Edelman-weiss, Flamini, Diaby; All Of It Talking In Clichy’s

The departure of Keith Edelman continues to rumble on with Arsene professing surprise at the changes in the Boardroom,

We didn’t expect that and I don’t know why. Does he go somewhere else or has he chosen a different direction? You have to respect that. He has done well in a very difficult period and everybody is conscious of that

It is suggested that Danny Fiszman is the protaganist, miffed at missed signings and asserting his power in the Boardroom. The truth will no doubt out at some point in the future, if it has not already. Those pining for the return of David Dein have had a small prick applied to their balloon for his is an ex-Dein, he has ceased to be and is going to remain pining for the fjords of The Emirates powerbase because Jeremy Corbyn MP has decided he will do everything in his power to stop Alisher Usmanov having anything to do with the club,

Edelman was strongly against foreign ownership at Arsenal and will be missed. I have asked for records of Usmanov’s human rights record in Uzbekistan be made public. I want to keep watching the situation to make sure that Arsenal is safe for the fans

All good PR stuff but can the Right Honourable Gentleman actually do anything about the ownership of the club? He stopped short of saying that but did the most that he probably can in the circumstances by keeping the Uzbek’s, ahem, dubious past in the public eye,

Many people hugely appreciate the football club and look to it and its players as role models and that is why I believe the public needs, and is entitled to know, the character of the person who has bought such a large stake in the club

Not that Jezza is entirely happy with the current owners of Arsenal, blaming Edelman (who he likes, remember) for being one of the key decision-makers in reneging on a ‘promise’ to build a new sports centre in the Borough,

Arsenal are now saying they will just do up the Sobell Centre. It actually means we will have fewer sports facilities than before the new stadium was built. I am determined that any new development contains a new sports centre

A row that could rumble on for some time.

Talking of things rumbling, Arsene has predicted a riot, sorry, an end to the Mathieu Flamini saga this weekend which seems to have gone on longer than The Archers has been running. The media are preparing everyone for his departure by claiming that he has demanded Arsenal match the Milan offer of £144k per week. By a quirk of fate, the net salary is more or less equal to the £85k per week that was reportedly asked for by his ‘crew’ as a gross salary some months ago. Who said that journalists do not have cunning and devious minds? According to The Mail, and this is where the 2+2=5 scenario arrives, Arsene said,

Flamini had 48 hours to decide if he was going to accept Arsenal’s deal which, with loyalty bonuses, would be worth £21m over four years

Hold on, no-one except The Mail has said Arsenal will match the offer. And I do not think that Arsene would have said,

He tells me he wants to stay and I want him to stay, but it will be down to numbers as well and we want to respect our wage structure

Erm, £144k a week is not mentioned by him nor is it showing anything resembling a bow and a scrape or doff of the cap in the direction of the clubs salary structure! Still, it would be nice if the whole thing was sorted this weekend, one way or another. If he does go, Patrick Vieira believes the club has a ready made replacement,

I really like Diaby from Arsenal, he has great qualities even though they play him on the left. However he is a very strong central player

OK so he was talking about his successor - presumably at Internazionale - but if he is good enough to do that, PV4 must believe he is good enough to do it for Arsenal is. Were Diaby to be considered the man for the job, quite feasibly he might edge Flamini out of the national team, a delicious little irony. Leave for pastures new, be replaced by the new model.

Diaby is one whose name is not circulating as the man of the moment, mainly because he is injured so frequently. However, it is the position for which he was signed so perhaps PV4 is not that far off the mark with his suggestion. A final thought of Flamini’s situation. It strikes me that much of the sympathy / goodwill that was generated through his performances and the fact that the club whilst not treating him shabbily, contributed to the current scenario more than just a little bit, has been lost. The player will need to improve on this season’s levels to regain that feeling were he to stay due to the delays and dilly-dallying over the contract. Were he not to do so, I do not think it would be long before detractors start observing that perhaps the club should have let him go this summer.

