Derby County 2 – 6 Arsenal
0 – 1 Bendtner (24)
1 – 1 McEveley (30)
1 – 2 van Persie (39)
1 – 3 Adebayor (59)
2 – 3 Earnshaw (76)
2 – 4 Walcott (79)
2 – 5 Adebayor (81)
2 – 6 Adebayor (90)
Three very welcome points that draw Arsenal to within four of the summit. Arsene was true to his word and rang the changes through the team for this match and was rewarded with four different scorers against the Premier League’s whipping boys.
When Arsene said that he was planning for next season already and would be rotating the squad accordingly, not many would have put the midfield together that he did. Denilson in the centre, supporting the newly-crowned Young Player of the Year, Cesc Fabregas with notionally Eboue and Walcott on the flanks although the fluidity of the Arsenal positional play renders that somewhat irrelevant.
If the opening parries and thrusts threatened an even game, there were sufficient warnings for Derby that this would not be their night for glory. Beset by defensive problems all season, Arsenal ensured their woeful run continued when Bendtner intercepted a pass from Moore to free van Persie, who returned the compliment allowing the Dane to take his time and pick his spot to break the deadlock.
The lead did not last. Savage’s freekick enabled Moore and McEveley to out jump Song and Gallas, the ball squirming behind the two Arsenal defenders, McEveley reacting quickest to fire home. Would a more experienced ‘keeper than Fabianski have come for the cross in the first place? He certainly thought about before retreating to his line. This is the sort of experience he needs to gain before pressurising Almunia effectively for a starting line-up place.
Parity might have been restored but the gulf between the two teams was becoming more evident, emphasised when van Persie controlled Toure’s long pass and stroked the ball home five minutes before half-time. It was to be his final telling contribution before being replaced by Emmanuel Adebayor. Cristiano Ronaldo revealed that the Togolese forward was his choice as Player of the Year (well, he cannot vote for himself). Adebayor provided the central focus of the second half if he was not perhaps the outstanding individual. That ‘accolade’ belongs to Theo Walcott. Just under an hour played and he made a mockery of Stubbs, leaving the defender sprawling helplessly on the turf before pulling the ball back to Eboue. Stumbling over the ball and stifling a cry of ‘Penalty!’, it squirmed to Adebayor who had the simplest of tasks to score.
Robert Earnshaw reduced the deficit with fifteen minutes left, Gallas and Toure bisected by a pass that allowed the Welshman to finish. It brought about the barnstorming finish that the Derby fans would have dreaded. It could hardly be said that the hosts were pushing forward in search of an equaliser such was the short time between Earnshaw scoring and Walcott picking the ball up thirty yards out before moving into the area to curl the ball into the far corner. No challenge of any note was made on Walcott and that is the epitaph of Derby’s season.
Barely had they got their heads around the two-goal deficit being restored than it was a three-goal gap. Hitting Derby on the counter-attack, Clichy outsprinted the defence to curl a pass into Adebayor’s path to finish. The hattrick goal arrived when Fabregas topped off a good couple of days with a pass that bisected the defence from well inside the Arsenal half. Adebayor gave it the finish it deserved by rounding the keeper and slotting home.
Six goals away from home are not as important as the three points. It has left a tangible improvement compared to last season – third place. It is worth also noting that if United win the title, they will do so on the back of a phenomenal home record. To date, they dropped just five points which has covered their away record. Arsenal and Chelsea have both ‘wasted’ double that number of points at home, despite both being unbeaten.
Post match, Arsene was purring,
I love this team, love the way they behave and the way they play
Poetry in motion might have been an apt description for the second half. The manager noted that Adebayor took advantage of the hard work carried out in the opening forty-five minutes. He also emphasised his desire to keep the squad together,
This team for me has a good future. We have seventy-seven points and we wanted to win our three games remaining this season. The team is stronger than at the start of the season but we went through a difficult period in March and have paid for it.
The price has been hard but it is part of the learning curve. Given the paucity of the opposition last night, there is little point in looking for negatives; experience has been gained by some, confidence returned to others, positives for the next campaign. It was in any case, good to see Walcott produce the sort of performance that we have been led to expect. Other plus points were the return to fitness of Denilson and Djourou; some depth returning to the squad.
That Arsene will buy in the summer is of little doubt, the man himself has said he will be strengthening. Where those players will fit in depends on the outcome of this week with Flamini and keeping Hleb for one more season at least.
I’m going to enjoy the day following last night’s win. ‘til Tomorrow.

I Thought Bendtner had an excellent game playing behind Adebayor. Reminded me of Ray kennedy in his Anfield midfield guise.
Excellent thinking and incisive passes. A different role for him? Seemed to get on well with his team mates as well. The setanta commentator even stopped pointing out that he “..didn’t get on with adebayor..” after he passed to him for the fifth time.

I am quite happy that the team seemed to really enjoy the game. It is one comment Gallas made when he arrived, that the Arsena players enjoy thier footy.
We only got 6? I was expecting 12 Cos I am expecting Chelsea and Man U to draw their remaining matches which will take us level on points, so goal diff will be crucial.
Up the Gunners. We are on our way to collecting back our trophy. All that luck come on out in a deluge, you have stayed back long enough cos there is much to be evened out for us this season.

A good performance but it was against the worst side to ever grace the premier league after they have been relegated and we have nothing to play for and no pressure!!
Taking nothing from the performance but lets put it in perspective before we all go on a high about how amazing we are and how many trophies we are going to win next year!!

