Nasri, Adebayor, Even Clichy Is In On The Act – Aah, The Joys Of The Transfer Market

Samir Nasri apparently flew into London yesterday for a medical and to tie up his deal, putting to bed the longest running saga since Kristin shot JR. Well, I say flew in but nobody actually knows if he did or not, it is pure speculation at the moment but assuming he did, and it is for a medical like the reports suggest, then the deal will probably be confirmed later today or more likely, early next week. His signature should not in any way be linked to the departure of Alexander Hleb but the timing is, well let’s be generous, entirely fortuitous.

Talking of players leaving the club, Hleb had better put aside some of his luggage on the private jet that Barcelona will use because he will be accompanied by Emmanuel Adebayor for a rather nifty €29m according to the Catalan press. The article states that they will not pay a cent more than that sum but that Adebayor is the prime target as they seek to fill the Eto’o void, throwing in an old Henry quote to give the stupendously flattering report credibility.

However, Milan have said that if they do not get Adebayor, they will not sign anyone and just sit and sulk for the whole season instead. Having told the media that the Rossoneri could not afford to spend big this summer, Adriano Galliani is now wide open to chants of, “Liar! Liar! Pants on fire!” as they seem to believe that Arsenal’s refusal to negotiate is the only stumbling block, an interesting turn of phrase but perhaps I am nitpicking. And after all, I am sure that Arsene would not want to see the grown men of Milan cry so it’s a case of “So long and thanks for all the fish” for young Emmanuel because Arsene is in no way shape or form trying to build a winning squad and is willingly going to sell all of his best players simply because the playground bullies tell him to.

It is a right royal transfer tear up this morning with Gael Clichy apparently being coveted by Roma and Juventus. The former’s coach, Luciano Spalleti said,

Clichy is an excellent defender of international class. He is also still very young, so has plenty of football improvement left in him. Certainly, it would please me a great deal to see Gael Clichy in a Roma shirt.

I am sure it would and it is due recognition for Clichy’s form last season but pie in the sky wishful thinking if you ask me. Spalleti then went on to clinch the rumour with,

We will have to wait and see what develops

Which is coincidentally the first thing that George Eastman said whilst waiting to prove that the roll-film camera was a good idea.

Never fear though for Oba’s here. Perhaps not just yet as the fee Newcastle have set for him of £15m is apparently too much for Arsene to contemplate bringing the player to The Emirates and to fill the void left by Clichy. Today’s “Not-Coming-To-Arsenal” list kicks off with Daniel Parejo which is a bit quick for a denial to take place given he only joined the “Coming-To-Arsenal” list a day or so ago. Not joining him this summer is Diogo – no, not the one at Werder Bremen – but the “Portuguesa de Desportos star” (ahem) and nor is River Plate “wunderwinger” Augusto Fernandez. It is a pity for the latter duo for their rumours had never got going and it seems cruel to dash their dreams at such a tender age but football is a harsh business.

Off the pitch stuff is creeping into the fray, starting the slow build-up to a crescendo of “club in crisis” headlines later this summer no doubt. The Guardian reports that the Chips are down over the property development side of the business whilst Stan Kroenke is now apparently in pole position (hopefully that is the F1 parlance because anything else brings a nasty shudder) to buy up the Board’s shares if they go on sale and he of course, contributes to the lockdown agreement. The “club in crisis” bit? Usmanov will apparently be put on “Civil War Footing”.

And all of that has left me plum tuckered out as they say in the good old US of A so ’til Tomorrow.

Responses

  1. After being a great fan to wenger’s promises, i cant help wonder at some of the decisions made. It is clear to all that arsenal’s collapse last season was down to fatigue so when i hear stuff like the squad is enough, i am speechless.
manu has many “squad players” why cant we. I mean there is the small issue of their being european and english chammpions while we only claim to be champions of the future of soccer

  2. Every summer this transfer talk is the news equivalent of heroin (as I’d imagine it):

You know it’s a waste of space and bad for you…

Every time you get a fix the experience is less fun and more irritant…

And you know that in the time it took to consume this stuff you could have actually done something truly meaningful…

But god damn is it addictive.

My rehab is this blog and the Guardian Euro podcast.

    My thin comparison stops there.