As the comings and goings begin, at least one player has done his damndest to make everyone aware that he is happy at the club. Step forward Gael Clichy,

I feel that Arsenal are one of the best clubs in Europe so I really hope I will stay there

That’s my boy. And if you are feeling sorry for yourself this day about the lack of trophies, fear not for Gael is hurting bad for you as well,

The first thing is that, in football, you have to entertain people and they want to see good football but of course you cannot be proud of just playing well without winning any trophy. But you have to keep that in mind because that’s amazing to play every home game in front of 60,000 supporters and you have to give credit to the fans.

To be honest I feel really sorry for the fans. I know that next season we’ll be better and we’ve got to win things. That was the time to win something this year because we had a really good season so I really feel bad for them because we let them a little bit down.

Of course you cannot say that you want to play good football for 10 years without winning anything. But I’m sure that if we stick with the game we play and the quality we have, we can do both: entertain people, have pleasure and win trophies

Oh, come on, admit it. You love him just a little bit more but cue the comments that say, “You let us down more than a ‘little bit’”…

Finally, my apologies to Dr Jeff Halperin for not mentioning his site before. Jeff runs an NHS Project on stress - Sort Out Stress - that is specifically aimed at stress and its impact on young men. There is a features section which contains some interesting thoughts on Arsenal this season here.

’til Tomorrow.

So flamini is as they say around my way, an ex-parrott?
I b loving it. keep up the good work

Nice of you to keep posting these blogs so early in the morning Yogi. When my 2 year old wakes me up at an abominable hour I come and take a look.

We’ve got to pin our hopes on Diaby or Denilson. After all, they are, like Flamini, squad players. Unlike Flamini, they haven’t had a consistent run of 25 + games without injury in the 1st team.

There are question marks about Diaby and Denilson, but nobody thought Flamini would make the transition from being a fringe squad player.

For all the negativity about Eboue, last weeks match may signal a new era of playing Eboue and Walcott on the wings, when Hleb and Rosicky are unavailable, which could mean Diaby is given a chance in the middle.

Sorry. Should have said Diaby and Denilson are like Flamini once was, not is, squad players.

Yw

Good post and comment by PV4 but the problem is, Diaby is injury prone and he loses the ball too often to play in the middle. I think Arsene is aware of this that’s why he chooses to play him further away from the middle.

Diaby shows physical presence but that is not translated into defensive abilites. He’s more of an attacking midfielder than a defensive one and coupled with his inability to hold onto the ball, it can be scary playing him in the middle.

For Diaby to be a big candidate in that position, he needs to improve his tackling to refelect his physical presence and learn not to give the ball away.

I have said it all along and ven before the Flamster brike into the side, Diaby & Fabregas could be a formidable midfield partnership! Plus Diaby signed a new deal and constanly says he loves the club, let him play there and see how he does!

Personally I think that Diaby, Fab4 and Denilson could all play there next season and be amazing! If we add one more player to bolster all will be well!!

Howard, Diaby is played on the left because he is quick and has good feet and can cut in and shoot. It is not a matter of him not being good enough for the centre, more a case that he is the best of a limited selection to do a job on the left. You cannot judge how he does in the centre till he has had a run of games there!! This misconception that he cannot tackle is rubbish, watch him play in the reserves, he can tackle.

There are reports coming out of Australia that Arsenal may have signed Mark Milligan, an Australian defender.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23630749-5003460,00.html

With respect to Diaby, it would be a very great shame if Howard’s observation is right, and he can’t hold onto the ball. He seems to have a lot of good attributes, including height, physical stature, ability to dribble etc…

Phil

I think that report of the Aussie is trash. I’m informed by sources there that he’s not any better than what we already have and might no even qualify to be on the bench. At best he may be a squad player.

At this stage, it will be better for Flam to be allowed to look for his ‘pound of flesh’ If its true that he’s already informed is colleagues that he’s leaving, then he loses respect if he stays. Flam is not irreplaceable and Arsene should let him leave.

