Captain Not-So-Fantastic and Another Off?

It seems that the order of the day is to create speculation with the good players in the squad being reported targets for all of the supposedly bigger clubs in Europe/ We have had weeks of such stories and now even Philippe Senderos is the subject of one. Except that the whole point of the piece is to create more uncertainty and give the impression of a club in turmoil. Still, it must be nice for the lad, boosting his confidence knowing that somebody is thinking of him, even if it is in a negative way.

The one thing about the speculation that the club always used to be firm about is they never responded. Well, it was until the Reyes fiasco a couple of years back since when someone from within the stadium walls has commented. Arsene has told everyone that Internazionale have not contacted him about the player. Presumably this is in much the same way that Juventus have not contacted him about Mathieu Flamini. Of course, Arsene is trying to quell the speculation (or maybe even flush it out) but the one certainty is that whatever his motivation is, the story will remain on the back pages instead of being allowed to fade away.

He went onto threaten to report the Italians to the relevant authorities,

I find all the talk about the players completely disrespectful. When it comes directly from the club, enough is enough, we shall report them directly to FIFA from now on

I vaguely (well, no, definitely) remember him saying the same about Real over Vieira and Reyes which suggests this might be him letting off steam. He is right; it is disrespectful but unless the club are genuinely prepared to report Inter then to be honest, he should not even mention it because it does make him look rather foolish to make empty threats. Arsene was a tad disingenuous when comparing his M.O. to that of Inter for in denying talking about players, he has spoken in the recent past about David Villa and Micah Richards (Babel last summer as well). Whilst it is less direct and more a general admiration, the responses have been to questions about transfer speculation.

William Gallas has responded to the criticism of his captaincy,

They can say whatever they want. They won’t kill me, I am stronger than this

Which ought to make yesterday’s training session interesting as Kolo Toure openly criticising his captain,

Gallas was really good for us at the start of the season but then after this Birmingham game he made a mistake, he knows that and we all tried to bring him back to the team and he came back well. When you make a mistake it is difficult after that, it was a really important part of our season

The comments are unusual for Toure in that I do not recall reading any comments attributed to him that were publicly critical of a colleague before. Still, politics is politics whatever the work environment and Kolo did not miss a beat when he said,

I would be really, really proud to be captain. I am now one of the oldest players in the squad so naturally I feel like a captain and it doesn’t matter if I have the armband or not. It is a decision for the manager and he is the only one who can make it

Life would be dull if everyone got along all of the time but it is indicative of the problem that Arsene faces with Gallas; the team needed a leader and did not necessarily get one during its rough spell. That is not to say that Gallas is solely responsible for the slump but his inability to raise the spirits was reminiscent of Henry’s captaincy. It seems to me that if one has not taken place already, the squad need to have a clear the air where they tell him what is expected and he does likewise to them otherwise it is hard to see him continuing in the role.

’til Tomorrow.

U know you cannot blame Gallas for everything but he never takes responsibilty when he messes up. Instead of defending himself why cant he admit that he was wrong and even admit that his behaviour could have even remotely affected the morale of the team. I for one defended him with the Birmingham situation but one thing that i failed to realize was that the yougnsters were more composed than him (THE CAPITAN) while facing the same adversity! I just dont think he is the right man for the captaincy anymore!

Gallas is on a learning curve too. He’s got one year under his belt and will only get better. He deserves a second chance, and a bit of talking-to would be enough to improve him.

On a related note, THE captain Tony Adams gave an interview to Setanta where he said he wanted to install a “over our dead bodies” attitude when he captained the side. And that he’d be happy to help the club if they offered him a job this year. Please Arsene get him as a defensive coach or something! Not sure if he’d be interested in that as he’s the No.2 at Pompey already, but in whatever capacity, please just get the guy and his steel would infect the team!

Modric to join spuds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.gunnerblog.com/

Arsene plzzzz sign villa just for the sake of it.

its a f.u.c.k.i.n whip.

top 4 tottenham here they come

its a defence they need

gunner4life

It is also on their official site now,

It seems strange to me where the Spuds actually get there money. But again like Bent I think they may have made a mistake here. Not in Modric’s quality, there is no doubting that, but they have spent over 20m on him and maybe they should have looked for 3-4 good players in all areas for a combined 20m rather than blow it all on one. I am pleased we did not sign him though, he is another Rosicky/Hleb in that he is primarily a attacking midfielder that sits behind the striker and I still think we need width.

But anyway this is an Arsenal Blog. I think we should definately be looking at Adams, it seems to make complete sense to get someone in that is Arsenal through and through and a great defender. Not sure if he should come in as No 2, as that may be a bit harsh on Pat Rice but definately on the coaching staff with a view to being number 2/1 in the future.

As for Henry, I would not be surprised at all to see him coming back in the summer but only for Season or two before he jets to MLS. I would like to see it two, if you could combine Adams and Henry coming back to the club it would give the club and fans a major lift. I Think we could get Henry for around 8-10m too whereas Villa is going to cost a fortune and like the Spuds I think we would be better off spreading the cash on a few players.