This match gave Wenger the chance to excel at Wengerspin at his best. Against a team that has no defense, and the worst scoring record, we conceded two goals and scored six, but in the first half the performance was more like we played like we did away against Middlesborough. The second half they were exhausted so Adebayore got his hat trick, but we missed many other golden opportunities to at least equal MANU goal difference,Ades dancing with Ebuoe after his goals made me sick, with his ego and having scored 30 goals we can expect new pay demands from his agent. Bentdner and Theo combined well, and Theos goal showed what he can do next season. and Bentdner did his best to provide Ade with lots of service so at least it seems that have patched up their differences. RVP once again was hit with an injury and Wenger must allow for him and Rosicky not playing a full season, and strengthen accordingly, good to see Djouru back and looking fit, as well as Denilson. Song is more of a DM than CB but for me Fabianski is tooweak handling set pieces he never catches the ball, always punches out, he made 2 good saves, but his ball handling is still as awkward as before. Lets win the last 2 games and hope Wigan beat MANU and Newcastle beat Chelsea.

You beat the opposition that is put in front of you. That’s it. End of story.
WTF does this mean?
“Ades dancing with Ebuoe after his goals made me sick with his ego and having scored 30 goals we can expect new pay demands from his agent”
Do not project your own image onto the player and assume the worst. The guy has done his job, beating most people’s expectations. He’s allowed to have a big ego on that basis. Has his representative said that he wants more money? Do you know what his salary is? Maybe he is happy with his lot right now. Not all footballers are in it for the money. And more to the point, who is to say that the Board and Manager are not happy paying him more?

Arsene Wenger’s inability to sign a decent keeper is inexplicable. Whenever I’ve seen Fabianski play he has looked innefectual and deeply suspect under the high ball. He can stop shots not question though. Almunia and Lehman have been alright – but not greats. But would we not have been better off with say Brad Friedel in goals for the last five years?
Anyway at least the Arsenal’s second choice Pole Sceszny looks like he will make the grade.
Final point – no Flaminia, no Hleb, no problem!

The statistic that worried me last night was Derby the worst team ever in top flight football scored as many goals against us as Man Utd and Chelsea.Yes we scored 6,it could and should have been 12.But when a team as poor as Derby can score twice against us questions have to be asked about our defence. We need a new centre half next season.Plus a world class keeper.Fabianski looked poor against crosses.
RVP injured again,Why are we not suprised?

Too much emphasis has been put on that statistic. It is an ‘end of season’ game that does not matter whether you concede 2 or 3 so long as you score more. If you are going to gripe, why not praise as well for scoring 6? United managed 1 – 0 or 2- 1 which was hardly exhilarating.
Jesus. What more do people want? Scoring six goals away from home would be something most people would enjoy!

Guys, we dont know exactly what RVP’s injury is but I thought he looked like he hurt himself sliding on his knees celebrating the goal. There was just a little grimace there, rememer when paddy did the same?
Maybe someone should tell him to stop celebrating as he got injured celbrating the goal against Manure too!!
Hopefully now some people will shut up about Ade – 30 goals and for some reason that is still not enough for some gooners!
I thought his dance was actually a piss-take of what Earnshaw had done earlier, or did I miss something. If he is happy and he wants to dance after every goal let him especially if he keeps getting 30 a season!
If he walked off without celebrating you lot would say he was sulking and wanted to move!!!

Nobody is jumping up and down about next season and what we will or will not do. If you cannot enjoy a 6 – 2 away win, when will you enjoy football? When a trophy is won? If that is the only time people are happy, watching football must be one hell of a chore.

Yes, the defence did look suspect. Yes, Derby are the bottom team. Yes, we have another season without trophies. But cast your mind back to the start of the season and think about third place (maybe higher) in the premiership, a quarter-final place in the CL, semi-finals in CC and the same in the FA. It would have looked good then – were we not supposed to lose our CL place to the Spurs and be even further behind than the 2006-2007?
For God’s sake people, we are third in the PL. Maybe not good enough, but better than the last two years. I am sure the team is going to use this finish as a base next year, and try to do even better.
I think a lot of you are bitter because we led the table for so long and if we had even drawn against ManU and Chelsea we would be so much closer to the top. Well, sh*t happens.

for a title aspiring team, conceding 2 goals to the bottom team is not acceptable, and that summarises and explains our season
sure, we should also enjoy the 6 goals that we scored but things have to be put in perspective, that there’s little pressure now, so to speak, however, we did seem to handle it (pressure) well when we were in pole position going into the last stint — and that’s what it counts
just imagine the margin to the top 2… it’s those few little points we shouldn’t have lost here and there carelessly… we would have been at least able to realistically charge for, if not already sealed, the title!

So the Arsenal back four weren”t really trying last night as it was an end of season game and it doesn”t matter that a team as poor as Derby scored two goals against us.That has been a big problem this season our failure to hold on to leads and keep clean sheets. If we had held on to the one goal leads at OT we would be champions. But never mind there”s always next season.

