Arsenal
Yesterday started with Aaron Ramsey hogging the headlines, his much anticipated decision about which of the teams courting him supposedly due but now not expected until Wednesday at the earliest although there are various reports, including from the BBC, that the deal has been sealed. Whether the reported promised first team action will come as quickly as he would like at The Emirates remains to be seen but Theo Walcott has announced that he is going to be pushing for a regular place in starting line-up. Having set himself a target of twenty starts and half as many goals for last season, Walcott is not going to leave it at that,
You have got to set yourself different goals every season and I will set a new target and push on
The perfect attitude for him to show Arsene. To be honest, twenty starts next season ought not to be beyond Walcott although I suspect that for tough away games – not necessarily just those at close rivals but places such as Bolton – it is more likely that he will be used as a substitute with Eboue holding down a more defensive role.
On the subject of defensive midfielders, Gilberto has warned those who may not be entirely settled at Arsenal that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Speaking from experience of watching former colleagues who have moved on, the Brazilian said,
I don’t know what they have in mind but they should stay a little bit longer. Maybe they want to try something different, but they could develop themselves and achieve big things at Arsenal. The team is young and getting better. It could be really special if the players all stay. What is important is to keep everyone at the club, for them to stay long-term at the club
Of recent departures, the jury is still out on Henry’s move to Barcelona, his difficult first season beset by injury concerns and turmoil in his private life, along with the usual internecine warfare at the Catalan club. Pires has enjoyed a great season at Villarreal but like Edu suffered badly with injury soon after they left Arsenal. The only one who immediately springs to mind as having moved onto better things is Patrick Vieira who was won titles in Italy. There are probably others who have left and done well but at the early hour this is written, their names escape me. Generally speaking, Arsene has pretty much got it right in letting people go when their peak has passed. Whether that remains the case and with Flamini, you doubt it, only time will tell.
Gilberto did not chastise those who sought further monetary reward elsewhere but added a warning,
When you win things you achieve more than anybody else. It follows that you get better contracts and more money,” says Gilberto. I cannot blame them if they have a good contract at another club but I still believe if they stay at the club and have a good season they could do a lot for the club and themselves. Then try new things. Most of the players who leave miss the club for lots of reasons. The lifestyle at Arsenal is fantastic. You get so well looked after
There was also a warning for the club as well,
Next season will be very important for the club and the players. They must win something to keep the ambition of everybody and to maintain the hope of every player. If we don’t win anything next year it will be difficult to keep everybody happy. If you don’t see any possibility of winning the title they will change their minds
As he said earlier in the interview, the players are in a better situation this close season than they were last having come close to winning a title. It now remains to boost onwards and upwards. Of his own future, Gilberto is happy to stay if Arsene wants him to,
I do want to stay. It depends when I come back if Arsene wants me to stay. I still have one year left on my contract. I’m happy to stay at the club. I will wait until I return to London and pre-season training on 21 July and then I will sit down and talk about it
At the moment, I would have said his stay at Arsenal is pretty much assured given that there is a gap to be filled in the centre of midfield. Alex Hleb’s much touted departure moved into a different game with Bayern Munich the latest suitors according to the German press.
Alex Song has been handed a new contract but Kolo Toure believes that the squad lacked focus at the crucial time,
We started it really well but we had some bad luck at the end of the season. We did not have the same desire and focus at the end and that’s what we have to change next season
It is good that they know what has gone wrong, now they have to prove they have learned from it, something that will unfold as the season advances. It will be done however without the mystical healing hands of Gary Lewin who is joining Fabio Capello’s England ‘Revolution’ on a permanent basis.

Arsenal at Euro 2008
At Euro 2008, it was good to see Robin van Persie return for Holland last night and content himself with a brief cameo of running around for a bit, some neat control and a half decent effort near the end but basically avoiding any physical contact with anyone. The match itself was a cracking game and hopefully a signal for other national team coaches to take their cue from van Basten and Donadoni who set their teams out for attacking with a solid defensive base. van Bronckhorst and Sneijder were the outstanding Dutchmen for me but perhaps the first player who plays in a position for which Arsene has to recruit was Engelaar for the Dutch. He was reminiscent of Gilberto at his best with a quick passing game, equally comfortable with the long or short ball but more importantly, patrolling in front of his defence with occasional bursts forward. It remains to be seen if this can be classed a typical performance by the player. It was a typical performance from Dirk Kuyt though; his first touch of the ball ended with him eating the turf despite an opponent not touching him.
As for William Gallas and his French colleagues, they are staring down the barrels of a repeat of their exit at the 2002 World Cup with games against the Dutch and Italians to come. They were ponderous and unadventurous in their match against Romania.
’til Tomorrow.

nice one.
who is going to be the captain next season.. surely not gallas!!!!!!