James Richardson is great. How he isn’t on TV at the moment is a mystery to me.

  3. Arshavin;

How about him? He keeps bombing inside the box..very direct..wish cud have him, nasri and keep hleb..what a creative side we will be then…but then DM and CB still remains…

  4. Damn Spanish press! I’m just waiting for the Euro’s to end for the Cesc stories to start.

  5. You have to laugh at this time of the year. The speculation is great fun so long as you sit back put your feet up and let it wash over you. There’s probably 10% max truth in all that’s said and written, but can you spot it? Me? I can’t be arsed.

  6. Someone left The Sun on the train this morning and I made the huge mistake of actually picking it up. Full page write up on Ronaldo leaving Moan U but the writer was so pro-Manc it made me sick to my stomach.

Then reading the Gael Warning article, you mention above, again makes out as if Arsenal are in crisis and everyone is leaving.

God I HATE the Sun… last time I let it ruin my Friday morning.

  7. shooy: Maybe I should take your advice :)

  8. never sell clichy

  9. Surprised that someone respectable like the Guardian is publishing sensationalist stuff like that. Despite the weakness of the property market i doubt that the club would be plunged into crisis if a few buyer forfeited their deposits – holding onto 20% of the original asking price isnt too painful as compensation for losing a sale

  10. Most sensible thing written all summer, Shooy!

It is hard to take your advice but Yogi normally sorts it out for us.

The team that is on the pitch is the one I will support, sod everything else.

  11. PS I’ve been impressed with Adebayor’s development – but no player is worth €29m (and Martins certainly isnt worth £15m)

  12. ade can be sold in exchange with any super striker like villa etc.

  13. @shooy – I’d say less than 10%.

You’d be suprised how many people actually believe that crap though.

  14. 2 me i dont blive those craps get one defensive midfielder, ashavin, and a defender. may be an attacker of martins quality might also help.
    NB. sElL hLeB

  15. That’s the sad part. My problem is I don’t believe it, but I still read it. Classic addict behaviour…

    Anyway, on Clichy…

Not sure about other people, but I have Clichy down as a future Arsenal captain. Maybe sooner than later. He’s been in and around the side as long as anyone else, he can lead by example and never stops running. He’s clearly selfless in his when it comes to the team.

At the same time he knows what to say publicly – he can be very outspoken, but always defends the club. He’s 23, which isn’t too young at all. And contrary to spurious reports, he’ll be around for years to come.

I think that ticks most of the boxes. Is there something important missing that players need to become captains? More media appearances after games?

  16. The squad is good enough

flamini is gone so either a step up from the reserve/fringe players or a direct replacement, els the squad is good enough.

For all the fatigue and all else, we were 4 point adrift!!!

  17. why all this talk of adebayor i dont know … he is not that good at all ….. would much rather have villa or eto

  18. Big Al, I agree that Clichy could be potential captain material for the future. His work-rate and dedication is a shining example for everyone else to follow. If he can inspire that level of commitment to others then he’d make a tremendous captain. Thing is, right now I think he’s still very much a squad player, albeit a brilliant one at that. At the moment he plays for the team, he keeps it sensible and does his job professionally and that’s why the fans love him. But in terms of influence within the squd i’m not sure if he has the leadership qualities yet. Give him a couple of years more experience under his belt and I certainly wouldn’t put it out of the question. But would the pressure and responsibilities of being captain prove detrimental or beneficial to Clichy? Look at Henry for example, some players are just better left getting on with what they do best. To become captain he’ll need to establish himself as a talisman, and that’s something which Cesc is already doing.

  19. Team Spirit;

I do not think team squad is big enough. I think sole reason we lost last season was due to squad not being big enough. We didnt have sufficient wingers and able replacements for first team players in many positions.

So re inforcements in win positions are critical, I would add nasri and arshavin and retain hleb and rosicky..those wud be quality players not just promising players..

defencive midfield will also be one area we shud buy into..flamini and diara..both need to be replaced..atleast with one player..

in central of defence call needs to be made whether we need to swap some guys..else we have numbers there

    reinforcements are must

  20. THE HACKS

ed : we need a story

hack : it’s all whispers at the moment (created by us)

ed : what about Clichy ?

    hack : he’s under contract until 2020

    ed: I know he’s under ****** contract… just print a story anyway… who the **** knows

    hack : ok ed

    ed : and hack

    hack : yeah

ed : you can start printing some bs about cesc next week

  21. Yes Blackstock,

The doubters amongst us might say that making Vieira, Henry, even Gallas captain was a ploy to keep them at the club for a little longer. It didn’t do much good for Henry’s ego, or Gallas’ emotional stability.