Here they come the Doom Mongers, Yw you are wasting your time trying to argue with them. They are so right and full of their own importance that perhaps if they hate the team so much and can find so much fault perhaps it would be better if they supported another team. Drew 10 mate you are right but your beating your head against the wall trying to convince these Boof heads anything. I atach the follwing article for the dim wits Doom Mongers to read but I already know I’m wasting my time. I must say that young Theo’s goal what a cracker that boy will be a star. Richard Craniums read and weep
The first player to score two hattricks against the same opposition within the same season, ever. The first player other than Thierry Henry in donkey’s years to score 30 in a season for Arsenal.
To reiterate – a 30-goal a season striker.
His name is Adebayor. He is 24 years old. He’s from Lome, Togo.
And everyone wants to get rid of him.
To be fair, the word ‘everyone’ is a bit of a broad brush to stroke across the myriad of Arsenal supporters out there. But read the comments of Arsenal blogs and forums around the net – dominated by pubescent, Championship Manager addicts – and you would forgive me for getting a hint of that impression.
Sure, next season he should aim for 20 goals and take it from there (second-season syndrome can be a nasty mistress), but what Emmanuel has achieved this season is phenomenal.
Thirty goals. Count them, you impatient temprementals out there. Thirty goals.
“But hark! Six of those – twenty percent – came against Derby!”, I hear you shout.
No-one took Fernando Torres’ hattrick that he scored against the same opposition away from him. No-one even mentions how he did not score against Derby the second time round.
Not to take anything away from the force of nature that is Fernando. It’s just that, well, our own Togolese gladiator has scored the exact same amount of goals in all competitions. Leading the line on his own. Under the disproportionate heckling and unfair pressure sustained by ungrateful, Johnny-come-lately Arsenal ‘fans’.
The PFA acknowledge him, my life-long Manchester United-supporting uncle fears him, and my Liverpool mates shake their heads with a muted disbelief that Arsenal fans are the way they are given the amount of goals the young forward scores.
How many goals would Benzema or Huntelaar have scored in this season, were they playing for Arsenal? Adebayor’s power, hard-work, troublesome dribbling and all-action displays make him one of the world’s top strikers. Like it or not.
He has his faults, but he’s young, still. Tractor-comparisons are unfair, given his other qualities. He’s a match winner, a storm-trooper, a rolling boulder. Very few defences have proved to be an Indiana Jones in the face of his efforts.
This certainly is a season to remember for young Ade. He will only get better. That is frightening.
He’s scored 30 goals for Arsenal. Arsenal fans bemoan his ‘mere presence’ on the field. That too, is frightening.
Thats if you can

Yes, good result to boost the players confidence.
And happy to see Djourou and Denilson back!
I fought Denilson had a dessent game for a lad who has hardly been given a start in the first team this season (7).
. Fabiansky(6): had two very good stops, then may be guilty on Derby first goal on decision making, but Bentner should have cleared the ball.
He needs more games to be juged on.
.Gallas(6): Derby second goal I thought it was outside goal; similar mistake from our CB on Aliadiere’s goal at the Emirates. Gallas may need a rest in my opinion.
. Toure(7): making progres at RB, with a good cross on RVP ’s goal.
. Clichy(7): always on top of his game; although needing to improve on his crossing.
.Song(7): This lad is really showing why AW couldn’t give up on him while under pression from fans to shop him. But as him and Gallas being short in height, I would want to see Song as CM and AW goes out to buy a tall and strong new CB.
.Fabregas(8): amusing how this lad reads the game so well; hardly put any foot wrong.
.Theo(6): brobably one of our best passers; could have scored 3 goals and make 5 assists. He scored one goal, made one assist and did little assisting Clichy at LB. Theo still needs to improve on his 90′ overhaul play as I am still suspecious of him holding too much on the ball, wanting to beat ppl while a simple pass could achieve the same goal.
.Eboue(6): not a natural winger for me; very poor decision making when close to the opposition box(crossing too early, while only one man is surrounded by defenders), could approach more the box, allowing more ppl in and make a pass behind the wall for late running midfielders to score. You don’t have to cross automatically as soon as you receive the ball, unless someone is clearly available. Overhaul performance, a dessent player.
.RVP(5): scored one; missed 3 or 4 and unable to dispossess anyone. May be needs a rest, as he still looks weak for me.
.Bentner(7): had a dessent game; clever inter-play and really looks like a genuine striker. He still needs to improve on mental strentgh with more desire to show that he is ready for a starter.
.Ade(7): He could get 8 or 9 if I was juging him on goals he scores; but they are other issues where he doesn’t seem to make any progress for me, his ball control and passing; may be his goal celebration as well(he doesn’t often care much about ppl who assist him scoring).
.Gilberto(6): dessent display; but I thought Denilson did better than him.

Well Said Old Timer
I just dont get the Ade hating
I know he can be frustrating at times but look at how much he has developed in the last 12 months. People moan that some of his goals are tap-ins and anyone could score them, well not just anyone gets themselves in those positions in the first place,
Why can they think of a Huntelaar or Benzema alongside Ade instead of replacing him.
Ade is a legend and long may it continue
By: pattegooner on April 29, 2008

Ade has done well in his third season, recalling that he scored only 12 last season. At the beginning of the season some of us doubted Ade’s potency but he’s proved us wrong.
Ade is capable of scoring 40+ goals a season. In fact if he had been a little more clinical Ade could have scored 5 yesterday.
He has three key weaknesses he has work on next season.
Number 1 is finishing; his finishing still needs hard work
Number 2 is shooting. He rarely shoots around the 18, 20 and 22 yards area. He needs also to develop this capability to become an all round striker
Number 3 is one-on-one. In a one on one situation, a player is better of using the toe to allow the ball to rise slightly.
Ronaldinho and Ronaldo (AC Milan) are masters in using the toe and it yields good result.
By: Howard on April 29, 2008

got to agree that moaning about last night seems rather ridiculous, there were areas that need improving that we all know about, but any 6 2 win away at any team has to be appluaded, especially when 12 would have been equally reasonable.
any player that scores 30 should not be started on. no one thought he would do that this year. he has areas to improve but has all the ingredients to be a great player.
By: dan on April 29, 2008

I actually think last nights results can hansomely be used as a picture of our entire season:
Hatrick from Ade – 30 goals in a season at 24, he is already a superstar in world football.
Conceding 2 goals – Our central defense is weak, needs improving. Needs experience and some class.
Ade needs a world class strike partner – All the opportunities RVP had, he should have a hatrick himself.
Fab – He must stay at our club he is our heart and brain in one organ!!!
Eboue – Must go, he is the tumour of our team.
Gilberto – Over the hill.
In summary one of the greatest footballing sides in Europe but our percentagesare not good enough! The quote by everyone, we should have had 12!! 50% is good enough when you have 12 chances and score 6 but not if you get 2 chances and score one. Especially with a weak defense that cant hold onto the league. Our shooting to scoring ratio must increase in my eyes. We make so many opportunities!!!