On Cash, obviously we have Usmanov as our biggest share holder now, does he not have any right to invest further money into the transfer market. It seems a little strange to me that we have a multi-billionaire sitting at the club and we cant tap into his money. I am no money man so please dont insult me for this, I just dont understand the logic

As usual, the Spuds have over-payed for a player they don’t really need. However, I don’t believe we were ever really interested in Modric, certainly not at that price.

Patthegooner, I don’t think Usmanov is here to invest, he’s more interested in dividends so that he can make money on his shares. If the Board were to take anything from him, it might come at a cost we are not prepared to pay.

Yogi, I don’t think I see the Kolo interview in quite the same light you do. Everyone knows that the fall-out from the Birmingham game was difficult. It was actually Wenger who started all this speculation about Gallas’ future as captain. Kolo is not saying anything new, he is acknowledging what we all know that Gallas made a mistake in his first year as a captain either he’ll learn from it or he’s not the right personality for the role and Wenger will choose another captain. As for Kolo wanting to be captain he was responding to a direct question. We all know he would love to be captain that is not new. I’ve also seen Cesc responding to the same question in the affirmative. They are hardly going to say no.

Good morning everyone.

Gallas should remain as Captain. He may have made some mistakes in his first year of doing the job, but that’s to be expected.

After all, who doesn’t make mistakes at some point when carrying out a new role?

Do people really think that when Frank McClintock and Tony Adams were made Arsenal Captains that they never made any mistakes?

With time to reflect on his performance in the role, and some quiet words in his ear from Arsene, Gallas will learn from his mistakes and not repeat them.

I believe he’ll increasingly develop and grow into the role, and will carry it out based on who he is as a person, not based on who other people might like him to be.

It is now becoming increasingly clear - to me at least - that Arsenal players are too naive, too honest, and too nice when dealing with sections of the media.

Toure’s latest interview concerning Gallas, the Captaincy and his own aspirations for that role reflect this.

Toure simply doesn’t need to answer in a straight forward way every question put to him…which could be said of other Arsenal players this season too.

Arsenal players, in my view, need to know: when and when not to make themselves available for interviews; when to keep their mouths shut or to say no comment; and how to reject the premises of many of the questions that they’re asked.

Whatever media training they’re getting at present isn’t good enough.

The players need to sit down with a world weary, cynical, savvy media operator like Aliastair Campbell - or his sporting equivalent - and learn how to get their messages out whilst at the same time putting the media firmly in it’s place.

I’d much prefer spin from players than the naive ammunition that’s hand on a plate to enable sections of the media to beat the club with time and time again.

I agree with you there Passenal

I dont think we were interested in him either, nor do I think Chelsea were either. Although the player said that we tried to buy him at the same time as Eduardo but he decided to wait.

I reckon it was a lot of Agent talk trying to engineer a move to the Premiership. The BBC put it down as 15.8 Million

The player himself stated his desire to play for Chelsea back in November and then I found this quote

“My goal is to move to bigger club during the summer and into one of the world’s best leagues” and went on saying: “I am ready to play in any of the five best leagues, but I am most attracted to Spain, especially Barcelona. I am honored that they are interested in me.”

Ha Ha, I guess they were not interested either. I wonder why he did not wait until after the Euro’s, he could have put on a master display and engineered a move to a TOP club.

Also I get the dividend bit, but what about speculate to accumalate, if he pumped in some money that could lead to trophies, surely his dividend would be returned, if anything at the moment would the share price not be going in the other direction.

What do you want out of the game today guys (CSKA v Manure). Part of my mad it aint over till its over heart prays for a draw and both clubs to lose their remaining games, and us to win all three and claim the title, but the head say Man Ure to win to give us a shot at a deserved 2nd.

Once again I am confused, did we are are we still having a terrible season?? We need to do this that buy this bring this person in otherwise we are doomed. “buy villa please” for crying out loud what terrible results have we had. Lost two games did not make the finals and now condemned to misery for next season. I would hate to have some of these supporters in a real war. Talk about defeatist. I’ve stopped writing because this site is full of doom sayers. Get real its a game of football and we have bloody great this season. It must be my age what a lot of rubbish is talked on this blog.

Gallas should not remain as captain, for the following reasons.

1. As captain he should be good enough to play in every game.
2. We cannot win the league with our two center half barely 6 feet tall. That has been a major problem in our defence. Personally it will always be toss up between (Gallas, Kolo and Song) as the ball playing defenders.
3. We need an out and out defender that attacks balls in the air. Personally Senderos and Djourou are good enough playing along side one of the three aforementioned. I know a lot will disagree, but I will argue that Gallas’ arrival has stunted the development of Djourou and Senderos. And also bringing a decline in King Kolo’s performances.

In summary, let Gallas fight Kolo and Song for one defensive position. Let Djourou, Senderos (or a new Defender) fight for the other.

I see one of Kolo and Gallas getting the Gilberto treatment next season.

We have had a great season old timer but we also threw away the Premiership in a pretty lame manner.