I’d like to see captaincy as something more than a placatory bonus for the big names. And a level-headed chap like Clichy has the potential for this job and what it should entail: Galvanizing the team. Epitomizing its spirit etc.

The skipper doesn’t have to be the club’s outstanding player (though Clichy’s not far off!). And could we deal with the instability of having the Spanish clubs trying to settle with Cesc ever summer, were he captain? It’s going to be inevitable I feel.

I agree though: Give him time. see how his role in the side develops. But I’d like to see Clichy kept in mind.

  22. I too sometimes let the bilge and bile put out by the sewage recycling system that is the European press get to me. So little real news and so so much bullshit written and recycled by lazy, overpaid, and uninformed hacks. I think I’ll restrict my football web surfing to a few rational Arsenal sites such as this until the season starts.

With each passing day I witness more and more under the table and back room dealing and more players willing to use any means to break their contracts. Arsene Wenger said in a recent article that the whole transfer system may be about to collapse due. I think he may be right. This may be the beginning of the end of the transfer system as we know it. A few more court challenges by players and contracts me become unenforceable agreements on worthless pieces of paper. If so, the game as a whole will suffer as there will be no benefits to smaller and/or lower division teams to develop players, as they can walk away for nothing.

Until the FA, UEFA, and FIFA are ready to enforce the transfer regulations, the system will continue to spiral into chaos.

  23. - unsettle Cesc, I meant, clumsily!

  24. Roma just signed Riise.

I know he’s crap, but Roma won’t be bying two left backs in one go.

    Keep Adebayor, sell Hleb.

Get the German giant defender and Asharvin.

  25. Team spirit!

We simply have to get a defender and as you said a defensive midfielder. Or else we wont win anything again.

  26. Big al!

You are right, that clichy situation is absolute nonsense!!!

  27. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ABOUT OBAFEMI MARTINS!!

Why are we after him, we have enough going forward. Why the hell are we after attacking players and that too someone as overated as martins.

Ho ho ho.. did newcastle ask 15 million, ho ho, that is typical geordie: deluded as usual, I wouldnt want him at arsenal even if he was offered at 5 million!!!

Ok then we seem to have chosen the lesser of the two evils:STAN KROENKE. I personally dont like him too much but he is a better bet than the fat idiot usmanov!!

    Cheers!!

  28. YOGI!!

Is that barcelona 29 million solely for adebayor or both ade and hleb combined?

  29. I will be very surprised and shocked if Ade was to leave… Selling our top goalscorer who has plenty of room to develop is just an outrageous thought. I know many Arsenal fans say yeh lets just swop him for Villa or Etoo.. You are all lacking common sense… Ade brings many different elements to our team, he is not a goalscorer by nature, Eduardo is that for us, and RvP in a more creative way. Villa is too similar to Eduardo.. so if Ade leaves the most likely player to replace him is probably Bendtner.

The Clichy rumours are very wishful, the want a player who loves Arsenal, our football, Arsene Wenger, and is 1000% dedictaed to making Arsenal successfull.. players like Gael dont jump ship for cash. Flamini had a different agenda, he wasnt offered a contract last summer because he still had to prove himself, he did so and left, good to him. But Clichy was given his chance at Arsenal, shown faith in replacing one of the best Left Backs in the world at the time ( i wont say his name!) and has been amazing for us ever since.

Im not going as far as saying make Clichy captain because i dont really see him as a strong Captain, but he is an example to follow in a way for other players. Cesc for me, is the talisman, everyone looks to him to produce something, he also runs himself to the ground like Clichy. Cesc has played over 200 games for us also, been at the club for nearly 5 years i think too.. Cesc is the man for the job… give him the captaincy and he will lead us to glory!

  30. My source in Barcelona – straight up, who works at the Nou Camp, just told me that Hleb and Adebayor were in the Board Room.

