over cashley, and the board over jabba and orange man.

The laws of how clubs are run will change, where will that leave the other of the ‘big 4′.

Every year of AW’s reign the club have grown both in reputation and status, not all those years have brought silverware.

If we are a selling club it is down to Wenger’s astuteness, and something i applaud, I would rather be a selling club than a buying club, thats basic economics. I don’t care for big time charlies, let them go to chavski.

Adeego and Pleb are everything I hate about the game and totally unArsenal.

  48. I still believe that Ade will stay. Then again I’m worried if he doesn’t. 30 goals, let it be the first season of 30 but I’d prefer to start next season with a player who’s done that allready rather than spend big money to a striker who nobody knows if he’s capable to do the same.

We’ve been saying a long time that this group of players will win something at some point but if Ade goes it might be that we end up starting next season without three main players of that group mentined. And the worst is that those three players are all from starting eleven. One with 30 goals and other (allredy gone) perhaps the most important player from last season in Mathieu Flamini.

    Good one Yogi’s Warrior!

  49. I really hope Ade goes.
    He is simply replaceable.
He is not Cesc, Clichy, and Sagna.
He does not appreciate those who lay the ball for him to score.
Do you remember Man city away?
when Ade scored the first goal following Sagna’s excellent play, Ade being Ade, he ran towards away supperters, while Cesc ran towards Sagna and Sagna jumped on Cesc with joy.

After the season was over, I’ve been watching the dvds of previous seasons and I was really disgusted with Ade in 2006-2007 season review. He does not care thanks to who he had the chance to score the goal. After scoring goal, all he did was running towards Henry and doing that ridiculous dance.

I understand that being a bit arrogant and selfish is part of the package of all the strikers. But it is simply too much with Ade. He ain’t that good. He ain’t certainly as good as he thinks he is.

    So Ade, just go.

  50. Someone else made the point, but it is worth repeating, the key person whether Ade goes or stay is Arsene Wenger. Of course this simple fact may cause the Le Grovers to burst a blood vessel, but for now Wenger makes the footballing decisions. There is a quote from him that ultimately his goal is a competitive team; this it is commonly assumed means a team who can challenge among the top three. As it now stands, in my opinion the key players in the Arsene system are Cesc and Ade. Take either of them out of the team and we have got to change our system. Without Ade, we do not have the physically domineering front-man who pre-occupies central defenders particularly, who not only opens up spaces for players coming from deep and wide but can also do the finishing. No other player on the roster can do it; we had the usual air-bags talking up Bendtner until it became apparent that it is was all hype rather than substance. Unless Wenger can identify a suitable replacement I doubt Ade is going anywhere this year.

  51. Hear hear Yogi, nice column.

  52. It seems many of those who were shouting loudest that Ade was not good enough to play for Arsenal and should be sold are now the very same people who are slagging him off for saying he might be leaving.

You just can’t please some people.

  53. Mia, you made some good points earlier, but I disagree with the notion that Sagna should be paid more than Ade, he’s only been with us for one season after all!

I think Ade does deserve a pay raise, to an extent, but nowhere near as high as some of the figures being bandied about in the press.

Also, gunnerlady, you’re reading waaaay too much in to goal celebrations.

Incidentally, some reports suggest that Wenger isn’t that reluctant to let him go. One reason might be that he sees him to blame for the whole Bendtner bust up last season. I didn’t think much of that, thought it was just one of those things, but in that case Bendtner was without question the victim (although many arsenal blogs/commenters would’ve had you believe that he was to blame for the whole incident), and maybe Wenger sees more in Bendtner or found Adebayor’s behaviour to be especially unpalletable? I’m hypothesising of course but it’s just something that came to me.

I still feel that Ade will stay and I’ll be glad if he does.

  54. I believe that even without Ade being replaced, we are going to be a better side next season. It should be remembered that ade’s first season was nowhere compared to Bendtner’s, and even this season Bendtner has been more efficient/clinical of the two so it is very possible that he could step up come next season. We will miss the workrate, but that could be adjusted for easily. I will take brains(footy) over hardwork any day. Our best player(arguably) Cesc runs the show while not appearing to put in too much effort. Our resident Assassin Eduardo grabs goals with probably less than a third of Ade’s efforts. If we keep our front men healthy, the departures of Hleb and Ade will be nothing but a blessing for us especially with the change we can get for them. The departure of Garry Lewin could prove more important than that of Ade, Hleb and Flamini combined. I have always wondered why our injuries took longer than any other team for similar kinds of injuries. Maybe a different approach to treatment and rehabilitation would mean something.