I would not say thay everyone is defeatist but I would say that a lot are very dissapointed with what has happened and a lot were probably right in saying our squad strength is not where it should be.

So yeah we had a great season and way above my expectations but it could have been a whole lot better.

Dont stop posting though as it the likes of yourself that keep this great site going and help to keep it sane.

OT your absolutely correct, hearing some of you guys anyone would think we were on the verge of relegation and that Spurs because they have apparently signed a useful player are going to overhaul us.
We have had a great season considering nobody gave us a cat in hell’s chance of being in the top four.
The future is very bright even if we do lose the odd player which i am not going to believe until they do leave such is the dross of media speculation.
Make no mistake Arsene has his eyes on a few players, and they will arrive and make us even stronger.
Please can we have some positive input for a change and stop all this negativity which is bringing this blog down and is not worthy of Yogi’s well thought, well written, well blanced views.

Old Timer

Its the nature of the internet unfortunately. Far too many people sit staring at news feeds on their computer screens all day long and allow them selves to get influenced by that which they read.

Arsenal get linked, however fictitiously, with a player - they let their imaginations run away - look at the Henry discussion above! Then when it doesn’t happen they get all angry and depressed, about something that was always imaginary!

A few members of the press write negative articles about the press, all the news feeds pick up on it and all of a sudden in peoples minds we are in crisis.

The same with anything positive, the 70million ‘warchest’ for example. It never existed, I got tired of trying to explain to people why yet people still let their Football Manager/PES minds run wild and get all disappointed when it turns out not to be true…strangely a certain poster who proclaims himself to be the ‘chief financial officer’ of a company failed to pick up on this screamingly obvious piece of financial data.

And theres another thing - the internet allows people to spout their opinions and make up qualifications to support them which some people take seriously, forward on and all of a sudden you have another load of nonsense rumour doing the rounds as truth. Lock at that South American guy that blogger managed to spoof the papers with last summer

Its all nonsense, the only information anyone should ever bother looking at is that displayed on the Arsenal.com page - nowhere else.

Especially not Myles “I had a lower rib removed” Palmer.

There are plenty of non-negative posters, just like yourself - my hard and fast rule is scroll past anyone who deliberately abbreviates, uses an exclamation mark after each sentence or can’t spell (beyond reasonable typos) and you’ll avoid 99% of the rubbish negative nonsense and keep your heart rate down!

Don’t leave Old Timer, there are some doomers on here, but compared to other blogs it’s really nothing. I often feel like you, but I refuse to let them win. I want any casual reader (even the players might visit some of these sites) to see that not everyone lacks faith in the team and that some of us can take a more balanced view of things.

This season we have been badly affected by injuries, suspensions and the ANC as we lost some key players at key points in the season. That is why Arsene was not able to rest some players at times when they needed it. As a result we just ran out of steam at the business end of the season, which was compounded by some key decisions in crucial games not going our way.

Why slam the players or the manager for this combination of events? I’m a realist and I know that you cannot control, or plan for every eventuality. Things happen in life for a reason and you learn from your mistakes. This team was good enough to keep us top of the league for most of the season, so how have they suddenly become crap? Despite losing RVP and TR7 for the bulk of the season, we still kept up our challenge and it was only the loss of Eduardo on top of that which was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Despite all the supposed ’strength in depth’ of our rivals, they would also suffer if they lost 3 key players like that.

As for the defence, Kolo and Gallas worked fine and were building a good partnership until the disruption of the ANC, after which Kolo’s injury and being pushed out onto the right has affected his form. That doesn’t make him a bad defender.

Magneto, you make a good point about the players talking to the media. Maybe they take their lead from Arsene, whom I also feel is too honest and open at times. All the media then do is use his words and twist them into a stick to batter him with. It’s a difficult position because if he refused to speak to them, they would probably just use that against him too!

Have you ever woken at four in the morning feeling that something nasty has happened? Well, last night it happened to me. I switched on the radio and heard Spurs had signed Modric.

OK, I agree, Wenger can’t have wanted him. We have been looking at him apparantly, as have Barca and many others. We must have told him we weren’t interested: that’s why he’s gone to Spurs, as the next best thing, to be near Eduardo; otherwise with his talent he’d surely have held out for somewhere better.

Because he is a talent by all accounts. He can play left, right and in the middle. After Cesc, he’s thought to be the best young playmaker around. I don’t get it. If we’re buying just one quality player, as Wenger maintains, surely a backup for Cesc and a winger is the priority? Modric is both. And at 15 million - the price I heard on the radio - Spurs have got him quite cheap.

Cesc can’t play every game for the third season running. What happens if he gets a bad injury and is missing for months? The only reason has played so much is that without him we are half the team. I can’t believe Merida is ready to take over in, say, a crunch game at Old Trafford, let alone Wilshere. As for Denilson, his passing is awful and anyway he’s really a defensive midfielder. Add to that, the likelihood that Hleb will go and that Rosicky will break both legs in the Euros. That’s another thing that’s infuriating me: Rosicky thinks he’ll be OK to play for the Czech Republic…

I hope Wenger has turned down Modric because he has someone better in mind. I hope it isn’t because any player who costs more than a penny is ruled out on principle. If it’s the second, it looks like we’re in for yet another season of jam tomorrow but never, alas, jam today.