Yogi based on Ades past history in Monaco and with the Togolese world cup team and his agents recent comments I think he will start asking for 5ok or more I read when he signed his last contract he had doubled form his original 20 K. As for his dancing with Ebuoe, I thought first he should thank team mates for the pass, and forget Ebuoe who once again couldnt see where the goal joining in it was fine for Henry to do it with Ade but Ebuoe should learn how to play before he does all the dancing

Adebayor was not the only one who rightly stood up for themselves during the World Cup. It was a case that he had the highest profile and therefore acted as a media focal point.
And I’ll say it again, so what if he asks for £50k and gets it? He’s earned an increase this season. In any case, how do you know that his contract does not already have such an increase built in if he hits targets? You’re arguments against him are, if I may be so bold, are only indicative of the contempt in which you hold him and have nothing constructive to say regarding his football.
Eboue? So what if he celebrated. If he had made a meaningful contact on the ball it would have been blocked by the defender. Guarantee the lad will be given the assist in tomorrow’s Telegraph Fantasy Football.

I mean Ade is good but he still misses too many scoring chances.
Santa Cruz has scored 21 EPL goals playing at Blackburn, right? Using varied approach, headers, tap-ins, shooting beyond 18 yards etc a complete striker I must say.
Ade has done great but we still need someone to support him. He’s predictable, no plan B.
Any good striker playing with this group of players could score 25/30/35 premiership goals a season. The team’s ability to create makes scoring easier which can be well exploited by complete strikers like Drogba and Santa Cruz.
Ade deserve praise; he’s done well but he should lower down his ego.

Wenger cannot make the mistake some people on this forum are making. If we do not strengthen next season we will finish 3rd again.
We need a top class keeper
A Centre half who can dominate like Vidic
Two midfielders if Flamini and Helb leave
A WINGER- NOT BLOODY EBOUE
A partner for Ade- Eduardo wont play till the near year if he is lucky. And Rvp is always likely to pick up injuries
Sorry if i upset some people on here but i want to see Arsenal picking up trophies not Man U or Chelsea.Up until the Reading game we won 3 out of 13 games yet the reason was bad refereeing decisions and injuries. This site should be for debating not views of rose tinted glasses wearing gooners who stick up for Arsene at every oppurtunity. He has made mistakes this season afd fans should be able to voice this without being shouted down as not being loyal and moaners.

the problem with the forwards are the unknown’s of when will EDS be back and how well recovered and will we ever geta full season from RVP. if both those are positive then he will not buy a forward if he has doubts then maybe. however he has stated many times that walcott and bendtner will step further forward next year and no new forwards are coming, so i think people are wasting their mental energy expecting a shiny new huntelaar for example because it isn’t going to happen.

GO AND SUPPORT MAN UNITED, plastic! Arsenal don’t need haters like you! I’m sick to death of these brainless f–king gloryhunters.
I have never been nor am I know a huge fan of Ade the way other gooners are, I’ve had many criticisms of him and continue to. But geezus h christ, WTF does he have to do to get some credit?!?! Fans of other clubs and professional players and managers all over Europe certainly do rate him.
How many Arsenal players have scored a hattrick TWICE against the same team in the same season?
Ade was never meant to be our first striker. He is MEANT to be a support striker. Given the fact that he’s been our man up front for a good chunk of the season, given the fact that he makes very stupid decisions, lives offside, has a bad first touch, it’s really quite extraordinary what he’s achieved.
Think of Drogba at the age of 23-24. Do you think he was scoring 30 goals in one season? The most he ever scored at that age for Marseille was around 19 goals. And he was named French player of the year at that time.
And I can’t believe people have already decided Fabianksi is crap. How old is this kid? How many games has he played?
I really don’t believe you people. Yeah, Derby are a crap team. So why did the invincible god-like Man United struggle so hard to score one f–king goal against them?
Yes, our defense yesterday was absolutely woeful, so what else is new? What kills me is that Gallas is a player who’s won the title twice and recently he’s been making some very childish defensive mistakes. What the hell is going on in his head?
Anyway, if you so f–king hate our manager and players THEN WHY THE HELL ARE YOU EVEN WATCHING ARSENAL AND READING THIS BLOG?! Go and support the chavs or the superior Liverpool with their tactical genius of a manager who can’t even manage a serious challenge for the league in all the years he’s been working in England.