  55. I usually agree, but not so much today, even though I am in a total minority here is why.

We ask about loyalty, I always heard Ade compliment the fact how the fans are behind him. So maybe some some have criticized him above and beyond but others have been in his corner and really love him as a player. I for one think he has missed some real easy chances but still see the potential of greatness. I just dont agree with this assessment, so what if someone does something you dont like you should just be an idiot. At the end of the day, doing the right thing is up to an individual.

Refering to his ego, there is no problem with believing in yourself and being confident but pride and swell headidness is a different story. I have seen Pele and Zidane play and I do not remember them with this showing off with their talents as you call it. Pride comes before a fall.

Being a footballer to me is just not like any other job. These guys sign contracts no? there is no contract without mutual agreement. So what Ade is saying is, I gave you thirty Goals (1 season), so now the contract I agreed to has been breached. If a bricker signs a contract for a certain fee and he goes over his bugdet, would he be able to go back, regardless of how good a job he did. Anyway, Ade is a striker and is supposed to score. I am not against him getting a raise but not in this manner. Would you rather, build a house in rain, snow, sun, sleet or play a “game” you love and get paid about a thousand times more.

Please, let us not liken Ade to Drogba or Rooney, there is no comparison as yet.

What I glean from this article is that the whole sport is about getting as much money as possible, its unethical and unprincipled so we should not be upset with any of the players in light of this knowledge. No, this is why we should be upset because without the fans there would be no football and we should always speak up for righteousness as we demand it from ourselves.

We should not condemn anyone but nothing can be wrong with being upset. There will be no change if all we do as fans is accept this total lack of respect.

    God Bless!

  56. One more thing, this trophy glory culture is really silly as only one team can win a particular trophy. And really it is not a mindset of all fans but only the teams placed at the top of the table yearly. I mean no other team outside the top for is really under this type of pressure from their fans. It is a joy for me to watch Arsenal play, because it is the “beautuful game” in its truest sense.

    Be Blessed!!!

  57. Lc theres no guarantee that buying a “proven goal scorer” (Whatever that means) lets say David Villa ,for 30 million wont make him want to leave. He could have a blinder of a season attract the attention of “top clubs” (of which we r in the top 5 financially) and be offered £45million by Real Madrid n leave.

As we are all speculating here. I would be dissapointed if Ade leaves as this season he has shown great potential and silenced many of his critics who said he couldnt carry the burden of TH14 leaving. I dont think he has done himself any favours but my gut instincts are that he wishes to stay but changed his statement on the advice of his agent to get an improved deal and I mean if he was earning £35K at Arsenal and the dead weights at West ham and Newscastle Smith, Viduka et al were earning 70k who could blame him. So why not spin ayarn about other clubs being after him supported by very public protestations by said clubs is playing pure hardball.

Whatever happens this club has survived worse and I think Wenger in his infinfite wisdom is always one step ahead of the game.

  58. G4L, do you think he has to play hard ball in order to get a raise? Did he ask for a raise and was denied? I just would like to know if there is a reason for doing this.

Please remember Ade agreed to this contract because he had not produced really until last season. I would say Viduka has been a decent player througout his career and more consistant than Ade, so if he is getting 70K at the tailend of his career what is wrong with that.

  59. The summer is so painful, I’m forced to read filth from our blogs on an hourly basis, so desperate I am for news. Our fans leave me totally and utterly depressed, Villa and Veloso for Hleb and Adebayor – how our fans manage to excite themselves with the stinkingly average, I’ll never know. Thankfully, being in possesion of my own mind, and a pair of eyes, it’s a position I’ll never need to adapt. It’s good to find some solace in this sane blog.

I’m pretty much with you Yogi regards Adebayor, if they’re talking £25m, you may have to think we may be getting the better side of the deal, but I recognise he’s become a tremendous and important player for us, and it would be major upheaval. I’d certainly rather lose Van Persie than Adebayor. What I don’t want, is for us to lose Hleb and Adebayor, if we do, next season is a write-off. To lose three (Flamini included) starting members of our first 11 from last season would be a remarkable failure, and for me, would cement our place as a smaller club in europe. I can’t see how we could recover from that position infact, how could we ever seriously hope to persuade Fabregas, or any other future star, to stay with us. Everyone would know the deal, you come to Arsenal to become a player, then you move on to a big club. We would become a known feeder club for the biggest teams in europe, rather than endeavouring to become one of the biggest clubs in europe ourselves, which is what we all hoped we would become. Financially we are, so there’s some mismanagement somewhere along the line.