I’m sure Senderos wants to go. He’s a sensible lad and a decent, if slow, centre half. Staying here, where he’s becoming the new Cygan in the minds of some of the fans, wouldn’t be good for his confidence or his development. We should get decent money for him, though - and for Bendtner and for Eboue maybe…. So who are we planning to spend it on if we’ve turned Modric down?

Spelling, Josef K? You mean if someone can’t be bothered to make themselves understood, their thoughts aren’t likely to be worth reading anyway? Cd be your rite about th@.

I personally dont mind complete doom mongerers. the great thing about a blog is that you will get people from all backgrounds, from all ages and from all levels of positivity about their club. Its all about freedom of speech and opinions.

That is what I like about them. Sure you look at some posts and think ‘what on earth are they talking about’, and some are as depressing as a Smiths Album, but it is good banter and it is good to hear peoples opinions on all things Arsenal. And in someways it also acts as a debate, and I can admit that sometimes peoples posts on here have opened my mind a bit and changed my opinion on things and have improved my positivity on the bright future ahead.

For me as long as it does not lower into personal insults I really dont mind.

If anything today I personally think the posts on Henry and Adams are positive. Sure the likelyhood is that neither will happen, but if we are not talking about that then we are talking about the yearly use of the press to unsettle our players with the current Hleb and Flamini stories and they are definately negative thinking.

Just have one thought about what just happened over at Stamford Bridge. I wonder if we’ll see headlines about either Chelski or Manure being in crisis after:

Slur Alex’s mental behaviour on the touchline (if Wenger is Basil Fawlty, then Fergie is Father Jack on speed)

Ballack and Drogba squaring up to each other and Drogba mouthing off at Steve Clarke

Rio totally losing it and trying to fight the whole Chelsea team.

I doubt it, I guess they were just reacting to the pressure of a big game.

Passenal, I agree you can’t plan for everything, certainly not what happened to Eduardo. A couple of years ago we lost both Cashley and Clichy for most of the reason: to have had three top-quality left backs would have been taking insurance too far.

But that said, van P and Rosicky’s injuries were fairly predictable (to judge from their injury-proneness in previous seasons); and we were in fact very lucky that Clichy, Cesc, Hleb and Flam survived unscathed, given the way we’ve overplayed them.

Going into next season, I would worry if we didn’t have some quality backup for Cesc and Clichy in particular (Toure, I’d guess, will be backup for Sagna, assuming we buy a good central defender). On the wings we’ll have young, pacy, but still untried players such as Traore, Vela, Gibbs and probably Gouffran. That’s OK, but only so long as we have a backup central attacking midfielder of Cesc and Hleb’s quality - i.e. someone proven who can cut through defences. Such a player isn’t easy to find and doesn’t come cheap, which is why I’m still a bit regretful we didn’t buy the talented Modric, seeing as he can also play on the wing.

In short, if we don’t buy the equivalent of Modric, a quality central defender, some cover for Clichy and possibly a striker, we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves if, come next February, when the league and the Champions League really hot up, we’re down to the bare exhausted bones once again, and we chuck all our good work away.

I’m not demanding that we spend money we’ve not got. Wenger does brilliantly with the kids, and if that’s all we can afford, so be it. But I would argue that we shouldn’t take risks if we can afford not to. Every round of the Champions League brings in the price of a player, so leaving the squad wafer-thin, as we did this year, could be a false economy. If Liverpool win, Torres will almost have paid for himself; if ManU lose to Barca - no Vidic, no Rooney, it’s now not impossible; they could even throw away the title, having had to rest players against Chelsea… They have a huge squad compared to us, but I bet they’re now wishing they’d covered their backs even more.

i didnt really meant tht its imperative we sign villa coz spurs signed modric….just y the hell he signed on at spurs baffles me…wen he knew we were interested in him before.

anyways… we have to sign someone pretty soon as yogi says before the euros dont we… may not be villa…may b some unknown french.

As far as signings, i believe Arsene will assess the team and by the players needed. All this speculation will do ur head in and honeslty he never buys who u think he should. Who saw Eduardo on the radar. Arsene will get it right!

As far as Gallas, its not about him making mistakes really but his attitude and the fact that if he wants to be captain he must take some sort of responsibilty for the callapse, mind u it has been on the defensive end that we have faltered of late, what position does he play in again? He made two very crucial mistakes from what i remember, never owned up! that my biggets problem.

We say he should be given a chance but i remember everyone saying that henry should not be captain last year. we ven wanted Wenger to take away the captaincy mid season. I repeat, do the younger players trust him now? all the positive comments by us will not bring that back!

God Bless!