I agree with you that Arsene is human. He made huge mistake in January when he decided not strengthen the CB position but recalled Djourou.
For all the opportunities given to Senderos to take the CB for good, he always flops in the big games.
2007-CC finals, FA semi-finals with Blackburn
2008-CL with Serville, CL with Pool
Arsene shouldn’t falter this time to bring a better stopper for CB with mobility and strength in the air.
If not we’re doomed relying on Gallas, Senderos and Djourou. We need someone big and better to partner Kolo in the middle of the defence. Gallas can be used across the defensive line

What a joke!! hah!! beating bottom club and celebrating like winning the title!!!????
Try telling to your cesc that its ok, no trophies, no problem… just play BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL just to satisfy the fans,.. thats all they care for. .. and it wont be long that cesc will leave arsenal.
Hey, dumbos!! DIDNT you read him saying he’s envious about the CL semi-finalists?? Why?? Because they play better beautiful football??? Dont kid yourselves please! Cesc wants trophies – he said this many times!!! What the use of beautiful game without trophies?? Might as well be a circus!!

Please don’t bring age issue here. Its very controversial; Ade may well be 27/28 instead of the 24 being bandied about.
Oba Martins at 23 is not true. I read somewhere that his junior brother is 28 and has a son who’s 9 years.
African players’ age are always doctored to secure long term contracts in Europe. Its nothing to believe. Take my word, Ade’s actual age may be around 28.

I read this blog looking for some honest debate not a blinkered Arsenal TV view that everything is rosey and there is nothing wrong at Arsenal. We had a 5pt lead with 9 ganes to go.We lost it because the squad was not big enough. That is a fact.We should all be disappointed we threw away the league not celebrating finishing 3rd.
I have supported Arsenal for 42 years and have had a season ticket for the last 18years.Am i not allowed to voice my opinion. What happened to free speech? Lets have some debate on here and not all follow the party line like sheep

NY, dons last past really wasn’t a hating post not sure why you are losing it and have resorted to the same crap of going to support someone else. you or anyone has no right to tell a supporter to go elsewhere just becasue you disagree with them. most fans agree with all the positions he has stated need improving on.
also not sure why you are saying ade was NEVER meant to be the main striker. clearly at the beginning of the year rvp and ade were (and still are his 1st choice). so what does main mean?

Ade has had a far better season than anyone predicted & his achievement of thirty goals is excellent.
Sure, he still has raw edges to his game but he`s still learning & in 2/3 years will be absolutely awesome.
Also, I don`t think we make anywhere near thances we did at Highbury so that makes his total even better.
Fans will always lay into certain players, it`s certainly not only an Arsenal trait (I know a Man U fan who hates Giggs FFS) but this message board tends to be mostly constructive.
I certainly agree with the comments about last nights game – if you can`t enjoy a 6-2 away win in the Premiership you have a problem.
Most people know the areas we need to strengthen & I believe AW will do the necessary.
I hope a striker is one area because one thing nobody seems to mention about Ade is that he`s played through the season practically injury free.
If we don`t buy a strike & he gets injured next season we`re left with 2 promising (& improving) youngsters & RVP which won`t be strong enough IMO.

For a large chunk of the season we have been missing some extremely key squad members, more so than any of our main title rivals.
We have had Diaby, RVP, Eduardo, Toure, Eboue, Denilson, Djourou, Song, Rosicky and more recently Sagna all missing for more than 4 weeks each.
Now some of those are first teamers and the others are more than useful squad players.
To be only 4 points off of the top spot having had a very unfortunate season with so many injuries proves that our squad isn’t in as bad a shape as some of the doom mungers would have us believe!

donthegooner, so you’ve supported Arsenal for 42 yrs. You’re the guy who said “fuck the wage structure, pay Flamini 70k” — any fan who is so casual about not only the club’s finances but also the effect of such decisions on other players strikes me as someone who’s incredibly thoughtless, unrealistic and irresponsible.
And every Arsenal fan should be concerned about what happened to us this season? gee, really? I honestly didn’t know that. Yeah, I really needed you to tell me that. In your world, there’s only two types of fans: those who see Arsenal’s total demise, falling over a cliff, doom and gloom and those who see everything rosy. There’s no possible type of fan who’s in between.
I guess you see Yogi as in the “everything’s rosy” camp — then why the hell do you participate in this blog? Why do you waste your time reading him? If you want a blog that constantly trashes Wenger and our players, a blog that sees everything in black and white terms, that never has anything positive to say about Arsenal, then go to Le Grove, where insults and laughter at our failures are the order of the day.
If ALL you can take from this season is failure, if that is the ENTIRETY of what you can take from this season, then yes, you’re a gloryhunter, I don’t care how long you’ve supported Arsenal.
You like many others hide behind this bullsh!t whining “oh we’re not allowed to criticize, it’s a fascist mentality around here” whine whine whine. That’s a crutch and I don’t buy it at all.
Every single post of your here is negative, every single one. Your view of Arsenal is totally negative. Your view of Arsenal is of a club that’s been relegated to the 10th division, ffs.
dan, I absolutely stand by my use of the “go support man united” trope against don, I won’t take it back. It’s exactly what he deserves.
There are posters here who talk about our awful defense, how we desperately need a defensive coach, how Wenger screwed up the whole Diarra situation, etc. All of which I agree with. I have no problem with people making these critiques — but if that’s ALL they ever have to say, if that’s ALL they ever see, then they are just as blinkered, just stupid and blind as the mindless “arsene knows” brigade.
My post was in reaction to several posters here coming out with ludicrous whining about yesterday’s game. Some of you apparently believe that just because the rest of us saw some positives from last night’s game that we think everything’s hunky dory.
What infuriates me is this constant comparison with Man United, Chelsea and even Liverpool as superior to us when anyone who’s actually watched those clubs all season long have seen that the gap between us and them is not a very big one. What infuriates me is this refusal to take pride in what we have achieved this season, against all expectations.
What is especially infuriating is this belief that 3 trophyless seasons constitutes some sort of unprecedented, unique, ENORMOUS chasm of failure. Like it’s never ever happened before to any successful club.
If all you can see is gloom, if all you can do is trash the manager and our players, then no, I won’t take you seriously as an Arsenal supporter at all, and never will.