Sure we’ve lost players before, but with the exception of Anelka, we could all take pride in the fact that Wenger had only let the players go that he wanted to. That’s most definetely not true of Flamini, Hleb or Adebayor. These are players at their physical peak. For me, if we lose all these players, it will be the beginning of the end for both Wenger and the Arsenal board, for our fans won’t accept becoming the Lyon of England.

  60. Paul,

Behave, Viduka has never been in Ade’s league.

Don’t remember Viduka attracting the attention of small minor league clubs like AC Milan and Barca who….do you?

If those kind of clubs want him, he deserves to be paid more! End of!

If we want to keep him, we’ll pay up, if we don’t, we don’t want him.

  61. Winning 7 league titles on the trot, like Lyon have, may not be so bad, upon reflection.

  62. Hboy…
saying youd rather have Ade than RVP is complete madness.(in my opinion)
RVP has the best touch ive seen since the Iceman. IF (i know its abig if) he stays injury free next season he could be Majestic.
Im optimistic about RVP Blowing the league apart next season..
    Everything crossed

  63. I understand the gist of what Hboy is saying, though in that Ade and Hleb are not flawless I won’t quite just yet be committing myself to doom.

Also, as for being the Lyon of England, my understanding is they are not as readily picked off as some. In fact, they drive a pretty hard bargain and don’t do too bad in the meantime.

As for Rvp or Ade, it’s a close call, though I’ll go with the Dutchman.

However, and quite significantly, I will agree the indispensible Cesc Fabregas will hardly be impressed or convinced this is the club to make all his dreams come true.

  64. this whole affair smells like rotten turd left to fester in the Tolgolese sun. I just want a conclusion to this asap.

  65. Danny, I Never said Viduka was in the same league Ade but he has never the less been a more consistent player, whether you like it or not. Does one year of good work subsitute for a life of consistency? thats my point, we really dont know how good Ade will be, though I beleive great, he is not a proven player as yet. That takes more than one season dont you think?

  66. Yes, he deserves more (if you think), I really dont care but he must can go about it in an honorable manner, you get me? He can make a million dollars an hour for all I care but be respectful to his team, manager, fans and to the sport that has made him rich, Is that wrong?

  67. Ausgunner, fair point until you remember what Gallas was paid in his first season – more than Wenger, I think! What are the criteria? Length of service, age, abililty, attitude? I think it should be only the last two, but in reality it depends largely on the agent’s bargaining power and his greed. Sagna seems to me as important as Ade and a more intelligent and professional player, though a quiet one. Just after his brother was killed, we played Birmingham: which of the players stayed with Eduardo comforting him while he was lying on the pitch with his foot hanging off? Not Gallas, not Ade, not even Cesc; it was Sagna.

I’m sick of the Ade thing, but at this stage what stands out for me is the possible fee. Just think what Wenger could buy with 35 million plus. Given the horrors of the fixture list towards the crucial end of next season – ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea and the CL quarters and semis all in a month – strength in depth may be the difference between two trophies or none. Which you would rather have, Ade or some combination of Zapata, Silva, Diogo, Villa…?

  68. I do see the logic of your argument Mia, and I suspect Wenger is mulling that over too, but the problem is that whether he can repeat 30 goals next season or not, Ade is adapted to our team play and to the PL and surely you can’t let that go lightly?

The problem with the players you name, or anybody could name is that we have no way of knowing how they will adapt. Remember Cygan was French player of the year in his position and did very well with in La Liga after he left us, but he never really adapted to the PL.

  69. Mia, not so much age/length of service but experience should definitely be a factor in how much a player is paid, and on that basis as well as ability and contribution (not really fussed about attitude in terms of how much a player is paid) I think Ade deserves to be paid more than Sagna (even though they are a similar age, one has more experience in England, the league in which Arsenal plays). That may also account for how much Gallas was paid in his first season (although nobody knows for sure how much Gallas was paid in his first season, as far as I’m concerned it’s all hearsay, although I don’t doubt that he was paid a lot).

Don’t get me wrong, Sagna is absolutely brilliant, a terrific player and one of the best signings last season, across the whole league. But something strikes me about the lack of respect Ade is getting from some fans (even when his devotion to the team was never in question).

As for “Which you would rather have, Ade or some combination of Zapata, Silva, Diogo, Villa…?”

I care more about Arsenal players, no matter how much their future is scrutinised, than players that simply aren’t ours and probably won’t amount to more than a flight of fancy, and who could quite easily upset the balance of the side as much as improve it if they were to become a part of it. So yes, I’d rather have Ade. You haven’t been reading Le Grove, I hope.

I must say though, the recent comments from Wenger today were all said with that sly smile of his, which suggests that there is more going on behind the scenes and in his head than he is suggesting there is.