Now, my source is realiable, and I wouldn’t like to give confirmation, but if this is true, then it looks like Adebayor and Hleb may be signing for Barcelona.

My source said that, furthermore, the taxi driver who was waiting outside, was taking them to the Airport, to catch the Milan flight.

If this is true, then you can say that you read it first here.

  31. Muppet, you are not doing badly at all!!!!

Naga, who exactly says we are after martins??? Its silly season end of! That also includes all the other transfer roumours. I think Muppet is spot on!

So, is chelsea’s squad also not big enough? Cos they didnt win anything as far as i know

  32. Welcome chrisgoona my mate!!

I was wondering what was taking you so long!

I absolutely agree with you on clichy! He has simply been wonderful, There is no need to assess its just a rubbish story from “the sun”. Dont worry, no way will will he leave!

Now about the ade situation, I agree with you that we dont need villa or etoo. I wouldnt want both of them even if ade leaves. I just think if ade is not 100% commited and he is even slightly swayed, Chris I think 25 million would be a good bargain for us. Maybe its because I rate bentner over ade but if we get roque santa cruz for 10 million and a quality centre back for 15 million then it would be a nice arrangement dont you think????

I think roque will lead our line well along with bentner who I really rate and roque is a very good finisher and very good in the air+experienced qithout being over the hill!!

Again you are right about CESC HE IS IRREPLACEABLE!! if he goes the team will fall apart, it is precisely in order to keep him that we need trophies so that he can stay for ATLEAST 8 MORE YEARS with us!!!

By the way Chris, What is your opinion on the never ending transfer link of oba to arsenal which has now been going on for 4 years I think since he was at inter!!

  33. Team spirit!!

Its THE SUN. I was just referring to it because he is simply a link that wont go away. This has been going on since he was at INTER.

I happen to think he is overated, and was a bit put off at the possibility that maybe arsene wants him,, because this rumour keeps popping up again and again every season!!!

  34. Naga

The fee quoted was for Adebayor on his own although another paper claims Barca won’t go above €25m.

However, I would have thought that had they bid €29m, they would have added €1m to meet Arsenal’s asking price to ‘do the deal’.

    YW

  35. well if we sisnt buy him from inter, be sure we are less likely to buy him from Newcastle!

  36. How does anyone rate Bendtner today over Ade today? Just based on what?

  37. Thank you TEAM SPIRIT!!

Calm down, I hear you mate. Point taken!

    cheers!!!

  38. Ole gunner!

Calm down my friend, I stated above that it was only my opinion! I have nothing against the vast majority who rate ade more than bentner!!!

Even if I am right , it can only be good for arsenal, wouldnt it my mate??

    Cheers!!!

  39. naga, fear not, am not upset, just dont see it happening is all, I know I spund very emphatic, and am no AW, I actually rate martins; hes very hard working… just dont think he is better than any we have…

  40. Hey I forgot,

IT SEEMS THAT OUR FORMER IDIOT GOALKEEPER DID INDEED KNOW HOW TO STOP RONALDO!!! ha ha ha ha ha ha………..

  41. Naga, naga… naga

We had a little chat yesterday didn’t we about the pro’s and con’s of listening and reading all the dribble from hacks in the press… I know you remember. I think the Ledley King to Arsenal story is the funniest thus far… oh wait, that won’t be until next week. It is the silly season people, enjoy the stories in the same way we enjoy the satire of Muppet the Magnificent.

Now Chill, shake it off and start again with considered thought and passionate verbose.

  42. Naga..

Yeah, work has tied me down a bit over the last few days..!! will reply alot quicker in the future.

In regards to what i was saying about Cesc, i dont think we should make him captain just to give him an extra reason to stay. If Cesc isnt enjoying his football at Arsenal he will leave, but we have a good team which he knows can achieve things. I would make Cesc captain for many other reasons besides to just help him stay at the club… look at Henry or Vieira.. if a player wants out, they will leave, simple as. But Cesc is an inspiration in our team, Gallas i rate him, but everyone has been given this bad impression of him and i think hes lost alot of respect from the fans and some of the palyers too.

Roque Santa Cruz aint as good as he seems, he struggled at the big clubs he was at, and he will struggle at Arsenal in my eyes. Quality CB i agree with, but to have 3 CBs at the club wanting to be in the starting 11 wont work, someone must go as we have plenty of cover.