Again on Diaby, his physical presence does not reflect his strength on the field of play. He’s weak on the ball, loses the ball too often and poor in the tackle. Strength, tackling ability and ball retention are key ingredients for any good defensive midfielder; if you lack that then you’re not a strong candidate for the position.

For all the remaining players, Song can do better in that position than the rest. Song attributes include:

1. Good tackler
2. Strength and even pace
3. Excellent ball retention

Diaby can rather develop to play in Cesc role rather than Denilson.

For me, the obvious replacement for Flamini within the squad is Song.

He is strong on the ball, and in the air.

He is one of our most creative midfielders (as shown by his time in the reserves and at Charlton), and he isn’t scared to go in hard on the tackle.

People mistake his loping run for a lack of pace and laziness.

Imo, that assumption is as a result of laziness itself, i.e. the lack of effort in finding out more about the player and just “going with the flow” when the bandwagon was careering along and lining him up as a punch bag (Gooners have a history of this btw, Eboue is on the receiving end of it right now, and it isn’t very clever).

I was interested in the latter stages of the game against Reading, where Song started going forward quite a bit, with Bert dropping back.

Song looked very, very good in the middle, with a lot of very accurate and astute passes.

If Cesc and Song were our CM pairing, I think we would be closest to replicating the dual “box to box” combo we used to have with Patrick and Manny”.

Less than a year ago, Song was seen as the joke of the squad, a useless utility player with nothing outstanding to offer just taking up space. Now he’s a reliable and efficient team player with huge potential.

The crazy world of Arsenal.

Yes, Blackstock, but I think the joke is on the bandwagon fans who climbed on without thinking and without doing any research.

A certain Arseblogger and Amy Lawrence spring to mind……………………………

Blimey,

I am finding myself agreeing with Howard, about a player.

Diaby, at present is too loose with the ball to play the DM role. I see him as the natural stand-in for Cesc or Hleb in the behind the striker role in a 4-5-1.

I concur with Mike about Song. He really is a strong boy, is the nearest in perpetual motion to Flamini, & most importantly wants the ball, distributing it simply. Still prone to the odd dangerously lose ball.

Song & Denilson will step up, next season, whether Flamini stays or not. Djourou is another, who needs to make an impression. All 3 are exceptional quality players, who have to show they also have what it takes to consistently shine, at this level.

Below them we have Lansbury, Randall & I like the look of Jay Thomas. They are probably variously 2/3 years away yet.

If Flamini goes, I think we should try to keep Gilberto or get an older pro, who can do a similar job.

Spend the big money on a dominant CB & a creative player.

“You let us down more than a ‘little bit’”…
Yes Monty Warrior, unfortunately that is how accumulating 80 odd points is seen these days.

I wish I had your confidence about the Norwegian Orange, but fear there is still some life in the old bird yet.

Diaby is also on the left in order to develop his all round game, including his left foot. I’ve heard him say that many times and that he is happy to do that. Perhaps you should check your facts before posting your assumptions Howard.

Diaby was recently used in the middle in the reserves, so perhaps Wenger is thinking it’s time to start deploying him there in case Flamini leaves. His misfortune has been the number of injuries he has had since that career threatening tackle. It would be great if he could finally shake them off and we could see more than the few glimpses of what he is really able to do.

I agree with you Mike that with a run of games in the middle Song could be the Flamini replacement if needed. He is a strong tackler, heads the ball quite well and is a good passer. He has the attributes to be an all rounder as he will help out in defence and attack as we saw in the ACN.

As for writing off players before they’ve had a chance, it seems clear that some Arsenal fans will never learn no matter how many times they turn out to be wrong and Wenger turns out to be right about their quality.

song for captain!!!!!

Blackstock, there’s nothing crazy about it. Young players develop. Not all of the young guns are going to make it to the first team, but because of our investment, significantly more will make the grade through our system than at other clubs.

With all objectivity, I’ve never known us have so many hot young prospects before. A whole load will be going out on loan come August. And we can sell the players that aren’t Arsenal standard.