  70. Ausgunner, Ades future has been scrutinized because of his own words, no? you wouldnt want David Villa, Silva and those at the team. There is no one better at integrating a player into a team than Arsene, so if we could get a combination of these players it would be cool to me.

  71. Egobayor scored 24 goals in EPL last season 6 were against Derby, he scored several from tap ins, and 2 really great goals all season. Hes was a trouble maker at Monaco and with Togo, if anyone offers 25 million take the money and run

  72. WHO KNOWS THAT EGOBAYOR GETS ONLY 30K? EVERY ONE IS BABBLING ABOUT IT BUT HE COULD BE ON 50K PLUS BONUS. IT WILL ALL COME OUT AFTER THE EURO FINAL

  73. solgooner – Ade is still an Arsenal player and you will look very foolish if he is still an Arsenal player next season, so please lay off the name calling.

  74. AusGunner, I don’t read Le Grove but I’d guess they’re slagging off Ade in a hate-filled, mindless way because there’s a chance that he’s leaving?
That’s not my position at all. I like Ade. In fact I think he’s in many respects a more useful player than Van Persie; not more skilful, but (possibly) more valuable one because of his power and pace and capacity to open up and terrorise defences. Of course I don’t want him to go, but if he does, I think we’ll manage OK, just as we’ll manage without Flamini. I’m far less sanguine about losing Hleb who, for me, is a player in a million.

Passenal, I just don’t know. What strikes me at the moment is that the attacking part of the team is going to be different regardless of what happens with Ade. Last season we didn’t have Van Persie, Rosicky or Eduardo for much of the time, and Walcott only really featured towards the end. Then there’s Vela and Nasri to come in, plus Traore to try in midfield, plus Bendtner, plus possibly a new central pairing of Denilson and Diaby, even Ramsey after Christmas if he does well in the Carling.

The only area that looks fairly stable – well, rumour-free – is the defence, but as that was our Achilles heel last season, many people must be hoping we’ll strengthen. What I’m trying to say is that I haven’t a clue even what formation we’ll usually play, with or without Ade, let alone whether, say, Silva or Villa would fit into it. But I must say I like Silva a lot – he’s not just skilful, a goal-scorer, he’s a worker and, given his age, I think Wenger might be quite tempted.

  75. Passenal regardless of whether he goes or stays Egobayor is too cocky and shows it when he scores, and in his stupid comments, he really believes hes up there with Rooney or Drogba, hes had one good season and its gone to his head.

  76. Rooney has not scored as many goals as Adebayor and he was bought up with the English game so never had to adapt. So how you can say Ade is not up there with Rooney amazes me.

  77. Judging by Adebayor’s interview in the News of the World today, he has stepped up his apparent campaign to either get a move to Barca or Milan, or, failing that, a massive payrise from Arsenal.

Arsene must be very disappointed in him, with the way he’s conducting himself.

  78. If RVP was fit, Adebayor couldn’t have scored 30 goals. If Eduardo hadn’t had the tragedy, Ade could have scored even 40+ goals. RVP played less than TH14 2006/7 season but he outscored Henry.

The point I am trying to make is WE WILL BE FINE Ade, or no Ade. If Eduardo played as the main striker instead of Ade, every fan would be singing about him and not Ade. The team creates a lot of opportunities for strikers, and so far all of our strikers are able to take the chances. If I were to rate our strikers, it will be Eduardo, RVP, Bendtner, Theo, Adebayor. Not a lot of difference between them but the way they will adapt to the style of our play.

I like Adebayor, but I think he is become too big headed for his achievements so far. He has his work rate, and the advantage of being the target man as long as he is fit, a privilege nobody else had last season. But the rest of our strike force has creativity, which Ade does not posses in comparable measure. Creativity greatly outweighs work rate, and if fans could see that they won’t have a problem with cashing in Ade for 25+ mil pounds. If we cashed in TH14 for 16 Mil. and he is still a better player than Adebayor, why not him?

  80. bring in podolski

  81. That lanky TOGo freak says he should be paid as much as henry was being paid. Ive had enough of him, who the bloody fuck does he think he is? one good season and he thinks he’s God. 6 goals against derby, half tap ins, and i never saw him score any crucial goal, like when we were losing or drawing. So screw him and sell him…..we’ll live without the tall fuck. Plus he’ll know a good deal about life when he gets to Barca and FLOPS!! GRRr……

  82. Eidur Gudjohnsen is up for grabs for 5 million. Just thinking why don’t we just buy him, to increase the depth of the squad, considering the busy s chedule at the end of the season, im sure he’ll prove quite handy.

  83. Egobayor comparing himself to TH what a joke. Hes had one good season and its gone to his head.