On the Martins situation, Wenger must have looked at him at 1 point or another.. i dont think he has the all round game that we require from an Arsenal striker. Even Ade who has been with us and scored 30 goals last year still struggles with the pace of our passing play.

All we need is Nasri, Hleb to stay and a defensive option with quality. No Gk… No striker… we are set for next season, wot u think?

  43. Kristin shot JR?

    Oh _thanks_ for that.

Couldn’t you at least preface that information with *SPOILER ALERT*?

  44. H ha ha ha…. TORONTO!

Its a joy to hear from you everytime!

I had taken your advice and dismissed “the sun” allegation that clichy was on his way to italy of all places. You can see that in my above posts!

We had discussed earlier about ade and the “great badge kissing issue” of player loyalty. I am still not convinced of him, I still think its a bargain if we get 25 million for ade. TORONTO, What do you think about my proposed “arrangement” on this issue as I have stated above in my 12:27 response above????

  45. leave our former keepr alone.

I love Jens and its cos of him first off that am supprting germany, then there is ballack whom I adired since leverkosen days, then theres lahm and meterzeker, and podoski and bastian, and klose since would cup.

My team to win the euros

  46. Naga,

Here is the issue for me, people see a player and say “wow, ain’t he good” and then utter “Arsenal need him”. The fact is that Etoo was good, his past couple of seasons have shown nothing more than a sulking striker in decline. I do think the Roque had a terrific season for Blackburn but they are not Arsenal and more to the point we actually have a glut of strikers. Any suggest move for Ade away from Arsenal would not be in the interest of the club this season even were it for £50 million because we have lost or are losing 1-2 players that were main stays last term. I think Flamini is a bigger loss than Hleb, not that I don’t rate him because I do but Hleb needs more production and nifty passing alone wasn’t enough from such a talented player.

As fans we must all realise that the players of today are mercenaries, they are here for money and they’ll more for more money. The badge kissing is what it is, it is neither here nor there for me because we all know that it is part of their celebration not a action of passionate loyalty.

Lastly, for those that think we lost the title race due to fatigue alone, please recognise that Arsenal were on the even of some unfortunate calls and had another horrible season of injuries to key players. There is no one reason we were unable to complete the job, there were a number. I shudder whenever I hear commentators stating that bad decisions even out over the course of a season because here is a news flash! they don’t. I understand you’ll get calls (Pires dive vs. Portsmouth in the unbeaten season) and you don’t (a few penalty calls last term) but any suggestion that it is even is a slight on the intelligence of most fans. That Manchester United concede so few penalties is in stark contrast to the rest of the league (for the most part), is it baise? maybe, but Sir Alex wouldn’t say so. Arsenal need to create their own luck by finishing teams off and not lolly gagging around with a 1 or 2 nil lead… that would be great for starters. I believe we have a great team and time shall indeed tell.

    TO

  47. Hey CHRISGOONA!!

I agree about cesc, I think it will stifle his game, after all he is still 21! He has the quality, but later not now!!

You reminded me of another thing, I say this practice of arsene of giving captaincy to players to have them stay is ridiculous and has to stop. It is lame and self defeating, We as a club should be bigger than that!!

About Roque, I think he will be good because he brings another dimension to our team. I want him because he is NOT like our other players. I am a fan of bentner because of this, nikki is actually pretty poor with regard to ball control which is the strong point of the other arsenal players, and this is precisely why I rate him. He brings a dimension other than our free flowing football. It helps us when things dont go our way. He and the roque type can be our PLAN B. And roque is inexpensive compared to others like villa!!

CHRIS, you didnt answer me last time about my musings about whether Gallas was on the decline. The last time you will observe he was turned too easily by TONI twice only to blaze over. I had also said that SOL CAMPBELL was sold at 32, what is gallas now 31-32, I cant believe that he still has years left in his contract. On the defenders I still talk about dimensions. I dont say that either gallas or toure is bad, they are good, but THEY ARE VERY SIMILAR. I think we need a defender who will compliment them, someone in the Adams mould. I think we need to get that sort of defender in even if it is at the cost of losing Gallas!