I agree with Frank.
If people cannot just enjoy an end of season 6-2 away win, that could have been 10-4, without having to pick all the bones, then I am sorry for them.
The players obviously wanted to play with a fair amount of abandon, Gallas & Song were knocking it about on the edge of their area.
It was the best way to approach the game in these circumstances, the proof of the pudding being 4 goals added to the GD.
You miserable sods, & you know who you are, have just no love for the actual game of football. It is all about hope, misery, some joy & very occasionally absolute bliss.
If lifting a trophy is all that can give you that joy, then I think you have a pitiful attitude.
We have come mighty close this season with AW going about restructuring the side in the Arsenal way by backing his young players. It has been too much for too many so called Arsenal fans to do the same.

We`ve all got opinions as to how the current side can move forward but sometimes I think people should just stand back & appreciate what we have.

Rather than re-hashing the same old, same old, here’s the stats for the number of Arsenal players in the PFA Team of the Year (according to Wikipedia):
1999: 3 (Anelka, Vieira, Petit)
2000: 1 (Vieira)
2001: 3 (Silvinho, Vieira, Henry)
2002: 3 (Pires, Vieira, Henry)
2003: 5 (Campbell, Cole, Pires, Vieira, Henry)
2004: 6 (Lauren, Campbell, Cole, Pires, Vieira, Henry)
2005: 2 (Cole, Henry)
2006: 1 (Henry)
2007: 0
2008: 4 (Sagna, Clichy, Fabregas, Adebayor)
Seems a pretty fair reflection of our fortunes and the level the team was at over the years.

The Good, The bad, and the Ugly.
No one can disagree that there is always a good side and a bad side to every season. We didn’t win any trophies, but we challenged and we know now what our weaknesses are and we should work on them.
The ugly thing is to keep harping on the bad, without regard whatsoever to the good. What I don’t understand from the doom mongers, the disgruntled, and the never happy people….Do you want us “The La la land people” believe that Arsene Wenger is just happy to go by and win nothing year after year thinking that he is raking up the glory with no trophies?
If this is what you want us to believe, you will not succeed because what you say is not the truth. The obvious truth is that we are developing and in the right direction. If we are going from 4th to 5th to 6th then I will join you…but we are going from 4th, 4th, to 3rd with 4 points behind the eventual winners (4 points is a win & a draw) with a little tiny stupid bit of luck we could be level with the top two. So you will never convince us that Wenger’s head should be rolling down the EPL street, or that we should disband our future heroes.
Don’t waste your time.

While some gooners are trashing our performance last night because of defensive errors and wastefulness, there’s the little matter of our “crap” team having had the best results at Pride Park than the other 3 obviously invincible teams in the top 4. Check out these Derby results:
Derby-Chelsea in November at Pride Park: 0-2
Derby-Chelsea in March at the Bridge: 1-6
Derby-Man United in December at OT: 1-4
Derby-Man United in March at Pride Park: 0-1
Derby-Pool in September at Anfield: 0-6
Derby-Pool in December at Pride Park: 1-2

Yogi you are wrong when you say conceding 2 sloppy goals against a seriously rubbish Derby side does not matter. Seriously they are so bad I would not be surprised if they get relegated from the Championship next season.
But that’s besides the point… once again we saw our Gallas weakness at the back… he gives it the big talk every time, and yet he continues to fail to deliver. Not good enough.
Once again we also saw how shite Bendtner is… his only goal against the worst team in the League was a gifted defensive error… Yet Adebayor comes off the bench, plays 45 minutes and wraps up a hatrick no problems… it’s not rocket science.. Bendtner and Adebayor are classes apart, no contest…Adebayor has now held our forward line together for 2 consecutive seasons, last season with the invisible TH14, and this season with the missing RVP and then the sadly injured Eduardo… Bendtner I’m not even going to waste my breath on, he has to be moved on along with Senderos.
Overall we have had a very good season, I’m not part of the idiot new age supporters that continue to slate us and our fantastic manager on all these johnny come lately blogs, but it would be wrong to not accept that we have serious problems at centre back and up front.
On the flanks yes we are weak but we do have Carlos Vela coming back next season to play on the left, and Theo is now starting to show very promising signs on the right… the future with a few select changes is indeed bright.

Today’s MANU/BARCA game has shown what we lack in the team. Our players lack the spirit to fight and until we find a way of getting that Arsenal spirit back, we will have a long way to go.
Manchester United bought Ferdinand at 30 million and they’ve already repaid by his defensive performances and the trophies they’ve won as a result.
Instead of fixing our defensive drawbacks in January we relied solely on Gallas, Djourou and Senderos and eventually losing our lead in the title chase and the CL quarter finals.
MANU can defend and they did it today. They are on the way to winning the double while we hang around and hope for next year as if MANU, POOL and CHELSEA will just sit down and look at us.
Every year Alex Ferguson studies his team, ascertain the weakness and buy at any cost to fix it. Knowing that if he wins, rewards will come by way of merchandise and prize money.
How about Arsenal? We’ll sit on the problem until it swallows us, lose, lose income and go on to complain about not having money.
The current policy of not bringing a few experienced players and also not buying English because they are so-called ‘unskilled’ and expensive has backfired big time.