A year ago gooners were blindly slating Song. But Ask Charlton fans. In the team that went down in 2007, he really stood out as a class player.

I hate this talks about Flamini this Flamini that …so many players have past through Arsenal ( Anelka is a reference point here) and the team never die ..he can go if he wishes to..it all goes to show how ungrateful he is and I am very sure we have able replacements in Diaby and Dennilson.Kolo Toure and Song can aslo do the Job ( Yes I am sure)..I will hope Wenger will focus on his preseason and no one Flamini..any soccer lover who will like to interact with other fans and dicuss any soccer related issues should check out Soccer fan base dot com it is free to join.

Hi guys, I live in Sydney & while I quite like Milligan he is not Arsenal standard beyond Carling Cup squad. Strange though, as The Australian newspaper that is quoted is a very respectable paper & not prone to gossip or articles without reasonable basis.

Adam,

Thanks for this.

Yes, there appeared to be at least 3 articles from the Australian press, including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and the Gold Coast News.

This seems a bit more substantial that the wag the other day who posted a report about Arsenal signing Dimitrov, with absolutely nothing to substantiate it whatsoever.

Perhaps Milligan would be a backup utility defender, in the same vain as Hoyte.

I agree with Howard & Flint about Diaby.

He`s exceptionally gifted at most things , especially drifting past people but doesn`t seem to know when to release the ball or want to play it simple.

Hopefully that will come in time but at present he`s not ready for CM in a two.

Song is very promising & looks better game by game.

He may well be the answer to play alongside Cesc next season but with Flam leaving I would keep Gilberto now & spend big on a CB & creative player (again agreeing with Flint)

hello, i’m an american arsenal fan and avid reader of your blog.

i was wondering wouldn’t van der vaart fit the bill for an effective left attacking midfielder? i’ll be the first to admit that being in this huge football void that is los estados unidos probably has me a bit out of touch, but he seems a quality player.

anyways, thanks for giving me reading material and insight.

-chris

Castro,

Van Der Vaart is a good call and in a way would be a typical Wenger signing as he hasn`t been linked with us at all.

The fact he can shoot (I remember the cracker he scored for Hamburg at The Emirates) means he could be the goal scoring midfielder we are looking for.

I can’t believe that we had all the title rapped for an Emirates lap of honour and we blew it.

All that Arsene needed to do in January when Kolo left was to bring in a new centre back. He rather chose to rely on Djourou (not good enough) who came injured. Kolo came back injured/flopped, Gallas and Senderos flopped and we lost the title and the CL.

Is Arsene not interested in winning a trophy anymore?

well wenger needs to pull another gem out of the bag coz if we have diaby or song or denilson in the center all season i cant see us wining the league!

they are all good players but not the top players we need to win!

For me it still hurts seeing MANU rapping up the title once more. Arsene don’t want to spend but MANU will recoup all money spent from prize money and merchandise.

We actually lost the title during the January window opening and Arsene arrogantly refused to bring a centre back when it was obvious that we needed one.

How was Wenger supposed to know Kolo`s form would suffer after the ACN ?

He was fine after the 2006 event when we went on the the CL Final.

Senderos or Djourou were supposed to step in during his absence & Senderos did pretty well initially at least but Djourou`s & then Song`s injuries left us short when form was lost.

To bring in a new CB in January would have been a hindrance.

I can`t remember Arsene ever buying a defender in January before & you have to remember we were top of the league at the time.

It`s all too easy in hindsight.

Paul

‘It’s all too easy in hindsight’

He was pressured to buy a CB in January and even the press questioned him but his answer was to recall Djourou. However, we all knew from Djourou’s performance with Birmingham City that he wasn’t good enough, likewise Senderos as a substantive CB. Senderos is always a nervous wreck and unsure of what to do when he attacks the ball.

Very painful but its history now. That was our best chance for years and we couldn’t grap it.

Next year is going to be tougher, every club is strengthening even the Spurs are.