Now, chris, nasri seems to be in, dont you think that will make the attacking midfield too overcrowded as you have stated about the defence. Where does this leave us: fabregas, denilson, nasri?, hleb, diaby, ramsey, vela, walcott, and rosicky. Now REMEMBER none of this players are eligible for the “flamini spot” we need another defensive midfielder for that. I dont know CHRIS, I think this is definitely the death knell for the likes of lansbury, gibbs and randall. especially ransall who I think now will leave. They have to be given a chance at some point CHRIS, dont you think???? I am frustrated!!!

I am not excited about nasri to tell you the truth, because it is the least of our problems!!!

    What do you say?????

  48. Is it true that Arsene is selling Ade? Its all over the papers and smells like the way Henry was sold. Can’t Arsene block it?

A sale of Ade will confirm the perception that Arsenal is now a selling club and not serious.

What we need is to bring players in to augment what we have. We need a replacement for Hleb if he leaves and Arshavin will be fine. Then a new CB, preferably an English, we can win the title.

However, the intense newspaper reports of Ade on sale coupled with official silence of the club is a throwback to the period prior to the sale of Henry.

I’ve always criticised Ade because of his wastes in front of goal but selling him will send us two years backwards.

Arsene should resist the sale of Ade at any cost, even if he will require 100k a week to keep him. The sale of Ade will perhaps be thefinal nail in the coffin of Arsene as many fans will be gutted, soon after Flamini has gone and the possible sale of Hleb.

Retention of Ade with competition will only make him better.

  49. Toronto,

I have never rated etoo, and neither do I want villa for 30 million.(my god! do valencia take us for fools?)

I completely agree with you on flamini, I have said this here many times before that we gunners are taking the flamini departure too lightly. Not many players in the world can do what he did for us last season.

You are right about the strikers, we have enough, I am just suggesting cruz because I am not convinced that ade is 100% commited to the club!

And lastly, I never want to blame defeats on bad decisions, however blatant the bad decision might be. I want to request all gunners that however harsh the decision for us might be if it is an honest mistake, we have to accept it and carry on. We have to be big enough to take it, IT HAPPENS its football and its not perfect. We need to rise above these things and truly fulfil the credentials as a great club that we are!! If we dwell on these things it is only belittling ourselves!!

I give you a shining example, Brian glanville, the famous journalist, remembers the shady way in which Liverpool were robbed in the european cup in the 60’s. There was strong evidence of match fixing, as liverpool were eliminated, but shankly, and liverpool returned to find redemption in the 70’s. These are the mark of champions, and if arsenal also carry on doing what they do best, we will get our due! dont worry!!

By the way I did not appreciate Henry’s gracelessness post match after the 2006 UCL final, I know it was a bitter defeat but we have to be bigger than that. It is precisely these small minded behavior that we need to avoid in the future, if we are truly to be the great club which I know we are!!!

    What do you think toronto!!!

  50. Howard!

I am sorry mate, but we dont need ashravin! I agree about the central defender though!!!

I am not sure about your adebayor view!

    Cheers

  51. naga

We need Arshavin to replace Hleb who’s on his way out. Similar control ability but score goals and has pace and power.

Arshavin will be the goal scorer from the midfield we’ve lacked since Pires and Freddie left.

  52. At the end of the day all top footballers are well paid today. But what they want now is MEDALS and TROPHIES to go with the money.Players look at Arsenal now and see great football but where are the trophies. Will Cesc stay after next season if we win F**k all again next year?Of course not.

  53. Howard!!

you have a point! But wouldnt that stifle the chances of our academy like lansbury, wilshere, randall even more. They play in ashravins position+ashravin is a player with huge attitude problems!

  54. WE DO NOT NEED ASHAVIN!

We need Deco as well plus the turkey captain, plus Ballack, plus Robben since we a lready have van persie!!!

    guys take it easy

  55. naga

If we can contain Ade’s recent cocky attitude why can’t we do same for Arshavin. He’s a great player endowed with a lot of capabilities that we lack in midfield.

He can play left and right of midfield and behind the centre forward in a 4-5-1 formation. A versatile player, able to fit in any position up front and in the middle. He comes with powerpacked goal scoring shots that often gets in.

He’ll be a great addition to the Arsenal and probably, the supplement that we need to end the title drought.