Remember, this is Bendtner’s first season with few starts and has scored 8 goals, some very crucial against Pool, Spurs and Villa when our backs were against the wall.
Ade scored only 4 in his first season and 12 in his second season at a time when RvP was out for half of the season but managed to score 13.
This is Ade’s third season so why do you compare the two. Nik hasn’t had the start Ade had even in his first season so what’s the meaning of your dislike for him?

Howard Ferguson didnt strengthen his team with English players, he bought Nani, Anderson, Tevez, as well as Hargreaves but you are right as long as Wengerspin comes out with his banal comments on what a great team spirit etc and doesnt really strenghthen the team we will be an also ram who play entertaining football but with only 25 million available and if he loses Flamini, Hleb, Gilberto and Jens. theres not much he can do despite the boards BS that he has all the money he needs. Especially with the permanently injured RVP and Rosicky in the squad halaf a season max.

what people don’t comment on with the money is that deals are nowadays always done over a few years not paid in one go, therefore $25m now may equate to a total $75 for the next three yearas ie if payments are spread out evenly over the next x amount of years.
if the development money is really coming in a year then the $25m for the “deposit” portion as greater than we think.
do i make sense?

Every good striker in this could score 40 a season.
Santa Cruz playing at Blackburn has already scored 21 premiership. I mean its Blackburn not Arsenal but scoring goals for fun. Santa Cruz with Arsenal could score 40 a season.
He’s a better finisher, scores different types of goals including, headers, tap-ins and shots beyond the 18.
90% of Ade’s goals are tap-ins and his shooting and finishing still needs improvement. His goals are predictable, tap-ins.

Yes he bought Nani but he also bought Hargreaves for 18, Carrick for another 18. They win and he pays off the debt; its as simple as that. If you don’t win you can’t make much money.
We are not winning so our earnings will only come from gate proceeds, which is not eough to move the club higher. Is that what we want to saddle Arsenal with for all seasons. Fear to spend so win nothing.

That’s why we’re failing. We can’t even spend money to fix our defensive problems so that we can maintain our lead to win the title.
Look at the defence. Is Gallas, Senderos, Djourou and Song the type of defensive partnership to win titles?
The only players in the defensive set up who can deliver are Kolo (he will eventually come good), Sagna and Clichy. The rest are nothing to write home about. Just overhyped craps.
We’ve become mediocres, happy and laughing for placing 3rd when we could have easily won the title with proper planning and decision making.

The hatred some people feel for our manager and players makes me wonder if they are really Arsenal supporters or are actually fans of other teams on a wind up.
If you really hate them so much and think they are crap why aren’t you out there supporting the teams that contain all these wonderful players you revere so much. Arsene is not going to buy some over-hyped name for £30m just so you can brag to your mates down the pub, so give it a rest.
And for the people who think Denilson cannot pass the ball, I suggest you rewatch yesterday’s game and stop crying about Flamini. We have other options if he does not want to stay to be part of things at AFC

YW Et Al
We seems to have two extremes here. AW is the best( I have no doubts about that ) we the Arsenal have ever had. But he is not perfect. The other extreme is that AW needs to go for making all those bad decisions in plumbing only for youths and relying on Gallas alone to lead the team and stepping all over Gilberto in the process. Letting Diarra go. Etc. I am some where in between.
Players see these things ie loyalty hence I donot blame players for making most of what they can get while the going is good. Hence Flamster/Hleb is leaving for more monies. So we are not in la la land.
But I would put it to you all that AW is still best suited to lead us forward to see if his grand vision works for another year at least. The fact that we have improved compared to last season and with a little bit of luck we might have won something gives hope. All these is done with very little money spent.
We need still to win things to keep the winners in the squad and to attract other winners/talents to the team and the brand name The Arsenal. Some of us here defend the fact that we are attractive to watch is enough but it is not as we will lose all the players that makes us attractive in the frist place if we do not win things especially with our wage structure. We need to continue in the virtuos cycle started by AW himselg as winning begets fans which begets monies which begets good players and inturn begets winning. IF we need to spend more than we are use to either to keep players and bring in a bigger/better squad to keep winning ,that is what we need to do. Because the vicious cycle of losing at best leads to mediocrity( we who have supported The Arsenal for many years have seen it) and at worse relegation ala Nottingham Forest style.
Despite the above I am still optimistic that AW realised what we are missing this year and he has spent when he needed to Theo/Henry/Reyes to name a few. It may not be the amount some wants but he knows what he needs to do and I urge fans to give him the benefit of doubt until the end of next season at the very least as we would not be at where we are without him. But not winning things is not an option as some of you here would like to believe and Arsene knows that too.

If anyone here says captaincy hasnt added a bit of arrogance to gallas and taken away from him a bit of defensive skills…i beg to differ.
out of the 2 goals conceeded at i think gallas had a role to play.
It isnt long ago that arsene pointed out song is very very good in one v one situations…and yes he is… thats wen all were saying he is just not good to be in the side.
I bet we need a better leader. Gilberto dint added flames to the side but didnt take away much either by creating any fiasco. Right now in our side we dont have a aggressive player let alone a leader. Everyone has a very good head on shoulders which makes each one of them a very good footballer….but we need some one like mad jens… which i dont see anyone to be…except of course mad jens himself.
I say give flamini the incentive to be the captain… hold him….the job will be much much easier ahead for arsene… just let the ethics take a back seat for a moment…for the love of not just arsenal for football.