I disagree. my criticism of wenger was allowing Toure and Gallas to play the whole season. I think they played to their absolute maximum for several months. we were lucky they had played so well for so long. that sort of run never lasts and I dont expect them to be a good pair next season either. the back up players ie Senderos, was not good enough and no one else had the required experience. I never feel comfortable when we defend set pieces or any sort of long ball. any real pressure on us ends in a goal. our centre backs are no better than the teams in the relegation zone, such as Birmingham and Fulham.
the reason we concede fewer than them is due to our forwards having far more possession than the other team in every game. if the other team dont have the ball they cant score - but when we dont have it, we are always in trouble.

his other big error was selling Diarra.

I’m with Howard and Mike on Song as a partner to Cesc for all the attributes they mentioned. I would like to also add that many of us including me didn’t really think that Song can make it at Arsenal.

Yet Wenger proved me and Song doubters wrong “Again”. All Song needed was time, the loan spell, playing in CB helped him greatly as well.

Most of us think that Wenger plays some players out of position because he just like to convert them to something else. I see it as part of their training, when a defensive midfielder like Song plays in CB, he now can see if the DM in front of him doesn’t do his job, how the CB behind him will suffer the consequences. It’s all part of the training process, and understanding your position and your job.
===

I don’t think we have a huge problem if Flamini goes. I think the problem will remain a CB problem. Also don’t forget if Vela comes back and does well, Diaby will not be needed on the left and he can be Cesc back-up. Walcott also plays a lot better on the left because it’s easier for him to cut in to his right better foot and shoot like he did with Derby (playing him as RW was again a training method to force him to cut in on his weaker left foot, I don’t think he managed that).

We are not in crisis, and we still only need a couple of good players, one of them is a CB. The other one could be a left winger which also can free Rosicky to play in midfield and rest Cesc in some games.

Can’t wait for next season, I just wish I can blink through the summer month and escape the Doom and Gloom mongers.

G4E

I watched Diarra play today and he was absolute gold coated crap wrapped in sh*t. Diarra is gone and any player who didn’t want to stay and fight for his place can go f8ck himself somewhere far away from us or at least from me.

Adding to my comment about Diarra above, I think Wenger done the right thing, and profited the club 3 million in less than 6 months.

When your player tells you he’s not available for a game because he’s too busy finding another employer, what are you suppose to do? You kick his ass out the door with no regret whatsoever.

A professional would be available for his employer till the last minute of his contract. Diarra demonstrated immaturity, and unprofessionalism that may hurt him in the future.

G4E

CB stupid. I don’t know who we’re getting but a new CB is a must. Toure/Gallas combination don’t work. The second strings are also not good enough; I’m convinced that Arsene has now realised that Djourou/Senderos support can’t be relied on.

The best CB’s are in the east and the balkans so that is where we should go. The Skrtel’s, Vidic’s and the Agger’s.

Do you think Richards has what it takes to be a good CB?

Richards is a good promissing player and certainly can fit in the Arsenal mold. The problem Howard is I don’t thin Wenger or Arsenal will pay more than a 7-8 millions in a defender especially that Richards is not on the same level let’s as Sagna?

There is no way we will get Richards for 7 miilion, most likely his club will ask for 15-20 and to be honest this is the price of 2 to 3 players in Wenger’s book.

** Ok, here is the updated version of my last post :)

Richards is a good promising player and certainly can fit in the Arsenal mold. The problem Howard is I don’t think Wenger or Arsenal will pay more than a 7-8 millions in a defender especially that Richards is not on the same level let’s say as Sagna?

There is no way we will get Richards for 7 million, most likely his club will ask for 15-20 and to be honest this is the price of 2 to 3 players in Wenger’s book.

What is all this talk about Richards. He is a Chelsea player in waiting. He likes his nights in the nightclubs so would be a regular in Chinawhites with the Chelsea mob.

Wenger picked some of the best English talent coming through he didn’t have to pay nothing for them except Walcott. The only problem is Howard have no patience to wait for them. He wants ready made, already over hyped English players, and Arsenal and Arsene don’t have the means to splash the cash just to buy those English branded players.