  56. Howard I thought you would be delighted to see Ade sold!!!!!

  57. naga

If we don’t get Arshavin and we get Podolski it will also be fine. Podolski hasn’t got ball controlling skills as Arshavin and Hleb but he’s ahead of Hleb in terms of pace, power and goal scoring.

Any of Arshavin or Podolski will be a good replacement for Hleb. The fact is Hleb is 70% gone and has to be replaced with somebody who can contribute goals from the midfield.

  58. Howard!

Before all that we have to get a defender without which we wont win anything. Lets wait for arsene to get the defender first!!!!

  59. Explain to me again why Hleb must be replaced? We have attacking midfield options, so why exactly? The one area in the midfield that could be an issue is the defensive responsibilities, and yet we have potential there (though I agree none stand out as the obvious choice at this moment in time). The fact that every off season we have the but this or that mentality is so frustrating because it is usually the same people that then utter about the fact we are not bringing people though. I don’t understand why people are so willing to write players off at 20 years of age! I have a wonderful youth set up, if Arsene decides that he is going to explore those options who are we to complain? The lack of respect accorded Arsene sometimes though fans demanding or crying for new signing is in my opinion very weak.

  60. naga

The fact is Arsene has said recently that he’s not bringing in a defender. He’s keeping faith with Kolo, Gallas and the pair of Senderos/Djourou. You can argue about that but that is his decision and if he fails he’ll bear the rath. Well, our defence is the major problem but the man don’t see it that way so better forget it.

    Toronto

We need Hleb replacement because we need to have someone who can contribute to goals from the middle. Hleb has been incapable of doing that and may be one of the reasons we lost out last season. Apart from Cesc, there’s no goal threat coming from the middle and the absence of Hleb provides an opportunity to use his sales value to bring in a goalscoring midfielder.

  62. Howard,

We have Diably, Song, Gilberto, Nasri, Walcott, Vela, Lansbury and Barazite would could add a different dimension to the Flamini issue, some are holding midfielders and others attacking. The fact is that we have depth we need to use them.

  63. Why don’t we agree that there are a number of players that could be an addition to the squad, hell we could get 15 players but even then someone would say that there were better players we could have grabbed. There is no question that Ash has a great season this year, but where as he been the previous? The fact is that Arsenal shouldn’t be buying players on the basis of a single season and nor should they dismiss them for the self same reason.

  64. THE HACKS

hack : err.. ed.. lot of stuff kicking around about Andrei Arshavin

    ed : And ?

hack : well – possible angle for Arsenal signing, as he could be replacement for Hleb, and he wears a red shirt

ed : and replacement for Adebayor ?

hack : no ed, Adebayor is a striker

ed : I don’t ****** care. We need more credibility in this story. Say he’s a replacement 2nd striker for Adebayor and Hleb

hack: (confused) errr… ok… you mean 2nd striker and midfielder ?

ed : just ******* print it

  66. toronto, pls tell them!

  67. Muppet, I will also remember where I read it if the ‘rumor’ regarding Adebayor and Hleb when it turns out. Honestly, at the money being quoted, they are both replaceable, but I would much rather they be playing for Arsenal next year. They are both players who work their socks off on the field. And it is no sure thing that any replacements would click in the squad.

  68. Teamspirit,
I fear that it is a pointless/fruitless task to try and have people look inward before shifting there focus to external potential. Arsenal have invested heavily in youth development and this structure has to be shown to provide opportunities or it is a failure. The problem inherent with the constant clamour for new signings is that whether we win or lose they are always going to be there because the justifications merely shift. If we win the league then we need to buy because we want to win again and though the current squad did will they can always do better! The reverse of course is the “we failed to win because we lacked depth”. There is no beginning or ending point for this discussion because no matter what may be said, inferred or shown shall only be railed against by those that want more. Not everyone can be happy I guess.

  69. Toronto

Arshavin or Podolski will provide at least 12/15 goals a season. For all those you’ve mentioned only Walcott has the potential to replicate same even that; could he be consistent?

If only Hleb had delivered even 10 goals? He did 3.

  70. Howard,

I understand what you are saying, really I do. My point is that we have depth and players that can score why always look for the media darling and not for the lads working hard within the club now.