I saw Eduardo coming - well, sort of! I watched him play brilliantly in the two Champions League qualifiers and vaguely wondered if Wenger would be considering him. He kept a watchful eye Rosicky after he’d scored against us in Europe so I thought it possible he’d do the same thing again. I’m not claiming any great insight - I was sure we’d go for Modric, alas! - but Wenger’s signings do often follow a pattern. There are couple of young, mobile French defensive midfielders he’s apparantly looking at now, presumably as potential replacements for Flam. Just wish there was an attacking midfielder in the Cesc mould I thought he might be considering. Flam, I think, is relatively easy to replace - he’s not exceptionally skilled, just very embattled and energetic - but Cesc and Hleb, on the skills front, are almost one-offs.

Passenal

Thank you & a few others for the little bits of sense on the comments, these last few days.

I fully agree with OT & Veteran that YW’s excellent writing deserves more than the complete & utter ‘over the top’ nonsense that has become so prevalent (although as yet not today),in these columns & others.

Sometimes one does gets sucked in to disbute some of this rubbish & bile, but it has now got through to me that it is just better to ignore it.

I suppose it will depend on the mood of the day.

Mia, I think you answered your own question in your last paragraph. Man U supposedly have a much bigger squad than us, but no Ronaldo, losing Vidic and Rooney and you start to see the cracks appearing.

Also, apart from Chelsea no team has two players of equal quality in every position. They either have an older player on the way down or a young up and coming talent. A player of the same quality as Cesc would expect to play every week not sit on the bench, so I don’t think what you suggest is realistic.

Big Al - I’ll eat my hat if they do! The hypocricy of the media here knows no bounds!

top 4 tottenham here they come

its a defence they need

http://www.datenplatz.de

If you can’t be bothered about making yourself understood, why are you writing? To piss us off?

If you don’t make the effort to write something people would understand, why do you think I should waste my time reading it?

Passenal, yeah manu are cracking a little bit at the end, but the difference is they had problems with the deepest squad in the leauge at the end of the season, not back in feb against the likes of Middlesboro and Bham.
Seems to me that thier depth kept them ticking till the end where they are still in pole position to win the leauge and be in the CL final.

Wenger has many strengths but I think his one weakness is a certain arrogance when it comes to squad depth. He just will not be dictated to by anyone about who he should buy etc. Thats all fair enough and he built a brilliant team that plays the best football we fans our lucky to see ( supporting Chelsea must suck), however I have to agree with Mia, one or two choice signings and wed still be up there.

As for the Cesc rotation issue yeah thats a hard one, hes too young to bench and no experienced pro on the way down would want to sign on just to rotate with him, Gilberto would be ideal but hes a different kind of playa.

Anyway its sat night for all you people over the pond. I hope you are reading this on Sunday morning. Cheers!

1. I agree with OT that many blogs and newspaper columns alike are going over the talk about the need for Arsenal to change. We were really close this year and had bad luck with officials on top of that. But, I don’t think asking ‘what could make the difference’ is the same as saying ‘it is all wrong.’

2. As for Adams and Henry, get them both! We definitely need a top defensive coach and their seems a fair bit of consensus that he is that. As for Henry, chemistry could be an issue, but dropping into DB10’s old spot as a playmaking striker would suit him really well. His body is wearing down, but he would be immense to have around in important matches.

3. When we discuss players, don’t we have a highly-rated backup for Cesc named Denilson? Yes he had an off year, but that can be part of learning. I am surprised he has been forgotten so quickly.

Mia:
Denilson is good enough cover. Shame he got injured at the time he was needed most.

It looks like the stupid red-nosed idiot is going to bottle it and lose the title…Although I hate both Man Ure and Chelski, I still would prefer it to go to the Mancs not the scum money bags.
==

The Spuds just proved yet again they’re good for nothing. I was counting on them to relegate stupid Bolton. I guess you can’t depend on the Spuds for anything.
==

We are also forgetting that Song wasn’t really a defensive midfielder or even a CB, Arsene plays him in these roles, but he can be also a creative midfielder as he played for Cameroon against Egypt in ACN group stage.

Flint McCullough, Veteran and others: I’m interested in your view that the site deserves better-quality comments.

Better quality in what way? What particularly would you like less of? Josef K complains about unreadable spelling, exclamation marks, and so on - I agree, I can’t read anything that’s in illiterate u r shite type of text-speak. But in terms of the content what would you ban if you could? Ignorance?Negativity? Bile?

Trouble is, it’s all highly subjective. One person’s doom-mongering is another person’s informed and thoughtful criticism. Do you think there is a way the site could be policed, perhaps by people being collectively voted off - three strikes and you’re out unless someone sticks up for you, sort of thing?

I’m not complaining that you’re complaining. Quite the opposite: I’m genuinely interested, because I agree it would be terrific if there were a site that was different from the rest - more knowledgeable, more thoughtful, more literate, more junk-free and bile-free. I used to imagine that like would attract like, i.e. similiar tastes would gather together and the others would leave, but what seems to happen in practice is that the sites become much of a muchness, each with perhaps half a dozen good fairly regular contributors who are unfortunately swamped by the Wenger-must-spend, Spurz-r-shit kind of thing. Oddly, arsenalamerica is the most junk-free, and they spell better too, plus it has two or three people who are well worth reading, but it’s .. well, a bit American for my taste. Do you have any practical ideas for making the site more to your taste?