Next season might be another next season. Singing like Liverpoll now? When we were in a better position to win it after couple of years in the wilderness and we blew it?
The overplayed excuse injuries. Othe clubs suffered from jnjuries as well. Drogba, Terry, Cech, Calvaho, Vidic, Scholes, Nerville, Saha, Silvestre, Lampard, Ballack, Shevchenko (can’t remember all) are all key players who have been out for sometime in their teams.
It was our defence that caused our failure. Arsene needed to fix the defence in January and he did nothing and caused us the title. However, for some fans Arsene is demigod, infallible. He just needed to fix the centre back in January and we could’ve won.
We couldn’t hold on to a lead resulting in losses and draws due to bad centre back defending. Let’s say it as it is and stop blaming injuries which every club had.
Next year? Are you sure we can be that close again next year? Do we still think that MANU, POOL and Chelsea even the Spurs have folded their arms watching us?
Matches we could have easily won if Arsene had fixed the centre back problem in January when Kolo left. Kolo came back knakered as most of us suggested but Arsene left the situation as it was when Kolo left.
EPL
Arsenal/Boro-could have prevented Aliadiere’s goal-3 points
Arsenal/Villa-og avoided-3 points
Chelsea/Arsenal-defended well against Drogba-3 points
MANU/Arsenal-draw, 1 point
10+77=87
We would have 87 points and clearly topping the league and winning.
CL
Arsenal/Liverpool-good defending we score later so a win.
Liverpool/Arsenal-good defending of 1 goal so a win
Assuming we bought an experience defender for 15. CL semi-finals qualification is 15 million so we get the funds to pay.
Winning the league also bring in a prize of about 50. CL finals brings additional 60.
We’ll pay several times over the CB player brought in.
Having faith in players and thus not bringing in anyone to be ahead of them? Why should we care, we should be more concerned about Arsenal’s future than giving more chances to players who’re not repaying their wages.
I hope the jubilating 3rd position fans will see through my arguement.

Let’s buy Gareth Barry because Flamini has already ‘left’ and handover the captaincy to him.
Rvp may not sustain a long campaign, so let’s get another striker as we’re also not sure Ade will be injury free next season. We might get back Eduardo only around December.
LW.Buy Dimitrov of Bulgaria who came for trials and Arsene praised him. He’ll share position with Vela and Rosicky on the left, because Rosicky’s problem might not see the light of the day as is the norm with him.
Let’s work hard and keep Hleb.
CB. Buy either Zapata, Abiol or Richards.
We just need to inject 3 new players and we’ll be set.
Centre back is so important. In fact, it is the number 1 problem to fix.

We lack ambition and staying pwer? may be. Check the grit, hardwork and defending mentality of MANU yesterday. MANU may be running away with another double, that’s what good judgement gives you.
With need defenders with the spirit of Adams, Keown, Bould, Dixon etc not defenders who lose the plot and cry.

I kinda agree with Howard. Yes, in many ways, it is a s simple as that. We always think that we must score one more than the opposition. That’s a fine concept, especially when we have many technically gifted players. Would be perfect if we can score in the last minute and the opponents have no time to counter. For the last few seasons, we are unable to hold onto what we have. We cannot defend for long because our technically gifted players’ mindset is to attack. The concept of what we have we hold does not sit well in their heads. Hence we lost many points due to draws because of loss of concentration in defending and the inability to accept the idea that kicking the ball into row Z is part of football. When we are defending a lead, we continue to waltz around when we win the ball, and many times we quickly lose possession again. When that happens, half our team are already up the pitch trying to attack, leaving us exposed.
Remember 2003 after we lost the title, only then we started to play possession football in the FA Cup Final against Southampton. Sure we won the Cup, but it was too late for the title.
We never do learn, and with the same bunch of technically gifted players, we will repeat the same mistakes next season.
It is a joy to watch when we are attacking at speed, but it is a nightmare when we are defending. We need more grit in defending, we don’t need technically gifted defenders. A new CB in the mould of Tony Adams or Martin Keown is needed. Otherwise, it will be another disappointing season for me, and come next April, some so-called fans would be delighted with finishing 2nd!

we have plenty of cover at CB but Wenger will need to make a decision…. we have Toure, Gallas, Senderos, Djourou, Song who all can play there, but if Song is seen as a defensive midfielder rather than a CB then i think we need to buy an experienced CB. Toure and Gallas have looked really dodgy in a number of games, senderos plays well alongside Toure or Gallas but he hasnt done enough to be considered in our 1st 11.
Point being wenger needs to make a few decisions in that area, or he can allow the Toure Gallas partnership to continue, but we all know we need a bigger and stronger CB to partner 1 of them and that there is the problem, who would you drop, your captain or Mr consistent..?? Very hard decision which i think wenger doesnt want to make.
Midfield… i think we have many options in the middle with… Fab, Denilson, Diaby, Song, possibly Gilberto for another year but im scepticle. Diaby should be playing more central next season with Vela coming in and we definately must must MUST MUST buy another winger. On the right of midfield we are very ineffective at times, Walcott does well, Eboue is just the makeshift player so who will be our 1st choice RM… Van Persie looks gd in a 4-3-3 up front patrolling the right wing comin in on his left foot – that is where he scored the majority of his goals.. so that is an option.. but we need someone else to come in.
Upfront we have more than enough… i am very pleased with our strike force, any1 who is brought in will just make it a little too much of competition and force someone like Walcott or Bendtner to consider their future which we all dont want to happen. Bendtner has a very gd return for a sub, walcott is comin along nicely and looks sensational at times.. hes goin to be a very BIG player for us.
so 2 players is all we need i reckon – a winger and a defender… plus to hold onto Hleb & every1 else…
oh yeah.. isnt it Flamini’s last day …????