Maybe we should tattoo some of our foreign players with the English flag on the back of their necks………would that work Howard?? :)

G4E/Steve

Richards is a die hard Arsenal fan and will readily come for us. Spending 15-20 on a player who is good, at only 19 and English won’t be a bad idea for the following reasons:

1. At 19, he’ll play for us for about 12-13 years if he turns out to be good as we all presume.

2. If he takes us to another finals of the champions league, we will earn more than we spent on him; this is one issue Arsene don’t get. More trophies, more money. MANU winning the league will pay all funds spent on Nani, Anderson and Carrick, true.

2. Being English, there will be a big media hype that will culminate in shirt sales, big time. I suspect Adams sold a lot of shirts in a year than Toure/Gallas combined this year.

3. The conspiracy theory of media biase will definitely abate.

On the business side, it could be a good venture both on and off the field.

G4E

I’m informed Arsene has already picked the guy to replace Flam. His name is Stepane Sessenon, a 23 years old a defensive midfielder from Benin. Benin is a country that has common border with Togo. Adebayor’s country.

I hear Stephane is a tough tackler and has a nack for goals. He plays for Le Mens and will come for 4 million. Very cheap.

Who knew Sagna? Another coup by Arsene.

Howard buddy, read this again, can you find anything wrong with your reason #1?

“1. At 19, he’ll play for us for about 12-13 years if he turns out to be good as we all presume.”

You want us to pay 15-20 million dollars and then say “if” he turns out to be good? Don’t you think you want to be sure before you soend 20 million of the very little money you have?

We all presume, but there is no guarantees, Reyes seemed to be a very good buy for the price we paid, but then he didn’t work out.

Come on man, be a little careful with our money. It seems your way would work better with Ibrahimvichi’s money :)

Howard, if your read the comments section on the site you got your news from, you will find that I already commented there on Stephane Sessegnon from Benin.

Who is your informer? The Gooner Fourm! :) click on my name for the link

G4E

I read it somewhere yesternight on another blog. If Arsene wants him then he must be good a la Sagna.

There was one aspect of my post that you missed. MANU would be able to pay all amount spent on Carrick, Nani, Hargreaves and Anderson because winning the league and getting to the CL finals will bring in tons of money.

We thought we will beat them on the financial side last year but they earned more all because of the title they won and this year, their earnings will hit the roof.

An their debt remains the same. So if their American owners decide to back the bags, they will be in deep sh*t.

Is Walcott not English enough for now? :)

==

This Sessegnon has Arsene written all over him, but still this is just an article in a forum. Normally we would hear about it after he already signed, so I will not hold my breath.

sorry I meant pack the bags :) it’s 1:45 am here.

Gunner4ever

Micah Richards maynot be AW style type of signing but 19 to 20 mio pounds gamble is almost as big at Walcott at 12 to 16 mio pounds. Both has attributes needed to do their respective jobs and I have seen Richards play under proper guidance he will be big. Him being English has nothing to do with why I say we should sign him but an added bonus. He is fast , strong, tall and big. Good tackler and header of the ball and his recovery speed is phenomenal so no one can turn him easily. Manure spent 23 mio pounds for Rio Ferdinand and he has been rock solid and one of the main reason Manure has one hand on the EPL and CL this season. They concede least even lower than Chel$ki at 22 versus Arse at 31 and Chel$ki at 25. At the end of the day it may not be Micah Richards( but I will do my utmost to get him) but some one else but spending 19 to 20 mio pounds for a world class CB is worth every cent as it wins you titles and trophies.

It was not hind sight back in January when some of us were clamouring for a a CB. We were thin interms of quality in that particular area ,Sendy was not up to mark this season at least. He may eventually come good but not yet and hence we are nearly men again.

Up the Arse!!! Au THe Arse!!! Up The Arse!!!

diaby’s made of glass, lamentably.

It might be that we’ll need like 3 more players next season. wonder who the lucky players AW’ll end up bringing to be a part of the magic @ AFC?

Can’t wait….