Seattle

I am a sad old sod, who is waiting to see todays’ games on BBC’s wonderfully well balanced MOTD program.

The thing that gets me is the assumption that “the everything would have been better if we had bought players in January” is a proven point.

The players we may have bought could have been a disaster, like the Colombian guy that upset the balance at Newcastle, when they were running away with the PL only to bugger up a double digit points lead.

First of all you have to establish the need to buy. Eduardo was taken out in February with RVP expected back soon. Rosicky & Djourou were not expected to be long term injuries. A new CB would be hard, but not maybe not impossible, to incorporate in the side.

The problem & the blessing is that we do, as AW says, have some some young players, who should become very very big. For me players like Theo, Bentner, Djourou, Song & Denilson clearly fall into that category. To put someone of lesser ability, for just a possible rather than certain, short term gain, ahead of them does not make sense to me.

I have said before that we have the strongest, in depth squad, I have ever seen at the club. Our biggest problem has been keeping them fit, specially 2 of our true world class players, ie RVP & Rosicky. Players like that do not grow on trees.

As it is this team went astray because of maybe a lack of maturity as a consequence of the events at Birmingham. Perhaps we were not quite ready but my guess is that, if you forget about silverware, this season will be 1 of the top 5 ever league performances by any Arsenal side.

That is why I am right behind AW & cannot tolerate the garbage (I am not including you Seatle) written by the media & so many glory hunting twats who seem to follow Arsenal these days.

Let them take the days of Hornsby & Hawley, when you could have a justifiable whinge & moan but at least you could also see the funny side.

you say spurs need a defence but so do we! our issue for many years has been a leaky defence. since TA retired, we have always had a culture of, we will try and outscore you. that means we need to be aiming to score 2 or 3 goals in every game. as we know, that is simply not realistic. there are so many games where scoring goals is difficult for one reason or another. you might grab one goal and in those situations you have to be comfortable defending the lead. Arseanl are far from that. in the past that did not matter so much because we were often to dominant going forward but these days I really feel we need to tighten up at the back. I think Gallas has to go. he is a very good defender but I think Toure needs a new Campbell next to him. a big defender with experience and power. that to me is a key move for wenger this summer and if it does not arrive I seriously will not be expecting any trophies next season.

also, I dont have an issue with our current first 11 (as long as Eboue is not in it!), but I do not consider our next 11 to be of sufficient quality or experience. we only need 1 or 2 improvements in that area and I will be happy.

I haven’t forgotten Denilson, but as I said above, his passing is still far too wayward for him to be adequate cover for Cesc or Hleb. Anyway, I think he’s a defensive midfielder by preference, not a playmaker. He may of course improve but that will take time, and in a couple of years Merida or Wilshere could be ready in any case. It’s now that I’m concerned about, especially if we lose Hleb.

Gazzap, are you drunk? You don’t just want Gallas relieved of the captaincy, you want him to leave? Blimey. Why?

Gazzap,

Although I agree with you about the feeling that the defence was more dependable in the Adam’s period, the facts will show that on only 2 or seasons did Tony’s teams actually let in less goals than this season.

I also concur that we do need a BIG strong TALL CB to be in the attacker of the ball, with Kolo in support. That would probably mean letting Gallas go but if it is Kolo or him, so be it. That would leave the Swiss boys & Song as backup. I also see Song as a big player for us next season hopefully in tandem with Flamini & Cesc.

For all his antics I still think it would be a mistake to ditch Eboue.

Mia,
I don’t think you can really have any censorship apart from someone, who is just inundating the blog non stop, like someone most of us will recognise.

In the early days of this blog I would read it but no one was commenting. The writing was so good that I thought YW should have some response. That got me into blogging. A few others, like Frank, joined in. In the main we were like-minded but could still differ in opinion. We went off on tangents but the debate was intelligent & rewarding.

More people got involved, which is good, but gradually, in my opinion a number of people with nothing really sensible to say latched on, so we now have what you have today.

Debate is good. It is fair to say that people like Gazzap & I have our differences but we have a good discussion about our differences.

With others there is a point where there is no point because you feel their argument is so far from being intelligent or realistic.

Unfortunately that is becoming more & more the norm.

We have no good experiences nor leadership on the field. Watching MANU and Chelsea today I could see leadership all over the place.

We don’t have that and its proving difficult for us to win any trophy. Its been so for the past 3 years and over.

How come Spurs is bringing in so many players and we can’t?

Our earnings are far higher than Spurs but they’ve spent a fortune albeit on mediocres; all the same they’ve managed to get money to spend. Name them;

1. Bent 16
2. Bale 10
3. Ricardo 4
4. Yunis Karbule 8
5. Gilberto 3
6. Woodgate 7
7. Hutton 7

Today it was reported that Modric has moved there for 15.

So why can’t we bring at least three good experience players for CB, wing and striker?