The likes of Lansbury and Barazite were hugely impressive in the youth world cup… so lets see what happens. If Arsene buys then it is his judgement to do so, I just think we have depth in house that needs to be explored.

You could also suggest Deco as a creative midfielder, or indeed Toulolon (probably spelt that wrong) as a defensive one. There shall always someone else.

  71. Why haven’t we signed anyone today? Here I am sitting here, twiddling my thumbs and waiting for Barnet. Honestly, these people have no consideration at all.

  72. naga, stop and think a minute: do you REALLY think that Arsene Wenger, the man we all know, would REALLY be interested in Obafemi Martins at any price, let along 15 mil? Really now, think about it. Obviously the player’s future is unclear, he’s being shopped around by his agent and those old stories about Arsene saying nice things about him are being used to buttress a ridiculous claim that we want to add him to the squad.

I have to say something smells with these Ade stories.

Don’t you love it when you see players like Kaka, Villa and Torres all rejecting Chelsea’s dirty millions?

Still waiting for news on the signing of that 4-legged Martian wonder Eric. I think Arsene should break the bank on him. Imagine how Arsene could convert him into a totally complete player able to do EVERYTHING on the pitch. He could be one-man team!

  73. A new UEFA report profiles the issue of home-grown players, nationals and non-nationals, and the figures show that Arsenal are actually in a very good position compared to supposedly superior clubs (on this issue) like Man United:

  74. Clichy has signed a new long-term contract:

  75. I’m going to try posting this again:

There’s an article over on VitalArsenal about a new UEFA report with figures regarding home grown players. Apparently, Arsenal are in far better shape, for both nationals and non-nationals, than clubs who have better reputations than us on this issue (like MU, Villa, etc.):

  77. NYmarcus,

The issue as I understand from The Universe Chronicle is that Eric’s club Mars FC have decided that the player is not for sale… typical.

  79. GLICHY JUST SIGNED A NEW CONTRACT…THIS TELLS U THAT THE SUN ARE THE MOST BS NEWSPAPER EVER TO BE WRITTEN

  80. Hey all ! my fist time on here and must say its been keeping me semi sane during the dry season. I lived in the UK for 2 years and must say the sun is the most utterly B ***S**T crap newspaper ive ever had the misfortune to read. so im never to worried about what they say, i have faith in AW and believe he has the right idea and is going to take our club forward, . the problem is we are going to have a hard time hanging on to our stars, we allreaddy are. NO trophies and smaller wages are our problem. A player like Cesc could pick his club and his wages and go where he pleases, hell id swap sunny spain for london for less wages. Same for a number of our stars. I do belive if AW can keep them together they will be the team of the future, But he needs to keep them first. I allso belive you dont send a boy out to do a mans work, watching Portugal agains germany yesterday reminded me of a Arsenal Chelsea game, for all the flair the portugese posses the germans had their number yesterday, the Age, Experience at that level of competition and mature mentality was what seperated them, im just gutted Ronnie didnt cry on telly for us. I feel if we had two or three mature older stars to guide the youngsters and give us some maturity it would really transform the team.
O and naga im with you on senderos,,!

  81. Haha…Clichy signed and shut the media up…that’s an Arsenal man for you.

**Love you Clichy** I have no doubt you’ll be an Arsenal Legend.

    hack : Van Persie

ed : ok, let’s run a story on Van Persie going to Inter

  83. They needed EDUARDO on a day like this, just like we needed him in our final 8 games.

  84. TURKEY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  85. Muppet legendary, your best so far…..

  86. i just watched turkey win agianst croatia..fukin awseome match..not to many goals but i reckon dudu would have slotted those missed chances eyes closed…germany though are to good for turkey ..a german vs italy final or german vs netherland final will be played..

  87. hey did u know that kazim kazim is a massive arsenal fan…one more reason for me to support them..i love the underdogs…

  88. hahahahahaha….modric is going to be a big hit..on the balls of sputs that is…what was the croatian coach thinking sending 2 young players to start taking the penalties

  89. modric and rictic i think

  90. REALLY glad for turkey.

was supporting Croatia for Eduardo, i guess they had to miss him at some point, like today, he was sorely missed by them!

  91. Probably Howard is going to come out now and say that Croatia not going to the Semi-Final is like England not qualifying…Right Howard?