Engelaar impressed me a lot. I am not quite sure, if he can continue his impressive run in the tournament. If he does, i think he is a good prospect who will fit in Arsene’s bunch. Not quite sure, where he plays and what his price tag will be… but when ever he got the ball, i was pondering how he will fit in Arsenal.

The dutch surprised me alot, always knew they had the technical ability but i didnt think they had such a physical aspect to their game. Italians didnt know what hit them last night.. great stuff!! haha
Who remembers the days of Davids, Bergkamp, De Boeur, Seedorf, Kluivert, Overmars… they played some amazing stuff as well.

The radio says Ramsey has chosen us. Sesible of him, though I expect the private jet to Basel we laid on for him must have helped make up his mind – not very ecological of us, but all in a good cause.
Poor France, but I still think Italy will go out, which would be good because they’re very boring and vain. I wonder if that Tous-La-La, or whatever his name is, would suit us, assuming we don’t go for the Portugese kid or someone none of us have heard of.

Engelaar just recently signed for Schalke 04, follwoing his coach at FC Twente who recently took over the reigns there. Although unheard of by many until recently he is actually 28 and not a prospect in the Wenger sense.

Ramsey has chosen us of course, i said yesterday for a youngstar there is no greater apeal than Arsenal, the style of football and the opprtunity you have is far greater an attraction than joining that Red Nose di**. By: Aman on June 10, 2008

If Ramsey signs for us, 1 of the reasons probably is the top-£££ we pay the kids. Its a fine policy to catch them young & watch them grow which can’t really be duplicated by Chelsea or ManU due to the fact no one else has the eye for talent like AW does but the Q remains if we would reward them sufficiently once they have become regulars.
Have brought the Invincibles memories back, raises a Q in my mind if we would have had a 3 yrs dry spell while rebuilding if we had retained couple of them – like Edu, Pires?! True Pires had a long term injury after leaving us but thats in hindsight his replacement Rosicky has been out in the same way too! Was it their experience that would have helped us retain our focus during the final run-in like Giggs did for ManU?!

That is the $64m question – would they have made the difference? Would they have been fit? In a game or two they may have done but would that have been enough.
It is something I would not dwell on in much the same way Toure did in his comments in the post. The players should put last season to bed and learn from their mistakes. I am not sure they can gain anymore from talking about – perhaps they have to move on to refocus.

Arsenal at Euro 2008:
Having watched all of the games so far, I think the Arsenal player that the tournament is
crying out for, and who I suspect would stand
out a mile – for the right reasons – is Alexander
Hleb.
Yes, he’s not at the tournament, but I believe he would make a real difference if he were…playing in a secondary striker role, opening up the very tight defences we’ve seen so far, and creating time & space for others to exploit.
Hleb’s capacity to retain possession & create havoc in the final opposing third should not be underestimated.
I’ll certainly be sorry to see him go, should he end up leaving Arsenal in the near future.

hleb i think will stay…. so much fuss over his departure.
vela is going to be the one to watch for… his directness is his biggest asset unlike dos santos.

in your team where is RvP, Rosicky, Hleb, Toure… they all still Arsenal players arent they??
U lot can believe what you want that comes out in the media, but i dont believe it untill its confirmed. The whole Hleb saga seems like there is some truth in it, but unless we see Arsenal.com confirming Hleb has gone then it still hasnt yet happened. Same goes for Nasri, we may have a virtual agreement that everything will be signed after Euro’s, but untill it happens you cant say hes an Arsenal player. Mid August we will all know who is exactly be in our squad, so just sit back and anjoy the euros.

Ok he had the first dodgy patch since he 1st came after the ANC but he is still World Class you dont become poo over night. And AW wont play a 4-3-3 no way did any one watch the highlights of Mexico Vs Peru Vela was outstanding scoring once almost another and had a part in two of the other goals OMG i can’t wait to see him in arsenal shirt.
I dont think we actually need another striker only an Engelaar style monster in the middle of the park with his work rate and a decisive/imposing center back.
Man Vela looks amazing.