If Spurs can waste money on average players why can’t we spend the same money on quality players ?

Howard, for years spuds have spent loads on players and are still shite. Our manager has a different approach (enforced on him maybe) and picks up some real quality players at sensible cost to the club.

At the beginning of the season the spuds spent more millions to take our 4th spot, they failed. Some things never change.

You should click on my name and read about some of our good young players coming through. It might help you.

Mr Pathegooner

anyone who talks so much about another clubs recent signing leads me to believe he’s a bit jealous. You might not agree of course but you certainly do talk about modric alot mate.
I am a Croat and supporter of Eds but you’re kidding yourself if you think the spuds have wasted money. They have bought an absolute champion player who was easily the best player at Dinamo, ahead of eduardo who I love.
He will be a huge hit I’m sorry to say. He’s made for the premiership.
Arsene DID want him and has stated so in the past.Barcelona journalists turned up in Zagreb with a #14 shirt and presented it to him.Just because you don’t know the facts don’t pretend you do champ. He is the equal of fab4, and then some.Don’t be upset because you don’t want to pay top dollar for guys and keep missing out on ready made players.

You have to pay for serious talent, and that’s what he is.Guess you don’t follow England and see him run rings around your best players though do you patheticgooner

Deal with it, the spuds got a real talent.End of.

Richard, fair enough to Modric he may be a good player but I think reality says:

1- Arsenal football club will not be able to buy all players available and freeze them in a huge freezer or something.

2- Arsenal bought Eduardo because he was the player we needed at the price we wanted, not a prices forced upon us.

3- Modric may be a talent, but don’t try to beat the clock. Time will tell if he can make something out of the Spuds, they are hopeless case….did you watch their recent game?

4- To be honest, and that may hurt your feelings (sorry) there are a few players around of Modric quality….but there aren’t many Fabregas around for a mere 15 million.

The question is.

How come Spurs have a lower inflows but for years have spent huge on players but we can’t?

Can somebody help me with this? I mean we can’t raise the money but Spurs are able to raise any money they want?

I’m told we get less than 6 from Emirates on the shirt while Spurs get 8 from Mansion.

Its Edelman doing a good job?

How come Chelsea came on recently and is doing better on the merchandise side than us? Its the stupid trophies and we’re not working hard to bring in trophies now.

We’re always afraid to spend but good players bring trophies and trophies increase earnings.

United may be in debt but as far as they’re winning titles they will earn more to pay their debts.

This is simple business formula Edelman and co. are not working hard to implement.

We bring in foreign players, develop them and in the end they move on to their countries or play for their childhood teams. So why do we continue to bring in young foreign players if every season we will be confronted with transfer speculations.

The policy should be this.

1. Develop young English players.
2. Buy only matured experienced players from abroad.

According to sky..spurs have almost announced that berba is available… i guess he will be sold no doubt and that will cover all of watever is spent on modric…. I wud say its a gud move….berba was looking more and more disinterested…and keane and bent are doing well….anyways….

I was pissed off when i saw the news….
If we were interested in him….and were not willing to pay 15million…i think we r a bit too “respectful” abt the transfers and wages.

I really hope someone like sagna is their in the manager’s mind for CB and winger.

I have no hope for Rosicky coming back…. but RVP I hope will play a part..and I am sure he was rushed after Dudu’s injury and he looked determined….Rosicky frustratingly dint even sound frustrated at his own injury…”I will have to be paitent” he said..wat crap!!

Agree with you Mia, its a miracle someone like cesc, flamini, clichy and sagna have played most of the season free of injuries…..You cannot count on these players doing it for another season….Even if one of them gets an injury before a stretch of important matches….it will affect the results….as we saw wen sagna was injured for the last part of chelsea game….it was suddenly chaos.

As the squad size gets bigger at other clubs…they get to play fresher players for a longer time….and you can work on “quality” and “fair play” however you like….in the end you have to match them for freshness of the players on the picth….and that’s no science….buy enf backups if you think your reserves are’nt prepared to do the job as yet.

Man u it seems have fu**ed up their season…watever….its boring to watch without us being in the race.

it’s amazing how perspective changes for the last 2 months we were “imploding”,”choking”,”collapsing” but the same hasnt yet been said about man utd .draws against boro, blackburn and losing to chelsea and the “tactical” (pun intended !) draw against barca.

on the subject of signings.assuming no outs i think we need an experienced,old-fashioned(strong in the air ,good positionally etc etc) centre back and a genuine winger to compete with rosicky for lm .it will add great variety to the position . i dont think vela is the answer not yet.
maybe even a striker seeing that eduardo is out till xmas and rvp being injury prone
if you add flamini ,gilberto and/or hleb leaving (will gilberto stay if flam leaves ?)we may well need to get in 2 for cm one to back up cesc and the other to replace flam my list would be
1.zapata/albiol/micah richards
2.ben arfa/robinho (we were close to getting the brazillian last season so why not this time )
3.villa/huntelaar
4.barry/miguel veloso
5.joao moutinho/diego(far fetched but an option)
not sure about goalkeeper almunia looks alright to me for the short term but haven’t seen enough of fabianski or mannone to comment on the back up

gunner4life

Our defence; stupid.