………………Almunia………………
Sagna….Toure…..Gallas….Clichy
…..Fabregas…Diaby…Nasri……..
RvP………………………….Rosicky
……………..Adebayor……………..
Others contending for starting spots:
Fabianski – Really wonder whether fabianski is ready to handle a few premiership games if Almunia gets injured?
Eboue/Song
Denilson
Gilberto
Senderos/Djourou – Cant see both senderos & djourou settling for the bench
Walcott
Vela
Bendtner
+Eduardo
+1 more defender
Ramsey – maybe will be in the reserves at 1st
Point being we have a promising squad with plenty of talent, the key will be the extra defensive option Wenger decides to bring in.

“Touslala would not be an addition to us on what I saw last night.”
And after seeing him play in one game, you’re able to pronounce an informed judgment on him.
And it’s Toulalan.
Would people stop judging players based on ONE freaking game, esp. if it’s their first major tournament? And also remember that club form does not necessarily equal national team form. Compare Cesc at Arsenal v. Cesc on the Spanish team. Does Aragones use him to the best of his abilities? We’re talking Domenech here, hardly an inspiring manager.
“Did Nasir get a run?”
Yes, but far too late and for for too short a time to make any difference.
France always start slow and then build. The problem is that all Domenech wants to do is defend. He has a very talented squad, one of the most talented in the tournament, but he suffocates the life out of them. Based on one game people all over the net are saying Benzema is overrated — well the guy barely got any service, what with two solid DMs who rarely if ever go forward and only one real attacking threat in midfield (Ribery). The other one was Malouda who got the ball plenty of times but never knew wtf to do with it.
Toulalan is a fantastic DM, much like Makelele in his younger days. I’d love to see him paired with Cesc but Lyon will never sell him. Many Lyon fans point to him as their player of the season, ahead of Benzema.
If you want to watch Arsenal on the int’l stage, it’s France — struggling mightily to break down small, superdefensive teams like Romania but fantastic against teams who play football, like Holland and Italy. France’s record against both Holland and Italy is actually very good (Italy haven’t beaten France in open play since 1978).
I fully expected France’s game v. Romania to be a dire 0-0 draw because Domenech’s approach has failed to capitalize on his squad’s powerful attacking potential. What was a shocker was that, like Arsenal, France do play lovely football even when they can’t score against 9 men in front of goal. But against Romania, they didn’t even do that.
France’s problem is that there is no Zidane to work with the remaining veterans and grab the team by the scruff of the neck and force them to advance. That’s what happened in Germany 2 yrs ago. The formation that ultimately worked then was a 4-3-2-1 — but that worked with Zidane as the midfield general. Right now the only player who can perform that role is Ribery, but will Domenech let him loose? And can he stay uninjured?
BTW, it can’t be said enuf: in a world of Dinhos, Adrianos, Ronaldos (the real one) and Rivaldos, Gilberto makes us Brazilians very proud.

I wouldn’t want to leave Toure out as much as anyone else, but we’ve seen how him and Gallas don’t really work as a centre-back duo at all. One should only be played if the other one is unavailable in my opinion, and I really can’t see Wenger taking back the captaincy from Gallas until another season has passed at least. Wenger’s hinted that he wants to strengthen in defense, and I have a feeling that if he does then he’ll be looking for a Sagna-esge character who can slot right into the back four and immediately have an impact. My prediction is that Senderos will continue to be a back-up player until his consistency improves, and Djorou will be used occasionally in midfield. Toure will be used when needed but no so often as before because of his age now.
The XI I posted wasn’t my ideal, perfect XI possible or anything, just a little experiment i’d like to see tried some day. I like the idea of Walcott and Vela being inter-changable as midfielders/strikers, and Sagna and Clichy being interchangable as fullbacks/wingers. Song can drop back into defense to provide extra cover if needed, and Diaby’s just there to provide extra weight to midfield. It doesn’t have to just be 4-3-3 or any formation in particular, I see it more as total-football. Wenger will soon have a wealth of players which can all play in more than one position. He’s always keen on adding another aspect to a player’s game, for example Walcott, Song, Djourou, Traore are all flexibile in their positions. If you can incorporate that flexibility into your tactics then maybe you’re onto something. Or maybe not. I’m just taking a bit of a punt here, if i’m wrong then you can rest assured that not once have I ever been in charge of managing a football team

Hey all,
Some what off topic here but I have been following the events surrounding Ronnie and his potential move to Real with close interest. I heard today through the usual news sources that Manchester United have finally submitted a letter to Fifa concerning Real’s obvious tapping up of the player and want something done about it… at this point I have to laugh. Is this the same Manchester United that Stam in his book pointed out had a secret meeting with the player and tapped him up or indeed the same Man U that used the media to show their interest in Hargreaves? To think that poor Man U have been hard done by because another team is using the same methods they use to get players they want… wow! Actually this gave me another reason to pause, I remember a post on this forum where someone (cannot recall who now) stated that “players leaving Arsenal must be due to the club because such issues do not arise at Man U” (not verbatim I am sure)…. where are you?

Harris, I’ll prefer Toure to Gallas. Gallas was the main reason we folded up at the end of the season. He flopped against Chesea, MANU and Boro. Draws with MANU and Chelsea and win over Boro is all that we needed to win the title but Gallas was know where to be found.

Goian ain’t English but Romanian. 6′5″, good in the air. He has all the attributes to be a good center back but he already 28 years, only set back I reckon. He kept Anelka & Benzema quiet in France VS Romania. He was a unsang hero in the match. I reckon could only cost 5-7 mil pounds before Euro2008 but probably would cost more than 10 mil if Romania goes into q-final.

NYmarcus, Yes, Tous-La-La – I know, I know, I just prefer my version – might suit us quite well though I agree Lyon are impossible to deal with. Pity, because I sense Wenger hasn’t much liked any of the possible contenders for Flam’s role, which could mean we’ll sign no one at all.
Not sure I agree about France’s chances. Yes, in theory, they’re a perfectly good side (if you drop the hopeless and geriatric Adibal and Sagnol and play Evra, Diarra and, if possible, Flam). Big if, however, because they’ve got a serious horoscope problem. Still, with luck, if Mars moves out of Uranus, or whatever it is that’s freaking Domenech out – Jesus, he’s a fruitcake -they’ll go through and Italy won’t.
Fun Gunner, I don’t think we got Ramsay because we bid more. As I understood it, all three clubs made identical offers, then the player (and his parents) insisted on talking to the managers before making his choice – hence the private jet to Switzerland we laid on. Sounds like he chose us for entirely playerly reasons after speaking with Wenger – which is much to his credit. I’ve seen him play, but only for the ten minutes he got in the FA Cup final. Definitely our type: lovely technique and intelligent-looking but what struck me most was that he seemed so composed for a kid. Dunno his preferred position – playmaker maybe – but I’d guess he’ll end up playing wide, in the style of Hleb and Rosicky, because that seems to be Wenger’s way with central midfielders – he hates pure wingers, preferring to convert the playmaker type who have cleverer feet.

Well, David Villa’s value just jumped 5 million. i thought he would be a great addition to the team even though we don’t really need a striker. He is just so clinical and his runs are so good. He would complement Ade very well — Ade creating the space and Villa getting himself in position to score. Doubt it will happen — too much money and no real need — but Wenger is strange and if he decides this is the man, I suppose he would go for it.
By: California Gooner on June 10, 2008

Mia, lots of people make the same observations that you do about geriatric players in the France squad, etc. The problem is that the key to winning these tournaments is the right balance between youth and experience. Domenech is struggling to find that balance. It’s how Lippi won the wc. Clichy is a wonderful player but it’s understandable to rely on a more experienced int’l player. Can Clichy be relied upon? We saw against Romania that a terrific young striker like Gomis looked lost and out of his depth in his first outing at an int’l tournament.
Most people in France would agree with you that Abidal shouldn’t be in the squad. Evra should be first choice and Clichy behind him. But Domenech’s a very defensive manager and he doesn’t trust attacking fullbacks.

Hiya – yes, I know money wasn’t the reason Ramsey chose Arsenal and that there wasn’t a massive difference in the size of the bids. What I was getting at, was that Cardiff City said that Arsenal’s was the best cash offer. I just thought that, given all the talk about Arsenal’s supposed stinginess as opposed to the free-spending of Man U, it was ironic that we had in fact made the best cash offer.
And I am excited, too. I find these days I look forward to watching the kids overachieve in the Carling Cup as much, if not more, than seeing the first choices in the Premier League games.

3 0f 3 should be a defender. Who, I have no clue
We wait & we wonder…..