We need to bring in a better CB in the mould of Adams, Campbell, Bould and Keown. We may not get Adamslike CB but we should try to get Sol or Keown type which is available.

It has been reported that Adams has said that the club with the best back 4 always win the title and he used MANU and Chelsea as an example.

The defence, mainly CB is the most important decision Arsene has to make. For me all that we need to do for next season is to fix the CB position.

One of the back-up defenders will have to leave either Djourou or Senderos because he’ll be wasting. I think Senderos should be the one to go as he’s not lived up to expectation and his often one-critical mistake in crucial matches hasn’t changed. Meanwhile Djourou hasn’t had the opportunities to prove himself.

I also believe that when we get this CB that I’m talking about, one of Toure or Gallas should spend time on the bench and I think Gallas should be the appropriate candidate as he’s not far from Senderos. Games against Chelsea and Manu convinced me that he can’t be the mainstay in the CB position. Kolo eventually will rise to his level before the ANC games.

indian gooner

Why should it be amazing?

MANU is still top with 2 matches to go and in the CL semi’s.

We had our chance and we blew it. They predicted we would blow it and we did at the end.

Its so painful. You can’t win the EPL with weak back four especially in the middle of the defence.

If only Arsene had sort out an appropriate answer to our CB position whenCampbell left, we will not be having all these problems.

Howard…
chelsea are in nothing to lose situation…i bet they will win all their remaining matches…

manu….the just need one draw to let the title slip…thts it one draw…. and then the perspectives will change…they had vidic and ferdinand arguably one of the most effective CBs pair….so if we buy one CB as you say..of vidic’s calibre at least…at he gets injured…then we will be down to gallas and toure prolly again…wat do we do then…buy another high quality backup…..are we minting money at Emirates?

Best back four performances can come with determined practice sessions and with a defensive coach like TA. The money needs to be spent on the attacking aspects….it cannot improve by “hard work” or “grit”…unlike defense. Thts where we need to spend before we think of spending on Center Backs…

If every problem would have been solved by buying out…Chelsea ought to have won the league before it started this season….fuc**** cun** keep sheva on bench and play kalou instead….fuc*** di** heads.

1 Man Utd 81
2 Chelsea 81
3 Arsenal 74

For the love of God people, if we win at Derby on Monday we will have 77 points. That’s 4 points away from the top two. We can’t be this bad? If any thing with all our injuries and bad luck, I would say Man Ure and Chelski, so is LPool look so bad with all the money they spent and all the depth and length or strength or whatever.

Actually if both teams Chelski and Man Ure got hit by lightning and lost their last two games, and we won ours we can still win the title.

Any explanation from the fear mongers out there?

Mr Richard

I think you must of misread my posts and have taken a personal insult against one of your country men. And to call me patheticgooner is an insult and one which is unfortunately turning this excellent blog into a playground. Again we all support the same club and I was merely putting forward my opinion

All I have questioned is how he has ended up at spurs, if you read my posts I stated that he is indeed a quality player and it is for that reason that I do not understand why he has ended up at Spurs. Given Chelsea and Barcelona’s supposed interest why did he not leave it until after the Euros. All I can think is that the agents fell on deaf ears when talking to the bigger clubs. I also noticed that his club claimed to have turned down offers in the region of 35m in Jan, so how come he has now gone for 15m

Also again despite his quality I honestly think that like Spurs our greater need is for players in other positions. He is too similar to Rosicky and Hleb for me

last point, I am neither Jealous of the Spuds nor am in councelling due to Modric going somewhere else (he was not on my personal wish list for the summer)…..so as you so politely put I don’t need to deal with it

Richard

You misunderstood Pat’s comment. Please do not stoop to making puerile insults. The commenters on here work hard to keep the blog somewhere that they can come to discuss matters sensibly even if they disagree with each other. It will stay that way.

1. Can someone tell me exactly what Hleb’s contract will cost him to buy out the final year? Clearly it will be nowhere near the cost of replacing him. Losing Flamini & Hleb together right now (& therefore replacing them) will hurt the transfer kitty badly, although neither player is irreplaceable.

2. It is remarkable with how much is said to be wrong with our team that we can be a couple of bad ref decisions from champions.

3. I’m not sure about the mourning of Modric’s passing. He is a good player but does he fit AW’s plans. I’m guessing not or he would not already be a Spur. Let’s move on.

I think Gsllas should remain as Captain.

Also, we are invariably still in the title race whether we believe it or not and whether we want to stretch our hopes that far or not.

If these persons draw 1 and lose one and we win all our remaining 3 matches, we have actually won the league and it will be no less than we deserve me thinks…

This is my stand and expectation till the season ends…

What would be an excellent end of the seasion is for us to come back and win the PL and Man U and Cheksea leave with nothing!

PUr turn around in captains is getting too much. IF gallas is not to be sold, then he defo remains as captain!
